Guyana moves to up production at Liza field * as global supply pressures increase * Crude cargo heads to Europe for first time next month

E

xxonMobil and its partners, Hess Corporation and CNOOC, are gearing to ramp up oil production at the Stabroek Block’s Liza Field as the Russia-Ukraine crisis continues to drive more supply shocks in the global oil market. In fact, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hess Corporation, John Hess, recently noted at the 50th Annual Scotia Howard Weil Energy Conference that the Liza Destiny, Guyana’s first floating, production, storage a n d o ff l o a d i n g v e s s e l (FPSO) is up for a planned turn around this month. He said this includes production optimization. Previously, Hess’ Chief Operating Officer, Greg Hill had disclosed that such works could increase the Liza Destiny’s operating capacity to the range of 140,000 barrels to 150,000 barrels of oil per day. The vessel is currently operating at nameplate capacity which totals 120,000 barrels of oil per day. As for the Liza Unity,

Guyana’s second FPSO which began first oil last month is also poised to be optimized so that it can achieve nameplate capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil per day by month end. Hill had previously disclosed that the Liza Unity will also see a 10 to 15 percent increase in production later on. Kaieteur News previously reported that the Liza Unity arrived in Guyana in October 2021, following construction in shipyards in China and Singapore. It is moored in water depth of about 1,650 meters and will be able to store approximately two million barrels of crude oil. The Liza Unity is the world’s first FPSO to be awarded the SUSTAIN-1 notation by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in recognition of the sustainability of its design, documentation and operational procedures. As production enhancements continue at the Liza Phase One and Two Projects, Guyana’s oil is expected to make a rare

voyage this year to Europe as global market suppliers seek alternatives to Russian oil. This is according to a special report by Argus Media’s Amanda Hilow yesterday where it was noted that ExxonMobil placed the Suezmax tanker Homeric on subjects to travel from Guyana to Europe starting April 3 with a cargo of nonheated crude, according to shipping fixture reports. Argus Media also stated that the empty tanker is currently in transit to the FPSO Liza Destiny after recently offloading at Turkish refiner Tupras’ Tutunciftlik/Izmit refinery. Its information in this regard was pulled from Vo r t e x a , a n e n e r g y intelligence provider delivering the most comprehensive view of waterborne crude oil and refined oil products available today. Argus Media disclosed that most medium sweet Liza crude has traveled to the US and Singapore since ExxonMobil started production at the deepwater Stabroek block in December 2019.

A small volume went to Europe for the first time in November 2021 — when less than 10,000 barrels was loaded for delivery to the UK, likely co-loaded with a larger cargo for Singapore that loaded the same month, according to an analysis of customs data. OTHER PROJECTS ON TRACK Hess’ Boss was keen to note that the third development on the Stabroek block at the Payara Field, utilizing the Prosperity FPSO, is on track for production startup in 2024 with a production capacity of approximately 220,000 gross barrels of oil per day. He said too that the field development plan and application for environmental authorization have been submitted for government and regulatory review for the fourth development at Yellowtail, with a production capacity of approximately 250,000 gross barrels of oil per day and startup expected in 2025. Approval is likely by month end.

Hess Corporation CEO, John Hess

The CEO said his company continues to see potential for at least six FPSOs with a production capacity of more than 1 million gross barrels of oil per day at the Stabroek Block in 2027, with the potential for up to 10 FPSOs to develop the gross discovered recoverable resources currently estimated at more than 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Hess said, “We look forward to continuing to work with the Government and the people of Guyana to realize the remarkable potential of the Stabroek

Block for the benefit for all stakeholders. The world will need these low cost oil resources to meet future energy demand and help ensure an affordable, just and secure energy transition.” The Stabroek Block is 6.6 million acres. ExxonMobil affiliate Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited is operator and holds 45 percent interest in the Stabroek Block. Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. holds 30 percent interest and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited holds 25 percent interest.

Female cop seeks legal redress over racial slurs and assault A policewoman is pressing for charges to be brought against Attorney-atLaw Nirvan Singh, son of former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Carl Singh who allegedly verbally assaulted her using racial slurs on March 20 at his Cummings and Middle Streets residence. Shawnette Boilers WC15555, in a letter from her lawyer Eusi Anderson, also accused the younger Singh of spitting on her. She said she is an employee of the Guyana Police Force and was assigned to guard duties at the Georgetown location where the younger Singh lives with his father. The letter said that on March 20, around 22:13 hours, “in the dark of night, you unleashed an unprovoked, verbal tirade of racially charged insults to her saying, among other things, “monkey”, “black monkey”; Black people have

no purpose in life and “get out, get off of my property.”” The letter said Singh was loud and aggressive and repeatedly violated the rank’s personal space by coming some two inches of her face to cause saliva droplets to touch her. On the same night, Singh was

accused of chasing the rank from his residence and following her some distance away, “…further assaulting her, spitting at and on her and spewing vile words.” Fearful for her life, the female rank reportedly fled the location and reported the matter to her superiors who

despite her complaints, caused her to return to S i n g h ’s r e s i d e n c e t o continue her duties. It was said that on March 21, the older Singh reportedly apologised to the rank on behalf of his son. Anderson said in the letter however, that the Singh’s actions, “…in their most polite description, constitute diverse civil and criminal wrongs,” and that his client is hopeful that the Guyana Police Force would institute the necessary charges. Boiler, at the age of 32, is working to acquire her CXC certification and will sit the exam in May. The matter however, has left the woman, “…unhinged and staring into space as she reflects on the ordeal she endured in the dark hours alone that night of 20th March, 2022.” It was noted too that the ordeal also took place on the woman’s

wedding anniversary. “She is adamant that complaints must be lodged with the Bar Association and all Attorney regulatory bodies locally and internationally. She is adamant that complaints be lodged with all human rights, women rights and Black Rights bodies locally and i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y. ” T h e lawyer’s letter stated that silence from local representing bodies has emboldened the female police rank to expose the matter and take measures to verify her story. “She is making arrangements to take a public lie detector test (polygraph test) on national television and Facebook live to underscore the integrity and veracity of her claims. She has directed me to institute a “lawsuit” to use her words. Same will be forthcoming irrespective of

your actions or omissions. She has directed me to record that she is not afraid of any official or unofficial victimization that may follow her decision to stand firmly in her human dignity and basic right to be a proud Black woman.” The lawyer’s letter has suggested a public apology both written and oral from Singh in the next 24 hours. “I humbly suggest that same be deeply contrite and equal to the damage done. I humbly suggest that whilst doing so you consider a fair amount of financial compensation to offer her. Same can be made to me in writing in short order, considering the damage done to her and the steps she proposes to take n a t i o n a l l y a n d internationally,” Anderson wrote. Anderson reminded Singh that the world is still in (Continued on page 22)

America and Guyana For reasons great and small, little Guyana has always featured mightily in the plans and visions of big powers, especially America. Countless citizens have paid a harsh and painful price for Americas actions in Guyana, which makes for a better caption than the one in this writing. It could be much more pointed, re-titled as: Guyana in the hands of America. It is fascinating that a country way down South, such as Guyana, and with a population not as much as a million, could feature this prominently in big power interests and calculations for almost three quarters of a century now. America has been the most dominant force, and this is when it didnt appear to be involved, was distant, and not quite troubled by what was going on here. But appearances can be deceiving, and there are few as good as the Americans at this big power politics, and the strategies that come from them. We have a visitor today from the U.S. State Department. A well-credentialed one, who has been around the block, made several laps around it. She is here in the person of Deputy Assistant Secretary, Ms. Barbara A. Feinstein. Given this newest face, this latest in the round of State Department arrivals, it is obvious that Guyana means much to America, and that its people are firmly committed to keeping a close eye on things local, and a steady hand on matters domestic. As we at this publication say welcome to our distinguished visitor, her ranging meeting agenda is what tells the story of Americas interests and American priorities. It is so different from what went before oil, and to provide a good picture to our fellow Guyanese, we must look back and go back all the way to one Cheddi Jagan, avowed Marxist, dogged Communist. There was none more genuinely and deeply red than him, unlike those who struggle vainly (while similarly brightly shirted) to fill his huge shoes, but who stumble all over their sorry, silly selves. To revisit Guyanas shaky history in the hands of America, Cheddi Jagan was the enemy. A man and leader who could have breach the foreign policy principle of containment, and contributed to the domino effect in Latin America. From Americas perspective, that could not be allowed to happen. The mere thought of it was enough to introduce chills, with those Venezuelan oilfields in the vicinity. Somehow, oil always seems to be part of the volatile, combustible political mix. When oil flares, people get burned. This was Dr. Jagans fate and to the wilderness of the opposition he went. America did not have the time of day for him, while he languished, with even his visa being revoked, while he toiled fruitlessly in barren opposition land. Now, we fast forward past the decades to today, and here is America in action again, very much in the middle of Guyanas rich action. There is oil for starters, just so that nobody forgets. The once dreadful PPP/C was given a boost, with considerable American assistance in the problematic 2020 local elections affairs. But now there is a difference in Americas conduct of its business that keeps repeating itself. Unlike the PPP of yore, and Cheddi Jagan when he was in the opposition, the PNC still finds itself highly favored. It might appear to be sudden to the slothful and disengaged, but the PNC opposition features significantly in Americas considerations. It is why Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Barbara Feinsteins agenda, includes a meeting with Guyanas opposition (and civil society). We cut to the chase with this talk about meeting with the opposition, and call it for what it is; meeting with primarily the PNC. The recognition that Cheddi Jagan couldnt get for donkey years, Aubrey Norton receives in a New York minute. It has to do with oil. It is as plain and simple as that. It is the oil, stupid. America wants peace and stability in Guyana, for when there are those, there is security. There is security for Exxons oil operations and there is security for Americas business interests, which means continuity and prosperity. So, Mr. Norton benefits from a visit; so, too, agitating civil society groups.

BATTLE ON KN, WE ARE WITH YOU DEAR EDITOR, hanks to KN and Glenn Lall, many people around the world are now knowing the true costs to Guyana and Guyanese of what the exploitation of Guyana’s oil and other resources are, a few of us has known this all along, but it was KN and Glenn Lall that has brought this to centrestage. Some PPP supporters like me are now watching with dumbfounded disbelief as, the PPP government is siding with the oil companies and fighting against their own people for taxes that Guyana should have rightfully received to fund its much needed social spending programmes, also the PPP

T

Government failure to address insurance and environmental concerns, the government instead rails against people who brings us these issues. However, with all the information presented by Glenn Lall, Guyanese still have not responded in numbers as they should have, for many, criticising one’s party is to support the rival party so they stay silent, many does not understand the true value of Guyana’s Resource Losses, as Guyanese basically have a small minded mentality, just be better than your neighbour as progress, not knowing what the real big prize is, which is over two trillion US Dollars, the whole world knows this except Guyanese it seems, as their

lackadaisical behaviour towards this issue continues, so far after three years of oil production, Guyana has received 600 million and a bill for 9.5 billion USD and everything about this oil contract continues to be secretive. The rice farmers in Berbice have woken up, the message was sent to the Government, fix the problems they promised when they took office or leave, as in this world, with supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine, the price of grain has skyrocketed, but rice framers can’t get good prices for their paddy. Guyanese however, cannot be blamed for their lackadaisical attitude towards the resources exploitation as most Guyanese live on the coast

and most of the resource mining take place in the interior and the oil drilling is offshore, both out of sight. So battle on KN and Glenn Lall, my recommendation to wake Guyanese up is for you to make a new T-shirt slogan GUYANA IS WORTH OVER 2 TRILLION $US DOLLARS - WHERE IS MY SHARE? Answering this question will be uncomfortable for parliamentarians both opposition and ruling and those aspiring to be in government, mostly it will be uncomfortable for the foreigners who walk around as if they own Guyana, as in every revolution it start with a powerful message, that is message I propose. HAVE WE LOST REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE AND RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER? DEAR EDITOR, I am troubled. There’s a disturbing trend that has been permeating our society. I’m referring to the ready use of weapons, and particularly the knife - not to cut or carve meat, but to chop and plunge into the chest or abdomen or limb of a fellow human being - brother, sister, husband, wife, neighbour! What really is on the mind of the perpetrator when he/she deals that sometimes fatal blow? Do these individuals think of the consequences of their actions? of the agony that follows for those whose loved ones are disfigured, dismem-

bered or dead; and for the perpetrator, the many years in prison, away from family and friends and pursuit of meaningful existence (if spared the hangman’s noose!). I’m calling on us all to take stock! Have we lost regard for human life and respect for each other? Is it that we need counselling sessions on anger management and constructive reminders of the value of human life and the importance of every human being? Why should one school child clobber another in the head and fracture his skull because of a misunderstanding? I remember school days

long ago when disagreements were sometimes settled with fistic encounters, normally postponed until Friday, but never with the use of a weapon or debilitating tool! There’s a song that says: “We need to get back to the basics of life.” I would like to suggest two basics - Fear of God and regard for man (each other). If we are undergirded by those values, we would not, indeed cannot hurt or despise each other. As I close...Can the report be true that a practising lawyer spat in the face of a police officer performing security

functions at his residence as he hurled derogatory and racist remarks at her while threatening her with a gun and that this troubling abuse persisted beyond those premises? Thankfully, this Nation is blessed with a professional Police Force, which dispenses justice without regard to social class or political connections, and of course, a credible and competent Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC)! Or am I singing with John Lennon in his well- known song “Imagine”...”You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one...? Claudia Heywood

Transforming Attitudes could sharply Reduce Road Fatalities and Accidents DEAR EDITOR, Every human life is precious. It must be protected at all costs. Sadly, the incidence of road fatalities is one indicator that defies this maxim. While the Guyana Police Force (GPF) can present statistics to show that the rate of road fatalities/accidents has declined for 2021 compared with 2020, those statistics fails to capture the catalytic impact road fatalities/accidents have on human suffering and the socio-economic loss to families and their communities. How and under what circumstances many of these road fatalities/accidents happen, rattles the mind. Nevertheless, from these fatalities/accidents important lessons could be drawn on how to prevent them, while focusing on the dire need for drivers to embrace good “attitudes.” Lachman Sukham was al-

legedly racing when his motorcar crashed into a truck at the Borlam Turn, Corentyne that resulted in his death as well as that of his co-occupant Danny Puran. Then there is the other horrific story of three men being killed and two others injured after being struck by a speeding vehicle driven by a youth at De Willem, West Coast Demerara. With these and other distressing stories making the headlines, the public cannot remain indifferent but must rally for immediate action to halt this carnage. Rohan Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (rtd) has illustrated a probable cause of road fatalities/accidents through an analysis of data on the grant of drivers licences for the years 2016/ 2017. The various levels of corruption at the GPF Traffic Department have been enumerated of which two are re-

ported here: (i) 397 persons did not write examinations but received pass marks, and (ii) 1,153 or 20.23% of all transactions “conducted by the Traffic Department in all Divisions checked for the period were fraudulent.” Clinton Conway, former Asst. Police Commissioner supports Mr. Rohans claim of police corruption and cites his own survey post 2019: “The evidence gathered revealed that over 90 percent of those who went to the Driving Schools to learn to drive already had in their possession their drivers licences. No wonder there is a high number of traffic accidents, particularly fatalities.” While there have been suggestions that road traffic fatalities/accidents might be correlated with questionable issuance of drivers licences, such correlation is not necessarily casual. For example, if there exists, a correlation

(this means that greater corruption in the form of granting licences to unqualified drivers) would lead to higher road fatalities/accidents. Alternatively, if corruption is reduced, then road fatalities would also be reduced. However, the Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill reports on the contrary that road fatalities have declined by 28.7%; that is, from 139 in 2020, to 99 in 2021. There are other intervening variables, like better traffic enforcement and presence of CTVs camera that could help to explain this drop, other than the lessening of corruption. . While further probing into any casual correlation between corruption and road traffic accidents should be pursued, this should not detract from other law enforcements initiatives to reduce fatalities/accidents. Minister Vindhya Persaud concerned about utterly disrespectful statements DEAR EDITOR, I find Mr. Malcolm Harrypauls letter, published in Kaieteur and Stabroek News on March 23, 2022 titled “Hindu wedding house violence and ignorance” offensive and disrespectful to the Hindu Community. His statements, which, include that “it is Hindus who throw Hinduism into the gutter, “Hindu wedding houses are characterised by rum and noise and chop up”, “nonHindus conclude that rum and noise are part of Hindu culture and chopping up is really blood sacrifice to the Gods” and that ignorance “is a daily feature of Hindus” are reprehensible. He spews hatred at the Hindu community, which reeks of intolerance. Mr. Harrypaul must apologise to the Hindu community for his distasteful

comments and his labelling of an entire religious community as ignorant, violent and noise nuisances.Records will show that on behalf of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, I have issued many public statements and written to the Guyana Revenue Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs and Guyana Police Force, requesting that permission not be granted for alcohol bars at Hindu wedding ceremonies. Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha has mounted public campaigns on this issue and our affiliated Pandits do NOT conduct weddings where bars are present. In addition, all events of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha have a strict “no alcohol policy”. Mr. Harrypaul speaks from an uninformed position and seeks to castigate the entire Hindu community and Guyana Hindu Dharmic

Sabha through the most disgusting invectives. While the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha does not support bars at Hindu weddings, sale and provision of alcohol to minors, and the disturbance of communities by loud noise, we will not tolerate abuse and disrespect of the Hindu community and our religious practices, and the suggestion that conversion of the Hindus is the answer to “rum, noise and chop-up”. I call on all Hindu leaders and the wider community to condemn the sentiments expressed by Mr. Harrypaul and insist that he apologises to the Hindu community and withdraws these utterly disrespectful statements. Sincerely, Vindhya Vasini Persaud President Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha

Offer PhD Scholarships in return for serving nation DEAR EDITOR, Guyanese and West Indians in general are awed or obsessed and possessed with ‘doctor politics’ and doctor title, the concept that those with “Dr” in front a name carries knowledge, expertise, respect and prestige. The ‘doctor’ is treated with reverence. This laudable recognition by the public leads to some Guyanese pursuing doctorate. However, some pursue ‘doctorate’ for sinister objective to deceive and fool a gullible public. There are several Guyanese with questionable credentials. Others, like me for example, pursued it for a skill to make a meaningful contribution to society or to earn an honest living as I did as an educator. Government should offer scholarships to youngsters to pursue doctorate in STEM

Transforming Attitudes could sharply... From page 4 Minister Edghill notes: “the vulnerable class of road users (pedal cyclists, motor cyclists and pedestrians)” comprised 67.7% of the total road deaths in 2021 [while] in 2020 that proportion was 79.9%. Pedal and motorcyclists alone constituted 37.4% of road fatalities, compared with 56.1% in 2020. To reinforce Minister Edghills concern, a 31-year-old motorcyclist, Joshua I. Ramdeen, was killed after colliding with a Canter in New Amsterdam on March 22, 2022. And a 37-year-old driver on March 18, 2022, allegedly fatally struck down 2 persons on the No. 70 Public Road, Corentyne. Enforcement work should, therefore, zero into these atrisk groups, and then spread out to others who drive under influence of alcohol. Many accidents are caused by speeding and with drivers not observing the speed limits. Minister Edghill notes the “reckless and uncaring manner” of some drivers. This concern raises a fundamental point: “attitude” on the road. If a driver does not have the right attitude and flouts the rules, then the probability of accidents rises. Why is it that men, for example, are more than four times more likely to be involved in accidents than women? One explanation is that there are fewer women motorists, but this alone cannot explain the difference. The vital variable is “attitude.” Women approach to driving is based more on caution and responsibility as well as

embracing a favourable attit u d e . Victims of road fatalities/accidents want drivers to operate with courtesy and observe road safety rules. They want to weed out corruption from the licensing process and tough enforcement of the road traffic rules. They want a greater role to be played by the National Road Traffic and Safety Council. They also want motor vehicle certifications to be done by state-licensed mechanic shops, and not by the police. And a special unit of the GRA

should issue drivers licence and not the police. In this way, police could focus on traffic enforcement, crime prevention and detection. There are three major social pathologies that afflict Guyana: road fatalities, murders, and suicides, none of which has a constituency, which can rally on victims behalf. These social pathologies originate out of “rage,” a condition, which the process of social adaptation has failed to tame. Combined with other social ills, they point towards the

cracks in the social fabric of society, and which signal the existence of underlying causes that could become explosive if these are not addressed appropriately. And the prospect of a good life to usher with Guyanas oil wealth, cannot be built upon a social structure that is infected with lethal viruses. Sustained efforts must be made to neutralise these negative forces (road fatalities, murders, and suicides) through attitudinal changes, among others. Dr. Tara Singh

subjects to serve the nation. People tend to be awestruck with those who are referred to as ‘doctor’, seeing them as brilliant even if not. Some mistakenly believe that ‘doctor’ equals medical or dentistry. Some local Guyanese came to me for medical advice; I am not medical doctor. Anyone can be conferred the title doctor if successfully pursue a course of study at an accredited university. It is a title earned from a course of academic studies (like Biology or History or Engineering or some other subject) or through lifetime achievements for contributions towards society. The latter is called a honourary doctorate conferred by an accredited university on selected well known figures. The public tends to show deference for those with doctorates regardless if earned from academia or honourary. The public is supportive of and admire those with the title of doctor and tends to gravitate towards them in politics or

community affairs or other aspects of life as they did towards Cheddi Jagan, Eric Williams, etc. But having a doctorate does not make someone smarter or better than those without it. Not everyone with the doctor title is actually a doctor (medical, technical, science, academic, etc). There are fraudsters who call themselves doctor to impress or deceive the public. There are some who buy the title, as separate from those who studied a particular academic subject at graduate school at a recognised accredited university. There are some who have been conferred honourary doctorates for lifetime achievement and deservingly so; among the latter are Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Dr. Yesu Persaud, Dr. Vishnu Bandhu, etc. Among those who studied for a doctorate are Tarron Khemraj, Ashni Singh, Irfaan Ali (President), David Dabydeen, Ramesh Gampat, Clive Thomas, Omowale, Tara Singh, (Continued on page 6)

DEAR EDITOR, There has been considerable discussion in the press about the fate of the sugar industrys Packaging Plant located at East Demerara Estate (Enmore), and its future transition to Albion/PM Estate on the Corentyne. Neither the termination date of the operations at the current location has been confirmed, nor the initiation of operations at the future location has been clarified. In the interval, it seems possible that the transparent transaction was neither seen nor heard by GuySuCo in the first instance, nor by the Union concerned, GAWU. The quietude of both is therefore most eloquent about the honouring of the Collective Bargaining Agreements provision for Severance Pay, following termination of services in the sugar industry. The obfuscatory remarks about their being retrained and absorbed into a new organisation lack cred-

ibility, more so coming reputedly from a Minister, who should be advised by his more authoritative counterpart the Minister of Labour. For there is no gainsaying that the workers have a choice, particularly in the light of their earlier terminated counterparts being compensated by both severance payments and hefty grants. At the same time there can be no guarantee that all of them, however willing, will necessarily adjust to the new technological job requirements, and if so, at what comparable conditions of employment, like free medical benefits for self and family, contributory hospitalisation scheme, pension, etc. Surely, GAWU will seek full protection for these members in the interest of human development. Offer PhD Scholarships in return... From page 5 Somdat Mohabir, Ganga Ramdass, Gary Girdharie, Lomarsh Roopnarine, Leslie Ramsammy, Swami Aksharananda, Baytoram Ramharack, Paloma Mohamed, myself, and so many others. Then there are the medical or dental doctors like Bobbie Ramroop, Clive Jagan, Reyad Rahman, etc. There are also divinity doctors — granted a doctorate in bible studies. And some have doctorate in Education [EdD]). Then there are what are known as the ‘kak’ doctors who purchased degrees at universities without walls. They didn’t pursue a course of study. They paid for a diploma of several thousand American dollars from a diploma mill with a university name. You pay for a degree and it is mailed to you within days of receipt of the money. There is no study involved. It does not mean that those who purchased degrees are not talented or lack abilities and skills. Some are very bright, very articulate, and skillful and have the ability to pursue a course of study for a PhD. I know of “kak” degree holders who write extremely well and or own or managed successful businesses. Some also do well at government offices. A purchased diploma is not recognised and is not meant for use for hiring purposes although some gullible businesses may unknowingly accept such a diploma for hir-

ing and promotion. There are several Guyanese who have “kak” doctorates. Some use it to fool a gullible public. No university in Guyana is accredited to award a doctorate except for UG medical school. Private universities in Guyana are known to issue degrees, including medical degrees and PhD that are not recognised in many places. Some are linked to other online universities awarding degrees. They don’t have a course of study. Universities in America and many other countries tend not to accept them for admission into higher degree programmes. There are students who pursue online degree course of study; they are not taken seriously by other regular academic colleges although the degree is recognised. Many Guyanese, as a result of COVID, are now enrolled in online courses. Some Indian universities are offering scholarships on line for a degree course of study. Online courses don’t provide the same level of discipline and knowledge as in person education. Those with a genuine (academic) doctorate tend to pursue a lengthy course of study that takes minimum seven years full time and many more years part time. I studied full time as did several others like Ramharack, Khemraj, Ramsammy, Mohabir, etc. In my case, I did multiple doctorates. In the

USA, one gains admission into a doctoral programme after completion of an undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree) in a chosen subject of specialisation. Some universities require admission and completion of a Master’s Degree before acceptance into the doctoral programme for the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) as was the case with me and so many other Guyanese. The undergraduate degree is four years full time course of study with specialisation in a subject; in my case, it was Bio-Chemistry. The Masters is minimum one year full time plus a comprehensive exam and a thesis — that could take up to another year. And the PhD is minimum two years full time plus two written comprehensive exams, two oral exams, a lengthy (of some 300 pages) dissertation. Some dissertations are known to be up to 500 pages. And a defense of the dissertation is mandatory, called a viva. The dissertation is not a term paper; a fifty page paper is not a thesis or dissertation. A dissertation must be on a new, original concept not previously studied. There is a methodology that must be followed in research and writing. Students are known to fail the dissertation — in the writing, or research, or oral presentation. They are questioned about it. The student body is invited to the defense and can ask questions. The faculty team with a minimum

of three examiners and an outside campus examiner decides on pass or fail and whether to recommend granting the PhD. The faculty could require revision of the dissertation and re-examination. To pursue a degree in the USA, students take courses with each worth a number of fixed credits. If they pass the course, with grades A thru D, credits are awarded. One course is three or four credits; D is a barely pass and too many Ds lead to expulsion from the university. An overall C grade is needed for a degree. A total of 128 to 132 credits (some 32 in a specific subject) are required for a Bachelor degree. (Some forty courses are needed for a BA degree, some ten of which must be in a specialized subject like Economics or politics or Chemistry, etc). I completed my degree with 172 credits, 40 in excess. And additional 30 credits or ten courses are required for the MA and 60 credits or 20 courses for the PhD (MA credits included if in same subject). Guyanese should desist from pursuing “kak degrees” as it does not lead to meaningful learning or acquisition of technical and academic skills. The government should encourage youngsters to pursue doctorate with a commitment to serving nation. Yours truly, Vishnu Bisram

This year $5B is allocated in the Budget to ease the cost of living. At a time when Guyanese need it most, our leaders have been dodging the issue.

Only a few days ago, the Vice President was happy to announce that the taxes on fuel have been removed completely! The political language was welcomed with open arms by a few naive citizens, quick to sing praises for the “thoughtfulness” of the administration. It wasn’t long before that their dreams were shattered. It slowly registered in the minds of Guyanese that the taxes have only moved from 10 to zero percent.

Meaning, that gas prices will change by just over $20 per litre, if anything at all, as some gas station managers have already said they will not be reducing the prices. Stay focused Guyana, and demand your rightful share!

He pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleges that on March 7, 2022, at De Willem Public Road, West Coast Demerara, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the deaths of two fishermen: 46year-old Kiran Rampersaud of Zeeburg, WCD and 44year-old Ayube Mohamed of Meten-Meer-Zorg; and

As such, Magistrate AliSeepaul granted bail in the sum of $500,000 on each charge with the condition attached that Ambedkar lodge his passport. The matter was then adjourned to April 26, 2022, for statements. It is alleged that around 21:35hrs on the day in question, Ambedkar was the

driver of a speeding car that ploughed into a parked SUV and a group of individuals in front of a bar located at De Willem Village, killing three of them. It is also alleged that the unlicensed teen driver was involved in a drag race with another vehicle. Ambedkar reportedly lost control of the car, which careened off the road, crashing into a SUV which was parked in front of the bar along with the victims. He was also severely injured as a result of the accident and had to be hospitalised for a few days.

There is no such thing as unlimited liability oil spill insurance coverage I have listened and read carefully and patiently to the numerous complaints and pleadings about the absence of full liability oil spill coverage for oil operations in Guyana. Those making the complaints want to ensure that in the event of an oil spill there will be full compensation for personal, economic and environmental losses. The idea of unlimited oil spill insurance coverage is a fiction. No such thing exists. There also is a difference between full liability coverage and unlimited or full liability insurance. The former is about total liabilities while the latter relates to liabilities covered by insurance. In reality, there is no insurance which can provide unlimited coverage for oil spills. And this why there are usually civil liabilities agreements which aim to provide compensations beyond that covered by insurance. Guyana has no such clause in its Production Sharing Agreement. Unfortunately, in much of the discourse about remedies, the two concepts have been conflated and used interchangeably. References to full liability coverage have been used to refer to full coverage insurance liability. The contentious and highly flawed motion which was filed by a member of the Opposition in the National Assembly, underscores the distinction between full liability compensation and that provided for by insurance. The Motion argues that “the Liza 2 Permit was corrected to ensure unlimited liability for

all spills by including a provision requiring EEPGL’s purchase of the maximum available private insurance offered in the market, with all of the remaining liabilities to be covered by EEPGL’s parent companies – Exxon, Hess and CNOOC…” The Motion therefore, recognises that there is no such thing as unlimited oil spill insurance liability. It speaks to the maximum available private insurance available, with the outstanding liability being shouldered by the oil companies. The Speaker was perfectly in order to demand that the evidence of such an agreement be produced. Without such evidence, the motion cannot be entertained because the motion will be undermined if it is established that no such clause exists in the Liza 2 permit. Unlimited oil spill insurance is a fiction. How does one underwrite an unlimited oil spill insurance coverage? If oil companies were required to provide unlimited oil spill insurance coverage, the oil industry would collapse. There would be no insurance coverage because it would be simply unaffordable. And no oil company will want to assume such risks. Unlimited liability is a different kettle of fish. Under the “polluter pays” principle of international environmental law, oil companies are expected to shoulder economic and environmental compensation associated with oil spills. But in reality they do not, because it is too onerous a burden. In the United States there

is an Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund which helps to offset claims for oil pollution. But this Fund provides limited coverage per oil spill. It is rumoured that in Guyana the operators have taken out insurance to the extent of US$2B. What is not clear is who will cover liabilities in excess of this sum. The government says that it expects the oil companies to do so. But there is no agreement to this effect in writing. In fact, all those who are contending that Exxon had agreed to full coverage liability are yet to indicate why this alleged commitment was not inked on pen and paper. If you don’t have it in writing, it is foolhardy to speak about there being an agreement for full liability coverage. The real concern locally therefore is not about the full coverage insurance. No such thing can exist in the oil industry. The concern is that the locally incorporated oil companies do not have the assets to back the difference between liabilities covered by insurance and that which is likely in the event of a massive oil spill. The government says that it believes that the overseas parent companies will be liable for this difference. But again, not having a full liability coverage agreement exposes the country to major risks in the event of a disastrous oil spill. All that is required to end this debate is for the government, before signing any other permit for the oil companies, to demand that full li-

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN

This is what makes me insanely angry in Guyana Let me preface my anger with what has been revealed about alleged mistreatment by a former employee of the National Parks Commission with a few pertinent remarks. Do the research if you care to and go back to thousands and thousands of columns of mine, and you will find my lamentation of how poor, low income Guyanese are treated by organisations and individuals who claim their raison d’être is justice, democracy and good governance. On the contrary, as I have written several times in the past, their thing is not democracy, but publicity. These people have a psychological void in their lives and it appears that the publicity does something that makes them live. These people will treat with the utmost contempt, the violations of ordinary

people but let the focus be on some prominent person and you will see how the crabs will crawl out for publicity. Let me just give one hypothetical example. An ordinary labourer boards the ferry, and the officials tell him/her the ferry is filled and as the rejected person leave, they take in more passengers. The wronged person writes a letter in the newspaper about this mistreatment. It begins and ends there. But if that passenger that was turned away was a CEO or a prominent professional or eminent official, man oh man, the usual suspects would have published a deluge of letters in the press signed by 65 names. Do you know why? Those 65 names are not interested in justice but publicity. When I was growing up and was active in politics, there was a law firm named

Fitzpatrick and DeCaires that strongly opposed the Burnham dictatorship and would fight Burnham often in the courts. But you could not approach that firm for redress in court for any sugar worker or urban labourer whose rights were violated. Although the firm did consistent pro-bono work for the PPP, it was Mrs. Janet Jagan who would go out of her way to find a lawyer for ordinary people who came to her. I grew up and saw that very syndrome and in deep ways, these things have left a lasting effect on me. In 2012, we had a grassroot organisation named “People’s Parliament”. We took up the case of a group of poor Parika vendors who were evicted illegally by the NDC. We asked a lawyer to litigate the matter for us. He

agreed then, days later, he said cannot continue because it is a losing battle. I asked Neil Parsram, the nephew of Dr. Cheddi Jagan to help. He did the case freely for us and won it. Mr. Parsram was genuine about helping poor people. He was not interested in publicity. When I look back at my days of activism, I know I would get a million libel writs when I expose these things which formed part of my life should I write my memoirs. We come to the opening lines of this column about the fellow who published what the National Park Commission is alleged to be doing to him. If his story is true, then this is just another episode of the sad country we have but more importantly the frightening minds that Guyana is unfortunately saddled with. In the newspapers yesterday, the man, Mr.

Lennon Stevens argues that the Frederick Kissoon National Parks Commission is a board just does not make refusing to award him his s e n s e . I n f a c t , i t i s legally due severance pay unadulterated nonsense. A and other benefits. That is an since he cited them as administrative matter. playing a huge part in Mr. Stevens’ plight isn’t winning his case. going to be taken up by the One of the reasons, Mr. large school of usual Stevens was cited for non- suspects who didn’t want action by his employers is Mike Pompeo to visit that there is no board in Guyana, who were annoyed place. But in 2019 when he that six Haitians were was terminated, there was a arrested, who see everything board. I know there was a wrong with the oil industry board back then. It was in Guyana. And why not? chaired by Dr. Raquel Who knows Mr. Stevens? Thomas and I wrote to her There is no publicity to be about issues in the National gained from helping him. Park. Worms and crabs crawl. Trade unions see bigger role in budding oil and gas economy - slam Labour Minister’s critique of their usefulness By Zena Henry

T

rade unions will play a major role in ensuring the rights of workers and the fair distribution of wealth as Guyana continues to develop through its budding oil and gas sector. This is the sentiment of the Guyana Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU), one of the worker representatives rebuffing claims by Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton that they are useless. Hamilton, in an interview on Globespan 24x7, two days ago opined that labour unions in Guyana had outlived their usefulness and should mordernise their thinking if they are to remain

relevant. However, where Guyana is seeing a growth in most sectors due to increased economic activities, GAWU believes that unions will have a much larger involvement since the country’s development will call for increased labour. The union’s General Secretary, Aslim Singh, told Kaieteur News that, “Guyana is probably on its most transformative period in its post independent period. Obviously this is fuelled by oil and gas being the ignition and development will be spurred in nearly every area and facet of life. Development of course will be meaningful when it is

broad based and everyone is uplifted and improved as a result.” “It is against this background that we see the involvement of Unions which will play a role in ensuring the gains made are shared among the nation’s workers who are the largest constituency in our country.” “More specifically to oil and gas, we believe unions’ relevance remain important and we daresay imperative. We believe that the fact that companies in the sector whether tacitly or not are seeking to dissuade their employees from seeking union representation says a lot in our view.” Singh said, GAWU is not daunted, but is encouraged to further its service to workers.

Labour unions say workers’ representation more relevant in growing oil and gas economy

He said that many workers in the sector continue to reach out and engage the Union and remain heartened by its advocacy on their behalf and recognition of their plight. The General Secretary insisted that while unions address a myriad of issues at the workplace, one of the most important things a union gives workers is workplace respect. “Where workers are seen not as cogs in the wheel but active contributors and partners in their workplaces. We believe unions give workers greater dignity at work when they know there is someone who has their back and looking out for them and their well-being. So we will continue our active work in enhancing unionisation as it is important for all Guyanese workers.” Minister Hamilton has said publicly however that local unions are busy fighting amongst themselves and not offering proper representation to workers. He said that the unions were more interested in collecting union dues. “The only contention they have had in my presence with employers is about salary and wages.” The Minister claimed that of

the 18 unions in Guyana, about half of them represent true people. “....In some instances, a lot of the leaders are not there to represent the people, they are just there to collect the union dues and I am being as frank as I can be on this matter.” Hamilton stated nonetheless, that unions need to mordernise their thinking since for instance, their advocacy for fixed workers over contract workers is not as applicable as it used to be. Especially where the younger generation is concerned, Hamilton insisted that they do not want to work many years doing the same thing, at the same location. “Our time and now is different. Everything is being mordernised. They (young people) see themselves as being multi-skilled and multi- talented, and many young people have skill sets in many areas… “ “So they are preparing for their future. So whilst our generation and people older than us might think the only thing that prepares you for old age is old age pension, working within an establishment, they don’t see it that way. They talk about

now, they talk about building their house now; they talk about buying their automobile now. And being on contract allows them to get money to do that cheaply without interest rates attached to it.” “Now it’s for the union to mordernise their thinking to show themselves worthy of being able to influence workers who would see them as the interlocutor on their behalf.” The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), the largest representative of public servants also had an issue with the Minister’s statement. T h e U n i o n ’s Vi c e President, Dawn Gardner, said that it too was “disappointed” with what the Minister said, especially in an environment where Guyana’s workers are expected to play a bigger role in the country’s development. She said that the union is looking at the Minister’s statement and will address same with a press release. The Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC) said that the government is consistent in its programme of undermining solidarity in the trade union movement and weakening trade unions.

Opposition tables motion for $200,000 cash grants to cushion rising cost of living The APNU+AFC Opposition is expected to lobby for every Guyanese above the age of 18-yearsold to be paid a quarterly cash grant of $200,000 which will compensate for the increase in the cost of living. The Opposition APNU+AFC coalition has submitted a motion to the National Assembly calling on the government to make provisions for every Guyanese above the age of

18 to receive a cash grant of $200,000 to cushion the effects of the rising cost of living. In the motion, the APNU+AFC noted that citizens continue to experience a tremendous health and socio-economic (cost of living) impact from the Coronavirus 19 pandemic. The party said that while the Government of Guyana, in its efforts to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, provided a one-

off $25,000 COVID-19 cash grant, there has been a substantial increase in the cost of essential food items, some doubling or nearly doubling from prepandemic levels, including those grown here in Guyana. As the inflation persists and Guyanese must brace themselves for further increases in the cost of living, the Opposition said the Government of Guyana of failing to devise strategies (Continued on page 22)

GECOM distances self from bogus house-to-house registration officers The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) said it is not visiting homes to conduct registration and has distanced itself from persons who might be doing same. In a media release on Thursday GECOM said it is in receipt of a report that persons have been visiting homes seeking information on the pretext of being employees of this Commission. In this regard, the commission said it is imperative that “we make it abundantly clear that GECOM is not currently engaged in any such exercise, nor has the Commission authorised anyone –employee or otherwise –to collect information from any person for any reason whatsoever through house to-house visits.” “GECOM takes this opportunity to state categorically that, as an integral component of the ongoing registration exercise, Registration Staff and Scrutineers are required to visit the given residential addresses of applicants for

registration to verify that the concerned persons actually live at the addresses they would have provided.” According to GECOM such visits are made only after agreement between the applicant and the concerned GECOM staff would have agreed on a date and time. “GECOM Staff and Scrutineers are required to display their respective identification and accreditation badges throughout all such visits. Accordingly, the general public is hereby cautioned not to recognize any person(s) without GECOM identification as being representatives of this Commission,” the release added. In view of the foregoing, GECOM said citizens are urged to be extremely cautious and not to provide any information to those persons purporting to be GECOM representatives, as their motive is unknown. Persons are asked to contact GECOM on telephone numbers 223-9653, 2255808, or 225-5868 to report or clarify any concerns.

Female cop seeks legal redress over... From page 3 observance of the United Nation’s International Decade for People of African Descent declaration, and posited, “…that speaking to brown and black people in that form was last appropriate about 400 years ago and certainly not in the decade of African people. That any person speaks to a brown person in that manner in 2022, especially in your esteemed office, is both out of time by 400 years and out of place in an era where race is no longer a bastion of insult.” The lawyer urged a swift response to his letter. ACDA condemns action Meanwhile, the African Community Development Association (ACDA) condemned young Singh’s alleged actions. “We view spitting in the face of this African-Guyanese woman in 2022

Guyana as worse than similar actions of white slave makers to Africans. Attorney Nirvan Singh’s conduct has no place in Guyanese society and must be rejected by all Guyanese, regardless of race or class.” The Association said it views this matter as not being isolated, but a symptom of a serious and expanding worsening of race relations in the country. “We condemn the leadership of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for its complicity by its failure to act as required by the law of the land. Guyana is a society based on the rule of law, and no citizen regardless of status or political connection is above the law.” ACDA said it noted an apology from the older Singh, “…but the perpetrator remains unrepentant. Mr. Nirvan Singh is a conscious

offender with no respect for decency and conduct befitting his profession as an officer of the court.” ACDA called on the Guyana Bar Association to take the necessary action against the Attorney for his alleged conduct. The Association said too it notes “The rise of racial triumphalism since the return to office by the PPPC government. This racial, aggression must be stopped in the interest of national unity and peace. Those with the power to end this degenerative conduct must act now or accept responsibility for worsening race relations and the consequences. We demand that immediate charges be laid against Mr. Singh by the relevant authorities. Failure to do so will be viewed as a breakdown of the social contract that binds the society.”

Man pleads guilty to chopping pregnant... From page 17 Mohamed opted to plead to the lesser count and as such his sentencing was deferred to April 7, 2022. Mohamed is being represented by attorney-at-law Mark Thomas, while Prosecutor Tiffini Lyken is representing the State. It is alleged that on March 25, 2021, at Grant Friendship, Lower Pomeroon River, Mohammed attempted to

murder his 23-year-old reputed wife. He reportedly chopped his pregnant wife, several times before burning down their home. The pregnant woman was reportedly rescued by her neighbours after they noticed smoke coming from the couple’s home. It was reported that when the neighbours entered the home, they discovered the

badly wounded woman. She had suffered severe chop wounds to her head, hands and other parts of her body – her fingers were severed also. The woman had to be airdashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where she underwent surgery. The police apprehended Mohamed and he was charged with attempted murder.

England in West Indies: Jack Leach... From page 30 off-spinner into the leg side for a single but played on to his stumps. He had to drag himself from the field but he left with his team-mates on their feet, applauding from the balcony. Top order collapses as ball seams The two drawn Tests in this series have been played on flat batting tracks, England showing positive signs in two draws. Despite the Leach-

Mahmood stand, the fact England’s batters failed at the first sign of seam movement is of significant concern. In the first session Crawley hit a loose drive to extra cover for seven, Root nicked behind and Dan Lawrence was trapped in front by Jayden Seales - the first of three wickets for the impressive seamer. Trundling seam-bowling all-rounder Mayers took two wickets for no runs in his first five-over spell, justifying his

selection over spinner Veerasammy Permaul. England played and missed throughout the first two hours and, in truth, could easily have been further in the mire. After lunch the tourists slumped further when Ben Stokes miscued a pull back to bowler Alzarri Joseph for two, Jonny Bairstow nicked behind to wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva for a duck and opener Alex Lees, who had survived 96 balls for 31, fell in the same fashion to Kemar Roach.

All three wickets fell with the score on 53. When Foakes was bowled by Seales from a ball that nipped back, numbers two to seven in England’s batting line-up had all been dismissed for singlefigure scores for the first time since 1951. This series is being billed as the start of England’s “redball reset”. The period before Leach and Mahmood’s stand was all too familiar. They are fortunate it was not terminal for their hopes.

MMZ USA win 2 of 5 matches on... From page 28 and Raghubir continued his good form with 3-45 for MMZ who fell for 94 with Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie picking up three wickets each. Balgobin made 23, Chris Harry 16 and Matthew

Lutchena 13 but nobody else got to double figures. MMZ defeated MMZ West after reaching 147-5 in reply the 144 made by the home team. The consistent Hubbard made 61 while Reenie sup-

ported with an unbeaten 57 for the Americans. Levi Wiggins’ 64 and 25 from Adrian Johnson could not save their team from defeat as Raghubir, Ricky Kissoon and Ansaar Yasim captured two wickets each to

2022 Courts Caribbean Classic…

Golden Jaguars depart today for T&T Just two days remain before the Golden Jaguars spring into action against the Bajan Tridents at the 2022 Courts Caribbean Classic Football Tournament, slated for the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Trinidad and Tobago. After Guyana’s first match against Barbados on March 27, they will oppose the host nation’s side, Soca Warriors, on March 29 in the final match of the three-team, three-match friendly Tournament. T&T and Barbados contest the first match of the event on March 25. All matches kick off at 19:00 hrs. These matches are mainly in preparation for the 2022/2023 Concacaf Nations League (CNL) which will take place between FIFA Match Windows of June 2022 and March 2023. The official draw for the 2022/23 CNL, which will sub-divide Leagues A, B and C into groups, will take place on Monday, April 4, in Miami, FL. Guyana is in League B with 15 other nations inclusive of Barbados who were promoted from League C and T&T who were relegated from League A. The other nations in League B are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas (promoted), Belize, Bermuda (relegated), Cuba (relegated), Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guadeloupe (promoted), Guatemala (promoted), Haiti (relegated), Montserrat, Nicaragua and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Additionally, the 2022/ 23 CNL group stage will continue to serve as the qualifier for the Concacaf Gold Cup. More details on the exact qualification process for the 2023 Gold Cup will be announced by Concacaf prior to the start of the CNL group stage. Preceding Guyana’s departure for the Islands which is schedule for today, Head Coach of the Golden Jags, Jamaal Shabazz, shared his thoughts and expectations about the team’s participation in the friendly tournament. “The tournament is going to answer a lot of questions for us in terms of our preparation, it could not come at a better time and it also gives the players a chance to use what they’ve done in training,” he disclosed. Shabazz opined the motives for the inclusion of the older players, Neil Danns and Sam Cox, revolves around them guiding the newer talent in their transition phase. “They are at the eve of their careers but you know they

say that ‘before the flame outs it’s at its brightest’ and it’s just what the doctor ordered for some of these youngsters like Omari Glasgow and company, to be guided. Trinidad is by no means an easy opponent but we’ve had measured results against them and it gives us an opportunity to utilize those guys in the returning process. At the same time, you know if they show that they can hold up a place on the team, why not?” The head coach disclosed, “We have two experimental games. We are taking 24 players and we want as many players as possible to take the pitch. So when it comes to results in these matches, they got to be in the broader context of exposure and experimentation and I am not afraid of that. These guys are hungry for it, we have a good blend of young and older players and I must say that I am very impressed with the way the local based players have committed themselves.” The Soca Warriors enter the event as the tournamentfavourite based on past statistics but have not had International Men’s Football hosted at home since October 2019 when the pandemic was in full flow. However, T&T last defeated Guyana, 3 – 0, during a World Cup qualifier in Mexico in March of 2021 and had a favourable 2 – 0 result over Barbados in 2017 during a friendly at the Ato Boldon Stadium. Guyana last met Barbados in September 2018 during a CNL match and won, 3 – 0. T&T’s head coach is Angus Eve and Barbados’ head coach is Russell Latapy. Along with Shabazz, these three coaches all sat at the helm of the Soca Warriors. According to a post from the socawarriors.net, Eve said: “This is a perfect opportunity for us. This will be the first time I will actually have the majority of the team that I want to have and play the style of football that I actually want to play with them. Unfortunately we still could not get a couple guys because they had club commitments and we rather sacrifice them now and have them for the Nations League. Other than that I think we have gotten the core of the team that we want to work with and will try to express ourselves going forward in these two friendlies.” Meanwhile, Latapy comments stated: “I think it’s a

great opportunity for all three Caribbean nations to play against each other ahead of the Concacaf Nations League. It’s especially good

for our team Barbados to have the chance to come up against better ranked and more experienced opposition especially as they will be at

home. We will be using this as preparations for the Nations League and looking to continue developing the team.” The Bajans will be led

by assistant coach Fitzgerald Carter in the absence of head coach and former Trinidad and Tobago international star, Latapy.File: Injury

England in West Indies: Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood spare tourists’ top order BBC Sport - Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood were England’s unlikely saviours after the tourists’ top order collapsed on day one of the

decisive third Test against West Indies. Having been asked to bat first on a lively pitch, England crumbled to 114-9 before

Leach and Mahmood shared a crucial last-wicket partnership of 90 in Grenada. Mahmood was bowled in the final over of the day for

49, his highest score in professional cricket, but not before he and Leach had dragged England to 204. That represents an admirable recovery from England, who were facing being dismissed below 100 when they fell from 23-0 to 90-8 earlier in the day. Captain Joe Root was caught behind for a duck in the morning session while three wickets fell for no runs in an abject spell after lunch England unable to deal with the movement found by West Indies’ pace attack. But as the ball softened and pitch flattened out, Leach, who finished 41 not out, stoutly stopped the procession of wickets before he and Mahmood added valuable runs, including one fine Mahmood six. They ensured England’s bid to earn a first series win in the Caribbean since 2004, which would also halt their eight-match winless run in Tests, was not all but over on the opening day. Unlikely fightback rescues England Not since 1885 have numbers 10 and 11 top scored in a men’s Test. Their effort was remarkable. When Mahmood and Leach came together six of the top seven had made singlefigure scores while the highest partnership in the innings was the ninth-wicket stand of 24 between Leach and Chris Woakes, who made an important 25 before becoming the third batter to be clean bowled. Batting became much easier as the seam movement of earlier lessened, but that should not take away from Leach and Mahmood’s performance. At first it was all about survival, Leach digging in as he had famously against Australia during Ben Stokes’ Ashes miracle in 2019, but as the partnership grew so did the attacking intent. Leach drove the seamers down the ground and Mahmood, playing just his second Test, flicked seamer Kyle Mayers, whose day began by dismissing Root and Zak Crawley, over the midwicket rope. With four balls to go, Mahmood cracked Jermaine Blackwood down the ground to the boundary. That took him beyond his previous professional best score of 45. A ball later, with a maiden top-level fifty a run away, Mahmood tried to work the (Continued on page 27)

Cambridge Jaguars heading to CPSCL this season C

ambridge Jaguars Cricket team is heading to participate in the Canadian Premier Softball Cricket League (CPSCL) various tournaments this forthcoming season. For the past ten consecutive years, Jaguars had taken part in the Ontario RoundArm Softball Cricket Association (ORSCA) competition with great success. According to the president of Cambridge Jaguars and Canada-based Guyanese

Satishwar Persaud, he and his fellow teammates are eager to dominate proceedings at the CPSCL, but are anticipating stiff competition. Persaud also outlined that there is no specific reason to switch suddenly but strongly believes that featuring in a different league helps to boost the growth of softball cricket and generally the round-arm game. “Cambridge Jaguars prospered under the umbrella of the ORSCA over the last ten

years especially in the last five years with the management of myself and Mohamed Jinnah,” Persaud related. Reflecting on what would have transpired 2021; Cambridge Jaguars roared to the final in the twenty-over competition but were beaten by Sunshine. Persaud mentioned that was a demonstration of his team’s total commitment to play the game seriously and simultaneously enjoyably as well. He further related that

Satishwar Persaud ORSCA is a great organisation in which he feels has been built around astute and good leadership. “We want to thank the

ORSCA for hosting us over the years; this is an organisation which is being built around good leadership and I wish them continued

success,” Persaud commented. Adana Homes was a major sponsor and also pleased to be associated with the ORSCA, according to Persaud. Since the formation of the CPSCL in 2020, they have attracted multiple teams while running off, T20, T10 and 100ball competitions.
