Airline cash bond increase Every now and again, a government in this country succeeds in getting something closer to what may be considered right, even by the harshest critics. Though too far apart, when these occasions come to light, it is time to say, and support, publicly through a word of appreciation for what should be done more frequently, what should become the norm. The announced increase in the airline cash bond required represents such a positive long-awaited development. There is no need to revisit today the many instances over the years when distressed and abandoned Guyanese passengers were left on their own, with no helping Big Brother to turn to, no influential state official available for even a listening, and none doing much other than to try to soothe and get rid of supplicants as quickly as was convenient. It was, still is for those with their war stories made vivid by memory, of the Guyanese traveler being taken advantage of by mainly unscrupulous and unskilled Guyanese fly-by-night aviation hustlers, while left on their own by an uninterested and uncaring Guyanese government. It was the now age-old story of Guyanese political sins, the cardinal one of dog eating dog, while the political masters feasted on the choice cuts provided to protect friends and cronies. Now, at long last, there is the comfort of some protection for the little guys, the individual traveler, sometimes cash strapped, spending hard-earned funds, to visit for an illness, a funeral, a religious commemoration, or something usually as personally and emotionally challenging. It should be observed that holidaying and partying are given short shrift, though they still count. For after all, a paying traveler-in advance, no less-is a still a bona fide traveler with legitimate rights. Those rights include the facilities to make alternative arrangements, with the covering funds available, and now held in reserve. That would be the newly increased amount that is a bit more realistic and is a start. Let the start become norm. It is a start because, at any specific time (especially the more favoured holidays of Mash and Christmas), there are thousands of Guyanese customers waiting on the date that they reserved for flying, and who have already paid the full price using some noncash facility. The travel dates of many such advance paying passengers, which is the longstanding norm, could be months away. Many things could surface, things that are wrong and startling, and which expose the passengers to loss: loss of money, loss of time that stands unmoving, loss of job security. For those who cannot absorb the substantial financial blow of close to a thousand US dollars, whose credit facilities may be maxed out, and who are unable to come up with quick, emergency cash, this could be the ultimate travel nightmare of being stranded, with no cash, and no one to turn to for timely, necessary help. So, when a carrier is unable to deliver on its obligations, the very least that should follow is some official protective mechanism that enables the stranded and strapped to be afforded the relief that could make a difference, with the uppermost being returning urgently to that all-important job. There is none of the customary 28-day sick leave provision long present in this country over there to provide temporary shelter, while the claims process and bureaucracy are expedited and overcome respectively. Thus, the recently announced cash bond represents a start, one in the right direction, which gives the future marooned the opportunity and channel to make other travel arrangements and keep moving. This has been sadly lacking for a long time here to the detriment and anger of many Guyanese, who found themselves on the losing end of dirty airline deals with newly discovered dishonorable counterparties. Those others, who have weeks or months before they actually fly, have a sufficient cushion of time and space to rearrange their affairs. This paper understands that there is a balance between welcoming legitimate airline operators, while safeguarding the interests of citizens, who have been burnt before and that the combined bonds of almost 94 million dollars, will only go so far, with some held for tax purposes. It is a start, with accompanying vigilance required.
Anti-working class Coalition must pay with interest DEAR EDITOR, APNU+AFC must ensure sugar workers are paid now and must ensure payments include interest. The Ministry of Labour must censure and fine the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) for violating the laws again. APNU+AFC choosing to sit idly on the sidelines is reckless and unfair, another total betrayal of sugar workers and their families and adds to its anti-working class credentials. Sugar workers are usually paid weekly, every Friday. Before they showed up at pay offices for their weekly wages this past week, GuySuCo posted messages that workers should not bother showing up because
the weekly wages, that workers earned and is their legal right, would not be available. There was no notice informing the workers when they would be paid. This is not the first time wages for workers have been delayed; it is now a habit for GuySuCo to delay wages that workers have already earned. Every time it has happened, (President) David Granger and APNU+AFC have been missing in action, choosing silence and preferring to be on the sidelines. In response to the outrage against non-payment of wages for poor workers, people whose families depend on these weekly wages, leaders of the PNCR
and AFC are insisting it is not their business. Volda Lawrence, the Chairperson of the PNCR, and Dominic Gaskin of the AFC made it clear- it is not APNU+AFC’s business. (President) David Granger has not said a word. Moses Nagamootoo is in “la la land”. Ramjattan simply wants to be the PM candidate. Noel Holder might not know anything about this matter because he has been AWOL for a long time now. (Minister of Finance Winston) Jordan is too busy threatening to fire 20,000 public servants. It is amazing how often these charlatans have distanced themselves from GuySuCo. Since when it is none of
APNU+AFC’s business? These are workers. APNU+AFC have an obligation to ensure that rights of workers, including being paid for their labour, are absolutely being honoured. Since 2015, they have completely and totally converted GuySuCo from a public corporation into a department of NICIL. When Granger and APNU+AFC closed four estates, they did not think the decision should have been GuySuCo’s decision. When they fired more than 7,000 sugar workers, they did not think this was GuySuCo’s business. When they insisted on a wage freeze since 2015, they did not leave that decision up to GuySuCo. When they arbitrarily appointed NICILSPU to literally boss over GuySuCo, APNU+AFC did Continued on page 6
Oil in Guyana. A blessing or a potential Curse? DEAR EDITOR, I have always held the position that the tremendous oil discovered in Guyana, though a potential blessing for the country and peoples of Guyana, can and possibly be a curse for us due to the overreaching hand of the American company, ExxonMobil, and our gross lack of experience in oil, period. I was not at all surprised to read in the Sunday’s edition of Kaieteur News, that they, ExxonMobil, showed their hand of absolute and total disdain and disrespect for us, as others, so-called third world countries, by handing out contracts to another entity without Government’s approval. This company has a history of this kind of welldocumented behaviour in other oil producing countries and when their disrespect runs into much stronger regulatory roadblocks than Guyana’s to their nefarious behaviours, they resort to the tried and true- bribe their way to secure that all important advantage. The bottom line for this company is profit, and keeping their investors and top executives happy at the expense of the host country. They enter these countries with years of experience and technical know-how. They are here to rescue the ignorant natives. This mindset has permeated, captured and taken over their entire being
that even if a glimmer of right thinking or fair play tries to emerge, that God-like mindset steps in. The relationship must always be that of master to servant wrapped in a neat little package marked greed/ profit. In addition to the foregoing, this company is connected by the hip to the present rulers of America headed by an inept, incompetent, immoral so called President Donald Trump. An example of this connection is Rex Wayne Tillerson, since fired by Trump as Secretary of State. He was once CEO of said
ExxonMobil from 2006 to 2017. Can any right-thinking individual not believe that the goings on in Guyana are not attracting the highest levels of the US government? That translates to the invisible hand of policy as it relates to our country’s oil- we will be directed by and from America. If you doubt this, ask our neighbour Venezuela and take note of the social disruption presently engulfing that country with the ultimate goal of regime change, replacing the current, legally-elected President with a handpicked ‘Yes Man’. This is orchestrated by a country that runs around the world spouting the virtues of
democracy. It is a sad testimony that the political impasse our erstwhile leaders are engaged in will not allow them to put personal ambitions aside and consider the wider picture- that of the benefits of our resources for all our citizens and not allow greedy players like ExxonMobil exploit our divisions, both ethnic and political. Isn’t it time we strive to live our motto- “One People, One Nation, One Destiny”? A people divided among themselves cannot stand and are ready for exploitation. Rusal found that out and are packing up with their/our profits in their greedy, disrespectful pockets. Claudeston G. Massiah
Delay Cummingsburg talks; call out supporters DEAR EDITOR, One continues to be dismayed by the belligerence of the AFC in the talks on a new Cummingsburg Accord. Yes, negotiations are often tough, but the AFC’s use of threats, ultimatums and grandstanding, I find upsetting. These tactics do not come across here as toughness; they smack of “spoilt-childness”. And if I am the average APNU supporter, then this feeling might not be that limited. In contrast, APNU portrays a public image of calmness, patience and quite reserved. In a word- maturity. The next election is
indeed the mother of all elections in Guyana. We need the Coalition partners to band together. The sensitivities surrounding the Cummingsburg Accord, therefore, have to be carefully managed. The AFC has lazily allowed the perception (whether based in reality or not) to fester that it has lost support among critical voting blocs. The party has not to date used its political and PR assets to effectively counter this damaging narrative. Has the AFC addressed this issue in the negotiations? Has it submitted a plan on how it intends to recapture and build
on its electoral support? It would help the party’s public image to do so. Notwithstanding, the two partners should postpone these talks for a few weeks. Use the time to call public meetings of their supporters to discuss the political stakes and to do a reality check. APNU supporters, I am sure, would want to hear from, and talk to their leaders who are close to the heartbeat of the party, such as Volda Lawrence, Amna Ally and Aubrey Norton. After both parties have had this internal conversation and reality check, let the negotiations resume with more maturity and honesty. Sherwood Lowe

Our corporate bullies DEAR EDITOR, I wish to state at the onset that I am most unhappy about penning this letter because I have enjoyed a positive and productive relationship with Republic Bank which spans close to two decades, if not more. I also wish to state at the outset that the top management at Republic Bank, very probably Guyana’s largest bank, has over the last decade or so, really allowed its customer service to deteriorate well beyond what is acceptable, so much so that disregard for customers, at least the regular man-in-the-street (I’m quite sure that they do not treat their well-to-do customers with the disdain meted out to off-the-road customers) has become the norm. Recent events have caused me to wonder if Republic Bank (Camp Street Branch) is allowing itself to become a pawn in our national politics. I received a letter from them indicating that they had now classified the account for the Democratic National Congress as inactive, after being opened for just in excess of one year, and that they would begin deducting $200 from it until I had it reactivated by making a deposit (If this isn’t squeezing customers...). This is even in light of the public activism of the DNC over the last year. My father who died since 2003 had an outstanding balance in an account at Republic Bank. They always advised about the balance on his account years after he passed on (the account was obviously dormant, without deducting any service charges. But they are deducting service charges for the account of the Democratic National Congress after just one year of dormancy.) It would be instructive to determine whether I am being harassed
simply because the DNC is a small political party, as the Loans Officer informed me while discussing another matter. One of the things about which I am almost sure is that Republic Bank does not send letters out to all accounts, which go dormant after one year, which makes this a selective and discriminatory act, which must be condemned, and I suggest investigated to discourage such occurrences. I went into them Tuesday, November 05, 2019 to make a deposit, but couldn’t because of the long lines. Another problem with them is documented below. The following occurred even as the bank kick-started its campaign for the Christmas Season, and has a running ‘Make It Happen’ loan programme (the generous philosophy of this programme is unbelievable in light of my experience documented here). I applied for a personal loan since Wednesday, November 06, 2019- less than G$250,000- and I’m being given the royal runaround. I went in to them Tuesday, November 12, 2019 only to have my Loan’s Officer saying some nonsense about the DNC being a small party. I’m applying for a personal loan, mind you, to replace my spectacles and finance some minor party activities. I spoke to her supervisor the same day, who told me that my file was sent (physically; he called to inquire about it) to Head Office, and that he would call Wednesday. I am quite curious about branches sending files to the Head Office to query small loans, because then they would have to employ more vehicles for this activity. These people made a 22.7% increase in after-tax profits last fiscal year, and they can’t make a decision on

a small loan (less than $250,000) at the branch. I didn’t receive a call on Wednesday, as promised. The Loan’s Officer told me on November 14, 2019 that she took down the wrong phone number. I have an existing facility with the bank, 13 years and more borrowing from them, and she’s telling me she took down the wrong phone number. This is not stupid, but I would like to suggest, downright deceitful, and customers should seriously consider how much they can trust these smiling Loans Officers if they are lying to you. I spoke to the Branch Manager the same day, who asked me to give him a call on November 15, 2019 at around 9:00hrs. I informed him that I agreed to restructure my loan, as was advised by retail section, so that the file should be returned to accommodate this. On Monday, November 18, it will be Day 10. I am hoping this catches the eye of their supervisors and put some stimulus into getting on with my application processed. Strangely enough, I told the Loan’s Officer, it was very possible I would mention her on Facebook for her excellent service. Well, what do you know...! As we’re on the subject, the b a n k ’s management should by now be aware that their customer service to open accounts and perform other ancillary services for customers at both the Camp and Water Street branches is sickeningly time consuming. I find it difficult to imagine that in this day and age, they have never heard of time management. If the current practices are advised by time management, then something must be really very wrong. The Opposition Leader office is the hardest working arm of Govt. DEAR EDITOR, Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joe Harmon, had the temerity to exit a ‘Cabinet’ meeting held 325 days after his party’s government fell to a noconfidence vote and question whether former President Bharrat Jagdeo could serve as a Vice-President in an Irfaan Ali administration. Harmon said: “It is testing the patience of the Guyanese people and their tolerance for lawlessness, because clearly there is a decision by the Caribbean Court of Justice that says that this gentleman [Jagdeo] cannot be the President or Prime Minister. That is really getting through the backdoor”- the irony of his statement was lost on him. Later that same day, Jagdeo held his weekly press conference and fielded a barrage of questions on diverse issues such as the renegotiation of the Liza PSA; how continuous registration differs from house-to-house; what’s his take on relations with CARICOM going forward- a smorgasbord of would/should/could on every national issue. President David Granger is never asked these questions, for he rarely holds press conferences and the few interviews Granger has allowed have been notable for the paucity of new information and lack of specificity on any issuesGranger sloganeers, Jagdeo, in contrast, provides minute
details. It has become clear that the Office of the Leader of the Opposition is the hardest working, most cognizant and effective arm of government. The Kaieteur News frontpage headline for example, ‘Jagdeo selective on oil contracts renegotiations’ is a result of reporters subconsciously channeling the will of the people, a primal scream for help. There is a collective consciousness in Guyana that we are not getting the leadership, which we need at this crucial juncture. There can only be a handful of people who believe that the Granger administration can run a ‘cake shop’ and even those who do, expect it to be with the aid of a battalion of highly paid foreign consultants. The only projects undertaken during the Granger administration have been the continuation of past PPP projects such as the CJIA extension (bungled); the East Coast and East Bank road projects (behind completion
deadlines); the Hinterland ICT hubs provided for and funded by the LCDS. Granger could have stuck with and even expanded the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), an innovative, world-leading conservation initiative. Instead, Granger abandoned a programme that earned US$250M and had the potential to earn even more, in favour of an idealistic, incomprehensible consultant provided Green State Strategy. For most Guyanese, this is the various methods we use to ensure our last remaining (green) $5000 bill is not spent before the next payday- it is an avoidance of the ‘broke’ state. The majority of our population would benefit for the aforementioned Ogle Bypass road, a project that had US$50M in financing and an approved design sitting on David Patterson’s desk when he assumed office in 2015- it is now 2019. Patterson has not completed a foot of that Continued on page 6
DANGER ON THE EAST COAST ROAD DEAR EDITOR, The construction of our East Coast Demerara Highway is most welcome, but driving at nights is a hazardous situation. Missing are the traffic control devices including signs, channelising devices, warning lights and arrow boards. With the rainy season approaching, I do hope the contracting company put himself in order to avoid any calamity. Parmanand Ram

Collusion between the regional The REO is responsible for procurer and supplier? fuel shortages in Region 6
DEAR EDITOR, There is a matter at the Region 4 level, which is of concern to the Better/Hope LBI NDC and the Enmore/ Hope NDC. Both NDCs are seeking to purchase a tractor each from a supplier of a particular brand name made in India. The process went through the Procurement Department of Region Four. Approval was obtained to purchase the tractors. The tractors identified from the specs were four-
wheel driven, suitable to the dumpsite terrain at Lusignan. Lo and behold, when the time arrived to finalise purchasing, the NDCs were asked to sign for two-wheel driven tractors. Natural questions: Where did the process get screwed, and by whom? Were the ads and procurement papers manipulated to the mutual benefit of the procurer and the supplier? Objections were raised by the two NDCs and everybody scampered for cover. The matter is
stalemated at the moment and the two NDCs are without their tractors. The financial year is coming to an end. From all indications, these NDCs will not get their tractors this year. Mr. Editor, I smell a rat. I am respectfully asking that KN’s investigating staff go on the ground and start investigating from the NDCs’ paperwork to the current date. Shocking revelations will surface. Name withheld upon request
Irfaan Ali must apologize for disregarding CCJ DEAR EDITOR, It is with great sadness that I wish to express my disgust for Mr. Irfaan Ali’s statements that he wishes to have Mr. Bharat Jagdeo as his Vice President. A quick glance of the Guyana Constitution Chapter 1:10 Article 101 (1) states “The President shall appoint an elected member of
the National Assembly to be Prime Minister of Guyana. Provided that a person who is not eligible to be elected as President shall not be eligible for appointment as Prime Minister”. Editor, the creators of our esteemed Constitution went to great lengths to imply that basically once you’ve served two terms as President you
cannot serve again in the capacity as President or hold any office which could eventually see you being propelled to the office of President. It is my humbled view based on our laws, our Constitution and the rulings of the CCJ that the current Leader of The Opposition cannot hold the office of Minister, Prime Minister or Vice President because all these aforementioned posts can eventually act for the President in the event he dies, is out of the jurisdiction or is unable to execute the office of the President of Guyana. Mr. Irfaan Ali is running for office of the President and if this is his first action to undermine the rulings of the CCJ and break the Constitution, then I think he is already losing the confidence of Guyana. Mr. Ali, we demand an apology from you for your blatant potential disregard of the constitution. J. Alonzo
DEAR EDITOR, The role of public officials involvement in the public procurement process should ensured the Government of Guyana achieved value for money through fair, competitive, transparent and efficient processes. Regional tender boards are created within each administrative region by the laws of Guyana in order to have jurisdictions over procurement. Region Six has failed to comply with the National Procurement and Tender Administration Act in the formation of the RTB- this is a calculated act by the PNC to facilitate corruption. Corruption in the
administrative aspect of the region is resulting in the inefficient provision of services. The shortage of fuel in Region Six is a living example of the gross mismanagement of the resources allocated for the purchase of fuel and even when fuel is being purchased for excavator to enhanced drainage and irrigation for farmers, it is alleged that the fuel is either being sold or private work is being done for PNC activists. During the PPP/C tenure, no fuel was allowed to be collected in jars from any GuyOil gas stations, a system that was implemented by the then Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, and was active until 2017.
Presently, millions of dollars of fuel are being collected in jars at the GuyOil station at Palmyra, that is facilitating the easy movement of fuel resulting in pilfering leading to the massive shortage of fuel in the Region Six. The refusal to allow scrutiny of these fuel requisitions is a clear indication that there is serious fuel corruption. Central Government; NDIA and the Regional Executive Officers are “peas in one pod” that is undermining the functioning of the RDC’s to ensure the PPP/C fail in the delivery of goods and services to the people. Zamal Hussain
The Opposition Leader office is the... From page 5 essential new road. He has delayed, procrastinated and prevaricated in every possible manner. The road has been redesigned, expanded, and fiddled with endlessly, the cost moved from the $50M grant from the Government of India to $120 M and beyond. It has cost us millions of US dollars to date but not one yard of the road has been built to date. As Guyanese sit with growing frustration in the East Bank traffic jams daily, they should consider the same level of incompetence has no new Demerara Harbour Bridge design approved as yet, again, many millions spent with nothing to show for it. One trillion, two hundred million in budgeted expenditure (excluding loans) and no progress is a failing report card.
Granger did not foster talent and capability in his administration. The genius bureaucrat who got the Berbice Bridge, the Marriott Hotel built and who would have had the Amaila Falls Hydro pushing 168 Megawatts of power into our electricity grid by 2018, Winston Brassington, was arraigned on ludicrous charges of selling land at less than market value to the investors of the MovieTowne mall. The same mall where there was a seeming APNU/ AFC convention on opening night. Granger and his cohorts know nothing about building. They were a poor opposition, failing to read project documents and instead relied on newspaper reports to make judgments. The country lost years of progress when APNU/AFC became the majority in
Parliament; it lost its way when they became the Government. Irfaan Ali has taken up the mantle of leadership in the PPP. His style is team-oriented, and he will expect those who work with him to deliver results based on a wellplanned manifesto of promises. Granger and the AFC are huddled in back-rooms dividing the ministries of the nation’s government as if they were spoils of war, instead of the commitment of service to the nation. APNU/ AFC has delivered nothing because they lack the integrity, work ethic and capability to conceive of and deliver projects on any scale. The country is crying for leadership with vision, capability, and ability to deliver. Elections are on the 2nd of March 2020. Robin Singh
Anti-working class Coalition... From page 4 not think it was any of GuySuCo’s business. When they anointed super-salaried CEOs for GuySuCo, APNU+AFC never even bothered consulting with GuySuCo. When they sell-off GuySuCo’s properties, including GuySuCo’s land, APNU+AFC has no regard for GuySuCo. When they took a $30B loan in the name of GuySuCo, they did not believe GuySuCo should have been involved. Why is it that GuySuCo has no say in where the money is and how the $30B is spent? Suddenly, APNU+AFC think GuySuCo should manage its own affairs and,
suddenly, these people think they must distance themselves from GuySuCo and the workers. One thing is very clear, APNU+AFC is anti-working class. Their assault against sugar workers, in particular, has been disgusting, disgraceful, dishonest, reckless and reprehensible. (President) David Granger not only is the leader responsible for dismissing more than 2,000 Amerindian community development officers; for dismissing more than 7,000 sugar workers; and for downsizing the entire economy with more than 37,000 workers losing their jobs, his party is now advocating the dismissal of
another 20,000 workers from the public service, GuySuCo and GPL. APNU+AFC must not be given a pass for their outrageous, ugly and miserly treatment of sugar workers and for workers in general. APNU+AFC have betrayed sugar workers, public servants and all workers in Guyana again and again. Choosing the sidelines as their preferred option when workers are not paid is abrogating their responsibility and underlines APNU+AFC’s anti-working class credentials. It is remarkable how so many people have lost their voices, as APNU+AFC continue to sink Guyana. Dr. Leslie Ramsammy

GRA is not an industrial relations police There is a dispute between workers of RUSAL and the union representing its workers. The dispute is about the level of wages and salaries increase. In the meantime, the employer is said to be taking steps to protect its assets by moving them to other locations. Some suspect that the employer may also be selling off assets. There is attempt to stop the company from decapitalising since it is felt this could mean the closure of the company and the loss of jobs. As such, the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is being placed on the alert about the possible disposal of equipment on which duty free concessions were granted. The GRA’s is not a proxy for saving workers’ jobs. It is not an industrial relations police. The GRA should be not be inveigled to become involved in an industrial relations dispute. That is not their role or mission. The GRA is concerned with the collection of taxes. They also are required to ensure that items on which duty free concessions are granted are used for the purposes for which the concessions apply. The terms of those concessions would be contained in the agreement which was signed between the government and the company. That agreement would specify the life of the concessions and the obligations of the company if it decides to dispose of any machinery or equipment which was subject to concessions. There is no law
which states that when a company decides to sell a piece of equipment in which it has obtained concessions, it has to have the permission of the government. Such matters are governed by the signed contract between RUSAL and the Government of Guyana. Depending on the agreement signed between the government and the employer, the GRA may or may not have a lien on the proceeds of the sale of assets. The GRA’s entitlement is to collect any taxes, which may be due as a result of that sale. It is not an arbiter of the right of the company to dispose its assets. It cannot dictate whether anything should or should not be sold. The GRA can say that if an item is sold or disposed of otherwise,
then any taxes due should be paid. And the GRA’s entitlement to recover taxes, which may have been foregone as result of duty free concessions, only arises if this is provided for in the incentive agreement between the company and the government. Duty free concessions have a shelf life. If you grant a company a concession on a piece of equipment, it is not likely that the agreement between you and company would allow for a portion of the taxes to be recouped ten or more years after the item was imported. Assets depreciate over time and, correspondingly, the value of concessions. In the case of government workers, they do not have to ask the government for permission to
dispose of duty free vehicles, which have passed three years since they enjoyed the concessions. After three years, the concessions expire, unless otherwise provided for. The Production Sharing Agreement between ExxonMobil and the Government of Guyana gives the company a waiver of taxes, value added taxes, excise taxes, duties free of charges on items used in its petroleum operations. This is a virtual blanket concession on anything used by Exxon and its contractors in exploration and production of
petroleum. There is no provision stating that when Exxon feels that it is time to dispose of the items enjoying these concessions that it has to be given permission by the GRA or that it has to pay any portion of the taxes foregone. The terms of concessions RUSAL would have gotten from the government has not yet been made public. We do not know as yet if the company has repay any portion of those taxes foregone should it decide to dispose of any of its assets. These things would be governed by the agreement
RUSAL signed with the government and the GRA must not get mixed-up in becoming a protector of workers’ rights. No one should attempt to conscript a tax agency into a dispute between employers and employees. That is not the role of the GRA and has never been its role. If there are taxes to be collected, GRA must file the necessary action to recoup such taxes.

Oil companies would only pay GYD$1,000 fine for breaching customs licence The first Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) set to produce oil from the Liza-1 project, the Liza Destiny, has now been appointed as a sufferance wharf and private warehouse. But even though that now means ExxonMobil and other oil companies would be bound by certain procedural regulations in their loading of the vessel with goods, the penalty that they would have to pay if they broke those rules is a miserly GYD$1,000, according to the Customs Act. The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) published a notice of the appointment, pursuant to the Customs Act issued under Section 2 and Part 4 of the Act. A sufferance wharf is a place other than an approved place of loading and offloading by the Revenue
Authority, where a senior customs officer may by discretion and under certain conditions allow the loading and offloading of goods. That now subjects the Liza Destiny vessel to all customs regulations, which concern sufferance wharves. For instance, if the lessee of the vessel, ExxonMobil, wishes to load goods there, it will have to furnish GRA with particulars on the intended goods. ExxonMobil will have to maintain certain conditions as required by the Revenue Authority to maintain the licence allowing it to board goods on to the ship. Those regulations are catered for in Part V of the Customs Act. The Act, outdated as it is, states in Article 134 that if the requirements are not observed, the master of the ship shall be liable to a fine of one thousand dollars, unless
Liza Destiny is the first oil production vessel in Guyana.
the company can sufficiently justify the breach to the customs officer. A fine of GYD$1,000 would mean nothing to an oil company like ExxonMobil, whose turnover amounts to billions of US dollars a year. This absurdly low fine is just a microcosm of a wider state of unpreparedness in Guyana’s legal framework to
Anna Regina granny still missing It has been some two weeks since 73-year-old Philomena Alfred vanished during a visit to Anna Regina’s Republic Bank Branch on November 4, leaving family members baffled and worried. Her granddaughter, Devika Ashby relayed to Kaieteur News that despite the constant searches, they are nowhere close to locating the elderly woman. According to her, persons would constantly report that they saw her in several areas but nothing concrete came out of the searches. “Like they always say, they see her in some area but nothing we ain’t get so far. We hear before she deh Lima Sands, then a taxi driver seh he see she heading near by the riverside but we search and nuttin’ come out”, the woman’s distraught granddaughter said. Recalling the day when the woman disappeared, Ashby stated that her grandmother was in high spirits, ready to go about the usual routine. She stated that the woman and her husband left for the bank to uplift their pension at 11:00 am. Upon reaching, they were met with a packed office so the elderly woman opted to stay outside. At 16:00 hrs, when her husband finally exited the bank, his wife was nowhere to be found.

Ethiopian Airlines undecided whether to take more Boeing 737 MAX jets DUBAI - (Reuters) Ethiopian Airlines has not decided yet whether to take more deliveries of the 737 MAX, the jet grounded worldwide in the wake of crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia, the airline’s CEO said yesterday, as Boeing (BA.N) completes revisions to the aircraft’s design. Asked at the Dubai Airshow whether he supported changes to software and training being finalised by Boeing, Tewolde Gebremariam said, “It is still work in progress... We will have to see it completed and the result of the further tests that are still to come.” Reports into the March 10 crash in Ethiopia and a Lion Air accident in Indonesia, which killed a combined total of 346 people, have suggested an automated system erroneously pointed the planes’ noses down repeatedly after take-off. Boeing says it has revised the software system to prevent repeated dives and is waiting for the approval of U.S. and global regulators before putting the plane back in service, expected early next year. Asked whether Ethiopian Airlines would take any further deliveries of the aircraft, of which it has more than 20 on order, Tewolde told reporters, “ We h a v e n o t y e t decided.”

Colonial Medical Cup Super50
WIEP stay on top with win against Jaguars By Sean Devers in Trinidad In a truncated match last night which had two stoppages due to adverse weather conditions, the West Indies Emerging Players beat Guyana Jaguars by one run in a thrilling last over finish at the Queen’s Park Oval in match reduced to 30 overs. A maiden 50-overs fifty from Johnathan Foo, who made 67 from 53 balls with eight and shared a record stand with Ramaal Lewis, last out, run out for 40 from 31 with five fours gave the Jaguars some hope. However, their 86-run seventh wicket stand which bettered the 82 made by Berbicians Derek Kallicharran and Kamal Singh against Jamaica in 1983 was too little too late. Led by an 89-run third wicket stand between 25year-old Justin Greaves who made 53 from 62 balls with four fours and a six and Joshua DaSilva whose 39 lasted 62 balls with a single four, the Emerging players slumped from 101-2 to 135-7. But Dominic Drakes smashed 18 from eight balls with two sixes and a four, while Camarie Boyce hit three

Left-arm-spinner Chanderpaul Hemraj, fast becoming an all-rounder, had 3-18 from three overs, while off-spinner Lewis took 3-22
from his three overs. Chasing a revised total of 180 in 30 overs on the DLS system, the Jaguars were restricted to 178-8 in 30 overs. Chris Barnwell (24), Leon Johnson (17) and Anthony Bramble (14) got into double
GMR&SC’s Clash of Champions
Zane Maloney steals show, Team Mohamed’s still unbeaten By Calvin Chapman Fans would’ve left the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri well satisfied yesterday evening after a hearty race programme that was increased from 23 to 30 events on the day but most satisfying would have been Barbadian Zane Maloney’s performance in the SR3 radicals’ showdown. The sixteen-year-old Maloney, who is the current British F4 champion, gave the fans real value for their money after sprinting away with all three of the radical races in emphatic fashion. The teenager started on pole and won the first race three seconds ahead of second place Luke Bhola of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T). The Bajan started at the back of the pack due to the reverse grid rules of the radicals’ cup in race 2 but by the fourth of the 15-lap race, much to the surprise of the fans and competitors alike, the racing prodigy was in first place after demonstrating some elite driving. And as expected, Zane won the third radical’s race lapping a couple of competitors in the process. In the superstock and supersport class, as expected, the permanent class of Team Mohamed’s daredevils remained unfettered with British riders Richard Cooper (Supersport) and Daniel Linfoot (Superstock) sweeping their respective classes, while Harry Truelove (Superstock) was second only to Linfoot. In the Group Four Class, 2017 and 2018 CMRC group four champion Andrew King
of Guyana showed his sharpness with a clean sweep of the class despite some fight from Zane’s uncle, Mark Maloney, and local boy Stefan Jeffrey. Suleman Esuf of Barbados swept group three, while his brother Ahmed picked up one win in group two after Guyana’s Rameez Mohamed, who won the first race and looked set to sweep the class was derailed in race two after being rammed in the bumper. The anticipated Choke Starlet Cup saw Motilall Deodass picking up one win, a second and a third place finish yesterday, results which may see him pipping reigning champion Annand Ramchand for the overall championship and $500,000 first prize. All results so far are unofficial and the full list of official results will be published in a subsequent article. The Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) did another stellar job i n k e e p i n g t h i s y e a r ’s N o v e m b e r International race meet at a high standard and the President of the Club, Rameez Mohamed, noted with Kaieteur Sport his gratitude with the multitude of fans who has been supporting the club’s events all year and the sponsors that are committed to seeing the motorsport growing from strength to strength in Guyana. B.M Soat Auto Sales, Mohamed’s Enterprise, KFC, Tropical Shipping, Valvoline, Ansa McAl, Motul, ExxonMobil, Japarts and Air Services were the major sponsors of the event.
figures but failed to go on and too much was left on 29-yearold Foo. Man-of-the-Match Jermaine Levy, who bowled the final over with seven needed and finished with 340, was supported by left arm spinner Camarie Boyce who had 2-26. The Jaguars left out Clinton Pestano, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Nial Smith and invited the Emerging Players to bat on a slow track and sluggish outfield in overcast conditions. A handful of spectators watched as Melius off-drove the first delivery from Raymon Reifer for four before rain stopped play at 12 without loss in the third over. After a delay of 54 minutes, play resumed in bright sunshine and Ronsford Beaton trapped Melius (11) LBW before Gidron Pope (1) got one the left him and edged it to Johnson at first slip at two wickets fell with the score on 12. DaSilva, who scored a century against Volcanoes, joined Greaves and the inform pair embarked on staging operation rebuild. Greaves punched Beaton sweetly to cover boundary and hooked Reifer for four when bowled short. With left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie bowling in tandem, another shower sent the players scurrying off the field at 15:20 hrs in the 13thover with the score on 55-2. Play eventually restarted at 18:30 hrs and Greaves and DaSilva continued from where they left off. Greaves deposited Motie back over his head for six but with the score on 101, DaSilva (39) hit Hemraj to deep cover
to break the 89 run stand. Roland Cato joined Greaves who reached his third fifty of the tournament from 58 balls with four fours and a six before Cato (3) ‘played on’ to Hemraj at 1094 before Hemraj had Greaves caught behind trying to cut to leave to score 114-5 in the 24th over. Guyanese Kevin Sinclair (8) was removed by Lewis at 118-6. Drakes slashed Beaton for four and lofted him for a straight six off successive balls before Yannick Cariah (8) caught behind off Lewis at 135-7. Drakes slashed Lewis to the point boundary before driving him through cover for four. But he was soon caught behind as Lewis struck again at 146-8. Boyce then hammered Hemraj to mid-wicket for a boundary before clobbering Reifer for back-to-back fours. The Jaguars began their chase of the revised target badly when Kemol Savory, for the second time in two matches, drove loosely a wide ball and edged a catch to slip without a run on the board, while five runs later Hemraj touched one that left off Levey as the Jaguars slipped to 5-2. Barnwell and Johnson came together and halted the slide but when on 17 from 24 balls Johnson, after becoming the third Guyana batsman to reach 100 runs, Johnson got an early Christmas gift in the form of knee high full toss from Boyce and wacked it straight to deep mid-wicket at 43-3.
Boyce struck two runs later when Reifer (1) was taken at short mid-wicket and it was left to Barnwell and Foo, the Jaguars’ leading run scorers to try and push the South American team to a win. But Barnwell hit fellow Guyanese Kevin Sinclair to deep mid-wicket at 61-5 and when Anthony Bramble (14) was removed by Levy the Jaguars were 88-6. But Foo kept hopes alive by stroking Drakes to the point boundary before pulling him for another four. A brutal pull of Keon Harding, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, reached the boundary like a scud missile despite the soggy condition of the outfield. A boundary off Drakes carried the Berbician of Chinese decent to a maiden 50 over fifty from 44 balls with six fours. Foo, the Hero of the 2010 Caribbean T20 Final at this venue which qualified Guyana for the Champions League in South Africa, hammered Harding for four to move into the 60s. Lewis pulled Drakes for a boundary and slashed him to point for another and the Emerging Players were looking a bit worried with 16 needed from 12 balls. Lewis thumped Harding for six and in the last over the Jaguars needed seven to win. Foo edged Levy to the Keeper and Permaul and Lewis were run out. The Emerging Players share the top spot with Red Force on 16 points, while Jaguars are third on 12.

NBA roundup: George, Clippers pummel Hawks Paul George scored 37 points in only 20 minutes, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 150-101 victory over the visiting Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night despite playing without Kawhi Leonard. George, who scored 25 points in the first half, converted 10 of 17 shots from the floor overall, including 6 of 11 3-pointers. He made all 11 of his free throws. George, who scored 33 points in his season debut Thursday in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, is 21 of 21 from the line in two games. Lou Williams, who made 15 of 15 free throws, had 25 points off the bench for the Clippers, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Jerome Robinson contributed 21 points, and Montrezl Harrell had 17, helping the Clippers’ bench outscore the Hawks’ reserves 81-35. Trae Young led the Hawks with 20 points to go along with six assists. Young, though, hit just 4 of 16 shots from the floor. De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish each had 12 points, and Jabari
Parker, Damian Jones and Evan Turner chipped in 11 apiece for Atlanta. Rockets 125, Timberwolves 105 James Harden recorded his fifth 40-plus point scoring effort during Houston’s seven-game winning streak, posting 49 in a victory over Minnesota in Minneapolis. Hamstrung by a roster depleted by injuries, Harden took a career-high 41 shots. He finished 8 of 22 on 3pointers and added five rebounds and six assists over 39 minutes. The Timberwolves led by as many as 11 points in the first half but struggled to contain Harden. They also missed the production of their second-leading scorer, forward Andrew Wiggins, who missed his second consecutive game (personal reasons). Karl-Anthony Towns paired 27 points with 15 rebounds to pace the Timberwolves. Trail Blazers 121, Spurs 116 CJ McCollum scored 32 points, and Hassan Whiteside added 21 points

Ronaldo moves onto 99 as Portugal qualify for Euro 2020 LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 99th international goal as the defending champions edged past Luxembourg 2-0 in difficult conditions away from home yesterday to qualify for Euro 2020. Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock in the 39th minute and Ronaldo wrapped it up with four minutes left to ensure that Portugal finished second in Group B with 17 points, three ahead of Serbia who drew 2-2 with Ukraine. Diogo Jota’s shot appeared to be going in any way but Ronaldo prodded it over to claim the goal. He is one short of joining Iran’s Ali Daei, the only player to have scored a century of goals for a national team. “I would have been very proud to have scored my first goal for the national team, but the important thing is we won,” said Jota. “It doesn’t matter who scores — we are in the Euros and that is what we wanted.” Portugal survived several early scares as they struggled to impose their game on a rain-soaked pitch full of divots at the Josy Barthel stadium. Ronaldo, in particular, was not enjoying the conditions and gestured

Needing a win to qualify without having to worry about Serbia’s result, Portugal were in trouble early on as Luxembourg saw a chance to spring an upset. Maurice Deville got above his marker and headed over from Laurent Jans’ cross and Vincent Thill, a thorn in Portugal’s side, had a goalbound shot blocked by Ruben Dias. Luxembourg were even closer when a corner found Gerons Rodrigues unmarked
but he headed over. Portugal began to adapt to the conditions and their more direct approach was rewarded with a goal. Bernardo Silva floated a pass over the Luxembourg defence from deep inside his own half and into the path of Fernandes who took it superbly in his stride and fired a low shot between Anthony Moris and the near post. The second half was more comfortable for Portugal as they dominated possession although there still anxious moments. Ronaldo nearly sealed it
when he curled a free kick narrowly wide from the edge of the area. With four minutes left, Silva’s cross found Jota and Moris got a hand to it but could not stop it crossing the line and Ronaldo poked it home for good measure. “We won’t be favourites but we are going there to win,” said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, whose side also won the inaugural Nations League this year. “We are not the prettiest team but we have won two European tournaments in the last four years.”
many as 20 in the first quarter and 23 in the second, but rallied to take the lead in the third and lead by as many as 15 three minutes into the fourth quarter. Portland came back to tie the game at 111 after a putback layup by McCollum with 2:26 to play. The Trail Blazers were the better team down the stretch, outscoring San Antonio 10-5 in the final two minutes to snap a two-game losing streak. Damian Lillard added 22 points for the Blazers, and Rodney Hood hit for 16 points in the win. LaMarcus Aldridge led the Spurs with 30 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Bucks 102, Pacers 83 Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded 26 points and 13 rebounds as Milwaukee ran off from host Indiana for a comfortable victory in a duel between the Central Division’s top two teams in Indianapolis. The game was supposed to be a reunion between Pacers guard Malcolm Brogdon and his former Bucks teammates, but Brogdon was a scratch with a sore back that also cut short his playing time Friday night at Houston. Brogdon left Milwaukee in an offseason sign-and-trade. Indiana held a four-point lead late in the first period before Robin Lopez hit a pair of jumpers, one a 3-pointer, to give Milwaukee the lead for good. The Pacers, who had won four in a row before losing Friday at Houston, never got closer than seven in the second half. Mavericks 110,
Raptors 102 Luka Doncic had 26 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists, and Dallas defeated visiting Toronto to snap a two-game losing streak. Kristaps Porzingis added 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Mavericks. Seth Curry and former Raptor Delon Wright each had 15 points, while Maxi Kleber and Dorian Finney-Smith each scored 10. Normal Powell led the Raptors with a season-best 26 points, and Fred VanVleet added 24. Pascal Siakam had 15 points and seven assists, and Matt Thomas had 10 points as Toronto completed a 3-2 road trip. Nets 117, Bulls 111 Spencer Dinwiddie had a team-high 24 points, Joe Harris added 22 points and eight assists, and Brooklyn rallied for a win over host Chicago. Taurean Waller-Prince added 13 points, and Garrett Temple had 12 for the Nets, who ended a three-game losing skid. Jarrett Allen tallied 11 points, and Theo Pinson contributed 10. Zach LaVine scored 36 points on 11-for-24 shooting for Chicago, which lost for the second time in three nights. The Bulls received double-double performances from both Wendell Carter Jr. (18 points, 14 rebounds) and Lauri Markkanen (16 points, 10 rebounds). Hornets 103, Knicks 102 Devonte’ Graham hit a career-high nine 3-pointers, scored 29 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left as Charlotte edged host New York. The Hornets won their second straight game on a last-second shot. A night after Malik Monk’s buzzerbeater beat the Detroit Pistons to halt Charlotte’s four-game losing streak, it was Graham’s turn to complete a comeback from 15 points down early in the third quarter and from eight points down in the final 6:40. New York held a 102-98 lead on Julius Randle’s dunk with 48.2 seconds left. After two free throws by rookie PJ Washington, Randle airballed a floater with 12.3 seconds to go, setting it up for Graham. After the timeout, Nicolas Batum inbounded the ball from near midcourt to Washington. Washington made a bounce pass to Graham, who gained enough separation from Frank Ntilikina to hit the 3-pointer from well beyond the top of the key. (Field Level Media)

Gurbaz blitz helps Afghanistan clinch T20 series win over Windies
Rahmanullah Gurbaz plays the fine scoop. (AFP) AFP - Teenage opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit an attacking half-century to set up Afghanistan’s 29-run series-clinching win over West Indies in the third Twenty20 international yesterday. Gurbaz hit 79 off 52 balls as Afghanistan posted 156 for eight, a total their bowlers defended by restricting the West Indies to 127-7 in Lucknow. They won the series 2-1 after losing the opening game and being swept in the
preceding ODIs 3-0. Paceman Naveen-ul-Haq took three wickets to choke the West Indies’ chase despite a valiant 52 by wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope. “You have to be smart and cool and calm as a professional player. Sometimes you are losing but your energy and mindset for upcoming matches is more important,” said skipper Rashid Khan. “Yes we lost the first three ODIs and the first T20 but still
the focus was that we can still win two trophies - T20s and Test cricket.” But it was the 17-year-old Gurbaz, a wicketkeeperbatsman, who stood out with his second T20I fifty after the Afghans were in early trouble at 12 for two. Gurbaz, named man of the match, put on a crucial 50-run stand for the fourth wicket with former captain Asghar Afghan, who made 24, and surpassed his previous T20I best of 61. He smashed six fours and
five sixes before falling to West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard. Pacemen Sheldon Cottrell, Kesrick Williams and Keemo Paul took two wickets each. The West Indies lost regular wickets to falter in their chase against a disciplined Afghanistan attack that made the most of a slow track. Hope, who was dropped on 11 by Naveen off Gulbadin Naib, completed his second T20I fifty but got little support from the other end. Bowling all-rounder Karim Janat could not repeat his heroics from the second game where he claimed five wickets and scored 26 runs, but was named man of the series. “The guys would have taken a lot from this series and how to adapt and play on slower pitches,” said Pollard. “We have a long-term plan, but we have to deal with what’s in front of us right now. Can’t say what will happen in October next year

PRISTINA (Reuters) England captain Harry Kane scored his 12th goal of the campaign as they secured a place among the top six seeds for next year’s European Championship with a somewhat flattering 4-0 win in Kosovo in their final qualifier yesterday. England were in second gear for much of the match as Harry Winks put them ahead in the 32nd minute, but late goals by Kane, Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount secured another big win and took the team’s goal tally to an impressive 37 from eight qualifiers. England, already through to the Euro 2020 tournament in which the semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley, finished top of Group A with 21 points, the only blip being
last month’s 2-1 loss away to the Czech Republic, who qualified as runners-up. Kosovo finished third on 11 points. Their chances of automatic qualification disappeared after a 2-1 defeat by the Czechs on Thursday but they could advance via the playoffs. “It was a tight game and a good test for us really,” said England manager Gareth Southgate. “It was a difficult pitch, with players slipping and passes going astray. “We needed a tighter game and a challenge. I’m happy we got that. We had to sustain spells of pressure and gave them chances - on another night that would be a problem. But attacking we were ruthless.”
England took a while to impose themselves on the game but broke through when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain slid a pass into the path of Winks who had all the time and space needed to slot the ball into the bottom corner for his first international goal. Two months ago England led the corresponding home fixture 5-1 at halftime but their somewhat sloppy display on Sunday, lacking intensity, left them way short of those levels. LESS THREATENING Kosovo, who exposed England’s defence a few times in their 5-3 defeat in September, were less threatening but unmarked captain Amir Rrahmani headed wide early in the second half.
Kane, who got a hat-trick in Thursday’s 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro, was on target again in the 79th minute with a sharp shot after Kosovo failed to clear a Raheem Sterling cross. His 12th goal made him the leading scorer across the competition and the first England player to score in every match of a qualifying campaign. Sterling, back in the side after his one-match ban for attacking team mate Joe Gomez, was provider again three minutes later for Rashford, who scored with a neat first time shot. Substitute Mount then claimed his first England goal in stoppage time, cashing in on another defensive error and a neat pass from Kane.

Kaepernick ready to play for any team after tryout (Reuters) - A spirited Colin Kaepernick said he was ready to play anywhere in the National Football League after a long awaited tryout at an Atlanta area high school on Saturday. “I’ve been ready for three years. I’ve been denied for three years,” said the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who made headlines by kneeling at games during the U.S. anthem to protest against racial injustice. He has said teams would not sign him because they wanted to distance themselves from the protests, which U.S. President Donald Trump criticized as unpatriotic and disrespectful. “So we are waiting for the 32 owners, 32 teams and (league commissioner) Roger Goodell to stop running,” the 32-year-old said. “Stop running from the truth, stop running from the people. “We are ready to play. We are ready to go anywhere.” The NFL had arranged the tryout at the Atlanta Falcons training facility, but at the last minute the quarterback’s representatives moved the workout to a high school stadium. Kaepernick said it was done so media could be present. Live stream video showed Kaepernick making a variety of
throws to a group of receivers to applause from on-lookers. His arm talent remains “elite” and is the same as when he came out of college, ESPN reported an NFL executive commenting after the workout, adding Kaepernick threw the ball well. Online viewers also said he has a future in the NFL. “He still has lower third to mid tier starter ability,” said one viewer on Twitter. “If media circle didn’t follow, someone would have him as a backup at minimum already.” Another said, “So far, Kaepernick looks like Kaepernick. Outstanding velocity, everything on a rope, can make any throw. Questions teams will have about different arcs and speeds, performance when hurried, and progression-reading — the questions I’d have - can’t really be answered here.” Kaepernick’s representatives made the move to the high school after accusing the league of not acting in a forthright manner in organizing the workout. “From the outset, Mr. Kaepernick requested a legitimate process and from the outset the NFL league office has not provided one,” they said in a statement. “Most recently, the NFL has demanded that as a precondition to
the workout, Mr. Kaepernick sign an unusual liability waiver that addresses employment-related issues and rejected the standard liability waiver from physical injury proposed by Mr. Kaepernick’s representatives.” Kaepernick also had requested all media be allowed into the workout to observe and film it, but the NFL denied the request, the statement said. NFL DISAPPOINTED The NFL said it was informed of Kaepernick’s decision 30 minutes before the workout was to begin. “We are disappointed that Colin did not appear for his workout,” the league said in a statement, saying it had made considerable effort to work cooperatively with Kaepernick’s representatives. “Colin’s decision has no effect on his status in the league. He remains an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any club,” the statement added. Representatives from at least 25 of the NFL’s 32 teams had been scheduled to attend the workout. Several made it to the new location. Before the move, both protesters and supporters had waited for Kaepernick outside the Falcons’ facility. One protester, waving a U.S.
flag, held a sign that said “Colin Kaepernick un-American Loser. Get out of my town”. Supporters included one follower wearing a Kaepernick jersey and displaying a sign that read “I’m with Kap”. KNELT DURINGANTHEM Among the first players to kneel during the pregame U.S. national anthem in protest against extrajudicial killings of black people by police, Kaepernick has been unable to find a team to sign him since 2017. A second-round draft choice in 2011, he played with the 49ers for six seasons, leading them to the 2013 Super Bowl and the National Football Conference title game the next season. During the third preseason game in 2016 he began sitting during the U.S. anthem. The following week and during regular season, Kaepernick began kneeling as protest against social injustice. He became a free agent after the 2016 season and remains unsigned. Kaepernick filed a collusion grievance against NFL owners in October 2017 after going unsigned as a free agent. The two sides resolved the grievance in February under a confidentiality agreement.

Tsitsipas battles back to beat Thiem for ATP Finals title LONDON (Reuters) Stefanos Tsitsipas crowned an incredible year as he battled back to beat Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-7(6) 6-2 7-6(4) to win the ATP Finals title at the O2 Arena yesterday. The 21-year-old debutant, the youngest of the eight qualifiers for the elite season-ender, displayed resilience and flair in equal measure to claim his biggest title to date. Thiem edged an intense first set full of powerful baseline rallies but Tsitsipas, the first Greek player to play in the event, was undaunted and responded in style. He surged into a 4-0 lead in the second set and Thiem appeared to be flagging when he then trailed 3-1 in the deciding set before rediscovering his early spark. Thiem broke back to take the showpiece into a deciding tiebreak but it was Tsitsipas, the crowd favourite, who stayed strong, moving 6-4 ahead and clinching victory when Thiem fired a tired forehand wide. Tsitsipas becomes the youngest winner of the tournament since Lleyton Hewitt, aged 20, won it in 2001.

Bowler James Pattinson suspended for first Test

BBC Sport - Australia captain Tim Paine says fast bowler James Pattinson has “let himself down” after being found guilty of his third code of conduct breach of 2019. It means Pattinson will miss the first Test against Pakistan in Brisbane for disciplinary reasons. Cricket Australia took action after the 29year-old used abusive language towards an opponent during Victoria’s defeat by Queensland last week. “I made a mistake in the heat of the moment,” said Pattinson. “I’m gutted to miss a Test match, but the standards are there for a reason and the fault is mine.” The exact details of Pattinson’s latest offence have not been revealed, but he was found guilty of a level-two breach relating to personal abuse of a player, which was enough to trigger a one-match ban. In a statement, the governing body said the bowler “apologised immediately and unreservedly to the opponent and the umpires, and did not contest the charge”. “He knows he’s let himself down,” added Paine. The first Test starts on Thursday (00:00
