Solar power is cheaper than gas

I

n the world of energy, there are few sources of information more credible than the International Energy Agency (IEA). It pays for all Guyanese, regardless of what their leaders tell them, to listen to what the IEA is sharing with the world, and consider its meaning for Guyana. This is regardless of the politics, or whether they are loyalists, cult leadership followers, or fence sitters.

This has to do with our well-being, and what makes for the soundest economic sense for us, nationally and as ordinary citizens and consumers.

What the IEA has put before the world goes against what Guyanas most powerful leader had to say about cheap energy source (“Solar power 20 to 50% cheaper than coal and gas -IEA” -KN June 27). We are not concerned about coal since that has little to no relevance to us. It is that mention of gas coming in second to solar as a source of the cheaper energy that attracted our attention, from what the IEA concluded in its World Energy Outlook 2020. Gas is what the PPP/C Government, under the heavy pushing of Vice President Jagdeo, has made the centrepiece of its solution to currently expensive and unreliable electricity supply from the national grid, under the control of the Guyana Power and Light, Inc. (GPL). As many Guyanese know, the GPL has failed miserably in delivering dependable energy, despite much money put in it.

Now, with our discoveries of massive quantities of oil offshore, the plan of the Government and the Vice President is to transport gas to the Wales terminal for conversion into energy for the GPL to distribute nationwide.

Vice President Jagdeo has been in the forefront of talking up the pluses, according to him, of his personally favoured gas-to-energy project. He has made it his duty to cast into disrepute and dismiss anyone who dares to disagree with him on this most expensive of national projects. Just a little while back, the Vice President was very firm and very clear that renewables, including solar, were “very, very expensive” when compared to his much-favoured gas-to-energy project.

From the inception, he brooks absolutely no interference, nor will he give any listening to anything that clashes with his claim.

Since it is no less an authority than the IEA coming forward and laying out the case that solar is cheaper than gas in the generation of electricity, we wait to see what the Vice Presidents next argument, or difference of position, would be. We dont think that he can, just as swiftly, and as cavalierly, dismiss the position of a body like the IEA. The IEA is not the only reputable source for information of this kind (only the latest), as others have done so, including the United Nations.

What the IEA laid out was that once three conditions are met, then the reality, using the authority and prestige of the IEA, is that solar as a source of energy can be beat, as it is the cheapest. The three conditions are: 1) being in the best locations; 2) accessing the most favourable financing terms; and 3) benefiting from the best surrounding policy architecture. We have abundant sunshine, which takes care of the first requirement. Given our prospects, and the high regard for renewables in powerful financing institutions, we doubt that gaining access to most favourable financing terms would be a difficulty for this country. The gorilla on the table is the supporting policy regime that speaks sincerely and consistently about renewables in front of any gas-toenergy visions.

The problem with this is that Vice President Jagdeo is hellbent on moving ahead with his gas-to-energy project, and for reasons known only to him, as to why the undue haste to get started with it. This project has in excess of US$1B price tag, and the final price is still unknown. But Jagdeo rushes ahead, as if his life depended on it.

Something is not right about this picture, and this comes into sharper focus with the knowledge that solar is much cheaper than gas as a source of clean energy. The question is why, Mr. Jagdeo? Why gas and not solar power?

Is Glenn Lall smarter than the PNC and PPP combined?

DEAR EDITOR, I read about former top Government officials on the PNC side and the Government side could not explain the status of the 2% royalty whether its a deductible cost to the oil companies or not. Isnt this pathetic that our leaders dont know what they signed in the contract? Who is minding the store? Why is it that a private citizen, Mr. Glenn Lall, has to ask these kinds of questions?

Isnt that the job of the Government, their lawyers and accounting people? How is it that Mr. Glenn who did not go to College can ask these smart questions that trip up both the Government, the AGs Office, and the Opposition. Even the smartest man in Guyana, the VP of oil, could not provide a ready answer. Mr. Glenn surely knows more about the oil deal than our leaders who are supposed to be minding the store. Nation, listen to what Glenn says!

Also, in the Glenn Lall lawsuit on behalf of the people of Guyana challenging the tax

provisions in the 2016 Petroleum Agreement whereby oil companies are not actually paying taxes to Guyana, the Attorney General made an application for a one-month extension to file his submission in the tax case.

This was followed by a similar request for more time made by the ExxonMobil subsidiary - Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL).

The Government and Exxon are on the same side in this case fighting the people represented by Glenn. How will the PPP explain that in 2025 when they ask for your vote?

The application for the extension by the Attorney General made on June 22 provides a number of reasons for the request for time. Among them, the Attorney General noted that Lalls case raises highly technical and complex questions of tax law (which itself is a highly complex, and specialised area of law) and contract law. Glenn has them

all tied up in a legal tizzy.

They have to call for back-up help to figure out the tax issues. So, it seems we can trust Mr. Glenn more when he talks about the bad oil contract than we can trust the PPP and PNC - the sellouts. The PPP and PNC are on the same side operating as Public Relations spokesmen for the oil companies defending the bad contract that rapes our country.

Nation, why is the PPP even defending a sellout PNC-signed contract? Do they want Glenn Lall to win or lose? Do they want the people of Guyana our poor huddled masses to win or lose? Do they want Exxon to win?

This now raises the question of how did the PNC sign a contract and do not know what the tax provisions mean, whether they are legal or not?

Why did the PNC sign that contract without understanding the meaning of the various provisions? Was there duress involved? Who pressured them to sign in a hurry

without understanding what they are signing? How could the PNC cabinet do something like that? And if the PPP cares about this sin, why are they not doing a Commission of Inquiry into how this contract got signed, while Mr. Trotman is still available?

Why did the PPP not go through the contract with a fine-tooth comb and unearth and fix all the likely illegal clauses such as the Tax Clause, Stability Clause, and the oil companies getting 600 rather than 60 blocks?

Thank you Mr. Glenn and your Attorney Mohamed Ali, for fighting for all the poor, weak, dispossessed masses of Guyana.

You are the peoples champion. Your labour of love will not be in vain. Good always triumphs over evil. Continue to hold their feet to the fire. If not you, who; if not now, when? Its our country and our wealth and we must care!

Needed: A well-coordinated Agriculture Development Strategy DEAR EDITOR, Food Security has become an urgent international challenge. Guyana has asserted that it can become the centre of agricultural development amongst the Caribbean territories.

So far as some can tell however, there has been no identifiable approach to the formulation of a comprehensive related strategy so far.

One looks forward to seeing a map that would display the locations of the various produce to be cultivated, and the respective markets to be targeted.

More importantly, one misses specific reference to any coordinated training of (identified) producers, for they must be taught how to deliver the highest quality to the most selective markets, locally and overseas.

It is in this regard therefore that it becomes necessary to enquire whether any or all of the following institutions have been invited to develop and/or expand relevant programmes aimed at upgrading the skills and competencies of the myriad of prospective farmers; the institutions being: - National Agricultural Research & Extension Institute - Guyana Livestock Development Authority - Guyana School of Agri-

culture, (complemented by the Guyana Marketing Corporation) amongst whom synchronisation of curricula of in-house training and actual field experience would not be difficult to implement, centred as there are as virtual neighbours. (The GSA also operates in the Essequibo district).

Additionally however, there is the opportunity of available sugar estate land, and with the obvious concentration on the development of Region Six, Skeldon would appear to offer tremendous scope for well organised and expansive development, albeit within the authority of the Guyana Sugar Corporation.

In this connection it has to be reminded that once before the sugar industry did absorb and manage an Other Crops Division shortly after its nationalisation. The following were the projects involved: - Wauna Oil Palm Project located in the North West District - San Jan Oil Palm Project West Bank Demerara - Charity Cassava Mill Essequibo Coast - Enmore Cassava Experimental Project East Coast Demerara - Blairmont Fish Farm West Berbice

- Manaribisi State Farm Corentyne, East Berbice But even well before then, by 1959 Bookers Sugar Estates had engaged in a programme of other agricultural development albeit through cooperatives. This included the lease of lands for: - Rice and short-term crops 4722 acres amongst 10 Cooperative Societies - General agriculture 461 acres to 2 Cooperative Societies - Cane farming 831 acres to Belle Vue Cooperative Society The foregoing record should incite some creative thinking about how to utilise the a v a i l a b l e l a n d s a t Skeldon Estate located in a community known for its track record for productive entrepreneurs, several of whom should be compensated for the depletion of

their cane farming ventures when this estate collapsed under the current Administration. From all reports, the managerial capacity already obtains on the estate. It is only now left for the effective coordination of a carefully designed agricultural development plan, preferably funded by a specialist financial agency, managed to ensure returns on investment; rather than grants which can have the effect of diminishing self-worth.

The developmental programme must aim at upgrading the independence of human beings, who can be respected by their progeny; but first, and most critically, by those who must lead the whole process. Grants simply would not contribute to sustainability.

Heads should roll and the first should be the Minister of Home affairs

DEAR EDITOR, Yesterday morning, the 28th June protest commenced at Golden Grove over the killing of one Quindon Bacchus after information disseminated stated that the police responsible was released. It would seem that this information was false and to my mind, those responsible for this should be held accountable.

That the residents were angry was understandable.

However, it was unfair for innocent people and their properties to be targeted.

One would have expected someone from the police or the ministry to have gone on the scene using loud speakers to inform the protestors that those responsible for the death of Mr. Bacchus were still in custody and that the matter was being investigated by the Police Complaint authority. This may have calmed the situation.

The protest continued and people s properties were destroyed by the protestors.

Having said that, the issue is what type of response was required by the police. From live videos, police safeguarded the police stations by blocking any entrance to the compound. They were ef-

fective.

The million dollar question is, “How is it what took place at Mon Repos was allowed to happen”. The people complained that there were no police presence to protect the people and so as a consequence, a minibus was torched, vendors were robbed and stalls were set on fire. Imagine the protestors were allowed to traverse all the way from Golden Grove to Mon Repos where they did their damage and no service and protection from the police.

In my humble opinion, heads should roll and the first should be the Minister of Home affairs. There have been serious complaints about the “effective” functioning of his Ministry.

This should be regarded as the last straw. In any other country, the Minister would resign.

I emphasize, what took place yesterday could have and should have been prevented. I am calling for the resignation of the Minister and if he does not then the President should send him home.

Local Content and the two Logistics companies DEAR EDITOR, In a June 25, 2022 article, “RAMPS under pressure in Guyana” that appeared in the Trinidads Daily Express newspapers, some interesting details were revealed.

The gentleman, Deepak Lall, applied for his Guyanese citizenship in June 2021 and was issued his Guyanese passport on September 9, 2021 a mere three (3) months after application. An open challenge to all where else can one be approved for citizenship in such a short time period, even if that person has met all the legal requirements?

During the debate in Guyana on the Local Content Bill (LCB) in December 2021, several challenges were highlighted regarding the route that the Government was taking, as well as a submission of proposed amendments to the existing Bill, to avoid some of the most oblivious pitfalls in the Bill. All the proposed amendments were rejected by the Government in their rush to pass this bill and their continued posture of a lack of inclusivity.

During the debates, it was argued that for an effective LCB, our Guyana Citizenship Act should also be amended and that before passage of such a Bill, a completely new immigration policy should be prepared. However, in the interim, the Interpretation of a Guyanese National should be “Guyanese national” means a citizen of Guyana; by birth this was not proposed to exclude persons rightly entitled to take up citizenship via the various prescribed routes, however it was a stop gap suggestion, which would allow existing Guyanese nationals to have access to the provisions of the LCB immediately. It was proposed that shortly thereafter, a comprehensive Citizenship amendment should be tabled, where the amended Act should include some residency requirements, as is standard in most other countries. Concerns were also raised about the rumor that the naturalization process was susceptible to corruption practices, and that Guyanese Citizenship could soon be up for sale.

Another proposed amendment was for any application that was rejected, the applicant would have the right of appeal to an independent review panel appointed by the Minister, comprising of not less than three persons, one of whom must be from civil society such an amendment would have gone a long way in addressing the current impasse between the secretariat and the logistics operator. Yet another proposed amendment was that A Contractor, Sub-Contractor or Licensee without the written permission of the Minister, acting on the advice of the Secretariat and the Local Content Oversight Committee, shall not enter any contract in excess of three (3) years this was proposed to allow local firms who do not currently have the required technical requirements, a definitive time period to acquire same and the ability to compete in the near future. Currently, contracts of between 5 10 years are being awarded, so the next available opportunity for an emerging local

logistics company to win the Exxon contract will at minimum be 2027.

There was much laughter and heckling from the Government side, when the issue of the proposed LCB conflicting with Article 7 of Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas - an issue that has since come to light and is yet to be resolved and which may eventually engage our apex court. All examples of issues and recommendations which with time and discussions across the floor would have gone a long way to providing a clear path to dealing with local content issues now and in the future.

Finally, Stabroek News has been conducting an excellent exercise in investigative journalism on the linkage with a sitting Minister of Government and a local logistics company. The outcome of this investigation as well as the award of the new logistics contract is due in November 2022 the outcome of which will be enlightening to the public.

Protests - there is only one valid kind DEAR EDITOR, Peaceful protests under certain ingrained conditions provide the best value, possess the most durable outcomes. I recognise that I am speaking to myself since the more aggressive easily dismiss what I place in public.

Regrettably, it is becoming more apparent that protests, in all their different shades and intensities, are going to be the order of the day going forward. Whatever form they take, the greatest care must be taken that protests get their messages across in an appropriate manner, with fairness and justice being the prime objectives.

Already, I detect that there will be problems with this.

Because even in those instances of the well-organized, well-planned, and well-controlled protests, there is the first probability of outlier sections of people breaking away, running rampant. The second concern is that because of heavy perceptions of lawlessness in high places by high officials, protesters in the streets and villages have little to zero patience with listening to what is moderate and orderly. They are willing to run the risk of being labeled lawless themselves, which does no justice to their cause, regardless of how justly it is founded and powered.

Guyanese are this fed-up with what they believe is a return to targeted killings, the return of corrupt practices, and the return of a thinly veiled way of governance and life that

fools no one. Leadership platitudes about democracy, the rule of law, transparency, and fair play are all laughed at, and concluded to be part of the game that wreaks havoc with our state of mind, and the peace of our environment.

As I see it, anything and everything now becomes rich soil for escalation into protests. The thinking is that, if this is the way it has to be, then let it be. My fear is that politics has to make its inevitable intrusions and associations, and this compounds further what is on the ground, as already stirred and primed.

Second, there is the thought that many believe that swamping the streets and locking down this country are the alternatives left to bring this uncontrolled, unhearing, and unresponsive government to its senses.

I go back for a moment: well-organized, well-disciplined, and well-presented are priceless for sustained protests and the values that emerge from those. My concern is whether we have any patience, interest, tolerance left for such cautions. I think not.

There is a school of thinking that politeness and calmness have never brought about change, the radical changes needed. The more radically inclined have little energy for such niceties, such playing by the rules of the oppressors. The trouble is that when there is a profusion of such heated people in this

tiny society, then calls for a measured approach, and Gandhian practices, go out the window. As we all know, it doesnt take much for points of contention to flare into flashpoints here. When, and it is only a matter of when, such are coordinated tactically, then there is little to hold us together. Citizens are looking for that catalyst, that right opening to vent their frustrations, their condemnations, their visions (whatever those are). To repeat what I have been sharing in spaces like these, huge swaths of the Guyanese populace are at their boiling point. Though it may seem a stretch, this country is never far from its breaking point. The forces are there; so, too, are the armories for aggression; I am not speaking of plowshares.

It is clear that the attitudes and actions of this PPP

Government and its leaders in a broad range of settings have contributed to what is a combustible situation under the surface gloss. Unfortunately, there will be those dreadful developments of trapped innocents, the luck of the draw, and collateral damage. I think that the East Coast provides a glimpse of where we could be heading.

We can continue to insult and degrade one another politically (meaning, racially); or we can invite and engage and workout. Somehow, I dont see the latter happening. As to how long we will rush forward and fall back like this, I leave that alone. I envision that we have some problems ahead. They may not be handled in the best way possible. Peacefully may just not be available at that time.

Exxon needs to pivot quickly DEAR EDITOR, The recent documentary on Exxon that also discussed Guyana was concerning.

Their energy portfolio is not transitioning as quickly as it needs to, while their research and growth initiatives are out of sync with what is needed to improve the health of the planet and its people.

Continuing to focus on biofuel that leverages our forests which help to reduce the damage that fossil fuels have caused to the climate is going to accelerate the problem being faced by the planet and its occupants, including the animals. At the same time, they are pushing the use of chemicals and petroleum based products in our daily lives via several high consumption industries without providing a solution for the current and future waste problems that have resulted in plastics polluting our land and seas. The surge in petroleum product related cancers and the unhealthy impact on our food, needs to be a higher priority in Exxons portfolio strategy.

As mentioned previously, Exxon has shown that it has the capability to work effectively on our sea floor, yet wave energy is not a top priority in its portfolio develop-

ment. Where are the plans to harness the increasing energy in the climate as seen in the super hurricanes and increasing level of wave energy? If Exxon is truly a technology company then they should be amongst the leaders in developing solar, wind and wave energy harnessing technology. Their internal portfolio development and acquisition pipeline strategy needs to be in tune with the future needs of our planet and its inhabitants.

The new board members that are environmentally friendly have to help drive the cultural change required at Exxon. Making money is important, but it must be done sustainably and with good corporate stewardship that keeps the long-term health of its consumers in mind. Exxon must show that its leadership can make the company a game changer while addressing the urgent need to course correct towards an environmentally friendly way in which the planet fuels its energy needs. Only by pivoting quickly towards wave, wind and solar will Exxon be able to gain a responsible leadership position in the Energy Industry.

Improving the lives of the aged - do not tax DEAR EDITOR, Many suggestions have been made on ways to improve the lives and wellbeing of our aged citizens. Since such persons have to work to sustain themselves including accessing genuinely good and stress-free healthcare

and transportation, I would like to suggest that income from work be not taxed by the national revenue agencies and that the purchase of an economy car be also free of taxation. Hopefully, Government will consider these suggestions, which will surely improve the wellbeing of our senior citizens.

on behalf of the oil companies. While they are at it, let them also declare daily the current productions and analyses of oil and gas.

Then we can believe these Anti-Corruption calls for transparency and accountability.

The protests are being politicised T

he tragedy of per sons should not be exploited for narrow and selfish political purposes. Unfortunately, the APNU+AFC has opted to use two sets of tragedies for political mileage.

The fatal shooting of Quindon Bacchus, a young resident of Golden Grove is a tragedy to his family and community. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated by the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).

The PCA is an independent body established in 1989 under the Presidency of Hugh Desmond Hoyte. It is not answerable to the Guyana Police Force or to the government.

Its main functions are to investigate complaints of misconduct by members of the Guyana Police Force and to supervise investigations of certain serious crimes alleged to have been committed by members of the Police Force.

The PCA has since issued a statement explaining that the investigation, into the death of Bacchus, is proceeding rapidly but that there are certain lawful protocols which have to be complied with before the investigation is wrapped-up. Those protocols, no doubt, relate to the requirements that the PCA has to forward the investigation report to the Director of

Public Prosecutions along with comments as to whether or not the investigation was done to its satisfaction and, if not, why not.

A report on two online sources is said to have triggered unlawful protest action yesterday morning. Barricades were placed to block the East Coast Public Road at various points.

The media must desist from referring to the unlawful barricading of roads by protestors as peaceful. Such actions are not considered as peaceful. Protests are no longer just about registering concerns or expressing opposition. They have become an instrument to create disturbance. Increasingly, it is now the norm that protestors do not feel that they are making their point unless they create disturbances.

The protests cascaded into robbery, looting, arson and destruction of property.

It is ironic that the protestors who were demanding justice did not see the injustice, which their actions triggered.

The family of the Bacchus have reportedly condemned the violence at Mon Repos.

What happened yesterday at Mon Repos had its roots in development at West Coast Berbice in 2020. In those protests, persons were beaten and robbed and vehicles set alight similarly. The roadway was also blocked.

The police should have photographic evidence and footage of some of those involved in violence. This evidence was all over social media.

In one instance, a young man was seen pulverising a minibus driver. The footage of the incidence was posted on social media, as were other incidents of criminality including images of those who were lighting fires.

No one was ever brought to justice for those attacks.

The police let bygones be bygones, and this inaction emboldened the protestors to do what they did yesterday.

The President and his Attorney General have however said that yesterdays unlawful actions will not be without consequences. The President has demanded that the police arrest and bring to justice those who are openly damaging public and private property and instigating lawlessness.

The Attorney General noted that burning, looting, inflicting grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to public and private property, riotous conduct, robbery with violence and treasonous statements are all offences under the law. He urged that the rule of law must prevail. We shall have to wait and see whether persons will be brought to justice for yesterdays mayhem.

APNU+AFC has issued a statement in which it condemned the criminality involved in the protests. They said such actions undermined and distract from the legitimate aims of the protests.

ances many Guyanese feel about the PPP/Cs discrimination and governance.

By this additional interjection, the APNU+AFC has seemingly not only already decided on the guilt of the police in the death of Bacchus but is also seeking to politicise the issue by extending it to poor governance. To seek to exploit tragedy for narrow political gains is

Prosecution to wrap up in 9-y-old’s rape, murder case (JAMAICA OBSERVER) - The prosecution is expected to wrap up its case on Tuesday against a teenage boy accused of raping, buggering, and strangling to death a nine-year-old girl. He was 13 at the time of the incident four years ago.

When the trial resumes in the Westmoreland Circuit Court, two forensic experts in the area of DNA are expected to take the witness stand.

One is the head of the forensic lab and also a biology expert. The two were expected to give evidence on Monday but were unavailable.

The prosecution has a total of 14 witnesses, but only eight were called to the stand as the defence and the prosecution agreed on statements from the other six.

It’s not clear if the defence will be calling any witnesses.

However, they also have the option of making a no-case submission.

If a no-case submission is not made, both the prosecution and the defence will give their closing remarks, and then Justice Courtney Daye will make his summation.

The accused allegedly sexually assaulted and killed the young girl, whom he knew, after she accepted his invitation to pick apples as they walked home from school on June 5, 2018.

A post-mortem report presented in court last week showed that the child died of asphyxia caused by manual strangulation. She also had lacerations of the vagina and anus.

On Monday, the prosecution called two witnesses to the stand. The first was a senior forensic scientist who had received from the police sealed packages containing samples and items belonging to the victim on June 7, 2018.

And he told the reporters that the former administration left office without paying the bills.

“We now had to pay the bills and the whole question of sustainability and what is the best use of money has to

be taken into account,” Hilaire said.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Milton Desir has explained that the police K9 Unit was in use.

“However now I believe there are some developments I would mention later,” he told reporters on Monday.

The comments on Monday about police dogs came amid concern over a spike in gun violence.

A day earlier, two men were gunned down within hours of each other at Faux A Chaud, Castries, raising the homicide toll to 33.

Dr. Ernest Hilaire, in whose constituency the killings occurred, said it was painful to learn of the gun violence.

He noted the need for a broader approach to fighting crime in this society, declaring that the problem was deeper than the availability of firearms.

And Hilaire also explained that the solution was not limited to stiffer penalties like the recent measure tabled in parliament to discourage the use of illegal guns.

According to the Castries South MP, effective policing, profound behaviour change, and conflict resolution are among the required measures.

$45M estimated to extend Festival City Polyclinic

he Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) will soon be extending the recently commissioned Polyclinic located in Festival City, Georgetown for an estimated cost of $45 million.

The project, which opened on Tuesday at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board

Scottish independence: 19 October 2023 proposed as date for referendum (BBC NEWS) Scotland’s first minister has proposed 19 October 2023 as the date for another referendum on independence.

Nicola Sturgeon said the question would be the same as in the last referendum in 2014: “Should Scotland be an

independent country?”.

Ms Sturgeon has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask for formal consent for the vote to be held.

She said she would press on with her plan if this was not granted by the UK government.

But she stressed that any referendum would need to be “indisputably lawful” and constitutional - with the Supreme Court being asked to rule on whether the Scottish government has the power to hold a vote without UK government approval.

The UK government said it would examine the first minister’s proposals, but stressed that its position that “now is not the time” for another referendum had not changed. Windies Masters wing out to UK for the Marlborough Cup Tour - Dhaniram brothers to turn out for the West Indies The West Indies O-50 team will still be missing some key players for this UK tour but have been able to put together a very formidable lineup for this maiden tour of England and Wales.

West Indies will be without some of its key players: William Lashley, Ve j a i S e o n a r i n e , S h i v Seeram, Krish Harricharan and Lawrence Pooran.

Lashley had his first tour in Houston, Texas in March of this year and made quite an impact with both bat and ball.

Vejai Seonarine had a very lean series in Texas which was in stark contrast to his wonderful series during the Americas Cup in Canada last August when he had skyrocketed to the number 2 ranking in the world. He has now dropped to number 8 but remains the highest ranked WI player in the world O-50s.

However, Windies will be buttressed with the inclusion of the Dhaniram brothers, Sunil and Sudesh, who are both available for this important tour. Both brothers have previous experience in English conditions and will be expected to play a major role for the Windies Masters in this tour. Sunil is currently ranked at #46 in the World rankings after just one series

in the Americas Cup but had played 44 ODIs and 11 T20Is for Canada.

It's quite surprising that Sudesh is not currently ranked in the top 50 but will obviously want to correct that anomaly. The other West Indians in the top 50 rankings of the world are: Azad Mohammed-#25, dropping several points from #4;Fareed Hosein at #35; Zamin Amin at #39; and Mohan Harihar at #40. All these guys will be looking to improve on their current rankings on this tour with the others looking to break into the top 50, a release form the organisers informed.

Kenny Girdharry had a great series with the ball in Texas where he took the most wickets and surely will be spearheading the bowling attack for the West Indies.

Kenny will have 2 other quality seamers in the team in Mark Audain, who is rejoining the team after a brief hiatus since the 2020 World Cup in South Africa and Mohan Harihar who had an excellent series with the ball in Canada during the Americas Cup. Fareed Hosein is one of the top all rounders in the team and the only leg spinner in the squad and is expected to be a key

player for the West Indies should they come out on top in this tournament. Ishwar Maraj, who captained the Canadian team in the ICC World Cup, had some good starts in Texas but did not carry on for big scores. He will have to temper his shot selection and bat for longer periods.

Anthony Sahadeo is the only newcomer to the West Indies side slotting in as its first-choice keeper and will be looking to cement his place in the team for the O50s World Cup next March.

Sadeo had a few good starts also in Texas but must concentrate harder and bat longer for his team. Both Sahadeo and Sadeo are attacking batsmen and if they are chosen to open could form a very lethal pair as a left-handed and right-handed combination. Ishwar Maraj has also opened for the West Indies in previous series.

There are quite a few contenders for the opening slots, namely: Mark Audain, Kris Ramdat, Roy Singh, and Azad Mohammed.Bidhesi is a seasoned veteran having represented Trinidad & Tobago in the Regional tournament, had a decent tour in Texas but was crippled with a groin injury. He is now

back to full fitness and will be rearing to go.

Once again, the evergreen Zamin Amin, former captain of the USA team to the ICC World Cup, will be leading the West Indies team in the UK which consists of 12 @ O50s players and 4 @ O60s players, namely: Roy Singh, Rick Ali, Kris Ramdat& Hafiz Mohamed. CWIMA made a deliberate decision to include a few O60s players for this tour aimed at giving them some valuable match practice prior to their O60s World Cup in Brisbane, Australia in September.

3rd with 2 practice ODI games against Wales in Wales, then travel to London for another 2 practice ODIs at Broxbourne and Gravesend against England and India respectively.

The final leg of the tour will take place at the Marlborough College ground with all 4 teams playing each other once in 3 back-to-back games for the Marlborough Cup. The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has announced the Guyana Girls Under19 team to participate in the Cricket West Indies Girls Under-19 Regional Tournament. The tournament will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from July 3-14, 2022.National Women's senior team player, Ashmini Munisar has been appointed captain of the team while Niveena Ramnauth will be her deputy. Munisar, who played in the just concluded CG Insurance and CWI Blaze T20 tournament, is expected to play a major role with both with bat and ball as Guyana aim to take this year's trophy.

The team includes Realanna Grimmond, who was the leading run scorer in the Under19 Inter-county played in May with an aggregated of 120 runs. Grimmond struck and unbeaten 91 against Demerara in what was considered the 'final' of the T20 tournament.

Head coach of Women's cricket, Julian Moore, will serve as the coach, while West Indies pacer Tremayne Smartt, who was a member of the National Senior Women's Team that participated in the recently concluded Women's Regional tournament, will be the Manager.

The squad is expected to be encamped from yesterday, Tuesday, June 28- July 1, with sessions to be held at the Guyana National Stadium from June 29-July 1, 2022.

CWI confirms West Indies contracted players for 2022-2023 ST JOHN'S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the international retainer contracts for the West Indies Men's and Women's players for the 2022-2023 season. A total of 36 players have been offered contracts for the period – which runs from 1, July 2022 to 30, June 2023.

This is in addition to 90 players across the region who are contracted to Territorial Board Franchise Squads.

The West Indies Men's contracted player list sees fast bowler Jayden Seales, left-arm seamer Obed McCoy and allrounder Odean Smith awarded international retainer contracts for the first time.

The West Indies Women's contracted player list sees allrounders Mandy Mangru and Jannillea Glasgow along with batter Rashada Williams awarded international retainer contracts for the first time, all of which are development contracts.

For 2022-23, CWI has changed the Men's retainer contract structure to offer player contracts across all formats of cricket, compared

to specific red or white-ball contracts in previous years.

T h e o ff e r o f r e t a i n e r contracts to all players follows an Evaluation Period of performances from 1, April 2021 to 31, March 2022, which is also supported by statistics from the previous 2019 - 2020 Evaluation Period. This allows for all players to be appraised immediately after the Evaluation Period and provides a notice period before new contracts start on 1, July 2022. The system is

designed to reward hard work and performance results.

New Amsterdam/Canje teams benefit from cricket balls, Munisar receives a $100,000 educational grant

total of seventeen cricket clubs in the New Amsterdam/ Canje sub area on Friday last benefitted from a donation of a box of red balls under the Berbice Cricket Board/ Shimron and Nirvani Hetmyer Cricket Development Trust Fund. The presentation was done at the St. Francis Community Developers in the presence of legendary West Indies cricketer Courtney Walsh and current batting star Shimron Hetmyer.

BCB President Hilbert Foster disclosed that the Hetmyers in 2022 are investing $1.5 million into the second edition of their cricket trust fund, with a total of $1 million being used to assist close to ninety cricket clubs with a box of red balls.

The balls would be used by the respective clubs to either organise practice sessions with their members or to participate in second division tournaments organised by

Hetmyer hands over an educational grant to Ashmini Munisar. the pro active board. Among clubs receiving balls were Edinburgh,

Mount Sinai, Tucber Park, Pathfinders, Goed Bananen, Young Warriors, Guymine, Kendall's Union Sports Star and Kendall's Union Cricket Club.

Foster stated that to date, the Berbice Cricket Board has already handed over balls to twenty- eight clubs in the Upper Corentyne area and another fourteen in the West Berbice Sub Association. Another twenty from the Lower Corentyne area would shortly receive their's under the fund. The BCB President stated that the remaining $500,000 would be invested into the board's pro-education programme and a female cricket tournament among

three teams later in the year.

The West Indies player last year launched the trust fund with an initial $1 million and this year increased it by $500,000 as they were very impressed by the way it was organised. Mrs. Nirvani Hetmyer has made it quite clear that the couple, who recently became parents, have full confidence in BCB President Hilbert Foster. She stated that they would continue to finance the trust fund as long as Foster remains at the helm of the Board.

The BCB also handed over a cheque for one hundred thousand dollars to National female player

Ashmini Munisar as part of the fund. The donation would assist the national under19 captain to successfully complete her studies at the Guyana School of Agriculture. The BCB over the last four years has assisted hundreds of youth cricketers with educational grants and even has a University of Guyana scholarship programme.

Foster urged Munisar, who made her senior debut this year, to focus on her educational and cricketing c a r e e r. M u n i s a r e x p r e s s e d gratitude to Foster, the Hetmyers and BCB for investing in her studies and she committed herself to making them all proud.

Fruta Conquerors, GDF record stunning victories When action in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Women Development League (WDL) continued on Saturday last at the GFF National Training Centre, Providence, EBD, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in their first match eased to a 4-0 win over Santos Football Club (SFC) whist Fruta Conquerors rebounded in grand style following their opening loss to Police Football Club (PFC) when they hammered Swan Football Club ((SFC), 19-0.

GDF were kept in check by their less experienced counterparts from Santos and were only able to penetrate the Santos final third once in the first half, thanks to an Aboice Heywood 26th minute strike.

The bigger name teams including GDF and the GPF would have snapped up most of the seasoned female players during the transfer window thus far which has made way for a number of young players to be able to showcase their talent at this, highest level for w o m e n i n G u y a n a .

While it might bring with it some heavy losses, these young players would be very thankful for the exposure as they would become tougher players by the end of this shortened season.

The second half for the GDF was more satisfying as they fired in three unanswered goals. Anastasia Horsham in the 63rd, Suashar Greaves, two minutes later, and Sherrilyn Kingston in the 74th, were the other players on the score sheet for the Army, which is third place on the points table with three points, the same as Police and Fruta Conquerors at the top, goal difference separating them.

Walsh was accompanied by West Indies female team physiotherapist Neil Barry Jnr and West Indies player Shimron Hetmyer. Walsh was

involved in an informative segment with Foster, who asked numerous questions on the importance of education, physical fitness, importance of discipline, his legendary career, how to deal with the media and the role of a sport ambassador among others.

Walsh's advised the attentive audience to work on all aspects of their game on a daily basis for about three hours and to use disappointments as an incentive to better themselves.

Warning that a cricketing career is just for a short period, he urged players to make sure that they pursue their educational career with a passion.

This he stated would assist them to have a life after the end of their cricketing career.

GCB Rising Stars batted first and were put on the back foot early when pacer Bruce Vincent bowled opener Anthony Khan (00) and Rampersaud Ramnauth (05) was run out as they were reduced to 17-2. West Indies squads named for T20Is and CG United ODIs vs Bangladesh Rovman Powell the new T20I Vice Captain ST JOHN'S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies' (CWI) Selection Panel yesterday announced the West Indies Men's squad for the upcoming three-match T20 International Series and the three-match CG United OneDay International Series against Bangladesh.

Rovman Powell has been announced as the new Vice Captain for the T20Is while left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy returns after recovering from injuries.

There are also recalls for experienced wicket-keeper batter Devon Thomas and allrounder Keemo Paul. In the CG United ODI Series squad, there is a call up for left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie.

Lead Selectors the Most Honorable Dr Desmond Hayne said: “We know Rovman's history. He has captained the West Indies before and is also the captain of his CPL franchise. Our role is to look at future leaders as well and we have identified a few, including himself, who we will be putting programmes around to ensure we keep them involved in that aspect of the cricket.”

“Thomas is a very versatile cricketer, who has been knocking on the door in all formats. He has been doing well in franchise cricket and with that level of talent, we must ensure we

keep him interested. He brings a lot to the table and is basically a four-dimensional player, he can bat, bowl, he is brilliant in the field, and he can keep wicket as well.

McCoy has done exceptionally well in the IPL and enjoyed a successful stint in England as well, so we are confident that he is back to his best in terms of playing and fitness,” Haynes added.

“Generally, we have to start looking at the bigger picture of getting these players playing together as often as possible in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup later down in the year. We need to ensure we are fielding a very strong side for that tournament.”

The T20I Series opens with back-to-back matches on Saturday, 2 July and Sunday, 3 July at the Windsor Park in Dominica. This will see a return to international cricket at the fully refurbished venue, where international cricket is being hosted for the first time since the hurricane damage of 2017.

ESCL, teammates express condolences to Seepersaud family Essequibo Softball Cricket League (ESCL) has sent out condolences to the family and friends of Alvin Seepersaud who died recently at the age of 53 due to a Heart-Attack in New York.

Seepersaud represented the USA-based Braves Cricket Club during his softball cricketing career and he was always touted an excellent cricketer.

He was known for his continued support as well and since the formation of the ESCL two years ago, he showed his generosity, too.

Chairman of the ESCL Wakeel Layne stated that he and his fellow executive members are saddened after learning of Seepersaud's sudden demise.

In a simple ceremony inside a packed school auditorium, the officials did apologize to the team for being unable to present their medals at the conclusion of the tournament, which was due to a mix up, but thanked them for their patience.

Harmony Tan, the 115th ranked player in the world, defeated the tennis legend 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(7) in a match that lasted over three hours.

It was a fiercely competitive match from start to finish, with neither player ever letting up or letting go.

And there were signs of the Serena we all know. Her overhand smash was fiery.

Her serve was strong and lively. She was full of passion and intensity. But at the start, it wasn't quite the same. She was indecisive, leading to a lot of missed shots and unforced errors.

She was also too eager at times, hitting balls that sailed wide and long. She had a 4-2 lead in the first set, but let it slip away as Tan won the next five games.

In the second game of the second set, Williams faced 12 deuces, continually giving Tan the advantage before taking it back, unable to string two points together.

It was a tug of war that lasted 19 minutes and 43 seconds, but she came out on top to break Tan's serve.

What Williams needed next was an easy hold, and while it wasn't easy, she did get it to go up 2-0. She then won the next three games before Tan could even get herself on the board.

Williams ended up taking the second set to force a deciding third.

And just like the first set, Williams had a 3-1 lead and gave it all up, then allowed Tan to take a 4-3 lead. She came back to tie it, but 4-4 is a precarious place to be. She rightly celebrated after taking a close game to go

ahead 5-4, but she gave that lead back too. Tan eventually took a 6-5 lead, and Williams was on the ropes. She came within one point of defeat before she pulled it back to force a tiebreak.

Williams took a 4-0 lead, having scored seven points in a row after facing match point. Then Tan came back after Williams made a few miscalculations, tying it at 44. Tan, who had been a spectacular competitor, just wouldn't go away, refusing to bend to an actual sports legend. She took a 5-4 lead, but the crowd urged Williams on, willing her to dig deep. But Williams was quickly back in the danger zone, down 9-7 and facing match point. This time, she couldn't pull it back.

You could attribute this loss to her age, or to the fact that she's played a grand total of two matches in the past year before Tuesday. It's hard to know which one is more at fault than the other. Without seeing her play again, which would likely happen at the US Open in late August, we won't know. But one thing is

true: Williams played well e n o u g h t o w i n .

Unfortunately, yesterday, it just wasn't enough.

It's hard to imagine a world in which the great Serena Williams ends her career after a disappointing first-round loss at one of her favorite tournaments. She will hopefully give herself more time to play, because the more she plays, the more decisive she'll be. Williams might not be able to turn back time, but that is one concrete thing she can definitely improve to give herself a greater advantage whenever we see her next — which we hopefully will at Flushing Meadows later this summer.

Williams has only lost in the first round of a Grand Slam twice before yesterday, and had done it just once before at Wimbledon in 2021 (though that was due to injury).

This is not the type of career history that Williams wanted to make, but it doesn't have to be her final or defining moment.

But in the end, that's up to her.

Soesdyke Falcons and Grove Hi-Tech snatch full points in exciting encounters

oesdyke Falcons sent out a stern warning to all and sundry in the ongoing East Bank Football Association Senior Men's League when they upstaged long-time rivals Timehri Panthers 3-2 in a thrilling clash on Sunday last at the GFF National Training Centre.

It was a long-awaited and highly anticipated clash between two rivals with a well-documented history in football. Timehri would have had the better of their Soesdyke neighbours for some time but that was not the case on Sunday as the winners were urged on by their large band of supporters on a day when even the rain couldn't stop the fans from cheering them on.

Many opted to stay in the rain with and without umbrellas as the action on the pitch was hot enough to keep them glued to the end-to-end action.

Soesdyke it was which took the early lead when forward, Tyrone Khan, eased into the final third from the

right side to slot the ball into the back of the nets.

This brought a synchronized eruption of cheers and joy from the Soesdyke fans, and it was game on. The exchanges continued to ebb and flow with neither team being able to wrest total advantage.

Timehri, however, did have a few promising runs but were unable to make them count.

With the halftime whistle being anticipated, it was the Timehri lads who were on another enterprising run into the Soesdyke final third, even though they were unable to finish as they would have liked, they were able to draw a penalty for a foul.

Stepping up to take the kick from the penalty mark was Lloyd Matthews who made no mistake on the stroke of halftime.

The second half commenced with the same zest and energy from both teams and a mere six minutes into the half, veteran midfielder, Mervin Joseph restored Soesdyke's

advantage when he found the back of the nets.

It was Joseph again on target in the 68th minute to double the advantage for Soesdyke with the score reading 3-1. Lots of time remained and Timehri, the reigning League champions never gave up.

They turned the heat up and again, chances were created but Soesdyke held their nerves as best they could under relentless pressure.

Three minutes to fulltime, second-half substitute, J. Walcott handed Timehri a sniffer of a chance when he scored, but time was against them as the final whistle was sounded minutes later.

The fans on both sides of the divide enjoyed a memorable clash on a wet Sunday afternoon.

Sunday's main supporting clash had set the tone for the feature event when Grove Hi-Tech had to pull out all the stops to snatch full points from a determined and improving Herstelling (Continued on page 27)

Daesrath appeared at number four with his team in a spot of bother at 27-2 with the departure of skipper and Canada-based Avinash Sookdeo (00) and Avish Rukhram (11). But he and the inform Amit Rukhram participated in a steady 38run third-wicket stand before Avish was taken for

31 laced with four sixes.

Daesrath met his demise in the penultimate over with Brampton Gladiators needing eight from the final over bowled by the experienced Polly Shivrathan whose full-toss was dully dispatched by Lindon Persaud to spark wild celebrations in the Gladiators' camp.Daesrath, the Berbician, was inevitably named the Most Valuable Player as Nishal Singh grabbed three wickets for 29 runs from his two overs but his effort was in vain.
