Danish company secures contract to support ExxonMobil's offshore operations A

merican oil giant, ExxonMobil Guyana has awarded a one-year contract to a company in Denmark to support its field development activities offshore Guyana.

Exxon's affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) is the operator of the lucrative Stabroek Block which has over 11 billion proven barrels of oil.

EEPGL holds a 45 percent interest in the block.

Meanwhile, Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. holds a 30 percent interest and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, holds a 25 percent interest.

O n T h u r s d a y, t h e company, Maersk Supply Service announced that the contract was signed for the Subsea Support Vessel (SSV), Maersk Nomad to support offshore operation in Guyana.

According to the announcement, Maersk Nomad will be operating

with two Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) systems, providing general and subsea support scopes for ExxonMobil's six ultradeepwater drill ships currently operating in the Stabroek Block.

The company noted too that the first charter is expected to commence in mid-November 2022, out of Georgetown.

“This is a great milestone for Maersk Supply Service, as we expand our operations a n d o ff e r i n g i n L a t i n America.

We now look forward to building a positive relationship with ExxonMobil offshore Guyana, and to build on Maersk Nomad's strong track record of delivering longterm contracts offshore Angola for ExxonMobil's local affiliate,” said Rafael Thome, Managing Director for Maersk Supply Service in Brazil and Latin America.

According to the company's website, Maersk Supply Service is a leading

provider of marine services and project solutions for offshore energy sectors – with a large fleet of anchor handling and subsea support vessels, the company specialises in towing, mooring, and installing floating units.

It was stated too that the company has established a presence in countries like Angola, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Mexico, Norway, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom (UK).

Back in December 2021, the Government of Guyana (GoG) passed a Local Content Legislation.

This law is intended to regulate the way companies operate in Guyana's oil and gas sector; employ persons, buy services and the way that they procure goods.

However, since the passage there have been several complaints by local companies about local content related issues.

The issues were brought to the attention of the

government, which then signalled its intent to regularise the law to ensure local companies also benefit from the country's oil boom.

Just last week, Kaieteur News reported that Exxon awarded a US$263M, threeyear contract to a Norwegian subsea firm for two vessels to support its offshore operation.

The Norwegian company, DOF Subsea announced on October 21, that it has now established a presence in Guyana with the

award of a three-year contract with Exxon, stating too that it is 'happy to get in on the flourishing Guyanese market.'

According to that announcement, the threeyear contract is for two vessels.

Under the agreement, DOF Subsea will perform Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR), well intervention support, and light subsea construction activities to, “support the growing subsea

infrastructures in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana.”

It was noted that the two Multipurpose Support Construction Vessels with 250-ton active heavecompensated (AHC) crane and two work-class ROV systems will be deployed in Guyana for 3-year terms, plus a 2-year option.

The first vessel was reported to be mobilised last month, while the second vessel is scheduled to commence in January 2023.

Guyana to auction 14 oil blocks 10% royalty, Ring fencing, 50/50 profit sharing, signing bonuses, 10% corporation tax among benefits for new agreements penalties for not implementing work programme, among new fiscal terms

By Kiana Wilburg Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday announced that Guyana will put on auction 14 oil blocks in its first such exercise since finding oil. The auction will last for five months.

Speaking to members of the media at a news conference held at the Office of the President, Jagdeo said Petroleum Agreements for these blocks will also feature new fiscal terms. These include: a 10 percent royalty, 50/50 sharing of profit oil and a 10 percent Corporation Tax. He said these terms, among others, were had following work that was undertaken with several consultants.

Jagdeo said IHS Markit, a leading information services provider headquartered in the UK is taking lead on guiding The Guyana Government on the auction.

The Vice President said: “We decided to auction 14 blocks and these would range from about 1000 square kilometres to 3000 square kilometers with the majority of them being close to 2000 square kilometers. Eleven of these will be in the shallow area and three in the deep Area C,” the former Guyanese leader said.

He explained that the new fiscal regime which will not

only apply to the auction but also all subsequent Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) to be signed for areas such as the Kaieteur and Canje oil blocks. He was keen to clarify that it will not apply to the ExxonMobil-led Stabroek Block which holds all of Guyana's commercial discoveries thus far.

In addition to the 10 percent royalty, Jagdeo said government also agreed for there to be a 65 percent cost recovery ceiling in a given year. The Vice President s a i d , “ We h a v e t h e consultants working to strengthen the (model) PSA in a number of other areas.

The laws of the country will also be amended accordingly to support the auction.”

Jagdeo noted that IHS is a global powerhouse which monitors the pulse of the industry. In light of this, it was able to determine that Guyana is not the only country vying for the interest of investors via auctions. He said 65 countries in this 2022 period are either doing a bid round or launching one. The United Kingdom for example has launched a massive bid round with over 900 oil and gas blocks up for grabs. “We know the funds are scarce largely because of climate change targets companies

have to meet too. It is harder to raise funds for the sector because we have some cases where loans garnered by companies are being vetoed for the oil sector. We have seen globally from the international oil companies as well that about 70 to 80 percent of their total spending used to go to upstream activities,” the Guyanese Vice President said.

Jagdeo said by 2025, this is anticipated to drop around 60 percent. He said too that some companies are even shaving off global assets due to climate change commitments. Even with such an environment, Jagdeo said he believes Guyana will succeed with the new fiscal formula to be applied to oil contracts going forward.

LOCALS HAVE A CHANCE Importantly, Jagdeo said Guyanese will have a chance to compete alongside foreign entities for the oil blocks and that there will be minimum technical and financial qualifications that have to be met. “We don't want it to be too onerous. The qualifications will be more stringent for the ultra deep areas because only few companies can work there,” the Vice President said.

U.S. sells last batch of emergency reserve oil from historic release WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Energy on Thursday said it sold 15 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to six companies, completing the last batch of the largest-ever release from the stockpile announced by President Joe Biden in March.

The contracts were awarded to Phillips 66, Marathon Petroleum Supply and Trading LLC, Shell Trading (US), Valero Marketing and Supply, Macquarie Commodities Trading US, and Equinor Marketing and Trading, the Energy Department said in a statement.

Deliveries will take place from Dec. 1 to Dec. 31.Biden sold 180 million barrels of oil from the reserve to fight oil prices that had spiked on c o n c e r n s about Russia's war on Ukraine, stronger demand as global consumers emerged from the pandemic, and U.S. drillers struggling at first to boost output.

The oil price jump helped push U.S. inflation to the highest level in 40 years.

The U.S. president announced a plan last month to begin refilling the stockpile when U.S. crude is around $70 a barrel, a level he said would allow drillers to profit while being a good deal for taxpayers.

The U.S. benchmark was around $89 on Thursday.

The U.S. Treasury estimated that the 180 million barrel sale cut gasoline prices by up to about 40 cents per gallon compared to what they would have been absent the release.

But the sale also bled the SPR, meant to be a protection against shocks in energy markets, to the lowest level since May 1984.

And it helped to sour U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia which sided with Russia in early October in a deep oil production cut.

Biden said on Oct. 19 the United States is ready to tap the SPR again early next year to rein in prices.

The former President said there are no restrictions on how many blocks a company can bid for but three is the most one company can get.

RELINQUISHMENT Jagdeo said government will also tighten up relinquishment provisions for the awarded blocks. In this regard, he said companies will be able to hold the blocks for 10 years and have an initial three year period to do seismic work.

Once that period expires, the company would have to give up 50 percent of the block.

Tw o e x t e n s i o n s , e a c h carrying a one year lifecycle, will be granted to execute the drilling programmes. The VP said this aggressive relinquishment approach is being taken to prevent companies from sitting idly on the blocks and preventing the country from making full use of it.

Importantly, he said the companies would have to outline how much they plan to spend on their seismic work. If they don't commit to it, they would be penalised.

In this regard, he said the company would be made to pay the State the full amount committed for the work the seismic work. They would also lose the block. He said also that competing companies would be

considered against each other for their work programme and spending therein as well as the signing bonus they are willing to pay.

RINGFENCING One of the most highly criticised loopholes of the 2016 Stabroek Block Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) signed with ExxonMobil and its partners is the absence of ring-fencing provisions.

Such clauses are necessary to protect the revenues of one producing field from being significantly decreased by expenses associated with another project. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had said for example that Guyana runs the risk of having a smaller pie to take from the Liza Phase One Project since the money made from that development would be used by Exxon to offset costs associated with developing or drilling other fields. If there were ringfencing provisions in place, Exxon would only be able to deduct expenses related to Liza One from the revenue

Jagdeo noted on Thursday that this was indeed an area of concern, hence none of the blocks put up for auction are as large as the Stabroek Block which stretches 26,800 square kilometres. As a result of most blocks being 2000 square kilometers, Jagdeo said there would be no need to worry about several projects being developed to the scale that is being done on the Stabroek Block. As is already being done, once a company signs a contract for any of the 14 blocks, they would not be able to take expenses from one block over to another. Jagdeo said the bid round will be launched soon and last for five months.

Half of Guyana crying in pain

T

he World Bank (WB) dumped a bucket of freezing water on all those gaudy economic numbers and estimates that have delighted the PPPC Government and its mouthpieces in the months since oil has been found. There has hardly been a day when the best descriptions of economists, statisticians, and analysts have not been placed in the media to inspire Guyanese about what it is that they have.

Guyanese know that they have oil in the billions of barrels, and they know from being bombarded by the media and PPPC Government spokespeople that their economy is among the best on the planet.

Now, thanks to a disturbing report from the World Bank, many Guyanese are nodding their heads as to the reality they live with, and how much this oil wealth and all these grand economic numbers have meant for them. Frankly, Guyana’s oil wealth has not made a difference for almost half of our citizens (“World Bank says…Almost 50% of Guyanese living on GYD$1000 per day…

Opposition renews call for Govt. to press for more money from ExxonMobil” -KN November 3). Can this be real?

Can the respected World Bank have it wrong? Can it be that Guyana’s political Opposition has finally found an issue of sufficient substance in which to put its teeth and make the PPPC Government come to its senses?

Numerous Guyanese did not need the World Bank to tell them the extreme difficulty of what it is to live in this oil rich country. The just-under-half of the Guyanese population, who pull their hair out of their heads, and chew their fingernails with worry, already knew about that grim plight because they are living it right now. A thousand Guyana dollars can only stretch so far, and when it is done, there is so much of what couldn’t be had.

The result is that Guyanese parents and children have to do without, and not with just some odds and ends, but on a lot of what matters, since they are basics that must be had, if there is going to be any kind of decent existence.

Guyana is gushing oil by the hundreds of thousands of barrels daily and Guyanese are scrambling to get by on GY$1000 per day. ExxonMobil is minting its own money from Guyana’s oil, while half of the Guyanese population is spitting blood, can hardly draw a breath. What to eat? What to wear? What to give the children? How to pay the bills that are steadily piling up? What to do to make the pain go away, since painkillers may not be in reach because the GY$1000 for the day is already gone.

The frontline leaders of the PPPC Government are always ready with a quick, slick answer. It would be interesting to observe what spin President Ali, and Vice President Jagdeo (and their storytellers) are going to put on this upsetting information coming out of the World Bank. We at this paper know what is going on in the real world, the one down in the streets, and in the villages, and on the roads, where Guyanese are hurting. They can’t catch up with a crushing cost-ofliving nightmare, they have nothing of substance to swallow, they can’t even breathe.

It is interesting that the Opposition has latched onto to this World Bank development to call on the PPPC Government to up the ante on ExxonMobil, so that Guyana can get more from its oil. It is now obvious that government leaders and ministers (and talking heads) cannot continue to spout all these beautiful economic percentages and projections, while Guyanese are hungry and in need of urgent help. Half of Guyana needs immediate assistance, and not more paper dolls with nice figures written all over them.

More money for public servants and those earning the minimum wage is a start.

More for those on fixed incomes, more for families, and more for every Guyanese living at or near that GY$1000 a day number. ExxonMobil must pay or it must be pushed out.

ExxonMobil must give Guyana more, or it must go. The PPPC Government must see to that, or it must go too. More from ExxonMobil for Guyana, more now (or move out).

BE ON GUARD, WATCH BACK DEAR EDITOR, I hear we have democracy in Guyana.

Frequently, I pause and chew on that piety, and I confess to difficulty swallowing.

I would love to, but there are these impediments, which I share.

I went to a funeral by the National Assembly the other day, and a complete stranger called me by name, and informed, ‘we have your back.’ He added that ‘the guys are vicious.’ I nodded like leaders, like supporters.

I had just emerged from a house of worship, so I pointed to the heights, still hearing the echoes of Ecclesiasticus, “there is time for living, and there is a time for...” I am ready for either.

Full stop. So those who wish to do so can proceed with their manoeuvres, like they tried before when they tried devilishly hard to kill a reputation using technology.

I am still where I am and who I am.

The journey continues, and it is a perilous one in this PPP democracy country, admittedly. I may reach for the Guardians of Democracy, for I know some of them. Not for a protective hand, but to inquire if this is the democracy that they stood for so sturdily.

Editor, since we have

democracy, and its sacred ideals, then why should any Guyanese need to watch their back or anyone thinks so, or that they have to watch out for them? Maybe the warning brother is feeling his w a y, i m a g i n i n g t e s t s , exaggerating menaces. But what if he is on the right track?

What if there are pent-up furies that fuel the raging wraths of PPP Government goons and Palace Guard that their messages that all is clean and true (as they say) must not be challenged nor tampered with by anyone on any occasion for any reason?

Including reasons that are founded on truth, commonsense, the environment, the record, and what can’t be denied, or covered up, no matter how well-camouflaged, or spun.

What then? If the stranger, a fellow Guyanese by the sound of him, is on good ground, then whatever comes to fruition (or Final Solution), I am putting this on the heads of the President and Vice President.

I spare the Attorney General for now, despite his name being mentioned by some parents who are hurting.

Both senior leaders have manifested attributes that leave respect for law in a

state of conflict first, then suspension next. Some questions are answered, many left untouched. But when both the President and Vice President have been strident in silencing, in the most abusive manner possible, those who stood before them and asked straight questions, then a standard is set. Praetorian Guardsmen feel that when they do a dirty need, regardless of how heinous, they have executed a favour for leaders, whether they know or not, gave a nod or not.

Leaders would be pleased because a thorn is no more. Again, I point to Archbishop Beckett and his Cathedral encounter. Some things can be controlled; some are outside that sphere.

What has to be will be. That is the end of the story.

I am perplexed that any government could lack the self-confidence, could be so wounded for conviction, that one man or one writing or one position could cause its leaders and its henchmen so much anxiety, so many agitations.

Must be some substance there. With so many voices and so many pens already in action on behalf of the PPP Government, it is revealing that this same PPP

Government and its rabid insiders are so insecure that any single voice in the Guyana wilderness can be the source of so much turbulence. We all know that all is not well (far, very far, from it) on the score of governance under the PPP, yet there is this Stalinist insistence, demand that all rise and bow to absolute perfection.

My position is simple: be gone! Get lost! If that falls short of doing the job, then there is that four-letter word followed by one with three.

Editor, the road traveled is too far along, and the thought of turning back has never crossed. There! I am sending my own subliminal message. Also, the political, racial, and social environments are too riddled with decays, hatreds, malfeasances, and the maledictions that come from them.

I just have to keep going, for I believe that what comes out is more than humble public service. It is work above and beyond me. I am only the messenger. Que sera, sera.

One more thing: to that caring and conscientious Guyanese citizen: thanks, my brother.

Tribute to a farmer and family, and a son of the soil DEAR EDITOR, I hereby sincerely, on b e h a l f o f m y f a m i l y, commensurate with the children and family of the late Krishendat Persaud known as Churchill. The loving father of the Honourable Minister Priya Manickchand, Jaya Manickchand and Anil Manickchand.

Churchill is related to us in that, his father’s sister was married to my mother’s brother (my Mamoo) and she was known to us as Hen (our Mammy). Uncle

Manickchand, his father, as we know him, was a pioneer farmer in the Mahaicony Creek in the area of Governor Lite where he possessed about 700 acres of land on lease for cattle and rice.

There were several other farmers who ventured forth in the Mahaicony Creek seeking a livelihood. Uncle Manickchand cleared the land for cultivation of rice and grazing of cattle. The means of transportation at that time was by river, by boats and launch. This was

during the period in the 1950’s.

The government at that time purchased the milk of the farmers which were brought down by milk wagons to the milk plant located at Kingston, Georgetown.

Uncle Manickchand would wake up at 3am to commence milking his cows to reach the launch at 5:30am. Several farmers followed suit. He would then return home after taking his river bath and breakfast to return to his pen to release

his cows to graze and then to the rice field to plough.

Some farmers had tractors and ploughs.

He commenced with oxen and plough and as he developed, later purchased a tractor.

Mr. Manickchand herded his cattle by means of his horse that he loved to ride.

He progressed to that state successfully where he had the means to buy his m o t o r c a r, t h e o n e I remember; a Holden Motor Car from Sanbach (Continued on page 6)

Dr. Vishnu Bisram for Guyana High Commissioner to India DEAR EDITOR, I read that High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Charrandass Persaud, will be returning home soon. A suitable replacement is needed. I can’t think of anyone who is better qualified for this position than the diplomacy specialist, prolific writer and diaspora activist, Dr. Vishnu Bisram. He has all

the qualities to be an excellent ambassador.

Although not a career foreign service diplomat of the government of Guyana, Dr. Bisram has been serving as a non-official ‘diplomat and ambassador’ for decades by promoting Guyana’s interests in the United States, India and other countries. Wherever he

travelled and lectured, he promoted Guyana.

Dr. Bisram is well known for his consistent advocacy for free and fair elections in Guyana over the last 50 years, and was never fearful to condemn fraud and violations of human rights or organize protests, (Continued on page 6)

Teixeira’s letter can earn World Bank on poverty the first prize for literature in Guyana: harrowing and damning in the fiction category DEAR EDITOR, MP Gail Teixeira’s letter published today’s Stabroek News November 2, 2022, t i t l e d ‘ G U YA N A I S R A P I D LY M O V I N G F O RWA R D A N D INCLUDING ALL PEOPLE REGARDLESS OF RACE, CLASS, GEOGRAPHY’ could well earn the first prize for literature in the fiction writing department.

It is unnecessary to respond in detail except to note or boast first that we are the fastest growing economy in this part of the world. Be that as it may, as a purported Socialist, the good Lady should know that what is

relevant and important is how much ordinary people and in particular those assumed to be nonsupporters of the PPP are benefiting.

The Good Lady has conveniently ignored a recent report from the World Bank which states as follows:- ‘That Guyana’s poverty rate is among the highest in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region.’

The Hon. MP and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance has carefully ignored a plea to her Government to immediately double the salary and wages of public

servants earning less than one hundred and twenty thousand ($120,000) dollars per month.

Dear Editor, the people who are now cutting corners to find the money to pay the fees for the upcoming CXC Examinations and must pay more for all of the basic food items are not interested in propaganda nor the pennies and crumbs from the Master’s table but a living wage so that they can live with some level of dignity.

They say you can fool some of the people some at a time but not all the people all the time.

Pres. Ali and Jagdeo acting like Ambassadors for ExxonMobil

DEAR EDITOR, I have just started to tune-in to ‘The Glenn Lall Show,’ which is on the Kaieteur News website. In a recent show, Mr. Glenn Lall (Proprietor of KN) says that (PRESIDENT) Irfaan Ali is talking about eco-tourism and agriculture propelling Guyana’s Economy to a higher level thereby giving Guyanese a better standard

of living.

It is ridiculous and clueless for (President) Ali to make such statements as Guyana Oil is what will give Guyanese a higher living standards. But then again (President) Ali is known to make ridiculous statements like his campaign promise of creating 50,000 jobs. What is not so ridiculous is why is (President) Ali and Vice

President Bharrat Jagdeo acting like Ambassadors for ExxonMobil as opposed to being Leaders for Guyanese? Clearly, the Stockholm Syndrome have taken hold of them leading them to believe that they need to be representatives of ExxonMobil as opposed to representatives of Guyanese?

OKAY, I’ve had enough of them. Is there ANYONE in the PPP who will stand up to these two clowns?

DEAR EDITOR, Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados has an essay in this week’s ‘TIME’ magazine in a special report section featuring six viewpoints from around the world on the topic of climate justice. PM Mottley’s essay is published under the title, ‘Tax Oil to Pay for Damage’ as she pleads the case that those who caused the current nexus of climate damage while reaping massive amounts of wealth in the

process, should be the ones primarily responsible for remedying the resulting mess; not those who didn’t cause the problem but who now are bearing the brunt of the damages caused by global warming and climate change. One of her suggestions is “to put a levy on the production of fossil fuels”. I remember that in December 1994, at my home in Midland, Texas, former President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, speaking after

dinner to a large group of Midlanders, including many in the Oil and Gas industry, offered the same proposal in his quest for ‘A New Global Human Order’.

The adoring audience, which he held in the cup of his hands until then, immediately went stone cold. I am curious how Ms. Mottley’s incarnation of t a x i n g o t h e r p e o p l e ’s produce will play in the front yard of the world’s newest and fastest fossil fuel producer.

Govt. must help the poor, hurting half of population immediately DEAR EDITOR, The frequent claims of growth in the economy, the shocking WB Report has put a damper on such euphoria, with the revelation that half the population subsists one thousand dollars (GYD) daily and we remain among the poorest in the LATAM and Caribbean regions. This can bring no comfort to the authorities, boasting almost daily of oil finds, in this 21stcentury.

This is not from the opposition, but a respected financial institution. It is posited to allow this situation to continue would be indictable. Put a hold on the gas-to-shore and Amalia projects and concentrate attention and assistance to the half in dire need. No less would be too much and hopefully not too late.

Rice farmers negatively impact other road users in Greenwich Park to Vergenoegen area DEAR EDITOR, It is appalling that the relevant authorities have been condoning the muddy condition with which the rice farmers, between Greenwich Park and Vergenoegen in Region Three, have been leaving the public road.

These rice farmers have been driving their tractors with the wheels loaded with wet mud.

As the tractor drives along the public road, this wet mud is catapulted all over the road.

Thousands of people are affected by these uncaring and unconcerned rice farmers. It appears as if the drivers for the tractors got their licences by ‘hook or crook’. I say this because their use of the roads does not show they have any knowledge of the 5Cs taught

by the police at driving classes.

Care, concern, common sense, courtesy and consideration for other road users seem to be completely absent from their memory.

Firstly, when the road is left in a muddy state and it rains, other vehicles are splattered with mud. This gives hundreds of vehicle owners added work to clean their vehicles or add to their expenses by having to visit the wash bay. What is worse, pedestrians and cyclists have to face this onslaught of wet mud totally unguarded. Just imagine a neatly dressed schoolchild or office worker coming out to use the wet muddy road on a rainy day.

On any of these days, persons waiting on transportation can be seen

standing in the grass, instead at the edges of the road because of the mud left on the road. This bullying by rice farmers cannot continue.

Secondly, a wet, muddy road significantly reduces the effectiveness of brakes on vehicles. This is because wet mud forms a slippery film between the road and tires.

As a result, the probability of accidents increases notably. Thirdly, when the mud on the road dries it is transformed into dust. This dust makes its way into nearby houses forcing homeowners and housewives to do extra work to keep their homes clean.

Moreover, they are compelled to lock up in their houses to avoid the dust.

Tribute to a farmer and family...

It is little known to the people of the city and elsewhere of the struggles, the pain and suffering of farmers in this land, muddy environment, slushy dams, early morning toil and frequent loss of crops.

With little aid, patience and contentment, together with energy and enthusiasm, they never gave up as they would take loans with high interest rates and take further risks in the fields in order to

eke out a living.

The farmers’ family become their club and their farming neighbours become companions, sometimes enemy.

One famous farmer known to the country Mr. Karamath, now deceased, who was a benevolent gentleman, is well known by the Karamath school where he donated that land.

Equally, Churchill was known for his generosity, his charity, his aid to other farmers, his sharing of fertilizers and other inputs for the rice lands.

Churchill was also known as a fine hunter as he loved to hunt.

The suffering of farmers makes them very simple and humble and they realize that out of suffering, they find God. The name of Manickchand will continue to be sound along Mahaicony and elsewhere as his children are committed to serve the country.

Additionally, persons with respiratory problems are at greater risk of being hospitalised due to the dust pollution.

It is unfortunate that a few rice farmers are allowed to affect thousands of people i n t h i s m a n n e r. I ’ m suggesting that these few

rice farmers wash the mud off their machinery before driving unto the public road.

Furthermore, I’m recommending that the traffic police monitor the use of the road by the rice farmers to ensure that the carriage way is a clean and safe space for other road

users and the residents.

No one should have to endure the stress caused by these insensitive rice farmers. I hope that the relevant authorities will attend to this matter immediately.

The Natural Attrition Rate should have enabled Balancing of Government Institutions DEAR EDITOR, There have been claims of racial discrimination in G u y a n a . Wi t h I n d o Guyanese having a disproportionate amount of Guyana’s wealth, there has been a call for a redistribution of wealth.

There has always been a call, long before Guyana came into existence, for a redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor.

But, in Guyana’s case, it takes on an ethnic perspective.

How does those who purport to want wealth transfer from rich to poor envisage such transfers to take place?

Similarly, there has been a call for ethnically balancing of the AfroGuyanese dominated Government Institutions.

The natural attrition rate should have enabled balancing of the Government Institutions over the decades.

Obviously, something is stopping this from happening.

Some would argue that Indo-Guyanese do not want to work in the Police Force or the Armed Forces hence why there is an in-balance in these Government Institutions. It i s a R U B B I S H ARGUMENT as what is preventing Chinese, Portuguese or Amerindians

from joining up en masse?

For, as an example, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to win the war on crime, it will need the co-operation of citizens. It will need to win the hearts and minds of citizens, which is not going to happen overnight as the vast majority of citizens distrust the GPF. With the call for equal opportunities for all, I hope in time that these Government Institutions will be more ethnically balanced just as I hope in time for there to be transfer from those who are wealthy to those who are poor.

He also helped to organize and coordinate as well as write about Guyanese diasporic activities in the USA since 1977. He organized and championed the diaspora in the USA for over 45 years.

He has been very active

in a number of Guyanese, Caribbean and Asian Indian organizations.

He has been repeatedly honoured for his activism and journalism by community-based organizations.

Dr. Bisram is a wellrounded distinguished scholar, creative thinker, media writer, community leader and organizer. He studied Foreign Policy (Relations), International Politics, International Relations, Diplomacy and History.

He is a specialist on Indian and Asian Affairs, and holds more than one Ph.D. in the Social Sciences. Dr. Bisram helped organize seminars and presented

papers at scores of academic conferences in India, and was a guest lecturer at many universities in India. He has visited India countless times.

I don’t think any Guyanese has visited India as often as he did.

He managed to establish and maintain close, highlevel contacts in India. He was successful in getting the Indian government to issue statements on violations of human rights and election rigging in Guyana.

He also successfully lobbied the Indian government to increase financial assistance and educational scholarships for Guyanese.

Govt. to tender for another component of GTE project - Jagdeo

As the Government of Guyana (GoG) move ahead with its much vaunted US-multibillion Wales, West Bank Demerara Gas-toEnergy (GTE) project–Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday disclosed that soon the government will tender for another component of the project.

As previously reported the GTE project will encompass three major aspects, that is, the pipeline to transport the gas to Wales; the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) facility that will treat and separate the gas, and the power plant to generate the electricity. Notably, so far, Guyanese have been told that the pipeline aspect, which is being pursued by US-oil major ExxonMobil, will cost around US$1.3 billion and the government's aspect is expected to cost around US$700M – both price tags are scheduled to increase.

During his press conference Jagdeo stated that the government will soon be tendering for a transmission line. He explained that the transmission line will be used to transport electricity from Wales to Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Jagdeo said, “separately we are going to go out soon for the transmission main to bring the

power across from Wales to a substation in Eccles and then to distribute around the country that will be tendered shortly...”

In another update on the ambitious GTE project, the Vice President disclosed that the government had hired two

hire two firms to evaluate the technical aspect of the bid due to the fact that the government does not have the expertise to do so. pursuing natural gas projects in the Region is costlier than transitioning to renewable energy.

It states that an expansion of renewable energy sources instead of continuing a fossil fuel path, even with what has been promoted as 'clean' natural gas, would be by far the best choice for the Region in terms of costs, jobs, and Green House Gas (GHG) emission reductions.

The report stated too, that investing in renewable energy largely outweighs economic, social and climate benefits of natural gas for energy generation.

Jagan’s New Global Human Order was never taken seriously B

y the time he got into office in October 1992, Cheddi Jagan was wise enough to know that he could not endear himself to the international community by proposing policies which could be conceived as not being socialist.

By then the socialist empire had crumbled. Jagan, long an avowed socialist, knew that the building of socialism was no longer possible in his country. This was so not only because of the demise of the communist empire but also because of the state of the Guyanese economy which was being stifled by growing external debt and a devastated economy.

However, Jagan could not abandon his left wing global outlook. The New Global Human Order which he proposed was an attempt to disguise his socialist ambitions. His choice of a name for his proposal was uncreative. But the NGHO’s main flaw was that it was not properly conceptualized.

These defects would have contributed to it not being well received. Another reason was that the NGHO sounded much like a heralding back to the call for a New International Economic Order (NIEO).

The Declaration for the establishment of the NIEO

was actually adopted by the United Nations in 1974.

It underscored the point that the then global order had been shaped by the predecolonization order.

Most of the developing countries argued that the then existing global economic system had been created at a time when most of them were still colonies and as such was in conflict with the new global order which was being shaped by the increasing numbers of newly-independent states in the international system.

The NEIO therefore was essentially about the newly independent states being able to exercise sovereignty and the freedom to develop their countries, and for the developed world to support that development through making assistance available.

The New International Economic Order represented a call for greater recognition of the sovereign equality of states, the right of countries to be free to develop the economic systems of their choice, full control of states over their resources, the right to self-determination and liberation from foreign domination and oppression and the need for developing countries to have access to resources which are to be used for their development.

Jagan’s NGHO was different. It was underscored by the need for developing

countries to acquire resources to eradicate poverty and inequality. It was not simply about the right to development but securing human development. Thus it was not only about resources for development but the content to which those resources should be applied – eradicating poverty and reducing inequality. Jagan did not advocate the dismantling of the existing capitalist order, as so many of his left-wing colleagues had done.

He was much wiser.

Instead, he borrowed extensively from a number of critics of the capitalist and imperialist system and used their proposals to call for a reform of the international order.

Jagan’s NGHO was not original. The idea of a pollution tax was not his suggestion. It had been touted for a long time. But that tax was not the centerpiece of his tax proposals. That honour went to the Tobin Tax. The Tobin Tax had been proposed by Nobel Laureate, James Tobin and was intended to stabilize the value of the currency.

At the time the tax was proposed, it would have been impractical to implement.

But that did not diminish its attraction to Jagan more than a decade later. He saw as the

He did not bother to put a dollar figure to his

environmental tax; it was a peripheral measure dwarfed by the significance of the Tobin tax and cuts in military expenditure.

Jagan’s NGHO did not gain much traction. Its title gave the impression that it was aged and outdated concept dug up from some old archive. . It needed a modern touch which Jagan was never able to provide.

But his timing was bad also.

If he had been alive during the Asian financial crisis,

perhaps his adoption of the Tobin Tax may have gained greater traction.

But in the early postCold war years, with neoliberalism basking in the demise of communism, Jagan was never going to be taken seriously.

Guyana does not need anti-freeze coolant

I

was at the pet section of Giftland Supermarket to buy a harness for a stray dog that emerged in the compound where I live. We adopted him and gave him the name Sammy. Sammy is amazingly sweet.

Right next to the pet section, I saw motor vehicle items. Radiator anti-freeze coolant was selling at $8000 for a large bottle. Can you imagine a Guyanese going into the store in Saudia Arabia and asking for a

winter jacket? If you can’t imagine it, then I suggest you start doing so. Guyanese are a sad nationality.

They do not sell winter jackets in countries that never get cold temperatures.

In hot temperatures like in Guyana, vehicles do not carry anti-freeze coolant. All humans in Guyana know that you do not buy a cup of ice-cream and leave it out of the fridge.

All humans know that when a little fire in the yard brews, you do not douse the

flame with gasoline but water.

If all humans in Guyana know about the ice-cream and gasoline stupidities, why aren’t all vehicle owners in Guyana know we are a hot country so vehicles do not need anti-freeze coolant in their radiators?

They should know they don’t need anti-freeze coolant because of the word itself, “anti-freeze.” Our radiators in Guyana do not need anti-freeze coolant because Guyana never goes

even near to freezing temperature.

Climate changes are creating confusion in the world. In Guyana, you cannot plan construction based on the two rainy seasons – May/June – November/December. But even in rainy seasons where the country is flooded and everybody got to wade through the waters, Guyana does not experience cold weather.

Go any afternoon on the seawall between the bandstand and the pump station, after it rained the entire day, you will see Guyanese with their normal wear including short-pants.

The scientific fact is Guyana does not become cold even in the rainy seasons.

So why do people buy anti-freeze coolant? That is a type of product that is needed in countries where the temperature drops way below zero and you and everything around you freeze.

What the anti-freeze chemical does is prevent the water in the vehicle from freezing. I have seen antifreeze coolant selling in stores for decades now yet I do not understand why Dr. Marlon Cole never banned it.

Marlon is a personal friend of mine and over the years, we would meet in the National Park often and chat.

He is gone and I still do not know why I never raised the absurdity of Guyana

importing antifreeze coolant.

In all honesty, do you know what coolant I put in my car and done with the advice given to me decades ago by my mechanic, “Smallie” Frederick Kissoon of Bel Air village? I going to buy an ice-cream buy a red coolant from my friend Lalta Gainda from cake.

No matter how high you his hardware store near to where I live on UG Road. It put your AC on in the car, cost about $700 years ago, once you are driving in a hot then it went up and now I climate with an iced-cream think it is about $800 or cake, it will melt. But I guess the most brilliant $900 for a large bottle.

As impacts accelerate, adapting to climate change must become a global priority – UNEP report As climate impacts intensify across the globe, nations must dramatically increase funding and implementation of actions designed to help vulnerable nations and communities adapt to the climate storm, according to a new United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report.

Released ahead of COP27 – the latest round of climate talks taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt – The Adaptation Gap Report 2022: Too Little, Too Slow – Climate adaptation failure puts world at risk, finds that global efforts in adaptation planning, financing and implementation are not keeping pace with the growing risks.

"Adaptation needs in the developing world are set to skyrocket to as much as $340 billion a year by 2030. Yet adaptation support today

stands at less than one-tenth of that amount. The most vulnerable people and communities are paying the price. This is unacceptable," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement on the release of the Adaptation Gap Report.

"Adaptation must be treated with a seriousness that reflects the equal worth of all members of the human family. It's time for a global climate adaptation overhaul that puts aside excuses and picks up the toolbox to fix the problems," he added. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP, said, “Climate change is landing blow after blow upon h u m a n i t y, a s w e s a w throughout 2022, most viscerally in the floods that put much of Pakistan under water. The world must urgently reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit the

impacts of climate change.

But we must also urgently increase efforts to adapt to

the impacts that are already here and those to come.”

20 witnesses to testify at elections COI Approximately twenty witnesses are expected to take the stand in the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) established to inquire into the March 2o20 Regional and General Elections.

The CoI which opened on Thursday will be livestreamed. The CoI is being conducted by Justice of the Appeal (retired) of Turks and Caicos Stanley John, who is the chairman of the inquiry as well as former Chancellor of the Judiciary (Guyana), Carl Singh and High Court Judge (Belize) and former Justice of Appeal (ag) in the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, Godfrey P. Smith.

The Commission is tasked with determining what attempts, if any, were made to obstruct, frustrate, subvert and prevent the counting,

ascertainment and tabulation of votes polled and a declaration of the true results of Electoral District No. 4 as prescribed by the Law. They will also enquire into the conduct of the Chief Election Officer and other Election Officials.

“It is a matter of public knowledge that the tabulation and verification process for declaring the outcome of those elections were mired in intense controversy, unprecedented in the history of Guyana,” the chairman said. He noted that the five-month election saga attracted criticisms and condemnation from global players including national observer missions, diplomats, international organisations including from CARICOM and the OAS

General Secretariat.

He said it is therefore a responsibility of the commissioners to discharge their duties carefully with professionalism, efficiency, thoroughness, fairness, objectively and impartiality.

Justice John remarked “We are aware that much has been said about these events by many people from diverse places and organizations, but this inquiry has no case to prove; it is interested in the truth and in fair conclusion based on evidence properly analysed.”

“In making our findings, we will have regard only to such matters as are substantiated by credible evidence with unstinting regard for rules and natural justice, fundamental fairness especially as it relates to

He said the lingering question is whether the State will discontinue the charges against the former Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, his Deputy Roxane Mayers and Returning Office, Clairmont Mingo. The country's VicePresident, Bharrat Jagdeo, conveyed the unlikelihood that the State will take that route, specifically as it relates to the charges levelled against Lowenfield. It is expected that a similar stance would be taken about the charges against Mayers and Mingo. “The State, as far as I know, is not going to ask that the charges against Lowenfield be dropped.

There is no such intention – that I know of,” he said during a press conference on Thursday.

breaking into private jet Albert Rajram called 'Bunny' of Circuit Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, who was arrested on Monday for allegedly breaking into a private jet that was on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) tarmac, was jailed on Thursday for 36 months.

Forty-three-year-old Rajram made his first court appearance on Thursday, at the Diamond/ Grove Magistrate's Court, before Magistrate Judy Latchman, to face two counts of simple larceny. It is alleged that between October 26 and October 28 at the CJIA, he stole a quantity of items valued $2,160,000.

Rajram pleaded guilty to both charges and was then sentenced to 36 months

imprisonment for each count. The charges will run concurrently.

Tucville 'Big Yard' residents welcome relocation to 'safer' community

amilies of Tucville's 'Big Y a r d ' , Georgetown, have welcomed the government's move to relocate them to housing schemes after they were temporarily placed in the area years ago following a fire in Tiger Bay. On Wednesday, President Irfaan Ali conducted a walkabout and met with a group of residents. He assured them that all steps will be taken to ensure they are relocated to safer and healthier communities. The area has 24 households. Last year, the Housing Ministry's Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) conducted an assessment of the area and commenced the process of allocating lands to the residents there.

One of the residents said she was happy to be located to a better environment. She expressed gratitude to the government for moving ahead with the relocation process.

Another resident commended President Ali and the team for visiting the

compound to have a firsthand look at the living condition.

The resident said, “you are doing a great job sir, I like what you are doing right now.

I wouldn't stifle my conscience. That's power.”

The president reminded that, “there is nothing like urban youth, ghetto youth and country youth, a youth is a youth and we have to create the environment and the youths must take the responsibility of making use of the opportunity to be part of a positive change.” Before he engaged with residents, President Ali and his team visited the Tucville Community Centre Ground, where he announced major

upgrades to the facility.

He said that the government will also install an ICT Hub in the area.

Youths could pursue studies through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) programme. “We want people to live positive lives.

This is what we want in this country. There is enough opportunity for people to live positive and meaningful lives in every community. Whether it's Tucville or Canje anywhere, we want everybody to be involved and we will create an e n v i ro n m e n t i n w h i c h everyone lives positive lives,” President Ali affirmed. Additionally, the Ministry of Public Works will visit the areas to further assess the drainage issues.

Man blames dizziness for crashing boss pick-up

Raj’s pick-up and the parked car overboard at Anna Regina.

A driver on Thursday reportedly claimed that a feeling of dizziness caused him to crash his employer’s pick-up into a parked car and then plunged it into a trench at Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, Region two.

The driver was identified only as Raj, an employee of Shawn’s Mini Mart on the Essequibo Coast. Raj reportedly crashed his employer’s pick-up around 10:30hrs.

According to reports, Raj was reportedly driving the pick-up at a normal rate of speed along the Anna Regina Public Road when he

suddenly lost control and crashed into a car that was parked beside the road and close to a trench. As a result, both the car and the pickup ended up into the trench.

Eyewitnesses rushed to Raj’s assistance and pulled him out from the partially submerged vehicle.

He was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital for a check-up and then discharged.

When asked by his employer what happened, Raj reportedly said he was feeling dizzy just before the accident.

$75M estimated to build two water supply systems in Reg. 9 With $4.9 billion allocated from this year’s budget to improve water supply networks across the country, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is gearing up to spend some $75 million to establish two new water supply projects in Region Nine.

During the recent opening of tenders, it was revealed that one of the projects will be situated in the Karadaruna Village, at an estimated cost of $48 million, while the other will be in Guyana Water Inc. Water Supply Improvement Project in Karadarunau, Region Nine.

UK firm ordered to pay millions for bribing African officials for oil

By Michael Race BBC - A UK subsidiary of mining giant Glencore has been ordered to pay more than £275M for bribing officials in African countries to get access to oil.

The company paid $26M (£23M) through agents and employees to officials of crude oil firms in Nigeria, Cameroon and Ivory Coast between 2011 and 2016.

Prosecutors said Glencore Energy UK employees and agents used private jets to transfer cash to pay the bribes.

Glencore Energy UK pleaded guilty to seven corruption offences in June.It was ordered to pay a fine of £182.9M by Judge Peter Fraser at Southwark Crown Court, who also approved £93.5m to be confiscated from the company.

Along with five charges of bribery, the subsidiary

admitted charges of failing to prevent agents from using bribes to secure oil contracts in Equatorial Guinea and South Sudan.Judge Fraser said the offences Glencore had pleaded guilty to represented "corporate corruption on a widespread scale, deploying very substantial sums of money in bribes".

"The corruption is of extended duration, and took place across five separate countries in West Africa, but had its origins in the West Africa oil trading desk of the defendant in London. It was endemic amongst traders on that particular desk," he added.

Glencore, founded in 1974, is one of the largest multinational commodity trading and mining companies in the world.

Its subsidiaries operate in more than 35 countries, but Glencore's London office

primarily dealt in oil, with one of its crude oil divisions responsible for West Africa.

ormer police officer Jermaine Bristol was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2018 stabbing death of his reputed wife, Shanece Lawrence at their Lot 272 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown home.

The sentence was handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court. Bristol, 38, was represented by attorney-at-law Everton Singh Lammy while Muntaz Ali represented the State.

Bristol had confessed to murdering Lawrence on August 22, 2018 at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown.

Detectives found the woman's body lying in a pool of blood with a black knife stuck in her neck.

"For years and across the globe, Glencore pursued profits to the detriment of national governments in some of the poorest countries in the world. The company's ruthless greed and criminality have been rightfully exposed," she added.

In May, the firm agreed to a $1.1bn (£900M) settlement in the US over a scheme to bribe officials in seven countries during the course of a decade.

COURTS Pee Wee U11 Tournament enters quarterfinals tomorrow The Petra organized Courts Pee Wee Under-11 School Football Tournament enters the quarterfinal stage tomorrow, Saturday, at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue.

Before the top eight spring into action, the remainder of teams from the round-of-16 will commence battle for positions 9 to 16.

The day starts at 11:30 hrs with two matches scheduled to be played. Tucville and COLAACO fight for 15th and 16th while Craig Primary and Timehri go head to head for 13th and 14th.

At 12:20 hrs, Smiths Memorial and Winfer Gardens clash for 11th and 12th while Den Amstel and Mocha col-

lide in a match to decide 9th and 10th.

The first two quarterfinal encounters to be simultaneously contested starts at 13:10 hrs. Soesdyke and Enterprise are pegged to face each other, while West Ruimveldt and North Georgetown lock horns to see who advances.

Qualfon played undefeated to win the Cumming Electrical Company/PKF Barcellos, Narine & Co. sponsored 6over tape ball competition Saturday last at the DUrban Park Tarmac.

Qualfon defeated Georgetown School of Nursing (GSON) by 45 runs in the finale to reign supreme. The winning side batted first and post 106 3 in their six overs. When GSON replied, they only managed to muster 61 5 in their allotted overs.

Meanwhile, Cummings Lodge was victorious in the Bible Club Competition that was hosted simultaneously.

Cummings Lodge batted f i r s t a g a i n s t Z e e b u rg Secondary and posted 38 0 in their six overs before they

returned to successfully restrict the opposition from achieving their target.

In the semifinal stage, Cummings Lodge defeated St. Roses High in an entertaining super over while Zeeburg got past Plaisance.

But the winner of the clash will need help from others in Group 2 to advance.

Ramnauth disappointed with ECBs non-approval for youth tournament Founder of the Development Youth Cricket League in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Essequibo Coast, Devon Ramnauth, has expressed disappointment with the Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) for not approving the Under-19 T20 tournament.

It was inaugurated in 2020 and had one competition in 2021 when Q u e e n s t o w n Yo u t h s emerged victorious.

According to the former Guyana Under-19 cricketer Ramnauth, the main objective is to help with the development of the Coasts cricket and at the same time exposing the young, aspiring cricketers.

Ramnauth further divulged that the tournament was supposed to begin very shortly with over six teams ready to participate including the defending champions, but the ECB is

not collaborating on this occasion.

Ramnauth stated that he was in contact with the President of the ECB Dileep Singh to have the competition started but Singh informed Ramnauth that the ECB cannot approve any private organisation to run any professional competition in its jurisdiction, a stipulation by the International Cricket Council. That decision by

Devon Ramnauth the ECB was made unanimously at the last meeting, Sunday.

Ramnauth mentioned that he was deflated with this kind of revelation by the ECB. “I [am] hugely disappointed with the ECB; why not brought about this kind of things when we first started, why now; this is about development of our cricket, this about giving the young cricketers more opportunities to play the game on a consistent basis,” Ramnauth lamented.

Ramnauth, who also represented Essequibo at the senior Inter-County level, informed that he requested the approval since the ECB intervened to ensure the tournament is approved.

“We want to do things professionally, so when the ECB contacted me, I said

okay but I never expected them to not approve a tournament of this magnitude; my League is non-profitable and my sole objective again is to see the young cricketers play the game as regularly as possible, so I am very surprised that I can no longer proceed with this years tournament; I really feel for the youths,” a disgruntled Ramnauth expressed.

Ramnauth mentioned too to his astonishment that the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. lauded the initiative and other cricketing dignitaries and now the ECB is batting at the other end.

According to Ramnauth, the first edition was a massive success and a lot of past Essequibo players and sponsors have thrown their

support behind the game and were looking forward to the see the continuity of the competition.

“I must say thanks to all who played a big role in the initial tournament; to all the sponsors and supporters; it was indeed a huge success and we were really anticipating another eventful competition; and this initiative by me is about the Coast (Region 2) and not t h e e n t i r e c o u n t y, ” Ramnauth declared.

Ramnauth also singled out long-serving cricket adminis trator Trevis Simon, the lead organiser of the tournament.

A c c o r d i n g t o Ramnauth, Simon was just exceptional in his organisation and he has him as the front-man for this season too.

Mahadeo, Singh lead CCC 2 to victory in ESCLs competition Former Senior Essequibo Inter-County player Prashad Mahadeo slammed a brilliant 70 to help Caribbean Cricket Club (CCC) 2 beat Sunrisers Masters by eight wickets last Sunday in the 2022 Essequibo Softball Cricket League (ESCL) Over-40, T20 competition.

Playing at Zorg Beach on the Essequibo Coast (Region Two), the left-handed Mahadeo clobbered 14 fours as CCC 2 reached 204-4 off 16-overs.

Team Guyana optimistic of success at FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup as tournament bounces off today in Miami

By Rawle Toney in Miami (compliments of: MVP Sports and Shi Oil) Guyanas male and female 3x3 teams at the FIBA AmeriCup Basketball tournament in Miami, Florida, are all oozing with optimism, as they head into action today at the AT&T East Plaza in the FTX Arena.

Today, from 9:55 am, Gordon James, Nikkoloi Smith and Shelroy Thomas, will come up against Aruba.

They will have to be without their premier player, Gordon James, who will not arrive in Miami in time for the sides opening match-up.

However, James, the most experienced and accomplished player on the team, will be on hand when Guyana square-up against Ecuador (9:50 am) and Haiti (11:05 am) tomorrow.

Speaking to Kaieteur News before a light shootaround at the playing venue yesterday, Thomas

said the tournament presents another opportunity for them to put Guyana on the international stage, taking into consideration that some of the best 3x3 players in the world, based in the FIBA Americas zone will be competing.

At last years inaugural tournament, the men narrowly missed out on a chance of advancing to the Main Draw. Thomas said this bunch does not feel pressured to better the countrys performance in 2021.

“I think among the players we are confident, because we have players who wouldve competed in this type of competition before, so we’re confident about the team that we have,” Thomas said.

Smith, who is making his tournament debut, but suited up for Guyana in Turkey at the Islamic Games this year, noted, “Looking forward to

this one. I think this team is well balanced. We have Delroy (James) who is the best one-on-one scorer and a lot of people will be on him, so it will give myself and Shelroy the opportunity to be open, we just have to make our shots.”

With only one team advancing from the qualifiers, Guyana will need to finish on top for a chance to face Canada and Mexico in Group C of the Main Draw which will also be played tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the womens team, playing in the tournaments Main Draw, will face an uphill battle against the USA and Colombia, especially since the side is short-handed.

President of Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Michael Singh, told Kaieteur News that Jamaicy Ogle, one of four members on the team, was denied her US visa.

By Sean Devers in Trinidad None of the two Guyanese Squash players who participated in the inaugural QPCC Premiere PSA Squash tournament here in Trinidad are in contention for the winners US$6,000 prize.

The Tournament, which is being held at Racquet Centre at Queens Park Cricket Club, commenced on Tuesday and is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

This is the first such tournament to be stage here and some of participants play squash for a living.

On the opening Night Trinidad based Guyanese Julian Chin lost to his opponent from Germany while Jason Ray Khalil beat Trinidadian Zachary Locquan to advance to second round of the KnockOut tournament.

However, in nights match, Khalil lost 3-1 to

The two teams will face each other on Sunday, November 6, from 18:00 hrs at the Ministry of Education Ground while Presidents College and Cummings Lodge collide in the match that precedes from 16:00 hrs.

Yesterday, the captains and coaches of those two sides met in a pre-match conference to speak of their preparations and expectations for the much anticipated showdown.

Currently, CWSS are on top of the League with 15 points from five wins and a

loss, while Golden Grove, on 14 points, have four wins and two draws. Presidents College are fourth on 11 points, while Cummings Lodge sits in fifth with nine points.

For the remainder of the teams, Dolphin (11) are third, North Ruimveldt (10) sixth, West Ruimveldt (1) are in seventh and Friendship (0) finished eighth.

GCF forges ahead despite former President’s claims of malicious acts - Farley suspended for flagrant breaches of his responsibilities

Former Guyana Chess Federation President, Frankie Farley, has entered into a game of chess with the fraternity following his removal from the Presidential and Director posts by way of majority vote at a reconvened Board of Directors Meeting.

According to a release the GCF, “A motion was approved by majority decision, (5 for, 1 abstention and 0 dissents) to remove Mr. Farley from the Board of Directors of the Guyana Chess Federation Inc., as well as from holding the office of The President of the Guyana Chess Federation with immediate effect on October 20th 2022.”

However, Farley recently disclosed that he has notified the governing body for the sport, The

sponsored tournament are in kind to the tune of $500,000 for the winner, $300,000 for the runner up, $200,000 for the third place finisher and $100,000 for fourth.

International Chess Federation (FIDE), of alleged malicious acts portrayed by some of the board members.

A statement by Farley disclosed his retort to the acts and the steps he has taken since it was revealed on October 27, that the Vice President, Anand Raghunauth, has now filled the Presidency position.

Farleys statement added: “I consider these board members actions to be null and void. My claims were filed on October 27th, 2022, with the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission against the respective board members of the Guyana Chess Federation.”

“The actions by these specific board members are disturbing and can have far reaching implications for all federations if they are

allowed to go without consequence.

Many federations in the region, as well as the Continental body, are already aware of these activities by members of the GCF board and are looking on in interest and disbelief to see how these concerning matters will be addressed. I have already engaged my lawyers, who will be taking all the necessary actions to protect the constitution of the Guyana Chess Federation.”

“Rest assured that I will continue to function as President of the Guyana Chess Federation and remain yours in service while awaiting the final decision of FIDE,” it ended.

But, just hours after Farleys statement, the GCF replied with a lengthy elaboration on the issue.

According to the release, “This motion was passed pursuant to clause 6 a (iii) of the GCFs Constitution.

This action was deemed necessary by the Board given Mr. Farleys flagrant breaches of his responsibilities as set out in Clause 8 c (vii) of the GCFs Constitution (“To abide by and

carry out the instructions of the Federation”).”

It continued: “The latest example of these failures was his decision to participate in the recently held CCA Assembly in Costa Rica despite the clear and unambiguous decision of the Board not to attend or participate in the Assembly. Mr. Farley was suspended from acting in the capacity of the President of the Guyana Chess Federation to give him time to present information on how his overseas trip was funded and the identity of the person who paid for his airfare and hotel accommodations.” “It should be noted that Farley had admitted to a third party funding his trip. Mr. Farley failed to fulfill his commitment to provide the board with the relevant source documents to prove how the expenses for his trip was paid, so as to allay the grave concerns that the funding of his trip may have constituted breaches of the FIDE ETHICS CODE, inclusive of those set out in Articles 6 (E), 6 (F), 6 (H), 7, 8 (B 8.8).” The Federation has decided

“The Board of the Guyana Chess Federation stands by its decision. Mr. Farleys belief that he is still the President of the GCF is unfortunate. The GCF has made great strides in taking chess to another level in Guyana and we would like to continue to provide the opportunity to the chess players, young and old alike.

We would like to assure the public that the Guyana Chess Federation Inc. is functioning and continuing to provide a service to the chess players in Guyana,” the Federation concluded.

Farley was re-elected in November, 2021, to serve another two-year term after he was first elected in August, 2019. When he was re-elected, his board included VP Raghunauth, Company Secretary Marcia Lee and Directors Yolander Persaud, Davion Mars, Irshad Mohammed and Loris Nathoo.

First-half exchanges were fast and furious and the only missing component of the exchanges were goals which underscored the tightness of the respective teams back four and goalkeeper. The second half was proving to be almost similar until the 8th minute when Police broke the deadlock with a Jemar Harrigan goal. This undoubtedly brought much relief to their fans and supporters whilst putting pressure on their opponent.

But, the lads from West Ruimveldt never gave up, and for much of the game whilst they

enjoyed the better of the exchanges were not able to be effective in the final third. However, this changed in the 86th minute when elder statesman Eusi Phillips got the space that he needed and rocked the nets with a well-directed shot to knot the scores at 1-1.

Phillips goal pushed the game into extra time which meant that both teams now had an additional 30 minutes to really make it count.

As it turned out though, it was the Tigers that roared to victory as they taped in two unanswered goals, thanks to Malachi Granum in the 105th minute and the sealer from Jermain Beckles in the 120th minute. So, the platform is now set for Sundays semi-finals with whats expected to be an evening of furious exchanges as the respective winners will earn the right to clash for the title as the best in the City.

raffic has been a major concern plaguing most large-scale events especially with patrons traversing during the day. Because of the size and nature of this years GMRSC Race of Champions carded for Sunday 13th November at the South Dakota Race Track, AJM Enterprise has paid particular attention to the traffic situation from Georgetown. Because of the overwhelming request from international drivers and supporters AJMs planning committee was able to acquire the entire Splashmins Resort Hotel to further ease the congestion on the East Bank.

Mere 10 minutes away from the South Dakota racetrack, Splashmins Resort is nestled in the plains of Madewini wetlands located on the Linden, Soesdyke Highway.

This man made resort was officially opened in April of 2000 by the Ashmins group of

companies.

It was created from the pure swampland through which flows the Madewini stream.

In the beginning trees were cut and used to fill back the nine feet swamp. This project was first referred to as a “Mad mans vision” as many thought that CEO Lennox John had to been crazy to entertain the idea that a swamp could have been filled to create a Resort.

He made this vision a reality and earned his reputation for original innovation in construction. The Madewini Lake was dug to 500 feet wide and one mile long to accommodate various water activities and water life. Also another 2 miles of creek was cleared to accommodate boat rides in the wetland savannahs.
