Omai rooted for Ali’s re-election — backs PPP/C as gold mining boom accelerates

resident and Chief Executive Officer of Omai Gold Mines Corp., Elaine Ellingham, has said the company was confident President Irfaan Ali would be re-elected at the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections.

During an interview with Crux Investor, Ellingham also praised the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration for its strong support of large-

scale gold mining projects in Guyana.

She said the outcome of the recent presidential election was a critical turning point for investors, noting that political stability was key to long-term planning in the mining s e c t o r. “…So, the incumbent got in very strong I think it was a 55 or 57% of the vote exceeded expectations also additional seats in parliament. Again, that was a big win. So now

they have they basically have a five-year runway and for them that was really important,” Ellingham said.

She acknowledged that elections often create uncertainty for investors but said she remained confident President Ali would retain office, pointing to his international visibility. “I was very confident because I mean, I think you’ve probably noticed President Irfaan Ali gets quite a bit of profile on the international

stage because of the oil and gas business, but he’s a very impressive guy,” Ellingham stated.

To this end, she described as strong enthusiasm from the government for largescale gold developments, particularly in Guyana’s interior regions.

There are several gold operations across Guyana that are expected to start production before the end of the decade, joining the only large-scale gold producer in

Kaieteur News had reported that there are five Canadian mining companies including Omai collectively controlling an estimated 15.5 million ounces of gold across various stages of development. These projects, spanning across Guyana’s mining regions, are progressing through exploration, feasibility studies, and permitting.

Many of the companies have praised Guyana’s miningfriendly policies and are banking on these projects to drive substantial growth for their shareholders.

Omai holds 100% interest in the pastproducing Omai gold project, which hosts two orogenic gold deposits: the shear-hosted Wenot Deposit and the adjacent intrusivehosted Gilt Creek Deposit.

The project is in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).

The company said it has completed a total of 79 drill holes totalling 35,300 metres on the Omai project so far this year. Omai previously announced an updated combined Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) of 2.1 million ounces of gold (indicated), a 7% increase, and 4.3 million ounces of gold (inferred), a 92% increase from the previous MRE.

‘Zone of Peace in Peril’ ...Walton-Desir warns Guyana could pay the price as U.S.–Venezuela tensions escalate

eader of the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) and Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir has sounded a stark warning over rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela, cautioning that any escalation into open conflict in Caribbean waters could have devastating and irreversible consequences for Guyana and the wider region.

Speaking during an interview on GoMosely Radio, Walton-Desir s a i d t h e C a r i b b e a n ’s l o n g cherished identity as a “zone of peace” is now under serious threat.

“I am deeply concerned. What we are seeing is an aspiration we held on to for decades slipping away, and that has to alarm all of us,” she said. She also criticised what she described as a lack of decisive regional intervention by CARICOM. Walton-Desir warned that any escalation into war would have direct and lasting consequences for Guyana, particularly given its proximity to Venezuela. She stressed that regional leaders must approach the situation with restraint. “For us in this region though, our leaders, the ones that speak on our behalf have to understand that now is the time for them to be very sober and very temperate because we have seen this played out in other parts of the world and it never ends well...do

you understand what this means for Guyana should this happen? Do you understand that our lives will never be the same if war breaks out in Venezuela and so we have got to understand the implications for us,” she cautioned.

The MP explained that a conflict would likely result in a sharp increase in migration into Guyana. She noted that an influx of refugees would overwhelm the country’s healthcare, education, and social services, while forcing the government to divert resources away from improving the lives of Guyanese.

Walton-Desir also warned of serious security implications, including the spill over of illegal arms, drugs, and criminal activity.

While acknowledging Venezuela’s actions regarding Guyana’s Essequibo territory, Walton-Desir maintained that war would serve no constructive purpose. “Maduro has been a pain in our side as it relates to Essequibo, but war in the region will serve no purpose, it will benefit no one,” she said.

CARICOM lack of regional intervention In relation to CARICOM, Walton-Desir said the regional body must take a stronger, more unified stance.

She called for a return to a rulesbased international order and criticised the organisation’s long-

standing inability to act collectively, which she said has left Caribbean states vulnerable to pressure from larger powers. “I think Caricom as a body in terms of a head of government are in a difficult position of navigating their local realities in the context of this multilateral agency. You look at the issue that Grenada had the other day with a radar request and so, the vulnerability of the Caribbean region has always been the ability of larger states to come in and to pick us off one by one, because we have never been able to collectively address our issues. So Trinidad is clear we got security issues here, so we will do what we have to do for us, Barbados is saying something else and that is as a result of CARICOM never being able to fulfil the mandate of true regional integration and till now we are paying for it with the fractures,” the MP explained.

Walton-Desir stated that while there are emerging Caribbean leaders capable of navigating these challenges, the region still lacks sufficient cohesive leadership to manage the current geopolitical crisis effectively. “So the dream of regional integration continues to be under threat and it will take the Caribbean people, it will take the Caribbean leaders awhile to really develop some ability to navigate this skilfully, we unfortunately do not have leaders of the calibre;

prime minister Motley is probably the most closest we have to a Caribbean states person emerging in recent years and so it is going to be a challenge,” she said.

Last Wednesday, the United States seized an oil tanker just off the coast of Venezuela, an action confirmed by President Donald Trump.

The vessel had been sanctioned by the U.S., and Trump stated that the oil would be retained by U.S. authorities, according to Reuters reports. In response, the Venezuelan government accused the United States of “blatant theft” and described the seizure as “an act of international piracy.” The Venezuelan government said it would “defend its sovereignty, natural resources, and national dignity with absolute determination” and denounce the seizure of the tanker before international bodies.

The seizure marked the first known action against an oil tanker since the U.S. ordered a significant military build-up in the region. The U.S. has already carried out several strikes against suspected drug vessels, which has raised concerns among lawmakers and legal experts.

British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the tanker Skipper was believed to have been seized off Venezuela early on Wednesday.

Oil futures rose following news of the seizure.

After trading in negative territory, Brent crude futures rose 27 cents, or 0.4%, to settle at $62.21 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 21 cents, also 0.4%, to close at $58.46 per barrel.

Oil Minister can halt production over safety concerns - New PSA

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat The new Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) drafted by the government of Guyana (GoG) has implemented stringent safety regulations which now allow the minister responsible for petroleum to halt production over safety concerns.

Article 18.3 of the contract states, “If the Minister has, reasonable grounds, good reason to

believe that any works or facilities erected by the Contractor or any Petroleum Operations conducted by the Contractor are endangering or may endanger persons or the property of any person, or are causing or may cause pollution, or are harming or may harm wildlife or the environment to a degree inconsistent with the Act, the Environmental Protection Act, any

o t h e r a p p l i c a b l e l a w, t h i s Agreement and/or Best International Industry Standards and Practices, the Minister may require the Contractor to take remedial measures within such reasonable period as may be determined by the Government and to rectify any damage to the environment.”

It continues, “If the Minister determines it to be necessary, he may also require the Contractor to discontinue Petroleum Operations in whole or in part until the Contractor has taken such remedial measures or has repaired any damage caused.”

Article 18 outlines a suite of requirements to govern the conduct of petroleum operations offshore.

The contract makes it clear that the operator is mandated to take all steps necessary for the operations to be conducted in accordance with

laws, licenses, the agreement and international best practices.

The PSA requires operators to protect the environment and potentially affected communities; ensure the safety, health and welfare of persons engaged in petroleum operations and maintain all facilities, equipment and property in good and safe conditions.

Other safety regulations mandate oil companies to control the flow and prevent the waste or escape of petroleum, water or any product used in or derived from the processing of petroleum and remedy any damage caused to the environment in a timely manner. To date, two oil blocks have been awarded under the revised PSA. The first contract was signed with Total Energies, Qatar Energy and Petronas while the second was inked with Ghanaian offshore

explorer Cybele Energy Limitedboth for shallow water areas offshore Guyana.

Total Energies will operate Block S4 and Cybele will take charge of Block S7. Both blocks were auctioned during Guyana’s maiden bid round, launched by President Irfaan Ali in December 2022.

A total of 14 blocks were auctioned, however only eight of the areas attracted bids. In February this year, the Ministry of Natural Resources revealed that four PSAs with various companies were on the table to be signed this year from the auction. In addition to the agreement with the Total Energies-led consortium and Cybele Energy, contracts were also to be signed for the blocks S5 – International Group Investment Inc.; and S10 – International Group Investment Inc.

Norton it’s time to exit Leadership is ultimately judged not by intention, rhetoric, or personal loyalty, but by results. By that unforgiving but necessary standard, Aubrey Norton’s continued insistence on playing a frontline role in the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and the APNU coalition is no longer defensible. After presiding over one of the most crushing electoral defeats in the party’s history, Norton’s refusal to exit the stage gracefully is deepening internal fractures, eroding public confidence and risking further electoral irrelevance.

Since APNU’s decisive loss at the September 1 general and regional elections, Norton has maintained a curious posture, simultaneously retreating from Parliament while aggressively inserting himself into the public narrative. He opted not to return to the National Assembly, instead assigning parliamentary leadership to businessman Dr. Terrence Campbell. Yet, despite this deliberate distancing from parliamentary responsibility, Norton continues to dominate press conferences and media engagements.

The contradiction is glaring. If Parliament is now entrusted to a new team, why does Norton still feel compelled to be the chief public face of a party attempting to regroup after a historic defeat? What value does he believe he brings at this moment, particularly when his presence seems to reinforce, rather than repair, the damage done?

The public response has been telling. Comments following Norton’s recent media appearances have been scathing, not just from political opponents but from traditional supporters and ordinary citizens. The messaging rings hollow. The credibility is gone. And the optics of a leader clinging to relevance after overwhelming rejection at the polls are deeply unflattering.

Yet Norton remains defiant. He has repeatedly dismissed calls for his resignation, even as the party bleeds experienced and influential members. Only last week, he insisted that the steady stream of resignations from the PNCR has nothing to do with his leadership. He claims to have heard no dissatisfaction from the party’s top brass, an assertion that strains credulity given the public nature of many departures and the pointed criticisms accompanying them. Before the September elections and immediately after, a slate of senior PNCR figures and Members of Parliament including Jermaine Figueira, Amanza WaltonDesir, Shurwayne Holder, Mervyn Williams, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, Natasha Singh-Lewis, and Dawn HastingsWilliams resigned. Since then, the departures have continued. Former Region Two Chairman Prince Holder cited “irreconcilable differences with the current leadership” when he stepped down. Former Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine went further, delivering a blistering critique of the party’s direction under Norton.

Still, Norton maintains that these resignations are merely the grumblings of disappointed individuals denied parliamentary seats or council positions. This explanation may offer comfort to the leader, but it insults the intelligence of party members and the wider electorate. Veteran stalwarts do not abandon a political home lightly, nor do they risk reputations to settle petty grievances. When seasoned party figures walk away in succession, leadership not ambition is the common denominator.

The reality is unavoidable: Norton is the problem. And increasingly, even within PNCR circles, there is growing consensus that he cannot be part of the solution. The voters have already rendered their verdict. On September 1, they delivered the worst electoral performance for the PNCR since Independence in 1966—nearly 60 years ago. If that outcome does not demand accountability at the highest level, then the concept of leadership responsibility is meaningless. In democracies worldwide, leaders who preside over catastrophic defeats understand the signal.

They step aside not out of humiliation, but out of respect for the institution they lead and the future they claim to care about. Norton has chosen the opposite path: to linger, to

Fugitive offender DEAR EDITOR, I wish to thank Mr. Surujdai Juglall for his letter to the editor published in the December 15, 2025 edition of the Stabroek News under the caption “Mohamed’s conduct is inconsistent with the Attorney General’s definition of fugitivity.”

The gravamen of the letter is Mr. Juglall’s umbrage with my description of Mr. Azruddin Mohamed as a fugitive offender.

Based upon what I have seen elsewhere, Mr. Juglall

is not singular in his misapprehensions of that phrase.

Therefore, it is necessary that I set the public record straight.

My use of the term fugitive offender in describing Mr. Mohamed is directly referrable to the governing legislation on the matter: the Fugitive Offenders Act, Cap. 10:04.

The Long Title of the Act reads “An Act to make provision with respect to the extradition of fugitive offenders from and to

Guyana and for matters connected therewith.”

Section 2 of the Act defines a “fugitive offender” as “a person who is accused, or alleged to be unlawfully at large after conviction, of an extraditable offence committed within the jurisdiction of Guyana or any Commonwealth country or foreign territory and is or is suspected to be in any country or territory, other than the country or territory in which the offence was committed or

the person was convicted.” I have taken the liberty to underline the relevant words in the definition applicable to Mr. Mohamed, for easy reading. In short, it is the law that describes Mr. Mohamed as a fugitive offender. I sincerely hope that this brief note will now put the matter to rest.

We are not analysts. We are citizens with a calculator and a conscience. And we are screaming “Thief” THE SMOKING GUN: THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE Let’s strip away the lies.

Let’s compare what they built then, to what they want to build now. Then (The Original $13.3B Disaster): 9.4km of highway from scratch. Through forest and swamp. Building bridges,

moving mountains of earth, creating four lanes, medians, and shoulders on virgin land.

Cost per new lanekilometer: $354 Million. · Now (The $5B Heist): 4.2km of simple widening.

The roadbed is already there.

The bridges are already built. The hardest work is done. Just add a lane on each side. Extend the shoulders and widen the drains to accommodate the new lane.

Cost per new lanek i l o m e t e r : A S TA G G E R I N G $ 5 9 5 MILLION. Let that sink in. They want to charge you 68% MORE for every meter of a simple lane addition than they charged for building the entire highway from the dirt up. This isn’t inflation. This is extortion.

This project is a middle finger to every taxpayer, to every driver who dodges potholes on “Concussion Road.” It screams: “We control the money, we control the contracts, and you can’t stop us.” They have never been caught in a crosscomparison this blatant before. The original highway, decaying as we speak, provided the perfect cover. “It’s an emergency!” they cry. “We must expand!” they declare. And in the panic to cover their tracks, they didn’t even bother to make the new theft look plausible.

THIS IS A CRIME SCENE. TREAT IT LIKE ONE. We are not calling for an inquiry. We are calling for an Indictment.

WE, THE PEOPLE,

DEMAND: 1 . I m m e d i a t e Cancellation of this fraudulent $5B expansion contract. Not a pause.

2. A Foreign-Forensic Audit, conducted by an internationally reputable firm with subpoena power and anti-corruption prosecutors, on Both, the original $13.3B and this new $5B contract. Every invoice, every change order, every beneficiary.

3. Public Naming of All Beneficiaries. Publish the names of every company, every shareholder, and every intermediary awarded work on these projects. Let the sunlight disinfect this wound.

4. Legal Action. Where evidence of gross overpricing and contract fraud exists, the full force of the law must fall on the contractors and the government officials who approved this robbery.

abandonment of the Lobbying in America critical The Rosignol Ferry Stelling for Guyana’s interests DEAR EDITOR Much has been penned on government lobbying of Washington through a paid lobbyist of over US$65K monthly. I cannot comment on whether it is value for money. I read the lobbying firm has the highest connection with the President who makes policy, including foreign policy towards Venezuela, Guyana, and the Caribbean/Latin region. And right now, Guyana needs Washington to neutralise the threat from Maduro.

America works by lobbying. Guyana needs an effective (both paid and unpaid, voluntary) lobbying movement in Washington and states where Guyanese are concentrated as in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Chicago, etc. Only President Ali and VP Jagdeo would know the effectiveness of the lobbyist; unpublished information suggest that the firm has been very effective in achieving their objectives.

One really has to hand it to Jagdeo; he is a master politician and strategist, coming a long way since he left the Presidency in 2011.

The (PPP) government’s hiring of a lobbyist is astute, and its pursuit is a reversal of unsolicited advice proffered since the 1970s by a group of (freedom) activists based in USA. Politicians in Guyana blanked any suggestion from the diaspora on lobbying Washington which had favored the PNC until the collapse of communism in 1989.

Support groups affiliated with governments or opposition parties were never interested in lobbying Washington which was viewed by leftwing (socialist, communist)

politicians as imperialist and exploitative; Washington was blamed for toppling the democratic Jagan government, and as such the left wanted nothing to do with Washington. The left never understood concepts like American national interest or the significance of lobbying. And unless one actually studied (or read) American politics, one would not understand the critical importance of lobbying and why the US has seen the left as a threat to its national interests.

As an illustration, as a 17-year-old foreign student pursuing pre-medical studies (majoring in BioChemistry at City College of City University) from 1977, I had no clue about lobbying or national interests, not even about American politics. But I was a proJagan activist without understanding that his socialism was a threat to US interests. It was only after taking courses in American and international politics, I became familiar with how American government works and the relevance of lobbying and why USA would never allow a leftwing PPP socialist party, affiliated with the USSR and East bloc, to govern Guyana.

(Jagdeo did right to remove socialism from the PPP).

My colleague, Baytoram Ramharack made the transition from natural sciences to political science a few years before me as I wanted to finish my BS in Bio-Chem before making the switch to Political Science in graduate school for the Masters and Doctorate taking courses on lobbying. Both of us were influenced by Vassan and Rennie Ramracha, theoretician Indian

nationalists and political science majors, to switch majors to provide us with requisite skills to champion (pioneer) a struggle for restoration of democratic governance in Guyana.

Ramharack quickly mastered international relations, national interests, and how the American political system worked, and he and Vassan set the ball rolling on informally lobbying American politicians through letter writing, rallies, protests, etc.

They did the writing of flyers and I the publishing and organising for distribution.

Chuck Mohan, a student senior to us by a few years, and his ACG colleagues, also did a lot of organising and lobbying of the left for PPP. Ramharack and I wrote to politicians (Members of Congress, Jimmy Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., heads of parties, etc.) about rights violations in Guyana. Mike Persaud also wrote several MoC about fraudulent elections. I authored or edited several letters to President Reagan, Vice President Bush and Members of Congress for Dr Vishnu Bandhu who made an immense contribution in the struggle for free and fair election and whose work was never recognised or rewarded. His contribution to the restoration of democracy through his letter writing, his newspaper, organising rallies, fundraisers for politicians, hosting events at his business, etc., have gone

unreported and un-noticed.

He spent millions of dollars in USA to fund the struggle.

He is deserving of Guyana’s highest honors or medal of freedom as have a few others.

The US government functions on lobbying (a process of influencing MoC and or the White House and or lawmakers around USA) on decision or policymaking that benefits the group or granting favoritism to c e r t a i n o rg a n i s a t i o n s , businesses, foreign governments, etc. Lobbying takes a variety of forms including face to face meetings, raising funds for and campaigning for the legislator ’s re-election, hiring lobbyists, paying speaker’s fees (that is restricted of late), etc.

Lobbying can be voluntary (grass roots) as several of us (like Mike Persaud, Vishnu Bandhu, Ramharack, Ravi Dev, Vassan and Rennie Ramracha, myself, and Chuck, Arjune Karshan, Mel Carpen, Raj Singh, among others post collapse of communism) have done for Guyana during the struggle for the restoration of democracy, or on tariff, etc.

Where we failed to influence MoC, the White House, and the two major political parties, we appealed to Indian nationals for assistance. They were most helpful in influencing MoC, Bush, and Democratic Party to take a stand on Guyana authoritarianism. It was the lobbying by Guyanese in USA and others that (Continued on 16)

DEAR EDITOR, It is with deep concern and frustration that I address an issue that exemplifies the vindictive and self-serving nature of politics in our country, as demonstrated by some who masquerade as public servants while turning their backs on the most vulnerable among us.

In 2017, the Coalition Government introduced a vital initiative to ease the burden on schoolchildren, pensioners, and commuters travelling between the Rosignol and New Amsterdam ferry stellings.

This initiative involved the acquisition of two water taxis, funded by taxpayers at a cost of approximately $20 million. The service was well received and quickly became an essential mode of transportation for residents, while also providing income-earning opportunities for individuals in the Rosignol and New Amsterdam communities.

Following the change in government in August 2020, the PPP/C Administration ceased the operation of the water taxis. After a prolonged period of silence and public inconvenience, the vessels were briefly reinstated in May 2022, creating the misleading impression that the service was a new PPP/C initiative, rather than the continuation of a Coalition Government project financed by the people of Guyana. This political posturing did nothing to ensure the longterm sustainability of a service paid for by taxpayers, and the water taxis have once again fallen into disuse.

During a recent visit to the Rosignol Stelling, I was dismayed to observe its complete abandonment.

What was once a bustling transit point now resembles a ghost town, with no visible operations between the two stellings. Commuters who relied heavily on the water taxis continue to suffer in silence. A regular user confirmed that the vessels have been out of commission for some time, yet neither the Ministry nor the Government has offered any explanation or update to the public.

It is time for the Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill, to stop hiding behind political rhetoric and provide clear answers to the following questions: 1. What specific circumstances led to the water taxis, purchased with taxpayers’ money, once again being taken out of service?

2. Where are the water taxis currently located, and where are their engines being stored and secured?

3. When will the people of Rosignol and New Amsterdam see the full and permanent restoration of the water taxi service they paid for?

4. In the absence of water taxi operations between the Rosignol and New Amsterdam ferry stellings, what activities—if any—are currently taking place at these locations, and what is the approximate monthly cost to taxpayers to maintain facilities that appear to be idle? Building Courage: Where Bravery Meets Intelligence in Everyday Life DEAR EDITOR Courage is often misunderstood. Popular culture paints it as a dramatic, fearless act performed in extraordinary moments—on battlefields, in burning buildings, or under blinding spotlights.

Yet in daily life, courage is far quieter, more deliberate, and far more demanding.

True courage is not the absence of fear; it is the disciplined choice to act wisely despite fear, guided by intelligence, values, and conscience.

What It Takes to Build Courage Courage is not an inherited trait reserved for a few. It is a skill that can be cultivated over time through intention and practice.

First, courage begins with clarity of values. When individuals are clear about what they stand for—honesty, fairness, d i g n i t y , o r compassion—decisions become anchored. Values act

as an internal compass, providing direction when external pressures attempt to push us off course. Without this foundation, courage easily collapses under convenience or fear.

Second, courage requires self-awareness.

Understanding one’s fears, biases, and limitations allows for honest selfassessment. Fear unexamined tends to control b e h a v i o r ; f e a r acknowledged can be managed. Intelligent courage does not deny risk—it evaluates it.

Third, courage is strengthened through small, consistent acts. Speaking up respectfully in a meeting, refusing to participate in d i s h o n e s t y, d e f e n d i n g someone who is unfairly treated, or choosing truth over popularity are everyday exercises that build moral muscle. Like physical strength, courage grows with repetition.

F i n a l l y, c o u r a g e

demands resilience. Acting with integrity often comes w i t h consequences—criticism, isolation, or loss of o p p o r t u n i t y. B u i l d i n g courage means accepting that discomfort is sometimes the price of self-respect.

The Role of Intelligence Courage without intelligence can become recklessness; intelligence without courage can become paralysis. The two must work together.

Intelligence allows us to assess context, understand consequences, and choose the most effective way to act.

It asks: When is the right time to speak? What is the best method? Who needs to be involved? Intelligent courage seeks solutions, not just statements.

In daily life, this balance shows up when a parent sets firm but compassionate boundaries, when an employee raises ethical concerns through proper channels, or when a citizen

challenges injustice with facts rather than fury.

Intelligence tempers emotion, ensuring that courage builds rather than destroys.

Courage in Everyday Application In workplaces, courage and intelligence combine when individuals refuse to normalise unethical practices, even when silence would be easier. In families, they appear when difficult conversations are held with honesty and empathy. In communities, they surface when people stand against corruption, discrimination, or abuse of power—not

impulsively, but persistently and wisely. Perhaps most importantly, courage applies inwardly. It takes courage to admit mistakes, to change long-held beliefs, to seek help, or to walk away from environments that compromise one’s dignity.

These acts rarely make headlines, yet they shape character and society in profound ways.

A Quiet Force That Shapes Society History shows that societies do not advance solely through intelligence or power, but through individuals willing to align courage with wisdom.

Progress is driven by ordinary people who decide that convenience cannot outweigh conscience. In an age marked by noise, pressure, and moral shortcuts, courage guided by intelligence is more necessary than ever. It reminds us that while fear is universal, so too is the capacity to rise above it—thoughtfully, responsibly, and with purpose. The white sugar refinery will help restore economic stability to Wales and nearby communities Stakeholders including GAWU, GMSA, PSC, GOINVEST, and the Guyana government welcomed GAICO Construction’s CEO Komal Singh announcing a joint venture with SUCRO Ltd to build a white sugar refinery at Wales, named Demerara Sugar Refinery Inc. (DSRI).

The sugar labour union, GAWU expresses optimism about the new project. The union has consistently supported the establishment of a sugar refinery, with a feasibility being conducted in the late 1990s. The sugar refinery idea was among the proposals presented by GAWU to the APNU+AFC government in 2016.

Furthermore, GAWU s a y s ; “ g o v e r n m e n t ’s ongoing efforts to revitalise the Skeldon sugar estate suggest that sufficient sugar production could meet local refinery demands while enabling GuySuCo to diversify its remaining brown sugar output into value-added products such as packaging and sugar sticks. The sugar refinery

represents an opportunity for the industry to advance within the value chain.”

Finance Minister Hon Dr Ashni Singh notes that the DSRI project affirms the P P P C ’s “ l o n g - t e r m commitment to the sugar industry.” He adds that this project aligns with the Caricom’s food security initiative of reducing the region’s food imports by 25% by 2030. However, some critics are skeptical and focused instead on G u y S u C o ’s c u r r e n t production issues, often lacking full knowledge of the deal and its broader impact.

The sugar refinery, costing approximately $(US) 20 million, is fully funded by Mr. Komal S i n g h ’s G A I C O Construction and US-based SUCRO Ltd. The central government provided no funding, only an enabling environment for this private venture..

It was reported that the former PNCR-led government prepared a draft position paper on a “New

Sustainable Business Model (NSBM),” which included the idea of a white sugar refinery. However, a senior GAWU official states that they are unaware of such a document. The NSBM is still a concept, but any proposal with significant potential for regional and national development should be considered by all stakeholders.

The joint venture (sugar refinery) once operational can process up to 100 metric tonnes of white sugar. Mr. Komal Singh says: “the priority is to procure excess brown sugar from Guyana and Jamaica. It is only if these suppliers cannot meet the needs of DSRI that we will turn to Brazil, with which SUCRO Ltd already has an existing business relationship.”

New Demerara River Bridge declared structurally sound despite surface irregularities The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) has assured the public that the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge remains structurally sound and fully safe for use, following continuous monitoring of settlement observation points along the bridge.

According to the

ministry, all monitoring data confirm that no abnormal settlement has occurred in the bridge’s foundations.

Engineers have found the structure to be stable, reliable, and operating within all safety parameters, dispelling concerns about the bridge’s integrity.

Addressing public

discussion surrounding pavement undulations on the side span of the main bridge, the MoPW explained that detailed technical investigations revealed these irregularities are confined to the asphalt surface layer. The issue, officials said, stems from localised variations in surface flatness during the

pavement construction process and has no impact on the bridge’s structural performance or load-bearing capacity.

The ministry further clarified that a separate pavement undulation near the east approach bridge abutment is linked to the unique nature of transition zones where road embankments meet rigid concrete structures. ‘BIRTH RATE SLUMPS’ - as registered births down nearly 20% in five years The number of registered births in Guyana has steadily declined over the last five years, falling by almost 20 per cent between 2020 and 2024, according to data released by the Bureau of Statistics.

Figures sourced from the General Register Office (GRO) show that registered births decreased from 15,760 in 2020 to

12,681 in 2024, representing a 19.5 per cent reduction over the five-year period.

In 2021, registered births stood at 15,301, followed by 14,997 in 2022. The downward trend continued in 2023 with 14,629 births recorded, before dropping more sharply in 2024. Overall, a total of 73,368 births were registered between 2020 and 2024.

Govt. increasing ferry trips, capacity to ease Christmas traffic

inister of Public Works Juan Edghill on Sunday said the government is increasing ferry trips and vessel capacity to manage the expected surge in traffic and cargo movement during the Christmas season, particularly on ‘high-demand’ routes.

Via a social media post on his ministry’s page, Minister Edghill stated that trips will be rolled out to accommodate more passengers, with ferries shifting from operating one trip daily to two trips on major routes.

“We are doing this in a touch-and-go manner. Persons who desire to get their goods, materials, and supplies in for Christmas, please track the transport website, because once the boat gets in and offloads, it will reload and come down.”

He explained that the MV Malali and MV Makouria will also assist in transporting supplies in and out of the islands of Wakenaan and Leguan. The new MV ARIS IV is also set to join the fleet by Friday latest to provide more support to areas like Bartica.

“That new boat could carry almost twice the amount of vehicles that any one of these other boats was carrying. It could carry about 80 vehicles.”

Looking to the future, the minister revealed that improvements for passengers are set for next year, such as internet access on board the vessels. “Early in the new year, latest, for all of our vessels, we’ll ensure that passengers and crew members have access to Wi-Fi, whether they use Starlink or WifiGY,” the minister added. International candidates The world of global politics is like a big, noisy room. The largest and richest countries are the loudest voices. Its easy for a smaller country to get lost in the crowd.

So, how does a smaller country make itself heard?

One of the most effective ways is by having its citizens elected or appointed to top jobs in international organisations. This isn’t just about a personal achievementits a strategy for the whole nation.

Guyana is a perfect example of this. Look at our h i s t o r y. S i r S h r i d a t h Ramphal became SecretaryG e n e r a l o f t h e Commonwealth. Mohamed Shahabuddeen served as a Judge at the International Court of Justice. Rudy Insanally was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly.

In each case, a Guyanese person stepped onto the world stage. The international spotlight shone

on them, but it also shone on the country that produced them. Their success boosted Guyanas global reputation and proved that our nation, though small, produces leaders of the highest quality. Its a smart and peaceful way for a small state to have a bigger influence. We don’t enlarge our presence with size or power, but with the talent and character of our people.

It is the same with our sportsmen and sportswomen who enjoy international acclaim. They put us on the map. Guyana is better known because of its fine cricketers, both male and female. Our nations cricketers, through sheer brilliance and an unmistakable style of play, have stitched the name of Guyana firmly onto the map of world sport. From the legendary Lance Gibbs, whose off-spin mesmerised batsmen and made him the first bowler to claim 300 Test wickets, to the modern-

day mastery of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose unorthodox stance and relentless concentration became a global symbol of Guyanese resilience, our players have consistently performed at the pinnacle.

Their achievements on the storied grounds of Lord’s, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and across the Caribbean have not merely been personal triumphs; they have been national advertisements, broadcasting a story of excellence from a small nation.

However, as we push for more Guyanese in these top jobs, there is one very important condition. The person chosen must be known to the people of Guyana. It doesn’t matter if they live here or abroad.

What matters is that they have a real connection to our country. Guyanese people should recognise their name and their story. They should carry our experiences, our

Therefore, to ensure this strategy truly serves the national interest and strengthens the vital link between the leader and the populace, Guyana would be wise to establish clear, fixed criteria for future nominations. Such criteria should go beyond professional qualifications to include demonstrated, ongoing engagement with Guyanese societywhether through public service, cultural contributions, or visible participation in national discourseensuring that any nominee is not

merely a name on a passport, but a figure whose accomplishments resonate authentically with the people whose flag they will carry onto the global stage.

We should actively support more Guyanese candidates for international leadership roles. It is a proven way to raise our profile and contribute to the world. But we must choose candidates who are genuinely a part of uswhose success feels like a victory for all of Guyana.

We do witness the constant parade of envoys each tirelessly championing their nation’s candidate for a coveted post. It is a quiet, persistent campaign waged in international diplomacy.

Guyana must learn to play this game. When other nations come to lobby for their leaders to have a place in the sun, we too must be prepared to shine a light on our own. This is not mere ambition; it is a necessary assertion of our sovereign value in the global c o m m u n i t y. We m u s t

marshal our diplomatic resources, articulate the unique strengths of our proposed sons and daughters, and ensure that when the deliberations are held, the distinguished name of Guyana is not merely present in the room, but is spoken with respect and serious consideration for the high office it seeks to fill.

When we get this right, these high-level posts become more than just jobs.

They become outposts of Guyanese excellence, allowing our small nation to have a wise and respected voice in the world’s biggest conversations.

ever, ever, would the thought have come.

Not relative to G u y a n a ’s P r e s i d e n t Mohamed Irfaan Ali. Probably a great number of other Guyanese, but not Dr. Ali. Would any Guyanese still in possession of their

senses-the right ones-ever harbor the thought that Pres.

Ali has some resemblance to torturers straight out of the pages of the Dark Ages, then later Middle Ages. Someone else, perhaps; but not Dr. Ali. But why is he traveling dangerously near to that grim path, that reminds of

dungeons and cruel forces, plus the tools they applied on captives, the helpless and hapless? It’s worth closer examination.

Oil is held aloft. Why not? Mention Guyana, and oil is mentioned in breathless torrents. So, when voices extol the glories of Guyana

and its oil, there ought to be hands that hold money aloft also. It is where Pres. Ali should be, thankful that he has the role to deliver to the Guyanese people, and to enrich their lives, even if only for a week or two. But he is not doing so. Oil without benefit to the people is not oil at all, has no meaning whatsoever. Cash is a tangible, immediate benefit. PhD or no PhD, Dr. Ali knows as much. Roads have value, so also subsidies.

But there is nothing like a dollar in the hand to make a man feel like the king of the world, and a woman the queen of her castle.

Regardless of how humble their abode, circumstances.

Because of all this, which Irfaan Ali as citizen, as man, as national leader, knows, why then is he playing this cat-and-mouse game with the res.

Guyanese people-real ones, poor ones, down-inthe-dirt ones-and subjects them to fading optimism, rapidly intensifying despair?

In Pres. Ali, no Guyanese should see one reminiscent of a hostage taker, then a torturer, who uses his high position to take advantage of them, play with their minds?

First, there was going to be a cash grant, and not just one. Straight out of Pres.

Ali’s mouth on the first day of this now almost over year.

From early January to late in

August, it was the short step that pushed Pres. Ali closer to the abyss. He was clever this time to add a qualifier.

“If you behave yourself….”

If the people behaved themselves and voted for the PPP, there will be good things coming. A cash grant.

The money that belongs to the people, Pres. Ali held that as a ransom demand over the simple, submissive heads of Guyanese.

Captive Guyanese not just in Eccles, but with echoes from there bouncing across 83,000 square miles.

Guyanese being held to ransom by their own. Do this, and that will come. It was what the code words of “if you behave yourself meant….”

P e r s o n a l l y, i t w a s a combination of a low quid pro quo and campaign financing turned on its head.

Do something (vote PPP) for something (get cash grant).

In terms of the reverse campaign financing of Excellency Ali, I see it this way: donate vote to the PPP, and a bag full of cash would come the people’s way. It was the second time, by my count, that Pres. Ali made a firm commitment about cash grant(s) to Guyanese; except that he added that conditioner of a certain kind of behaviour expected.

Voting.

From the time that Dr. Ali held that sword over the heads of Guyanese, I found

myself thinking that Guyana went back to medieval times.

Whether so or not is beyond the scope of this effort.

Nevertheless, this much can be said with conviction.

The people heard Pres.

Ali in August and did their part. The PPP is back in the corridors of power, and Irfaan Ali laughing all the way to State House.

Respectfully, he has to fulfill his part of the bargain he made (if you behave). Even more respectfully, he hasn’t.

Pres. Ali has toyed with Guyanese and tortured them re the cash grant that is now overdue. It is the middle of December and he plays these unpresidential games with the well-behaved people.

Like a cat with a mouse under its control and paws, such is the state that Guyana’s Irfaan Ali has the Guyanese people. There shouldn’t even be a discussion about if or when a cash grant will be. A cash grant should have been announced and in full swing already.

The new side of Pres. Ali complements all those other sides of his that finds him direly wanting.

T&T to allow US military aircraft to transit airports ( Tr i n i d a d E x p r e s s ) Government has confirmed that it will permit United States military aircraft to transit local airports in the coming weeks, as part of ongoing bilateral security cooperation between the two countries.

In a media release issued on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs said approvals had been granted for the movements, which the United States has described as logistical in nature.

According to the ministry, the aircraft transits will facilitate supply replenishment and routine personnel rotations and do not signal any change in Trinidad and Tobago’s defence posture.

The ministry stressed that the decision falls within long-standing security and defence arrangements between Port of Spain and Wa s h i n g t o n , a i m e d a t strengthening regional safety, security and stability.

According to the ministry, through this partnership, Trinidad and Tobago has benefited from joint military training exercises, improved surveillance capabilities, including the installation of

an advanced radar system, and collaborative operations that have led to the seizure of millions of dollars’ worth of illegal narcotics.

Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers said the government maintains close engagement with the United States Embassy in Trinidad and To b a g o a n d r e m a i n s committed to cooperation in the interest of national and regional security.

Prime Minister Kamla P e r s a d - B i s s e s s a r, t h e ministry stated, has reaffirmed the government’s support for collaboration with the United States, particularly in efforts to combat transnational crime and enhance public safety across the Caribbean.

The ministry also noted that US support to Trinidad and Tobago has extended beyond security cooperation to include educational initiatives, school equipment donations and infrastructure enhancement projects.

No-case submission held against cop in Quindon Bacchus killing Police Sergeant Dameion McLennon, who was charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice in the murder investigation of Quindon Bacchus, has been freed after a no-case submission was upheld due to the prosecution’s failure to present sufficient evidence.

McLennon, 35, of Lot 175 ‘B’ Field, South Sophia, Georgetown, first appeared in court on July 5 via Zoom before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was jointly charged with Lance Corporal Thurston Simon, 24, of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara.

The two ranks were accused of perverting the course of justice by allegedly providing false information to investigators during the probe into Bacchus’ death.

The charge against McLennon stated that on June 30, 2022, at Eve Leary, Georgetown, he willfully attempted to obstruct the course of justice by giving false information to police during the investigation.

In August 2022, after spending more than one month on remand, McLennon was granted $250,000 bail by acting Chief Justice Roxane George in the high court.

On Monday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore upheld a nocase submission made on McLennon’s behalf and dismissed the charge of attempting to obstruct the

course of justice. According to McLennon’s attorney, Bernard Da Silva, the prosecution failed to present any evidence to support the charge. “There was absolutely no evidence in support of the charge. I could not submit on the evidence because there wasn’t any,” Da Silva said, noting that the submission was made orally.

The ruling comes more than a month after former police lance corporal

Kristoff De Nobrega was freed of the murder charge related to Bacchus’ death.

High Court Judge Gino Persaud, sitting at the Demerara High Court, upheld a no-case submission presented by De Nobrega’s attorney, George Thomas.

Quindon Bacchus was reportedly shot multiple times on June 10, 2022, allegedly by De Nobrega during what police claimed was a sting operation at Haslington, East Coast Demerara. Bacchus, who was injured in the incident, was rushed to hospital where he later died while receiving treatment. A post-mortem examination revealed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. De Nobrega was charged with murder, while McLennon and Simon were charged with obstructing the course of justice. De Nobrega has since been freed, while Lance Corporal Thurston Simon remains on remand in relation to the matter.

2.4% decrease in serious crime recorded in ‘A’ Division - McBean Deputy Commissioner of Police Simon McBean.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a 2.4 % decrease in serious crimes when compared to 2024, Deputy Commissioner of Police Simon McBean, Commander Regional Division 4A. McBean was at the time addressing the Regional Division 4A’s annual Christmas Luncheon and end-of-year award ceremony.

“If we look at the broader picture over the last five years, the transformation is staggering. Since 2020, serious crime in this division has fallen by more than 76%. We have moved from 836 recorded serious crimes at this time in 2020 to just 200 to date in 2025,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

He noted that the Force’s success is rooted on three strategic pillars, foundational policing: Reassurance, deterrence, and strong leadership; technological integration: Utilising smart cameras, facial recognition, drone patrols, and LCD monitoring—our “eyes in the sky” and community partnership: The backbone of our success remains the interaction between the police and the public.

McBean said while the numbers are positive, “one serious crime is still one too many.” “Public perception often lags behind data, and the fear of crime remains a challenge.

Moving forward, our primary goal is to ensure that the safety reflected in our statistics is a safety truly felt by every citizen in their daily lives,” he said.

Further, the divisional commander noted that in relation to traffic, there has been a 3% increase in general accidents but a 24% decrease in fatal accidents.

“This is a testament to our traffic department’s hard work in saving lives,” he said while noting that while there has been operational success, it is important to look at the number police ranks involved.

McBean said that Regional Division 4A started 2025 with a strength of 596 police officers and is concluding the year with 582.

“The year was not without its personnel challenges. We lost 14 ranks to dismissal, 6 to retirement, one to withdrawal, and we pause to remember one colleague who passed away this year. Furthermore, 7 ranks were charged and placed before the courts during 2025, reminding us of the high standards of integrity we must uphold. We also navigated health challenges, with the Region accumulating a total of 3,665 days of sick leave,” he disclosed.

Notwithstanding, he said there has been immense reason for celebration due to the elevation of several ranks. Four hundred and twenty-five ranks within this division were promoted in 2025.

“This massive investment in your careers is a clear sign that your hard work and commitment to the state do not go unnoticed,” he said while thanking President Irfaan Ali for providing the necessary support to the police force.

McBean said despite the changes in his division’s strength, “productivity remained high.” “This year, you investigated over 16,500 reports, resulting in 3,501 criminal charges, and our traffic department brought over 5,666 persons before the court for violations. We also successfully removed 28 illegal firearms and seized over 65kg of cannabis and 18g of cocaine,” he said.

Moreover, he said there was an 18.75% decrease in anticrime patrols due to resource constraints—an issue that will be fully rectified in the first quarter of 2026.

“We still managed to conduct over 28,000 total patrols and 435 community outreaches,” he said.

PAHO launches roadmap to improve blood pressure control and save lives The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has launched the new HEARTS Quality Framework, a practical guide published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas, which countries can immediately use to enhance hypertension and cardiovascular risk management, prevent heart attacks and strokes, and deliver better care through primary health care within their communities.

In the Americas, heart disease and strokes claim more than 2.2 million lives each year, and many of the victims are people in their most productive years. High

blood pressure—known as the “silent killer”—is the leading risk factor, affecting nearly four in ten adults across the region. Despite the availability of affordable and effective treatments, only one in three people with hypertension have their condition under control.

“Hypertension remains the world’s deadliest health threat, but also one of the most manageable,” said Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, Director of PAHO. “This framework is not just another policy d o c u m e n t — i t ’s t h e playbook already saving lives in thousands of community health clinics. If countries adopt and scale it

up, we can prevent millions of heart attacks and strokes over the next decade.”

T h e n e w H E A RT S Quality Framework translates real-world experiences into a tested blueprint for overcoming barriers that keep millions from getting the care they need. These include inaccurate blood pressure measurements due to outdated equipment, limited availability of essential medicines, suboptimal treatments, and unnecessary monthly visits to renew prescriptions.

H EA RTS in th e Americas is the world’s most extensive adaptation of the

World Health Organisation’s (WHO) global HEARTS initiative and is now active in 33 countries, reaching nearly 10,000 primary care facilities, with more than six million people managed through standardised treatment protocols. Where fully implemented, six in ten patients achieve blood pressure control — almost double the regional average.

This framework turns these proven successes into a structured model that any country can adopt and tailor to its needs. It lays out concrete strategies, such as mandating the use of reliable, automated blood pressure monitors; ensuring

a steady supply of quality medicines at affordable prices through pooled procurement; enabling multi-month prescriptions; and empowering trained nurses to adjust medication doses. It also proposes simple monthly monitoring tools so that healthcare providers can track patient outcomes and make necessary adjustments to care.

Combined, these strategies support the “8080-80 target” for blood pressure control: 80% of people with hypertension are diagnosed, 80% of those diagnosed are treated, and 80% of those treated are

achieving blood pressure control. “Reaching this goal could prevent more than 400,000 deaths and 2.4 million hospitalisations by 2030 in the Americas,” explained Dr Pedro Orduñez, the corresponding author and PAHO Senior Advisor for Cardiovascular Disease.

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) have issued an appeal to its customers to inform the company of any increase to their electricity consumption for the holiday season.

The power company said the notification is extended to residential, commercial and industrial customers in accordance with Sections 8.1 and 42 of the Standard Terms and Conditions (STC) for Electric Services.

Section 8.1 Service Changes says that customers shall give the company reasonable prior written notice of any increase in service requirements including any increase in expected energy consumption. This is important in enabling the company to determine whether or not it can supply the revised service without changes to its facilities.

In keeping with the new regulations, specifically Section 42 of the STC, the power company will advise the customer of the time required to facilitate the increase in power consumption.

“Primary health care based on standardised clinical pathways, reliable medicines, team-based care, and quality-improvement tools, can generate a life-saving impact for millions.”

As a result, Walton-Desir said FGM will be advocating for a 15-year residency requirement before an indi-

vidual can qualify for naturalisation. “We have got to increase our naturalisation requirement, its five years, we will be pushing for it to be put to 15 years, because you must live here for 15 years , you must establish yourself, you must have a system of vetting that is community-based,” she explained.

Defending the proposed requirement, Walton-Desir emphasised that such requirements can be made possible. “When you look at other countries, for example Bermuda, it has a 15 to 20 year window, you look at what we tout that we are going to be the new Dubai, well you got to be there for a minimum a of 30 years, so in some cases it’s not even possible,” she said.

She clarified that the proposal is not intended to prevent CARICOM nationals or

other foreigners from living and working in Guyana, but rather to restrict participation in national elections to Guyanese citizens. “We are saying that you are not going to be participating in our elections, you are not going to determine the course of this country, Guyanese will do that.

There are more Guyanese living outside of Guyana than in Guyana at the moment so our focus has to be preserving the privilege of Guyanese citizenship for our children, our children’s children and for those who will come along the line in the future,” WaltonDesir said.

She added that FGM will push for a comprehensive review of the vetting process, including the removal of what she described as excessive ministerial discretion in granting citizenship. “The citizenship process must be rulesbased,” Walton-Desir as-

serted. She argued that the current system allows too much discretion, which she claimed could lead to abuse.

“Where there is heavy ministerial discretion, there is a great probability of that being abused, and that is something we will be pushing strenuously to change,” she said. She warned that failure to act could have long-term consequences for Guyana’s identity and security.

“If we don’t do that, in two years, what will be the Guyanese identity and culture?” she asked, raising concerns about the potential infiltration of foreign agents into local governance structures.

“These things have happened historically in other countries and we will be negligent if we do not look and learn the lesson and bring them and apply them here,” Walton-Desir stated.

GPL said that while these changes may seem routine, they can substantially affect the distribution network.

Over time, transformers can become overloaded resulting in frequent outages or reduced service quality within communities.

To this end, GPL encouraged all customers to contact

(or Indian Caribbean) grass roots organisation lobbying any level of government in America; there never was although there are African Caribbean and Indian lobbying groups.

There have been organisations (like the ones I belonged to) that informally have lobbied various levels of government and

lawmakers on policies that would benefit the Guyanese American community and Guyana.

We still appeal to politicians on trade and on the Maduro threat without recognition from Georgetown.

The government is commended for hiring a lobbyist. It should encourage Guyanese Americans to

launch a (non-partisan, nonparty affiliated) lobbying organisation, even fund it with an office, to champion the interests of Guyana and the American based diaspora. It will be money well spent as both the diaspora and Guyana would be beneficiaries.

ICC rejects Israeli bid to block Gaza war crimes investigation The decision comes amid mounting international pressure over the humanitarian toll of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza (AL-JAZEERA) The appeals chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has rejected one of Israel’s legal challenges seeking to block an investigation into its actions in the genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, dealing a blow to Israel’s efforts to derail the case.

In their decision issued on Monday, judges refused to overturn a lower court decision allowing the ICC prosecutor to investigate alleged crimes in Israel’s war on Gaza following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The decision clears the way for the continuation of t h e c o u r t ’s P a l e s t i n e investigation, which led to the issuance of arrest warrants in November last year for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Israel does not recognise

the jurisdiction of the Hague-based court and has repeatedly denied committing war crimes in Gaza.

The ICC had also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Ibrahim al-Masri, but later withdrew it after credible reports of his death.

The appeal focused on whether the ICC prosecutor was required to issue a fresh notification to Israel before investigating events that took place after October 7, 2023. Israel argued that the post-October 7 assault on Gaza constituted a new situation, triggered by additional referrals submitted to the court by seven other countries since November 2023, including South Africa, Chile and Mexico.

Judges rejected that argument, ruling that the original notification issued in 2021 – when the ICC formally opened its investigation into alleged crimes in occupied Palestine – already covered later events. They said no new

Despite Guyana’s rapid ascent as a major oil producer, the lived reality for many citizens tells a far less celebratory story. The cost of living continues to climb relentlessly, squeezing households already struggling to keep pace with rising food prices, transportation costs, rent, and utilities.

For ordinary Guyanese, the promise of oil wealth has yet to translate into meaningful relief at the supermarket or the market stall.

Government assurances that prosperity would “trickle down” now ring hollow as wages lag behind inflation and disposable incomes shrink.

As Christmas approaches, many families are holding on to a familiar hope that the state will honour its promise of a Christmas cash grant to cushion the seasonal financial strain.

That hope, however, reflects a deeper problem.

In an oil-rich nation, citizens should not be depending on one-off handouts to survive festive seasons. The true test of leadership lies in delivering sustained cost-of-living relief, not temporary gestures timed for political comfort.

Daniels confirms all systems ready for GBA National Open Boxing Championships National Coach of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Lennox Daniels, has assured that all necessary systems are firmly in place for the staging of the National Open Boxing Championships, scheduled for December 19–21 at the National Gymnasium.

According to the GBA in a release, the three-day

tournament represents the association’s final statutory event for the year and is expected to attract the country’s leading gyms and top amateur boxers, all competing for the prestigious title of national champion in their respective weight categories.

“Everything is in place for this weekend. We are in

the process of confirming all participating gyms, but so far, almost all are on board,” Daniels stated.

The veteran coach further confirmed that the nation’s elite talent will be on display, noting that the championships represent the pinnacle of local competition.

Run over 2,000 meters on soft turf, the Group 1 feature was the centerpiece of the Founder’s Meeting and delivered a landmark success for all connections involved.

The Linneo de Paula Machado Grand Prix, named in honour of one of Brazil’s most innovative and passionate turf enthusiasts, annually brings together the elite of Brazilian racing. This year’s renewal carried even greater significance, producing a series of firsts that underscored the magnitude of Galo White’s achievement.

From the moment the gates opened, Galo White did what he has become known for throughout his career, taking command immediately.

Breaking sharply, Galo White surged to the front within the opening meters, setting a controlled but confident pace under the guidance of reigning champion jockey João Vi c t o r. D e s p i t e t h e demanding soft turf, Galo White traveled smoothly,

asserting himself as the field swept past the Flamengo sector and into the heart of the contest.

Unlike some of his previous front-running performances, Galo White did not attempt to stretch the field early. Instead, he dictated the tempo with authority, keeping his rivals within striking distance while conserving enough energy for the decisive stages.

Lake A Trojan, Treasure Cartier, Vitruvian, Oderich, Nova Déli, Express Moon and Mexicano all remained in close attendance as the race unfolded, waiting for an opportunity to challenge.

Approaching the final bend, pressure mounted.

Express Moon began to advance along the rail, while Nova Déli and Vitruvian also showed intent. For a brief moment, it appeared that the leader could be vulnerable.

However, turning for home, Galo White demonstrated the maturity and class that have defined his recent form.

Responding instantly to João Victor’s cues, he found another gear and powered clear.

Express Moon, ridden by Leandro Henrique, eventually found racing room and mounted a strong late challenge, but the effort came too late. Galo White maintained his advantage to the line, scoring decisively in

at Gávea, and the third major title of his campaign following earlier successes in the Copa dos Campeões (G3 – Cidade Jardim) and the GP Almirante Tamandaré (G2 – Gávea).

Sunday’s result also represented a breakthrough moment for trainer Lênio Roberto Vieira, who secured his first Group 1 trophy.

Widely respected for his efficiency and attention to detail when handling high-

quality horses, Vieira’s achievement was a testament to years of dedication and tireless work alongside his team.

One new face in Berbice cricket board executives T

he Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) held its Annual General Meeting and BI Annual Election of Office Bearers on Sunday last at the Rose Hall Community Centre, East Canje, Berbice.

Incumbent President Dr Cecil Beharry was elected unopposed. Whilst there were some competition for the post of the three Vice Presidents. The outgoing three, David Black, Junior Blair and Qualis Winter were re-elected.

The Secretary remains Mahendra Algu. The new assist Secretary is retired Assistant Director of Prisons

and Former National Athlete, Neil Rudder.

Rovin Bahadur retains his position as Treasurer, while former assistant Secretary Ameer Rahaman is the new Assistant Treasurer.

Dr Beharry thanked the clubs for showing confidence in him and reelecting him as President.

He promised to do his best and help Berbice cricket to return to its previous past of glory.

The executive body is expected to meet shortly to appoint more executive members and the various committees.
