Union questions hiring of foreign labour on T&T highway project PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The National Workers Union (NWU) is calling on Government and others to explain why a Brazilian firm building the Point Fortin Highway is being allowed to import hundreds of South American workers to operate as truck drivers, excavator operators, graders and even masons and carpenters. The NWU said OAS Construtora – which is at the centre of bribery allegations in several Latin American countries – is bringing in workers from Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela to do jobs that citizens of Trinidad and Tobago could do. And it demanded an explanation from the National Infrastructure Development Company (NIDCO), the Ministry of National Security and the Licensing Authority. “Not only are these workers doing jobs that citizens of T&T have been doing for decades, but are, in fact, displacing nationals of this country,” the NWU said in a statement issued Monday. NIDCO president Carson

(Photo: National Workers Union) Charles was previously reported in the media as saying the South American workers were brought in because of a labour shortage in critical areas needed for the TT$7.4 billion (US$1.2 billion) project. However, the NWU is not buying that explanation. “So, all of a sudden citizens of T&T no longer drive Heavy T vehicles, are unable to operate construction equipment, to do masonry, carpentry and steel bending. Mr. Charles must explain why the sudden influx of hundreds of these workers,” the union said. “He must reveal what are
the conditions to which these workers are subjected, how does their remuneration compare to that of locals doing the same job, how much does it cost to house them, where are they housed, why are locals being forced to train them, whether nationals are being terminated in favour of these workers? “Carson Charles has a duty to answer these questions because more than $7 billion in public funds is being expended on this controversial project and it is the right of citizens to know how their money is being spent . . .”
Britain could face second election before Christmas, warns deputy PM (Reuters) - Britain faces a disruptive second election before Christmas if either of the two main parties try to govern alone as minority governments after tomorrow’s ballot, Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister and Liberal Democrat leader, warned yesterday. Two days before the country’s closest election since the 1970s, Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party are level in most polls with neither on track to win outright. That raises the prospect of another coalition, something Britain has had since 2010, or of one of the two main parties trying to govern as a minority administration relying on smaller parties for support on a vote-by-vote basis. Clegg, whose centrist party has been in coalition with Cameron’s Conservatives for the last five years, wants to form another coalition with whoever wins the most seats and votes in tomorrow’s election. He therefore has an interest in talking up the risks of minority governments. He said a minority government would turn into “a shambles” because it would be vulnerable to the whims
of smaller parties such as the Scottish National Party and the anti-EU UK Independence Party who would demand “sweeteners” in return for their short-term support. “If they try to stagger through with a messy and unstable minority government instead of putting the country first then they will risk all the hard work and sacrifices
people have made over the last five years,” said Clegg, referring to the Conservatives and Labour. “The last thing Britain needs is a second election before Christmas. But that is exactly what will happen if (Labour leader) Ed Miliband and David Cameron put their own political interest ahead of the national interest.”

No private settlement should be allowed for certain offenses A few years, a domestic help alleged that she was abducted by her employer who happened to belong to a wealthy family. She was reportedly taken to a location, tied to a post and beaten while being questioned about the disappearance of jewelry belonging to the wife of her employer. The employers were
charged, as I recall, with abduction. This is a most serious offence under the laws of Guyana and carries long custodial sentences. I am not aware of what happened in that case. In fact, it seems as if it just dropped off the radar. It could be that the parties concerned reached a settlement, but there was
no report about this in the media. These private settlements subject justice to the wiles of the rich. Those who can afford to reach a settlement escape the claws of justice; while those who are poor are sent to languish in jail. In common parlance this is referred to as “money talks and bullshxx walks”.

Private settlements should be rejected in serious offences. The commission of a crime is not just a matter between the complainant and the accused. The commission of a crime represents an offence against the wider society and therefore the Court needs to take a more stern stance against these so- called private settlements that are made in serious criminal offences, because when the rich and powerful can use their wealth to reach agreements with their accusers, it undermines the system of justice in a country. If a complainant decides not to proceed in a matter, it is difficult but not impossible for the prosecution to proceed. The State should be in a position to insist that in relation to serious offences, such as kidnapping and abduction, that the complainant should be compelled to give evidence regardless of what settlement has been arrived at. I believe there is precedent for this within our judicial system. Many years ago, as I recall, a magistrate refused to entertain a settlement between the complainant and the accused. A most serious thing is alleged to have taken place on Monday outside of a shoe
store on Regent Street. An employee of that store is alleged to have been abducted by private enforcers, blindfolded and taken to a location where he was allegedly beaten and questioned about the disappearance of raw gold from the home of a relative. This is a serious offence, one that warrants prosecution. The authorities should not brook any departmental settlements, because it is the availability of such options that promotes the emergence of private enforcers, a deadly threat to law and order in any society. This threat of private enforcers is not just restricted to matters involving persons. It can become political. After the 1997 elections, thugs believed to be affiliated with the PNC allegedly abducted an Albouystown
man who collected discarded drink bottles. These political enforcers believed the most preposterous story, that the man was storing ballot boxes in his home. These political enforcers were said to have taken the man to Congress Place where it was said that of all persons who were involved in his interrogation was the then leader of that party, Desmond Hoyte. Abduction is a serious offence and if private settlements are allowed in such cases, it could lead to serious problems not just in relation to private disputes but also in relation to political disputes. No settlement should be allowed in such cases. Those who commit such acts should face the full brunt of the law.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
Ramotar offers the biggest reason why his party will lose Guyanese who see and h e a r D o n a l d R a m o t a r ’s explanations during the present election campaign of political misconduct of PPP leaders must surely have asked themselves; “Is this the man in charge of our country?” Ramotar ’s mediocrity may not be as threatening to civilization in Guyana as J a g d e o ’s tribal and tyrannical insanities but it does serve to damage the face and body of a country in the 21st century. M r. R a m o t a r ’s mediocrity deserves the harshest of condemnations because he is the President of Guyana. No nation deserves to be led by a man so poor in reasoning. The point that must be made is that this president does not stop to think. If and when he does so he would see that yesterday he placed a country in Africa, the next day, he puts in Europe. He has no idea that the day before he said it was in Africa. It is as bad as this with
Ramotar. Before last Saturday, Ramotar was the only PPP leader who refused to comment on Anilgate – the scandal involving Nandlall’s intention to apply violence to Kaieteur News recorded in a telephone conversation with KN staffer, Len Gildarie. Mr. Ramotar insisted that the purported voice of Nandlall had to be authenticated and that the item has been sent for testing. There was never a word about the results of that test. A few days ago in a radio interview, Ramotar defended Nandlall by saying that Nandlall was secretly taped by a school friend he trusted. Ramotar has now accepted that it was Nandlall’s voice but what he did not state is if he conceded that fact due to the authentication process or whether it just flew into his head to accept that it was Nandlall’s voice. But knowing Ramotar he would not give a sensible
answer if asked. Next we have Slap and Strip Bheri and Ramotar’s most comical descent into the arena of clowns. Really, aren’t Guyanese embarrassed to see their president so intellectually enfeebled? Ramotar defended Bheri Ramsaran’s depraved mistreatment of Sherlina Nageer by casting aspersions on the woman’s character. He accused Nageer of setting up Ramsaran because she knew he was temperamental. He is saying that Nageer knew Bheri would have been profane and violently threatening so she goaded him. The stupidity in that viewpoint is how did he know that Nageer knew Ramsaran that well? Secondly, why if Ramsaran is that vulnerable to giving off violent semantics, there haven’t been previous episodes with Ramsaran? A television crew walked into his office during a meeting he was in and asked him questions regarding an allegation of
sexual harassment and he did not behave erratically. But if you think this was a sordid manifestation of Ramotar’s mediocrity here is more. When it was put to him that Ramsaran could not have been set-up because the next day, he repeated more nasty vilifications of Nageer in a meeting with health workers, Ramotar said the words were taken out of context. Ramsaran is taped scandalizing Nageer’s name in unambiguous language claiming he could get “his women” to beat up Nageer and that Nageer has rabies and Donald Ramotar says the words have been taken out of context. Next, Ramotar has adopted the fiction in Jagdeo’s mind that during the 2011 election campaign he knew about early morning
chants by APNU people urging that Indians be chased out of office. That was never mentioned by Jagdeo, Ramotar or any PPP leader or supporter or even the plethora of PPP aligned media houses. Jagdeo brought it up in the 2015 campaign and the silly persona in Ramotar has echoed Jagdeo’s fiction that it existed. This is the man of the moment that is the President of Guyana. Ramotar’s take on Anilgate, Jagdeo-racebaiting insanity and Slap and Strip Bheri is a sad indictment of this country. It is sad not, in the context of Ramotar’s current position on the three episodes but in whom the man Ramotar is and what is likely to be the shape of his governance should he be reelected. In endorsing some of the nastiest episodes in
Frederick Kissoon Guyanese history, it is clear to any schoolboy that PPP leaders are not going to discipline their colleagues for the committal of the most repugnant descent into criminal immorality. What is frightening about Ramotar’s barefaced support for Nandlall and his tape scandal, Ramsaran and his anti-women cruelty and Jagdeo bestial racism is that it is coming at a time when Ramotar looks like he is losing power and needs every vote he can get. But the madness of power has destroyed the PPP a long time ago. Ramotar personifies the comical side of that psychosis.
Bagotville murder…
Suspect nabbed by police while job hunting Alleged wife-killer Alan Barker was captured yesterday in Sophia while seeking employment from a resident who recognized him and tipped off the police. A source said that Barker was taken into custody after leading police on a chase from ‘B’ Field to ‘C’ Field, Sophia. Barker has been on the run since allegedly stabbing his 28-year-old wife, Donessa Barker to death at Bagotville, West Bank Demerara last Thursday. But Barker might still have been at large hadn’t the victim’s close friend, Shaneiza Clark, sent pictures of the suspect to her friends. One of the friends happened to be a ‘B’ Field, Sophia resident who Barker allegedly visited at around 09.00 hrs yesterday and asked for a job. According to Shaneiza Clarke, the resident immediately recognized the fugitive and ‘hired’ him to do some masonry work. According to reports, while Barker was busy at his new job, his ‘employer’ contacted the police. A source said that when the cops arrived, Barker ran from ‘B’ Field to ‘C’ Field, where police captured him. On being arrested, the suspect reportedly denied being Barker. However, Clarke said that she turned up at the Turkeyen Police Station and positively identified Barker.

Donessa Barker
He is likely to be charged this week. Shaneiza Clarke expressed relief that the suspect is in custody, since she had alleged that Barker had sent threatening calls to her while he was on the run. The slain woman’s cousin, Dumissa Thomas, expressed similar sentiments. “The whole family is relieved. At least we can get some closure and justice,” she said. Barker, also called ‘Nabine’, collapsed on the front stairs of Clarke’s Lot 21, Inner Bagotville home last Thursday after sustaining multiple stab wounds about the body. The woman alleged that Donessa Barker’s husband, who had sneaked into the
house, escaped through a window after attacking his spouse. She claimed that the man was angry because Donessa wanted to end the relationship. The couple got married last year and has a daughter who would be two years-old in June. Relatives said that Donessa had lived at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, but moved with her husband to Bagotville about a month ago. Barker’s cousin, Dumisa Thomas, described the suspect as an abusive husband who had once doused his wife with hot water. She said that Donessa had however denied that her husband had inflicted the injury.

OAS, Commonwealth elections observers arrive The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS/EOM) for the General and Regional Elections in Guyana on May 11 yesterday began its final deployment in Georgetown. The delegation, headed by the former Foreign Minister of Belize Lisa Shoman, who was designated by Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, comprises 23 observers from 13 countries (Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States). The first members of the Mission arrived in Guyana on May 2, following a preliminary visit in mid-April to learn about the preparations for the elections, an OAS statement said. “The Mission will focus its observation on electoral organization, electoralpolitical financing and the equal participation of men and women in the electoral process. It will also gather information about the status of the recommendations made in the last OAS/EOM in 2011.” The OAS/EOM will be meeting with electoral

Rohee declares May 11,
A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee has declared May, 11 a public holiday. This was announced on Monday via a press release from the Home Affairs Ministry. The Ministry said that “in pursuance of the powers conferred on the Hon. Minister of Home Affairs by Section 6 of the Public Holiday Act, the Minister has declared Monday, May 11, 2015 as a Public Holiday in observance of General and Regional Elections.” After he prorogued the National Assembly on November, 10 last year to avoid an Alliance For Change sponsored No Confidence Motion, President Donald Ramotar was placed in a position where he had to set a date for elections. After months of “consultations,” he, in
January, announced May 11 to be the date of one of Guyana’s most historic elections. As elections swiftly approach, the competition seems to be between the People’s Progressive Party/Civic and the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition even though there are at least five other political parties. Various sections of society have called on all Guyanese to play their individual and collective roles in ensuring that this year’s elections are peaceful. These calls were echoed by APNU+AFC, PPP/C as well as GECOM. GECOM yesterday issued a statement to the effect that it is fully committed to free and fair elections.
the Government of Guyana. “The Observer Group will be led by Hon Kate Wilkinson, former Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in New Zealand.” Sharma said: “The Commonwealth is committed to preserving its long tradition of support for elections in Guyana. Since 1992 we have been observing its national polls and we are pleased to be given the opportunity to contribute
to the further consolidation of its democracy.” The elections, the official said, are crucially important for the people of Guyana, as they choose their representatives. “It is therefore imperative that the electoral process is transparent, fair, credible, and free of violence.” The Commonwealth Observer Group will consider the pre-electoral environment and preparations. On election-day and thereafter, members will observe the voting process, counting and tabulation procedures and the announcement of results. “The Group will assess all factors affecting the credibility of the electoral process as a whole. It will determine whether the elections have been conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which Guyana has committed itself, with reference to its own electionrelated legislation as well as relevant regional, Commonwealth and international commitments.” The Commonwealth Observer Group will act impartially and make an independent assessment of
the electoral process. “It will conduct itself according to the standards expressed in the International Declaration of Principles for Election Observation, to which the Commonwealth is a signatory,” the statement from Commonwealth said. “Upon completion of its assignment, the Group will submit its report to the Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral, who will in turn send it to the Government of Guyana, the Guyana Elections Commission and the principal political parties, before making it available to all Commonwealth Governments. It will then be made public.” The group will be in Guyana from 3 to 19 May 2015. A four-member staff team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, led by Albert Mariner, Head, Caribbean/ Pacific Section, Political Division, will provide technical support to the international observers.

Guyanese author Imam Baksh Stop destroying election posters - say political parties wins C’bean Literature first prize The situation appears to be getting out of hand. Both the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) and the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change coalition (APNU+AFC) are protesting the increasing destruction of each other’s campaign material. Over the past few days, over-enthusiastic supporters of both parties have been defacing billboards and desecrating each other’s campaign material, including flags and banners and photographs, in several parts of the country. With the campaign hitting its peak, the parties have appealed for calm. The People’s Progressive Party Civic, in a statement yesterday, condemned what it described as the wanton and barefaced attempts by
elements associated with the APNU-AFC to break up its political meetings. Several of the PPP/C billboards, posters and other campaign materials were pulled down, defaced or otherwise destroyed within the past few days. The PPP is convinced that these are not random actions perpetrated by Party fanatics but represented a premeditated, well calculated and centrally directed plot by the APNU to create political tension and ultimately derail the May 11 polls,” the party stated. But the PPP supporters have launched attacks on opposition billboards. It was observed that large APNU+AFC billboards were vandalized at Foulis, Coldingen and La Bonne Intention, on the East Coast of Demerara. While some of these billboards were completely defaced, there is evidence of a clear attempt to burn the one at Coldingen. And the PPP is calling on GECOM to put in place all the necessary mechanisms to guard against multiple voting, unauthorised use of proxy voting, others voting for others, storming of polling stations, stuffing of ballot boxes and other fraudulent practices on voting day. The PPP urges its members, supporters and
friends to remain calm and composed despite acts of provocation unleashed against them. And the APNU+AFC members are telling their supporters the same thing. At last Saturday’s New Amsterdam rally, Prime Ministerial candidate Moses Nagamootoo called on supporters to refrain from engaging in any untoward act to disturb the peace of the nation or even provoke anyone. On Monday night at a public meeting at Fyrish, Corentyne, APNU+AFC Coalition National Candidate Nigel Hughes, condemned all acts of provocation during the elections campaign. Hughes assured that no act of harassment, intimidation or indecency will be tolerated as the APNU+AFC Coalition holds itself to a higher standard. “… we condemn all acts of indecency and disrespect,” Hughes said. “ We must hold ourselves to higher standards than we expect of others. We are better than that,” Hughes added. Last Friday the Coalition had publicly condemned the vile and utterly reprehensible tactic of persons who he said were being paid to pose as a group of supporters to intimidate another group.

More than a week after receiving statement, recording…
Cops still probing Minister Ramsaran’s “slap and strip threats” A week after giving police a statement and a recording of the confrontation between herself and former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, activist Sherlina Nageer still doesn’t know what action investigators will take against Ramsaran for the verbal abuse that led to him being relieved of his duties. Nageer gave Crime Chief Leslie James a statement last week Monday and handed over the recording of Dr. Ramsaran’s “slap and strip” threats the following day. The activist said that she also gave Mr. James the names of three eyewitnesses to the incident. But “we are investigating the matter” was all James would say yesterday when asked whether police have questioned Ramsaran. It was on April 20 that Dr. Ramsaran was recorded outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court telling Nageer to “F off”, and referring to her as a “little piece of s**t.” He was also recorded saying that he would have her “slapped for the fun of it,” and saying he could “have some of my

women strip her.” This occurred after Nageer queried the Health Minister’s presence outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court with other PPP supporters in support of former President Bharrat Jagdeo. Even after issuing an apology, Dr. Ramsaran was later recorded labeling Nageer a “miscreant,” and saying that she was in need of “psychiatric help.” He was roundly condemned for his statements and President Donald Ramotar eventually
relieved Dr. Ramsaran of his Ministerial duties. He has been replaced by Dr. Jennifer Westford, the country’s current Minister of Public Service. But Nageer has made it clear that she was not appeased by the action taken against Ramsaran. The human rights activist has been conducting picketing exercises outside various public offices including the Ministry of Health, and the chambers of the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall. Nageer maintained that there are too many other ministers and public officers who indulge in the abuse of power and menacing behaviour that are yet to be sanctioned by the administration. She pointed specifically to Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall, who had issued threats to Kaieteur News, while soliciting a female journalist for his uncle.

Cricket legend, Alvin Kallicharran, endorses coalition Former West Indies cricket captain, Alvin Kallicharran, says he is batting for the Opposition coalition after becoming convinced that sports has been neglected in Guyana. It would be among one of the biggest names that the A Partnership For National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU-AFC) coalition has managed to draw for the May 11 polls, and is being described as one of the toughest for the incumbent, People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) in their 22 years reign. Among some of the notable names who have endorsed the coalition are prominent businessman, Jacob Rambarran and Joey Jagan, son of Dr. Cheddi Jagan, former leader and founder of the PPP/C. Kallicharran, 66, who hails from Port Mourant, East Berbice, is related to Derek Kallicharran, a former left handed batsman and a right arm spinner for Guyana, and is the uncle of brothers, Mahendra and Vishal Nagamootoo, who both represented Guyana. Mahendra played on the West Indies team also. In a full page advertisement in Kaieteur News yesterday, Kallicharran said that after a very long time, he was able to spend quality time in Guyana and travel across the country coaching

Doobay murder trial for summing up today
Shakir Mohamed The murder trial of Shakir Mohamed is expected to conclude today. Mohamed is accused of murdering the wife of prominent Medical Practitioner, Dr. Ramsundar Doobay. Mohamed, 32, of Lot 127 Latchmi Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, (ECD) is alleged to be one of the key players in the murder of Shewraney Doobay. His trial is ongoing before Justice Brassington Reynolds and a mixed 12member jury at the High Court in Georgetown. State Counsels Mercedes Thompson and Orinthia Schmidt are presenting the case while Attorneys –at- law
Jainarine Singh and Moti Singh are representing the accused. Following the submission of closing arguments from attorneys from both sides, last Monday, Justice Reynolds indicated that he will sum up the trial and send it to the jury for deliberations on the next occasion. The matter is expected to continue today. Mrs. Doobay’s battered body was discovered lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen of her Echilibar Villas, Campbellville residence on May 24, 2011. The murder reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a piece of property. Subsequent to police investigations, Mohamed and Mark Singh, (the dead woman’s nephew), were arraigned for the murder. Singh, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, is said to be the mastermind of the act. He is now deceased. He reportedly fell ill while being an inmate of the Camp Street Prisons and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC). He is said to have subsequently succumbed to acute asthma.
election when for the past two decades they had the opportunity to deliver on these promises and failed. It is time for a change.” Yesterday, leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan said that Kallicharran, who captained the West Indies team between 1977-78, was especially disillusioned by the state of cricket in Guyana and the interference from Government in the Guyana Cricket Board. “He is extremely concerned about the state of the cricket grounds, of ensuring that these are up-tostandard, are fenced and protected from cows etc.” Kallicharran, who has retired from professional cricket two decades ago, has been giving talks to young cricketers. “He is advocating for more help for cricketers. For the State to provide subsidies so that players can be trained to handle cricketing life mentally and even help in special meals,” Ramjattan said. Kallicharran was also reportedly concerned that many young cricketers worry about the absence of support from Government programmes and in the face of that, worry about money to support families. “He is saying that Government is promising all the time. You have a new stadium at Providence while the Guyana Cricket Board is being allowed to fall apart. The loss of support from businesses amidst the economic climate is also worrying to M r. A left-handed batsman and right-arm off spinner, Kallicharran was known for his elegant, watchful batting style and was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year for 1973. He was part of the 1975 and 1979 teams that won the Cricket World Cup. His highest score is 187 against India in the 1978–79 tour. He also found success with Warwickshire in English County cricket. While playing against minor county
Oxfordshire in the 1984 one day Natwest Trophy he scored 206 and took 6 for 32. One of his most noted international innings, a knock of 158 against England, was shrouded in controversy when he was run out by Tony Greig on the final ball of the first day. He attempted to join World Series Cricket, but failed, and was appointed captain of the West Indies in 1977–1978 when Clive Lloyd resigned over the Packer
issue. Kallicharan was later involved in controversy when he led an unofficial rebel tour to South Africa in defiance of the Gleneagles Agreement and antiapartheid protesters in that country who asserted that official sporting structures were discriminatory. He saw out the rest of his career playing for Orange Free State and Transvaal in South African domestic cricket.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: APNU+AFC women call PPP ‘bare-faced’ killer of dreams Amid scores of cheering supporters, the women’s contingent of the recently formed coalition, A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), on Monday took the current administration to task over what they termed the continued disrespect of Guyanese women. As Berbice women gathered in front of the Manchester Nursery School, Manchester Public Road, Corentyne, for the party’s women’s rally, representatives of the coalition roasted the ruling party, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic for the continued sheltering of their male representatives, more particularly the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall and the embattled, former Minister of Health Bheri Ramsaran despite evidence of wrongdoings against women folk. The disrespect, they said, must stop. Scores of men were also in the large audience as the women of the coalition covered several issues of concern to Guyanese women and offered solutions that would be put in place should APNU+AFC government be elected to govern. Feature speaker of the rally, Sita Nagamootoo, former lecturer at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPEC) and the wife of Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo, reached out to the women folk of Berbice and reminded them of the reality facing women across the country. She implored upon them that “better must come” and called on them to come onboard the “unity train.” “My sisters, I urge you to vote for the APNU+AFC…We know what to expect if (President Donald) Ramotar is reelected, “more slapping and stripping of our women.” It is a shame that Ramotar is sorry for Bheri, his Minister: the abuser, and not the woman victim, Sherlina Nageer,” Nagamootoo said as she added that an APNU+AFCled government will not stand for violence against women. She reiterated the coalition’s promises for at least a 10% raise in pay for the public servants as well as the old age pension within 100 days of assuming office. Nagamootoo told the women folk that should the coalition be handed the reins of power, workers earning below $75,000 will not pay income tax. She said the coalition-led

A section of the crowd wends its way to the women’s rally. government will provide free meals for primary school children. She reminded too of the coalition’s promise to slash the Berbice bridge toll in half. She said the coalition leaders will wage a war against criminals. “It is time to stop running around for passports, birth certificates and other useful documents,” she said. The Prime Ministerial hopeful’s wife promised that an office will be in Region Six to serve Berbicians. The APNU+AFC women took what they deemed unfounded claims of the PPP/ C to task. Ndibi Schwiers noted that the Berbice people have been exposed to television advertisements which painted a coalition-led government as one which will return Guyana to the “dark days.” She ripped to pieces claims by the PPP/C, through televised ads and on the radio, of the return of a ban on food items, abuse of power by members of the disciplinary forces as well as the transformation of Guyana into a militarized state. She made clear that such claims are unfounded. Schwiers described May 11 as the end of the common struggle, “Change is coming!” “No more will they insult your intelligence by saying to you that Guyana is progressing, when in truth about 25 percent of people, and mostly young people, don’t have jobs. No more will they call ‘development’ building a set of buildings that are what you call white elephants. No more will a sitting Minister be justified in insulting our women. No more will they pamper corruption like a new born baby! No more will so-called development exist without a human face” the woman
charged. Schwiers emphasized the need to move forward and for Berbicians to not be misled by the “talks of the past” surfacing from the PPP/C’s camp. Schwiers took the public health care system to task as well, saying that in the 21st century while the rest of the world is making advancements in all sectors, Guyana is still facing a situation where more than one woman is sharing a single hospital bed. “This government is experimenting with your lives,” Schwiers told the sizeable gathering. The APNU+AFC candidate lashed out too at the Education system. She said the time has come for strategies to be in place to fully address the developmental needs of the
children so that one day they can be fully equipped to manage the country. “An APNU+AFC government will not only make formal education a priority but physical education as well,” she said noting, that strategies must be implemented for the all rounded development of the young people. She said that Guyana has countless talented youths who “can become the next Usain Bolt or Shelly Ann Fraser but because the right environment was never created to hone the skills of these young people, their talents end right in their communities where it started as does their dreams.” Quoting the words of American poet and social activist, Langston Hughes who posited that “If dreams
die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly,” Schwiers said she was saddened by the unrealized dreams and untapped potential and sought to question what could have been, “if only we had a caring government.” The woman told the crowd that the time has come for change. “The PPP is a barefaced killer of the dreams of the people in this country,” she said. She said that the APNU+AFC government intends to transform the education and health sectors to “an attractive and well-paid system.” The APNU+AFC candidate promised that women are treated with decency and given the respect they deserve. “No more will we have two, three women sleeping in a hospital
bed,” she said. She said too, that they will strengthen health surveillance units and laboratory services and invest in technologies that will help to diagnose potential diseases and illnesses. “No more will you be considered an experiment,” the candidate emphasised. Also revealed was that education will be priority for an APNU+AFC-led government. “We will ensure that in Berbice the children have access to the same quality of education as children in Georgetown,” she said. The APNU+AFC promised that the public schools across the country will be on par with the private schools. “We will also ensure that our schools’ curriculum match the development needs of the country.” She said that at present there exists a disconnect and despite earnest efforts by the youths, when they leave school, landing a job is often times an uphill task. She said at times there are no jobs for their skill set so “our curriculum has to be so designed to ensure that it matches where the country is going and an APNU+AFC government will ensure that happens.” She made a call for supporters to convince others that a vote for the APNU+AFC is the right move for the people. The other speakers at the women’s rally included former Member of Parliament, Sarah Vanessa Kissoon and Former New Amsterdam Mayor, Barbara Pilgrim.
80 countries worldwide are governed by coalition governments - NGO notes With four days remaining until General and Regional elections are held in Guyana, a Non-Governmental Organization calling itself A New Guyana has openly thrown its support behind the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC). A New Guyana has done so through a whole page advertisement that was placed in Guyana’s leading newspaper, the Kaieteur News. The commercial reflected a call on all Guyanese not to let “the past chains shackle us from realizing our full potential as a nation.” A New Guyana pointed out that many first world countries are being effectively run by coalition governments and noted that many other countries are
Brazil, T&T, France, Germany, Norway, Sri Lanka and India included looking into this form of governance. The NGO listed 80 countries around the world that are being run by coalition governments. In Europe there are countries like France, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine that are being run by coalition governments. While in Latina America and the Caribbean, there are countries like Panama, Zimbabwe, Guyana’s neighbour, Brazil and the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Further, the advertisement reflected that there are Asian
countries like India, Iraq, Japan, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia and Sri Lanka that are also being run by coalition governments. Then there are countries like Australia and New Zealand which can be found on Oceania. Joey Jagan, the son of the late President Cheddi Jagan, who is often referred to as the father of the nation, was quoted in the advertisement saying that his father was a believer of coalition politics. He stated that the Civic component of the People’s Progressive Party is a living testament to such belief. Sections of society have expressed confidence in the
coalition based on the fact that if any of the parties forming the coalition acts in violation of the constitution, the will of the masses, or the law, the other parties are there to sanction them. The Alliance for Change (AFC) had told its supporters that it will not allow the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to do as it likes and APNU made a similar commitment regarding the AFC. On February 14, the two political bodies joined forces in a bid to take over the reins of government in Guyana. The union is steered by the Cummingsburg Accord. This document stipulates the rights and expectations of both the AFC and APNU. The document has been drafted in such a way that neither party has dominating powers.

PPP/C declines participation in Agricola men remanded for armed robbery, illegal gun, ammo UGSS pre-elections interactive fora Two men appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday charged with armed robbery and the possession of an illegal gun along with ammunition. Ziggy Thrim and Dexter Rae of Agricola, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to them at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. Particulars of the first charge alleged that on April 1, at Agricola, while being armed with a gun, they robbed Thakur Mohabir of one cell phone and a wallet containing $23,000. It was further alleged that on May 1, at Agricola, they had a .38 revolver in their possession without being the holders of a firearm licence. The duo was also charged for having two live rounds of ammunition and one spent shell in their possession.
As it relates to the first charge, Police Corporal, Sean Gonslaves told the court that on the day in question the victim was in the area around 11:05hrs, delivering items for a furniture store. He said that the two accused confronted the man, held a gun to his head and relieved him of the items. Mohabir then reported the matter and the defendants were arrested and charged. Subsequently, the two accused were taken on an identification parade and were positively identified by the victim. The illegal gun and ammunition were found in Trim’s apartment. According to reports, the police stormed down on the man’s apartment. As the police were about to approach the premises, Rae was spotted throwing something through a window. The item was then retrieved
by the police and turned out to be the firearm and ammunition. When given a chance to address the court, Rae said “No gun was found on me. I tek the rap for the gun but the gun belongs to a guy name Romel Rowley. Trim (the other defendant) aint know about nothing, he is a hard working man.” Rae claimed that at the time of the robbery, he was going to Mohabir’s yard to buy weed from him. “I see when he get stick up”, said Rae. However, Trim pleaded with the magistrate to grant him bail. He told the court that he has a seven month old daughter and a ten year-old son to support. Trim was released on $75,000 bail on each charge while Rae was remanded to prison. The matter will be called again next week.
Man jailed for drug trafficking Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday sentenced a man to three years in prison on a drug trafficking charge. Patrick Simon, 28, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on May 2, at Bourda Market, he had 1.75 grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, at around 09:00hrs, the police were on patrol in the Bourda Market area, when the defendant was stopped and searched. The police found a black plastic bag in the defendant’s waist. The bag was searched and several small whitish rock-like substances were found. Simon was told of the offence, taken to the station then arrested and charged. The unrepresented man was also ordered to pay a fine of $30,000.
Given that it was unsuccessful in its efforts to organize debates between the Presidential and Prime Ministerial candidates of the two major political parties contesting the May 11th General Elections, the University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) took an optional decision to organize a fora that would allow for interaction between representatives of the political parties contesting the elections and the student body. The activity is expected to take place from Wednesday May 6th to Friday May 8th, 2015 at the University of Guyana’s main campus. According to a statement issued by UGSS President Joshua Griffith, the exercise is being executed in the context of the critical role that young people, including University students, have to play in the exercise of electing a government to manage the country and the role which the UGSS has to play in providing students with the opportunity to directly engage representatives of those parties seeking to hold political office. Griffith noted that three political groupings, the APNU-AFC coalition, the
UGSS President, Joshua Griffith National Independent Party (NIP) and the United Force (TUF) have responded to the invitation. The People’s Progressive Party/CIVIC, Griffith said, has however, declined the invitation citing as the reason what it deems to have been the unprofessional behaviour of individuals during a preelections forum held in 2011. “The assurances given by the UGSS that it will strive to provide a convivial environment for its planned forum, appears to have made no difference to the PPP/C’s position. Those

Linden man granted bail after allegedly burglarizing shop Orlando Forde
Bail was set in the sum of $75,000 for a Linden man after he was accused of break and enter and larceny. Orlando Forde of 19 Industrial Area Mc Kenzie, Linden, is accused of breaking and entering the shop of Bibi Omenio and stealing a quantity of snacks and
beverages valued $15,000. He also reportedly stole $25,000 cash between March 2 and 3 at Mc Kenzie Linden. He pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. Police Corporal, Sean Gonsalves related that on
c i r c u m s t a n c e s notwithstanding, and within the context of what is now the limited time available, the UGSS remains prepared to fully accommodate the PPP/ C as a participant in these important discourses,” Griffith said. In order to fulfill what it regards as an obligation to the student body, the UGSS has decided to provide a forum for those political parties that have accepted its invitation. According to the schedule, on Wednesday, APNU+AFC coalition candidate Brigadier David Granger will engage students for one hour, between 18:00 hrs and 19:00 hrs. On Friday May 8th the Presidential Candidate for the National Independent Party (NIP) Saphier Husain will meet with students from 14:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs and at around 15:15 hours to 16:15 hours, on the same day, the Leader of The Independent Party (TIP) Mr. Mark Benschop will engage the student body. “Both the United Force (TUF) and United Republican Party (URP) have indicated to the UGSS that they will confirm participation shortly,” the statement further outlined.
March 2, at about 21:00hrs the woman secured her shop after selling and headed home. The following morning, upon entering her shop, the victim noticed that it was ransacked. Checks were made and the woman noticed that the items mentioned in the charge were missing. Omenio reported the matter to the police and an investigation was launched which led to the arrest of the defendant. Gonsalves objected to the accused being released on bail citing the nature, prevalence and penalty attached to the offence should he be convicted. However, his objections were overruled by the magistrate and bail was granted. The matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Courts for May 19.

Trinidad (Trinidad Guardian) -The local Interpol Bureau re-arrested a Guyanese born man wanted in the US for several charges including two counts of murder, according to a release

Murdered Jamaican ganja Jagdeo must say “what his cut was” on the CJIA contract - Harmon farmer’s body to be exhumed Investigators are making arrangements to exhume the body of Jamaican Allister Delion, who was believed murdered sometime last week in the remote Berbice River area near Kimbia. Police ranks who had travelled to the area on Tuesday after receiving information about Delion’s death, were forced to bury his remains without a post mortem being done because of the decomposed state of the body. Delion’s body was left exposed for days until the police arrived. The ranks were unable to conclusively determine what marks of violence were on the body and they are in the process of arranging for a pathologist to travel to the area to do a post mortem examination. This is especially since
they have detained three men who they believe could assist them in their investigations. Investigators are still trying to establish if it was a heated dispute for the control of marijuana sales in the Berbice River or a plain robbery that led to Delion’s murder. They are also still gathering information about Delion who reportedly hailed from Spanish Town, Jamaica. Yesterday, this newspaper was contacted by a woman who spoke with a heavy British accent, who was making enquiries about Delion. She was advised to make contact with the District Division Officer of the police E Division under which jurisdiction the Kimbia area falls. Kaieteur News was told that Delion was a member of
the Guyana National Service farming community for the past five years, carrying out agricultural activities, which include the cultivation of marijuana. It is alleged that he and his gang were having a dispute with another that is also engaged in similar activities in the same area. According to a source, reports reaching the police are that the other gang invaded Delion’s camp and robbed him of about $2M, shooting him in the process. The source said that another man from Delion’s camp is believed to have been wounded, but is reportedly seeking medical attention at an unknown location. “People hardly live there… most people planting ganja there,” the source added.
Dharm Shala celebrates 94 years of service
A resident of the Dharm Shala awaiting her visitor. Dharm Shala is celebrating its 94th anniversary of service. This charity was founded in 1921 by the late Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj, who was born on November 3, 1889 at Friendship, Wakenaam, Essequibo river. He was the younger of two brothers. Maraj was so moved by the dilemma of the insolvent in and around his area, that he gave up his trade as a jeweller and devoted his life to helping the needy. This ‘Home of Benevolence for all Races’ was officially declared open in 1929 by Rev C.F. Andrews, who was an admirer of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1939 the same Christian chapel in which the service was conducted, was built. In 1941, the Dharm Shala extended its service to Berbice, with a building of similar capacity to its Georgetown counterpart, a
Hindu temple and a chapel. After the Pandit developed health-related complications in October 1950 at the age of sixty, his successor, Harry Saran Ramsaroop, his son, also gave up his thriving job, to serve the less fortunate in our society. He ran the organisation for some 65 years in complete voluntary service until he passed away in 2014, six months after the 93rd anniversary. The Dharm Shala is now being run by Administrative directors, one of whom is the daughter of Harry Ramsaroop, Kella Ramsaroop. To date this organisation which basically takes care of the elderly in the department of health, religious needs, food and shelter, continues to grow, with the less fortunate now being housed in 13 different buildings across the country.
“With the little subsidy from the government and donations from NonGovernmental Organisations (NOG) we pay for the utilities,” said Kella Ramsaroop, Administrator of the Dharm Shala. She also added, “Three square meals are being served on a daily basis with a total of 1,680 meals per week… We carry the burdens here at the Dharm Shala. Everyone here receives free service and is allowed to keep their pensions and family care without repression.” Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj life’s work was accomplished via the medium of the Hindu Religious Society, which he also founded. This “Home of Benevolence for all Races’ has been serving the less fortunate in our society for precisely 94 years now, surviving solely on humanitarian donations.
General Secretary of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Joseph Harmon has lashed out at a paid political advertisement in yesterday’s edition of the Stabroek News. The People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) advertisement focused on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Expansion Project which is often criticized by the political opposition. It said that Harmon was one who enjoyed the perks of an all expense paid trip to Jamaica, facilitated by the project contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company. Harmon in a statement to the media acknowledged that it is true that he was invited on a trip to Jamaica by the company. He said however, that it only came after his criticisms of the contractor, China Harbour, on the poor execution of the contract for the expansion of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). The APNU General Secretary said that he was not invited for a luxurious vacation but rather to visit several public infrastructural projects the contractor was undertaking in Jamaica. With the blessings of the Ministry of Public Works in Jamaica, Harmon said that he has visited and inspected the works done by China Harbour, on projects in the CARICOM country. The lawyer said that while the work done by China Harbour in the Caribbean territory was found to be of good quality, he maintains his position, that the handling of the CJIA Expansion Project by the current administration was not transparent and that value for money is seriously in doubt. “The former President Bharrat Jagdeo on the other

hand, who brought the company, China Harbour Inc. to Guyana must now say what financial consideration, if any, he and his advisor received out of the contract sum up front for the airport. What was Jagdeo’s cut? He is the architect of modern day corruption in Guyana,” Harmon categorically stated. The APNU Shadow Minister of Public Works asserted that it would appear that after his visit to Jamaica no further consideration was given by China Harbour Inc.
to Jagdeo. He reminded that after interventions by Jagdeo, this very company was the one to subsequently acquire the bid for the construction of a section of the four -lane highway on the East Coast of Demerara. Based on his actions, Harmon emphasized that the former President “should never again be given the opportunity by the Guyanese people to serve in any public office which represents their interest.”
Charity man charged with fraud A man was ordered to post $200,000 bail after he pleaded not guilty to a fraudulent conversion charge. Safraz Ali, 30, of Charity ,Essequibo denied the allegation which stated that on September 4, 2013 at Georgetown, being entrusted by a woman with the sum of $2.6M, to purchase a speed boat and an engine among other items, he fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit. Ali was represented by attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat. The lawyer asked for his client to be released on reasonable bail because he has a fixed placed of abode. The matter was prosecuted by Police Corporal, Sean Gonsalves. Bail was granted in the sum of $200,000 for the defendant. He was also ordered to report to the Officer in Charge of fraud at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, every Friday, commencing from May 8.
Govt.’s process of granting tax... (From page 3) spares, tools and vehicles. The government insists that it will retain possession and use of most of the bandwidth, as agreed to between Dax and the government. As the owner of parts of the cable, Mohamed can invite and sign with any company or entity to use them to transmit and receive data and information from any part of the world in the same way that today’s telephone companies operate. To add insult to injury, the government has agreed to pay Dax for specific emergency maintenance. What is even more alarming is that with all the concessions granted to Dax, there is no mention of a penalty clause, a termination clause
anything in relation to insurance. These are all basic features of any legal contract. Since the government is often claiming that there is no discrimination in the dispensation of tax concessions between local and foreign investors or businesses, Greenidge is now challenging the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) to say which entity or person without links to it, was privileged enough to benefit from a “sweetheart deal” like the ones given to the Marriott Hotel and Dax Engineering. “Government would be unable to do this because it is only concerned about increasing the ill-gotten wealth of its families and friends. This dy-
ing administration cannot deny that it is guilty of granting these concessions in an ad hoc fashion. It ignores the fair and equitable manner it is supposed to be distributed. And Ashni knows very well why he has deliberately failed to monitor all the concessions granted, for if a trail were really to be documented it would lead all the way to Jagdeo. The criteria government uses to grant tax breaks is very clear and known to all by now. You have to be either: a family member or relative, a close friend, known for lending support to the PPP/C and /or willing to stoop to any level to carry out their corrupt bidding,” Greenidge concluded.

Letters... Where your views make the news... Letters... Where your views make the news
I would never negate The presence of GECOM-accredited observer teams is most reassuring my Indian self DEAR EDITOR, It seems a great comfort and ease for Ms Nadia Sagar that she stands only with her citizenship to define her. It is not that most Indians in Guyana could not do the same if we tried but that we do not wish to. And why should we? We celebrate Amerindian Heritage Month. Africans celebrate their culture and heritage as proud Africans during Black History Month and on Emancipation Day. And as I write this on May 5th, it is for me and most Indians a proud day of commemoration, Indian Arrival Day. All of our ethnic pride and honour are guaranteed by the UN Human Rights Charter and by the Guyana Constitution. Africans and Amerindians have cultural and ethnic groups and leadership but, unlike Indian groups and leaders, they are never required to account for themselves vis-à-vis creating division and disunity. But this thing of being Indian rankles with Guyanese like Ms Sagar who are so proud to have answered the call of self denial that they wish us all to do the same. Indian self denial does appear to be the solution to all of Guyana’s ills. It is always Indians who are asked to make the sacrifice and those who have done so look down at us primal beings who, like every Amerindian and African, claim ethnic pride and honour. No one of the two sides in the elections campaign is giving the electorate a clear moral choice. In the absence of this, we will more than
likely continue with a racial voting pattern. Elections in Guyana have always been about race. Africans vote for the PNC no matter what and no one has a problem with that. Even the 1992 en bloc vote by Africans for the PNC after the dark days of the PNC dictatorship is now justified. And even within this context, the idea that Indians would vote for the PPP no matter what creates so much condemnation and censure. Martin Carter is quite correct to state that there is no separate salvation for us since we share a country. However, he never advocated, nor could anyone else, that a united Guyanese people should be achieved through self denial and self hatred on the part of Indians. The status quo of the Caribbean is African and Indians are a minority. Is there such racism within the Caribbean region and context that demands that Indians erase or negate all ethnic, cultural and historical ties in order to belong? Citizenships can change. I can be Guyanese, or American or Canadian, etc., if I cared to be. But how does one deny or change one’s essential being? I would never negate my Indian self. It is my DNA. It is my history, my legacy, my traditions, my culture. It is my spiritual home. If I ever denied any of it, that would be the real dishonour. And if anyone asked that of me they would be trampling on my guaranteed human, spiritual and constitutional rights. Ryhaan Shah
DEAR EDITOR, The announcement by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma that an Observer Team headed by Kate Wilkinson has arrived in the country to observe the May 11 national and regional elections is welcome news. Guyana is a member of the Commonwealth and the preservation and consolidation of democracy and democratic rule must be a matter of concern to that body. This is especially so given Guyana’s past history of rigged elections and concomitant dictatorial rule for a period that spawned some twenty-eight years, during which Guyana was
reduced to the shameful status of the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Guyana during those years was regarded as a pariah state known for rigged elections, poverty and backwardness which only came to an end following the restoration of democratic rule on October 5, 1992. Indeed, were it not for the presence of the Carter Centre led by former US President Jimmy Carter himself and other credible international observer groups such as the Commonwealth Group, the OAS and CARICOM, the elections might have once again been rigged in favour of the PNC. There are those who credited Desmond Hoyte for
the restoration of democratic rule, ignoring the fact that the biggest electoral fraud in this country took place in 1985 following the death of Forbes Burnham and the assumption of Desmond Hoyte as President. In elections held later that year, Hoyte took roughly three-quarters of the votes cast in full view of local and international observers. It took sustained pressure from the local and international community before Hoyte finally agreed to electoral reforms which included a new voters’ list, a balanced elections commission and more importantly the counting of votes at the place of poll which he declared to be a logistical nightmare. Elections
which were due in 1990 was postponed by two years to allow for opposition demands to be met. President Carter and his Carter Centre along with other western countries and the donor community were mainly responsible for the restoration of democracy to Guyana. Today, twenty-three years later they are once again in Guyana, this time not to bring an end to dictatorial rule, but to ensure that our hard won democracy is preserved and consolidated. The presence of GECOMaccredited observer teams is most reassuring and will certainly help to boost voter confidence and morale. Hydar Ally
Neither the PPP/C nor the PNC should make the call for reconciliation DEAR EDITOR, Currently, there is a very important discourse both in and out of the media domain about forgiveness and reconciliation. However, permit me to add a line or two to the conversation. Both the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/ C) have done wrong to Guyana and to the people of Guyana, hence, neither of these two political parties are without sin. So as the saying goes, ‘ye who is without sin, cast the first stone’. The issue here is not about the call for forgiveness and reconciliation, but more a question of who is making the call. The message is equally as important as the messenger. Therefore I believe that such a call would
be more appropriate if it comes from the religious community, civil society or the people of Guyana, in some structured and coordinated way. Here is where I have somewhat of an issue with the religious community in Guyana. I think that the environment is both right and ripe for the religious community to show strong leadership, or rather leadership to say the least, in this area. The cries of the Guyanese people are loud enough. For example, as you listen to the political campaigns, what you are hearing are a lot of hurt people talking to a lot of hurt people... The hurts and pains are being expressed in such audible ways; in many cases, it is no longer subtle. My question is; what would
it take to move the religious community in Guyana? That is the body corporate. There has been some leadership here and there, or rather some talk, but the fact that the cries are getting louder and louder, it means that what is being done is not enough. I am talking here about strong leadership! If these cries do not move the religious community, then what will? Albert Einstein said that ‘a new type of thinking is essential if mankind is to survive and move toward higher levels’. He further stated that ‘you cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war; and peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding’. Finally he said that, ‘intellectuals solve problems, geniuses prevent
them’. Ben Okri, the Nigerian poet and author noted that, ‘politics is the art of the possible, creativity is the art of the impossible.’ I am calling on our creative geniuses in Guyana, with a new type of thinking, to help us to understand and appreciate each other and our beloved country better, so that we can achieve the impossible -‘ One People, One Nation, One Destiny’. A colleague, Lawrence Lachmansingh and I have started to build on an idea for a Reconciliation process and have been circulating it for comments. We would be extremely happy to share and facilitate a discussion on growing this idea with a willing group of persons from civil society. Audreyanna Thomas
From page 4 of the future, because the greater number of political parties gives the voter a more honest choice and brings differences of opinion out into the open for debate. Coalitions also provide good governments because their decisions are made in the interests of a majority of the people and, because a wide consensus of opinion is involved, any policy will be debated thoroughly within the government before it is implemented. Single-party government is much more likely to impose badly thought-out policies upon the people, perhaps for narrowly ideological and partisan reasons, as in the case of the PPP. When difficult decisions have to be
taken, for example on a national issue, or over a major external policy, the consent of politicians representing a wide range of interests and opinion in the coalition is important in committing the country and its people to such difficult but necessary courses of action. Coalition governments provide more continuity in administration. In countries without a tradition of coalition governments, parties can remain in government or opposition for long periods, and an adversarial political culture develops, as in the case of Guyana where the PPP has been in power for almost 23 years. When a change does occur, the members of the new administration seldom have
any experience of government to draw upon, and they often embark upon a wholesale reversal of the previous regime’s policies. The PPP administration has done exactly that. However, neither of these things is in the public interest. Coalition governments provide a more consensual style of politics and allow for a more gradual and constructive shift of policy between administrations. They are the way of the future, especially for Guyana where the minority PPP regime has very seldom sought consensus from the people or the opposition. The APNU+AFC Coalition is just what this country needs at this critical juncture. Dr. Asquith Rose
Freddie replies to Mike... Coalition governments are... From page 5 you (Kaieteur News), some twenty per annum.” Well! Well! It is either the press releases are not effective since the victims do not solicit the intervention of the GHRA or a majority of the press releases are not carried or are carried but not digested by readers. I wonder if included in those twenty documents are the releases of the Guyana Rugby Union with which Mr. McCormack’s name is more associated with in the newspapers. But is this what the GHRA has become? A press release organization. Is this how Guyanese should assess the work of the GHRA? By the number of yearly statements it dispatches to the press? I would think that even a
school boy would know that you judge an organization by the substance of its work and the resulting accomplishments. Even though it is trivia, it still would have been nice to know that through the pressure of GHRA, Banks DIH is now putting the identification of the flavours of its ice-cream on the face of the cover of the container. Most unfortunate, Mr. McCormack didn’t make any mention of the very reason I criticized the GHRA in the column he took objection to. It is about the widow whose husband disappeared in a plane while in the employ of Air Services Ltd and she was never contacted by the management of Air Services Ltd, a billionaire company in
Guyana head by Ms. Annette Arjoon, wife of calypsonian Dave Martins. Finally, to correct Mr. Mc Cormack. I am the only UG lecturer to have his contract terminated without a document or a piece of paper going before the Council of the University for discussion and sent by someone or some section of the university. My contract was terminated through the oral suggestion of Ms. Gail Teixeira supported by four others Council members from the PPP/Government. The legal advice to the Ombudsman made that point pellucid. I close by imploring that the GHRA start helping the poor and powerless of this tragic land. Frederick Kissoon

Tony Blair becomes surprise Greece blows hot and cold character witness at ex-Israel in race to avert cash crunch PM’s corruption trial
Tony Blair (R) and Ehud Olmert Tony Blair has made a surprise intervention in the corruption case of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, writing a letter to the court in support of his plea not to be sent to prison. The glowing character reference for Olmert, who was convicted in March of receiving $600,000 (£400,000) in cash-stuffed envelopes between 1993 and 2002 from an American businessman, Morris Talansky, was one of several produced by Olmert’s defence team – another being supplied by the former Mossad head Meir Dagan. Olmert already faces six years in prison for his role in the Holyland real estate bribery scandal, although the sentence is on hold pending the completion of an appeal. Although the letter from Blair appears to have been written in a personal capac-
ity, the former UK prime minister remains in a high-profile and sensitive role as the Quartet’s Middle East envoy, although reports earlier this year suggested he was on the verge of standing down. In the Talansky case, Olmert faces demands from the prosecution that he should serve between eight and 18 months in jail for offences committed while he was mayor of Jerusalem. Blair’s letter was produced at the beginning of the sentencing hearing at Jerusalem district court in which he praised Olmert’s efforts, as prime minister, to advance the Middle East peace process. The letter, perhaps unusually, suggested the leaders’ relationship went “beyond that between heads of government” and was “based on friendship and trust with a clear understanding of the
needs and sensitivities of the other side”. Olmert also pleaded with the judges not to jail him, arguing that the shame of his conviction and loss of reputation was punishment enough. “What do I say to my grandchild who hears bad things about me from his friends?” he said. “The real punishment is the shame.” In his letter, Dagan said Olmert had made “many courageous decisions … which contributed, and continue to contribute, to the state’s security”. The case was reopened after Olmert’s former bureau chief, Shula Zaken, handed over incriminating tapes showing the former prime minister had not been truthful when he claimed in a previous trial that the money Talansky had given him had not been for personal use.
Preliminary investigation into Brazil ex-President Lula Brazilian prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over alleged influence peddling. The federal prosecutors’ office has confirmed reports that Lula is being questioned over claims that he helped leading construction firm Odebrecht win contracts abroad between 2011 and 2014. They now have 90 days to decide whether to launch a full inquiry. Lula and Odebrecht have denied any wrongdoing. Brazil’s Epoca magazine reported last week that Lula had allegedly persuaded foreign leaders to give inflated contracts to Odebrecht.
It also claimed that the former president had helped the company obtain low-interest loans from Brazilian state development bank BNDES. ‘Institutional relationship’ According to Epoca, Odebrecht paid Lula to travel to countries including Cuba, Ghana, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic to help secure the deals. Paulo Okamotto, head of the Lula Institute, said in a statement that the former leader rejected all the allegations. On Monday, the Sao Paulo-based institute admitted that a “preliminary procedure” was under way, but said it was not yet a formal investigation and that the inquiry may “simply be archived”.
Odebrecht has said that its relationship with the former president was “institutional” and that Lula had never acted in a lobbying role for the firm. News of the preliminary investigation comes at a difficult moment for Lula’s successor, President Dilma Rousseff. She has faced street protests, impeachment calls and plummeting opinion ratings after a corruption scandal at state-controlled oil company Petrobras. Ms Rousseff has not been implicated in the scandal but more than 40 politicians, including the heads of both houses of congress, are being investigated.
(Reuters) - Greece blew hot and cold with its euro zone partners yesterday as it struggled to avert a potentially catastrophic funding crunch this month, when it must make a big debt repayment to the IMF as cash reserves dry up. Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said after talks in Paris and Brussels that he expected euro zone finance ministers to acknowledge next Monday progress towards a cash-for-reform deal, opening the way to easing Athens’ liquidity crisis. “We are certainly going to have a fruitful discussion on May 11 that will confirm the great progress that has been achieved and will be yet another move, yet another step, in the direction of a final agreement,” he told reporters after meeting European Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici. Earlier, Moscovici had warned the euro zone would not even begin to discuss longer-term funding and ways to reduce Greece’s debt until Athens had agreed a “consistent, detailed, complete” economic reform programme with its creditors. His comments appeared to slam the door on Greek hopes of bypassing an interim deal and moving directly to a comprehensive debt relief agreement by the end of June. As a goodwill gesture, a senior privatisation official said Athens was ready to finalise a 1.2 billion euro deal with German operator Fraport to run regional airports and to reopen bidding for a majority stake in the port of Piraeus. Yesterday’s diplomatic flurry came after leftist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke by telephone on Monday night to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe’s preeminent leader and Greece’s chief creditor. Intensive talks also continued with the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank on an interim deal but there was no sign of a breakthrough on key differences over pensions, labour reform and the minimum wage. In a statement, a Greek government official said Athens had made “significant concessions” but that “serious disagreements between IMF and the EU” were blocking the negotiations and complained the two lenders had set contradictory “red lines”.
“Against this background, there cannot be a compromise,” the official said. The statement appeared intended to shift the blame for slow progress in talks onto the lenders and show Greeks their government was taking steps to reach a deal. Recent polls have shown Greeks overwhelmingly want Tsipras to agree a compromise to avoid financial chaos. LOOSENING STRANGLEHOLD Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis meanwhile met ECB President Mario Draghi in Frankfurt, a day before ECB policymakers hold their weekly review of emergency lending assistance (ELA) to Greek banks. The ECB said in a statement that they reviewed Greece’s economic situation and the state of negotiations in Brussels, but it gave no further details. Athens wants the ECB to increase the liquidity lifeline and permit the banks to buy more short-term treasury bills, easing the government’s immediate funding crunch. Greece has already commandeered cash reserves from municipalities and government bodies as it scrapes together funds to repay 970 million euros to the IMF by May 12. But euro zone central bank sources say hardliners led by Germany’s Bundesbank want the “haircut” on Greek securities offered as collateral for the funding to be increased following recent credit rating downgrades of Greece and its banks. One such source said he did not expect the council to make a dramatic change that would put Greek banks in immediate difficulty while negotiations are continuing. The political uncertainty was enough to prompt the European Commission to slash its forecast for 2015 Greek economic growth to 0.5 percent from 2.5 percent just
three months ago and cut its estimate for the primary budget surplus before debt service. A Financial Times report that the IMF’s European chief Poul Thomsen had threatened to cut a funding lifeline to Greece unless its European partners agree to a debt writeoff was denied by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble. “The IMF of course did not make such a comment,” Schaeuble said, though Thomsen did say things “had become more difficult”. An IMF spokesman denied in a statement that the global lender had pushed for large-scale debt relief at the meeting of euro zone finance ministers in Riga on April 24. However, Thomsen had “pointed to the tradeoff that needs to be made” between Greece’s slippage from fiscal targets agreed in 2012 and the additional financing and debt relief needed to make the country’s debt sustainable, he said. The report had sparked a sell-off in Greek bonds and stocks while worries about Greece helped drive European shares lower. While Germany and its allies have pointed to calm in bond markets to suggest that a Greek default or exit from the euro zone would not cause a wider financial meltdown, as it might have done in 2012, other EU countries are more concerned. Moscovici stressed on Tuesday the Commission’s goal was to keep Greece in the euro zone and avert what he called an “accident”, while Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni warned against belittling the risks of a possible “Grexit”. “Italy’s government considers it short-sighted and dangerous to underestimate the Greek crisis,” Gentiloni told reporters, adding that the idea of a Greek exit from the euro zone could not be taken lightly.

Arrival Day celebrated at Indian Monument Gardens The Indian Monument Gardens came alive yesterday as the Indian Commemoration Trust (ICT) hosted an event in commemoration of the 177th anniversary of the arrival of Indian Indentured Labourers to Guyana. The gardens became the scene of Indian culturally themed exhibitions, cuisines and art forms, as hundreds of citizens turned up at the Camp and Church streets location to pay tribute to one of the country’s defining cultural milestones. Present at the celebrations were US Charge d’ Affaires to Guyana, Bryan Hunt, Town Clerk Carol Sooba , Cofounder of the Alliance For Change, Khemraj Ramjattan and Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green. Noticeably absent were all of the country’s government officials. Addressing the audience in his capacity as ICT Chairman was Dr. Yesu Persaud, whose remarks centered on togetherness amongst Guyanese of all backgrounds. He related that the task of transforming the Indian Monument Garden, by the ICT, from wilderness to a “garden of togetherness” is testament to obstacles the country can overcome through cooperation. “It is because of ignorance and division that we have problems,” said Dr Persaud, “I would like to see that we can achieve togetherness working for a common good in my lifetime.” Delivering the feature address at the cultural affair was ICT honouree, Ashook

In addressing the gathering, Ramsarran not only honoured arrivals from India but also paid respect to those from Africa, China and Portugal. “We pay homage to those who came before; from Calcutta, Madras, Madeira, Macau, Gambia and the Congo. We have roots in Indian, Africa, China and the Americas, yet we have nurtured stronger roots here in Guyana, making it better with each generation,” said Ramsarran. “Together we have weathered the storms of slavery, indentureship and colonialism
to emerge with shared aspirations... with energy to mould a new nation,” said the honouree even as he acknowledged outstanding Guyanese in the Diaspora. “We have successfully bridged Berbice and Demerara yet some differences remain amongst us and it will take statesmanship and objective minds to bridge these. We are kindred spirits… like it or not history has dealt us a hand, divorce is not an option. Embrace and enhance the kinship among us,” urged Ramsarran. Activities continued well into the evening with cultural dances and songs as more persons poured into the park to be part of the festivities. (See photos on page 20)

Govt. lies about free fibre optic cable repairs
High end vehicles like the Lexus 570 and the Mercedes SUV see duties running up to $100M for each. Government’s claim that Dax Contracting Services would be repairing the Brazil fibre optic cable at no cost to taxpayers, is false and misleading. The government has granted Faisal ‘Dax’ Mohamed hundreds of millions of dollars in duty free concessions on luxury vehicles. In the agreement signed March 16, Dax is allowed to import two SUVs and three 4-door pickups every three years for the life of the 25-year agreement. This contract has a 15-year extension clause that is attached to the 25-year contract. Two high-end SUVs (Mercedes or Lexus 570, or BMW) and three 4-door pickups attract some $250M in duty and taxes. This represents a hefty payment to Dax Contracting Services, according to one contractor. Dax, if he desires, could sell them and rake in a very tidy profit. This is just one of the many concessions that Government allowed Dax Contracting Services in the agreement that it says comes at no cost to taxpayers. A fortnight ago, Dr Roger Luncheon, the chief Government spokesman, announced that he signed an agreement with Dax Contracting Services Limited of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, to repair the damaged Brazilian fibre optic cable. He said that the repairs would come at no cost to Government. The deal with Dax Con-
Faisal ‘Dax’ Mohamed tracting has raised anger as Government is on record for spending at least US$100M on what it calls the Information Communication Technology (ICT) project. This project includes the Brazil fibre optic cable that runs from Lethem to Georgetown, construction of a wireless and terrestrial network from Moleson Creek, Corentyne, to Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, and the distribution of 90,000 laptops to poor families. The contract with Dax Contracting is seen as a giveaway with serious questions being raised as to who Dax is fronting for. The ICT project has been under scrutiny for a number of years after evidence emerged that a plan, under the
direction of former President Bharrat Jagdeo, was hatched to take over the telecoms industry. He directed under draft telecoms legislations that three companies be granted Operators Licence once new liberalizations laws come into place. Those companies included Quark Communication, E-Networks and Global Technology. All three companies have directors that are close to Jagdeo, including his niece, Sabrina Singh, and buddy friend, Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop along with Winston Brassington, whose privatization of state assets has raised glaring questions. In December, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, admitted that the project, headed by Alexei Ramotar, was in trouble, and talks were underway with a local contractor and a consortium to resurrect it. The contract reveals that Dax will enjoy unlimited benefits, as well as uncontrolled usage of the cable and every aspect of the US$100 million ICT project. The agreement is for the repair, use and maintenance of the fibre optic cable from Brazil. Government spokesman, Dr Roger Luncheon, said that the Brazil cable has 12 pairs of fibre. Dax was granted a few for his exclusive use. Government also granted tax exemptions, incentives, tax holidays and remissions. Dax will use and maintain the said fibre optic cable, repeater stations and equipment for the 40-year duration of the contract. He will also have access to and approval for use of the Government of Guyanaowned fibre optic structure equipment including road access, and access to poles. ”The Government of Guyana will provide Dax Contracting Services with the necessary support, according to the law, in obtaining licences to transmit and receive data via the fibre optic cable. When contacted recently by this newspaper for a comment, the contractor, Faisal ‘Dax’ Mohamed said, “Hey, hey listen, you can go and f***k yourself.” He hung up the phone immediately after.

Juventus edge Real in semi-final first leg BBC - Juventus will travel to Real Madrid with a onegoal lead in their Champions League semi-final second leg after grinding out a deserved home victory. Juve went ahead when Alvaro Morata slotted in against his old club after Carlos Tevez’s effort was spilled. Real levelled when Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in James Rodriguez’s cross. But the holders looked out of sorts and slipped behind again as Dani Carvajal tripped Tevez after the break and the Argentine dispatched the spotkick. Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri signalled he was content with the scoreline as he brought on central defender Andrea Bazagli just after the hour and his side shut down the contest, limiting Real to a clutch of half chances. Whether Juve’s advantage is enough to survive the return leg at the Bernabeu is yet to be seen, but it was a result to
relish for the noisy home support as captain Gianluigi Buffon led the celebrations at the final whistle. Juventus have lost just once in 18 European matches at the redeveloped Juventus Stadium, but this victory, days after they clinched their fourth successive Serie A title, marks the headiest days since they left the Stadio delle Alpi. Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti - whose position is subject to the usual end-ofseason speculation in the Spanish capital - will know that his side will need to be better in both attack and defence to get through to the final. Real looked powerless to resist Juve’s early momentum and were picked apart even before falling behind. Arturo Vidal had found a large gap in the visitors’ defence in the opening minutes, but failed to get a shot off, before Tevez repeated the trick, but not the mistake. Having shaken off marker
Raphael Varane, the Argentina striker shot hard and low across Iker Casillas and the Real goalkeeper could only paw the ball into the path of Morata to finish from a couple of yards. Even if they were collectively out of sorts though, Real’s star-studded line-up always carries danger. That threat was realised as Colombia international Rodriguez ghosted free of Patrice Evra and lifted a precise cross onto the head of Ronaldo as the Juve back four appealed in vain for an offside flag. Rodriguez then headed against the bar from close range when he should have done better, but Juve’s cohesion and determination wrestled back the initiative after the break. Tevez coolly converted from 12 yards to put them back in front and his side could have been further clear had substitute Fernando Llorente showed more composure over two late chances.

Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC - Captain Denesh Ramdin believes the drawn series against world number three England has injected a new level of confidence and belief into West Indies. The Caribbean side bounced back from a heavy nine-wicket defeat in the second Test in Grenada last week to stun England by five wickets inside three days in the third and final Test here Sunday. Following the drawn first Test in Antigua, Sunday’s result left the series in a 1-1 stalemate. “We have more belief in ourselves now that we can bat out a last day, that we can chase down scores on a last day and beat teams that are ranked higher than us, and if we show that commitment and belief, we can go out there and execute our plans,” Ramdin told reporters. ”We will take it one game at a time, put in our work in the nets and off the field, analyse the opposition and try and execute our plans as best as we can. Australia are coming up and they are a very tough team, but we will try to play some good cricket and see what happens.” West Indies were written off before the start of the threeTest series, with in-coming England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves describing them as a “mediocre” side. However, the Windies put aside their poor results on the previous tour of South Africa where they lost the three-Test series, 2-0, to string together several strong performances against the English. Ramdin said after the South Africa tour, the squad had prepared well and was hungry to do well. ”We played some good cricket in South Africa but didn’t see the results there but we came back home to our conditions and worked on our game,” the gloveman pointed out. “We had a new head coach (Phil Simmons) and we worked really hard for the last four weeks. I’ve never seen a
team work and push themselves so hard and want success. ”All of the young guys who have been coming through have been pushing themselves to do well. It’s going to be hard in the next series but we’re up for it.” Victory in the third Test seemed farfetched when West Indies were bowled out cheaply on the second day for 189, in reply to England’s first innings of 257 — a deficit of 68. In a sensational turn of events, however, England were reduced to 39 for five by the close and dismissed for a paltry 123 in their second innings. Set 192 for victory, West Indies stumbled to 80 for four before coasting to victory on the backs of a 108-
run, fifth wicket stand between Darren Bravo (82) and Jermaine Blackwood (47 not out). ”We believed once our new ball bowlers picked up wickets [on the second evening] it was going to be an open game and we did that. Mr Ambrose came down on the boundary and said to us ‘we have it in us, just believe and we can go out there and do it’,” Ramdin related. ”Jerome Taylor since he’s come back into the team has done a tremendous job for us and he did it again yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. We were looking for three to four wickets so I think the fifth wicket was a bonus for us.”

Andrew Lewis’ demise must be Flying Ace Cycling Club receives positively transformed into his dreams donation from Church of Christ Says Michael Benjamin Approximately 14 years after his photo was splashed on the front pages of the nation’s leading newspapers after breaking the world title jinx, former World Boxing Association welterweight championship, Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis was once again the center of the news, albeit under the most distressing of circumstances, having lost his life in a vehicular accident at Friendship EBD, a few villages from his Hutsonville, New Hope home. Lewis rose to fame after stopping American, James Page, and winning the above mentioned accolade. He successfully defended against American, Larry Marks before his two epic encounters with Ricardo Mayorga; the first ending in a no contest while Lewis lost his title in the second. Ironically, I was awoken from deep slumber with the news since I am currently recuperating from multiple fractures to my arm, sustained after a fall from one of the bleachers at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground during the semi-finals of the Kashif and Shanghai football championships. Death is inevitable yet the loss of a loved one, especially one as full of life as ‘Sixhead,’ leaves indelible scars that appear impossible to heal. Irrespective of the contrasting views of his boxing decorum, no one dare question the authenticity of Lewis’ claim to fame—the first Guyanese to win a world title. Earlier, Dennis Andries, a Guyanese living in Great Britain, had won a similar accolade but its authenticity was denounced by dint of the fact that Andries practiced his trade under the Union Jack while Lewis proudly draped the Golden Arrowhead over his shoulders when he entered the ring. His feat of February 2001 brought the Guyanese nation together as each citizen, regardless of race or ethnicity, felt the euphoria of winning, for the first time in local history, a prestigious world accolade. One cannot forget the response from the corporate community in doling out gifts when Lewis returned to Guyana. Similarly, it is impossible to forget how Government officials literally tripped over for photo ops even attempting to outdo his many benefactors. Further, the Government, without seeking consensus, declared a national holiday and everything seemed fine, that is until the euphoria wore off. The Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, a structure erected on Trench Road LaPenitence in honour of Lewis’ feat, has been reduced to a mere training place for our boxers but is devoid of the requisite equipment to facilitate the true growth of local pugilists. Now referred to as the home of boxing, the
Andrew Lewis gym is devoid of the most basic facility to enhance development of the pugilists and is a far cry from what it was touted to have represented at its inauguration. Maybe, just maybe, Andrew’s demise will reinstitute the vigour and vitality among officials of the new government to truly demonstrate sincerity and a nationalistic verve to honour Lewis in the most tangible of ways by transforming the Gym to a truly national structure deserving of his accomplishment. It is true that one is regaled by the sincerest sentiments when he/she is incapable of appreciating them. It is also true that too many awards are bequeathed posthumously while sentiments are uttered in an unrestrained fashion oft times leaving a sanctimonious stench. ‘Sixhead’ is gone, presumably to a better place but has left a legacy for other aspiring pugilists to emulate. It is too late to seek his input in further development of the noble fistic sport but his death must be seen as the beginning of life for the many boxers that are hustling to practice their trade with an aim of attaining or even eclipsing his world title feat. His demise must be transformed into his dreams if his death is to be productive. I could almost hear Lewis’ voice in agreement; it resonates in my ear—”yo know what ah mean?” The loss is of national proportions and Kaieteur Sport wishes to extend sincere condolences to the parents, children, brothers, sisters and every other family member affected by Andrew’s demise. May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Russians crowned new champions of Linden; Unknowns,
Star Boyz disqualified Despite the disgraceful episode that threatened to put a damper on what eventually turned out to be an enthralling final between Amelia’s Ward Russians and Wisroc, Organisers of the Linden segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Competition could feel satisfied with the successful conclusion of this year’s event which ended late Monday night, at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac. In the final, Amelia’s Ward Russians held off a late charge b y o p p o n e n t Wi s r o c , beating them 2-1 to grab the first prize of $300,000 and the beautiful winning trophy, while the runner-up collected $150,000 and a trophy, but most importantly both teams secured a place in the national playoffs set for early June to identify who will be G u y a n a ’s r e p r e s e n t a t i v e a t the Caribbean Tournament slated to be staged in Jamaica later that month. The scheduled third place playoff between Retrieve
Unknowns and Star Boyz, the encounter had to be abandoned due to a scuffle that ensued among members of both teams which forced the Organisers to disqualify them both and award the prize monies to Main Street Panthers and Hard Knocks respectively. At the time of the stoppage, Retrieve Unknowns was enjoying a comfortable 3-0 lead. Main Street Panthers walked away with $100,000, while Hard Knocks went home with $50,000 and they too will have the opportunity to contest the national playoffs. Played before a capacity crowd that included Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste and Linden Branch Manager Shondell Easton, the two finalists quickly produced an exciting brand of football that left the fans with no other choice but to erase the unhelpful memory of what occurred in the preceding encounter as they were kept on edge with both teams displaying full attacking
mode. Shawn Daniels gave the Russians the lead after nine minutes when he fired in a fierce right-footer into the left side of the goal. After that both teams threatened in spurts, but stout defending put paid to those ambitions as they went to the half with no addition to the score sheet. In the second period, Wisroc urged on by their supporters increased the tempo and reaped the reward when Randy Wills netted the equaliser from close range in the 25th minute of play to make things very interesting. However, the Russians never relented and launched a series of raids on the opposition goal area, before eventually breaching it through the prolific Terrence Aaron, who swept in first time from a pass that was delivered by Quacy Johnson following a swift counterattack in the 29th minute. They held on for the remaining one minute of play to be crowned the new

Sonics edge Nets in OT humdinger Pepsi Sonics managed to eke out a tense overtime (OT) victory against Republic Bank Nets Sunday at the National Gymnasium as a battle for home court dominance reached climatic proportions with the continuation of the ‘King of the Hard Court’ Series. Sonics beat Nets 73-69 in overtime when Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) inaugural tournament for 2015 continued in the Division I Category. The National Gymnasium is home to both Pepsi Sonics and Republic Bank Nets. Shooting guard, Trevor Smith scored 23 points for Sonics with Kerwin Jackson adding 17 points and Junior Lovell 15 points. Nets took an early lead in the first period, outscoring Sonics 21-13; the usually bigger Nets then maintained a firm grip on the first half of the game with a 38-30 advantage, despite both teams in the humdinger putting up 17 points before the halftime break. Old habits returned like the plague for Nets in the third period, as they suffered an almost fateful meltdown; Sonics outscored them 19-8 to take a 49-46 lead before the last quarter; but thankfully Nets managed to forge some will in the last quarter that ended 61-61 that sent the colossal battle into overtime.
But it became obvious that the gas Nets expended get back into the contest, simply ran out since Sonics went on to outscore them over the next five minutes of overtime to take the win. It was a gigantic leap for Sonics, who were without star guard, Jason Squires, who was in Suriname on national duties. In the other Division I game, Melanie Patriots defeated Eagles 58-51. Sherlon Legall scored 18 points while Ashton Adams had 10 points. For Eagles, Louis James scored 21 points while Mark Wills supported with 14 points.
