Govt. mulls incentivising day, Jagdeo dispels rumors night and elderly care facilities of cancer diagnosis - to co-invest, remove taxes from income

he Government of Guyana (GoG) is proposing to incentivise day and night care centres for the children of working women as well as elderly care facilities, both of which they will be co-investing in with citizens.

The revelation was made by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo at his Thursday press conference held at party headquarters Freedom House on Robb Street.

He also disclosed that taxes will be removed from whatever income is earned from the centres once the fees proposed are favourable to the government.

Reminding that the government is aiming to have a lot more women trained and come into the work force. He said many of them face issues in terms of where to leave their children, hence these facilities will address this.

“It can't be too expensive and it can't be far from their homes.

So ,if the government were to build 15 daycare facilities across, say, Berbice or in Region Four, you have to travel and the whole

NDC, or like in my village, if I live… at Unity and the daycare facilities in Mahaica, every morning, you'd have to take the child four miles to go there and pick up the child,” the VP explained.

After much thought on how this initiative could be supported the government, it was highlighted even if they build 1000 of the said facilities, it would not be able to run them, therefore the model of incentivizing them was put forward. In turn this will be

creating business opportunities for persons living in villages, cities and towns.

“We will do prospectuses, and we're going to have people.

If you live in a village and you want to convert your bottom house into a daycare facility, we will, of course, it would have to be regulated. You have to have standards and everything else, but we can help you, even coinvest in fixing the facility, using the state (resources), we will remove any tax on income you earn from that facility,” Jagdeo

further explained. Having 1000 of the facilities is equivalent to 1000 persons becoming business owners, across the country. This will be provided for in the 2026 budget and it is in keeping with creating more opportunities for persons.

Elderly care will be following the same model as the childcare, “So we are going to build a huge facility, modern facility, to replace the Palms.

We've identified a place we're going to build it, so that the state will provide care like we're doing at Hugo Chavez.

We built (it) for people, homeless people, but we recognise that a lot of people may want to do elderly care in their provider service wherever they live, so they too will get the same benefits, co invest and tax benefits, and for those big places like there are some who want to do this as a big business, they have an institution, then they don't have to pay any corporate tax,” he said.

The VP added that he believes that this will be a very lucrative venture, as it will allow for better quality elderly care.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday dispelled rumors of being diagnosed with cancer. At his third People's Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) press conference since the party's re-election to office in September, he was asked if he was diagnosed with the deadly disease.

“No, I'm not ill. I have not been diagnosed with cancer. This, this rumor started from someone who died in APNU, was a APNU person,” Jagdeo said while explaining that the rumour was started by someone using the alias 'Egg ball' who worked at the Department of Public Information (DPI).

That person reportedly who died during the Covid-19 pandemic and since then A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) adopted it.

“But I'm not diagnosed with cancer. I'm not sick, and this is not the lip speaking here.

It's Bharrat Jagdeo because you have a hate industry surrounding me. APNU people some of them were not happy during the campaign. They said, Oh, I'm talking too much,” he said.

The Vice President said following publications by Kaieteur News that he is not knowledgeable about certain matters and should “shut up” he addressed at his press conferences, “I decided there are other important things to do, like working now on our promises [to the people].”

Given the significant reduction in press conferences hosted by Jagdeo, speculations swirled about his health. Thursday's press conference was the third since the PPP/C was re-elected to office.

Pres. Ali cash grant promise for Christmas was based on citizens “being good” – Jagdeo …defends not raising cash grant from $100k General Secretary of the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has come out to explain President Irfaan Ali's earlier promise of a “bright Christmas,” saying this was based on citizens behaving 'good' and was not a firm commitment to a 2025 Christmas cash grant.

Jagdeo made the comments during his press conference on Thursday at Freedom House, Georgetown, one day after President Ali's national address in which he announced that provisions will be made in the 2026 national budget for a $100,000 cash grant for every Guyanese citizen aged 18 years and older.

The announcement confirmed that there will be no cash grant payout for this Christmas, disappointing thousands of Guyanese who had anticipated the cash distribution based on the president's earlier remarks.

Holding up the PPP's 2025 manifesto, Jagdeo said the document clearly r e p r e s e n t s t h e administration's contract with the people.

He noted, “And by the way, this manifesto did not say in this manifesto here, it didn't say cash grant before Christmas…the president I recall at Eccles, you know the PM was saying next year

you'll get your cash grant and the president said if you are good people it may happen this year jocularly….”

Public expectations had been heightened by comments made by Ali during the election campaign earlier this year.

In an August 2025 campaign speech, the president hinted that Guyanese could receive another cash grant before year-end if the PPP was reelected at the September 1 General and Regional Elections. Under the first I r f a a n A l i - l e d administration, a $100,000 cash grant for citizens aged 18 and older was introduced in 2024 and continued into early 2025, benefitting more than 600,000 Guyanese.

Addressing questions about why the cash grant remains at $100,000, Jagdeo said the payout next year will amount to $63 billion, which

he noted exceeds the entire national revenue when he began his second term as president.

“That's the magnitude of it…this is our manifesto here, its speaks to cash grants here but it did say before Christmas and in fact how can you do it before Christmas, it took us five months the last time to get it implemented, you know how many people tried to rip off the system the last time…we don't even have a budgetary provision for it you have to go to parliament to get a budgetary provision…,” Jagdeo stated.

Responding to concerns from ordinary citizens that $100,000 is too little and should be increased, Jagdeo said, “Everybody would say, I might say it myself, it's too little if I want money too, everybody wants money….”

Man shot outside mother's shop …gunman on the run A 30-year-old mason is recovering in hospital after he was shot by a gunman on Tuesday night along the B Field Access Road, Sophia.

The injured man has been identified as Akeem Braithwaite, a resident of Lot 498 B Field, Sophia. The shooting occurred around 21:00 hrs. on December 16, 2025, while Braithwaite was sitting on the northern side of the access road, opposite his parents' home. Police investigations revealed that Braithwaite was waiting to assist his mother, Mary Braithwaite, in closing her shop located at the same address when he was approached by a man identified only as Emanuel, whose full particulars are still unknown.

The suspect reportedly approached from a westerly direction, armed with a handgun, and discharged three shots at Braithwaite before fleeing on foot in the same direction.

Braithwaite was struck by two bullets one to his upper left arm and another to the left side of his waist. Despite his injuries, he was immediately rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by his mother, where he remains hospitalised in stable condition. Police ranks visited and processed the scene later that night. Crime scene investigators recovered three .22 spent shells, which were marked, sealed and lodged as evidence. Several persons in the area were questioned, and private CCTV cameras were identified and are expected to be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police are currently searching for the suspect, and investigations into the motive for the attack are continuing. Anyone with information that may assist in locating the gunman is urged to contact the nearest police station.

“So where is the rest of the money gonna come from?” he asked. He

explained that the government's five-year plan will be financed through a mix of oil revenues, non-oil revenues and borrowing.

Reiterating that the cash grant will be available next year and in the future, Jagdeo said, “We are not only operating alone for Christmas 2025.”

During the campaign, Ali had said, “We will have a beautiful Christmas. Look at the smile on my face and know that you will have an enjoyable holiday.” Since then, many citizens had been

anticipating confirmation of a Christmas payout.

However, despite earlier assurances of a “bright and happy Christmas,” no cash grant for adult citizens will be paid during the holiday season.

Opposition parties, including We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), have publicly called on the PPP/C government to honour what they described as a promise to deliver a Christmas cash grant.

Fisherman feared drowned after knocked into Pomeroon River A 27-year-old fisherman is feared drowned after reportedly being knocked into the Pomeroon River by the wave of a speeding vessel on Thursday morning.

The missing man has been identified as Deodat Sarjoo, a resident of Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara.

The incident occurred around 11:15 hrs. in the vicinity of Manch Wharf, Charity River Dam, Essequibo Coast. Police said Sarjoo had been working for just over two weeks as a fisherman aboard a 42-foot fishing vessel captained by Akash Persaud, 40, of Hope Low Land, East Coast Demerara.

The boat, painted white, red and blue, was crewed by Sarjoo, Persaud and another f i s h e r m a n , Vi s h a l Heeraman, 28, of Hope Dutch Four, East Coast Demerara. The crew had been conducting drift seine fishing at the mouth of the Pomeroon River and returned to Charity on

Tuesday evening with their catch. After the fish were sold on Wednesday, Persaud reportedly paid both men and left Charity, instructing them to purchase ice while he returned home and later brought another worker.

According to police, on Thursday morning Sarjoo and Heeraman prepared to buy ice for the vessel.

Sarjoo, who was reportedly heavily intoxicated, was unable to go and instead gave Heeraman $3,000 to hire assistance to load the ice. He remained behind on the boat, saying he intended to cook the remaining anafoo fish stored in the ice box. Heeraman later told investigators that while he was waiting near the Charity River Dam with another worker, Sarjoo went into the boat's ice box, removed the fish and climbed out.

Moments later, as Sarjoo stood near the outer edge of the vessel facing the river, a speeding boat passed, generating a large wave. The

sudden swell reportedly caused Sarjoo to lose his balance and fall into the Pomeroon River. Efforts by Heeraman and the worker to locate Sarjoo immediately after the incident proved unsuccessful. Repeated searches of the surrounding area yielded no sign of the fisherman. The matter was reported to the Charity Police Station at approximately 11:25 hrs.

Police ranks led by Sergeant Ramsewak visited the scene shortly after, photographed the vessel and surrounding area, and conducted initial investigations. No CCTV cameras were found in the vicinity.

Statements were taken, and investigations are ongoing as search efforts continue. Authorities are urging boat operators to exercise caution and reduce speed near wharves and moored vessels, as dangerous wakes can pose serious risks to those working along the river.

Debt service pressures social services A short time ago, the question from the media was how well Guyana would do in servicing its US multibillion dollar in a falling oil price environment.

In 2022, Guyana's debt service bill was US$150.2M, which then increased to US$177.3M in 2023, and last stood at US$220M for 2024. In two short years, Guyana's debt service charge went up by 46 percent, a not-so-modest increase.

Vice President Jagdeo, Guyana's chief oil and gas policymaker had his answer ready and waiting. “So if we say 37 percent of the budget comes from oil money so clearly it means that the rest have to come from somewhere else, so we pointed out that about another 30 something percent comes from revenue that is non-oil revenue right, so the rest comes from loans every year to fund the projects”. What Jagdeo was saying was that the contributions of the non-oil sector to the national economy would be enough for Guyana to manage its debt service obligations. Debt service could be met but it would be tough, with less available for the people.

We believe that the nation's leading oil spokesman was up to his regular routine. He knew the weakness of his answer, but since he had nothing else to offer, presented it and hoped for the best. When oil prices are lower for an extended period, it isn't only the oil sector that feels the pain. The nonoil sector in Guyana would also experience pain. The nonoil sector and oil sector are not mutually exclusive. In other words, Guyana's nonoil sector is not housed in a silo, untouched by falling oil prices.

Developments that have negative impacts on oil transfer some of those impacts to nonoil businesses. When oil prices are riding high, the nonoil sector rides that wave. When oil prices start to slide, the nonoil sector starts its own slide, since they are so interlinked, which Jagdeo knows. Less business done by the nonoil sector usually means less tax collections, other contributions, from the businesses in that sector.

When we factoring in Jagdeo's “30 something percent comes from revenue that is non-oil revenue” this adds up to something significant relative to taxes paid. Guyana's top oilman knows this, but persists with the fantasy that non-oil sector contributions to the economy would help this country to weather debt servicing challenges.

For one, the increase in pressure from debt service would squeeze social services, putting further strain on citizens struggling to manage with higher prices. Those looking to the government for support would end up disappointed. Should oil prices head south, the people already having it hard are in for more pain. One indication is how much those having a tough time were depending on a cash grant. With the president's announcement about one coming early next year, and not now, the expectant is forced to lick their wounds, and wait it out.

Returning to Jagdeo, he noted that the PPPC Government's revenue model is based on oil prices remaining at current levels. “Our future revenue, if we forecast based on oil production even for the approved projects and Whiptail which will be approved, if we only factor in production at those levels, at say current oil prices at the volume that we expect to produce from those projects, the revenue for the state in the outer years, that is maybe by 2028- 2030 we could be (receiving) US$5.7 to 6B.” Absorbing what Jagdeo said, we have this to say: annual debt servicing becomes challenging, when oil prices fall. Guyana could anticipate increased daily production volumes, but when oil falls, other countries usually have inventory on their hands. Most, if not all, of the oil producing countries are then in a fight to maintain their revenue levels from oil, through increased production. With so much more oil supplied to the market, Jagdeo knows what that could mean for still lower oil prices. The reality is when things are bright with oil, good things happen for oil producing countries. Recklessly taking on more debt is unhealthy. When oil prices go the other way, the assumptions and models start to crack in different places. Rosy debt servicing predictions fall apart, the people feel more pain.

Reminiscing about Guyanese Deportations from USA then and now Dear Editor, Reference is drawn to your news report about eight violent Guyanese being arrested in USA and set for deportation (KN Dec 15).

Deportations today are quite different from fifty years ago.

Last week deportees have been on a wanted list for various serious crimes.

Last June, seven Guyanese criminals were also deported returning to Guyana on a special plane (KN Jun 12).

Between then and now, hundreds of illegal Guyanese were deported, some opting for selfdeportation hoping they will be allowed to return to USA legally as promised by the Trump Administration. The administration has been giving US$1000 to any illegal to self-deport.

The Guyana government has accepted the deportees, some of whom were convicted of various serious crimes. In earlier period, illegals were not encouraged or paid to self deport. Many among those deported in earlier periods were able to make it back to USA and with regularized status.

Some Guyanese ratted on illegals for a fee.

There are over twelve millions illegals, including thousands of Guyanese, in USA. Some are in process for green cards. The administration has cracked down on undocumented or illegals, deporting hundreds of thousands since President Trump was sworn in last January. Anti-American foreign students are also being rounded up for deportation. There are hundreds of Guyanese foreign students; none are known to engage in antiAmerican activities. There have been immigration ICE raids in various immigrant communities including where Guyanese are settled in New York, New Jersey, and Florida at their homes, places of business, and where they tend to shop and socialise. Several Guyanese were picked up and deported or awaiting deportation in holding centers or waiting to see judges. Guyanese immigrant advocates have been advising not to open doors or allow ICE agents into their properties without a warrant from a judge. They

are also advised not resist arrest.

In recent months, ICE raided job sites and locations where immigrants tend to gather for daily work. It is not known how many Guyanese were picked up, but raids are ongoing including in Richmond Hill.

Places of worship and senior centers have been spared.

Rum shops and restaurants have also not been targeted.

B u t G u y a n e s e , undocumented and those with status, are fearful of going out, afraid of getting caught up in unannounced raids and sent to detention centers for deportation.

Illegals are careful where they seek employment. Even those in private construction or cottage industries or roti shops are fearful of going to work.

The ICE raids are reminiscent of similar raids during the 1970s and 1980s with a major difference.

Now, ICE has some clues of where illegals reside including addresses of immigrants and wanted illegal criminals and have carried out raids accordingly to arrest them. They have

raided job and construction sites known to hire immigrants. Tenements in minority neighborhoods where illegals resided were also raided. In contrast, during the 1970s and 1980s, in addition to regular job and residential raid in minority communities, agents offered a fee per head for reports and arrests of illegals.

Incentivized by the fees, a few opportunistic Guyanese ratted on their illegal families, friends, former neighbors in Guyana collecting bounties. Many undocumented Guyanese were picked up as a result of (ratting) reports from fellow Guyanese. Some of us provided assistance to illegal Guyanese including regularizing their status.

Chuck Mohan consistently rallied for immigrants.

The Guyanese 'rats' were not dissimilar from the 'arkatiyas' who sold out their brethren in India for indenture and those slave catchers in Africa who sold fellow Africans into slavery.

THAG is particularly pleased with the

implementation of a flat tax of two million dollars on double-cab pick-ups under 2000cc, and three million dollars on double-cab pickups between 2000cc and 2500cc.

This measure will significantly improve access to these essential vehicles for tourism businesses, especially those operating in Guyana's hinterland regions, where reliable transportation is critical to daily operations.

The Association also

strongly welcomes the President's declaration that corporate taxes will be removed across the agriculture and agroprocessing value chain.

Place your trust not in political promises, but in God Dear Editor, The conduct of President Irfaan Ali and his administration at recent state-related engagements raises serious concerns about respect for democratic institutions and inclusive governance. Of particular note was the decision to invite members of the diplomatic community, senior public servants, members of the disciplined services, and other stakeholders, while excluding elected Members of Parliament. Such an omission demonstrates a troubling disregard for the constitutional role of the legislature and undermines the principles of representative democracy, accountability, and political inclusion that are

foundational to Guyana's system of governance.

As Guyanese reflect on President Irfaan Ali's recent public statements, particularly those made during the election campaign promising citizens a “beautiful Christmas,” it is imperative to critically examine the substance behind such declarations, especially when placed alongside the Government's five-year development agenda for 2026–2030 and the lived realities of ordinary people.

President Ali's two-anda-half-hour address on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, was largely centered on what the Government claims to have accomplished between 2020 and 2025.

Rather than outlining a clear,

people-centered vision for the next five years, the address echoed the tone and content of a budget presentation, more akin to Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh's 2026 Budget speech, heavy on statistics, self-congratulation, and political marketing, but noticeably light on honest reflection and futuref o c u s e d p o l i c y commitments.

One of the most striking elements of the speech was the President's treatment of housing. He spoke boastfully about the number of house lots distributed under his administration.

Yet, the reality on the ground tells a very different story.

Poor and vulnerable Guyanese continue to face significant barriers to

accessing housing, while families, associates, and close affiliates of Ministers are reportedly allocated acres and large parcels of land, often to construct mansions and apartment complexes. This inequitable distribution of a national asset raises serious concerns about fairness, transparency, and social justice in housing policy.

The broader social context makes these disparities even more troubling. According to an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) report, approximately 58 percent of Guyanese are living in poverty. This stark statistic reflects a structural failure to translate unprecedented oil wealth into inclusive development.

Regional cooperation must be matched with local policies that address crime prevention Dear Editor, As a public analyst, I am deeply disheartened by the growing reports of Guyanese nationals being involved in criminal activity both at home and abroad.

Equally troubling is the reality that Guyanese are increasingly appearing as both perpetrators and victims of crime. This trend raises serious concerns about social stability, public safety, and the long-term consequences for our national reputation.

Recent events have intensified public anxiety.

The terrorist-style attack at a local gas station in Georgetown sparked nationwide outrage and fear.

Law enforcement reports indicated the involvement of both Guyanese and Ve n e z u e l a n n a t i o n a l s ,

underscoring the crossborder dimensions of modern crime and the increasing pressures on Guyana's security framework.

International assessments further highlight the seriousness of the issue. The United States Department of Homeland Security has identified Guyanese among groups involved in serious criminal activity within its immigration system. In 2025, the United Kingdom added Guyana to its “deport now, appeal later” scheme, fast-tracking the removal of foreign nationals convicted of crimes. Meanwhile, the Canada Border Services Agency reported a significant cocaine seizure earlier this year involving Guyanese connections

Beyond violent crime, human exploitation remains a critical concern.

The United States Department of State has reported that human traffickers exploit both domestic and foreign victims within Guyana, while Guyanese nationals are also trafficked abroad.

Victims are forced into labor in sectors such as mining, a g r i c u l t u r e , f o r e s t r y, domestic service, and small retail operations, revealing deep vulnerabilities within the social and economic system.

At the regional level, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting social cohesion, inclusive governance, and sustainable peace.

However, these goals

require strong national action. Regional cooperation must be matched with local policies that address crime prevention, social i n e q u a l i t y, y o u t h development, and border management While these incidents do not define Guyana or its people, they undeniably harm the country's international standing and strain public confidence.

Instead of disciplining us, the Professors offered sympathy, solidarity, and encouragement to carry on with the struggle, and they advised that we be careful of activities and traitors of our goal.

When we were students at CIty College, a few members of our Indo Club reported us to the administration for spending club funds on political activities instead of social parties; we were reprimanded.

They wanted the money for parties while spent it on political activities relating to Guyana.

We were determined to restore democratic governance in Guyana and remained unrelenting in our struggle for free and fair elections.

The arkatiyas have jobs today because the country is liberated thanks to the contributions of our struggle.

Guyanese who committed crimes in USA should be deported.

Guyanese of all status, undocumented, legal, citizens, students, visitors. etc. are advised not to run foul of the laws.

Once arrested, they could be subjected to immigration court and candidates for deportation.

Instead of confronting this reality, the Government has increasingly ridiculed or dismissed citizens who criticize its performance, branding legitimate concerns as ungrateful or politically motivated, rather than engaging in constructive dialogue or policy reform.

Compounding this disappointment is the Government's failure to account for its own stated commitments. Leading up to the General and Regional Elections (GRE) 2025, President Ali declared that the Government had a “broad, strategic plan to combat poverty and enhance citizens' standard of living through specific social programmes, tax incentives, and key investments in infrastructure” (Department of Public Information, July 27, 2025). Notably absent from his two-and-a-halfhour address, however, was any substantive discussion of this strategy, its outcomes, shortcomings, or future direction. This omission renders the speech less a genuine national address and more a continuation of political propaganda.

Beyond rhetoric, the material conditions of life for many Guyanese continue to deteriorate. Public servants received salary increases in July 2025, just months before the elections.

While wage adjustments are necessary, their timing raises legitimate concerns that they were designed more to secure political loyalty than to correct longstanding inequities within the public service.

At the same time, the cost of living continues to rise exponentially. In the absence of effective price control measures, households struggle with escalating food, transportation, and utility costs. Many citizens anticipated cash grants or targeted relief to cushion these pressures during the Christmas season. These expectations were largely unmet, leaving families to navigate hardship during what should be a time of peace and togetherness.

The economic consequences are evident across Georgetown and beyond. Businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, invested heavily in goods, anticipating increased consumer spending and possible government incentives. Instead, vendors and shop owners report low customer turnout, weak cash circulation, and declining sales. Christmas, for many, has not been beautiful; it has been burdensome.

Yet, significant public funds have been allocated to C h r i s t m a s Vi l l a g e , decorative lighting along Main Street, multiple Christmas trees, and elaborate displays at State House. While aesthetics have their place, such spending appears misplaced when many citizens cannot afford basic necessities.

These funds could have been redirected toward vouchers, bonuses, or targeted assistance for struggling households, offering dignity and relief rather than spectacle.

Lip-service on good governance Dear Editor, Without reference or deference to the text of the President`s recent Address to the Nation, I wish to comment on what that address signaled in relation to democracy and governance, in Guyana, under the administration of the Peoples Progressive Party and Ali`s presidency.

It has been the practice of previous Presidents/Heads of State, including President Ali, to address the nation, at the commencement of the term of a newly elected administration, using a sitting of Parliament as the platform.

This practice is also universal.

The significance of such

an address is to layout to the nation the government`s intended programme for the period of its mandate.

Parliament is deemed to be the suitable forum for such an address since it has the constitutional responsibility to hammer-out the policy, legislative, and programmatic frameworks of the government.

Place your trust not in political...

When governance prioritises optics over people, it undermines both moral and d e v e l o p m e n t a l responsibility.

It is a sobering moment for Guyana as citizens observe how oil revenues are managed, while a small segment of society, perhaps no more than ten percent, appears to benefit disproportionately from lucrative contracts, as allegations of corruption continue to erode trust within the public service and the wider society. appeal to my fellow Guyanese: place your trust not in political promises, but in God. When human systems fail and leaders disappoint, Jesus never fails.

Spend wisely, live prudently, and hold fast to faith and discernment during these difficult times.

That President Ali has opted to depart from that convention and in so doing excluded parliamentarians from those whose presence was acknowledged, if at all they were invited, suggests the diminution of the parliament, notwithstanding its constitutional role.

As if this is not an oversight or an ill-advised course of action, it should be noted that it represents an established trend of President Ali to ignore and/or by-pass the elected representatives of the

people, while touting inclusion at the same time.

His past treatment of the Leader of the Opposition and his declaration at a community meeting in Mocha-Arcadia that there was no need for him to speak to local representatives are but examples of his disrespectful, brazen, autocratic and undemocratic disposition and that of other government officials.

It is further exemplified by the matter in which the first sitting of parliament was unduly delayed; the

failure, after approximately eight weeks, to have another sitting; the apparent refusal to conduct the election of the Leader of the Opposition; and the convening of an alternate public forum to deliver the conventional Presidential Address.

There seems to be lipservice to good-governance and democracy but blatant omissions of the practice, while the noose of compliance, by the citizenry, is increasingly tightened.

Upholding Parliamentary Traditions and Democratic Inclusion Dear Editor I write with sincere concern about recent developments surrounding the presentation of President Irfaan Ali's five-year development plan.

Tr a d i t i o n a l l y, s u c h important national addresses are delivered in Parliament, w h e r e e l e c t e d representatives from both Government and Opposition come together to speak on behalf of the people. Moving away from this practice understandably causes unease among citizens who value our democratic traditions.

Parliament is more than a formal institution; it is the heart of our democracy. It is

where ideas are tested, differing views are respected, and national decisions are strengthened through debate and accountability. When a major policy address is delivered outside of this forum, the opportunity for inclusive engagement is inevitably reduced. These concerns are further deepened by the continued absence of a duly sworn Leader of the Opposition.

The Speaker of the National Assembly is yet to convene a sitting of Parliament to complete the process of electing and swearing in the Opposition Leader. This delay leaves a significant portion of the electorate

w i t h o u t f o r m a l representation at a critical moment in our national discourse.

Guyana is not a one-party state. Our democracy depends on balance, dialogue, and respect for constitutional processes.

National development plans deserve to be presented in a setting that reflects these values and allows all elected voices to be heard. At this pivotal point in our country's development, it is my hope that our leaders will reaffirm their commitment to inclusion, transparency, and democratic respect for the benefit of all Guyanese.

Guyana fuels Massy's strong 2025 performance ...emerges as key growth market in retail operations

u y a n a ' s expanding consumer market and rising economic momentum played a pivotal role in Massy Holdings Ltd.'s strong financial performance for the year ended 2025, as the regional conglomerate recorded higher revenues, profits and cash generation despite continued global market volatility.

Massy Group said it closed the 2025 financial year on what it described as a “strong footing,” underpinned by disciplined

execution and the resilience of its diversified portfolios across the Caribbean and mainland markets, including Guyana. Third-party revenue rose 3 per cent to TT$15.8 billion (US$2.3 billion), while Profit Before Ta x f r o m c o n t i n u i n g operations increased 4 per cent to TT$1.1 billion (US$169.3 million).

P r o f i t A f t e r Ta x increased 14% to TT$766.3 million (US$113.7 million), supported by improved efficiency and portfolio discipline. Net Cash Generated from Operating

Activities surged 24% to TT$1.67 billion (US$247.7 million). This figure represents the actual cash the businesses bring in from its day-to-day operationsmoney that can be used to invest, reduce debt, and return value to shareholders.

Strong operating cash flow is one of the clearest indicators of a healthy, stable business, the company said.

The debt-to-equity ratio improved to 34% excluding leases, reinforcing financial flexibility. This shows how much of the company is financed by borrowing

versus by shareholders. A lower number means the company is using debt responsibly and is in a stronger position to handle economic shocks and invest in new growth opportunities.

Across its portfolios, Massy delivered resilient performances.

Integrated Retail Portfolio (IRP) remained the largest contributor, with revenue up 4% to TT$9.9 billion, driven by strong growth in Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana, and the OECS. Gas Products Portfolio

Bandit posing as ID applicant, holds GECOM workers at gunpoint

mployees of the G u y a n a Elections Commission (GECOM) were robbed at gunpoint on Thursday morning after a man posing as a National Identification card applicant stormed their office on M a n d e l a Av e n u e , Georgetown.

The victims have been identified as Lovern Rawlings, 50, a janitor of Lot 8 Charles Street, Charlestown, and Maxine Barrow, 57, a scrutineer of Lot 117 Cowan Street, Kingston.

The robbery occurred

ar o u n d 11 :5 6 h r s o n December 18, 2025, at a GECOM outlet located at Lots 523–524 Mandela Avenue. Police investigations revealed that the suspect, described as an identifiable male entered the upper flat of the two-storey concrete building through the northern main access door.

At the time, Rawlings, Barrow and other staff members were seated inside the office.

The suspect reportedly requested to be registered for a National Identification card but was informed that

registration would resume next year. He then pulled a black handgun from his waistband, pointed it at the victims and demanded their valuables.

Fearing for their lives, Rawlings handed over a Samsung A7 cellular phone valued at $30,000, along with a 10-pennyweight gold chain valued at approximately $200,000.

Barrow was also relieved of a gold chain, the value of which is yet to be determined.

After committing the robbery, the gunman exited the building and escaped in

an unknown direction.

Police ranks visited and processed the scene at about 13:15 hrs. Several persons were questioned, and investigators are canvassing the area for private CCTV footage.

In addition, cameras linked to the command centre are being reviewed as efforts intensify to identify and locate the suspect.

Statements have been taken from the victims, and investigations are ongoing.

Anyone with information that may assist police is urged to contact the nearest police station.

(GPP) saw revenue decline 6% to TT$2.03 billion due to softer demand but still delivered an 8% rise in Profit Before Tax to TT$385 million, underscoring tight cost discipline.

Massy's share price appreciated 5% over the financial year, resulting in a total shareholder return of

12.18%. Total shareholder return combines share price growth and dividends received, showing the full benefit to investors over the financial year. FY2025 also marked a leadership transition. James McLetchie assumed the role of Group President and CEO on 1 October 2025, succeeding David Affonso, whose three decades of leadership helped shape Massy's success. The Board also welcomed Ivette Zuniga as CFO and Ryan Latchu as CEO of the Group's Motors & Machines Portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to strong governance and talent development.

Be your own Santa I

t is a truth universally acknowledged that a person without access to a Christmas b onus must be in want of a cash grant. Or so the prevailing wisdom seems to suggest.

The recent disgruntled murmurs regarding the nonpayment of said cash grant, has set me pondering. And I must confess, the mental landscape it revealed was more bewildering than attempting to explain footballs offside rule.

Persons tuned into to the radio and television yesterday waiting, hoping that the government would have a rethink and announce the cash grant for Christmas.

It did not dawn on the desperate hopefuls that even if there was such an intention, logistically it would be impossible for such a payment to reach their pockets in time for Christmas Day. In their quiet

desperation, they had failed to consider that no bureaucratic sleigh, h o w e v e r w e l l intentioned, could have navigated the red-tape blizzard to deliver such a grant by the 25th of December.

This collective suspension of disbelief, h o w e v e r, w o u l d h a v e been wholly unnecessary had they but glanced over their shoulders into the not-so-distant past.

There was a time in Guyana, I am reliably informed, when the Treasury was in a state resembling a sucked orange.

And yet Christmas arrived with its customary punctuality. Gifts were exchanged. Cakes were baked. Rum was plenty.

Jollification was all around.

The whole affair was managed without the slightest whisper of a government subvention for festive merriment.

One simply made do, muddled through, and discovered that the primary

ingredient for a “beautiful” Christmas was not legal tender, but a stout heart and a willingness to laugh when the liquor and food flowed.

T h e p r e s e n t disappointment, I gather, stems from a semantic mirage. A statement was made about a beautiful Christmas. The populace heard this statement and somehow, saw etched in letters of fire, the promise of a cash grant. For some it appeared in denominations of $100,000 and for others as $200,000 dont ask me what was responsible for the disparity.

But it is a tragic tale, really: high hopes dashed against the rocky shore of fiscal reality.

A lesson, perhaps, that one should never trust a politician to play Santa.

But here is the kicker that turns the whole affair from tragedy to farce.

Since the tail-end of November, the citizenry has been shopping with

nation from the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on Wednesday evening. Currently, over 15,000 Guyanese are employed under the government’s National P a t h w a y Wo r k e r s Programme. Meanwhile, more than 2500 Amerindians are employed as CSOs under the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs. Apart

from an increase, these individuals will also benefit from a $100,000 National Cash Grant and a $100,000 education grant, with allocations to be made in the 2026 National Budget.

These new announcements by the president are just one aspect of the government’s broader social development strategy, as spelt out in its 2025 Manifesto. (DPI)

Rahim seh, “Yuh remember dat jewellery shop we did go inside bout ten years ago, an’ yuh fall in love wid dat diamond necklace? At de time, I could not afford it, but I tell yuh I go get it one day.”

Talk half. Leff half.

the focused abandon.

Money is sloshing about the economy like champagne. And when the private sector, those heartless plutocrats, start disgorging their legendary Christmas bonuses, the spending will reach a pitch. The money, dear reader, is demonstrably there. It is simply residing in pockets other than those of the ordinary man and public servants.

And who, pray, is the architect of this Yuletide liquidity crisis? One must view the situation with a clear, if sympathetic, eye.

Tr a d i t i o n a l l y, t h e government, in a fit of seasonal benevolence, has timed the payment of a retroactive salary increase for December. A splendid arrangement, synchronising cash inflow with festive outflow.

This year, however, in what can only be described as a political gambit, the authorities paid this retroactive lump sum in July. July! The

average public servant, confronted with this early windfall, did what any right-thinking person would do: he treated it as, well, a windfall. It has doubtless been spent on sensible thing. The consequence is that the December pay packet now arrives as naked of extra cheer.

If the celebration of Christmas is wholly contingent upon a lastminute monetary injection from the State, then the problem lies not in the Treasurys coffers, but in ones own domestic budget.

The festive season is not a surprise attack. It is a fixed point in the calendar, as predictable as the turning of the Earth.

One must, in the w o r d s o f t h e philosophers, save up for a rainy day, or in this case, the end of year spending spree.

In short, the entire brouhaha is a masterpiece of self-inflicted irony. To

clamour for a cash grant to fund ones gaiety is to admit a rather fundamental failure in household strategy.

It suggests that ones finances are in a state of disarray. And that one has deluded oneself into believing that the government somehow has an obligation to fatten your pockets for Christmas.

The true spirit of Christmas, one feels, should be proof against such expectations.

After all, a government cash grant may buy a larger microwave or a larger carpet but it cannot purchase a merrier heart. And if it can, then, something is radically wrong.

Read of an explosion or a mass shooting and there's one early interpretation that encircles then takes over the mind. Terrorism. Sound the

word terrorism and the first fear that stalks the thinking of many is of people who hail from the Middle East, or farther east. And to nudge

away nuance, I nail this on the head.

Muslims.

Islamophobia. Xenophobia.

Then along came Hannukah celebrations in Bondi Beach,

Australia, and there is an ordeal in two parts - the barbaric and the utterly extraordinary.

Amid the carnage, the Kaddish for the dead, there must be that other piercing, soaring chant. One that celebrates a man who became a global hero, a household name, in an instant. His name is Ahmed al Ahmed. With a name like that, he just must be Muslim.

Are all Muslims still seen as terrorists? Still concluded to be barbarous beasts?

Takeaway a man's land first.

Then his means of living.

Next, his liberty. Also, his family. Last his dignity.

Then what has he got left, other than to be condemned to the ranks of a loser all the rest of his days? How does a man, any man, not be prone to radicalization?

Some may pounce and declare this to be a justification for mass slaughter, the killing of innocents. Sometimes it is better for some to keep their mouths closed and be thought of as a damn fool, than to open it and prove that he or she is an incomparably bigger imbecile. I have learned belatedly to ignore the ignorant in the environment.

Ahmed al Ahmed did what 90%, maybe as much as 95% of men would not dream of doing, then actually stepping forward and entering an uncontrolled danger zone.

Anyone who fancies his chances with a gunman on the prowl looking for targets, and do so with his bare hands is a class all of his own.

When Ahmed al Ahmed took his life into his hands

and launched himself at that machinegun maniac, he entered a gladiatorial category that welcomes only a few. The central thrust of this writing is that Ahmed al Ahmed is a Muslim and he risked his life to save others, most likely total strangers.

From the mayhem of a man on the loose with a loaded machinegun, and who had already indicated his willingness to mow down whoever stood in his way.

He may be a rarity, but I will take those gratefully whenever there is the good fortune to encounter, even from across a vast distance.

The stereotype directed against his tribe, his environment, his religion may be maintained, his actions shrugged off. What is one?

What is so exceptional in only one? To pigeonhole, then spread a blanket curse, stain, stigma, on a whole people, an entire belief system, due to the heinous actions of a more than a large handful, constitutes an inhumanity of a different type. So much easier to deliver.

When it is convenient and self-satisfying, neatly fits all existing bigotries and prejudices, to divide the world into good people (those on my side) and bad people (those that raise hackles and the worst suspicions), then I contend that that is a barbarism, by any definition. As an aside, I was at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, many lifetimes ago.

And right on the heels of that, the anthrax scare, used the trains where that started,

people died. And at the London Subway bombing, but at a distance on July 7,2005. I saw, heard, felt, and tasted fear, rage, and hate. With none of that unholy trinity wholly unjustified.

I am still around, through grace, despite having my own experiences with homegrown terrorists right here in Guyana. They also have the power to command armies of fanatics; money to burn; and enough hate in them to seek to snuff out those who don't see the world in quiet the same way that they do.

To my knowledge, most of the Guyanese bred terrorists are not Muslims. Remember most are not, but there are significant exceptions.

They have grown seasoned and skilled in the trade of the assassin. The weak and fearful of Guyana need an Ahmed al Ahmed to standup and lay it all on the line, as was done in Australia.

Wouldn't that be something?

Non-religious, non-partisan, non-sectarian. Just human.

A human being showing the world what it is to be decent and honorable, and unprecedentedly illuminating. May the scales of self-imposed blindness flake off piece by piece, then fall away totally. When people standup, one man speaks, the world is better for it.

Venezuela authorizes two unsanctioned loaded oil supertankers to depart, sources say (Reuters) - Venezuela on Thursday authorized two very large crude carriers (VLCC) to set sail for China, according to two sources familiar with Venezuela's oil export operations.

They would be only the second and third supertankers to depart the country since the U.S. seized a ship carrying Venezuelan oil last week.

The U.S. has said it would not allow vessels under sanction to leave Venezuelan waters. The departing tankers are not on its current sanctions list.

Each is carrying around 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan Merey heavy crude, according to internal documents from state company PDVSA. The ships plan to navigate with their

tracking transponders switched off from Venezuela's main oil port of Jose, one of the sources said.

Many vessels that provide false location data to disguise their real position while transporting Iranian, Russian or Venezuelan oil are not under U.S. sanctions. However, they are part of the so-called "shadow fleet" of ships that are typically unregulated by Western insurers and maritime service providers.

The shadow fleet is considered exposed to possible punitive measures from the U.S., shipping analysts have said.

In the case of Venezuela, Washington has said it is only targeting vessels under U.S. sanctions as part of a "blockade" announced

by President Donald Trump this week.

Essequibo man found guilty of attempted child rape A

4 6 - y e a r- o l d man was found guilty last Friday of the attempted rape of a child under the age of 16, following a trial at the Demerara High Court.

Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh delivered the verdict and ordered that sentencing be deferred to January 21, 2026.

The accused, Ganesh Lewis of St. Lawrence, East Bank Essequibo, was originally charged with two offences; attempted rape and rape of a child under the age of 16 contrary to Section 10(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03, and in contravention of Section 36(a) of the Act. The crime was allegedly committed in January 2022.

However, Lewis pleaded not guilty to both charges when the trial commenced

on December 12 before Justice Singh. The charges were initially read to him by Magistrate Zamina SeepaulAlly.

In presenting its case, the prosecution told the court that the victim was under five years old at the time, while Lewis was 43.

Prosecutors described Lewis as a close family friend who frequently visited and spent time with the child's family. According to the prosecution, on the day of the incident Lewis took the child into a shed located near a relative's barbershop.

A community resident testified that upon going to the barbershop and finding it closed, they noticed, “movement in the shed next to the barbershop and went and look and saw the accused with his pants

down, along with the pants of the victim down, while standing behind the accused and playing with his penis and the victim's butt,” the prosecutors stated.

The witness shouted at Lewis and asked what he was doing. Lewis heard the witness and left with the child.

The incident was later reported to the child's family, who subsequently made a report to the police.

Lewis was arrested on August 4, 2022, but denied the allegations.

During his defence, Lewis maintained his innocence, telling the court that he had been asleep when the child repeatedly knocked on the door of the room where he was resting.

“He said the victim “come” and told (the victim) he was sleeping,”

Solar power, ferry and a bridge - Pres Ali unveils major development push for Leguan Residents of Leguan Island, Region Three (Essequibo Islands–West Demerara), are poised to benefit from a wave of transformative development projects as the government prepares to present the first budget of its second term.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali gave the assurance during a community engagement at the Leguan Secondary School on Thursday, part of a two-day government outreach in the region.

Following the installation of the 0.60megawatt (MW) gridforming solar farm in Leguan, President Ali said residents and the business community can expect a reduction in their electricity bills. He added that engineers are currently examining options to maximise the system's capacity. “You will see an announcement that will bring down your cost of electricity on this island significantly because of the investment [we] have made in the solar energy,” he told the audience.

Leguan–Wakenaam link Today, President Ali will commission additional ferry services, facilitating more frequent movement of residents, farmers and

equipment between Leguan and surrounding communities. Engineers are also conducting final assessments for the longproposed bridge linking Leguan and Wakenaam, a project the president said will bring a dream to reality.

“We have been investing to make your lives better,” the president reminded residents, while acknowledging that more needs to be done to improve their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, rice farmers are set to benefit from a major drainage and water storage project covering approximately 13,000 acres on the eastern side of the island. The project will include 4.3 kilometres of new drainage canals, multiple intakes and intermediate structures, along with additional heavyduty machinery.

Construction is expected to begin after Budget 2026 is tabled, the president said. A mini-excavator will be delivered to the island to assist with interlocking drains.

A hub for tourism “ Yo u r i s l a n d w i l l become a hub for tourism, which means that you will have to produce more food and more jobs will be created here right on this

island,” the president revealed, noting that investors have shown tremendous interest in developing the tourism potential of the island.

Health services will also be strengthened, as the government has acquired Xray units for the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

Additionally, facilities for maternal, dental, and laboratory services will be developed.

Joining President Ali were the Minister of Public Service, Government E ff i c i e n c y a n d Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Vickash Ramkisson and Regional Chairman, Sheik Mohamed Inshan Ayube, among other officials.

To ensure residents capitalise on the many opportunities, Minister Ally said his ministry will revisit the island to guide its youth on how to sign up for programmes under the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) and Coursera initiatives. The president also took the time to listen to residents' concerns, which ranged from traffic hazards and agricultural issues to security and other community concerns. (DPI)

Lewis told the court that when he arrived, he saw the child standing on a stool and attempted to lift the child down for safety reasons.

“He told (the victim) to get off the stool, because (the victim's) family is not an easy task of people and they'll say (the victim) came by him and knock (themself). He said he then held (the victim) by (the child's) two sides to lift (the

child) off the stool and same time the resident came and saw him and carried false information about him,” the document said.

However, the prosecution challenged this account, arguing that it would have been “impossible” for Lewis to hear any disturbance, given that the barbershop was closed at the time and was the only structure adjacent the area where the accused was found.

Prosecutors further contended that Lewis's residence was not close enough to the barbershop for him to have heard any

noise, as he claimed.

After reviewing the evidence, Justice Singh found Lewis not guilty on the charge of rape but unanimously guilty on the a l t e r n a t i v e c h a rg e o f attempted rape of a child under 16.

The matter was adjourned to January 2026 for sentencing.

The state was represented by attorney Ronald Bostwick, while the prosecution team included State Counsel Simran Gajraj, State Counsel Christopher Belfield, and State Counsel Geneva Wills.

U.S. announces $11bn weapons sale to Taiwan BBC - The Trump administration has announced a huge arms sale w o r t h a r o u n d $ 11 b n (£8.2bn) to Taiwan, which includes advanced rocket launchers, self-propelled howitzers and a variety of missiles.

This package, which still needs to be approved by the US Congress, will be the second arms sale to Taiwan s i n c e D o n a l d Tr u m p returned to the White House in January.

China, which sees selfgoverned Taiwan as a breakaway province, condemned the move, saying it "severely undermines China's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity".

Ta i w a n ' s d e f e n c e ministry thanked the US and said the deal would help the island in "rapidly building robust deterrence capabilities".

The US has formal ties with Beijing rather than Taiwan, and has walked a tight diplomatic rope for decades. But it remains a powerful ally of Taiwan's and the island's biggest arms supplier.

The latest arms sale has angered Beijing, which has in recent years ramped up pressure over Taiwan with military drills and regular incursions into its waters and airspace.

In his first term, Trump had approved arms sales to Taiwan totalling $18.3bn the largest package was worth $8bn.

The US State

Department said this deal s e r v e s Wa s h i n g t o n ' s interests "by supporting [Taipei's] continuing efforts to modernise its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability".

China has long vowed to "reunify" with Taiwan and has not ruled out the use of force to take it.

It is a threat that Taiwan is increasingly taking seriously. It plans to boost defence spending to more than 3% of its gross domestic product next year and up to 5% by 2030.

In October, President Lai Ching-te announced the building of a dome-like air defence system to guard against "hostile threats", without mentioning China by name.

China has grown increasingly assertive in the region, often rattling neighbours with unusual moves - in June, Japan protested following an unprecedented naval drill

by Chinese aircraft carriers in the Pacific.

More recently the two countries have been sparring over the Japanese prime minister's suggestion that Japan could deploy its own self-defence force if China attacks Taiwan.

Persad-Bissessar was speaking with members of the media after the funeral service for Dr. Daphne Phillips-Gaskin at the Trinidad Christian Center in Petit Valley.

Tr u m p ' s e s c a l a t i o n comes after US forces last week seized an oil tanker off Venezuela's coast—an unusual move that followed a build-up of military forces in the region, the Associated Press reported.

In a post on social m e d i a Tu e s d a y n i g h t announcing the blockade, Trump alleged Venezuela was using oil to fund drug t r a ff i c k i n g a n d o t h e r crimes, and vowed to

continue the military build-up until the country gave the US oil, land and assets, though it was not clear why he felt the US had a claim, the article stated. “ Ve n e z u e l a i s completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America,” Trump said in a post on his social media platform, it reported.

Trump stated: “It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before. Until such time as they return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us.”

When asked for a comment on Trump's latest announcement, PersadBissessar emphasised: “Trinidad and Tobago is about Trinidad and Tobago first. Our partnership with the United States is about Trinidad and Tobago and the safety and security here. Those are issues for the Trump administration and for the United States.

Pressed further on the US blockade in Venezuela, Persad-Bissessar said: “Those are matters within the sovereign powers of the

United States. I am not part of that. I am about Trinidad and Tobago first, and the safety and security of Trinidad and Tobago.

“It's a sovereign state, they are free to pursue what's in their best interest, and we will pursue what we see is in our best interest.”

She pointed out the US has not asked Trinidad and Tobago for any assistance w i t h t h e Ve n e z u e l a blockade.

She said, “Our position is to keep T&T safe first; that would always be our position. I have no intention of engaging in war with Venezuela. I've always said that we stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela, and we will continue to do so.”

'We don't need their oil' Persad-Bissessar was also asked about her t h o u g h t s o n Tr u m p ' s demand for Venezuela to return oil, land and other assets allegedly stolen from the US by Venezuela.

She responded, “Those may be items on his agenda. The items on the agenda for Trinidad and Tobago are about drugs, drug running, human

trafficking, narcotrafficking and gun running.”

The Prime Minister also spoke about the latest announcement made by Ve n e z u e l a n P r e s i d e n t Maduro regarding the cancellation of recent energy deals. She noted this was not the first time such a threat had been made by Venezuela to T&T. She explained, “If we could get their oil, we want it, but we do not need it. We have had over 100 years of the oil and gas economy, and not one drop of oil has come from Venezuela. We have ExxonMobil, we have others working in our fields.

“We have expanded our oilfields. Yes, we welcome the gas, but right now we don't need it if they don't want to give it.”

On October 27, Maduro announced he would be suspending all gas agreements with T&T. Then, on Monday, Maduro announced his decision to immediately terminate any existing contract, agreement or negotiation for the supply of natural gas to T&T.

Cybersecurity maturity improves in Latin America and Caribbean - IDB-OAS Report Finds Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have made significant progress in strengthening their cybersecurity capacity, but persistent gaps in resources, workforce development, and crosssector coordination continue to leave the region vulnerable to evolving digital threats, according to a new report by the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) and the Organization of American States (OAS).

T h e s t u d y, “ 2 0 2 5 Cybersecurity Report: Vulnerability and Maturity Challenges to Bridging the Gaps in Latin America and the Caribbean,” developed in partnership with the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre at the University of Oxford, provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of cybersecurity

maturity across 30 countries in the region. The report benchmarks national capacities using the Cybersecurity Capacity Maturity Model for Nations (CMM), enabling comparisons over time and between countries.

Drawing on unique data collected from OAS member states, the analysis provides an evidence-based view of how countries have advanced from 2020 to 2025 and the remaining gaps in their cybersecurity capabilities. The assessment is structured around the five dimensions of the CMM, covering key areas for cybersecurity readiness: cybersecurity policy and strategy; culture and society; education, training, and skills; legal and regulatory frameworks; and technology and standards. It provides a c t i o n a b l e recommendations for

policymakers, private-sector leaders, and civil society.

“The digital revolution is transforming economies and societies across Latin America and the Caribbean, but it also brings new risks,” said Paula Acosta, chief of the Institutional Capacity of State Division at the IDB. “This report shows that, while the region has made important progress and average results have improved across all assessed dimensions, there is a clear need to accelerate investment in cybersecurity, strengthen cross-sector collaboration, operational capabilities, and ensure that all countries are better equipped to manage the increasing cybersecurity risks.”

Key findings include: Steady progress, narrowing gaps: Since the last assessment in 2020, the region has seen a general

increase in cybersecurity maturity across all five CMM dimensions: policy and strategy, culture and society, knowledge and capabilities, legal and regulatory frameworks, and standards and technologies.

The maturity gap between countries is narrowing, reflecting a more balanced development.

Challenges to face: Despite progress, areas such a s s o f t w a r e q u a l i t y, protection of critical infrastructure, and the cybersecurity marketplace remain less mature.

Investment in cybersecurity research and innovation is still nascent, and cyber insurance adoption is limited.

AI and emerging threats: The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is reshaping the threat landscape, amplifying existing risks and

introducing new vulnerabilities. The report underscores the urgent need for updated governance, standards, and capacitybuilding to address AIrelated cybersecurity challenges.

The study highlights the importance of political leadership and absorptive capacity in advancing cybersecurity. Countries that integrate cybersecurity into broader development agendas and foster publicprivate partnerships are better positioned to respond to threats and close maturity gaps. "This report shows a clear positive trajectory across the region, but it also makes clear that cybersecurity is a collective r e s p o n s i b i l i t y. O u r longstanding partnership with the IDB and the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre at Oxford reflects exactly this spirit—working

together to give Member States the tools they need.

The OAS will continue standing alongside countries, providing technical support and fostering cooperation, so that the Hemisphere advances together," said Iván Marques, OAS S e c r e t a r y f o r Multidimensional Security.

The 2025 Cybersecurity Report is the result of a strategic collaboration between the OAS, IDB, and the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre at the University of Oxford. Third-lane madness ends in court …SRIS cameras lead to $190,000 in fines

he era of illegal thirdlane driving may finally be coming to an end, as surveillance cameras linked to the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS) have already sent multiple minibus drivers to court, resulting in $190,000 in fines within just days of the monitoring system going live.

Authorities confirmed that video footage generated by the SRIS was used to charge and convict three drivers for dangerous driving, while summonses have been issued for nine additional offenders who failed to appear in court after being flagged by the system. The enforcement push, led by the National Data Management Authority in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force, signals a decisive shift toward technologydriven policing on Guyana's roadways.

These cases underscore the effectiveness of the Safe Road Intelligent System in remotely monitoring road behaviour, identifying high-risk offenders, and supporting evidence-based enforcement and prosecution.

Motorists are advised that unlawful and dangerous driving identified through SRIS will be pursued through the courts without exception.

According to Ali, such partnerships promote confidence, reduce misunderstandings and contribute to regional stability.

The former President was keen to point out that he is unaware of any future military plans the US may have against Venezuela. “If they're gonna do this, they wouldn't tell Guyana...and so, I can't comment on a hypothetical. As far as we are concerned, we have engaged with the United States of America. They have assured us that our sovereignty, they will support us in protecting our territorial integrity and s o v e r e i g n t y, ” J a g d e o outlined.

While Guyana remains unaware of any military action the US may take against Venezuela, Jagdeo noted that the Trump government has already assured Guyana that its assets will be protected. He said, “They (the US government) have assured us, however, that the assets, the American assets in Guyanese waters, or Guyanese territory off shore, and our territorial integrity, fully supported by them.”

Last Wednesday, the United States seized an oil tanker just off the coast of Ve n e z u e l a , a n a c t i o n confirmed by President Donald Trump.

The vessel had been sanctioned by the U.S., and Trump stated that the oil would be retained by U.S. authorities, according to Reuters reports. In response, the Venezuelan government accused the United States of “blatant theft” and described

the seizure as “an act of international piracy.” The Venezuelan government said it would “defend its s o v e r e i g n t y, n a t u r a l resources, and national dignity with absolute determination” and denounce the seizure of the tanker before international bodies.

The seizure marked the first known action against an oil tanker since the U.S. ordered a significant military

build-up in the region. The U.S. has already carried out several strikes against suspected drug vessels, which has raised concerns among lawmakers and legal experts. British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the tanker Skipper was believed to have been seized off Venezuela early on Wednesday.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the tanker for what Washington said was

involvement in Iranian oil trading when it was called the Adisa.

While Trinidad and Tobago, like Guyana has publicly given its support to the US, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley is on record condemning the acts of aggression in Caribbean waters, which she says could potentially disrupt peace in the region and cause a mountain of other issues for small islands in the zone.

The Commander-inChief of the armed forces was at the time delivering an address at the annual Christmas Luncheon hosted by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at Camp Stephenson in Timehri.

He acknowledged the bravery and dedication of servicemen and women t h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r, especially in protecting the nation's sovereignty, which he underscored cannot be measured in dollars and cents.

The President said, “Every member of the force, regardless of rank, is essential to its strength and success and that respect flow in all directions. Every rank

has its role and every role has its value. Every contribution matter, from the newest recruit to the most senior officer, the force operates as a single body with each part dependent on the other for strength and success...on behalf of the people of Guyana I thank you most sincerely for your service.”

To t h i s e n d , h e announced that the onemonth tax-free bonus will benefit more than 13,000 members of the disciplined services and will cost the treasury $2.1B. In prefacing his announcement, Ali pointed out the measures implemented by the government to compensate the disciplined services. He noted that over the last five years, his government has not only restored the payment of a one-month tax-

free bonus but increased salaries, accelerated promotions, improved working conditions and expanded training opportunities.

He pointed out that the force over the past year continued to distinguish itself through its professionalism, disciple and dedication to duty and fulfilled its responsibility with resolve, often in demanding circumstances.

“You have protected Guyana's borders, you have safe guarded our territorial integrity, you have upheld our sovereignty. These are not abstract achievements nor are they matters that can be measured in dollars and cents.”

Ali went on to point out that the Christmas season deepens the meaning of the forces' responsibilities. “The message of Christmas does not deny the existence of

conflict or danger but it insists that peace remains possible. Even in a troubled world when wisdom prevails over impulse and justice over force. As we celebrate this moment, let us remain alert to threats to peace even as we recommit ourselves to preserving it,” he urged.

The one-month tax-free bonus for members of the joint services came one day after the President announced that government

will not be paying out a cash grant to the wider Guyanese population ahead of Christmas, although he previously hinted on the campaign trail that “you will have a bright Christmas.”

Public servants such as doctors, nurses and teachers will be expected for the first time in years to meet holiday expenses without any additional revenue from government to cushion their high expenses.

M o h a m e d w a s responding to Ali's more than two-hour national address on Wednesday night, which many Guyanese had tuned into expecting an announcement of a Christmas payout.

“Over promising and not delivering. The nation is angry. This disrespect to the nation is unacceptable. He had the citizens of this country waiting for 35 minutes before beginning his address…the address should not have been hours of fluffy language,” Mohamed said.

While citizens were expecting a cash grant this month, President Ali has made it clear that provisions will be made in the 2026 national budget for a $100,000 cash grant for every Guyanese citizen aged 18 years and older.

The Opposition MP argued that public frustration is justified. “Guyanese are upset. They're upset because promises were made, expectations were set and those promises were broken.

Many had plans for the cash grant,” he noted.

You want to give the nation a meager $100,000 with all the monies generated from oil, the cash grant was a campaign tool, not a guaranteed obligation…”

U.S. sanctions more ICC judges, citing ruling on Israeli war crime probe International court has repeatedly decried US sanctions amid its ongoing investigation into Gaza war crimes.

Aljazeera - The sanctions are the latest in a series of economic restrictions the administration of US President Donald Trump has placed on ICC members and their associates.

Critics warn such actions could chill investigations across the world and have wide-ranging implications for prosecutors, judges and even witnesses.

In February, for instance, the Trump administration issued broad sanctions targeting ICC staff and anyone assisting the court's investigations against the US and its allies.

The Trump White House continued by issuing individual sanctions against judges and prosecutors it disagreed with.

In June, four judges were sanctioned, two of whom participated in probes regarding US personnel in Afghanistan. The other two were involved in the decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Then, in August, the US expanded the sanctions, taking actions against two more judges and two ICC prosecutors.

Even entities outside the ICC have been hit with economic penalties as a result of their participation in its investigations.

Last September, Rubio announced that three nongovernmental organisations — Al Haq, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights — would also face sanctions for helping the ICC “investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute Israeli nationals”.

In a statement on Thursday, the court decried the latest US actions as a “flagrant attack against the independence of an impartial judicial institution”. It nevertheless pledged to carry out its mandate, despite US pressure.

“When judicial actors are threatened for applying the law, it is the international legal order itself that is placed at risk,” it said.

Israeli officials have repeatedly cheered the Trump administration's sanctions. The court also issued arrest warrants for several Hamas leaders, who were subsequently killed in Israeli o p e r a t i o n s . T h e Tr u m p administration has also pressured the court to officially end an investigation into US forces' conduct during its twodecade deployment in Afghanistan.

The US and Israel are not members of the ICC, and the Trump administration argues the court has exceeded its jurisdiction by investigating US and Israeli citizens.

“We will not tolerate ICC abuses of power that violate the sovereignty of the United States and Israel and wrongly subject US and Israeli persons to the ICC's jurisdiction,” Rubio said on Thursday.

But the court has maintained it can investigate abuses committed by the two countries within the borders of its signatories, including the occupied Palestinian territories.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sarah Leah Whitson, the executive director for the human rights nonprofit Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), said Rubio is “coddling Israeli war criminals”.

She added that the court should “not wait to prosecute him for interfering with justice”.

The foreign minister of The Netherlands, where the ICC is located, also condemned the move.

“International courts and tribunals must be able to freely carry out their mandates,” David van Weel said in a post on X. “We will continue to work with partners to this end. We support the court and its staff.”

WHO validates Brazil for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV The World Health Organization (WHO) has validated Brazil for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV, making it the most populous country in the Americas to achieve this historic milestone. This accomplishment reflects Brazil’s long-standing commitment to universal and free access to health services through its Unified Health System (SUS), anchored in a strong primary health-care system and respect for human rights.

“Eliminating mother-tochild transmission of HIV is a major public health achievement for any country, especially for a country as large and complex as Brazil,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO DirectorGeneral. “Brazil has shown that with sustained political commitment and equitable access to quality health services, every country can ensure that every child is born free of HIV and every mother receives the care she deserves.”

The milestone was marked during a ceremony in Brasília, attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s Minister of Health Alexandre Padilha, and the Director of the Pan American Health Or-

ganization (PAHO), Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, along with representatives from UNAIDS. Meeting validation criteria Brazil met all the criteria for EMTCT validation, including reducing vertical transmission of HIV to below 2% and achieving over 95% coverage for prenatal care, routine HIV testing, and timely treatment for pregnant women living with HIV. In addition to meeting the targets of the validation, Brazil demonstrated the delivery of quality services for mothers and their infants, robust data and laboratory systems, and a strong commitment to human rights, gender equality and community engagement.

The country implemented a progressive, subnational approach by first certifying states and municipalities with over 100 000 inhabitants, adapting the PAHO/WHO validation methodology to its national context while maintaining coherence across the country. The evaluation, supported by PAHO, was conducted by independent experts who reviewed data, documentation, and health facility operations. Findings were then assessed by WHO’s Global Validation Ad-

visory Committee, which formally recommended Brazil’s validation for elimination.

“This achievement shows that eliminating vertical transmission of HIV is possible when pregnant women know their HIV status, receive timely treatment, and have access to maternal health services and safe delivery,” said Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of PAHO. “It is also the result of the tireless dedication of thousands of health professionals, community health workers, and civil society organizations. Every day, they sustain the continuity of care, identify obstacles, and work to overcome them, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations can access essential health services.”

Part of a broader initiative Over the past decade (2015-2024), more than 50 000 pediatric HIV infections have been averted in the Region of the Americas as a result of the implementation of the initiative to eliminate mother-tochild transmission of HIV. S&P Global affirms CDB strong credit ratings and stable outlook The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB, the Bank) today announced that S&P Global Ratings has affirmed its long-term issuer credit rating of ‘AA+’ and an improved short-term issuer credit rating of ‘A-1+’, with a Stable Outlook. This rating reflects S&P’s view that, over the next two years, CDB will maintain high capitalisation and a solid business profile, as the region’s preferred lender. This assessment endorses CDB’s continued financial strength and its critical role in supporting sustainable development across the Caribbean.

According to S&P, the affirmation follows a comprehensive review under its revised methodology for multi-

lateral lending institutions.

The Bank’s risk-adjusted capital (RAC) ratio increased to 59.6%, well above the threshold for extremely strong capital adequacy.

This improvement was supported by CDB’s recent Exposure Exchange Agreement (EEA), which reduced portfolio concentration and enhanced risk management.

When politicians speak, the masses should take their words with a pinch of salt. The excitement and vigor in the language used

by President Irfaan Ali while on the campaign trail brought hope to the hearts of so many Guyanese who were hoping that their Christmas would have indeed been “bright” and “beautiful” as promised.

Families who struggle to make ends meet welcomed the announcement,only to learn at the last moment that their Christmas will instead be “blue” with the worries of financing household necessities with no end of year bonus and no cash grant to offset the holiday expenses.

For those earning big bucks monthly, the President's failure to keep his promise will not come as a disappointment. It is those who were truly hoping to be able to buy Christmas meat, and groceries, or a shiny new gift for the child.

The reality is that the President has failed to deliver on a promise, but will come again next elections season with the same old tricks to win votes again.

ilver Shattas humbled Amelia’s Ward Panthers, 11-2, and record their first outright victory, but winning their second straight matches were FC YMCA, C a p i t a l F C , Wi n n e r s Connection and Blueberry Hill after second night action in this Banks DIH major sponsored, Upper Demerara Football Association run 4th annual Christmas Futsal Championship Wednesday night, at the Retrieve Hard Court in Linden.

In their Group C battle, the FC YMCA came from a 0-2 half time score to record a 3-2 win over Net Rockers. Goals banged in by Shane Luckie and Denzil Pryor before half time seemed like enough to

send the YMCA to certain defeat.

However, this was not to be, since double strikes

by Barrack John and the other by Jaden Nelson, saw them recover to gain an important victory.

It was victory number two as they had crushed Eagles United 8-2 in their first game on the opening night.

Up next was the Group B tussle as Capital FC after gaining a 2-0 lead, stopped Fearless 50. It was their second win after getting the first via the walkover route against Coomacka on the first night of the tournament.

For this win by Capital FC, Selwyn

Barnes and Duquan Wilson recorded braces, while Devonte Tappin knocked in the other.

After that match, playing in Group A, Topp XX defeated Hi Stars 5-3.

England’s Ashes hopes hanging by a thread as Australia press for victory in Adelaide ADELAIDE, (Reuters) Nearly four years of Ashes planning was left in smouldering ruins on Thursday as England buckled under the heat and the pressure at Adelaide Oval to lurch towards a series-deciding defeat in the third test against Australia.

On a day when temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104F) and fresh controversy erupted over the “Snicko” review technology, England were 213 for eight at stumps on day two, still 158 runs short of Australia’s first innings 371.

England captain Ben Stokes (45 not out) was battling cramp and Jofra Archer (30 not out) showed courage to keep the ninth

wicket intact for 45 runs, but the duo’s late resistance could do little to make up for failures higher up the order.

Leading 2-0 in the series, Australia need only draw the match to retain the urn they have held since 2017/18.

But there was little sign the hosts would be content with anything less than another crushing win after their comfortable victories in Perth and Brisbane.

There was certainly no easing back into the action for Australia’s returning captain Pat Cummins and recalled spinner Nathan Lyon, who combined to blitz England’s top order before lunch.

“Pretty proud about how the boys went about it,” Lyon told TNT Sports. “Pat’s been

phenomenal as captain as always, but the effort from our fast bowlers to get them 213-8 off 68 overs it’s a pretty big effort so rest up, recover and we’ll have another crack in the morning.”

Mbappe edges closer to Ronaldo record as Real survive Copa del Rey test TALAVERA DE LA REINA, Spain, (Reuters) Kylian Mbappe moved tantalisingly close to C r i s t i a n o R o n a l d o ’s calendar-year scoring record for Real Madrid with a brace as they earned a 3-2 victory at third-tier Talavera de la Reina on Wednesday to reach the Copa del Rey’s last 16 after a pulsating encounter.

The French striker’s two goals, combined with an own-goal by defender Manuel Farrando, proved enough despite strikes from Nahuel Arroyo and Gonzalo Di Renzo that threatened to spoil Real’s evening in front of a raucous crowd.

Devon Conway and Tom Latham harvested a century each and by that time they were having so much fun they would barely let anybody else play.

A first Test win on these shores for 30 years, which if secured would hand them a share of this series’ spoils. All of that cast them in the role of a protagonist at the start of the day. But as time wore on and records - both trivial and tumultuous - came to pass, Roston Chase and his men faded into the background.

Each of the five previous Test matches at this ground have yielded a wicket in its first session. This one didn’t.

Kane Williamson, so used to an early start at the office, had to wait the longest he

ever has to clock in. So restless had he grown that at the start of the final session, he was seen wearing all his gear barring the helmet practicing a rapid-fire series of leaves and blocks. There will be reels. Split-screens with Latham and Conway facing real cricket balls out in the middle and this guy just pretending to do so with a caption of who did it better.

The answer is actually Terry Jarvis and Glenn Turner.

Latham had a big part in the history he helped make.

Over 25 home Tests, dating all the way back to March 2012, New Zealand have only ever chosen to bowl after winning the toss. Here, he had a hunch about putting runs on the board. Outside of that one bold move, everything else he did was basic. Playing close to the body. Knowing exactly where his off stump was. Frustrating the bowlers to target his pads.

Test cricket was so close to having a fifth opening pair lasting the entire first day.

run-a-ball. He went on to bat for longer than he has ever done since his doublecentury on debut at Lord’s four years ago.

The only way any of this could have been worse for West Indies was if they had brought it all on themselves, and only the finest line separated that from what actually happened. Because they got what they wanted at the toss. First use of a surface that looked like it had been left in the care of a kindergartener with a green crayon. The bowlers, though, didn’t make the best use of it.

Their third seamer, Anderson Phillip, started with a spell of 3-0-25-0, and as hard as he tried to improve - creating a rare wickettaking opportunity when Latham nicked one behind to the keeper on 104 and was dropped - he still went to stumps with 14-2-71-0. It was symptomatic of a

bowling attack that still produced jaffas - and might feel aggrieved none of them yielded any joy - but didn’t have it in them to back it up; to hit the good length spot consistently, test the batter’s discipline and search for vulnerability. Indeed, at the start of the second session, New Zealand had a harder time not scoring boundaries, five of them coming their way in the space of 12 balls. A small spell of rain offered West Indies the chance to regroup and they appeared willing to take it, Jayden Seales adopting the method of local hero Neil Wagner and going short for a concerted period of time.

Conway wore one on the left hand, needed medical attention, and at the start of the 52nd over, he was overheard on the stump mic asking the umpire about the time for tea. He was in need of reprieve. Seconds later, Chase lobbed up a long hop that he pulled away for four.

West Indies kept undoing their own good work. Often immediately.

This was no batting paradise. Nor was it ever a fast bowler’s dream. Spinners took two-thirds of the wickets in the most recent first-class game in Mount Maunganui. It is with that in mind that New Zealand brought Ajaz Patel into the XI and backed themselves to put up a big total.

Conway has led them there - batting through cramp, batting one-handed and eventually hitting that rarefied place where he was just batting on instinct, reacting perfectly even to things like extra and low bounce - but things could have been so different if West Indies had shown a little more discipline. Now their batters have to pick up the slack.

Despite having the series in their clutches following a pair of opening wins, Guyana have found themselves in a peculiar situation with an in-form Barbados side on their heels and all the chips on the table, during today’s final battle for the series at Everest Ground.

Barbados have swung the pendulum in their favor after yanking the series back into a position of a possible series victory, after suffering back-to-back losses in Game 1 and 2.

Walker opines, “With Cristy’s dedication and work ethic as a former champion, it has now been impacted to her administrative functions which is having a telling effect on our young lawn tennis talent. Her new role could serve as great motivation to get Guyana back as Caribbean champs.

Guyana could look to win today’s meeting with the ball, having endured mixed results with the bat.

Guyana’s top amateurs ‘touch gloves’ at GBA National Championship from today G u y a n a ’s p r e m i e r amateur boxing talent will be on full display from tomorrow as the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Championship gets underway at the National Gymnasium on Saturday, promising three days of intense, high-quality competition among the country’s leading gyms.

The championship, which serves as the GBA’s final statutory competition for the year, has generated significant excitement within the local boxing fraternity.

Boxers will feature in the weigh-in from today, setting the tone for fistic fury from Saturday evening.

Secretary of the GBA, Stacy Correia, said the Association is pleased with the level of interest and enthusiasm shown by boxing gyms across Guyana, describing the response as a strong indicator of the sport’s continued growth. “ We a r e e x t r e m e l y excited with the feedback and enthusiasm shown by the gyms around Guyana. Wi t h e i g h t t e a m s competing in this year’s edition, the tournament has delivered fireworks from the opening whistle. Now, with the semifinals set for today at the Ministry of Education ground, the stage is perfectly set for a dramatic push toward crowning a new—or repeat—champion.

The competition has showcased outstanding individual and team performances. From Bryan W h a r t o n ’s n i n e - g o a l masterclass in the opening matchup against the Bahamians to disciplined defensive displays, each team has brought a unique style to the tournament, making the journey to the

semifinals highly entertaining.

Defending champions Chase’s Academic Foundation have once again underlined why they are the team to beat. Their campaign began in emphatic fashion with a staggering 24–1 demolition of the Bahamas’ Anglican Central Educational Authority (ACEA). They then booked their semifinal spot by overcoming a stern test from J a m a i c a ’s p o w e r h o u s e Kingston College, edging them 3–2 on Wednesday evening in what many have described as the match of the tournament so far.

H o w e v e r, C h a s e ’s semifinal push comes with a setback, as they will be without captain and leading goal-scorer Bryan Wharton, who is suspended following a red-card dismissal in their previous outing.

St Benedict’s College, no strangers to high-pressure football, have enjoyed a flawless run thus far. The Trinidadians opened with a convincing 4–0 win over Annai Secondary (Guyana), followed by an impressive 7–2 triumph against S u r i n a m e Te c h n i c a l

Institute. Their toughest test came against Brazil’s Jose Viera School, where a composed 1–0 victory, courtesy of striker Josiah Barrow, sealed their place in the semifinals and preserved their unbeaten record.

While the frontrunners s u rg e d a h e a d , s e v e r a l contenders fell away after the first three rounds. ACEA endured a difficult debut, s u ff e r i n g t h r e e h e a v y defeats, including a 28–0 drubbing by Kingston College. That infamous victory came after a thrilling 6–5 comeback victory over West Ruimveldt Secondary—led by braces from Davion Clarke and Abriel Fisher—before eventually falling to Chase.

Suriname Technical Institute (Nickerie) have quietly built momentum.

They opened with a 2–0 victory over Jose Viera School, fell to St Benedict’s College, but rebounded strongly with a 9–3 win over Annai Secondary to clinch their semifinal berth.

While four teams advance, West Ruimveldt S e c o n d a r y, A n n a i Secondary, Anglican Central Educational Authority, and

Jose Viera School all exit at this stage, failing to secure spots in the final four.

Today’s semifinal action kicks off at 18:00 hrs with St Benedict’s College (Trinidad and Tobago) facing Kingston College (Jamaica). Kingston will be out for redemption following their narrow defeat to defending c h a m p i o n s C h a s e ’s Academic, with goal machine Davion Clarke—currently on eight goals—eager to close the gap at the top of the scoring

c h a r t s . S t B e n e d i c t ’s , meanwhile, will be focused on maintaining their perfect record and taking another step toward the title.

In the second semifinal, Chase’s Academic Foundation (Guyana) will battle Suriname Technical Institute for the final spot in the KFC finale. Despite missing their captain, the 2024 champions have shown they can deliver under pressure. Suriname Technical Institute, however, have proven they are no pushovers and will be aiming to spring a major upset in pursuit of a maiden KFC Goodwill final appearance. Meanwhile, as anticipation builds, tournament organisers are expecting a sensational climax. Petra’s Head Troy Mendonca noted that the semifinal clashes could shape an unforgettable finale.

“Chase’s Academic and Kingston College have been playing well, though Kingston unfortunately went d o w n o n We d n e s d a y evening in their bid to remain

unbeaten. With the semifinal fixtures set, these two teams could possibly meet again, but St Benedict’s College will be no walkover as they faceoff with the Jamaicans today. Suriname, on the other hand, will also face their biggest task of the tournament when they take on defending champions Chase’s Academic Foundation. These two matchups are expected to set the tone for a thrilling finale,” Mendonca also shared.

The sixth edition of the KFC Goodwill Football Series is made possible through renewed title sponsorship from KFC Guyana, with support from Demerara Mutual, ANSA McAL (Lucozade), SkyTec Enterprise, Royal International Hotel, Austal GBTI Bank, New GPC (Limacol), Trans Guyana Airways, MVP Sports, along with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs. Elton Dharry will fight for the IBO Super Bantam weight world title in February.

uyana’s veteran professional boxer Elton “The Bully” Dharry is set to return to the global spotlight when he takes on Tanzania’s Salmin Kassim for the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Super Bantamweight World Title in February.

The bout, which represents Dharry’s second shot at a world crown, will be officially unveiled today when the organisers, in collaboration with the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, host a press conference at the Pegasus Hotel.

The event will confirm the date, venue and full fight details for what promises to be a major moment in Guyanese boxing.

Dharry, 40, enters the contest with a proven and battle-tested résumé, boasting a professional ring record of 30 wins, including 17 knockouts,

against six defeats.

The Guyanese pugilist previously challenged Australian Andrew Maloney for the WBA Super Flyweight World Title, a bout that ended in controversial fashion and remains a talking point among boxing observers when mentioning Dharry’s career.

The upcoming title fight comes at a time of strong momentum for Dharry.

Earlier this year, he picked up a unanimous decision victory over Roger Saldana at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, a performance that further underlined his resurgence.

He is currently riding a six-fight winning streak, during which he captured the WBC International Super Flyweight title and the WBA Super Flyweight Gold belt.
