The Haitians are coming In recent news, the issue of the revocation of visa-free travel for Haitians coming to Guyana has been in the spotlight, coupled with reports of groups of dozens of Haitian nationals being found in the country and then disappearing. Of course, the elephant in the China shop of our fragile racial politics is the claim that Haitians have been singled out by the People’s Progressive Party government because they are Afro-Caribbean citizens.

It is likely in keeping with this particular ‘sensitivity’ that when the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, SC announced the intention to revoke visa-free travel for Haitians, he also announced the intention to revoke visa-free travel for Cubans, perhaps as a sort of balancing measure.

The problem of course is that no such measure has been taken related to Cubans as yet, at least not publicly, a reality that might very well work counter to the AG’s attempt at engineering public opinion on the Haitian visa reversal. While this is in the larger context a complex issue, fraught with greater socio-political implications, the reality is that there exists a clear problem that requires a clear, and credible, solution.

Firstly, it should be said without equivocation that Guyana has no moral right – and every reasonable responsibility not – to deny migrants from any poor country seeking refuge here, whether they are from Haiti or from Venezuela or from Cuba. Starting in the late 1970s and peaking throughout the 1980s, Guyanese illegally departed this country by the thousands, running from the dire economic straits they were faced with here. Indeed, even after the change of political administration and the increase in economic fortunes in the 1990s, illegal migration (to the United States in particular but to sister CARICOM and South American countries as well) was still so prevalent that it constituted an industry in itself. Without illegal migration and the eventual regularization of Guyanese in the countries they ran to, Guyana would have been far worse off.

Just like the Haitians and Venezuelans and Cubans who come here send back money to their families, Guyanese remittances from a largely illegal migrant diaspora kept this country afloat.

The counter argument of course is that a greater responsibility exists now to manage migration (legal and notso-legal) here to ensure that an influx of migrants does not overburden the already fragile and tattered social safety net that exists for Guyanese citizens.

That said, the recent issues have nothing at all to do with Haitians coming to this country to create a better life for themselves. There has been the accidental and intentional conflation of two separate and distinct issues – Haitian migration to Guyana, which constitutes at best a handful of persons, and the use of Guyana as a transshipment point for tens of thousands of Haitians being illegally transported to Brazil in particular, following an opening up of the country to Haitian refugees in the wake of the devastating earthquake of 2010. Since then Haitians have been using whatever routes they can take to get to Brazil, suffering – according to several articles and studies – abuse and sexual exploitation along the way, and economic exploitation when they arrive.

No sane argument can be made, particularly on moral grounds, that any government of any country should turn a blind eye to the illegal transportation of thousands of persons through their country. Firstly, it is common sense that unmonitored illegal migration opens up the opportunity for other items being illicitly smuggled, whether technically legal goods such as food or cigarettes or alcohol, or illicit items such as narcotics or weapons. Worse yet, as with every organized illegal movement of people across borders, the reality of human rights abuses exists, whether in terms of extortion of those trafficked for their exploitation for labour or sex, either on the journey itself or at the final destination.

The Guyana government’s decision to revoke visafree travel for Haitians, while arguably necessary in the sense that something had to be done or seen to be done, is in reality a reactive initiative, one that means little in itself when it comes to addressing the root problem, and less if not part of a comprehensive system to combat the

DEAR EDITOR, The Vice President recently reminded his party stalwarts that the party barely won the March 2020 General Elections. He was appealing to them to perform efficiently and conduct themselves above probity. Few Ministers heed his advice, and there have not been consequences.

It is said that a large chunk of the budget is looted. Would government address complaints and scandals about corruption?

Can the PPP hold its slim and fragile majority in 2025?

By the looks of things and the widespread grumbling on the ground, the PPP would have lost several seats. The PPP base is not state employed.

They are largely self-sustained or depend on the private sector. They have been suffering over the last two years, worse now than under the coalition. Conditions have been worsened by the pandemic and floods. Money is not circulating and supporters are suffering; everyone

complaining how things real bad under this government.

Therefore, PPP would definitely lose seats. But that don’t stop the stealing. In fact, the fear of losing power result in more theft of State funds. Some are said to making out like daytime bandits.

Kickbacks are flowing like floodwater and the VP knows; that $40M over pricing for the sheet metal (KN Jun 21) is only a tip of the iceberg. That is why the VP kept referring to the narrow majority to give officials a warning. However, officials don’t bother with him because there are no consequences to their actions; they know the VP won’t discipline them.

Imagine a contract was given some $40M above the minimum bid at NDIA, and it was approved by Cabinet.

And there are dozens more like that, contract totalling in the billions of dollars – given to friends and families and would wound their way back to some officials as kickbacks, allegedly. The $40M could

have been used to finance several pumps to drain villages on the coast. The billions of dollars looted through overpricing could have been used to grant 30K poorest families (affected by the flooding) $50K a month for a year. Instead of thinking of helping people, officials are helping their bank accounts, fooling the people that the government cares for them.

Supporters of PPP are losing faith in the party. They are disgusted with the widespread corruption. One recalls that corruption and neglect of the base caused them to move to the AFC in 2011. They returned to PPP when the AFC began behaving exactly like when the PPP was in government and because of PNC racism. And since August 2020, the PPP has been behaving exactly like how it behaved pre-2015 – no lessons learned.

The avalanche of corruption especially over the last eight months is scandalous, disgusting. Clearly, PPP does not want to return to office in

2025 or feels that its base would not abandon it as happened in 2011 and 2015. For sure, the PNC support base has not walked away and will vote solidly for it again. No PNCite has conceded defeat by the PPP in 2020 and they will vote solidly PNC. The PPP can verify this prediction from their pollster who constantly praises their performance.

The VP calls the shot in the government. Would he act to stem the tide of corruption? How will government deal with $40M overpriced sheet piling contract at NDIA and similar scandals elsewhere? Isn’t it time for replacement or reshuffling of the Cabinet?

A decent, honest third force of credible people is wanted to teach the PPP a lesson and to save the country from a bevy of corrupt deals.

The small parties should give consideration for an amalgamation that can confront corruption.

IS THE PRESIDENT TELLING THE TRUTH? DEAR EDITOR, It was reported (KN Sat. June 26, 2021) that “President, Dr. Irfaan Ali has said that unless the targets that were set at the Paris Agreement in 2015 are realised, the world can expect to experience future water disasters and setbacks to the Sustainable Development Agenda”. It is inconceivable how Guyana can be drowning in water, while our neighbours Brazil and Venezuela are experiencing severe drought. How much is our government hiding from us?

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius = (35.6 degrees Fahrenheit) preferably to 1.5 de-

grees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate neutral world by midcentury.

The Paris Agreement is a landmark in the multilateral climate change process because, for the first time, a binding agreement brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.

Gas flaring is a typical catastrophe with varying implications for the nation. For these implications, there is increasing public concerns about its continued practice.

The critics aim at creating

trafficking of Haitian citizens, including greater international cooperation with neighbouring countries, better border monitoring, and vastly improved internal policing. Indeed, the statistics are that between 2015 and 2021, 42,000 Haitians are said to have entered Guyana but only 3900 have been recorded as leaving.

With visa-free travel having been implemented in 2019, this means that for the greater part of the period under review, visa-free travel was not a factor, or a significant one, in the issue of tens of thousands of Haitians passing through this country. There is no way that tens of thousands of persons from one country could have passed through Guyana, particularly along the narrow corridor of the Linden-Lethem road, without the complicity of Immigration Department authorities and the Guyana Police Force.

Guyana has a Haitian migration problem, but it is not one of Haitians migrating to Guyana, but migrating through Guyana for a better life in Brazil, one that is not guaranteed. If anything, those who profess to care for Haitian people in Guyana need to both work to ensure that the Haitians who do come here for a better life find representation, acceptance and integration into this society, and also to make sure that Guyana does not serve as a weak (or strong) link in an international illegal migration chain that exists only to further exploit and impoverish an historically exploited and impoverished people.

In Nigeria’s Niger Delta, the flaring process is usually very close to residents and farmlands and has been implicated in serious environmental degradation of the region [1].

Etim et al. have noted that gas flaring and consequent carbon dioxide emissions contribute greatly to deforestation and climate change, leading to overheating, heavy rainfall and flooding as well as soil erosion.

Also, in this era of rising gas utility, both for domestic and export needs, flaring is an economic wastage. According to Madueme, the economic cost of total gas flared

is quite staggering, which implies a great wastage of investment opportunities to the sector and expected contribution to gross national income of the nation.

The associated impacts of gas flaring can be divided into direct and indirect contributions and are evaluated in terms of their influence on changes to the ecosystem. A typical indirect contribution is prevalence of security risks, including youth restiveness and other social strife as can be seen in the increasing number of murders in Guyana by our youths of recent.

Transactions involving natural resources must require parliamentary ratification DEAR EDITOR, Reference is made to Mr. Vishnu Bisram’s letter, “I am in support of rescuing GuySuCo through land leases”. (KN June 29). Mr. Bisram raised a very interesting concept that has never been debated - not in the parliament nor in the media.

Government is spending billions of dollars to resuscitate a bankrupt Stateowned sugar business with a zero chance of making this business viable again under its present form.

Transferring ownership of the land (selling or leasing) to

sugar workers, let them take ownership as well as the risk of growing sugar cane; let government or private investors take charge of the factories to turn the cane into sugar and molasses and market the products.

This is a concept that works well in India.

In this way, the Government of Guyana would not have to bail out GuySuCo annually to the tune of billions of dollars.

To me the absence of debate and consideration of alternative ideas of how to turn around an ailing sugar (Continued on page 6)

The human trafficking curse is becoming quite topical in Guyana DEAR EDITOR, Just recently, gleaning from the news, “10 youths, including a pregnant woman, had been held at a hotel on the Corentyne, after they had been brought from neighbouring Suriname.” It is sad what is unfolding, and Guyana has done the right thing by having them stationed at the Hugo Chavez Centre for Rehabilitation, West Coast Berbice, even as police are investigating.

Prior to this, Law Enforcement Agencies, in the past, did hold-up Haitians heading to Brazil, after they were blocked at the entry point at Lethem.

This interceptive work resulted from a joint effort between the Brazilian Federal Police and Guyana’s Customs Anti Narcotic Unit. Countering any form of trafficking is a huge undertaking and the reason is obvious.

The figures show that it earns global profits of roughly $150 billion per year for the

traffickers. Here in Guyana, there is a burgeoning crisis.

Back in September 2019, Winston Felix, then in charge of immigration issues under the Granger Government, noted that “… while close to 8,500 Haitians arrived in the country for the first seven months of the year, only 1,170 are known to have departed the country. The rest, Felix said, are not in Guyana.” What is the take here? For one, who can definitively prove this?

And two, is it that Guyana is a suitable conduit? So, the problem must be addressed immediately. I recall too that in August 2019, Moses Nagamootoo did admit that “… the departure of Haitians should be better monitored.

In this vein, it is good to read that Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, announced that, “Haitians and Cubans would soon require visas to travel to Guyana, amid concerns about a well-organised

Kissoon’s termination – the facts DEAR EDITOR, There has been a recent exchange, between former President Ramotar and Freddie Kissoon, in the letter columns. Among the issues referred to in the exchange is the determination of Freddie Kissoon‘s employment by the University of Guyana.

In the exchange, Freddie Kissoon argues that he was dismissed wrongfully, while Ramotar argues that because Kissoon had attained the age of retirement, he was not offered a contract to continue as a lecturer at the University of Guyana.

Both gentlemen are patently wrong in their contentions. Ramotar‘s resort to what a council member is reported to have said does not supplant the facts of the matter, to which I now refer.

Kissoon after retiring from the employ of the University was offered and accepted a contract to continue in the employ of the University beyond the age of retirement. This offer was made based on a recommendation of his department and was endorsed to by the University‘s Appointments

Committee. The Council of the University subsequently terminated the contract under the clause of the contract that provided for either party to terminate with notice. This the Council did and caused him to be paid for the period of notice (in lieu of notice) thus giving immediate effect to the termination.

Cause of termination was not a requirement of that contract/clause. This is very much like the provision, which is presently being used to terminate hundreds of contracts of employees of the Public Sector.

It is quite unfortunate that persons of the status of Ramotar and Kissoon are either not aware of the facts pertaining to matters on which they have chosen to comment publicly, or they are strangers to the truth for reasons best known to themselves. In either circumstance, it reeks of irresponsible behaviour by public figures.

human trafficking ring.” He stated that, “We are taking a position that will require visas for these nationals when they come, including Haitian nationals, Cuban nationals, etc. so the Government of Guyana will be moving in that direction.” Normally, the vast majority of CARICOM citizens can enter and stay for a period of six months in any one of the countries comprising CARICOM. The facts are that most of Haiti’s trafficking cases involve children in forced labour and domestic service, who often are abused physically, receive no payment for services rendered, and have significantly lower school enrollment rates. So, safeguarding the 10 at the Hugo Chavez institute is, indeed, a good move.

Anil Nandlall predicted that the Government’s move will be politicised/racialised, (and I am going with the trend here) by APNU+AFC. He is right, as I think back to the recent attacks from APNU+AFC regarding the COVID-19 cash grant, helping desperate flood victims and the vaccine procurement matter. However, Guyana must oppose and put measures in place so that it cannot be used as an international human trans-shipment point, no matter what the APNU+AFC does.

The Regional Joint Support Team will not add value to the business and investment environment DEAR EDITOR, As the debate continues whether the proposed ‘Regional Joint Support Team’ security unit will add value to the current development agenda of Guyana, my concerns are particularly in relation to business, investment, and human development youth development, women, and the family. My view is that it will not add value.

The government’s decision to establish a new crime fighting unit, outside of the constitution, as well as without any proper justification; and the way in which the decision was made - the lack of transparency, even at the level of the National Assembly; does not augur well for a country that touted as the ‘Singapore’ of South America.

This decision is equivalent to the decision by the former President David Granger, to appoint unilaterally the former Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice Patterson (Rtd.). This kind of behaviour by any government is one of the areas that increases risks in the business and investment environment in the country.

Business and investment are essentially about risks and returns; investors examine risks in the Guyana environment, as against the returns on their investments.

One of the reasons why it

is difficult, almost impossible to renegotiate the ExxonMobil agreement, is because international investors are protected by International Investment Law, as a matter of fact, there is a view that International Investment Law is slanted towards protecting the investors.

Let us examine some of the reasons for this. During the 1970’s and 80’s, countries such as Guyana, had followed a path to nationalisation and many foreign companies were nationalised.

The international investment landscape over the past 40, 30 and even 10 years has changed significantly. Life is about stimulus and response, perhaps, the evolution of the international investment environment - laws. principles, guidelines, etc. was in part, stimulated by the need to implement global rules to protect international investors and their investments in a way that makes it difficult for governments and countries, to unilaterally renege on investment agreements.

Therefore, we can conclude that in the absence of Guyana creating a stable environment for investment and business, and reducing the risk of doing business in Guyana, we have reduced our ability to negotiate above a two percent. Other countries can negotiate for six percent

Flaring of natural gas does contribute to climate change, because it releases carbon dioxide.

This rain in turn acidifies lakes, streams, and damages vegetation.

Other pollutants deplete soil nutrients harming agriculture.

In addition, there can be health implications of flaring, including cancer, lung damage and skin problems.

Does our government even care about us or our children breathing in these toxins or are they waiting for the inevitable to happen before doing something positive.

It is well to remember the

old Guyanese proverb “boat that gan a-fall can’t tun back”.

My fellow Guyanese don’t believe anything the oil companies say, their interest is far from Guyana’s wellbeing.

KN Sun. June 27 ran an article, “Gas to shore project could kill fish, other ma-

rine life,” peaked my interest on how the United States is able to provide propane gas to 123 million households (not people) in the continental US without

endangering the fish and other marine life there, while telling us, a country with fewer than a million people and even less households “gas-to-shore projects could kill the fish and marine life in Guyana.”

The flaring of oil-associated gas continues to generate insidious environmental and energy consequences against efforts toward sustainable development.

At some point, the Guyana Private Sector Commission, and Chambers of Commerce, Banking Association, need to stop singing our governments praises and tapping them on the backs for increasing the risk of doing business.

The Guyana business community need to start thinking about filling hotels, flights coming to Guyana and increasing the ability of customers to service loans, mortgages, etc.

International investors will continue to come to Guyana because they are protected under International Investment Law, and they can take their returns out of the country, but the local business community has to decide whether they want to play politics or do business, this is the harsh reality.

Guyana has enormous potential for growth and development, but we would not grow, except our governments align their words with their behaviour.

Our governments, this government, need to be more transparent and accountable and adhere to the principles of the Rule of Law and good governance; principles are universal, this is the kind of behaviour that will reduce the risk of doing business in Guyana and perhaps, create the environment for re-negotiating agreements. Nothing just happens, we have to make things happen by having strategic and systemic plans on how to achieve our business and investment goals and objectives.

Guyana is reported as one of the fastest growing economies in 2020 which the World Bank describes as an extraordinary growth rate of 43.5 percent, and as one of the (Continued on page 6)

SOME FACTS ABOUT A CONCERNING SITUATION DEAR EDITOR, Government has expressed concern over the volume of transient migrants, surmising that a human trafficking ring is involved, with great justification. During the torturous 2020 pre and post elections saga, there was ample evidence of the facilitation of human trafficking by leaders of an identified political configuration.

Allegations were rife that large sums were being expended from the nation’s coffers to facilitate travel, house and support illegal aliens and to provide them

with Guyanese identity documents such as birth certificates and national identity cards, with Guyanese names.

A news item published on 14th November 2020, headlined “Five in custody after 26 Haitians ‘discovered’ in suspected smuggling ring” related that twenty-six(26) Haitian nationals were placed in protective care after police, during multiple operations, discovered them in a suspected smuggling racket at a city hotel and a minibus on the Linden-Mabura Road.

In protective care are 10 men, nine (9) women, and

seven (7) children (two boys and five girls).

The children were proven not to be related to any of the adults in the party, which is alarming as revelations are circulating worldwide of incidents of kidnapping of persons for body parts, as well as for the usual reasons persons, including children, are kidnapped, primarily as slave labourers and sex slaves.

What this report shows, in the context of Guyana’s growth trajectory, is that if the

country continues along this pathway, it will become wealthy but with little change in the local operating environment and the trickle-down effect of the wealth, will be very limited. The scenario above shows that the international investors and a small few,

who are well positioned, will benefit from Gu yana’s

wealth, except there is a paradigm shift to create a conducive business and investment environment.

Such ignominy!

DEAR EDITOR, The suspended commission was emboldened by the ruling of the court and in a show of defiance has cast itself above a presidential order. Such ignominy!

For instance, the Government of Brazil has complained to the Government of Guyana about this country being used as a transshipment point for illegal aliens entering Brazil.

Several incidents reported by the media of Suriname last year referenced a surge of Haitians entering Suriname illegally from Guyana.

The 26 Haitians had provided false information to immigration officials on their arrival in Guyana, which caused suspicion of human smuggling, so a deportation order was sought and granted by Principal Magistrate Sherdel IsaacsMarcus, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court in December, 2020.

However, the Chief Justice, on December 3 last, issued a conservatory order

halting the deportation of the 26 Haitians, in an action filed

by Attorney Darren Wade against AG Anil Nandlall, contending that the order for deportation issued by the magistrate was arbitrary, and in violation of the fundamental rights of his clients.

After the Chief Justice issued the Conservatory Order, the Attorney-General informed her that their passports would be returned and they would be delivered to a location of their own choosing.

This was done and within days, they had disappeared, validating the Government’s contention that their movements were facilitated by a smuggling ring operating out of Guyana.

Subsequently, it was reported that Allandres Archer had withdrawn his name from representing the 26

Haitians.

Archer claimed, “I was contacted by Attorney-atLaw Darren Wade to give an affidavit to be a witness and it ended up, I was the person who was taking the government to court… I never agreed to that; I never wanted no (sic!) part of it, I received the people from the airport. I brought them to the hotel, I checked them in, then we got arrested and that was basically what I agreed on: But to take the government to court or to fight on behalf of the Haitians was never my intention.”

It is important to note, as a matter of great significance, that the lawyer who went to great lengths to champion the cause of the 26 Haitians who breached Guyana’s immigration prerequisites is a staunch PNC member.

In the State of Guyana major decisions – leasing of a million acres of our forest to Chinese companies, negotiating and signing an Oil Contract with ExxonMobil, Selling of Oil Blocks – are regularly drawn up and executed by the government without the involvement of the parliament.In normal, regular

democracies, the Oil Contract and the Selling of the Oil Blocks would have required debate and ratification by the parliament before they could become valid.

Someone pointed out to me that the Administration always commands the majority vote in parliament and therefore a parliamentary ratification would have been just a formality.

That is true – but there would have been a vigorous

debate in the parliament. Such debate would have exposed all the things that are wrong with the Oil Contract. Ditto with selling off Oil Blocks in secret days before an election and transfer of power. Ditto with leasing a few million acres of our forest to Chinese companies.

It is time the people of Guyana stand up and start demanding changes to our system of governance.

Recently, we carried an article with this title “Meeting Paris Agreements targets critical topreventing future water disasters President Irfaan Ali.” That is well said and praiseworthy, Mr.President.

But why is the event of an oil spill (God forbid), a not unheard of or unlikely man-made disaster, not of the same priority for the Guyana Government? That would have a terrible, if not catastrophic, impact on Guyana’s and possibly the waters of the Caribbean Sea. How come that is alsonot prioritised as critical and something compulsory for us to be safeguarded against?

Safeguarded by demanding that Exxon obtain and maintain satisfactory insurance coverage.

How and why is that not so critical? If Exxon has to pay for insurance, then it will have to put safety standards and procedures for underwriters to appreciate the risks involved, and extend coverage.

Aside from the insurance premium money, it appears that Exxon has no interest in covering the additional expense for necessary safety precautions.

When will President Ali and his Vice President insist upon this?

Men who refused to pay for hotdogs beat vendor, steal cash F

our men who on Saturday refused to pay a hotdog vendor for 10 hotdogs they had eaten, decided to beat him instead with a cricket bat and steal his day’s sales.

Recovering at home from a broken jaw and multiple lacerations to his body, is Ignatius Nazeem Manauf, 41, a remigrant from neighbouring Venezuela who resides at Anna Catherina on the West Coast Demerara (WCD).

Manuaf was beaten and robbed by the men sometime after 20:00hrs that evening along a roadway at Anna Catherina. According to

reports received by this newspaper, the hotdog vendor could have been beaten to death had it not been for the intervention by residents living nearby.

Kaieteur News contacted the severely injured hotdog vendor yesterday but he was unable to speak because of his broken jaw.

Nevertheless, one of his relatives related what had transpired that night. The relative said that Manuaf had left home early that day to sell hotdogs with his hotdog cart.

“He had been selling all day in the nearby villages and decided to end the day

selling at Anna Catherina,” the relative told Kaieteur News.

While waiting for customers, a white car stopped and four men reportedly approached Manuaf’s hotdog cart and ordered some hotdogs. The relative detailed that as they chatted with each other, Manuaf noted that they had eaten 10 hotdogs.

One of the men had reportedly struck up a conversation with Manuaf as well so at first, he was not bothered until things started to turn ugly. During the conversation, the relative detailed, the man asked

Manuaf, “Where are you from?”

Manuaf had reportedly responded that he was born in Guyana but grew up in Venezuela and had only returned to the country recently. The man, according to the relative, then said, “Oh, so you from Ve n e z u e l a ” b e f o r e reportedly cursing him.

“The man began telling him that Venezuelans are bad people and that he doesn’t l i k e Ve n e z u e l a n s ” , continued the relative.

It was at this point, stated the relative that Manuaf reportedly told the man to pay for the 10 hotdogs that he and his three friends had eaten.

“Nazeem told him, ‘Well if you have a problem with the Venezuelans then pay me for my hotdogs’,” the relative said.

The man reportedly refused to pay the total sum of $3,000 for the 10 hotdogs

Miner killed in Blackwater Backdam after mining pit caves in

2 1 - y e a r- o l d m i n e r w a s yesterday killed at approximately 16:30hrs. in the Blackwater Backdam, Cuyuni River, while he was working in the pit. The deceased is identified only as ‘Vibes’ from Four Miles, Port Kaituma.

Based on information received by this publication, on Monday afternoon the victim, one of five workers, was jetting in the mining pit when the dam that held slush from the tailings broke and slush began to run down.

An alarm was raised by the victim’s

coworker and friend, Elroy Smith, resulting in the victim pinching the hose. The victim started to run in an attempt to save himself but the slush caught and covered him entirely. His motionless body was dug up and brought to higher to ground by his coworkers.

The victim was then placed on an ATV and transported to Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A wound was observed to his right hand. The body was then placed in the hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem. Investigations are still ongoing.

Residential properties are disappearing faster than the coronavirus Georgetown is heading the way of London. Many of the streets and wards of London were not made for commercial activity and as a result of business expansion, London quickly became one of the more congested cities in the world.

Traffic congestion has its price. And you do not need to go to London to know this.

Yet, Guyanese who should have learnt from the experience of cities such as London have failed to recognise the importance of urban planning.

A few weeks ago, the President of Guyana was reported as telling a regional conference that how we respond to urbanisation will determine the quality of life of our citizens. Well, if urban planning is a litmus test of our citizens’ quality of life, then we are in for extremely difficult times ahead because what passes for urban planning in Guyana is absolute craziness.

Georgetown, the only city in Guyana and which by international standards is really a small town, has become one of the more poorly planned cities in the country. It was not always this way.

Even though the city was originally developed in a haphazard way, it evolved into a grid like structure with decent drainage, well laidout avenues in some wards and with green spaces for recreation and sports. There was a clear demarcation between residential and commercial areas even

though there used to be some houses behind most of the buildings in commercial districts and residential areas did allow for a limited number of small corner and grocery shops.

But it was nothing compared to the mass-scale commercialisation of the city which has since taken place. It seems as if hardly a day goes by that the rich businesspersons in the country are not gobbling up some residential property and converting it into a commercial property.

Five years ago, one of Guyana’s most prominent lawyer indicated that the city’s By-Laws prohibited the erection of any building for manufacturing, trade or business in the ward of Queenstown. Yet, the lawyer pointed out that more than 55 businesses were operating in that area.

Since then, the number would have increased.

Residential properties are disappearing in old Georgetown faster than the coronavirus. And it is congesting many of the small wards whose streets were not designed to accommodate so many businesses.

Try driving through Albertown’s narrow streets and you will recognise how chaotic the city has become.

The growth of businesses is being compounded by the increase in motor vehicles and in some areas such as Durban Street, Lodge, residents are now parking their vehicles partially on the

pavements.

Georgetown was not designed for the present level of commercial activity and, like London, it was not designed for the number of vehicles that traverse its streets daily. To make matters even worse is that squatting has now become entrenched on most government reserves and public canals and near these reserves are being used as public latrines. And many of the squatters enjoy light and electricity, some even having meters.

The number of residents in old Georgetown has reduced. But this is because of the fact that it has become commercialised. And some persons have opted to move out of the stink, nasty and disordered city.

Some sort of order needs to be brought to the city. It is a nightmare to try to do business in the city. Parking during peak hours is a hassle.

And getting in and out of the traffic is worse than in the crowded city of London.

But nothing is going to change because the powersthat-be want it that way. The business class is buying out residential properties and adding extreme value to them by simply converting them to commercial property. A $20M house when put to commercial use can fetch as much as $60M without any changes to the building. Just by designating it a commercial property adds value.

In the meantime, the working class is suffering

Guyana should have learnt from the experience of cities such as London. It should have long i

But that is not going to happen because in as much as the citizens are indisciplined, there are a capitalist class which is covetous and which is

prepared to sacrifice order on the altar of financial expansion.

Surely, David Granger must know this is comical and demeaning

T

h e A P N U formation led by former president, David Granger, has accepted two new political parties into the group.

This means that there is now a five-member unit in the APNU – PNC, Guyana Action Party, National Democratic Alliance and the entities formed by Jaipaul Sharma and Tabitha SaraboHalley (TSH).

Something strange is taking over the soul of Mr. Granger. If there are people in their sixties in Guyana and the rest of the world that have helped to make the PNC a sustainable organisation the past 40 years, then they have an exigent task to save the PNC from Granger.

After the election fiasco which began in March 2020, Mr. Granger disparaged those small parties in APNU which he alluded to as being paper entities.

This very man has now accepted into APNU’s fold, two groups that in real life are nothing but ideas in the

head of their two founders.

If Mr. Granger continues along this path, the PNC is going to end up with all types of fictional entities as its partners.

Does the PNC just accept a political partnership with someone who simply announced that it formed a political party?

If the answer is yes, then the PNC is going to be besieged with all types of insane people claiming they have birthed parties and will turn up at Mr. Granger’s office or at Joe Harmon’s home seeking membership in APNU. Surely, Granger and Harmon must be conscious of dignity issues involved.

They are bound to look foolish in the eyes of their supporters and Guyanese everywhere.

The inscrutable dimension of all of this is what political and electoral capital the PNC leadership hopes to acquire from embracing phantom organisations.

Let’s start with TSH. Where is her support coming from when she belongs to two worlds that the PNC is well entrenched in? First is gender.

The PNC has adequate and acceptable women activists who will bring in support and resources that TSH cannot match.

Why then not ask TSH to join the PNC and if she refuses then she is on her own? Why provide her with a status that is non-existent – a functional political party.

TSH is also African Guyanese.

The PNC is not short of African Guyanese so what can TSH add? This is where Sharma comes in. He is Indian and Indians have always been in short supply in the PNC. It means that Sharma should have been approached to join the PNC. There was such an opportunity when Sharma during the rigging of the March 2020 election campaign, wrote on his

Facebook page that his dream allowed him to join the PNC. Here is what he wrote, “For it is written that I shall serve H.E. President

Frederick Kissoon D a v i d Granger him only shall I serve.” Surely, Mr. Sharma has to appear comical in the eyes of people to form a political party rather to join the party of the man he was destined to serve.

So Sharma and TSH have chosen not to become members of the PNC. They must feel some obligation, as

politicians, to tell people why they have not. There is a mystery about TSH that must embarrass Granger.

Her name was forwarded by the WPA to be its MP in a rotational mode. But the PNC ignored the WPA’s first choice and chose TSH. WPA recalled her and requested that the PNC replace her with its initial preference.

The PNC retained her as an MP and she resigned from the WPA. So since September 2020, which organisational attachment TSH has had? It had to be PNC since she resigned from WPA and could not have been in the H o u s e a s a W PA parliamentarian.

After sitting in the House for 10 months, TSH has rejected her status as a PNC parliamentarian and has now acquired the label as an MP from Guyana’s Nation Builders Movement, the party she just formed.

As it stands, the opposition in the Guyana

Parliament has an MP from a party other than the PNC and AFC. It cannot get more comical than this. But within the hilarity lies a more important issue – credibility.

How credible is the grouping named APNU? First, there is no active party among the Indigenous people named the Guyana Action Party which was originally formed to pitch for Amerindian votes. Secondly, does Mr. Granger seriously believe there is an organisation named the National Front Alliance?

This is a one-man outfit headed by Mr. Keith Scott.

The APNU fell apart after the 2020 March election. Its constituents, apart from the PNC, were ghosts.

These apparitions have gone back to the cemetery but the PNC has welcomed newer jumbies.

Miner remanded for allegedly killing Moruca man Twenty-eight-year-old Charles Griffith, a miner of Lot 66 Robb Street, Lacytown Georgetown, was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of a Moruca man.

The defendant appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, when the indictable charge was read to him. The charge alleges that on June 23, 2021, at Apaiqua, Middle Mazaruni River, Region Seven, Griffith murdered Shane Blake, 30, a miner of Hymakabra, Moruca Village, Region One. The Chief Magistrate remanded Griffith to prison and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. Griffith is expected to make his next court appearance on July 27, 2021.

According to a police report, Blake was asleep in the abandoned building when he was awakened by the defendant. It is alleged that Griffith was armed with a handgun when he reportedly ordered Blake to put on his clothes and step outside. While doing same,

Blake armed himself with a cutlass and fired a chop wounding Griffith to his shoulder.

However, before Blake could have reacted any further, Griffith retaliated by discharging a round.

The bullet, according to police struck Blake to his upper chest and he fell to the ground as his killer ran away – Griffith was later apprehended and while in custody, he reportedly admitted to shooting Blake.

Gun, ganja, cocaine found at hotdog stand Police on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two on Monday found a plastic bag containing a handgun, several grams of cannabis and suspected cocaine stashed at a hotdog stand in close proximity to the Charity Nursery School.

The discovery was made sometime around 23:35hrs. on Monday night by police ranks following a tip off they had received.

Police said that the serial number on the firearm had been removed. The suspected cannabis, on the other hand, was weighed and amounted to 40 grams while the suspected cocaine weighed 42 grams. The narcotics and firearm have been lodged at the Charity Police Station, and no arrests have since been made.

That blow reportedly floored him again and they began beating him while he was on the ground. A female resident who reportedly observed Manuaf being brutalised by the men began shouting at them to leave him alone and was soon joined by others.

Realising that they were spotted, the men relieved Manuaf of $20,000 – all of the cash, which he had earned throughout the day selling hotdogs – before entering their car and fleeing the scene.

Kaieteur News was told that one of the residents r u s h e d t o M a n u a f ’s assistance and took him home to his family. A report was lodged at the Leonora Police Station and Manuaf was later taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he received medical attention.

He was later referred to

the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to undergo surgery for his broken jaw.

Manuaf had related to the cops that he cannot recall the licence plate number or model of the car, which the suspects were travelling in but remembered that they were East Indian men.

M a n u a f ’s f a m i l y members claimed that he knows one of men who assaulted him and stated that the individual lives in the Anna Catherina area. Police are yet to arrest the suspects but investigations are ongoing.

Haitians found abandoned on Linden-Lethem trail

E

ighty-one (81) Haitians were rescued on Sunday by law enforcement officials after they were f o u n d ab an d o n ed an d wandering along the Linden-Lethem trail around the vicinity of the Kurupukari Crossing.

Based on information received by this publication, two children were amongst the 81 persons that were found.

Kaieteur News understands that the Haitians formed a group to flee to Brazil after the freevisa travel to Guyana for Haitian citizens was recently revoked by President Irfaan Ali. The group was found and picked up by law enforcement officials and was taken to the Lethem Immigration office, where they were held in custody.

However, some of them were released given the fact that their documents are legal and it is alleged that

they were staying legally in Guyana but were attempting to flee to neighbouring country, Brazil before their six-month visas expired.

Some of the Haitians remain in custody as their documents have already expired. It is unknown as to how the group got to the location where they were picked up. It is believed that they were in the jungle for days with limited food and water.

In January 2019, then President David Granger had signed an immigration order for Haiti to be added to the list of countries whose nationals could travel to Guyana without any visa requirement. Last week, President Ali, as published in an Extraordinary edition of the Official Gazette on June 22, 2021, revoked that Immigration Order of 2019 in its entirety with immediate effect.

Ali’s revocation came the same day Attorney

General Anil Nandlall announced that government would be implementing a visa requirement for Haitians and Cubans as a condition of entry into Guyana.

Earlier in June, 10 Haitian nationals were found at the Swiss Hotel, Skeldon, Berbice. It was reported that the Haitians said they were left there by persons who they claimed brought them into Guyana through Suriname and took away their passports and other documents.

Police are currently investigating reports that at least eight Haitians are being held against their will in N u m b e r 7 2 Vi l l a g e , Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six. Jairam Ramlakhan, Regional Commander, confirmed that a report was made and ranks visited the location but no one was found. Ramlakhan said that an investigation has been launched.

COVID-19 protocol compliance wavering Trinidad Guardian It’s almost two months since the country was virtually locked down under the State of Emergency (SoE) to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

While cases have significantly reduced in the following 46 days, they are still high.

But as time progresses for a country already weary from restrictions before the SoE, individual compliance to the COVID-19 protection measures is beginning to waver.

The concerning trend has been observed by stakeholders of the few businesses still allowed to serve the general public at this time.

“When you ask people to stay in lockdown for a

prolonged period of time, the adherence is going to be less and less over time because this has been an exercise in frustration for the general population,” Supermarket’s Association of T&T president Rajiv Diptee told Guardian Media.

“You have to remember, their (the public’s) earning power has been crippled and they are being asked to stay at home for a prolonged period of time.

This is not an acute lockdown, this is a prolonged lockdown so we are having to remind them that this is something for their own benefit.”

Despite the observation, he said it’s only in a few customers as the majority are compliant.

President of the Pharmacy Board, Andrew Rahaman also agreed that people are generally compliant with the protection measures.

However, he admitted they have noticed several people disregarding the guidelines, an occurrence he attributes to pandemic fatigue.

He said they noticed this would be reversed around times where there are worrying developments to the pandemic.

“Especially with the news of the increased deaths and also the new variants that are emerging worldwide I think people getting a little more serious with regards to taking the necessary measures to prevent

Two Region Four residents die from COVID-19, 68 new cases

T

he Ministry of Health yesterday reported that two more persons, who tested positive for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, have died. According to the Ministry, the latest fatalities are that of a 38-year-old man and 39-year-old woman both from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). Both persons passed away on Monday while receiving care at a medical facility.

As a result of this, the country’s COVID-

19 death toll now moves to 468. Further, the Ministry via its daily COVID-19 dashboard recorded 68 new cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 19,959.

The dashboard also shows that 13 patients are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 91 persons in institutional isolation, 1,508 are in home isolation and nine(9) are institutionally quarantined. To date, a total of 17,879 recoveries have been recorded.

Supreme Court says no right to hearing for some immigrants WASHINGTON - (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the government can indefinitely detain certain immigrants who say they will face persecution or torture if they are deported to their native countries.Over the dissent of three liberal justices, the court held 6-3 that the immigrants are not entitled to a hearing about whether they should be released while the government evaluates their claims.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the court that

“those aliens are not entitled to a bond hearing.”

The case involves people who had been previously deported and, when detained after re-entering the United States illegally, claimed that they would be persecuted or tortured if sent back.

One man is a citizen of El Salvador who said he was immediately threatened by a gang after being deported from the U.S. An immigration officer determined that the immigrants had a “reasonable fear” for their

safety if returned to their countries, setting in motion an evaluation process that can take months or years.

The issue for the court was whether the government could hold the immigrants without having an immigration judge weigh in.

The immigrants and the Trump administration, which briefed and argued the case before President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January, pointed to different provisions of immigration law to make their respective cases.

Man charged for killing brother, cries before Magistrate Yesterday, a tearful Quincy Chase was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after he was charged for killing his younger brother.

The 27-year-old man of Lot 34 Norton Street, Werken-Rust made his first court appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where the capital charge of murder was read to him.

Chase, a security guard, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleges that on June 25, at Cummings Street, Bourda, he murdered 24-year-old Paul Anthony Chase.

After remanding him, Chief Magistrate then adjourned the matter to July 22, 2021. Last Friday morning, Chase allegedly killed his younger brother at their mother’s Cummings Street residence. According to the police report, the two would usually visit their mother to have breakfast.

On the day of the incident, the dead man’s mother, Sonia Chase, had told reporters that her sons had a misunderstanding, which then got out of control.

According to her, before the fatal stabbing, she had confronted Chase about something to which he denied. The woman said she did not question her son further but he ended up getting upset. As a result of this, she decided to call her husband who informed her to

Based on police report, Paul received two stabs wounds, one to his neck and the other to his chest. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His body was later removed and taken to Lyken Funeral Parlour for a post mortem examination.

Quincy Chase was arrested and subsequently charged.

Man who robbed stall vendor gets nine months Kishan Alexander appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess, after he was found guilty of a robbery charge and was slapped with nine months imprisonment.

The charge read that on December 19, 2020, on Water and Croal Streets, Georgetown, Alexander, while armed with a knife and in the company of another who was armed with an offensive weapon, robbed Dimeah Jaisiri, a vendor of Stabroek Market,

of one Samsung Galaxy J6 cell phone worth $60,000.

Jaisiri had left his stall and went to a store to purchase a quantity of boots to sell. As he was entering the store, Alexander approached the man and told him to be quiet and hit him several times in the head with the knife.

At the same time, the other individual went into Jaisiri’s pocket and took the phone.

centimetres. Before that, in 33 years the record had only been nudged on by 22 centimetres. Beamon’s world record has gone now, broken

Women’s 200m: FLORENCE GRIFFITH-JOYNER, 21.34 seconds (Seoul, 1988) American Griffith-Joyner brought her unique brand of glamour to the world stage and had eyes popping with her staggering summer of success 33 years ago. She wiped an incredible 0.27 seconds off the 100m world

record when clocking 10.49secs at the US Olympic trials, and at the Games in Seoul she doubled up, setting a 200m global best with a run of 21.56s in the semi-finals before going even quicker still in the final.

Women’s 800m: NADEZHDA OLIZARENKO, one minute 53.43 seconds (Moscow, 1980) This came in a worldrecord run, as Olizarenko led a popular Soviet Union 1-2-3 in the two-lap dash. The current world record, just 0.15secs quicker than Olizarenko’s time, was set three years later. Olizarenko died in 2017, but her Olympic record looks set to stay in the history books for years to come, particularly given Caster Semenya will be absent in Tokyo.

Men’s pole vault: THIAGO BRAZ, 6.03m (Rio, 2016)Braz was a highly popular winner in his native Brazil five years ago, setting a Games record to boot. It would be a major shock if anyone but Armand Duplantis carried off the gold this year, with the American-born Swedish athlete the clear class act in the field. He had a 6.10m clearance in Hengelo in early June, and last year he went over 6.18m indoors. Unless he buckles under the pressure of the Olympics, Duplantis looks good to walk away with gold and a Games record.

Men’s javelin: ANDREAS THORKILDSEN, 90.57m (Beijing, 2008) Possibly the likeliest of all the athletics records to be beaten, Thorkildsen’s goldwinning effort from the Bird’s Nest is surely about to be overtaken.

Germany’s Johannes Vetter had a throw of 96.29m in May, when he hurled the javelin over 90 metres five times in one sixthrow competition. The odd one out in that supreme performance was a world-class 87.27, confirming Vetter as the man to beat.

Women’s 100m: FLORENCE GRIFFITH-JOYNER, 10.62 seconds (Seoul, 1988) Although ‘Flo-Jo’ clocked 10.54s in the 1988 Olympic final, that was a wind-assisted run and is not considered a Games record. Which means it is this 10.62 – set, stupendously, in the heats – that is the target. For years it has looked out of reach, but then Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran 10.63 in Kingston in June, and suddenly it no longer appears quite so insurmountable.

Griffith-Joyner died in 1998 after an epileptic seizure, and over 20 years later her records are still being chased by the sprint elite.

The bearded Frenchman showed no appetite to engage in a desultory final set against the ninth seed, swatting the ball away and rattling through his serves like a man in a hurry to catch a plane.

etro Sport - A tearful Serena Williams was forced to retire in the opening set of her firstround clash at Wimbledon against world number 100 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, becoming visibly emotional on Centre Court.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner, who is still pursuing Margaret Court’s all-time record, started yesterday evening’s match well, though she had heavy strapping on her right thigh.

She broke Sasnovich in the Bulgarian’s second service game, but was immediately broken back

herself and then went off court for a medical timeout.

She returned but looked in clear pain and discomfort, breaking down in tears at one point as she struggled to move around the court.

In the seventh game of the first set, she collapsed to the floor and could not continue, retiring from the match in tears and leaving Centre Court to a standing ovation.

‘I’m so sad for Serena, she’s a great champion,’ said Sasnovich on court after her unexpected progression to the second round.

South Africa defended 19 runs off the last two overs; Kagiso Rabada defended eight off the last two balls as South Africa took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Producing an Olympian is Coach Blake’s Confident Allicock can win Guyana’s proudest moment 2nd Olympic medal in Tokyo

orty-seven-yearold Forgotten Y o u t h s Foundation (FYF) Coach Sebert Blake is on the threshold of fulfilling his third dream when number 19th rated Bantamweight in the World, Keevin Allicock steps into the ring in Tokyo for the 2021 Olympics next month, Blake would have accomplished two of his dreams.

In 2010 when Shondell Alfred knocked out American based Guyanese Corrine Van Ryck DeGroot at the Princess Hotel in Providence, Guyana to win the WIBA title to become the second World Champion from Albouystown after Andrew ‘Six head’ Lewis won Guyana’s first World title in 2001, Coach Blake had finally produced a World Champion.

Blake says any Coach’s dream is for his fighter to win a World title and rates that as one of his most memorable moment as a Coach.

“The defence of her title was very pleasing since we worked really hard and her tough preparation, and it paid off with her spectacular knock-out of DeGroot,” said Blake.

Now 11 years-later Blake, who grew up in the rough environment of Albouystown, has produced an Olympian and is confident his Boxer will win a Medal in Japan which will realise his third dream and m a k e t h e 2 2 - y e a r- o l d Allicock only the second Boxer from Guyana to win an Olympic Medal.

Mike Parris gave Guyana and the English speaking Caribbean it’s only Medal in Boxing when he won Bronze in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Allicock is the first Guyanese pugilist to qualify for the Olympics since John Douglas lost in the first round of the 1996 Olympics 25 years ago.

As a Boxer, Blake attended the 2000 Olympic trials in Florida which prematurely brought the Curtains down on his Boxing career but opened the door to his Coaching Career which began in 2001 at the FYF in Albouystown.

news that his most talented fighter had qualified for the biggest event in Amateur Sport.

“What ran through my head… is this is faith… God is great, God is great! Keevin really make this happen because of his strong belief and commitment. Yes, I put in my work but Keevin really forced me…pushed me over the edge to get to this level, so I was overjoyed. My thoughts were WOW we did it,” disclosed a proud Blake who, along with Allicock, departed Guyana yesterday for a three-week training stint in Russia ahead of the Olympics.

“I am very confident that Keevin has the ability to bring home a medal for Guyana. We have been working for a pretty long time…yes the Covid-19 affected our preparation but we have some time and we will see how best we can do with it.

This is our dream…first qualifying for the Olympics … and second winning a medal. So we hit the first stage which is qualification and now it’s time for us to go and try our utmost best to medal,” added Blake, who won a Bronze medal at the 1997 Pan Am Games in Colombia.

“Because of the covid-19 protocols we had to follow, we just mainly tried to do strength training in most of the activities…getting him physical strong in terms of endurance…long distance running and so on.

We got some sparring in despite the pandemic but the quality of sparring partners that we wanted, we were not getting.

But now in Russia we will have some of the guys

Yes I think he is about seventy-five percent in shape and in the next three weeks get him into the high nineties in terms of readiness,” continued the hard working Coach who, on his first overseas trip as a boxer in 1992, won a Silver Medal at the CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas before winning Gold medals at the Caribbean level in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad.

Coach Blake, who in 2014, joined National and GDF Head Coach Terrence Poole as the only Guyanese International Boxing Association (AIBA) certified three-star Boxing Coaches, said producing an Olympian was his proudest

moment.

“Most defiantly this is my proudest moment. This is the Olympics we talking about…this is my dream of Coaching a boxer to the Olympics.

In 2016 we went to Barbados and Guyana captured 10 Gold Medals and a Silver in the Caribbean Development Boxing Tournament.

This was the most medals Guyana had ever won in a Caribbean Boxing overseas Tournament and I said then that I will give my all and once the resources were there I will give my best to produce an Olympian.

We did not get all that we needed but I could rest assured that the President of the Guyana Boxing Association (Steve Ninvalle) helped out in so many ways and we were able to get at least one boxer, in Keevin Allicock, to go to all levels of

competition.

In 2016 Keevin was just a Junior and in 2017 he went into the youth category where he won silver at the Yo u t h C o m m o n w e a l t h Games, he went back to the CAC Games…the Pan American Games, the South American Games and the World Championships and all these tournaments were stepping stones or preparation for where are at now…the Olympics.

Keevin went through all those phases and I was instrumental in him being able to compete and now we got it and this is my proudest moment,” Blake posited.

“I want to say to the public to hold his faith, let’s support Keevin.

This is his biggest dream he has been holding his faith and asking God for guidance and protection…let’s be hopeful.

Keevin will go out there

and give his best for Guyana.

The entire 83,000 square miles will be resting on his shoulders and I know he is capable. Let’s send out a positive vibe for him.

I encourage all those in Guyana and over a million more in the diaspora…let’s all send up that blessings and prayers for him because we will need that divine intervention to get us over the hill.

It’s been going good so far but we still need that support from the Guyanese public,” stated Blake who was the Coach of Keevin Allicock and Colin Lewis in the 2019 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

“I want to say thanks to the company I work with…the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) for all the support they have given me throughout the years as a boxer and now as a Coach.

They have given me time off to take Keevin to Russia and to the Olympics and I have had a lot of investment from GPL. I am very grateful and thankful to be working with such a great Company and I would not trade it for nothing, that’s the Company I am married to and they always support me,” said the experienced Coach who is employed as a Network design specialist with the IDB GOG AU Power Utility Upgrade Programme at GPL. Blake, who has two sons (Trevor and Quincy) and has been married to Samantha Daniels-Blake for over 26 years, also thanked the GOA and GBA’s President Steve Ninvalle for giving him and his Olympic Medal hopeful their full support.

Last-gasp Dovbyk winner sends Ukraine into first Euro quarter-final GLASGOW, (Reuters) Artem Dovbyk netted a dramatic winner in stoppage time at the end of extra time as Ukraine squeezed past 10man Sweden 2-1 at Hampden Park yesterday to book a Euro 2020 quarterfinal clash with England.

GBA names five-member team GVF to host Intra-association for AMBC youth qualifiers

he Guyana B o x i n g Association (GBA) is scheduled to send a five-man team, including four fighters and one coach, to the American Boxing Association (AMBC) Youth championships qualifying tournament that will be held in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico from July 11th to 19th.

According to President of the Guyana Boxing

Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, the team comprises of several of Guyana’s most promising young pugilists and it will be led by Caribbean Champion Alesha J a c k m a n w i t h Tr a v i s Inverary, Wayne Castello and Patrick Harvey the rest of the members on the team.

The coach identified to accompany the team is AIBA 3-star and National Award recipient, Terrence Poole M.S.

Independence Cup playoffs rescheduled The playoff stage of the We C a r e C o m m u n i t y Services and Promotion Inaugural Independence softball cup which was scheduled for Sunday last at NOC ground, Region two will now be played at a later date.

The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) is scheduled to host a highly anticipated indoor match on Friday, July 2nd at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall (CASH), on Homestretch Avenue, behind closed doors.

This information was shared by competitions committee member and player, Kristoff Shepperd, who will also be part of the action.

The exhibition match will be contested between the men’s senior national squad and the men’s under23 side.

The senior side will be comprised of the following list of players: Quacy Matheson, Dester Hoppie, Devendra Latchman, Vance Harding, Juan Valasques, Shemroy Ross, Klondyke Rodney, Ian Bagot, Creston Rodney, Trevon McRae, Corwin Richards and Beepaul Bando.

Meanwhile, the under23 squad reads: Kristoff Shepperd, Levi Nedd, Tyrone Farley, Montel Denny, Ronaldo Bobb, Daniel Joseph, Steffon Norah, Tyreece Farley, Andre Jagnandan, Terrence Groenhart and Andy Rohoman.

This exhibition game is very much anticipated since the GVF didn’t have any competition since February 2020, just before the pandemic hit, in the Lenny Shuffler invitational right at the National Gymnasium.

And, the last international tournament the GVF contested was the Inter Guiana Goodwill tourney in French Guiana, in February 2021 as well.

GVF Competitions committee member and under-23 player, Kristoff Shepperd. has halted competitive play, Shepperd shared with Kaieteur Sport that the GVF has maintained its

encouragement of players to stay active in terms of fitness and all-round wellness.

In terms of plans to host tournaments, Shepperd highlighted that the association is awaiting word from the National Covid-19 task force. “We have several tournaments planned but due to the (lack of) permission from the covid task force to r u n o ff t h o s e e v e n t s , everything was halted. These tournaments include a GVF league that is projected to run for a couple of months, a beach volleyball t o u r n a m e n t , SPIKEDOWN2K21 which is a yearend tournament along with other tentative events that will cater for both male and female participation.”

According to Shepperd, “The ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has given the Guyana Volleyball Federation permission for the senior team to train two days a week while following covid protocols.”
