EDITORIAL

The new colonisation It is timely to remind again of an old-fashioned saying.

It is: be careful of what is wished for, as it could come true.

This is exactly what is happening in Guyana, with Exxon serving as the answer for the wishful thinking and wistful hoping of many a Guyanese.

It was the wistful recollection by some of what the ‘White man’ represented since Guyana’s own leaders are so lacking in what it takes to do the job and take this nation along a different path. While the wishful thinking was only ‘if the White man come back and run the country, it would be better’. Well, it has happened by degrees, and it is going to continue to happen in increasing numbers if White men (and women) coming here to overrun this country, sometimes not for the better. Our leaders would be figureheads prancing around in self-importance, but actually important for nothing other than window dressing.

They have their part to play in a broadening charade, one which Exxon has made possible as chief mover and shaker.

At the heart of Guyana are the many and varied forms of this new colonialism. It is all related to oil, and ExxonMobil is always in the middle, as driving force, influential partner, a powerful sleeping one. Exxon is the honey, and Guyanese politicians and their carefully chosen agents about the money. It is the shadowy tangled web that becomes understandable from time to time, when bright lights are shone upon all the networks and dealings and players.

Here are some specific entities, as identified by this publication. There is Hess Corporation and Schlumberger and American Airlines and Jet Blue and the Hilton people and, of recent, Baker Hughes, to name just a few. It is of fair winds bringing the fair to our shores with their business plans and deep pockets and that magnet that never fail to stir interest: jobs for the locals. That plays well; and, of course, the downstream benefits of some roads, community playgrounds and charity donations. The White men who come are very good at playing to the poverty crowd.

It is the modern form of white paternalism, and we here fall for its crumbs and hymns. We are so brainwashed that we end up singing the Whiteman’s hymns to drown out any limited local opposition that may dare to stand against.

Local leaders have their armies of enforcers and propagandists to ensure that interference is kept to a minimum and out of sight and hearing. This is another treacherous part of the new colonialism, where locals beat down on locals, so that the outsiders can have their way.

In Colombia, one Pablo Escobar was famed for spreading his ill-gotten gains around with the peasants, with others rushing to imitate. The slave traders did that, too, through their benevolent societies and alms giving.

And they - whether trafficker, slaver or exploiter - always had champions in the places where they flourish to sing praises and keep the locals in order. Foreign companies do so, too, since to make a 10 million dollar donation here on this project and another over there for that one is good public relations that delights the simple country folk and leave them eating out of the hand of the Exxon(s) of the world.

Partnership is the newer form (and euphemism) of slavery and indentureship. It is also a very cheap way to do something that costs almost nothing and reap a bonanza of good feeling and fierce grassroots support. Pablo perfected that and Exxon and the other corporate powers are even more adept at working that game for their advantage.

Here is another manner in which the new colonialism flourishes: compromise the local political leaders and they are thus held hostage. They cannot speak out; they cannot stand in resistance; and they cannot turn against for fear of self-incrimination. The same goes for the droves of insiders and middlemen who are well-greased and are overjoyed to serve as guardians of the White man’s interest. In the new colonialism (like the old ones), it is always the illiterates and innocents and impoverished who come up short. They are the masses.

Disparaging each other gets us NOWHERE! DEAR EDITOR, There is no question or doubt in the mind of any Guyanese that Kaieteur News has been leading the reportage on the oil and gas sector. Every day, our team uses its best efforts to research relevant topics and produce news items that can help to inform our leaders in their bid to create the right governance framework for the sector. Along with the research that is done on a daily basis, this newspaper is in constant communication with experts regionally and internationally with the sole aim of learning about the good, the bad and the ugly that comes along with the discovery of “the devil’s excrement”. This is just a small part of the effort that goes into what we do at Kaieteur News and even then, this publication has never been nor has it ever portrayed itself to be all-knowing on the oil sector. Editor, the oil sector is a complex field.

Kaieteur News, like everyone else, is part of a learning curve. Our only aim has been to champion the fight for better oil deals so that Guyana, not Kaieteur News, gets what it rightfully deserves for the exploitation of its resources.

In so doing, we have sought to examine what our

neighbours have been doing with their oil industry. We need not look far or seek to reinvent the wheel when it comes to implementing the best practices for the benefit of our people. Last week, Kaieteur News spent several days examining some of the things Suriname has done to ensure that it gets the most for its resources. On November 29, 2020, Kaieteur published that the “Surinamese Petroleum Law explicitly mandates that contractors in the oil and gas industry must use local goods and services produced and/or available in Suriname, over that of foreign goods and services.”

This was juxtaposed against the disappointing reality that Guyana is without a policy or law that provides similar protection. The PPP/C has said that it intends to address local content and it is the hope of Kaieteur News that it would pay attention to what Suriname has done and apply what it believes have been the most effective provisions and implement same in a context-specific fashion.

Another article Kaieteur News published (November 22, 2020), exposed that “Suriname’s petroleum laws mandate that its accountants and representatives of a state

enterprise shall at all times have access to the facilities, equipment, activities, accounts, files and registers of any oil company.”

Guyana, however, does not enjoy the same freedom.

In fact, the Production Sharing Agreement Guyana has with ExxonMobil for the Stabroek Block states, the Minister “shall have the right to audit upon 90 days written notice, at his sole cost and expense, accounts and records of the contractor, maintained hereunder with respect to each Calendar Year within two years from the end of each such year.”

The contract states that the Minister may audit, examine and verify, “at reasonable times during normal business hours but not more than once per Calendar Year, all charges and credits relating to the contractor’s activities under the agreement and all books of accounts, accounting entries, material records and inventories, vouchers, payrolls, invoices and any other documents, correspondence and records necessary to audit and verify the charges and credits.”

Kaieteur News was keen to point out this disparity with the hope that the authorities of the day would seek to strengthen the powers, which

it has to audit ExxonMobil’s costs. After all, these exorbitant sums ultimately have to be paid for by the citizenry via cost recovery.

Following these two stories, Kaieteur News’ team would have sought to examine, at the precursory level, how much Suriname has been able to get for its oil as opposed to Guyana. Before, the pundits hurry to unleash a tsunami of criticism, let me state that I am aware that there are numerous characteristics that influence how countries arrive at their fiscal regime. I am fully aware that one has to be extremely careful in comparing countries in this light. But please bear in mind that this is only done with the intention of raising awareness regarding how vast our resources are, along with the fact that the time has come for us to embark on an overhaul of our own fiscal regime to ensure that it reflects our new status and is in keeping with industry standards for new producers.

Indeed, such topics have to be approached with great care. If there are ways Kaieteur News can improve in its reporting on these matters, we welcome comments and corrections from all.

Protecting our children, protect the future DEAR EDITOR, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child highlights the need for a few things with regards to children. These include the right to health, education, family life, play and recreation, an adequate standard of living and to be protected from abuse and harm. The reason that these were made into legal framework was because the collective countries in the world understood that children were being exploited at most, and these rights were being withheld from them at the least. In order to rectify this issue, the global collectivity decided it best to guide each nation, household and person, in the ways of ensuring the global future, by protecting the societal privileges of our children.

In the vast majority of cases, the cultural, structural and even social barriers that prevent parents and other persons who care for children (even older siblings in some cases) are so prevalent that children’s rights are unknowingly neglected. In other cases, the dissemination of information means nothing since all the guidelines on how to properly

care for children is ignored anyway. In both cases, however, the development of the society is negatively affected.

Some parents and guardians have expressed displeasure at having international organizations and external bodies tell them how to treat children. Some people stick to traditional methods that infringe on the developmental process of children simply because their own developmental process was negatively affected by certain ‘upbringing’ techniques. This frequent disregard for the effective development of our society is often overlooked but destructive all the same. If the needs of children are of such importance that various countries (including our own) have made it a global priority then it should be a matter of great importance (and address) for us, the people, also. If children are to have a safe space to live and to play, to have an education and sufficient healthcare plus food, protection from harm, etc., then there is no justification for keeping these things from them. Giving the child the things that the child needs to grow and be

successful does not take any power away from any person, but instead, ensures that the child is raised to recognize that the society they live in affords them their needs strictly through hard work that was employed to do so.

Many adults walk around without knowing their rights even in workplaces or in society. They are unaware of how to handle a situation where they are pulled over by the traffic police or how to safely oppose a specific piece of legislature that they deem harmful.

There is a myriad of situations where even adult’s rights are ignored or abused.

Even though these privileges are afforded to them by the fact that they live in a society.

This usually happens because such people were never introduced to the concept of children’s rights during the time when they were children, leading to them being unaware of the concept of rights even in adulthood.

Society itself has developed over a long and difficult process of trial and error that was supplemented by the efforts of the collective.

We see issues and we work together to solve them. So, when that police officer tries

to arrest you without giving you a reason, you should know that you have the right to ask for a reason. If you were never taught about these rights then you would grow up to think that you don’t have any when the truth is: that, society affords citizens privileges, based on the efforts of past citizens to fix a particular problem or meet a specific need.

Children have curious minds and if they are taught that they have the right to education, play, safety, care and all of these other things then they recognized how these rights will support them and their peers to grow up in a much safer society.

By educating children on their rights, we are ensuring a future where people are aware of their rights and work together to ensure it is afforded to everyone. Parents and children alike will benefit from such a process since parents will also develop a greater sense of responsibility and pride, knowing that they are not just raising their child, but also investing into the future of this green planet. A better tomorrow starts with the children of today.

The Coalition’s parties need an overhaul in leadership Recently, the British High Commissioner bid farewell to Guyana. He had initially said his formal goodbyes but was then asked by his government to ‘hold the fort’ until his successor was selected. He thus came back but has now returned home.

When a diplomat is scheduled to leave, it is normal for them to visit with both the Head of State and the Leader of the Opposition.

The British High Commissioner had bid farewell to the President; this was reported by the media.

But there was no report of him bidding farewell to the Leader of the Opposition.

Relations of course between the British High Commission and the APNU+AFC were not at their best during the five-month hiatus between the elections and the eventual declaration of the results of those elections. The British Government was in the forefront of the international efforts to scuttle the APNU+AFC’s attempt to be declared the winner by foul means. No it was always highly unlikely that any of the western diplomats who were scheduled to leave would have been paying any courtesy calls on the main Opposition party.

But there is a much more serious implication of the APNU+AFC’s actions during the election muddle. The APNU+AFC was subject to international ostracism because of their role in undermining the democratic process. As a consequence, travel sanctions were imposed by the United States of America on those who were believed to be complicit. It is widely suspected that persons within the leadership of the APNU+AFC would have had their visas revoked.

Also, it is obvious from comments made from certain

leaders of the Caribbean Community that they want no dealings with persons who were complicit in the rigging of the elections. And so it is more than likely that regional and international leaders would not wish to be seen in the company or presence of certain persons within the APNU+AFC leadership.

The APNU+AFC faces a credibility crisis. How does the leadership intend to restore this credibility when it is more than likely to be continued to be shunned by the international community.

No foreign leader is likely to want to meet or request a meeting with the leadership of the APNU+AFC given what took place in Guyana between March and August of this year.

It is hard to see how effective the main Opposition, APNU+AFC, can be without the capacity to interact with the international community.

But the international community appears to be keeping its distance from the APNU+AFC. The APNU+AFC won 31 seats in the March elections.

It is the legitimate opposition.

But it has a credibility problem because it is more than likely that the travel restrictions have not been relaxed and are not likely to be relaxed given the serious concerns which were expressed over the Coalition’s action during the election impasse.

Michael Pompeo came to Guyana and did not pay a courtesy call on the Opposition. The President of Suriname came to Guyana and again there was no report of a courtesy call on the Opposition. Nothing has been said so far as to whether the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil paid a courtesy call on the main Opposition.

The PNC/R and the AFC would have earned disrespect

over their conduct after the elections. The elections showed that they lost support. It will be hard to regain that support unless there are sweeping changes to the leadership of both parties.

The only way in which the image and reputation of the APNU+AFC can be renovated is through an overhaul of the leadership of both the PNC/R and the AFC. It is difficult to see how the same leadership which was at the helm of the party during the election confusion can continue on given all that has happened since.

But strange as it may seem, there appears no acceptance of this need. The same old leadership is in place and is attempting now to be critical of the incumbent government. Whatever they say though is going to boomerang against them because fingers are going to be pointed in their direction over what took place between March and August of this year.

There are some things in life which you cannot reverse.

And the attempts at undermining the election are going to haunt those who tried to benefit from the insidious attempt to pervert its course.

Once the present leadership of the APNU+AFC remains in place, the PPP/C is going to have a walkover in any election. Once the APNU+AFC opens its mouth, the PPP/C is going to point to the Coalition’s actions during the election impasse and people, including international donors, will simply continue to shun the main Opposition.

Moreover, he was a sports enthusiast with an avid

love for playing lawn tennis.

Though overwhelmed by sadness at his passing my heart is still flooded with the happy memories I have of my spouse, self and himself during some of our social visits to a few of the top discotheques in Beijing and at his farewell banquet hosted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry which are all occasions to reminisce.

So farewell our beloved Ambassador, precious brother and dear friend as you graciously complete the arduous journey of this transient life. May the “Angels of Heaven” serenade your sweet soul as you sleep in the bosom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ until that fateful “Day of the Resurrection” where “We’ll meet you in the morning by the bright riverside when all sorrows have drifted away.

Six-day-old baby is country’s Pork-knocker killed while trying to protect wife from robbers latest COVID-19 fatality The Ministry of Health (MOH) yesterday reported that a six-day-old male infant from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) succumbed due to COVID-19. The Ministry in its statement said that the infant died while being treated at a medical facility and his death was recorded as Guyana’s 150th COVID-19 fatality.

It was not revealed whether the child’s mother tested positive for the virus, and efforts made by this publication to contact health officials were futile yesterday.

Additionally, the Ministry recorded 38 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the total number of confirmed cases to 5,376 as indicated in its dashboard update.

The dashboard also revealed that three persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, 75 are in institutional isolation, 43 are in institutional quarantine and 782 are in approved home isolation. To date, 29,752 persons have been tested for COVID-19 countrywide and 4,346 recoveries have been recorded.

A pork-knocker, 26, was brutally murdered on Friday while trying to protect his wife from being hurt by three men presumed to be robbers.

Kevin Allam, of Turn Basin Port Kaituma, North West District (NWD), Region One had his throat slit around 17:30hrs at White Water Backdam.

Investigators said that Allam’s wife was attacked by the men in their shop at the location.

They grabbed onto her hair and Allam who was close by intervened to protect her.

However, he was overpowered by the men who pounced on him and began beating him with a piece of wood. The blows caused him to fall to the ground.

Severely injured, the men, detectives reported, dragged him outside and one of them used a knife to slit his throat while another held him down.

The men then re-entered the shop and removed a quantity of raw gold before turning their attention back to woman.

According to a police report, the woman pleaded for life and they left her alone and escaped.

Ranks were summoned to the scene where they removed Allam’s body and took it to the Port Kaituma District Hospital where it was further examined before being sent to the

Carpenter dies in Berbice accident A carpenter is now dead following an accident along the Number 5 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) Public Road.

Dead is Thussan Joe, a 35year-old motorcyclist of Number 22 Village, WCB. Reports are that the accident occurred on Saturday November 28, 2020 around 18:00hrs. It involved a motorcar owned by Donna Fraser Sears and was driven

by Devon Sears, 28, of Plantation Brahn WCB. Joe

was on the motorcycle.

According to reports, the motorcar made a U-turn from north to south into the path of the motorcycle, which was proceeding east along the northern side of the same road.

As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist fell on to the southern grass parapet. He sustained injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Fort Wellington Public

Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced him dead.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motorcar which gave a reading and print out of zero micrograms of alcohol.

Both vehicles were lodged at the Fort Wellington Police Station and are to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer. The driver of the motorcar is in custody pending investigations.

The EPA, according to Dr. Adams, currently lacks the basic capacities, such as human resources, to assess simple environmental issues.

A forensic audit of the agency done back in 2015 had discovered that the EPA should have had at least 263 persons employed. However, according to Dr. Adams, at the start of his tenure, only 90 persons were there.

With work, overtime the number increased to 120 and plans were afoot to boost it to at least 300, Dr. Adams reported. Not only that, he noted too, that plans were in the works to procure a stateof-the-art laboratory for the EPA.

However, these plans were cut short after the new People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) regime recently terminated his contract. But even with those improvements, it still was not enough.

Simple measuring equipment to measure pollutants in the air are lacking at the agency, Dr. Adams relayed.

“It is a problem and what used to happen was, we have staff that were very dedicated and they mean well and one of the things that we were doing was, we had some outdated equipment and they were going out taking measurements using those and I said if the equipment is old, I say we put it aside and say we don’t have the equipment,” he continued, adding “When we say that now, people laugh at us and say that we are not an EPA. But I prefer for us to not give any

data because you are playing with people’s lives because you are gonna say that okay, this is safe, but it is the wrong measurement.”

The environmental expert called on the government to provide adequate funding for the EPA as it is the guardian of Guyana’s environment and plays an intricate role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Guyanese.

“There is oil and gas, mining, road construction, etc., everything has to pass through the EPA so we need the resources, if we are going to really be serious about protecting people’s health, safety and the environment.

Half of the population is below the age of 25, so what are we gonna give them? They are the ones who are gonna have to survive this,” he said.

He noted too that part of the reason for this is because the Courts don’t have prosecutors who are knowledgeable about all the facets available in criminal law.

However, Nandlall said that this will soon change as the project is taking shape.

Already, the AG said that the prosecutorial project has attracted enough qualified persons to equip each Magistrates’ Court in the country with the skills needed to ensure justice is adequately dispensed.

The AG had previously

disclosed that in excess of 50 law graduates from the University of Guyana (UG) have already indicated their interest in being trained to serve as prosecutors.

The graduates, all holders of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degrees, will have to undertake a one-year accredited prosecutorial training programme at UG, which will soon be implemented. Graduates who are selected will be hired as prosecutors in the Magistrates’ courts in collaboration with the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Guyana Police Force.

The AG said one of the goals of the initiative is to address the overcrowding of local prisons. Guyana’s prison population significantly surpasses the world’s average with a rate of 264 per 100,000 and an occupancy level of 37.5 percent. AG Nandlall attributed this to an over reliance on custodial sentences and the overuse of pretrial detention in the criminal justice system.

It wasn’t scored officially, but the celebrity judges from the WBC saw it as a draw.

Yahoo Sports scored it six rounds to two, 78-74, for Tyson.

The idea of men older than 50 fighting isn’t a good one, but despite those misgivings, the entire show was fun. The production was top-notch and the music interludes were good and didn’t overwhelm the fights.

The three undercard fights were varying levels of entertaining. YouTuber Jake Paul landed eight punches in less than two rounds against ex-NBA star Nate Robinson, but scored three knockdowns and won by TKO. Badou Jack pummeled a

no-hoper named Blake McKernan, who showed far more toughness than boxing skill.

But Tyson and Jones were the story and they put on a show. It wasn’t like it might have been in their heyday, when they made themselves two of the biggest names in the sport’s history.

Tyson fought 34 years and six days after knocking out Trevor Berbick at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1986 to become the youngest champion in heavyweight history. Jones fought for the first time since a farewell fight in 2018.

It was far from a vintage performance from either fighter, but it wasn’t embarrassing, either. They fought according to the way that Andy Foster, the executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission, said they

would: Hard but without trying to kill each other.

Both of them were breathing heavily by the third round, but they pushed through and made it to the end.

They fought eight twominute rounds and wore 12ounce gloves instead of the 10-ounce version professional heavyweights wear. But it did not look farcical and it was fun to see the legends go at it.

“I’m used to doing this for three minutes, but sometimes those two minutes felt like three minutes,” said Tyson, who fought for the first time since losing to Kevin McBride in 2005.

AFP - West Indies captain Kieron Pollard accused his side of not performing to international standards yesterday after New Zealand comprehensively won the second Twenty20 international by 72 runs on the back of a record century by Glenn Phillips.

New Zealand wrapped up the series at Mount Maunganui with a game to spare, after winning the opening match on Friday by five wickets, as Phillips provided a batting masterclass.

Called up to the Twenty20 side while regular skipper Kane Williamson focuses on the upcoming Tests, Phillips plundered eight sixes and 10 fours on his way to 108 as New Zealand posted a mammoth 238 for three and then restricted the West Indies to 166 for nine.

“You never know when the next opportunity is going to come and I came into this going ‘let’s go in as hard as I possibly can. I know I can do it’,” Phillips said.

The 23-year-old, who was born in South Africa but moved to New Zealand at the age of five, took just 46 deliveries to reach his century, the 10th fastest in Twenty20 internationals and one

ball faster than the previous New Zealand record held by Colin Munro. Phillips plays in the Caribbean in the New Zealand off-season and said familiarity with the West Indies attack was a big help.

“Definitely, that has a lot to do with how I performed out here. You go in with more confidence against guys that you’ve played well against before,” said Phillips, who also took two catches and ran out opener Andre Fletcher in a brilliant all-round display.

‘They are trying to make me the scapegoat’: says Maradona’s doctor - He is ‘under investigation for involuntary manslaughter’ by police in Argentina Daily Mail - Diego Maradona’s doctor has tearfully denied any wrongdoing in his care of the late footballing icon as the police investigation into his death continues.

Leopoldo Luque is being probed over medical negligence and police are treating the footballer’s death as a possible culpable homicide.

But in his first media interview since police raided his home earlier yesterday, the doctor has said ‘someone is trying to find a scapegoat’ where there isn’t one.

Police raided the home of the personal physician Luque yesterday and investigators are looking into all the medical staff involved with his care.

while the search on the outskirts of Buenos Aires took place, while Argentinian TV stations have been broadcasting live images of police entering his clinic.

The searches were ordered after Maradona’s daughters Dalma and Giannina gave statements yesterday and questioned whether the medication their father was receiving was appropriate.

Argentinian media are reporting Luque could be questioned as an ‘imputado’, someone who is under official investigation on suspicion of possible mala praxis or negligence.

The physician mounted an emotional defence of his treatment of the soccer legend after the police search

of his home.

Luque broke down in tears as he insisted he had done everything possible to assist the retired footballer in his first interview since investigators launched their shock operation to try to establish whether Maradona had been the victim of medical negligence.

Tears rolled down his cheeks as he insisted in a hastily-arranged press conference at his home near Buenos Aires which lasted nearly 40 minutes a ‘friend’ had died and Diego was his own worst enemy when it came to accepting help from professionals.

He said: ‘I was shocked when police turned up at my door. I’m going to co-operate fully.

‘I know what I did and what I did was for Diego’s benefit until the last moment.

I did the best I could.

‘I feel terrible because a friend died. I don’t blame myself for anything. It’s very unfair what’s happening.

‘I didn’t see Diego’s daughters a lot but the rest of his family, his siblings and his nephews adore me.

‘Someone is trying to find a scapegoat here when I don’t see one anywhere.

‘We all did the best we could with Diego.’

Insisting Diego had a problem with pills and alcohol, he added: ‘He punished himself in a way I wasn’t going to allow, not as a doctor but as a friend.

‘I don’t see good and bad people in all this. We all did what we could. But Diego was the most difficult one of them.

‘You couldn’t do anything if Diego didn’t want it. He hated doctors and psychologists. With me it was different because I was honest with him. He was my friend.

‘He should have gone to a centre of rehabilitation when he left hospital but he didn’t want to.

‘If I’m responsible for anything when it comes to Diego, it was loving him and improving his life.’

Maradona’s lawyer Matias Morla last week demanded a top-level probe into the emergency response to the retired footballer’s death.

Morla said the first ambulance took more than half an hour to reach the rented house north of Buenos Aires where the former Naples and Barcelona star suffered heart failure.

He called the delay a ‘criminal idiocy’ and complained Maradona had not received any medical checks in the 12 hours before he died.

It later emerged the first ambulance took 11 minutes to reach the private San Andres gated estate near Buenos Aires Maradona moved to after leaving hospital on November 11 following his brain blood clot operation.

On Saturday it emerged Maradona’s nurse had admitted she lied about an early-morning check-up.

Initial reports pointed to a 24-year-old nephew who was staying with him at the San Andres home being the last person to see him alive over breakfast the day Diego died.

Maradona was said to have told his relative ‘I’m not feeling well’ before going back to bed and dying in his sleep before investigators were told he had never got up on Wednesday to eat anything.

Diego’s nephew told investigators he last saw him when he went to bed around 11pm on Tuesday. An uneaten late-night sandwich snack was among the items found in his room by police.

A night-shift nurse told investigators he had seen Maradona ‘sleeping and breathing normally in bed’ around 6.30am on Wednesday.

A report in the hands of state prosecutors heading a probe into the retired footballer’s death, leaked to Argentinian media and signed by a nurse named locally as Dahiana Gisela Madrid who took over around the same time, states: ‘At 6.30am I started my shift and the patient was resting.

At 7.30am he is heard moving around inside his room. At 8.30am he continues to rest. At 9.20am he refuses to have his vital signs monitored.’

The health report for private medical firm Medidom is now at the centre of an ongoing probe after the nurse reportedly told investigators she had never entered Diego’s bedroom the morning of his death to check up on him.

Local news agency Telam, citing judicial sources in a report widely echoed in the Argentinian press, said the nurse had claimed in her second statement under oath that she had been ‘made to

lie’ for the Medidom report.

‘What the witness added in that second statement is that she was made to write in a report for Medidom, where she is part of the nursing team assisting people receiving home medical care, that she had tried to monitor Maradona’s vital signs when the reality is that she let him rest,’ the report said.

It was not made crystal clear if she was claiming her bosses had obliged her to file the ‘false’ report amid concerns they would be accused of negligence over Maradona’s death, or her hand had been forced by others.

Psychiatrist Susana Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Diaz, who formed part of Maradona’s care team, are said to have entered the room just before midday and made several unsuccessful attempts to revive him before calling 999.

A recording of the call Maradona’s personal physician Leopoldo Luque made to the emergency services, stating he had suffered a suspected cardiac arrest, has been leaked to Argentinian media.

The former Naples and Barcelona star, who was just 60, was declared dead around midday on Wednesday. Initial post-mortem results revealed the recovering cocaine addict, who also had alcohol problems, had suffered heart failure which caused pulmonary edema.

GFF launches #wecare health & football social media campaign The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has launched a social media campaign to encourage healthy behaviour and greater participation in football as part of its UEFA Assist “Bounceback” programme.

The #wecare campaign will feature weekly videos of GFF football ambassadors, including national team players and coaches, sharing COVID-19 and other health awareness messages while performing football drills and skills.

Golden Jaguars Head Coach Marcio Maximo kicked off the campaign on

November 28 with a simple trick to get the ball rolling – the flick up – alongside a message for fans to “maintain social distancing and stay safe.”

“We want to see football fans having fun by trying to copy these skills and drills in their own videos and sharing them with their friends, so that we can all stay connected and active as we work towards the responsible and safe resumption of football competition,” said GFF President Wayne Forde.
