Mrs. Ali had committed to rebuilding the home after learning that the family was living in deplorable conditions after the father, the sole breadwinner, was diagnosed with cancer and became bedridden for the past three years. As a result, Dolly Ward, 53, was unable to work because she had to prioritise attending to the needs of her husband and children The family reportedly depended on the father’s pension along with their small poultry business toprovidefortheirneeds.

HIGH COST OF LIVINGANYBODY IN GOVT. CARES?

Ashort history from memory by Hamilton Green for Donald Ramotar

DEAREDITOR,

Ilearntofaletterwritten byFormerPresidentDonald Ramotar, a person I enjoy a cordialrelationshipwithand regardasafriend.

I was somewhat disappointed at the vitriolic language impugning my character and the attempt to suggest my knowledge and calling into question the accuracy of my recollection of previous events and asseverating among other thingsthatIamonamission t o , i n h i s w o r d s , ‘misrepresent, distort, falsify and deliberately mislead.’ The matter referred to I can attest to from personal knowledge andnotasitappearstobethe case of my friend Donald from writings and documents of doubtful authenticity

First, is the use in our political environment of the word “ApanJaat,” a Hindu phrase saying vote for your ownrace.InotedthePPPdid not coin this phrase but clearly did little to subdue it as it consumed and divided our Country and to suggest furtherthatBurnhamandthe PNCusedApanJaatfortheir own purposes is absolutely ridiculous and an unfortunatedistortionofthat

period I lived through. Let me set the records straight,I publicly said that from the best of my knowledge, neither Burnham nor Jagan were racist, but clearly others in the Party sought to use others with different ideasandtodaythisdemonis stillwithus.

I grew up in the south of the city, where my father owned the first drugstore in Albouystown and he also started the People’s Benefit Scheme, thefirstIndigenous Bank in the City He was therefore a very popular figure I recall Daniel Prahabudas Debidin invited him to chair a meeting at St. Thomas’ School in Ketley Street; opposite where my godmother and her husband (half white, half Indian) lived. He took me with him tothemeeting, attendedbya large number of IndoGuyanese and Afro

Guyanese During the Meeting, Debidin and another man addressed the gathering in Hindi My father took me by the hand, as he walked out of the meeting. Later, a Mr Singh o f S c h o o l S t r e e t , Albouystown told my father that it was there “ApanJaat” gained currency Fast track tothe1953Elections,where

as a teenager I helped the United PPP win the Electionsof1953.

AfterthePPPsplit, along with my parents, we came out on the side with Burnham. At that split, two prominent Indo-Guyanese supported Burnham; Medical Doctor, JP

Latchmansingh and Lawyer

Jai Narine Singh My understandingisthatthisset off alarm bells within the ranks of certain PPP topbrass because of the demographicsofthecountry, ApanJaat was allowed to flourish and the rest is history Ramotar’s obsession, like others, to blame Burnham for everything that went wrong inGuyanaiswellknown. His statement that Burnham and the PNC used ApanJaat to scare black people as a reverse racism is absurd and ludicrous. The next issue was Guyana’s cold shoulder to the West Indies Federation.Therealconcern ofcertainpoliticalfiguresin Trinidad and Guyana was that these were the only two territorieswhichhadseveral Indian groupings and hence their concern that the Federation of Antigua, St. Kitts, Barbados, Jamaica, etc. would mean a

Nakema Deonauth was an exceptional person who would be greatly missed

DEAREDITOR,

The loss of Nakema YoungDeonauthakaDimitri and Damendra, has been devastating and very hard to come to terms with especially given the circumstances surrounding hisunnaturaldeath.

Therewassomuchmore to him than what has been statedinthemedia.

He was a Systems DevelopmentCoordinatorat the Ministry of Education where he played an integral role in several crucial projects and he had an impressive academic record too. He graduated from the UniversityofGuyanawitha degree in Computer Science and later went to India on a GoG scholarship where he successful completed his Master’s Degree in Computer Science. Still with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and passion forthesubjecthemostloved Nakema won a scholarship toundertakehisPhDstudies

in China. While there, he taught university students which he found utterly fulfilling. He often told me how he missed teaching and the interactions with his students.

Apart from his academic a n d p r o f e s s i o n a l accomplishments, Nakema was a really humble, compassionate, dedicated andcaringindividual.

He was a true animal loverandlifelongvegetarian not due to religious beliefs butphilosophicalstanceand the firm conviction that all animals are sacred and should not be killed or consumed. I’ve never met anyone like him; several timesheevenberatedmefor killing a few insects that bit orbotheredme.

Ifabuggotintohisplace from the balcony, he would pick it up and place it outside.Helovedpeopletoo; didn’tholdagrudgeandwas quick to forgive and forget. Heonlysawgoodintentions

in others often to his detriment and even when he was not treated fairly, he wouldn’t engage in confrontations.

Although not an extrovert but a simple and quiet man who enjoyed listeningtopodcasts, playing video games and immersing himself in the world of technology in his free time, he was thoughtful and romantic Dudu (my nickname for him) touched the lives of all who knew him; he was like an immoveable, ever-present rock that one could rely upon.Althoughhehadafulltime job, he still assisted his parentseverydayafterwork and on weekends with their business.

The death of Nakema Deonauth who held dual citizenship (American and Guyanese) is untimely, tragic and horrific For someonewhoseidentitywas so cemented to the preservation of life and the

strong stance against violence it is extremely heartbreaking that death came for him cloaked in cruelty, horror and anguish in his own home. I weep for himandamdevastatedatthis unimaginable loss Even though Nakema and I had very different personalities andphilosophicalideologies we had mutual respect and love.

Editor, hopefully all avenues would be explored and resources utilised especially in the forensic aspect of the investigation into the death of Nakema Deonauth so that the human monster (s) responsible for his untimely and horrific death face the full force of thelawandthosewholoved and cared for him can have closure especially his biological mom (Reba Young in Washington DC), parents in Guyana and other familymembersandfriends.

DEAREDITOR,

June 13 marked yet anotherdeathanniversaryof Dr Walter Rodney I am somewhatdisappointedthat, except for a mention by NigelWestmass(Facebook), there was nothing in the public space to honor the memory of this true son of Guyana – indeed a national hero. Those of us who were contemporaries of Walter should not forget; the youngershouldbeaware.Of course, there is always anothersideofthestory But letthereadermakeinformed judgement. In June 2013 I wrote the following in the MemoryofWalterRodney

The Memory of Walter Rodney THE E-ID CARD PROJECT IS LACED WITH INCONSISTENCIES

I stood at the corner of Barr and Alexander Streets, Kitty, listening to Dr.Walter Rodney and others speak. I was at the Bourda Market Mall, Georgetown, among the massive crowd taking in the logics of Rodney when hisresonantvoicewouldfill the air I stood on the sidewalkinTigerBayeasing a passage as the WPA meeting was halted with the arrival of the Rabbi Washington’s goons from the House of Israel in government vehicles, armed with lengths of sugar cane, sticks, andguns.Iran, scared for my life, into a yard in Charlotte Street, unable to scale the high, corrugated zinc fence We (Zinul Bacchus, Rahim Bacchus andI)felttrapped.

We were spared that day because the attackers fled past. But Father Darke was not so lucky that fearful day when he was stabbed to death I was present at probably all the meetings, protests and marches in Georgetown and environs.

So these flashbacks came rushing to me as the motion in parliament to set up a Commission of Inquiry into his death was being debated onWednesday,June292005 – when the WPAwas siding with the PNCR for an amendment to substitute the key word “assassinated” with“killed”. Those were times when fear stalked the land, when dictatorship was being legitimized by the PNC doctrine of “party paramountcy”. We should also recall repeated rigging of elections by the PNC. Manylivesweresnuffedout untimely, which can only be described as political murders Remember the “ballot box Martyrs”, the Arnold Rampersaud jailing, the killing of Shirley FieldRidley, Vincent Teekah, Edward Dublin, Othene Koama, theshootingofJosh Ramsammy, and numerous h a r a s s m e n t a n d

incarcerations The

maximum maniacal

comradeleaderBurnhamdid not mince words when he declared: “Our steel is sharper.” But there was a bright ray of hope… when the taste of freedom and democracy was becoming almostpalpable. This, inmy view, wasbecomingareality because of the presence of Walter Rodney – his brilliance, his ability to analyze, hisquietbutriveted demeanor, hissimplicityand humility, charisma and eloquence.Hispresencewas

a breath of fresh air He was Guyana’s messiah The masses understood his language of politics in the WPA booklet “Peoples’ PowerNoDictator”.

Theory was gripping the masses, becomingamaterial force. When he referred to “king kong” the people understood. When he spoke of the “Midas touch” the people understood A nationwide political c o n v e r s a t i o n w a s developing rapidly among all the people, for he did not appeal to race or color, or religion.

Walter Rodney was consequentlymurdered, yes, assassinatedonJune131980 because he was seen as a seriousthreat.Hedidnotdie by “misadventure” as concluded by Desmond Hoyte. That is why Hoyte’s Inquirydidnotholdground; hence the new Commission of Inquiry into his death, which Walter’s widow, Dr PatriciaRodney, pointedout is “essential for the truth to emerge, is consistent with democratic principles, and will be an instrument of reconciliation” and which will “bring closure, not only for our family, but for the Guyanese people.” ‘Truth and Reconciliation’ is essentialforclosure, andfor people and a nation to move on. The PNC government failed the Guyanese people duringtheirtermsinoffice.

Apart from the political harassment, human rights infractions and denial of

democracy, thePNCreduced Guyana to be among the poorestnationsintheworld, second to Haiti of the West. The PNC has never made a statementoftheTruth;ithas not apologized to the Guyanesepeople.

The party is still in denial How then is it p o s s i b l e t o h a v e Reconciliation without Truth!The process will be a charade,meaningless,unless the PNC is prepared to engageincatharsis.

It is thus baffling to figure out the grotesque and wickeddallianceoftheWPA with the PNC. Dr Rupert Roopnaraine shared the same platform with Walter Rodney, and he was as fearless as Walter when he spoke. After so many years, whathaschanged?Sadlythe WPAofWalterRodneyisno more Many so-called ‘advocates’ have become Afro-centric and Indocentric racists; some are opportunistic;andonlyafew good ones have remained faithfultothespiritofWalter Rodney ThetrueRodneyites mustnotallowthatdimming flicker to be blown out by sinisterforces.Letusalways honor the true heroes of Guyana.

So here is another potential casualty brewing, exposing the propensity of the de facto President and honcho for ill-conceived projects like the white elephant Skeldon sugar factory, the ill-advised and

mis-guided Amalia Falls, andthesillyandunthinkable SurendraHospital. Such a huge expenditure could be better used to improve the poor conditions

at all the hospitals throughout the country, repair the wide and deep potholes on the roadways including the so-called poorly constructed highways, andthecollection ofgarbageintherat-infested Capitalandothercitiesinthe

country where a few inches of rain would cause severe flooding.

The time has come for thetaxpayersandthepeople in general to question how the PPPC government headed by the honcho and the de facto president is spending their dollars. For example, it has been ten years and counting since construction of the Cheddi JaganAirporthasstartedand today, it is still not

completed. Lousy work by the Chinese contractor who are friends of the de facto president is still being paid bythegovernmenttocorrect theirownmistakes.

In Guyana, the PPPC government is wasting billions of dollars to build roads, bridges, andastadium atPalmyrainBerbicewhich only a handful rich persons will use because of the high costoftransportation.

No one, except the

honcho and de facto president, knows how much thestadiumwillcostorhow the contractor was awarded the contract. Were there any kickbacks and if so, who it was paid to. So, while the government is investing heavily in hi-tech ID cards and infrastructure which are of little importance to the people,morethat60percent of the population are poor and are struggling to put food on the table or send

Other issues, such as CARIFESTA, require no debunking since the 70s shouldbewithinthememory bank of this generation of Guyanese. If we are to unite this country, we must put an end to old myths and propaganda, share with this generation the truth of our history, the enormous influence of the Cold War andhowasanationwewere caught, andwestillareinthe

We must remember that when President John F Kennedy had the famous RockingChairMeetingwith Dr Jagan,Dr Jaganfailedto give an outright reply then Kennedy asked him are you a Communist? We must not ignore the relationship between these issues in the all-consumingColdWar

Unless we put an end to this back-hand or should I say, this bacchanal of our history, we deny this generationanopportunityto profit from the mistakes of the past, disallowing them the opportunity to remove the blanket of darkness and more than that to recognize that even during slavery to nowthetricksoftheforeign and local Massa. It is that lackofunderstandingofour history and the need for authentic unity that has allowed Massa and the new

If National Service was allowedtoflourish, itwould have been effectively diminished if not destroyed existingfears, suspicionand distrust.

On the Berbice River Bridge, I stand by every word in my statement, that is, that the initial study showedthatthebestlocation would have been a point between Stanleytown and Rotterdam on the East to Ithacaonthewest.

The PPP, when they got into office, made a political decisionpost1992,tolocate the bridge further north, where the river was wider andthatisthereasonmydear Donald, whytheIDBdidnot provide the promised funds for the construction of the BerbiceBridge.

ThePPPGovernment,no matter what Jagdeo is now saying, could not offer a

satisfactory explanation for the decision and subsequent Engineer’s study to shift the Bridge from Palmyra on the East and D’Edward Village on the west, and with the seed-money taken from the NIS, weakening this initiative of the PNC and Burnham in the interest of workers.

This report should be in the Ministry of Works’ file, thatis, ifitwasnotdestroyed in the many bonfires of records, documents after 1992. The biggest of these bonfires was outside of NCN; courageously Ave Brewster who is alive was able to save a few tapes beforetheywereconsumed.

You see Dear Donald; I speak from personal knowledge and not the figment of the imagination o f c e r t a i n f o l k s Additionally, I was Minister of Works, Hydraulics and Supply when the idea of bridging the Berbice and Demerara Rivers was conceived and ordered by Forbes Burnham.I suppose sincewe’reinWestBerbice, someonecantelluswhythe billion dollar hospital announced recently could not be cited at Fort Wellington but will now be

Onthequestionofhisoft time repeated slogan of Indians being beaten etc., between 1992 and 2015, more Afro-Guyanese were beaten and murdered than any other group in this country and similarly 1960 and 1964. So let us stop this charade about one ethnic group being victims of communal strife in our country

Inoticedhehasignoreda pointIhadmadeearlier, that it is unfair to demand ethnic balance in one sector, and where he got this nancystory, that the test for recruitment in security forces differed, is beyond belief and certainly not during my public life of seven decades. On the security forces, the PPP had twenty-three yearstocorrectallthewrong doings but nowhere in the world can you in just a few generations change the proclivities and preferences of people.I close on a light note, as you noticed how, with few recent exceptions, Indian boys and girls shied away from playing steel pans, playing football and

track and field events and evensingingcalypsos.

Finally, I appeal to my friend Donald and others to emerge from this belief that their side consists of the saints and angels and the other side consists of the devil and demons Incidentally, this week marks the anniversary of Former Permanent Secretary, Arthur Abraham ofthefirethatkilledhimself and seven children in Hadfield Street Maybe Donald’sresearchcantellus who is responsible for this horrible fire/arson. TIME TO TAKE BACK THE PPPC!

It will take a sacrificial lamb for the PPP to be returned to the bosom of the working class – the place where the original umbilical cordofthePPPisburied, and to which the working class partyofCheddiJaganhasto return.

T h e P P P C w a s established as working class party Throughoutthetenure of Cheddi Jagan it was unapologetically a working class party At the party’s congress in 1966 held at Land of Canaan, Cheddi wentasfarassayingthatthe PPP should aim to be the country’sonlyworkingclass party.

Sincehisdeath, however, the bourgeois class has seized control of the PPP It isthisclassthatisexertingan overwhelming influence on theparty, throughitscontrol ofcertainleadersofthePPP

It will not be an easy task to liberate the PPP from the clutchesofthosewithmoney who believe that because they finance the party, they ownit.

Whoever decides to step forward and take a stand in favour of decoupling the party from the bourgeois class must be prepared to be vilified to the point of being demonized. Those persons will have to be prepared to suffer persecution and even expulsion, but that is the price which will have to be paid if the PPP is to be restored as a working class party Therecanbenoreturn to the PPPC’s working class roots without persons being

punished.

So who will step up to help retake the party on behalf of the working class? Whoispreparedtomakethe sacrifices needed to redeem the party and return it to its roots?

Do not look towards the old guard. They have been putouttopastureanddonot havethestrength, willorthe wherewithal to instigate change even though they havelittletolose.

The younger brigade of thepartyisnotideologically developed, atleastnotinthe working class ideology of the party. It also lacks the supportandpowertoremove thosewhohavehijackedthe party And make no mistake about it, the PPP has been hijacked by the bourgeois class and it will take some doing to uproot this class dominationfromtheparty

But there is hope. The party now has a new momentum following its successes at the local governmentelections. These successes, however, must notbeexaggerated.

ThePPPCstartedoutasa multiracial party But the subsequent split in the party also split the working class. A return to the party’s working class roots must therefore involve efforts to reunite the working class. havetoawaitamoredetailed analysis of the election results.Butfornowitcanbe safely said that a relatively fair number of AfricanGuyanese teamed up with the PPPC to contest and campaign for the 2023 local governmentelections.

Those vibrant AfricanGuyanese activists must not allow themselves to be left onthesidelinesnowthatthe electionsareover Theymust mobilize themselves at two levels: the first by coming together as a distinct and unique caucus, within the party; and secondly by organizing themselves into party groups within their neighborhoods and communities.

They must not allow themselves to be absorbed into the existing groups of the party This will dilute their influence within the PPPC They must see themselves as a powerful new force within the PPPC andretainthatidentity Inthe next few months, they must work to have a presence at thenextPPPCCongressand a place within the Central Committee and Executive Committeeoftheparty

The increased AfricanGuyaneseelementwithinthe party must also establish their own groups in the communities which they represent They should demand the right to do this and to have a say in the decision making of the party’s regional groupings. Theyshouldavoidbeingcoopted into existing party

T h e 2 0 2 3 l o c a l governmentelectionswasan eye opener The PNCR showed that big bucks are not needed to do well in elections. The PNCR ran a lackluster, low-keyed and low-budget campaign. But the results were telling. The PNCR held on to its strongholds in Linden, Georgetown and New Amsterdam and tied in MahdiaandBartica.

T h i s w i l l s e n d shockwaves through the ranks of the bourgeois class

which controls the PPPC because they will realize now that their money is no longer essential to the electoral fortunes of the PPPC.Butthisalonewillnot loosentheirgripontheparty

It will take bravery to restore the PPPC as a working class party, including leadership changes. And this why the campaign for change within the PPPC has to begin now and not wait until the bourgeois class executes its plans to control and manipulate the party’s

H@RD TRUTHS

JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS

It is still difficult to absorb, harder to believe. I observe US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his shocking dissent in theAlabamavotingcasethat allegedly discriminated

against Black voters by the redrawing of boundaries, and lumping them into a single district. As asserted, itisastartlingdissent, when even two conservative justices, one of whom was

Chief Justice John Roberts, voted against Alabama’s gerrymandering.

To think that the descendant of slaves and sharecroppers could turn so decisively against his own

people, when they are so strikingly discriminated against, victimizedyetagain by the power and class structure. A man as learned as Justice Thomas has to be intimately familiar with the post-Civil War and postReconstruction periods, when the Plessy decision effectively reduced African Americans to outcasts and second-class citizens; but yet he dissented as he did. He has to know about the Jim Crow era, and how legislation was used as a weapon to bludgeon Black Americans into a state of distressed nonexistence, no politicalpower;buthevoted as he did in Allen v Milligan. Hehastoknowof what the spirit of theVoting RightsActof1966intended, andtherangeofwhatwasto be resolved; yet he went against the majority, which included two of his judicial brethren possessing his ideologicalstreak.

In a case as sensitive as Allen v Milligan, with so much at stake, with what wasgainedthroughsomuch trial and sacrifice, and with what could signify a major retreatinBlackprogressand presenceinAmerica,Justice Thomas saw matters only through his now rock-hard ideological prism. I ask myselfwhetherthatgiantof American jurisprudence, Justice Thurgood Marshall, would have dissented as Justice Clarence Thomas did. Never! I recall with some distaste what the late archconservative Supreme CourtJusticeAntoninScalia had to say when asked to compare his judicial philosophy to that of

Clarence Thomas.

Scalia’sresponseis scorching: “I’m an originalist, but I’m not a nut ” As dismissals go, there wasnonesharper, and what makes it more contemptuousisthatJustice Thomas is of the same conservative bent held by Scalia.

Taking where Justice Thomasstands, whathehas projected, despite being a beneficiary of the once helpful things he now fiercely condemns, I begin to get a clearer, and greater, understanding of how abandonment of one’s own under inexplicable reasonings, throughshallow constructs, can assume ascendancy in the lives and practices of those who shouldknowbetter Whatis inarguable is that the company of enslavers and those who historically exploited are much preferred over that of one’s own, and their justifiable interests. It is that old saying coming to life: the converted has to prove himself as being purer and stronger every day, with little room for deviation, abstention, orconsideration.

I examine the judicial record of Justice Thomas, particularly as it relates to affirmative action, and all thatisencounteredisaman, a jurist, who is boiling mad atitsexistence. Thisiswhat emerges from a man who owes his education, and all the powerful relationships that came about through it, as well as the sponsorships of political godfathers. I detect a debt of gratitude being paid and repaid over and again. Or, to present differently, their passions andtheirvisionsareadopted byhim, becomeinseparable fromhim.Icontendthatthis is what we are seeing, experiencing, andstruggling to come to grips with in Guyana. Thatis, whereone politicalleaderafteranother

inthisrichcountryrushesto stand in cherishing embrace of the priorities that are the most pleasing to those who once held the whip hand. Theystilldo, butundernew guises. The planks in place and the practices in operation that are most profitable are what must remain as they are. In the grand manner of Justice Clarence Thomas, a man of distinctive color, there are Guyanese men and women of the same distinguishing coloration (in its broadened sense), that sets them apart from the yearnings and dreamsoftheirown. There are those Guyanese-leaders, ministers, religious worshippers, private sector operators, and civil society schemers-whohavemadeit their mission and mantra to tell the stories, fight the battles, and pauperize their own peoples, on behalf of alien self-enrichers and plunderers. They do these things, so that their a s s o c i a t i o n s a n d collaborations with the remorselesspillagerswillbe well recognized and well rewarded They have, haven’tthey?

Lookatwhatwehavein Guyana today from our cleverpoliticalpractitioners and their bands of similarly sickbrothers.

There is sifting and parsing, and straining and sanitizing, so that certain narratives, ongoing practices continue untouched and unabated Clarence Thomas fervently desires for affirmative action to go and the death penalty to stay The brown and black and paler Guyanese ClarenceThomas (es) want recent history to remain as it is; and what holdstheprospectsofgiving lowlyGuyaneseafootinthe door to be banishedforever Somebody is aiding and abetting, and it is not I. Someareselling, andIhave nothing to sell, none to please.

Greece boat disaster: Up to 500 people still missing says UN

BBC - Up to 500 people are still missing from a migrant boat that sank off Greece, the UN human rights office says.

Large numbers of women and children were among those missing in the “horrific tragedy” that left 78 people dead, said spokesman Jeremy Laurence.

The appalling loss of life underscored the need to bring people smugglers to justice, he added.

But it also made clear that search and rescue at sea was a “legal and humanitarian imperative”.

IN DEFAULT of your filing an Acknowledgement of Service/Notice of Intention to Defend, Answer and/or Cross Petition the Court may proceed in your absence and may make any Order it considers appropriate, including granting the Divorce.

The Registry of the Family Division of the High Court is located at the Law Courts [Georgetown, Demerara]. The office is open to the public between 8:00am and 3:30pm Mondays to Thursdays and 8:00am to 2:30pm on Fridays except on public holidays and on such other days as the Registry is closed. Dated the 19th day of May, 2023.

In a joint statement with the International Organization for Migration, the refugee agency said any search and rescue action had to be conducted to prevent loss of life..

Since the fishing boat carrying up to 750 people went down 50 nautical miles of Pylos in southern Greece, the role of the coastguard has come under increasing scrutiny.

Greece’s caretaker prime minister, Ioannis Sarmas, said a “thorough investigation of the real facts and technical judgements” will take place to determine what had caused the boat to sink.

Greek officials have denied a series of reports that suggest it went down after 02:00 on Wednesday because a rope was attached by coastguards.

Two of the 104 survivors of the wreck have described how the highly crowded boat had veered from side to side.

Initially the coastguard said it had kept a “discreet distance” from the boat. But then Greek newspaper Kathimerini quoted a source saying members of the coastguard had tied a rope to the boat so its crew could check on conditions, and those on board had then untied it to continue heading for Italy. That incident is understood to have taken place at around 23:00, three hours before the boat went down.

Government spokesman Ilias Siakantaris confirmed on Friday that the coastguard had “used a rope to steady themselves, to approach, to see if they wanted any help”.

But he stressed: “There

was no mooring rope,” suggesting that there was no attempt to tow the boat or tether it for any length of time.

“They refused it, they said ‘no help, we go to Italy’ and continued on their way.”

The question of whether a rope had been tied to the migrant boat was first raised by a refugee activist who said people on board had told her they feared it could prompt their highly crowded boat to turn over. The coastguard emphasised that its patrol boat had for a few minutes “dropped a small rope on to the fishing vessel to find out the current condition of the boat and passengers”.

Some of those on board then untied it in order to continue their route northwards to Italy and the patrol “moved away to watch from a close distance”. But since the tragedy unfolded, its timeline and account have been challenged. The coastguard has stressed that from the first moment it was in contact with the crew no request for assistance was made and further repeated offers of help were turned down.

One organisation which provides support for migrants at sea, Alarm Phone, sent an email on Tuesday afternoon warning the coastguard and others that as many as 750 people were on board and that they were urgently asking for help.

Two accounts from survivors have suggested that tying a rope to the fishing boat may have led to it going

down.

One has come from a local councillor in the port city of Kalamata who had earlier spoken to a 24-year-old Syrian.

“The coastguard boat tied them with some rope and tried to tow them to the left. For an unknown reason the boat veered to the right and suddenly sank,” said Tasos Polychronopoulos.

Another survivor gave a similar version to former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras during a visit to Kalamata on Thursday.

“The Greek coastguard asked the vessel to follow them, but they couldn’t,” a translator told Mr Tsipras. “The coastguard then threw a rope but because they didn’t know how to pull the rope, the vessel started dangling right and left.”

“The coastguard boat was going too fast but the vessel

was already dangling to the left, and that’s how it sank.”

Nine people, including several Egyptians, have been arrested on suspicion of people trafficking, Greek TV is reporting.

Georgios Vasilakos, a volunteer rescue doctor for the Hellenic Red Cross, told the BBC that no women and children were among the survivors.

He said survivors reported that “all women and children were isolated below deck”.

“This is why, bec ause of the rapid unfolding of events and the rapid capsizing of the boat, they were unable to get out in time,” he said.

People on the boat had been drinking sea water for at least two days before it sank, he said. Families of some of the missing have arrived in Kalamata in search of their loved ones.

“My relatives were on the boat,” said Aftab, who had travelled from the UK and said at least four of his relatives from Pakistan were unaccounted for.

A Syrian man from the Netherlands broke down as he revealed his wife and brother-in-law were missing.

“The authorities are looking for their bodies in the sea... They’re looking in hospitals, they’re looking among dead bodies, and among the survivors,” Kassam Abozeed said. Greece is one of the main routes into the European Union for refugees and migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Last month the Greek government came under international criticism over video reportedly showed the forceful expulsion of migrants who were set adrift at sea.

Local activists are among those who have fled the violence while international aid organizations such as

“There are gang leaders who are also political operatives, who control important communities,” said Gonsalves, warning that “you have to be careful you don’t set about to engage with gangs in Haiti and provide some legitimacy to them.”

Gonsalves said people with ties to gangs were likely present at talks between representatives of

Haiti’s civil society and government in Jamaica this week, at which Prime Minister Ariel Henry pledged to broaden the country’s transition council to make the government more inclusive.

Henry has since October called for an international force to help police restore security and establish conditions for long-awaited elections, but no country has offered to lead such a force.

Meanwhile, Gonsalves said, Haitian migration is threatening security in neighboring Caribbean countries.

Gonsalves said his coun-

This would involve serious talks about reparations from France, Gonsalves said.

Haiti spent over a century paying France a costly “debt” as plantation owners demanded payment for property - including slaves - lost in the Haitian Revolution, often described as the world’s first and only successful slave rebellion.

Report alleges ‘coup’ documents found on Bolsonaro aide’s phone

Bolsonaro aide Mauro Cid is accused of h a v i n g ‘ g a t h e r e d documents’tosupportacoup against Brazil’s President Lula.

Aljazeera - Brazil’s FederalPolicehavereleased a report detailing evidence that an aide to former PresidentJairBolsonarowas involved in a plan to stage a military coup, following the far-right leader’s defeat in the2022elections.

Released on Friday, the report alleges that the aide, Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, “gathered documents with the objective of obtaining ‘legal and juridical’ support for the executionofacoupd’état”.

Those documents were recovered from Cid’s cellphone, according to the report, and they outlined potentialstepstopreventthe transfer of power to Bolsonaro’s successor, currentPresidentLuizInacio LuladaSilva.

Bolsonaro’s narrow defeat had proven divisive, fuelling far-right protests andthreatsofviolenceinthe weeks leading up to Lula’s inauguration. A week after Lula was sworn into office, Bolsonaro supporters converged on the Three

In the month after

Bolsonaro’s loss, his farrightcoalitionsoughttohave electronic voting machine ballots “invalidated”, alleging “malfunctions” that ultimately were never proven.

The head of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Alexandre de Moraes, ultimately threw out the coalition’s challenge, describingtheeffortasbeing in “bad faith”. The coalition was also fined $4.3m for a “total absence of any evidence”.

Nevertheless, groups on the far right have continued to reject the election results,

which marked Lula’s third successful presidential run, following victories in 2002 and2006.

The left-wing Lula has openlyaccusedBolsonaroof participating in coup attempts, sayinginFebruary: “I am certain that Bolsonaro actively participated in that

and is still trying to participate.”

But Bolsonaro and his lawyershavemaintainedthe former president’s innocence Bolsonaro currently faces several investigations, including i n t o h i s p o s s i b l e “instigation”oftheJanuary8 attack.

Friday’s report echoes similar allegations about Anderson Torres, who formerly served as Bolsonaro’sjusticeminister

A police raid on Torres’s home in January revealed a draft decree that proposed steps for the “correction” of October’s election results, according to current Justice MinisterFlavioDino.

According to the documents, an “intervener” would be named in the
