Bandits on wheels They have always been around, but usually in the fourwheeled variety, meaning cars; cars that are usually darkly tinted, known for handling well, and which could outrun most of what is thrown at them in pursuit. But there is a newer and growing phenomenon in the field of local criminality, a frightening one, which is of motorcycle bandits and bicycle bandits. They are alarming, because they seem to be able to crop up at will in any place and at any time of their choosing. That is a huge part of the trouble, the bandits get to lay in wait, observe closely, plot their criminal deeds, and then make their move. They have been mostly successful, because they can be so elusive, very much in the manner of hit and run drivers, or hit and run guerilla raids: the deed is done, and they are gone before any identifying or blocking action could be contemplated. The bandits come out of nowhere, and always have that essential element that targets do not possess. It is the element of surprise. Alongside of that, there is the readiness to shoot and to injure seriously, the state of mind that does not think twice to kill, if the circumstances make that necessary. Life is that casual, and the banditry that seems to shower all over Guyana, to be that universal. For, as should be coming clearer and clearer by this time, motorcycle bandits and bicycle bandits are no longer just a fear and reality in the capital city of Georgetown and its near outskirts. Far from it, for there have been not too infrequent reports of the same kinds of banditry on the East Bank Demerara and along the East Coast Demerara. The bandits on two wheels are spreading their attentions to other places, where there is a high likelihood of putting in a good day’s work, and reaping a nice, sweet harvest. The usual harvest produces cash and a cell phone almost automatically; and on a really good day, there could be the added returns of jewellery lifted, or a vehicle (car, motorcycle) seized. As the reports, recent and going back some more, can confirm, the fast and nasty incidents involving motorcycle bandits (no bicycles ones, so far) have aimed at customers leaving commercial banks (either right there or down the road by stoplights), restaurants (for those naïve enough and reckless enough to stop for a drink or bite, after leaving a bank or heavily laden with conspicuous jewellery), and supermarkets (at any time of the day, but preferably nearer to closing time, since there could be the solid chance for a loaded cash register). In fact, things are so far gone, that even drinking places have not been spared, with establishments held up, and owners and patrons relieved of their belongings. Bandits would then make good their escape, with motorcycles known to be among the machines of choice. In any crowded urban area, where vehicle congestion and heavy foot traffic are present, a motorcycle (or bicycle) is as difficult to grasp as quicksilver. It just can’t be held onto, and usually slips away in a flash. Like mercury, the same situation is at work with motorcycle and bicycle bandits: they are in hand and they are gone, just like that, with little to no control of anything of substance. Victims might as well be dealing with shadows, and their high-powered machines are as quick as they come. It is snatch and gone before those nearby can react. This is a major headache for the Guyana Police Force (GPF). Its ranks are dealing with what is the equivalent of a powerful and resourceful spirit force. Watch here and it has moved over there. Go somewhere else, and the bandits are already several steps ahead in this bigger and bigger game of cat and mouse, but one involving violation, loss of property, and loss of confidence. Hopefully, there is neither loss of blood nor loss of life. The GPF has its work cut out for it, but bewildered and besieged citizens are looking to it for solutions and any eases that they can get from the unrelenting rush of banditry, almost everywhere and in any surroundings. The criminals, seasoned or potential, are very skilled at what they do. They have the time and take the time to study targets of opportunity, scout out the territory, and gather as much intelligence as could be helpful to their operations. And then they put their
Bank practices need urgent revision DEAR EDITOR, Two recent revelations in the daily newspapers regarding banking, as well as my own experiences, have prompted me to pen this letter. The first startling discovery was the fact that a local bank has asked a customer to wait two (2) months while they investigate the disappearance of funds from his account. This bank thought of no other alternative but to have this customer wait until they investigated. No consideration as to how he is supposed to continue living without these funds in hand. Secondly, someone managed to cash fake cheques supposedly from the GRA at a local bank. This
is a blow to every customer, regardless of the type of account they possess. Forget international transactions, local transactions are seriously in jeopardy. Now on to one of my own personal experiences. I made contact with the New Building Society regarding divulging my account number and balance to facilitate me declaring all assets, as I have somehow misplaced my savings book. Via telephone I was informed that the information cannot be divulged as the Customer Care Representative could not be certain that I am the real account holder. She informed me that I needed to send an email instead, requesting the information. Email! I objected. “How can
you be sure that the account holder is the one sending the email?” I asked. Her response was that such was the policy of the bank. This policy definitely needs modernisation. One can never be certain that the person from whom the email is addressed is the one who sent the email. Never! The truth is that my email password is no secret. My husband has sent messages from my email. I only needed to ask. Nevertheless, I complied. Two follow-up calls to the bank have also been futile. The promised email response is almost three weeks late. There is room for changes in policies at various institutions in Guyana. I remember walking into a bank
in England on a Saturday morning to conduct a transaction and having only my bank account number on a piece of paper. The teller simply asked me some questions, verified if the answers matched and then did the transaction. There was no need for her to say anything. I sensed her compassion and apologised. In my own beloved country, I cannot enter a bank on a weekend, much less go without a bank card. Additionally, my sometimesvaried signature must match every time. It is heart breaking. Minds with the know-how of policy changes are leaving Guyana to the detriment of us all. Broken hearted, Ayanna Isaacs
MADE TO SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY DEAR EDITOR A friend called me out, saying I should know better, re. the Superior Concrete Inc. developments. I agree in these important areas that follow and stand corrected. First, the reaction of the second director of the company, Mr. Richard Austin Shamlin, was in order, and for these pointed reasons. The minister of the government, who somehow found his way to, or was escalated to and engaged, for intervention in the matter had no business being there. It was not his place, and it says so much of what is wrong here, and how we go about things incorrectly and unwisely here. On second thought I have to agree. Because when I think of this, no minister, no political figure, should turn up at my premises - residential
or commercial - for any official reason whatsoever. If there is a problem, and there was one with the company, then the professional bureaucrats must be the ones to run with that, and take it as far as they are allowed to go by law, rule, and regulation. After those avenues are explored in a series of escalating steps, then the next steps contemplated and put into action, must be to the courts, and then with a plea for the appropriate ‘Cease and Desist’ with process norms followed expeditiously, but faithfully. If and when that fails, then an appeal has to be made for next actions in the escalation chain to follow. I like that and agree completely. Editor, what has taken root in this society is that, and far too frequently, senior public servants reach for the
political spearhead, namely, the minister, sometimes even the president himself. This is now culture. And, just recently, the president himself almost overnight rushed forward to entangle himself in the matter of GUYOIL and alleged corruptions there. He should be aware, but remain above and outside the fray. The bureaucrats and board of that agency are responsible, and must have the wherewithal, to stand on their own feet, think on them, and make their own decisions. Ministers are there for consultations, not for directions. And certainly not for personal and public physical interventions. We have to make a start somewhere put an end to this mentality (and culture) about involving ministers specifically, or politicians in
general, to do the work of public servants. This does not speak well of the calibre of the public servants in place, or the all too ready eagerness of ministers (and head of state) to pounce or pronounce on the daily challenges that are part of professional life. It does not speak glowingly of citizens who, for something as mundane as a birth certificate, dial a minister of government to crack the whip, so to speak. For their part, ministers and senior political leaders, have to give room, challenge, urge, and empower public servants to do their job, and without fear or fealty considered. Public servants must feed off of that, and go from there. This is better. I correct myself. Sincerely, GHK Lall
President Biden, Do the Right Thing! DEAR EDITOR, Sir Winston Churchill, the most famous of British Prime Ministers, once said that you can always depend on the Americans to do the right thing after they tried everything else. That statement has quite a lot of truth in it. In our own case it is now clear that their actions here in the 1960s contributed greatly to us being saddled with the PNC dictatorship and the resulting
destruction of our economic and social infrastructure. However, their firm stance in 2020 contributed greatly in preventing another round of dictatorial regime in our land. I was reminded of Sir Winston’s witty remarks when I looked at the television news on May 12 and heard President Biden commenting on the situation relating to the Palestinian/ Israeli conflict. His remarks were “Israel has a right to
plans into action and swoop expertly. In some respects, banditry (of any kind) in this society has now transformed into the precision of a well-planned and well-executed military operation, as can be gathered from the components shared a few sentences ago in this same paragraph. This is what the GPF is confronted with on a daily basis, and to a greater and greater degree. Citizens have to venture out, and the bandits know it. When the law abiding do so, then they and whatever they have, including their lives, are on the line. It is as stark as this, and of intensifying national proportions for a while now. This is not a healthy or a wholesome way of living on a daily basis. Government and the police must move swiftly with concrete steps to give some substantive reassurance.
defend itself and that both sides should show restraint.” Surely, he has to be better informed. The reality is that the Israeli Government is guilty of provoking the conflict. The Apartheid regime has sent and is sending its police to evict people from their homes. What do you expect? Should those who are being forced out of their homes go quietly? How can you tell those people to show restraint? Whole families are thrown on the road to make way for foreign Jews. When the people retaliate with the primitive weapons at their disposal you rain bombs down on them destroying their homes, their children and lives. This is taking place at this time when the Israeli Prime Minister is on the verge of being pushed out of power. This provocation of the Palestinians is criminal and
designed as a distraction for the racist Apartheid regime in Israel. President Biden’s position on this issue goes against everything he said before, during and after the Presidential elections in the US. He condemned the actions of the police in the US as it relates to Blacks and other non-White peoples in the United States. He came out strongly against racism at home and expressed his abhorrence to the racists. Yet the US administration’s position in relation to Israel and Palestine is profoundly racist. The Israeli state is an Apartheid state. Laws are made to discriminate against Palestinians. Palestinians living in Israel cannot even repair their own homes, cannot buy property and many other atrocities. They (Continued on page 6)

Considering future needs in infrastructural investments
DEAR EDITOR, I recently participated in a civil engineering conference on sustainability, and of note is that the infrastructure investments we make today are going to impact our sustainability goals over their estimated 70-year lifecycle. There was a case study on a bridge in New York raised to allow for the passing of commercial ships. This is similar to the current issue facing the Demerara Harbour Bridge in Guyana. We should be asking ourselves what will be our needs about 30 years and 50 years from now? What technology is available today that we can leverage to have the maximum impact on the sustainability goals for positive climate change? If we consider the electric vehicle trends of today, the shift occurring in the automotive industry and the renewable technologies available, there is an opportunity to do much more with what on the surface appears to be an easy upgrade to the current infrastructure. Keeping in mind the goals of the Paris Agreement, the reality is that marginal im-

provements are not enough to have the shift in the consumption habits and fossil fuel culture that exist today in our society. Focusing on the Guyanese problem with the Demerara Harbour Bridge, there is a clear opportunity to leverage a new approach to crossing the Demerara River. The Government should consider reviewing the following options available: 1. Travel by boats/vehicles carrying ferries powered by a renewable energy source; 2. Use of a bridge: a) walking, b) cycling, c) train, d) automobile; and 3. all the above Most have selected 2. d) as their primary consideration and target consumer for such infrastructural investment. If we look closer at the use of an automobile to cross the river via a bridge or in Guyana’s case a “High Span Bridge” then the next question is, what kind of bridge should it be and for what kind of automobile today, 30, 50 and 70 years from now? Based on current incentives and regulations trends in car producing countries, it would be fair to expect that electric cars will be a dominant form
of the automobile in the future. Solar energy is also turning out to be one of the more cost-effective sources of energy. How can we leverage these two trends? One example would be to allow for a solar powered moving horizontal surface on the bridge that also provides for charging of electric vehicles. This would reduce emissions of fossil-fuelled automobiles and also provide a central charging location for electric vehicles under a covered platform that isn’t exposed to the elements. These forward-looking elements in our infrastructure developmental investments make quite a difference in whether we are only solving today’s problems or also providing solutions for the future. We must always keep in mind that there are limited funds and the investments made today will last approximately 70 years. Choose well. Best regards, Mr. Jamil Changlee Chairman The Cooperative Republicans of Guyana
Clearing of Mangrove at Versailles, Region 3 DEAR EDITOR, The Region Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara) Chambers of Commerce and Industry (R3CCI) have observed in the news, issues surrounding the proposed development of a Shore Base at Malgre Tout/ Versailles, West Bank Demerara. The Regional Chambers have reviewed the situation and understand that the mangroves are important for our sea defence. However, the proposed Shore Base will use steel sheet piling construction, which will serve to protect the shorelines and prevent flooding of the community. We welcome the Shore Base facility in Region Three, as it will require materials, labour and services that exist in the community. We, therefore, support the establishment of a
Shore Base facility, since during construction, development and completion; it will benefit the people of Region Three. Further, because of the nature of development that is expected to occur in Guyana, applications and expressions of interest for more shore base facilities are inevitable o n the western side of the
Demerara River and measures will be instituted to replicate the function of the mangroves. The project s hould be viewed as a positive for the region given its economic impact and ability to generate jobs. Halim Khan President of the Region Three Chamber of Commerce
Did collusion and complicity play a part? DEAR EDITOR, It is reported sand is being removed from a popular beach in Berbice by a contractor to fulfill the demand of an internationally funded project (“Contractor accused of taking sand from Number 63 Beach for project,” GT May 13). From indications, it appears the accusations are true, since the contractor has promised to return the sand and has repaired a section of the damaged area. It boggles the mind how this could have happened without collusion. Further, the claim by the
engineer, who lives along the beach entrance is ludicrous and could be seen as not having the best interests of
the region in mind and raises the question of complicity. Sincerely, Shamshun Mohamed

President Biden, Do the Right Thing! From page 4 are not free to move around in their own country. Successive American administrations have used “sanctions” against countries, often not for any good reasons. Cuba for instance is facing great sanctions and its economy is made to scream.Israel commits the worse terrorists’ actions in the world, killing civilians. After all the Palestinians do not have an army. The people are defenseless. When the sympathisers of Israel find it hard to defend their action, they resort to two arguments. One is what we mentioned already, that is Israel has a right to defend itself. The second one is that the two sides should sit down and talk. Both these arguments ignore the reality on the ground. I have mentioned already that the Palestinians are being deliberately

provoked, pushed out of their homes, prevented from going to worship in their holiest of month, and then slaughtered. Yet they are being called upon “to show restraint.” They are being portrayed as being equally guilty of the violence. Secondly “both sides should sit down and talk.” This sounds reasonable on the surface, but it is not. There are not equal forces. The Palestinians have nothing to threaten Israel. They are weak economically and militarily. The only thing they have is a strong spirit of resistance. Moreover, they have not been the ones responsible for the division of Palestinian land. This was imposed on them by the international community in 1948 when their lands were taken away. Therefore, the international community has a moral obligation to the
Palestinians. It must be part of the negotiations to ensure that the Palestinian rights are respected and upheld. The United States in particular has the power to stop the massacre. It supplies the Apartheid regime with the most modern weapons. It gives their racist state protection at the United Nations and elsewhere. Its economic assistance is enormous. Israel gets more economic aid from the US than the total aid given to the rest of the developing world. President Biden is in the position now to correct many of the wrongs done to the poor people of Palestine. I’m recalling Sir Winston Churchill comment, I believe that everything else was already tried and it is time now for America to do the ‘right thing’ by the Palestinian people. Sincerely Donald Ramotar
Another coalition supporter charged with illegal procession
Four APNU+AFC supporters who were charged.
Opposition Chief Whip, Christopher Jones.
Gary Morris, an A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) supporter, was yesterday jointly charged with Opposition Chief Whip, Christopher Jones; Opposition Member of Parliament, Annette Ferguson, and several other coalition supporters for an illegal procession. The other charged supporters are; Mark Griffith, Malcolm Billison, Travis Ellis, Gordon Lucas and George Halley. The matter was first called on Friday May 7, 2021, in the Georgetown Magistrates Courts before Senior Magistrate, Leron Daly, but Morris and Billison failed to appear

in court. The Magistrate had issued summons for the absentees and adjourned the matter to yesterdays date however, Billison still failed to make a court appearance. The charges stem from a march outside of the High Court in Georgetown last month following the ruling on the elections petition case by Chief Justice (Ag) Roxane George-Wiltshire. The first joint charge alleges that Jones and Ferguson along with the six coalition supporters on April 26, 2021, at Georgetown, illegally engaged in a procession without permission from the Commissioner of Police.
China's contract clauses in... From page 2 the G20 framework and hampers it from being executed effectively. The reason being is that the debt relief is being done through collaborative efforts with G20 members, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - seeing the two institutions set-
ting aside funds to aid countries in their debt relief. Morris explained that debtor countries are first required to present to the World Bank and the IMF, critical information about their debts before they receive relief, which they cannot do if China mandates strict confidentiality in the debt contracts signed.
The defendants were charged under Section 12 of the Public Order Act. Section 12, which stipulates, “Any person who holds, organises, forms, speaks at or takes part in any public meeting or public procession at which a noisy instrument is used without the permission of the Chief Officer of Police shall be guilty of an offence.” The law further outlines that anyone found guilty could face a fine of $26,000 and be imprisoned for up to four months. On the previous hearing of the matter, Jones, Ferguson, Griffith, Ellis, Lucas and Halley denied the charge and were placed on $20,000 bail each. Morris was yesterday placed on self-bail after he denied the charge and the matter was adjourned to June 4, 2021. Additionally, Ferguson was slapped with an individual charge, which alleged that on April 26, 2021, she obstructed a peace officer from conducting his duties. She pleaded not guilty and was placed on $10,000 bail for that offence.

FAO commissions new office at Agriculture Ministry’s LBI Complex The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations Secretariat in Guyana commissioned its new office yesterday, which is located in the Ministry of Agriculture’s La Bonne Intention (LBI) Complex. During the commissioning exercise, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha, said that the new office
demonstrates Government’s commitment to working with international partners to develop the sector. Further to this, the Minister said, “This new office is another act to demonstrate our commitment to working and collaborating with our international partners to develop the sector. This publication had reported that the $27M transaction was made pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the company and the GL&SC signed. That MoU dictated that the engineering company would lease the land for 50 years and pay $200,000 per acre annually. According to reports, Benn was appointed Commissioner of GL&SC in 2016 by the David Granger administration and was granted presiden-
tial powers related to the sanctioning of renting and granting of leases, licences and permission of occupancy of all public lands. However, when the Irfaan Ali administration took office in August 2020, he was stripped of those powers and was later sent packing in November. Following the revocation of his presidential powers, Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, S.C., had stated that his government would review all the leases, licences and permissions to occupy Public Lands granted by GL&SC after the NoConfidence Vote of December 2, 2018.

Guyana is once again taking its rightful place in the region in terms of pushing the agriculture agenda and food security.” The Minister was keen to note as well that Guyana has a history and a legacy for pushing agriculture in the Caribbean and CARICOM. Expounding further he said, “Our former President developed the ‘Jagdeo Initiative’ that was adopted by CARICOM. Those points are still relevant today. Our current President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has put forward a document to advance the agriculture agenda and food security in the Caribbean that was recently adopted by the CARICOM Heads of Government.” As a result of that, he said a Ministerial Taskforce was developed that is being chaired by Guyana and “I am very optimistic that with the help of the FAO and other partners we can develop a strategy to advance our food security agenda and

He added that Government will continue to support international organisations like the FAO and that the Ministry and the Government look forward to FAO’s cooperation, guidance and input to push the ag-
riculture agenda in the region. FAO’s Country Representative, Dr. Gillian Smith, said that the new space would provide an enabling environment for the staff. She also said that it would support the kind and quality of work required in Guyana from the FAO. The official said the new building will help to support the kind of quality work required by Guyana.

Ministry launches 20-week NGSA preparatory programme The Ministry of Education recently launched the National Grade Six Assessment Examination (NGSA) booster programme to help Grade Six students better prepare for this years examination. The programme would be broadcast on the Guyana Learning Channel (GLC) from Monday to Friday between 10:30 hours and 15:30 hours, and rebroadcast from 17:00 hours every day. The programme would also be uploaded to the GLCs YouTube channel, and can be accessed on the Dream tv app, Atlantic cable and others. At the launch, Minister of Education , Priya Manickchand, noted the challenges the Government faced trying to reduce learning loss, particularly during the pandemic. “The only way we have delivered education is in a classroom, in front of a blackboard, with the teacher and students sitting in their seats and we don’t know any other way. All of a sudden, we were asked because of COVID, to
stop everything you knew, turn this thing on its head and still deliver education; quit everything we have learned, trained and prepared to do just stop that but still deliver education.” With this in mind, the Ministry rolled out a robust education programme. This entailed the distribution of printed worksheets, the restructuring of the GLC, radio programmes, and other resources to help learners both in the hinterland and on the coastland, recover. The Ministry exhausted its printing budget in March for the year; however, Minister Manickchand said this will not stop the Governments commitment to its young people. “I want you to understand that this has been a difficult time for us, but I want you to understand in the same breath, that we will never give up on you. We will never give up on our children. We will always find ways to try to make it work,” she said. To this end, the booster programme will feature a 20week consolidated curriculum

for the Grade Six students since they will be tested on topics from Grades One to Five. “We believe that this is one more thing we are doing that will put your children, our children, our NGSA children, in a more confident position where we’re helping them not only academically but psychologically, and mentally, to be ready to sit this exam on the 4th and 5th of August,”
Minister Manickchand said. The Minister reiterated that this placement examination does not measure ones intelligence and as such, no one should feel pressured. She noted that a similar approach is being taken for CXC students. With regard to how students in hinterland/riverine communities would benefit from the initiative, Minister Manickchand said the Minis-
try is in the process of purchasing television sets, solar systems and satellites for every hinterland/riverine community to ensure that they have access. Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer, Dr. Marcel Hutson said this approach is testimony of the Ministrys creativity, resilience and commitment to ensure that every child has access to education. “We have not lost the vision of achieving our sustainable development, which speaks to equity, quality, inclusivity and lifelong learning and so, as a Ministry, we have never given up on our students. We have never given up on our people in this country and there is a reason why we have never given up and we will never give up because we recognise the importance of education and how education can change the lives of people,” he said. Head of GLC, Ms. Bibi Aniesha Mohamed said the Government embarked on this intervention to provide a programme that can make the lessons as engaging as pos-
sible, utilising the skills of the best local, trained teachers and technical team. “Local content is a combination of consolidated and appropriate information quality graphics, and a multitude of colours and, as we all know, colours contribute significantly to memory retention, enhancing cognitive skills and improving brain function,” she said. Those who wish to utilise the GLCs YouTube channel and Facebook page will be able to interact with the Department. Some $200 million was allocated in the 2020 Emergency Budget for the establishment of six additional channels, as well as a new radio station to deliver educational content. This led to the GLC reforming its programming, which saw nursery to secondary school learners being able to access scheduled educational content amid COVID-19. The launch was held at the National Centre for Educational Resources Development. (DPI)

Chelsea Edghill proud of performance in Argentina Despite missing out on qualifying for Tokyo Olympics Twenty-three-year-old former Caribbean U-21 Table Tennis Champion and Pan-Am Games Qualifier Guyanese Chelsea Edghill was one month away from possible qualification for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo Japan when the deadly pandemic COVID-19 brought the World and Sports, to a virtual standstill
forcing the qualifiers set for March 2020 in Argentina to be called off and later the Olympics was postponed. However, if all goes well, the Olympics will be held in July and August of this year. Chelsea has returned to Guyana from Portugal where she has a contract to play division two table tennis with Portuguese club
Lusitania de Lourosa. “Being home after so long feels good, being back with my parents during what was going on with the Pandemic. Being away was a really good experience, time and time again I would say its one of the best experiences in the sport that I have had so far,” said Chelsea.
In the Round of 16 of the second knock-out tournament in Rosario, Argentina, at the 2021 Latin American Singles and M i x e d D o u b l e s Qualification in April. Edghill, seeded 17th, gave a good account of herself as she met the player seeded one position above her, needing just five games
to see off Paraguays Leyla Gomez (11-8, 11-7, 17-15, 711, 11-5) before losing her next game. Talking about performance in the Olympic Qualifies Chelsea said, “Yes I am disappointed that I didnt qualify but at the same time I am proud of my achievement of being able to compete and play at my best and play at a very high level despite all the challenges I have faced throughout the process and it goes to show that with hard work you can do anything and I would say I am somewhat satisfied at being able to perform at such a level.” When asked what some of those challenges were the Table Tennis player said mainly the pandemic and a lack of sponsorship. “My biggest challenge was the pandemic, I know all of the players who attended tournaments were affected but some were affected more than others. In my case, I was unable to practice for quite something and being away from family and that sense of worry that you constantly have during that period and some of the things which occurred during the pandemic were not good. Also leading up to the preparations for the Qualifiers not being sponsored for whatever reason… even before the pandemic as well not… being sponsored to compete at the Games and attend high level training camps. Even though I was in Portugal I was playing at clubs and playing in the professional league.” Chelsea said she navigated through this with the help of her friends. Yes, I was assisted by the GOA and G T TA g i v e h e r t h e opportunity to go out and represent Guyana and she is grateful for that. “But throughout most of my career I was sponsored by my parents and the Continental Group of Companies. My parents funded my training, my travels and everything I have achieved in the sports is thanks to them.” Chelsea noted that as she grew older and understood the value of money she felt it was unfair for her parents to fund her career now since she is an adult and no longer playing at the junior level. “I am capable of earning
Chelsea Edghill my own money but at the same time when I go out there I am not representing myself… I am representing Guyana,” continued Chelsea, who was born in Brooklyn New York on July 6, 1997 to Godfrey Edghill and Deirdre Baynes-Edghill. The talented lass spoke about what she thinks should be done to improve the sport in Guyana and feels more can be done by the GOA, GTTA, Corporate Guyana and the Government to help the players and the sport with better facilities. The former Bishops High school student and the four-time NSCs Junior Sportswoman of the year informed that the schools tournaments in Portugal are used as scouting in assisting to produce future International stars. Chelsea yesterday paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Charles Ramson Jnr described the meeting as very successful. “Minister Ramson was really insightful and was open to suggestions. We spoke about the plights of fellow Athletes who go through the same things and even worse than me and I think he has a better understanding what is happening and what needs to be done for Athletes,” she said. Chelsea has a planned m e e t i n g w i t h G T TA President Godfery Munroe to discuss development of the Sport in Guyana. When asked if she felt Guyanese sportspersons can remain here and become top Athletes or do they need to journey overseas to see improvement to an international standard, Chelsea said that Guyana does not have the facilities to produce top international Athletes. “Speaking for Tennis we (Continued page 21)

Last year, the eleven cricket teams of the club distributed millions of dollars worth of cycles, cricket gears, uniforms, clothing, footwear, food hampers, office materials and educational grants to less fortunate youths, public institutions, churches and sports organisations across the country in memory of Butcher. The 2021 edition was launched several weeks ago and recently donated four cycles to youths in Linden, where Butcher lived for most of his life after his test retirement in 1969.
