Legislators, studying measures that will allow new operators to enter the local telecommunications market, have vowed to make critical changes before new proposed changes are voted on.

This is following shocking revelations over the weekend that Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Licences will be handed to four companies, three of which share close ties to former President Bharrat Jagdeo.

The three companies, Quark Communications Inc., Global Technology's iNet Communications and ENetworks armed with such a licence would be able to compete directly with Digicel and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), once the laws are passed in the National Assembly and assented to by President Donald Ramotar.

More glaring is that the three companies would have been rapidly expanding their distribution network knowing that the proposed changes in the law mandates that they would be given a licence while others interested in the market would have been restricted.

Following complaints that telecoms players were kept in the dark about the proposed licences, Kaieteur News in its investigations and subsequent exposure over the past few weeks

made some startling revelations.

Registration documents filed with Government found that all three companies were filled with shareholders who have known ties with Jagdeo with at least one person being directly related.

Wi t h G o v e r n m e n t unveiling an aggressive project to connect 90,000 poor families with internet, any company receiving a telecoms licence will be poised to capitalize also on the mobile phone market, an area that is jealously guarded by the current companies and worth billions of dollars.

Recently, after several

months in limbo in the National Assembly amidst ongoing negotiations with both GT&T and Digicel, Government re-tabled legislations to break the former's 20 year-old monopoly on landline and international calls.

The Opposition, however, sent the proposed changes to the law to a Special Parliamentary Select Committee saying that it wanted to study it further.

Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan, yesterday told this publication that his party, which controls seven of the 65 seats in the National Assembly, had

found it strange that Government had decided upfront who are the four companies that will be receiving licences.

“A telecoms licence is not a joke that is handed willy-nilly to anyone…We are supposed to have an open, transparent system allowing everyone to have a chance to compete.”

Ramjattan said that “to decide beforehand who you want to operate in the market is indeed strange and worrying…We can draw some conclusions from this…We will move to make some changes to change this criminal nonsense.”

EDITORIAL

The anti-money laundering sanctions may begin Yesterday was the deadline for the introduction of the anti-money laundering Bill. The various countries met in the Bahamas yesterday to decide on the way forward for the non-compliant countries, of which Guyana is one.

Guyana’s Attorney General Anil Nandlall is in the Bahamas and were he to act on the instructions from President Donald Ramotar, he would have been begging for an extension of the deadline. Of course, Guyana should have enacted the legislation since August 6. That did not happen but there were two other deadline dates. Guyana honoured none of them.

Lest the nation get the impression that the sanctions for non-compliance are now kicking in, people must realize that there were already certain measures in place to force Guyana to comply. For example in Guyana although the introduction of this feature was gradual and unnoticed, every client in a commercial bank must produce some form of identification to either deposit or to withdraw money.

No one is quite certain about the kinds of sanctions that would be applied to Guyana. Over the weekend, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh was at pains to explain that at the end of the forum in the Bahamas the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force would issue its findings against all those countries that have been found to be non-compliant.

Having done that, the countries would adopt their independent measures in their dealings with Guyana. Some may opt to pay increased attention from money coming out of Guyana and even money flowing into Guyana from within their coffers.

Guyanese importers may find that they would have to do additional paperwork to satisfy queries coming from the foreign bank that is requested to handle the transactions. In some cases the foreign banks and other financial institutions may conclude that the additional cost of the examination is not worth it and may opt to cease doing business with Guyana altogether.

Therein lies the problem that people do not want to address. With a population of less than a million souls the volume of business with the international is comparatively small. Things are such that many commercial institutions can ignore Guyana and suffer little or no effect on their business.

But this need not have happened and Guyana is now scrambling to repair any damage that may have been created. The view in some quarters is that Guyanese are not known to support terrorism so the government was in no hurry to see the legislation through. On the other hand the government was aware that Guyanese are people who access money from outside the traditional economic sources and that one day people would focus on this country.

For a very long time countries in Europe and North America have identified Guyana as a transshipment point for Drugs leaving South America. In some cases the money is left outside to facilitate the payment for imports. This is at least one of the cases of money laundering that the world is trying to stamp out. The major powers believe that the drug trade could be hurt if the money gleaned from the industry could be frozen and could become meaningless to the drug dealer. And indeed large sums have been seized from different corners of the world and now lie in some bond, but the flow of drugs is so great that the seizures barely make a ripple.

In the case of Guyana, if the money is seized or frozen the dealers are nowhere so rich so in the end something serious happens. Many of the killings in Guyana have been blamed on drug deals where the dealer has been forced to suffer loss. The developed countries know this.

Now that sanctions are threatened we are sure that we would see fewer bank transactions and more movement of cash in suitcases. But that apart, legitimate traders and importers stand to suffer. That is why the wider Guyanese community is blaming the government for being tardy over a three-year period when it had the proposed legislation languishing in some chambers.

Linden Town Council is more than capable of producing proper budgets DEAR EDITOR, I have seen that Minister Whittaker was trying to disparage the Linden Town Council for non-submission of budget for 2014.

This is unfortunate because despite the quality of personnel handed to the council by the Ministry, the council is more than capable of producing proper budgets.

The council’s administration has also been assisted by a concerned citizen, but we made it clear that we are not going to accommodate the charade because you cannot chop in one fell swoop, over 36% of the council’s revenue, and expect that it will produce a budget of substance.

So, I say pellucidly that the budget crafted (just read) with the help provided, will not achieve 50% of its mandate. The ministry is also habitual in instructing from Georgetown, so what is the Minister lamenting on. My council can produce a budget

in 24 hours. That is ‘joke business’, but the officers who have to execute must understand the process and work closely with it, failing which the budget will be seen as one emanating from the council and they are not in tune with its activation.

It is claimed that some officers did not help. Do you want to jeopardize their existence and expect them to be gleeful in getting things done? The Minister also forgot that the Treasurer was fired in September 2013 and it took sometime before an acting Treasurer was put in place in October 2013.

I called the young man to a meeting and expressed the need to focus on his budget for 2014.

The first thing he has to do is get the income and expenditure reports updated to September 2013 and I will work in establishing his cash book. The clerk dealing with expenditure was summoned, but the clerk dealing with

compiling revenue was on leave. The decision was to get her out to complete this assignment for a day and the rest will be done. She was not contacted and no one pursued the issue.

Councillors have a right to reject the actions of the Minister and refuse to participate in the façade.

A summary of the budget for 2014 was given to me, which I will pass to the Finance Chairman for her to circulate and call a meeting soonest.

It is the first time any thing came to us. So his comment about rejection of the budget by councillors is erroneous, facetious and meant to discredit.

The comment of interest in the toll booth is bordering on infantilism and is disrespectful, because my councillors do not collect any money of the council.

That is the administration’s work. All collections are done by workers and not councillors. We have been

civil and upfront with this Minister, but his insinuation is clear that this deranged management culture is ubiquitous in the corridors of power.

The minister is a victim of his own machinations and so cannot now complain as the person chosen to execute the government’s programme.

If the government was as serious as is indicated, by now it would have made a clear statement on the shortfall of the budget 2013 which was created by his decision. But more fundamental they have been pointing to the amount of money owed by residents.

That process, I have pointed out ad infinitum, will not result in major changes in fortunes of the municipality because of the protracted nature of the legal system.

My fear is also that politics will be played with the issue and the matters will lag interminably. In most instances you are not going (Continued on page 7)

Someone is a fraud, I wonder who?

DEAR EDITOR, The adage, never put a boy to do a man’s job comes to mind. In the same breath, I say, do not put a doctor to do law enforcement.

Mister Mark Devonish spouted a lot of drivel about the UK and accountability (KN November 17, 2013).

The brave members of the Guyana Police Force, also those who made the ultimate sacrifice and other competent public-spirited citizenry that were there, did so unselfishly.

No one ordered us to go into the kill zone. We were there to prevent a deranged person from taking more innocent lives.

Should we have gone home or to the Police Quarter Master Stores to get protective vests? Should we have advised an unhinged Mr. Kanhai to remain where he was and do nothing until we return with bulletproof vests?

For your information, Mr. Devonish, bulletresistant vests are recommended to be only used for five years. Having on some of those timeexpired items would be giving the person wearing the vest a false sense of security which would be very fatalistic.

I know absolutely well, what a warhead would do entering my epidermis. That

thought came after Mr. Kanhai’s killing spree was stopped permanently.

Do not attack the C o m m a n d e r, h e w a s directing his subordinates in an effective way, he was in the kill zone instructing his officers! If one cannot stand the heat, they should stay out of the kitchen!

Dr Devonish mentioned my name 11 times in his missive; I do hope any future mention of my name does not have physiological hallucinations on his well-being.

S.W.A.T is needed in Guyana, but it will be an

uphill battle. For the Government cannot do so without support for the Firearm Amendment Bill, coupled with cuts the combined opposition has inflicted.

By the way, I am deemed to be a real security specialist (not acting) and decided to do a Google check on you because your first two puerile analogies were so ridiculous! Strange, I did not see your name listed.

Whatever happened to that March 14 motion?

DEAR EDITOR, Although I first read it in the online Demerara Waves, it was surely headline news in all the newspapers at home.

I refer to March 14, 2013, when the National Assembly accepted MP Ms. Volda Lawrence’s motion, with amendments, and gave the country an all-party resolution and the hope that Georgetown would be cleaned up. I got the impression that the government side had put its ideas into the motion by successfully amending it.

Simple readers like me

saw the motion as a consensus motion, and also as a response to the protests that had been mounted by a non-party citizens’ group, as recognition of years of public disgust and as an awakening to a public health duty. The protest had resulted in the arrest of two popular figures, Benschop and Kissoon.

The motion also required reports from time to time by those executing the will of the National Assembly, the people’s representatives.

Yet, between March 14, 2013 and Sunday, November 10, comments on the insanitary

state of the city have been appearing and still I see no reference to the motion of March 14, 2013, with no progress report on the execution of the will the National Assembly. What happened?

Since March 2013, we have had in the city many public celebrations like the Independence anniversary, August 1st and Diwali.

I am tempted to make comments, but will await an explanation from any competent source rather than rush to conclusions.

Cricketers should emulate Sachin and Shiv DEAR EDITOR, Every cricketer should look up to the two senior batsmen, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Sachin Tendulkar, who played in milestone tests – 150th for Shiv and 200th for Sachin – their last as competitors and the last for both in India.

These two legends show sports personalities how to be great as well as simple and humble all at once; I recall Shiv lining up like others, as I did, for his passport some years ago and saying hello to so many people in line.

Few work harder than the two maestros at perfecting their trademark batting. And the whole of Bollywood (all the big name Indian movie stars) and politicians from around the country were on hand to see the master Sachin bat one last time.

They also admired Shiv.

The Indian diaspora was glued to the TV screen.

Friends in Trinidad, Guyana, Florida, Toronto and NY told me they and others were fixated on Sachin’s batting, hoping he would score 100.

Ditto Shiv!

Looking at their ages – 38 and 40 respectively – and the way they bat, one would

think Sachin and Shiv are still youngsters with more years to offer their teams. They get better with age. One can’t help but to admire both players for their personal habits and lifestyles.

Few cricketers have shown the humility, simplicity and work ethic as them and fewer have their organized lifestyle. They are not socialites visiting rum bars or womanizing as many cricketers do; they take their cricket seriously and take advantage of every opportunity to be in the nets, not worried about the hot sun like several West Indian players.

These guys sparked light in early appearances and stayed on for a long time, producing along the way.

That’s why they are so special to fans. Everywhere around the globe people tuned in to watch the two greats bat, and they did not disappoint. In North America and the Caribbean, people stayed awake all night just to watch the live coverage. And in India, the country was at a standstill as Sachin batted cheering every run scored.

This is what a correspondent wrote: “He went for his shots as each and

every stroke - attack or defence - was lustily cheered by a vociferous crowd”.

In India, as also in New York and I am sure elsewhere, it was common for people to constantly inquire about his score and heave a sigh of relief after knowing he was still batting. They also wanted to know about Shiv if he would give them another ton in his final India test appearance.

At the Wankhede Stadium, which I had the good fortune to visit during frequent trips to Mumbai, it was vintage Sachin Tendulkar in his final innings as he batted with deep concentration scoring a chanceless 74, before he was done in by a turning ball from Guyanese all-rounder Narsingh Deonarine.

Narsingh got one to bounce that extra bit as Sachin tried a cut shot which was unwise, a lapse in concentration, ending up in Sammy’s hands in the first slip. It was an end of a career.

Deonarine’s name will certainly feature in the record books for years to come.

Sachin laced the ball all over the ground at Wankhede, showing

youngsters how to bat in test matches. He did not slug and pull as West Indians are in the habit of doing even when they are under pressure and need to save a match. As one commentator noted, “it was pure unbridled joy for all those who witnessed a ‘Vintage Tendulkar’ on display”.

Continuing, with comments, “Tendulkar’s late cut off Shane Shillingford, a backfoot punch through the covers off Tino Best and the drive past Best that brought up his half-century were pure class. It was Tendulkar’s 68th Test half-century that came in 91 deliveries. Best, who first tried to unsettle Tendulkar with bouncers and then with verbal volleys surrendered in the end as he had hands on his knees at the end of one of his overs. It was Tendulkar who gave him a friendly pat on the shoulders probably to remind “who’s the boss today”. He earned Best’s respect.

West Indians should take a lesson from Tendulkar as that is the way one should bat in a test match.

This was also a historic match for ‘Chanders’ as it was also his final test in India and the last one in which he

appears together with Sachin.

While Shiv did not do well in the first innings and he did not receive the cheers and adulation of Sachin, he also made a classy 25.

He batted with grace in the first test scoring 67 overall in both innings though he lost partners to turn his 31 into a bigger innings in his final appearance at Eden Garden in Kolkata.

For Sachin, as others noted, 74 is not 100, but it felt like it was. It was a great final innings. It was not too long ago, critics were saying that the master was a shadow of his past and it was time to hang up his bat.

That was not evident last Thursday evening and Friday morning. Every time critics said he was in decline, he

bounced back (remember the 200 against South Africa in the one-dayer?).

As one commentator noted, the hallmark of Tendulkar’s innings was his footwork, leaving a lot of fuller deliveries outside the off-stump and getting the body behind the ball while executing masterful drives like those seen in his younger days.

Thanks Sachin. You did not disappoint! Take a bow, Master! Shiv did not shine but still did well with 133 runs in the two tests.

Road death toll climbs to 99 Dead: Percival Chester

Dead: Tiana Holder The deaths of 29-year-old Crown Cabs driver, Percival Chester and his female colleague who were killed in Sunday night’s smash-up on Mandela Avenue, have taken the toll for road deaths to 99 for the year, including five for last weekend alone.

Chester of D’Urban Street, and 19-year-old Tiana Holder of Bent Street were pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) around 23:30hrs Sunday night, minutes after Chester lost control of his vehicle causing it to topple a few times before turning turtle in front of Rubis Gas Station on Mandela Avenue.

Twenty nine year-old Yolanda Ghent was identified as the third person in the vehicle. She was discharged from GPHC with minor injuries yesterday morning.

According to reports reaching this publication,

Chester and the two young women were heading south on Mandela Avenue after leaving the wake of Vanessa Holder, the slain Crown Cabs dispatcher, when Chester swerved from hitting a mini bus and ended up toppling several times.

Eyewitness, Steven Thompson told Kaieteur News that he had just gotten into his vehicle which was parked in front of the gas station when he heard a loud noise.

“When I hear the noise, I look and see this vehicle coming towards my direction.

All I could have done was lower myself in the car and the yellow car hit my car and it spin,” Thompson said.

Yesterday, at the GPHC mortuary, Holder’s mother, Sharon told this newspaper that her daughter left home around 17:00hrs on Sunday to go to church.

“She said that she was

going to church and after that she would have gone to the wake,” the older Holder stressed.

In tears, she added that she was told that the driver of the car was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, Chester’s wife, Rehana told this newspaper that her husband picked her up from a relative’s home around 22:30hrs on Sunday and took her home.

He promised to return within an hour.

“He said that he was going to Vanessa’s wake and that he will come back within an hour,” the wife said, adding that her husband had asked her to give him a wakeup call at 06:00am the following morning (Monday).

There were five deaths over the weekend.

Two men, Hasib Bulla and Juman Ally were killed early Sunday after a speeding car slammed into them at Meten Meer Zorg and Bimchan Ramphal died on Saturday after he was struck by an alleged speeding and drunk driver on the Public Road at NO. 19 Village, Corentyne.

Tourism Awareness Month 2013….

Restaurant Survey on quality, services, cleanliness being carried out The Guyana Tourism Authority will be observing “Restaurant Week” as part of Celebrating Tourism Awareness Month. It is conducting a Restaurant Survey on the public perception on quality, services and cleanliness of restaurants in Georgetown.

This week has been designated as Restaurant Week and a series of activities have been planned to highlight the importance of food safety.

One of the feature activities was an Operations Awareness Talk for restaurants; this was facilitated by Ms. Abiola Baker from the Public Health Department of the Mayor and City Council yesterday, at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC).

The Guyana Tourism Authority will target 54 restaurants (fast food, fine dining and casual dining) for the mystery shop survey;

this will be undertaken by the public at various restaurants in and around Georgetown.

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority are celebrating the 19th year of observing Tourism Awareness Month (TAM), in November, and have executed a series of educational and entertaining activities over the past two weeks.

The month-long calendar of activities, rolled out under the theme ‘Communication and Information Sharing for Tourism Development’ kicked off with the grand launch on October 31 when all of the sector players gathered to usher in this period that will see programmes and projects being facilitated to highlight the growing importance and significance of tourism in the country.

The Bartender Cocktail competition did not fail to

wow spectators and participants gathered at Hotel Tower on November 8. The winner was Julian Walton representing Spice Garden, who captured the first prize of a trophy donated by Wilderness Explorers and a trip to Caribbean Destination compliments of Demerara Distillers Limited.

Taking him to the pinnacle were his cocktails “Flora and Fauna and Kiss the Rainbow”.

The second place was awarded to Devon Ramlakhan from Edge with his cocktails “By the Creek and Green House Effect” his trophy was donated by Roraima Group of Companies. He also won a refrigerator, compliments of Courts Guyana Limited.

LINDEN TOWN COUNCIL IS MORE THAN...

What I want the Minister to answer to the nation, and many persons would have seen me raising this matter but not fully understanding what I am talking about, is the following: For the past five years we have been plugging the increase of properties to be included on our tax roll. It was resisted for years. Anna Regina and Linden were the two municipalities that were bold enough to increase taxes but these were rejected since 2006. Linden then decided to move to include the missing properties on the roll by hiring a private valuator.

We were written and told that it was not possible to use

the route we chose. Undeterred, our efforts were not successful for all sorts of reasons until 2013, when to his credit, Minister Whittaker was able to get the process going. The Valuation officers have been operating for the past six months and have produced less than 300 properties for the roll.

The men were travelling to Linden daily to do valua-

tions. The council had arranged accommodation, meals and transportation along with supporting staff.

This was rejected by the Ministry of Finance for daily travels. By the time they get to Linden with the traffic woes on the East Bank it is time to head back to base.

The bombshell was that the new properties, worth ten times the value of those con-

structed 40-50 years ago, were valued lower.

How was this? We found out that the men were valuing at 1976 and not even the 2006 level at which government had rebased its GDP. I wondered and came up with the position that we are all victims of the government’s devious devices. Many high rises are in Georgetown mainly, but other new build-

ings are all over Guyana and these will attract huge taxes if valued at current day prices.

This will be too much money in the hands of the councils of Georgetown, Linden and other local organs, including those controlled by the PPP. The independence these organs will now have to execute their programmes would mean they have less dependence on the central ministry. No one will

have to go cap-in-hand begging. We must reject this perniciousness and ensure that local organs have the level of independence to survive rather than depend on handouts from the ‘good boys’.

I await the Minister’s response because I have a mouthful, but my councillors would want me to stick to the case at hand.

Single mother of six remanded for possession of narcotics A single-mother of six who was recently apprehended on her virgin trip to the United States of America (US) for the possession of 2.938kgs of cocaine in her suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, yesterday made her first court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Thirty- two year-old Shellon Kanhai pleaded not guilty to Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking and was subsequently placed on remand by Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Special Prosecutor attached to the Customs Anti Narcotics Branch (CANU) Oswald Massiah who briefed the court, stated that on November 16 last, Kanhai was an outgoing passenger on Caribbean Airlines Flight BW524 en route to the US with one suitcase.

Massiah said that while at CJIA, whilst scanning Kanhai’s luggage a strange object concealed therein was noticed which resulted in a

CANU officer inspecting it.

The Prosecutor stated that when questioned by the CANU officer, the defendant admitted that the suitcase was hers . The officer then punctured the suitcase revealing traces of the illicit substance.

According to Messiah, the woman admitted to packing the suitcase alone.

The court heard that when Kanhai was being escorted to CANU’s headquarters for further analytical examination and report, she beseeched the officer for a chance, stating she has six minor children.

Messiah stated that an indepth check was conducted; which revealed the substance to be cocaine which was then weighed .

According to Messiah, the woman claimed to have received the suitcase two months ago from someone who knew she had received her visa to the US four months before.

He said that the woman also claimed to be a small business owner, but when

officers visited her lot 5 Railway Line, Industry home, there was no evidence to support her claim.

In the prosecution’s objection to bail, the woman was described as a flight risk and it was noted that if granted pre-trial liberty, she may not return to face charges.

Magistrate McGusty then highlighted that no special reasons was advanced by the unrepresented woman for bail and Kanhai in tears responded “Your worship I am a single parent with six children. The youngest is five and the oldest 13 and I am the only bread winner for my family.”

The Magistrate informed the court that special reasons have to be related to the offence and not the offender “My hands are tied. You’ve offered no special reason for the offence. I cannot grant you bail.”

The matter will be heard again in the courtroom of the Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine – Beharry on November 27.

Banks DIH employee remanded for robbery under arms Nelson Pratt, 26, of 287 Beverly Close Street, South Ruimveldt, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he faced an indictable Robbery Under Arms charge.

It is alleged that on November 16, at South Ruimveldt, Pratt, in the company of others, armed with a gun, robbed Taharka Braithwaite of $47,000.

Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman told the court that at around 10:30hrs on the day in question, Braithwaite, a businessman, went into South Ruimveldt to search for a friend when he stopped at the residence of Bryan Boyce to inquire about the

said friend.

Blackman told the court that the accused along with four other men, one of whom was armed with a hand gun, then entered the yard and approached Braithwaite .

According to the prosecution, one of the suspects lashed the victim on his face with the gun while the accused pushed his hand in the man’s right side pocket, took the money and escaped.

Blackman said that the matter was reported and the victim identified Pratt, who was arrested and charged.

However, Braithwaite told the court that on the morning of the date in question, he went into the area to search for someone who stole his

cellular phone and asked the defendant for directions.

He said he was led into a yard where he was held at gunpoint and beaten about the body. Braithwaite told the court that in the process the chain he wore broke, and the men went into his pockets and relieved him of his cash.

Attorney at Law Paul Fung-a-Fat made an application for his client who he stated is a longstanding employee of Banks DIH, to be granted reasonable bail.

The prosecutor however objected on account of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence as well as the fact that he assaulted the man during the commission of the offence. Blackman also stated that Pratt is a flight-risk.

Magistrate McGusty remanded Pratt to prison and the matter will be called again on November 25 before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry.

Con Woman fleeces family of $52 Million A West Bank Demerara family is now at wits end as it pursues the possibility of reclaiming in excess of $52 Million that was conned from their pockets in less than three months.

The con-artist was identified as 37-year-old Sharon Lall who would normally be accompanied a young man whom she says is her cousin, identified only as Kevin. The woman, according to reports, repeatedly demanded large sums of cash from poultry vendor Marlene ‘Debbie’ Rambrijhaman under threats that harm will come to members of her family.

Kaieteur News understands that the ordeal began during the closing week of June and continued

until September with Rambrijhaman emptying her bank accounts by frequently withdrawing large sums of cash, often in six and seven digits, then handing the monies over to the con woman.

She even handed over millions of dollars that were kept at home along with a large quantity of jewellery after her accounts went dry.

It is believed that Lall used the money to purchase several properties scattered across West Bank Demerara at locations like Crane, La Parfaite Harmonie, Coghlan Dam, La Grange and in Vreeden-Hoop. However, her location is unknown.

“There is where she start to threaten me. She tell me if is so I behaving for $120,000 and she will know what to do with me. She told me that it will cost me millions. She said that she will kidnap my husband, kill him and kidnap my daughter,” the stricken woman said.

The threat against her daughter, Rambrijhaman said, sent her running to the nearby Nursery School where she met up with the con woman and the young man in a car, reaffirming her belief that one day the woman will make good on her threats.

14-year-old among four rescued from prostitution

By Abena Rockcliffe The Guyana Women Miners Organization (GWMO) on Sunday rescued four young girls who were, according to reports, involuntarily living a life of prostitution in the gold mining community of Mahdia.

As part of its sustained efforts to combat human trafficking in Guyana, the GWMO, headed by internationally recognized Simona Broomes, on Saturday, ventured down to Mahdia, Region 8 and on Sunday made the rescue.

The four teenagers’, aged 14 to 17 were rescued from different shops. Two of them are reportedly sixteen years of age, while one is fourteen and the other, seventeen.

This publication understands that they are from Regions 4, 3, 9 and 10.

Kaieteur News has learnt that the youngest of the four victims recounted that she initially traveled to Mahdia in search of a job but suffered severe beatings at the hands of the shop owner who employed her.

The teen told the GWMO

that she was then forced to seek employment at another shop where she found herself granting sexual favours to miners in exchange for cash.

Yesterday Broomes was still taken up with the matter and had little time to furnish Kaieteur News with further information but noted that members of the GWMO are working with the Human Services Ministry in rendering further assistance to the teenagers.

Broomes was honored by the United States (U.S) as one of its International Heroes in the fight against human trafficking. On June, 19 the U.S. issued its 2013 Report on Human Trafficking, which again criticized Guyana for allowing girls and foreign women to be forced into prostitution and for relying on child labour.

The report accused Guyana of not doing enough to protect victims or hold trafficking suspects accountable. It said traffickers are attracted to Guyana’s interior mining communities because there is limited state supervision. That’s where Broomes has stepped in, U.S.

officials say.

The Government of Guyana has been consistently critical of the U.S Human Trafficking Report and the picture it paints of Guyana.

Broomes recently began carrying a gun after she was assaulted during one of her trips earlier this year, and began organizing fund raisers to help accumulate money to pay for her trips after death threats forced her to close her mining equipment business about two months ago.

Overcrowding, trial delays contributed to prison riot Subsequent to rioting inmates setting fire to the eastern section of the Camp

Street, Georgetown Prison Sunday, there is a sense of unease outside the prison

walls. The result is that police ranks around the prisons have been increased.

Sources disclosed that one of the main contributory factors for the riot was the hostile actions of Senior Superintendent Gladwin Samuels, who recently was chosen to head the Georgetown Prisons. Inmates claim that they were being treated inhumanely, with disdain and were brutalized.

Late Sunday night members of the Joint Services were in a standoff with inmates at the Camp Street prison who are demanding the removal of the warden who was recently placed in charge of the facility.

The inmates reacted angrily and began banging the walls and screaming, “Every day is de same stinking food. De wardens dem locking down people in here and ain’t even want we family visit we fuh give we food.”

Their protest actions saw mostly inmates of various dormitories of the facility chanting slogans through barriers overlooking the prison’s perimeter walls, calling for Samuel’s removal.

In 2008, two prison superintendents, Kurt Corbin and Gladwin Samuels, were

accused of killing Edwin Niles.

The two were granted $500,000 bail by the Magistrate and were eventually discharged.

Niles, who was incarcerated on a marijuana possession charge, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on July 3, 2008 with a broken arm and second and third degree burns to his shoulders, back and buttocks.

He succumbed on July 11.

An autopsy revealed that he died from a clot in the lungs due to the burns about the back.

It is alleged that Niles was beaten and scalded with hot water while being interrogated at the Georgetown Prison in connection with ammunition on his person.

Reports reveal that the fire at the prisons, Sunday evening, began in a dormitory which houses convicted prisoners. Prisoners used lighters to set alight a mattress. At that time they were seen dumping and throwing objects through the barriers.

The Fire Service was called in to hose down that section of the building. This quelled the flames since fire fighters were not allowed

entry into the prison block or dormitory.

Police officers, clothed with riot gear were seen entering the prison in the early stage of the showdown.

Efforts to make contact yesterday with the prison officials at the headquarters proved futile and no information was forthcoming.

Not even a press release was issued to highlight the steps the authorities took to control a prison bursting at its seams.

Authorities have since beefed up security in and around the penitentiary as investigations commenced into the prisoners’ behaviour.

It is not the first time prisoners at the overcrowded Camp Street facility have set their mattresses on fire to call attention to administrative and other issues at the jail.

The prisoners say that over 300 of them are awaiting trial, adding that they are crammed into an overcrowded facility without proper food.

The inmates made it clear that they want a return of former Director of Prisons Dale Erskine who they said looked into their concerns whenever these were raised.

The grieving woman said that throughout the ordeal she had not uttered a word to anyone for fear the attackers would make good on their threat to kill her.

She said that on one occasion, after demanding two million dollars, the young man who normally accompanied Lall, pressed a gun to her waist.

It was with this justification that Rambrijhaman opted not to inform even her husband.

recounted that the victim’s husband became overly anxious about his wife’s strange behaviour. “He came to us and said he doesn’t know what is going on, like she is in depression. She is not her normal self.”

According to Rambrijhaman, it was only three weeks ago, after the con artist made off with the last set of money that she confided in her relatives and the matter was reported to the Leonora Police Station.

It is now the family’s hope that society, after reading about the ordeal, will assist the police in capturing the pair. It is believed that they are hiding in Suriname.

No Sub-Region should be seen as hospitable for drug and other illicit trafficking flows - US Ambassador

By Dale Andrews Guyana’s commitment to the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) is without question. This is the assertion of Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, during his feature address yesterday at the opening ceremony for the fourth meeting of the CBSI Commission which is being held at the Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal on the East Coast of Demerara.

According to the Prime Minister, Guyana’s commitment to the initiative is demonstrated by its acceptance of the offer to host the current meeting, despite the stringent economic circumstances under which the country is functioning, especially since Guyana last hosted a similar meeting in October 2011.

The current two-day meeting comes at a time when the region, amidst some stifling economic challenges, is grappling with growing criminal activities which is threatening to undermine its security, and is a precursor to the fourth annual Caribbean/US security cooperation dialogue which will be hosted in Washington, USA in another three weeks time.

In the words of United States Ambassador to Guyana Brent Hardt, the CBSI which was formally launched in May 2010 was conceived and developed as a shared security partnership among countries of Caricom, the Dominican Republic and the United States of America.

It was born out of the announcement by US President Barrack Obama at the fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago, a little over four years ago of an “investment in the shared safety and security of the citizens of the Caribbean Region.”

“These threats, with both internal and external origins, have been fueled by drug and other illicit trafficking that affects the safety of both Caribbean and United States of America.”

He noted that after three years of technical working group meetings and dialogue, the CBSI has evolved over the past four years as a genuine partnership among 14 nations, each bearing responsibility for ensuring progress towards a collective CBSI goals and objectives.

He pointed to other regional security partnerships in the hemisphere, such as the Merida and the Central America Regional Security Initiatives, which have had an impact on international crime and violence in their respective regions, resulting in an increase in illicit trafficking and crime in the rest of the Caribbean.

This he said “makes it vital that the CBSI succeed in achieving its goals so there is no sub-region seen as hospitable for drug and other illicit trafficking flows.”

According to the US diplomat, given its broad regional scope, it is also important to recognize that

the CBSI also provides a vehicle through which nations throughout the world with interests in the Caribbean can coordinate their regional activities with the CBSI partner nations to foster more efficient multilateral efforts.

“In this regard, we welcome the active engagement of our Canadian, British, European union, UK, Dutch, and other partners who are making valuable contributions to the region’s security,” Ambassador Hardt said.

He concluded his address by expressing the hope that at the conclusion of the meeting, all the participants will return home with a renewed commitment to the CBSI partnership and a renewed belief that “we can together enhance the safety and security of our citizens through our cooperation, creativity and perseverance.”

Stakeholders from several Caribbean member states and from a host of US government agencies are participating in the meeting.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hinds reminded the meeting that the Region is faced with significant crime and security challenges that require the collaborative efforts of all the regional authorities as well as international partners to

address them.

He highlighted some of the crime and security issues that continue to confront the Caribbean.

These include the increasing propensity of young people to be involved in crime and deviant behavior; the proliferation of firearms trafficking; the tendency of persons to engage in the use of violence to resolve their

differences; the rise in gun related crimes; the difficulties posed by the drug trade and its spinoff; cyber crimes, and more recently the use of the internet to traffic drugs; gang related violence and the proliferation of gangs in the Region as well as the challenges posed by human trafficking.

According to Prime Minister Hinds, these issues justify the conceptualization of the CBSI. “Guyana supports the roll out of the current CBSI projects, in that, the focus is holistic. The projects allow us to continue to build the capacities of our law enforcement agencies and at the same time a significant portion of the funding, under the initiative, is being used to deal with issues relating to youth,” he said.

The Prime Minister noted that this approach is realistic and appropriate.

He noted that it has reached a stage in today’s world where criminal networking has been taken to a level of sophistication that warrants appropriate law enforcement responses.

Therefore he said it is apt that one of the main objectives

of the CBSI is capacity building of institutions to effectively combat all forms of crimes.

“We in Guyana welcome the emphasis on training that is evident in the programmes under the CBSI.” PM Hinds declared.

The CBSI is built on four pillars, one of which is law enforcement information sharing under which firearms marking, stockpile management and the destruction of firearms, electronic tracing of firearms, cyber security training and capacity building and border security training are being looked at.

The other pillars are law enforcement cooperation and capacity building; crime prevention by focusing on youths at risk and maritime and aerial domain.

The Prime Minister, who was speaking in place of Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee who was noticeably absent from the ceremony due to illness, said that the Guyana government strongly believes that the programs under the CBSI have been properly conceptualized, and the outcomes of the implemented projects will benefit all.

The bigger picture paints a million words It was former President Bharrat Jagdeo who, last month at a Lusignan rally in celebration of twenty years of power, told the gathering that they must ignore the few potholes and few clogged drains in Guyana and look at the bigger picture. I thought of the big picture when I looked at the Kaieteur News front page on Sunday If you haven’t seen it, I suggest that you do. It takes the form of a diagram which outlines an interconnection of power and finance that is extremely frightening. It

portrays a story of a tragic nation that sinks deeper and deeper into an authoritarian chasm from which one day it will never be able to climb out of.

The diagram depicts the eventual shape of the media landscape in the coming months, given the shape of the share out of licences for radio, television, cable, internet and wireless services.

The interconnection with its incestuous base is so dangerous that if the opposition and civil society accept this, then it is pointless for the opposition to protest

any other governmental wrongdoing in this country.

Just before he demitted office, Mr. Jagdeo awarded five radio licenses to Telcor of Queenstown, a company in which Robert Persaud’s family members, one of whom is Jagdeo’s niece, are the major players. Five radio frequencies were granted to a company owned by Dr. Bobby Ramroop.

It would be recalled that when he was President, Mr. Jagdeo said that he left a Cabinet meeting when a concession was being awarded to Dr. Ramroop because he is a friend of Ramroop and felt that he should not be part of Cabinet decision on Ramroop. It can be concluded, then, by the analyst that the President gave the permit to a very close friend.

In what must be unprecedented in regional and South American politics, the president of a country gave his own party a licence for five radio frequencies while two independent media houses were denied their

request. At the same time, Mr. Jagdeo also allowed television and telecommunications licences to two companies.

This cements the politics of incestuousness as practised by Mr. Jagdeo and which continues under Mr. Ramotar. The recipient, Quark Communication Inc, has Mr. Winston Brassington, Mr. Brian Young and a niece of Mr. Jagdeo in its hierarchy.

The other company is ENetworks which has at the top of its apex, Mr. Vishok Persaud, the son of deceased PPP stalwart, Reepu Daman Persaud.

According to this newspaper, included in ENetworks leadership is insurance boss, Keith Evelyn and Rakesh Puri, heir of Continental Agencies.

A citizen in the know informed me that E-Networks at the moment is putting cables on GPL poles so it becomes easy for a customer of E-Networks to be hooked up. He said that he saw ENetworks employees putting up the cables on poles in Subyranville where he lives.

This writer is to make an inquiry to GPL. Has GPL rented out that facility to E-

It means, therefore, that this incestuous share-out can reach every part of Guyana.

He reiterated that Guyanese need to think outside of the box and mentioned that if a monument is not located at Jonestown, one should be erected. He opined that the area can be preserved and used as a tourism site to generate foreign exchange.

On November 18, 1978, 35-years ago, over 900 women, men and children lost their lives in a murder/suicide tragedy that ranks among the largest mass suicides in history.

he Bank of Guyana (BOG) is giving the approximately 2,400 account holders of the failed Globe Trust and Investments Company Limited a final opportunity to uplift their monies.

The uncollected funds would be handed over to the Ministry of Finance on March 2, 2014.

This is according to Dr. Gobin Gang a , D e p u t y Governor of the Bank of Guyana, who enlightened that the institution is exploring all avenues, including broadcast text messages via Digicel, to advise account holders of the new development.

Dr. Ganga said that the Bank is in possession of $34M in undistributed funds.

That amount has to be shared between 2,000 account holders who deposited under $100,000 and 400 account holders who deposited $100,000 and over.

The Bank has already distributed close to $34M

to account holders.

In fact, a tranche was distributed in December last year with many of the recipients disappointed with the meager sums received.

Globe Trust began operating in April 1991 and was licenced in 1999 to conduct depository financial business with authority to engage in Trust business.

However, in 2000 and again in 2001 a series of inspections by the BOG found the institution to be in breach of the Financial Institutions Act, and the BOG, with the intention to liquidate, seized the institution in September 2001.

In 2010, Chief Justice (ag), Ian Chang, made a ruling paving the way for payments to depositors to commence. Letters were distributed to over 3,000 depositors who had savings accounts with balances of $100,000 and less when the Bank of Guyana stepped in and took control back in 2001.

A relative of the dead man told Kaieteur News, yesterday, that the family is yet to hear anything from the police as it relates to the investigation. The relative said that a post mortem examination is expected to be conducted on Wednesday.

Meanwhile police sources yesterday told Kaieteur News that they are still “actively' investigating the matter. The source said they may have been able to ascertain the motive, which was very “petty”.

Kaieteur News was told that Benjamin and one brother had an earlier confrontation about a “plastic bag” which was thrown at his “sweets stand”.

A scuffle ensued between the two men. The source

explained that neighbours separated the two. Moments later, the source said that Benjamin was passing by another brother when he was stabbed. It is unclear whether the two had an exchange of words.

This newspaper was told that Benjamin lived opposite his alleged killers and that the men were once friends.

One relative of the dead man told Kaieteur News that the three men were friends.

This newspaper was told that Benjamin was stabbed to the region of his chest; he also had another wound to the head. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Benjamin's mother, Lorriane, told Kaieteur News that she had last seen her son on Sunday morning.

“He came by me and I made breakfast for he. I ain't know that would have been the last time I would have seen him.”

According to the woman, she received a call from a female who told her that Benjamin was stabbed.

Upon her arrival at the hospital her worst fears were confirmed.

He denied opening fire on the ranks. “I didn't know they were police until this morning (yesterday) when I saw it in the newspaper. After them shooting, I end up crashing into a post; all I know is that I run in somebody yard and then I took a taxi and went to the hospital.”

The wounded Mc Lean said that he was driving his friend's car and is not sure whether they robbed anyone before they picked him up.

Are there jobs for the 1,500 plus UG graduates?

M

ore than 1,300 p e r s o n s graduated from the University of Guyana (UG) Turkeyen Campus. And this weekend will see a few hundred more get their diplomas and degrees from the Berbice Campus.

But are there jobs in our economy today for the more than 1,500 university graduates that will be churned out this month by the nation's premier tertiary institution?

It is a known fact that hundreds of secondary school students who write the CXC Exams and gain numerous Grade Ones and Distinctions have a hard time finding jobs. Every year, the Government announces that the economy is growing, and newer businesses are being created.

But can the job market satisfy the hundreds of university graduates who spend their hard earned monies, time and skills studying for up to four years for their degrees?

Academic and former Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC), Professor Daizal R. Samad, believes that the jobs are there, but he questioned the suitability to the graduates.

Samad stated that the jobs reside in places like, “obviously the private sector, the government, the social public sector as well as in teaching.”

“What we find happening is that people graduating in things like Accountancy find themselves in classrooms teaching. You don't want to

be there, so we have implications of that. It's a difficult situation, which is why UG needs to look at what are the national needs and guide students towards degree programmes that will fulfill those needs.”

He believes this is the way to go.

The professor added, “We are churning out social workers, for instance, but whilst we are churning them out, there is a rise in domestic violence and child abuse and suicides, which will make us question the effectiveness of these graduates in doing the things they ought to be doing.

Where is soiled publishing research? Where is the data gathering?”

“It's a very complex business. Where we are failing is that we are not working in concert with each other—UG by itself, Ministry of Education by itself…We are not pulling it all together and see it as one national enterprise and until we do that we will be fragmented.”

Government Member of Parliament, Mr. Faizal M. Jaffarally, while congratulating the new graduates, stated that “It demonstrates that UG has been serving its purpose of providing higher education to the nation's youth.”

The Member of Parliament added that when one opens the newspaper on any given day, “you will recognize the tremendous vacancies for various skills…both at senior and junior management levels.”

What seems to be a problem, though, is that young people do not want to move from the

Parliament, Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya said that there will hardly be jobs for the 1,700 UG Graduates.

Dr. Ramayya opined that 99 per cent of high school graduates “are home.”

“Even some boys with good grades, are working in the estates,” he stated.

“The Marriot Hotel, the [Cheddi Jagan International] airport [project], [and] a lot of Chinese people [are] coming in and infiltrating our job industry.

A lot of questions can be asked… in Region Six in particular if there is any decentralization of power

with the Ministries…so there is no decentralization and this is taking away jobs from people in the country areas.” “[In] the teaching profession, we have unqualified people teaching.

We can't just discredit the government for anything.

Basically, government jobs are very limited and for those people who are not ' w i t h ' t h e government…show me a card and you will get a job.”

President of the Berbice Chambers of Commerce, Mr. Mark Roopnarine, said that there may not be new

openings for the new graduates, “but I'm sure that [with] the earnings that they acquire in University, some of them will go back to the jobs that they are in already and that's going to help them to build that organization that they are in and build their own capacity to function.”

“There are job openings available. There may not be what they [the graduates] expect, but graduates need to know that they have possessed already over 50 per cent of the ability to move up in any organization.”

CIA said to be collecting data on money transfers to the Caribbean

T

he Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been accused of secretly collecting bulk records of money transfers to the Caribbean and other places handled by companies like We s t e r n U n i o n a n d MoneyGram.

Government officials said the transfers include transactions into and out of the United States under the same law that the US National Security Agency (NSA) uses for its huge database of Americans' phone records.

The New York Times, quoting several current and former government officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter is classified, said the programme is authorised by provisions in the Patriot Act and overseen by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

“The intelligence community collects bulk data in a number of different ways under multiple authorities,” one intelligence official told the paper.

Dean Boyd, a spokesman for the CIA, declined to confirm whether such a programme exists, but said that the agency conducts lawful intelligence collection aimed at foreign “not domestic” activities and that it is subject to extensive oversight.

“The CIA protects the

nation and upholds the privacy rights of Americans by ensuring that its intelligence collection activities are focused on acquiring foreign intelligence and counterintelligence in accordance with US laws,” he said.

Juan Zarate, a White House and US Department of Treasury official under former President George W. Bush, said that unlike telecommunications information, there has generally been less sensitivity about the collection of financial data, in part because the government already collects information on large transactions under the Bank Secrecy Act. Luella Chavez D'Angelo, a spokeswoman for Western Union, which operates extensively in the Caribbean, declined to directly address questions about whether the company has been ordered to turn over records in bulk to the CIA or the surveillance court.

She, however, said the company complies with legal requirements to provide information.

“We collect consumer information to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act and other laws. In doing so, we also protect our consumers' privacy and work to prevent consumer fraud.”

MoneyGram issued a similar statement, saying “we value our customers'

privacy and work hard to protect it, just as we work hard to protect customers and others from fraud and other crime.

“We comply with the laws of all the countries where we do business, including the laws that govern privacy, government investigations, and compliance with lawful subpoenas and court orders.

“We have reporting obligations related to

suspicious transactions, money laundering and other financial crimes around the world. The laws to which we are subject generally prohibit us from discussing details,” the company said.

Intelligence officials here say the CIA programme is a result of terror financetracking programmes that were established in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

Kuru Kuru Cooperative College stretches its horizons While congratulations were in order for this year's graduating class of the Kuru Kuru Cooperative College (KKCC), there are plans by the Board of Directors to develop the institution's curricula. The aim is to extend its education delivery across the country's ten administrative regions.

The 30th batch of students graduated on Saturday at the College's main building in D'Urban Backlands Georgetown. The event saw the attendance of family members and well wishers, including officials from the school.

According to Chairman of the Board of Directors, John Seeram, the role of the 40-year-old institution remains to equip its students with the fundamentals that will allow them to develop skills necessary to contribute to the country's national development.

He said that the Board is embarking on a partnership with NCC Education in the United Kingdom, an internationally recognized provider of British education, to increase the courses offered at the tertiary level at the institution; in turn, increasing the number

KKCC's 10 outstanding students flank Chairman of the Board, John Seeram of students graduating from the college annually.

He said that the Board recently completed initial talks with the organisation which is gearing to offer undergraduate degree courses in the field of Business Studies and Information Technology. It will also offer the Diploma in Business at Levels Four and Five and Diploma in Computing and Business Information Technology also at Levels Four and Five.

The diplomas, he said, will be taught “face-to-face” by current staff of the College, using materials provided by NCC. Additionally, he said that online tutorials will be done to allow students to complete the courses. The plans are to be implemented during the coming year.

The Chairman, Mr Seeram, said that in the coming year, the College will be involved in conducting workshops and seminars on topics related to the work environment for working staff in the public, private and cooperative sectors.

“In effect, this is staff development training and is aimed at increasing their skills and knowledge respectively, hence to the benefit of the staff and the organisation. It will also embark on internship training of students so that their skills will be enhanced, allowing them to be in a more advantageous position when seeking employment,” he pronounced.

While the achievement of the goals remains at the forefront, Seeram said that the Board will be focusing its attention on areas where

improvement is needed. Of these he mentioned staff development, noting that the present lecturing staff and those to be hired will need to update their academic qualifications and skills, either at local institutions or overseas.

He added that there may be need to obtain lecturers from overseas to deliver lectures and to train staff locally.

Seeram encouraged that those interested “will need to come on board in making their contributions towards its [the College's] success by sending their employees for training.”He urged too that donors are approached to provide technical assistance to train overseas staff.

Administrator of the KKCC, Myrtle Richards, said that there are plans at the local level to integrate new courses into the current curricula. She noted that this plan was to have been implemented during the last academic year but due a “major setback” it was not possible.

Nevertheless, the plans would be implemented from the start of the New Year.

Richards said that through the collaboration with a number of independent agencies, the College will be taking on courses in the field of Business Management & Accounting, Project Planning & Preparation, Marketing and Adobe Photoshop, among others.

This year marks 40 years since the existence of the Kuru Kururu Cooperative College. Of 66 students who wrote the Caribbean Secondary Education Council (CSEC) exams, ten were awarded for outstanding performances.

There were 12 distinctions, 14 Grade One passes, 19 Grade Two passes, 18 Grade Three passes, two were grades Four and one student received a Grade Five.

Suriname team is Duck Curry Champion 2013

T

eam Subisco out of Suriname evolved the winner of Last Sunday’s clash of “the Past Champions,” Duck Curry Competition sponsored by King’s Jewelry World.

The event which has become a family tradition for Guyanese saw scores of people in attendance.

Team Suriname was announced the winner late last Sunday from among a string of local and international participating groups from Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Fourteen Guyanese and three Trinidadian teams took part in the annual cook off competition.

Some of the local participating groups include Ramlakan and Sons Rice Mills, Travel span Inc, Jamal’s Ultimate Curry Crew and Bombay M a s s a l a . Tr i n i d a d i a n teams included Trini Limas and T&T Jz Steak House.

Team Subisco walked away with the grand prize of $1.5 million.

G&P Jaigobin and Son Supermarket came in second place, while Jaikarran Duck

The winning team from Suriname.

Curry Crew placed third, Jamal’s Ultimate Curry Crew, fourth and Mike’s Haslington Crew, fifth.

Apart from those prizes, teams were also awarded for the best presentation and the best dressed/largest group. Team Suriname

captured the best presentation prize and G&P Jaigobin and Son Supermarket secured the best dressed/largest group prizes.

The competition commenced at 14:00h and the competitors were given

two hours to prepare their curries. The contestants were judged based on presentation, aroma, texture and taste of the food by a panel of ten judges.

The Chief sponsor of the event and proprietor King’s jewelry world, Looknauth

Persaud, said that the event has become a family tradition among Guyanese.

The event was also sponsored by eight other entities.

Scores of people came out in their numbers to support the 13th annual duck

curry competition.

Those in attendance of the cooking competition at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara last Sunday were greeted by the melodies of a live band and Tassa drummers.

Hundreds of Americans were killed in the Jim Jones massacre and every anniversary, for family, friends and loved ones of those who perished, Guyana

has been on the tip of their tongues. So much so, that c u r r e n t l y, c o n t r o v e r s y surrounds where the location of the Jonestown monument should be.

A report from the South Florida Times said on November 14 that this anniversary was expected to see two competing memorials at a site in the Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California, where

hundreds of the victims were buried after their bodies were repatriated to the United States.

Strong criticism came when Jim Jones' name was placed on a plague among the names of the 918 persons he killed.

One of Jones' adopted sons; Jim Jones Jr. is among those spearheading the event. But Rev. Dr. Jynona Norwood, a pastor of the

Miracles in Action Faith Center in Los Angeles, who lost 27 family members in Jonestown, including her mother says that, “putting Jim Jones' name on the memorial is like putting Adolph Hitler's name on a Holocaust memorial.�

Norwood who also heads the Guyana Tribute Foundation, Cherish the Wall Project has also been in discussions with

Evergreen officials to erect a memorial to the 400 or so children that died at Jonestown.

As he was in life, even in death, Jones' legacy remains one of controversy.

The incident that he instigated so many years ago is said to be the single greatest loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until that of September 11, 2001.

UG graduates first ‘Masters Distraught brother calls on police to investigate death of burnt sibling in Paediatrics’ batch

History was made at the University of Guyana Saturday evening when the institution for the first time graduated students undertaking the Masters of Medicine in Paediatrics.

The inaugural batch was made up of two doctors –Clive Bowman and Seepersaud Chatterdeo – who were conferred with their certification during the 47th Convocation ceremony held at the Turkeyen Campus.

The event saw the graduation of 1,376 students from the Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Schools of Education and Humanities, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education.

The ceremony was attended by many notable individuals, among them Dr Madan Rambaran.

He was eager to emphasise that the graduatio n o f t h e t w o doctors marks a significant achievement since their expertise will be added to the GPHC. The two are already senior doctors functioning at the public hospital.

Their achievements are expected to boost the delivery of paediatric care at the GPHC as it is expected to complement the work of the few doctors so qualified.

His sister, Indar Ramsoondar, said that she received a message from her niece, Nallo, that her brother had complained of feeling unwell earlier Saturday. He was discovered dead Sunday morning, after several calls for him went unanswered.

Ramsoondar added that her niece further told her that her brother had asked another relative to visit him urgently, the day before his demise, since he had complained of feeling unwell.

Ramsoondar worked as a truck driver and was separated from his wife many years ago. He has one adult daughter.

The programme, at its commencement, was regarded a giant leap in the health sector aimed at improving paediatric care. Moreover, it was noted that the public health sector is poised for much needed improvement.

Currently there are three other doctors undertaking the programme. They along with the two graduates were in fact products of the undergraduate programme offered at the local University.

At the launch of the Masters Programme they were all urged by former Dean of Health Sciences, Dr. Emanuel Cummings, to remain in Guyana after their training as according to him over the years, an average of 25-30 individuals graduated but the best of them often opt to migrate.

He nonetheless asserted that there are some, the likes of Dr. Chatterdeo, an outstanding graduate, who have shown sustained commitment to the local health sector over the years.

The University also for the first time on Saturday conferred the Masters of Medicine in Emergency Medicine, on Bux Zulfikar.

The brother of a 47-yearold miner who was burnt at Mowasie Landing almost four months ago is calling on police investigators to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident since according to him, the family knows that he police are in receipt of information to make an arrest.

Andre Britton, a 51-yearold Rural Constable living in Mahdia, Region Eight, believes that his younger brother, Calin Britton, was murdered by his common-law wife with whom he operated a mining camp in the Mazuruni area.

The man says that information indicates that the woman might know about the burning incident which subsequently caused the miner’s death.

Britton said that he was given different stories by his brother’s common-law wife and the stepson who is the woman’s son. He said that his understanding is that they were both in the immediate area where the man “deliberately” set himself afire. At least that is the story the stepson told him, the senior Britton said.

The common-law wife, he

said, reported that the younger Britton was trying to light a bush heap at the camp when he used gasoline instead of diesel and accidentally set himself on fire.

The older Britton understands that the couple had a disagreement that very day over female workers in the camp. He added that his brother’s common-law wife had instructed nurses at the Georgetown Hospital that no one was to visit her partner in her absence or without her permission.

Britton said that the dead man’s family had a difficult time at the hospital, since the nurses said they were instructed to take precaution with the persons visiting the victim. “Even the man’s daughter could not see him,” Britton said.

“She (common-law wife) called the girl and told her that whenever she going to the hospital she must know; she told the child she got to tell her.”

Britton provided cell phone numbers for two women who worked with the couple during the days leading up to the immolation.

The first female, a 19-year-old

from New Amsterdam Berbice told Kaieteur News that she went into the back dam and was hired by the named common-law wife to be a cleaner.

She said the woman was very friendly and had warned her about her husband who she said liked “young girls.”

The 19-year-old said that given the talk with the woman she was circumspect with the gentleman. She said at no time was the man “fresh or out of place” with her, until one night he came to her room where the number two female was also sleeping. She said the man tugged on her bed spread and then pulled her toe.

The young woman said the man made verbal advances to her and she rejected. After a few tries, she said the man went away, after telling her to tell no one about what happened.

The 19-year-old said she however told Britton’s wife and heard that there was a commotion. Before that, the teen said the wife insisted and urged that she go to the police to report that she had been raped by Britton, but the teen said she refused since the (continued on page 24)

Bajan man remanded for robbing Guyanese Knowledge by some persons in a St. Michael, Barbados, community that a Guyanese businessman, Mahendra Ramautar, kept money and valuables in his home led to him being robbed and to suffer a gunshot wound.

Now one of the thieves in that 2010 crime has confessed, and was on Friday remanded to the Barbados Her Majesty’s Prison, Dodds, awaiting a pre-sentencing report from social services agencies because he also admitted to being a drug addict.

According to media reports, the court heard that the repeat offender and selfconfessed burglar, Derrick Ward, got involved in the

robbery together with two other men after one of them said he “know a Guyanese man that is got gold”.

“He tell me he gun carry me to rob (Ramautar),” Ward related in a confession statement.

Court evidence indicated that the conversation between Ward and his accomplices occurred on the day after Ramautar had returned from work and hid his money behind a wardrobe. The bandits drove to Ramautar’s home in Eagle Hall, where, according to Ward, one of the men approached the door and “holler police, police”.

Ramautar said the bandits, who had forced their way into his house after he opened the

door to shouts of ‘police’, robbed him of $5,000 cash, one chain, five rings, five bracelets and a cell phone. In the process one of the men accompanying Ward shot Ramautar in the leg.

“He had a gun and he tell the man to pass the gold,” Ward continued. “The man give me the jewelry and I ran out the house and get in the car. Before I ran out I hear the gun went off”.

In their subsequent investigations, police held Ward, but his accomplices were never arrested.

Ward has seven previous convictions, one each for using indecent language, resisting arrest, assault, wounding and three for robbery.

Killer driver surrenders Almost two weeks after “Delli”, the Dartmouth man who drove his car HB4188 in a dangerous manner and struck down and killed 74year-old Narine Singh, surrendered to the police at Anna Regina Police Station, Sunday evening.

Delli had eluded the police but his abandoned car was recovered aback of a back dam at Dartmouth

Village.

Singh died before receiving medical attention after he was struck down on the Riverstown Public Road, in from of his yard on November 7, last.

Reports are that Singh, formerly of Riverstown, was walking with his bicycle to his resident when he was struck from behind. Delli was at the time proceeding in a northerly

direction on the Riverstown Public road. After Singh was hit and killed, the hire car driver sped away without failing to render any assistance.

Singh’s neck, arms, legs and back were broken. Singh was a priest assigned to the Airy Hall mandir.

Charges are likely to proceed “Delli’s detention shortly.

Accused in Black Bush Polder murder trial to know fate today The accused in the Black Bush Polder lover murder trial is expected to know his fate today when Justice Dawn Gregory sums up the evidence for the mixed jury sitting in the Berbice High Court.

On trial for murder is Satrohan Mannaru, called Andrew, 23, of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder who is on trial before Justice Gregory and the mixed jury in the Berbice High Court for murdering his ex-girlfriend Indranie “Cynthia” Basdeo, on Friday October 7, 2011.

The victim was 14 at the time. When the matter resumed on Monday both the defence and the prosecution closed their cases and presented their closing arguments to the judge and mixed jury.

The accused Satrohan Mannaru Defence attorney Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos who is appearing in

association with attorney at law, Pamela De Santos, argued in his presentation that the situation was as a result of an accident.

He beseeched the jury to believe the defence story that the injuries were due to an accident and citied inconsistencies in the prosecution case.

State Prosecutor, attorney at law Renita Singh concentrated on the presentation of the many witnesses. She told the jurors to believe the witnesses story.

She also asked them to look at the caution statement given by the accused.

She queried how could it be an accident and she received injuries on her hand, under her chin and breast.

She also mentioned the eye witnesses who saw the accused boring the deceased.

The accused had earlier given an unsworn statement in which he had stated that the deceased got ‘bored’ by accident.

In her opening address, attorney at law Singh had stated that on the day in question the girl had made arrangements with her sister and brother- in- law to attend school sports at the Mibicuri school ground.

While at the event, the relatives had stated that they noticed the accused grab the deceased.

It was during that time she allegedly got stabbed since shortly after they observed Mannaru with a knife in his hand and the deceased bleeding.

The girl was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Magistrates’ Court cashier on remand for stealing “child support money” A 23 year-old Georgetown Magistrates’ Court cashier who was on the run for over a year for allegedly stealing from the court’s Maintenance Department; was yesterday remanded by Magistrate Faith McGusty.

An Indictable Larceny by Clerk or Servant charge was read to Tiffany Peters which stated that during the period February 7, 2012 – September 11, 2012, in Georgetown, being employed as a clerk at the court, she stole $3,045,000, property of the State of Guyana.

According to Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman, Peters was employed as a cashier in the court’s maintenance section and her duties entailed writing up maintenance/affiliation cards and cash composition books, as well as collecting cash from persons paying monies.

Blackman told the court that during the period mentioned in the charge, Peters made changes to receipts and records and stole the aforementioned sum of cash from her employer.

He said that from the time

the offence occurred, the defendant went on the run and acting on information received, police set up a sting operation which eventually led to her arrest.

Prosecution objected to bail on account of the quantity of money involved and stated that, the fact that Peters was on the run for such a long time indicates that she is a flight risk who if granted bail, will not return to court.

Local capacity improved to test illegal medical drugs Guyana’s capacity to test for illegal medical drugs has been significantly boosted with strategic training support from Argentina. This move allowed for staffers of the Government Analyst Food and Drugs Department to be certified last Friday evening, having participated in a week-long medicine control project.

The project represents the third phase of a Caricom Project which saw Guyana being selected along with three other territories – Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago – to be beneficiaries.

According to Director of the Food and Drugs Department, Marlan Cole, the project was made possible by the Argentine Horizontal Corporation South/South and Triangular Corporation Fund (Fo.ar) and financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina.

Support was also forthcoming from the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

“If it is supposed to have 50 per cent active ingredients, it must have 50 per cent active ingredients and not only 30 or 20...” said Cole, who stressed that Guyana is now in a better position to address such challenges.

This in essence, Cole noted, will serve to regularise the pharmaceutical industry and facilitate trade in the process while safeguarding the health and wellbeing of consumers by ensuring that drugs of the requisite quality are available on the local market.

“This support therefore from the Argentine Government and PAHO is very timely and we can assure you that we will not stop here,

but we will seek ways and possibilities of enhancing our cooperation with the Argentine Government.”

Also speaking at the forum was Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shamdeo Persaud, who underscored that the project is a very innovative one for Guyana. He disclosed that for many years the local health sector has struggled with the issue of ensuring that the population is provided, through the public health care system, with good quality medication.

According to him, in the past there were some arrangements, through the local Food and Drug Department, which has had its fair share of challenges in terms of lab capacity, the availability of all of the essential supplies to conduct work, and sometimes even in the technical capacities. This is however expected to be a thing of the past, since

according to Dr Persaud, “this initiative has been able to bring to us, in a very consorted way, persons who can do these testings and deliver vital results to ensure our medicines are of a good quality.”

The second female, a 20 – year-old from Linden told Kaieteur News that she had been kicked out of the Mowasie camp by Britton’s wife who accused her of sleeping with all the men in the camp.

The young woman said she was hired as a cook and was also warned about the man’s supposed liking for young females. The girl said that the woman eventually got angry with her after a few weeks on the job claiming that she had slept with Britton, her son and all the male workers.

The teen said that without a word the woman walked into a room grabbed her by the throat and asked, ‘How long you sleeping with my

husband?” The teen said the woman refused to believe her and ordered that she leave the camp.

Britton, she said, told the wife to let the girls exchange task since the first female was hired to clean the shop. The teen said that she did not like the tension and decided that she was leaving the camp the next day after contacting her family.

She said that same day she heard that Britton had burnt himself.

The older Britton said his brother was brought from Mowasie Backdam to Mahdia Hospital and was later flown to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The man was burnt in early August and succumbed in late October.

Britton added that after his brother’s death, the common-law wife refused to have a post mortem examination conducted. He alleged that he had to get police officers to seize his brother’s body from the wife and that was how the post

mortem was done. Britton is even more convinced that his brother ’s death was no accident after seeing the injuries sustained.

He reported that his brother was burnt back and front, from the waist up. He claimed that had the man accidentally burnt himself while burning bush there is no way his back could have been burnt so badly. “Even if he threw it on himself, his back would not have burnt so badly,” the big brother lamented.

Before his death, Britton said, when he asked his brother how he got burnt he replied, “Don’t pressure me. I will feel good and then I go handle this.”

Britton said that the police are dragging their feet on the matter despite the information that was given. The two females said they were never contacted by the police, although they too believe that there is something “fishy” about Britton’s death.

New security unit in T&T from December 1 The Government’s Rapid Response crime-fighting initiative will be implemented from December 1, National Security Minister Gary Griffith announced Sunday.

Speaking after a community meeting with residents of Andalucia, Maraval, Griffith said the unit was one of several initiatives announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in August, after a joint meeting with Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley to address the escalating crime problem following a spate of killings in East Port-of-Spain.

Griffith said the unit will provide a 24-hour mobile presence in three to four areas during the pilot project, including the western peninsula (Diego Martin, Carenage), San Fernando and possibly Siparia.

He said 51 vehicles will patrol designated areas on a 24-hour basis. The vehicles will be equipped with GPS systems and will be monitored through the ministry’s operation centre to ensure they are where they are supposed to be at any given time.

When fully operational, the Rapid Response unit will

operate in 15 regions in T&T. The minister said the unit will act as a visible deterrent to criminals and will provide a sense of comfort to citizens.

Griffith said the ministry is considering the revamping of community policing.

He said his meetings with various residents’ groups evolved out of the plan to revamp community policing.

He has already met with residents of St Ann’s and Hololo to ascertain the threats in those areas and to “assist the communities in building a relationship with the police.”

He said he has been speaking with acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams about the matter but could not provide a definite timeline for the revamping to begin. Griffith said the National Training Police Academy is important because not every officer could be a community police officer. Some officers, he explained, have to be trained specifically in community policing so they would be able to build a relationships with residents in communities, which would lead to residents passing out information about crime.

He said purpose of the community police would be informational, while the Rapid Response would be operational. Griffith said in revamping community policing, more meetings will be held between residents and the police.

Asked if the revamping of community policing meant more foot patrols in designated areas, Griffith said the Rapid Response unit and aerial patrols using the four national security helicopters will be used to fight crime.

Griffith said he would insist that the helicopters be used for low aerial surveillance.

The minister said he hoped to visit as many communities as possible since crafting any crime plan should involve dialogue with residents. At Sunday’s meeting with the Andalucia residents, Griffith was accompanied by senior officers from the Maraval Police Station.

“I have been going to the ground, speaking to residents and sharing their concerns,” he said.

Griffith said he offered advice to the residents who are often seen as “soft targets” by criminals.

Dominican Republic moves to avert PetroCaribe suspension threat BASSETERRE, St Kitts (WINN) - The Dominican Republic has taken prompt action to avoid a threat of suspension from Venezuela’s PetroCaribe energy programme.

The prime minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves has written to the Venezuelan president asking him to suspend Santo Domingo from the programme.

Gonsalves also advocated that the Dominican Republic be

suspended from CARIFORUM, over the September 23 ruling by the country’s constitutional court that strips tens of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent of their citizenship.

Santo Domingo-based journalist Jean Michel Caroit says the threat of suspension from PetroCaribe being promoted by Gonsalves is being taken very seriously by the Dominican government.

Caroit told WINN FM’s The Bigger Picture that, last Wednesday, after the Gonsalves letter to Dominican President Danilo Medina was made public, the authorities in Santo Domingo announced that they were

sending a high level delegation to Caracas.

“That was a very quickly decided journey … and the purpose of the trip was to explain the position of the Dominican government in relation to the court decision,” Caroit said.

The constitutional court ruling has also been strongly denounced by former prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Lester Bird.

“It is so absolutely racist that it’s almost pathetic,” Bird told WINN FM, adding that Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer should make a statement on the Dominican Republic situation.

Lester Bird is promising that an election victory for the Antigua Labour Party would see a new Labour administration taking a very firm stand against the Dominican Republic.

Elections are expected in Antigua and Barbuda in the New Year. The former prime minister says Dominicans in Antigua who qualify for citizenship are given that status, and St John’s should warn Santo Domingo against abusing its own citizens by downgrading their status.

Former National Junior Chess Champion Anthony Drayton shrugged aside the loss of his National Junior Chess crown to Haifeng Su last month and registered 6 points to capture the top spot when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged the 2013 National Senior Chess Qualifiers at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue Sunday November 17 last.

The former junior chess king registered a major upset when he defeated former senior champion Wendell Meusa and though both players ended the tournament on 6 points apiece, it was Drayton who benefited from the tie break system to seal off the top spot.

The five other players to qualify for a shot at Khan’s title are junior players Davion Mars and Roberto Neto and senior players Errol Tiwari, Glenford Corlette and Neil Khan. These players will compete for Khan’s title later this month.

Foster resuscitates St. Francis All Season Racing Service are F&H Million Dollars dominoes champs Xavier RC Youth Club Mr. Hilbert Foster, CEO and Secretary of the popularly- known Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports (RHTY&SC) Club on the Corentyne, recently launched a set of plans to bring back life into the St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Youth Club (SFXRCYC).

Many would remember this vibrant Catholic group that was very active many years ago under his brother, Mr. Alex Foster. Hilbert Foster has recently become active again at St. Francis Xavier Church at Port Mourant, Corentyne and addressed the congregation last Sunday about his plans to bring back life into the club.

“We are trying to form back the SFXRCYC down here…and as you know, for the last thirty years, I have been at the RHTY&SC and that club has grown to become one of the best in the Caribbean,” he added.

Foster added that he believes the time has come “to give my services back to my church after being away for a long while…and the youth club will be up and running from this week.”

After the Sunday Mass for the 33RD Sunday in Ordinary Time on Sunday, November 17, 2013, the young people distributed snacks to every member as well.

The group also distributed four hampers to senior citizen members of the church and this initiative, he added, will take place on a monthly basis. ”It will be selected by the young people...and these are some of the items that the youths have planned for the rest of the year.”

A visit is also planned by the youth club to Ascension in New Amsterdam as well as distribution of toys to children in other parishes across Berbice, as the Christmas season nears.

St. Francis Xavier church, too, he added, will be starting a programme in December on Dave’s Television Channel 8 (DTV-8) in December, “…so the young people can express their faith via TV.” Some other things planned for next year include designing

He charged his team including Veronica, Pamela, Carol, Corrine, Melina Rankin and Joey to work hard as well as the other young people in St. Francis church to put their shoulders to the wheel and bring back the popular youth club.

Fr. Joachim de Mello SJ thanked Foster for returning to the church and for bringing back life into the SFXRCYC. “May God richly bless Mr. Foster and his youths as well as everyone in the now resuscitated St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Youth Club,” he expressed.

GKC breaks another World Record The Guyana Karate College during its end of year grading examinations that were held last Friday evening November 15, at its main dojo – Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas Lands, saw history being made with nine year old Tyler Orderson becoming the youngest person to achieve the second degree black belt ranking from all of the countries across the world under the International Karate Daigaku World Karate Organization.

Tyler Orderson, who had the accolade two years ago of becoming the youngest person globally at seven years old to earn the shodan (1st degree black belt) ranking, led the way with a gritty performance standing out even though suffering from a bad case of influenza.

Accompanying him for testing and successfully achieving the Nidan ranking was his fellow Marian Academy student Alyssa Persaud, who turned in a scintillating performance to also become a second Dan black belt.

Mickelly Rahaman, Rebecca and Rachael Ramlall, Rajiv Lee, Khalid Adams, Zane Low and Arvin Seelall all undertook a grueling examination to earn their shodan (black belt) rankings.

‘Nationals’ begin today Hussein wins Berbice with swimming competition table tennis title It was a repeat of last year’s final, but in the end, the result was the same. At the end of nonstop action at the second annual Berbice Table Tennis Championship held last Sunday at the Port Mourant Training School, Gibran ‘Gibby’ HusseinSafraz waltzed away with the Men’s Singles title for the second year.

Termed “the Berbice Table Tennis Championship” and sponsored by overseas based Guyanese, Berbician, Souvenir Ranmdyal, the tournament, which was organised by the Berbice Table Tennis SubAssociation and sanctioned by the Guyana Table Tennis Association, came off with a bang with over 70 players participating with players’ age ranging from 10 years to over 60 years.

Hussein-Safraz remained unconquered to defeat another top player, Rono Joseph in the Men’s Singles contest in Berbice.

After a hard fought day of Table Tennis action, Safraz and Joseph emerged as the last men standing.

However, Safraz stunned Joseph 11-4, 11-9, 11-8 to take the Souvenir Ramdyal trophy and cash incentive. Earlier in the semifinal, Safraz had to pull all the stops to beat Stephan Sankar (3-2) 11-3, 911,11-6,7-11 and 11-7, while Joseph had an easy time against national junior player Joshua Lalbachan 11-5, 11-6 and 11-6.

In the quarterfinal rounds Safraz had won from Kristaff Sookhoo 3-1, Joseph had beaten Marlon Daniels (3-1), Sankar had edged Richard Bacchus 3-2 while Lalbachan had beaten fellow national junior player Briton Murray (3-0). There was no third place playoff as both Sankar and Lalbachan were declared joint third place.

In the 18-and-under division, Sookhoo up his game to beat Lalbachan (3-2) the scores being 5-11, 11-8, 711, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9 to take the final. Sookhoo had earlier defeated Murray 3-0, while Lalbachan had beaten Sankar 3-2 in the semifinals.

Murray and Sankar were declared joint third place.

In the 15-and-under division, Sankar took top honours getting the better of Sookhoo (3-1) 11-8, 6-11, 116, 11-9. In the semifinals Sankar had defeated Joshua Butts 3-0, while Sookhoo had squeezed past Nicholas Lawrence 3-2. Lawrence and Butts were awarded joint third place.

Jadon Conway took top honours from Joshua Butts to win the 13-and-under division winning 3-1, winning 11-5, 10-12, 11-7 and 11-4.

Conway had won from Shariq Hussein 3-0 while Butts 3-0 in the semifinals.

The boys U-11 category saw Andrews defeating Rawlin Mangra (3-0) 11-2, 116, 11-6 to take that category.

On the distaff side former nine time national woman’s champion Desiree Lancaster rolled back the years to play unbeaten among the four females to take top honours with former Caribbean Junior doubles champion Petal Bennett-Denny copping second. Joint third place was awarded to Joylyn Conway and Angeli Persaud.

Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ starts next Tuesday The Georgetown Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition is set to commence next Tuesday with eight matches, at the Banks DIH Car Park, commencing from 18:00 hrs.

According to a member of the Organising Committee, 32 teams have been invited to

participate in the competition and teams’ representatives are being advised to pick their registration forms from Guinnes Bar on D’Urban Street.

Last year’s overall champions, Back Circle, which represented Guyana at the Caribbean Championship

in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, will once again look to defend their title against teams such as Leopold Street, teams from Tiger Bay, Albouystown, Charlestown, West Ruimveldt, East La Penitence, the Island and other areas within Georgetown.

The National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championship, will begin today at the Castellani Pool where the swimming competition will be held from 9am, while the athletics 10km Road Race and Cycle 40km Road Race are also scheduled.

The 10k Road Race will begin at 6am this morning at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary while the Cycle Road Race will commence at 10am at the Ocean View International Hotel on the Rupert Craig Highway.

Defending champions in the swimming competition, North Georgetown, District 11, has expressed confidence heading into today’s events.

The District believes that they will extend their dominance at the Homestretch Avenue pool.

Flooded with a host of national swimmers, District 11 has won the competition for the past five years. Their strongest challenge, however, could come from East Georgetown, District 12, or the Barticians, who has hopes of winning the overall title.

Team manager Mark Wills, revealed yesterday that the swimmers has been training hard as they understand the task ahead. He said they are “just rearing to go”. Wills identified some of the stars from his District that he hopes will wrest the 2013 title.

Among the swimmers are national swimmers Britney Van Lange, Hannibal Gaskin, Sarah King, Omani Dunn, Onika George, Jamina Sammagan, Accalia Khan and Dylan Nurse. Wills said that his team is very strong and will be difficult to overcome today.

However, the Bartica and

East Georgetown team could pose a serious threat.

Meanwhile, the day begins at 6am this morning with the distance athletes taking the road for the 10km Road Race at Eve Leary.

District 6 (Corentyne) are defending cycle champions while New Amsterdam will produce the likes of Marica Dick on the road today.

District 11 has won four of the last six Champion of Champions titles and like District 10 (Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani) has won the title 13 times overall.

Nationals 2013 will decide who breaks the deadlock among North Georgetown and Linden or who will surprise them and upset the apple cart. The battle for supremacy begins today.

Some field events will also be held at the YMCA and GTU fields today.

Demerara Harbor Bridge supports Chico K&S schools football tourney The Demerara Harbour Bridge yesterday presented sponsorship representing 500 tickets for one day of the Chico Kashif and Shanghai Secondary Schools football tournament to allow all School children to see games for free.

The Elite Next Generation Secondary School Tournament is scheduled for December 8, 2013 and concludes on January 1, 2014.

Handing over the sponsorship on behalf of the Demerara Harbour Bridge was Finance Officer Mr. Latchman Kumar, who presented the tickets to Mr Kashif Muhammad, Director of the Kashif & Shanghai Organization.

Mr. Kumar said they were proud to be associated with the tournament and in so doing are paying for 500 tickets for school children from the schools on the East Bank to attend the games free of cost. Mr. Mohamed thanked the management and staff for their contribution and said this will take the total number of days sponsored for children to 11 and they are excited to very soon be able to let the children know that the entire tournament will be free for all school children.

The two-day trial match was postponed from yesterday and today and according to a Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) executive, the match will now be a three-day affair.

select the Demerara team for next month’s Inter-County four-day Cricket tournament after the commencement of the first round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) Inter-County tournament was pushed back from this Thursday. It is understood that the competition will now be played from December 2.

Former West Indies opener Ryan Ramdass, who played his only Test in 2005 in Sri Lanka, has been added to the list of invitees. The right-hander has played 21 First-Class matches and enjoyed a wonderful 2005 season when Guyana had to play all of their matches away from home due to the flood that year.

H o w e v e r, w h e n h e returned from Sri Lanka he had string of low scores towards the end of 2005 and has not played for Guyana in eight years. At 30, he now gets a chance to resurrect his career.

The classy middle order batsman from the Island of Wakenaam has not played a Test since July 2011, but now fully recovered from a wrist injury sustained in the CPL and with just a single division one game since then, he will be looking to return to form in the trials and Inter-county tournament as he attempts to revive his International career.

Aurelius Barrus found the net for Georgetown American School early in the second half but Persaud returned to seal the issue minutes later. The two teams will again meet on Thursday for the return fixture.

London shot a gross 92, playing off a 28 handicap for a best net score of 64. Second place went to Avinash Persaud who shot an effortless gross 70, parring the course for a net 66.

Third place went to Robert Hanoman who scored 92 (24) net 68.

Persaud chose to take the net prize for second place so Jaipaul Seenanan was awarded the Best Gross Prize with a 75, winning on a countback from the 75 of Munaf Arjune who also won for Nearest to the Pin. Best lady was Christine Sukhram with a gross 80 (9) net 71.

CARIBBEAN’S BEST MOTOR RACERS HEADED TO GUYANA - LOCALS DETERMINED TO PROTECT HOME COURT

This is what Sunday could look like with the anticipated large turnout of motor racing fans at the South Dakota Circuit.

acers from J a m a i c a , Tr i n i d a d a n d T o b a g o , Barbados, the USA, Canada and Suriname will soon begin to arrive for the final leg of the increasingly popular Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) scheduled to be staged on Sunday, at the South Dakota Circuit.

With the Championship headed to Guyana, Jamaica leads the CMRC Class Two

championship on 136 points, followed by Guyana (71) and Barbados (39). Gregg won all three races in this class and is now on 75 points, with countryman Sebastian Rae in second place on 33 points.

In the bigger class, the CMRC Group 4, Doug Gore is also on 75 points. He is followed by Barbados’ Doug Maloney (48) and Jamaica’s George Bayley (28) in second and third positions, respectively. Gore’s effort

helped Jamaica assume the lead in that class on 170 points, with Barbados in second place on 56, and Guyana having 34 points.

Guyana will be depending on the likes of Kevin Jeffrey, Andrew King and the resurfaced Mark Vieira to take them over the line for the overall title, while Gore’s Audi TT has not lost since leaving the factory in Germany where major repairs were done last year and he will no doubt be

seeking to underline his superiority over his rivals.

The strong Guyana contingent is determined to protect home court and has made it clear that they will do just that against their regional counterparts come Sunday.

Both Vieira and Jeffrey insisted that they are not prepared to allow the foreign invasion to dominate them in front of the home fans and have been hard at work to ensure that speed and reliability are paramount to ensure

Darren Sammy, who scored 25 runs over four innings and bowled 21 wicketless overs in the series, continues to captain the side.

Mexico face New Zealand with one foot in World Cup finals (Reuters) - Pride dented and World Cup hopes in the balance, Mexico have coped with the ignominy of an intercontinental playoff and are all but assured of a spot at next year’s global soccer showpiece before they face New Zealand in the second leg tomorrow.

Playing in front of a large and colourful crowd at the Albion Cricket ground on Sunday, Fudadin took 4 wickets for 24 runs then returned with the bat to score an even half century.
