Inflation of Data

Therecordofsomecompaniesleaveswithadeepsense of disgust at the lengths to which they will go to deceive others, and enrich themselves at the expense of those untutored in the ways that the commercial world really works The record of predatory companies is of unimaginable greed, of unending self-enrichment, and of trampling on the rights of any who are in their way, so that theymakeasmanydollarsastheycanandbyanymeans.

When the records of oil companies are looked at, ExxonMobil stands out as a leader in what is rapacious and twisted, andagainstthelaw As thisis said, itmustalsobe borne in mind that for every instance of exposure for a companylikeExxonMobil, therearemanyothersthatnever seethelightofday, withgreatwrongsperpetuated.

America’s Department of Labor moved against ExxonMobilforamatterthatsurfacedovertwoyearsago. It involved the inflation of production estimates, and the reportedvaluationofoilwellsinTexas. ExxonMobilwasso incensedbythosedisclosuresthatitfiredtheScientistswho took it up themselves to blow the whistle on wrongdoing, even as they knew that the powerful men and women at ExxonMobilwouldbeharshandunsparing. Theygotfired fordoingwhatwasright. Buttheyarenowbeingreinstated and made whole for the punishments inflicted illegally on them by ExxonMobil for whistleblowing. Employees who blowthewhistleoncorporateillegalityareaprotectedgroup inAmerica, andthiswasthemessagethatrangoutfromthe USLaborDepartment.

Toincreaseproductionestimatesistopaintapicturethat doesn’t exist, and facilitates favorable reviews by industry analysts and media. In turn, favorable reviews push up the company’s stock price, and this is one of the measures of performance. The performance of Senior Corporate Officers, their compensation packages, and the exercise of theirstockoptions, couldleadtohugepersonalwindfallsfor Executives and others. This is the first driver of the greed lurking in the breasts of Corporate Leaders, which prompts them to cut corners, and pull fast ones, such as inflating productionestimates.

According to a September 13, 2020 article in the ‘Wall Street Journal’(‘Exxon used to beAmerica’s most valuable company What happened?’), some employees were questioning the company’s raising of production estimates from600,000barrelsadayto1millionadayby2024. The employees were saying that it was ‘overly optimistic’, and that some assumptions could not holdup, and this is part of thereasonthattheScientistsgotthemselvesfired. Further, ExxonMobil’sworkershaddifficultywiththeUS$60billion valuationofholdings, whichincludedwells, intheDelaware areaofthePermianBasininTexas.

TheyfeltthatthatvaluationwasclosertoUS$40billion, whichExxonMobilhadinflatedby50%initspublicfilings, clearly a sizable differential. The decision makers at the company eventually decided to split the difference and settledforaUS$50billionvaluationoftheassets.

Nevertheless, production estimates and valuation of oil wellsarethekindsofinformationonwhichinvestorsdepend on, as they weigh investment choices in various companies and sectors. When unethical people in companies play gamesandmisleadwithsuchestimatesandvaluations, thena wholechainofharmsarepassedonandwhentheyworkhard tokeepthesecretsoftheirshenanigansfromcomingtolight, byfiringemployees, thenthewrongdoingscontinue.

The concern for us, and it should be the same for all Guyanese, is that if ExxonMobil can engage in such trickeries in sophisticatedAmerica, then there is no limit to the swindles that it would pile on this still unprepared and unknowing country. ExxonMobil is a known predator, yet many Guyanese swear by it, would even attack their fellow citizens, whoexposethefailuresofthecompanyhere.

ExxonMobil is not a friend of Guyanese, but an entity that would drain all our riches, cheat us through inflated expenses, deliberatelycorruptdata, andgetlocalPoliticians tosqueezethosewhoobjecttotheircrookedness.Unlessand untilthatregistersdeeply, thenExxonMobilwilldefeatus.

As locals would say, the oil money ‘fullin’people eye.’ It is obvious.

Leave it alone, and if it has to be touched, then let those struggling and suffering, taste its benefits.

Not the usual circle of insiders, hangers-on, and soup drinkers. They have enough.

Give the poor and needy something from the oil money. Otherwise, leave it where it is.

T20 World Cup: Scotland out after loss to Zimbabwe in Hobart

(BBC Sport) - Scotland are out of the T20 World Cup after a tense five-wicket defeat by Zimbabwe in Hobart.

The Scots, who beat West Indies on Monday, were effectively in a knockout situation, but only mustered 132-6 in the face of some wily Zimbabwe bowling.

Zimbabwe were 42-3 after eight overs when Sean Williams was dismissed.

But Sikandar Raza arrived to club 40 from 23 balls, adding 64 with Craig Ervine, who made 58 as victory was sealed

with nine balls to spare.

Zimbabwe make progress in a T20 World Cup for the first time. By finishing top of Group B, they advance to Group Two of the Super 12s where they will face India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and the Netherlands.

For Scotland, the defeat means they fail to emulate their performance of a year ago, when they reached the Super 12s at the last World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Ireland also advance from Group B, having beaten

West Indies by nine wickets earlier on Friday.

Sad end for Scotland

This is a cruel end for the Scots, who were superb in defeating West Indies and were the best side for most of the match against Ireland, only to be stunned by a late Irish fightback.

That set up this winnertakes-all match, and after winning the toss and accepting the theoretically better batting conditions, Scotland were stifled by the Zimbabwean bowling. Though George Munsey held things together with 54, the fact he took 51 balls over his runs was symptomatic of a Scotland innings that never took off.

A close friend might pass along some seemingly harmless but nonetheless untrue gossip, Taurus. Don't accept anything you hear today until you check the facts for yourself.

Some failures that you may have experienced over the past few days could have you beating yourself up today, Cancer.

LEO (July 23–Aug. 22)

VIRGO (Aug. 23–Se pt. 22)

Group activities are probably very much on your agenda today, Virgo. You could attend an online meeting or lecture and later participate in a group chat with a bunch of friends.

LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 22)

Too much pressure on the job could have you feeling like chucking it all and going somewhere by yourself. You might be tempted to go on a spending spree or overindulge in food or drink.

CAPRI (Dec. 22–Jan. 19)

A minor and rather silly quarrel with a friend or romantic partner could have you down in the dumps. This is an overreaction, Capricorn. You might need to get away for a while before you can make sense.

AQUARIUS(Jan.20–Feb.18)

Pressures on the job may be mounting. You might feel so disgruntled that you want to chuck it all and run away.

Foreign countries and distant states may suddenly seem far.

PISCES (Feb. 19–Mar. 20)

Demands made by friends, children, or the special person in your life might have you feeling like you're moving in a dozen different directions at once.

They failed to hit a six and managed only four fours after the second delivery of the seventh over - one of those was off a free-hit and another was leg-byes.

Zimbabwe’s new-ball pair Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava were excellent, while spinners Raza and Williams bowled in tandem for a tight spell.

When Scotland had an opportunity at the fall of Williams’ wicket, the electric Raza reversed the momentum with three fours and two sixes.

Flicker of old glory for Zimbabwe

Political and financial problems have left Zimbabwe a shadow of the side that regularly competed with the strongest cricketing nations during their heyday in the 1990s.

They were suspended by the International Cricket Council as recently as 2019, a ban which cost them a place at last year’s tournament.

But they have now won nine of their past 11 T20 internationals to go along with a one-day international defeat of Australia in September. They progress with wins over Ireland and Scotland.

Significantly, captain Ervine missed their defeat by West Indies and it was his calmness at the top of the order that guided the chase at Bellerive Oval. When Ervine finally made a mistake and miscued

left-arm spinner Mark Watt to mid-off, Zimbabwe only required 14 from three overs.

Milton Shumba and Ryan Burl refused to panic, Burl hitting Safyaan Sharif over midoff for the winning boundary.
