Post-Cabinet briefings The President himself promised, indeed made a stirring commitment, to be about transparency on how the business of the people is carried out. By any standard, his government has been a study in the opposite: instead of transparency, secrecy has been the order of the day, and on just about everything that is important to the citizens of this society, who have used and misused as they are kicked from pillar to post, by one government after another.

A news item we carried on Sunday last informed the Guyanese people that there has “not been a single postcabinet press briefing held in eight months of the new Govt.” That fact tells a story all by itself, with some chapters delivering a warning, and mostly of the way things have been, and promise to be in the times ahead.

The days are different, but the story is always the same: hiding and deceiving; giving mostly what is about less than the whole truth, if any truth at all. This no longer new PPP government is a textbook instance of excellence in such contrivances. It has gotten so good at withholding and misleading that it cannot be bettered locally, perhaps anywhere.

Of necessity, Cabinet meetings and discussions are largely a carefully controlled affair; they must be as to the intricacies underpinning the pros and cons, the give and take, the hard decisions taken and those that could not be, because they were found untimely, or too costly, or lacking in governance propriety. Such nuts-and-bolts elements cannot be expected to be made public, which is why the overall deliberations of some Cabinet gatherings are stamped secret, and are so closely held. However, there must be some things that the Cabinet, standing in governance of this country, must have to share with citizens, to lay out clearly and accurately, and to present the substance of how the business of the people is being handled.

Currently with the oil, all the frenzy, it is largely unlikely that oil and gas matters will not feature prominently in just about every Cabinet meeting. There is so much - almost everything - in this country that hinges upon the glittering prospects of oil, the principled management of our oil endowments, and the ongoing points of developments in one oil project after another. For those areas alone, that sector alone and all of the associated components, should be part and parcel of what was analyzed, reviewed, and decided upon at one of the highest levels in this land.

That would be the Cabinet, and it is why we at this publication believe and insist that there ought to have been post-Cabinet press briefings, a continuing stream of them, in the past eight months to inform and educate Guyanese as to where things stand.

The leaders of the PPP government, meaning the President and the Vice President, cannot share what they want to share, when they feel like doing so, and how it pleases them to do so. That is, in a manner that is more of concealing and withholding than coming clean and delivering what is really happening. This is speaking of oil only, which is at the top of the pyramid of the nation’s gaze, and at the center of its concentrated interest. There are so many other areas that follow the same secret pathways chosen repeatedly by the leaders of the PPP government. The extent of our natural resources management, and in its entirety. The vastness of borrowings contemplated and already rushing forward for the receipt of many billions, it seems from everywhere.

The essence of the usages of those billions cannot be limited to a flashy line or two at the most.

There is so much more that can be dredged up and parked before Guyanese to peer at, but what we have laid on the table is more than enough. We do not ask for more riddles and evasions, should it be finally decided that postCabinet briefings would occur. There cannot be the characteristic speaking in tongues by leaders.

Post-Cabinet press briefings must clear the air on the issues that mean much to this small nation. Many Guyanese wonder whether they exist in the middle of a mirage, so mystifying are the actions of their government.

Clarity is what they need, to comfort them. More information is better, less is not good at all, and simply

The PPP government, led by its brainy VP, is so arrogant in its convictions that it makes jackasses of Guyanese, it barrels unheedingly down set roads: divide, mislead, dissemble, and devastate people and prospects. The outlook is that Guyana could be the biggest loser when the dust settles.

There is a great game at work, and it is not by the unforgivable Khyber. It is right here and right now, before our eyes, except that

we are too busy undermining each other, with PPP leaders being the worst offenders.

When they should be paying attention, they are grasping for what they can get.

There is Venezuela looking for a way out of destructive dilemmas. There is China and Russia and America and the old Persia (Iran) angling for a seat at the Venezuelan table. It is a table laden with some 304 billion barrels of oil. All those powers have a heavy interest in getting a big piece of that rich action. In comparison, Guyana is still attractive, but pretty bland, when placed next to the gorgeous figure(s)

Overcoming a high level of country risk DEAR EDITOR, Many Comrades have spoken on the path taken to where we are today. Many have also complained about the bad deal with Exxon and the wasteful approach being taken in the industry. It is important to remember that stealing from those who have stolen from you is not a justifiable act. Many foreign investors are still upset about the investments lost during the PNC post independence era of nationalization. Thus, many view new investments with a high degree of country risk, which requires extremely high returns to compensate for any potential loss.

If we reflect upon the nationalization that took place in our recent post independence history, it becomes pellucid that many foreign investors lost their investments and would consider what occurred to be the equivalent of theft.

Now it feels as though tables have turned and the foreign view of iniquity of the PNC of the past is now returning upon our country. Many local leaders also consider what occurred to be a selfish act in the signing of a very bad oil deal in return for personal and family gains. If so, this is but a continuation of the robbery of the national treasury. What is evident is the attempted seizure of power during the last election. If this would have been successful and based on the evident corruption that is

being uncovered, coupled with the personal sanctions put in place by foreign governments, those involved most probably would have further capitalized on the opportunity to take from what rightfully belongs to all Guyanese. This speaks volumes of the immoral and low stature of those individuals.

The PPP has to now balance the history of the PNC “robbing” foreign investors and creating national instability, which increases country risk, with the desire for a fair oil deal. This is best approached with clean hands.

More specifically, the annual performance review built into the oil contract allows for the discussion and improvement of contract terms. In addition, it is important to exercise the option where possible to slow down the expansion of drilling operations until obtaining a balanced agreement. Our citizens know the difficult history that we must overcome when dealing with foreign investors and being patient yet thorough and exhaustive in our negotiations continues to be necessary.

Many successful global and corporate leaders are of the opinion that an open mind is needed to be successful in an ever-changing global environment. This too we must embrace to be successful in uplifting our country beyond the obvious and somewhat (Continued on page 5)

opens the door to a world of speculation and terrible conclusions. When no information is forthcoming via postcabinet briefings, then constructive minds wend their way into undesired places. When there are no opportunities for questions to be presented and honest answers to be given, then silence and darkness speak for themselves.

This is not of democratic governance practices. It is of governance by the few for the fewest. If there is nothing to fear, then there is nothing to shrink from, nothing to hide.

Post-cabinet press briefings are about having the courage and character to face the people, through the Fourth Estate, and say to them: this is what we are doing, and this is where we are.

They are mouthwatering concessions for explorations; massive investments needed for infrastructure; broad partnering for enduring prosperities; and the electrifying economic and military powers made possible by being near (nearest) to those blinding seductions.

They are enough to make sane leaders lose their equilibrium. None wants to be left out.

I believe that sanity prompts both America and Venezuela to find ways to unlock horns. Sanctions have had their day. And with China, Russia, and Iran making their plays, America cannot afford losing out. For it to gift Venezuela to Easterly heavyweights, would be the equivalent of China abandoning Hong Kong and Taiwan; or Russia surrendering Siberia. The pressures are building on both Venezuela (Maduro) and America (Biden) to change course; the former has signalled he is about business, the latter treads gingerly. Time is not on America’s side, as its competitors want their piece

of the prized Venezuelan package, and Senor Maduro is well positioned to play them against one another.

Should my fellow Americans take objection; matters can get really warm around here.

America just cannot risk being on the outside in its own backyard.

Editor, this is the present Great Game played here. Our oil would not be abandoned; it just fades into relative insignificance, our current relevance secondary. Speak to a united political and racial front for a concerted national thrust, and I become Judas Iscariot.

They call it backdoor coalition overtures.

To calmer, more constructive, minds I submit this: a resurgence of Venezuela could mean indifference to Guyana. America has to be in that hunt. It has to adjust its hardline position(s). I think that it must rework its relationship with Venezuela, which I suspect is in motion, and has implications for Guyana.

Meanwhile, Guyanese leaders play their many self-defeating games; Guyana could be the biggest loser.

This ain’t it chief!

DEAR EDITOR, I reference Mr. Oscar Ramjeet’s letter in the March 25, 2021 edition of Kaieteur News titled “It’s High Time that a Guyanese be elected at the helm of Cricket West Indies.” Let me make it clear that I have nothing personal against Mr. Ramjeet nor Mr. Anand Sanasie, Cricket West Indies Presidential hopeful; however, there are quite a few reasons why Mr. Sanasie is not the Guyanese to be the head of CWI. The first is his association with a Guyana Cricket Board that was deemed by two Ministers of Sport from two different administrations as illegal.

This was subsequently confirmed by the Court of Appeal of Guyana. Mr. Sanasie continues to pretend that this is not so, and that everything is fine and dandy with the GCB. Second the removal of subvention for the Berbice Cricket Board. As is well known, the GCB has decided to withhold from the Berbice Cricket Board its rightful subvention as per the Constitution of the GCB and the best explanation is that they used up the funds to cover the legal costs that the GCB incurred as a result of the BCB court cases. Editor, shouldn’t the BCB decide what its rightful funds are to be utilized for? Why starve a

board of funds? Is it not spitefulness to do that, knowing, that the BCB could have collapsed, had it not been for the wonderful support the BCB under Mr. Foster has garnered?

I note with amusement that Mr. Ramjeet quoted Mr. Dave Cameron, the immediate Ex- President of the CWI saying that “Skerrit has failed to deliver the kind of leadership that we hoped to see” but this very person, as President, has been made to apologize to players due to social media outbursts. Is that the leadership we wish to see? A point to note is that Mr. Sanasie’s GCB refused to meet with Skeritt to discuss his proposal for West Indies cricket. Isn’t that evidence that Mr. Sanasie is not willing to work with those who are not deemed supportive of him?

Let me close by saying this. It is high time for Guyanese cricket administrators be elected to CWI presidency, but it must be because they have vision and because their hands are clean, and not because they are Guyanese. Being Guyanese also does not entitle someone the support of the Guyanese public. In addition, in case it is not clear, Mr. Sanasie, this ain’t it chief!

Eusi Kwayana: controversial and Former Finance Minister, Winston Society for Cultural Relations the poor and down trodden.

DEAR EDITOR, During the past year, thousands of persons have died mainly because of the pandemic. However, it is heartening to say that many, including several prominent nonagenarians, are “still batting” and doing well. Among them are Balram Singh Rai, former Home Affairs Minister, who is now 99 years old; Sir Shridath Ramphal, Ashton Chase and Eusi Kwayana.

In this article, I will focus on Kwayana, who will be 96 on Sunday April 4. The former Sydney King is unique and has been described as eccentric, odd, controversial, too outspoken. I was fortunate to meet with him on numerous occasions in Guyana.

Even in the High Court when Forbes Burnham brought a libel suit against him for certain defamatory utterances he made in his OPEN WORD newspaper.

I was junior counsel in the case and withdrew the suit against him before Justice Prem Persaud after the passing of the President in August 1985. Kwayana was not legally represented but filed a 28-page defence pleading justification. Kwayana struck me as a person who is not afraid of anyone, says, and does things he feels that are justified.

Frail looking, not properly clad, eats very little, nuts his favourite, and to many a genius.

He wrote the lyrics of the party song for three political parties, the PPP, PNC and WPA, a few books, including Scars of Bondage, the Indo Guyanese contribution to social changes, and Walter Rodney: his last days.

He was a schoolteacher, politician from village to cabinet level. He was a member of the PPP cabinet in 1953, when the British suspended the constitution because it was felt that the Jagan administration was engaged in communist activities.

The distinguished Guyanese was an executive member of both the PPP and PNC and one of the founders of the WPA. He was co founder of the African Society for Racial Equality (ASRE) and later the African

Kwayana was very close to Jagan, so much so, that in the 1947 general elections he played a very important role in securing votes from the black electorates in Buxton, which gave Cheddi a very narrow victory of 121 votes.

Eusi was with Cheddi since 1948 in the Political Affairs Committee, the forerunner of the PPP, which was inaugurated in January 1950.

Kwayana was not in favour of the PPP contesting all 24 seats in 1953 because of the lack of ethnic solidarity.

He felt that it would have been better to go with eight seats... but both Cheddi and Burnham ignored Eusi, went ahead with the 24 and won 16 seats, but the government only lasted 133 days.

It seems to me that Eusi was correct as regards “ethnic solidarity” because up to today there is racial strife.

Many accused Kwayana of being racist, but I do not think he is, he is concerned about

ing the 1947 elections, said that Kwayana (Sydney King) was of great help to him ... and was one of his protégés.

He is remembered for being bitter with the British, when he said in 1953, “this confounded nonsense must stop.” Recently, he was being criticized for not ridiculing the APNU+AFC coalition government for trying to steal the 2020 elections in the vote counting exercise. Eight years ago, I wrote an article criticizing the authorities for not bestowing a national honour on this great Guyanese. Ashton Chase, his cabinet colleague, who is still around was honoured with the OE, as well as Sir Shridath Ramphal.

Eusi left Guyana several moons ago and is now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States.

He writes letters periodically to Guyana’s newspapers.

Even the USA is exploring the use of wave energy.

We must reduce the impact of a bad oil and gas deal by showing our leadership in a climate change friendly approach to energy consump-

tion and exploitation.

The world needs this to

occur and we need to partner with companies such as Exxon to help elevate the discussion and approach taken to improving the current problems faced by the planet due to fossil fuel consumption.

This is the leadership required for today’s Guyana.

DEAR EDITOR, I refer to article, “Six years after oil discovery, Govt. now scrambling to boost GRA’s capacity,” which was published in Kaieteur News, Monday, March 29, 2021.

This headline is quite misleading, as it does an injustice to the accomplishments of the Coalition Government in strengthening the capacity of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to meet the challenges posed by not just the burgeoning oil and gas sector, but other critical areas of revenue administration and management.

The boldness of the KN’s headline emanated from an interview with Dr. Ashni Singh, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for finance. On reading the article, one gets the impression that the efforts to build and strengthen capacity in GRA are new, rather than on going. Indeed, I make bold to say that nothing outlined or disclosed by Dr. Singh is new; they were all initiated during the Coalition’s term in Office and, at the time of demitting Office, were in various stages of implementation. This can be substantiated by examining the comprehensive report prepared by GRA, entitled “Progress Report for June 2015 to June 2020.” As you notice, immediately, this report mirrors closely the period of the Coalition Government’s tenure in Office. It was prepared as part of the handover process that should characterize any change of government. I am urging GRA to make

this report available to the public.

The Report speaks to the major initiatives undertaken during 2015-2020, the accomplishments, challenges and failures. In the area of oil and gas, it identifies a major shift in focus of the GRA in 2018.

Specifically, the Customs Petroleum Unit (CPU) was conceptualized.

In this regard, a number of workshops, roundtable discussions, seminars and simulation exercises were organized. These activities were supported by various international organizations and agencies, including IMF, IDB, IMO, Chatham House, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Two missions from the IMF – September 5, 2019 and February 2020 – resulted in the presentation of technical reports. The first mission’s report, “Customs Administration of the Oil and Gas Sector,” focused on the establishment of an interim CPU while that of the second mission established a detailed roadmap for a permanent CPU. The Petroleum Revenue Audit Department (PetRAD) was operationalized in September 2019 with a mandate to administer taxes in the petroleum sector and execute cost recovery audits. A robust and detailed implementation

plan was developed by GRA to guide PetRAD. The Report identifies major capacity building initiatives that were undertaken in the department, including creation of a repository for oil and gas resources, drafting of new legislation for extractive industries (yet to be introduced into the National Assembly), creating the operational framework for the department, and participating in the initial Cost Recovery Audit of the Stabroek Block for period 1999-2017. The complement of personnel in PetRAD is 14, with 11 directly involved in audits. Their efforts so far have contributed $577 million in revenues to the Treasury.

Clearly, many miles still need to be travelled before the GRA is able to achieve the competencies to effectively manage the nascent, but fastgrowing, oil and gas sector.

The current government has inherited a platform on which to rapidly build capacity not only in GRA, but also in other agencies in the financial sector within the remit of the Minister, such as the Bank of Guyana, Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Finance.

The Office of the Auditor General should also be a beneficiary of such initiatives.

30 years of the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR) DEAR EDITOR, This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR) through the signature of the Asunción Treaty in the year 1991. MERCOSUR is an historic achievement for member states (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), since it has enabled us to move forward from a logic of rivalry to one of cooperation.

Our democratic governments proposed a model of mutual benefits by which commerce yielded profits for all the countries involved through expansion of markets, scale economies and specialization, making our productive systems more competitive and benefitting all parties involved. It was understood that the same could be achieved in political, social, cultural and educational matters.

This model of cooperation stands in front of an old one based on conflict.

While the member states of MERCOSUR are traditionally strong exporters of primary products, many of the said exports that take place among partners are industrialized products, with automo-

tive sector singled out as one of the most outstanding (almost 50 percent of the trade between Argentina and Brazil).

Since its inception, MERCOSUR has sought to conclude trade arrangements with all the countries in the region, which has enabled the construction of a Free Trade Area with most of the countries of South America. Similarly, we have negotiated trade agreements with the European Union, EFTA countries, Israel, Egypt, India and Southern African countries, among others. MERCOSUR is not a closed bloc to external trade, but rather it is a platform for member countries to project themselves to the rest the world.

We believe that integration makes sense when it is understood as agreements that respect the diversity of our countries. Although not all our expectations have been met, in encouraging regional solidarity in political, economic and social matters, our countries are jointly tackling challenges, which make us stronger.

For the last 30 years, MERCOSUR has been the main instrument in foreign

policy for all the countries involved.

Ultimately, this is about a state policy that has preserved itself beyond the changes in governments. In these past 30 years, we have achieved a common ground in many instances: a commitment with democracy as a fundamental condition for the life of our people; the respect for human rights as core value and inalienable right for coexistence; the recognition of our diversity; the coordination of our growth policies to integrate our production structures.

The world is experiencing a reconfiguration of the global power structure along with a crisis of the international institutions that have ruled in the last 70 years.

To address the challenges and uncertainties that arise in this scenario, we have no doubt that the integration of our countries will continue to be the best way to bolster our development, preserve our sovereignty and promote the well-being of our people. All power is weak unless it remains united.

The Spirits of Albion and Port Mourant Estates - Jock and Cheddi DEAR EDITOR, Was it Kahlil Gibran who observed that there is nothing called ‘the truth;’ there is only ‘a truth.’

How many would know that with his parents being major shareholders in Albion Estate, Corentyne, a young Jock Campbell ventured out there and spent nearly two years in that community, next door to Port Mourant Estate, Cheddi Jagan’s birthplace, before returning to England to enter University.

He admitted that it was that experience, which made him commit to improving the lot of the sugar worker, if he ever rose to the power to do so.

Fast forward to the time of the early 1960s, when on a visit to Guiana, Jock and Cheddi had one of their interactions, during which the latter suggested redistributing the industry’s acreages into 15-acre plots to the some 28,000-sugar workers over the existing 10 estates. Jock however temporized on the suggestion and countered by undertaking to set up a model of cooperative small cane farming.

Indeed, Bookers Sugar Estates had already initiated

such a model and was functioning at a specially created location, named Belle Vue on the West Bank of the Demerara River – a cane farming housing scheme, with each house-lot accommodating a kitchen garden. A playground with a community centre was a feature of the settlement of 57 pioneers drawn from the various estates.

The following excerpts from my book titled ‘Being Personal With Sugar’ tell the rest of the story of small cane farming development in the sugar industry: “The commitment to Dr. Jagan, who was then Premier of British Guiana, translated into BSE Ltd. and Demerara Company, together with then Barclays Bank (DC&O) (now Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry) and Royal Bank of Canada (now Republic Bank), establishing a Cane Farming Development Fund, in the sum of nearly $4m – impressive enough at that time.

The Fund was a special window through which ‘registered’ farmers could access loans for both capital works, i.e., the establishment of new acreages of cane, or the rehabilitation of existing acreages.

It was also to finance routine crop expenses.

I was BSE’s representative who met with vaulted managers of Barclays Bank (DC&O) and Royal Bank of Canada to organize the establishment of the Cane Farming Development Corporation. I was the virtual understudy to Keith Massiah, at the time Legal Draftsman (who later ascended to the position of Chancellor of the Judiciary), providing the information needed for him to craft the very comprehensive National Cane Farming Committee Act, and the creative Regulations thereto in the form of a Contract between Manufacturer and Cane Farmer, the provisions of which, when breached, constituted a breach of the law.

Being a ‘registered’ farmer became necessary, following the passing of Legislation, which specially identified the status of (small) cane farmers and described their relationship with the respective sugar estate administrations and particularly with the factories, which processed the cane supplied.

We need to socialize and network across ethnic communities DEAR EDITOR, Not everything in Guyana revolves around ethnic rivalry, but we cannot deny that it is a major factor in our lives. Guyana’s ethnic composition (39.8 percent Indian, 29.3 percent African, 30.4 percent Mixed and Indigenous) is distinctive.

Only a few democracies have such large similarly sized ethnic communities.

This should not be a burden if we Guyanese, at home and in the diaspora, welcome, respect and celebrate our diversity, and organize together our Indigenous (Amerindian), African, Indian, Mixed, Portuguese, Chinese and European communities to bring their strengths and resilience to develop our young nation.

To achieve that, we have to explore and learn about the humanity of all our ancestors.

How much does each of us know about the achievements of Indigenous (Amerindian) people, who arrived over 12,000 years ago; about the great African civilizations in West and Southern Africa, where our African ancestors come from; about the great civilizations in India and China, where our Indian and Chinese ancestors come from; and about Madeira, Portugal, where our Portuguese ancestors come from? What

do we know about the contributions of Mixed Guyanese?

As individuals, each of us wants a better life. At the same time, each of us also wants to ensure the wellbeing of our ethnic community. But we will only achieve these goals when we understand that a nation cannot be developed for all its peoples unless we reject “us and them” thinking and the view that “if I win, you lose or if you win, I lose.” All ethnic communities must be able to equally contribute and benefit.

The origin of ethnic rivalry in Guyana is the 400 years of European colonialism that established a corrupt and brutal system of economic exploitation and horrific human rights violations.

Extreme force, discriminatory laws and an ideology of racial and cultural differences were used to incorporate our ethnic communities and mixed offspring into the productive and service sectors.

European (White) planters and managers held economic and political power.

Indigenous (Amerindian) people were marginalized in the hinterland areas. Africans were enslaved. Portuguese, Chinese and Indians were bounded as indentured servants.

At that time, British

Guiana was a land of death.

Within a few years after arriving, a large percentage of the African, Portuguese, Chinese and Indian communities had died from the terrible working and health conditions.

The colonial land policies ensured that Indigenous (Amerindians) peoples, Africans, Portuguese, Chinese and Indians were denied access to the bestdrained and irrigated land.

After the end of slavery, the colonialists deliberately prevented the creation of an African agricultural middle class, and they deliberately confined most Indians to very small rice and cattle farms.

Ethnic communities were separated into specific occupations, specific residential areas and specific cultural and religious organizations. The rainforest and savannahs were mainly populated by Indigenous (Amerindian) people, who worked as subsistence farmers, hunters, gatherers, porters and boatmen in the forestry and mining sectors.

The towns of Georgetown, New Amsterdam and Linden were mainly populated by Africans who worked as dockworkers, domestics, street vendors, construction workers, bauxite workers and public service workers.

Africans also worked in the

rural areas as small farmers in their own villages and as factory workers in the sugar mills. Indians worked in the sugar fields and as small commercial farmers (rice and cattle) in their own villages in the rural areas. Most Portuguese and Chinese worked as shop owners and merchants in the towns, and as owners of gold, diamond and timber concessions.

Membership in trade unions, farming associations, churches, temples, masjids and local community groups were nearly all exclusively based on ethnicity. At one time, even the small middle class of lawyers, doctors, teachers and civil servants from the Mixed, African, Indian, Portuguese, and Chinese communities were separated into exclusive ethnic associations.

There was always resistance to the colonial system. African slaves revolted all the time. Indian indentured labourers also went on strike all the time.

However, the occupational, residential and cultural separation prevented socializing among all workers and farmers. Consequently, resistance against the colonial system was deflected into rivalry between ethnic communities.

This was the strategy of European dominance that

imposed a separate coexistence of ethnic communities. Two European colonial officials explained: “I think that the safety of the whites depends very much upon the want of union in the different races of labourers.”

“They (ethnic communities) do not intermix (socialize), of course, that is one of our great safeties in the Colony when there has been rioting.” [See Alan H. Adamson “Sugar without Slaves: The Political Economy of British Guiana, 1838 – 1904” (Yale University Press)].

Aware of these contradictions, there have been three major attempts to unite Guyanese. In 1924, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow united African and Indian urban and rural workers to demand better wages and working conditions. In 1953, Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham united African and Indian urban and rural workers to demand equal rights and independence. In 1979, Walter Rodney united African and Indian working people to fight for democratic change.

These mass movements had limited success because the focus was on economic demands and independence, which it was believed would eventually change the occupational, residential and cultural separation of the

ethnic communities.

Sufficient attention was not given to organizing networks and socializing activities to openly challenge the mistrust, fears and stereotypes between ethnic communities. Consequently, the limited understanding and misinformation about each other ’s ethnic community enabled the international and local conservative and opportunist forces to divide the movements.

Today, although Guyanese co-exist and interact together in minibuses; in many secondary schools and in the university; in some Christian churches and masjids; in some major companies; at major cricket matches; in food markets; in some major restaurants; in meetings of legal and medical associations and in parent/ teacher associations, most of us do not socialize across ethnic communities.

This was confirmed in a 2009 USA Vanderbilt University Latin American Public Opinion Project (LAPOP) Survey. Regardless of the type of association they were members of, Guyanese stated that at least 78 percent of the other participants were mostly or entirely from the same ethnic (Continued on page 30)

The PPP/C is responsible for the turmoil in local cricket C

ricket is supposed to be a gentlemen’s game. But cricket administration is far from being a gentleman’s game.

Cricket administration has become a struggle for power.

And many of those who have been fighting for power have nothing to give to the game; they are there mainly to feather their own nests.

There has been too much backstabbing and backbiting.

There are snakes all around.

At the root of this power struggle is the fact that perquisites are now involved in cricket administration, quite unlike in the past when cricket administrators would have had to go into their pockets in the interest of the game.

Principles are being sacrificed on the altar of powergrabbing. And this accounts for all the constant instability within regional cricket.

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the Barbados Cricket Board (BCB) are perfectly in order to refuse to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Cricket West Indies (CWI).

It is a convention, and probably now part of the rules of CWI, that financial statements must be provided at Annual General Meetings (AGMs). And these statements should be circulated prior to the meeting so that they can be debated.

What is the use of having an AGM if there are no financial statements to inform the directors about the financial health of CWI? The GCB and BCB did the right thing in demanding accountability.

But the representatives of the GCB on the CWI may have had their last hurrah. The PPP/C has now effectively completed what it was trying to do for more than 10 years.

The PPP/C has managed to take control of local cricket.

Its original objectives were financial and political.

Cricket is big money. And ever since the Caribbean Premier League was launched, the PPP/C has been trying to gain control of both the GCB and the CWI. The party’s backers have always had an eye on seizing control of local cricket so that it can get its hands on the bigger prize, control of West Indian cricket.

The PPP/C was also fearful of the AFC gaining a foothold in local cricket. It was this which led it to interfere politically in local cricket administration and to engineer the problems which has beset local cricket for the next 10 years.

Cricket is supposed to be played on the field not in the courtroom or in Ministries.

But local cricket found itself embroiled in legal and personality battles. This should never have happened. But it did because the GCB tried to resist the PPP/C-engineered takeover of cricket.

The PPP/C went as far as invading the premises of the local Cricket Board and seizing record. And it tried to involve internationally respected cricketers in its sinister plot to take over cricket. It even made a bid to take control of the famed Georgetown Cricket Club.

For the first time in the history of Guyana, a law – the Cricket Administration Act was passed so that the PPP/C could have its way. But it faced resistance and it took years for the PPP/C to have its way.

The PPP/C has been primarily responsible for the turmoil in local cricket. There were never any major prob-

lems in local cricket administration, until the PPP/C began its divide and rule tactics.

The PPP/C however is naïve. It ought to know that cricket and politics are like oil and water: they do not mix.

The PPP/C is also being accused of bias in respect to the CWI elections.

This matter is likely to be investigated by the Ethics Committee of the CWI regardless of whoever prevails in the executive elections.

Those who presently feel that they are secure in their positions will soon find out how cunning the PPP/C can be.

The PPP/C’s gerrymandering of cricket administration is far from complete. And the PPP/C is not going to stop at cricket.

It will also set its sights on the administration of other sports where big money is involved.

And the biggest bonanza of all is football.

The money that is in international football is far greater than in cricket. And the PPP/C will soon put its sights on taking over local football.

The smoke signals are already there that the PPP/C has already identified someone whom it will engineer to become the honcho of local football.

The PPP/C will only go where there is money or political returns. Many years ago, in order to counteract the influence of a man called Peter, who was helping out table tennis, the PPP/C tried to engineer one of its acolytes to nudge out the man called Peter. But when it realised that table tennis wields little political or financial returns, the plan was aborted.

The same will not happen

Clive Thomas, Roopnaraine and Andaiye: The missing link It cannot be missed by any reader in or out of Guyana, that Dr. Clive Thomas has not penned even a line on two subjects in his weekly column since the defeat of his party, APNU, in the March 2020 election – analysis of the APNU in power and the exodus of the WPA from the APNU. Dr. Thomas, before he entered government in 2015, was generally seen as an iconic Guyanese long known for his anti-dictatorial activism, leadership role in the era of Walter Rodney, and scholarship on Guyana’s political economy. During the tenure of the Jagdeo/Ramotar presidencies, his weekly column on economic/financial issues drifted consistently into pure political analysis.

He described the nature of the rule of Jagdeo and Ramotar as a criminalized state.

Many of the columns were condemnations of the PPP’s governance. Strangely, Dr. Thomas, has for the past two

years composed each and every column on the petroleum industry that prior to those two years, he never wrote about. Despite his formidable scholarship, petroleum economics was not Dr. Thomas’ field. After two years, his outpourings on oil have exhausted themselves.

More importantly, because of his colossal presence since the late 60s in the analysis of Guyana’s political sociology and political economy, the young nation of Guyana is expected to hear from him on the two subjects cited above. But one can add a third – his experience as the anti-corruption tsar in the APNU+AFC regime, where he headed the State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA).

It is sad that the young academic minds may never read Dr. Thomas’ insights into the subjects mentioned above. At age 82, one wonders if we are ever going to read about his time as chairman of GuySuCo, head of SARA, the pitfalls in the po-

litical economy of the APNU+AFC’s time in office.

But what about the missing link?At age 82, are the Guyanese people ever going to see a brilliant analysis from Dr. Thomas on the era of the 70s when he, Walter Rodney, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, Eusi Kwayana, Moses Bhagwan, Dr. Joshua Ramsammy, Andaiye, among others, literally confronted Forbes Burnham’s autocracy and became glowing icons in the Third World? It would appear that Dr. Thomas has become part of the missing link.

What is the missing link?

We can start with Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine. When his book, “The Sky’s Wild Noise,” was published, most Guyanese no doubt were eager to see how this erudite mind would explain the Burnham regime, why Burnham became so totalitarian and why the WPA sought to remove him. But The Sky’s Wild Noise was so subdued that it became a whistle.

There was nothing by Dr.

Roopnaraine on that tragic moment in Guyanese history that made him a Guyanese icon. For more on my chagrin, see my column of Wednesday May 1, 2013, captioned: “The Sky’s Wild Noise drowned me with pessimism.”

Then there is Andaiye.

She was equally prominent in the anti-Burnham struggle as anyone in the WPA’s leadership, except for Walter Rodney. After Andaiye’s death in 2019, Dr. Alissa Trotz (the great evader – not a word in her weekly Stabroek News column on the 2018 no-confidence motion and the 2020 election), edited a compilation of Andaiye’s writing (titled The Point is to Change the World).

There is no essay in that book on Andaiye’s analysis of the Burnham regime and why it was a post-colonial dictatorship that had to be removed. In fact, if you go through the list of all her articles, none is on that momentous period in Guyana’s modern history – 1970 to the time

of Rodney’s assassination in 1980.

Obviously, the question is why Andaiye and Dr. Roopnaraine would not leave anything on that period. I have been talking to people about this enigma, but the cluster of folks who belonged in that era is in advanced age or dead. In another column, I will explain my thoughts on why these two WPA leaders chose not to analyse Burnham.

So will Dr. Thomas fill that void? That is left to be seen.

Dr. Nigel Westmaas, the quintessential WPA ideologue, is doing for Moses Bhagwan what Dr. Trotz did for Andaiye. But I am not aware that Bhagwan had done any analytical pieces on the nature of Burnham’s rule as a reflection.

So as time moves on, as the surviving leadership of the WPA of the 1970s gets older, that void will remain. As it is, there are only two books that look at the 70s. One is Father Andrew Morrison’s

Frederick Kissoon “Justice: The Struggle for Democracy in Guyana, 19521992.” This is a good read, but it is not an academic work. The seminal book on Burnham, remains Tyron Ferguson’s “To Survive Sensibly or Court Heroic Death: Management of Guyana’s Political Economy, 19651985.”

PM: Reach out to the vulnerable NEWSDAY - The Prime Minister is urging citizens to “reach out in whatever way they can, to the vulnerable among us,” in the context of economic uncertainty and socio-psychological problems facing the public.

Dr Rowley made the call in his Spiritual Shouter Baptist Liberation Day message issued on Monday. The religion, he said, can claim that it “continues to carve out a space in Trinidad and Tobago’s society and is making significant strides abroad.”

“We should all acknowledge a community, once ridiculed, and persecuted and one that persisted because of the enduring faith of its membership,” a community, he said, that now stands as a

“recognised national stakeholder, and whose practices are part of the uplifting cultural expressions of our nation.”

Rowley said in these unprecedented times, “(the) pandemic, lingering economic uncertainty and socio-psychological issues are gripping the world but the vibrancy and the deeply abiding faith of the Spiritual/Shouter Baptists give us hope that we can rely on local ingenuity as the foundation of a brighter future.

“In the midst of all of these troubling situations, the Government continues to steer the ‘Good ship, Trinidad and Tobago’ towards a safe port,” he said.

Man who attempted to murder pregnant wife released on bail Released on bail for attempting to murder his wife, Richard Mohamed.

A labourer, 33, accused of attempting to murder his pregnant wife on Thursday last, was yesterday released on $500,000 bail.

The defendant, Richard Mohammed, of Grant Friendship, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two, was charged with attempted murder at the Anna Regina Magistrates Court.

The charge was read to him by Magistrate, Esther Sam. It was alleged that on March 25th, 2021, at Grant Friendship, Lower Pomeroon River, Mohammed attempted to murder his reputed wife, Marisa Cameron, 23.

He was not required to plea to the charge and the matter was adjourned until April 19, 2021.

Kaieteur News had reported that Mohammed reportedly went berserk and chopped his pregnant wife,

Cameron, several times before burning down their home. In fact, according to neighbours’ accounts, it was the smoke from the burning house that might have saved her life. The smoke alerted them to rush over where they found a badly wounded Cameron. She had received severe chop wounds to her head, hands and other parts of her body. Police has stated that her fingers were also severed. She was rescued by those neighbours and taken to the hospital, while Mohammed was captured and handed over to the police.

Cameron was later air dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she underwent surgery. The Guyana Police Force has since stated that the surgery was successful and her condition is now regarded as stable.

He noted that the community’s first attempt at becoming a united faith was spearheaded by Archbishop Elton George Griffith, who established the West Indian Evangelical Spiritual Baptist Faith in 1940.

“It was also Archbishop Griffith who fought for more than three decades for the repeal of the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance,” Rowley wrote.

Fisherman charged for chopping man following row over money A 40-year-old fisherman, who was arrested for reportedly chopping a man several times about his body in the company of his brother following a row over money, was yesterday released on $300,000 bail after he was charged with attempted murder.

The defendant, Joel Marks, of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, made his first court appearance at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate, Sunil Scarce, to answer to the charge.

Marks was not required to plead to the charge, which alleged that on March 22, at Kumaka, North West District, he chopped 27-year-old, Christopher Bridgemohan, of Kumaka waterfront. Magistrate Scarce, then granted the man bail and the matter was adjourned to May, 18.

Bridgemohan who is presently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), was chopped several times about his body by two brothers, whose boat he damaged because he didn’t get the money he had wanted to borrow.

Two more persons die from COVID-19 The Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday reported that two persons who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have died. Their deaths now bring Guyana’s COVID-19 death toll to 231 deaths.

Dead is a 56-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman both from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). According to the Ministry’s press release both persons died on Monday while receiving treat-

ment at a medical facility.

Meanwhile, the MoH also recorded 10 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 10,192.

The dashboard shows that 12 patients are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, 58 persons are in the institutional isolation, 893 in home isolation and 18 persons are institutional quarantine. To date 8,998 recoveries have been recorded.

Labourer charged for stealing 23 cows A labourer, 30, was yesterday charged for stealing 23 cows valued at some $3.5M. The defendant Dexwayne Evans called “Packa” of Dartmouth Essequibo Coast was charged by Magistrate Esther Sam at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that Evans stole the cows on October 10,

2020 and January 12, 2021 at Cozier Backdam, Essequibo Coast. The cows, the court was told belonged to Bernice Sooklall Rodrigues. Evans pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $50,000 bail.The matter was adjourned until April 19, 2021 and was transferred to the Charity Magistrate’s Court.

11-year-old boy drowns at Enmore Seawall

An 11-year-old boy is now dead after a fishing trip at the Enmore Seawall, East Coast Demerara, ended terribly.

The dead child has been identified as, Latchman Ramanand, 11, of Sixth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara.

Kaieteur News understands that Latchman in the company of others left home on Monday for the Enmore Seawall, when tragedy struck.

While Latchman and others were in the water fishing, the tide reportedly pulled him out to sea.

An alarm was raised and Latchman’s body was later fished out of the water on Monday afternoon. He was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

This publication learnt that after fleeing the scene, the other suspect who was involved in the incident, has not been arrested as yet. An investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

From page 21 Excess Capacity The former energy minister expanding on the use of gas for electricity noted, that in T&T, there are four electricity-generating stations on the main island and another located in Tobago.

He disclosed however, “we have an installed capacity of about 2,100 (megawatts) MW in Trinidad and right now the peak demand in Trinidad is somewhere in the region of 1,350MW.” Ramnarine explained to the moderator—Chris Chapwanya—”yes, we do have excess capacity in Trinidad.”

He said the excess capacity or glut in supply is underpinned by some key developments in the country over the past decade and cited as example the cancellation of an aluminum smelter :”A power plant was built

to supply the aluminum smelter and that smelter was cancelled.”

Ramnarine underscored too, that “we have had the closure of one of the major steel producers in the country…we have had the closure of the refinery in Trinidad, the oil refinery so that accounts for that big gap between installed capacity and what we call peak demand.”As such, the former Energy Minister divulged that the T&T government is currently looking to now diversify its electricity production away from natural gas towards solar.

“To that extent there is a project that is being pursued jointly by BP and shell to build the country’s first solar farm,”

Ramnarine said.

He noted that there are two such farms planned that will produce some 110MW of power.

The former Minister did point out that using natural gas to generate electricity in Trinidad did allow the country to sell the utility at about the second lowest rate in the hemisphere which has had its own spin off effects.

Increased Tariffs The low prices charged according to Ramnarine, “…has really underpinned the lifestyle so to speak, or a lot of the prosperity in Trinidad.”

He cited as examples the benefits to the manufacturing and industrial sectors as a result of cheaper electricity.

tor, I steered many interested investors of this nature, to consider locations at the sparsely developed areas at the mouths of the Essequibo and Berbice rivers.”

For that reason, Dr. Adams advised Government to investigate these and other similar areas outside of the Georgetown area, for these developments, which are fast coming.

It should be noted that the shadow Oil and Gas Minister, David Patterson, also expressed concerns about using Wales as the site for the project. Patterson had deemed it “an act of lunacy” as it would entail placing a gas pipeline along the mouth of one of Guyana’s busiest rivers.

had asked Jagdeo and Guyana Times to prove to the court, with evidence that claims made about misappropriation, rise in wealth, and the Minister’s ownership of three house lots at Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD), are true.

She contended that the tenor and contents of the article suggest that as a Minister in Government, she acquired unexplained wealth by dishonest means.

She also contended that contents of the article were deliberately written and circulated by the newspaper to tarnish her reputation as a Minister of Government and cause right thinking person’s to think that she is a corrupt and dishonest person.

Ferguson noted that the newspaper also used an aerial picture in support of the article to create the impression to the public that the claims were true that she has more than one parcel of land, whilst that is not true.

ATV rider flees after dropping accident victim at hospital An ATV rider, Daniel Singh, fled from the West Demerara Hospital on Monday after he dropped off an accident victim there.

The victim, Reshma Baldeo, of Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara (WBD), according to what police were told was Singh’s pillion rider.

Singh was spotted “riding speed” on the western side of the West Bank Public Road at Pouderoyen when he lost control of his ATV. Eyewitnesses told police that it was around 21:30Hrs when the ATV toppled sev-

eral times before crashing into a pedestrian crossing sign. The ATV came to a halt on the western parapet and public-spirited citizens rushed to assist them.

The pillion rider, Baldeo lay on the roadway unconscious with notable injuries to her right side face.

Police were told that Singh along with the helpers picked her up and took her to the hospital where she was admitted. However, within minutes he later disappeared.

Police have tried to locate Singh but so far they have been unsuccessful.

in agriculture and wholesale/ retail trade, corporate and income tax concessions, jobs in the security services, and quality drainage and irrigation services.

Brazil regulator says Bharat Biotech vaccine does not meet factory standards SAO PAULO - (Reuters) - Brazilian health regulator Anvisa said Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin COVID-19 does not meet its manufacturing standards, according to a note in yesterday’ edition of the official gazette.

The Brazilian government signed a contract last month to buy 20 million doses of the Indian drugmaker’s vaccine.

EU set to sanction more Iranians for rights abuses, first since 2013, diplomats say BRUSSELS/PARIS (Reuters) - The European Union is set to agree to sanction several Iranian individuals today for human rights abuses, the first such measures since 2013, three EU diplomats said.

EU envoys are expected to agree to impose travel bans and asset freezes on the individuals, the diplomats said, and their names would be published next week, when the sanctions take effect. They gave no further details.

The European Union declined to comment.

Like the United States, the European Union has an array of sanctions over human rights since 2011 on more than 80 Iranian individuals which has been renewed annually every April.

Those will also be renewed today, the three diplomats said.Asked why the latest measures were being taken now, one of the diplomats said the EU was seeking to take a tougher stance to uphold human rights. This

month, the EU sanctioned 11 people from countries including China, North Korea, Libya and Russia.

“Those responsible for serious rights violations must know there are consequences,” an EU diplomat said.The United Nations has regularly complained that Iran arrests political opponents in a clampdown on freedom of expression. On March 9, U.N. special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman, presented a report documenting Iran’s high death penalty rate, executions of juveniles, the use torture to coerce confessions and the lawful marriage of girls as young as 10 years old.

Iran has repeatedly rejected accusations by the West of human rights abuses.

Iranian officials were not immediately available for comment.Despite the human rights situation, no Iranians have been added to that list since 2013, however, as the bloc has shied away from angering Iran in the hope of safeguarding a nuclear accord

Tehran signed with world powers in 2015.

The three diplomats said the sanctions were not linked to efforts to revive the nuclear deal, which the United States pulled out of but now seeks to re-join.

That deal made it harder for Iran to amass the fissile material needed for a nuclear bomb - a goal it has long denied - in return for sanctions relief.The EU revoked its broader set of economic and financial sanctions on Iran in 2016 after the nuclear deal was struck, although it did impose sanctions on an Iranian intelligence unit and two of its staff in 2019, alleging Tehran plotted attacks in Denmark, France and the Netherlands. In a rare move last September, France, Britain and Germany summoned Iran’s envoys to admonish them over their country’s human rights record in what France’s foreign ministry said were “serious and constant violations.”

WCB Pensioner brutally chopped to death in home

A

68-year-old pensioner of West Coast Berbice, who lived alone, was found murdered in his home with chop wounds about his face, torso and arms yesterday by police and relatives.

Dead is Surajdeo Deochand, of Lot 35, No.3 Village, West Coast Berbice.

Relatives of the dead man told Kaieteur News that they received a call around 17:30 hrs. yesterday informing them that Deochand was chopped up in the home.

“Somebody call and seh how somebody chop up uncle and then we call the police and when they go they see he chop up,” a grieving relative said.

A nephew who did not want to be named said that his uncle’s body was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital and when he arrived, he saw him wrapped in a sheet on the stretcher.

He said that he unwrapped the sheet and saw that Deochand’s hand was severed, his stomach had chop wounds and his face was also brutally disfigured with chops.

Up to press time, the police were still on the scene.

Kaieteur News was reliably informed that Deochand was one of the men accused in the double murder of the two teenage boys from No. 3 Village.

He was previously detained and released during the police investigations.

Playing their home game away and the second and final of this March window of the Concacaf leg of qualifying, Guyana rebounded from a 0-3 loss to Trinidad and Tobago last Thursday also here in the Dominican Republic to be back in the race, Saint Kitts and Nevis heads Group F with 6-points from their two matches with Trinidad and Tobago on 4 from two, Guyana 3 from two, Puerto Rico one from two and Bahamas 0 from their two matches.

Head Coach Márcio Máximo did promise that his charges would be much more disciplined in their approach to the game and that was evident as they controlled and dominated the Bahamas team for the entire match.

It did not take long for the hungry ‘Golden Jaguars’ to stamp their authority,

The Guyana team played more like they are known for with the likes of Emery Welshman, Trayon Bobb, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Harriott, Kadel Daniel and company creating various challenges for the Bahamas.

No more goals came in the opening stanza of the match and while the Guyanese enjoyed a slim one goal advantage, Coach Máximo was not pleased with their performance and informed that he was very pointed with his charges at the break.

Pernel Schultz replaced Keanu Marsh-Brown, while the nippy and aggressive 18 year-old Omari Glasgow (baby of the team) came in for Callum Harriott. This move invigorated the Guyanese with Glasgow getting into the act almost immediately.

Marsh-Brown just before being substituted missed a penalty that was saved by the Bahamian goalie, Ian Lowe, Welshman being the player who was brought down in the area.

second match at this level, Glasgow inked his name in the history books by scoring a classical free kick just outside the box; he placed the ball like a matured player into the right corner, beating the wall and Lowe in the process.

Phillips hammers 102 for GCC as NY Tri State U-15 & GCC U-17s hit by rain

n a game that was switched from Bourda to MYO due to the unplayable condition of the ground, GCC U-17s and the touring New York Tri State contest was washed out yesterday in a match reduced to 30 from 50 overs due to a sharp shower just before Lunch and a second shower 10 overs into the second innings.

An explosive 102 from Rivaldo Phillips from just 73 balls with 10 fours and seven sixes helped GCC to 187 all out in 29 overs as Ali Virk, Arya Gorg and Nikhil Mudaliar had two wickets each.

New York Tri State were 35-2 when play was washed out by a second shower.

GCC opted to bat on the tiny ground in cloudy conditions and soon Shaahid Viera (6) fell before Marlon Ramsuresh (6) fell 11 runs later a left-arm pacer Ali Virk struck twice on a slow track.

Zachary Jodah (1) was removed by Arya Gorg, another left-arm seam, to leave the Bourda boys on 383.

Phillips was in pugnacious mood, and was joined by Aryan Persaud and the pair carried GCC to 66 as the sun came out in all its glory before Persaud’s stumps were dismantled by Gorg for 13.

But once the 28-run stand was broken the righthanded Phillips changed gear and had a quick 20-run stand with Darious Andrews before Andrews was stumped off the pint-sized Anshrai Rai at 86-5.

Phillips continued to pepper the small boundaries and slog-swept the off-spin of skipper Nayan Elammurugah for four to reach his half century before he celebrated the landmark next with a massive six into the GNIC over Woolford Avenue, which brought up the 100.

Phillips was lucky not be run out when the wicketkeeper dropped the return while breaking the wicket and the powerful Philips then pulled Nikhil Mudaliar for a blistering boundary to reach his century before throwing his wicket away at 149-6.

Only Krsna Singh with 13 with a six and a four reached double figures as the

last four wickets fell for 36 runs although Gorg was taken off the bowling for a couple of head high full tosses in one over.

After that heavy shower sent the players off the field and early lunch was taken.

When the visitors began their reply, they quickly lost Dongre who was bowled by Persaud for six at 8-1, while Mudaliar (6) was bowled by Charles at 24-2.

Vtkarsh Srivastava (10) stroked Persaud gloriously for four past cover before an imperious cover drive reached the boundary like a bullet from a gun.

Rain again stopped play for the second and final time after 10 overs.

The tourists are scheduled to play Everest today at Everest.

Seventh seeded Aryna Sabalenka expressed more concern over the vaccine than her quarterfinal opponent number one Ash Barty while fifth seed Elina Svitolina said she was inclined to take the advice of friends and wait.

“So far I don’t really trust it,” Sabalenka told reporters following her fourth round 6-1 6-2 mugging of Marketa Vondrousova.

“It’s tough to say, but I don’t really want it yet and I don’t want my family take it.

“If I will have to do it, then of course I have to do it because our life is a travel life.”

Of major concern for Sabalenka is how quickly the vaccines were produced, the number that are now available and which one might be best for her.

“So I think this is not enough time to make the good one.”

‘Sanasie not automatically disqualified after GCB elections’ - CWI vice president Shallow points to fact independent candidates eligible

SportsMax - Cricket West Indies (CWI) vice president, Dr Kishore Shallow, does not expect the recent Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) elections to affect the candidacy of former GCB secretary Anand Sanasie as independent candidates are allowed to run for the post of the presidency.

On Monday, the GCB elected Guyana businessman Bissoondyal Singh to the post of president of the association, with Rabindranauth Saywack and Hilbert Foster set to serve as vice-presidents and Ronald Williams named secretary.

Sanasie is part of a twoman slate set to challenge incumbent vice CWI president Ricky Skerritt, with Barbados’ Calvin Hope set to challenge Shallow for t h e v i c e - p r e s i d e n c y.

Following the election, however, Sanasie would no

longer be a member of the board, and as such speculation arose regarding the future of the challenge.

Shallow, however, expects Sanasie to be on the slate when the election takes place on April 11.

“Independent persons can be nominated for the post of president and vicepresident, so he is not automatically disqualified,” Shallow explained.

“You don’t have to be a voting member or a shareholder to be eligible to be a candidate and that means both his and the nomination of his running mate would stand at this point,” he added.

The CWI elections were scheduled to be held last weekend but was postponed after a quorum could not be reached, following the absence of representatives from Guyana and Barbados.

AAG hosts third Guyanese T&T-based Delroy development meet Tyrrell wins full scholarship Local athletes priming for National Championships

m m a n u e l Archibald, D e v a u g h n Barrington, Attoya Harvey and Anfernee Headecker all put in stellar performances to emerge head of the pack in their individual events when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) held their third developmental meet of the year at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC) on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD), Sunday last.

AAG’s Olympic hopeful; Archibald, won the feature men’s open 100m race in a decent time of 10.35s.

However, as the University of the West Indies (MONA) Campus athlete need to go faster to make the 10.05s Olympic standard but he had shared with Kaieteur Sport that although the target may seem far away, he just wants to consistently run faster.

In his pet event, the

men’s long jump, Archibald landed at a top distance of 7.83m to win the event, almost a meter off his 8.22m target for Olympic Qualification.

Barrington, who won the men’s 400m at the last meet earlier this month, finished men’s 800min 1m 57.19s ahead of the pack. Trailing close behind were Headecker who was just a second slower and was chased closely by Nicholas Daw who finished third in a time of 1m 58.63s.

There was no stopping Anfernee in the men’s 1500m and he made light work of the competition to win in a time of 4m 07s ahead of seasoned campaigner, Cleveland Thomas (4m 09s) and Ronell Newton in third with a time of 4m 13s.

Attoya Harvey earned a middle-distance double after winning the under-17 girls’ 800m in 2m 26s and the

under-17 girls’ 1500m in 4m 58s.

Other standout athletes on Sunday included Shaquka Tyrell (girls under-20 400m), Cassey Small (women’s 100m), Wesley Tyndall (under-20 boys’ 100m), Mark Jhalu (men’s high jump), Keliza Smith (women’s 200m) and Anisha Gibbons (women’s shot put).

The athletes would’ve u s e d S u n d a y ’ s developmental meet as the perfect precursor to the highstakes National Championship that is scheduled for the weekend of April 17-18. According to the AAG, athletes that perform favorably at the National Championships will be selected to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the South American Senior Championships which will be the absolute last chance for qualification for the Tokyo Olympics for many athletes.

Guyanese Trinidad-based swimmer Delroy Tyrrell has been awarded a Full Scholarship to study Biology at the Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky, U.S.A. The Tidal Wave Aquatics swimmer received the Christian Leadership Wesley Scholarship.

Each year, the Wesley Scholars Programme selects two undergraduate students who show promise to become future leaders in the church. Wesley Scholars receive a scholarship for full tuition, room and board.

Delroy Tyrrell, who is in upper six at the Trinity College, will swim for the Lindsey Wilson College swim team, the Blue Raiders. The swimmer is currently preparing to complete his upper six studies, while preparing for the next ASATT Long Course swim meet in May where he hopes to register a qualifying time in the 100 backstrokes for Junior Pan-Ams later this year.

This is the first time that an international student has been given the award and also the first time that a swimmer is the recipient.

Delroy will leave in August to begin his studies and swimming career with Lindsey Wilson College. His parents, sibling, family and friends wish him all the best and are thankful to God and his coaches Mrs. Hazel Haynes and Chabeth Haynes for their tireless effort over the years.
