IS THIS A CASE OF SATIRE? DEAR EDITOR I can understand Mr Persaud’s concern about the level of public spending by our Prime Minister and other Ministers of Government at a time when Guyana’s economy is not doing well. However, I would like Mr Persaud to explain why he keeps referring to the PM’s wife as Lady Sita. Could it be that he is being satirical? Is he suggesting that she has such illusions of grandeur that she is encouraging or initiating this
high level of spending? I hope that Mr Persaud does not think this British courtesy title is the correct way to refer to the wife of a Prime Minister in Guyana. It is not even a correct way to refer to the wife of a Prime Minister in the land of our former colonial rulers, where “Lady Sita” would have to be the daughter of a peer (like Lady Diana Spencer, whose father was an Earl). Even the wife of a “Sir Moses Nagamootoo” (and thankfully we gave up such
colonial honours when we became a republic) would be “Lady Nagamootoo”, not Lady Sita. Americans, in an older republic than Guyana, refer to the wife of their President as “the First Lady”. But I have never heard any of those ladies referred to as Lady Michelle (Obama), or Lady Hilary (Clinton) or Lady Barbara (Bush). The First Ladies are Michelle Obama, or Mrs Obama, etc. Pat Robinson Commissiong
Improvements in Guyana’s press freedom ranking DEAR EDITOR, In observance of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2018, the Government has already assured its commitment in relation to the free flow of information in Guyana. Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, who also holds responsibility for information has already declared the government’s commitment to strengthening press freedom and to protect journalists, in keeping with the expectation of United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. In his message, the Secretary General stated that “promoting a free press is standing up for our right to truth”. Since the APNU+AFC
Coalition Government came into office, Guyana has improved its press freedom ranking by moving up five places in the latest Reporters Without Borders, World Press Freedom Index. Guyana now ranks 55 among 180 countries. The prime minister also highlighted that “Guyanese journalists are free once again to practice their profession without being subjected to state-sponsored physical attacks, terror threats to their publishing houses, or being branded “carrion crows” and “vultures”. “No journalist has been prosecuted in recent years under any known criminal defamation law, or falsely imprisoned, tortured or killed in the line of duty.”
It must be noted that a stop has been put to the corrupt and indiscriminate distribution practices by the PPP/C administration of broadcast licenses to its political cronies and friends. The reformation of Media Practices is a step in the right direction by the State and this is also commendable. Therefore, the media becoming the fiefdoms of vested corporate interests and political parties is something that is being cautioned against by the Information arm of the Government. The Media must be seen as playing a constructive role in the promotion of National Development. Best Regards, Dillon Goring
Some advice for the Government and Opposition DEAR EDITOR, I am making a public appeal to Government and the Opposition to stop stifling peace and crippling progress by being inflexible. They must stop refusing to communicate respectfully and elegantly with each other for the good of our beloved Guyana. It hurts me deeply to see these two political elephants charge into each other repeatedly with thunderous impact causing terrible damage while trampling the ordinary people and the economic prospects of the nation under their heavy feet. Why is it that among Guyana’s main political parties there is always a conspiracy to destroy people and what they stand for; always a desire to usurp power by any means, and a stubborn refusal

to give opponents credit (or in Guyanese parlance: “gee jack ‘e jacket”)? My partner, Ronald Mc Garrell, and I have had several peace walks, conferences and presentations on peace and harmony in this country. I have written many letters to the media, done many programmes on television, including on my own Electric Mosque’s ‘Teachings of Islam’, to elucidate on the poisonous disharmony this situation is causing on the populace of Guyana. I have used every means at my disposal to warn the leaders and people of this nation that the endless political drama will cause the concomitant destruction of the economy due to local and international investors’ inevitable lack of confidence in our
political structure and culture. This is a serious issue. The Government of Guyana and the Opposition need to take a page out of the book of country folk who grew up in the sugar belt outside the racism and political madness. There, we live like neighbours. Race has never been a dominant factor. There, people of all races co-exist in harmony and mutual respect. A neighbour will ask another for a cup of sugar and another neighbor will ask for permission to pick some ochroes from a neighbour’s tree. That is how it people live when they are not caught up in ‘winner-takes-all’ politics. If the Government and Opposition can understand that simple countryside (Continued on page 6)
The power of the campaign promise DEAR EDITOR, I hereby commend Peeping Tom for the column entitled “Promises, promises, promises. It was spot on. To expand on his enlightenment, I state that when politicians go on pre-election campaigning, it is their way of applying for the job of governing the country which belongs to the voters. Their manifesto is their credential to indicate their qualifications for the job. The voting citizenry who are collectively the owners of the country then decide whom to employ for the job of governance. They use the power-
ful X to approve this employment. During campaigns is the time politicians are being interviewed by the citizenry for employment and politicians make promises to do an excellent job. In other words the voters are the employers and the politicians are the employees. Despite all the fluff, pomp and sirens, after being employed, they blank out the fact that the same X that put them in can also take them out if they do not live up to their promises. But as the Peeper said, blind loyalty breeds suckers.
Citizens X and Citizens Y have the power to choose by performance and not ethnicity or misplaced loyalty. Once this nonsense continues Guyana will forever continue in the sad state it is presently in. There is a seriously sad joke making the rounds in America about Guyana. The American comedians say, “America’s got Johnny Cash and Bob Hope. Guyana’s got no cash and no hope.” I implore my fellow wise Guyanese to prove this joke wrong. Gordon Lewis. Antigua.
Lincoln Lewis’s criticism of Rusal was unjustified DEAR EDITOR, Please allow me to reply to Lincoln Lewis’s column ‘Eye on Guyana’ that appeared in the Kaieteur News on the 6th May, 2018. Lincoln Lewis was quick to criticize. In his eagerness to criticize Rusal and former President Jagdeo for slights real and imagined, Mr. Lewis attempts to twist facts to suit his dubious agenda and in so doing, does himself and our nation’s investment climate a disservice. Mr. Lewis begins with the sale of 4.7 acres of land for $150 Million to Mr. Deripaska, whom Lewis connects with money laundering in his first paragraph. Mr. Deripaska is under sanction by the US government as “consequence for Russia’s actions”, not money laundering. (https://www.cnbc.com/ 2018/04/06/us-sanctionsrussians-including-oligarchlinked-to-former-trump-campaign-chief-paulmanafort.html). Lewis then states that the land sale deprives Guyanese awaiting house lots. This is despite Lewis’s claim the land was sold under fair market value, at the sale price a 5000sq ft house lot would cost $4million. That figure would rise to $9 million if the Rodrigues & Associates valuation were utilized; all this before bridge, road, water and electricity are installed. These prices are beyond
the realm of those who applied to Housing for subsidized house lots. Interestingly, the Re-migrant Scheme at Providence which offered high income house lots at $7 Million were woefully undersubscribed and remain largely empty. The actual price people are willing to pay is much lower than the fantasies entertained and I would have expected a more honest appraisal from one as experienced in the real estate world as Mr. Lewis. Editor, Mr. Lewis disparages the Rusal investment in Guyana as “incestuous” and omits facts well known. The Rusal US$150 Million Foreign Direct Investment to get the bauxite industry revitalized, including opening new mines; that Rusal has expended over US$100 Million since to purchase Goods and Services locally. Rusal has 500 plus local employees. Rusal’s sub-contractors, Olendorff Carrier’s has 190 employees; Rusal hires Rod and Nielsen for continuous dredging operations in the Berbice River for the benefit of all who utilize the port. A perusal of the Audited accounts of Rusal’s local subsidiary BCGI shows it has been operating at a loss for well over a decade. (Nazim Ali & Company). Rusal has stayed the course to keep the bauxite industry alive locally and with hopes of eventual
recovery of its investment. Rusal did not pack up and leave after the 2015 elections in Guyana, to accuse the company of being aligned with the previous Government in disingenuous as the company continues to engage with the present collation government directly to seek solutions for the challenges facing the company and industry locally. Among the reasons for BCGI’s unprofitability are the high stripping ratio and the absence of a railroad. A comparison to Rusal’s operation in Guinea where the ore lies on the surface and where a 100-mile dedicated railway exists shows that Guyana is indeed fortunate that the company continues to operate locally. It is of note that Bosai, the other bauxite operator in Guyana has shifted its focus dramatically to Manganese in Matthews Ridge, North West. Instead of attempting to cast aspersions of improper (Continued on page 6)

BISHOP EDGHILL’S RESPONSE DOES NOT SURPRISE DEAR EDITOR, It comes as no shock that Bishop Edghill would deny ever having a conversation with me, during the ICCC conference in 2005. The conference was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica. I am not surprised, that he would deny expressing his ambition to become the Prime Minister of Guyana. What is shocking, how-
ever, is his hypocrisy in accusing me of bearing false witness or testimony, when in his many utterances in and outside the Parliament of Guyana and as chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission, one can find many instances where Bishop Edghill uttered falsehood and testimony against his fellow politicians. Moreover, his recent conduct in Parliament does not
exemplify “positions of principle and morality.” Lastly, I do not wish to engage in back and forth letter-writing. However, I would simply ask the good Bishop, to examine his own soul, before quoting scripture and accusing others of uttering falsehoods or testimony... He needs help! Bishop Joseph G. Fisher
Labour has been relegated ... From page 4 welfare. And yes, there is a need for a Ministry of Labour. The historical evolution of this country shows that labour has a sordid history of exploitation, brutality and treatment as sub-humans. This inhumane treatment has been resisted and fought against from the moment of enslavement of the Amerindian community, the captured arrival of African as slaves, the arrival of indentured servants, and by the colonized. Economists have considered Land, Labour, Capital and Entrepreneurship as the factors of production. N o n e o f t h e f a c t o r s is possible without the production, consumption and distribution of labour. Even in the most mechanised society the presence of labour is valued and considered important, in all and every part of the developmental chain. There’s no country with our historical experiences that does not see Labour taking pre-eminence. This recognition is not treated with lightly. In 1953 when we elected our first government— though limited in power—
among the first things Premier Cheddi Jagan did was to establish a Ministry of Labour, whose political head was a Minister of the Cabinet. That principle and value for Labour was held up until 10th May 2015. This 1953 Government had within it the likes of Forbes Burnham, Eusi Kwayana, Ashton Chase, etc. What our indigenous government signaled to Guyanese, by elevating the colonial Department of Labour to a Ministry of Labour, is that the workers/citizens would no longer be treated as subhuman and an incidental factor, marking a crowning achievement to the centuries of struggles by our forebears against the notion of being mules and treatment as beasts of burden. Our ancestors fought for the right to a place at the table and to be treated as human beings with the capacity to play a meaningful role in their development and society as a whole; In 2015 when the APNU+AFC took the decision to relegate L a b o u r t o a department, as was done during the colonial era, it not only marked a retrogressive step in our
evolution- though I’m inclined at this stage to think the decision was not well thought out given historical meanings, ramifications and development— deserving to be addressed through ventilation and correction; The trade union does not seek a new ministry to represent Labour. History has shown Labour incorporated in other ministries with equal prominence. We have had a Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Ministry of Labour and Human Services, etc. prior to May 2015. It is unfair and unjust to the struggles and achievements of Labour— which is the 20th century movement that laid the foundation for internal selfgovernment, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the presence of the current corps of political leadership- to be cast aside in a corner. How can there be justification for a Ministry of Business (capital/employer/ entrepreneurship), a Ministry of Natural Resources (land) and none that gives pre-eminence to Labour (workers), when the success of both ministries relies on treating workers with due regard and dignity as ensconced in the Constitution and Labour Laws Of Guyana? Further, when labour is relegated it means that workers are no longer considered a vital factor in the nation’s development but merely incidental to it. These realities run contrary to the slogan of a “Good Life” which Labour views as workers being a direct beneficiary of, through meaningful involvement (Article 13, 38 and 149C of the Guyana Constitution), and not incidental to. The trade union repeated call for a Ministry of Labour is grounded in the aforementioned principles and ensuring the well-fought for gains are being secured and advanced. Lincoln Lewis.

BISHOP JOSEPH FISHER WOULD NOT HAVE LIED DEAR EDITOR, Generally, I merely glimpse at any news and reports wherein the Honourable Bishop Edghill is mentioned as I have no admiration of him, not because of his PPP affiliation but because he rarely comes across as fitting a ‘man of the cloth’ in my humble opinion. I find it unacceptable that an individual of his stature would mix and curl up with a political party whose members have done so many wrongs barefacedly e.g. Rohee firing black embassy employees without cause, Brassington and company financially missing in action and so on. Plus his odd behaviour in Parliament not so long ago which was very much not in
keeping for a man of the cloth. So moving along in my browsing, I saw the name of my blessed friend Joseph Fisher as I scanned the letters and wondered what happened that my friend’s name was referenced. Well, well, I was surprised that of all the people who should take umbrage at my friend is Bishop Juan A. Edghill. Tut..tut. I can vouch for my friend Bishop Joseph G. Fisher and so I rise to his defence. That which Fisher wrote and mentioned in his letter is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Bishop Fisher is an outstanding man of the cloth and is most true to his faith. He would not blemish himself with any inexactitude and the fact that he
did write that letter to the editor was clearly his angst at “the over the top posturing, of my brother in Christ.” I agree with Bishop Fisher. The other matter that aroused my interest is the nationality of Bishop Juan A. Edghill. Is he a Venezuelan and if so, is he allowed to sit in Parliament? Perhaps the Editor could add a comment on this. Take it from me, Carl Veecock, that what my friend Bishop Joseph G. Fisher wrote, is gospel. Now watch yuself Edgy, Peter might have some questions fuh yuh when yuh arrive at de Pearly Gates!! Carl Veecock 35 Eastwood Crescent Markham, Ontario Canada
Some advice for the Government ... From page 5 culture, absorb it and put it into practice, Guyana will have a chance to achieve its true potential. But that will only happen if politicians can set aside their personal lusts and petty squabbles. For some, this means putting aside the lust for power and others the lust for wealth. There are some who will have to give up their greed and the corruption it creates. Many will have to set aside their deceptive techniques to destroy good, decent people. The suffering masses of Guyana have been too long in the clutches of antagonistic political rivals and as pawns in destructive ‘powergrab’ politics that quickly changes to ‘power-play’ politics when politicians get power. We see this today as we saw in the last government. Therefore, while I was in meditation in the early mornings, the idea came to me to appeal to the President and the Government of Guyana and the Opposition Leader and his party to read the book ‘How to win Friends and In-
fluence People,’ by Dale Carnegie and accept and apply its wisdom. Government seems able to influence its supporters; the Opposition seems to be able to influence its supporters, but they cannot seem to win friends and influence people across the racial divide; across the political divide. Guyana is a country which truly needs peace and development. It is only by peace and cooperation between the opposing power blocks that the people can be inspired. In recent walks and travels, I gather that there is a new breed of race-haters between the major groups of Guyana. It is not large-scale, but the dangerous small minorities exist on both sides. One side thinks the PPP-C is god and total perfection while the other side behaves as if Government is another god with absolute perfection. But I share the belief, also expressed by so many wise letter writers and columnists in the media, that cooperation between these two giants of politics is the only thing that
can save our economy, our people and country. In particular, it is the only way forward that will show any vicious, evil neighbor looking to exploit our disunity that our country’s politicians are strong and wise. Here are some excerpts from Mr. Carnegie’s book that I think would be most pertinent and useful to the political leaders and followers of these giant political parties. I hope these words of wisdom would inspire them to reach to each other and start to work to save Guyana. God knows our nation need this: · “If you argue and rankle and contradict, you may achieve a victory sometimes; but it will be an empty victory because you will never get your opponent’s good will.” · “Listen first. Give your opponents a chance to talk. Let them finish. Do not resist, defend or debate. This only raises barriers. Try to build bridges of understanding.” Hajji Roshan Khan Snr. Universal Peace Federation
Lincoln Lewis’s criticism of ... From page 5 conduct on President Jagdeo and his Privatization team for enticing Rusal to invest locally, Mr. Lewis should express appreciation for the workers he now represents. Mr. Lewis should use the power of his pen and Union to attract Foreign Direct Investment instead of a tool of intimidation against those who have seen fit to invest in our Nation’s growth. Mr. Lewis has been after Rusal for many years to comply with local laws and ‘unionize’. In 2009 he orga-
nized wildcat strikes that caused disruptions to the company’s operation and led to the dismissal of 57 workers. Rusal insists that Mr. Lewis is to blame for this fiasco as they presented him with three options at the time. Mr. Lewis and his Union never paid any of the dismissed workers any compensation, (How many Rusal workers does Mr. Lewis’s represent?), nor would they be in any position to help the current 500 workers employed by Rusal, should the com-
pany cease operations in Guyana. A Job is an important part of a person’s psyche, it gives self-worth, and it allows one to plan for the future. In the words of the American President who introduced the New Deal “True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made”: Franklin D Roosevelt. Sincerely Robin Singh

Scrap, replace Cybercrime Bill - Ram
…says new Bill must conform to internationally-accepted Budapest Convention
A
ttorney-at-Law, Christopher Ram has recommended that Government produce a new Cybercrime Bill to the National Assembly that conforms to the internationallyaccepted Budapest Convention. According to Ram, coalition parties, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) “have used the ruse of a Cybercrime Bill to reintroduce Sedition Legislation nakedly seeking to protect not the State, but the Government”. “That is not what cybercrime laws are about. My recommendation is that the entire Bill be scrapped and replaced by a Bill based on the Budapest Convention,” Ram stated. Over 130 countries have accepted the Convention as a guide or have signed on to adopt the principles in their cybercrime legislation. The Convention is the first international treaty on crimes committed via the Internet and other computer networks, dealing particularly with infringements of copyright, computer-related fraud, child pornography and violations of network security. It also contains a series of powers and procedures such as the search of computer net-
works and interception. The Organisation of American States (OAS) through its ministerial working Group on cybercrime has been steering members towards the adoption of the Convention. Ram said having read the report and the minutes of the Parliamentary Select Committee which reviewed the Bill and the Bill itself, the representatives who sat on the Committee did a rather superficial and poor job under the chairmanship of the Attorney General Basil Williams. Government Members on the committee included Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Public Security; Nicolette Henry, Minister of Education; Michael Carrington and Audwin Rutherford. The opposition members on the committee were Gail Teixeira, Chief Whip; Clement Rohee; Anil Nandlall and Gillian Burton-Persaud. AIMING AT AFC AFC Leader Raphael Trotman has stated that his party will not support the Sedition Clause (Clause 18) in the Cybercrime Bill while Ramjattan, the AFC Chairman, has countered the leader by stating his full support for the Bill. Ram noted that Trotman must be aware that Ramjattan along with AFC MP
Attorney-at-Law, Christopher Ram Carrington were members of the Committee and that both were present and voted to retain the ‘dangerously offensive Clause’. In fact, Ram pointed out that Ramjattan played a key role in the Parliamentary Committee, including referring the Bill to a lecturer at a meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which he attended, and also in offering guidance to the Committee that the Commonwealth has a standard Legislation/Model Act, and the Cybercrime Bill emanated from that Act. “At best, Mr. Ramjattan could only have been referring to the 2002 Common-
Pearl store owner charged with vigilante murder of bandit Yesterday, two years after a store owner shot and killed a bandit who tried to rob his supermarket, he was charged and remanded to prison for murder. Fifty-nine-year-old Moses Singh appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was not required to plead to the indictable offence which stated that on August 20, 2016 at Pearl Village, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Seon Clarke. The man’s attorney, Latchmi Rahamat told the court that her client is sickly and recently underwent three surgeries in the United States of America. She added that her client was instructed by a surgeon in Florida not to leave the country because of his health issues. Rahamat further told the court that a gentleman claiming to be a member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) went to her client’s residence in Florida and arrested him. The court heard that Singh was then taken to the airport and handed over to ranks at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, where he was placed in custody. The lawyer pointed out that immigration authorities in Guyana have no records of the alleged police officer who arrested her client, adding that it is something that needs to be investigated. However Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that immigration records showed the accused entering Guyana alone. The Magistrate after listening to the prosecutor remanded the accused to prison
Remanded: Moses Singh and instructed him to make his next court appearance on May 17. According to reports, on the day in question, 22-year-old Seon Clarke was shot dead by the accused while his friend was beaten by villagers after they managed to elude police officers. It was reported that Clarke and his friend had plotted to rob a supermarket in Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, but their plans were quashed when the police showed up. Clarke’s friend subsequently led police to where they had stashed a weapon and two cell phones.
A map of countries who have utilised the Budapest Convention wealth Computer and Computer Related Crimes Model Law. Incidentally, a 2014 Discussion Paper on Cybercrime Model Laws prepared for the Cybercrime Convention Committee (T – CY), reports that the Commonwealth Model Law could not be found on the Commonwealth Secretariat’s website and has been of little relevance in terms of impact upon Commonwealth countries or even generally.” Ram stated that he found Trotman’s statement offen-
sive, because it represents a pattern of conduct in which Trotman and the leadership of the AFC seek to distance the Party whenever questions arise in the public over odious matters supported by the Party in private. “Under the party’s duplicitous leadership, the policy is to support even the most reprehensible and outrageous acts of the coalition, and in the event there is public outrage, the reaction is distance, deny and disown,” Ram stated.
He noted that the AFC has done so in relation to Value-Added Tax (VAT) on education, the parking meter contract and the Esso/Hess and CNOOC/NEXEN petroleum contract. Ram who played a leading role in the formation of the AFC said he is shocked to see what the party has become. He described the party as ‘opportunistic, selfserving and dishonest – seeking only to promote the interests and comforts of a few leading members’.

Murdered teen in Triumph cemetery…
Police now detain three family members
T
here has been a dra matic twist to the in vestigation into the gruesome murder of Ranella Benfield, the 18-year-old receptionist who was found in a cemetery at Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD) in December. Her face was bashed in and the skin ripped from it. On Sunday the police detained three members of the teen’s household, Benfield’s mother, father, and older sister, in what they say is a necessary move, in furtherance of their investigation. Benfield, of Lot 99 Canterbury Walk, Beterverwagting, ECD, was found lying on her back with her hands on her stomach. The flesh on her face was exposed.
Investigators believe that Benfield might have been struck on the head with a heavy object. The discovery led them to comb the scene, looking for sharp objects which could have been used to disfigure her face. Ranks at that time examined different theories, even suggesting that her face might have been damaged by animals. But one investigator commented, “It’s hard to think some animal just destroyed her face and no other part of her body.” Benfield, who was employed at Qualfon, was clad in a white jersey and blue jeans, which was pulled down to her knees, exposing her white underwear. At the time of the discovery one source even suggested, “Her under-

that time was informed that the teen was last seen around 18:00 hrs the Saturday by one of her colleagues. It is suspected that she might have been killed the same night, since persons in the area reportedly heard screams in the vicinity of the cemetery. At the time of the gruesome discovery there was no shortage of speculation and theories, none of which
helped the police investigation. Many came from family members. In light of her family members’ arrest, which police claim is as a result of new evidence, the speculations and theories have once again begun. A number of individuals close to the family have been giving police information which they did not have before.
AG claims he saved Guyana by entering into $226M settlement with Guytrac
A
ttorney General (AG), Basil Will iams says that he saved Guyana in excess of $63M when he decided to enter into an out of court settlement with Guyana Tractor Equipment (Guytrac), causing the State to pay $226M. Yesterday, the AG issued a press statement in an effort to “bring clarity to the ludicrous contents” of an article published in this newspaper. The article highlighted the fact that AG Chambers had filed an appeal after it lost a case against Guytrac but soon quashed that appeal and decided to settle the matter out of the judicial system. (Read online via link: h t t p s : / / www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/ 2018/05/04/govt-agrees-topay-guytrac-226m-in-yetanother-out-of-court-settlement/.) Williams noted that under the previous administration, Guytrac was awarded a contract to supply the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) with equipmen,t but the PPP/C Cabinet then withdrew its’ no objection. As a result, Guytrac commenced an action on the 1st June 2015, suing the NDIA and the Attorney General for breach of contract. The AG said that the matter was conducted solely by
Attorney General, Basil Williams former Deputy Solicitor General Prithima Kissoon. He said that Kissoon prepared and filed pleadings on behalf of the State “in which she assisted the case for the defence without regard to specific instructions from the Honourable Attorney General. By the time the Honourable Attorney General attempted to intervene in the matter Ms. Kissoon had already filed pleadings, conducted the trial, argued and filed submissions.” Williams said that it was because Kissoon “failed to obey specific instructions, the State lost.”
He noted that Justice Diana Insanally awarded damages for breach of contract in the sum of G$226,161,235; damages for loss of profit in the sum of G$44,602.000 as a result of the breach of the contract on the part of the Defendant; damages in the sum of G$19,000,000 and interest on any award at the rate of six percent per annum from the date of filing to the date of judgment and at the rate of four percent per annum until fully paid. Wi l l i a m s s a i d t h a t “Given the Order of the Court and the manner in which the case was conducted by Ms. Kissoon, it was in the best interest of NDIA and the Government of Guyana to amicably resolve this matter.” The AG said that based on the instructions of NDIA government decided to pay $226M to Guytrac for heavy duty equipment. Williams said that the government “in the public’s interest” negotiated that the settlement would not include damages for loss of profit in the sum of $44.6M; damages in the sum of $19M; interest on any award at the rate of 6 percent per annum from the date of filing to the date of judgment and at the rate of 4 (Continued on page 22)

From page 8 percent per annum until fully paid as per the Judge’s order. The AG noted that Guytrac agreed to forego in excess of $63M. In his statement, Williams failed to speak to certain key issues highlighted in the article to which he was responding. The AG spoke nothing of the appeal, not even to explain why he would have filed an appeal if he thought the State did not have a strong case and why he quashed it if he thought the State did. Also, Williams did not speak to the issue where he informed Justice Insanally and the President in writing that he would have handled the case, but then kept asking for adjournments each time the matter was called. As such, he left the matter to be handled by Kissoon, whom he thought was working against the State while working for the State. Kissoon has told Kaieteur News that Williams requested several adjournments from the court, lasting over one month. She said that after a few adjournments, Justice Insanally directed that the matter had to proceed. Kaieteur News had sought to speak to the AG about these and other matters, but he refused to do so. Just as the AG said in his statement yesterday, the PPP/ C Cabinet had withdrawn its no objection to the awarding of the contract. But this was after Cabinet reportedly learnt that the equipment arrived in Guyana even before the contract was awarded, suggesting that Guytrac may have been given a heads up about the need for the equipment and was further assured that it would have been able to secure the

contract. As a result, the Donald Ramotar administration wanted the contract rescinded. A Cabinet memorandum to that effect, dated 17th December 2014, was sent to NPTAB and NDIA. Cabinet stated explicitly that it was rescinding it’s no objection and ordered that an evaluation be redone. It is not clear, if the evaluation was ever redone. However, according to a court document in this newspaper’s possession, on March 3, 2015, NPTAB “legally terminated” the contract in writing. The reason given to Guytrac was the absence of a security performance bond. NDIA claimed that even before the contract was terminated, Guytrac was informed that it needed to provide the critical performance bond. After the contract was terminated, Guytrac took NPTAB to court. There are customs documents proving that the pieces of equipment were in Guyana before the contract was awarded to Guytrac. Nevertheless, the coalition government has already petitioned the National Assembly for approval of the $226M in a supplementary paper. The paper is still to be considered.

Shippers get new GRA deadline amid delays in electronic manifests
A
new Customs sys tem that is de signed to reduce paperwork and modernize the processing to allow for the faster release of containers is facing some difficulties. A number of shippers who were given deadlines to submit electronic manifests have been facing problems. According to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), based on discussions with stakeholders, it had issued notices on the need for submission of electronic manifests for the implementation of the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) World. ASYCUDA World, GRA explained, has commenced in a phased approach with the E-Manifest module, and re-

agency disclosed that shipping lines and local agents were engaged in discussions and notified of the require-
ment to submit electronic manifests in a prescribed format with effect from March 1, 2018. This must be submitted
at least 24 hours before the arrival of the vessel in Guyana. However, many shipping lines have not been forthcoming with the required submissions and have requested additional time for various reasons. “The GRA wishes to remind all stakeholders that non-submission of the required documentation could result in delays to the timely processing and release of goods,” the authority said in a statement. Because of the delays, Commissioner-General Godfrey Statia has approved for the cut-off date to be extended to May 13, 2018. After this date, the required electronic documents must be submitted, as there will be no further extensions, GRA warned.
“Submission of electronic manifests is mandatory under the provisions of the Customs (Amendment) Regulations 2017 and Section 67 of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01. Carriers, Carriers’ Agents and Consolidators who did not receive the manifest training are advised to contact the ASYCUDA World National Project Team in an effort to facilitate the relevant training.” Over the years, importers especially have been complaining of the maddening delays at the wharves and the constant movement to and from the Customs Department. GRA has been moving to introduced a modernized system, as part of a bigger plan to improve its services and boost its collections.
35 E’bo women trained to become better local government leaders
T
he Ministry of Social Protection, through the Guyana Women Leadership Institute, recently laid the platform for women empowerment in Region Two, following a two-day workshop on local government for Women. Representative of The Guyana Women Leadership institute, Tricia Watson, said that the institute is geared at empowering women across the various regions in Guyana. The workshop which was hosted in the Board Room of the Regional Democratic Council last Thursday and Friday, was attended by some 35 women from different designations within the Region. The women were empowered under four key areas; laws of local government, leadership, organizational skills and team building. The aim of the

The workshop was opened up not just for women who wanted to be part of local government, but

She added, however, “because we want women t o b e p a r t o f t h e ir community development, we think that we should empower women, we should create the platform for them to be empowered so that they can be a part of local government and community work…. The feedback on the other hand was positive.

The home of a family of Lot 28 Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice was completely ravaged yesterday after a fire ripped through the building destroying whatever was in its path. Sharon Persaud, her husband Jairam and their four children ages ranging from 18 to 2, managed to escape after scaling a window and landing on a shed attached to the lower flat of the house. Persaud, her husband and their 18-year-old, 11year-old and 10-year-old received burns on their feet. “Be prepared to share information with the media” - says Minister Cummings “The media must be seen as our friend and not our foe.” This was the assertion of Minister within the Public Health Ministry, Dr. Karen Cummings, as she addressed a communication consultation forum at the Marriott Hotel yesterday. According to the Minister, “It cannot be over emphasised that the media plays a critical role in the dissemination of information to large audiences.” For this very reason, she stressed that “establishing a mutually beneficial media relationship is crucial to the success of our communication activities.” Minister Cummings made it clear yesterday before an audience of health workers that “we must be accommodating to the media and be prepared to share information we believe is essential for the public to know.” She however noted that although it is important to establish healthy relationships with the media, “we must also be responsible and understand that communicating with the media must not be done in an indiscriminate manner.” Supporting this notion was the Ministry’s Programme Head for Public Relations and Health Promotion, Mr. Terrence Esseboom, who added, “we should see the media as a friend...too often people see the media as a foe and are always afraid.” Minister Cummings in her continued effort to qualify the importance of forging good media relationships underscored the importance of accurate messaging. This is light of her conviction that “accurate messaging makes for clear and concise communication” thus the need for careful attention to be paid to details at all times. “We need to ensure that that our messages are devoid of mistakes of any kind; sloppy writing and poor command of the English Language must not be tolerated,” Minister Cummings warned. Such shortcomings should be prevented at all times, the Minister emphasized, even as she revealed that “apart from being a blemish

But according to the Public Health Minister, “communication does not just happen; it must be organised, developed and built.” She moreover challenged health officials gathered yesterday to “let your collective efforts build the best and most effective communication strategy that will serve us well.” The Minister was speaking at a ‘Development of the National Communication Strategic Plan’ consultation which is being held in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation. The forum which is slated to continue today, will see efforts being made at defining and prioritising the focus areas of a new Communication Strategic Plan for the Public Health Ministry. Added to this, keen attention will be given to crafting key messages and discussing the ideal communication channels as well as the need for collaboration in ensuring that the right messages are disseminated to the public at the right time.

ive days after a 56year-old contractor stabbed and killed a bandit who attacked and tried to rob him of his caged bird, the man was yesterday brought before the court and charged with manslaughter. Peter Jansen, of North Sophia, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. Particulars of the charge alleged that on May 1 at Sophia, Greater Georgetown, he unlawfully killed Shelton Jordan. Jansen was represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmi Rahamat who in her application to secure bail for her client told the court that Jansen is a respectable member of his community. The lawyer further told the court that her client has an unblemished record since he is a peacemaker. The lawyer added that on the day in question, her client was only trying to defend himself after Jordan attempted to rob him of his caged bird. Rahamat further told the

pleaded with the guards to let him in. But the guards, she added, refused, citing that it would be against protocol. By this time a scissorswielding Jordan had caught up to the man, demanding that he hand over the bird, even as he threatened to cause him harm. The court further heard that after Jordan caught up with Jansen he inflicted a stab wound to his leg with a pair of scissors. Rahamat disclosed that her client did what the constitution allowed him to do and that is to defend himself and property. Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant but asked that conditions be attached. The Magistrate after listening to both sides released Jansen on $250,000 bail. Conditions of the bail are that he lodge his passport at the court. Jansen was also instructed to report to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost every Friday until the completion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI). The matter was adjourned until May 28.

Palestinians condemn UAE, Bahrain Neymar attends PSG training to step up recovery from metatarsal injury presence in cycle race in Israel RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinians have expressed outrage at teams from the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for taking part in the opening legs of the Giro d’Italia cycling race in Israel over the weekend, which they say undermined Arab solidarity with their cause. The presence of the Gulf states’ teams in the top cycling race — which has now moved on to its home territory in Italy — broke a boycott of Israel in place since the start of the Arab-Israeli conflict in 1948. In an unusually barbed statement to a fellow Arab country, the Palestinian Olympic Committee said their participation was “a stab in the back to the great sacrifices made by the Palestinian people ... and a free service for the occupation.” UAE officials did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment and Bahrain’s ministry of information referred questions to the team itself. Neither of the teams immediately responded to emailed inquiries. None of the cyclists in either of the 8-men teams — Bahrain–Merida and UAE Team Emirates — appeared to be Bahraini or Emirati citizens and were almost all European, according to profiles on the event’s official website. However, in an important break with traditional Arab protocols on events in Israel, the riders wore jerseys emblazoned with national colors and brand names of sponsors, state-owned Emirates
Airlines and the Bahrain Petroleum Company, the official twitter accounts for the team websites showed. Individual Israel athletes have periodically participated in sporting events in Gulf Arab states, such as a tennis player at the Qatar Open in January. But team participation and the display of flags have previously been rare. The move comes as Palestinian anger has mounted over the United States moving its embassy to Jerusalem, expected next week, and Palestinians mark the 70th anniversary of what they call the “Nakba” or “Catastrophe” when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes when the state of Israel was created in 1948. The Gulf teams’ participation in a race in Israel may signal thawing ties among the U.S.-allied states who share a common enemy in Iran but drew some accusations that they were abandoning the Palestinian cause. Along with most other Arab and Muslim states, the two countries do not recognize Israel out of solidarity with Palestinians who seek a state in Gaza and the Israelioccupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. Malak Hassan, founder of a 3000-strong club Cycling Palestine, condemned the move and said Israeli checkpoints barred her and fellow bike enthusiasts from traveling freely. “We were shocked ... Israel is trying to polish its image by hosting this race,” she told Reuters in
the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah. “The UAE and Bahrain know a lot about our cause and there was no need for us to explain to them why they shouldn’t take part,” she added. “NORMALIZATION” Saudi Arabia, the powerful main ally of the two smaller Gulf states, has been working closely with the United States on a new Mideast peace plan in a bid to solve the 70-yearold conflict as Israeli and Arab worries rise over Tehran’s regional influence. In November, an Israeli cabinet member disclosed covert contacts with Riyadh, a rare acknowledgment of long-rumored secret dealings which the kingdom still denies. Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, said in a published interview last month that Israelis were entitled to live peacefully on their own land, in a rare acknowledgement of Israel’s right to exist by a senior Arab leader. While official ties may be quietly improving, the diplomatic moves are viewed with suspicion by many Arabs for whom Jerusalem and Palestinian statehood are treasured causes. “It’s a mistake,” Abdullah al-Shayji, a professor at Kuwait University, wrote on his Twitter account about the Gulf teams racing in Israel. “Normalization with the occupation entity should be rejected, no matter what form it takes.”
ESPN - Neymar attended Paris Saint-Germain’s training session at the Camp des Loges on Saturday as he nears a return from a broken bone in his right foot. The Brazil international had been recuperating in his native Brazil since undergoing surgery on a fractured fifth metatarsal and returned to Paris on Friday to complete the final stage of his rehabilitation. He was not present as PSG were held to a 2-2 draw away at Amiens on Friday but was at training on Saturday to finally reunite with his teammates and get back to work. Neymar spent most of his time in the gym, but he could not resist a few touches of the ball as he juggled barefoot on the grass. Brazil national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar told L’Equipe that “if Neymar is in a position to play for PSG before the end of the season, then he will play.” Neymar is aiming to be cleared to return by May 17, meaning he could feature in PSG’s final game of the season at Caen, and that may not be his final appearance for the club. Twitter Ads info and privacy Amid persistent links to a move away from PSG, TF1’s Telefoot reported that Neymar will be staying in Paris next season, but Bixente Lizarazu, the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 winner and one of the show’s analysts, wants to see him show more affection. “Neymar, show your
Neymar heart,” Lizarazu said. “The PSG supporters need signs of affection from you.” However, not everybody is that thrilled to see Neymar return. Christian, who played for PSG from 1999-2001, told L’Equipe that he believes the forward’s behaviour has been disrespectful and thought he should have been in attendance for the 7-1 win over Monaco last month that gave PSG the Ligue 1 title. “Not being with the squad during the title-winning match was a strategic error,” Christian said. “It was a lack of respect towards his teammates, the club and the fans. “It is Neymar’s fault — PSG are not firm enough with him and the media give him too much power. I hope that he will explain and apologise.” Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Luis Suarez rejected the idea that his former teammate left Camp Nou solely for financial reasons.
Speaking with Radio Rincon, Suarez said Neymar’s exit was difficult to take but that it was a personal decision. “Neymar’s departure hurt us,” Suarez said. “We were teammates, friends, but he took the decision with his soul and conscience. However, we knew that he would be missed. “I do not believe that he went for the money, but instead the objectives that he wants to achieve in Paris.” Despite Suarez’s beliefs, former Barca and Lyon midfielder Edmilson told Cadena Ser that he thinks Neymar could leave PSG for Real Madrid this summer. “It would not surprise me much if, after the World Cup, Neymar left for Madrid,” he said. “I don’t know how it would happen, but it would not surprise me because he did not leave Barca in a very good way.”

MADRID (AP) — Novak Djokovic notched an encouraging win in his comeback from a right elbow injury when he beat Kei Nishikori 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the Madrid Open yesterday. Djokovic broke serve late in each set to get past the 20th-ranked Nishikori after nearly two hours in the Magic Box. Djokovic hasn’t made it to the quarterfinals in his previous five tournaments this year, admitting he returned to tennis too quickly. In his last event, he lost in the third round in Monte Carlo, where Nishikori reached the final. Djokovic was aggressive from the start, hitting 26 winners against Nishikori, who has made at least the Madrid quarterfinals for the last five years. He was a finalist in
2014, losing to Rafael Nadal. “The draw was such that we had to face in the first round, which is a bit strange,” Djokovic said. “But it was a good opening match.” Maria Sharapova, who won in Madrid in 2014, made it to the last 16 by defeating Irina-Camelia Begu 7-5, 6-1 in only her second match since the Australian Open. She has been dealing with a left forearm injury. “It was a lot of hard work,” Sharapova said of her match. “Being down a break to start off both of those sets didn’t make things easy for me. That will certainly help me moving forward.” Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki edged past Ashleigh Barty 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Wozniacki reached the 2009 final on
debut and hasn’t been close since. “I was lucky to get away with it in that third set,” the second-seeded Wozniacki said. Milos Raonic defeated Nicolas Kicker 6-3, 6-2 to set up a second-round encounter with third-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, while Richard Gasquet beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2 to advance to play qualifier Dusan Lajovic, who got past Karen Khachanov 63, 6-2. In a first-round match between Frenchmen, Benoit Paire hit 39 winners to defeat 18th-ranked Lucas Pouille 62, 6-3, advancing to face 19year-old Denis Shapovalov of Canada, who got past Tennys Sandgren of the U.S. 6-1, 6-4.

NBC Sports - The Golden State Warriors looked to be having a good time in the first half of Game 4 on Sunday against the New Orleans Pelicans. They forced 19 total turnovers, and Kevin Durant was unguardable. Then, the defending champs locked up the Pelicans in the third quarter and roared off to a win, 118-92. The Pelicans trailed by as much as 18 points in the first half, with the Warriors dominating thanks to clever interior passing. In the first quarter it felt as though the Warriors had seen something very specific on film from Game 3, dribbling diagonally across the painted area as weakside cutters moved across the baseline to receive passes and put home layups behind the New Orleans defense. Meanwhile, Golden State pushed the Pelicans out of the pace they wanted to play, almost baiting the home team into sets, then deftly rotating on defense to contest or block shots. For much of the first half, Durant looked unstoppable. He finished the second quarter with 20 points, leading all scorers. Midway through
the second period, things got a little testy between both teams and the officiating crew. In turn, Smoothie King Arena turned up the volume, and the fan support perhaps got the Pelicans out of their funk. New Orleans was able to make a little run during the final minutes of the second half to close the gap to 61-54 in favor of the Warriors at the break. Of course, as has been the case many times in years past, Golden State turned up the heat to start the second half. Where Durant’s offensive showing was impressive, the Warriors came out even stronger defensively in the third quarter. Golden State reduced New Orleans’ 3-point shooting percentage to just 15.4 percent for the game, allowing the home team 19 points in the first period of the second half. The Warriors continued to hum on offence as well. Their high-low passing was on point, and by the end of regulation Golden State had racked up 28 assists — six more than in Game 3. The result was a 26-point win and a 3-1 series lead as we head back to Oakland for Game 5. For New Orleans it was Anthony Davis who led the
way with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and one steal. E’Twaun Moore added 20 points. Jrue Holiday scored 19 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Rajon Rondo scored just six points but grabbed 11 rebounds and six dimes. Golden State was led by Durant, who finished with 38 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Stephen Curry had 23 points, two assists, and one rebound. Draymond Greenand Andre Iguodala were helpful as they combined to go fourof-9 from 3-point range. This is what happens when you play the best team in the league. In the first half, it appeared as though Durant was unstoppable and that the Pelicans were simply off their offensive game. Instead of trying to ramp up their shooting, Golden State did what championship teams do — clamp down. The Warriors’ ability to shift to a higher gear on defense is what makes them so formidable, and will make them that much harder to beat in order to stave off elimination for New Orleans. Game 5 is today in California.

GDF defeat Pepsi Hornets 26-13 to stay top of points table When the Bounty Farm Ltd/Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) XVs club competition continued on Sunday at the National Park, Guyana Defence Force defeated Pepsi Hornets 26-13, to extend their lead at the top of the points table with 28 points. It was the army men’s first game of the tournament’s second round, which began last week and they were led with tries from Aluko Venture and Dillon DeAbreu who had one apiece. National rugger, Avery Corbin, took the game away from the reigning 7s champions, Hornets, with two tries to his name. Joseph Rahaman nailed two conversions, while Cloyd Prowell buried the other to stretch
the soldiers’ advantage. A penalty by Ryan Gonsalves and tries by Jason Tyrell and Delroy Gordon were not enough for the Hornets to secure their first win of the league’s second round after gifting second placed Panthers a walkover, the previous week. The league will continue this weekend with the Hornets facing the Police Falcons on Saturday. Meanwhile, Panthers (23 points) that defeated Caribs 69-15 on Saturday, will look to defeat GDF in their anticipated scrum fest on Sunday, in a bid to cut the top of the table deficit.
Led by a brilliant all-round performance from 32 year-old left-arm pacer Erva Giddings, Defending Champions Berbice got their 2018 campaign off to a winning start when they crushed Essequibo by 161 runs at Lusignan yesterday in a rain affected GCB Senior Women’s 50-over InterCounty match which was reduced to 24 over per side. Player-of-the-match Giddings scored an unbeaten 45 which lasted 46 balls and included three boundaries before returning to take 5-3 with her left-arm pace to crown a fine all-rounder display on a slow track. An even undefeated 50 from 24-year-old National batter Ketana Mentore from 50 balls and decorated with three fours and a six, shared in a 111-run unfinished sixth wicket stand with Giddings as the pair joined forces with Berbice in a spot of bother on 62-5. Opener Sheneta Grimmond chipped in with a 23-ball 25 to rally their team to 173-5 in 24 overs. Twenty-five-year-old allrounder Mayon Boson, who was bowled by West Indies Pacer Tremayne Smartt for a duck to start the Essequibo slide, captured 4-23 as Essequibo were forced to include four players from the East Coast of Demerara and were bowled out for 13 runs as eight batters failed to score.Last year at Everest against the same opposition, Essequibo were routed for an embarrassing 15 from 37 balls to set the record for lowest total in Female Senior Inter-
Erva Giddings destroyed E’bo yesterday at Lugisnan
County Cricket and yesterday sank to an all-time low, especially since they were beaten by over 160 runs in a 24 over game. Giddings got support from left-arm spinner Diana Prahald (2-1) as they did the damage with the ball for Berbice. On Sunday Essequibo
were bundled out for a paltry 38 in their first game against Demerara at Bourda and their performance at this level keeps plunging lower and lower with each match. Demerara will clash with Berbice tomorrow in the deciding game which will be played at Lusignan. (Sean Devers)
Woods slumps to 55th after birdie-free final round
A scrum during the GDF versus Hornets game which GDF won to extend their lead at the top of the points ranking with 28 points.
(Reuters) - Tiger Woods had his first birdie-free round since 2014 to finish equal 55th at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina on Sunday, his second-worst result of the year. Woods closed with a 74 to finish at two-over-par 286 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, 14 strokes behind winner Jason Day. It was only the 11th time in more than 1,000 rounds as a professional on the PGA Tour that Woods failed to record a birdie or eagle. He again lamented poor putting but also failed to hit his approach shots close
enough to the hole. He had only one birdie chance from inside 10 feet — a five-footer that he missed at the par-five 10th. “I hit the ball halfway decent today ... so I wasn’t disappointed with that,” Woods told reporters. “Again, just did not putt well and didn’t make a birdie today. I got shut out. It was just a bad week.” In his seventh start of the year, Woods, 42, is well into a full-throttled comeback after last April’s successful back surgery. He has made the cut in all but one start, and seemed to
be nearing his old form when he contended for victory in consecutive events in Florida in March. Woods was rated among the favorites at the U.S. Masters in April, but finished equal 32nd and blamed poor iron play. He used a new set of irons at Quail Hollow, his own signature brand. While hardly knocking the pins down on Sunday, he hit his irons well enough for the most part over the four rounds to suggest he is adjusting quickly to them. Miggins is Champion Boxer as GDF retain team title
Champion Boxer Troy Miggins pounds away at GDF Gym mate Jevon Gomes in their Lightweight Final. Stories and photos by Sean Devers
T
he final night of GBA’s Andrew Lewis National Novices Boxing Championships began close to two hours late and climaxed in the wee hours of Monday morning with GDF’s Lightweight Troy Miggins being adjudged Champion Boxer as GDF retained their team title. Last year the ‘Blackout’ came towards the end of the Championships which were completed the next day in West Demerara but this year the power retuned in time for the ‘Nuff Cuff’ Event to finish at the National Gymnasium where the first two nights were held. Maybe the ‘Blackout’ and the threat of rain affected attendance but the smallest crowd of the Championships saw some entertaining fights and a most boring one which
brought the curtains down on a successful Boxing Card. The GDF pair of Super Heavyweights (Shamear Mingo and Coen Bobb) ran out of gas in the opening round and spent most of the next two rounds waltzing around each other and rarely threw a punch. In the end Mingo was declared the winner. Pulsating music in between bouts kept die-hard fans entertained, while as ‘big boys’ stepped into the Ring the GDF Drums began to make its presence felt. The much anticipated Exhibition bout between Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Keevin Allicock and Kelvin Moore showed off the tremendous hand speed of Allicock and the skill of Moore. The female Exhibition fight involved Asata Eastman and the more technically correct Alisha Jackman.
Horace Ceres (left) takes a right from Kevin Isaacs who won by TKO.
The opening bout of the night was the final of the Yo u t h B a n t a m w e i g h t division in which both Boxers took the first 60 seconds to ‘feel out’ each other with few punches being thrown. Talented South Paw Isaiah Moore from FYF initiated the action with some clinical right jabs to the head of Junior Hyman as the tempo picked up with both pugilists fighting at close range. The intensity picked up in the second round with both Boxers trading punches with Moore, who slipped and fell to the canvas, getting the better of the exchanges. Hyman, representing VBG, came out for the final round with aggressive intent, counter-punching; but the 18-year-old Moore was equal to the task and gained the judge’s decision. The second fight, an Elite Bantamweight contest,
Youth Champion Isaiah Moore goes toe to toe with Junior Hyman in their Youth Bantamweight Final which Moore won by points verdict. saw the GDF pair Kevin Isaacs and Horace Ceres going head to head with Ceres throwing a flurry of wild swings with most of them missing its target. Isaacs began the ‘pepper’ his man with body digs and upper-cuts but Ceres enjoyed brief success when he caught Isaacs on the ropes with a three-shot combo. The second round saw Ceres getting two standing 8 counts and the fight was soon stopped in 1:30 seconds of the round after Isaacs inflicted a merciless battering on Ceres who was wobbling on the ropes. In another all GDF encounter, Andrew Griffith defeated Jamal LaRose on points. LaRose was not short of punches but most of them seemed to be slapping his opponent and he was soon caught with crisp left Jabs which penetrated his defences and a standing 8 count was given by the

referee. A ferocious right hook in the second round almost took off LaRose’s head guard and another standing 8 count was administered. With the fans urging them on in the final round both Boxers looked totally exhausted and at times stood motionless and punches when were thrown lacked any power and looked like a slow motion replay. Griffith won on points. FYF’s Alex Murray’s introduction by the new Ring Announcer, who did a wonderful job, was greeted with a resounding roar from his fans. And the Light Heavyweight Final with Angel Anys, who advanced vie a walk-over, lived to the hype with Murray’s Jabs being out of the top drawer, while his fast and at times four-punch combinations were bang on target and stunned Anys who was given
a standing 8-count. Anys retaliated with a one, two which forced Murray onto the ropes before a brutal right cross from Murray staggered Anys who was given another standing 8 count. Murray connected to the head, it was a clinical destruction and all over in 1:36 second of the first round in the shortest fight of the night. In the other fights, Troy Miggins defeated fellow GDF Jevon Gomes in the Lightweight contest, Orlando Grenville got a points decision against Jeremiah Jackman in an all GDF Junior Welterweight affair, GDF’s Astion Niles’s straight right stopped REP’s Thadius Perry in 1:47 seconds in the first round of their Light Heavyweight clash and GDF’s Osbert Robinson forced his Gym mate Joram Fraser to throw in the towel at the end of the first round.

pener Rajendra Chandrika struck an unbeaten half century to guide Enterprise Busta Sports Club to a three-wicket victory over Anthony XI when the East Coast Cricket Committee T20 tournament commenced yesterday. Chandrika carried his bat for a top score of 62 as host Enterprise Busta Sport Club successfully chased 110, ending on 111-7 in 18.4 overs. Earlier, Anthony XI lost eight wickets after they were inserted in hazy conditions. Opener Charwayne McPherson led with an attractive 58 which included five towering sixes. He and Adrian Hinds added 22 for the opening stand before Hinds was bowled by Bishram Samaroo for nine. McPherson then added a further 25 for the second wicket with Mark Ramsammy who was dismissed for 14. However, Enterprise bowlers maintained a steady line and managed to peg back their opponents as wickets fell at regular intervals. But McPherson got some support from Franchiot Duncan who made 10 down the order to propel his team to their eventual total. Rohan Mangal who extracted considerable turn from the moist pitch claimed 3-16, while Vivian Albert had 2-12 and Chanderpaul Singh 2-25. Enterprise Busta SC started off their reply in fine fashion as Chandrika and Arif Habib put on 35 for the opening stand before Habib was bowled by off-spinner Raphael Singh for
Rajendra Chandrika 32 after hitting two fours and one six. The home team then suffered a huge blow as Bhaskar Yadram was caught at short midwicket in an attempt to charge pacer Duncan off the first ball he had faced. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, but the level-headed Chandrika batted with maturity and executed a number of well timed drives to take him team home. He struck six fours in his well complied innings, while Samaroo finished unbeaten on seven. Singh claimed 39. (Zaheer Mohamed)

Its Pat Holder time!’ along with his administrative contribution to motorsport during the ceremony. When the iconic add was recited in the Church, it brought a smile to many faces for those who remembered hearing it on the local radio stations. And that was one of many memories that were shared in a moving hour tribute as the last rights to Holder; a racer, racing administrator and family man. Many of Holder’s friends through motor racing and other avenues were on hand to honour their fallen friend who had become synonymous to motorsport in Guyana. He was remembered as an outstanding family man who often contributed selflessly to charity in their times of need. Holder provided
