Action is needed to move Guyana forward DEAR EDITOR, As the controversy surrounding the no confidence motion and the proroguing of Parliament by the president unfolds, it has become apparent that there has been dishonesty and a serious lack of credibility by the PPP regime. Guyanese from coast to coast are angry with the PPP rule by decree because they have never experienced this type of dictatorship before by the same PPP regime that claimed to be democratic. For the record, the PPP was never a truly democratic party, it started out as a
Communist party with dictatorial tendencies but after being in the opposition for 28 years, it buckled under the pressure of the United States to change its communist ideology prior to winning the election in 1992. After eight years in office, the PPP reverted back to raw dictatorship under Jagdeo and now Mr. Ramotar who prorogued Parliament and chose to rule by decree. The PPP regime cannot be trusted and its rule by decree cannot be allowed to continue. Its track records in accountability, transparency, good governance and
honesty are unimpressive, resulting in massive corruption, cronyism and nepotism which is in their DNA. This is a very corrupt, brutal, dangerous and dictatorial regime that has lost the trust and confidence of the people. Their standard of governance is the lowest ever seen in the entire Caribbean and perhaps the entire world. Proof of this lies in the fact that the President and his PPP cabal have embraced the disgraceful Attorney General despite his vulgar and obscene behavior and his statements of impending
On the Prorogation of the National Assembly/Parliament DEAR EDITOR, President Donald Ramotar acted constitutionally and appropriately in the current political environment. He has played the right card in the circumstances. The huff and puff and anger and bitterness of some members of the opposition parties for their own narrow partisan political mileage/gain against the national interest will be their face saving endeavor. The voting population will not be fooled, for It is well known that bitterness and spite from some
politicians are the motivating factors for their postures. This period of prorogation will present yet another opportunity for the members of the National Assembly and the political leaders to act maturely in the national interest and forge consensus on national issues. Let’s see; the people will eventually have to speak. Some Members in the National Assembly have been and continue to be poor role models for the children and people of this dear land of Guyana, and have created a

It will as well cause many persons, including myself, to ask if they are genuinely interested in rehabilitating the woeful state of communities countrywide and meaningfully addressing the chronic problems of flooding, or to perpetuate PPP rule?

dysfunctional Assembly with their political theatrics over the last three years. They have set a distasteful national tone. We see the Catholic Bishop has awakened from a long silence and is adding his not so subtle negative fuel on quite a correct constitutional action of the President, but has been silent on the obstructions by the Opposition on transformational projects for national development for energy, investments, job creation etc. and ignoring/ being silent on other matters - the unrepresentative/ individually selected persons of the not-so transparent and biased Transparency Institute of Guyana, the oneman Guyana Human Rights Association on selected issues, and some poison pen media houses which fueling conflicts. violence against Kaieteur News Publisher, Glenn Lall and his staff. The role of the Chief Law Officer of any country is to protect the citizens of his/her country and not to issue violent threats against them or attempt to solicit sex from a young female reporter for his uncle. It has been almost a month since the Kaieteur News tape surfaced in which the AG was heard issuing death threats against the staff of Kaieteur News and there is not a hint of any charges against him. As usual, we expect the DPP to say that there is not enough evidence to charge the untouchable and superior AG who is a CHATREE. But we are putting the DPP on notice that we are watching, the people are waiting; our CARICOM neighbors are looking and the world is observing her actions. Guyanese are in a quandary and the only way out of this quagmire is a revolution. Not a violent or bloody revolution, but more of a political-cultural revolution to change the collective mindset of the people to force the PPP cabal out of office. Whatever the regime has been doing for the past 22 years is clearly not working for the masses because many are poorer today than they were five or ten years ago. Guyana is one of the most indebted and corrupt countries in the world, with one of the highest crime and murder rates, the highest suicidal rate, the highest youth unemployment rate, the second poorest country after Haiti in the Western Hemisphere, and the first among its CARICOM neighbours to prorogue Continued on page 23
Rape culture offers few consequences for the rich DEAR EDITOR, “Rape culture covers everything, from victimblaming to the prevailing notion of rapists as menacing strangers who attack from bushes — not friends, confidants, mentors or spouses. Rape culture teaches women to rearrange their lives to avoid being raped (by not walking alone at night, by not wearing certain clothing, by carrying pepper spray and so on) rather than simply teaching men not to rape. In rape culture, there are few consequences for rapists — even fewer if they are rich, famous or powerful.
Feminists believe rape culture discourages women who are raped from reporting it because there are so many disincentives for doing so, such as having their credibility trashed, especially if the perpetrator is well-liked.” (Washington Post; Tuesday, 25, 2014) This is a quote taken from a report on the rape allegations being made against American comedian Bill Cosby. I would say that we have a rape culture in Guyana. And it is not just errant or misguided policemen who subscribe to it. Ryhaan Shah
Leguan residents complain about extortion DEAR EDITOR, We the residents of Leguan will be grateful if you could assist us by granting us a small space in your newspaper to inform the relevant authorities about the hostage situation from which we are seeking release from. We are seeking release from the clutches of the Police ranks, who are demanding monies from us at all level on the island. We are poor farmers who have to work very hard for our living and these policemen and women are demanding from us, exorbitant sums for minor offences where these ranks can only warm the people of, they are demanding money.
If there are social activities on the island, for example weddings, BBQ etc despite the fact that the relevant permission is given for such activities, the police will shut down the activities long before the due time if they are not given what they want example beers and money. There is a female rank who is creating havoc on the island; she always want a $20,000 or $40,000. Complaints have been made to the commander of the Division and to date nothing has been done. We are calling on the government to protect the residents from this barbaric attitude of the police. We just cannot take it anymore. Residents

Protect K/News and staff, investigate AG Nandlall
- Int’l Human Rights body tells Govt. The Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has ordered the Guyana government to provide within 15 days information to the Commission on the steps the government intends to take to protect Kaieteur News and its staff. Guyana is a member of the IACHR. The order stemmed from a report to the commission by Christopher Ram following the release of a telephone recording between Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Kaieteur News senior reporter, Leonard Gildarie. “After analyzing the factual and legal arguments put forth by (Christopher Ram) the commission considers that the information presented demonstrates prima facie that the members of Kaieteur News journal are in a serious and urgent situation since their lives and personal integrity face an imminent risk of irreparable harm.”

It ordered that the government provide updated information periodically. “Given that the present precautionary measures have been granted without having previously requested information from the State, the Commission will review this decision once it receives reports from both parties.” The Commission informed Guyana that it must adopt the necessary measures to protect the lives and personal integrity of (Glenn Lall, Adam Harris and Leonard Gildarie); agree on the measures to be adopted with the beneficiaries and their representatives; and
report on the actions taken to investigate the alleged facts that gave rise to the adoption of this precautionary measure in order to prevent their repetition. The facts are contained in a recorded telephone conversation between Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Kaieteur News senior reporter, Leonard Gildarie. This conversation was released to the public by Kaieteur News. The commission noted, “During the conversation, the Attorney General purportedly threatened Kaieteur News’ staff and revealed knowledge of a possible attack against them.” “Although Mr. Glenn Lall made a formal complaint to the police concerning the
purported threats uttered by the Attorney General against the newspaper, ‘[...] no form of action has been taken against (Nandlall.) The Inter-American Commission and the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights have repeatedly established that precautionary and provisional measures have a dual nature, precautionary and protective. Regarding their protective nature, the measures seek to avoid irreparable harm and preserve the exercise of human rights. Regarding their precautionary nature, the measures have the purpose of preserving a legal situation being considered by the IACHR. Their precautionary nature aims to preserve those rights at risk until the petition

in the Inter-American system is resolved. In the present situation, the Commission considers that the requirement of seriousness is met, in light of the alleged threat expressed against the lives and personal integrity of the Kaieteur News personnel, within the framework of their right to freedom of expression. The commission noted, “In particular, the information presented suggests that the purported threat was oriented toward preventing the members of Kaieteur News from freely exercising their role as journalists, related to a series of reports on corruption cases, among other issues, whi c h allegedly affected high ranking officials within the Government. “In addition to the purported threats, it is worth mentioning that the IACHR Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression closely followed up the situation of freedom of
expression and of reporters in Guyana, and condemned the reported murder of workers from Kaieteur News in 2006. “Moreover, concerning the purported context of violence against reporters in Guyana, the allegations presented appear to be consistent with recent information received by the IACHR in that regard.” The Commission said that it considers prima facie that the rights to life and personal integrity of the three identified members of the Kaieteur News journal face a situation of risk. The publication of the taped conversation between the Attorney General and Mr. Leonard Gildarie and the alleged lack of an investigation would increase the apparent situation of risk faced by the proposed beneficiaries, the commission said. “It appears that the Kaieteur News staffs are presently in a situation of risk without any form of protection.” “The Commission also requests that the Government of Guyana provide information, within the period of 15 days from the date that the present resolution is issued on the adoption of the required precautionary measures.”

Missouri governor orders more troops to Ferguson after riots Reuters) - Aiming to head off new looting and rioting, Missouri’s governor on Tuesday ordered National Guard reinforcements into the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson following overnight violence ignited by the clearing of a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager. Attorneys for the family of Michael Brown, the 18-yearold shot to death by officer Darren Wilson in August, condemned as biased the grand jury process that led to Monday’s decision not to bring criminal charges against Wilson. About a dozen Ferguson buildings burned overnight and 61 people were arrested on charges including burglary, illegal weapons possession and unlawful assembly, police said. Police said protesters fired guns at them, lit patrol cars on fire and hurled bricks into their lines. Police fired tear gas and flashbang canisters at protesters and shops were looted. The killing in Ferguson, a predominantly black city with
a white-dominated power structure, underscores the sometimes tense nature of U.S. race relations. The St. Louis County grand jury’s decision also led to protests in other major U.S. cities. The unrest came despite calls by President Barack Obama and others for police and protesters to exercise restraint. The grand jury decision shifts the legal spotlight to the ongoing U.S. Justice Department investigation into whether Wilson violated Brown’s civil rights by intentionally using excessive force and whether Ferguson police systematically violate people’s rights by using excessive force or discrimination. Brown family lawyer Benjamin Crump said the grand jury process was unfair because the prosecutor in the case had a conflict of interest and Wilson was not properly cross-examined. “This process is broken. The process should be indicted,” Crump told a news conference, adding that the
family wants police to be equipped with body video cameras to provide an indisputable account of their actions. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said he was meeting with law enforcement officials and bolstering the National Guard deployment to ensure that people and property are protected in the days ahead. “The violence we saw in areas of Ferguson last night is unacceptable,” Nixon said in a statement. His office said “the Guard is providing security at the Ferguson Police Department, which will allow additional law enforcement officers to protect the public.” While news channels aired Obama’s live remarks calling for restraint from the White House on one side of the screen, they showed violent scenes from Ferguson on the other. “This is going to happen again,” said Ferguson area resident James Hall, 56, as he walked past a building smouldering from a blaze set during the street protests in the city.
Syrian government air strikes kill 63 in Raqqa - monitoring group
People walk past the wreckage of a car outside Raqqa Museum, after what activists said were airstrikes by forces loyal to Syria (Reuters) - At least 63 people, half of them civilians, were killed when Syrian war planes struck the northeastern city of Raqqa on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war in Syria. Syrian government officials were not immediately available for comment. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Britain-based Observatory, said 10 war planes struck at least 10 times in Raqqa, a stronghold of the ultra-hardline group Islamic State. “The majority of the strikes were in the eastern part of the city,” Abdulrahman said, quoting residents and activists in the
city. “At least 36 of those killed are civilians. As for the rest, we are not sure yet if they were fighters.” Islamic State, which has seized wide expanses of territory in Iraq and Syria, drove the last Syrian government forces out of Raqqa province in late August. Its fighters seized an air base then, capturing and later executing scores of Syrian soldiers. Raqqa has been the target of several air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition aimed at weakening and destroying the ultrahardline group in Iraq and Syria. A U.S. official said the coalition did not carry out any air strikes on Raqqa in the last 24 hours.

Manning may contest Trinidad & Tobago 2015 general election P O R T- O F - S PA I N , Trinidad - CMC – Former prime minister Patrick Manning Monday night said he is considering offering himself as a candidate for the main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) in the 2015 general election. Manning, 68, who led the party out of office following the 2010 general election, said he is prepared to contest the San Fernando east constituency, which he has represented in Parliament for the past 43 years. The longest serving legislator, who served on two occasions as prime minister, suffered a stroke in January
Patrick Manning 2011, leaving him partially paralysed and staying away from Parliament for two years.
But since his return, Manning, the former leader of the PNM, has never spoken in any debate, does not attend party caucus or party meetings or conventions. The PNM recently announced that it was seeking nominations for the San Fernando east seat and has given party supporters a December 1 deadline to nominate candidates. Manning had previously stated that he would be bowing out of politics after this parliamentary term was over. He reiterated his position as recently as last October during the Local Government election last year.
Regional airline denies staff cuts ST JOHN’S, Antigua – CMC - Cash-strapped regional airline, LIAT, Monday described as “speculation” media reports that it was planning to trim its work force by sending home close to 200 employees. On Monday, OBSERVER media reported that the airline, which is owned by the governments of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines, could send home the workers as it moves to improve its financial stability. But LIAT Communications Manager Desmond Brown said while the company has taken note of the media reports “any staff cuts that may be required in order to reflect the size of LIAT’s business in the future will only be made in consultation with staff and
Desmond Brown their representatives. “This process has yet to commence, and therefore, any speculation about the number of cuts remains just that –
speculation,” Brown said in a brief statement. OBSERVER media reported that the job cuts would affect every island where the airline operates and that LIAT has presented several options to reduce the employee numbers. Browne ma d e no reference to OBSERVER media’s reports that two pilots had been dismissed last week following an investigation into an incident during the passage of Tropical Storm Gonzalo, on October 13, that led to one of the airline’s new aircraft being damaged. Chairman of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association’s (LIALPA) Patterson Thompson said his union is unhappy about the situation and that it would be taking further steps.
Colombia FARC free two soldiers, vow to release general by weekend BOGOTA (Reuters) Colombia’s FARC rebels freed two captured soldiers yesterday, the first step toward resuming stalled peace talks which the government suspended after the insurgent group took five hostages, including an army general. The halt in the two-
year-old negotiations in Havana threatened to derail efforts to end five decades of war between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which has killed more than 200,000 people since 1964. President Juan Manuel Santos, who has staked his
legacy on a successful peace deal, has said talks would not restart until all the hostages are free, including General Ruben Dario Alzate, the highest-ranking military official ever taken by the FARC. The soldiers, Paulo Cesar Rivera and Jonathan Andres Diaz, who were taken captive in the restive eastern department of Arauca during a military operation on Nov. 9, were freed with the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross. “We’re glad that these two people can shortly return to their homes, where their families await them,” Christoph Harnisch, head of the ICRC’s Colombia delegation, said in a statement.

If you can drive in Guyana, you can drive anywhere It is said that if you can drive in Guyana, then you can drive anywhere in the world. The drivers of Guyana are amongst the most highly skilled in the world, and this may have to do with the fact that most of them learnt to drive in other persons’ vehicles. When you are driving another person’s vehicle you tend to take more chances than usual because it is not yours and therefore if you hit something, somebody else will have to foot the bill. And when one driver tells another something, you can bet there will be a response. In fact, two drivers can hold
up traffic for minutes while they swear at each other. One day a driver was going down a road and approached a car that was coming in the other direction. Although there was room for the first car to pass, he forced the oncoming driver to slow down. Winding down his window, he shouted at the other driver. “Pig!” The other driver immediately got upset, continued on, and while looking in the rear view mirror, swore at the first driver. Then his car hit a pig which was in the middle of the road. In Guyana there is a law against using cellular phones
while driving, but every day you can see hundreds of drivers, sometimes even police officers, chatting away on their phones while driving. People do all kinds of things behind the wheel. One day a traffic cop pulled alongside a speeding car. Glancing into the car, he was astounded to see the young lady who was driving busy knitting, yes knitting. Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, he wound down his window, turned on the loudspeaker and yelled, “PULL OVER!” “NO,” the young lady yelled back, “IT’S A SCARF!”
In Guyana there is a law against tints. When the law was first enforced, vehicle owners were forced to pay thousands of dollars to remove the tints from their vehicles, and in some instances had to change their windows because they were factory-tinted, meaning that the tints were within the glass and therefore could not be removed. Today when you drive around Guyana, there are hundreds of vehicles with tints. And some officials are not setting an example; their vehicles are the more heavilytinted. One fellow is so brazen and his vehicle so heavily

tinted, that there is a sign on his backwind screen boasting that you cannot see him, and you really cannot, how darkly tinted is the vehicle. There is also a law against driving under the influence (DUI) and there are breathalyzers to help the police in making a case against those driving under the influence. Many police, however, prefer not to haul those found DUI before the courts. In fact, the preoccupation with DUI is as such that some police patrols actually go and park outside some of the more popularly frequented watering holes, and when the patrons get out and drive off in the cars they are pulled over and told that they have to go to the station to do a breathalyzer test. Most drivers are able to convince the patrols that prey outside these watering holes not to go to the station. One night, the police pull over a driver who is weaving all over the road. They order him out of the car and tell him that he has to go to the station to do a breathalyzer test. In his intoxicated state he agrees.
But just then the police receive a report about a robbery nearby. They tell the man to remain where he is, they will be right back, and they proceed to run down the road to where the robbery is taking place. The man waits and waits and after a while gets impatient and decides to drive home. When he arrives home, he tells his wife that he is going to bed, and to tell anyone that comes knocking that he is ill and has been in bed all day. A few minutes later, the police knock on the door. They ask if Mr X lives there and his wife says yes. They ask to see him and his wife says that he is in bed ill and has been there all day. H o w e v e r, t h e p o l i c e have his driver’s licence. THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
Ramotar’s prorogation gamble Mr. Ramotar had no intention of facing an election before his five-year tenure was up. The reason – he simply wanted his five years. Mr. Ramotar loves the travels, ceremonies, and symbolism. He wanted these inconsequential fantasies to last for five years. Any analyst studying Ramotar’s total presidential deportment could detect the infatuation with the lighter side of power. Personally, I don’t think Ramotar works hard. He doesn’t give any strong indication that he works hard. In all fairness, Bharrat Jagdeo was a workaholic. The difference between Ramotar and Jagdeo (forthcoming column on the comparison) is
that Ramotar is not serious about the complications, burdens, demands and pressures of the presidency. He is happy to leave that to others he feels are more capable. Mr. Jagdeo was obsessed with the presidency and the power it gave him. In his wisdom to ignore the no-confidence vote, Ramotar took the decision to go with the constitutional court which bizarrely is headed not only by one judge but the same judge; the position does not rotate. Only Carl Greenidge and this columnist in this entire country have publicly voiced a disapproving position on that. Mr. Ramotar believed that
given the historical slowness of the courts, the final ruling would be arrived at around the time that his tenure was up, so he would have defeated the no-confidence motion. No doubt the extreme slowness of the constitutional court to pronounce on the final decision on budget cuts was taken into consideration by the President. What threw a monkey wrench in the works was the position of the combined opposition, that it would not reply to affidavits filed in the courts to defeat the noconfidence motion. The opposition knew that the final judgement would have come in the next billion years and
that anyway, to contest in court is to concede that the judiciary has total control of Parliament, which is not the case in Guyana. Mr. Ramotar found himself in a quandary. Advice came his way that it would be best to preempt the opposition by stopping Parliament from meeting to table the no-confidence motion. Dissolution was not an option since the intention is to stretch his rule until the time when his five years are up. Ramotar settled for prorogation. Prorogation was like killing two birds with one stone. The no-confidence vote dies thus no election in three months’ time. And he has more than a year to play with since he can resuscitate the House in six months’ time. If the opposition re-tables the no-confidence motion, he can then dissolve the House and hold elections in four months’ time. It means that from an election in March 2015 due to a successful no-confidence motion in November 2014, Ramotar may face an election at the end of 2015. It will cut short his tenure by a year, but
at least he got almost a year more in office, because had the no-confidence proceeded in November 2014, he would have had to face the electorate three months later. But Ramotar may still get his 2016 date with the electorate. The House has to pass the Budget in April. Ramotar knows that he has a vital card left to play. His advisors are going to invent a generous Budget then Ramotar will recall the House. If the House votes against the Budget, he will prorogue the House again and cry to the people of Guyana that the opposition ruined one of the most saccharine budgets in Guyana’s history. He prorogues the House again, takes another six months, then dissolves Parliament and calls elections four months later. We are talking about the year 2016. This is my opinion of Ramotar ’s reason for prorogation. Some questions need to be confronted. First, Ramotar is uncertain about his selection (not election). Ramotar’s main champion for his continuation is Bharrat Jagdeo. Jagdeo’s preferred choice is his nephew-in-law,
Frederick Kissoon Robert Persaud, but Jagdeo knows that there will be a ferocious fight that he may lose. He doesn’t want to gamble with Persaud, so he will fight for Ramotar. A Ramotar presidency is a Jagdeo presidency. Secondly, many in the PPP leadership believe that the PPP will either win back the presidency or plurality again, but whichever, the PPP candidate will be the President and they want it. But they are uncertain of either one of these two victories with Ramotar as the candidate, so they are going to do battle with both Ramotar and Jagdeo. Thirdly, where do these permutations leave the PNC and AFC? Street protest seems to be out of the question. Both PNC and AFC feel that the PPP is mortally wounded and will lose at the next election. I hope so.

“Do not get confrontational with ranks, just call me” Commander of the Police ‘A’ Division Clifton Hicken has urged that members of the public should not get confrontational with ranks if they feel that they are not being afforded the satisfaction they legitimately deserve. Hicken, who two Mondays ago, delivered his plan to police the city through the current festive season and beyond, is urging citizens to make use of the recourse provided by the police, which is to contact senior officers via personal cellular phone numbers provided at the stations, and which are now being made public. This posture of making public the cellular phone numbers of senior police
officers throughout the country is the brainchild of Commissioner of Police (ag) Seelall Persaud, and has been welcomed by many. “This situation has been working well for us,” Commander Hicken told this newspaper yesterday. It has been observed that at every police station, a notice board has been erected on which is placed the photograph of the station sergeant, along with crime tips, information about what the members of the public are to expect from the police as well as the rights of prisoners. The notice board also contains the cellular phone numbers of the Commander and his deputy, the District Detective Officer and the Sub-
- Commander Hicken Divisional Officer. According to Hicken, the move is creating an atmosphere for members of the public to have recourse whenever there is any misconduct by ranks they encounter, particularly at the station. “I will continue to advocate at this level that if you go to station, and for some reason or the other, based on your interpretation, the police did not give you the satisfaction you need in terms of addressing your problem, don’t get confrontational with the police because that will
escalate the problem,” the Commander stated. He added that by taking this approach, an environment is being created whereby the police and members of the public can get along better with each other. Yesterday, the police force through its public relations office issued a list with the cellular phone numbers of all the Divisional Commanders and the officers below them, including all Divisional Traffic Officers. Hicken, speaking for his division, told this newspaper that members of the public can contact him and his officers
Commander Clifton Hicken any time of the day or night. “While we’re gonna increase our efficiency through this process, we expect you to avoid getting into confrontation with the
police at the lower level, seeing that you can meet the commander and all his officers at their level,” Hicken stated, adding that all reports are treated with utmost seriousness. But some officers are not too keen on the move, claiming that the privilege could be abused by citizens. “There are people who might get stopped by the police in the wee hours of the morning, and because they have our direct numbers they might want to call us at that hour. Cops deny making carjacking victim wait while they purchased food The Guyana Police Force is refuting allegations that a carjacking victim had to wait until ranks finished buying from a Chinese restaurant before responding to his report. In an article in last Monday’s edition of this publication, Fharis Mohamed claimed that police were tardy in responding to his report, and that they failed to put up roadblocks to thwart the carjacker. The incident occurred two Mondays ago in Diamond Housing Scheme. In a release issued yesterday, it was stated that the Force was “vigorously disputing the allegation that the ranks of the police mobile patrol were at a Chinese restaurant at the time when they were contacted by the victim, and that he had to wait until they were finished purchasing food and drinks before any action was taken on his report, as is claimed in the article.” According to the release, the issue of the patrol ranks being at a Chinese restaurant
“is apparently a new dimension added to the matter, as it was raised and dealt with at a Community Outreach Meeting held by the Divisional Commander on Saturday November 22, 2014, at the Diamond Secondary School, “and nothing of the sort was mentioned.” “The Guyana Police Force wishes to clarify that upon receipt of the report, and taking into consideration the time that had elapsed since the commission of the alleged carjacking, the decision was taken by the patrol ranks at that stage to immediately inform other police patrols and stations of the incident via the radio communications network, rather than to pursue the perpetrator,” the release said. “Efforts are continuing to be made in order to recover the stolen motor vehicle, which has not been located so far.” Mohammed, who works with an Eleventh Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara taxi
New multi-billion V/Hoop... (From page 15) have to be delivered for the facility’s daily operations. Almost 800 piles had to be driven for the foundation of the plant, while a $242M contract was awarded to BK International for the fuel wharf. The operation, GPL said, is expected to significantly reduce the instances of power outages, while far-reaching locations can expect to benefit. Last week’s heavy downpour left citizens battling over six inches of flood water which was sustained by a several-hourlong high tide.
All must play their part... (From page 3) mental effects. She asked those gathered, “What are your contributions in the elimination of gender-based violence and to the realization of our theme ‘from peace in the home to peace in the world, let us end genderbased violence?’” “As parents, what are you doing to ensure that your children will respect each other and will not see violence as the solution to anything?” She then turned her attention to teachers and questioned whether there are still certain “boy duties and girl duties” in the schools or subjects that girls should do and those that boys should do. She said that if that is the case, a new trend is needed. Instead, La Fleur charged that children should be encouraged to do the subjects they deem important and
equality on all grounds must exist in the schools. The bosses did not slip the attention of La Fleur as she went on to question if employers are promoting equality in the workplace. The UNFPA representative said, “We all, as individual actors in society, must ask what rules and norms are we promoting”. She said that various religious bodies too must introspect to see what part they are playing to end gender-based equality. La Fleur charged that all seek to stamp out “motherhood in childhood and pledged that the UNFPA will continue to support the work galvanized to put an end to gender-based violence “as we step up interventions aimed at reducing and eventually preventing genderbased violence.” (Abena Rockcliffe)

service, said he had to watch helplessly as a gun-toting carjacker escaped with his Toyota Spacio. He had bought the vehicle some two weeks ago. Mohamed said that the incident occurred a few yards from his place of employment around 20:45 hours, two Mondays ago. The driver said that he was in his vehicle, PSS 9658, near Eleventh Avenue, Diamond Housing Scheme, when a gunman opened the door and snatched his cellular phone. “The gunman then told me to exit the vehicle and I pleaded and cooperated with the gunman for him not to shoot. However, just as the
gunman drove off, I called a taxi service at the head of the scheme to inform them my car was just hijacked,” he said. Mohammed said he also called a friend who was “just around the corner” and they were planning to pursue the stolen vehicle. Instead, he saw a police patrol van in front of a Chinese restaurant on Ninth Avenue and sought help from them. Mohamed said that the policemen promised to send transmissions to all police outlets. The taxi driver said he then asked the Police to chase after the vehicle and “their exact words were that their vehicle can’t do that because it can’t drive speed and it
doesn’t pick up fast enough.” He claimed that he then had to wait until the ranks had finished purchasing food and drinks at the restaurant before they instructed him to go to Diamond/Grove Police Station and lodge a report. At that station, Mohammed said ranks took a report and when he asked if they had heard the “transmission” they said no. He told this publication that it was then that the policemen proceeded to send a transmission which Mohamed heard other stations acknowledging. “The police said they were going to have roadblocks. I then had a few
friends with me and we began to patrol the road from Diamond to Le Repentir Cemetery which we saw no road blocks,” Mohammed said. He went on to note that the owner of A&A Cabs who was coming from his residence in Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, had stopped and informed several stations along the way of the carjacking. According to him, the taxi service owner did not see any road blocks. “Some of my friends’ cars patrolled from Diamond to Soesdyke, Diamond to Mocha and Le Repentir Cemetery and not any roadblock,” he said.

TEN WOMEN KILLED A questionable sentence BY LOVERS THIS YEAR Letters... Where your views make the news
DEAR EDITOR, It was with disgust that I read your report in the November 12, 2014 edition “Man gets suspended sentence for 67 kilos of cocaine”. Magistrate Alex Moore sentenced the man to a suspended jail time after he pleaded guilty to trafficking in more than 67 kilograms of cocaine and for being in unlawful possession of 125, 12-gauge shotgun cartridges and 115, .32 rounds of ammunition. He was also fined a measly $2.5M or US$12,500. This case highlights the disparity in sentencing, where other sections of society are sentenced to draconian time in prison for far lesser amounts of cocaine or offences. I am baffled also as to the magistrate’s reasoning in sentencing. Is it that he is intimidated by the man’s obvious connections to the PPP and by extension the government or was there collusion between him and the defendant? Which brings me to an even more shameful development and concern that go deep into the dilemma in which Guyana finds itself. The defense attorney for the defendant and his family was James Bond, an APNU Member of Parliament and senior lawyer for the PNC. If there was any illegal collusion (read bribe) between the defendant and magistrate, I am hard pressed to believe that the defence lawyer was not involved in the negotiations and/or also benefited financially for his services, beyond his legal fees. There are other disturbing factors to this case that have racial overtones, but which I will leave to another place and time. Suffice to say, that it is similar to PPP tactics, of getting Afro-Guyanese to do their dirty work. Bryan Thomas
Action is needed... From page 5 Parliament for no apparent reason. Its capital city, Georgetown is the dirtiest and the most stinking in the world. Its wacked city council, dilapidated infrastructure coupled with its collapsing health care and decaying educational system have turned Guyana into fifth world country. The leaders of the PPP, especially the less-schooled General Secretary have often heaped blame on the opposition for the woes of the country in order to hide their incompetency and their corrupt practices. But they are the ones who have screwedup the country for the past fifteen years and the poor and the working class are now paying the price. If Guyana is to survive as a country, the people have to stop the corrupt and inhumane PPP regime from marginalizing a large section of the population and from raping the treasury to enrich their friends and relatives. PPP political tribalism must be weakened, but in order for this to be achieved, the sizable apathetic population needs to be roused from their slumber and take to the streets with APNU to make their voices heard. To remain apathetic only serves to empower the PPP regime to do whatever they want to do and suffer no consequences. The people can no longer remain apathetic as the PPP regime has repeatedly violated their rights, ignored the constitution and disrespected the majority opposition. The proroguing of Parliament was foolish and spiteful but for the do-
nothing president and his cabinet to wrap arms around the disgraceful, foul-mouth and vulgar behaviour of the AG is highly immoral. It also shows that the regime is so desperate that it will grab at straws to maintain its hold on power. Let’s face it, the PPP is quite comfortable with the constitution they have criticized for over a decade and which they had promised to change upon gaining power but has refused to do so for the last 22 years. Instead, they have manipulated the constitution and if the people do not agitate for change it will probably never happen. In order for change to be effective, the opposition has to educate the populace about what the constitution is, and how changing it would benefit them. For if the people simply sit and do nothing, they will face an even more ominous situation and will rightfully blame themselves for their misery. The power of the people is stronger than the people in power. Guyanese must always bear this in mind if they are serious about changing the government and move Guyana forward. By Abena Rockcliffe Even though it seems as if the figures of deadly violence against women have significantly reduced as compared to last year, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster remains worried. As she addressed those in attendance at an inter-faith service held by her Ministry yesterday, the Minister pointed out that 10 women have been killed so far this year by their lovers as compared to over 20 at the end of last year. She said that much needs to be done to further reduce this figure. The inter-faith service was held in observance of International Day for the elimination of violence against women. It was held under the theme “From peace in the home to peace in the world, let us end gender based violence.” The ceremony was hosted at the Ministry of Human Services’ Lamaha and East Streets branch. It was well attended by individuals from various religious-based organizations, Non Governmental Organizations, staff of the Ministry, Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) and at least two gender-based organizations. Minister Webster, who was the keynote speaker at the event, informed the gathering that the occasion marked the beginning of a 16day intense activism period to commemorate the elimination of gender-based violence. Webster told the audience, inclusive of men, that males must recognize the need to treat women with respect and seek to protect them. She added that males should realize that their presence on earth is due to their mother, and in that sense, honour them. The Minister encouraged that men be cognizant of the role they play in the world as well as the equally important role played by women. Speaking on sexual violence in the home, the Minister said that many girls
Minister Jennifer Webster under the age of 15 in Guyana have experienced some form of sexual abuse at the hands of their loved ones in their own homes. She noted too that this causes them to suffer from emotional trauma which is something they have to live with for their entire lifetime. She asserted that it is indeed a sad situation when one is violated like that in the home, a place where “we all should feel protected.” The Minister charged, “We must rise against that.” She went on to note that what is equally disturbing is the fact that many victims of sexual
She also called for more persons to report incidents of domestic violence and pointed out that more than 35 per cent of women and girls experience some form of violent behaviour in their lifetime. A young group called “The Messengers” delivered a memorable rendition of the popular song “Like a bridge over troubled waters.” The performance was significant in that it was an all-male group and they managed to capture the spirit of the event within the performance, perfect harmony and all. Sean Thompson recited a self-written piece titled “Let the women speak.” In his poem, he spoke about the burden women carry twice, when they are abused and when they remember the ordeal. Thompson also managed to reflect on a realistic account of the emotional pain women feel, blaming themselves for their suffering at the hands of a lover. However, he ended the poem with words of encouragement and upliftment. Tiffany Douglas, the Ministry’s very own, performed a cover of Pink’s song “Try.” In brief remarks before she began her rendition, Douglas touched on the importance to
It is high time we heed the cry of women…lawmakers and investigators must play their part – Minister Webster abuse end up without justice. Against this background she urged that lawmakers and investigators alike recognize that these are issues that must be dealt with in a timely manner to negate a chance of victims feeling as if they “have nowhere to turn.” “The time has come to heed the cry of women,” asserted the Minister as she stressed her conviction that “a society that does not uphold the rights of women can never be unified…violence against women must have no place in Guyana.”
“research your partner’s past and his generation.” She said that women must now seek to have an idea of the trend and patterns of the way men in the family treat women before moving to the next stage in a relationship. A line in the song that evoked thought was, “funny how the heart can be deceived more than just a couple times.” The ceremony also had prayers by representatives of the Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Bahai communities, and a moment of silence for women who lost their lives due to domestic violence.

City Hall worries over cost to clean covered canals
Traffic congestion has led to moves to cover city canals. The “Strapped-for-cash” City Council is checking its coffers and is already worried that it will not be able to bear the financial cost of having to remove the covers which are expected to cover city canals to permit increased parking space. The Council, in a public missive, expressed concern that they were not consulted in the talks to cover the city canals even though they have the responsibility of maintaining Georgetown. The Council said it is worried about the financial, health and other implications that may come with the covering of the waterways. “The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) was not consulted on this proposal... This is worrying because the Mayor and Councillors are the people’s representatives. They should be properly informed and involved in any major project, such as the one announced, to add or take away value from the economy and general welfare of the city.” Covering canals, they said, to provide additional
space to facilitate parking is both adding and taking from the city value. However, the Council merely heard the announcement in the local media but has no other information about timeframes, objectives, engineering and technical logistics, and related risks and benefits to the citizens of Georgetown, it was stated. If the justification to cover main canals in the city is to facilitate parking of vehicles because they are being imported at a fast rate in the country, then it has to be said that it is a very simplistic way of looking at an emerging issue that requires more in-depth study and general consultations with all stakeholders. “Covering canals could not be the solution to the problem of parking; it will trigger other issues.” It was mentioned further that covering the canals has serious financial implications for the Georgetown Municipality. “Council will have to remove and replace these covers every time it wants to clean the canals.
Therefore, the cash- strapped council will be required to find more money to clean and keep these waterways flowing.” The Council said that if one thinks of the agency’s shallow coffers which hardly provides basic services to the citizens, it can be easily seen the extra burden the agency will be saddled with if the initiative is to go through. The Council said that the covering of the canals has serious implications for solid waste management. “Some time ago, council experimented with this very approach to parking on South Street. What city officials discovered, at that time, was that individuals were removing the covers to dump waste in the canals. This affected the free flow of water through these channels. Eventually, the council had to remove these covers; that approach did not work.” They expressed more concern about the actual parking of vehicles over its canals, the utilization of space, in the city, and revenue. “If parking over these canals is free then who
will stand the expenses associated with it. If it is paid parking then who will be responsible for collecting that revenue?” “Such an initiative must be accompanied by a public education programme. This will allow citizens to adjust to this new arrangement, in the city. After all, these facilities are collectively owned by the people and they and their representatives should be allowed to participate in this initiative, from the planning stage to its implementation.” Cabinet Secretary Roger Luncheon explained last week that the government had taken a decision to try out the initiative forwarded by current Housing Minister Irfaan Ali to cover the city canals for parking. Several stakeholders have already expressed concern of the plans while other persons believe it will ease the parking issues facing the city. The government will first engage in trials at the Avenue-of-the-Republic canal and the Croal Street and South Road waterway.

IMF wants to know what PetroCaribe money was used for in St Vincent WASHINGTON, USA — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says it is monitoring the potential impact of Venezuela’s current economic stress on PetroCaribe, the country’s oil alliance with several Caribbean islands, and it also wants to know what PetroCaribe money was used for in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), Merco Press reported. According to SVG Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, Caracas has invited PetroCaribe member countries to a meeting about “reaffirming” their commitment to the initiative, the brainchild of the former Venezuelan president, the late Hugo Chavez. IMF Western Hemisphere advisor, Elie Canetti, told reporters that the IMF’s main concern “is that we know Venezuela is going through increasing financial stress, and oil prices have dropped from around US$120 a barrel to mid 70s a barrel and
Elie Canetti Venezuela is hugely dependent on selling oils.” “So, we are mindful and concerned about the feasibility of PetroCaribe continuing, certainly at the level it has been, and we are looking into what will be the impact on Caribbean countries,” Cantelli said. “So if PetroCaribe is, in
the extreme, wound down, or if PetroCaribe financing benefits become less generous, it is something that will have to be taken in account in the fiscal strategy,” he said, adding that the Washington-based financial institution is trying to understand what exactly PetroCaribe money was used to pay for in SVG. According to analysts, the initiative, which allows countries to pay for part of their oil imports from Venezuela over a 20-year period at low interest rates, will have to be modified or discontinued amidst the country’s worsening economic situation. In addition to SVG, several other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Jamaica, Belize, Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Guyana, and Suriname are members of PetroCaribe.
More troops deployed in Ferguson to guard against fresh riots Reuters) - Missouri’s governor ordered hundreds more National Guard troops on Tuesday to the St. Louis suburb rocked by rioting after a white policeman was cleared in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager, while the local mayor said the governor did not do enough to protect businesses from looting. Attorneys for the family of Michael Brown, the 18-yearold shot to death in Ferguson by officer Darren Wilson in August, condemned as biased the grand jury process that led to Monday’s decision not to bring criminal charges against Wilson. The killing in Ferguson, a predominantly black city with a white-dominated power structure, underscores the sometimes tense nature of U.S. race relations. Violent protests and looting flared after the St. Louis County grand jury’s decision, with Governor Jay Nixon calling the resulting damage “heartbreaking.” About a dozen Ferguson buildings burned overnight and 61 people were arrested on charges including burglary, illegal weapons possession and unlawful assembly, police said. Police said protesters fired guns at them, lit patrol cars on fire and hurled bricks into their lines. Police fired tear gas and flashbang canisters at protesters.

“Lives and property must be protected. This community deserves to have peace,” Nixon told a news conference, saying about 700 guard troops were deployed on Monday and hundreds more will be out on Tuesday night to protect homes and businesses. He said there are more than 2,200 guardsmen now in the region. “We must do better and
we will,” Nixon said. Criticizing the governor’s response to the unrest, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said the National Guard “was not deployed in enough time to save all of our businesses.”“The decision to delay the deployment of the National Guard is deeply concerning,” Knowles told a news conference.

The four-times World Player of the Year has scored 206 goals with his favoured left foot, 38 with his right, eight with his head and one, which should have been ruled out, with his hand. The previous record has been held by former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra since 1955, which marked the end of the Spaniard’s 15year career with the Basque club. Zarra scored his 251 goals in 277 appearances, while Argentina captain Messi needed 289 games. He matched former Real Madrid and Schalke 04 forward Raul’s Champions League scoring record of 71 goals last month. Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as leaders Real Madrid subdued Eibar 4-0. Mid-table Eibar, whose entire squad is worth roughly as much as Ronaldo’s annual wages of $24.8 million, created several scoring chances but were outclassed by Real’s galaxy of superstars. The latest victory put the world’s richest club by income two points clear at the top with 30 points from 12 matches during which they have amassed 46 goals, 20 of them coming from Ronaldo in 11 appearances. Aguero keeps City’s campaign Chelsea thrash on track, Messi breaks record Schalke to reach last 16
Sergio Aguero is only the second player to score a Champions League hat-trick against Bayern Munich Sergio Aguero struck twice in the closing minutes to complete a hat-trick and revive Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League hopes with a 3-2 win over tenman Bayern Munich. City’s challenge had looked all but over after Aguero’s early penalty was cancelled out by quickfire goals from Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski before halftime. But Aguero seized on a mistake from the otherwise brilliant Alonso to equalise with five minutes remaining and then broke through again after a Jerome Boateng error for a brilliant winner. The victory was City’s first of the competition and brought them level with Roma and CSKA Moscow in Group E with a trip to the Italian capital to come next month. Lionel Messi became the record Champions League goalscorer and Luis Suarez opened his account for Barcelona as the Catalan giants cruised to a 4-0 win over APOEL Nicosia. Suarez put Barça ahead with his first goal for the club since his £64m summer move from Liverpool before Messi took centre-stage with a hat-trick all with his less-favoured right foot. The first of those saw him break former Real Madrid striker Raul’s tally of 71 to
make the Argentina superstar the leading scorer in the competition’s history. It was the second notable scoring record that Messi had broken in the space of three days, with the 27-year-old having also become the all-time leading Spanish La Liga marksman at the weekend with his hat-trick against Sevilla. That treble moved Messi onto 253 La Liga goals and broke Telmo Zarra’s 59-yearold mark of 251. As well as being a memorable night for Messi and Suarez, the victory keeps Barcelona in with a chance of pipping Paris SaintGermain to top spot in Group F. The Parisian club maintained their edge over Barça at the top of Group F with a comfortable 3-1 win over Ajax at the Parc des Princes. Edinson Cavani opened and completed the scoring with Davy Klaassen making things interesting midway through the second half, cancelling out the Uruguayan’s opener before Zlatan Ibrahimovic restored PSG’s lead. With Barcelona also victorious in Cyprus, the winners of the section will now be decided in a head-tohead clash in Spain in the final round of matches, when Ajax need to avoid defeat at home to APOEL to secure third.
Hector Herrera helped ease Porto into pole position to claim top spot in Group H with a 3-0 victory over BATE Borisov. Herrera fired the visitors ahead after 56 minutes at the Borisov Arena and set up captain Jackson Martinez and then substitute Cristian Tello to secure a fourth victory in five attempts and leave the Portuguese side on 13 points with just one game to play. Mikel San Jose kept Athletic Bilbao’s European aspirations alive by ending Shakhtar Donetsk’s hopes of topping Group H. San Jose’s 68th-minute strike at the Arena Lviv secured a 1-0 win for the Spaniards and that, coupled with leaders Porto’s 3-0 victory in Borisov, ensured the Portuguese side will head the group with the Ukrainians second no matter what happens when the two sides meet at the Estadio do Dragao in the final round of fixtures. Sporting Lisbon ended Maribor’s Champions League hopes with a 3-1 win that was delayed by 50 minutes due to floodlight failure at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The home side led 2-1 at half-time after Carlos Mane had put them ahead and a stunner from Nani doubled the lead before a Jefferson Nascimento own goal closed the gap. (FIFA)

Didier Drogba scored his 50th goal in European football when he tapped in Chelsea’s fourth Chelsea qualified for the Champions League knockout phase with a group match to spare as they ruthlessly swept aside Roberto Di Matteo’s Schalke. The Blues, knowing a win would put them in the last 16, led through John Terry’s header after 86 seconds. A slick move ended with Willian driving in the second, before Schalke defender Jan Kirchhoff headed into his own net as Chelsea led 3-0 at half-time. Didier Drogba tapped in before setting up Ramires to head in the fifth. Chelsea substitutes Drogba and Ramires netted in the last 15 minutes to cap a flawless performance which merited the emphatic scoreline for the visitors in Gelsenkirchen. The Blues’ superiority in the Premier League, where they are unbeaten in 12 matches and lead by six points, has led to many onlookers asking whether they can go through the entire top-flight season without losing. On this evidence, where the Blues suffocated Schalke
of possession and then regularly sliced them apart when springing forward on the attack, Jose Mourinho’s men could also be a difficult team to beat for Europe’s elite. Mourinho is Chelsea’s most successful manager after winning six trophies in his first spell at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007, but was unable to land the one prize craved by Blues owner Roman Abramovich the Champions League. Instead, it was Di Matteo who lifted the biggest prize in European club football when he masterminded Chelsea’s victory in the 2012 tournament. But if Chelsea continue to produce this quality of performance when the knockout stage resumes in the New Year, then Mourinho will believe he can join the Italian in turning the west London side into European champions. German side Schalke produced an abject performance that was riddled with defensive errors. But
their mistakes were brutally exploited by Chelsea’s desire, sharpness and invention. Before kick-off, Mourinho stressed the importance of sealing their last-16 place with a win - and therefore rendering the final group match against Sporting Lisbon meaningless. The Blues boss demanded a fast start from his players and allowed himself a wry smile when they achieved exactly that through Terry’s header. After Diego Costa’s low shot forced a corner inside the opening minute, ex-England skipper Terry out-jumped two Schalke defenders to power Cesc Fabregas’s set piece into the top corner. Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois barely had a save to make on a quiet night although the Belgian did almost concede a fortuitous equaliser after 13 minutes. Cameroon forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s deflected shot looped over Courtois, who was grateful to see the ball cannon back off his crossbar. (BBCsport)

Australian batsman Phil Hughes: Phil Simmons hopes ‘in critical condition’ Australian recovers as he did Australian batsman Phil Hughes has undergone emergency surgery and was in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital after he was hit on the head by a bouncer in a domestic first-class cricket match on Tuesday. Hughes, who was wearing a protective batting helmet, reeled back and then bent forward momentarily after the impact of the short-pitch delivery before falling to the ground. He was treated and ventilated on the field by medical experts, including doctors who were flown by helicopter onto the Sydney Cricket Ground, before being taken to nearby St Vincent’s Hospital by ambulance. Hospital spokesman David Faktor said Hughes arrived in a critical condition and had scans before undergoing surgery. The hospital confirmed later on Tuesday that Hughes was out of surgery and remained in a critical condition in intensive care. The Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales, where Hughes was born and
Hughes being held by teammates after being hit. raised, and South Australia, where he now plays, was cancelled. South Australia Cricket Association high performance manager Tim Nielsen said the outcome of the surgery was unlikely to be known for one or two days, and he requested privacy for the Hughes family and friends who had gathered at the hospital. The 25-year-old Hughes was considered a strong contender to play in the first Test
against India next week if injured skipper Michael Clarke was forced out by a lingering hamstring strain. He was batting confidently on 63 when he was hit on the back, left side of the head by a bouncer from New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott. Hughes has played 26 Test matches for Australia since his debut in 2009 but hasn’t been able to cement a regular spot in the starting line-up. (Agencies)
Private league project...
Former West Indies batsman Phil Simmons says he hopes Australia’s Phil Hughes is as lucky as he was with his recovery from a serious head injury. Hughes is in a critical condition after being struck on the head by a bouncer in a state match in Sydney on Tuesday. Simmons was hit by a David Lawrence ball in 1988 but made a full recovery following life-saving brain surgery. “I was out of hospital in eight days, which none of the doctors expected. I hope he pulls through,” said Simmons. Simmons was the same age as Hughes - 25 - when he took a blow on the head from a Lawrence short ball in fading light in Bristol during a tour match against Gloucestershire. His heart stopped and he required emergency surgery at Frenchay Hospital. But Simmons, who unlike Hughes was not wearing a helmet, made a full recovery, playing in a charity match in the Caribbean four months later before resuming his international career the following year. “My injury was as serious as you can get,” Simmons, now Ireland coach, told BBC World Service. “I had to have emergency surgery to have a clot removed from my brain.
Simmons played 26 Tests and 143 one -day internationals for West Indies “I was written off as never to play again and put in a longterm unit for head injuries, but I was out in eight days.” Simmons also said he felt sympathy for New South Wales bowler Sean Abbott, whose delivery struck Hughes on the back of the head beneath his helmet after the batsman had missed a pull shot. Lawrence, who played five Tests for England before his career was ended by a horrific knee injury, was deeply affected by the aftermath of his delivery to Simmons. “I had known ‘Syd’ from a long time before,” said Simmons. “We were friends
before that through [West Indies paceman] Courtney Walsh. “My wife told me when I was in the hospital bed he came to visit. He was holding my hand with tears running down his cheek. “A bowler is never to blame. It’s just one of those unfortunate things that happens once in every long while.” Simmons said his wife hid the full details of his injury from him for two years after he regained consciousness, helping him focus on returning to the cricket field. “All I thought about when I came through was that I wanted to play again,” he added. “I wasn’t studying all the tubes all over my body. “That was my catalyst. I looked forward to playing cricket again and playing for the West Indies.” Hughes, who received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation at the side of the pitch, is in an induced coma at St Vincent’s Hospital after surgery. Doctors will provide an update on his condition on Wednesday. “My wife called me as soon as it happened,” added Simmons. “He is the same age as I was with the same name. I think there’s an omen somewhere that he will pull through and I hope so.” (BBCsport)

Reading between the lines, Europcar manager Jean-Rene Bernaudeau told sports daily L’Equipe: “There is always the will to create a NBA style professional league and I’m against it.” Russian outfit Katusha and Spain’s Movistar have also opted against joining Velon. At the end of 2012, eight teams founded the World Series Cycling (WSC), a breakaway league project that failed to materialize.
Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt will clash in a new shortened, faster form of the game ahead of the Australian Open that organisers Tuesday said they hope will revolutionise tennis. In a world first, the 17time Grand Slam champion will play his long-time Australian rival in a Sydney exhibition to showcase the new concept developed by Tennis Australia. They will face off in a best-of-five sets match on January 12 that will feature four rule variations — no advantage scoring, no service lets, tiebreakers at three games all and sets of first-to-four games. It is expected to last about half as a long as a normal fivesetter. The format has been piloted at clubs across Australia and is being billed as the Twenty20 of tennis, a reference to the fast and furious form of cricket that has proved a huge hit. (AFP)

Guyanese distance athlete, Lionel D’Andrade defended the Suriname Marathon title he won last year on Saturday when he obliterated the field to win the grueling 26.2 miles contest in 2h:57m which was ten minutes ahead of the next finisher in the race. “It was a challenge for me, because I was not at the start line when the race ran off and secondly, I’m recovering from Chick V (Chickungunya Virus). So I really struggled, but I’m happy to have defended my
title and that was my goal going into this Marathon,” D’Andrade, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday. The athlete, who is a regular feature in Trinidad and Tobago, said that he would like to thank his sponsor, Builders Lumber Yard for always supporting him. D’Andrade said that the race more or less brings the curtain down on what has been a successful season. Sykerio Simison was second in the open category of Marathon in 3h:04m and Guillermo Udenhout third in
3h:07m to round out the top three. The race had three other Guyanese male, which included Winston Missigher, who placed sixth as Lindon Harrison and Llwellyn Gardner, finished ninth and 10th respectively but won their Masters’ groups. In the women’s race, two Guyanese finished in the top three. Marlet Carolien of the Netherlands won in 3h:29m while Guyanese Euleen Josiah-Tanner (3h:41m) and Cyrleen Phillips (4h:09m) finished in the second and third positions respectively.

Director of Prisons Mr. Dale Erskin (L), Mr. Keith Cholmondeley (R) CEO of Demerara Mutual Life and Mr. Donald Sonclair hold a copy of the MOU Possibly for the first time in the history of bodybuilding in Guyana, prison inmates will be competing with athletes from other gyms nationally and internationally at the Flex Night International event which will be held on Sunday December 7 at the National Cultural Centre. This development takes to another level the unfolding three-way relationship that involves Flex Night Incorporated, Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd. and the Guyana Prison Service.
The Georgetown Prison now boasts a gym facility – Republicans Flex-In Gym - the result of financial support from Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd, and technical assistance from Directors of Flex Night Inc. This initiative itself grew out of a paradigm shift announced by the Minister of Home Affairs in 2012 whereby the emphasis would fall more upon correction and rehabilitation than upon punishment. With financial inputs from
Demerara Mutual, an MOU was signed, equipment was acquired and both inmates and officers were trained in the essentials of gym management and basic training techniques. The entire sporting establishment will, on December 7, be applauding this breakthrough on the part of Flex Night Inc. and the Guyana Prison Service in attracting those representatives to the bodybuilding stage. The event starts at 18:00hrs sharp.
Private league project in the works again Reuters - The prospect of a private cycling league raised its head again on Tuesday when 11 top teams announced the creation of Velon, a venture they say will help the sport develop further — without saying how exactly. The 11 teams — Sky, Belkin, BMC, Garmin, Lotto, OPQS, Orica-GreenEdge, Giant, Lampre, Tinkoff-Saxo and Trek — say they want a new calendar, plan to introduce new technology,
such as on-bike cameras, and create a “better economic future for the sport”. “The existing, sponsor only, business model is fragile for all teams,” Velon CEO Graham Bartlett said in a statement. “We need to change this to a more rounded one with fans at the heart of it, investing in new technological initiatives to generate greater excitement from the races and bring the sport closer to its
fans.” The statement, however, remained extremely vague, giving no details on how Velon will operate and how they will achieve their goals. Among the teams who are not part of the venture are Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali’s Astana, as well as the three elite French teams (Europcar, AG2R-La Mondiale and FDJ). “FDJ do not reject the (Continued on page 29)

(Photo: Mexsport) Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - Trinidad & Tobago is hoping that the anticipated overwhelming local support will pay big dividends, when it hosts Ecuador on December 2 in the second leg of their FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff. With a place at Canada 2015 at stake, the sides battled to a scoreless draw in the series opener earlier this month. Most of the players have already arrived and started training for the crucial encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Sweden-based Ahkeela Mollon stressed that the team was hoping for strong hometown support to drive its qualification bid. “We’ve been training really hard for the past week and the sessions have been quite good,” said the 29-year-old. “The mood is really good at the moment and we’re looking forward to this week with all the players assembling in camp. “We’re all
really excited about the 12th Warrior and the fans coming out and giving us that support. We’re at home but the key for us is to stay focus and humbled and go out there and play as we know we can and get the result.” Forward Dernelle Mascall praised the quality of the preparation, but agreed that crowd support would play a key role in the motivation to win. “We’ve been having two sessions a day so it’s really intense, but it’s all down to ensuring we’re physically ready for the match,” she pointed out. “I think we’re all really excited about playing before a large home crowd. We want that 12th warrior behind us. We would have liked to have qualified out of the CONCACAF stage, but this opportunity to do it at home is really a great opportunity for us.” After finishing fourth in the CONCACAF Women’s
Championship played last month in the United States, Trinidad missed out on automatic qualification for the Women’s World Cup. That placement, however, gave it a playoff lifeline against Ecuador. Head coach Randy Waldrum noted that training has gone well and that the squad will be ready for its upcoming assignment. “It’s going to be a big week ahead and I think everyone is ready for it,” Waldrum said. “I know the girls and the staff are all eager and focused and the people who have to get things ready off the field of play at the TTFA (Trinidad & Tobago Football Association) and the other personnel are all doing what they have to.” Trinidad is aiming to become the first team from the Caribbean to qualify for the Women’s World Cup. arbados Nation Bridgetown, Barbados - The We s t I n d i e s women’s team gain could be Barbados’ track and field loss as far as repeat javelin medallist Hayley Matthews is concerned. The Harrison College student returned from the recent tour of Australia where her breakout performances have signalled that the allrounder could be ready for the b i g l e a g u e . H o w e v e r, Matthews has indicated that she will have to give some thought to any future in track and field. “As far as track and field is concerned I have to give that some thought as I am not too sure where I want to go in track and field, but I want to go as far as possible in cricket,” said Matthews. The daughter of veteran cricketer Michael Matthews has certainly created some positives in her budding cricketing career having captained Harrison College’s under-13 cricket team in the schools’ competition. Matthews also turned out for Fuzion Boutique Passage Road team during their under13 championship reign. While Matthews was proud of her performance in Australia, she was disappointed that the West Indies went down 4-0 in the series where the conditions were cold and the pitches were

I had expected to strike that kind of form for a while. I am still focused on being an all-rounder it just so happen that I am doing better in the batting department,” stated Matthews. However, he was very cautious about reading too much into her current form. “Of course, a few good scores does not mean that the work is over. I now have to work to continue to make a contribution to the team with
both bat and ball.” Coach Sherwin Campbell was very upbeat over Matthews’ performance and the sparks from other players on what he considered a tough assignment. “We knew before we got there that Australia would be a tough challenge, they have been World Cup champions for the past five years and they have consistently done well against England. “We still competed at certain stages throughout the series and some of the outstanding performances from the places like Hayley Matthews have shown that they can compete at this level. She has shown the potential to perform at this level and fellow Bajan Shamilia Connell has shown that she could become one of the fastest bowlers on the world stage,” said the former Windies opener.
Muhammad Ali’s daughters play down father’s health fears Two of Muhammad Ali’s daughters say their father is laughing at the rumours of his demise. Ali, 72, has had Parkinson’s disease since 1984 and there has been constant speculation that his health is deteriorating. But his daughters Maryum and Hana have told BBC Sport that their father is in good spirits. “He likes being talked about. He thinks it is funny and says he isn’t dying,” said Hana. “Even when these stories come out he gets excited and thinks he is going to make the front page of the papers.” Ali appeared frail when he attended the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics but Maryum and Hana say that despite his condition, he remains alert and active. “Most stories come from people who don’t understand Parkinson’s,” said Maryum. “He has never been on his deathbed. He has Parkinson’s,
Muhammad Ali he has had it for 30 years and it is a progressive degenerative disease but he does well and is healthy outside the Parkinson’s. “For some people it is so hard for them to see the old Ali and this Ali suffering with Parkinson’s but he is doing well. He enjoys his life and he is clear-minded - he doesn’t have dementia or Alzheimers and understands who you are.”
Hana, who has been working with her sister and director Clare Lewins ahead of this week’s premiere of the “I am Ali” film says that she speaks to her father every morning when his speech is at its best. “In the morning he is at his best and he is talking clear and low and you can hear every word. It is too bad the world doesn’t get to see that,” she admits. “As the day goes on, he gets more exhausted but he is not in any physical pain and is exactly the same person inside. Sometimes when you call him and his energy is low, he just make a clicking noise down the phone. “When we visit him we know he enjoys us being there. He isn’t bedridden - he is up every day watching westerns or Elvis movies or watching movies about himself. He just loves to watch himself.” (BBCsport)
KINGSTON, Jamaica Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz have been drawn in a group of South American giants in their baptism to the CONMEBOL Copa America, the Holy Grail of South American football. Jamaica, the first Caribbean team to be invited to the tournament, will go up against two of the continent’s most successful nations in the storied Copa America, which is the oldest continental tournament in football celebrating 98 years of rivalry. The Jamaicans face Uruguay (15 titles), Argentina (14) and Paraguay (two) in Group B, it was determined at draw at Quinta Vergara in Vina del Mar, Chile, held Monday evening. In Group A, hosts Chile, guest team Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia will do battle, while six-time world champions Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela will cross swords in Group C. JFF president Captain Horace Burrell, who attended the draw, said while the Reggae Boyz are against enormous odds in a group filled with teams of rich tradition and successes on the global stage, he remains upbeat at the prospects. “I know it’s going to be an extremely great challenge, but as Jamaicans we usually perform at our best when the odds are stacked against us, or when our backs are against the wall,” he told the O B S E RV E R O N L I N E

Burrell, who was the visionary behind Jamaica’s only qualification to a senior World Cup back in France 1998, said when he realised that Argentina were drawn with Jamaica, he saw a great opportunity for revenge. “Argentina defeated us 50 in the World Cup, and though they were a great team then and perhaps a greater team now with the likes of (Lionel) Messi within their rank, we intend to as the first Caribbean team to play in the prestigious Copa America to give it the best shot at a payback,” said the veteran football boss. The Copa America 2015,
which will be hosted by eight Chilean cities, runs from June 11 to July 4. The Boyz with their confirmed participation in Copa America 2015, the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Copa America Centenario 2016 seem to have hit a golden patch with these high-profile championships. Forward Messi, 27, equalled the record in the 21st minute with a typically breathtaking strike, curling a left-footed shot around the wall and past Sevilla goalkeeper Beto into the net. He struck again from close range in the 72nd minute and scored a third six minutes later with a powerful low drive from the edge of the penalty area. Fruta Conquerors pushing on with Lucrative prizes at stake in Philip development ahead of NC verdict Arokium memorial cycle road race By Michael Benjamin The Fruta Conquerors Football Club (FCFC) is one of the more popular on the national front but has been undergoing fluctuating fortunes in tournaments. The club’s administration has initiated some changes to its structures resulting in a different coach taking over the mantle among other initiatives. This move has produced positive results and only recently the club was crowned champion of the Georgetown Football Association (GFF) Stag Beer League after several victories that culminated with a decisive 6-1 victory over Pele FC. President of that club, Wayne Forde, credits the achievement to hard work of his players and executives coupled with a staunch club structure that addresses the development of the players at all levels. Notwithstanding, a club could only be as good as the programmes and projections of its executives and by extension, those executives can only function within the purview of the objectives of the ruling football body, in this case, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF). Having agreed to this sentiment, Mr. Forde is adamant that the regularization of the sport is of utmost importance. He admitted that football has experienced debilitating fortunes recently and with the installment of the Normalization Committee, is at an important and decisive juncture. “FIFA’s intervention (through the installment of the Normalization Committee) is indeed timely because there was no indication that we were moving forward as a football family,” posits Mr. Forde. That apart, Mr. Forde said that the debacle could be regarded as a national embarrassment and exposes the inability of local football administrators to foster unity among the rank and file. Mr. Forde said that the problems existing in Guyana’s football are certainly not isolated since many other territorial associations/federations are experiencing similar challenges.
Wayne Forde “To my mind, maturity of the principals is what sets the other entities apart in resolving their conflicts,” posited Mr. Forde. He b l a m e d t h e uncompromising stance of local football executives as well as some affiliates as the catalyst to the current imbroglio. “To o man y o f o u r administrators assume postures that suggest it’s either their way or no way and we will not move forward if we adapt such behaviors,” explained the Fruta Conquerors President. It is because of such behaviors that Mr. Forde endorses the intervention of the Normalization Committee. “To my mind we have no other choice but to be optimistic that they will be successful in this difficult task before them,” he said. Mr. Forde admits that the administration of local football is no simple matter, saying that it is a very technical undertaking. He said that it would be unrealistic for anyone to expect the Normalization Committee to fully understand the complexities and inner workings of the sport. “My expectation is that they (Normalization Committee) will consult with the many stakeholders and seek their input in this matter,” Forde exhorted. Really, this is a moot point since during a meeting with members of the media the two-man delegation (FIFA), Marco Leal and Primo Corvaro, had intimated that FIFA had
taken steps to regularize activities in the sport and that the NC would engage all stakeholders in addressing the imbroglio. They had clearly stated that the committee would not be reversing any decision made by the Matthias administration. Pivotal to the arrangement also was that none of the members of the NC would be eligible for occupation of any of the administrative positions when elections are eventually held. Developments have taken an interesting twist after it was stated that the NC is currently in possession of requests from three key football entities for yearend tournaments. These include the GFA, Upper Demerara Football Association and the Kashif and Shanghai organization. Mr. Forde feels that this is indeed an interesting development that has thrown the cat among the pigeons. He said that his club has never shown any particular preference regarding the tournament it competes in but relies on the guidance of the ruling football body and they are prepared to conform to the majority consensus. That apart, Forde said that football development must continue and his club will press on with its developmental agenda. He pointed out that his club is one of the few that places heavy emphasis on its youth development programme. “I say without fear of contradiction that the Fruta Conquerors FC has the ability to field a team of competent players at any level; from the Under-13 right up to the seniors,” Forde pronounced. For now the club’s administrators are getting ready to start some major infrastructural works which include the construction of a bleacher as well as improved lighting at their Tucville Ground. “ W h i l e t h e Normalization Committee addresses its tasks, the Fruta Conquerors will continue its developmental agenda so that when that group has completed its work we will be ready to address our continued development,” exhorted Mr. Forde.

SHABAZZ appointed to CONCACAF Technical Group
Flashback! Jamaal Shabazz (left) makes a point to the Golden Jaguars on November 15, 2010 as they prepared for their return game against T&T in the Twin Island Republic just after defeating the Trinis 11.11.11. (Franklin Wilson photo) Former Golden Jaguars Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz has been appointed to the CONCACAF Technical Study Group (TSG). Shabazz, who took Guyana to the semifinal round of the CONCACAF segment for the last World Cup Qualifiers, started his first assignment with CONCACAF last week in Vera Cruz, Mexico.
Shabazz is currently in Vera Cruz doing Technical analysis for the CAC Games Men’s Tournament where the eightteam tournament is now down to the four semi finalists; Honduras, Venezuela, Cuba and hosts Mexico. Shabazz commented on his appointment: “This is a great opportunity for me to enhance
my skills as a student of the game and keep in touch with the game at the highest level in the region. “It comes at a time when I am not working with any national team and analyzing the teams and the Coaches work, puts that fire in my stomach to work at international level again.”
Mackeson 3x3 basketball workshop on today
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will be hosting a workshop today from 5pm – 7pm for players and officials at the Windjammer International Hotel ahead of Sunday’s commencement of the outdoor tournament. “A workshop on the tournament rules for the Mackeson 3x3 Basketball Tournament is scheduled for Windjammer Hotel
under the patronage of Ansa McAl,” GABF President Nigel Hinds said in a release from the federation yesterday. The Mackeson ‘King of the Rim’ 3x3 Basketball Competition, which was launched last week, is set to bounce off on Sunday in A l b o u y s t o w n . To d a y ’s workshop will update officials and players on the FIBA rules governing this format of the sport.

The CAC Games has teams from Central America and the Caribbean competing and it has given Shabazz an opportunity to compare and gather information.“The Caribbean players are in some cases more athletic than the Latin American players but I would like to see us improve our first touch. This is a big highlight of the Central Americans teams and players, that good first touch and ability to play in tight situations.” Looking to the future Shabazz pointed out how important the current CAC Games tournament is for CONCACAF teams. “These players are going to form the next Olympic teams of the various countries in 2016
and the pool for the 2022 and even 2018 World Cups.” “It’s vital that we analyze what we are doing right here in CONCACAF, the emerging trends and what technical areas we need to strengthen as a Confederation,” he added. The recent FIFA World Cup in Brazil proved CONCACAF has become very competitive with countries like Costa Rica, USA and Mexico doing very well. Asked his views of Guyana rising again in regional football, the former Golden Jaguars boss stated, “FIFA has made a huge step in bringing in the Normalization Committee. It is a very well put together group and once they
can get the warring factions to work together then the football will benefit. “But the stakeholders in the football must cooperate with the NC and put football first. The daggers of hatred, deceit and treachery towards one another must be thrown into the Essequibo river.” Using his normal philosophical tone Shabazz pointed the need for the Guyana football fraternity to adopt a new alphabet. “In Guyana football it isAfor apple, B for bat and C for yourself. We have got to make it A for apple, B for all and C for each other. Every time Guyana came together and C for each other in football you achieved success,” he advised.
