Advocate for a better oil deal, Glenn Lall has criticised President Irfaan Ali for what he said was a missed opportunity when the Guyanese leader during an interview with Al-Jazeera told the world that this country’s story is not about oil and gas, but rather eco-

tourism and agriculture.

Despite his bold declaration, Guyana over the years has struggled in both sectors.

An analysis by this year’s midyear report showed that eight contributors to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) have

declined between 2019 and 2022; these include sugar, rice, other crops, livestock, forestry, gold, manufacturing and the services sector.

According to the report, the fisheries sector this year performed better than last year during the mid-year s t u d y, w h i l e b a u x i t e production during the first half of this year was equivalent to its output during the same period last year.

An examination of the g o v e r n m e n t ’s r e p o r t indicates consecutive contractions for the sugar industry, which in 2019 accounted for 0.4% of the country’s GDP at half year; 0.3% in 2020; 0.2% in 2021 and 0.1% in 2022. Rice in 2019 contributed 5.3% to the country’s GDP at midyear; 3.7% in 2020; 3.5% in 2021 and only 2% this year. In 2019, during the first six

months, other crops accounted for 14.5 percent of the country’s GDP; 9.5% in 2020; 7.7% in 2021 and 7.5 percent at half year in 2022.

The Ministry of Finance M i d - Ye a r R e p o r t a l s o explains that livestock in 2019 added 2.5% to the growth rate; 1.6% in 2020 and 2022 but reduced to 1.3% this year. In 2019, the forestry sector recorded a 0.9% production rate at half year which dropped to 0.5% in 2020; 0.4% in 2021 and a further 0.3% in 2022.

Guyana’s Local Content ‘Any President worth his salt earnings over $129 billion will focus on oil’ - Norton says ...more than 350 businesses added to register – Secretariat The Local Content Secretariat disclosed yesterday that earnings for Guyanese nationals and companies in the oil sector are well over $129B. It said this follows a preliminary assessment of its data thus far.

Secretariat Director, Martin Pertab said the figure represents 23% of Guyana’s GY$552.9 billion budget for 2022.

Additionally, the Local Content Secretariat revealed that it has issued some 354 Local Content Certificates to suppliers of the nation’s oil and gas sector. This document confirms that the regulator is satisfied that the holder of the certificate is a genuine Guyanese national or Guyanese company. In keeping with the provisions of the legislation, all certified Guyanese companies are published via the Local Content Register, which is public for all to scrutinize.

Pertab said the unit continues to work alongside and engage with contractors, sub-contractors, licensees and Guyanese suppliers, to ensure that the goals of the Act are met. Local content, he underscored, gives Guyanese businesses a fair opportunity to directly tap into and benefit from Guyana’s multi-billiondollar petroleum sector.

Internal assessments also

show that Guyanese companies supply goods and services across 37 of the 40 areas ringfenced for nationals in the First Schedule of the Local Content Act, which was passed on December 31, 2021.

The First Schedule ring-fences 40 categories of work for Guyanese participation, which include: food supply, rental of office space, accommodation, insurance, accounting, legal services, engineering and machining, aviation support, public relations, manpower and crewing s e r v i c e s , dredging services, ventilation, environmental services and studies, and transportation. The foregoing categories carry varying percentages for participation that must be secured by companies in the oil sector by the end of 2022.

Furthermore, the law serves to provide for the implementation of local content obligations on persons engaged in petroleum operations or related activities in the petroleum sector; prioritises Guyanese nationals and Guyanese companies in the procurement of goods and services for the enhancement of the value chain of the petroleum sector; and enables local capacity development.

Importantly, it provides for the investigation, supervision,

co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of, and participation in, local content in Guyana; promotes competitiveness and encourages the creation of related industries that will sustain the social and economic development of Guyana.

Overseeing the implementation of the legislation is the Local Content Secretariat alongside an InterAgency Advisory Committee.

The Secretariat has several functions, which include developing and maintaining measures for the effective implementation of local content by Contractors, SubContractors and Licensees; developing and implementing strategies that will give preference to, or ensure equal treatment of, Guyanese nationals and Guyanese companies; and conducting market analysis.

Those were the statements made by President Irfaan Ali in an exclusive interview with a Middle East news outlet, Al Jazeera last week. While the President has made it clear that his focus is not on the country’s oil and gas resources, but on boosting agriculture and tourism for the country, Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton, has warned that the Head-of-State is making a “fundamental” mistake by not fixing his attention on that area to ensure Guyanese get more for its wealth.

Norton was at the time responding to a question from this newspaper during his weekly press conference on Tuesday, when he explained that, Ali’s focus should be on effectively managing each sector. The Opposition Leader reasoned, “Any President who is worth his salt will know you have to give each sector the attention it deserves.” He went on to point out that the capacity of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must be developed for the body to be able to perform

Chains around our necks

W

e think that the Opposition AFC is on the right track, but is only half right. This is prompted by the caption “‘PPP borrowing spree chaining our children’s necks to debt’ - AFC says as total debt to increase 8% by year-end” -KN October 31).

Debt is bad, and more debt is worse because it adds more burdens to the already indebted.

And when borrowings come to represent runaway levels, then there is a debt disaster in the making. It does not matter whether it is at the individual or company or governmental level, the only sensible thing that can be said is the more the debt, the more serious is the difficulty that lies ahead when it is time to repay.

The AFC’s position is that our children will be chained to massive debt, a position with which we agree, and stated often. But it is not just future children, for what is being borrowed now impacts all Guyanese today, whether they did or didn’t vote for the PPPC to return to power. Adult Guyanese will be responsible for paying back some of that debt when the debt servicing starts. Though some debt will have to be repaid in the future, some loan repayments start soon, if not right now. So, it is not just the children’s necks that are being chained, but ours also.

This is how present and future citizens are enslaved, so that pet projects and pie-in-the-sky projects and pipedream projects all get funded with borrowings that are occurring today at breakneck speed.

We have repeatedly cautioned against this uninterrupted debt splurge, and the dangers of it. Our recommendation to the PPPC Government that it goes slowly, study carefully and decide more selectively on which projects are a ‘must have’ as opposed to those that can wait for another day. Our wellintended advice continues to fall on deaf ears.

Leaving aside the thinking that the massive debt binge facilitates wholesale governmental corruptions, we note the volatile nature of oil prices, and the prolonged slumps that have visited poor, excited Third World countries, when their hysterical leaders are driven into debt frenzies, only for default to rear first its ugly head, and then bite painfully.

Nigeria is one of the best poster children for overdoing things with debt, and this is while recognising its immense oil riches. Examine the leaders of Nigeria reduced to their hands and knees in begging for more billions so that they can offer limited relief to their hurting citizens.

Right here, the PPPC Government has thrown all cautions to the wind, while scorning all calls for a more tempered debt approach. There is no project that appeals to the President or one minister or another that can wait, but which just has to be fulfilled now, which means more millions in American dollars must be borrowed. On an almost daily basis, we report in this newspaper of some school, some bridge, some road that strikes the fancy of some minister and for which many millions are borrowed.

Because of our oil discoveries, all financial institutions everywhere are rushing to answer the PPPC Government’s debt addictions and demons. No financial institution is saying ‘no’ to Guyana, not with the borrowing gravy train that Guyana has become, and the Government is deliriously cashing in with both fists.

Debt has been, and will continue to be, the curse of impoverished undeveloped countries. Debt is a newer, smoother, and cleaner version of slavery. That is, when it comes due, and there is scrambling around to find the money to repay, except that it is not there. The AFC estimates that Guyana’s debt will increase by 8%, which amounts to approximately another US$250 million more borrowed and owed.

Regarding what lasting value the Guyanese people are getting for the billions borrowed in their name, using their oil assets as collateral, the doubts accumulate. What is beyond doubt is that notwithstanding all the oil money received (and withdrawn), all the debts taken out, rank-and-file Guyanese are still to experience the prosperity that everyone believes should be theirs. The same could be said for their struggles, and this is considering the glittering economic forecasts and the new debts taken out.

SOCU: A new crime fighting unit with different clothes DEAR EDITOR, I note developments originating within the SOCU subgroup of the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Though the days are early, there is a certain ring that emerges and echoes in its actions.

As I look on at SOCU, there is alarm that it has exhibited the sinister eeriness that once graced another GPF unit that was feared, hated and, it has to be said, was misused or misled or mistaken in the zeal, oftentimes unlawful, with which that now disbanded unit proceeded about its tough tasks. I point to and speak of the notorious ‘Black Clothes’ police that once existed in troubled and agitated Guyana.

Most Guyanese living here or abroad are most familiar with the exploits of the old Black Clothes people.

Its members were very visible and palpable in their potency, complete in their power and authority to intimidate, if not outright terrorize.

This included from the law-abiding to the main targets, those suspected of heinous criminal activities.

The colour of the clothes was

their calling card, and they were armed to reinforce the scope of their actions, overcome any objections.

A segment of this society saw them as phantoms in uniform running around and swaggering about in the daylight. I am thinking of the Black Clothes and the heated disputes that it triggered among Guyanese.

Now, though it may a tad on the early side to draw a parallel, I ponder if it is not reborn in the presence of SOCU, but on this occasion and in this time, focused on white collar crime and the people who are believed to have engaged in them.

In SOCU, I am beginning to discern the same startling heavy-handedness, the overweening impatience and intolerances for the inconvenient restraints of what the law requires and respects; such are niceties best observed with lip service, and in the breach. I assert that it was the same modus operandi of the men in black back then. In the simplest terms: get out of the way, get down, and get it over with.

Case closed; move on the next challenge; perhaps the more fitting

word to employ is target or object or obstacle (either way human), instead of challenge. Some Guyanese may be of the belief that this is a tried-and-true method of crime fighting, which produces results.

As we have learned to our pain and regret, things can also go the other way by getting out of hand, with acute deterioration following. To aid in this linking of the past with the present, and both under PPP regimes, the Black Clothes were considered the noblest of ‘crime fighters’ by one corner of an endangered populace, while being thought of as notorious, stone killers in another, and with licence from the State to be just so: official thugs with uniform, badges, and guns.

The Black Clothes had its spearheads, who were hailed as heroes, including one murdered, only for his quick martyrdom to flee in shame, and under the pressure of unrelenting scrutiny and exposure. What transpired in probate court also confirmed that conduct in the unit wasn’t aboveboard.

With this once alternately hallowed and heinous Black

Clothes band of brothers (it was all men) standing as precedent, I am probing as to whether history is repeating itself here today.

Like I said, the body of work and the leader of the pack of attack sleuths in the form of SOCU are still in the growing stages. But I detect some similarities, similar arrogance, and possibly the same outcomes eventually, hopefully not. Some may say white-collar crimes are victimless, bloodless.

But if they only knew, if they could only be honest enough to trace from start to terminal point, and it is only after that and then, there comes appreciation of just how sanguinary white-collar crimes are.

I am all for throwing the book at people. I caution that requisite care should be taken that it is an officially sanctioned tome, and not one that is made up as the road is traveled or that which suits the whims of men (and women) who become a law unto themselves. Just like our more colourful GPF crime fighters of yore.

SOCU is to be watched.

It is economically reckless of any nation to leave natural gas in the ground and move straight to renewable energy DEAR EDITOR, After many months, the peaceful Deepavali celebrations allowed me a chance to glance at one of the daily newspapers in detail.

At the bottom of the front page of one of the newspapers was the headline, “New UN Report warns against gas-to-energy type projects”. This newspaper article piqued my interest. So I took the time to read the entire UN Report.

The UN Report sought to lecture the Latin American countries on what they should and should not do concerning their energy development plan. But history will prove that this same UN conveniently chose not to steer China, India, Europe, Australia and North America for too many decades away from their climate destructive energy development plan.

The mainstream environmentalists have labelled these plans as the primary cause for the current

destruction of the environment.

But I want to focus on my homeland and a significant positive development in the making. From all that I have read, Guyana is trying its best to break free from the environmentally destructive ‘Bunker C’ power generation systems by switching to Natural Gas. No nation could achieve first-world status unless it has a low cost, reliable and uninterrupted power supply. And why should Guyana not dream of such a status in my lifetime?

The facts will clearly illustrate that our energy network is one of the most expensive and unreliable in the Caribbean.

I want to stand with the ideas put forward by the Hon. Vice President Jagdeo, who stated, “there is no path to net-zero without using natural gas as a transition fuel”.

It is economically reckless of any nation to leave natural gas in the

ground and move straight to renewable energy at a hefty cost. In support of Dr. Jagdeo’s suggestions, we must push extremely hard to build the Gas-to-Energy Power Plant before the end of 2024. Any delay will cost this nation billions in lost economic potential.

Let me outline my case for the man in the street: 1. With modern technology, higher-efficient natural gas power plants with low methane leakage rates have been proven to produce half the contribution to global warming compared to fossil fuel plants such as those that currently exist at GPL. Thus, there is real and measurable potential climate benefit in replacing those low-efficiency ‘Bunker C’ gas-guzzling power plants at GPL with higher-efficiency natural gas plants such as the one designed to be built at Wales. The bottom line is that our Green House Gas (GHG) emissions will be

slashed by almost half if we use natural gas at this time at a negligible cost.

2. In pursuit of His Excellency the President’s ambition to expand and build a more resilient and competitive economy by 2030, natural gas is a more sustainable fit into the energy mix.

The academic paper by Professor Xiaochun Zhang et al. (2014) confirms that the economic cost implication to transition the base-load energy of any nation from coal or base fuels such as ‘Bunker C’ (as we are using in Guyana) would cost half as much if we move to natural gas as a bridging fuel rather than transition directly to total renewables. And why not when we have almost free natural gas in Guyana in 2022?

Response from Ninvalle, Yassin to athletes’ complaints unacceptable DEAR EDITOR, Nicolette Fernandes, probably the most successful individual athlete who has represented Guyana within recent years, and Keevin Allicock, one of our more successful boxers, have publicly pointed out that our sports teams and individual athletes representing Guyana at international competitions are seldom

given the support by their respective sporting associations, including the Olympic Association, and, yes, the government, which they deserve and which they must have for success.

Fernandes describes a health emergency situation which arose when our athletes were representing Guyana at the South American Games when the

team was not accompanied by either a doctor or a qualified physio and was dependent on assistance from the doctor of another competing team.

What Nicolette Fernandes describes, unfortunately, has not been the exception, but rather the rule across the board. The excuse has always been, and with some justification, that

there is insufficient money to finance this kind of support. I speak from experience. I had the honour of serving as President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union from 2001- 2006 and, then again, from 2010 – 2012. Rugby is not one of Guyana’s major sports, but, during those years, we produced Rugby Sevens Teams, both men and women, who were

A comprehensive plan needs to be put in place for the crop and animal farmers in Berbice DEAR EDITOR, Crop and animal farming are the two lifeblood industries in Berbice, these two for eons of time have coexisted in harmonious unity, however, in recent times that existence has been strained as the standing crop farms are invaded by the roving animals and this is not going down well for everybody. When the two

husbandry types have to compete for the same geographical space, there is bound to be trouble.

In this regard, the livestock farmers have to seek alternative grazing grounds far away from the crop farms. Now, here is where the real problem steps in as the farmers of larger herds of cattle and ruminants, are faced with the

task of putting their animals out to grazing grounds that are far away from their homes and not being attended to. When the animals are bereft of the watchful eyes of the owners, the problem of animal rustling sets in. As a Berbician myself, I am well acquainted with this situation. Recently, we heard of farmers losing their

livelihood to cattle rustling, and this does not augur well for the industry, something has to be done urgently to bring this situation under control.

There are a few options available and the Government have to play a leading role in putting things in place. Firstly, there can be a putting in place (Continued on page 6)

The Wales-based Gas-toEnergy Power Plant will produce electricity at approximately five (5) US cents per kWh. When you bolt on GPL’s transmission, distribution, and administrative costs, the Guyanese public can benefit from a retail electricity cost at some fourteen (14) US cents per kWh. Compare that to the current price of electricity in Guyana; thirty (30) US cents per kWh. 4. It is basic economics almost free natural gas, readily available, can leave some 50% of the current light bill in the pockets of

every Guyanese electricity consumer.

5. The Gas Pipeline Project will be funded as part of the developmental cost of the oil project. Thus the cash flow implication for the N a t i o n a l Tr e a s u r y i s negligible; no loans, no diversion of funds from other sectors to fund it; and most importantly, no need to tighten the belts of the working class to support it as was done in 1979 when the workers were told: “do you want hydro or do you want $14 minimum wages”?

They never got the hydro and the $14 minimum wage in 1979. This historical comparison serves as a timely reminder of what a

golden opportunity this nation has today in 2022 to build this Gas-to-Energy Power Plant; we must not lose it.

The fact remains that Natural Gas is the bridge fuel and is not the ‘be all and end all’ of the energy transition strategy of this nation and will not be the only ingredient in our future energy mix.

But, what is sure at this point in time, is that the low efficiency ‘Bunker C’ gasguzzling power plants must go, and the faster this happens, the better for the economic transition ambitions of this nation.

Enough said, but I cannot, without a clear

conscience, remain silent on an economically and scientifically sound attempt

by Dr. Jagdeo to provide lower cost and more reliable energy to this nation using a ‘bridge fuel’ called Natural Gas which is in abundance in our jurisdiction. Every patriotic, pro-Guyana, progressive Guyanese must stand up and support the Wales-based Gas-to-Shore Power Generation Project.

I call on all Guyanese to put all of our energies into completing it before 2024.

We too struggled for financing, but, yet managed with the Olympic Association and Government help to travel with professional support that a team must have.

Every one of our players was medically examined and certified fit to compete by a doctor at home before travelling.

We travelled with a qualified Physio/Coach. Our teams were insured to cover any health emergency. Our players had to meet required international fitness standards to qualify for selection.

Sadly, the Rugby Union cannot make that claim today, nor can many of our sporting associations.

It was good, therefore, to see President Ali positively respond to Nicolette and Keevin’s public revelations and I congratulate them for speaking out.

In contrast, the response from the President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, and of the Olympic Association, Juman Yas s in, w as negative, defensive, typical, and

unacceptable.

Ninvalle also heads the National Sports Commission and is in a conflict of interest by remaining head of the Boxing Association. Juman Yassin has been President of the Olympic Association for some 26 years, much, much, too long.

No one should head a sporting association or club for more than five years.

Jamaica has produced some of the best athletes in the world and have shown the way.

Other Caribbean countries have done well too.

At the last Commonwealth Games, Guyana could not manage a medal and we were not even represented at Rugby, nor for that matter, any team sport.

There is no excuse for this. President Ali is reported as having asked the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport to engage all of our sporting associations on these matters and has said, “we can’t ask our athletes to give us their best and to perform at an optimal level when we don’t support them to do so”.

He is so right. Let’s look forward to that happening from now on.

Secondly, farmers can adopt a zero grazing programme, where feed or forage is cut and brought to the animals. This is

economical for the smaller animals like ruminants however, for the larger animals that consume more food, a rotational programme is more applicable.

With a rotational grazing programme, certain expensive infrastructural works have to be put in place such as fencing the pasture as well as the planting of nutritious grasses. The

stocking rate and other factors have to be taken into consideration, which leads me back to the original plan of grazing in the open savanna, with paid rangers to attend to the animals.

Despite the oil boom, farming still remains the leading industry in Berbice and the solving of the nagging problems plaguing the industry must be tackled immediately in order that the industry be saved. A careful and comprehensive plan needs to be put in place so that all the farmers can be comfortable to work with.

Never mind the occasional cash grants that Government gives out; the oil companies get cash grants every day.

They boast to their shareholders that, “Life is Good,” and “Guyana is their milking cow that keeps giving and giving and

giving.”

There is no one else in Guyana that cares as much as Mr. Lall about the fleecing of G u y a n a ’ s o i l , gold/diamonds, timber, and other natural resources.

People are understanding Mr. Lall’s message. I encourage everyone to read the papers and tune in to the programmes on KN Radio on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, as Mr. Lall explains all the ways in which Guyana is being robbed.

Both the Government and Opposition are worried that Mr. Lall’s message is resonating among the people. They have unleashed a professor guy who is more of a propaganda chief saying silly things that the contract cannot be renegotiated, when the contract itself says it can be renegotiated with agreement on both sides.

There is another fellow, not an academic or educated

person, nor a critic, making swipes and telling people not to listen to Glenn Lall. And there is another fellow calling himself a financial analyst, barely qualified, who thinks he knows more than real, seasoned academics and professors.

The Government is simply s c a r e d o f M r. L a l l ’s p o p u l a r i t y, a n d h a s unleashed these detractors.

Nevertheless, people understand that Mr. Lall stands for the masses and is the voice of the poor and dispossessed. His message is powerful.

However, we must give credit to the repentant AFC for now coming out strongly for renegotiation.

There is also a growing set of PNC folks who are joining the oil renegotiation b a n d w a g o n . Wa k e u p Guyana! It’s “Our Country and Our Wealth.”

Tourism Awareness Month Launched in Linden …Gov’t commits to decentralizing the sector The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, in collaboration with the Guyana Tourism Authority on Monday launched Tourism Month 2022 under the theme, ‘All sectors, One tourism’ at the Watooka Guest House in Linden.

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips told those gathered at the opening ceremony that the Government of Guyana views tourism as a significant contributor to the country’s economy. He disclosed that Guyana benefits from an average of US$300M annually. For the first half of 2022, Guyana saw an 103 percent increase in tourists visiting the country when compared to the same period the previous year.

“So when it comes to tourism, boosting all our sectors, to create one dynamic destination, sets us apart and bolsters our c o u n t r y ’ s

development…tourism has quickly become a major contender over the years,” he stated.

The Prime Minister said too that over 50,000 jobs were provided in the sector while explaining that tourism protects, preserves and celebrates Guyana’s environmental cultural heritage. The tourism sector, he said, is becoming an avenue for economic diversification and upscaling opportunities.

Prime Minister Phillips said focus is currently being placed on addressing potential loop holes and decentralizing the sector.

Admitting that much work needs to be done, the Prime Minister said that Government is investing heavily in each region while pointing specifically to the $30M investment in the Linden Waterfront project.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Waldron; also

spoke to Government’s decentralizing efforts. She said in Region 10, efforts to decentralize the tourism sector in Region 10, are being enhanced through the Linden to Lethem road construction project and the Linden-Soesdyke Highway rehabilitation project.

Decentralization, the Minister said, is part of the deliberate thrust for inclusion and regional economic development. “We come to these places because we believe we must increasingly take our major national events and observances outside of the capital and bring them to you wherever you are, all over the country for Guyana is much more than Region Four and Georgetown...they increase your national and international profile which is invaluable,” she said.

Here in Guyana, our President number one priority is food followed by ecotourism - a country that is infested with crimes of all kinds.

Has micromanagement returned?

I

t must be a lonely life for the country’s Vi c e P r e s i d e n t .

Yesterday, images were posted on his Facebook page showing him all alone.

On Monday, he met with the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Guo Haiyan. He was all alone on one side of the table while the Chinese Ambassador was on the other side, flanked by two of her representatives. He also met with European Union Head in Guyana in a one-toone meeting. No one was there to record what was said and no representative from the Foreign Ministry, as is usually the established protocol in other countries, was present.

It is surprising that when he did meet, on the same day, with the General Manager of the Caribbean Country Department of the InterAmerican Development Bank, he was in the company of two top officials based in the Ministry of Finance. Yet, when he met with the top EU and Chinese representatives, he had no personnel from the Foreign Ministry present.

Of interest would be to know in what capacity he met with those individuals and teams.

He is not the Minister of Foreign Affairs nor is he the country’s Finance Minister.

He holds no Ministerial responsibility but has been assigned, according to the Official Gazette, oversight

responsibilities for finance, natural resources and the environment.

O v e r s i g h t responsibilities are not on the same level as Ministerial responsibilities which would make him accountable to the National Assembly. The Vice President is constitutionally a Member of Cabinet and his office falls within the Office of the President. It is not unknown for foreign diplomats to meet with government officials.

They may be asked to discuss with those persons the development programmes which their countries are pursuing with the Government of Guyana.

However, there is within the Foreign Ministry a Department of International Cooperation which holds responsibilities for coordinating economic cooperation with other states and in the exercise of such responsibilities, the department coordinates with the various subject ministries. It amounts to sidelining the work of the Foreign Ministry, under which the Department of International Cooperation falls, by not involving Foreign Service personnel in the discussions which the Vice President held on Monday.

This however, has long been the disjointed approach to governance by the PPPC

government. The same situation exists where the President meets with investors and other persons without the subject Ministers always being present. This should not happen because in any government, the relevant subject Ministers must be privy to the contents of the discussions on matters which concern them.

But the PPPC, unfortunately, has had its own style. Power and authority, and one suspects decision-making, appear to be concentrated in a few persons’ hands. Only yesterday, this column had to lament that the Men on Mission was a presidential initiative and not one which is being managed by the Ministry of Human Services a n d S o c i a l S e c u r i t y.

Ironically, yesterday the said ministry launched another initiative aimed at gender equality and targeting hinterland women. This is the sort of disjointed governance system which Guyanese have to put up with and which stifles development.

When authority is concentrated in the hands of one or a few persons and where there is a tendency for micromanagement, as opposed to delegation of responsibilities and authority, decision-making becomes also centralised and this reduces the pace of

No wonder so many people have to seek audiences with the President and Vice President to get things achieved.

It is within this context that Guyana has found itself in a most embarrassing situation. Earlier this year, Guyana’s leaders, seemingly unconcerned that it was an election year in Brazil, met with the now deposed President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, in order to pursue an energy accord. The opinion polls were suggesting a likely Lula victory. But the disjointed manner in which the initiative was pursued would

suggest that advice may not have been sought as to the timing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Brazil. Now the government has to be anxious as to whether the Lula will honour that agreement given that it involves the establishment of an energy arc in which natural gas is expected to play a major role. Lula is likely to have a strong environmental protection policy and this can shatter Guyana’s hopes of creating an energy arc along the lines suggested by the InterAmerican Development Bank. What is even more astonishing is that the PPPC has been in office now for

more than two years and it is still to appoint substantive ambassadors to Venezuela and Brazil. But perhaps, this neglect of the country’s national interest with key neighbouring states can be explained by those photographs which appeared on the Vice President’s Facebook page.

Sex appeal, KFC outlet, wash-bay boys and a banana republic

I

saw the confusion that occurs during the daily rush hour and on the weekends with vehicles lining up at the drive-through entrance at the KFC outlet at Vlissengen Road and Eping Avenue.

I deliberately said to myself that was no concern of mine because I do not take that area when I am going to Kaieteur News in Charlestown. I do not pass that area where the KFC outlet is because the ambience there is one of complete breakdown of civilization.

It was impossible for the local and central authorities to have given permission to build a fast-food outlet there. To use the drive-thru, you actually have to wait in an extraordinary long line which takes in three streetsEping Avenue, Vlissengen Road and Irving Street.

It is a complete mess that even makes a banana republic look more

civilized. Even a banana republic would not have given permission to build a fast-food outlet there. It is impossible to operate a drive-thru service at that junction.

But it happened and other uncivilized directions occupy the landscape of this country.

So last week, Sigmund Freud was on display in Guyana. A lady who signed her name as Melissa Lewis and another person who signed his/here name as D. Sawh expressed disgust at what takes place at that junction.

They both refused to name the offender as KFC. At the Freudian level, the admiration for KFC and the Beharry Group of Companies was so deep that both signatories were driven

by Freudian repression to refer to KFC as a fast-food outlet without being specific.

If you live in Guyana and

you just study one philosophy book, you will feel sorry for the people that make up this nation. Why would two persons complain that they cannot pass the junction of Eping Av e n u e a s i t m e e t s Vlissengen Road and Irving Street because of the jungle of vehicles that KFC creates but refrain deliberately from telling the world what KFC at that junction is doing?

Really, this is a mysterious nation.

But the vehicular jungle tells the story of another side of the lost soul of the Guyanese nation. I have never seen a letter in the newspapers expressing solidarity with the workers who published a missive in the Stabroek News informing the world that the m a n a g e m e n t o f Muneshwer’s general store had instructed them to bring their own toilet paper and hand-washing liquid.

I wonder what Lewis or

Sawh think of that and if they care to pen a newspaper letter on the subject. But there are further dimensions to the lost soul of the Guyanese nationality. The Ministry of Public Works sent out a circular informing the nation it will remove encumbrances on the public parapets.

The targets were washbay boys and dog-food sellers. I use Georgetown on a daily basis and I saw the wash-bay boys and dog food sellers on the parapets. But the hindrance they constitute cannot compare to what KFC does at the junction mentioned above.

The whole world is waiting with immense curiosity to see how the ministry is going to move those vehicles at Eping Avenue.

What type of crane they are going to use? It is easy to imagine the method the ministry will adopt to remove the washing boys

and dog food sellers – just run them off the parapets.

Guyana needs politicians to work for the people

...says regret supporting APNU, PPP masquerading with no plan Dr. Joey Jagan, former supporter of the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Coalition government and son of Guyana’s past President, Cheddi Jagan, does not believe that Guyana is on the path to success, being governed by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

He is equally adamant against the Coalition administration, which he says, failed to deliver results in at least two key sectors of

the country, while in office between 2015 and 2020.

Dr. Jagan was a guest speaker on a Globespan 24x7 discussion last week, when he gave his views on several subject matters, including the future of the PPP, politics and leadership.

To this end, he told viewers of the live broadcast that Guyana is currently not being managed well. He explained, “The state of the governance of Guyana it’s basically a country that’s not governed well, so if the

country is not governed well, and I’m talking by both parties, I’m not talking about one party in particular, I’m talking about the political people in power in Guyana through the ages with the exception probably of my father and (former President) Mr. (Desmond) Hoyte.”

He continued, “I am disappointed in both parties to tell you the truth. They don’t have any vision really for the country from what I am seeing.” The former politician went on to point

out that he believes water and electricity are two major elements that help a country to develop, however under the previous Coalition administration, which he supported, he failed to see any progress in this regard.

He pointed out, “Mr. (David) Granger was there, I supported him, did he do anything to better our water and electricity and the answer, I can tell you is a clear no. And are these people in power doing anything about electricity?

No! And they have no intention of doing anything about it...”

One of the hosts then asked Dr. Jagan if he regrets supporting the APNU when he said, “Hell yeah, I regret supporting APNU. You better believe I regret supporting APNU because APNU in doing nothing for nobody as far as I’m concerned and I regret

supporting them...”

Likewise, when it comes to the incumbent leadership, Dr. Jagan explained, “It’s just a masquerade in a lot of ways.”

To this end, he shared that Guyana desperately needs leaders like his father who would be “honest” and “do their job for the public”.

The son of the late President Jagan was keen to note, “I have nothing against these people who are the leaders in the PPP or the PNC. I think a lot of them have good intentions for the country, however that is not enough.

You must have a vision for the country. Good intention in gonna get us no where...I’m not saying that President Ali doesn’t have good intentions or Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo or Mr. Norton. They have good intentions; I don’t deny that.”

Dr. Joey Jagan must be broken and one way this can be done is by simply ensuring equal distribution of wealth. “We got a racial problem first of all so when you talking about economic development, you got to talk about bringing people to share the pie, every race must share the pie. They must get a cut of the pie. If they don’t do that, you will have conflict forever and Guyana will never go anywhere,” he shared.

Fifth oil project to cost more than US$10B American energy company, Hess Corporation, has put Guyana on notice, that the fifth project targeting 1.3 billion barrels of oil in the Stabroek Block’s Uaru field, will cost way more than US$10B. The company issued this forewarning about the most expensive development to come during its 2022 third quarter earnings call.

Hess Executives told shareholders that they were able to insulate development costs for Payara and Yellowtail to some extent, from inflationary pressures by locking in key contracts early. In fact, Hess said its partner and operator of the block, ExxonMobil affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) has “done an excellent job of offsetting any inflation through a series of efficient strategies.”

With respect to the Uaru Project, Hess officials said the circumstances will be different, adding that the cost for the Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, will surely reflect current market conditions, as well as scope changes. While it would be

affected by inflation, Hess said the project would still carry “world-class breakevens.” It said a more detailed update on Uaru will be provided once government approval is received.

In its project summary that was submitted to the Environmental Protection A g e n c y ( E PA ) , E s s o Exploration and Production Guyana Limited said the Uaru Project will be located in the eastern portion of the block, approximately 200 km from Georgetown and amid previous Stabroek Projects.

Current plans include drilling to produce oil from approximately 40-76 wells which costs millions of dollars. Production is expected to begin between the fourth quarter of 2026 and the second quarter of 2027, with an expected field life of at least 20 years.

EEPGL said the production facilities to be installed include subsea equipment attached to the seafloor as well as processing equipment on the ocean’s surface known as a Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading vessel.

The anticipated production rate for the FPSO ranges between approximately 220,000 barrels and 275,000 barrels of oil per day. The vessel will be capable of storing approximately two million barrels of oil.

Additionally, third party oil tankers will be scheduled to offload the oil from the FPSO, making the oil

available for export to the international market. The FPSO will also process, dehydrate, compress, and reinject associated gas produced from the reservoir.

Missing tourist identified as NYPD cop The Orinduik Falls

Missing NYPD officer, Gladstone Haynes

The overseas-based Guyanese, who went missing at the Orinduik Falls during a birthday outing on Sunday, has been identified as an NYPD officer.

Missing is 43-year-old Gladstone Haynes. According to the New York Post, Officer Haynes worked for the 70th Precinct in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and was a serving member of the NYPD for the past 17-years.

“We are assisting the state department and local authorities with their investigation,” an NYPD spokesman told the media outlet.

Kaieteur News reported that both the Guyana Police Force and members of the Guyana Defence Force have launched a search operation to find Haynes, who disappeared after going for a swim at the Orinduik Falls, Region Eight, sometime around 15:00hrs on Sunday.

Information reaching this publication revealed that Haynes and the mother of his children, a 34-year-old woman from the United States of America (USA), were on a tour from Ogle Airport to Kaieteur Falls and then to Orinduik Falls, along with other tourists that day.

The woman who was celebrating her birthday on Sunday, told police that sometime around 15:00hrs, Haynes was swimming below the Orinduik Falls in the water which was streaming very heavily. It was reported that Haynes went under the water but never resurfaced. An alarm was raised and now a search is ongoing for Haynes who has not been seen since.

APNU/AFC’s 2nd dismissed election petition…

Case management conference set for Dec. 7 A case management hearing into the APNU/AFC coalition’s second election petition appeal, which challenges the 2020 General and Regional Elections, has been fixed for December 7 at 9:30hours.

The case was called on Tuesday before Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Justice Yo n e t t e C u m m i n g s Edwards and Justices of Appeal Dawn Gregory and Rishi Persaud. Roysdale Forde, attorney representing petitioners Claudette Thorne and Heston Bostwick, had written the Registrar of the Court of Appeal requesting that the matter be heard urgently given its national importance and arguing that it is “a failure of the judicial system” to have an appeal pending for 16 months.

Last April, the Coalition filed a Notice of Appeal against Chief Justice (Ag) Roxane George-Wiltshire’s decision to dismiss the second election petition case. Both, Thorne and Bostwick had argued that Section 22 of the Election Laws (Amendment) Act (ELA) and Order #60 of 2020, otherwise known as the Recount Order, are unconstitutional, and resulted in breaches and violations by GECOM in its conduct of the elections.

Through their attorney, it was argued, among other things, that the trial judge erred in law when she ruled that, “Section 22 of the E l e c t i o n s L a w (Amendment) Act 2000 and Order 60 made thereunder were not in violation of the

Constitution of Guyana…”

In their request for the Court of Appeal to set aside the CJ’s ruling, the lawyers submitted that Justice George-Wiltshire, SC erred in law when she ruled that the said Order 60 was intra vires the Constitution of Guyana by virtue of conferment of powers under Article 162 (1) (b) and Section 22 of the ELA. “The Learned Judge erred in law when she ruled that the Appellants did not produce evidence in the said Petition, in that, being a Petition which claimed that the said March 2 Elections was not lawfully conducted, there was no need for production of any evidence except what was presented, namely, the Declarations as per Regional Returning Officers’ 1 to 10 and the Recount,” the appeal document said.

Further, it noted that the judge erred in law when she ordered that the Statements of Poll (SoPs) and Statements of Recount (SoRs) from the March 2020 General and Regional Elections remain in the custody of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of Judicature until all the cases have been completed.

The Chief Justice (CJ) had previously dismissed Petition #99 filed on behalf of Monica Thomas and Brenan Nurse in January 2021, for non-compliance in relation to effecting of service on former President D a v i d G r a n g e r. T h e petitioners had served Granger with the documents too late.

The bandits launching their attack

The woman being wrestled to the ground by the gunmen A woman was on Monday night beaten by gunmen during an armed robbery at an Azeez Burger stand, located along the Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

She was reportedly

working at the stand when the bandits pulled up in what looked like a heavily-tinted silver grey Toyota Allex motorcar during the late evening hours. The brazen robbery was captured on a CCTV camera mounted on a nearby building. According to the footage seen, the car pulled up next to where the stand was and parked. It appeared as if the victim may have thought that the occupants of the car were potential customers.

She positioned herself at the counter of the stand to serve them. The car remained parked for a short while as if the occupants

were deciding what they should order, when suddenly the back door of the vehicle opened and two men emerged from the back seat, as the car drove off a short distance to wait on them.

One of the men was dressed in dark-coloured clothing, while the other appeared to be wearing either white or yellow clothing, and carried a shiny metal object (gun) in his right hand.

Miner chopped to death in Mahdia backdam A miner identified only as “Buss Mouth” was on Tuesday chopped to death during a drunken brawl at Konawaruk Backdam, Region Eight, located some distance away from the mining town of Mahdia. Kaieteur News understands that “Buss Mouth” was drinking

at the backdam’s landing when he got into an argument with a group of men. A fight broke out between him and the men and according to reports reaching this media house, he collapsed after one of the men chopped him to his neck.

He apparently bled to

death still clenching a large knife he had armed himself with during the fight.

Up to press time last evening, detectives were still in the trail travelling out of the backdam with the man’s body.

Gunmen invade Superbet outlet in Canje Berbice Customers and the owners of a sports bar located at Farm, West Canje Berbice were left traumatised after armed men invaded the business place Monday night.

The victims were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, gold jewellery and other valuables.

Owner of the Suraj Sports Bar, Yogeeta Hemchand relayed to Kaieteur News that it was a normal night with over a dozen customers.

Hemchand, along with her husband has been operating an off-license liquor shop at the frontline spot for a number of years.

They added Superbet to their services about six months ago. The Superbet is operated by her nephew.

On the night in question, Yogeeta said she was at the Superbet when she saw a car, burgundy in colour pulled up

and parked across the road, blasting loud music.

The occupants of the vehicle were not visible. She said she moved away from the Superbet and went to her shop to attend to customers.

She then noticed the men running towards the shop. She said she quickly reacted to save herself and family who were already in the house.

“I leave the beers on the counter and I go out lil bit and press the electrical door, so

while I pressing it, I peeping and I see they run to the Superbet and tell everybody to lie down on the ground and that dem want all dem money.”

According to the businesswoman, she saw two of the men with handguns and she saw one of the perpetrators ripped a “fat gold chain” off the neck of one of the customers while the

other men were raiding the pockets of other customers.

She said, “by the time the chain cut, the door already come down and I was safe inside and I start make call and I call for the neighbour and by the time I make calls, the car with the music gone.” The business owner said she also tried contacting the police outpost located a stone’s throw away but they did not respond.

She subsequently made contact with the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and they sent a patrol some 30 minutes later.

“Police took 30 minutes to arrive...we have a toll gate

outpost here, dem na respond. They dont have a vehicle, the phone not working...so we call Central,” she said. Police are investigating the matter.

GLSC, FAO commence LIDAR aerial survey, mapping of Guyana The Guyana Lands & Survey Commission (GLSC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have commenced aerial survey and mapping across the country using LIDAR Technologies.

In the coming weeks, international expertise provided by Medici Land Governance (MLG) and its partners will conduct aerial surveying activities across Guyana using the latest Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) aerial mapping imagery and technologies, the FAO said in a press release.

The aerial survey will use an aircraft carrying LIDAR sensors and mapping cameras to collect highly accurate and detailed LIDAR and orthophoto maps of the land surface within targeted regions. The data collected will be processed to produce digital terrain models and map imagery for extracting infrastructure, water features, and 3D building models. The resulting data will then be entered into key layers to update the national base maps, which are over 50 years old.

At the end of this exercise, over 500 km2 of the urbanized land area (nearly all of

Guyana’s urban footprint) and over 15,000 km2 of the rural area will be surveyed using this new technology.

According to the FAO, Mr. Enrique Monize, Commissioner of GLSC, said, “we are excited to see the latest mapping technologies being employed to advance land surveying. Even though LIDAR has been used before in Guyana, this is the first large scale activity that also combines the traditional imagery with LIDAR for mapping purposes in the country.”

(BBC NEWS) Brazil’s farright president, Jair Bolsonaro, has broken the silence he had maintained since being defeated in Sunday’s presidential election.

He thanked voters who had cast their ballots for him but did not acknowledge defeat. But he did not contest the result either, as some had feared he would. His chief of staff, Ciro Nogueira, spoke after Mr Bolsonaro’s brief statement saying that the “process of transition” of power would begin. Even though Mr Bolsonaro did not himself acknowledge defeat in his own words, Brazil’s Supreme Court released a statement shortly after his speech saying that by authorising the transition of power, he had recognised the result of the election.

Combative statements from the president in the past - such as that “only God” could remove him from office - meant that there had been a tense wait for him to appear in public. Before the election, he had also repeatedly cast unfounded doubts on the voting system.When he finally appeared in public, 44 hours after the election result was announced, Mr Bolsonaro’s statement lasted only two minutes and he did not take any questions from the assembled reporters.

In the message aimed at his supporters, Mr Bolsonaro said that “our dreams continue as alive as ever”. He repeated the values he says he and his party stand for - “God, fatherland, family and freedom” - and insisted that he would continue to strive for “order and progress”, the words emblazoned on Brazil’s flag. He did not mention Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his arch rival who narrowly beat him on Sunday,

Convicted rapist slapped with another rape charge A miner who was one week ago, found guilty of raping an underage girl back in 2019 is now facing another rape charge. The convicted rapist, Rafael Doobay, 28, of Airy Hall Essequibo Coast, Region Two, was charged on Friday for raping his second under age victim.

He appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate Court before Magistrate Esther Sam and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

The court heard that Doobay had allegedly raped another female minor on April 6, 2022. Bail was not granted, and Doobay will have to return to court on

Delon King, a 41-yearold Norton Street, Worthmanville, Georgetown man, was on Monday arrested for being in possession of 88.6 grams of s u s p e c t e d methamphetamine,

commonly known as crystal meth. King was intercepted by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) at the Sophia Bus Park, Stabroek Market where ranks were part of an operation.

Nationwide clean-up exercise set for November 12

Another nationwide clean-up exercise has been set for the 12th of November to allow willing Guyanese to participate in the beautification of the c o u n t r y ’s r o a d s i d e s , neighbourhoods, dams and trenches.

The exercise will be led by the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall. The clean-up is currently being organised by the National Enhancement Committee of which Dharamlall is a member of, and is scheduled to begin at 06:00hrs.The group aims to simultaneously clean up the 10 Administrative regions

of Guyana. With assistance from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOS), the Private sector, the joint services and national and non-national volunteers; the ministry, which bears responsibility for the 10 regions, intends to coordinate the exercise through the Regional Democratic Councils (RDC), municipalities, and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and Community Development Councils.

As it is, the ministry has under its scope 10 regions, 10 municipalities, 70 NDCs and over 100 CDCs. Also to be integrated into the

initiative, the Community Enhancement Workers (CEWs) will also be involved in the initiative.

A team will be deployed on Thursday to survey and identify areas that will require more priority ahead of time in order to allocate the needed resources for the exercise.

The reconnaissance activity will be conducted by all Regional Executive Officers, chairpersons, town clerks, and overseers to confirm areas to prioritise and allocate resources for the clean-up to be done on the 12th of November. All Guyanese are encouraged to participate in the exercise.

We have said regularly that Region 10 needs to de-

velop its agricultural base.

Could you show me anything in there that suggests in the government’s programmes that they are developing agriculture in Region 10?”

Similarly, the Opposition Leader told reporters that

there is need for agricultural development in Region Seven, but the plans in this regard are missing.

In Georgetown, Norton argued that farmers in North Ruimveldt who were planting, had their crops bulldozed by government to allow for houses to be developed.

In the same breath, Norton argued that there were other available lands

that could have been used for housing.

Moreover, he explained, “If you are serious about agriculture, when you do housing schemes, you will do it in a way that first of all you provide lands that you can do small scale agricul-

ture in the area, and it don’t have to be livestock, it can be crops.”

Citing an example that speaks to the need for agricultural lands to be available in housing schemes, Norton said at Mocha on the East Bank of Demerara, residents were forced to get rid of their herds of

cattle due to unavailable lands.

To this end, the Opposition Leader concluded, “He’s showing no interest in agriculture.

He says what he thinks should be said for the World to hear, but where is the plan for agricultural development?

Could they show us thei r plan for agro-processing? How many products they are focussing on?

There is no plan for agriculture in this country.”

He also questioned the success of government’s Farmer’s Market initiative that was geared at allowing pro-

ducers to sell their crops directly to consumers, to re-

duce the cost of food prices. “The Finance Minister said they were putting these tarmacs so that the farmers could bring their

produce direct to the people.

Following two nights of elimination matches, four teams remain poised to battle for the coveted title, and bragging rights for a year. Playing in front of a sizable crowd of parents and cricket fans at the Area H Ground, the visiting team successfully defended their total of 65 to lift their first ever youth title.

Chairman of the BCB Competition Committee, Leslie Solomon, congratulated Rose Hall Canje on their historic achievement and urged them to remain focused. Speaking directly to the youths, he urged them to always strive for excellence and reassured them that the board, under the

leadership of Hilbert Foster, would continue to invest into their career and future.

He also disclosed that the BCB have successfully completed tournaments at the under-13, under-15 and under-17 levels and is currently working on the under-19 tournament, all in 2022.

BCB Secretary, Angela Haniff, expressed thanks to West Indies all rounder Romario Shepherd and his wife for their sponsorship of the tournament.

She noted that it is very pleasing to the BCB when players invest in the game that made them household names and assist the board to continue the rich legacy of Berbice cricket.

Both teams received a trophy and cash prize while Richard Ramdeholl carried home the Player of the Finals award.

East Coast Legends posted 112-7, batting first. Hardat Heeranadan led with 34, while Mahase Chunilall scored 30.

Mustapha Azeemullah took 2-20 and Rishi Baljit picked up 2-21. Success Wellfab replied with 113-3 in 17 overs. Ravi Singh made 35 not out, Suraj Singh 31, Mustapha Azeemullah 21 not out.

In the semi finals, East Coast beat GT Titans by seven wickets. GT Titans made 136 all out in 20 overs, batting first. Asif Ally scored 22 and Randy Johnson 19; Hardat Heeranandan claimed 3-12. East Coast

Orphan who topped Guyana under-15 batting rewarded with cricket gear... ...to receive assistance over the next three years The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Bissoondyal Singh presented cricket gear to National under-15 opening batsman Navin Boodwah on

Thursday, October 27, 2022 at the GCB office in a simple handing-over ceremony.

The 14 year old Boodwah, who hails from Port Mourant, was Guyanas

leading run-scorer during the rain- affected CWI Rising Stars Under-15 50 Overs Tournament played in Grenada in August.

Boodwah had a top score of

48 in Guyanas 26-run win against Windwards but it was his innings of 26 off 24 balls in a 15 over per side match against Trinidad and Tobago which showed his ability to adapt to an even shorter version. Head Coach Latchman Yadram said that innings gave the team a quick start which enabled Guyana to post a winning total of 96-5 in their allotted 15 overs.

Boodwah who lives at the Balnivas Shelter in Achorville Port Mourant and attends the Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary School started playing cricket in January of this year for Port Mourant Cricket Club (PMCC). When asked what motivated him to start playing cricket, he said it was Pandit Jagmohan who told him that he has talent and that he should consider playing hard ball cricket. It was those words that inspired him. He further stated that Pandit Jagmohan eventually encouraged him

During the presentation, the GCB President also made a pledge to Boodwah that he will be provided with financial and other assistance over the next three (3) years.

Administrator of the Shelter, Ms. Nodan Ramphal, told the GCB that Boodwah is one of five (5) children from the shelter who play cricket and that they are encouraged to take their education seriously and not just focus on sports. She expressed gratitude for the contribution made by the

GCB and thanked President Singh for the kind gesture.

The soft spoken Boodwah thanked the GCB President for the muchneeded gear and was very happy for the contribution.

GCB President Bissoondyal Singh congratulated Boodwah for having a successful tournament in which Guyana narrowly missed out on winning the championship when they placed second to Champions Leewards Island.

Singh is confident that Boodwahs achievement will serve as an inspiration to all children of all levels in Guyana.

During this period many talented players were unable to make the cut at the highest level but the love, passion and commitment for the game remained. Today, these fringe players are now classified as Masters/Veterans/Legends and have never had the opportunity to showcase their tremendous talent and ability to the world at large. Cricket West Indies Masters Association (CWIMA) intends to rediscover these legends of this period from wherever they are now in the world and bring them back together, once again, and rekindle that spirit that made us world champions twice in 1975 and 1979. West Indies cricket can be catapulted back to the top when our current WI players view the professionalism, pride,

and cricket culture that these legends possess.

Our major vision is to make our players believe again in themselves and channel that passion and pride to produce World champions at the O40s, O50s, O60s World Cup events that will be held every two years on the world stage.

BMC-GY notes that the GCB has recently expressed its desire to have several academies across the length and breadth of Guyana and in this regard stand ready to support the development of cricket in Guyana with any positive initiative that can make an impact in Guyana and further afield. Many social ills such as alcohol abuse and drug addiction continue to affect our youths and even mature persons in society and we all have a duty and responsibility to assist in eradicating these ills from our society.

The GCB has never administered masters cricket in Guyana ever since its 80 years history and should be happy that BMC is filling that gaping void in our cricketing community. In the men’s second division semifinals, YMCA Old Fort Beta edged GCC Pitbulls 4-3 to earn their place in the finals while SHC Snipers dominated in their game against the previously outstanding YMCA Old Fort Top Form, with a 7-2 finish to secure the other spot in the final. SHC Snipers

continued to play clinically in their final match and hammered YMCA Old Fort Beta to a 7-1 finish.

The lone goal for Old Fort Beta was scored by Jael Gaskin while Tahrea Garnett and Shakeem Fausette scored the majority of the goals for the Snipers. Shakeem Fausette walked away with the MVP award in this category while his teammate Raoul Whittaker earned the best goalkeeper award.

Meanwhile, in the Vets Division Aderemi Simon of YMCA Old Fort showcased his dominance in his division

scoring both goals for his team, against Bounty GCC to earn the Vets Title.

The MVP award went to Devin Hooper while the well deserved best Goalkeeper award went to Old Forts Anthony Cole.

In the ladies’ semifinal matches GCC Spice and GCC Tigers both eliminated their opponents to clash head-to-head in the finals.

The two GCC sister teams put on a good show for the fans. However, they were tied 2-2 at the buzzer.

Sarah Klautky and Gabriella Xavier of GCC Tigers, who scored in the

initial phase of the game, scored once again in the penalty shoot-out as their team walked away with the trophy.

Sonia Jardine netted the only goal for GCC Spice while the talented Abosaide Cadogan put forth a MVP performance while her

MVP Sports Futsal Tournament rescheduled to Saturday

h e P e t r a organised MVP Sports Futsal Tournament, which was scheduled to continue tonight, has been rescheduled to Saturday, November 6, to accommodate the Guyana Football Associations (GFA) semi-final fixture, that involves a majority of the futsal competitors. When the tournament resumes, another ten matches are scheduled to unfold at the National Gymnasium from 18:30 hrs.

The Womens Division starts the night with Fruta Conquerors going up against

Herstelling followed by Santos versus GT Panthers from 19:10 hrs. At 19:50 hrs, GDF will meet Tiger Bay, while Police face Avocado Ballers from 20:20 hrs.

On Saturday, the ladies commenced their competition which saw Fruta Conquerors defeat Tiger Bay (2 1), GDF got past Herstelling (5 1), Police triumph over GT Panther (2 1) and Avocado Ballers squeezed past Santos (2 1).

After the first round of matches, GDF and Fruta Conquerors lead Group A with three points each, ahead of Herstelling and Tiger Bay,

who they defeated, respectively.

In Group B, Police lead with a superior goal difference while Avocado Ballers are second; both teams have three points each.

GT Panthers and Santos were on the receiving end of the defeats from those two teams and are yet to secure a point in the Group.

For the Men, Tiger Bay and Mocha Family get the ball rolling then Sophia lock horns with Campbellville from 21:15 hrs. Bent Street and BV collide from 22:00 hrs while Back Circle take on Vengy FC at 22:45 hrs.

Grove Hi Tech trounce Timehri Panthers to lift title; Soesdyke Falcons beat Agricola Red Triangle for third Playing without their charismatic Captain and leading goal scorer, Domini Garnett who is recovering from an injury he sustained one week before in the semifinals, Grove Hi Tech were not daunted as they defeated Timehri Panthers 3-1 to lift the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) Senior League championship.

It all went down at the GFF National Training Centre on Sunday afternoon last where Soesdyke Falcons, which had lost to Grove Hi Tech in their final-four clash, outlasted Agricola Red Triangle to win the third-place match, 4-2 on kicks from the penalty mark after a 0-0 scoreline at the end of regulation time. In solidarity with their injured colleague who was named the Leagues Most Valuable Player for his 9 goals in four matches, the Grove Hi Tech players wore t-shirts for their warm-up with the slogan, Get well soon Damo”.

This certainly made them a solidified unit as they undertook the task of unseating Timehri Panthers as the senior champs of the East Bank. It was by no means a walk in the park as the Timehri unit were also a confident bunch that also harboured thoughts of lifting the first-place trophy. It was Grove that would take the early lead much to the delight of their fans and supporters.

Jonathan Bailey rocked the back of the nets with a well-taken shot in the 6th minute to give his side the early momentum. Even with being ahead, Timehri kept the pressure on and were duly rewarded in the 15th minute when the hungry Tyrone Burnette slipped one past the Grove custodian to add balance to the score line, 1-1. The halftime break was taken with the score locked and all

to play for in the second half. But as it turned out, the hungrier of the two teams was Grove Hi Tech which fired in two unanswered goals compliments of Darren McPherson and Randy Smartt to seal the win and walk away with the first-place prize of $200,000 and trophy. Timehri Panthers for their efforts took the second-place prize of $100,000 and a trophy. The third-place clash between Soesdyke Falcons and Agricola did not produce any goals in regulation time.

Kicks from the penalty mark were used to decide the winner, which Soesdyke won comfortably, 4-2 to seal the third-place prize of $50,000 and a trophy.

Soesdyke s Terrence Glasgow won the prize for scoring the most goals of the League while his teammate, Dante GrantStuart was named the Leagues Best Goalkeeper. GFF President, Wayne Forde along with General Secretary Ian Alves and other officials were on hand to witness the action. Meanwhile, the EBFA President commented on the successful conclusion of the League. ”I would like to congratulate Grove High Tech for winning the East Bank Senior Mens League. I would also like to congratulate every club that participated in the league and to welcome newcomer, St. Cuthberts Mission. I would like to send out a special thank you to my Executive Committee, the match officials and especially the fans for their support. On behalf of the EBFA, I would also like to say a special thank you to President Wayne Forde and the GFF for providing the funding, technical support and resources, which allowed over 300 young men to display their talent and develop further.”

The presentation of prizes is expected to be done on Thursday at the GFF NTC.

Anna Regina Mayor Welcomes Essequibo Golf Club Launch Former and current students from the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School launched the first golf club outside of Georgetown on Monday in Anna Regina and were accepted by the Guyana Golf Association as the umbrella organization for the Essequibo Coast.

Anna Regina Mayor Rajendra Prabhulall said, “I am extremely proud of our region and especially our students from Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary who excelled at this new sport in the PE curriculum.

From a tourism perspective, I see great opportunities after discussing with Mr.Hussain and we will bring this to our statutory meetings for further review since the potential is extremely

lucrative for our entire region. Our full support will be given to the Essequibo Golf Club and by extension, the Guyana Golf Association for the development of Golf in Region 2.”

President of the Guyana Golf Association Aleem Hussain welcomed the Club and committed the resources of the GGA and Nexgen Golf Academy to ensuring successful growth, “I am here personally at this auspicious occasion because it is the foundation upon which golf will develop in this and other regions. You are again proving to be leaders in the sport.”

The Club plans to host several golf activities in November to raise awareness of the sport and to develop coaches,

competitions and expand their member base. The founding members pledged to grow the game on the Coast and took time to engage with the Mayor and Town Clerk.

According to the group, “We are excited to have been among the pioneers of golf at CSEC level and want to be the first to represent the country at junior golf and the Olympics in the near future.

We believe that with our determination and the response so far, golf will become a dominant sport in Region 2.” Anna Regina Town Clerk Diane Critchlow expressed her delight at the development of the sport and pledged her full support, “We in Region 2 have always welcomed new ideas and this is proof that once again, we are leading the way.

By Sean Devers in Trinidad The Guyana Harpy Eagles face-off with defending Champions Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in the second round of matches in Zone A of CG United Regional Super50 at the Brain Lara Academy from 2pm today under lights.

The Red force comes into todays match on the back of a 7-wicket win overs CCC at Tarouba.

Akeal Hosein had 4-38, while Jayden Searles and Sunil Narine took two wickets for the Red Force who reached 120-3 with Kjorn Ottley making an unbeaten 65 in reply to CCCs 119 all out.

Harpy Eagles were beaten by 28 runs by Windwards Volcanos who made 296-4 before bowling out Guyana for 268 despite a fluent top score of 48 from Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

The last time these teams met was in the last years Final in Antigua when Red force won by 152 runs after Lendl Simmons (146a) and Evin Lewis (57) added 121 for the first wicket to see the Red Force to 362-5.
