Guyanese still in the dark…

As another foreign company boasts of “gold fever in Guyana”

By Shervin Belgrave As Guyanese remain in the dark about all mining contracts the government has signed with foreign companies, another Canadian corporation has entered Guyana, and is reportedly boasting to its shareholders that there is a “gold fever” in the country.

The company, Alerio Gold Corp, entered Guyana in June last year, and had announced its presence in the country via multiple press statements it had posted on its website.

Although the Guyanese government made no formal announcement to its citizens about the arrival of Alerio Gold, the company ensured that its shareholders were made aware that it had bought three large gold fields in Guyana. Those three large gold fields, according to the Canadian firm, were purchased from another company, ‘Goldeneye’, to which the Guyanese government had leased land.

Upon its arrival in June

2021, Alerio Gold entered into a deal with Goldeneye, to purchase two of the three gold fields first; the Tassawinni and the Harpy gold projects, located in

Cuyuni Mazaruni, Region Seven.

In one of its 2021 press releases, Alerio Gold stated, “…The Company has entered into an asset purchase agreement with Goldeneye Capital Corp (Goldeneye), in respect of the acquisition of two gold mining properties located in Guyana, the Tassawinni Property and the Harpy

Property”.

Alerio Gold then informed its shareholders that Tassawinni is a 3,413 acre property with proven gold resource, while Harpy sits next to the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM)-a gold field owned by Chinese company, ZiJin Mining Inc. - that has been producing over 120,000 ounces of gold per year.

Days later, the Canadian corporation closed off its purchase deal and began setting-up for exploration work on the properties.

Months after closing its first deal, the company issued another press statement in January, 2022, with the headline, “Gold fever Guyana”. In that statement, Alerio Gold announced to shareholders that it is going to buy a third mega gold field in the Continued on page 15

Bar Association flags systemic abuse of power by police...says Force continues to show disregard for rule of law The Bar Association of Guyana has expressed its disappointment at the comments made by the Attorney General (AG), Anil Nandlall, SC, in relation to the picketing exercise to show solidarity with Attorney-at-Law, Tameika Clarke, who was detained

by SOCU for advising her client to remain silent during the course of a criminal investigation conducted by the Unit.

On Friday at noon, scores of lawyers draped in their robes and holding placards protested SOCU's Headquarters on Camp Street,

Georgetown over Clarke's arrest.

Clarke said that that she is dissatisfied with the progress of the investigation into the incident.

President of the Bar Association, Pauline Chase had described Clarke's detention as “disgraceful”.

“It has been a week and we have not had any positive movement and we issued a statement on the same day calling for a number of actions to be taken and we have seen no movement there…You see lawyers out here but this is a wider issue, it is a rule of law issue, it is a

fundamental right issue, the right to Counsel. The right to remain silent is ingrained, these are none negotiable rights and it affects us all,” the Bar Association President stated.

To add insult to injury, the Bar Association, in a follow up statement noted its disappointment in the comments emanating from the Attorney General.

According to the Bar Association, Nandlall demonstrates a lack of awareness of the endemic and systemic abuse of power, disrespect and disregard for

the fundamentals of the Rule of Law displayed by members of the Guyana Police Force, in their interaction with members of the public and the legal profession.

Nandlall had expressed in a statement that thought that this matter was “… water under the bridge. But obviously, there is an aggressive agenda being pursued.

And I am not sure to what end.”

Govt. to create national marine strategy to promote sustainable use of Guyana's marine space – Pres. Ali DPI - President Irfaan Ali said that with support from the United Kingdom Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme, Guyana has implemented a plan for the sustainable use of Guyana's marine space.

Under this plan, the government will create a national marine strategy that will be country specific, and in keeping with the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030.

President Ali was speaking at the American Caribbean Maritime

Foundation (ACMF) Anchor Awards Gala at the Ft. Lauderdale Yacht Club, Florida, where he was invited as a special guest.

The Guyanese leader highlighted the importance of promoting the sustainable use of Guyana's maritime space, noting that it will bring tremendous economic development to the country and its people.“The sustainable use of the space will open up our potential for renewable energy, shipping, port development, bring opportunities,” he stated.

To c a t e r f o r t h e s e opportunities, President Ali said the government intends to diversify training, and extend to other skilled areas such as; coastal engineering, naval architecture, marine service, port engineering, planning and development, marine pollution prevention and fisheries management, among others.

“I'm saying this to say to you that part of our strategy is to build our human resources in all these areas.

in human resources only in oil and gas,” he asserted.

The overall aim, President Ali said is to support the CARICOM region in building a firstclass human resource capacity to serve regionally and globally.The marine space of the Caribbean constitutes a major trading route. It is an important link between South America and markets in the North, he pointed out.In the case of Guyana, President Ali said the county will eventually have a deepwater harbour

with the aim of becoming a major shipping hub.

He said the maritime industry, must assume greater responsibility of protecting the environmental integrity of the region's marine resource.The president further stated that the maritime sector must be modernised in order to help the region to seize the opportunities for global trade and exploitation of the 'blue economy.'“Enhancing the region's human resources is an integral element of that modernisation,” he stated.

In this regard, he

applauded the efforts of the ACMF to strengthen the region's human resources in the maritime sector through scholarships, grants and other forms of support.

‘NO FREE PASS’ Jagdeo's new terms for PSA must apply to all future ExxonMobil projects - Patterson

C

lenching the keys t h a t h a v e unlocked more than 11 billion barrels of oil already in the Stabroek Block, with four projects already approved by the Government, oil major ExxonMobil should also be subjected to the terms of the new Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) for all other projects it wants to pursue in Guyana's waters.

This is according to Shadow Oil and Gas Minister, David Patterson, who during an Alliance For Change (AFC) media engagement, on Friday, insisted that a level playing field must be instituted, to allow for free and fair competition in the sector.

Importantly, he pointed to the fact that ExxonMobil holds the licenses to the country's largest oil block, the Stabroek field, which measures approximately 26,800 square kilometres.

The PPP government announced this past week that it will be putting on auction 14 oil blocks in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Notably, the size of these blocks is between 1,000 to

It is in this regard that the AFC believes the new terms, which seek to secure more benefits to Guyanese, must also extend to the Stabroek Block, which is governed by a separate deal that locals have been protesting for months.

While the Alliance For Change commended the administration for reportedly following in its footsteps by auctioning the oil blocks, Patterson insisted that the government must not allow ExxonMobil to be given a “free-pass”.

The Shadow Natural Resources Minister explained, “I don't see it's unreasonable if the government says to Exxon,

we will grandfather you in for these four, or, maybe the next one- the four or the five discoveries that you have- we will grandfather you in, in the sense that the old deal can work for the four as a matter of compromise the other 30 discoveries you shall be subject to the new regime and everyone else in the oil industry will be on a level playing field.”

The term 'grandfathered in' also known as the 'grandfather policy', for those who may not be aware, is a provision in which an old

As such, Patterson said this principle can be applied to the first four projects that have already been approved, “for their pioneering work that they would have done in first discovering oil on the block,” but to exclude the company from this new fiscal arrangement would simply be unacceptable he added.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday, while announcing the auction of 14 of Guyana's oil blocks, also shared some of the terms that will be included in the fresh deal.

He was keen to note that all future blocks will be governed by these new fiscal arrangements, while Exxon, will continue to enjoy the lopsided 2016 deal.

Notably, the new PSA will feature a 10 percent royalty rate (up from the existing two percent); a 10 percent corporation tax and ring-fencing provision.

Ring-fencing would allow for the earnings from one

Local Government authorities such as Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) provide a number of services. Many of these areas are crucial to cohabitating in a healthy and safe communal space. According to local government specialist and oppositionnominated Guyana Elections Commission GECOM Commissioner Vincent Alexander, this is the reason why it is equally crucial that persons give a significant amount of consideration to whom they will elect to represent them and the communities to the level of the RDCs and NDCs during the holding of a Local Government Elections (LGE).Alexander told Kaieteur News that many councilLors are voted in to represent citizens in areas such as garbage collection, sanitization, erecting of structures,

mobilizing the overall development of the community. He stressed that once elected, NDCs and RDCs can either implement policies and projects which will make their communities better or worse.

He said, “Voting in elections gives the voters the opportunity to elect persons who can best undertake and be answerable for those operations in their interest.”

Additionally, Alexander noted that local government representatives are not providing the services which other agencies are providing.“For those activities, they have to generate revenue. This they do through property taxes and other fees etc. The RDCs and NDCs also get a government subvention to assist with carrying out its functions.”Additionally, he said the LGEs provide a means of bridging the community and persons elected to serve them.

The company stated, “Alerio Gold Corp is pleased to announce that it has entered into a property purchase agreement to acquire a 100% interest in five gold prospecting licenses in Guyana, known as the Puruni Gold Property”.

Alerio finalized the deal in July last and described Puruni to its shareholders as a gold field that spans some 9000 acres of land, situated in an area that is rich in quartz vein-related gold mineralization.

As the new foreign company continues to explore Guyana's gold fields, the government is yet to deliver on its promise to make all mining contracts public.

Kaieteur News (KN) Publisher Glenn Lall and his reporters have been repeatedly bombarding the Vi c e - P r e s i d e n t B h a r r a t Jagdeo at his press conferences to have all mining contracts released.

Jagdeo had promised that he will ensure that the contracts be released; since he had said it's his personal view that such documents should be made public.

Months have passed, and during a recently aired programme on Kaieteur Radio, hosted by Lall, Jagdeo was once again reminded about the promise he had made. His response was: “I am not your post boy” and told the KN Publisher that he must write the relevant authorities such as, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Ministry of Natural of Resources for the contracts.

L a l l h o w e v e r, h a d expressed that he had asked the authorities, via messages and letters for the contracts on many occasions, but they have not been released publicly. The Vice President

promised again that he would find out what is going on, because he believes the contracts should be made public and get back to Lall. A month has passed already and Kaieteur News and its Publisher are yet to receive a feedback from Jagdeo about the contracts.

While the nation continues to wait for a public disclosure of all mining contracts, large foreign corporations are making lucrative gold finds in the country. Just two weeks ago, Kaieteur News reported that, “Omai's new gold find is two times Guyana's US$3.2B debt”. In that news article, it was reported that Omai, a Canadian company, disclosed in a statement to its shareholders that it is “extremely pleased”, because it has been able to double a previous gold find of 1.6 million ounces of gold to 3.69 million ounces of gold within nine months. At the current world market price for gold, the find by Omai is worth over US$6.2B dollars.

Notably, Guyanese learnt of this golden discovery through the mining company, while government remains silent on that deal and others.

It must be noted that while the discovery has the potential to rake in huge profits for the country, Guyanese are clueless about how much will be earned from the massive gold discovery, since the contract between Omai and Guyana remains secret.

In the meantime, Guyana's Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh announced in May last that three other foreign companies larger than Omai will be coming to Guyana. In making the disclosure, he skillfully glossed over how much the country would gain from these additional activities. He would only say that jobs would be created.

Community reps can take advantage of the talent that resides in various organizations and political parties..The LGEs also give citizens a chance to help develop leadership skills, especially those who are involved in leading their local communities. These skills, once developed, can then be transferred or utilized at the national level to move the country forward.

Glenn Lall makes final submission in oil tax waiver case Final submissions have been filed by Kaieteur attorney for Kaieteur News Publisher, News Glenn Lall, in the case where he Publisher, challenged the Government of Guyana’s (GOG) decision to grant massive tax Glenn Lall waivers to the oil companies and their affiliates.

In the final document submitted to the Court, Lall’s lawyer Mohamed R. Ali deposed several parts of the agreement between ExxonMobil subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) violated certain provisions of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Act as well as the Financial Administration and Audit Act. Against this background, he submitted that any exemptions referred to in Article 15 of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Act, purporting to extend concessions to persons other than the licensees is in conflict for the court’s consideration including whether the agreement between the with the law.

V ILLAGE Letter Kenny Village in Berbice is

peaceful, humble and picturesque

L

etter Kenny many years ago was regarded as an estate with very few houses occupying the vast land space that was available back then; but like any other village in Guyana, it developed over the years. People from other villages moved from where they were, settled and made a life in the community. You will find the township of Rose Hall located approximately 5km northwest of Letter Kenny and Port Mourant 4 ½ km away, giving the villagers access to the Port Mourant Market and the commercial hub of Rose Hall, a convenience when doing business or just running personal errands.

You'll find quite a few liquor shops with a Chinese Restaurant, church, mandirs, a water bottling plant, a supermarket, schools, a cemetery, a gas station and more.

Persons are employed either at the sugar estates, in the public sector, and mostly the private sector, or self-employed. It is reasonable to say that everyone live their lives quite privately with not much interference from neighbours, at least those were the sentiments of some of the villagers, who were relaxing either in their hammocks, or on their verandas. While many were too shy to speak, some were more than willing to engage with us.

Nadira Nagamootoo well known as 'Nado', a close relative of former Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, was home alone with her dogs that she takes care of.

'Nado' was cooking Cuirass Curry (pronounced cu-ras) for dinner, while her husband was in the backdam tending to the farm. They have two children, one who resides in a foreign country, while the other lives with them. Bubbling with personality, 'Nado' said she got married and has been living in Letter Kenny for the past 16 years and has no regrets about moving to the community. She said that before moving with her husband, she was living in the village of Lancaster and while she has been living comfortably, she had plans to migrate overseas.

“Living in Letter Kenny, I live on the road corner and so I don't mingle much with the neighbours,

The humble home of Mr. Harripersaud life is good here and whatever the time I have been here, I never had any problem with Letter Kenny people…” she said proudly.

'Nado' said she loves living in Letter Kenny mostly because of the peace and quiet.

“Like if you tek you food and you eat, nobody look at you, you come out, you do what you want, to me how me live here, I have a good life you know…”

According to the housewife, while she takes care of the home and cooks for her family, her husband takes care of the rice lands and gardening daily. She disclosed that during the heavy flooding that swept across various areas in Region 6 and Guyana, they sustained losses and while assistance was made available through the Government of Guyana to compensate farmers for the losses incurred, 'Nado' said they never received anything.

“The $25,000 we got, but when we lose the whole plot of okra, we didn't get anything but the people who do these things, me na give them blame. But I am just saying what I need to say, they have their choice for people who they put to receive and maybe because we are Nagamootoos…” the woman said.

She stressed that many times they feel discriminated against by the local authorities because of their relationship with the former

and more and we applied for the kitchen garden grant, but we never get nothing…to me the Nagamootoos here does be treated different.”

Despite some setbacks, 'Nado' said she is still thankful for life

Urmilla Prime Minister, but believes that while President Ali has a vision for One Guyana, the people who are doing the work for him at the ground level are not carrying out his vision.

“Abee does plant we whole backyard with pepper, baji (callaloo), sweet potato, cassava

and the opportunity to live in comfort.

Meanwhile, Urmilla Jaipaul, who moved from Good Hope, Mahaica to Letter Kenny three years ago, said that she loves the community and it's not as different from where she lived, and she has been adapting to village and its people.

“It's quiet, the people are quiet too, some drive taxi, some work in the backdam and stuff like that,” she said.

A typical day for Urmilla would

be waking up and preparing her children for school. She said that when they are off to school, she takes some time for herself, but also makes the time to complete daily chores.

The mother of three said she has gotten use to the lifestyle and wouldn't have it any other way.

As we made our way further into the village, Mr. Harripersaud was also relaxing in his hammock, while listening to our very own Mr. Glenn Lall's show being rebroadcast. He said he listens to him quite often and that “plenty of what he does talk does mek sense.”

Harripersaud did not speak much since he wanted to get some rest, but was very kind. He could not recall his age but said that he has been living in Letter Kenny all his life. His home was quite picturesque, and it seemed like he tried over the years to preserve the original structure of the building while making minor enhancements for comfort.

Overall, residents of Letter Kenny take pride in where they live and also pride themselves in keeping their surroundings wellkept.

Examining the Education Ministry’s plan to create a better learning environment for Indigenous Children The Ministry of Education has approached the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for a US$43M loan which will be used to create a better learning environment for our Indigenous children.

The project supports the expansion of existing primary schools and the construction of four new primary schools in communities that have unequal or no access to primary education.

Importantly, some of the project interventions will occur in Amerindian communities, as outlined below: ª% Of two schools identified for expansion, one is located in Kariakau, Region 1. Kariakau is an established Amerindian community that is managed by a Village Council. ª% One of the four new schools to be constructed is to be located in Ta b a t i n g a , R e g i o n N i n e .

Tabatinga is located in the township of Lethem, and while it is not an Indigenous community, there is a significant Indigenous population that is located in the community and in the catchment areas identified to benefit from the new construction. Tabatinga is a planned housing scheme developed in two phases and falls under the jurisdiction of the Lethem Town Council. ª% The project also seeks to create a better learning environment in 31 hinterland schools mainly in Regions One, Seven, Eight, and Nine.

The schools identified (see chart attached to feature) will have access to an improved learning environment with the provision of essential services including water, energy, and connectivity. They will also see an improved quality of education services for vulnerable

populations through a package of comprehensive services to create multicultural and student-centered classrooms.

In addition, for the targeted schools, the project will see the provision of devices for students (Grades 1-3) and their teachers.

For the schools to be rehabilitated, extended and outfitted, most of these are located in Amerindian communities.

Currently, the following schools from these communities are

identified to benefit: 1. Kariakau Primary School 2. Hosororo Primary School 3. Wauna Primary School 4. Arakaka Primary School 5. Hobodeia Primary School 6. Monkey Mountain Primary School 7. Mahdia Primary School 8. Yorong Peru Primary School 9. Karasabai Primary School 10. Achawib Primary School 11. Annai Primary School 12. Potarinau Primary School In its Socio-Cultural Analysis dated October 2022, the IDB said it is critical that upgrades be done to the schools identified so as to address massive overcrowding.

It found for example that Kariakau Primary School (Region 1) was initially designed to accommodate approximately 20 to 30 students. However, the school currently has an enrollment of 35 students in Grades One to Six. In addition, the school also houses a nursery unit with an enrollment of 44 students, and a Primary Top with an enrollment of 74 students in Grades Seven, Eight and

The IDB in its report said the overcrowding of the school has resulted in classroom activities being conducted at the ICT Hub and the Teachers’ Quarters, and the school having to operate on a rotational basis where students of specific grades attend class on a shift system.

At Tabatinga (Region Nine) where a new school will be constructed, students, for the time being, are required to travel 20-25 minutes by walking to attend the Arapaima Primary School, where there is mass overcrowding. The IDB said Arapaima Primary School was built to house 250 students but currently has 515.

At Hosororo Primary School in Region One, the IDB said there is “severe overcrowding and lack of facilities.” It said the main auditorium space is divided by chalkboards into five classrooms which accommodates Grades One to Five and there are two Grade Six classes which are located in the space allocated for the science and Information Technology labs.

The financial institution said too that the upper flat of the building houses Grades 7-11, but is currently without electricity due to the building not being wired. It further noted that the current overcrowding is resulting in a daily disruption in classes due to the noise and distraction of all the primary grades being housed in one

The bank said too that the gap accounts for the inability to access resources such as adequate schools and classrooms facilities, access to essential services such as water, internet and electricity, and deficiencies in the delivery of education, such as an adequate number of qualified teachers to student’s ratio.

Importantly, the bank said the gap is widened in communities that are located in remote locations such as Kariaku, Region One where it is expensive to access and where there are no alternative options to the public school system. It said this results in overcrowding of classrooms and students competing for limited resources.

Furthermore, the IDB said primary schools in communities like Kariaku and Hosororo are expected to provide resources to educate nursery levels and primarytop levels where no nursery or secondary schools are available. As such, students that have completed a primary education are forced to continue their education at a primary top, migrate to another area where there is a secondary school,

Once key upgrades are completed, the IDB said it is expected that approximately 3,261 students in the Hinterland regions will benefit from the improved learning environment.

Squats Start by standing with your feet apart and make sure

your toes are facing the front, rather than sideways. Next, bend your knees, and keep your hips back and you shift your body into a sitting position.

Be sure to keep your heels and toes on the ground and your chest and shoulders back. After holding the position for just about three seconds, you can press into your heels, straighten those legs and return to a standing position. If you’re new to exercise, start off doing about 10 squats at a time.

You may try other exercises and return to squatting to get about as many as you want in!

Tricep dips Tricep Dips are a simple arm and back workout that you may practise at home to gain weight. You might be glad to hear that this exercise also requires no special equipment.

If you’ve got a bench at home, or a sturdy chair, you are going to need it. Sit at the edge of the bench (or chair) and grip the edges with your hands. Get out of the sitting position and slowly bring your hips to the ground.

Keep your arms semi-flexed and elbows close to the body.

Your legs should be slightly bent, resting on the heels.

When your butt nearly reaches the floor, your elbows should form a 90-degree angle. Maintain the pressure on your palms and return to your seated posture to complete the rep.

Bench press For this exercise, you are going to need the barbell to

help you build muscle mass.

Start by lying back on a flat bench. Using a medium width grip (a grip that creates a 90-degree angle in the middle of the movement), lift the bar from the rack and hold it straight over you with your arms locked. This will be your starting position.

One specialist recommends breathing in as you bring the weights towards your chest.

After a brief pause, push the bar back to the starting position as you breathe out.

This is one rep.

Dead lifts To perform dead lifts, you are going to need something to lift. You may do this with the barbell or dumbbell, if you please.

Begin by standing with your legs slightly apart with your dumbbells in each hand.

Hold the equipment in front of you with your palms facing your body. Slightly bend your knees, then begin to lower the dumbbells towards the ground. To maintain proper form in doing this, keep your back straight and shoulders locked instead of leaning forward.

Only your waist should be lowered as you take the dumbbells slowly to the ground at a depth that is comfortable to you. While keeping your back straight, return to your standing position.

President Ali on Al-Jazeera I was encouraged that His Excellency, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali made it to the big time with an appearance on Al-Jazeera.

On listening to what he articulated, and how he did, I had to hang my head in shame.

The President blew the big moment, and came across as a man parroting word for word what the American interviewer put before him as questions.

On two occasions, I heard my President, who is so sweet in reading from sweeter scripts when in Guyana, unable to speak with words of his own and repeating verbatim a long string of what was conveniently extended for him to nibble. President Ali did not just nibble what was dangled before him, he

swallowed. I cringed.

President Ali had to know that, at the very least, he had a captive Middle East audience. When the Middle East comes up, it is usually in the context of oil first and always.

The kings and princes and presidents and prime ministers (and Emirs and Sultans) know all that there is to know about oil. From the dark and draining side, when the Western powers, the Anglo-Saxons of America and Great Britain robbed them blind, and patted them on the head to reassure that they were and are the best friends that the Bedouins and other Arabs, plus the Persians, would ever have. From Twitchell to Trump, from Churchill to Blair, and from Rockefeller to Reagan they all lied, while

they cheated the Middle Easterners and filled up their banks and ensured their people prospered.

My point is that President Ali had a glorious opportunity on Al-Jazeera to skewer Exxon before a friendly audience that knows what it is to be haemorrhaged and drained by predatory Western oil companies.

I n s t e a d o f G u y a n a ’s President Ali emphasizing to his foreign questioner that Guyana has been victimized and pulverized through a vile 2016 oil contract, the only thing that he could utter about oil was what the interviewer put into his mouth.

What Exxon did to Guyana under the PNC was what its forefather SOCAL did to Saudi Arabia. Just like how Michael Pompeo raced

to over here, similarly President Roosevelt made his way to the Saudis and did business with King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud in the name of American oil companies.

Unlike Guyana, the nomadic Arabs were sensitive to their courtship, and how they were not getting what was their due.

We were awed by the visiting Pompeo and our own new sense of importance but the Saudis were too savvy about what their deserts held, and still they got robbed.

If our own President Ali had any clue about what Guyana’s oil means and what he should get from it, at the barest minimum, he would not be so friendly with the likes of Lynch and Routledge. He would not have a Vice President like the one he has, who is more Exxon than Darren Woods himself.

He would not have an EPA that is a billboard for a diseased and paralyzed State institution. He would not

have had the thought nor the space nor the instinct to suppress oil to a secondary part of the Al-Jazeera conversation, but seized the opening to slam the rapacity and injustices of E x x o n i n Guyana.

The sympathy factor would have been incalculable, and with the rise and march of OPEC+, and the implications, Guyana’s 26,000 plus kilometers Stabroek Block represents an oil card that can’t be bettered.

I n s t e a d , G u y a n a ’s President Ali prioritized speaking about eco-tourism and agriculture. Those are good things in themselves, but a poor third cousin, two stepchildren, to oil.

If the clever President intended to indicate a vision of economic diversification, he did not do himself, or

US Mid-term elections: a defining moment for the world

By Sir Ronald Sanders (The writer is Antigua and Barbuda's Ambassador to the United States of America and the Organization of American States. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London and Massey College in the University of Toronto) Democracy is at stake in the country that proclaims itself as the world's bastion of democracy.

That is the judgement of no less a person than the President of the United States of America (US), Joseph Biden Jr. The President made this riveting statement on November 2 in the heart of the nation's capital, Washington, DC. Biden cited several incidents as evidence for his worrying statement. These included an invasion of the home of the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and a savage attack by an intruder on her 82-year-old husband, Paul Pelosi, who was struck in his head with a hammer.

Speaker Pelosi has been the target of far-right supporters of former President Donald Trump, who never formally conceded his overwhelming loss of the November 3, 2020

Presidential elections, and who is being investigated by a select committee of the U.S. House of Representatives for his role in an invasion of Capitol Hill with the intention of stopping the formal acceptance of the elections result. During the invasion, the rioters declared their intention to kill or maim House Representatives, particularly Nancy Pelosi.

President Biden listed a long number of violations of democratic principles and values, including intimidation of early voters for mid-term elections to the Congress on November 8, and death threats to election o ff i c i a l s a n d e l e c t i o n workers in a number of states.

The President described this situation in the following stark terms: “This violence against Democrats, Republicans, and nonpartisan officials just doing their jobs, are the consequence of lies told for power and profit. Lies of conspiracy and malice, lies repeated over and over to generate a cycle of anger, hate, vitriol and even violence”.

Former President Barack Obama was sufficiently stirred by events that he felt constrained to return to the political hustings to express grave concern about "this erosion of just basic civility

and democratic norms”. He warned that, “If the Republican candidates here are successful, Democracy as we know it may not survive in Arizona.”

And, he added, “That's not an exaggeration. That is a fact.”

These circumstances are being played out in the US, not in a country with an immature democracy or a record of disregard for democratic principles of freedom, the rule of law and respect for justice.

Therefore, it is terrifying.

F o r, i f d e m o c r a c y i s overcome in the U.S. in favour of fascism and tyranny, it will quickly spread the world over with troubling consequences.

Apart from the erosion of democracy elsewhere in the w o r l d , a n d t h e encouragement that will be given to politicians with autocratic tendencies, the advent of far-right representatives taking control or significantly influencing, policies and laws created by the U.S. Congress, has consequences for all developing countries.

It is well known, for instance, that Donald Trump and his supporters had little time for developing countries and developed no policies to engage with their development issues. The

description of some, mostly Black States as “shit hole countries”, the manipulation of several of them in the narrow pursuit of his own political agenda, and the rejection of issues and institutions of vital importance to them caused great alarm.

Among the critical issues were the harmful impact of Climate Change and the withdrawal of funding from the World Health Organization. The Trump posture remains, and, if anything, has been strengthened by the Republican candidates who are vying for office on November 8.

Right now, the Democratic Party has control of the Senate in the U.S. Congress only because Vice President Kamala Harris has a casting vote. The Senate is equally divided 50-50 between the Democrats and the Republicans. At the midterm elections on November 8, 12 Democratic-held seats and 23 Republican-held seats are being contested. If the Democrats lose only one of their seats to the Republicans without winning two, the Senate will pass to Republican control.

The situation is worse for the U.S. House of Representatives, all of whose 435 seats are up for grabs.

The Democrats need to win

218 seats to maintain their majority.

They now have 221 to the Republicans 211. It is only in recent days that p o l l s a r e suggesting that the Democratic party could be victorious.

Should the Democratic Party lose control of the Congress, the Republicans would not only frustrate the legislative programme of the Biden administration, but they would also advance the policies that they favour, including selling guns; approving excessive behaviour by the police force; ending a woman's right to choose abortions; closing U.S. borders to immigrants; introduce harsh measures for dealing with refugees to severely reducing programmes to help the poor.

Aid programmes to developing countries will also assume a transactional nature, rather than responding to developmental needs. It is normal in every election for political parties and candidates to hold differing positions. While it should not be acceptable, it has become par for the course that, in their attempt to win votes, parties and candidates spin the truth, exaggerate, and talk down their

Sir Ronald Sanders opponents. However, in the run-up to these mid-terms, candidates of the extreme Republican right wing have been found lying, defaming, and preaching a toxic level of vitriol, including encouraging voter intimidation and tearing down institutions.

President Biden has also pointed out that, “there are candidates running for every level of office in America, for governor, congress, attorney general, secretary of state, who will not commit to accepting the results of the election that they're running in. This is a path to chaos in America”.

In the context of all this, there is good reason to be alarmed about the threats to democracy in the U.S. and, as a consequence, to threats to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law everywhere.

These mid-term elections might well be a defining event not just for the U.S. but for the world in the struggle for supremacy between democracy and fascism.

From page 25 building 21st-century schools at a cost of US$33M. The IDB said the purpose of this component is to, among other things, finalize the update of the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) nonacademic building standards and design a prototype; expand access to primary education through the construction and outfitting of four new schools; rehabilitate, extend, and equip existing schools in the Hinterland regions; and complete audits and design plans for schools to be rehabilitated in the second operation.

That component will also involve several other subcomponents, one of which will be dedicated to finalizing the MoE’s nonacademic standards and design of prototype for urban and peri-urban schools to the tune of US$200,000. This is to ensure that the new construction will follow

modern building standards.

Loan resources will also finance technical assistance to finish updating the MoE’s non-academic standards and develop a prototype for primary schools.

The updates will focus on the identification of spaces required to ensure a safe learning space, aligned with the renewed curriculum, providing architectural guidelines for its construction; specification of comfort conditions (i.e.: ventilation, lighting, noise, room temperature) and required civil works to meet the standards plus modifications to be performed in existing schools; and adaptation and mitigation to climate change, by providing architectural and construction guidelines to ensure the resilience of new construction to extreme weather events (main focus in floods).

In another sub-

component which is focused on expanding access and quality of infrastructure (US$10.2 million), this will finance the construction of four new primary schools following updated nonacademic standards, incorporating climate sustainability and resilience criteria (promoting water and energy efficiency, and using building materials with low embodied energy).

The newly constructed schools will meet increased demand for school spaces and reduce the overcrowding of existing schools in these areas: Recht Door Zee, Tuschen Housing Scheme, Wisroc and Tabatinga.

In addition, the subcomponent will finance the design and supervision consulting services; construction works by qualified contractors; connectivity installations and service for the duration of the project; materials and equipment for the schools

including modular furniture, and the development of maintenance plans for the d i ff e r e n t s y s t e m s a n d subsequent training for head teachers (principal) and teachers about maintenance requirements.

Kaieteur News understands that 1,600 students will benefit from the construction of the four schools.

I n a n o t h e r subcomponent, the IDB said it will focus on the rehabilitation, extensions and outfitting of schools to the tune of US$22M. This will finance the upgrading of existing primary schools in the Hinterland regions (specifically One, Seven, Eight and 9) based on the results of the school mapping exercise using the following selection criteria: enrolment rates, deficient infrastructure conditions, and location in Hinterland region.

The bank said the

projected work includes retrofitting and extension of existing facilities aligned with the updated nonacademic standards, including increased comfort in classrooms, accessibility for persons with disability, and reduced energy and water consumption.

Additionally, the schools will be provided with essential services (water and energy), and connectivity. It is expected that approximately 3,261 students in the Hinterland regions will benefit from the improved learning environment.

I n a n o t h e r subcomponent, the IDB said this will address designs for schools in the Second Operation of the project and is expected to cost US$.6M. Loan resources will finance technical assistance to prepare technical designs for schools that will be included in the second operation. The IDB said the list of schools to

be considered will be developed once the school mapping exercise is completed.

Speaking to the second massive aspect, that is to say, Component Two of the Support for Educational R e c o v e r y a n d Transformation Project, the financial institution said US$4.6M will be dedicated to digital infrastructure to improve the quality of education services in the schools.

It will also cater for the provision of devices and learning materials to vulnerable populations.

The bank said 4,106 students from Grades Two to Six and their 165 teachers will benefit from the digital devices provided.

In addition to the three project components described above, the loan will also support project management, monitoring and evaluation and audits at a cost of US$2.5 million.

“Dealing with school and my business is very challenging; however, I am a warrior, so I try to get a balance. During the pandemic, school was online, so sometimes I would login to classes and listen to my lectures, while I am in the kitchen baking.

The “Bush Hog”

uyana is home to two species of the “bush hog”, the white-lipped peccary and the collared peccary, a piglike animal that is known for its high musky scent. This wild animal is very popular in the country. However, the bush hog’s popularity is not for its interesting characteristics and behaviour patterns, but mostly because its meat is considered to be a delicacy.

For this reason, the “bush hog” is top game, not only in Guyana’s jungle, but also in other tropical rainforests across South and Central America where the animal can be found. In some countries, like Guatemala, measures are being put in place to protect the “bush hog”, because it is a unique and interesting animal that plays a vital role in the ecosystem of their habitats.

The two species found in Guyana, the white-lipped peccary and the collared peccary, are not very different from each other.

Collared Peccaries are grayish black, with a yellow tinge on the cheeks and a white or yellowish collar over the shoulders round to the throat. Males and females are very similar in size and colour. The young are a yellowish brown with a black stripe on the back. The white-lipped peccary, on the other hand, are covered in dark hair except on certain regions, such as the throat, which is cream in colour.

The rest of their characteristics, however, are almost similar. They have a large head, thick neck, long snout and a short tail. Bush hogs also have large sharp canines, and the upper ones point downwards.

These animals travel and feed in large groups or herds that can be up to 300 strong.

Moving around the jungle in large groups gives them an advantage in fending off predators, such as jaguars and other large cats. Females

The collared peccary reproduce litters of two and the gestation period normally lasts some 158 days. Adult peccaries can weigh up to 45 kilograms and can be very vicious and dangerous in protecting their young.

They are considered to be omnivores, feeding on small insects and small frogs, but a large part of their diet consists of fruits, and some plants.

Bush hogs communicate with each other by clicking their teeth, moaning and high pitched screams but their very high musky scent can tell predators and hunters when they are close by. This

scent is produced from a gland that is below their jaws.

Persons have tried to domesticate these wild animals and rear them as pets, but according to one such individual, Leila, it takes a lot of patience to do so.

She recalled rearing one during her childhood days and said it was no easy task.

“Bush hogs are hard to control, the one I had was very stubborn and destructive, he would eat all of our soap, tumble down the pots, and eat all the food, and when it was sleep time, he loved the nice clean bed and

sheets”, Leila recounted.

The bush hog was so stubborn and destructive that Leila was forced to get rid of him. Her experience suggests that bush hogs are not easily domesticated and belong in the wild.

Health Facts Pillars of safe motherhood S

afe motherhood begins before conception with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

P l a n n e d p r e g n a n c y, appropriate prenatal care, prevention of complications when possible, and early and effective treatment of complications when they occur are all essential elements of maternal care.

There are basically five steps in safe motherhood care: preconception care; prenatal or antenatal care; the identification of highrisk pregnancy; clean and safe delivery; and postnatal

or postpartum care.

These five pillars are strategies and interventions aimed at reducing deaths in women of reproductive age and improving family health.

In the past, Guyana has had quite its share of maternal and infant mortality; this started to decline in the past five years. However, the recent reports of maternal deaths and stillbirths at the nation’s premier public hospital have raised concerns about maternal healthcare, once more.

As such, Kaieteur News will attempt to shed some light on safe motherhood

practices for aspirant and expectant mothers. To do this, this publication will highlight some points raised

by Dr. Karen Cummings, a former Junior Minister within the Ministry of Health.

Here is some important information on what is required to achieve a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Preconception Care A c c o r d i n g t o D r.

Cummings, under this banner, family-planning services and counselling for all patients – male, female, single or married – are provided.

During this period, she

said people are prepared mentally for parenthood and are educated about what to expect when they become parents.

The doctor explained that Sexually Transmitted Infections are discussed and tests for the same offered.

The importance of waiting for specific timing for childbearing is explained, along with the value of appropriate spacing between pregnancies.

Exclusive breastfeeding is also discussed with both males and females. All the basic sexual and reproductive rights are explained.

Antenatal care A c c o r d i n g t o D r.

Cummings, based on recommendations made by t h e Wo r l d H e a l t h Organisation (WHO), a pregnant mother must have at least four (4) antenatal visits. This step is crucial to a safe pregnancy and delivery.

In addition, she must be able to join a clinic, at least, before the first 12 weeks.

D u r i n g t h e p a t i e n t ’s assessment at the health f a c i l i t y, t h e m e d i c a l personnel should be able to

recomme nded that a n ultrasound be done preferably in the first trimester, or at least before the 20th week of pregnancy.

Identification and management of high-risk pregnancies The former Junior Minister of Health noted that high risk is used to describe those patients who are expected to have a complicated pregnancy due to a health problem with either the mother or child.

Such patients need to be seen by an Obstetrician throughout their antenatal care. Once diagnosed, these patients are referred to a specialist as early as possible. Some of the risk factors that influence highrisk pregnancies are as follows: age 18 —35 years old, lifestyle (use of drugs and alcohol, smoking, obesity), existing health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, sickle cell, anemia) and conditions of pregnancy (twins, malformations, placenta previa, etc.).

Clean and safe delivery Dr. Cummings noted that all our health care facilities throughout Guyana where deliveries are done should have a skilled birth attendant present.

She said the presence of this person helps to ensure the safety of the mother and the neonate. The healthcare facility should have systems in place in the event of an emergency. All healthcare workers should be able to recognise obstetric emergencies and call for immediate help.

The doctor explained that everyone, including Community Health Workers (CHWs), needs to be reevaluated every two years to ensure their skills are evaluated and upgraded.

She said, “For the mother, it is important that the signs of labour be explained to her. These signs include regular contractions, rupture of membranes (water bag bursting) and “show,” which is a bloody discharge on the p a t i e n t ’s underwear.”

Postnatal care According to Dr. Cummings, before discharge from the health facility, the mother must be aware of alarm signs which include fever, smelly vaginal discharge, heavy bleeding, and pain in the breasts. Even after the mother has had a safe delivery, she is asked to do a follow-up visit a week after the birth to ensure her safety and well-being.

I n i t i a t i o n o f breastfeeding is highly recommended for all new mothers at all health facilities, except if medical conditions prevent this a c t i v i t y. E x c l u s i v e breastfeeding is promoted for all infants.

Sunshine Sunshine is a girl.

Always barefoot, with long brown hair stretching down her back; highlighted with the colours of autumn: rich golds and fiery reds.

Her slanted cat eyes are strikingly deep purple. She glows with happiness and adventure; this is what makes her beautiful, shining from the inside out.

It's late afternoon in the Australian bush. Sunshine swings her basket as she skips past the familiar gumtrees; which are covered in long green strands of leaves softly flowing in the wind, like hair. Gentle dusk light is filtering through the trees and lighting up the grass like a fluorescent carpet.

Sunshine promised her best friends they would have a feast of all their favourite foods at sunset.

Sunshine bounces and skips through the bush and greets nature as it's beginning to wind down.

Good afternoon to the magpies who are starting to sing, G'day to the grumbling wombat beginning to wake up and Hello to Mr. Moon, beginning to peek through the crisp blue sky.

Sunshine arrives at her favourite clearing just as the sun is beginning to set and unpacks her food onto a big, cracked tree stump. A blueberry pie, carrot and pine nut noodles, sweet rhubarb brownies, pumpkin rice with fluffy cream and strawberry, orange and mint juice. Sunshine sits down

sees an Echidna, but instead of spikes, she is covered in fluffy cloud.

The sky starts to turn pink, making the clouds look like cotton candy, then turning a soft violet. Her friends start to hop, scuttle and waddle home with full bellies and smiles on their little faces. Sunshine feels an immense happiness wash over her, sending her into a deep slumber.

Sunshine opens her eyes and sees that shining brightly like a giant glowing cream pie. Her surroundings have changed; everything is tinted a periwinkle blue and there are dark shadows swaying around her. The soft light from the moon and stars gently bathe her skin in light. She hears crickets chirping and the flutter of birds who are finding their way to bed.

The smell of jasmine and honeysuckle hangs softly in the air, pulling Sunshine out of her sleep. She slowly rises, stretching like a long lanky cat, and packs up her basket.

and think nothing about building a foundation for the future.

You will do so much better than these by making deliberate attempts to build this sense of purpose in your life. Here are four strategies which you may use to motivate yourself to do better:1. Have great desires or aims for your life, and express them in concrete terms as goals.

2. Build faith and confidence in your own ability to succeed.

3. Clarify your visions

and dreams. Do not keep your goals vague, but try to define them in specific ways.

4. Develop concrete plans on what you will need to do to accomplish your goals.

In the coming issues we will be developing on each of these strategies so that you may put them to work in developing your sense of purpose in such a way that the momentum of your life will be sustained, no matter how rough the path you want to follow will become.

Main Street buzzing with customers in search of the perfect piece for Emancipation Day celebrations back July this year.

The avenue came to life, bursting with colours and flavour in September, as a Regional Food Festival kicked off as part of Guyana's festivities for Cricket Carnival.

Main Street is a must-visit when in the capital city

By Davina Bagot Built since the 1890's, Guyana's Main Street is a key avenue in the Capital city of Georgetown.

Research shows that this street, when first constructed in 1897, was originally named the 'Queen Victoria Promenade' by the then Mayor and Town Council.

This street, formerly a walkway, was also the venue for Queen Elizabeth's coronation in June 1953. But even before this development took place, this newspaper learnt that Main Street was actually a canal where citizens would frequently take a swim.

In the last century, the National Library, Bank of Guyana, the Walter Roth Museum, the Prime Minister's residence and War Memorial were added to the avenue. Fast forward to today, several nightspots, restaurants and other businesses have joined Main Street. It has been said that Main Street got its name since it is a key avenue that connects to several others in Georgetown.

The parallel road can be found between Water and Carmichael Streets. It is bordered by Church Street and Lamaha Street.

Main Street over the years have been a major attraction to locals, as very often, the avenue comes to life with a rainbow of colourful art pieces, cultural clothing and skilfully made jewellery, along with delicious Guyanese food and beverages. If the colours don't manage to draw your attention, the fragrance of a just-off-the-fire Guyanese cookup just might!

Besides these usual attractions, Main Street is also used as a main route for parades and other awareness walks that have become more popular in recent days.

For instance, each year Courts Guyana hosts its Christmas parade and 'Light up' where thousands of children and adults line the roadways to see Santa Claus. The

fun doesn't end there as 'seasonal junkies' await the minute the trees light up along the avenue.

Additionally, and though it has not been held for a few years due to the global Covid-19 pandemic,

Main Street is also popularly known for Guyana's event of the year 'Big Lime'. This was usually

hosted on December 26 each year and was the perfect family outing for those who were simply bored of being home for the protracted holiday season.

Despite the avenue being a hotspot during the Christmas season, it remains the perfect spot for a romantic evening walk throughout the year, though it may not be buzzing with these exciting experiences that no doubt captivate both locals and tourists.

In fact, even singles enjoy the

breathtaking beauty of the avenue at nights.

It would also not be strange to see newlyweds posing for the camera along Main Street due to the serene atmosphere there, or fitness enthusiasts taking a jog in the afternoons. Hundreds of pedestrians use the avenue each day on their commute to or from work or even school.

She is a staunch supporter of women’s rights and equality of the sexes.

Her vibrant personality, strong work ethic, and unwavering moral convictions make her role as a feminist even more convincing as she continues to make her mark in corporate Guyana, leaving a blueprint for other women who desire to function in business leadership roles, to follow.

Over the years, the top ANSA McAL Executive earned quite a few coveted titles one of which includes being named amongst the first female Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in corporate Guyana. As the Country Head of the ANSA McAL Group of Companies in Guyana, she now has oversight for four companies fully functioning— ANSA Mc AL Trading Limited, I Radio, ANSA Motors Guyana, and Guyana Breweries Inc. Yet, the couple married in 1951 and their forbidden love story produced four children of which Ms. Harper is the third child. Given her father’s work in the Royal Air Force, Harper said the family moved around a lot.

She revealed, “We were stationed all over England, at different bases. He had a stint in Germany, which is where I was born and we were also stationed in Malta, when I was 9. Restaurant: A Culinary dream realized

oming from a family where both parents expressed their love for cooking, it became a life-long dream of Zalena Boodhoo to own and operate a restaurant.

Today, 62-year-old Zalena is a wife, mother of four, and the proprietor of ‘Country Spice Kitchen,’ a restaurant that offers a fusion of Guyanese and International cuisine.

In April 2019, Boodhoo officially opened the doors to her restaurant. Country Spice Kitchen is located in Parika, East Bank Essequibo, above Boodhoo’s General Store. The restaurant is open Sunday to Sunday from 07:00 hours to 18:00hours.

Not only do they serve breakfast, lunch and early dinner but also offer catering services for parties, weddings, business events and any other gathering.

Some of restaurant’s popular dishes are: Alfredo pasta, spaghetti and meat ball, duck/ chicken curry, vegetable rice, cream potato, and the baked chicken.

During an interview, Zalena said, “We are constantly innovating on our menu in response to seasonal fresh ingredients, holidays, and festivals. Our plans are to continue growing and maybe open a second branch in Georgetown.”

“From early childhood, my love of cooking and baking found me in the kitchen with my parents helping and learning their respective secrets. Yes, both my mom and dad were amazing cooks, and each had their individual specialty. Mom was the curry queen and dad the cook-up and pepperpot king,” she said.

Since then, Zalena knew that someday, she would have her own restaurant. However, she stated dreams don’t always come through overnight.

According to her, being married with four children, she was forced to migrate when crime threatened their safety. While in another country, she explained that being a full-time mother became her job and the idea of starting her own restaurant became a distant memory.

Nevertheless, her love for cooking remained and grew even stronger over the years.

“My kitchen was the experimentation ground for the creative dishes to eventually come. I copied, modified, and invented recipes. My children and their friends were my tasters. The reviews were so good, they kept coming back for more and bringing others.

When friends and family visited, I would treat their taste buds to my specialties, and they loved it,” Zaleena said. Soon, she said many persons encouraged her to start a business, if not a restaurant, a catering business. She said the encouragement she received caused, “That childhood dream to nag at me more than ever.”

As faith would have it, Zalena later visited Guyana and that’s when she decided to make it permanent, since her children were now all grown and independent.

While back in her homeland, Zalena then immediately began working on making her dream come through.

“I looked around me and realized that Parika was now a bustling town with so many businesses, so many

people needing food.

Excitement bubbled inside me.”

The business owner shared that it is never too late to make your dreams come through. She added, “Today, I am 62 and the last three years, have been a time in my life when I can fuel my passion and creativity. Building my business from idea to success is the most rewarding feeling. It has not been all clear sailing. I have had to work long hours and the trying times sometimes made me want to quit.”

When the pandemic struck like many other businesses, Zaleena had to reduce her staff load and had even considered closing her doors permanently. However, she explained that she could not abandon her business, so she prioritized and today her sacrifice has paid off.

“I a m very conten ted with what I have been able to achieve. But, I could not have made my dream and vision a reality without my husband Awad Boodhoo, my four children, Anthony, Alesia, Felicia and Sanjay, and my extended family, too many to mention. But I must single out my mother who always believed in and encouraged me to reach for the stars. Of course, hers and my father’s flavours run through everything we cook,” Zaleena added. She also thanked her dedicated and hardworking staff who ensure they maintain quality food to serve to t he customers. “Finally, without blessing and guidance of the Almighty, none of this would be possible. I am therefore humble in my blessings,” Zalena added.

Twenty-eight-year-old Williams, who is currently employed at the National Insurance Scheme, Research & Planning Department as a statistical clerk, in a recent interview with this magazine said arts and crafts was always something he was very passionate about. Because of this, he equipped himself with an extensive knowledge of the Creative Arts, Business and Economics, and Effective Communication skills.

He related that what had inspired him to start this business venture was the love for the creative arts and nature. “A keen eye for intricate and intimate details and components of a thing, has led me in the ultimate form of purpose and expression. I always been hustling, even in school, I would often buy these bracelets and girls would take them from me with some sweet smiles. I got tired and said, “if you like it more than me, you can pay for it”, and I kept that mentality. Henceforth, I dived into bead craft even though I had not much clue about it, the skills came and I honed them by practice and repetition,” he explained.

Proud of the venture he has created, the young man said he would not have done it without the tremendous support he received from his mother and wife. “They always encourage me to refine my art to the best of my abilities and stronger reminders to never give up on my dreams. I am the epitome of zeal. The other close family and friends have supported me along the journey also,” he stated.

According to the young entrepreneur, though business is booming right now, in the past, it certainly had its fair share of challenges.

Some challenges he said it faced were lack of stocks. He explained that there are not many businesses that supply a vast amount of raw materials for his business, and oftentimes customers look for variety.

“After researching a bit and somewhat of seasoned online shopper, I had to source maybe 40-50% of the stock from overseas since I did not want my business to fail.

Oftentimes, customers would order items and forget to collect, or even disregard the order which would lead to a loss of materials and time,” he added.

Another challenge he has dealt with is time management. With being employed, sometimes customers’ demands would take away his time. As a result of this, he said he has incorporated mobile money Guyana (MMG) and introduced it to his customers

and in the policy of his business. “This helps to manage my time and resources well when taking orders and also supplying,” he mentioned.

As it relates to the pandemic, Williams shared that it gave him some time to think and reposition the business from a better angle.

In taking this approach, when asked what his long-term goals with the business are, he shared that he intends to be dynamic, while maintaining and elevating a business community that encourages networking between satisfied customers, other creative individuals and business owners.

“The vision is to reshape society’s view of the creative arts and culture, so that they may see the universe up close. Essentially my goal is to create a ‘Little Africa’ where the freedom to manufacture the beads and materials we use to create art and forms of jewellery, thereby molding the minds of the future in the royalty of arts, craft and creation in the whole,” he pointed out.

Ready to show the world his craft, when asked what responsibility he thinks entrepreneurs have in society, he mentioned “Young entrepreneurs play a very key and vital role in society, that of building and stabilizing of economy and society.”

He added also that entrepreneurs, who embrace the quality of integrity in society,

will contribute to a greater nation than we have ever seen.

Williams noted that what can boost small businesses locally is for entrepreneurs to provide customers with exceptional artistic and creative services, while maintaining the highest levels of integrity and professionalism.

He concluded, “Establish an open environment that encourages individuality while promoting trust and cohesion amongst management, staff and the organization’s customers.”

RELOCATING TO GUYANA The steady relocation of the family finally ended when her father decided to take early retirement when she was 15 years old.

A c c o r d i n g t o H a r p e r, arriving in Guyana for the first time was a bit of a culture shock, but the experience of seeing so many people who looked like her gave her ease.

She counts attending Bishops High School, adapting to warm weather, outdoor experiences, and traveling to the interior (with her father who was working as a radio engineer and putting up radio equipment at airstrips all over the country) among her fondest memories. For the young Harper, Guyana’s interior

was a sight to behold; it was as she described it “breathtaking.”

While at school, the young Harper attained good grades, as she admits, “I wasn’t at the top of my class but I did well and passed all my exams’.” Harper did well in English, because she loved to read. She also excelled in Geography

because she was always looking at maps just to see where her father was to be stationed next. She explained that while moving around made her adaptable, it affected her academics in an adverse way.

For example, she said, “I was doing Modern Math at the Grammar school in Wiltshire [England] prior to Bishops but when we moved, it switched again to traditional Math. That would have been the 3rd time I had to switch in five years.”

Nevertheless, Harper admits that the study ethic in

Guyana was far superior to the UK and the teachers were awesome. In fact she exclaimed, “My teacher, Miss Dennison was solely responsible for me passing Math period!”

INT’L STUDIES By the time she was 18years-old, Mr. Harper had already planned for his daughter to attend an

international college or university in the UK. But the young Harper didn’t apply to school straight away. She decided to work a little, gaining clerical employment, in an office for Lister Engines while she thought about the career path she really wanted.

She had envisaged taking up roles in journalism and copywriting for an advertising company but was diverted by “some friends who had the crazy idea of becoming an au pair (caregiver) for a while.

Back then, she attempted

to learn French and her work took her to Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the Center of the European common market. She recalled that it was fun and thankfully safe as she was with a family of four, who was of German and Hungarian descent, and whose Jewish parents had fled the war and went to Brazil.

“The father spoke seven languages, the mother spoke five and the kids spoke three and there was I struggling with French! This only lasted for five months and I returned to England ready for further education and a career,” she disclosed. Passionate about business and marketing, Harper got into a mediocre college in Luton, Bedfordshire, and started her tertiary education.

A c c o r d i n g t o h e r, “Marketing was not a wellknown discipline in those days…but I loved it …In fact, my thesis was how did governments and companies advertise during the postwar period, with shortages that caused substitutions of products that were often not liked by the general populace.”

Armed with a degree, Harper spent a year searching for suitable employment in the UK. She vaguely connected with any work to do with marketing, merchandising, and promotions.

RETURN HOME After attending dozens of interviews with no success, Harper’s dad sent her a ticket to return to Guyana for a holiday and to help her sister who had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl.

This proved to be the best decision as within two weeks of returning home, Harper had three job offers. She accepted the one that allowed her to travel and use her marketing skills.

More than 15 years and four companies later, sitting at the helm of ANSA Mc AL, Ms. Harper has never regretted the decision. Ms. Harper’s present duties include mostly oversight, governance, and guidance, a bit of real estate Human Resource assistance, and communications.

She noted that while her recent oversight of the new

To this end, Harper stated while she has awards for being the most sustained Profit Before Tax (PBT) contributor in the ANSA Group in 2012 – a noteworthy achievement, her most treasured acknowledgment was being credited in the company for having the most engaged, loyal and happy employees for many years. In fact, Harper said that her focus has shifted over time from developing market strategies to developing people.

OTHER PASSIONS Outside her work with corporate Guyana, Ms. Harper has played her part through Ansa McAL and on a personal level in several projects initiated by the Rotary club, Help, and Shelter, Mothers in Black, several Cancer Awareness groups, and other valued non-profits.

She revealed “I have been a Rotarian for almost 30 years…I have been privileged to be the President of the Rotary Club of D e m e r a r a … We h a v e touched the lives of people in the far corners of this country and although I am not active in my club as much now …”

She continued, “I believe that you have achieved nothing if you don’t give

back your time, your energy, your compassion, and your wealth. So whether it is cancer survivors or victims of abuse…flood victims or those who have lost a loved one on our roads…pick your organization or your cause and just get it done.”

Besides her work and charitable efforts, Ms. Harper loves all things sports.

She told Kaieteur News that her daughter has been, is, and will always be her pride and joy. She said, “As a single mother…Chelsea Kalsatos nee Fung who makes me proud every day of her life… My sister, Denise Dias, who is always in my corner, and the wonderful family and friends who are family with different names,” Ms. Harper says that life has been extremely good to her so she can never forget to pay it forward. Her goal now is to be kinder, to mentor, and to look out for the guy who just can’t catch a break. She advises her fellow entrepreneurs to do the same. She urges entrepreneurs and those in positions who can employ people to give their team a sense of family, recognize exceptional achievement, encourage selfimprovement, and value individual and team effort.

She added that, “In this, you have a recipe for continued success for your company and yourself.

Success is not possible without a team…and without a team, it isn’t even worth it,” Her best advice, however, is to the ambitious young female professionals whose desire is to climb to the top. Ms. Harper encourages them as they journey there, “to hold on to your values, your integrity, and your fighting spirit.”

Anxiety can lead to fear of having physical illness, result in many unnecessary laboratory investigations

A

nxiety disorders may often be mistaken for physical illnesses because of the symptoms experienced.

Stress from the brain can cause an increase in gastric acidity, worsening of acne, changes in the menstrual cycle, palpitation and shortness of breath, numbing and tingling in different areas

of the body among other distressing feelings.

Unfortunately, many patients are put through a large number of laboratory tests including endoscopy and CT scans, when a good medical interview would point to the cause of the physical symptom, being anxiety.

After spending much time and money, the patient is usually cleared of any serious physical problem and finally a diagnosis of anxiety is considered. This practice leads to the making of the

diagnosis by a process of extensive and expensive testing rather than taking a

good medical history and performing a good physical examination.

Some physical disorders can lead to anxiety or panic attacks.

These include prescription and nonprescription drug use, hyperthyroidism, cardiac and respiratory conditions. If there are signs of a physical illness, appropriate testing would confirm the cause.

However in most cases, there is no underlying physical cause and the trigger to the anxiety is fear which has its origin in the unconscious. If the patient experiences a

p anic attack, this further reinforces the belief that the cause is physical rather than emotional.

Motorcyclist succumbs Cops in beef scandal on open arrest after accident with canter truck at Albion

The four patrol ranks caught by their Commander on October 18 last with suspected stolen beef in their pick-up are on open arrest.

According to Section 10 of the Police (Discipline) Act Chapter 17:01 when any member of the Force is placed under open arrest, he shall be deprived of all privileges and leave until the case is disposed of and he shall attend all parades and do duty as required.

The patrol ranks were found with the meat in their possession at Number 19 Village, Corentyne Berbice,

Region Six by police commander, Shivpersaud Bacchus. Speaking with the media on Thursday, Bacchus said that the ranks “were placed on open arrest, and are performing duties at the Force's Tactical Service Unit (TSU)”.

H e s a i d t h a t investigations are still ongoing into the allegations that they stole meat from a dead cow and has committed to updating the media on the outcome of the investigation.

The ranks were nabbed with the beef in the tray of

the Force's pick-up after a dead cow disappeared from an accident scene at Number 19 Village.

Kaieteur News was informed that the accident occurred along the No.19 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice around 01:00hrs on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

The accident involved a cow and a minibus driven by Aziz Goolmohamed, of Kilcoy/Chesney, Corentyne, Berbice.

A traffic rank arrived at the scene and took the necessary information from the minibus driver and he

was reportedly advised to remove the branded section of the cow skin.

Goolmohamed was told to take it with him to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and make a statement.

The traffic rank left and shortly after, the patrol ranks arrived in one of the Force's vehicles bearing licence

plate number PAB 3148.

Goolmohamed and his relatives were questioned again by the ranks and they informed that the cow was hit by Goolmohamed.

The driver and his relatives reportedly observed one of the patrol ranks and some other persons cutting the cow with a cutlass. Trusting the patrol

ranks, Goolmohamed and his relatives left the scene and their minibus behind to make a report to the police station with the branded part of the cow skin but when they returned, the dead cow was missing and only some internal organs were found close by.Coincidentally, Commander Bacchus, (Continued on page 60)

Reg. 10 steadily becoming the ultimate tourism destination

or decades, the town of Linden was well known for being the home of bauxite. That era would change when major bauxite producing fields became privatized, thus leaving hundreds of residents without a job.

The town was also known as one of the more economically unstable ones, with a high unemployment rate, lack of investment and being highly dependent on agricultural produce. Over the last five years, however, efforts to diversify the economy of Linden are being made by various stakeholders since it is clear that they cannot continue to solely depend on downsized bauxite operations for a main income.

One of the sectors that is aggressively being sought out for diversification, is the tourism sector. Today, Linden is no longer dubbed a mining town, but a destination town.

This transition to a destination town was heightened following a media frenzy towards the Kara Kara Blue Lakes.

These blue lakes are indigenous to Region 10 as a result of bauxite mining.

Their novelty lies in the absence of dark sediments on the lake bed, which makes pronounced, the reflection of the sky. Its potential for aqua-tourism activities are now exploited and the construction of a facility is being explored at the level of central government.

Not only is the town's tourism potential being recognized locally, but

internationally, as well.

Linden was categorised as a prospective World Tourism Destination by former United Nations SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-Moon at a World Tourism Summit in Chonqing, China in 2018.

At the recently held regatta in Linden, His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali, said that the prime tourism location of the Kara Kara Blue Lakes, will be developed into an eco-resort since it has all the products for such development.

Not only does Region 10 has a plethora of natural tourism products but it also has several advantages that will enable the sector to advance.

Fear of dying is another major worry and this can persist leading to a fear of another attack. Panic attacks or fear of having another

attack which continues for longer than a month will lead to panic disorder. This disorder also often has the affected person searching for a physical reason and may lead to multiple doctor visits with multiple tests.

Minor alterations in laboratory results can cause the patient to believe that an undetected medical condition is present and another round of testing and doctor visits ensues.

Anxiety and panic attacks are treated very effectively with modern non-addictive

short acting medications and if done with good patient education and therapy should prevent anxiety from progressing to a panic disorder or for the patient to become fixated that a rare medical disorder is present, which the doctor was unable to detect. It then becomes more difficult for the physician or therapist to change the patient's belief system that the cause of the stomach upset or other physical problems is in the brain and not because of some disease in the body.

One of the untapped communities is Malali, which is located 38 miles up the Upper Demerara River.

It is a beautiful block of land, nestled neatly between rugged vegetation and is occupied by mostly hospitable Indigenous people.

Its attractions include a pristine beach, and picturesque scenery that can be enjoyed in solitude.

Making significant strides to develop the sector is a priority for the Region 10 tourism committee that is being chaired by Member of Parliament Devin Sears.

Over 500 tourists visit Linden weekly to partake in

aqua and eco-tourism activities. Region 10, he said, has a lot of tourism products to be exploited and the development of the sector can create more than 20,000 jobs, something that is urgently needed.

At the launch of tourism month, 2022, Sears outlined several projects the committee is currently working on to boost tourism within the region.

These include the construction of an Eco Lodge at Rockstone, Greatfalls, Calcuni and Kurupukari, the establishment of village tourism committees, and a buy-local tourism shop.

The committee is currently executing over 30 activities for tourism month.

Some of the highlights on the calendar are several sporting events, overnight camping at Rockstone, Chutney on the Beach at Coomacka, publication of Linden's tourist site map, Tacama Savannah Safari, Small Business Exposition, and a Street Food and Rum Festival.

Public Works Ministry looking to spend $1.8B to upgrade 8 public and main access roads

ontinuing with the upgrading of roads across the country, the Ministry of Public Works is looking to rehabilitate another set of public and main access roads, at an estimated cost of $1,881,767,897.

During a recent opening of tenders at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, it was not revealed which roads will be upgraded, but that the Ministry’s project is divided into eight lots (Lot16 to 23).

According to the minutes posted by the NPTAB, works at lot 16 is estimated at $374,537,350; works at Lot17 is estimated at $374,537,350; works at Lot18 is pegged at $315,546,250, works at

Lot19 is estimated at $203,110,100, works at Lot20 is estimated at $299,905,900; road works at Lot21 is estimated at $104,966,043; works at Lot22 is estimated at $104,329,754; while works at Lot23 is to cost some $104,835,150.

For the Ministry’s projects, a total of 13 contractors have applied to execute the works.

As previously reported, the Public Works Ministry was allocated $15.2 billion from this year’s budget to facilitate the construction and rehabilitation of urban and community roads across the country.

The expectations are similar when standards are applied for other local food and food grade products prepared by our numerous restaurants a n d f a s t - f o o d establishments.

Similarly, increased visits to our shores continues to push the demand for quality housing and accommodation. When quality products are utilized in construction, furnishing, landscaping, electrical installation, plumbing etc. tourists’ comfort, and reliability of installations and fittings are assured.

Meanwhile, for tourism standards, the GNBS continues to promote what’s available to the sector to meet and exceed tourist and user expectations. These standards include the standard for Bed and Breakfast facilities (GYS 514:2016), which can be implemented by homeowners looking to benefit financially from extra rooms they have available. According to the report, heavy rainfall and related occurrences of flooding, sea level rise, and storm surges, especially in coastal areas are expected in Guyana.

“Guyana’s contribution to climate change is expected to increase due to the oil and gas discovery, which could ultimately hinder growth and development efforts in the country if left unchecked,” the global institution pointed out.

During the production of oil and gas harmful toxins are released into the atmosphere which contributes to climate change.

The World Bank was keen to note that, “Guyana’s coastal plain strip lies below the mean high tide mark and has historically suffered flooding from both Atlantic storm surges and heavy rains.”

“Research shows that the impact of rising sea levels and intensified storm surges in Guyana would be among the greatest in the world, exposing 100 percent of the country’s coastal agriculture and 66.4 percent of coastal urban areas to flooding and coastal erosion, with potential GDP losses projected to exceed 46.4 percent,” the World Bank said.

Notwithstanding, the financial institution noted that the country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 outlines substantial measures to support green resilient growth, including increased protection for the standing forests and investments in renewable energy sources such as hydropower and solar energy.

Guyanese Environmental Lawyer, Melinda Janki, has been highlighting the environmental harm being done

by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) commonly referred to as ExxonMobil Guyana, the operator of the Stabroek Block, since the start up of oil production in 2019.

On numerous occasions she called for the oil company’s ‘dangerous’ operations to be shut down, pending an independent international and credible investigation into their activities.

She believes, “There should be an independent international, credible investigation into those operations and it should only be restarted if it makes sense and it is at that point, in a discussion for restarting, that the people of this country can say well this is what we want instead.”

Janki has taken ExxonMobil to court over matters relating to the safety of its operations. The Lawyer has challenged the excessive burning of natural gas offshore Guyana by the oil company. More recently, she moved to the courts to question the validity of the Liza One Environmental Permit renewal – arguing that insurance provisions were not complied with.

While these two matters are still before the courts, Janki was successful in litigation against the oil company in 2020. The Lawyer had moved to the court to reduce the oil company’s environmental permit from 20+ years to five, the correct time as prescribed by law.

New PSA a distraction from calls to renegotiate lopsided Stabroek Block dealAFC The new terms that have been announced for upcoming oil blocks in Guyana’s rich Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), is nothing short of an attempt by the PPP Government to distract from the calls of the public to renegotiate the Stabroek Block deal, where oil giant, ExxonMobil has already discovered more than 11 billion barrels of oil since 2015.

This is according to Dr. Vincent Adams, a member of the Alliance For Change (AFC) party. During its weekly Press Conference yesterday, Dr. Adams in an invited comment pleaded that the public do not fall prey to the effort being made to quiet the calls for a renegotiation.

In fact he explained that, the “political shenanigan” is three fold with its first objective being to distract from the pressures of pulling Exxon to the table. Secondly, he explained that this move is clearly geared at ensuring the American oil company continues to reap major profits, while the third goal of the party is to protect the contracts already secured for its friends and family members under that deal.

“First it’s a blatant attempt to distract from the renegotiations pressure- the pressure that they are being beaten over the head with...the second objective which is also political is to protect Exxon’s entrenched position.

There’s no question that this here is to protect Exxon, and then of course it is to protect the interest of friends and family, who are already entrenched in these big contracts that have been given away,” the former Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted.

In doing so however, he pointed out that the Government is allowing “disadvantage” and “unfair treatment” to new investors, which could potentially include Guyanese, while the giant- ExxonMobilwould be allowed to enjoy the terms included in the existing lopsided deal that ensures massive profits to its shareholders.

Dr. Adams argued, “So here you are now with the leffleff that these smaller contracts, including Guyanese who would be getting an opportunity to bid -they are going to be shut out. They are

going to be basically priced out of the market with this gimmick...just to get away from the fundamental business and moral principles that is expected of every democratic society and country which is to have open, free and fair competition.”

On Thursday, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo held a Press Briefing where it was announced that new Production Sharing Agreements (PSAs) to be entered into with any new oil company would feature a 10 percent royalty rate, 10 percent corporation tax and ring-fencing provision. Notably, companies preparing to participate in Guyana’s offshore bid round this year-end, for the 14 available oil blocks, will be subjected to these terms should hydrocarbons be discovered in those fields.

In making the announcement, the VP also clarified that the 14 blocks range from about 1000 square kilometres to 3000 square kilometres, with the majority of them being close to 2000 square kilometers.

Meanwhile, the Stabroek Block that covers approximately 26,800 square kilometres and is operated by Exxon and its partners- Hess and CNOOC- remains bound to a separate arrangement in which it pays a mere two percent royalty, no taxes and also recovers expenses from multiple projects from the revenue earned by development, in the absence of ring-fencing provisions.

It must also be noted that Exxon is allowed to deduct 75 percent of costs from Guyana’s earnings upfront to cover its expenses while the new PSA would cap cost recovery at 65 percent of earnings annually.

To this end, the AFC has urged that the Government ‘put politics aside’ and team up with the Opposition in seeking a renegotiation of the 2016 Exxon contract.

Dr. Adams encouraged, “Let both the Opposition and the party in power come together, put together a team of knowledgeable experts to come up with what’s best for the country of Guyana and spread it across.”

He is adamant that one PSA must govern past and future contractors.

He believes, “that would be fair, that would be setting a level playing field and that’s where we have to be going so don’t come up with these gimmicks.”

From 2017 to now an average of 100 people in Guyana are being killed each year by vehicular accidents. Despite efforts by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to reduce the rate of fatal accidents in the country, they continue to occur at an alarming rate.

This year isn’t over but, according to stats provided by the Force, an average of seven fatal accidents have been taking place each month.

Speaking at Wednesday’s Launch of Road Safety Month 2022 in New Amsterdam Berbice, Region Six, Traffic Chief, Dennis Stephen, said that there have been 80 fatal accidents for the year so far and it has resulted in 87 deaths.

Most of these fatalities, he said, were caused by errant drivers.

His exact words were, “When we

A significant percentage, according to Chief Stephen, was directly linked to drunk driving and speeding.

Based on the stats he provided, it is quite evident that errant drivers and road users are really the ones to be blamed for causing the deaths of 100 people each year.

Stats this year alone show that some 5,777 drivers were caught driving drunk while another 18,216 were found speeding.

Additionally, another 4,292 drivers were caught jumping traffic lights. These large

numbers speak volume and the number of photos and cellphone recorded videos posted on the various social media platforms to depict the recklessness of these errant drivers are also quite staggering.

The Force has been playing its part to enforce traffic laws and spread awareness about the dangers of disobeying them, but if drivers continue to be irresponsible on the roadways then more people will continue to

Killed in an accident caused by errant driver, Nigel Cush die and the numbers will definitely increase.

Just last month, the media reported that a truck driver, Aslom Masmood was jailed five years for causing the death of a businessman, Nigel Cush.

Masmood had admitted to court that he had caused the accident because of his irresponsible decision to jump a traffic light on September 15, 2022, at the junction of Cemetery Road and Mandela Avenue. Cush was heading home in his Toyota Rav 4 after a hard day’s work at his business place. He approached Mandela Avenue from Cemetery Road and the traffic light at his end was green.

He obeyed the signal to go and decided to

make a turn onto Mandela Avenue but then all of a sudden tragedy struck. Masmood’s speeding truck bulldozed his vehicle into a light pole at the junction crushing him (Cush) to death instantly.

Masmood has been prosecuted for the man’s death, but it could have been avoided if he was responsible enough to obey a basic traffic rule.

Not only would he have been a free man, but a grieving wife would not have been forced to become a single parent and her children would not have been fatherless.

Masmood’s story is not the only tragedy that has occurred recently because of irresponsible drivers.

On Saturday October 22 last, a drunk driver, Jermaine Lewis, 28, allegedly caused the death of his friend, 19-year-old Tiffany Forde after he lost control of his car along the Coomacka Mines Road, Region 10.

Forde was a passenger in Lewis’s car and was seated in the front seat beside him.

According to reports, he was dropping home the young woman along with another friend seated in the back seat.

According to police, the car was speeding along the road when the man lost control of the vehicle causing it to flip several times before coming to a halt.

Forde was killed and never made it home to her family. Police tested the driver and the result proved that he was driving under the influence.

Some might argue that it was just an accident, but a l c o h o l a l t e r s o n e ’s judgment to make accurate decisions. Forde’s life could probably have been saved if the driver did not have alcohol in his system.

These two reports are about innocent victims, who perished. But drivers also put their own lives at risk by not obeying the rules.

Even motorcyclists are using the road recklessly and have been putting their lives at risk by not wearing a helmet.

No suspension for Dharamlall over 'dildo' remark...says Minister already apologized

Opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Catherine Hughes, was on Thursday informed by the National Assembly, that her Motion submitted to suspend Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall over his 'dildo' remark allegedly hurled at another female Opposition MP- has been disallowed, given that the government Minister has already apologized for his words.

Hughes' Motion was submitted in February.

In a correspondence seen by this newspaper and dated November 3, 2022, Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs, explained on behalf of the Speaker, Manzoor Nadir, that the matter was addressed the same day it occurred.

“His Honour has also asked me to remind you that the matter was dealt with at the same Sitting. After the words were spoken, His Honour suspended the Sitting, called the Hon. Nigel Dharamlall to his chamber

and asked him to withdraw the unparliamentary remarks,” Isaacs said apologising for his late response to Hughes.

The Clerk in his correspondence to Hughes said that upon the resumption of the Sitting, Dharamlall withdrew his statement.

The Minister told the House, "Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Good evening to everyone. Earlier today, this House had some issues which we believe became very heated. I would like to indicate to you, Mr. Speaker, that if I had said anything that was misconstrued, it was not my intention to make those statements to that effect, and, there were statements that were also unparliamentary, on my part, during the course of the interrogations, then I would like to withdraw them as well".

To t h i s e n d , t h e Opposition Member was told that the Speaker “was and still is satisfied” that the Minister's withdrawal of his statement for the unparliamentary remark, was

As such, it was noted that her Motion has been disallowed.

Parliament's response came a week after Hughes wrote to follow-up on the Motion she submitted eight months prior.

On Friday, she told reporters during a press conference that while the offending Minister was allowed to withdraw his statement, it begs the question as to whether Opposition MP, Sherod Duncan was also extended similar courtesy.

She said, “Let the record show that to date Mr. Dharamlall has not even had the decency to apologize, at least to the women Members of Parliament. We in the Alliance For Change continue to hope that these issues will be rectified, I can't help but ask: Is this democracy?”

This newspaper understands that Sherod Duncan is still suspended following the incident.

Commissioner on the Women and Gender Equality Commission, Ms. Nicole Cole, had called for Dharamlall to be removed from public office, deeming his “Is a dildo you want” remark to a female Member of Parliament, as sexual harassment and abuse.

During the consideration of the budget estimates of Region Five on February 9, Dharamlall told one of the opposition's females MPs:

Opposition MP, Sherod Duncan to a question asked by another MP. Opposition Member of Parliament, Sherod Duncan then chimed in calling Dharamlall a “nasty fella” which was disallowed by the House Speaker, Manzoor N a d i r, w h o r e q u e s t e d Duncan to take his seat.

Duncan shouted in response, “I will not take my seat! I will not withdraw,” as

he continued heckling the Minister, adding too that, “the Speaker is condoning you all of the time”.

The Speaker then called on the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Gail Teixeira to move a motion for Duncan to be suspended for the next four sittings, which was eventually allowed.

The Women's activist said that sexual harassment is a crime, and the “unparliamentary behaviour” of the Minister is indicative of what is taking place in Guyana. While she vehemently criticised the words of Dharamlall, she was keen to note that the same minister only recently called for the “defrocking” of two female judges, after their rulings were not aligned in his Party's favour.

“This attacking and abusing women then issuing an apology is to give him a free pass and what is really at play here is deep rooted patriarchy,” the Women's Rights Commissioner concluded.

Furthermore, she said, “His party, if they had the inkling of any type of feelings for women should immediately ask him to vacate his office. He is unfit to lead. He should no longer hold public office. So in other words, he should no longer be in the House”.

Police seize birds after murder suspect escapes again Berbice police ranks on October 24 last, decided to seize four caged birds from a house in Canje Creek, Berbice, Region Six, after a man they were trying to catch for five years, slipped out of their hands, again.

Commander of Berbice, Shivpersaud Bacchus, told Kaieteur News on Thursday, that the suspect is wanted for the murder of a GuySuCo sluice worker that took place some five years ago. His ranks, he said, have been doing all they can to capture the man since then, but somehow he always manages to elude them.

“He always ducking and hiding”, Bacchus told Kaieteur News.

On October 24 last, ranks received information that the wanted man was hiding out at a house at Canje Creek.

They reportedly showed-

up unexpectedly at the location while he was there, but according to Bacchus, the suspect saw his ranks first before they made their move.

“He jump through a window and run through some bushes”, Bacchus told Kaieteur News.

The commander related that he had advised his ranks not take the risk to pursue the suspect into the bushes.

“I does normally tell my ranks not to go through bushes and so because of gun traps, because it could be dangerous”, explained Bacchus.

The ranks were reportedly disappointed that they had lost the suspect again. In an attempt to lure him into a trap, they decided to remove four expensive cage birds from the house and some “weed” (marijuana) they had found.

Bacchus said that the items were lodged at the Reliance Police station. A day later, someone claiming to be the owner of the birds turned up at the station to claim them.

Ranks, however, refused to hand over the birds, and the individual decided to accuse the ranks of stealing them from him in a news article published in another section of the media.

Bacchus however, told Kaieteur News that ranks explained to the man why the ranks removed the birds from the house and showed him a photo of the fugitive.

The man confirmed that the suspect was indeed at his house and ranks cautioned him that he can be charged for harbouring a fugitive.

Investigations are ongoing as the hunt continues for the suspect.

The Mexico loss hurt the most

elroy James, at the end of Guyana’s campaign at this year’s FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup tournament, was by far one of the best one-on-one players at the tournament.

His 6’9" frame would project him to be a power forward, and his handles and

- Delroy James sniper-like shots would make you think he’s a guard.

Nonetheless, the Guyanese, a wellaccomplished professional, would trade all the hype for a chance to feature in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Guyana narrowly missed out on a chance to join the USA , Canada, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Chile in today’s quarter-finals, with James telling Kaieteur News, that their defeat to Mexico “hurt the most.”

The men from the Land of Many Waters had an amazing tournament, but all that came crashing down they lost to Mexico 15-16 in overtime.

“The Mexico game made us come out flat (against Canada). The Mexico loss hurt the most and everybody was down after that,” James said. James, who had hit the game-winner against Ecuador to keep Guyana’s

winning streak intact, had a chance to be the hero in the Mexico game when he was fouled in overtime and was sent to the line to shoot two.

If he had made both shots, Mexico would’ve been packing their bags at the Holiday Inn Hotel, but instead, he missed the first shot and scored the second.

James, suiting up for Guyana in his second FIBA International tournament, played the 3x3 for the first time with his country, where he partnered with his brother Gordon, Shelroy Thomas, and Nikkoloi Smith.

“It is hard playing against teams that run plays, run sets; we just come together and play here, even though it’s 3x3,” James said while adding, “I think in terms of talent, we had enough, but when you’re playing against teams that have everybody in every position that can go and score shots, it’s very tough.”

James, hoping to feature for Guyana again in the 3x3 format, is confident that there’s enough talent for the country to piece together a team that can once again compete for a medal.

John reminded that the draw for the tournament will be done today at DCC and is asking

the teams to ensure their representatives are present.

John noted that a female leg will be played for the first t i m e i n t h i s y e a r ’s competition.

The event, which is being held in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, is expected to comprise a large number of local and international teams throughout the three days, November 11-13. Over one million dollars in prizes will be up for grabs and there will be no entrance fee.

The GSCL has also announced cash prizes and other incentives for all the categories with the All Stars Open, Masters Over-40 and Legends Over-50 winners carting off a hefty $300,000 each, plus trophies and the

GFF and Govt. to stage inaugural One Guyana President’s Cup His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali hosted a contingent of football stakeholders, led by GFF President Mr Wayne Forde, this past week, to discuss the inauguration of an end-of-year nationwide football tournament titled the “One Guyana President’s Cup”.

The event will be an interward competition organized across all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana, and will be conducted in two phases, with the first being an intra-regional straight knockout playoff, followed up by a national inter-regional round-robin championship. Ten regional teams, comprising 25 of each region’s best footballers, along with a five-member

technical staff, will contest the inter-regional round-robin championship.

The One Guyana President’s Cup is schedule to kick off on Sunday November 13 with the grand final taking place on January 1st, 2023.

Commenting on his Government’s involvement, President Ali stated: “My Government wants to see more young people participating in sport along with leaders across every region working together, and I believe this competition provides a platform for this to take place. Kitt cops seconds at AAU XC Classic The lively Sean Kitt has turned in numerous impressive sprinting to middle distance performances throughout the year.

His most recent performance saw him cop silver at the Amateur Athletics Union (AU) Cross Country Classic 2022, which was hosted at Cunningham Park in Queens, New York.

Competing out of the Dashing Dons athletics club, Kitt only competed in the Boys 7 – 8 2000 Yard Run. He turned in a time of 9:03.20s to finish second behind Harvey Hightower, who won in a time of 8:46.30s.

While Hightower won with some bit of distance, the battle for second also involved Metro Eagles’ Noah Brown (9:04.10s) and Dashing Dons’ Nico Jones

(9:06.10s).

GFA Semi-Finals on tonight at GFC Western Tigers to meet Santos, GFC and GDF square off; each for a place in the final Since the respective Senior Leagues in the nine (9) Regional Members Associations of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) kicked off simultaneously in March of this year, one common desire of all the competing teams would have been to reach the final.

In the case of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) those clubs which have almost fulfilled that dream are Western Tigers, Santos FC, Guyana Defence Force FC and Georgetown Football Club which will square off in the semi-finals tonight at the GFC Ground, Bourda.

Admission is $1000.

Fans could not have asked for a better serving of what is expected to be fierce exchanges as the best four teams have emerged form months of action.

If one were to take a cue from the quarterfinals where

three of the four matches went into extra time, this evening’s matches are going to be vivacious.

Only the GDF did not get to really showcase their weaponry as their opponent, GT Panthers did not show up and the Army lads were awarded a walkover as per the competition rules.

But the other three, have had some competitive playing time under their belts and will fancy their chances of outdoing each other as they are well aware that the ultimate ticket of being in the final, is their reward for a victory tonight.

Santos will hope that their main players, the likes of Stephon Reynolds, Darren Niles, Joshua Braithwaite, Akel Clarke, Randy Roberts and Alex Murray will once again combine efforts to deliver the goods.

On the other hand, their

opponent, Western Tigers will also be harbouring thoughts of a win and will turn to the likes veteran Eusi Phillips, Malachi Granum and Jermain Beckles, their goal scorers against the Guyana Police Force whom they defeated in their quarter final match to once again lead the charge along with Daniel Wilson, Marcus Wilson, Nicholai Andrews, Leroy Pedro, Bertie Pedro, Raphael Edwards, Seon Taylor, William Europe, and Cecil Jackman, when this clash kicks off at 19:30hrs.

The first match at 17:00hrs pits home team GFC which will be no push overs against a very formidable, GDF. GFC Captain Ronel McClean will be at the helm of their quest for glory and will rely on teammates, Ravi Coates, Lennox Young, Rondel Peters, and Earl Gill to led valuable support as they seek

to keep the Army at bay.

Impressive Guyana narrowly misses out on quarter-finals at FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup

I

t was an impressive performance from G u y a n a ’s m e n ’s team at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in Miami, Florida but in the end, the team of Delroy and Gordon James, along with Nikkoloi Smith and Shelroy Thomas, fell short of advancing to the quarter-finals.

Guyana, being made to compete in the tournament’s qualification round, faced Aruba on opening day, winning 20-14.

With former AEK Athens big man, Delroy James not playing on day one, the team felt his presence when they needed overtime to put away Ecuador 13-12.

After a series of exchanges, the two teams would play to a tied score (11-11) at the end of

regulation, sending the game into overtime, where the first team to score two points would win.

After several attempts and falling behind 11-12, it came down to Delroy James who hit one off the glass from behind the arc to hand Guyana their second win of the tournament and to remain unbeaten.

Up next, Guyana came up against Haiti, also a mustwin game.

An all-round team performance, with each player having their moment of brilliance, Guyana edged Haiti 19-17 to move into the Main Draw.

They were placed against Mexico and Canada, with the Spanish-speaking North American country being their first match.

Mexico was earlier annihilated by Canada 2-22 and went into the game against Guyana needing a

Nonetheless, the Guyanese men seemed poised to defeat the Mexicans even though it was a seesaw affair.

But James missed the first and converted the second, and Guyana took the lead 15-14.

range, just as the shot clock was about to expire to win 15-16.

Coming out against Canada in their second match in the Main Draw, Guyana didn’t seem dejected and were very flat-footed in their approach to the game.

In the end, the Canadians won 21-9 and ended Guyana’s participation in this year’s tournament.

ollowing the contesting of the quarterfinal stage of the Petra organised COURTS Pee Wee Under-11 Schools Football Tournament yesterday at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, four teams have made it to the semifinal stage. Enterprise, North Georgetown, St. Pius and Marian Academy secured wins to take one step closer to the ninth title.

Enterprise prevailed, 3 – 1, against Soesdyke Primary as Toshan Haynes led with a double.

He scored goals in the fifth and 19th minutes while teammate, Dontay Kowlessar (13th) accounted for the other goal.

Soesdyke’s lone goal was scored by Nathan Roberts in the sixth minute.

North Georgetown’s match with West Ruimveldt ended in a dreaded penalty shootout as the eventual semifinalist won 6 – 5. The victorious side was clinical from the line as Anthony Horshan, Vandell Edinboro, Akel Junior, Malik Fletchman, Nathaniel Peters and Shawn Douglas found the back of the net.

For West Ruimveldt, their goal scorers were Deshawn Thomas, Teon Francis, Aaron Archer, Malachi Alleyne and Yusuf McLean.

Marian Academy had the upper hand against Ann’s Grove Primary for the entirety of the match and triumphed 4 – 0.

Nyal George (3’) scored first then Maxwell Viapree (5’) doubled the lead for his

side. Christian LaRose (9’) scored Marian Academy’s third goal while Ezon Bulkan (29’) accounted for the fourth.

In the much anticipated Redeemer Primary versus Saint Pius encounter, the latter prevailed 2 – 1.

However, it was Redeemer that went ahead in the 22nd minute when Adiel Hamilton scored.

Aron Vasconcellos (28’, 30’) then made his presence felt with a double to give St. Pius the victory. Prior to the quarterfinals, the remainder of teams played for position 9 – 16.

COLAACO defeated Tucville, 1 – 0, to claim spot 15. The lone scorer in this match was Darrel Hickson (16’).

Timehri defeated Craig, 3 – 2, by way of a penalty shootout to cop 13th place. Craig’s Phillip Sealy and Kevin Dejounge scored but it was not enough to beat Timehri from the mark as Nyron Barrow, Carlos Medina and Quinton Taylor netted.

Winfer Gardens got past Smith’s Memorial, 3 – 1, on penalty kicks.

Winfer Gardens’ goals were scored by Jeremiah Williams, Andre Robinson and Niquan Harlequin while Asquith Smith scored for the opposition.

Dem Amstel easily walked away with 11th place following a victory via walk over from Mocha.

The competition continues next Saturday, November 12, at the same venue.

Guyana reached 207-5 in 42.5 overs to win their second match after their first round loss to the Windwards Volcanos to move to four points, the same the Trinbago Red Force and Volcanos.

Skipper Leon Johnson stroked a fluent 51 from 68 balls with six fours and shared in an 80 runs fourth wicket stand with Tevin Imlach who recorded his second List ‘A’ fifty.

Sherfane Rutherford scored 37 with a four and fours sixes before he fell with victory eight runs as Jamaican pacer Michail Powell had 2-37.

After a short delay due to a brief shower around midday CCC were asked to bat as the sun returned and Kirstan K a l l i c h a r r a n ’s p o o r performance continued when he was clean bowled for duck by Clinton Pestano at 5-1 before Zavier Burton (7) edged Shepherd to Keeper Anthony Bramble to see the Students to 28-2.

Richards was looking good and pulled Shepherd and cover drove Pestano nicely for boundaries while Bidasee played a solid supporting role.

But with the score on 682 in the 15th over, Richards retired ill as Skipper Ramdin joined Bidasee and together batted sensibly; picking the gaps and running easy singles and twos as the Guyanese never allowed the batters to score quickly.

The pair, watched by very few fans, saw the 100 posted 23 overs before Bidasee fell to Veerasammy Permaul at 114-3 before Ramdin offered Gudakesh Motie an easy return catch as CCC slipped to 137-4.

The 150 came up the 35th over as Odain McCatty and Mathew Forde built a carefully constructed stand.
