The Golden Jaguars’ Trenchant criticism of inconsistent performance Minister Lawrence

DEAREDITOR; The further a team or a player advances in a competition, the tougher the opponent becomes. Thus minimal mistakes and intensified preparations are essential towards achieving additional success. As a consequence, it came as no surprise to that Curacao ranked 152nd, which was once our whipping boys was able to inflict a 5-2 drubbing, over the perceivable “toothless Jaguars”, when the two teams clashed in a CFU qualifier, at the Ergilio Hato Stadium, on 01. 06. 16. Editor, from all indications the 5-1 mauling at the expense of the visiting Canadians under-23 Olympic squad, taught the coaching/technical staff of the 132nd ranked Guyana, virtually nothing. Please note that the Head Coach, Curacao, Patrick Kluivert, was a former Netherlands International who in 2014 was a member of the Dutch lineup coaching staff in Brazil, enroute to securing the bronze medal for their 3rd place finish. Of the three coaches over the 2 matches the Jaguars Head Coach, Bro Jamal Shabbaz, is way out of depth. While our very own Wayne “Wiggy” Dover is probably 10 paces behind. Until and unless our local coaches attend “quality overseas FIFA accredited courses to challenge their regional counterparts in CFU, the end result would be more devastating, further afield in CONCACAF. Additionally, a few local players should be seeking tryouts with professional teams in Venezuela. Take Cuba for instance, despite all the economical hardship and a 50 years old economic embargo imposed by Uncle Sam, despite it all, the Cubans with an extremely serious policy for football development, over 15 years ago, recruited a Colombian, Senor Penarol as their Head Coach. While Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, can’t be overlooked. Cause it what it may the Haitians with Gold Cup

participation under their belt, previously, is a representative of CFU/CONCACAF Copa Centenario, which kicked off in the USA, from June, 3 along with Jamaica. In the final analysis, “flowery speeches and sweet talk will not develop local football, but rather a complete metamorphosis, encompassing eliminating the Jurassic style of administrative leadership along with playing of Stone Age football.” This statement was made by a former national player, turned coach the late Ashton “Chucker” Taylor, also former President, Pele FC at a General Council meeting, of the then Georgetown Football League, over 15 years ago. Fast forward to 2016 and what do we have for football as a “marketable product” towards acquiring much needed sponsorship? An 8 team Elite League with the top 3 teams securing goal differences of 35, 12 and 25 respectively; with the respective points of 40, 34 and 30 for Slingerz FC, Fruta Conquerors and Alpha United. Interestingly the 4th and 5th place, Pele and GDF with 17 points each are minus in single digits, -5 and -6 respectively. The 6th, 7th and 8th are all minus in double digits, of: -10, -25 and -25 accumulating 11 points, 6 points and 5 points respectively.

Shouldn’t this equation be an area of concern for the GFF’s Technical Department, moreover, in the absence of supportive League with almost double the amount of teams, drawn from all the associations? Likewise, a similar trend should follow suit with agelimit competitions from both male and female. In defeating USVI by a 7-0 margin, in a round 2 fixture, is nothing serious to rejoice about. Since the hosts ranked at 192, are 60 places below the Golden Jaguars. With round three scheduled for October, 3-11, strengthening the Coaching staff, with the acquisition of probably, Clyde “Oiler” Watson a former Guyanese National, whose previous coaching experience with the USA female Olympic and World Cup squads remains a significant asset to coaching at the national level locally. Additionally, two friendly internationals against quality opponents, along with a high profile training camp abroad. But finance is a major bugbear. While sports is no longer sports, rather serious business, attracting meaningful sponsorship locally to defray expenses, would more than likely be our “Achilles Heel”. Lester Sealey

DEAR EDITOR; Ms Volda Lawrence, Minister of the Human Services and Social Protection within recent weeks publicly condemned the high incidence of murders originating from domestic violence. Rightly so! However, a colossal problem that desperately deserves similar attention is the alarming murder rate racked up through brutal crime (street robberies, burglaries etc), a problem in which Ms Lawrence turns a blind eye. How inhumane! Ms Lawrence castigates domestic violence because she wants solutions and rightly so. However, Ms Lawrence lacks enthusiasm condemning the horrendous crime situation which engulfs this country. Criminals largely go after and kill people, but Ms Lawrence remains silent. Certainly, Ms Lawrence should have publicly denounced crime. This is damning testimony that Ms Lawrence lacks consistency managing the welfare of Guyanese. Editor, what can account for Ms Lawrence’s behavior? Categorically, Ms Lawrence is a partisan woman who shows no consideration, to say the least. Considering Ms Lawrence’s less than acceptable personality, I wonder why the APNU/PNC/AFC Government does not disavow such a person; then again an autocratic Government will never hold its friends and family culpable. Ms Lawrence’s behavior is untenable, particularly considering that domestic violence and crime are problems which come under the jurisdiction of her Ministry and they share common root cause which includes - lack of respect for others, poor parenting,

mental illness, substance of abuse etc. This then prompts the obvious and logical question: why Ms Lawrence chose to address domestic violence but not crime? Her inconsistency makes no sense and it is quite disturbing. Ms Lawrence is obviously handicapped by politics which leaves her in a pickle to explain such one sided actions. Ms Lawrence even rocks a thriving portfolio cataloging discriminatory utterances such as: the rape of a child is a family issue. Ms Lawrence may I ask: since when this is the case? Such one sided theatrics by Ms Lawrence plays into the definition of discrimination. Ms Lawrence needs to be reminded that every tax payer pays her salary irrespective of race/ethnicity or political affiliations. As such, Ms Lawrence owes it to all Guyanese to be impartial. It makes no sense that Government runs a Social Cohesion Ministry (Department). It is a waste of tax payer’s dollars. Given, Government’s discriminatory posture it is unlikely that it will ever respond to our pains, particularly those emanating from the heart wrenching crime situation. President Granger’s undemocratic refusal to release the names of criminals pardoned, effectively embolden criminals and drives up the crime rate. Government’s divisive behaviors need to be eschewed to allow us what we rightfully deserve as human beings. I urge my fellow Guyanese not to back down from our fight against a one sided Government. We must remember that we the people are endowed with the ultimate power to not return such a Government to power. And this we will do. Anita Singh

UK encourages Guyana to swiftly remove death penalty from law books “No circumstances under which its use is legitimate” – High Commissioner While most democracies have long banished the death penalty, Guyana is yet to make the move to do so. But with a new administration in play, there is hope that such would take place. The United Kingdom which has been supportive of the abolition of this form of punishment globally is therefore encouraging Guyana to do the same. This is according to UK High Commissioner, James Quinn. In an invited comment, Quinn said he would not only add that Guyana should move to remove the death penalty

from its law books but the UK would also encourage the nation to do so swiftly. The elimination of capital punishment is a subject matter that has seen arguments from various quarters which support and reject its use. However, with the increase of horrific acts of crime, some opine that perhaps, abolishing the death penalty should be put on pause. Kaieteur News had interviewed Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan on the matter and he made it clear that he is “completely against” the death sentence. Ramjattan even professed

that he has the statistics to show that the use of such an extreme form of punishment does nothing to stop crime. The Public Security Minister was reminded, however, of his Government’s stance in the National Assembly when it piloted the amended AntiMoney Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Bill which included the death penalty. The politician said that while he admits that was the case, he believes that such a form of punishment would “stop a certain set of people

who seek to bring terror on a group of persons or a nation”. He insists that in such circumstances, it would work. Ramjattan noted in the same breath nonetheless, that he is personally against the death penalty being used in the criminal justice system. Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo sought to stay on the fence with regard to this matter. He asserted that while he is against the death penalty, he believes that there are some cases where it is applicable. Jagdeo said that when it comes to certain heinous acts of violence against women and children, the death penalty is warranted. Jagdeo emphasized however that the coalition

administration seems to be speaking from two sides of its mouth when it comes to its stance on the death penalty. “One time they are saying they are against it, yet, unashamedly, they rush the AML Bill through the National Assembly without even giving it a second thought that they might look hypocritical, since it has the death penalty included in it as a form of punishment,” the Opposition Leader added. It must be noted, however, that not a single individual was executed during Jagdeo’s tenure as President, although some of the most heinous crimes were committed during this period, which included the ‘crime wave’ period of wanton

UK High Commissioner, James Quinn killings, executions and kidnappings. While Jagdeo holds the aforementioned view, the UK High Commissioner noted that there are no circumstances under which the UK believes that the use of the death penalty is legitimate. He noted too that even though it is the Government’s prerogative to pass the laws it wants, the UK’s view remains that there are no circumstances in which the death penalty is an appropriate sentence.

Three to face court today for KN grenade attack Three men are scheduled to be charged today for the grenade attack on Kaieteur News, which occurred just over a week ago. Police said that those to be charged are Janiel Howard, 30, called ‘JP’, of 322 Section ‘C’, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown; Alfie Garraway and Leroy Williams. Howard surrendered to police on Monday shortly after a wanted bulletin was posted for him. The men are to be charged with “attempt to cause explosion”, an offence that can carry a 20-year prison term. Police believe that one of the suspects had handed over money and the fragmentation grenade to the individuals who threw the device. The same individual was implicated in a number of armed robberies, including one that was carried out at a private hospital in 2007. He escaped injury in 2009 when individuals shot at a vehicle he was driving. He reportedly

Bartica man remanded for murder of Madewini mechanic Days after he reportedly confessed to killing a 25-yearold mechanic, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds in his bedroom, 21year-old Rayon Jones was yesterday charged with murder and remanded to prison. Jones, who resides at 212 Fourth Avenue, Bartica, is accused of murdering Pooran Baljit of 57 Madewini, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara on June 9, during the course or furtherance of a robbery. It was reported that Baljit was stabbed to death right next to the room his parents were sleeping in at their home located at the aforementioned Soesdyke address. He was discovered with his head hanging out of his bedroom window with his body drenched with blood from the stab wounds he received to his shoulder and stomach. The accused was arrested on Sunday at the

Georgetown seawalls after he was lured there by his girlfriend. It was reported that he told investigators that he had entered Baljit’s bedroom earlier that night, and had hid himself until the victim fell asleep. He reportedly told detectives that Baljit woke up suddenly, and they had had a scuffle. The father of one was represented by Attorney Latchmie Rahamat. The Attorney requested for the preliminary inquiry hearing to be done by paper committal. This, she said, would save judicial time. City Magistrate Judy Latchman remanded the accused to prison until July

Goolsarran had said, too, that there are certain parts of the Procurement Act which have not been adhered to since the Act came into effect on 1 January 2004. These include ensuring the criteria used for selection are such that they do not discriminate against particular contractors and suppliers and the award of contracts based on the lowest evaluated bid as opposed to the lowest bid. Failing to look at these, he opined, has also proven to be very costly to the country.

‘Crime Chief’ Dale Andrews laid to rest It was a fitting send-off for a man who lived as a larger than life character in the eyes of the many who interacted with him. A veteran in the local journalistic field, Assistant Editor Dale ‘Crime Chief’Andrews was laid to rest yesterday while crowds gathered to say farewell. Among those paying tribute during the service at the Trinity Methodist Church on High and D’Urban Streets were Vice President and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall, as well as Veteran broadcaster and Andrews’ former colleague Francis Quamina Farrier. Describing him as fearless and passionate in the work he did, Nagamootoo lauded Dale for persevering in a profession that is at times extremely dangerous. “Adam said that Dale had presented him with his last story that he ran,” Nagamootoo said. “But that was not his final story. Today is the last story. Dale Andrews interrupted a session of the Cabinet and he took away the chairperson to be here to say a few words.” “I knew Dale Andrews. He became a reporter when I became a Minister in 1992. He developed into an investigator with a particular flair and appearance that linked him to crime fighting. But I know he has been a dedicated journalist.” GUYANANEEDS MORE

DALE ANDREWS In an emotional tribute, Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall made it clear that with the loss of Dale Andrews, the country had lost someone who went out of his way to help others and play a role in developing an entire nation. The Publisher, whose vehicle was targeted in a botched grenade attack on the night of the first wake held for Andrews, exuded fortitude as he called for Guyana to look for “more Dale Andrews”. He queried whether anyone was ready to take up the mantle of what Andrews stood for. “The guy never stayed home. On his day off, he would walk into the office and sit down there. That was the passion, the loyalty, the dedication that Dale had for Journalism.” A man who frequently clashed with Andrews in the Kaieteur News newsroom, Editor in Chief Adam Harris eulogized his fallen colleague. He spoke of Andrews’ dogged determination to always see a story through and also revealed the final hours of Andrews’ life, when he delivered a story almost with his dying breath. “He will forever be linked with Muhammad Ali. Ali died the same day (subtracting a few hours for the time difference). Dale was 47, Ali was 74. The night before Dale

Minutes later, one of the men exited the vehicle and smeared mud on the rear number plate before the men drove off. After tossing the grenade, the men headed north along Saffon Street, but later crashed in the vicinity of Norton Street and Mandela Avenue. Three men, including an individual in a hooded garment, reportedly fled from the car.

died he spoke with me on the phone and he called in a story. He worked to the end.” Francis Quamina Farrier, who worked with Andrews when he (Andrews) was a young journalist at Guyana Broadcasting Corporation, hailed the ‘Crime Chief’ for his contributions to field of Journalism. He made it clear that it was not how many years one lived but it was about how one lived. DALE THE PRANKSTER A side of Andrews known to a select few was highlighted by his cousin Ayodele Harper. She spoke of Dale the prankster, who would play tricks on her or his sister in order to usurp their food or other items. Juxtaposed with the playful side of Andrews, however, was her testimony of him as someone who never failed to

encourage others. She stated that when others saw nothing but a dreamer in her, Andrews saw the potential and invested time and effort in pushing her to excel. June 19th will be Father’s Day, but Andrews, who was respected by all as a passionate family man, will not be around to share this father’s day with his children. The grief was evident as his daughter Aaliyah beautifully sang ‘on the wings of a dove’ for the gathering, a song that was her father’s favourite, and his son Miciah read an epistle. Another of his four daughters, Abenna, praised her father’s dedication to his children. Dale Andrews passed away from heart-related ailments on the morning of June 4. He was 47. He was laid to rest at Le Repentir cemetery. (See photos on pages 14 & 15)

Cops grill remand prisoners about murder of Chinese businesswoman Three remand prisoners just may know something about the murder of Chinese businesswoman Xiu Di Yang, who was shot dead No. 57 Village, Corentyne, four months ago. Ranks from Berbice and the Major Crimes Unit are trying to ascertain if the men may have carried out this killing just before their incarceration. Detectives have been grilling the suspects since Monday, while trying to locate a fourth man. It was last February that Yang, 49, was shot in the face at the Gin Li Lai Restaurant, allegedly by one of two unmasked men who had gained entry to the restaurant via an open back door. The attack reportedly occurred shortly after the woman, her husband Xu Hue Su, 51, and sons Zhuo Xing Su, 24, and a 14-year-old sibling, Zhuo Su, had finished dinner. Police said that Xiu Di Yang, her husband and two sons were in their restaurant, which was closed for business at the time, when two men, one of whom had a firearm, the premises in an apparent robbery attempt. The husband and the two children fled and raised an alarm. At this stage the armed man discharged a round that struck Xiu Di Yang in the face. The intruders then escaped. Xiu Di Yang was taken to the Skeldon Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN...

The new PNC is sending confusing signals Many persons are saying that the AFC and the WPA, as part of the new government with APNU, have to speak out against unpopular policies of the new dispensation because silence could harm the credibility of both of these junior partners in the Coalition. From the AFC side, their pronouncements on the Harmon controversy have encouraged that perception. The AFC even called for the reduction of the large number of portfolios Mr. Harmon holds.

This perception will grow even larger now, because a few AFC Councilors in Region 2 support the removal of the REO who is an APNU selectee. Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan is from the AFC, and he is certainly not silent on the parking meter fiasco. It means therefore that people will continue to press the AFC to speak out against bad or egregious mistakes of both central and municipal governments. The Working People’s Alliance is being called upon,

too, to denounce unpopular policies. But for all intents and purposes, the WPA seems to be one man only – Dr. David Hinds. It is only Hinds from the WPA that has pronounced on the mistreatment of the vendors. Hinds is the only one from the WPA that thinks prosecution needs to be pursued out of the findings of the forensic audit. Hinds is the only one from the WPA that is talking about the Walter Rodney Commission report. Amidst this ongoing reticence of the

WPA on national issues, there suddenly appeared a WPA press release on the Walter Rodney death anniversary. One hopes the WPA is not living only to issue press releases. If the AFC and the WPA are being urged to comment on unfair policies or unpopular postures of the Coalition Government, why isn’t the PNC doing the same? Surely, the PNC cannot believe that because it is the senior member of the Coalition, it will be unwise and unstrategic to openly criticize the very administration it leads. It is short-sighted if it thinks that way, because the Government of Guyana is not a unitary construct. It is a coalition, and a coalition means that each component is not bound to accept any kind of mistakes the government makes. There are increasing areas of dissatisfaction that the PNC as a Coalition member

Frederick Kissoon ought to let Guyanese know where it stands. There is a new PNC in Guyana. The old PNC died a long time ago. The new PNC has leaders who are not carrying baggage from the past. President Granger is certainly a fresh breeze. Why would the leader of this new PNC and his close party comrades want to tolerate some of the messy situations that the Coalition Government has found itself in? Let’s start with the President himself. Mr. Granger says he doesn’t want people to praise him all the time. He wants to have objective assessments. Against this background, the PNC, as a party, should have castigated the Chronicle for its refusal to publish David Hinds’ column that disagreed with the President on the Rodney Report. The PNC’s press release on the matter should have stated that in this new dispensation Guyana has entered into, the Chronicle cannot go back to its depraved, propagandistic physiology. Strangely, the

PNC remained silent. Then there is the ancient profligacy of the City Hall. The City Council is run in the name of the party that David Granger leads. But the City Council and its Mayor and Town Clerk behave as if they are living in the days when they could do to Georgetowners whatever they want. Each day brings another tale of Town Clerk arrogance. Is the PNC happy with the little dog kennels that have been allocated to vendors on Merriman Mall? This situation is sick and abominable. How could the PNC as a party tolerate such abuse of its own supporters? Now we have the parking meter scandal. Look who are in Mexico to examine the parking meters? APNU member, Patricia ChaseGreen, from the City Council, the past 25 years. Oscar Clarke from the City Council, the past 25 years. And Royston King from City Hall the past 20 years. To make it worse, APNU’s own councilors did not know the trio had left for Mexico. Why would a new PNC allow these old habits from its old Councilors to tarnish the credibility of David Granger? What political mileage does the new PNC stand to gain from its refusal to seek the removal of both Chase-Green and King? Finally, will APNU councilors break rank from its AFC colleagues and vote for the retention of the Region 2 REO. If the man is not performing why stick with him? Only the new PNC can answer that.

EDUCATION MINISTRY SHUTS BRICKDAM SECONDARY DOORS As part of the Ministry of Education’s plan to address the situation at the beleaguered Brickdam Secondary School, the ministry has decided to issue letters of transfer to the effect that teachers and students report to different secondary institutions, starting today. Yesterday, ministry officials held a meeting with the teachers at 13:00 hours when they informed them of the decision. Later in the day, at 16:30 hours, the same officials held a meeting at Saint Stanislaus College with the parents where they were then notified. A parent speaking with this newspaper expressed that the plan may eventually lead to the break-up of the institution. She finds the move suspicious since only a few more weeks are left in the school term. They were told to uplift their letters of transfer today. According to the information received, it had been suggested to the Ministry of Education that the students and staff be relocated to either Saint Stanislaus on Brickdam or Enterprise Primary School in D’Urban Backlands as a temporary solution, while a permanent fix is put in place. Last Monday teachers of Brickdam Secondary stood firm in their position not to give instruction to the students of the institution. They had been engaged in a sit-in protest since last Friday against the life-threatening and unhealthy conditions which they along with students are forced to work in daily. Sentiments expressed to Kaieteur News upon visiting the institution on Monday last alluded to the fact that the school has reached a point

....transfer letters issued to teachers, students

whereby it is no longer conducive for learning. This publication was prevented from entering the building but was approached by a representative of the staff who thereafter expressed the collective grievances. It was highlighted, that there are only two washrooms available for the staff of 25 to use. There are only four usable washrooms available for the some 400 students. This represents a ratio of 100 to one. The individual declared the building unfit for learning since there is not a single classroom for teaching. Classes are reportedly separated by blackboards. The staff member commented that the washrooms designated for students are tainted with offensive odours and are clogged with sewage. One staff member intimated that the school has no capacity for pre-vocational subjects. There is no place to accommodate dance, drama, music or physical education. The secondary school lacks

proper scientific laboratories for students to conduct the required practical work for School Based Assessments. Additionally this publication was told that the structure cannot safely host the students any longer since the building would shake whenever there is a general assembly or when the students are engaged in play within the building. The staff member stressed that their right as workers to a safe and healthy working environment is not being recognized by the relevant authorities. Airing her concerns as well, a parent told this publication that her daughter had contracted a disease from using one of the washrooms in the school. She was forced to take her child to a private doctor to have the problem diagnosed and addressed. She communicated that the slightest rain would cause the already cramped compound to flood and the dirty water causes an itch on the child’s

legs. According to the staff member, this issue has a history dating back to 2011 when the then Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, had announced that a new building was in the making for Brickdam Secondary and Central High. Following that, in 2013, the staff of Brickdam had a meeting with the Chief Education Officer Olato Sam concerning similar complaints being raised now and nothing came out of it. Last year, the staff said that the Guyana Teachers’ Union had held a special press conference to highlight the problems facing Brickdam Secondary. The teachers were then told that there is a state-of-the-art institution being built to house both secondary institutions which to date has not been realized.

Govt. legislator resigns after sex video goes viral P O RT O F S PA I N , Trinidad - CMC – Government Senator Hafeez Ali has reportedly resigned after a sexually explicit video has gone viral on social media, the Trinidad Express newspaper reported yesterday. While there has been no official confirmation of the resignation from the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM), the newspaper said that the police are now investigating the matter as part of a blackmail plot. Ali, a businessman and pilot, has not responded to the media report even as the newspaper reported that he re-

Hafeez Ali

signed because he is concerned about the possible backlash for his family. Ali, 43, who joined the ruling party in 2003, con-

tested the Bartaria/San Juan constituency in the September 7 general election, losing out to Dr. Fuad Khan, the former health minister.

Venezuela state governor blames Aruba and Curacao for food shortages WILLEMSTAD, Curacao — Jose Gregorio Vielma Mora, a former general who is now the governor of the Venezuelan state of Tachira, has accused Curacao and Aruba of contributing to the shortage of food in Venezuela. According to the retired general, tons of illegal products like vegetables, fruits and fish. “…are being exported to some islands in the Caribbean, particularly Curacao and Aruba.” Vielma Mora indicated during an interview that he has instructed the Venezuelan consuls on these islands to explain to the authorities that

Jose Gregorio Vielma Mora these contraband exports are harmful for Venezuela. The governor also informed that there are legal ex-

ports taking place from his state Tachira to the Curacaoan and Aruban markets. He spoke of products like cheese, coffee, potatoes, carrots and fruits that are being exported by 39 companies that have permits. He did not give more details about the companies with permits to export. These declarations from the governor were met with heavy criticism from the opposition parties in the Venezuelan parliament. These parties say that this is another lie from the government party to cover the truth about what is happening in Venezuela. (Caribbean News)

Marijuana conversation moves forward in CARICOM KINGSTOWN, St Vincent — The formal regional conversation around marijuana in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will move to another level when the first national consultation on the issue is held today in St Vincent and the Grenadines. The Regional Commission on Marijuana, in collaboration with the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines has convened a series of consultations with a cross section of stakeholders including youth, faith based organisations and non-governmental organisations and special interests groups. In July 2014, the CARICOM conference of heads of government mandated the secretary general of CARICOM to establish the Marijuana Commission,

which would, inter alia, “examine the social, economic, health and legal issues surrounding the various aspects of marijuana use in the Caribbean and its implications, and make recommendations to the conference”. In fulfilling its mandate, the commission will host three focus group discussions and a town hall meeting as part of the national consultation in St Vincent and the Grenadines. They will engage with youth drawn from secondary and high schools, community colleges, tertiary learning institutions, out of school youth, youth leaders and institutions working with youth. Discussions will also be held with special interests groups such as researchers, medical practitioners, including of alternative medicine;

advocates for medicinal and others uses of marijuana, and representatives from the National Drug Council, as well as faith-based organisations and non-governmental organisations. The commission, headed by Prof. Rose-Marie-Bell Antoine, dean of the Faculty of Law, University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, is comprised of practitioners with expert knowledge in a variety of disciplines including medicine and allied health, health research, law enforcement, ethics, education, anthropology, sociology, and culture. The consultation in St Vincent and the Grenadines is the first of the region-wide engagements to be undertaken by the commission. (Caribbean News)

Griffith: T&T not ready for terror attack

Fighting for isis: Trinidadian fighters Shane Crawford, from left, Arshad Mohammed and three other unidentified Trinidadians pose for a photo, wearing military gear and holding assault weapons, in Syria last year. Trinidad Express - Former Minister of National Security Gary Griffith says the time has come for citizens to stop thinking that this country would not be affected by acts of terrorism. And he called on the Government to establish an elite unit of persons trained for counter terrorist activities. Griffith was responding to the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, at the weekend. He said, “Trinidad and Tobago is part of the globe so we cannot bury our heads in the sand with the hope that because God is a Trini we will not be affected. We must always be vigilant. Thankfully because we signed that UN

resolution 2178 it has allowed us a big head start to get info from our allies. But again what we are lacking, that is important, and it showed based on this recent incident.” Griffith said during his tenure as National Security Minister he attempted to implement an elite counter terrorist unit to be prepared for an initial strike force. At this time, he said, Trinidad and Tobago was not prepared to a similar situation. He said contrary to statements by National Security Minister Edmund Dillon that the situation can be handled by the special forces of the military, that was not true. “That is not the role of the

special forces of the army. That SUATT Unit is an elite unit of persons trained for counter terrorist activity, hostage negotiation and dealing with what is known as improvised explosive devices. The PNM had that unit known as the Direct Action Task Force and it was disbanded by the UNC. I reignited it known as the Special Operations Group, unfortunately it has also been disbanded but it shows the importance of such a unit,” he said. Griffith said it was a “slap in the face” that the shipment of armoured vehicles which were expected to arrive in Trinidad and Tobago was cancelled.

Police issue warning to media, general public ROSEAU, Dominica CMC – The Dominica police have warned media houses here that they are prepared to clamp down on talk shows that incite violence and would take all necessary actions “to prevent lawlessness and to protect life and property and to ensure that members of the public go about their lawful business”. Police Commissioner Daniel Carbon in a statement late Monday said the police will “not allow the Commonwealth of Dominica to experience the errors of 1979 and the early 1980s,” a reference to the violence, deaths and spate of national strikes that forced the then Patrick John administration out of office. “The police force is mandated to prevent acts of violence and lawlessness and also to react to acts of violence and lawlessness by investigating whenever these acts happen, and to bring perpetrators to justice irre-

spective of race, colour, creed or class,” Carbon said. He said he is concerned about citizens who have been calling various radio talk programmes in which they incite members of the public to commit acts of violence. “I am very much concerned of the statements aired on radio talk shows where callers are making statements to incite members of the public to commit acts of lawlessness and violence.” Carbon noted that there is a procedure in the law for people to embark on lawful protest action reiterating that the Dominica Constitution provides for every person here to be entitled to fundamental rights and freedoms as well as the Public Order Act Chapter which provides for the preservation of the public order. “The Police Force is mandated to prevent acts of violence and lawlessness and

also to react to acts of violence and lawlessness by investigating whenever these acts happen and to bring the perpetrators to justice irrespective of race, colour, creed or class,” Daniel said, calling on member of the public to resolve their grievances in a peaceful manner. “The Police Force will deal with anyone who incites or perpetrates acts of violence and lawlessness. Additionally, the Police Force has a man d a t e t o p r o t e c t t h e state and institutions of the state. Therefore, I am warning that members of the public resolve their grievances in a peaceful, lawful, and quiet way.” While he did not single out any particular media house here, Carbon said Dominica is a country known for its peacefulness and tranquillity and there is a procedure outlined in the law for people to embark on lawful protest action.

Uitvlugt and Pouderoyen take full points By Franklin Wilson Uitvlugt Warriors and Pouderoyen FC romped to contrasting wins when the Stag sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior League continued on Sunday last at the Den Amstel Community Center ground. Uitvlugt were able to eke out a 1-0 win over the tough Young Achievers, thanks to a Jamal Petty 58th minute goal in a close contest. Young Achievers, based in Pouderoyen stood firm for the entire first half against their more seasoned counterparts. But Uitvlugt finally b r e a c h e d t h e Yo u n g Achievers defence on 58

minutes and it was all that they needed to walk away with full points. Pouderoyen romped to a 4-0 win against Jetty Gunners which squandered a few chances early in the piece. In the end however, it was the experience of the West Bank based Pouderoyen side that took them to victory, thanks to a double from Morgan Denny. Denny’s first goal in the 37th minute was the only one standing at the half way mark as the Jetty boys proved to be formidable opponents. Jetty stood solid for quite some time in the second half but finally cracked under intense pressure from the Pouderoyen boys; giving up three goals in a 7 minute span

which effectively secured full points for the winners. Denny completed his double in the 73rd minute which also doubled his team’s advantage. Two minutes later the lead was further increased when Dwayne St. Kitts converted with goal number four scored by Jermaine McDonald in the 79th minute. League play will continue on Saturday when Wales United oppose Vegae Boys in the first match to be followed by a clash between Yo u n g A c h i e v e r s a n d G o l d e n Wa r r i o r s . O n Sunday, two more matches will be contested. Den Amstel will match skills with Jetty Gunners while Stewartville engage Eagles.

James, Irving explode to keep Cavs alive in NBA Finals OAKLAND, CALIF. (Reuters) LeBron James powered the sharpshooting Cleveland Cavaliers to a season-saving 112-97 win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors on Monday to climb within 3-2 in the bestof-seven NBA Finals. Cleveland, facing

elimination at the hands of the top-seeded Warriors, got 41 points each from James and Kyrie Irving and displayed a tenacious defense to set up another door-die game for the Cavaliers on Thursday in Cleveland. “We are just happy we got another day, that’s all we can ask for. We got another

day to survive,” James, who also had 16 rebounds and seven assists, said after the game. “We understand this is a great team no matter who is out on the floor for those guys. They are the champions so we’ve got to be ready.” With their season on the line, the Cavaliers exploded with their best game yet of the NBA Finals as James and Kyrie Irving proved too much for a Warriors team playing without suspended defensive stalwart Draymond Green. The Cavaliers duo became the first teammates to score at least 40 points in an NBA Finals game. “They had two great games, two breakout games. We need those two guys to give us confidence early, and they both did that,” Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said about James and Irving. “But I’m just very excited and proud of the way we scrapped and continued to play hard. That’s how we’ve got to play. That’s us.” The game got off to a wild start and produced the best 24 minutes yet of the Finals as the Warriors and Cavaliers each displayed some incredible shotmaking that left the teams tied 61-61 at halftime. It marked the highestscoring first half in an NBA Finals game since the 1987 championship between the Los A n g e l e s L akers and

Boston Celtics. But after a tight first half it was Cleveland who finally pulled ahead by 10 points late in the third quarter as Irving carried over the shooting clinic he put on during the first 24 minutes to keep the home crowd in check. With a chance to clinch the title on their home court, where they had lost just three times all season, the Warriors were unable to find a way back into the game as the Cavs stymied any bit of momentum Golden State tried to generate. Klay Thompson had a team-high 37 points for the Wa r r i o r s o n 11 - o f - 2 0 shooting, including six three-pointers, but it was far from enough on this night. “ We h a d a g o o d offensive first half, made some shots, had 61 points, and then kind of got bogged down in the second,” said Warriors head coach Steve K e r r. “ We t r i e d a l o t o f d i ff e r e n t t h i n g s , a n d nothing seemed to w ork. It was one of those nights.” Green will be back in the Wa r r i o r s l i n e u p f o r Thursday’s pivotal Game Six after serving a onegame ban after being assessed his fourth flagrant foul from his scuffle with James in the previous contest. The Cavaliers are trying to become the first team to win a championship after falling behind 3-1 in the NBA Finals.

LUCOZADE Indoor Hockey Tournament underway The Guyana Hockey Board, in collaboration with LUCOZADE, kicked off their first Indoor Hockey Tournament of the year yesterday and will continue every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday onward. This is be the first local major tournament since the new Executive was elected, and eyes and ears are glued to observe the potential progress of this vibrant group. The other substantial point to note is that this tournament is a stepping stone for both the male and female teams since they have their sights set on the Pan American Indoor Championships in Canada slated for April of next year, and the locker room gossip is that the odds are, so far, in

the local teams’ favor. GCC has entered three male teams and two female teams, the A team being sponsored by Pizza Hut. This A team has been crushing the competition for some time and are touted as the tournament favorites, but the second string GCC female team (The Spartans) has shown vast improvement and promise to hold their own as well. The Old Fort squad boasts of two formidable male teams and a female “underdog” side that will hold no punches. The Hikers, on the other hand, brings one male team to the game but are confident in their numbers, while their female squad is in its rebuilding stages but promises to make their mark

nevertheless. The Saints squad brags of male team that is a force to be reckoned with. All junior players return to their respective sides after not playing with their teams for two years due to under 21 training. This bolsters the anticipated competition and will make for some exhilarating entertainment. Players to watch are Junior National stars Aroydy Branford and Andrew Stuart from the Hikers team, which also consist of Senior National players Robert France and Shane Samuels. The latter is the reigning MVP of the National Indoor Tournament. Juniors Daniel Hooper and Kareem McKensie, along with National Goalkeeper Medroy Scotland (who is in for an injured Junior Captain Mark Sergeant), will rejoin GCC; while Saints will have the skills of Ato Greene and Hilton Chester in their arsenal. Old Fort will also be stronger due to Omar Hopkinson’s presence. The action goes down at the National Gymnasium, beginning at 17:00hrs daily.

Maria Sharapova of Russia (REUTERS/DANIEL MUNOZ/FILE PHOTO TPX IMAGES) (Reuters) Russian former number one Maria Sharapova has lodged an appeal of her two-year suspension from tennis with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS),
