Letters... Where your views make the news...Letters... Where your views make the news

A concerted effort needed to end this history of bad governance DEAR EDITOR, Once upon a time there were countries with names as Nyasaland, Gold Coast, Rhodesia, Tanganyika, and others with familiar names of Nigeria and Kenya. Embroiled in the struggles for self-determination in Africa. We, also was a colony then – British Guiana. I was much younger then. Full of hope as many others for our independence. And if your house was a house with a political activist – the father, it was demanded of the son of that house to show every person in the village where to and how to place the X on the ballot paper. It was the 1953 Adult Suffrage elections. The right to vote. Politics was in the air. No one could miss the excitement. We knew of Africa. We knew the names of their leaders. Teachers spoke of them in Primary schools. Across the Atlantic Ocean, there was Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and few other islands seeking self-

determination as well. And British Guiana was there as well in the quest. Unlike Africa with its confrontations, the Caribbean choose a civil and ordered path to independence. My country chose the destructive path. It shook every pillar of our society. Threatened American Foreign interests. And the separation of the moderates and extremists resulted in the division of the societyracism. We need our country back. The upcoming election must be as the one of 1953. A nation fired up to end all nonsense. It is our independence from those who pride themselves better than the citizens of this land. It is my wish to inspire you. It is my wish to motive you. It is my wish to congregate every person who opposes bad governance. It is my wish to convince the opposition parties to free

their blocks of voters. Let the people choose their leaders for the much anticipated elections. In the words of Martin Luther King, “Free at last, free at last.” You would give this country back its purpose one people, one nation with one destiny. We are communities with in a community. This must end. I read, “A young Amerindian woman was gang raped.” It appears, no one cared about her plight. Bullied and threatened, she had to leave her livelihood. Where are those who govern and are paid to uphold the laws of the country? There is no remorse. Entrenched evil ways and deeds. One can only turn to divine interventions. And Psalm 109adequately spells out. For APNU and AFC, soon you will be voting on the noconfidence motion set before you. It is imperative that you seriously consider your obligations to the citizens of Guyana –not personal. Do

Mr. Granger’s lack of... From page 4 are not Party officials but they are preventing some officials from performing functions.” He is ignoring some fundamental political survival tools here. Solomon, Gonsalves and Kissoon may not be “Party officials” according to him, but they are, I repeat, they are collectively elected leaders of their party groups, major opinion shapers and leaders, regional chairman, regional councillor, trade unionists, educator/teacher, members of the party, and member of parliament. Make no mistake, these persons are influential and consequential! These ‘ordinary people’ as Mr. Granger wants to believe hold tremendous sway in their communities. He is ignoring that the persons he is side-lining can figuratively lift him on their shoulders with the support of their following or they can leave him to walk in the shifting sand, where he will find no foothold. They can deliver for him! You don’t isolate, disrespect or ignore them because they don’t measure up to your perception of rank or class or dare to accept nomination to contest for Party Leader. Among the residents, students, parents, party members and supporters, working class, and rank and file they have significant following and in politics this means a darn lot! 7. “The political leader [Granger] said that other councillors attended the

meeting as well as several other people of Linden.” Mr. Granger said more than 50 people attended and about 30 people were protesting outside. Leslie Gonslaves said about 16 people attended and more than 60 were barred from entering and therefore protested outside. There are glaring disparities on numbers here, that aside, PNC and APNU meetings in Linden are known for having hundreds and thousands as seen from media reports. Evidently, Mr. Granger could not mobilise or attract these numbers even as he informed the meeting was advertised and handbills and radio were used as tools. This should tell him something. What is however most significant is that Mr. Granger refuses to get the picture. Reading Stabroek News it is

learnt Gordon Callender, Leslie Gonsalves, Douglas Gittens, Mayfield Greene, Charles Sampson and Fern McCoy were all locked out of the meeting and were on the streets prevented from entering by the police. These persons are councillors. Media reports also said Sharma Solomon and Vanessa Kissoon were not at the meeting. Mr. Granger’s disrespect for others and his lack of humility will negatively impact the opposition and PNCR. With elections around the corner he needs to demonstrate the political astuteness that would result in resolution of festering issues and rally the electoral around an alternative to the PPP. The responsibility is his to get it right. Minette Bacchus

not be swayed from your duty. Pass the motion when the time is right for it. Your country is hurting too much to let this important milestone of our history to be swept under the rug. Your responsibility to the country as representatives in its parliament asks that you examine your conscience. Look around you, there is neglect and human suffering.

You are also responsible for the least in our society. The aim is to have a government that cares about the alarming rate of suicides, intimidation of dissenting citizens and many more transgressions upon the nation. I would hope there is participation of the citizens while you deliberate. It is like a vigil. There should be quiet assembly of citizens outside

the Parliament Building for you to know that they await your decision. It is their emancipation that you are considering. The same determination is needed to form a new government. This is not a job for the leaders of individual political parties. It is a concerted effort to end the history of bad governance. Velutha Kuttapen

The PPP is hiding the truth about local govt. elections DEAR EDITOR, Reading the INEWS piece on October 9th, 2014 captioned “No evidence Ramotar has abandoned LGE” by Dr. Lunceheon shows how confused, desperate and silly the PPP has become under the DONOTHING president because they are fully aware that they are resented by the people including many of their own supporters. Armed with this information, their intent is to create chaos not only against the opposition but among the three major races—Indo Guyanese, Afro-Guyanese and our native brothers and sisters throughout the land. We want to remind Dr. Luncheon that on the campaign trail in 2011, the PPP Presidential candidate at the time, Mr. Ramotar, had committed to holding Local Government Election (LGE) within 12 months of attaining executive office; it has been three years now. This is also stated clearly in the PPP 2011 Communist Manifesto. So instead of Dr. Luncheon coming clean and tell the people the true reason why the PPP has refused to hold

LGE, he is now attempting to deceive them with his convoluted chicanery that “there is absolutely no evidence that the Head of State has disregarded, abandoned or recanted from his commitment and that of his Party to local government elections. This is wicked and even evil since it is a blatant untruth. It is a major contradiction by the PPP. It appears that Dr. Luncheon has become the PPP propagandist. Why is the PPP scared of holding local government elections? Why is the PPP so afraid to face the people? Why is the PPP General Secretary at his weekly press conference continuing to pretend that the PPP is ready for elections? The truth is the Freedom House gang knows that their propaganda will not work and that they would receive a sound trashing from the people whenever they decide to call an election. Dr. Luncheon’s ad-lib at his press conferences shows that he is nothing but the messenger boy of the PPP who is prepared to say anything, even though in

most cases they are false. So in a typical PPP dictatorial style, Dr. Luncheon would say LGE is necessary, but it is not a PPP priority. This is like saying one has to eat but it is not a priority for one to eat. This is what the PPP has and continues to do to the people, especially the poor and the working whose opinions they have ignored and whose interests they have totally abandoned. They have unleashed their undemocratic principles and dictatorial abuses on the people of Guyana by imposing Interim Manage Committees (IMCs) and their chosen overseers on several municipalities and villages which they did not win in the last LG elections to perpetuate their dastardly rule and cowardly acts on the people all over the land. But history and logics will show, evil cannot stand and this evil, corrupt and uncaring Ramotar/Jagdeo regime will fall. And when this happens, a bright light will shine on Guyana that will uplift the spirit of the people and bring hope to the hopeless. Asquith Rose and Harish Singh

Kerry pushes for Mideast peace, donors pledge $5 billion for Palestinians (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called yesterday for a renewed commitment to achieving Middle East peace, saying a lasting deal between Israel, the Palestinians and all their neighbours was possible. But prospects for a renewed peace process appeared dim as Kerry offered no specifics on how to restart negotiations in his speech to a Gaza reconstruction conference that raised more than $5 billion (3.1 billion pounds) in aid for the Palestinians after a devastating war in the tiny coastal territory. The last round of U.S.brokered peace talks foundered in April over Israeli objections to a Palestinian political unity pact that included the Islamist Hamas movement and over Palestinian opposition to Israeli settlement expansion. “Out of this conference must come not just money but a renewed commitment from everybody to work for peace that meets the aspirations of all, for Israelis, for Palestinians, for all people of this region,” Kerry told the meeting in Cairo. “And I promise you the full commitment of President (Barack)Obama, myself and the United States to try to do that,” he said. “Make no mistake: What was compelling about a twostate solution a year ago is even more compelling today,” added Kerry, referring to the long-term goal of an independent, democratic Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel. At the conference Kerry also announced an additional $212 million in U.S. aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which was badly damaged during a conflict with Israel in July and August in which 2,100 Palestinians died, most of them civilians. An estimated 18,000 homes and vital infrastructure were destroyed in the seven-

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry speaks during the Gaza international donors conference in Cairo yesterday. Credit: Reuters/Carolyn Kaster/Pool week war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas. The Palestinians have put the cost of reconstruction at about $4 billion and Norway’s Foreign Minister Borge Brende said the conference had secured $5.4 billion in aid, half of which would be used for rebuilding Gaza and the rest could go to other Palestinian areas. Dozens of countries attended the Cairo meeting where a clear message emerged: pledges and picking up the pieces after fighting is not the solution, and a comprehensive Middle East peace deal is needed to end hostilities once and for all. “A ceasefire is not peace, and we’ve got to find a way to get back to the table and help people make tough choices, real choices,” said Kerry. The Palestinian Authority hopes that moves by a new unity government towards assuming control in Hamasdominated Gaza could make wealthy donor states less wary of providing reconstruction aid.

Among countries offering reconstruction aid for Gaza, Qatar offered $1 billion, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates promised $200 million each and Turkey pledged $200 million. Qatar’s relations with Egypt have been strained since then army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi toppled Islamist President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood last year. The small but ambitious Gulf Arab state’s close ties to Hamas, an offshoot of the Brotherhood, also angered Egypt, which is influential across the Arab world. Israel and the United States consider Hamas a terrorist organisation. When journalists were allowed in briefly for the start of one-on-one talks in a Cairo suburb, Kerry was overheard asking Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: “Did you hear about Qatar?” presumably referring to the $1 billion pledge. France said it would contribute 40 million euros (31.4 million pounds) to the Palestinians and Germany

offered 50 million euros. Britain’s ambassador to Egypt, John Casson, told Reuters London would provide $32 million for the reconstruction efforts. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said pledges from the bloc’s 28

member states would reach 450 million euros. It was not immediately clear whether the sum included the separate contributions announced by Germany, France and Britain. “We can’t allow people in Gaza to sink into despair,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a statement. Egypt, which brokered the current ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians in August, used the Cairo conference to renew its call for a wider Middle East peace deal based on a 2002 Arab initiative, which Israel has rejected. “We should turn this moment into a real starting point to achieve a peace that secures stability and flourishing and renders the dream of coexistence a reality, and this is the vision of the Arab peace initiative,” Sisi, now Egypt’s elected president, said in his opening speech. The Arab peace initiative was floated by Saudi Arabia in 2002 and offers full recognition of the Jewish state, but only if it gives up all land seized in the 1967 Middle East war and agrees

to a “just solution” for Palestinian refugees. Abbas said in Cairo the Arab plan could be the framework for a new approach to the PalestinianIsraeli conflict. Kerry later agreed that the Arab proposal held promise as “a foundation and a basis” on which to negotiate. “Imagine if all of the countries of the region were to be able to make peace with Israel because Israel and the Palestinians had made peace,” he added. Successive Israeli governments have rejected the Arab initiative but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently suggested a greater role for Israel’s Arab neighbours in the pursuit of peace. Netanyahu has shown little, if any, appetite for concessions towards the Palestinians. In his White House talks with Obama this month, he made clear that his priority was to prevent the United States and other world powers from going easy on Iran, Israel’s regional archfoe, in nuclear talks that are entering a critical phase.

DEMOCRACY IS UNDER SIEGE In 2002, the European Union instituted a travel ban on officials of the Zimbabwean government amidst a crackdown on opponents by the Mugabe administration. That ban was lifted this year but remained on President Mugabe and his wife. In July of this year, the United States Embassy instituted visa bans on officials of the Maduro government in Venezuela. This followed concerns over human rights violation during stormy political protests in that country. More importantly, in March of this year, the US imposed similar sanctions for Russian and Ukrainians

accused of impeding the democratic process in Crimea. Thus, it is not just a case of persons having to commit human rights violations in order to attract a visa ban. There is a precedent in US foreign policy to institute visa bans for persons who are accused to impeding the democratic process within a country. And there also is a precedent of visa bans being used where opponents of a government are being hounded. It is against this background that I invite the United States Embassy, the Canadian High Commission and the British High Commission to seriously examine the unfolding

situation in Guyana and to determine whether they should not begin preparing to institute visa bans in Guyana. The United States of course had at one time instituted a visa ban on all government officials and their families, in Guyana. This was after the government had, in the estimation of the US government, prevaricated on the paper work necessary for the US to deport Guyanese. The US took a decision to not offer any new visas to government officials or their families. They did not cancel or revoke existing visas. This policy worked. The government quickly ensured the necessary paper work was dispatched to facilitate the

extradition of Guyanese convicted of criminal offences in the United States. I believe the time has come for the ABC countries to seriously consider the deteriorating situation in Guyana. It is time for them to begin to plan for the possibility of imposing visa restrictions on select members of the ruling elite and their cronies. The ABC countries should not wait until the situation in Guyana deteriorates further. The signs are there of tyranny in Guyana. The ABC countries should signal their concerns before Guyana reaches the point of no return. When a regime becomes desperate, it knows no limits and will eventually resort to brute force. This has happened before in Guyana. When a regime has to go after the media in a country simply because the media is exposing its wrongdoings, it shows that the government cannot legitimately explain and defend its actions and therefore is forced to resort to silencing the media. We know from history of the excesses that will follow. When vendettas are launched against the media by persons holding public office, we have long passed the warning point. We are now in the danger zone. Tyranny is afoot. When persons can be framed, when trumped up

charges are laid against them, then we are dealing with desperate people who will do anything, including abusing their offices further to avoid being exposed. When the rule of law is perverted by those in authority and used to target those who criticize the government, democracy itself is threatened because democracy rests of a foundation of the rule of law. When Local Government Elections cannot be held when constitutionally due and when no credible explanation can be offered for the non-holding of these elections, then we are dealing with a desperate government which does not wish to yield political power. Democracy is under siege. The government in Guyana is operating from a house of cards. And those cards are slowly but surely crumbling. When it does crumble, there will be many persons within the government who will be running to the United States in order to escape justice. They will not be running from the No-Confidence Motion. They will be running from justice. They will not be running empty-handed. They will not be running alone. They will run with their ill-gotten gains and they will be accompanied by their families. Suitcases are already

being packed. Contingency plans are being made should the tyrants lose power. They will empty the treasury and run with it, not to Cuba or Russia, but to America, Canada and England. The United States has a policy that opposes the proceeds of ill-gotten gains, including from government corruption finding its way into their economy. So too do the Canadians and so too the British. Guyana will once again have to start all over and this will be an added burden on the ABC countries which have already invested so much in this country. If Guyana has to start all over again, we will be unable to be supportive of the broader hemispheric goals of the ABC countries, including addressing national security threats such as drug trafficking and terrorism. Acting now before the situation gets irredeemable therefore makes sense. The ABC countries need to act now. They need to at least begin to consider a visa ban on those individuals who because of their abuse of power are likely to flee should the house of cards implode in Guyana.

DON’T KNOW BEANS A cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink which is traditionally prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed-milk foam. The name comes from the Capuchin friars, referring to the colour of their habits. My Capuchin friars had very dirty habits and my cuppa cappuccino looks like mochaccino (a chocolate cappuccino) and tastes like macchiato (an espresso with a little milk added) which looks more as if it came from a capuchin monkey than a percolator or even a perco-latte. Which bring us belatedly to a latte but, as they say in L.A., better latte than never. A latte is a coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. The English term is a shortened form of the Italian “caffè latte” or “caffellatte”, which means “milk coffee”. In Spanish it is

a “café con leche”. In English, it is condensed to latte and, given the amount you are now charged for one, you can truly say that you get creamed more than the coffee and you can watch your money evaporate. You ask for skim and you get scammed. While some people, tea drinkers mostly, believe that coffee is froth with romance most of us who enjoy the Rituals associated with the brew are fraught with anxiety right now because the Brazilian crop has failed and prices will rise. In the case of Starbucks, which earlier this year already increased its prices on several of its flavours, the cost of a cup of Java will probably cost the whole of Indonesia and Sumatra and, like Vincent Van Gogh, will rise again. But coffee does have overtones and undertones.

For example, Starbucks has four size options-tall (12 ounces), grande (16), venti (24), and trenta (31). Why all these name games? Dictionary.com says, “This designation by the coffee company is considered by many to be a classic instance of corporate language manipulation…The result arguably encourages a consumer to think a little less about the size of his or her beverage as well as the size of the bill. The size of the bill in a Starbuck’s or Rituals (a Caribbean chain) is interesting. Britain’s “Telegraph” newspaper says, “The most expensive ingredient in the drink is in fact the paper cup it is served in, researchers say. High street coffee shop chains spend twice as much on packaging as they do on the beans they use, analysis

found. While the cost of the coffee served in a mediumsized £2.20 (US$3.55) cappuccino is just 8p (US$13cents), the total cost of the cup, lid, stirrer, napkin and sugar amounts to 16p (US$26 cents). The biggest cost covered in the price of the drink, however, is the wages paid to staff, which make up nearly a quarter of the price.” Despite the looming price rise, researchers generally have good news for coffee lovers. The Telegraph said, “But the price paid now still represented good value, they argued. Jeffrey Young, of Allegra Strategies, said: ‘The time that consumers spend in coffee shops is generally time well spent for them. Coffee is now a very big part of the social experience of British society. People spend a lot of time

After narrowly escaping execution two months ago…

Businessman missing, relatives fear worst

Months after a recent execution attempt, popular city businessman Mohamed F Khan (MFK) is missing and relatives are holding their breaths and praying that nothing bad has befallen him. Khan’s disappearance comes a few weeks after he survived an apparent execution attempt while he was visiting Guyana, a few months ago. The businessman has been residing in neighbouring Venezuela for the past few years after closing down his popular business on Hadfield Street, Georgetown. The missing person report was first made to the Guyana Embassy in Venezuela by Khan’s Venezuelan wife who last saw him on August 21st, when he left the Spanish speaking country for Guyana to contact his attorneys who were handling some business arrangements for him. Relatives in Guyana have not heard from him since and did not suspect anything much since Khan also has business transactions in the interior and would sometimes spend time there. However, after close relatives did not receive a call or any information pertaining to Khan’s whereabouts, they became suspicious. “He came over here to meet his lawyer and to check on some business stuff, since then nobody can get in contact with him. When he came, he met some friends and did his business and

Missing: Mohamed F Khan displaying his bandaged abdomen following the execution attempt in July. since then nobody could have gotten in contact with him. Everybody was trying to contact him and call all his friends and people he would go by, but nobody seems to know anything,” a close relative lamented. “The thing is, he has a wife in Venezuela and three small kids he was supposed to come to Guyana and then return to Venezuela in five days, so when his wife did not see him, she tried contacting

everyone she knows that can trace his whereabouts. People he normally deals with said they saw him months ago.” Khan, 54, survived an execution attempt on July 9 last when was shot in his abdomen by a lone gunman at La Grange, West Bank of Demerara. He had disclosed back then, his suspicions of a business associate who had threatened him over a sour property deal.

Khan had also disclosed that he believed the gunman was either a serving or former member of the Guyana Police Force, giving rise to his suspicions that his business associate is using his well placed “connections” to escape justice. In an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News back then, Khan related that his bout of troubles stemmed from the sale of one of the many properties he owned in the city. He said the buyer was trying to rob him of several million dollars which is owed to him from the sale of a prominent city business. “I keep asking him for my money and at first he was always making excuses and then he started threatening me. He threatened me that if I come back to Guyana he will take me out.” He had stated. Khan, who was a staunch advocate of the Buy Local campaign, said that he learnt from his underworld connections that there was an $11M bounty on his head. Last month, police discovered a headless decomposed body at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara after being alerted by workers attached to the Ministry of Public Works, who were clearing a cemetery in the community. Meanwhile, police noted that the badly decomposed body that was discovered hidden in a clump of bushes, was that of a man. there [in coffee shops] and they aren’t paying for that time other than the price of a cup of coffee. Sometimes two or three people can get together and spend a few hours and can collectively spend a fiver. That’s extremely good value.’” They forgot the free Wi-Fi which makes it even better. The broadband is not only around the cup. Researchers have also found that drinking more coffee might lower your risk for type 2 diabetes and that people who boosted their daily coffee intake by more than one cup over four years reduced their diabetes risk, while adults who drank less coffee in that time frame saw their odds for diabetes rise. A web-site (Authority Nutrition) has identified thirteen health benefits from coffee. They include increased energy levels and intelligence; fat-burning ability; drastically improved physical performance; essential nutrients like riboflavin, potassium and niacin; protection from Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and liver diseases; prevention of depression; lower risk of cancers, heart diseases and stroke; and you live longer. It also smells good from far and is no longer to be considered far from good for your health.

Recently I bought my own little machine that looks like a tiny electric kettle to make my own froth something I have been doing for years without needing a machine. It can make froth for a latte or a cappuccino. In the US, “latte” is associated with “Liberals” or left-of-centre politics. A BBC article says that it is light and frothy, foreign sounding, an expensive indulgence and the coffee isn’t so great. Espresso with steamed milk is the warm beverage of progressivism, “more specifically, that proverbial subset of affluent, coastaldwelling, Prius-driving intellectuals whom talk radio hosts like to lambast.” I drive a five-year-old, foreign-used Nissan Tiida. I am off the talk-radio radar and in Antigua, which has more than 365 beaches I live in a landlocked area. The “latte” bit for my froth-maker is still in the box. I drink cappuccino when I have time but I filter my own coffee which is generally from Kenya, Ethiopia or New Guinea. That makes me a black coffee drinker. *Tony Deyal was last seen saying that a man got a divorce because his wife made putrid coffee. The judge smelt the filter and said, “You have grounds for divorce.”

APNU investigating Housing company closely associated with Bai Shan Lin A model of the houses to be offered by Sunset Lakes.

The main opposition political force in Guyana, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has launched an investigation into the deal between the government and the owners of Sunset Lakes Inc. Sunset Lakes is a Chinese-owned company that has ventured into developing a massive housing community in Providence on the East Bank of Demerara, just behind the National Stadium. The name of the housing scheme which is now coming under scrutiny is ‘New Life Community’. APNU leader, David Granger at his most recent press conference told the media that his coalition has an interest in the project and wants to know the details. He disclosed that APNU’s General Secretary, Joseph Harmon, who sits in the National Assembly as the shadow Minister of Public Works, was the one who is handling the investigation. Granger could not say whether or not his colleague was able to access any information. “I do know he has been investigating but I do not know if he has been able to put his hands on any documents,” said Granger. Kaieteur News made attempts to contact Harmon but those proved futile. However, the newspaper understands that APNU wants to find out all details surrounding the deal, including the amount of money paid for the lands, how many ways will Guyana benefit, what qualified the Chinese company for the endeavor and when was the deal made between the Guyana government and the Asian Nationals. Sunset Lakes made quite an impression on patrons who attended Guyana’s recently concluded largest trade fair, GuyExpo. Sunset Lakes and the controversial Asian logging company shared a tent at the fair and the same officials handled the

affairs of both booths. Representatives of the two companies boasted that Sunset Lakes is offering, for the first time in Guyana, a five star state-of-the-art gated community where all modern amenities will be offered. When Kaieteur News visited the booth at GuyExpo, the newspaper was told that the houses range “to suit all kinds of people”. The company has decided to have different sizes of houses, with the smallest house costing $50M and the largest, $130M. A brochure shared out at Guyexpo stated, “We at Sunset Lakes Inc. take great pleasure in introducing to you, for the first time in Guyana, a Five Star State-ofthe-Art Gated Residence, offering all prestigious and modern amenities to ensure you live that deeply desired New Life.” The New Life Community, according to the website, offers a complete luxury package, including supermarket, bar, post office, telecommunication, swimming pool, gymnasium among other services to make life for Guyanese more convenient and delightful. The website stated that safety and comfort is the company’s main priority; “so you our prized residents can lay back and enjoy that life you envision in exquisite, comfortable homes. Your needs and wants are both sufficiently catered for in our strategic location along the lower East Bank of Demerara, Guyana. Our prime focus is to turn your everyday hustle and bustle into a relaxing, enjoyable lifestyle with all your desires met in a healthy and secure atmosphere.” The website specified types of houses offered. The “Caramel Collage” is the largest of all our homes offers ultimate sophistication to detail. This offers Land: sq.ft - 11965.12 and the house of itself is sq.ft – 5181. The Sunrise Villa is the smallest and this has 6240.8 sq.ft in land space and the actual house covers 3353 sq.ft.

Guyana takes on mass preparation approach to tackle Ebola - over 1600 medical personnel to be trained Guyana has a mass preparedness campaign onstream as the dreaded Ebola virus continues to cause worldwide uproar. This is according to Dr. Johanna Cole, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC) Internal MedicineInfectious Diseases Consultant. Speaking at a Continued Medical Education (CME) session this morning at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield Street, Dr. Cole noted that the Ministry of Health has taken on a mass preparedness approach towards the virus. She pointed out that 1,600 medical professionals are to soon commence training on dealing with the virus, and the necessary approach towards administering care to persons who have contracted the virus as opposed to those who are suspected to have it. In addition, emphasis will be placed on safety and precautionary measures for

Porter allegedly chopped by person he tried to rescue Tyron Captain

A porter is currently nursing severe chop wounds to his left arm at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), after he allegedly tried to rescue his assailant the previous night. According to Tyron Captain, of Everton, East Berbice, Corentyne, while he was walking on his way home on Friday around 20:00 hours, he observed a “man lying in a nearby trench with a bicycle resting on his body” and decided to help him out of the situation. Captain, 24, said that it seemed as though the man had just been “beaten or knocked down”. In an attempt to remove the man and bicycle from the

trench, Captain said that he was “cursed several times about himself and his family” by the individual, who appeared to be drunk. As a result, he decided to abort the kind gesture. However, in an effort to leave the individual alone, the porter alleged that he received a threat from the intoxicated man, who told him that he would “kill” him the next day. Captain said that he responded by saying, “People trying to help ya’ll and that’s how you behaving. You is nothing but jail bait.” On Saturday around 7:00 hours, Captain said that he left his home with the

intention to visit his cousin who resides nearby. One his way there, the porter said that he suddenly heard someone running quickly behind him, breathing heavily while approaching. Sensing danger, Captain said he quickly turned around, but was too late to prevent the two chops allegedly fired by the same individual that he tried to rescue the previous night. The porter said he managed to block the chops with his left hand and evade the assailant by running to a nearby resident for assistance, while the assailant made good his escape. Captain said that he was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital by public spirited residents. However, not satisfied with the treatment there, he took it upon himself to travel to the city and presented himself to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation on Saturday where he was admitted, after experiencing excruciating pain and swelling within his wounded arm. He said that the matter was reported at the Port Mourant Police Station, and he was informed that investigations are ongoing.

health care providers, who may come in contact with an infected person or environment, as the Ebola is highly contagious and spreads rapidly through direct or indirect contact with bodily fluids. She added that surveillance at all ports of entry including airports and shipping ports, as well as screening is being done. Further, meetings have been held to educate persons working at these points. Dr. Cole noted that isolation capacity is ready at the airports and the largest isolation housing unit is at the GPHC. Guyana has also moved towards establishing an action plan to deal with the deadly virus, and in this regard a wide cross section of stakeholders from various organisations had a recent meeting to discuss and establish the measures to be undertaken in order to put the plan into operation. Ebola is a severe febrile illness that affects humans and non human primates, and is often fatal. Outbreaks mainly occur primarily in Central and West Africa. The Ebola Hemorrhagic Virus has five species all named after the locations where they were discovered. The 38-year-old virus surfaced in 1976 in Guinea. Ebola is transmitted to the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected wild animals such as infected fruit bats, chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys. The virus is spread through humans by direct person to person contact through broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) with the

blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of infected persons with Ebola signs and symptoms. This virus can also be spread through indirect contact with environments contaminated with such body fluids. The initial symptoms are sudden fever, headache, sore throat, muscle pain and intense weakness. These symptoms advance to vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash and bleeding (internal and external). The virus attacks the body quickly, and causes the infected individual to be sick in as little as two days but can take up to 21 days for the symptoms to show up. Recovery takes weeks to months while deaths occur 614 days of the illness’ onset. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus can survive out of the body for 24 hours and up to 40-90 days in breast milk and semen after the recovery period. Protection against the disease can be done by washing hands regularly with soap and water as they carry lots of germs that cause diseases. Direct contact with body fluids (tears, saliva, sweat, semen, vaginal fluid, blood etc) should be avoided and protective clothing such as gloves must be used when handling stool or attending to wounds. There is no specific treatment and no vaccine currently available for humans. However, supportive care is recommended and lamivudine, which is used to treat HIV/AIDS is considered safe to treat the virus; however, it is too soon to determine the effectiveness of it. Pain relievers and fever medicines are also recommended. (GINA)

Businessman M.F Khan... (From page 15) were found in a black plastic bag. There was also some amount of “heavy duty” tape wrapped around the bag. Several other bones which appeared to be human where scattered around the scene by dogs which had begun to devour the remains. Police sources have said that a plastic handcuff along with a car mat was found in the bushes close to the body. Khan’s relatives said they had visited the Lyken Funeral Home to investigate if it was him. However, an attendant in the morgue had told them that there was a ponytail attached to the badly decomposed

head, creating doubts in the relatives’ minds. Khan who was a former television talk show host on the popular CNS Channel 6, had been out of Guyana for the past six years, claiming that he fled the land of his birth because of death threats he had been receiving. He is no stranger to controversy, having had major differences with a former top government official, which he claimed forced him to sell his business and flee Guyana. Khan had declared that he would have returned to invest in Guyana soon, claiming that he has big plans to erect a state of the art supermarket.

Environmentalist on hunger strike admitted to hospital PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - CMC – Environmentalist Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh was admitted to a private hospital yesterday after his health “deteriorated” according to a statement posted on the website of the Highway ReRoute Movement (HRM). “I know he is stable, he is okay, but I can’t say what the medical situation is,” said David Abdullah, who over the past few days has emerged as a spokesman for the environmentalist. Abdullah said he was urging people to participate in an event yesterday “not only for Wayne’s recovery but also the country in relation to finding a way forward out of this impasse”. Kublalsingh, 55, a former University of the West Indies (UWI) lecturer, who heads the HRM, had embarked on the indefinite hunger strike 26 days ago to protest the construction of a segment of the seven billion dollar (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) highway in south Trinidad. Last week, Kublalsingh’s medical practitioner Dr. Asante Van West-Charles-Le Blanc, warned that the environmentalist is near death with his vital organs showing signs of deterioration. “Based on the laws of physiology, and on studies of hunger strikers, there is now organ damage including to the nervous system. Based on my observations, I have strongly and repeatedly

Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh advised Dr Kublalsingh to cease this hunger strike before it is too late and further irreparable damage is done to his organs,” said the doctor, who has since withdrawn her services. She said the ultimate result of a hunger strike of this nature is death “and to my mind this is highly probable and a rapidly approaching occurrence. “The true clinical picture is not a pretty one, there are no smoke screens or tricks, this citizen of Trinidad and Tobago is dying,” she said, adding that she would still be available to him if an emergency occurs, “and I will be happy to attend to him in any institution of his choice if he decided to stop this hunger strike”. He is also requesting a meeting with Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar to discuss new proposals put forward by the HRM to deal with the construction of the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the highway that

Kublalsingh said would not destroy the environment in the area, particularly the Oropouche lagoon. Prime Minister Persad Bissessar has said her government would not be held to ransom by the environmentalist and has so far refused to accede to the request for discussions. According to the HRM statement, Kublalsingh has been taken to the St. Clair Medical Hospital, near the office of the Prime Minister. “We wish him strength to continue the struggle for accountability and transparency,” the statement said, reminding supporters to gather at the Nelson Mandela Park near the hospital for “a candlelight vigil calling for mediation on the matter”. In 2012, Kublalsingh had embarked on a 21-day hunger strike over the same issue and called it off after there had been agreement for an independent commissioner to look into the controversy. The HRM said the commissioner, Dr. James Amstrong, had produced a report which should have been binding on all stakeholders including the government, and the environmental group has accused the government of reneging on the agreement to abide by the amstrong report. “Please come in your numbers to say Yes to Mediation, end this impasse and advocate for a win-win solution for all,” the HRM said.

Human rights group says justice denied by Duvalier’s death NEW YORK - CMC – A human rights group says the inability of Haiti’s courts to bring to trial former dictator Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier deprived countless Haitian victims of the justice they sought. Duvalier, who died on October 4, of a reported heart attack, was buried on Saturday in a low-key, nonofficial funeral. “It’s a shame that the Haitian justice system could not bring ‘Baby Doc’ Duvalier to trial before he died,” said Reed Brody, special counsel at Human Rights Watch, who worked with Duvalier’s victims. “Duvalier’s death robs Haiti of what could have been the most important human rights trial in its history.” Human Rights Watch noted that Duvalier inherited

power from his father, the dictator François “Papa Doc” Duvalier, and ruled Haiti from 1971 to 1986. A Human Rights Watch report, “Haiti’s Rendezvous with History: The Case of Jean-Claude Duvalier”, examined the legal and practical questions surrounding the rule of Baby Doc and concluded that Haiti had an obligation under international law to investigate and prosecute the grave violations of human rights under Duvalier’s rule. The report, published in April 2011, also addressed Haiti’s capacity to carry out the trial, the question of the statute of limitations, and Duvalier ’s personal involvement in alleged criminal acts. “A Haitian proverb says ‘He who gives the blow forgets; he who

Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier carries the scar remembers,’” Brody said. “Duvalier may have forgotten the blows he gave to the Haitian people, but his victims remember.” Last week, another human rights watchdog, Amnesty International, called for the continued investigation of alleged wrong doing during Duvalier’s regime.

Political scientist suggests Jamaica abandons Westminster-style government Jamaica Gleaner Political scientist Richard “Dickie” Crawford is suggesting that Jamaica abandons the Westminster model of governance given growing apathy amongst voters. Pointing to the findings in a recent poll by pollster Bill Johnson, Crawford underscored that the current political system has “outlived its usefulness”. The poll findings published in yesterday’s Sunday Gleaner show a migration of voters from the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) and a subsequent swelling of the undecided, giving the Jamaica Labour

Party (JLP) a 12 per cent advantage over the PNP, if a general election were to be called now. However, a very significant 41 per cent of enumerated voters say they would not vote and 16 per cent were undecided. Crawford argued that the state of apathy is evidence that the Westminster model of governance, which Jamaica inherited from Britain, is outdated beyond repair and should be discontinued. The lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, said pollsters were expecting the number of people who refuse

Richard Crawford to vote to increase very soon to 60 per cent. He said neither the JLP nor the PNP seem capable of addressing the growing problem of apathy.

Bermuda battered by Tropical Storm Fay, thousands left without electricity HAMILTON, Bermuda CMC – Thousands have been left without electricity and several roads were blocked by fallen trees as Tropical Storm Fay battered Bermuda with high winds and heavy rain early yesterday. The Bermuda Electric Light Company, sole provider of power in the island, reported more than 27,000 outages at the height of the storm. Early-morning bus services were also suspended due to high

winds. According to Meteorologists, Fay – the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, stayed on a more northerly track than expected and passed virtually right over the island around 4 a.m. local time. Maximum winds were recorded at 70 miles per hour, just short of the hurricane threshold. Forecasters said the back of the eye of Fay brought the strongest winds, enhanced

by thunderstorms. “Tropical storm conditions are likely for a few hours on the back side of the storm, with easing winds by late morning, as Fay moves slowly away,” said a release from the Bermuda Weather Service. The hurricane watch has been lifted but a tropical storm warning remained in effect. Fay started as Subtropical Depression Seven when it formed 590 miles south of Bermuda on Friday.

Ex-LifeSport man on bail leaves T&T Trinidad Express - Former co-ordinator for the Carapo arm of the now defunct LifeSport Programme, Rajaee Ali, has left the country. The Sunday Express understands Ali left the country last week. The LifeSport Programme is under active investigation by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). Contacted Saturday, Minister of National Security Gary Griffith said he was aware that Ali had left the country. “It has been brought to my attention that he is not in the country,” he said. Asked whether Ali was a person of interest, Griffith said he could not comment. “We are aware of who the

persons of interest are. We cannot share that with the public but we are aware,” he said. Ali was detained on May 9 by police for gang related activity, shortly after Senior Counsel Dana Seetahal was murdered on Hamilton Holder Street, Woodbrook, while heading home from Ma Pau casino on Ariapita Avenue. Ali is on $25,000 bail for another matter. Ali, 29, is also due to reappear in court after he was charged for possession of wild meat in August. Ali had appeared before Arima Magistrate Indra Jagroo along with Roget Boucher, 29, and Kevan Modeste, 33, charged with

possession of wild meat but had pleaded not guilty. Ali’s attorney Criston J William said Ali was a father of two and had two wives and no convictions under his name. The case has been adjourned. On July 22, Ali and 17 other people were arrested at the Carapo mosque in relation to several enquiries including kidnapping and gang-related activities but three days later were released with no charges against them. Following his release on July 27, Ali told reporters he felt as though he was being victimised by the police as he claimed he was not doing anything wrong or illegal, yet was still being targeted.

Rowley slams ‘naked political campaigning’ Trinidad Express - Two Saturdays ago, Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley had charged the People’s Partnership Government was embarking on a $26 million electoral advertising campaign using taxpayers’ money. Rowley had said last Saturday at the People’s National Movement (PNM) Women’s League annual conference that $26 million had been set aside for use by the Government Information Services Ltd (GISL) in advertisements “to brainwash people into believing that the Government was working for them”. Speaking to the Express on Wednesday, Rowley asked: “Why does the Government suddenly want

Wednesday he planned to write the Integrity Commission about the use of State funds to finance the United National Congress’s (UNC) election campaign. Rowley noted billboards had been placed all over the country. “This is being paid for by your taxpayer dollars. It is naked political campaigning,” he said. He stressed permanent sec-retaries in various minis-tries were being encou-raged to disburse funds and to spend public money on this cam-paign. “If that is not wrong, you tell me what is,” he said. (AFP Photo/Aizar Raldes) La Paz (AFP) - Bolivians began counting votes yesterday in elections widely expected to give indigenous President Evo Morales a third term, along with a legislative majority needed to push through his leftist reforms. Preliminary results were expected around 8:00 pm (0000 GMT today), and a 70percent count by about midnight, said the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, as polling stations closed. Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, has blended left-wing economic policy with nationalist rhetoric and a focus on indigenous rights and the environment — all while presiding over an economic boom. The incumbent was estimated to have 59 percent support heading into the election, according to surveys.

That puts him more than 40 points clear of his nearest rivals: business magnate Samuel Doria Medina, with 18 percent, and the conservative former president Jorge Quiroga, with nine percent. “Bolivians are a democratic people and we expect a massive turnout that will show the country’s unity,” Morales said after casting his ballot in Chapare, in Bolivia’s central cocagrowing region. Some six million Bolivians were registered to cast ballots in the presidential and congressional polls, predicted to expose the weakness of a fragmented opposition. To ensure a peaceful vote, the authorities banned alcohol consumption in public from 48 hours before the election until 12 hours after. Carrying firearms was also banned.

Posters bearing the slogan “With Evo, we’re doing well” blanketed La Paz on election day, far outshining the opposition’s propaganda, which was conspicuously absent. Doria, 55, complained after voting in La Paz that international observers with the Organization of American States had been praising the elections even before polls closed. “That’s not normal,” he said. “I ask all Bolivians to go to vote, don’t wait to the last minute,” said the wealthy cement magnate. “What’s at stake is our democracy, our nation.” Alvaro Colom, the former Guatemalan president who heads the OAS delegation, said the observers were impartial. “The election is unfolding normally, there have been no serious incidents,” he told AFP.

Eusi Kwayana should repudiate his past for reconciliation DEAR EDITOR, Historians are well aware that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”” as George Santayana so wisely wrote. When Mr Eusi Kwayana can completely clear his conscience about his role in Guyana’s turbulent history, similar visits to other Doobay Renal Centres may dispense need for his own Field of Akeldama. The truth does indeed set one free. “A person who admits being wrong, pays less”, has been a well known Ugandan proverb; no doubt a very good reminder for a hefty deposit from Mr Kwayana for - the usual black monument thing. After his visit to the Doobay Renal Centre at Annandale, right next door to Buxton, he ensured it was made clear he was invited by Dr Budhendranath Doobay, “the worthy pioneer of the project” who is a devout Hindu Brahmin physician residing in Canada. Writing in the KN of 8-1014 titled “Doobay Renal Centre- a beacon of hope” such “A visit seemed to me like a pipe dream” come through for the aging rebel on a crutch. That Doobay Renal Centre can only continue to be an excellent credit to that magnanimous Annandale Indian Hindu family, regardless who visits, regardless of race. Also noteworthy is the aging Buxtonian pointing out that it was not him, but rather “Dr Doobay (who) had recalled what is lost to the wider history but what to small communities was important. His father, the eminent Pandit Ramsahai Doobay, and I, a rural high school principal, separately accepted an invitation from the British Colonial Secretary, Mr Duncan Sandys during his fact-finding visit to Guyana in early July, 1963. It was an invitation to meet at short notice on the big bridge between Buxton and Annandale and shake hands in the presence of large crowds from both villages, in order to help defuse

tensions” due to the destabilizing CIA financed TUC 80-day strike. Mr Kwayana played his role all too very well at that time to secure his objectives. God does not make mistakes. So beloved were Indians who predominantly supported the PPP that God first sent his beloved son Jesus Christ, (John 3;16) to save them - who apparently failed? Then on further reflection God promptly dispatched his two-alsomuch-dearly-beloved Sandys and Kwayana to shake hands and make peace through a Hindu Pandit? God must have a very special interest in Guyana to have dispatched President Jimmy Carter to ensure free and fair elections which saw the PNC removed and the Jagans PPP/C re elected in 1992! That Annandale/Buxton orchestrated drama did indeed take place and eased political tensions. But the record does not show that Mr Kwayana himself subsequently became and remained any more peacefully transformed by that specific public political encounter with the venerated Hindu Pandit which he now extols. Lamentably, no significant proactive effort to influence UWI’s Dr Kean Gibson to withdraw her scurrilous book attacking Hinduism after he originally shook the eminent Pandit’s hand has ever occurred. It would still be an awesome signal most welcome in gratitude for past Indian munificence wouldn’t it? Denied “critical support”, by the opposition African leadership, most timely when it is most needed by Indians on such issues, it still remains a nasty blot, fogging up better race relations in Guyana. Indians who were vilified for practising “pagan” religions, have still endured within and outside Guyana. The Doobays have demonstrably moved on.

Their Renal Centre has effectively debunked the racism charges against their treasured but maligned Hindu religious practices. But Dr Gibson’s book still continues to perpetuate falsehoods. Is this the best way to engender trust? Mr Kwayana as a favoured earlier dispatched divine “ chosen one”, still alive, can still work a miracle or two and restore our faith in local goods. Now despite all the divine truth which the British and American archives have confirmed about their accurate and active role in Guyana’s affairs, how credible is Mr Kwayana misguided attempts to further hoodwink Guyanese about our history? He still wants us to believe that both AngloAmerican governments were not, in cahoots, not guilty in destabilizing the PPP government with him as a star player? During that period Mr Kwayana specifically attacked Mr Burnham and the PNC for conceding that should the PPP win the 1964 elections they would be entitled to lead Guyana to independence. Under his “creole meche meche” broadside specifically blasting the PNC for “betraying black people and leading them into a new slavery,” the PNC promptly reversed its earlier commitment. Moving into the 21st century, and please forgive me, a mentally disconnected Mr Kwayana still perseveres by publicly regurgitating private well intentioned conversation to embellish and perpetuate fallacies in which he was conspiratorially involved. How credible is Mr Kwayana who wants us to actually believe that “On Her Majesty’s Service” the Englishman Sandys by “invitation made separately”, with both village elders , both without any available

telephone service but just by mysterious “short notice” (jhandi conch or talking drum transmittal ?) they were to coincidentally meet on “the big bridge” and “shake hands” in the “presence of large crowds” (plural!) from both villages, in order “to help defuse tensions” after the CIA, with British approval, had massively financed the PNC- UF -TUC oppositions’ 80-day strike to destabilize the 1960s PPP government! All the above many American-BritishOpposition goals were achieved, supposedly without any advanced premeditated planning both in the 1960s and 1900s if Mr Kwayana is correct?. All successfully and completely achieved without Mr Kwayana’s

whatsoever and whomsoever direct input? Mr Kwayana will continue to remain a consummate political performer should he succeed anytime in convincing anyone that he was not in conspiracy with his former ancestral colonial slave-master, both supposedly Gods own “redeeming divine peacemakers” sent get rid of the PPP by a symbolical hand shake proclaiming peace on earth and goodwill among men with a pious Hindu Pandit. While that 1960s barb wire fence which was erected like a Berlin Wall symbolically separating Buxton from Annandale was afterwards dismantled it still remains embedded in some Buxtonians minds. The PNC

opposition which the external forces wanted to win the 1964 elections effectively took over, and the rest became all too familiar Guyanese history. Until our Kwayanas become courageous enough to confess, atone and make reparations for our violent misguided past, Guyanese can only wander in the desert for their elusive promised land - despite what they still possess. A more peaceful future cannot continue to be held hostage by the those in automatic destructive mode. The usual refrain is to say “yes we can!” When the cocks soon crow in parliament we will know for sure by which road lies our destiny ahead. Sultan Mohamed

LOOK HOW PETTY THESE PEOPLE ARE DEAR EDITOR, Please allow me to give my two cents on what is obviously a clear case of pettiness and vindictiveness by the leaders of our dear land of Guyana. At first I did not want to get involved but recent disclosures about charges being laid against the Publisher of your newspaper and his wife have forced me to vent my anger in this manner. One would think that the government would have embraced Lall for his leadership of the newspaper which has opened the eyes of this nation to the rampant corruption among government officials. However they have chosen to be petty and go after him with trumped up

charges for driving two Lexus SUVs. If by driving two Lexus vehicles of his friends makes Glen Lall and his wife guilty, then so too are the GRA commissioner general’s children who are often seen driving his duty free vehicles; so too are the wives and relatives of government officials who drive their vehicles. All the vehicles that come into this country duty free are not being driven by the persons in whose name they came.

So it’s a shame that Kurshid Sattaur could be so petty to try and tarnish the name of someone who has been championing the fight to make Guyana an equal opportunity country. In light of the recent revelations that have been highlighted by this newspaper, Sattaur should not wait to be fired for embarrassing the government and this entire nation, he should pack his bags peacefully and go to avoid the humiliation. Kurds hold off Islamic State in Kobani; fighters strike in Iraq (Reuters) - Kurdish defenders held off Islamic State militants in Syria’s border town of Kobani yesterday, but the fighters struck with deadly bombings in Iraq, killing dozens of Kurds in the north and assassinating a provincial police commander in the west. The top U.S. military officer suggested that Washington, which has ruled out joining ground combat in either Iraq or Syria, could nevertheless increase its role “advising and assisting” Iraqi troops on the ground in future. A U.S.-led military coalition has been bombing Islamic State fighters who hold swathes of territory in both Iraq and Syria, countries involved in complex multisided civil wars in which nearly every country in the Middle East has a stake. In Syria, the main focus in recent days has been on the mainly Kurdish town of Kobani near the Turkish border, where Kurdish defenders have been trying to halt an advance by fighters who have driven 200,000 refugees across the border. The jihadists have laid

siege to the town for nearly four weeks and fought their way into it in recent days, taking control of almost half of the town. A U.N. envoy has said thousands of people could be massacred if Kobani falls. As night fell yesterday, the town centre was under heavy artillery and mortar fire, Ocalan Iso, deputy head of the Kobani defence council, said by Skype from inside the town. Heavy clashes were underway in the east and southeast, he said, with neither side gaining ground. Idris Nassan, deputy foreign minister in the Kurdish administration for the Kobani district, said heavy fighting had begun around nightfall in the streets. Kurdish fighters had caught attackers in an ambush, he said from the town. Gunbattles were taking place yesterday near administrative buildings the jihadists had seized two days before, it said. The fighting in Kobani has taken place within view of Turkish tanks at the frontier, but Turkey has

of rioting in which 38 people were killed. Turkish Kurdish leaders have said their government’s failure to aid the defence of Kobani could destroy Turkey’s own peace process to end decades of insurgency which killed 40,000 people. Kobani’s heavily outgunned Kurdish defenders say they want Turkey to let them bring in reinforcements and weapons to fend off the Islamic State fighters, who seized heavy artillery and tanks seized from the fleeing Iraqi army in

June. The White House says it will not allow U.S. troops to be dragged into another ground war in Iraq, where President Barack Obama withdrew forces in 2011 after an eight year occupation. Nevertheless, the highest ranking U.S. military officer, General Martin Dempsey, suggested in an interview broadcast yesterday that U.S. troops would probably need to play a bigger role alongside Iraqi forces on the ground in future. The biggest army in the

US says Turkey OKs use of bases against militants AREQUIPA, Peru (AP) — Turkey will let U.S. and coalition forces use its bases, including a key installation within 100 miles of the Syrian border, for operations against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, American defense officials said yesterday. But progress in negotiations with Turkey — including Ankara’s agreement to train several thousand Syrian moderate rebels — may not be enough to stop the massacre of civilians in Syria’s border town of Kobani, where intense fighting continues. The Obama administration had been pressing Ankara to play a larger role against the extremists, who have taken control of large swaths of Syria and Iraq, including territory on Turkey’s border, and sent refugees fleeing into Turkey. U.S. officials confirmed Saturday that Ankara had agreed to train Syrian moderate forces on Turkish soil. A Turkish government official said yesterday that Turkey put the number at 4,000 opposition fighters and said they would be screened by Turkish intelligence. Also yesterday, officials confirmed that Turkey agreed to let U.S. and coalition fighter aircraft launch operations against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria from Turkish bases, including Incirlik Air Base in the south. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who has been traveling in South America, has said the U.S. wanted access to the Turkish bases. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss private talks between the Americans and Turks.

area belongs to Turkey, a NATO member which so far has refused to join the U.S.led coalition striking Islamic State. Its reluctance has frustrated Washington as well as Turkey’s own angry Kurdish minority. The United States used army Apache attack helicopters for the first time this past week to provide close air support to Iraqi forces in Anbar west of Baghdad. Use of low-flying helicopters is far riskier than bombing from jets but allows closer cooperation with troops engaged in combat on the ground. Dempsey said the decision was taken to halt fighters who might otherwise have been able to attack Baghdad’s airport, which is on the capital’s western outskirts. “They overrun the Iraqi unit, it was a straight shot to the airport. So, we’re not going to allow that to happen. We need that airport,” he said. National Security Adviser Susan Rice told NBC’s Meet the Press that ground combat by U.S. troops was still ruled out. “We’ll do our part from the air and in many other respects in terms of building up the capacity of the Iraqis and the Syrian opposition, the moderates. But we are not going to be in a ground war again in Iraq,” she said. Republican Senator John McCain, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, said Obama’s strategy was failing. He did not think Islamic State could take Baghdad but fighters could take the airport and hit the capital with suicide bombers.

Texas health worker becomes first person to contract Ebola in U.S. (Reuters) - A Texas health worker has contracted Ebola after treating a Liberian who died of the disease in Dallas last week, raising concern about how U.S. medical guidelines aimed at stopping the spread of the disease were breached. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, where the new case was announced yesterday, has already faced criticism for its management of the infection. The infected worker, a woman who was not named, is the first person to contract the disease in the United States. She had close and frequent contact during the 11-day treatment of Thomas Eric Duncan, who died on Wednesday, health officials said. The current Ebola outbreak is the worst outbreak on record and has killed more than 4,000 people, mostly in West Africa’s Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Duncan, a Liberian, was exposed to Ebola in his home country and developed the disease while visiting the United States. The new case prompted President Barack Obama to order federal authorities to

take additional steps to ensure the American medical system is prepared to follow correct protocols in dealing with Ebola, the ‘White House said yesterday. There was no word yet how the health worker was infected, but the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it indicated a professional lapse that may have caused other health workers at the hospital to be infected as well. “We don’t know what occurred in the care of the index patient, the original patient, in Dallas, but at some point there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection,” CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden told a news conference. Hospital officials said the worker had been wearing CDC-recommended protective gear during treatment, including gowns, gloves, masks and shields. “We are evaluating other potential healthcare worker exposures because if this individual was exposed, which they were, it is possible that other individuals were exposed,” Frieden said.

Tests by the CDC confirmed the patient had been infected with Ebola. Frieden said there was one person who may have had contact with the infected health worker when she could transmit the disease and that person is being monitored. None of the 10 people who had close contact with Duncan or 38 people who had contact with that group have shown any symptoms, state health officials said. The infected worker was not among the 48 being monitored. In a sign of concern over the spread of Ebola, a patient in Massachusetts who recently returned from Liberia and was displaying symptoms of Ebola was transferred from a medical clinic to a Boston hospital yesterday, the hospital said. The patient has not been confirmed to have the virus. Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates hospital in Braintree, where the patient first went, was closed briefly to deal with the case but reopened, Ben Kruskal, a physician and chief of infectious disease, said in a statement.

Ukraine leader sacks defence minister ahead of Russia talks Kiev (AFP) - President Petro Poroshenko dismissed Ukraine’s third defence minister of the year yesterday in a surprise decision ahead of high-level talks with Moscow on bringing peace to the Western-backed former Soviet republic. Poroshenko’s official website said he would nominate a new defence chief today after “accepting the resignation” of Valeriy Geletey, who was only appointed in July. The sacking highlighted a sense of failure that has enveloped the once-proud force as the six-month conflict with pro-Russian rebels drags on and the death toll from fighting approaches 3,400. The military’s performance has humiliated Ukrainians who had been celebrating the success of a bloody popular uprising that ousted the then Kremlinbacked leader in February and propelled Kiev on its Westward course. Geletey’s removal threatened to undermine Poroshenko’s position ahead of a crunch meeting with Russian President Vladimir

Valeriy Geletey Putin in Milan on Friday that will also include German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The Kremlin said Merkel — a vocal Poroshenko ally who helped arrange the two leaders’ first meeting on the sidelines of a Normandy

summit in June — called Putin on Sunday “to discuss preparations” for Milan. Poroshenko told the nation he had “no illusions” going into his fourth meeting with Putin since rising to power in May. “These will not be easy negotiations, but I am ready for them,” Poroshenko said in a yesterday evening television address. “My goal (is) our country’s unshakable independence, its territorial integrity, the inviolability of its borders, and the return of peace,” he said. Putin appeared to strengthen his hand with the order on Saturday for 17,600 Russian troops deployed near Ukraine to return to their bases — a decision analysts linked to his desire to see biting Western sanctions suspended or at least rolled back.

Lewis Hamilton wins Russian GP ahead of Nico Rosberg BBC Sport - Britain’s Lewis Hamilton dominated the Russian Grand Prix to take his ninth win of the year, his fourth in a row, and extend his championship lead. Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg fought back following a first-lap error to take second place, sealing the constructors’ title for Mercedes. Rosberg trails Hamilton by 17 points with three races remaining and a maximum of 100 points available. Hamilton equalled Nigel Mansell’s record for most wins by a Briton - 31. The race was overshadowed by the sport’s concern for Marussia driver Jules Bianchi, who is in a critical condition after a crash during the Japanese Grand Prix last weekend. There was a tribute to the 25-year-old Frenchman on the grid from both his team and the other drivers. Marussia decided to run only one car in the race, leaving Bianchi’s fully prepared but on stands in the garage. The race was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was instrumental in realising F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone’s 30-year desire to have a grand prix in Russia. Russia is paying a reputed $50m (£31m) a year for the race, believed to be the largest hosting fee of any grand prix. Unusually, Ecclestone stayed until the end of the race, sitting with Putin in the hospitality grandstand. Putin then joined the drivers in the pre-podium room and on the

podium, where he presented Hamilton with the winner’s trophy and Mercedes executive director (technical) Paddy Lowe with that for winning constructor. Hamilton had looked the superior of the drivers in the dominant Mercedes team throughout the weekend. “Nico did a great job to recover,” he said. “The car was performing really well. It’s history for us. I feel very proud to be a part of it. To get the first constructors’ championship for MercedesBenz is a wonderful day.” The only time Hamilton looked briefly vulnerable was when Rosberg pulled alongside him into the first proper corner, Turn Two. But the German braked too late, badly locking up both front wheels and taking to the escape road. Rosberg held on in front, but was immediately told to hand the place back to Hamilton because he had broken the rules by gaining an advantage through going off the track. He replied saying he would have to pit immediately to change his tyres. He rejoined on the harder ‘medium’ tyre and proceeded to drive a measured race. Rejoining at the back, Rosberg picked his way through the backmarkers and emerged in third place, right behind Valtteri Bottas, after the leading cars made their pit stops. Rosberg then dived inside Bottas into Turn Two to move into second, and despite Williams’s initial belief that Rosberg would run into

tyre trouble, he was able to hang on without trouble to the end. Rosberg, nearly 20 seconds behind Hamilton, put in a couple of quick laps to briefly close the gap a little, before Hamilton posted his own fastest lap to prove he was in total control. His ninth win of the year means Rosberg, who has won four, can now not match his team-mate for victories in the remaining races. But the championship fight is still wide open, helped by the award of double points in the final race in Abu Dhabi. No matter what happens in the next race in the United States, Hamilton is mathematically unable to win the title until at least the Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season. The title battle is now essentially down to the two Mercedes drivers as Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, in third place, is 92 points adrift of Hamilton. Williams’s Bottas was third in Sochi ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button. The Englishman had been in a battle with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, but the Spaniard dropped back behind the second McLaren of Kevin Magnussen with a slow pit stop. Alonso fended off a challenge from Ricciardo in the later stages of the race to take sixth. Bottas was unable to match the Mercedes but was out of reach of the McLarens, with Button again proving a more able race driver than Magnussen.

3rd Kadir Mohamed Mem. /FSCC Ounce of Gold Cycle Road Race

Michael Anthony rides unbeaten again By Franklin Wilson Linden based junior cyclist Michael Anthony pedaled to another convincing road race win when he carted off the top prize for the 3rd annual Kadir Mohamed Memorial cycle road race organised by the Flying Stars Cycle Club (FSCC) yesterday. The unattached Anthony, who won both the senior and junior categories walked away with one ounce of gold, a trophy and two sprint prizes, his winning time was Three Hours 19 Minutes 26 Seconds. Just back from the 9th Junior Caribbean Championships that took place in Suriname and ahead of this week’s five-stage event, Anthony out-sprinted a talented bunch of riders to add this prestigious event to his collection of wins this year. Occupying the 2nd – 8th place positions in the race that attracted international participation and considered to be one of the most lucrative one day races in Guyana were Reuben Campanioni (Team Coco’s USA), Paul De Nobrega (Team Alanis), Robin Persaud (Carlton Wheelers), Alanzo Ambrose (FSCC),

Christopher Holder (Team Coco’s Guyana), Mark Harris (Roraima Bikers Club), Mario King (United Cycle Club). The top six riders separated themselves from the main pack just around Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara on the upward journey and constantly increased the advantage as the race which commenced at Homestretch Avenue just outside the offices of the now relocated, National Sports Commission, matured. The seniors and juniors went all the way to Dora on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning to the starting line for the finish, covering approximately 72miles. The other sprint prizes were shared by Persaud (2), Christopher Griffith, Holder, Ambrose and De Nobrega took one each. Taking the 2nd to 4th position behind Anthony in the junior category were Alanzo Ambrose (Caribbean Cycling Championships bronze medalist), Kravite Jeffrey, and Griffith. The juvenile (youth) category which saw riders proceeding to Splashmin’s and return saw Raphael ‘Sniper’ Leung, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal

at this year’s junior Caribbean Championships, taking the first place and was followed the line by Jornol Yearwood. Leung’s winning time was Two Hours 22 Minutes 16 Seconds. The veterans Under and Over-45 covered the same distance as the juveniles. Ruling the roost once again in the Under-45 category was Junior Niles whose winning time was Two Hours 17 Minutes 08 Seconds. Stephen Fernandes and Jaikarran Sukhai completed the top three in this category, whilst the Over-45 winner in Two Hours 24 Minutes 22 Seconds was Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson ahead of Kennard Lovell and Linden Blackman in that order. President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) Cheryl Thompson in brief remarks after the race, complimented the 44 riders that braved the very hot conditions to compete in a race that was a success. Ms. Thompson thanked the family of the late Kadir Mohamed and Kadir Enterprise of Bartica for their sponsorship of the events in its third year. She singled out for special mention the junior riders while complimenting Anthony for his win.

GT Beer/Berbice Cup 2014

Victoria Kings and Ann’s Grove stroll into semis One-time Kashif and Shanghai Champion, Vi c t o r i a K i n g s e a s i l y disposed of New Amsterdam United 3-1, while Ann’s Grove made light work of Golden Grove Stars with a 5-1 drubbing when the GT Beer/Berbice Cup KO football tournament continued on Saturday last at the Monedderlust FC ground in Number Five Village, West Coast Berbice. The Kings proved their superiority by virtually sealing the win at the end of the first period with a comfortable 3-0 advantage against a NA United side that offered little resistance. Aubrey Gibson put Kings ahead in the 28th minute and his ever-green striking partner, Winston Pompey doubled the score ten minutes later. A minute before the half, Seon

Robinson made it 3-0 to end a most dominant period watched by another fairsized crowd. In the 2nd segment the Kings continued to dictate the pace of the game but failed to add to their tally and in the 70th minute they were reduced to ten when Sherlock Dowden received his 2nd Yellow Card and was ejected. United netted a consolation goal 4 minutes into injury time thanks to Adrian Adams. In the 2nd encounter, Ann’s Grove, despite playing an East Coast League fixture earlier in the day, went on a goal rampage against an ordinary looking Golden Grove side. Goals by Kevon Barry (11th), Kevin Bailey (26) and Dean Rogers (31) gave Ann’s Grove a 3-0 lead at the half of the 80-minute affair. In the 2nd half, however, it was Golden

Grove who found the back of the net first as Randy Stoby scored in the 63rd minute. Ten minutes later Nkosi Denny responded for Ann’s Grove to make it 41. In the 3rd minute of injury time Shemar Barry made it 5-1 when he added his name to the scorer’s list to end a miserable night for Golden Grove. The two winners will now meet in the other semifinal to guarantee the 8team KO competition an East Coast versus Berbice final for the $400,000 first prize. The other semi-final will be an all-Berbice affair with Cougars FC opposing the Cup holders, Monedderlust FC. The two semi-finals will be played this coming Saturday, October 18th, while the 3rd place play-off and championship match is set for Saturday October 25th.
