Mother of four shot in back while sleeping at home

o l i c e a r e investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident of 24-year-old Alecia Henry at her Front Road, West La Penitence, Georgetown home early yesterday morning. The woman was asleep in her home that she shares with her four children and spouse when the incident occurred.

In an interview, the victim's spouse, Kevin Carter, told Kaieteur News that he was barely awake when he heard several gunshots ringing out in the area. However, he said that he did not think it was something to be alarmed about so he stayed in bed.

The men arrested were identified as Ramu Singh from Berbice while the cop is said to be a corporal whose name was given as Quincy Bacchus. From indications the car was being tracked from Berbice. The ganja was found in the trunk of the car.

Bank of Guyana probes sudden - cash available at banks rise of US dollar at $216 - Governor - more than US$6M in currency plugged into banks for year

ank of Guyana has started a p r o b e t o determine the reasons of the US currency reaching over $230 over the weekend.

Yesterday, Bank of Guyana's governor, Dr. Gobind Ganga, when questioned, said that the matter has engaged the attention of Government also.

A combination of factors has been blamed on the rates, stable for years at around $205-210 for US$1.

For this year, so far, the Bank of Guyana has released over US$6M in cash to commercial banks to assist with the demand.

“We have been paying attention and it has the attention of the Government too,” Dr. Ganga said.

He disclosed that US cash can be available at the banks for about $216.

Of course, the bank official said, most likely not large amounts of cash would be readily available.

However, it is on the streets that the Bank of Guyana would be worried.

The exchange rate was over $233 yesterday at city cambios. In the last decade, with the economy chugging along with its traditional goods and services, there exchange rates has rarely slide back $215.

However, a number of things have been happening with the economy.

There has been a large infusion of foreign investments in especially the oil and gas sector.

The exports have not

been matching up.

The Chinese has reportedly entered the rice market with Venezuela.

They require US dollars in return, reportedly, for being paid in gold and oil.

Trinidadians and their companies have been taking out the US dollars.

So too have the telephone companies.

To compound matters, cross border trade with Brazil, Suriname, and Venezuela especially, have seen a rise in demand for the US cash.

The situation with cash shortage has surfaced in recent years with Bank of Guyana halting its trade of Trinidad and Barbados dollars after finding that those foreign currencystarved countries were

Never mind she lost her home. She pushed her 62year-old husband out of their home before it was totally engulfed in flames.

The man was confined to a wheelchair due to an amputation and was said to be inside of the house when the fire started.

The entire threebedroom home was gutted and nothing saved leaving Premraj, her husband, daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren- ages four and 10- with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

According to Premraj she went to collect her granddaughter from school and was in the lower flat of the home reading a slip the child received from her teacher.

“I bring this child home from school because I normally take care of her. I went to her school, collect she, come home and change her clothes. She bring home a slip from the school and I tell her baby let me see the slip,” the woman recalled.

She explained that normally she would help out with the child and if the

school needs money or anything she pitches in.

While in her home, her

neighbour's son called out to her asking if she was cooking, to which she

What to do first?

Forgive first? Or face racial horrors first? That is a riveting murder case down in Texas. It is very much about Guyana, too. Which one should it be?

Right off the bat, forgiving was arresting. In its grand human reaching. That through pain, there can be forgiving through recruiting towards conversing, listening, addressing, and solving. There is a problem, one from which many terrible injustices did arise and still do.

The first problem is to discern that even the lily lack purity. That there are no quick, easy answers. There are, though, even accusers and healers who come to the table with a stained hand. The table of struggling to corner the monstrosities of racial toxins -the histories of ages, the degradations of body, the restorations of mind, the solvents for the soul. All are present, they flourish richly, vindictively.

The hurt not participating, but condoning. The innocent not speaking but associating. The angry not venturing but supporting. With the rages, the denials, the dodges. There is waiting without going anywhere. In the quest for racial justice, there must be readiness of the willing towards racial reconciling. Forgiving. That might be the better start. Forgive first.In this way, the sullenness of “who are you to talk…. Of who cast the first stone comes last. Sets back; digging in of heels in endless accusations and recriminations. The circumference is infinite; the passions palpable, the injuries intolerable.Everyone comes to some meeting place: all are perpetrators, all are victims. All are losers in a tragedy with no winning, no rising; no respite from the hatreds and distrusts; no harbour of contemplation for what is wrong, other than being wronged; no continuation to seek what is right and find the right. Because all are rigidly entombed in the rightness of their hurts and their causes, then there are only wrongs, great wrongs.

Do we not know this? Do we want to go where this can take us in Guyana? Do we cherish preserving the culture of criminalizing each other-whether red blooded or whitecollared-and that’s that and that’s all that there is to this now meaningless existence in the richest, most promising of lands? Whether in Texas or across Guyana, there must be willingness to take the first step; to point finger(s) first at self; self only. It cannot be single sectional.

What is there to forgive here? First, it is that we have stumbled terribly and repeatedly into the graves that we dig for one another. Thus, we are fastened at the hip, in the casket, in the stone of the ground, and still with stone in our hearts. We can tick off the evils on the fingers of one hand, then the other. And when this country is done counting, there are still not enough hands when 750,000 pairs of such have been accounted for torturously, monotonously.Monotonously because it is the same culture and outlook, the same unstirring beliefs and the same unpromising future. Round and round and through and through.

The oil lubricates and inflames the embers.

Face the violence first runs the great risk of triggering waterfalls of the overfilling, unforgiving negatives. Gushing.

Rushing. Washing away listening. Inundating and reinforcing the harming. Reliving the injuring. By the other, as in the next man and woman-in the sorry and sordid annals of man, it is always someone else-with no space left for creeping towards the uplifting that comes from progressing.

Why not start from the other direction?

The cleansing slate and state of willing, bona fide humility: we have wronged each other. From the first days of our nationhood, to the first decades of this so far inglorious, rupturing century. None is untouched. No waiting on the other fellow. No holding back. We cannot be that haughty that that which stares in the face scream this single truth: in our present, divided, destructive state, Guyana is going nowhere. We are not. We may never.

Which is it going to be? Rehashing of all the ills first?

Uncovering all the wounds next? Re-experiencing all the agonies last? And then again and again eternally?

Why not the other way first? Come humbly. Speak honestly. Reach gently. Exist differently. Reconcile healingly. Live purposefully.

Teamwork and improved performance is a reflection of good management DEAR EDITOR, After reading the recent article on GuySuco’s poor performance it is becoming very evident that the company needs to improve the management team. Four facilities is all they need to maintain and to think that the operators’ input is also being neglected in such a small and what should be a close knit team is quite eye opening.

When I was with my former company we had 64 facilities to manage globally and every quarter myself and my peers on the executive team would visit each region to review performance and we would ensure we took the time to visit the facilities and walk the floor, ensuring the local team had an opportunity to show us what was happening at their location.

This helps one know how the facility is being managed.

GuySuCo has in the past struggled with only seven to eight facilities and now they are having trouble managing only four. There is definitely an organization capability issue and the management team needs to be held accountable for the neglect that is resulting in poor performance. It is unacceptable that not one of the estates can hit their target. I hope

the bonus structure reflects pay for performance.

As for NICIL, the same holds true.

It should be run by a team that has more general management experience that can structure financial instruments correctly at the best rates. Also teamwork with other entities should not be an issue if they are astute in carrying out their business. If the CJIA project is an example of what to expect then we are awaiting a disappointment. CJIA has failed on all three key project measures.

It is late, with major issues that have caused a shutdown to key aspects of its functionality. It has also been over budget even with a reduced scope of work.

Those we choose to reward for performance need to demonstrate that they are effective in their current responsibilities. In many circles people are of the opinion that nepotism is destroying key areas of our economy and as a result the lives of the common man. Only good management practices will be able to reverse this perception.

Ramkarran Deserves the Presidency DEAR EDITOR, Reference is made to “Ralphie get he plaything at last” (KN Oct 6). Finally, Mr. Ramkarran has been anointed the Presidential nomination of a political party. It is long overdue and deserving. He is the star attraction of ANUG; people who are attracted to the party are voting Ralphie, not ANUG. And you are right unlike other run of the mill politicians, he is at least honest.

Ramkarran is likeable and respected around the country. He is the only political figure held in high esteem by virtually every so called floating voter and by the elite of society.

Had Ramkarran been chosen as the nominee of the PPP in 1997, 2011, and 2015, the party would have won a landslide victory and the nation avoided many of the problems that have overwhelmed the country. Corruption and racism would have been largely curtailed if not altogether absent under a Ramkarran Presidency.

The PPP would have remained in power. And had he been chosen as the consensus candidate for the coalition in 2015, it would have won a comfortable majority (without controversy of fraud and recounting of votes) and the country would have been all the better with none of the controversies (on constitutional violations) that have dominated the news since 2016. If he were to be chosen as the nominee in March 2020 of an opposition coalition, it would win a landslide victory; there would be no regrets on March 3.

I speak as someone who has the good fortune of seeing polling data and who has interacted with diplomats and the elite of the society (business persons, intellectuals, scholars, academics, professionals, university students,

and the “Who Is Who”).

Ramkarran will not win the Presidency for ANUG, but if either one of the major parties wishes to clinch a guaranteed victory, Ramkaran is the man who will take them way past the finishing line. At least that is what the polls show now; opinion can change over the next five months.

Ramkarran was given a raw deal in the PPP, the party he and his father (Boysee) helped to build; Boysee was not a man of Letters but he was perhaps the sharpest and wittiest debater in parliament and a man of the people.

Ironically, Boysee was also treated badly within the PPP denied of his rightful position after Cheddi Jagan similar to how Balram Singh Rai was shunted aside. His son, Ralph was “literally thrown out” (forced to resign around 2012) after abusive language was hurled at him by those who played virtually no role in building the PPP. He was by-passed in 1997 in favour of Janet Jagan and a young Bharrat Jagdeo on the A Team.

And he was by-passed again in 2011 in an engineered selection of the Presidential nominee that would prove fatal to the PPP. This would lead to division and the defeat of the PPP and its ouster from office, (perhaps forever, many feel).

In 2010 and 2011, I conducted opinion surveys (published in Stabroek News and elsewhere) showing Ramkaran and Moses Nagamootoo as the most popular political figures in the PPP and who would take the party to a landslide victory.

The polls showed Donald Ramotar as the least popular and if selected as nominee, the PPP would face an uphill task to retain office.

The polls showed that aside from Moses and Ralph,

the party would also win if Robert Persaud, Frank Anthony, Priya Manikchand or Navin Chanderpaul were the nominee. (Robert Persaud is perhaps among the most unpopular and disliked figures today – how fast a person can lose his shine). The PPP engineered the nomination of Ramotar in 2011 knowing fully well it was too risky and it could lose power.

Nagamootoo left and joined AFC. The PPP lost its majority in parliament in the late November elections; the PPP claimed that one polling division with several thousand votes on the West Coast, its stronghold, was not counted and would have given it a majority. Ramkarran agreed to become AG to Ramotar and was set to be sworn in but for some inexplicable reason he was shunted aside.

Not long after, there was a nasty attack on Ramkarran

by Gail Teixeira; there was deafening silence from Ramotar who did not see it necessary to reprimand Gail.

Ramkarran resigned. Jagdeo, who was overseas when it all happened, was critical of how the party handled the Ramkarran matter urging him not to leave.

In polls conducted from 2012 to 2015, voters urged the return of Ramkarran and Nagamootoo to PPP. Polls showed that if either one was to get the nomination of PPP in 2015, the party would win.

Ramotar was struggling to win a majority; not gaining cross over traction. No effort was made by party leadership to bring back the two erstwhile towering figures. A poll also showed that Ramkarran as Prime Ministerial nomination to a Ramotar Presidential candidacy would also take PPP to victory.

Ramkarran had crossover appeal. The PPP gambled again with Ramotar and without Ramkarran and lost. (PPP

claimed it was cheated in Region 8 and by fake statements of poll. Did the US Charge derail a recount that would have re-elected Ramotar?)

On the 2015 elections, sources told me when there was a deadlock during negotiations between APNU and AFC on the Presidential nominee. Ramkarran was on the verge of becoming the consensus candidate.

Sources told me that Moses scuttled Ralph’s nomination by convincing AFC colleagues to accept the PM position for himself.

Ramkarran was cheated of the Presidency twice. The rest is history and the resulting problems that plague the nation. Some say the PPP has not learned lessons of the past in the way it selects its nominee.

Ramkarran is well respected around the nation by all ethnic groups. He lacks charm and does not possess the charisma of a Jagdeo or Nagamootoo. But he is a likeable figure. People see him as a man of integrity and decency who is not intoxicated with power. He is not someone who seeks vengeance or out to victimize opponents or critics.

He is the only Presidential candidate who has political support among the two major ethnic groups and Mixed race voters. He is held in high regards.

He could very well transform the politics of Guyana with his advocacy of power sharing. But this can only happen if elected with enough balance of power seats. Surveys I recently conducted in July and August showed him (voters are supporting Ramkarran, not ANUG) winning seats but the election is almost six months away and support could change.

GECOM’s Chairman and CEO should present themselves to be interviewed

What is being done to protect the rights of citizens?

DEAR EDITOR, On Sunday last, I saw an American network television interview with the Head of the Broward County Elections Commission in Florida responding to questions about the competence of the administration and the integrity of the County’s Elections Commission.

It occurred to me, watching this programme, that it is high time that the Chairman and Chief Elections Officer of our Elections Commission do the same and present themselves to be interviewed by our media.

Why? Because: 1. President Granger (Yes, he is still President) messed with the Commission by illegally appointing a Chairman which resulted in a highly

questionable attempt at a new national registration which, though stopped by the Chairman, is yet to be reconciled with the National Register of Registrants (NRR).

2. The Commission’s PRO persists in issuing Press Releases which subsequently have to be contradicted and then corrected by statements from the Chairman, leading to public confusion and an erosion of public confidence in our Elections Commission.

3. While the Leader of the PNC/R, in his capacity as President, continues to place unqualified faith in the integrity, competence and readiness of GECOM to conduct the elections, the Leader of the PPP/C does not.

All of us, therefore, have reason to be more than ordi-

narily concerned about both the competence and the integrity of GECOM to conduct the forthcoming elections.

It seems to me that there is a serious need for national reassurance that our General and Regional Elections will, in fact, be free and fair.

What we do not need, going in to these elections, are any grounds for the losing Party rejecting the results and protesting in the streets.

The Chairman and CEO of GECOM have a responsibility to reach beyond the task of conducting a competent, free and fair election, they have a responsibility to convince the country that they have both the will and the ability to do exactly that.

Moreover, please permit me the opportunity to say a special thanks to Mr. Ramroop for affording me the opportunity to witness all the games by providing me with VVIP tickets. You are a gem of a human being. May the almighty continue to bless you with long life and wealth to continue providing extraordinary entertainment for us even though sometimes it is at your own cost.

games were entertaining and the crowd support was electrifying.

The general conduct of the fans was excellent, the work of the traffic officers before and after the games was commendable. However, there are two things that were evident and needs to be corrected for future activities.

First, after the games or any other event, the management of the stadium should ensure that all the bottles, boxes, garbage and other form of disposables be removed from the compound.

In plain sight, garbage was evident at the entrance of the gate leading into the VVIP section, heaps of bottles, boxes, bags, etc.; were seen throughout the duration of the games. I find it hard to believe that the officials in charge of the stadium overlooked that important entrance.

I am surprised that this activity is going on for so long and there is no active police presence between Princess Hotel and the Harbour Bridge to protect the supports of the event despite several reports and complaints to the Guyana Police Force.

On many early mornings after a social event at the Providence Stadium, myself and other worshipers from the neighbouring Masjids have had to assist young girls who are left stranded without passage, telephone calls or had to transport them to their destinations.

It is my hope that the relevant authorities can look into these matters and take corrective measures in good faith.

DEAR EDITOR, During the PPPC’s era, I’ve penned numerous letters about my disapproval of things happening in Guyana.

With full support behind the coalition, I even encourage everyone I knew to give them a chance only to be rewarded with disappointment from them immediately after the last general election. Without giving them a chance, I penned my views and was verbally chastised by a former colleague but I stood my ground with my views and today I am witness to many others like me coming out to speak up boldly. In a nutshell, I see an administration that is selfish, vindictive against those who oppose their actions, a dictatorial regime with no vision for fellow Guyanese but themselves. For the past four years, despite what they are doing, only the negatives are being seen by Guyanese and rightfully so, because what they did are tinted with the accusation of corruption and we are now witnessing the inferior works. Having said that, nothing has been done worthy of praising that Guyanese would be able to benefit from.

Only members of the coalition are financially gaining and Guyanese are being brainwashed with the promises about the benefits of oil, even though, based on revelations, there’s nothing tangible for Guyanese, coming out of the contractual agreement. In other words, we’re being oiled for nothing!Editor, there are many things happening in Guyana and this administration only seems to be dedicating their energies towards meeting and convincing people to vote or help work

with them to convince people to give them another chance, apart from traveling and eating lavishly at the expense of the taxpayers, instead of addressing these issues. For instance, recently the minibuses decided to increase their fares tremendously, even though this Government increased taxes everywhere.

After much rambling, the increase was approved. Fare structures were printed and on display on most minibuses and the minibus association came out with a glorious plan to revamp the industry. To date, nothing has materialized.

Passengers are still forced to sit four in a seat; passing the police the bus is allowed to continue its journey with the police consent. Instead of working in an orderly manner, minibuses operators are fighting down one another to load first, operators are untidy, vulgar and abusive to passengers. The minibuses are in deplorable conditions, especially the seats. Loud music is still tormenting passengers, while reckless driving is scaring the skin off of people. So what is the increase for? The government approves the increase because it was promised/agreed and if this government was responsible enough, it should have been monitoring the situation and if the conditions are not met, then reduce the fare structures, because that was the purpose of the increase.

Finally Editor, immediately after the increase was approve, these operators along with the minibus association put on a show to impress commuters which didn’t even last a month and they have gone back to basic. Many,

From/to Vreed-enHoop and Uitvlugt, the fare is $140, according to the printed fare structures, but the vultures under the guise of operators are charging $160 and are telling you that is the fare.

Traversing to/from Diamond New Scheme, they are charging $180/200 dollars instead of $140/160, etc. This is happening in almost all the routes and from all indication, the minibus association are in cahoots with them because I cannot understand how all the routes will take their fare structures down around the same time and illegally increase their fares at the same time. What is being done to protect the rights of citizens?

This government is busy trying to brainwash Guyanese with oil, while they are not doing anything that could make us enjoy “A Good Life”. They should not be given another chance, because they do not have Guyana’s interest at heart, despite saying so. The whole world is seeing the extreme they are going to in order to remain in power. There are many more issues that are being ignored which I will be penning about later.

THE PPP/C TRANSFORMED REGION #10 DEAR EDITOR, Amidst recognition of the necessity for continued improvements, there is much evidence to confirm a transformation of Region 10 took place under the PPPC Government, from the sad deteriorated state it had become under the PNC leading up to 1992. Once one of Guyana’s most thriving regions and economic drivers for its bauxite production, a gradual degradation took place over decades of PNC mismanagement of this key industry; and their role in stifling developmental opportunities while in control of the Region for over 50 years.

The PPP/C inherited Region 10 as in most of the country, as failed region devoid of economic viability, so much that former President Hugh Desmond Hoyte had signalled his intentions to sell the State-controlled bauxite industry and its appendages as scrap. Many Lindeners and citizens residing in the Region were to move to other regions or become collateral damage, as there was no financial support to advance the alternative diversification into Agriculture. There was loss of jobs and massive retrenchments taking place; together with attenuating social, education and health standards, which the PNC dignified with continued false promises to residents.

It was a time of one of the greatest threats to the citizens and test of the incoming government who took decisions to subsidize and re-engineer the industry in the interest of thousands of residing residents and the Country at large. Incrementally over the years, the PPPC Administration transformed Region 10 into a Region where our people standard of living

developed many folds and a bright future was in the making.

Although one would argue and many believe that the PPPC should have done much more, it is of note that the Administration took over the country, with no money in the treasury and was highly indebted with over 94% of revenue had to service the debt created by the PNC Administration. There were also many accompanying setbacks, which they had to manage, but the PPPC did so in improving the standard of living in Region 10 over the period. I take this opportunity to highlight some of the developments that took place under the PPP/C during the period 1993 to 2015.

HEALTH:In the health sector, the PPP/C built and rehabilitated several hospitals, Health Centers and Huts across the region in an effort to complement the access of citizens to medical care. Standout achievements in this respect include: 1. A new ($1.8 billion) State-of-the-Art Hospital at Mc Kenzie, replacing the old hospital built by DEMBA. 2. A New Hospital at Ituni 3. Complete rehabilitation of the Kwakwani Hospital (formerly built by (Reynolds).

4. Built several new Health Centers in the Berbice and Demerara River.

5.Built Health ‘Huts” all over the interior areas of the Regions in the interest of our Amerindians brothers and sisters were delighted with the development of health facilities in their communities.

6. Provided sustained supported opportunities for our young people to study medicine and gain employment as nurses and health aids for which many are in-

deed thankful.

EDUCATION: In 1992, almost all our schools in our country were in a dilapidated state with leaking roofs, broken windows, and unsafe steps and floors. The PPP/C advanced the development interest of youths and citizens in Region 10 by building, rehabilitating and supporting several educational intuitions including: Building: 1. A New State-of-the-Art Linden Foundation Secondary School, which is comparatively the best resource-wise, in the Caribbean.

2.New Secondary schools at Wisroc ($350 Million); One Mile; Kwakwani along with a State-of-the-Art Student Dormitory.

3.New Primary schools at Watooka (formerly built by DEMBA; the New St. Aidan’s Primary school; at Mackenzie; Ituni; Coomacka, Muritaro, Malali, Great Falls, 47 and 58 Miles, Rockstone and Anarika and at River View.

Rehabilitating and or expanding: 4. The Mackenzie High School, 5. The Wisburg Multilateral Secondary School.

6. Most other schools in the Region. Today, most of the schools need repairs and the APNU/AFC is not doing much to maintain the schools.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION INFORMATION:The PPP/C built the firstever Call Center in Linden at which over 100 young people from the region gained employment. It is very sad that the jealous APNU/AFC closed this center down in 2015.

ROADS:In an effort to address some of the dust issues and development requirements in the Linden community, the PPP/C resurfaced several roads; and asphalt-covered the Burnham Drive public road right down to the Christianburg Burial Ground while also constructing a vehicle parking area. In addition, the new Winifred Gaskin Highway was constructed and built a brand new road through Canvas City. The PPP/C also over the years expended millions of dollars on into community roads net-

work and continued to maintain the Linden to Kwakwani roadway over the period.

HOUSING:The nation has witnessed the massive housing drive at Amelia’s ward phases 1, 2 and 3; at Block #22 Wismar, and at other areas in the region, where over 2500 house lots were developed and issued with massive road networks.

The development approach addressed much of the Housing needs of the region and remains incomparable to any initiative of housing ownership and distribution of house lots to the residents under the PNC Administration or any other period in the history of region 10. Complementing this massive housing drive was the construction of: 1. A brand new Fire Station at Mackenzie.

2. A brand new Court House at Wismar.

3. Two new Police outposts at Amelia’s Ward and Wisroc.

4. * Rehabilitation of the Charles Roza Training Center 5. *Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Technical Training Complex.

WATER:Built two new Water Treatment Plants – ($1.7 billion) at Wisroc & Amelia’s Ward.

BAUXITE MINING:In 1992, PPP/C inherited an agreement entered into between the departed PNC Administration and the multilateral financial institutions (MFIS) which funded and placed an International Mining Company (MINPROC) to manage The Linden Bauxite Company (LINMINE).

MINPROC’s purpose was to determine and demonstrate whether Linmine could be profitable, and if not, the company would have been closed by the then PNC Administration. Although MINPROC declared that it could not see way to make the then operations profitable, the PPP/C did not close the industry because of the unthinkable hardships that would have overwhelmed the citizens. Instead, they injected over US$5m every year to keep the Company in operation until a partner in OMAI was brought on board to invest and manage operations, providing jobs for hundreds of persons in the region.

Other investors were encouraged to come including BOSAI who is still here keeping the operations going.

With the privatization of LINMINE, the PPP/C Government had find G$2.5 Billion Dollars to pay off the workers. It may be recalled that during the downside in the Bauxite workforce, the PPPC had introduced the LEAP programme providing over G$700 Million in loans for alternative projects, to persons in the Region.

Other projects done under the LEAP programme included the building of the Benjamin Center, Rehabilitation of the Mackenzie car park, enhancement of the greater Mackenzie waterfront, and many more. When an assessment of the per capita investment by the PPPC Government in Linden, it would have resulted in more money spent in this highly populated PNC supported region area than in

any PPP populated area in Guyana.

Further, the PPP/C Government employed 400 community D&I workers from the region to work 4 days at 4hour/ week to maintain their community.

ELECTRICITY:Over $22 Billion were spent in electricity subsides in Linden/Ituni and about $800 million in Kwakwani, over the period. In addition, the PPPC installed solar electricity in the entire Amerindian villages in Region 10.

AGRICULTURE:The PPPC spent over $200 million on the agriculture roadway at West Watooka and Moblissa. Further, a total of over $3.2 billion was allocated to the Regional Democratic Council for capital projects over the period, which was spent on small projects such as the health centres and the rehabilitation of bridges, etc. The PPP/C also introduced the Women of worth (WOW) project. The PPPC developed this programme to help single parents in 2013 and over 44 loans were issued. The foregoing brings into perspective some of the interventions made under the PPPC and although there are many who have attempted to underscore these programmes, they represent factual positions that the naysayers should not attempt to discredit.

Previous PPPC governments did not leave Region 10 behind and the massive developmental programmes will continue under a newly elected PPPC administration.

When an illegal entity vainly tries to become legal DEAR EDITOR, The PNC Led Coalition is vainly trying to regain a legal status in this country and they are doing this in the most despicable of ways, that is, trying to coerce The Opposition to attend parliament to do so. They would like The PPP/ C to go to parliament, to, in its truest sense grant them the recognition they so much crave at this time, that they are still “the government.”

Well, if this is not the actions

of a bully then tell me what is? When this government has broken every law every constitutional mandate, can now turn again and ask The Opposition to legitimize their illegal standing before the people. This is an unforgivable situation in our Guyanese experience, the root cause for all of this being The PNC, led by its Attorney General Basil Williams.

Instead of pointing the accusing finger at himself, the ever cunning and slippery Basil Williams is putting the blame squarely at the feet of The PPP/C. As he claims The Opposition is the sure cause for this gridlock we have found ourselves.

But he is ever so wrong, why didn’t he and his party respect the rulings of the court, or why didn’t he and his government adhere to the dictates of the constitution?

All civilized states are gov-

erned by laws and Guyana is no exception?

For the smooth running of the ship of state, all laws must be upheld, there is no second guessing in this scheme of things. In this regard The PNC is guilty many times over and for this they must bear full responsibility for their actions.

As a statement of fact the opposition has said “We are not going back to parliament,” it is a clarion call, clear and definitive as could be, end of discussion! Why should they legitimize an illegal entity, the government has expired and so did its parliament!

The PNC are now squatters, illegals since midnight September 18th 2019, and no amount of cajoling or “bully talk” can change that. “The truth is, the life of The Eleventh Parliament of Guyana expired when The Government expired.”

Toshaos Conference becomes battleground for political parties A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU/AFC) coalition government and opposition, the Peoples Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) have once again found themselves facing each other on the proverbial battleground.

This fresh clash follows after the National Toshaos Council (NTC) launched their 13th annual conference, where village Toshaos, senior councillors and community development chairpersons gather to consolidate and expand national development, which would inevitably cater to the needs of the indigenous people.

Considering that the country has now found itself in the atmosphere of elections, it is now up to the Government of Guyana and the Political Opposition to win the likings and votes of the first people of the land.

The parties are now tasked with revealing what strides have been completed in the favours of the Amerindian people, and future projects and policies with the people in mind.

At the conference yesterday, which was hosted at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), President David Granger stated that the country is moving towards a more inclusive and equal society and this means that hinterland human development is imperative, especially in the fields of education, health livelihood and social protection.

“Hinterland human development over the past four years has improved efficiently. Indigenous People are enjoying better access to public education, public health, public information, public infrastructure, public security, public telecommunications and social security.

Your government has invested $170 billion in public education over the past four years and a further $52 billion committed for 2019. Hinterland education gained a good share of these investments and is being improved continuously through the establishment of learning re-

The Decade of Development 2020-2029 will be launched next year 2020 and the President said that the Decade aims at promoting a more equal society in which everyone would feel a sense of belonging and share in national development.

The Decade of Development aims at eliminating hunger; ensuring food security, safe water and hygiene; enabling everyone to access universal primary and secondary education and expanding technical and vocational training opportunities for indigenous peoples.

The President related, “I have identified five targets which are achievable and which would improve substantively the quality of life of indigenous peoples by 2029. I believe that these are realistic goals which can be achieved within the next Decade.

I urge this National Toshaos Council Conference 2019 to endorse these five fields of action for inclusion in the objectives of the Decade of Development 2020-2029.”

Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, Mr. Sydney Allicock, at the conference, reiterated the governments commitment to ensuring the Indigenous lands and other rights are protected.

During his address, he noted that the administration provided a plot of land to the NTC to construct a Secretariat to conduct its affairs. He also reminded that the President promised a larger plot of land for the establishment of a

complex that will include dormitories to accommodate Toshaos, conference rooms and other facilities.

Meanwhile, the PPP/C in a statement assured the Amerindian communities that it will restore, resume and expand the programmes “which the caretaker Granger-led government dismantled” - and, to improve the quality of life of the Amerindian communities, enhance their access to goods, services and opportunities as other Guyanese, and integrate their communities into mainstream Guyana.

“As part of the first initiative of the PPP/C, we shall convene a national development confer-

ence inApril 2020 forAmerindian communities to initiate the “Resumption of Development” of these communities,” they stated.

Furthermore, PPP/C revealed plans for Amerindian Communities and Hinterland Development. These plans included immediately resume the Amerindian Land Titling programme, improving agricultural support, Remove VAT on air tickets and freight, VAT on essential items; restore zero-rated VAT for machinery for agriculture, mining and forestry industries will also develop Amerindian and Hinterland communities, just to name a few.

The statement read, “The PPP re-commits to all the Toshaos, community leaders and representatives attending this 2019 NTC Conference to uphold the Guyana constitution, guard democracy and the rights of all Guyanese as equals to enjoy all the resources and opportunities Guyana has to offer.

Only compliance with the Constitution, rule of law, free and fair elections with a PPP/ C government can restore the quality of life of our first peoples, open opportunities and equal access to goods, services and opportunities for advancement.”

Residents, vendors clash with businessman ‌after he attempts to erect fence across street

The street which the businessman attempted to fence on Sunday In an ongoing situation on the West Demerara, residents and vendors have clashed with a businessman after he attempted on Sunday to erect a fence on an access road.

The access road is located north of the Vreed-en-Hoop junction, and leads to a secondary school and several homes lining the seawall area.

The road is the main

entrance.

According to Godfrey Bess, a businessman, he did indeed attempted on Sunday to place a fence on his property.

He tendered copies of what he said were court documents which give him control of the lands, including the access road.

However, residents and vendors who have been operating there for years, said

the courts have erred and in any case, for the sake of public good, it is impossible for someone to own a road.

The Regional Democratic Council of Region Three said it is looking into the matter at the moment.

In the interest of justice There is a worrying trend in our High Court over the past few years. A number of persons charged with murder have been pleading guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, thereby avoiding a more severe penalty on sentencing.

Last week, a suspect charged with the murder of a Mahaicony businesswoman pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. On the same day, two men originally charged with the

murders of two elderly women, pleaded guilty to the less counts of manslaughter.

Another man charged with the murder of his mother- inlaw and step daughter pleaded guilty to manslaughter instead.

During the June assizes, a man who was charged with the murder of his wife, pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. And in the same assizes, youths charged with the murder of a university professor did the

same thing.

A person charged with an offence of murder cannot plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter without the consent of the state prosecutors. Therefore, in all the aforesaid cases and in other cases, the prosecutors would have had to consent to the guilty plea of the lesser count.

There is nothing improper about this practice. It is acceptable in common law for someone to plead not guilty

Jealous man awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to hacking wife to death A 44-year-old man has been further remanded to prison where he is now awaiting sentencing for manslaughter. The man, Athlone Pitt, called Buddy confessed to Justice Jo Ann Barlow yesterday that he unlawfully killed his wife on June 01, 2016, when he pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge. He will be brought back to court on Wednesday, October 23 for sentencing.

to the offence in their indictment but guilty to a lesser charge not in their indictment. But while this practice is legal, it is not always in the interest of justice.

What about the relatives of the victims? Do they have a say? Do they feel that justice has been served by the State accepting a lesser count of manslaughter? Is justice served when someone is able to escape a more severe penalty through pleading to a lesser charge?

I know how I would feel if someone murdered one of my relatives and when the matter went to court, a lesser plea was accepted. I would not be pleased. I do not know about you or about how the relatives of victims would feel in such instance.

The prosecutors should consult with the families of victims or should discuss with basis for accepting a lesser plea. They should consider whether their acceptance of the lesser plea would be acceptable to the victims relatives. It is for the prosecutors to explain to the families the circumstances justifying accepting a lesser count.

There may be good cause for accepting a plea for a reduce count. In some cases, the evidence for murder may be weak. Because of the length of time it takes to bring suspects to trial, witnesses may have died or no longer be in the jurisdiction. The prosecutors may feel that is risky going to trial in such circumstances.

Dana Seetahal, who was a legal lecturer and attorney in Trinidad and Tobago before her murder five years ago, always taught her students that if the prosecution refuses to accept a plea for manslaughter and the trial goes ahead and the jury finds the person not guilty, the jury would not be asked to pronounce on the lesser count. This is a risk which some prosecutors are not willing to take in some cases.

They would, in those cases, opt for the lesser count. This is also a consideration Guyanas courts have a backlog of cases. Accepting lesser guilty pleas may help to avoid lengthy trials and ensure that more suspects have their day in court during each assizes. But this should never be a factor influencing the acceptance of a lesser

plea. It is not acceptable to trade justice for expediency.

Avoiding a long trial should never be a basis for accepting a lesser charge of manslaughter for persons charged with murder. The key factor has to be the interests of justice.

I can only speak for myself. I would rather someone charged for murder be freed of the charge rather than accepting a lesser count. I am not in favor of accepting the lesser count of manslaughter in murder cases.

But that is my opinion.

This practice of persons pleading guilty to lesser counts is not a new development but it is taking place with great regularity in our courts in recent times. The Director of Public Prosecutions need to issue some statement explaining the frequency with which persons charged with murder are now pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Ramjattan tekking nuff jumbie lashes After reading what Khemraj Ramjattan said last Monday about the possibility and probability of becoming the APNU+AFC’s prime ministerial candidate, I concluded that the issue was settled. That conclusion would have been reached by any person based on the strong, self-confident words of Ramjattan. I quote from my column; “Has Ramjattan finally defeated Nagamootoo?” of Wednesday, October 4, 2019; “ A high profile leader in government cannot at the commonsensical level speak so reassuringly of an offer that he will receive without having any knowledge at all

that he is likely to have it. The damage to his credibility will be permanent if he is rejected.

My interpretation is that based on how Ramjattan spoke to the reporters, he has been accepted by the PNC as Granger’s running mate.”

The way Ramjattan expressed himself when speaking on the subject to reporters was clear that there was acceptance of him from the PNC. I knew the PNC had deep and extensive reservations about his PM candidacy but after reading what he said last Monday I thought the controversy was over. It is not. So why did Ramjattan open his mouth?

Two new factors are now

The dye has now been cast. Williams’ outline is that the president selects his running mate. He told reporters it is the remit of the president to choose the prime ministerial candidate. Here are the words of Williams; “We will be undermining President Granger who has the remit to make such an appointment” If Williams is correct then the PM slot cannot be an item for discussion in the ongoing dialogue between APNU and AFC to revamp the Accord.

Prior to Williams’ explicit explanation, it was Granger himself who subtly hinted that the AFC will be unable to select the PM. He stated that the contents of the Cummingburg Accord must accord with what the constitution requires. In other words, when the Accord is revamped it cannot include forms of decision-making that are not in adherence with the constitution.

Maybe a hypothetical example should clarify the situation. If the constitution says the governor of Region 1 must be appointed by the CARICOM Secretariat, then no amount of

negotiations between the APNU and AFC will yield any fruits if the AFC has a person in mind to be the governor. The APNU will tell the AFC it cannot accept its request because it conflicts with the constitution. If the constitution empowers the president to select a prime minister then it is senseless to have the PM slot on the agenda in the current dialogue to revamp the Cummingsburg Accord. If President Granger has the constitutional authority to pick his prime minister then for the AFC to identify a PM candidate, it is tantamount to derecognizing the president’s jurisdictions. I get the distinct impression that both Granger and Williams are making this point a contention.

Granger and Williams have dealt some big jumbie lashes to Ramjattan who opened his mouth last Monday and boasted that in all probability he will be named as the PM candidate. The dye has been cast – the president will choose who his running mate is.

But there is still hope for Ramjattan. Granger can pick him.

Will Granger select him? The answer is a reverberating no. There are compelling reasons why the PNC will not go with Ramjattan.

Frederick Kissoon But the reasons are equally potent as to why it will not go with even another AFC nominee except Nagamootoo who the PNC feels is no longer AFC material.

There are volcanic debates in the PNC war room, that in the event of a Granger victory but he retires before 2025, if the AGC does not do a Sam Hinds in Guyana, then a small party that maybe didn’t even get three seats in the 2020 election, gets its man to become president. Sam Hinds agreed to vacate the presidency because he accepted the principle that the non-elected civic component should not have the presidency. The AFC needs to stop its self-fooling masquerade.

Woman ambushed, robbed in Peter's Hall attack

P

olice on the East Bank of Demerara are investigating a brazen daytime robbery that occurred at Peter's Hall 'Back Street.

The robbery which occurred Saturday afternoon around 13:45hrs left a family of three traumatized in the process. However no one was seriously injured.

It occurred in the vicinity of Sultan's Variety Store, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Kaieteur New understands that, last Saturday afternoon, owner of the variety store, Roy Sultan along with his wife and 14-year-old daughter were victims of a robbery after three men armed with handguns exited a fully tinted silver Toyota Premio car and demanded that the family hand over their valuables.

Fearful for their lives the trio handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry to the bandits who made good their escape in the waiting car. The matter has since been reported to the Providence Police Station. However, no arrest was made.

Video footage from a CCTV camera in the area shows the gunmen approaching the woman who was walking towards the store. The robber then pointed a handgun at the woman and then takes away her handbag.

Further in the video shows another robber exiting the getaway vehicle and then approaches the woman's car where her husband and child were still inside. They were also

robbed .After committing the dreadful act the gunmen then left the scene.

In an interview, owner of the store, Roy Sultan told Kaieteur News that it is his belief that the gunmen were trailing his car because the first stop he made was to a bank and then a restaurant.

Upon leaving the restaurant he then proceeded home.

“Dem man had to be following we… because we make nuff stops before going back to the store and soon as I stop the car in front of the store these men exit a car and rushed at my wife. After I see that happened I told my daughter to stay in the car with me but then dem man come up to my car and put a gun to my child head and demand cash from us,” Sultan recalled.

Sultan suspects that the gunmen were brazen in their attack because of the lack of law enforcers and patrol vehicles in the community.

“Peter's Hall was a nice place to live, but not now… every other day you getting reports of persons being rob in this place and this need to be stopped but in order for this problem to be stopped we need the police intervention.”

When contacted, a Police Officer stationed at the Providence Police Station told this publication that the car that was involved in the robbery is also suspected to be attached to a recent robbery that occurred a few villages away.

onfessing his undying love for his 76-year-old mother, Cecelia Madray, Te r r e n c e M a d r a y w a s yesterday sentenced to 21 years' imprisonment after he admitted to beating the elderly woman to death with a piece of wood on August 21, 2016 at their Good Faith, Mahaicony home.

Madray, now 53, who was initially, indicted for murder, opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter during his appearance before Justice Jo Ann Barlow at the High Court in Demerara.

According to State Prosecutor, Sarah Martin, on April 18, 2016, Terrence Madray called 'Throw Back' was heard by neighbours cursing out his elderly mother using a series of expletives.

Soon after, Prosecutor Martin said, someone heard a trampling sound coming from their home and soon after heard the pensioner groaning.

Community Policing ranks were summoned to the home where they called out for the elderly woman but were told by her son that she was asleep.

The woman was discovered lying on her blood-covered floor with a wound on her head by members of the area's Community Policing Group (CPG) on April 21, 2016.

The prosecutor in relating the facts of the case, said that Terrence Madray confessed to police that he lashed his mother in her head with a piece of wood and she fainted.

The prosecutor related that the man further confessed that he made attempts to revive his mother by giving her a bath and some food, which she did not eat.

The woman's cause of death, according to the Prosecutor, was given as blunt trauma. During a plea in m i t i g a t i o n , Te r r e n c e Madray's lawyer, Mark Conway pleaded with the court to be lenient with sentencing.

Conway said that although the killing was a senseless one, his client has shown remorse.

In fact, the lawyer highlighted that after beating his mother, Terrence Madray m a d e attempts to revive her.

Conway, nevertheless, said that his client is throwing himself at the mercy of the court by pleading guilty to the lesser offence and has chosen

not to waste the court's time of conducting a trial. The lawyer added that his client has been frequently attending church service during his incarceration.

Asked by Justice Barlow if he had anything to say, a crying Terrence Madray replied: “I really love my mother.”

He described the beating as a “little incident” and said that he was sorry for what happened.

According to him, he was under the influence of alcohol. But Justice Barlow told him that whether drunk or sober, one has to be aware of what they are doing.

Thus, she told him that he cannot use drugs or alcohol as an excuse for killing someone.

The judge reminded the confessed killer that apart from being bedridden, his mother was left in his care.

In imposing a sentence on Terrence Madray the judge started at a tariff of 26 years; she however deducted five years for the favourable mitigating factors which brings his total sentence to 21 years.

The judge, however, ordered that the prison authorities are to deduct from that amount the time the killer spent in pretrial custody.

uyana's offshore basin holds over six billion barrels of oil. This impressive find which follows from extensive exploratory work by ExxonMobil is expected to place the nation shoulder to shoulder with some of the world's biggest producers.

But for how long will this last?

To answer this question, there are two areas Trinidadian geologist, Anthony Paul states one must look at—Geology and Policy.

Speaking to the former, Paul explained that Guyana's basin features Cretaceous and Tertiary plays. Cretaceous sands were formed over 65 million years ago and in very deep waters. The Tertiary in comparison, was formed more recently, and is therefore quite young. Also, for the Cretaceous sands, these are very clean and permeable or porous therefore allowing it to be drained faster than the Tertiary which has less porosity.

In simpler terms, Paul said, “Think of it as having two buckets filled with

marbles and water. One has 200 marbles, the other has 3000, smaller ones. It will be much easier for you to drain the bucket with 200 marbles with a straw, because there are fewer obstacles for it to move around and for the water to cling to. This is how porosity works with those rocks. The Cretaceous rock is the one with the 200 marbles while the Tertiary is the bucket with the 3000 smaller ones.”

Interestingly, 11 out of the 14 discoveries made by ExxonMobil thus far are in the Cretaceous play.

When compared to Trinidad and Tobago's basin, Paul told Kaieteur News that Guyana's is obviously more superior.

The Geologist said, “TT rocks are very fractured and that has pushed the oil all over the basin. Also, the reservoirs holding the oil are very small so when we have to drill 20 wells to drain a small surface area, Guyana would have to drill two or four which would drain it.”

He continued, “But the good and bad thing about the basin in Guyana is because it is so easy to produce; you can drain it very quickly so Guyana's oil industry, given the existing discoveries, could be done in less than 40

Paul added, “That said, w i t h e v o l v i n g technologies...smaller reservoirs that are today not economically viable, could become so and prolong the life of the fields, including deep water.”

Turning his attention to policy, Paul highlighted the fact that Guyana does not have a publicly stated policy for managing the pace of depletion by the operator. Guyana joins Caribbean-wide initiative to improve health and safety of travellers - Agencies meet to chart the way forward A

i m e d a t improving health and safety for foreigners is high on Guyana's agenda. As a result, t h e G u y a n a To u r i s m Authority (GTA), under the Ministry of Business, along with the Ministry of Public Health and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) met to chart the way forward for an on-going project.

The project is aimed at improving health and safety of locals and visitors, tourism resilience and reputation.

The meeting was hosted at the Roraima Duke Lodge, in Kingston.

This programme, which was launched in 2017, is about improving a country's capacity to provide costeffective, quality health, food safety, and environmental sanitation (HSE) solutions to the HSE threats impacting on sustainable tourism in the Caribbean.

This would be executed through real time early alert and response monitoring system for tourism based health issues, training and certification, HSE standards, and multi-sectoral regional and international partnerships.

Participating countries will now have an enhanced capacity to fight HSE threats.

This integrated multisectoral programme is the first Caribbean-wide and global effort of its kind, setting an international precedent for improving sustainable tourism.

Stakeholders emphasized that there is no better time than now, as new threats to health and travel in the region emerge and in this era of real time, instant i n f o r m a t i o n f l o w, f o r creating mechanisms for monitoring and responding to tourism health and safety

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud, stated that, “The programme today provides training for some hospitality workers, such as tour operators and facilities operators.

They are going through some of the standards they need, in terms of health and safety- food safety standards, but we are also piloting a new initiative where we would be partnering with the association to allow for easy notification if any health issues arise among tourists.”

The CMO went on to say that in the past, foreigners

who visited the country had only reported cases of illnesses to their health agencies, only after they would have exited the country.

“Maybe weeks or months after, then we hear about it through the media.

You know, that can have a devastating impact, especially if the country decides to impose travel restrictions or advisories,” he added.

Director of Surveillance, Disease Prevention and Control at CARPHA, Dr. Lisa Indar, related that, “We have something called a Caribbean Corporation in Health; it is a document that sets the health agenda. So for

instance, what are the health burdens for the region and then we implement by having specific programmes. So we have a health information unit, we would have a disease surveillance unit.

For that we would work with each member state to know what their issues are and then we set a plan in action—these are two years' plans of action where we w o r k t o w a r d s implementing.”

Indar emphasized that these health plans have to be aligned with global, national and regional practices.

“We don't have a specific number that says that 10 tourists came from the UK

got sick. This is why we have our tourism and health programme where we are trying to implement a system that captures illnesses very quickly. It is a real time system, it is electronic and wide based, if someone is sick, we are asking the facilities to report so that you would be able to pick up s o m e t h i n g q u i c k l y.

Hopefully as soon as that is implemented you would have better data,” Dr. Indar explained.

Furthermore, a workshop was hosted to teach regional guidelines, response and capacity building component, together with certification with food safety, training and sanitation.

The Director states that this would lead to Guyana becoming branded and recognized as a health care safer destination. “So it is really your marketing tool as a better tourism product,” she concluded.

3 survivors, 4 bodies later…

Pressure mounts for search to resume P

eople from the Croatian coastal town of Sibenik have launched a petition calling on the French authorities to continue the search for the missing crew members of the Bourbon Rhode, which sank on September 26 in the Atlantic, among whom is their fellow citizen, Croatian Captain Dino Miskic.

The petition, which now counts 35,000 signatures, came after the French Regional Operational Centre for Surveillance and Rescue, CROSS, last Friday said the search for the missing crew had been suspended. The number of signatures continues to grow.

The ship with its 14member crew sank near the French Caribbean island of Martinique. Search operations since September 26 by CROSS and the

French Navy found only three survivors, as well as four bodies. Seven other crew members are still missing.

After 110,000 square kilometres of the sea were searched, the operation was suspended because it was deemed unlikely that further searches would produce results.

All merchant ships passing through the area have been instructed to monitor and report any useful information.

Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has asked her French counterpart, Emanuel Macron, to ensure a review of the decision to suspend the search, as long as there is even a slim chance of finding other survivors.

The Ministry said it had been in constant contact with the French authorities, the search coordinators on Martinique, the Bourbon

Offshore company and Miskovic's family.

“The [Croatian] embassy in Paris also sent a diplomatic note to the French Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs related to the search for missing persons and asked for direct

communication on the progress of the search,” the Ministry wrote on Saturday, according to a report on the Balkaninsight.com website.

The Bourbon Rhode was on its way to Guyana to help offshore oil activities currently taking place.

rom all accounts it appears as if the Linden gang wars and killings are spilling over into the city of Georgetown.

Commander of 'A' Division, Assistant Commissioner, Marlon Chapman, yesterday disclosed that the recent attempted execution of a man at East La Penitence Public Road, is suspected to be an extension of the gang feud happening presently in Linden.

Sources have indicated that the man had moved to Georgetown to seek refuge, but apparently has been followed by his assailants.

It is said that the guntoting man in last Saturday's incident hails from Linden, while his two accomplices and car driver, are from Georgetown. The target was said to be shopping at the East La Penitence roadside when a group of men turned up in a black Toyota Premio car and attempted to kill him.

They had pursued the man, firing wild shots in the air as he sprinted away to evade the bullets. The intended victim reportedly returned fire and shot a John Lewis, 22, of East Ruimveldt on the left hand and abdomen, resulting in him being hospitalised under police guard at the Georgetown Hospital. The injured man was abandoned at the scene by his colleagues who escaped into theAlbouystown area.

Yesterday, the police issued a wanted bulletin for several men said to be connected to the murder and attempted murder committed on Ian Williams and Melita Antigua respectively on September 28, 2019 at Lover's Lane, South Amelia's Ward, Mackenzie, Linden.

Wanted by the police are Martin Fraser, Renard Caesar, Richard Caesar, Randy Billy, Sherwin Benjamin and Denzil Grant who are all wanted by the police for questioning in relation to the incident. Police said that anyone with information that may lead to the

lmost three days after he was brutally killed in his home during the course of a robbery, police are still unable to arrest anyone in relation to the murder of 53year-old Darrell Breedy. The incident occurred last Saturday around 03:30hrs.

In an invited comment 'A' Division Commander Marlon Chapman told Kaieteur News that the matter is still being investigated. He further added that police have not

yet been able to apprehend any suspects.

However, initial investigation into the matter revealed that there might have been more than one intruder in the Breedy's home on the fatal night.

Breedy reportedly came face to face with the intruders that gained entry into his home through a window at the bottom flat of his twostorey home.

It is believed that a scuffle then ensued between Breedy and the intruders. It

was during that scuffle that one of the intruders discharged a round hitting Breedy in his abdomen. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

After the shooting, it is believed that the intruders carted off a 32 inch flat screen television and $11,000 cash. The man, who was described as a very peaceful individual, leaves to mourn his wife and two children.

Drag race leaves one dead at De Kinderen

eroy Cummings, 25, of 125 Tuschen Housing Scheme East Bank Essequibo (EBE) is now dead after a reported car race ended tragically at around 12:30 hours Monday morning.

According to reports, the deceased along with his brother and another male were the occupants of a car, PVV 4886, when the driver lost control.

The vehicle toppled several times before slamming into a fence at De Kinderen Village, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

The occupants were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital. Cummings, who was in an unconscious state, was referred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The others who remained at the Leonora Cottage hospital were treated and sent away.

T h e Va t i c a n a l s o extended an invitation to Amazon regional experts from outside the Catholic Church, including Indigenous community representatives who traveled to Rome for the

occasion.

The plight of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon will also be highlighted at the assembly.

In his sermon, Pope Frances said some Church leaders risked becoming "bureaucrats, not shepherds" and urged them to be open to change.

"Fires that are motivated by destructive interests, like the one that recently devastated the Amazon, are not in line with the gospel," he said.

In a working document from June, bishops had called on the church to "join grassroots social m o v e m e n t s , t o prophetically announce an agenda of social justice ... organic agriculture and agro-forestry."

It outlined that "Mother Earth" must be defended from an "economic model of predatory and ecocidal development ... which kills and plunders, destroys and devastates, expels and discards."

While female members of the church are expected to attend, they still do not have voting rights. One of the proposals calls for the Catholic church to establish new "official ministries" for women, but event organizers objected to the proposal.

STRESS ON CLIMATE CHANGE Global attention is on the Vatican's ecological agenda, particularly in regards to environmental and economic exploitation of the Amazon.

Scientists have warned against rising global warming threats after massive fires ravaged through large parts of the Amazon rain forest.

Originally from Argentina, Pope Francis is

the first-ever Latin American pope and has made climate change and social justice crucial subjects of his papacy.

While the Pope received criticisms from conservative critics of his ecological agenda, Francis insists that his worries for the environment are in line with the church's teachings.

MALE LEADERS MAY HAVE 'EXISTING FAMILY' Also highlighted in the working document, the bishops proposed that older, respected members of Amazon communities should be allowed to be ordained "even if they have an existing and stable family."

Pope Francis has said he is open to the change, but only in applying it to the Amazon region. Some members from isolated Catholic communities in the Amazon have difficulties in attending Mass due to the shortage of priests.

Ordaining married men is seen as a potential solution.

The suggestion nevertheless sparked outrage among conservative Vatican clerics who do not welcome possible changes to the centuries-old Catholic tradition of a celibate priesthood.

Conservative critics have begun an opposition campaign, issuing petitions and organizing conferences to overthrow Francis's proposals which they have called "heretical" and a welcoming of a "pagan" religion that idolizes nature rather than God. The Pope can ultimately decide what changes, if any, will be made based on the recommendations that are put forth at the synod.

ugar workers have petitioned President David Granger for a pay increase.

This is according to a statement issued by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU). According to GAWU, approximately 3,500 sugar workers submitted a petition to President David Granger, to approve the increase.

According to the statement, this took place on October 2, 2019, as sugar workers engaged in the fields and factories of Albion, Blairmont and Uitvlugt Estates to seek the President and his Government to approve an increase in their wages.

The statement noted that the petition indicated that they have been working for the same rates-of-pay since

2015, although the cost of living has significantly risen in the ensuing period.

Factors including lessened crop weeks, restriction of certain benefit and suspension of other long-standing conditions-ofwork among other things have declined the earnings of the sugar workers, the statement claimed.

The workers lamented that the situation has gotten them and their families “between a rock and a hard place”.

The workers, through their petition, shared that they were of the view that the Government of Guyana, as the owner of the industry, had a responsibility to ensure that they benefit from adequate compensation to maintain their standard of living and thus avoiding impoverishment.

On this note, GAWU pointed out the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights at Article 23(3): “Everyone who works has the right to favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplement, if necessary, by other means of social protection”.

According to the statement, GAWU said, “Our country as a fullfledged member of the UN should take note of what the declaration says, recognising that it is considered one of the main documents of the organization.”

Worker who got 'cold feet' caught returning stolen amplifier

2 9 - y e a r- o l d porter was yesterday given community service after he pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny in which he stole an article from his employer's store.

It was alleged that the defendant, Rickford Atwell, stole one amplifier valued at $45,000 which is the property of Saied Amid, his employer, on October 2, last at the Regent Household and Electronics store located on Regent Street Georgetown.

At the time the charge was read, Atwell was arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates' Court before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss related the facts of the charge. The court heard that on the day in

question the business place was closed for the day and the regular checks of the workers' bags were being made.

The defendant was asked to have his bag checked, which he was taking to the back of the building at that time. After producing his bag it was searched and the stolen item was discovered.

The owners of the store summoned the police and, under caution, Atwell told police ranks he was taking the amplifier home to see if it was working. He was arrested and subsequently charged for the offence.

Atwell was given an opportunity to address the court after the facts was related. He stated that he was packing an area in the store when he came across the amplifier which he decided to put in his bag. However, when

the search was taking place, he changed his mind and decided to take back the item.

While going with his bag to take back the item he was caught.

The magistrate then asked him where he was taking the item and what he was going to do with it. The defendant failed to provide a proper answer and as he acknowledged what he did was wrong while saying by knowing this that was his reason for taking back the item.

Given that he was a first offender and the item was recovered, the magistrate sentenced Atwell to nine weeks of community service at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court. He is to also undergo six months of counselling. In default of these orders, Atwell will spend three weeks in prison.

In addition, GAWU said that it is also hopeful that the President will consider the workers cries knowing that they are supportive voices in the industry who have advocated that the workers be awarded an improvement in their pay.

DPP advice sought on tearing Agri-Ministry pushes for healthy living through GRAIN-H down of president's photo at NDC

file was prepared and has since been dispatched to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice on the matter involving the 52/74 NDC Chairman, Anil Ramgahan.

Ramgahan is accused of removing the images of the President and Prime Minister of Guyana from the NDC walls a few days ago. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor Lakram Singh had told Kaieteur News that he was informed by the Overseer of the NDC Ravindra Dass that Ramgahan went in to the council building and instructed him to remove the pictures from the wall, he said he refused. Singh further stated that the Overseer told him that Ramgahan took the pictures off himself and threw it on the ground.

However, Ramgahan who has since admitted to removing the pictures also denied placing the images on the ground.

He told this publication

that he placed them on the filing cabinet and left. A report was subsequently filed at the Whim Police Station by Lakram Singh and claimed it was damage to property.

Meanwhile, Kaieteur News has learnt from a detective close to the investigation that the Prime Minister Representative Gobin Harbhajan told the police that the Overseer told him that the pictures were removed by the overseer and placed on the ground but the Overseer on the other hand told police that Ramgahan removed the pictures and placed them on the filing cabinet as the NDC Chairman had initially said.

It is unclear who actually placed the images on the floor but a source at the NDC told this publication that the pictures were on the filing cabinet where Ramgahan said he left them. According to a police source there were no damages to the pictures and it has since been placed back on the wall after the Regional Executive Officer of Region Six Kim Williams-

he Ministry of Agriculture, through its recently launched Guyana Realigning Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health (GRAIN-H) programme, continues its objective to promote healthy living throughout Guyana.

According to a Department of Public Information report, the GRAIN-H project is a collaborative drive between the ministry and the Region 4's Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Health Department. It is aimed at ensuring that all Guyanese have access to harmless and nutritious food, and live a physical, psychosocial, and cultural health status.

Yesterday, Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, with responsibility for Rural Affairs, Valerie AdamsYearwood, delivered tools to every health centre within the Demerara-Mahaica domain.

To boost their kitchen gardens effort, the health outposts received forks, spades, hoes, pick-axes and cutlasses.

“As part of our concept note we will be handing over 34 of each of the items,” the minister stated during the first presentation to the Buxton Health Centre earlier.

Welcoming the ministry's donations, Chairman of Demerara-Mahaica Region, Genevieve Allen remarked, “we are heartened with this promise that has delivered and we look forward to the project

being fully implemented… I must congratulate the staff of the Buxton Health Centre.

This project was a brainchild coming out of their efforts… we are working towards a more nutritious and healthy people in Guyana,” stated Allen. Doctor-in-Charge and Family Medicine Specialist, Aneisha Moore-Throne, said: “I do trust that the gifts that would have been given to us by the Ministry of Agriculture, would be so used in a manner that would cause us to indeed look out and look forward to a more healthy Guyana.”

While the Buxton Health Centre is the first to receive aid for their kitchen garden, the delivery services continue daily to the other remaining health facilities.

GUYANA IS PREPARING Last year November, the Department of Energy told the media that it is doing some amount of work on the front of preparing Guyana for a booming and fully functional oil sector. Dr. Bynoe had indicated that the government

earmarked sums of money secured from the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to fun d p r o j e c t s f o r t h e strengthening and management of Guyana's nascent oil sector.

Dr. Bynoe had said that significant loans have already been agreed, and the government is in the process of agreeing on initiatives that will be targeted for next year.

The young man after hearing her reply informed her that the kitchen upstairs was on fire. “The only thing I could have done after he say that, was try to get he [her husband] out of the yard and I was hollering,” she tearfully recalled.

During the process of screaming to draw the attention of her neighbours she said that she kept trying to hurry up and get him out, not knowing where she got the strength, she pushed his chair out into the street and asked a neighbour to watch over him.

“After they hold him, I take this child and

come out too. I could not do anything.”

Even though the fire started from the kitchen she could not pinpoint what exactly caused it, since there were no appliances plugged in at the time and the kitchen utensils were all downstairs. She is still counting her losses and couldn't come up with a figure. All her appliances including three televisions, a laptop and a music set were lost in the fire.

“We didn't manage to save nothing, just what we have on,” she lamented.

The family are expecting to visit the Fire Service Headquarters today for updates.

US Bankruptcy court approves restructuring for Bristow Houston-based Bristow Group Inc. yesterday announced that on Friday, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas confirmed the company’s amended Plan of Reorganization and indicated that it will enter a written order to this effect.

The company expects to consummate its financial restructuring process and successfully emerged from Chapter 11 by October 31, 2019.

The company has operations in Guyana lending helicopter support to ExxonMobil as it continues to prepare for oil production in a few months’ time, according to GuruFocus.com.

Upon emergence as a privately held company, Bristow’s largest owners are expected to be affiliates of

Solus Alternative Asset Management LP, South Dakota Investment Council, Empyrean Capital Partners, LP, Bain Capital Credit and Oak Hill Advisors, who are expected to own in excess of 50% of Bristow’s equity collectively, with the remaining equity held by other secured creditors and unsecured note holders.

Under the terms of the approved Plan, at emergence the Company will receive $535 million of new capital from a majority of Bristow’s secured and unsecured note holders: (i) $385 million through an equity rights offering, and (ii) Bristow’s $150 million debtor-inpossession loan, which was funded in August 2019 and will convert into new equity of the reorganized Company at emergence.

Supenaam water front project stalled for months - already falling apart Over the past few months, works on the Supenaam waterfront project on the Essequibo Coast has haltedeven worse, sections of the project that were already completed are falling apart.

Kaieteur News understands that phase one of the multi-million dollar project commenced late last year, and was scheduled to conclude by the end of March 2019.

Chief River and Sea Defense Officer, Kevin Samad said that one key feature of phase one of the project, was the construction of a river defense which runs along the water front. According to information reaching this publication, that aspect of the projects phase one has been complete. Samad said that phase one will also include vending huts, along with five washroom facilities.

The Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, during a multi stakeholder meeting in the region earlier this year, said that phase one of the project wouldve been completed by the end of March 2019.

“Phase one is scheduled to

be completed by the end of this month [March]. When that is finish it will be a new water front development with new boat house, as well as parking and road way when we are finished,” said Patterson during the meeting last March.

When Kaieteur News visited the project site last Thursday, it was observed that there were a number of vending huts, which were yet to be completed, and the five toilet facilities are yet to be opened.

As for the boat landing, a number of ceramic tiles on the structures floor have already broken apart. There was no indication that the construction of a parking lot has commenced, nor the construction of a proper access road around the project.

One resident who spoke to this publication said that no work was done on the project over the past four months. Tax payers are concerned that the incomplete work may require additional expenditure in the long run, if works do not resume as soon as possible.

Man, who hid gun from police Man found with stolen fein crotch, awaiting sentence male underwear in pocket Twenty-eight-year-old Kevin Bruce who was found with a gun in his pants crotch at a police station was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared in court to answer to a possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Bruce called “Bankey” was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates Courts where he admitted to both charges.

The charges stated that on September 26, 2018, at East La Penitence Police Station he had in his possession one .32 Taurus pistol and 10 .32 live rounds of ammunition without being a licensed firearm holder.

The defendant, who is still recovering from a gunshot wound he sustained to his abdomen moments after the firearm was found in his pants crotch, offered to give an explanation to the court.

According to the facts of the charge presented by police prosecutor Quinn Harris, on the day in question ranks from the East La Penitence Police Station received information about an unknown male being in a yard where he doesnt belong.

When they arrived at East La Penitence Police Station and the defendant exited the vehicle and was heading to the inquiry office, a police officer observed him with his hands in front his crotch area. He then whipped out a hand gun.

The police officer in turn took out his service pistol and ordered Bruce to drop his gun. The defendant refused to comply and in fear for his life the officer discharged a round that hit the defendant in his abdomen.

An ambulance was then called in and the defendant was rushed to the hospital while under police supervision.

However, the defendant admitted that having a firearm without being a licensed firearm holder is wrong and mentioned that the gun does not belong to him but it was given to him to protect the house.

He further stated that when he was shot by the police officer he was about to give them the gun since they didnt find it on him when the first search was conducted.

Principal Magistrate Marcus remanded the defendant to prison and his sentencing was deferred to October 14, 2019.

According to the police, a father of three who was caught red-handed with stolen articles was yesterday remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.

Yudhister Samjawan pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates Courts.

It was alleged that on October 4, 2019, at West Ruimveldt Georgetown, Samjawan broke and entered the dwelling home of Yanti Stephens and stole one Samsung cellphone valued at $35,000, a female underwear valued $400 and $50,000 cash.

The defendant who was not represented by an attorney, told the court that he is 26-years-old who resides at 58 Third Street Alexander Village.

He added that he works at the fishery and is also a taxidriver.

Police prosecutor, Adduni

Yudhister Samjawan Innis, objected to bail for the defendant based on the fact that he was found in a trench by neighbours who summoned the police.

Upon arrival, the police searched the defendant and found him with the female un-

dergarment in his right side pants pocket.

Prosecutor Innis also added that the victim positively identified the defendant, as she saw him crawling out of her house.

She further noted that the particulars about the defendant which he related to the court were not what he told the police when he was arrested.

On the other hand, the defendant stated that on the day in question he was drinking with friends in the area.

Suddenly persons came running towards him pushing him in the trench. He added that it was the people who placed the underwear in his pocket.

After listening to both sides, the magistrate upheld the submission of the prosecutor and refused bail for the defendant. She instructed him to make his next court appearance on October 21, 2019.

The three-day workshop, which is geared towards “at risk youths” in the Dutchspeaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country, is an activity of the Crime and Violence Project (CVP) component of the CARIFORUMEuropean Union Crime and Security Programme under its 10th European Development Fund. Similar programmes will be carried out in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

The Guyana-based CARIFORUM Secretariat said that the October 8-11

event in Suriname is part of the initiative to tackling crime and security and focuses on drug demand and supply reduction, crime prevention and social development, and capacity-building of law enforcement and security agencies. “The overall objective of the training is to create opportunities for atrisk youth, including incarcerated youth in CARIFORUM. Three more titles for USA, heroics by Mihambo, Cheruiyot and Cheptegei IAAF World Championships conclude IAAF - Three victories on the concluding day of the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 from 100m hurdler Nia Ali and the mens and womens 4x400m teams - bolstered the United States position at the top of the medal table, taking their count to 14 golds and 29 medals in total.

A 1500m performance of faultless determination by Timothy Cheruiyot confirmed Kenya in second position overall with five golds and 11 medals in all, with Jamaica finishing third with three golds and 12 medals, one place ahead of China, who collected three titles and nine medals in all.

Mihambo sails 7.30m - Germany were lifted to seventh place with what was arguably the finest individual performance of day 10 as Malaika Mihambo produced the best womens long jump of the year, and the 12th best ever 7.30m. She thus added world gold to the European gold she had earned on the home ground of Berlin the previous year.

Maryna BekhRomanchuk of Ukraine took silver medal, edging ahead of early leader Ese Brume of with a fifth round jump of 6.92, with the Nigerian taking bronze thanks to her second round effort of 6.91.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras The Honduran national soccer team will have a lineup mixed with experience and youth for the October matches in Group B of the Concacaf Nations League A against Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique.

Honduras will visit Trinidad & Tobago in Couva, San Fernando, on October 10 and receive Martinique at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula on the 13th of the same month.

BBCsport - Tacko Fall only stepped on to a basketball court seven years ago but the imposing 7ft 5in Senegalese is now hoping to become the tallest active player in the NBA. Two and a half inches shorter than retired Romanian player Gheorghe Mure an - the NBA’s tallest ever player - 23-year-old Fall is battling to make the Boston Celtics’ 15-man roster for the upcoming season after signing for the franchise in the summer.

The Celtics decided to move for Fall after he recorded the highest marks ever for wingspan (8ft 2.25in), standing reach (10ft 2.5in) and height with shoes (7ft 7in) at the NBA Draft Combine earlier this year.

Born in Dakar in 1995, Fall moved to the United States aged 16 - when he already stood at 7ft tall - and went on

to play college basketball for the University of Central Florida. His final game for the UCF Knights came against the Duke Blue Devils in a NCAA Tournament secondround clash, where he held his own against Zion Williamson, the New Orleans Pelicans star who was first pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. ”It’s a dream come true. I started basketball when I was 16, a bit late,” the centre told BBC Sport Africa’s Babacar Diarra.

“When I went to the US, I had many opportunities there. Many people helped me continue developing especially at the University of Central Florida.”

Fall admits he “wasn’t really aware of what basketball was” growing up, devoting his time instead to watching cartoons, but revealed that it was his grandma’s love for the sport

that brought it to his attention.

It soon became his focus after he arrived in America as a teenager, although his entrance into the sport was not without its challenges. “I didn’t know how to play. I had many things to learn. I was lucky, many people helped me, developed me,” he says. ”I was in Houston for a year.

Then I kind of made the rounds: I went to Tennessee, Georgia, then to Florida. I stayed there for two years in high school and then I went to UCF. “I worked so much to get this opportunity to play in the NBA. So right now, I am dreaming. ”Now, basketball is my life. If I don’t play for one day, it drives me crazy. “I feel blessed. I am just a little kid from Senegal, I barely started playing basketball six years ago. God truly blessed me.”

Britton wins 2019 TrinBago Shanghai Masters: Andy Murray beats Juan Ignacio Londero mens open Table Tennis title Caribbean Mens Singles and Under-21 bronze medalist, Shemar Britton, won the 2019 edition of the Trinbago Open Mens Singles Table Tennis Championship.

The two-day competition which saw a large number of players entered commenced last Friday and concluded on Saturday night at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Rd, Tacarigua, Trinidad & Tobago.

Britton, who is pursuing studies in the Twin-Island Republic, defeated all his opponents in the group stage to advance to the round-of-64 where he defeated Wayne Oudit by a 3-0 score line to advance to the round-of-32.

He then made light work of Sean Michael with another 30 victory while in the last 16 he defeated Abraham Francis by a 3-1 margin.

In his quarterfinal match up, Britton eased past former Caribbean junior silver medalist Luco Young in three straight games to advance to the semifinals.

In the semifinal he had a minor hiccup but prevailed over multiple-time Caribbean med-

GDF march to successful title defence

By Sean Devers The curtains came down on the three-night Lennox Blackmoore National Intermediate Boxing Championships on Sunday night with defending Champions Guyana Defense Force (GDF) mounting a successful defence of their Best Gym Title.

The runner-up gym accolade was shared between Forgotten Youths Foundation (FYF) and Rosehall Jammers of Corentyne, Berbice.

Mark Crawford was adjudged Best Youth Boxer while 18-year-old Shermar Halley copped the Best Elite Boxer Award, both FYF boxers. The crowd was one of smallest in recent times even at a time when there is a general lack of spectator interest for Amateur Boxing with the handful of those watching including several members of Guyanas successful school boys team.

Lightweight Crawford began the last night with a victory over Jeffery Joseph of PRBG in the first final of the night dominated by bouts involving GDF fighters since they had the largest contingent of pugilists.

ond round saw Halley going more to body but fought at close range which seemed to suit Jackman since Halley rarely got the range to execute

powerful shots and was cautioned on a few occasions for not keeping his head up.

The final round saw the best of Halley who led with right jabs and followed up with some nice upper cuts to the mid-section and threw some good double japs to the head.

Jackman and Halley traded punches but Halley did enough to win the round and the Lightweight fight.

In other results Quincy Abrams beat fellow GDF Gym mate Azeemul Lewis in their Intermediate Flyweight contest while the Jackman siblings (Abiola and Alisha) went at each other in an exhibition bout after Abiolas opponent, Pauline Aaron from Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym (PRBG) was feeling unwell.

In the Welterweight final Cranston McAllister beat fellow GDF Orlando Grenville while in another all GDF bout Jermain Jones beat Lyndon Bennett in their Middleweight fight.

Daren France beat Osbert Robinson in a Heavyweight fight, another all GDF affair.

ICC Women’s Championship Rachael Haynes’ maiden century sets up Australia’s record-equaling victory ESPNcricinfo - A maiden international century from Rachael Haynes was the standout performance in Australia’s 110-run victory in the second ODI against Sri Lanka that put them 2-0 up in the series.

Haynes’ 118 off 132 balls formed the cornerstone of Australia’s 8 for 282 although that was a lower total than appeared likely for large parts of the innings, as Sri Lanka fought back at the death.

Haynes and Alyssa Healy added 116 in 19.3 overs for the first wicket after which Haynes put on 103 with Meg Lanning (45) but from 1 for 219 the last ten overs brought 6 for 63. Sri Lanka started the chase better than how they did in the opening game.

At 1 for 95 in the 23rd over, they had a glimmer of putting

some pressure on Australia, but on a slow pitch where it was difficult to force the pace they couldn’t keep up with the required rate. Jess Jonassen took 4 for 31 which included her 100th wicket in ODIs, the fourth Australian to reach that landmark, as Australia secured a record-equalling 17th ODI win on the bounce to match the mark set by Belinda Clark’s team from 1997 to 1999.

This win also gave them an unassailable lead in the Women’s Championship. On a surface being used for the second time in three days, Australia batted first and after some early caution were making strong progress through Healy and Haynes.

Haynes brought up her century off 120 balls with a cut for four, surpassing her previous highest international score of 98 which she made on Test debut in 2009. However, the last ten overs only brought three further boundaries - a six from Ashleigh Gardner and two fours by Beth Mooney - with Sri Lanka striking regularly.

When he eventually holed out against Shadab, Rajapaksa had six sixes and four fours to his name. He had also made a strong case for inclusion in the XI even when all the regular players are available.

In fact, this outfit has done so well in Pakistan, it’s difficult to tell which one the first-choice T20 side is. As had been the case on Saturday, several players made strong contributions towards the victory. Before Shanaka clubbed 27 off 15 to finish the innings, Jayasuriya had made 34 off 28.

With the ball, Kasun Rajitha’s tight first spell, in which he

claimed the wicket off Fakhar Zaman and conceded only five runs, was vital to keeping Pakistan quiet through the Powerplay. Too many Pakistan players were off their game. Mohammad Amir went at 10 runs an over, while Hasnain and Shadab were almost as expensive, thanks in part to the Rajapakse sixes. Umar Akmal then collected his second golden duck in a row, getting out lbw in that manic Hasaranga over, immediately after Shehzad had been bowled by a googly.

Babar Azam would often be leading Pakistan in tough chases, but even he has picked up two poor scores so far in the series.

GTTA National Schools Novices Championship set for this month end The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Ministry of Education (MOE) will stage the 2019 edition of the National Schools Novices, Elite Teams and Singles Table Tennis championships from October 25-27 next at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.

According to a release from the GTTA, the championships which attracted over 200 participants from thirty five (35) schools across Guyana last year are aimed at achieving key objectives inclusive of providing the opportunity for new talents to have an active platform to showcase and expose their talents and re-establishing schools championships as the basis for the GTTAs development thrust.

The following categories will be contested during the three-day championships: “ Open elite team (18 years & under) “ Open boys novices team (18 years & under) “ Open girls novices team (18 years & under) “ Open boys novices singles (18 years & under) “ Open girls novices singles (18 years & under) “ Open elite boys singles (18 years & under) “ Open elite girls Singles (18 years & under).

Schools are being urged to submit the names of their players and their confirmation slip by Thursday October 24th to ensure their participation in the tournament.

he fourth round of the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) Drag championship speeds off in less than two weeks (Sunday October 20) with some unfinished business to be settled amongst local rivals while Suriname are touted to be represented by a large contingent.

The Surinamese dragsters, who have been long time supporters of drag racing in Guyana, have missed the last couple meets due to the inactivity of the Guyana-Suriname Ferry Service but with resumption of the service, the Dutch speaking daredevils have confirmed to the GMR&SC that they will be invading the land of many waters for the 1320 Heat Rematch.

So far, six cars have been con-

firmed but the executive committee of the club noted that much more are expected since registrations usually come in closer to race day. There has been much chirping within local motor racing forums so the GMR&SC have confirmed that the 1320 Heat Rematch will see an entire hour being dedicated to callouts with some of the anticipated grudge matches being Imran Khan versus Pierre Singh, Team Mohameds GT-R Goliath versus Team Trans Pacific Alteeza and Team Mohameds GTR Godzilla versus Deryck Jaisinghs Supra.

DEL Ice Co. have sponsored cash prizes for the fastest 10second ($200,000), 11-second ($150,000) and 12-second ($100,000) cars while there will be $20,000 cash prizes each for the fastest reaction time and best burnout.

Fans and competitors are being urged to wear pink in observance of breast cancer awareness month. Admission to the venue will be $1000 for adults, $500 for children.

Guyana and West Indies batsman Rajendra Chandrika stated that he was delighted with his consistent performances in Canada. Chandrika, who represented West Indies in five Tests, featured for Vikings Cricket Club in the annual Toronto and District Cricket Association Super 9 50-over 2019 tournament.

Vikings eventually won the tournament humbling arch-rivals Centurions by six wickets at King City ground, Toronto, recently. Chandrika churned out a fine batting display as well by scoring an attractive 60 in the championship contest.

In the Super9 competition which began in May, Chandrika chalked up over 540 runs including a brilliant 110, his only century this year against Islanders Cricket Club. The 30-year-old Chandrika, who played 59 first-class matches also showed his batting talent for

Hawaiian Arctic Club in the Scarborough Cricket Association Premier League limitedover tournament.

Chandrika scored three fifties in six games for Arctic which was led by former Guyana and West Indies player, Royston Crandon.

According to Chandrika, who last represented the Caribbean team against India in 2016, he still wants to wear the prestigious colours again but once he continues to play competitive cricket and makes runs consistently he feels his chance will come about once more, sooner rather than later. ”I had a great time in Canada playing for both Vikings and Hawaiian Arctic; I enjoyed my game thoroughly and was glad to score some runs,” Chandrika mentioned.

Chandrika, who started plying his trade in Canada since 2013, declared that the Toronto Cricket is very com-

petitive and he would have also learnt a lot to keep improving his game in every department. ”Cricket in Canada has been very competitive especially when you have players from around the world playing here on a regular basis and also some of Canadas top national players on show, so definitely I will be back here next year,” Chandrika, who made his test debut against Australia at home in 2015, disclosed.He is now planning to return to his native Guyana to commence preparations for the upcoming Franchise cricket while he knows a good first-class season will see him back in the five-day version. ”I am confident of getting big scores in local cricket and then at the regional level; while I am planning to play professional cricket in Trinidad and Tobago very early next year as well,” an enthusiastic Chandrika said.
