Deepwaterport

France’s sudden enthusiasm for Guyana’s deepwater port project should be viewed with a healthy degree of skepticism. The proposal is being presented as a mutually beneficial partnership that would strengthen trade links, improve regional integration, and create new economic opportunities.

Such arguments sound attractive on the surface. Yet Guyanese policymakers would be wise to look beyond the diplomatic language and ask a straightforward question: whostandstogainthemost?

The mirage of

Intellectual Property Reform:

Why Guyana needs governance architecture, not merely laws

DEAREDITOR,

President Irfaan Ali’s recent declaration, published on May 26th, 2026, in the Kaieteur News, regarding the urgent imperative to modernize Guyana’s legislative framework for intellectualproperty(IP),touchesupon aprofoundstructuraltruth.

The President is entirely correct: as Guyana experiences an unprecedented economic expansion driven by its extractive sectors, the absence of a modern, rigorous IP regime creates an unsustainable economic vacuum. A nation transforming into a global economicenginecannotrunoncolonial legalrelics.

Yet, as we approach this legislative turning point, we must guard against a seductive illusion the belief that passing compliance-driven legislation is the same as building a functional innovationecosystem.

Shame on the people of Guyana for allowing this nonsense to continue

DEAREDITOR,

The maxim, “it never rains but pours,” truly apply to the Government of our beloved country.Whatmore must we suffer before the people are awaken? The saying“themoreyouwatch, thelessandsee;thelessyou seeisbetterforme”.

Where do we start? I have said it numerous times before – Democracy in Guyana begins when the pollsareopenandendswhen thevotesarecountedandthe electionresultsdeclared.

We have seen that repeatedly under the PPP administration and the same was seen under the coalition (APNU/AFC). Are we so naïve that we continue to voteforapoliticalpartythat sees us during the election

campaign and we become invisiblethereafter–waiting forthenextcycle.

Let’s start with the swearinginofthePresident. Theconstitutiondoesnotfix a date for this event, yet the President is sworn in almost immediately when the

Guyanese citizens have every right to demand answers. Howmuchwilltheprojectcost?Whowillprovidefinancing? What interest rates and repayment conditions are being proposed?Whatguaranteesarebeingrequested?

Howmuchoftheeconomicactivitygeneratedbytheport willremaininGuyana?Howmuchwillflowabroadthrough foreignoperators,contractors,andshippingcompanies?

These questions deserve clear answers before any commitmentsaremade.

France’s interest in a deepwater harbour should not be

Secondly, wearetoldthat the excessive rain caused floods in various parts of country How preposterous. We have seen the shabby work that contractors across the country are doing which leadstothefloodingcrisis.

Classic case in point is the work on the railway embankment road. Which engineer will approve that dysfunctional construction where the road is almost 12 feet higher than the surrounding lands and the drains are blocked? Where willthewaterflow?

The NDIA has received billions of dollars over the years, yet many main

drainage canals have overgrown burden. Where will the water flow after the rain? In the same token, many of our citizens are guilty of disposing of their garbage in the waterways. Where are the gatekeepers who are tasked to prevent this? Where are the garbage receptacles for use by law abidingcitizens?

Shame on the people of Guyana for allowing this nonsense to continue. We need a government that will putthepeoplefirst.Ilearnta statement made recently on socialmediawhichsaysthat “the power of the people is greater than the people in power”.

mistaken for charity It reflects strategic and economic calculations There is nothing unusual about that What would be unusual and irresponsible would be for Guyana to ignore its own interests while accommodating thoseofothers

As Guyana’s economic importance grows, external pressure will increase. Others will be designed primarilytoadvanceforeigninterests.

Adeepwaterharbourmayultimatelyprovebeneficial. But before Guyana signs onto another multibillion-dollar undertaking, itmustrememberasimpleprinciple:ifaforeign government appears especially eager for Guyana to borrow money and build infrastructure, Guyana should first determine exactly who is expected to profit when the bills comedue.

Flooding demands facts, not political theatre

DEAREDITOR,

The recent flooding across Guyana is serious. Families in Regions Four, Five, Six and other areas deserve relief, not political point-scoring.

APNU’s claim that the flooding is simply the result of PPP/C’s neglect does not withstand scrutiny. Guyana has always faced a difficult drainage challenge, a lowlying coastal plain, intense rainfall, aging canals, kokers, pumps and sea defence systems This problem did not begin in 2020.

During APNU+AFC’s tenure, flooding remained a recurring national complaint. Stabroek News reported flooding in the city andEastCoastinJuly2019, with residents’ yards and roadways under water In December 2019, another Stabroek News letter described flooding in

RegionsTwo andThree and alleged “gross negligence” b y t h e r e g i o n a l administration. In 2018, parts of South Georgetown, including Ruimveldt and Riverview, were reportedly flooded for weeks because of poor drainage. These reports show that APNU had no magic solution when it held office.

What is different now is the scale of response Guyana Chronicle reported thatPresidentAlichairedan emergency Cabinet meeting and deployed ministers across affected regions to assess communities and coordinaterelief.

DPI also reported that ministers were sent into the regions to engage residents and organise immediate support Guyana Times reportedthat51pumpswere d e p l o y e d t o h e l p floodwaters recede. That is

not neglect; that is visible governmentaction.

WIN, for its part, has no governing record on drainage, irrigation, or disaster management. It is easy to criticise from Facebook. It is harder to manage pumps, canals, kokers, rainfall, regional councils, agriculture, sea defenceandemergencyrelief atthesametime

The wider context also matters This is not a Guyana-only event The region is experiencing intense rainfall and flood risks.

Trinidad and Tobago’s 2026 wet-season outlook warnsthatevenanormal-tobelow-normal season can still produce damaging rainfall and moderate flood potential.

ReliefWeb and Reuters reported serious flooding and displacement in Brazil duringMay2026.Caribbean

climate-healthguidancealso warned that increased rainfall and stagnant water from flooding would affect Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana from late AprilorMayonward.

None of this means government should escape criticism. Drainage must improve. Maintenance must be constant. Communities

must receive timely assistance But honest criticism must also admit historyandcontext.

APNU had its chance and flooding continued WIN has slogans but no

record The present government is being tested by weather, infrastructure, and geography, and the proper measure is not who posts the loudest, but who shows up, mobilises resources, and reaches the people.

Sincerely,

Stop the wasteful spending and end the flooding

DEAREDITOR,

We the Guyanese people have had enough of the wasteful spending being carried out by the current administration.

The NRF has been depleted, debt has been accumulated and what do we have to show for it? The flooding continues to get worse as the climate changes and there has been a lack of

focus on preventing this inevitable crisis from getting worse All Guyanese, both old and young must sendaclearmessagetothegovernment thatenoughisenough!

During the upcoming local government elections, they must be voted out. The power is in the vote of our people. Use it wisely and ensure thatthoseelectedplacetheurgencyand

South America’s rise

...as global oil markets seek new supply

(Reuters) As global oil markets focus on disruptions in the Middle East and surging U.S. production, a quieter but increasingly significantstoryisunfoldingclosertohome: SouthAmericaisrapidlyemergingasamajor force in global crude supply, with Guyana playingapivotalrole.

AlongsideBrazilandVenezuela,Guyana has helped drive the largest increase in oil exports of any producing region so far this year, reshaping global trade flows and strengthening the Atlantic Basin’s importanceinmeetingworldenergydemand.

Theshifthasbeengradual, dispersedand largelyuncoordinated.Butinaggregate, itis turning SouthAmerica into a de facto swing supplierhidinginplainsight.

The collapse in crude exports from the Middle East so far this year has rightly dominatedoilmarketattention.

Producers in the region have accounted for around 43 percent of all seaborne oil exports over the past decade, data from commodities intelligence firm Kpler shows, anchoringglobalcrudetrade.

But the near-total closure of the Strait of Hormuz since March has slashed shipments

fromtheregionbymorethanaquarterduring JanuarytoMaycomparedtotheyearbefore, leaving a supply shortfall of roughly 675 millionbarrels.

That gap is too large for any single producer to quickly replace, forcing markets to lean heavily on inventories. It has also amplified the importance of rising supply elsewhere-notablyfromSouthAmerica.

Several exporters have lifted shipments this year, helping to offset part of the disruption.

But nowhere has the increase been more pronounced than in South America, where total exports have posted their largest ever year-over-year gain, rising by around 155 million barrels to eclipse the growth of all otherregionscombined.

Among the 10 nations to increase crude oilexportsthemostsofarin2026,theUnited States ranks top, registering a nearly 112million-barrel increase during January to May compared to the same months in 2025, accordingtoKpler

However, South America’s contribution has been both broader and more structurally significant.

Every day you pick up the newspaper and you are greeted by another tragedy on our roads. It has become so routine that we scarcely have time to absorb one horrific accident before anothertakesitsplace.

Just two days ago, three persons lost their lives in a devastating road accident. Before that, there were others. And before those, morestill.

The question is often asked:whyareroadfatalities increasing? The answer usually given is reckless driving.

And there is no doubt that reckless use of our roadways is a major factor

Speeding, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, and a general disregard for traffic laws have all contributed to the alarming number of accidents and deaths.Butfocusingonlyon enforcement is addressing onlyhalfoftheproblem.

The other half is mathematics. Specifically, it is the law of numbers and probability

Imagine a roadway designed for 5,000 vehicles per day Today, that same r o a d w a y m a y b e accommodating 20,000 or 30,000 vehicles daily. The country’s road network has n o t i n c r e a s e d correspondingly with the growthofvehiculartraffic.

The more vehicles you placeinaconfinedspace, the greater the probability that they will come into conflict withoneanother Thisisnot politics.Itismathematics.

If one vehi

e is travelling on a road, the probability of a collision is virtuallyzero.Iftenvehicles are using the same road, the probability increases. If one hundredvehiclesareusingit, it increases further If thousands of vehicles are competing for the same limitedroadspaceeveryday, the opportunities for mistakes, conflicts, and accidents increase exponentially

Even if every driver became slightly more cautioustomorrow, thesheer volume of traffic would still generate a higher likelihood ofcollisions.Inotherwords, our road safety problem is not only a problem of reckless driving. It is also a problem of too many vehicles occupying too little numberofroads.

Yet policymakers rarely discuss this aspect of the issue. Why?

Because addressing it requires difficult conversationsaboutslowing down economic activity, or at least managing it differently Nobodywantsto be accused of putting the brakes on commerce and growth.

Butperhapsitistimewe remembered that societies have confronted similar challenges before. In the early twentieth century, workers routinely endured working days of twelve to sixteen hours. Workers had little time for family life, education, recreation, or religiousobservance.

activists, and social reformers recognised this. They fought for fixed working hours and limits on commercial activity Businesses were required to close at certain times Sundaybecame, formany,a dayofrest.

These reforms were designedprimarilytoprotect workers from exploitation. But they had another effect. Theyreducedactivityonthe roads.

By four o clock in the afternoon, manycommercial districts had begun to wind down.Saturdaywashalfday for businesses. And most markets closed half day on Wednesdays. On Sundays, roads were quieter because shops were closed and people remained closer to home.Fewervehiclesonthe r

Sunday Some workers are often expected to work extended hours, sometimes without receiving the overtime compensation to which they are legally entitled. The result is that traffic volumes remain high almost every day of the week.

Perhaps it is time to revisit some of these questions. Not because we wish to turn back the clock, butbecauseweneedtothink

seriously about how to reduce the number of vehicles competing for limitedroadspace.

The solution is not to shut down the economy Rather, it is to organise it moreintelligently

Enforcing reasonable opening and closing hours for businesses would help. Protectingworkers’rightsto rest and family time would help.Encouragingstaggered working hours would help. Public servants, except the essential services like the hospitals, can do the same amountofworkinafour-day workweek.

Most importantly, we need alternatives to private vehicle use. School buses, for example, could significantly reduce the number of vehicles on our roads during peak periods. Every parent who does not have to drive a child to

school is one less vehicle contributingtocongestion. L

transportation should be on the national agenda. There hasbeentalkaboutlightrail systems, although questions remain about where such

considerations should have been

The uncomfortable truth is that we cannot continue increasing the number of vehiclesindefinitelywithout expecting consequences The laws of probability do not wait on anyone. They simplyoperate. And right now, they are operatingagainstus.

If we are serious about reducingroadfatalities, then we must address not only reckless driving but also the sheer volume of traffic on our roads. Sometimes the safest thing a society can do isnottospeedup, buttoslow down, notonourroadsbutin thewaywelive.

Lula says Brazil cannot ‘accept treatment’ after new US tariffs proposed

Lula said he had left a May meeting at the White House with Trump optimisticthatrelationswere improving.

During the first year of Trump’ssecondterm, which began on January 20, 2025, the two leaders had butted heads over issues of trade, humanrightsandpolitics.

The new tariffs are instead imposed under Section 301 of US trade policy The statute gives the US government broad authority to impose trade sanctions based on alleged violations of trade agreements.

Under the Trade Act of 1974, it also allows for the imposition of penalties for trade practices deemed “unfair”.

BEIRUT (AP) — President Donald Trump acknowledged criticizingIsraeliPrimeMinister BenjaminNetanyahuas“crazy” in a phone call that involved expletives, saying he was “a little bit perturbed” that Israel’s fighting with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon was holding back peace talks with Iran.

But even as the U S president conceded the tensions in an interview released Wednesday, he insisted that his relationshipwithNetanyahuwas solidandthattheyconnected,in part, because they are both “wartime”leaders.

“We’ve worked very well together I like Bibi a lot.And I work very well with him,” TrumptoldTheNewYorkPost’s “PodForceOne.”

The president’s comments about the Monday call offered a sign of the growing pressure he faces to resolve the Iran war as higher energy prices and economic uncertainty threaten Republican prospects in the midterm elections and hamper globalcommerce.

France applyingpressure

France’s sudden enthusiasm for Guyana’s deepwater port should be viewed with caution. While dressed up as a partnership to boost trade and regional integration, the reality is that the biggest beneficiaries may well be foreign interests seeking easier access to Guyana’s resources and markets. France complains that the absence of a deepwater harbour limits trade with Europe, yet it is Guyana that would be expected to shoulder the debt, risks, and long-term maintenance costs.

The push for loans and large-scale infrastructure projects raises a familiar question: who profits most? Guyanese taxpayers could be left repaying billions while foreign companies enjoy cheaper shipping routes and expanded commercial opportunities. Development is important, but Guyana must avoid being pressured into borrowing heavily for projects whose primary value lies in serving external economic interests rather than the country’s own strategic needs.

Hardworkandpreparationbringrewardfor WestRuimveldtPrimaryinFutureWarriorsTapeball

There is a distinct, raw beauty in grassroots Tapeball cricket, where the margins are razor-thin, and the emotions run completely unchecked.

On Sunday at the National Stadium in Providence, those emotions spilt over into tears of absolute jubilation as West Ruimveldt Primary clinched the Demerara zone title in the Future Warriors Tapeball tournament, poweredbyExxonMobilGuyana.

For West Ruimveldt, this was not just a weekend tournament victory;itwasaredemptionarc.

Havingreachedthefinalfourin the previous editions only to fall agonisingly short of lifting the trophy, the team returned this year with a meticulous blueprint for success.“Wehaveputinextensive preparation into this year’s campaign,” Andre Webber, a teacher attached to the school’s cricket team, reflected proudly afterthefinal.

The heartbreak of the past served as the fuel for their current triumph, thoughthesheerweightof the achievement caught the young squad by surprise when the final wicketfell.“Letmebehonestwith you,[lookingatthemnow]theyare crying.Itcameoutsuccessfully.”

ThefinalpittedWestRuimveldt against Chateau Margot Primary, an East Coast Demerara outfit that had rightfully earned a reputation as the tournament’s preeminent ‘chase masters.’ Armed with data and discipline, West Ruimveldt chose to bat first and immediately threw a wrench into Chateau Margot’s plans by posting a formidable 66 for 4—the highest totaloftheentirecompetition.

The foundational bricks of that championship-winning total were laidbyBryanHunter, whosmashed a brisk, 12-ball 23, punctuated by three boundaries and a solitary, toweringsix.

Skipper Steven Orie provided the perfect foil with a crucial, stabilising18,ensuringtherunrate never dipped despite a probing, high-quality spell from Chateau Margot’sMahendraChunilall, who pickedup2for10.

Chateau Margot’s pursuit,

usually so calculated, never found its rhythm against a relentless and hostileWestRuimveldtattack.

Rohit Shama top-scored with just5asVincentFarley(2for5)and the ubiquitous Orie (2 for 8) triggered a steady procession of wickets.

Orie capped off a sensational individual campaign as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 49 runs, alongside a crucial three-wicket haul across the tournament that rightfully earned him the Most Valuable Player award Farley finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker withfivescalps.

West Ruimveldt’s passage to the final was forged on defensive bowling excellence. In their semifinal clash, a combined bowling effortfromFarley(2for3),Hunter (2 for 7), and Zyron Austin (2 for 12) restricted Rama Krishna Primary to 36 for 8. Orie’s steady, unbeaten 10 then steered them safelyacrosstheline.

Chateau Margot’s route to the final was far more dramatic and true to their moniker They pulled off yet another signature, ice-cool chase against former champions StellaMaris, huntingdownatarget of 52 with five wickets and seven balls to spare. Ezekiel Thomas’ unbeaten18andClevonJacobs’16 hadoriginallyliftedStellaMaristo a competitive 51 for 2, but Wazim Khan’s nerveless, five-ball cameo of 10* sealed an emphatic win for ChateauMargot.

Stella Maris eventually found consolation in the third-place playoff, bossing a 51-run chase against Rama Krishna to win by sevenwicketsinsidejust5.3overs.
