Police shortcomings A 48-month sentence was recently meted out to a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for his involvement in a shooting incident. Now Adrian Bishop is shot in questionable circumstances, raising questions about the quality of guidance provided to frontline ranks by the police leadership. The GPF has been in existence for over 175 years, and when compared with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), that entity has not reached the level of institutional development and maturity that the latter has displayed during its 49 years. Incidentally, there is perception that the GDF is more welcoming of civilian expertise than the capacitychallenged GPF. This is perhaps symptomatic of inherent antagonisms in police-civilian relations which are hard to dissolve. Citizens hear about ranks acting in contravention of standard operational procedures, but nowhere up to this juncture is documentary evidence of clear guidelines governing ethical police behaviour provided. Maybe the time has come to equip the ranks with body and vehicle cameras. Blaming the frontline ranks for errors of judgment which are sometimes fatal seems to be the panacea. Also questionable is the police operational doctrine when one observes different approaches to public disorder incidents, depending on which sets of disgruntled persons are involved. Citizens may be forgiven for getting the impression that references to dictates of policy are only intended to soothe agitated minds. Can the premier law enforcement arm of the state point to policies similar to the GDF but formulated based upon the strategic administrative and operational circumstances of the force? It might well be a situation of the force interpreting policy, process and procedure to mean one and the same thing. This observation raises an interesting conundrum with respect to a GPF policy position on a range of issues. Among the policy areas which impact upon the effective performance of its ranks, and which need to be documented and highlighted, are matters pertaining to welfare issues, career development, training, civilization and health concerns. Apart from the GPF Standing Orders, the Police Act Chapter 16:01 and the Police (Discipline) Act 17:01, not much work appears to have been done to fill gaps and broaden the knowledge base of serving members of the organization. Indeed the distinct impression gained is that people are allowed to carry out their duties in an almost totally discretionary manner, leading to bad judgment calls and legal sanctions when these are unavoidable. Maybe the indiscretion seen on the part of subordinates should not come as a surprise to anyone. A casual examination of the officer corps within the force will reveal that the senior functionaries are not particularly endowed with leadership qualities. The argument must be made that attendance at tertiary institutions and overseas programmes do not necessarily make good leaders out of people who are products of a system which - for the most part - has been ambivalent about members pursuing higher education. Officers, it should be noted, have a responsibility to promote within themselves and in their ranks, a sustainable interest in self-development. With a few exceptions, senior officers are not equipped for leadership, and would prefer to remain on the streets rather than performing in an administrative capacity. The GPF administration, if awake to its responsibilities, must do all in its power to demonstrate the kind of actions synonymous with acceptance and ownership of strategic management methods, and not make that process appear as a stand-alone figment of Minister Rohee’s usually fertile imagination. This column has alluded in the past to the concept of police reform, but no evidence has been presented to convince the populace that the GPF has developed a conceptual framework which embraces a vision for reform. Practical work to implement the strategic plan of the force should not be confused with institutional reform which, as argued before, remains a mirage if the pervasive dysfunctional environment is anything to go by. SOME QUESTIONS FOR THE AFC DEAR EDITOR, Like every other Guyanese, I believe Mr. Rohee continues to project himself as the nations’ revolving circus clown. So, when I read the KN article dated October 2, 2014 and captioned “AFC is “sheepishly singing” from PPP Hymn book – Rohee” I looked past the name Rohee and focused on what I am about to learn about the AFC. S o , i g n o r i n g R o h e e ’s insinuations I decided to rely on the independent comments made by a senior operative of the AFC, coupled with additional

information reported in the article. In the article it is reported that the AFC had expressed an intention to form a government of National Unity. However, in an effort to further promote the AFC’s position on its “Government of National Unity” concept, the report went on to quote senior AFC member, Mr. Nigel Hughes, as saying that “the AFC will also welcome persons who are currently serving under another political party,” but noted that they “must be of quality.” Editor, having read these statements, as expressed in

the news item, I am forced to ask the AFC these pointed questions; 1. At what point of the AFC’s life-cycle did it decide that it will promote this idea of a “government of National Unity? I am aware that organizations, like ordinary social beings, do and are capable of changing course and position, since not only insects can metamorphose. 2. How is the AFC’s concept of a government of national unity different from the APNU’s Blueprint and model? Is this difference in the name, in that the AFC

does not prefer to have the word “Partnership” in its concoction or is it that the letter “A” makes that big difference? Or does the difference lies in the positioning of the words “unity” and “government”? Guyanese people will need this clarity, as they are already accustomed to the APNU’s brand of a National Unity government as is outlined in the organization’s concept document. 3. What does the AFC mean when it speaks about “welcoming persons, in its unity government, who are (Continued on page 6)

Bakr’s argument and therefore The mystery at Survival lends question to his sincerity Supermarket and Giftland Office Max

DEAR EDITOR, The CARICOM Reparations process has gone miles beyond the debate of whether to pursue reparations or not. Yet Mr. Abu Bakr seems to have been left at the train station or missed the elevator and remains mentally stranded on the ground. In his recent missive addressing Mr. Cedric Joseph’s fact based letter (SN October 30 , Mr. Abu Bakr responds by indicating “Joseph’s letter evades the issue of whom should pay reparations to whom”. Why Mr. Abu Bakr w a n t s M r. J o s e p h t o pronounce on which of the eight European Countries should pay reparations to Africans in the same way Germany was forced to pay reparations to Israel, is hidden in the arguments his letter makes. His first argument is the 6 for 9 argument that Africans sold Africans and therefore African should not receive Reparations from Europe or should Reparations (to whom?). This non-issue seems to have imprisoned Mr. Abu Bakr’s thought processes for Mr. Bakr fully well knows Africans did not practice chattel slavery, did not create chattel slavery and did not run the 400 year criminal enterprise called “a crime against humanity” at the 2001 United Nations Sponsored Durban Conference. Given Mr. Abu Bakr is a person of considerable intellect, there seems to be a legal disconnectabout

thereason why Europeans should pay reparations for the crime of chattel slavery which was state sponsored, church sponsored, private sector sponsored and which wasand is criminal enrichment. I am certain the ordinary illiterate in the street would know that it is not the person who sold the gun, but the criminal who used the gun to kill, rape and plunder, who would be held criminally responsible. I guess Mr. Bakr has his own reasons for this pers onal amnes ia and cognitive dissonance. The second point raised by Mr. Abu Bakr is an attempt, much like one of his earlier letters, to embed racism into the local reparations debate in Guyana. The quintessential “divide and conquer” Euorpean governance philosophy. I doubt Mr. Bakr writes on reparations in the Trinidad or Jamaican media so I must conclude his efforts and knowledge are about the dynamics of Guyana. Hence as Mr. Bakr introduces racism or discrimination by writing “So, in the Reparations talk there is this strange absence of the other victims. It would appear to me that the African activists leading the charge are, as usual, guilty of the same crimes of which they accuse the White Man, a self-serving ethnocentricty as unconscionable in its blindness as the ills they decry. “ I am puzzled by theenlightened idiocy of this statement by Mr. Abu Bakr given his deep interest in

Guyana and his knowledge that the issue of “reparations” isaddressed by a Government of Guyana appointed Reparations Committee in which the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, a government controlled and managed ministry, was invited on many occasions to be a part of the Guyana National Committee since September 2013. I am sure he knows there has been no response from the Minister of Amerindian Affairs to the numerous letters and approaches made. Why Mr. Abu Bakr doesn’t write to the Editor asking the said Minister why no participation is a mystery unless one wants to create public mischief as his letter suggests. Perhaps Mr. Abu Bar already knows (I am sure of this) that the Indigenous experience in Guyana was very different form the Indigenous experience in St Vincent (Garifuna) and other Islands. Perhaps Mr. Abu Bakr knows the 80,000 Indigenous population in Guyana have already received 15% of Guyana and are perhaps satisfied with this. Perhaps Mr. Abu Bakr may know the injustice of the 15% of the land given to them by law which denies them their legitimate economic rights because the minerals below these lands are owned by the State. So Mr. Bakr, there is no African racism or ethnocentricity as you have said. Change your mindset. It unbecoming of you. Or (Continued on page 6)

DEAR EDITOR, I refer to the Tuesday last editorial of the Kaieteur News (September 30, 2014) with the lead words, “Staff turnerover and the job market.” The editorial begins; “One columnist commented recently on the high turnover of staff at two establishments.” The editorial didn’t identify the two retail outlets I had named in my column-Survival Supermarket on Sheriff Street and Giftland Office Max. In my column, I made a comparison with other businesses which the editorial writer overlooked. I now return to it. Why is it that at two dozen other places I patronize, the staff has been there for years but not so at Survival Supermarket? What is interesting for commentators and researchers to note is that a huge retail entity, Budget Supermarket, opened up three years ago right next to Survival and four young ladies left Survival and went over to Budget; they are still there Why are they still at Budget? In those three years, I have seen dozens and dozens of young men and women pass through Survival. It is a thing to behold. You have to see it for yourself. You meet these nice

young people from different types of ethnicities, different parts of Region 3 and 4. Yes, they come as far as Region 3 to work at Survival. I met this young lady from Essequibo at Survival and she literally begged me to get her another job because with the rent she was paying in Cummings Lodge plus transport cost, she had no income. She had six CSEC passes with both English and Math. I asked Mike Khan, the CEO of the Georgetown Hospital to do his best and he came through. Today that young lady has earned promotion at the Georgetown Hospital and is set. I will always be grateful to Mike Khan who helped that Essequibo girl or should I say rescued her from an uncertain future at Survival. That was about ten years ago, so you could well imagine how many more requests for better employment

I got from Survival employees I don’t have the answer for why those trainees never stay at Giftland Office Max. But this I know; now that Office Max will be moving just next door to where I live, I will research the staff and see who stays and who leaves. They said that they have a large number of employees who recently responded to their call to fill pressing vacancies. It is easy to check on them. When I am driving home every morning, I will stop in to see if the nice people I met last week are still there I have my reasons for the huge and constant exodus from these two business entities and a few others but I think someone should do the research. I mean why these two places cannot retain their staff? In fairness to other establishments, I will list a few that I go to often where (Continued on page 6)

Kaieteur M@ilbox Kaieteur M@ilbox Responding to Mr. Persaud SOME QUESTIONS FOR... DEAR EDITOR, Mr. A Persaud has written to the press KN 1.10.14 “correcting a distortion of the facts” in response to my letter regarding wanton destruction of wildlife. It is regrettable that, prior to writing my letter to the press, my attempts to make contact with Mr. Persaud on this matter were futile as he could have informed me directly of the circumstances leading to the extraordinary photo of the dead puma sent to me by a concerned citizen albeit two years later. I hope that he can understand my confusion as the hunter in the photograph next to the dead puma was posing, not with a shotgun, but rather with what appeared to be a highpowered rifle. Nevertheless, better late than never. I restate, as in my original letter, that I believe in working with hunters to address wildlife issues so I

am delighted to learn that Mr. Persaud and I share a similar approach to conservation. Indeed it is this kind of staunch commitment that is necessary to enable us to partner in what I believe is a needed awareness campaign to educate hunters not only on species that are protected from hunting but also on mechanisms to assist when capture and relocation is desired. Additionally, the fact that the puma meat was given by Mr. Persaud “to a Chinese friend who considered it a delicacy” has just broadened the scope of the awareness campaign to also reach the Chinese companies and individuals so as to educate them that our wildlife are much valued by Guyanese and tourists alive rather than in a pot. O n M r. P e r s a u d ’s contention that “pumas are being hunted legally to this day even in the USA,” I would point out that the

American wildlife regulatory agencies have a long history of very robust monitoring of their hunting seasons and such harvesting of wildlife, whereas in Guyana we are very much in our embryonic stage. We have a long way to go but the signs are encouraging as the Permanent Secretary of our Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has committed that Ministry’s full support for the awareness programme. I am convinced that with the help of concerned hunters, such as Mr. Persaud, and others who generously engaged me this week that we will get there. Finally, regarding the questioning by Mr Persaud of my “agenda” for campaigning so strongly about the indiscriminate shooting of pumas and other wildlife, I attach a photo which I hope makes pellucid what my “agenda” is. Annette Arjoon-Martins

Bakr’s argument and therefore... From page 5 perhaps not. Neither am I aggrieved by your antics in this area. Finally, Mr Bakr states in his response to Mr. Joseph’s brilliant factual letter “In sum, seeking a big British law firm is okay, but we have to allow into our midst our own devil’s advocates to anticipate and examine the counter-arguments our case will meet in any tribunal. Dismissing this process, as happened when AfroAmerican scholar Henry Louis Gates was pilloried for saying things (that Africans were involved in the slave trade) unacceptable to the mythified narrative some Blacks prefer, is to reduce us to an unthinking mob. For that there would be volunteers, but there cannot be conscripts”. That Africans sold Africans, there is no debate or denial. But the Reparations Movement and Case is for “crimes against humanity” for Indigenous

Genocide and African Slavery in the Caribbean. It seems as if Mr. Abu Bakr feels left out of the debate and wants to be officially invited into the debate. Stating, however, that Africans are to pay Africans reparations by presenting the trivial idea , namely: “ Africans visited Brazil to look at the slave plantations, or Europe to look at the cities, (and) still kept shipping them out. Preparing them, it could be said, to lay claims to reparations in the soon future. “…….is a logic not heard by reasonable people. The question then becomes 1) Whom were these Africans? 2) How many were they? 3) Whose ship did they travel on? 4) How did they return to Africa? 5) How did they share this information about bad white Men with other Africans in this vast land without telecommunications or airplanes or fast boats”……. these defy the logic of Mr.

Abu Bakr’s argumentand therefore lends question to his sincerity. That CARICOM and individual sovereign states will pursue the process of reparation is a fact. That National Committees welcome inputs, this too is a fact (Guyana has open meetings every Thursday attended by 30 plus people of all walks of life). Next week (Oct 12-15) the 2nd Annual CARICOM Reparations Conference in Antigua will be held with the theme”An Experts Conference on Caribbean Reparation: scientific engagement and community mobilization”. Invitees include Congressman John Conyers (USA) , Hon. PJ Patterson (former PM of Jamaica); Dr. Julius Garvey (son of Marcus Garvey); Lord Anthony Gifford (former Member of the Group of Eminent Persons on Reparations; Sister Esther (UK) and several Prime Ministers. Perhaps, Brother Abu Bakr may wish to attend the Conference and share his valuable insights with the Experts over a 4 day period. 2015 is the beginning of the United Nations decade for People of African descent and Reparations is a key theme. As Sir Hilary Beckles puts it” “This is the century that will be known for reparatory justice”. Eric Phillips

From page 4 currently serving under another political entity? Isn’t this what the APNU has done and continues to do? As per its manifesto! Or is the AFC’s approach different because it does not support the APNU model of targeting both individuals and organizations? Which means that the AFC might only be interested in attracting individuals and not necessarily organizations? 4. The question of who the AFC hopes to have join its “unity government”, also caused me to do some careful analysis. I noted that in the press report, Mr. Hughes is quoted as saying that those individuals, whom the AFC hopes to invite under its perceived, umbrella must be “of quality”. This particular caveat provoked me to ask the AFC to define for Guyanese what it means when it speaks of “people of quality”. Is the AFC saying to us that the AFC only has “people of quality?” If this is to be concluded, then it is only fair that the AFC, explain to those whom it hopes to attract what qualities they need to exhibit in order to be deemed “of quality” and therefore becomes capable of associating with the AFC. I have observed this kind of “we better than dem” kind of mentality projected throughout the social media comments by some who seem to speak for the AFC’s leadership. Having read this article, I am inclined to believe that those social media comments have their foundation in some written or unwritten policy of the AFC. If not, the AFC may consider it wise to make certain definitive statements. I have written time and again about the lack of respect the PPP government demonstrates toward the people of Guyana, whom they view in very low terms. Sadly, the interjection of this “must be of quality” proviso by the AFC can be seen as a reflection of this dismissive posture. 5. Since the AFC has intimated that it is looking to form a national unity government, is it saying that the already established APNU, which has attracted more than ten political entities, other organizations and individuals, is not capable of attracting the AFC’s support? If so, why not, is it that the APNU might not be of that “high quality” the AFC speaks of? If the AFC’s political philosophy is grounded in a belief that it is better than any, then one may have to question the every action of the AFC in order to determine whether its political agenda is driven by a sincere quest for good governance or whether its program is rooted in a desire to achieve “opposition political hegemony”. Let me state clearly that, I do believe that political parties have a right to desire to be on top, as the whole nature of politics rest in securing political power. However, I do believe that

The mystery... From page 5 the staff are there for years; Mattai’s; Nigel’s; Banks DIH, all their outlets; Budget Supermarket; Bonny’s Supermarket; Roti Shop on Sheriff Street; Hot and Spicy on Albert Street; Austin’s Book Store; Spicy Dish on David Street, Kitty; Avon DVD Club on Camp Street; Movieland in the Regency Mall on Regent Street; Kanhai’s Electrical, the two outlets on Regent Street; Medicare Pharmacy on New Market Street; Mario’s Pizza. I have known employees working at these places for years. What is wrong at Survival where they never stay and Giftland Office Max where only a few remain? I guess this is one of the mysteries of the retail trade in Guyana Frederick Kissoon

practical and smart politicians pay attention to reality and understand that political strength is not given to the party by itself but rather that strength rest with the people. Real political leadership is not determined by how much one party thinks it is better than the other, but by the confidence people have come to place in that party, owing to its work in their community, overtime. 6. Noting the AFC’s comments, within recent times, is it fair to conclude that the AFC does not believe that its brand will be a good fix under the APNU’s tent? Or does the AFC believe it will be in its interest to have the APNU fold up its tent and squeeze under the, contemplated, AFC tent? 7. Finally, in my list of questions, does the AFC really believe that by now intimating its interest to form some big tent coalition, it will be helping the people of Guyana to vote out the present regime? Does the AFC really believe in such wishful thinking? In politics timing is everything. I am not in any way intimating that the AFC might not be capable of attracting some “high quality” people to walk under its tent. However, my question remains does the AFC seriously believe it can, at this time, organize such a coalition to successfully vote and dethrone the tyrant that parades as government? 8. What is the AFC’s present objective? Is it to, simply have the APNU’s support to pass the No Confidence Motion, or is to ensure that good governance is returned to the people of Guyana now! If it is the latter, I believe that the AFC needs to do some serious realignment of its political strategy lest its actions aid in the perpetuation of the current cabal on the people of Guyana. The most politically naïve of us would tell you that the chances of the APNU winning the next election is a three-way race is higher than the AFC’s. So, the AFC will have to decide whether its immediate objective is to continue to be, as it says, “the third force” or whether it will be on the side of the people. From what was reported in the KN article, it appears that the AFC’s current focus is on getting the No Confidence vote passed and possibly looking out for National Elections. I believe those of us who understand the psyche of the PPP would agree that they will have to be dealt with on all fronts. We have seen this regime stall important national decisions in the court system as it tries to buy time to consider its next ploy on the people. It is therefore critical that the people of Guyana use every legitimate avenue available to them to realize good governance and real democracy in Guyana. For this reason, it would be good to know of the AFC’s position on Local Government Elections (LGE). We know that the APNU has embarked on an extensive and rigorous campaign, nationwide, to demand that the people, after fourteen long years, are able to elect their local leaders. Will the AFC support the APNU and the people of Guyana in this noble quest for LGE? The people’s quest for democracy must not be bound up in a single “No Confidence Motion”. The PPP must know that LGE is not a substitute for National Election or vice versa. The people are ready for any and all elections, all are important. It is not Rohee’s call to ask or say which one the people should have, but rather it is the people who dictate what happens in this scenario, and what I have seen thus far indicates to me that the people are ready for all elections, even though the PPP has clearly indicated that it is not ready. The table is turning! Lurlene Nestor

Kerry urges Haiti president over long-delayed elections

US Secretary of State John Kerry (R) poses with Haitian President Michel Martelly ahead of a bilateral meeting at the State Department in Washington, DC (AFP Photo/Mandel Ngan) Washington (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry urged Haitian President Michel Martelly to hold parliamentary and local elections scheduled for the end of this month in a “timely fashion.” The elections have been delayed for three years amid a slow recovery from the 2010 earthquake that devastated the deeply impoverished nation. Martelly said in June the first round of elections for 20 senators and 112 deputies will be held on October 26, while a municipal vote is to take place two days later. In a telephone conversation with the Haitian leader, Kerry “commended President Martelly’s efforts to build consensus around electoral legislation that will allow elections to occur in a timely fashion,” according to a

statement. Kerry also “stressed the need for all Haitians to come together in good faith to support elections,” and urged Martelly to continue to work with other political parties and civil society. The delayed elections have sparked antigovernment demonstrations in the Caribbean nation, with protestors calling for Martelly to step down. The opposition has also called for a new election commission less biased toward the president. Four years after the massive earthquake, Haiti is still struggling to recover from the widespread devastation that killed 250,000 people and left one million people homeless. Kerry said holding elections was a crucial part of the recovery, and urged Haiti to strengthen its democracy.

Ferguson, local Entertainment Industry reps to have Ebola talks Jamaica Gleaner - The Health Minister, Dr Fenton Ferguson is to meet with representatives of the Entertainment Industry to speak to the issue of non-essential travel to Ebola affected countries in West Africa. Ferguson says the meeting will also involve the Tourism Minister and that tough decisions will have to be made. He says if the entertainers decide to go to Africa, despite his appeals the Government’s actions may include quarantining them on their return. According to the ministry, steps have

been taken to heighten surveillance and staff has already been sensitised and trained specifically with respect to Ebola. The ministry says Public hospitals across the island have also identified isolation areas and a facility has been refurbished specifically to accommodate isolation for Ebola. Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness with a death rate of up to 90 per cent. It is transmitted through direct contact with blood, and other bodily fluids or secretion such as stool, saliva, urine and semen of infected persons.

Sattaur flip flops on authenticity of e-mail to Jagdeo, Nandlall …conspiracy against KNews require aggressive condemnation -- Nagamootoo

Commissioner General of GRA, Khurshid Sattaur Recent revelations by the Commissioner General, of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Khurshid Sattaur, have heightened calls for him to resign immediately. Alliance for Change (AFC) Vice Chairman, Moses Nagamootoo, recently called the disclosure of tax information to a private citizen the worst crime committed in modern Guyana. This publication recently published the contents of an e-mail sent to former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, from Sattaur. In the mail Sattaur provided confidential tax information on a number of local daily newspapers. Another mail sent to Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, was also published. In it the two discussed their plot to silence the Kaieteur News and jail its Publisher, Glenn Lall. Several charges have since been filed against Lall, his wife Bhena and two family friends over what the tax boss calls collusion to evade taxes as well as false declarations. But Sattaur’s statements over the past week have been contradictory at best. Sattaur initially told this publication he will not comment on the emails. Then in other sections

of the media he claimed that the mails published were all fabrications. But he changed his tune within hours and he is now calling on police to investigate how Kaieteur News came to be in possession of the mails, which he described as confidential. According to an article published elsewhere, Sattaur

is reported as saying that his staffers have been compromised and he points to what he has called the recent disclosures of confidential information. The Commissioner General is also quoted as saying that Lall was able to obtain confidential information on Sataur ’s overseas travel plans, the

purpose of his visit overseas and information on an initial analysis of the income of media houses to inform the need for an audit. Sattaur is also quoted as saying that subsequent to the ‘unlawful disclosures of information, obtained by illegal and illicit means’, he has since taken numerous steps to buttress its Information Technology Security Infrastructure, internal access to, and transmission of sensitive taxpayer information, in addition to launching an Continued on page 14

GCCI executive calls for full investigation of shared tax information Former President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Clinton Urling is calling for an investigation into the recent purported sharing of tax information by Guyana Revenue Authority head, Khurshid Sattaur, with former President Bharrat Jagdeo. According to Urling, if the pieces of mail are authentic then there was a breach of the rule of law. Urling told this newspaper that his statement is not made on behalf of the GCCI but that body is expected to make a public statement shortly. According to Urling, there needs to be a full investigation to determine first of all, if the emails are authentic. Neither Sattaur nor Attorney General Anil Nandlall has refuted the authenticity of the email. Sattaur is on record asking for the police to investigate how Kaieteur News managed to access email inside of the GRA. Sattaur, during an interview with this newspaper, denied sending any email to former President, Bharrat Jagdeo or Attorney General Anil Nandlall. But in the next breath he acknowledged that the mail are authentic and he blames

“corrupt people” within the GRA for leaking information to Kaieteur News. This publication on Sunday published a redacted email sent from Sattaur to Jagdeo, where he divulged the tax information of several privately-owned media houses. In another email, this time to Attorney General Anil Nandlall, Sattaur informed that he had provided the former President with “information which I would expect he treats with the utmost confidentiality”. According to the email, Sattaur informs Nandlall that “since we are in this thing together, I see no harm in sharing this with you. However, further to the assurances you have given

me that the Government will be pursuing the newspaper for libel and other offences of a criminal nature, I will await the determination of such action before I provide you with the details on Kaieteur News.” In another email sent to the Attorney General, Sattaur claims that it is of “grave concern to me that the owner of Kaieteur News is engaged in a psychological game of tit for tat as it relates to targeting me every time something very obnoxious bordering onto illegality get leaked on him or that affects his credibility.” According to Sattaur, in the email, “As the Attorney General of this great land of ours the minimum I would expect from you is legal protection from the courts invoking the laws that protects me against such attacks using his media house, as this individual knows no limits as to what he can put someone through once he targets them.”

Sex offenders continue to walk free Perpetrators of sexual offences in Guyana continue to walk free because the victims are reluctant to pursue the matters in the High Court. Judging from figures released by the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, following the closure of the Demerara June Assizes, a number of cases in the sexual offences bracket, including rape, were Nolle Prosequi by DPP Shalimar AliHack, when the victims declined to testify against the accused persons. According to the figures, 17 sexual offence cases were dealt with by justices William Ramlal, James Bovell-Drakes and Rishi Persaud. They comprised, rape, buggery, indecent assault and incest. Except for one matter where the accused pleaded guilty, another where there was a not guilty verdict and one more where the accused asked for time to present his defence, the other matters were discontinued, mainly because the virtual complainants had migrated or had refused to testify. During July, seven sexual offences matters were presented before Justice James Bovell-Drakes. Of these seven matters, four were for rape, one of Buggery, one for Carnal Knowledge and another one for the offence of lncest. In five of these matters, the Virtual Complainants (VCs) testified before the jury that they no longer wished to give any evidence against the accused. Justice BovellDrakes had no option but to direct the jury to return formal verdicts of not guilty. In the matter for the offence of Buggery, evidence was led to prove that the complainant had migrated and was no longer interested

Justice William Ramlal in proceeding with the matter. The accused in the matter for the offence of Incest was acquitted after the jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty. Justice William Ramlal dealt with one sexual offence matter and in that matter for Rape and Robbery, he quashed the indictment and ordered that the Preliminary Inquiry be done over. Justice Rishi Persaud disposed of seven matters for the offences of Rape, Rape and Indecent Assault, attempt to commit a felony and Indecent Assault and Carnal Knowledge of a girl under 15 years. The accused in one of the matters for Rape of a child under 15 years of age pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment. The Virtual Complainants in the other six matters testified before the jury that they did not wish to testify. The Trial Judge directed the jury to return formal verdicts of not guilty. Four matters were presented before Justice Naresh Harnanan. Two of these four matters were for the offence of Rape, while a third matter was for the offence of Carnal Knowledge of a Girl under 15 years and Buggery. The fourth matter was for the offence of Rape, Buggery and Robbery under Arms. The accused in one Rape case was acquitted after the jury returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty, while in the other Rape matter a retrial was ordered after a hung jury was returned. The VC in the matter of Carnal Knowledge of a Girl under 15 years and Buggery testified before the jury that she did not wish to offer any evidence and the Trial Judge

DPP Shalimar Ali-hack directed the jury to return a formal not guilty verdict. In the case of Buggery and Robbery Under Arms, the unrepresented accused informed the court that he would need five years to prepare his own defence. He was further remanded to Prison. The June Demerara Criminal Assizes commenced with three judges, Justice William Ramlal, Justice Navindra Singh, and Madam Justice Dawn Gregory, sitting during the month of June. Then five judges- Justice Franklyn Holder, Justice James Bovell-Drakes, Madam Justice Diana lnsanally, Justice Naresh Harnanan and Justice Rishi Persaud - sat during the month of July. Two of these judges, Justice Franklyn Holder and Madam Justice Diana Insanally, continued during the month of September, bringing the Assizes to an end. During this Assizes which commenced on Tuesday June 3, 2O14, a total of 242 cases were listed to be heard but only 49 matters were disposed of. In addition to the 17 (Continued on page 60)

Joint Opposition stands firm with Kaieteur News against Sattaur’s “devious” attacks In the face of what he described as former president Bharrat Jagdeo and tax chief, Khurshid Sattaur’s “devious” attacks to destroy Kaieteur News, General Secretary of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Joseph Harmon, has said that the newspaper will have his coalition’s “unwavering support in the fight for democracy against the powers that may be”. The Alliance For Change (AFC) yesterday also issued a statement in which it expressed dissatisfaction over the dilemma. Over the past weeks, several email between Jagdeo and Sattaur which exposed their apparent plot to “close down” the newspaper hit the news pages. Sattaur had sent the former president the tax information of several news entities. This information was then forwarded to Attorney General, Anil Nandlall. Many have said that it is, without a doubt, an undeniable breach of the Oath of Secrecy that was taken by the Chartered Accountant.

“We want to put the government and Sattaur on notice that we will not sit idly by and watch them violate the rights of citizens” - Harmon Calls since the revelations by this newspaper have been unending for Sattaur ’s immediate resignation. In light of the publications of the damning evidence, comments from political figures, accountants, lawyers and even the ordinary man have followed, particularly on how the Parliament and even institutions to which the tax chief is attached should deal with him. Harmon said yesterday that his coalition considers Sattaur’s actions to be a most “sickening and frightening prospect for the people of Guyana”. “The APNU views Sattaur’s behaviour as not only an attack on the Kaieteur News but a clear disrespect and disregard for the Constitutional rights of citizens to access information. We will stand firm by the

Kaieteur News. “We want to put the government and Sattaur on notice that we will not sit idly by and watch them violate the rights of citizens. The government’s inaction in light of Sattaur’s behaviour reflects full support of such scales of lawlessness by public officials,” The APNU executive member expressed. Harmon stated that Sattaur’s actions clearly leave the natýon’s tax information open for “abuse at any time”. The APNU parliamentarian said, too, that once the Customs and Excise Tax Department in any country is breached, its trade and commerce, the heart beat of its economic life, is in jeopardy. AFC, at a meeting yesterday to plan for General Elections next year, also addressed the situation

Another gold miner buried alive Another gold miner working in the Mahdia district was buried alive when the walls of the 20-foot pit in which he was working caved in yesterday. It took colleagues about three hours of digging to reach the body of 42-year-old Nolan Lindie, but by the time they were able to free his body from tonnes of rubble, it was too late. Police in a press release stated that at about 10:30hours yesterday, Lindie,

of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was working in a mining pit at Mahdia, Potaro, when the wall of the pit caved in on him. He was later taken out and taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Lindie, who has no children, had returned to mining about three weeks ago after a brief lull. His brother, Stanley, who is working in the same area, told this newspaper via

telephone that Lindie was working with four other men in the pit. He said that from the reports he received, Lindie was the only one who was caught under the falling rubble. “The landslide and cover he. He didn’t get a chance to move out. It tek dem about three hours fuh dig he out.” Stanley described the land where Lindie was working as very treacherous. “It li’l dangerous; is about 20 feet,” he said.

regarding Kaieteur News. The party said, “The meeting also expressed solidarity with Kaieteur News which is being subjected to attempts to muzzle it as a member of the free press.” Chairman of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, recently stated that he believes that the National Assembly should address with urgency the breach of the “Oath of Secrecy” by the Commissioner General. It has always been the suspicion, since independence, that the tax department has been used as an instrument in which citizens have been threatened if they criticize the administration, he said. “But now, we have confirmation that the department has made itself available to the Government of the day for use against the citizenry and that is really the most frightening aspect of it. I believe because of this magnitude, the Parliament needs to address this as a matter of urgency,” Hughes stated. He made reference to the powers of the GRA, one being the ability to forfeit one’s assets and the fact it is responsible for taxing the entire Judiciary. He said that if one were to contemplate the powers of the Tax Chief, it certainly underscores the need for the Parliament to address his behaviour in light of the revelations. Hughes then added that

APNU General Secretary, Joseph Harmon

AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan

Sattaur’s actions to close down one of the prominent members of the fourth estate, Kaieteur News, in such a manner is an issue that the Parliament ought to address as a matter of grave importance. AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan had also said that the party has already begun sharing its views with the diplomatic community.

Ramjattan had said that his party plans to send the information to organizations such as CARICOM, the United Nations and the Organization of American States. He said that this was being done to externalize the kind of misconduct that is being condoned by “top notch administrators” in Guyana. (See emails on page 15)

Sattaur flip flops... From page 9 intensive investigation into the source of these leaks and other illegal and illicit activities. Nagamootoo was adamant that Sattaur has not denied that the emails linking him to a plot to destroy Kaieteur News are fakes. He has raised an issue that should be of concern to the citizens, that is, whether his confidential communication has been hacked. “If he is worried by this, as he should be, why does he feel that leaking confidential information of taxpayers to Bharrat Jagdeo or any other private citizens not authorised to receive such information, should be excused? The conspiracy against KN requires aggressive exposure and condemnation!”

Since we are in this thing together, I see no harm in sharing this with you. However further to the assurances you have given me that the Government will be pursuing the newspaper for libel and other offences of a criminal nature, I will await the determination of such action before I provide you with the details on Kaieteur News. Of course I am deeply indebted to the Government for the confidence it places in me to continue to execute my duties as CG. I spoke with the honorable BJ and he suggested that the recent outrageous article published on me should for “media purposes” be attributed to the impending major audit of the Kaieteur News which in his usual irregular and surreptitious manner the newspaper was able to uncover. Please note however, unless there is a major gag order from the court with a threat of maximum imprisonment I am not prepared to have this most recent proposed action made public. This as they say in proverbial language is likely to break the camel’s back and the individual may go berserk All for your information and necessary action K Sattaur Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Third email: From Anil Nandlall to Khurshid Sattaur Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone.

Dear CG, I read your email and I noted the concerns which you have expressed. I read the article published in yesterday Kaieteur News stating that you were arrested in Trinidad. It is as nasty as it is libellous. As soon as I receive the newspapers clippings which I have requested from you via telephone, I will transmit same to Mr. Ashton Chase, S.C., with firm instructions to proceed with litigation including injunctive reliefs. Please be assured that the Government will support and defend every public officer .who is obstructed, intimidated or any in any manner interfered with in the discharged of his official duties. The rule of law must prevail. Yours faithfully, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, MP Hon. Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs.

The email correspondence among the GRA Commissioner General Kurshid Sattaur, former president Bharrat Jagdeo and Attorney General Anil Nandlall Fourth email: From Khurshid Sattaur to Anil Nandlall From: khurshid sattaur (khurshidsattaur@hotmail.com) Sent: MOD 9/15/14 8:16 AM To: Nandalall (anilnandlall@hotmail.com) AG It is of grave concern to me that the owner of Kaieteur News is engaged in a psychological game of tit for tat as it relates to targeting me every time something very obnoxious bordering onto illegality get leaked on him or that affects his credibility. This concern stems from the fact that only recently in reply to the GRA upsetting his apple cart in showing what a corrupt and criminal minded individual this invidious character he is, he published information that on closer examination can be considered as libellous. Since he is a dirty person, i am not inclined after this recent episode of slanderous reporting, prepared to expose my character to being sullied by this depraved and mentally sick individual. I must be given assurances from the government I server that no stones will be left unturned to safeguard my reputation while I pursue these kind of invidious characters. It is instructive to note that the reason why Freddie is now averse to writing trash concerning me is because a multimillion-dollar assessments hang over his head like the sword of demacles. As the Attorney General of this great land of ours the minimum I would expect from you is legal protection from the courts invoking the laws that protects me against such attacks using his media house, as this individual knows no limits as to what he can put someone through once he targets them. I have a wife and family and as recently demonstrated, in the publication captioned above, not only did the scoundrel obtain accurate information on the purpose of my trip to Trinidad but added, from the figment of his own imagination, sufficient garbage to taint me as a terrorist and a criminal minded individual similar to our attempt to portray him. The difference however between us, is that while I received a National award for outstanding work of an exceptionally high order, this demon only claim to fame is perhaps his notoriety. I am therefore appealing to you in the interest on preserving my prestige and pristine character to act condignly and swiftly to prosecute this vagrant under the Customs Act and if possible have him jailed as the offence of harassing a GRA officer us a very serious one and has jail term. I will before the end of the day have a file with the various newspaper clippings attesting to the execution of his threats he conveyed to me through a telephone conversation, on the night of the attempted seizure of his vehicles and for which i filed a police-report on the matter. I am indeed looking forward to your usual efficient manner in taking action and would be willing to give any further information you may require to have the matter successfully prosecuted.

== THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN ==

October 5 took my youth but my soul lives on I was in the John F. Kennedy library when I heard the news of the death of the President of Guyana Forbes Burnham. I was unburdened and I would be lying to say otherwise. It was not that Burnham’s policies had weakened the fabric of Guyana, but Burnham was personally involved in making my life miserable. Despite an immense nationalist heart and a learned mind, Burnham was essentially driven by authoritarian instincts. I really don’t have time for those who, because the PPP is tyrannical, elevate Burnham to an angel. I am a trained historian. I deal with the recording of facts, not my emotional and sentimental attachments to those who brought me gifts. If those who brought me gifts turned out to be miserable people who destroyed other people’s lives, then I should return t h e g i f t s . B u r n h am was undemocratic. Don’t try to polish what cannot generate sheen. The PPP government from October 5, 1992 to now was just as bad as Burnham’s. President Jagdeo from 1999 to 2011 turned out to be worse than Burnham. Jagdeo’s excesses, tyrannies, debaucheries, depravities and immoralities do not make Burnham look good. They make Burnham a better leader than Jagdeo. They do not make Burnham a good man. But let us concede to those who love Burnham that he was a good man. Was he a bad man too? Can’t a

leader embody some good and some bad? And shouldn’t a human if he/she is decent acknowledge that their hero, icon, role-model had some bad in them? Why lie to yourself to say your hero was an angel when he was not? So why was I relieved when Burnham died? Because he hurt my mother and wife, two of the greatest gifts in my life, and two persons I loved more than my own existence. When I returned home in 1984 after serving in Grenada, Mr. Burnham banned me from employment as he did in 1978 when I won the President’s Medal at UG. My mom was heartbroken to see that the only child in the family who went beyond primary school could not work to support her. She died shortly after (I will not forgive Burnham for mistreating my mother and my wife). Why ban my wife from working too? My wife never uttered a single word against Burnham. She was incapable of doing so, because politics was never ever present in her mind. It was unforgivable of Burnham to bring family into

political disputes. Burnham should have dealt with me and left my wife out of the picture. Jagdeo did the same to my wife, which is vivid testimony to the failure of October 5, 1992. That was the date when all of us who had that blood in us that goes by the name of Guyanese, thought we were on to a brave new world. It was not to be. The “great” Cheddi Jagan was now in power and the myth exploded. He wasn’t great at all. He wasn’t really different from his soul mate in the fifties, Forbes Burnham. The mythical Cheddi Jagan died in 1997 and another Forbes Burnham, another Cheddi Jagan took over - Cheddi’s wife, Janet. She was vile and heartless, but age destroyed her planning and cunning. She retired in 1999 and an uncertain face came upon the scene. The thought was that Burnham, Jagan and his wife were gone, and so too was that machine of racial preference and political division. That new face was Bharrat Jagdeo, It still remains a

mystery about where he came from, who he was, and what made him tick (I could be cynical and say a certain preference). If anyone destroyed the hope of October 5, it was Bharrat Jagdeo. But the destruction of October 5 holds in its bosom another deadly myth. All fingers point to Bharrat Jagdeo as the culprit. The reality is that it was the PPP. Jagdeo was just the mere head of the hydra. The shattered world of October 5 will always remind us that Guyanese history, after colonial rule ended, was built on lies and deception. Who was the PNC and who was the PPP? My generation was told it was a clear case of black and white; no grey areas. The PNC was the bad guy. The PPP was the good guy. After October 5, 1992, the good guy was now in power, our dreams had come true.

But history and life are streams that dictate their own flow; we mortals are mere spectators. After 1992, roles got reversed. The PNC became the good guy, the PPP the big bad wolf. And what a ferocious wolf it was and is. Mr. Burnham was flawed. But the PPP after October 5 demonstrated that it was not

Frederick Kissoon just bad but evil. That’s where we are at the moment.

The end of military rule in Fiji: The Commonwealth's... From page 21 population would broadly accept. Anyaoku appointed Sir Paul, whose guidance led to a new Constitution and Fiji's readmission to the Commonwealth. Three years later, Fiji was again thrown into disarray through a coup and CMAG

immediately suspended it from Commonwealth membership. Secretary-General, Don McKinnon, appointed Justice Pius Langa, the former VicePresident of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, as his special envoy. After much hard work, the 1997 Constitution was rein-

stated, elections held in August 2001 observed by the Commonwealth, and Fiji returned for a second time to full Commonwealth membership. Then, in 2006, Commodore Bainimarama struck, unseating the elected government in a bloodless coup and imposing military rule with himself as head of government. This occasioned Fiji's suspension from the Commonwealth yet again. And, McKinnon turned again to Sir Paul who died before there was any progress from his second round of labour in Fiji. The present SecretaryGeneral Kamalesh Sharma kept up links to the Fiji government, encouraged in this by the big Commonwealth countries in the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, but also by Fiji's smaller neighbours.

Under pressure within Fiji and from neighbouring Pacific countries as well as the United States to hold free and fair elections, Bainimarama's regime established another new constitution which became law in 2013. The new constitution was not universally applauded. Dissenting groups within Fiji and leading non-governmental organizations in the international community were troubled by it. But, it led the way for the Commonwealth Secretariat to become involved in pre-election arrangements and to observe the general elections held this year on 17 September. The efforts of the Commonwealth and successive Secretaries-General may seem to have been a great labour over a small country with a population of less than a million. But each of those people

is entitled to live in freedom and associate through political parties of their choice. It may not have been the Commonwealth alone that ended eight years of unelected rule in Fiji, but the perseverance of the association did play an important role in ending the rule of the military junta and in the establishment of a broadly acceptable Constitution and a general election process. As Secretary-General Sharma said the election was “a critical step in Fiji's return to full democratic and civilian constitutional rule”. The Commonwealth stands out as the only multilateral organisation that penalises member governments which seriously or persistently violate its core values. It is also admirable for its continued engagement to uphold democracy and civil and

political rights in its member countries – not always to the satisfaction of all, but with perseverance showed by no other multilateral organisation. As for Fiji's return to the Commonwealth, the words of Archbishop Tutu resonate loudly when he said of South Africa's readmission to the association after the fall of the apartheid regime: “It was the South African regime that left the Commonwealth, not the South African people”. The people of Fiji are better-off, in more ways than one, for being back in the Commonwealth family. My column

Coincidence or deliberate action?

The advertisement placed in the newspapers by the Guyana Revenue Authority cannot escape notice. It is large and it contains reports of a suspected breach of the security of the revenue collection agency. Indeed email emanating from the Commissioner-General Khurshid Sattaur, although not in his capacity as Commissioner-General, detailed a series of proposed actions against Glenn Lall, the publisher of Kaieteur News. Needless to say, the contents of the e-mail were damaging to Mr Sattaur since they exposed a side of him that was unknown by most. The mail spoke of a planned course of action against Lall, whom Sattaur described as many things, including a vagrant. A vagrant is someone with no fixed place of abode, so Mr Sattaur knew something about Lall that the rest of the country did not. But even more serious is the planned attack to silence and even jail him for crimes imagined. I say imagined, because nothing in the law supported Mr Sattaur’s pursuit of Mr Lall. Then there is the call for the police to investigate what Mr Sattaur calls a breach of security. Initially, this caused me some confusion because in one publication, Mr Sattaur was quoted as saying that the e-mail were fakes. For someone to say in one breath that the e-mail were fakes, and in the next to admit that he did send them, is indeed confusion.

A long time ago, the late Forbes Burnham said that once something is put down on paper, that piece of paper is likely to end up anywhere, even in places where it was never intended to go. The late Fr Andrew Morrison made good use of such pieces of paper. I remember instances of Burnham making travel plans and indicating the kind of beverages he would like on the aircraft. The list immediately made the Catholic Standard, much to Burnham’s annoyance. In one case, at a meeting of the Central Executive of the then ruling Party, Burnham announced that he would catch the Quisling. He has gone to his grave, but he never did. In the same vein, I have been hearing about security breaches in the United States. One major retail outlet, Target, reported that somehow, a group had got hold of people’s personal information. The company said that the information included people’s credit card numbers, their social security numbers, and other such information. Just this past week there was a report that another company had found what is considered the largest breach in United States history. The accounts of 75 million people had been accessed and stolen. Fortunately whoever did have not tried to access these people’s bank accounts because as the company noted, there were no unusual levels of spending against

these people. Even scarier has been the case of nude photographs of actresses and other prominent socialites being hacked and released to the public. These were posted on iCloud, the storage warehouse created by Apple for users of Apple products. These days, there is no failsafe for people using the global communication network. That Sattaur has had his information revealed should come as no surprise. My e-mail has been hacked perhaps more times than I would ever know. I certainly remember the last time, because I was confronted with information that I had sent and received. This time around, Mr Sattaur is asking the police to investigate and to get Lall to say how he came by the email that have exposed Sattaur. The police may have to do to Lall what the Americans have been accused of doing to the prisoners at Guantanamo and have been roundly criticized

for.

And while all this has happened, someone approached the commercial bank I use for information on my account. I know that the government has done such a thing to other people in the past. In our society, people are not likely to oppose officialdom, so when an official makes a request of a commercial bank, the information is quietly released. In my case, I cannot say with certainty that the information was released, but I wondered at the sudden interest in me. As if that was not enough my daughter, Karen, who is employed at Scotiabank told me Friday night that she got a letter from the Guyana Revenue Authority that she had sent in her income tax returns 23 days late and had incurred a penalty of $14,000. I would like to believe that she was not the only person who filed late returns and that she was not the only person who got such a letter. I do not

have the time to mount an investigation. I know that there is a penalty for late returns and something at the back of my head tells me that it is a small percentage of the tax. If that is the case, then my daughter is working for an astronomical sum per annum to be paying even more taxes than Guyana Times and many large companies in Guyana. Perhaps it is coincidental that she has been written to at the same time the Guyana Revenue Authority has its fangs bared at Kaieteur News, where I am the Editorin-Chief. It remains that the GRA has filed tax evasion charges against Lall, his wife and two family friends, and the summons have not yet been served. In fact, had it not been for the release of the charge in two newspapers

Adam Harris aligned to the ruling party, no one would have been any the wiser. And since by his own admission, Mr Sattaur has said that he released confidential information to a private citizen, he is now liable to criminal prosecution. It would be interesting to see how this plays out.

Honesty needed Gail, not this Teixeirian dialectic By Khemraj Ramjattan AFC Leader The hardliners within the hierarchy of the PPP, who largely mould that Party, have been well trained in creating and directing propaganda far removed from truth and reason. This they do to destroy existing and nascent opposition from within and without. Their further purposes include diverting attention away from biting critiques as to their ineptitude and corruption; and, the attenuation of the effects of their disgusting hypocrisy and double-standards. These days they are in record-breaking form. The Marxian dialectic, that useful tool of social analysis, which they claim is close to their

chest, has been malignantly transformed into what should be known from now on as the Gail Teixeirian dialectic. This variety shrouds out reason and truth for the grander glorification of the Party and its leaders; and, at the same time the vilification and damnation of its opponents. The AFC wishes to warn them about this development in our politics. It is extremely shortsighted not to see the historical limits of this organized deception which sooner or later will be exposed. A recent example of this demolition of truth and reason is captured in the massive missive by Ms Teixeira on the trumped-up and politically motivated allegations of

sexual assault against cofounder of AFC and House Speaker, Mr Raphael Trotman. I am so happy that short shrift was made of it by Karen De Souza in a biting response the next day. I want to remind the Governance Advisor to the President that she had nothing to say about the human rights of Varshnie Singh who was fooled by then President Jagdeo into thinking that she, Varshnie, was married to him. Moreover, I want her know that it is an accurate proposition of law that if a man were to deceive a woman into believing that he is her husband, and then proceed to have intimate relations with her, such an act is the act of a

rapist. So Ms Teixeira has no moral authority in view of her silence then to talk about “men with power or money who get away with sex offences”. But in her recent missive she wants to pronounce on the error of the issuance of an injunction which seeks to halt the scandalizing of the Speaker. She conveniently forgets the sub judice rule she regularly espouses and defends in and out of the Parliament to demand that others shut up about matters in Court. Come on Gail…how inconsistent, how discriminatory! This Teixeirian dialectic has a Jagdeoian characteristic to it. Cuss down the Chief Justice, Mr Ian Chang, who ordered it. She rudely says to His Honour that the grant of the injunction “reverses the even handed role and function of the Court…how it has undermined the entire tenets of justice for victims of

sexual abuse.” And then the shamelessly derogatory rhetoric: “…the injunction validates once again public opinion of the judicial system. Can anyone blame people for that viewpoint?” This is severely contemptuous of the Judge and the administration of justice. But then again these ad hominems are to be expected from these arrogant comrades. Remember Ms Priya Manickchand and her treatment of US Ambassador Brent Hardt whist she was a guest at his Residence? Remember President Ramotar calling Moses Nagamootoo a jackass at Babu John, and calling yours truly a terrorist for not fast-tracking the AntiMoney Laundering Bill? The AFC has long realized that this is not the manner in which the powers that be ought to treat with political opponents or diplomatic dissentients or

khemraj ramjattan judicial pronouncements. Such a treatment is course, callous and cruel. The AFC was duty bound to commence the process to halt this degradation of Guyana’s politics. The noconfidence motion was that starting point. The finality of the act must be completed when the electors vote a massive no-confidence against the PPP in the national elections which must be called 90 days thereafter. There was never a better time.

SUNDAY SPECIAL GRA BOSS IS IN BREACH OF “OATH OF SECRECY”…PERHAPS WORST CRIME COMMITTED IN MODERN GUYANA– NAGAMOOTOO As its call for the resignation of the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Khurshid Sattaur remains firm, Vice Chairman of the Alliance For Change, Moses Nagamootoo, has said that Sattaur ’s actions constitute perhaps, the worst crime committed in modern Guyana. Kaieteur News, on Sunday last, stated that its Publisher, Glenn Lall, is in possession of indisputable evidence of a plot by former President Bharrat Jagdeo and Sattaur, to bring down the newspaper. That same day Sattaur issued a statement denying the plot and contended that he had a right to share information with the Head of State. The evidence revealed by Kaieteur News featured emails between Sattaur and Jagdeo which were then shared with the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall. Sattaur via email sent to Jagdeo and then to Nandlall information on the corporate taxes paid by several media houses. According to some lawyers, the information disclosed by the GRA Commissioner-General to Jagdeo, represents a grave breach of the ‘Oath of Secrecy’ sworn to by Sattaur as an officer of the Guyana Revenue Authority. In taking the Oath, Sattaur solemnly swore that he would “truly, faithfully, impartially and honestly execute the powers vested in him.” He also swore not to disclose any tax information concerning any taxpayer. In the email written by Sattaur, he asserts that Jagdeo advised him to say that “an impending major audit of the Kaieteur News” was behind the publication’s criticisms of him. VERY LITTLE SPACE LEFT FOR MORE TV, RADIO STATION IN THE CITY- BROADCASTING AUTHORITY Applicants for new television licences may find that there are not many left for allocation in the city. That is because there are few frequencies left available. And it may be the same for radio stations as well. Speaking with Kaieteur News, Chairperson of the Guyana National Broadcasting, Bibi Shadick, said the body is currently dealing with regularization of current broadcasters to adhere to the law. applications from the Georgetown area are being considered. Rather, applications from religious organizations and from outlying areas, like from Region One, are being assessed. The issue of radio, television and cable licences has been a sore one following revelations that several entities and individuals were green-lighted by former President Bharrat Jagdeo, shortly before he stepped down from office in November 2011. Most of the approvals by Jagdeo, acting in his capacity as the Minister of Information, went to close friends and associates of the ruling party. Several prominent media houses, seen as being critics, were overlooked by Jagdeo.

tax department has been used as an instrument in which citizens have been threatened if they criticize the administration. In the same breath, he said that if one were to contemplate the powers of the Tax Chief, it certainly underscores the need for the Parliament to address his behaviour in light of the revelations. Hughes then added that Sattaur’s actions to close down one of the prominent members of the fourth estate; Kaieteur News, in such a manner, is an issue that the Parliament ought to address as a matter of grave importance.

“UNSUITABLE SOIL” SLOWS DOWN AIRPORT EXPANSION PROJECT - ENGINEERS TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO RUNWAY Engineers working on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) runway expansion project will have to make what appear to be major adjustments to their plan due to unsuitable soil in some areas. Kaieteur News has confirmed that engineers are at present conducting soil tests on the southern end of the airport runway after encountering “unsuitable soil” at the northern section of the runway. Because of this, officials say the proposed design of the expanded runway is likely to change from the original plan, in which the runway would have been extended to the north. With the new plan, part of the runway will now also be extended at the southern end. Public Works Chief Roads and Bridges Engineer, Ron Rahaman, who is overseeing the project, told this newspaper that workers commenced some amount of

preparatory work north of the runway. He explained that the soil on the south seems to be better. “Right now we are doing a survey to the south of the airport because when we went to the north we found unsuitable soil conditions, so we are doing the survey and ‘bore hole testing’ to see if there are better soil conditions. “Preliminary reports are showing that the soil on the south is better so we may extend the runway; some to the south and some to the north; as against initially, it was going completely to the north.” This section where testing is currently ongoing is about 60 metres wide by 100 metres long and is about 80 percent completed. TUESDAY EDITION GRA IS CREATING LAWS THAT DO NOT EXIST — LAWYER Almost one month after seizing two vehicles belonging to a remigrant couple, the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has filed charges of fraud against Publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall and his wife, Bhena Lall. But lawyers for the Lalls

have described the criminal charges as designed to deprive the two remigrants of their vehicles. According to attorney-atlaw Robin Hunte, the fraud charges relating to the two Lexus vehicles are stupid. The only way that it could stick is if it is proven that the remigrants, Narootandeo and Gharbassi Brijnanan, are not entitled to duty free concessions. The Brijnanans are close family friends to the Lalls who have also been using the vehicles. As a matter of fact, the Customs Act, under which the charges are filed, does not even say anything that a remigrant has to buy the vehicle. It does, however, say that the remigrant must apply within six months of arriving in the country. It seems as if GRA is rewriting the law to suit its ends, the lawyer said.

MONDAY EDITION WITCH-HUNTAGAINST KNEWS…JAGDEO/ SATTAUR REVELATIONS FORWARDED TO DIPLOMATIC COMMUNITY - PARLIAMENT SHOULD ADDRESS THIS AS A MATTER OF GRAVE IMPORTANCE –NIGEL HUGHES Chairman of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes believes that the National Assembly should address with urgency the breach of the “Oath of Secrecy” by Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Khurshid Sattaur. Hughes, at his Party’s most recent press conference, asserted that the e-mails published by the Kaieteur News which showed Sattaur admitting that he sent to the former President, Bharrat Jagdeo, the tax information of several media entities and then forwarded it to Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, in a plot to shut down the newspaper, reflects a most frightening prospect for the citizenry. The Attorney-at-Law told media operatives that it has always been the suspicion, since independence, that the

The nation is entitled to have both cake and bake!

President Donald Ramotar’s tactless remarks to his supporters at a town hall meeting in New York are deeply disturbing. Ramotar told the audience, assembled by the People’s Progressive Party’s Association of Concerned Guyanese, “Well, my mother used to say you can’t have it in cake and have it in bake; you can’t have it both ways, you have to make up your mind what you want.” Ramotar, amidst friends, must have felt that he had licence to be funny by retelling an old Creole proverb. There really was nothing to laugh about

remarks which were nothing less than a callous and cynical breach of the Constitution. Ramotar was speaking about the demands by A Partnership for National Unity that he should announce a date for local government elections which were last held twenty years ago in 1994. The National Assembly passed a bill since February 2014 mandating that the elections be held by 1st August 2014. He has not done so. There was nothing funny there. The Alliance For Change had also proposed a motion expressing no-confidence in

the People’s Progressive Party Civic administration. Should that motion be approved by the National Assembly, the administration will be forced to resign. There was nothing funny there either. The President’s dilatoriness in issuing instructions to hold local government elections is deeply disturbing. These elections would allow the Guyanese people to exercise their right to elect their representatives at the earliest possible date. The President is the one who needs to make up his mind and do his duty as a national leader. He is suggesting, falsely, that there is a ‘choice’ between local government elections and general and regional elections, that is, between ‘cake’ and ‘bake.’ He is suggesting also that, APNU’s

demand for local government elections is at variance with the AFC’s motion to express ‘no-confidence’ in the government, and that could pose a constitutional dilemma. Ramotar, in so doing, is pretending that there is a contradiction. There is none. It is he who has failed the nation by not exercising his executive, constitutional duty to make a timely decision for the conduct of local government elections. It is he alone who is the author of the ‘cake-or-bake’ confusion that he is complaining about. It is he who must deliver the constitutional entitlement to both local government elections (LGE) and general and regional elections (GRE) to the nation. He cannot laugh it off. Ramotar acknowledged that he did promise ¯ in the PPPC 2011 election manifesto ¯ that, once his party was returned to office, local government elections would be held within the first year. He admitted reneging on his own promise. He explained, fatuously, “… I did not

anticipate that we would have had a one-seat minority in Parliament and that created political uncertainty… within what we call the politics of the country.” Ramotar had to be reminded that he failed to instruct his Minister of Local Government and Regional Development to issue the ‘Commencement Order’ to operationalise the Local Government Commission. He failed to assent to the Local Government (Amendment) Bill. He failed to assent to the Local Authorities (Elections) (Amendment) Bill so that elections could be held by 1st August 2014. He failed the test of presidential constitutional compliance. Ramotar had to be reminded, also, that the passage of these bills by the National Assembly was a legitimate expression of the will of the majority and should be respected. The Guyanese people, under President Ramotar, now face a grave threat to their constitutional liberties and privileges. They continue to demand that it is

their inalienable right to elect the persons they want to represent them in their towns, villages and neighbourhoods. President Ramotar tried to be jolly in New York, but his jokes did not travel well across the Atlantic. It seemed that he was either absentmindedly sleepwalking or cold-heartedly denying the entire nation its constitutional rights. Either way, the President is contriving to lead this country into a constitutional crisis which could have catastrophic consequences. The President’s inconsistent statements, unconstitutional conduct, dilatory tactics and unamusing sense of humour, are creating confusion and consternation. The President must demonstrate leadership. He must address the nation quickly and truthfully to assure the people that he will uphold their constitutional right to local government elections. The nation is entitled to have both cake and bake.

From page 27 clear Tuesay that it is in no way involved in the unlawful disclosure of the content of customers’ voice conversations, short messages (SMS) and/or electronic mails to law enforcement authorities or other third parties. This declaration comes in wake of the publication of emails between Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Khurshid Sattaur, former president Bharrat Jagdeo, and Attorney General Anil Nandlall, which exposed a plot to shut down the Kaieteur News. The company said that it can say without fear of contradiction that any such perception of its involvement in such activities would have no basis in fact. It stressed that customers can rest assured that their personally identifiable information and the contents of their communications are treated as strictly confidential, as is required under the Telecommunications Act, the Interception of Communications Act of 2008, and of the GT&T License. It also invited the public to read GT&T’s Privacy Statement which appears on its website. THURSDAY EDITION CHIEF JUSTICE UPHOLDS BAN AGAINST TROTMAN’S ACCUSER The 22-year-old man who moved to challenge the injunction that bars him from publishing in the print or electronic media, any material relating to allegations made against Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, saw his efforts rejected in court Wednesday. Chief Justice (Ag) Ian Chang was unmoved by the petition Johnny Antony Welshman submitted against the week-old injunction and advised that he seek professional assistance. Welshman is the man who is accusing the Speaker of sexually molesting him over ten years ago; an allegation which Trotman has vehemently denied, asserting that it is a political plot. An injunction was granted on Monday, September 22, by the Chief Justice (Ag) ordering Welshman to remove all malicious content from his Facebook page. Welshman moved to the High Court Wednesday however, seeking to have the injunction filed against him by Trotman, discharged. The Chief Justice Wednesday ruled that the injunction, which prevents Welshman from publishing or

speaking about the issue in the public or on his Facebook Page, stays. Welshman represented himself in the case while Trotman’s attorney, Nigel Hughes was present. APNU STANDS BY AFC ON NO- CONFIDENCE MOTION There seems to be nothing in the way to hamper the safety of the No-Confidence Motion which the Alliance For Change (AFC) tabled against the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Administration. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has given all assurances that it will vote in favour of the Motion. APNU and the AFC met Wednesday at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and discussed matters relating to the Motion. At that meeting APNU re-affirmed its unwavering commitment to passing the vote of no confidence against the government at the earliest sitting of the National Assembly. Those who attended the meeting on behalf of the AFC included Party Leader Khemraj Ramjattan, Vice-Chairman, Moses Nagamootoo, Catherine Hughes (Party Whip) and General Secretary David Patterson. APNU’s delegation comprised Chairman and Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, Basil Williams (Deputy Speaker), Amna Ally (Opposition Chief Whip), Ronald Bulkan and Winston Felix. FRIDAY EDITION LANDLINES RATES INCREASE…CONSUMER BODYACCUSES GT&T OF HIDING PROFITS An application by the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) to substantially increase its landline charges and rates has been totally rejected by the Guyana Consumer Association (GCA). As a matter of fact, the advocacy body said in its reply to ongoing hearings before the regulatory Public Utilities Commission (PUC), the possibilities must be examined for the present charges and rates being reduced. In rejecting the application, GCA warned that any increases at this time could disturb or distort the market as the telecommunication industry is about to be liberalized, allowing new players to enter. The consumer group recommended that “the PUC should ensure that it is in no

House Speaker, Raphael Trotman way instrumental in disturbing or distorting the flow of the free market of which telecommunication liberalization is a manifestation and to which policy the Government of Guyana is committed. To hastily inject rates produced by a monopoly regimen into a newly liberalized industry would be a distortion, in that it attempts to forestall the free market from shaping rates.” The body also accused GT&T of transferring its fibre optic, undersea cable, to a foreign company in an “involuted” manner. “Whatever was the transaction, there was a huge money value for this cable, a proportion of which must be allocated to landline revenues.” GT&T has reportedly spent US$30M for the cable – a project it shares with Suriname. “Gains from depreciation must be credited to landline revenues. The landline assets are old and depreciated and there has been little or no capitalization. The Guyanese consumer pays the 15% rate of return on these fully depreciated assets and since the landline assets book value is nil, it means the company is harvesting super profits on the landline. These super profits monies must be credited to the landline revenues.” According to GT&T’s application made earlier this year, the US-owned company wanted increases in charges for application, installations, transfers, additional jacks, wake-up call, 3-way, voicemails, call forwarding, reconnection fees, and for peak and non-peak calls. The rates range between 20-60 percent. SATURDAY EDITION NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION… ANYDELAYPERMITTED BY THE SPEAKER WOULD NOT FIND FAVOUR WITH APNU GREENIDGE Even as members of the Parliament Office gear to

continue the business of the National Assembly when it comes out of recess, House Speaker, Raphael Trotman, has hinted to the possibility of the debate over the NoConfidence Motion being “put-off” for months. This is because there are a number of unresolved matters which Members of Parliament still have to address. But some opposition members have firmly asserted that any delay permitted by the House Speaker over the No-Confidence motion, would not be taken in good faith. Following the Speaker’s comments at a press conference last Tuesday, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) had further talks on the No-Confidence motion and the APNU subsequently sought to

reassure the public that it is in full support of the motion. At a press conference held Friday at his Hadfield Street headquarters, APNU Leader, David Granger, was asked whether he was at all concerned by the Speaker’s statements on the possibility of the delay. He said, “I don’t know what he (Trotman) means, I don’t know what he means.” APNU’s Shadow Minister of Labour, Basil Williams, then questioned, “He actually said that? Or are you drawing an inference?” This publication and other media operatives then reassured him that, that is essentially what the Speaker had said. The APNU leader eventually expressed that the Speaker’s “words” would suggest, in a narrow interpretation, that the debate could last much longer than

“people anticipate but I don’t know what it means. I don’t know if it’s two weeks or a month or a year; I cannot say.” While the APNU Leader held this position, his Shadow Finance Minister, Carl Greenidge, in an interview with this publication, was most expressive on the matter. Greenidge told Kaieteur News that he is puzzled as to how Trotman arrived at that conclusion. Greenidge said that it is important for one to consider how the Speaker finds it possible to think of permitting a debate on the Motion to last months or even allowing any delays. “I do not see how it could be acceptable. I can say without fear of contradiction that even a month long debate will not find favour with APNU.”

Erectile dysfunction in diabetics Erectile dysfunction is a common problem experienced among diabetic men. This is the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sex. This usually causes problems in many relationships and can leave you and your partner feeling frustrated and discouraged. Erectile dysfunction is not the end of life and there are many prevention strategies and treatment options that can help to better the life of diabetic men who are suffering from it. It can stem from problems caused by poor long-term blood sugar control, which damages nerves and blood vessels. Erectile dysfunction can also be linked to other conditions common in men with diabetes, such as high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. Below are some steps to cope with erectile dysfunction — and get your sex life back on track. Men are sometimes ashamed to discuss erectile dysfunction with their doctor. It is time to stop being shy and talk to your doctor. · Tell your doctor what’s going on. Your doctor will consider underlying causes of your erectile dysfunction, and can give you information about medication and other erectile dysfunction treatments. Find out your options. · Ask what you need to do to control diabetes. Careful blood sugar control can prevent nerve and blood vessel damage that can lead to erectile dysfunction. Ask your doctor if you’re taking the right steps to manage

Dr. Kumar Sukhraj your diabetes. · Ask about other health problems. It’s common for men with diabetes to have other chronic conditions that can cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. Work with your doctor to make sure you’re addressing these other health problems. · Check your medications. Ask your doctor if you’re taking any medications that may be worsening your erectile problems, such as drugs used to treat depression or high blood pressure. Making a change to your medications may help. · Seek counselling. Anxiety and stress can worsen erectile dysfunction. A psychologist or other mental health provider can help you find ways to ease your stress level. A number of erectile dysfunction treatments are available. Ask your doctor to recommend a good one for you. Making good lifestyle choices can help a person to

deal with erectile dysfunction. A few changes can make big differences in your life. Try these approaches to improve erectile dysfunction and your overall health: · Stop smoking. Tobacco use, including smoking, narrows your blood vessels, which can lead to or worsen erectile dysfunction. Smoking can also decrease levels of the chemical nitric oxide, which signals your body to allow blood flow to your penis. · Limit how much alcohol you drink. Drinking too much alcohol — more than two drinks a day — can damage your blood vessels and worsen erectile dysfunction. · Lower your stress level. Stress can reduce your erections. Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. · Get regular exercise. Regular exercise can increase blood flow, improve your mood and energy levels, and reduce stress. If you haven’t exercised for a while, start with something easy, such as a daily walk. · Fight fatigue. If you’re well rested, you’re less likely to struggle with erectile dysfunction. Please feel free to send an email to kumarsukhraj@yahoo.com or call 6228032 for further enquiry and discussion on the topic. Patient education plays an important part in the diagnosis and management of diabetes and any other illness. Please look forward for a continuation of the discussion on health issues in the next publication

Patients tend to listen more to female doctors Women are more likely to heed guidance on nutrition, exercise and weight loss when it comes from doctors who are female, rather than male, a new study suggests. The research also found that patients, regardless of gender, more readily tuned into advice about nutrition and exercise from female physicians. Dr. Anne-Cecile Schieber, from the University of Toulouse III in Toulouse, France, led a team that examined how gender influenced the relationship between 585 patients and 27 general-practice doctors in three regions in France. The researchers hypothesized that patients might be more inclined to trust doctors of the same gender. But the findings indicate that interpersonal skills may play more of a role than gender in promoting physician-patient trust. “We think it’s more about communications training then it is about hiring practices,” research scientist Julie Schmittdiel told Reuters Health. “It’s not about gender so much as it’s about communication and enhancing communication.” Schmittdiel has done similar studies for the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research. She was not involved with the current analysis. The new study suggests that some male doctors could learn a thing or two from female physicians, at least when it comes to dispensing advice on

nutrition and exercise. R e s e a r c h e r s independently asked adult patients and their doctors the same set of questions immediately after office visits. Questions included information and advice given about weight, physical activity and nutrition. Female doctors and both their male and female patients tended to agree about the advice on nutrition, exercise and weightloss, according to the study published in Family Practice. Men with male doctors were nearly four times more likely than men with female doctors to disagree with them about nutrition, the study found. And men with male doctors were twice as likely to disagree with them as with female doctors about exercise, the researchers found. The only place where

male doctors performed as well as their female colleagues was in counseling about weight loss with male patients. Regardless of the gender of the physician, 91 percent of male patients agreed with their doctors on weight-loss advice, the study found. Female patients with female doctors agreed with their physician’s weight-loss advice 93 percent of the time. But female patients with male doctors agreed only 85.5 percent of the time, the study says. “Training medical students and doctors on delivering information, showing respect, supporting patient involvement, gaining social and cultural competence, supporting selfreflection and self-awareness, and developing skills, capacities and capabilities to perceive existing gender differences and on incorporating these into their decisions and actions could help them to provide higher quality of care to each patient, irrespective of their gender,” the study concludes. Based on prior research, the authors suggest that female doctors may be more collaborative with patients, and male doctors may be more dominant. Earlier studies have shown that women doctors report feeling more comfortable discussing personal and sensitive issues than their male counterparts do, the authors write.

Green offices make employees happier and more productive: study People who work in a “green” office, literally surrounded by plants, are happier than people in “lean” offices without live foliage, suggests a new study. In experiments, UK researchers found that enriching a lean office with potted plants could increase productivity by 15 percent. “Whatever the environment is generally speaking, it’s a better environment if it’s enriched and plants are a very costeffective way of enriching your space,” Craig Knight of the University of Exeter told Reuters Health. Knight, one of the study’s authors, said the idea behind a so-called lean office space is that clearing everything from the work surface except items needed for work is supposed to reduce distractions, which should then lead to better productivity. But when you

look at that lean office space idea through any scientific lens, psychological, biological, or neuroscientific - the idea doesn’t hold any water at all, he said. “There is no animal on the planet that thrives in a lean space, whether it’s an ant or a gorilla, it doesn’t matter, if you put anything in a lean space it suffers,” Knight said. Green spaces, on the other hand, are thought to improve workers’ concentration and productivity by a number of mechanisms, Knight and his colleagues write in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied. Because past studies to document that effect suffered from limitations, Knight’s team set out to compare the impact of lean versus green office spaces in three separate experiments performed in real offices in the UK and The

Netherlands. In the first study, 34 participants worked in a collective lean space without plants and 33 participants worked at desks with direct views of at least 2 plants from each desk. Both work spaces were on the same floor in a central London office building. After three weeks, the participants answered questionnaires to measure their perceptions of air quality, concentration, workplace satisfaction and productivity. The researchers found that participants in the green office reported increased workplace satisfaction, and better concentration and perceived air quality compared to the workers in the lean space. The authors noted, however, that satisfaction in the lean workspace also improved over the three weeks, possibly because

participants in the lean office space could have been exposed to the plants when they walked by the green office space. The second study was similar to the first, but the green and lean office spaces were on separate floors of the same building and the workers spent a longer time in the experimental settings. Twenty one participants were assigned to the lean office space and 60 were put into the green office. All participants filled out questionnaires at the beginning of the study, two weeks later and again at 3.5 months. The researchers also analyzed company measures of productivity for 48 of the participants. Similar to the first study, people in the green office space reported increased workplace satisfaction, but the participants in the lean space

did not. There was no apparent impact on productivity in this study, but the authors say productivity was difficult to measure in this office where most work was done by talking to customers on the phone. So the third study focused on productivity, with 17 participants working in a lean office and 16 in a green office. People in each office space completed specific tasks and the researchers timed them with stopwatches. The participants who worked in the green space completed the tasks more quickly than those in the lean space and did not have any more errors. Productivity increased by about 15 percent in the green office. The authors suggest that adding plants to an office makes employees more physically, cognitively and

emotionally involved in their work. Knight said that plants are good at cleaning the air and their presence can make “a fantastic difference psychologically.” Charlie Hall, chair of horticultural sciences at Texas A&M University in College Station, said that adding plants could improve an office in several ways. “The first has to do with just the simple production of oxygen and the removal of volatile organic compounds that sometimes exist in the workplace,” said Hall, who wasn’t involved in the study. Volatile organic compounds in the form of formaldehyde, benzene and hexane are often given off by paints and carpeting and plants help to scrub those compounds out of the air, he told Reuters Health. Hall said a second benefit is the ability of plants to remove carbon dioxide from the air.

Comedy actor Adam Sandler UK legalises music, film signs four-film deal with Netflix and e-book back-ups Netflix Inc said on Thursday that comedian and actor Adam Sandler has signed a deal to star in and produce four films that will be shown exclusively on the video-streaming service. The deal moves Netflix, which produces the Emmywinning political thriller “House of Cards” and the comedy-drama “Orange Is the New Black,” further into original programming. “His appeal spans across viewers of all ages everybody had a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line - not just in the U.S. but all over the world,”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said in a statement. The four feature films from Sandler’s company, Happy Madison Productions, will be shown in the nearly 50 countries where Netflix is available. Brooklyn-born Sandler, 48, started his career as a stand-up comedian before joining the NBC comedy sketch show “Saturday Night Live.”His films include “Big Daddy,” “The Wedding Singer,” “Grown Ups” and this year’s “Men, Women & Children,” which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Google threatened with lawsuit over leaked celebrity photos: NY Post

A lawyer who represents about a dozen female celebrities whose private photos were posted online by hackers has threatened to sue Google Inc for failing to take the photos off its websites, according to the New York Post. Martin Singer, an entertainment industry lawyer, said in a letter on Wednesday that Google “is making millions and profiting from the victimization of women” and could be liable for over $100 million in damages, the New York Post reported on Wednesday. The letter did not say which celebrities Singer represents. Google “knows that the images are hacked stolen property, private and confidential photos and videos unlawfully obtained

and posted by pervert predators who are violating the victims’ privacy rights and basic human decency,” Singer said, according to the Post. Singer could not be reached to confirm the letter. Singer said he sent Google multiple notices of violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which requires Internet service providers to remove copyrighted material upon request, according to the report. He said that while other sites, such as Twitter Inc, had complied with the requests and removed the photos, Google was still displaying them in its search results and hosting them on its YouTube and blogspot websites. Singer demanded that

Google immediately remove all the offending images. He also asked Google to preserve records related to the images, “pending subpoenas to be issued in the up c o m i n g / pending litigation,” according to the report. “We’ve removed tens of thousands of pictures within hours of the requests being made - and we have closed hundreds of accounts,” Google said in a statement. Numerous celebrities including actresses Jennifer Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton had private pictures stored on their Apple Inc iCloud accounts stolen and posted on popular websites including 4chan and Reddit since early September.

A law has come into effect that permits UK citizens to make copies of CDs, MP3s, DVDs, Blu-rays and e-books. Consumers are allowed to keep the duplicates on local storage or in the cloud. While it is legal to make back-ups for personal use, it remains an offence to share the data with friends or family. Making such copies including ripping CDs to iTunes - had previously qualified as copyright infringement, although cases were rarely prosecuted. The changes were detailed in June, when the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) issued guidance, but had not come into effect until now. “These changes are going to bring our IP [intellectual property] laws into the 21st century,” said the minister for Intellectual Property, Baroness NevilleRolfe. “They will mean that the UK IP regime will now be responsive to the modern business environment and more flexible for consumers.” The change to the law also

allows the parody of copyright works. Previously, there has been a risk of being sued for breach of copyright if clips of films, TV shows or songs were used without consent. DRM remains There are limits to the change of rules. For instance, while consumers can copy any CD they own and use one version in the car and another at home, they cannot later sell on the original disk if they retain the duplicates of it or MP3 conversions of its songs. Users are not allowed to make recordings of streamed music or video from Spotify and Netflix, even if they subscribe to the services. Likewise, they cannot rip a rented Blu-ray, video game, ebook or other file. And while it is legal to change a purchased TV download, movie file or ebook from one format to another, retailers including Amazon, Apple and Google are still allowed to include digital rights management

software that makes this hard to achieve. “The law does not say that things have to be un-DRMed,” said Alice Enders, from the media consultancy Enders Analysis. “If anything the pressure will increase - content owners will become more concerned about selling products to consumers that isn’t ‘wrapped.’ “They don’t want their works to be copied without compensation. They want to either sell it, or rent it to you or get you on a subscription. No money comes from a copy.” She noted that unlike in most European countries, content creators were not being compensated by the UK for the extra rights. Many EU nations place a levy on sales of recordable media - such as blank DVDs, memory cards and hard disks - and some also add a charge to MP3 players and video recorders, with the proceeds passed on to the media industry.

A silent Sherlock Holmes film made in 1916 and featuring the only screen performance by William Gillette has been found in the French film archive. The film, thought lost forever, had been wrongly catalogued decades ago by staff at the Cinematique Francaise. US actor Gillette made his name as Holmes mainly on stage, bringing his trademark deerstalker and pipe to life for the first time. The movie is being restored and will be shown at a French festival next year. It is due to be premiered in the US at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival in May 2015. Gillette, who died in 1937, gave the definitive portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s

legendary sleuth during his lifetime, adopting many of the traits that have been seen since and survive to this day. He was also a playwright, and wrote the story for the 1916 film which was simply entitled Sherlock Holmes. The feature-length film contained elements from various Conan Doyle mysteries featuring the famous detective, and was presented in promotional material as being in seven acts. The version uncovered in Paris had captions in French and was ready to be colour-tinted specifically for the French market at the time. It had been mixed up with some other unrelated Sherlock material and not been labelled properly. Staff at the archive came across it while working

on an extensive project to catalogue the thousands of nitrate film reels in its collection. Tom Baker as Sherlock Holmes The pipe and deerstalker image of Holmes survived for decades, played here by Tom Baker in 1982 ˚Bryony Dixon, curator of silent film at the British Film Institute, said it was “top of the list” in the canon of missing Sherlock Holmes films, so is a “pretty exciting” find. “This also connects with Victorian theatre which is more obscure than early film. It’s exciting to get Gillette in particular. “He made Sherlock Holmes a character for the first time rather than a caricature, and it’s amazing how much we think of him was based on Gillette’s image.

From the PPP From the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends greetings to all our Muslim brothers and sisters on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. The PPP calls on all Guyanese, in particular Muslims, to use the occasion to reflect on the significance of this observance which portrays the virtues of sacrifice and obedience to the will of Allah. These are values that are universally embraced by peoples throughout the world and have served over the centuries to guide humanity along the path of righteousness and submission to the will of the Almighty. As we observe this occasion, let us spare a thought for the less fortunate

in our society and the world at large who are the victims of deprivation and want, and those who suffer from religious persecution. Unlike many parts of the world, we are truly blessed to live in a country where there is religious freedom and tolerance. Let us also embrace the lessons of faith and submission, especially at this time when there are forces in our society that seem determined to test the will and patience of the Guyanese people by seeking to trample on their democratic and constitutional rights. But, as the lessons of Eid ul Adha so forcefully bring out, justice and truth always prevail over injustice and backwardness.

From GAWU The occasion of Eid-ul-Adha is once again with us and the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) joins the nation in wishing the Muslim community amongst us a Happy and Joyous Eid-ul-Adha. The very essence of this Eid observance is derived from Abraham’s obedience in responding to divine instruction to sacrifice that which he loved the most. So sacrifice is one of the most noble of human behaviour – giving willingly in the interest of assisting one’s fellow human beings. Sacrifice for progress is needed in the Guyana of today. GAWU sees the need for give-and-take and compromise in national life and undertaken in terms of national development which will see our citizens being all the winners. Sacrifice is often a forerunner and an ingredient for success at several significant levels, be it at the personal, community and national levels. This significant occasion that will be celebrated by our Islamic community must also serve to inspire our people in the higher causes of service and obedience in the national interest. Happy Eid-ul-Adha

From FITUG

Just basic research reveals that Eid-ul-Adha is a Muslim observance meant to celebrate and “honour the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his first son Ishamael as an act of obedience to God”. God/Allah did intervene at a strategic moment to save Ibrahim his Son. Confident of Ibrahim’s obedience and faith, Allah accepted a ram as a form of symbolic sacrifice indeed. As Guyanese share in the symbolism of Muslims sharing their Eid-ul-Adha sacrifice, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) joins the faithful in the observance but urges all Guyanese to reflect on some of the deeper significance of this end of Haji Eid. Concepts such as obedience and sacrifice are paramount, but given current unfortunate realities in the Arabic/Islamic Middle East of our world, FITUG discovers another potentiallyconstructive element to this

festival. It lies in the fact that both Sunni and Shite Muslims embrace Eid-ul-Adha which is straight from their Holy Book of Guidance, the Quran (Second Sura). It is to be hoped that this Eid will inspire more divine compassion to end the inter-religious, landgrabbing conflicts between the two sets of Muslims world-wide. Here in Guyana, the similarities between the Christian and Islamic versions of Ibrahim/ Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son on God’s comment and altar and their obedience, resulting in God’s reprieve are all universal testimonies to the virtues of faith and sacrifice. As we all appreciate the symbolism, albeit in practical generosity, of the gifts of sacrificial meats, let us resolve to join the Muslim community, in both celebration and resolve, in maintaining peace and the gift of giving. Eid Mubarak!

& the Shaheed Boys & Girls Orphanages

The Executive of the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman (GUSIA) and the Board of the Shaheed Boys and Girls Orphanages take the opportunity to extend to our Muslim Community and the Guyanese Nation, greetings on the occasion of Eid-ul Azha. This day, which observes the great sacrifice of the great friend of Allah – Prophet Ibrahim (AS), is a day which must fill the hearts of mankind

with great joy. The Prophet Ibrahim was a person who translated in his life qualities that are associated with great character. Generations of nations are preserved by his teachings. Islam recognizes the superiority of the actions of this great Prophet by commanding Muslims to emulate these acts. The establishment of progressive nations and successful

From ACIC Islam celebrates two great festivals annually, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. The first is the great festival that follows the month of Ramadan and the second occurs about two months later, when an animal is sacrificed in commemoration of the steadfastness of Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael. This festival, incorporated in the great pilgrimage to Mecca, is also observed all over the Muslim world at the same time. The underlying importance of this festival is the spirit of sacrifice (qurbani) in memory of Prophet Abraham’s great act of faith many centuries ago. Eid-ul-Adha is a time for Muslims to learn the value of self-denial by making a sacrifice of the things we love, to God almighty. Prophet Abraham’s great act of submission is thus regarded solely as an example of genuine surrender to the will of God and is to be followed as such. Today, more than ever, human beings need to incorporate the lessons of this great sacrifice into our lives.

From the AFC The leadership and members of the Alliance For Change express warmest greetings to the entire Muslim community on the occassion of Eid-ul-Adha. This auspicious occasion marks a point of great significance in the Muslim calendar. Eid-ul-Adha is a message of obedience to our Creator. It teaches us to appreciate the value of sacrifice. The message of Eid-ulAdha is not only for the Muslim communiy but for people of all faiths. Eid Mubarak to all Guyanese

Let us not forget our poor and needy brothers and sisters as we observe this festival, by sharing our sacrificial offerings with them. It is our sincere hope and prayer that we are able to affirm the unity possible among Muslims, and between Muslims and other religions. We face the challenges of living in a globalized world where there is greater alienation and distance between classes of individuals based on economics and education. We must work hand in hand with people who have faith in the essential goodness of humankind.

people are results of adherence to the guidance of great prophets as Prophet Ibrahim. We join with Muslims throughout the world to remind all of the eminence and virtues of this great but honorable leader of mankind and to echo the feelings of love for this great Prophet of Allah and his beloved son, Ishmail.

In this age of political instability, ethnic and racial violence, greed, materialism and uncertainties, the selfless actions and willingness to sacrifice that which he loved best, still remain a vivid example of qualities in a human that allows him to tower over all others. We join to express joy and goodness on this special occasion of Eid ul Azha.

LAND FOR SALE

Police have interviewed the Ministry of Health’s Permanent Secretary, Leslie Cadogan, as part of the investigations into the fraud allegations against Surendra Engineering Company Limited (SECL). The Indian contractor ran into problems with its US$18M contract to build a specialty hospital at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, terminated last month. Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, yesterday confirmed that all documents pertaining to alleged fraud have been handed over to Crime Chief, Leslie James. “We…the Attorney General’s office…are preparing legal proceedings to sue for breach of contract. We have already sent a letter to the contractor terminating the contract.” According to Nandlall, the Permanent Secretary is the official who executed the contract on behalf of Government. With the project in limbo, Government has since asked for a meeting with India’s Ex-Im Bank which is funding the initiative, the Minister confirmed. He was unable to say when this meeting would take place. Early last month, Government said it has moved to terminate Surendra’s contract, along

Health Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Leslie Cadogan

Attorney General, Anil Nandlall

with filing a civil court case and involving the police. An active assessment was also being conducted into another controversial deal involving the supply of 14 drainage pumps to the tune of US$4M. Its Managing Director, Brijen Parikh, had reportedly skipped the country, leaving one sub-contractor, BK International, out-of-pocket for over $400M in outstanding monies for the specialty hospital project. Government has been facing fire for Surendra after that company was first granted the pump contract, but it was discovered that it had no experience in that area. Government also gave its blessings for the US$18M specialty hospital to Surendra. Again, there was no history of the company building hospitals. One Indian company, Fedders Lloyd Corporation

Limited, had objected, and filed a complaint in India’s Parliament and with India’s EX-IM Bank. Both Nandlall and Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, had during a press conference last month defended the award of the contract. They said that it was above board. Regarding the decision to terminate the hospital contract, the Ministers said that the troubles all started when Surendra’s security bond, a requirement for state contracts, expired in March. The bond, which is like a bank guarantee, is necessary in case something goes wrong and Government has to recoup monies. Initially, when the contract was awarded in 2012, Surendra submitted a bond from Caricom Insurance, a local company. However, the company refused to renew the bond when it expired in March. Surendra

then submitted a bond purportedly from Worldwide Banker Limited, a company from Trinidad. According to Nandlall, the bond documents aroused suspicions because they bore a notary seal, something not normal on bonds. Surendra when questioned then submitted another bond, this time from the Central Bank of Trinidad. The Health Ministry said that up to March of this year, it had paid up to US$4.2M to Surendra, with US$3.6M being mobilization fees. Checks were made with the Central Bank in Trinidad which dropped the bombshell…the bond was not from them. The company was called in for meetings and as questions were asked, Surendra ceased work on the Turkeyen site in mid-June. Nandlall made it clear that Government has lost all confidence in Surendra and the fact that complaints were coming in that it owed subcontractors, including BK International, only made matters worse. Surendra itself seemed to have been cutting corners, even resisting attempts to have site insurance in place, Government officials are quoted as saying. Nandlall last month said that both the Ministry of Agriculture and the Office of the President are reviewing the US$4M pump contract with Government. However, the official declined to go into details, saying it was too early.

CIIP employs 54 persons in... (From page 13) priority areas the CEWs will focus on are clearing of vegetation from cemeteries and community drains, and weeding parapets. According to the Chairperson of the Zeelust/Rosignol NDC, Padmini Jagnandan, the NDC has to provide quality service to about 6,000 households, a task that is hindered by the lack of human and financial resources. She noted that the CIIP workers would be of great help to the NDC. “There are many community drains to clean and parapets to weed. There are five villages

in this NDC that have similar needs and the CIIP workers could focus on those areas,” Jagnandan said. Officials of Seafield/Tempie NDC also expressed gratitude for the assistance from CIIP. Low tax collection has limited the NDC’s ability to hire fulltime employees. As such, basic enhancement works, including cleaning of drains in the 12 villages of the NDC, are not done regularly. Overseer of Seafield/Tempie NDC, Alexis McFarlane, related that cleaning of internal drains is a major priority of the NDC, particularly with the upcoming rainy season.

Canada-based sisters are latest targets of airport bandits Just an hour after arriving in Guyana, two Canada-based sisters were robbed and beaten at gunpoint by bandits who had apparently trailed them from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Estel Latchman and her sister, Gloria Stevenson, were attacked at around 03.00hrs on Wednesday while sitting in a taxi outside a relative’s home at Leonara, West Coast Demerara. Mrs. Latchman said that she was gun-butted repeatedly on the head after she refused to hand over her bag. She suffered a gash which required six stitches. The robbers escaped in a car with the women’s handbags, which contained $1,500 (Canadian), cameras, cell phones, bank cards and

travel documents. Mrs. Latchman told Kaieteur News that she and her sister arrived in Guyana at around 02.05 hrs on Wednesday, and were picked up by a taxi driver whose services she had previously used. The driver took them to a relative’s home at Leonara, where a wake was being held. However, when they arrived at around 03.00 hrs, the guests had left and the gate was shut. “We stopped and the driver was phoning (the relative) for the gate to be opened when somebody smashed the window by the driver’s side and pulled him out,” Mrs. Latchman said. She was sitting in the back seat and another man, also with a handgun, came to her

Jamaica Gleaner - Almost 143 million Brazilians will vote today to elect a new Brazilian president. Electors will also vote to renew the Federal Congress, one third of the Federal Senate, and Governors and State Assemblies of all 26 States and the Federal District. This year, the voters list comprises 337,68 per cent more names that it did in the 2010 general

election. The Brazilian Embassy says voters abroad can only vote on the presidential elections and polling stations will be available at its Kingston offices.

window and tried to grab her bag. “All they were saying is don’t scream or we will shoot, but we were screaming. I was not letting go of my bag and he was hitting me in the head and on my hands and I began to get weak.” She eventually released her bag, and the bandits reportedly entered a nearby car and headed east up the West Coast Demerara public road. Mrs. Latchman said she was drenched in blood after her ordeal. The Canada-based Guyanese said she was upset that ranks from the Leonora Police Station never visited

the scene. Instead, the victims were told to make a report at the station. The injured woman was treated at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. Kaieteur News was told that that police questioned the driver for several hours before releasing him. A senior police official told Kaieteur News that one of the victims gave officials a partial licence number of a greycoloured vehicle in which the robbers allegedly escaped. Police also attempted to identify the vehicle from security cameras at the Demerara Harbour Bridge. However, the images were too

poor to be of any use to investigators. Police have vowed to smash gangs that have been repeatedly targeting travelers to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Just recently, Pastor Sewnauth Poonalall of the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church was gunbutted and robbed shortly after returning from the airport with some overseas guests.

U.S. judge orders Argentina to stop servicing exchange bonds locally NEW YORK (Reuters) A U.S. judge said on Friday Argentina must reverse the steps it has taken to evade his orders in a longstanding dispute with hedge funds over debt the country defaulted on in 2002. In a rare move, District Judge Thomas Griesa held Argentina in contempt earlier this week, saying its attempts to pay holders of the bonds it restructured in 2005 and 2010 debt swaps locally were “illegal.” The judge prevented Argentina in June from making a coupon payment to exchange bondholders because of his earlier ruling that the South American country could only do so if it paid the U.S. “holdout” funds, who rejected the swaps, at the same time. The move plunged Latin America’s third largest economy into its second default in 12 years. Leftist President Cristina Fernandez’s government responded by enacting a law removing trustee Bank of New York Mellon Corp and allowing the country to make payments locally to keep the

money beyond Griesa’s reach. “Argentina will need to reverse entirely the steps which it has taken constituting the contempt, including, but not limited to, re-affirming the role of The Bank of New York Mellon as the indenture trustee,” Griesa said in an order, noting this was what it would take to purge his contempt finding. Defiant, the country this week deposited a $161 million bond interest payment with a newly appointed local trustee, state-controlled Nacion Fideicomisos. Griesa, who has overseen litigation in New York over

Argentina’s debt for years, said on Friday the country must “(withdraw) any purported authorization of Nacion Fideicomisos, S.A. to act as the indenture trustee.” The judge’s decision to hold a foreign government in civil contempt of court is a rare but not unprecedented move. In typical cases, U.S. judges can hold parties in contempt and issue sanctions to force compliance. The hedge funds had proposed a daily fine of $50,000. However, Argentina might simply ignore any monetary sanction. Griesa has not set a specific schedule to consider sanctions.

Jamaica Gleaner - The PAN American Health Organization (PAHO) is reporting at least 113 suspected chikungunyarelated deaths in the Caribbean, mainly due to complications from other illnesses. Jamaica has recorded at least two deaths suspected to be related to the virus, which has a fatality rate of less than one per cent. Earlier last week, sevenyear-old Xavier Miller, a Mona Primary School student from St Andrew, and 14-yearold Azee Baker, a St Jago High

School student from St Catherine, died after contracting the chikungunya virus (chik-V). According to the PAHO data, 55 deaths have been linked to the chik-V outbreak in Martinique since last December, when the disease was first detected in the Americas and the Caribbean. Forty-nine deaths were reported in Guadeloupe, six in the Dominican Republic, and three in St Maarten. Puerto Rico is now investigating whether two recent deaths were related to the virus. Health authorities said

although all the victims were infected with the virus, chikungunya may not have been the main cause of death. The victims were reported to have other illnesses, which caused complications. The Caribbean Public Health Agency said a total of 644,686 suspected and 9,640 confirmed chikungunya cases have been reported in the region as of September 8. Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Symptoms include high fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, rash, vomiting and diarrhoea. There is no specific treatment, but medications can be used to reduce the symptoms. Health authorities continue to emphasise the importance of taking measures to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes, especially at this time of the year, the peak transmission season in the Caribbean due to increased rainfall. Some 850,000 people in the Americas have contracted dengue, which is spread by the same mosquitoes, and 470 have died from the virus in 2014, PAHO said.

Gangsters make good on threats-Granny shot 10 times Trinidad Guardian - A 57-year-old mother of six and grandmother of eight was chased by two masked gunmen and shot 10 times Friday, moments after she left her St Paul Street, Port-of-Spain apartment complex on an errand. The attack was not the first against Marlene Grant, but they all came, neighbours say, because she had the audacity to stand up to gangsters in her community. Grant is the elder sister of entertainer Curtis “General Grant” Grant and great aunt of Tecia Henry, who was killed in 2009. According to police reports, Grant had just stepped out of her St Paul Street apartment around 8.45 am when two masked gunmen approached her and opened fire. Grant ran a short distance away but fell after being shot in the leg. The gunmen then stood over her and shot her several times, including twice in the head. Her killers then escaped. She was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The woman lived less than a stone’s throw away from the Besson Street Police Station, which was reportedly shot at last week following a triple murder in Laventille. Speaking with the media at the scene Friday, relatives said Grant, a CommunityBased Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (Cepep) worker, was vocal against the criminality in the community,

Ferguson warns against trips to sections of Africa

Jamaica Observer - With discovery of one Ebola virus case in the United States, health minister Dr Fenton Ferguson is again warning members of the entertainment fraternity to stay away from the affected countries. “If it is not essential travel, then just don’t go!” Ferguson said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer Friday. “I know there are many entertainers who say it is a matter of income or they are tied to a contract. But we simply can’t put a country at risk for personal gain,” he continued. There are no Ebola cases in Jamaica. In recent times, several entertainers have made the trek to Africa. Reggae singer Luciano is slated to perform in Malawi on October 19. According to Malawi Nyasa Times newspaper, he has other African gigs in October but it did not state where. Singers Chris Martin and Alaine also went in ‘the Motherland’. The health minister said plans to effectively deal with the threat of the virus will be discussed at Cabinet level tomorrow, and as such he was not in a position to divulge the details of government’s plans at this time. Ferguson was, however, able to share that the Ministry of National Security, through the immigration department,

will become more vigilant, monitoring the travel history of persons coming into the country. “The decision on how persons who, based on their travel history, will be treated is to be discussed at Cabinet. We have already set up an area at the Norman Manley International Airport for screening, and an isolation area at one of the country’s public hospitals,” he said. The affected countries in West Africa include Senegal, Sierra Leone, The Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia. On Tuesday, the United States confirmed its first case in Texas. The disease, according to the World Health Organisation, has killed more than 3,000 people.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with blood, and other bodily fluids such as stool, saliva, urine and semen of infected persons. In August, the Government, through the Ministry of Health, issued an advisory to entertainers and other Jamaicans travelling to sections of West Africa. Meanwhile, Ferguson said there are no plans to restrict public gatherings, such as concerts and stage shows, in light of the outbreak of chikungunya. “We are still not at a critical stage. At this point, there is no need to take such action. But the action to combat chik-v is a work in progress, and if we have to, we will take tough decisions,” the minister indicated.

Twelve river deaths recorded within first half of the year The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has recorded 12 deaths caused by marine mishaps during the first half of the year. According to MARAD, accidents and other incidents involving marine vessels during the first half of the year also resulted in 13 persons being injured while another eight were lost at sea. The figures were as a result of two boat collisions, and nine incidents, two of which were attacks of pirates on fishermen and other marine workers. It was also noted that most of the marine incidents/ accidents took place in the Corentyne and Mazaruni Rivers. The chart showed that the eight river mishaps, which took place between January and July, claimed the lives of nine persons. The victims were

Ryan Browne, Hassan David, Ronald Ewart Newark, Seepersaud Roopchand, Andrew Gopie and Orlando Billy Graham. Three river fatalities were recorded in August. The victims include five-year-old Venezuela resident Bhisham Munilall, and Jose Henrique Salvao De Souza also of Venezuela, and Nicola Mayers of Riverview, Essequibo. According to MARAD, two fishing vessels were attacked during the first half of the year. Both attacks took place in the Corentyne River. During the first attack which occurred on July 8, Andrew Gopie, 41, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara was killed and his colleagues Chandrapaul Jallim, Raymond Gomes and Vinesh Drunarine are still missing. Feroze Hack was the

only survivor of that incident. Just a few days later, another group of fishermen was attacked, tied up and robbed of their belongings at sea. Two persons survived that attack while three remain

lost at sea. The survivors include Omesh Derhup and Naresh Persaud. The missing men are Ramesh Persaud, Deochand Ravindranauth and Prakash (only name given). On August 12, a Guyana Registered Motor Tank capsized at the mouth of the Corentyne River. Four persons were aboard the vessel; only two, Leon Augustus Persaud and Anthony Sukhdeo, survived.

The vessel’s captain Gainan Rickiram and crew member Constantine Patrick are still lost at sea. MARAD notes that investigations are still continuing into the matter. Last month, less than 24 hours after Guyana joined the rest of the world in the observance of International Maritime Day, female Brazilian, Gisele Vieria Salis was killed after two boats collided while travelling in the vicinity of All

Boys in the Mazaruni River. Last year, the department recorded 37 deaths, some resulting from boat collisions and from acts of piracy. Last year, too, research indicated that the Pomeroon and Mazaruni Rivers were the deadliest channels, at one time recording a combined total of 19 river fatalities in two weeks. However, it was reported that Maritime officials had conducted additional work in regions to target safety defaulters and curb the incidence of river accidents. MARAD Public Relations Officer, Akousa Mc Pherson, said that the campaign has since intensified to promote safety and reduce the incidence of river causalities. She said that as part of its efforts, MARAD is continuing distribution of safety gear (lifejackets) but also embarked on additional activities to educate boat operators in various aspects of marine safety. Within recent years, the campaign has targeted areas in Bartica, Supenaam and Charity, Georgetown, and Vreed-en-Hoop and Parika. Maritime officials have also moved to enforce adequate licensing and the proper use of life jackets for boat operators in the Mahaicony River.

“Great opportunities for West Indies in India!” As suggested by the strangely silent Caribbean Single Market & Economy (CSME), this West Indies tour to India 2014, e s p e c i a l l y t h e O D I ’s , presents tremendous opportunities for enhancement, progress and one-ness, a good time to do a litmus test as to where exactly our team really is right now. Hopefully, WI would show more tangible positives than CSME has done to date. To debate CSME’s silence would take much more than words and pages allow, but here is one question: What has happened to

that one-border situation that temporarily existed for ICC World Cup 2007 here in the Caribbean? Travel in the Caribbean has become even more officious and confused than ever! Case in point: Travelling from St. Kitts to St. Vincent recently, all passengers had to pass through airports’ security and passport control four times, yet none of the passengers left any airport, except in airplanes bound to another airport while trying to get to SVG; an amazing exercise in total confusion! Anyway, the euphoria

of beating Bangladesh in Te s t s w h i l e p l a y i n g i t s 500th Test must have worn off by now, but, continuing this week, WI are on a tight schedule, one culminating in ICC World Cup 2015. To steal a phrase from calypsonian-turnedpreacher Christopher Tambu’s 1989 hit, “the journey now start” for WI cricketers if they want to win ICC W-C 2015. This one is quite tough but has a definite end! Out of adversities, and successes, come both hopes and better possibilities. One could only win if one plays well. Quitters never win. WI

must fight India to the very end of these ODI’s! Desmond Haynes and WI manager in India, Sir Richie Richardson, are both correct. WI are on the way up, but before that upward journey could continue, real stability is necessary in the first instance. I m m e d i a t e l y, two suggested negatives have hit WI, situations that they must somehow overcome. Firstly, prolific lefthander Chris Gayle; 258 ODI’s, 8810 runs, avg. 37.33, along with 158 wickets, economy rate a surprisingly meagre 4.75; will be missed at the top of the order for these ODI’s, both because of his power hitting and tight bowling, and also for his maturity and father-like leadership. Secondly, one of WI’s most lethal bowlers, offspinner Sunil Narine, has, n o t s u r p r i s i n g l y, b e e n reported for an ‘unusual suspect action’, his second such infraction, now semi-banned for the time being. Narine, in ODI’s and T2 0 - I ’s , i s W I ’s b e s t purveyor of destructive deliveries to bamboozle the Indians. His returns, especially i n t h e g a m e ’s s h o r t e r forms, are astounding. In six Tests, he has twenty one wickets, avg. 40.52, RPO rate 3.09. But in 52 ODI’s however, he has 73 wickets, avg. 26.49, RPO 4.10. Thirty two T-20-I’s have even been better still; thirty eight wickets, avg. 17.52, RPO 5.70. Hard stuff! If Narine is not allowed to produce his usual repertoire of finger spin and doosras, it could hurt WI. But this tour is also a time for WI Test captain, Denesh Ramdin, to shine too. Because of his continuing maturity and recent h i gh-class production, the time has come for Ramdin to be named overall captain of all WI teams, in all three formats. That would allow tremendous flexibility in any team selected! I expect that Chairman of WI selectors, Clive Lloyd, and Technical Director of WI “A”, Sir Vivian Richards, both of whom led in both Tests and ODI teams as captains when WI ruled the world, would convince their cohorts to understand and accept this scenario, as this also brings more stability to each team too. Dwayne Bravo, WI’s ODI captain, is not the performer he was before injuries

seasons ago. His focus also seems to have wavered to other horizons these last years. While he could still produce excellence and exuberance occasionally, to have to fight for his very place might bring more similar efforts from him! Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels and returning-from-WIwilderness Leon Johnson all fall in the same boat. It is alright to “talk the talk” and look good. Most of these now have to “walk the walk” from that talk, producing match winning efforts. I repeat: Reputations do not get runs or wickets. To achieve those takes extremely hard work, enveloping focus and a selfishness, even in a team scenario, that is almost overwhelming. Too many of WI’s present supposed super ODI batsmen have too little to show from past inclusions! Leon Johnson is the odd man out. He has played in only three ODI’s for WI, his last against Canada in 2008. He is virtually starting over,

Colin E. H. Croft says: so he has another golden chance to enhance that opportunity given, his performance taken and attitude purveyed so well, with his debut Test v Bangladesh. With Gayle injured for ODI’s in India, Johnson has another date with his own cricketing destiny! Jason Holder, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell and Jerome Taylor comprise a bowling attack, with Narine, who could, on their day, decimate any opposition, even India’s much vaunted batting lineups. Determination, focus, patience and production will be keys to overall WI success! Enjoy!

9th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships – Individual Time Trials

Guyana failed to medal on day one By Franklin Wilson in Suriname with the compliments of Fitness Express Guyana’s most experienced Junior rider at the Caribbean level, Michael Anthony ended 6th of 22 riders when the Individual Time Trials at this the 9th edition of the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships were contested in Paramaribo, Suriname, yesterday. In very humid conditions, Anthony clocked 23 Minutes 14.344 Seconds; making his debut at this level, Alanzo Ambrose ended 14th in an event that saw the top five riders all clocking 22 plus minutes but it was Trinidad and Tobago’s Akil Campbell who stole the spotlight by copping the top podium spot in 22 Minutes 41.841 seconds. Joshua Kelly of Barbados took the silver medal in 22:43.706 with the bronze going to Curacao’s Jaspar Kiburg (22:50.531). Eugene Dirksz of Aruba clocked 22:56.080 and Bermuda’s Daniel Qately, 22:57.204 underlining the closeness of the 16 km contest. The top five riders were equipped with specialized Time Trial cycles unlike Anthony and Ambrose of Guyana. The other Guyanese rider competing yesterday and

also making his debut at this level was Berbician Andrew Hicks in the Juvenile category, he ended 15th of 22 competitors in 25 Minutes 04.984 Seconds. Winning this category was Alban Cleck of Saint Marten in 23 Minutes 20.945 Seconds to take the gold medal from Bermuda’s Tyler Smith (23:28.658) who had to settle for silver with the bronze going to Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyler Cole (23:48.704). The top female at this level turned out to be Curacao’s Lisa Groothuesheidkamp who completed the 16 km course in 25 Minutes 02.338 Seconds to take the gold medal. Diana C. Ramos Santiago of Puerto Rico claimed the silver medal in 25:08.670 w i t h A r u b a ’s C h e r l e y L i nden taking bronze in 26:07.039. A total of eleven (11) females competed. Commenting on the performances of charges, Manager/Coach Mark Sonoram said that he was satisfied that the Guyanese boys performed well given the fact that the Time Trials was never a strong area for the locals. “I think we did pretty well in the circumstances. All the riders who would have taken the top three places in the three categories contested

were equipped with specialized Time Trials machines which is already a plus for them. I know that in time we would be up there in this aspect of the sport but for now we try to do our best as the boys gain experience and they see what it is like.” Michael Anthony lost out on a medal position narrowly despite being at a disadvantage in terms of not having the right cycle like many of the other countries also but he has proven yet again that he is a quality rider. Just a few weeks ago right in Suriname at the Bigi Bergi Race Meet (four stages), Anthony not only came out as the best Under-21 rider but placed second overall, a remarkable achievement from the Linden based rider. The course was not a difficult one, the only challenges that the riders were faced with was the humidity and cross winds given that the course was close to the river. Husbands in an invited comment after the race said that it was only his third time doing a Time Trials overseas and the experience was good. Hicks noted that the winds was a challenge for him but the experience overall was good. “I am looking forward to many more events of this nature in my future career”, Hicks stated.

played at Kochi, Delhi and Vishakhapatnam on 8 October, 11 October and 14 October respectively. The team is as follows: INDIA - Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina,

Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Mohit Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Murali Vijay and Kuldeep Yadav. The squad thus comprises 14 players. R. Ashwin has been rested.

Bermuda accepts Guyana’s... From page 71 January next year and from that, the GABF will be naming players to play Bermuda, with a chance to also play at the Caribbean Championships later in the year at stake. “Local players will have an opportunity to impress the selectors with a view to representing the Golden Arrow Head,” Hinds said. In addition to the Bermuda vs Guyana fixture, it

was disclosed that the Washington DC Jammers is also expected to play in what can become a threeteam series. He said that it is not confirmed, but discussions are however underway to make that possible. The GABF President said that efforts will be made to have a national women’s team from one of the countries in the Caribbean be part of the

programme in March. This, he said, is also geared at developing women’s basketball simultaneously with the men. Guyana last played Bermuda at the 2011 CBC Championships in the Bahamas where Guyana lost 58-68. Bermuda placed fifth at the Championships while Guyana placed seventh. Guyana improved their overall placing at CBC this year, finishing fifth.

Petra Organisation/COURTS Pee Wee Football tournament

Defending champs held to nil-all stalemate Defending champions St. Pius were held to a nil-all stalemate when the 4th Annual Courts Pee Wee Football Tournament kicked off yesterday, at the Thirst Park Ground. Playing against Kitty-based J.E. Burnham, St. Pius fielding a number of new players from last year’s victorious team squandered a lot of chances in what many considered an exciting clash in roasting conditions witnessed by a f a i r- s i z e d c r o w d t h a t included teachers, parents and fans. J.E Burnham Primary created a few chances of their own, but found the St. Pius defensive line too sturdy to penetrate and eventually had to settle for a share of the points. Both teams will now have to look to next week’s engagements to improve their standings in the group. Meanwhile, in what could be considered the best game of the day, Stella Maris led by the skilful Darron Niles, who was a one-man wreckage unit squeezed past inaugural champions Marian Academy 2-1 in the final game of the day. The pintsized dynamo netted in the 22nd and 24th minute to give his school the win, while Alistair Phyll responded for

Marian Academy in the 28th minute. Meanwhile, Courts Marketing Manager Pernell Cummings shortly before declaring the tournament open said that his company is elated to once again be on board with Petra Organisation to host the event and conveyed their committed to having the tournament as long as possible. Bermuda accepts Guyana’s basketball challenge By Edison Jefford Bermuda’s Senior Men’s Basketball team will be headed for Guyana in March 2015 to play in an unprecedented three-game series against Guyana, heightening the anticipation of local players to make the national team following the National Championships. Bermuda’s Basketball Association (BBA) accepted the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) invitation to compete against its senior men’s team during March 10-15 next year as the two teams prepare for the Caribbean Championships later in June. “On behalf of the BBA, we respectfully accept the GABF invitation for our Senior Men’s National Basketball team to play against the Guyana Senior Men’s National Basketball team in Guyana,” BBA President, Gregory Todd

- To play a three-game series in March

Nigel Hinds said in his acceptance letter. The move will continue the ascendancy of basketball in Guyana under new stewardship with the GABF continuing to push for the development of players. Guyana competed in the Caribbean Championships in the British Virgin Islands

in July this year. That tour was a litmus test for the association as it continues to iron out issues aimed at finding the right combination that will bring Guyana success in the region and beyond. The GABF has subtly implied that it is eying participation in the Caribbean Championships next year after the less than obvious steps to prepare the national men’s team. “Guyana will be seeking to use the games to showcase its local basketball talent and to prepare for the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships,” GABF President, Nigel Hinds said in a release to the media yesterday. Narine withdrawn from India Tour 2014 WICB Media MUMBAI, India – The West Indies Cricket Board advised yesterday that Sunil Narine has been withdrawn from the touring party for the upcoming series against India. This came after d iscussions including Narine, the WICB Selection Panel and the West Indies Team Management. The withdrawal from the upcoming tour will allow Narine the opportunity to have his action assessed and plan his return to cricket. Speaking on the matter, WICB Chairman of Selectors Clive Lloyd noted: “I am disappointed that our best bowler could suddenly be out of the tour. I a m q u i t e d i s a p pointed about the procedure that surrounded the ‘calling’ of Sunil in the Champions Trophy tournament. These things have the potential to disrupt the team’s preparation for a critical series against India but we will have to overcome this hurdle.” L l o y d a d d e d : “ We would like some clarity from the authorities on what led to the present situation and the details as we move forward. I think there must be a better way of doing the right things.” Since his international debut in 2011 Narine has emerged as one of the leading bowlers in world cricket. He is ranked at Number

Spectacular performances at Raina century leads CSK to title police gymkhana in Berbice

The police dogs had the gathering amazed with their operation. It was long in coming and when the Police finally delivered their version of the Gymkhana to Berbice, it was fantastic stuff. The Berbice version of the annual Police Gymkhana Event was held last Sunday at the Area H ground in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne. When it was over there was not one unsatisfied patron who thronged the arena to witness some daring and acrobatic displays put on by members of the Guyana police force and riders from the Guyana Dirt Biking association. A large crowd

was on hand as Berbicians came out in their numbers to witness the displays that were a feature of the day. Patrons were able to see policing with a difference as some of the performers and performances were impressive. From the 10:00am start with the Bikers warming up, those in attendance were assured that they were in for a treat. The gymkhana, which is a regular feature on the force’s calendar of activities, featured the various departments performing stunts and other

daring demonstrations. The dogs and horses were on display in various routines. There were the physical displays and a number of novelty events including drills, musical chairs, foot drills, late for work, Lime and spoon, needle and thread and three legged race. The bikers and the horse jumping through the fire and the dogs search and finding guns and drugs were some of the highlights on the days programme. The police military band also performed for the crowd.

ESPNcricinfo - Suresh Raina bossed a Kolkata Knight Riders attack without the banned Sunil Narine for his third T20 century to lead Chennai Super Kings to their second Champions League T20 title. Raina’s relentless hitting, especially against spin, made light of a target of 181, which was built on the back of Gautam Gambhir ’s 80. Knight Riders looked good for around 200 after a 91-run opening partnership but leftarm spinner Pawan Negi’s 5 for 22 held them back. Given the way Raina blasted six after six, even 200 might not have been enough. The defeat also halted IPL champions Knight Riders’ winning streak at 14, an Indian record and second only to Sialkot Stallions. Super Kings lost Dwayne Smith in the first over of the chase and it was all Raina after that. Almost everything Raina attempted came off. The drives raced in the gaps through the off side. The pulls disappeared behind square. The strike was turned over as if on autopilot. But it was the sixes that stood out. Raina stepped out and lofted Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav for six straight sixes. Nearly every time he left the crease, Raina deposited the ball over the boundary. He survived a stumping chance off Kuldeep on 78 and the bowler Yusuf Pathan put down a difficult, diving chance when Raina was on 88. But both those chances came after Raina had

Suresh Raina launches a six. (BCCI)

snatched the game from Knight Riders’ grasp. Knight Riders’ spinners, led by the absent Narine, had been instrumental in their march to the final but Raina never allowed them to settle down. Kuldeep, Chawla, Suryakumar Yadav and Yusuf went for a collective 1 for 137 in 13.3 overs. Raina’s hundred came off 59 balls, and he put on 118 with Brendon McCullum in 12.2 overs. The New Zealand captain was not in great touch, but swept his way to a vital 39 off 30. MS Dhoni promoted himself and hit the winning runs, but his more vital contribution had come earlier, when he won the toss and chose to field. With the dew starting to come down and both captains understandably wanting to

chase. Dhoni had said at the toss that the pitch looked better than previous Bangalore surfaces in the tournament. It proved to be a nice batting surface, and only got better for the batsmen as the bowlers progressively lost bite with the dew. Gambhir and Robin Uthappa put on 91 in under 11 overs. Uthappa’s timing was terrific yet again but Gambhir stepped up after having had a lean tournament. Pulling, cutting, steering and slogging boundaries, Gambhir raced to 80 off 52 before holing out off Ravindra Jadeja in the 17th over. Negi, playing only his second match of the tournament, had already removed Uthappa and Jacques Kallis in successive overs, deceiving both with plenty of flight and turn. With Dwayne Bravo taken for 18 runs in the 16th over and Ashish Nehra going for 20 in the 18th, Dhoni handed the 19th to Negi with R Ashwin and Mohit Sharma having an over left each. Negi gave away two runs, including a wide, in the over, and took out Manish Pandey, Ryan ten Doeshcate and Suryakumar. Yusuf took 19 more off Nehra in the 20th to make it 62 off the last five, but Raina was unstoppable in the night. Scores: Chennai Super Kings 185 for 2 (Raina 109*, McCullum 39) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 180 for 6 (Gambhir 80, Uthappa 39, Negi 5-22) by eight wickets.

Letter to the Sports Editor

Sarwan should have been selected in GCB contracted list Dear Editor, It is with much interest that I have read the list of 10 players that will be contracted by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) for the upcoming regional franchise tournament. Surprisingly former Guyana and West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan was omitted even though it was stated that he can still be bought by his country. This is already an ominous signal though to exclude him, despite his vast experience, proven track record and his desire still, to represent the West Indies. The current Chairman of the

WI selection panel Clive Lloyd has brought a breath of fresh air to the thinking policy of West Indies cricket and his faith in the ability of Marlon Samuels is a master stroke. (Samuels has been recalled to the WI team for the tour of India). I a m o f t h e f i rm opinion that the same thinking will apply to Sarwan in the near future because his talent is superior to most of the existing WI players and he will be critical towards the team’s success. Therefore I am indeed surprised that the GCB is confident enough of the

initial thought of playing without him since he may be bought by another franchise. The best that the GCB and Guyana could have done for Sarwan was to rebuild his confidence and to give him every opportunity to revitalize his career in tandem with most of his native team mates . It will be interesting enough if the GCB has another shot at claiming him. But if so, will it affect Sarwan’s confidence, given the thought process of the GCB? Yours Faithfully, Elroy Stephney.

Women in the fistic sport

A culture shock and more than just a cut eye By Michael Benjamin Those memories still linger of that night in the mid 2000s when I trooped to Base Camp Ayangana for the Guyana Defence Force Novices Boxing Championships. This is the first stage of senior amateur competition and is usually action packed by dint of the unconventional styles and rollicking slugfests. On the professional scene, Gwendolyn ‘Stealth Bomber’ O’Neil had managed to institutionalize the involvement of the ‘fairer sex’ and had become a household name just after she had defeated American, Kathy Rivers in March 2004, for the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) light/heavyweight belt. Women’s boxing was quickly gaining traction and on that night in Ayangana, there were about three female bouts. While O’Neil’s feat was meritorious, the pundits, accustomed to the raging slugfests among strong muscular males, were somewhat apprehensive and refused to accept the notion of women in the fistic sport. They simply laid back and awaited the natural death of the phenomenon. Anyway, back to ringside at Camp Ayangana; the principals were ushered in the ring and introduced just before the bell rang for the first round. I

remembered those two women, eager for combat, rushing to centre ring but instead of trading punches, engaged in a fierce ‘cut eye’ battle much to the merriment of the crowd. Believe me, not a punch was thrown; the women just stood there trying to hurt each other with their fierce ‘cut eye’ exchanges while the referee, probably experiencing such ‘fury’ for the first time, stood transfixed in amusement, maybe for ten straight seconds before reasserting himself and urging the women to ‘get it on.’ What followed afterwards were fierce unconventional exchanges of slapping, pushing and tugging, interspersed with a few instances of fierce ‘cut eye’ and ‘suck teeth.’ I guess only the gloves they wore spared the crowd from a fierce round of clawing and scratching. Naturally, the crowd was amused by such theatrics but the hard core pundit felt somewhat vindicated that this new phenomenon would not last. In the meantime, O’Neil continued her trek to the top and in July 1999, travelled to Trinidad and Tobago where she stopped Kim Quashie in the first round following up that feat with a lopsided points win over Margaret ‘Chico’ Walcott in December of that same year. While the sceptics awaited

Shondell Alfred

the natural death of the phenomenon of women trading (legal) blows, the women continued their upward trek and before very long, a multitude of females had stripped their skirts, replacing them with Everlast boxing trunks. Refreshingly, what had started out as a ‘cut eye’affair, suddenly bloomed into a new but exciting prospect in the ‘square jungle’as the women transformed the boxing arena and managed to woo the crowds. There was Pamela London, who later went on to emulate O’Neil, winning the WIBC Heavyweight title from

Kaka drafted into Brazil squad SAO PAULO, Brazil (AFP) — Brazil coach Dunga on Friday drafted Kaka into his squad for upcoming friendlies with Argentina and Japan after Cruzeiro forward Ricardo Goulart pulled out through injury. Kaka, the 2007 world player of the year, returns 18 months after his last cap, having missed out on the World Cup under Dunga’s predecessor Luiz Felipe Scolari. The playmaker has not featured for the Selecao since March 2013, when Scolari included him in his squad for friendlies against Russia and Italy. Former AC Milan and Real Madrid star Kaka, 32, is currently on loan with Sao Paulo and will next year play for Major League Soccer side Orlando. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) also

revealed Dunga has called up Inter Milan defender Juan after Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Marquinhos suffered a thigh strain in his club’s Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday. Brazil flew out to Asia yesterday for a two-match tour which sees the five-time world champions take on Wo r l d C u p f i n a l i s t s

Argentina in Beijing on October 11 and Japan in Singapore three days later. Revised Brazil squad: Goalkeepers: Jefferson (Botafogo), Rafael (Napoli/ITA), Marcelo Grohe (Gremio); Defenders: David Luiz (Paris SG/FRA), Juan (Inter Milan/ITA), Gil (Corinthians), Miranda (Atletico Madrid/ESP), Filipe Luis (Chelsea/ENG), Danilo (FC Porto/POR), Mario Fernandes (CSKA Moscow/RUS), Dodo (Inter Milan/ITA); Midfielders: L u i z G u s t a v o (Wolfsburg/GER), Elias (Corinthians), Fernandinho (Manchester City/ENG), Souza (Sao Paulo), Everton Ribeiro (Cruzeiro), Willian (Chelsea/ENG), Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool/ENG), Oscar (Chelsea/ENG), Kaka (Sao Paulo); Forwards: Neymar (Barcelona/ESP), Diego Tardelli (Atletico Mineiro), Robinho (Santos).

Trinidadian Kim Quashie by 7th round TKO at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port-ofSpain, Trinidad and Tobago. Pauline, her younger sister, soon joined the fray and though she is still to win any major title, or even a major fight for that matter, she has brought a new trend of bravado and ‘braggado’ to the sport. One only needs to attend one of the press conferences and listen to Pauline outline plans of her intention on fight night to appreciate the pizzazz that she, and by extension, the ‘fairer sex’ brought to the sport. Entered Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred, whose petite physique hardly gave an inkling of the power she packed in those muscles. Alfred could pass for what Guyanese referred to as a ‘Tomboy.’ She grew up in the depressed community of Albouystown where she tried out her (legs) at athletics and her hands at karate. Her dad, Cecil ’Koker Dawg’ Alfred, boxed during the era of such stalwarts as the late Mark Harris and Compton Canzius, Michael Reid, Vernon Lewis and Kenny Bristol among others. It came as no surprise when Shondell stepped into the ring against Stepney ‘Stepping Razor’ George and pounded out a unanimous verdict in their 4 rounds featherweight fight. In June 2000, Alfred suffered her first setback when she lost by TKO (4) to IFBA champion, Doris Hack in a lightweight bout at Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax. Alfred enhanced her experience, albeit

Gwendolyn O’Neal with mixed successes, in Canada (lost by 6 round TKO to Lisa Brown) and Denmark (lost to Alexandra Mattheus) among others before her double win against Corrine DeGroot that netted her the WIBA Bantamweight title. DeGroot did not take that loss calmly saying that she was ‘done in’ which forced WIBA President, Ryan Wissow, to mandate a return bout on the grounds that the referee had failed to acknowledge a 10th round knockdown by DeGroot of Alfred. The return bout was the most definitive with Alfred unleashing a terrific left hook to DeGroot’s jaw which smothered her ambitions and left her prostrate on the canvass. Maybe, the complexity of women in the fistic sport was endorsed when Alfred left Guyana a few years ago to engage Zulina Muñoz at Foro Polanco, Mexico City, Mexico, for a 12 rounds bout for the World Boxing Council (WBC) female Super/flyweight championship belt. Pre medical tests showed that she was pregnant and the fight was not only aborted but Alfred was denied an opportunity to win another lucrative world accolade. She has since given birth to a bouncing baby girl but is yet to resume her career which once again raises the troubling issue of whether females should don gloves, one that remains troubling and contentious. Nevertheless, females are involved in the administrative aspect of the sport and their presence has indeed made a big difference. I remember Hermina April, a competent referee/judge

who has since migrated to the USA. She was a busybody on the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association and was a very good judge. Then there was another official, Faye Ann Green Haley, whose contribution was also immense. Currently, several females are within the administrative sector of the sport including Nurse Green (medic), Ramona Agard and Paulette Nurse (referees) among others. During my active days as a boxing referee I was mandated to carry a female bout and stepped into the dressing room just before the fight. I noticed that one of the women had recently had her hair done and decorated with clips. This was a new phenomenon for me and I enquired of the senior referee if this was permitted. It was not but to have the clips removed before the bout would have been tedious and time consuming so the pugilist was given some reprieve. During the bout, she received several clouts and after each one of them, a part of her well groomed hair unravelled. Around that time too, her breast protection gear also unravelled and I had the time of my life reasserting the situation back to equilibrium. There I was grabbing from braided hair to dislodged groin protector to shifting breast protector and depositing them over the ropes. In the end, the crowd enjoyed a good side show an d the laughter was raucous. Good luck for me I was spared the ‘cut eye’ but certainly was not exempted from the other culture shocks associated with women in the fistic sport.

JKA/WF Guyana Junior Karate tournament beyond expectation T h e N a t i o n a l Gymnasium (Mandela Ave) was alit with the showmanship of the junior karatekas from the Japan Karate Association/World Federation Guyana, who held their 2014 Jr. National Karate Tournament last Saturday Sept 27th. These juniors were all under the age of 12 and had a spectrum of ranks ranging from White to Brown belt levels. The parents, their friends and other JKA supporters attended in numerical fashion to witness the outcome. This tournament saw the c o m b i n e d D o j o ’s o f JKA/WF Guyana – Craig EBD, Mae’s Primary Sch. Annex (Millington St) and main Dojo National Park, Thomas Lands faced off, vying for the top places to represent their organization at the international stage in June 2015 in the USA. At kick off, surpassing the expectations of the supporters, immediate attention was drawn to the performance for Kata and Kumite, Boys and Girls as both presented balanced competition in an effort to ink their names in the results sheet to earn the top places within their respective division. Mae’s Primary School Dojo students attended a tournament for the first time and contributed competitively alongside the other seasoned Dojo’s boosting the moral of the students. In the end, the best male competitor went to 11 years old Reyad Yassin after he earned himself 1Gold and 1Silver for individual events and 1Gold for team Kata. Kristalia Chaves also 11years were the best overall female competitor after her performance which led her to earn 2 Gold for individual events and another for team Kata. Many parents had a chance afterwards to give their sentiments, alluding to the consensus that they were impressed with the settings, the overall conduct of the officials and professional aura of the referees and judges noting the standard was beyond their expectation and that of international standard. Chief Judge - Sensei

Christopher Chaves quoted from the founding master of Shotokan karate, “Don’t think you have to win, think you don’t have to lose” in his closing remarks. Emphasizing that all students who took part in this tournament can be considered champions, because of the courage, effort and earnest practice of Karate-Do that allowed them to step up and do their best. He went on to inform the spectators that usually in previous years, it was one big tournament with seniors and juniors combined, but this year they took a decision to have the junior tourney first followed by the senior as this will allow for better time management and efficient use of the officials, referees and judges. Sensei Chaves recognized and thanked his judges – Marvin Singh, Neville Holder, Marlon George, Shermon Best, Shankar Singh and Rudolph Dyal and officials, also announcing that the senior National tournament will be held Saturday October 18th same venue from 1pm. JKA committee sought to thank their many sponsors for their support to make the tournament the success it was, the parents, supporters, friends, its special invitees and Mr. Gervy Harry.

9th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships – Road Race Guyana seeks AIBA ruling on Suriname request Six-member Guyanese team aiming for medals

The Guyana Boxing Association has written to world governing body, AIBA, seeking clarification on whether to accept an invitation from the Suriname Boxing Association (SBA) to participate in a competition in the Dutch speaking nation later this month. GBA President Steve Ninvalle reported that his association saw if fit to request AIBA’s intervention after receiving conflicting signals from Suriname. “We received an email from the secretary of SBA Horbert Dompig asking for Guyana’s participation in the competition from October 23 to 27. However, president of the SBA Remie Burke has called stating that his association has not sanctioned the competition. This has left us quite ambivalent at the moment and we are now calling on

Steve Ninvalle AIBA to show the way forward,” Ninvalle said. According to Ninvalle, Dompig claimed in his letter that the association has seven executives. Six of the executives had voted in favour of competition and Guyana being invited. However, this is being challenged by the president, who while admitting that there are two factions in

SBA, alleged that two executives including treasurer Sonny Dest, remain loyal to him. “We would support anything that is aimed at the development of the sport in the region but we are also cognizant of the perils of going against the grain of A I B A’ s e s t a b l i s h e d principles. Our hope is that Suriname can work out its internal issues quickly to allow for the advancement of the sport,” Ninvalle added. Guyana is being asked to send a team of boxers, referees and judges to the competition which would be staged at the same time of the Inter Guiana Games.
