Guyana had many Trayvon Martins

DEAR EDITOR, Please permit my invaluable comment on the recent ‘declaration of war’ on criminals by our Honorable Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee. I want to point out that I have had quite a nightmare trying to decipher the messages of this particular Minister, especially as of late, which are strikingly close to what is obtained from the politburo and the presidium. I think it is reasonable to believe that this Minister has effectively declared war on nearly all Guyanese, contrary to his mirage belief that “it is the criminals that are a very small percentage to our society who create havoc and terror “ Well, pretty much, everyone is a “criminal” these days (at least that is what you

are referred to when in police custody) even as a littering offender. Seriously though, if this Minister wants to talk about people being criminals, he needs to get his facts straight. I want to believe that the Home Affairs Minister somehow sees the growing population of the poorer class as a mere “small percentage”. Run a survey and you might be surprised. However, don’t arrive at your statistical figure just yet; add that to the intended target which is no doubt anyone that fits the racial profile of a “small percentage”. Make no mistake, I must hasten to say that in this war, I stand on neutral ground although my argument might appear tipped to the side of the “criminals”. Since 1913-2013, the count of “fallen heroes” remains at sixty. Isn’t that a staggering figure? But let’s

What a joke for an Editorial DEAR EDITOR, As I wait on Thursday July 18, 2013 for the boss, I took a quick glance at the Guyana Chronicle. The Editorial of the Chronicle blast, “Great strides in Guyana’s health care”. So I ask, why my boss, who is a Government Official, none of the Ministers, Dr. Roger Luncheon, none of the Permanent Secretaries, Mr. Winston Brassington or even the PPP Boss in charge of the Health Care Project, Mr. Keith Burrowes, do not use the State Health Care system? They all go overseas or use the private health care system in Guyana. What a joke for an editorial. Christopher Samuels

Youth Ministry... From page 4 has angered many young people and has led to two youth protesting in 2011 to highlight the issue during the observance of UN designated “International Year of Youth 2010-2011”. The two youngsters were invited by Mr. Alfred King who promised that under the UNDP-EPTSI project, this would have been fulfilled. The UNDP-EPTSI project ended two years ago and the National Youth Policy is still an unfulfilled promise by the PPP government to young people. The Commonwealth Youth Programme has recently pledged to make the policy a reality, but this is yet to be seen. Mark Ross

take a look at the figure coming out of the criminals’ camp. It was recently disclosed by the Opposition Leader that over two hundred civilians lost their lives during an armed struggle in the CiviloPolice war between 2003-2013. Every day the toll is rising for the latter because the police have now gotten the better of the criminals by what is viewed by many as, unconstitutional tactics. But who cares, they are” criminals” anyway! It is against this backdrop that I’m calling on all right minded persons to raise their voices in unison and condemn this callous disparity; whether independent media, long s t a n d i n g c ivil rights personality or even friends of the perpetrators. We need to end this bloodshed. It is time Guyana wakes up from its slumbering and sees that it is its children’s blood that is running. How can anyone rationalize a law enforcer turning his gun on an unarmed seventeen year old and be acquitted of the charges later? Though this is the Trayvon Martin murder I’m referring to don’t forget over the past year or so Guyana would have had more than three Trayvon Martins. Linden alone had three. I want Mr. Rohee to understand that based on a well known fact that a majority of Guyanese has suffered tremendously as a result of government crackdown. Have you ever wondered just how many sons and daughters of this blessed land were either refused jobs or fired unjustifiably; and how often this scenario occurs? These are some important facts that Mr. Rohee need not neglect before he makes such brainless utterances. If this is not indeed bizarre then “our society” is. Paul Akeem Marshall

Letters... Where your views make the news

A major Flip-Flop! DEAR EDITOR, As concerned Guyanese, we want to inform the public that almost 18 months after assuming office, it is with the gravest of disappointment to observe that His Excellency President Donald Ramotar has done very little with respect to the creation of jobs for the youths in Guyana, end or reduce corruption, reduce crime and illegal drug trafficking or establish the Public Procurement Commission which is urgently needed for transparency and accountability. This is in light of the fact that as the General Secretary of the PPP, Mr. Ramotar said in December 2009 that he is “upset with the nonestablishment of the Public Procurement Commission.” This is not the word of Dr. Rose and Harish Singh; this is the word of His Excellency the President as verified in this article: http:// www.kaieteurnewsonline.com/ 2009/12/14/ramotar-upsetwith-non-establishment-ofpublic-procurementcommission/. Is this a situation of a classic flip-flop from His Excellency? Or is this a case of a sitting President who is incapable of fulfilling his basic promise to the people? As the holder of the highest

constitutional office, the President is the Leader of the Nation, he is the most powerful office holder in the land; but yet today he has concretized a reputation of being incapable of delivering on his word. As a matter of fact, the promises he made during the last election have been thrown in the dust bin. This is the habit of the cabal who over the years had promised the people the moon and the stars but has not even delivered a pale of water to them. But the people are aware of their false and empty promises as was reminded by the residents of East Bank Berbice that the President did not keep his promise to build the East Bank Berbice highway by 2013. He has not kept his promise to the people of Linden. But most importantly, the President has not fulfilled his promise to the nation to sanction those officials accused of corruption at NCN despite repeated recommendations from the Chairman and NCN Board of Directors to do so. Again, we asked, is he incapable of delivering on his word? You be the judge! The opposition, especially the leader of APNU, seems to lose sight on these

and other important issues because we were informed that he has not raised them with the President during their meetings. To Mr. Granger we say, do not compromise the rights of your supporters as your predecessor did for over a decade. To do so would result in you loosing the little credibility and trust you have left with the people. If the President is incapable to deliver on his word, how can we expect any better from his Ministers, Permanent Secretaries or the heads of various government agencies? We now understand why all the plans and programs in Guyana are in a constant state of decay and not delivering value for money for the people? If the President cannot keep his promises to the people, why should anyone else? We are convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt why the PPP did not win a majority of the votes in the last election despite spending over half billion dollars to stage a series of free concerts where words such as “If Jesus Christ could vote, he would have voted for the PPP” were uttered. We plead with His Excellency to revisit his statement of 2009 as well as others and use them to reevaluate what kind of partnership he really wants with the people; one based on “my word is my honour” or one based on “do not listen to me since I do not keep my promises” or “I have to consult my predecessor before I act.” Either way, this is not the way to govern a nation. Dr. Asquith Rose and Harish S. Singh

‘A’ Division policing groups sensitized on disaster preparedness The East La Penitence Policing Group yesterday hosted a workshop to enlighten communities within the Police ‘A’ Division, about the various aspects of disaster preparedness. At the Georgetown Club on Camp Street, the members of the different policing groups were briefed on a variety of natural and mancaused disasters. Those attending the workshop which commenced at around 09:00hrs and continued into the afternoon hours were not only taught how to equip themselves with lifesaving supplies, but also how to assist in preventing these disasters. Information gathered, and knowledge gained from the workshop, would be relayed to residents of the various communities via monthly meetings as well as house to house consultations. Key presentations were delivered by Coast Guard of the Guyana Defense Force, Lt. Richmond who briefed the gathering on aspects regarding River Search and Rescue. Mr. Colin Alleyne of the Guyana Fire Service dealt with Fire Prevention, and Deputy Commander of ‘A’ Divis i o n , M r. Ian Amsterdam talked about Protest/Riots, where he zeroed in on force used to disperse a crowd. “Use force only when strictly necessary, and to the extent required,” he said. Amsterdam also explained that when using force, there are certain principles to be observed: legality, necessity, and proportionality. He added that before using force, every attempt to use a non-violent method should be used. Medex, Ms. Carol Orna

talked about road accidents and trauma/ death, and first aid and transportation of the injured. Addressing specifically the preparedness of natural disasters, including floods, was Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup, who, via a PowerPoint presentation, explained that since G u y a n a ’s residential occupancy is on the coast, which is below sea level, persons should pay keen interest and take all necessary precautions. The issue of improper garbage disposal came up, and it was explained that proper garbage disposal is key in preventing floods. However, should there be massive floods, the sea-walls and properly manned outfall channels would play key roles. Meanwhile, some necessary equipment for disaster preparedness were outlined as personal and protective clothing; first aid kit; detection and monitoring equipment such as personal alarm kits and gas detection instruments; fire extinguishers; blankets, powder-free gloves and bags; cellular phones and/or

handheld radios; and for crowd control- flashlights, signs, and barricade. ‘Disaster preparedness’ generally refers to measures taken to prepare for, and reduce the effects of disasters. That is to predict, and where possible, prevent disasters, mitigate their impact on vulnerable populations, and respond to and effectively cope with their consequences. The workshop dealt with Disaster Plan, which refers to a systematic procedure that clearly details what needs to be done; how, when, where, and by whom, before the disaster actually occurs; Disaster Response, which is an aggregate of decisions and procedures taken to contain or mitigate the effects of a property, restore order in its immediate aftermath, and reestablish normality through reconstruction and rehabilitation shortly thereafter; and Disaster Relief which refers to the intervention aimed at meeting the immediate needs of the victims of a disastrous event. The first and immediate response is called the emergency response.

Bogus businessman strikes again A notorious confidence trickster known for his visa scam, car importation scam and several others has pounced on another victim. Only this time, the victim fooled the trickster into meeting him at a location where he was captured by the police. But William Ross, the victim, now claims that a police rank helped the suspect escape. It all started a little over a month ago when Ross handed over $200,000 to the alleged fraudster. The money was to secure rent for part of a building located at a “hot spot” in Diamond. Ross told Kaieteur News that he wanted to rent space from the trickster for the purpose of having a game shop. He said that he initially inquired about the place from a woman who posed as the con-man’s mother. “I believe is his mother indeed cause they got same nose. I went to her to find out about the place and explained what I wanted it for. She told me it is not her place; the place belonged to her daughter who wasn’t around. Anyhow, she gave me a number for her daughter which I kept calling and never got on to. I really wanted this place so I went back to her. She told me that she son will deal with it. When I met him he said that another man wanted the place as well and he is willing to pay five months deposit,” explained Ross. He said that the bogus property owner requested $40,000 a month for rental of the space so Ross paid 200,000 for five months. The money was handed over on June 14 and the fraudster even went to a lawyer to draft an agreement

- victim claims cop helped suspect escape that reflected the amount of money paid, for what reason and the duration. This document was seen by Kaieteur News. According to Ross, two days later, the man contacted him making another proposal. Ross said that he had discussed with the man that he was buying the equipment for his game shop online and that it came up to a total cost of 1.5M. So on that day, the bogus businessman told Ross that he had a container coming in and made him an offer to ship in all he needed at 400,000 less than the original cost. Ross leaped at the opportunity to save some cash. Ross told Kaieteur News that he was asked to provide $400,000 downpayment, and so he did. Ross was given a “receipt” after this money was paid. The fraudster then told his victim that he was getting a deal and could “throw” in a 600 watt Yamaha silent key generator and surveillance cameras. Those items were being procured at a cost of $240,000 and so Ross was asked to pay $98,000 down payment, which he did. After three weeks had elapsed, Ross made contact to find out what was going on. After being deferred to a later date on about five occasions, Ross finally began getting suspicious but he gave the ‘businessman’ the benefit of the doubt. Eventually, Ross was told that “everything was in the county and just has to be picked up”, the only problem being that a further $98,000 was needed. After telling a friend what was going on, the friend did an internet search and found articles by Kaieteur News about the bogus businessman’s previous encounters. Acting on advice given, Ross then asked the ‘businessman’ to meet him up at a cricket test match to hand over the cash. Police who

were at the scene cornered the ‘businessman’ and detained him. According to Ross, the suspect sat on a bench for about five minutes then went to a senior officer who was not stationed there. The ‘businessman’ allegedly then went over to Ross and asked the victim if he wanted his money back. “I said yes and he said okay. Then he went back to the officer. I saw them go downstairs and I thought he went to get booked or to speak to the officer. But like five minutes after I didn’t see he come back and I run downstairs, look out and his vehicle was gone. I asked a female officer where he went and she told me that he and the officers (name given) left and that all he told her was good afternoon,” Ross said. He said that after the fraudster had left the station, the rank with whom the man had left contacted him by phone and said that he was going to return with the money. “I end up being like de criminal cause I sat there on the bench for like two hour waiting. I called him back myself and all he tell me is ‘No man; you can’t call this phone’. Up to now nothing I could hear.” Kaieteur News contacted the police rank who denied that the suspect had left with him. The officer said that the cameras at the station can even be checked. He noted however, that, “I would like to find him (the suspect).” In 2009, the same fraudster was accused of obtaining $106,000 by pretending that he was in the position to get two men American visas and jobs. He was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years. That same year, the ‘businessman’ was remanded to prison for allegedly obtaining over $400,000 from a woman under the pretext that he could import a car for her.

Govt. disclosed full details of Amaila Project to Opposition By Kiana Wilburg Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has referred to the reasons submitted by the Joint Opposition for their non support of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project as “acts of desperation”. He added, “These attempts at manufacturing reasons are a demonstration that the politicians have now recognized the gravity of the wrongs they have done and rather than stand up like big men and accept their error they are engaged in machinations.” The Minister made mention of two comments, the first by the leader of Partnership for National Unity (APNU), David Granger who

- Attorney General

Attorney General, Anil Nandlall stated, “If the Project is badly managed, Amaila could do severe damage to the National Economy”. The second comment was

expressed by APNU’S shadow Minister of Finance, Carl Greenidge who pointed out that the “irregularities” with regard to the project are somewhat worrying. Nandlall noted that these very comments “constitute a weak, feeble and disgusting attempt to justify their non support of the Hydro Project”. “Fortunately, the Guyanese people are not that gullible. In simple terms, they appreciate that the Amaila Falls Project will result in a reduction of their light bills by a minimum of 25 percent and will contribute significantly to the

building and growth of a manufacturing sector that will propel Guyana to economic prosperity.” According to Nandlall, every conceivable detail with regard to the Amaila Falls Hydro Project was disclosed to the Joint Opposition by the Government and that engagements between the Government and the opposition on this matter began on March 2012, until last Tuesday. “Therefore, to convey the impression that the government has not been full and frank in their disclosures of details is a rank deception. Several meetings were held. Every single document was handed over. An opportunity was presented for the Opposition to meet with representatives of Sithe Global, the IDB and consultants who worked on the project. A trip was arranged for them to physically inspect the site itself as well as the road leading to the site. At none of these engagements did they convey the impression that they were dissatisfied with any aspect of the project.

Significantly, in the National Assembly none of the reasons which they have now concocted were advanced. In other words, they did not even feel obliged to offer the Guyanese people an explanation for their callous rejection of the project. The opposition should now be concerned with how they will justify to the Guyanese people that they killed a project recognized by Dr. Cheddi Jagan and L.F.S Burnham and every intelligent Guyanese as a vehicle to catapult the ordinary working class out of poverty. The opposition should now be concerned with how they will convince Guyanese of the millions of US dollars that have been wasted in the Amaila Falls Project, including nearly 25 million dollars on a road network that will now lead to nowhere.” Nandlall said that the notion raised by the leader of the Alliance for Change, Khemraj Ramjattan, that raising the country’s external debt ceiling to $150B is not a requirement of the InterAmerican Development Bank, is a “manifest absurdity since all contractual documents expressed that it is a requirement which is a condition precedent to the

project. Again this adds probative value to a statement I earlier made that Khemraj Ramjattan has a comprehension problem. All of this pandemonium and confusion is generated because of their desperate attempts in conjuring up justification for the greatest betrayal ever committed against the Guyanese people by those who profess to be their leaders. “In 20 years in government and while we were a majority in parliament we never sought to raise the debt ceiling before. The People’s National Congress Reform (PNC) did it five times in nine years in 1971 to 1980. Why would this administration seek to do it now if it is unconnected with the Amaila Falls project? The statements by Ramjattan are utter nonsense. “Every time Guyanese citizens face a blackout and they are confronted with an electricity bill that is exorbitant, they should remember that it is the Joint Opposition which is holding them captive in that predicament. History will absolve those who supported the Amaila Falls project and will condemn those who rejected it.”

Probe minister who bought Congresswoman welcomes plans to aid Caribbean immigrants house, BMW in Canada Trinidad Guardian - LP interim leader Jack Warner is calling for an investigation into a government minister who he said bought a house in Hamilton, Canada for $800,000 (Canadian dollars) and a BMW for his daughter to attend McMaster University in Hamilton, in less than three years. Warner said all of this was done on just a minister’s salary. He was addressing ILP supporters who came from across T&T and gathered in the muddy savannah at the Marchin Recreation Ground, Charlieville on Friday. When asked after the meeting to name the minister, Warner said: “Everybody knows who it is.” Warner said: “How come this same cabal minister has a brother who up to 2010 was on unemployment levy in Canada and now three years later is a big UNC contractor in T&T, even building play parks all over the country at ridiculously inflated prices? How come, Madam PM? How come? There is a book, titled Rich Man, Poor Man, but this minister should rewrite a new version, Poor Man, Rich Man.” Warner said he had been hustling money for the UNC long before he came into

- Jack Warner

Jack Warner government. He said: “Before I came into government, I have been soliciting the help of business interests, encouraging them to give back in support of the d i s a d v a n t a g e d , dispossessed and even the unfortunate ones in our society. That is no secret. Before we entered into government, my friend Kamla and I, all hours of the night, were in Fairways meeting with residents asking for and receiving their financial assistance, but I have no intention of ever exposing those residents. Never! “When we went into

government, that policy never changed. “As Minister of Works and Transport then, I had called on contractors who received millions of dollars from the Government annually, and I had asked them to do something for country and pave a road for free. “I wrote to businessmen asking them to expand their establishment even when there was no room, just to employ a man or a woman, a boy or a girl from the communities where they do business. So the practice of Jack Warner going to big business for help is nothing new.” Lashing out at the Prime Minister, Warner said: “...on your instruction and using the same Ministry of Works and Transport letterhead, I had even asked contractors to pave, without cost, the car park at the Divali Nagar site, which they did.” Warner said it was true that he wrote to contractors in his capacity as Minister of Works and Transport for assistance, not only for the Christmas parties but for other functions hosted by the ministry’s social events committee.

NEW YORK – CMC Caribbean-American Congresswoman Yvette D Clarke has welcomed a plan by New York City to aid undocumented Caribbean immigrants. New York City officials say the city will spend US$18 million to help undocumented Caribbean and other immigrants find jobs. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a mayoral candidate, said the money will fund adult education classes and legal services that the US federal government requires immigrants to take to qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project will provide free legal services to immigrants threatened with deportation who are unable to

represent themselves in proceedings. “New York has always been a city of immigrants within a nation of immigrants,” said Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn. “Under this program, thousands of immigrants in Brooklyn and other parts of the City will finally have an opportunity to challenge the deportation proceedings that separate families and weaken communities,” she added. The programme permits immigrants to live and work in the US, regardless of the outcome of an immigration reform bill currently in the House of Representatives, provided they are between 15 and 31 years old as of June

Yvette D Clarke 15, 2012. Nearly 80,000 immigrants living in New York are eligible for the deferred action, but about 16,000 need to enrol in an adult education programme to qualify.

Prime Minister urges hoteliers to look at the “big picture” CASTRIES, St. Lucia – CMC - Prime Minister Kenny Anthony has called on hoteliers to redefine their approach to the industry and do more to improve quality and mutually beneficial partnerships. Addressing the 49th annual general meeting of the St. Lucia Hotels and Tourism Association, the Prime Minister said developed countries such as the United States and Europe, which are major source markets for the industry, are currently jostling for number one status as visitor magnets. “The economic benefits

Kenny Anthony of travel and tourism are immense and no country can afford to ignore this fact in their future developmental

planning. Nowhere in the region has escaped the volatility of investment in the tourism sector. Hotels and resorts in the Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, and Cayman have been bought and sold as a result of the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s,” he said. The Prime Minister told the weekend convention that players in the tourism industry must look at “the bigger picture” and concentrate efforts on discovering what today’s traveler considers value for money.

Simpson Miller urges unity as nation goes through ‘economic transformation’ MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, has urged Jamaicans to “remain focused and keep their eyes on the ultimate goal as Jamaica goes through what is perhaps its most ambitious and far-reaching economic transformation programme.” According to Simpson Miller, in implementing that economic programme the administration “is aware that it’s now or never,” and it is “our last opportunity to get it right, to lay the foundation for our children, to ensure that we secure their future.” The Prime Minister was addressing the National Association of Jamaica and Supportive Organizations

(NAJASO), gala awards banquet at the Secrets Wild Orchid Hotel in Montego Bay, Saturday (July 20), where she was honoured with the Lignum Vitae Award for becoming the first female Prime Minister of Jamaica and for her contribution to the country’s political and economic welfare. The ceremony was the final event of the organisation’s 36th annual conference which ran from July 18 to 20 under the theme ‘NAJASO – A partnership for transformation’. “This is indeed a time for transformation. You have chosen this transformation theme at a time when Jamaica needs to mobilise all its

Portia Simpson Miller resources , p r i m a r i l y i t s human resources at home and abroad in one massive effort to transform this piece of rock, this jewel in the Caribbean Sea, Jamaica,” Simpson Miller said.

Eight found dead off the coast of Grand Bahama NASSAU, Bahamas – CMC - The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of eight bodies on the beach in Grand Bahama early Saturday. They initially found six bodies including that of a child on a beach at Holmes Rock, shortly after, two more bodies were discovered near a sunken boat, half a mile from the shore. According to the police, it’s believed that all eight were illegal immigrants who were trying to make their way to the United States. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hulan Hanna said further checks were carried out along the shoreline and at sea to ensure that there were no other bodies. “We got the assistance of the Americans and they took us about a half mile from the shore, and we were able to see

a boat submerged in the water. Outside of the boat, two bodies were seen on the floor of the sea.” He said assistance was being sought to refloat the boat as additional bodies could be inside. “We are hoping that our regional and international connections will help us determine who these people are” Hanna appealed to the public to contact the police if they knew anyone, particularly from area, who has been missing. He said the identities of the victims were not known and added that autopsies would be performed to determine the cause of death. “We don’t know the nationalities of the victims definitively, but again, the enormity of what we met here cannot be emphasized enough….please for God’s

Vaccine against cervical cancer Barbados Nation - Barbados is to offer pre-teens a vaccine that protects women against cervical cancer by yearend. The announcement was made Saturday by Chief Medical Officer Dr Joy St John in a speech to the annual conference of Cancer Support Services, a local charity, at Hilton Barbados. She said the move by the Ministry of Health stemmed from a concern over reported cases of cancers of the cervix, breast and prostate. The cervical cancer vaccine, which is recommended for females aged 11 to 26 years, has been in use in many countries. Just last month, health officials in the United States said its introduction there in 2006 had reduced infections with the human papillomavirus or HPV – the sexually transmitted virus that causes the disease – by more than half among girls and young women. The theme of the conference was: Living With Cancer: My Life After Diagnosis.

Nineteen Colombian soldiers killed in clashes with FARC rebels (Reuters) - Nineteen Colombian soldiers were killed in clashes blamed on the country’s Marxist FARC guerrillas, defence ministry sources said yesterday, the heaviest casualties the armed forces have suffered since the government began peace talks late last year. In the bloodier of the two separate attacks on Saturday, 15 soldiers were killed on a road linking two townships in Arauca province near the Venezuelan border, when they fired explosives at troops protecting an oil pipeline under construction. The FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, have a strong presence in the region and

Page 21

President Juan Manuel Santos, who travelled to the region yesterday confirmed the army casualties and said 12 guerrillas were captured during the attack. He ordered extra troops to the region to try to capture the rebels, some of whom had been injured. “These are the instructions to our forces: don’t stop shooting for even a moment until we reach the end of this conflict,” Santos said. “All of Colombia must work for peace precisely so that incidents like those that occurred in the last 24 hours never happen again.” Another four soldiers were killed in clashes in Caqueta province in the south of the country in clashes with the FARC, the army said, adding that six guerrillas were also killed. The FARC is the larger of two left-wing guerrilla movements in Colombia with around 8,000 fighters, the government says, about half the number it had a decade ago. The much smaller ELN, or National Liberation Army, which the FARC has recently strengthened ties, is believed to have around 1,500 guerrillas. The government began peace talks with FARC leadership in November last year with an agenda that includes disarmament, land reform and the FARC’s participation in politics. The talks are taking place in Havana, Cuba.

Some members of the graduating class. HAVANA, Cuba — The Jamaican medical system will be boosted by the injection of 68 newly trained medical doctors within weeks. The Jamaican doctors graduated from the Medical Faculty of the University of Santiago de Cuba last Tuesday in a short and spicy ceremony that lasted an hour and 13 minutes, much less than any of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. And while there were no elaborate verbal utterances by those authorised to speak, the ceremony was resplendent with fascinating oral and cultural presentations, that saved the hundreds who witnessed it from boredom. The Jamaicans started their course of study in November 2006 with 70 students under the Cuban education assistance programme, but two returned to the island by year-end for personal reasons. Of the 68 graduates in an overall field of 717, including

373 Cubans, almost half the number of Jamaicans walked away with first class honours. The majority of them will return home by late August to begin another phase of their medical journey and will be based at leading hospitals across the island for their internship — Kingston Public, Cornwall Regional, Spanish Town, and St Ann’s Bay. Dr Matthew Lloyd O’Connor, 26, emerged the most outstanding foreign student from a group of 344. The Lilliput, St James resident, who attended Cornwall College, spoke on behalf of the foreign students, hailing the Cuban medical and education systems and expressing gratitude for the hospitality and kindness of the Cuban people. “We will try to use the knowledge gained to improve health care in Jamaica,” O’Connor told the Jamaica Observer afterwards.

“In my own case, I will be working closely with my community to give back, because one of the principles of the Cuban system is giving back,” said the Cornwall College head boy from 2005 to 2006. The Jamaican doctors, dressed in laboratory coats, were greeted with loud cheers as they went up to be recognised for their outstanding work. “They are good students,” said Professor Juan Carlos Sanchez, who teaches Medical English at the university and who has served as an interpreter for Jamaican delegations over the years. “The Jamaicans are very popular and they are nice kids. I get on well with them,” he said. Unlike the typical Jamaican graduation, the mode of dress of the medical school ranged from lounge suit to casual wear, including T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and caps.

Egypt starts amending constitution despite political divisions CAIRO (Reuters) - A panel of legal experts started work yesterday to revise Egypt’s Islamist-tinged constitution, a vital first step on the road to fresh elections ordered by the army following its removal of Mohamed Mursi as president. Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which has accused the army of orchestrating a military coup and denounced plans to revise the constitution, staged fresh rallies on Sunday to maintain pressure on the new, interim government. Setting a highly ambitious timeframe, the military wants new elections in around six months and has tasked a panel of 10 legal experts to present proposed changes to the constitution within 30 days for review before a broader-based body. The original constitution was approved by a referendum last year, but critics said the text failed to protect human rights, minorities and social justice. Ali Awad Saleh, a judge and the constitutional affairs adviser for the newly installed president, chaired yesterday’s

panel, saying it would spend the next week receiving ideas from “citizens, political parties, and all sides”. Khaled Dawoud, a spokesman for the National Salvation Front, Egypt’s main secular political alliance, called the start of the committee’s work “a very positive development”. The Muslim Brotherhood has shown no sign it is ready to engage with the new administration or the army, sticking firmly to its demand for the full restoration of Mursi, who has been held in an undisclosed location since his downfall on July 3. Army and judiciary sources denied a report in state-run Al-Ahram newspaper’s early Monday edition that the public prosecutor had ordered the arrest of Mursi for 15 days pending an investigation into charges of spying and inciting violence. A few thousand women, children and men marched from the site of a round-theclock, pro-Mursi vigil in a Cairo suburb yesterday, moving to within sight of the defense ministry, ringed by

barbed wire and protected by well-armed soldiers. “Why, Sisi why, why did you kill our sisters?” the crowd chanted, referring to General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the defense minister who played a central role in forcing Mursi from office following mammoth street protests against the Islamist ruler. More than 100 people have died in violent clashes this month, including three women taking part in a pro-Mursi rally in the Nile Delta town of Mansoura on Friday. Trying to burnish their democratic credentials, the Egyptian military has said the new constitution should be put to a referendum before planned parliamentary elections. However, some analysts have expressed doubts about rushing to revise the text given the lack of political consensus that has clouded Egypt’s faltering transition to democracy in the wake of the 2011 removal of veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak. “The problem is not amending or drafting the

Abdel Fattah al-Sisi constitution, the problem is deciding the direction the country is headed,” said Zaid Al-Ali of International IDEA, a Stockholm-based intergovernmental organization. “Unless political agreement is reached between all of the major political actors in the country, we are going to head from one crisis to another,” he said.

Despite the continued domestic tensions, the new government is trying to show the world that business is returning to normal in Cairo. On Sunday, the cabinet held its first meeting since being sworn into office last week. “The people need to be informed candidly about the size of Egypt’s problems, which require quick and decisive action,” said a statement issued at the end of the gathering. Egypt’s finances are floundering: the budget deficit has widened to almost half of all state spending and foreign reserves totaled just $14.9 billion in June representing less than three months of imports that the International Monetary Fund considers to be a minimum safe cushion. Some of Egypt’s Arab alliesJohn welcome Mursi’s Boehner demise and have rushed to prop up the nation’s coffers, however. Egypt’s central bank said on Sunday it had received $2

billion in funds from Saudi Arabia, the latest installment of a $12 billion aid package pledged by Gulf Arab states. The Egyptian stock exchange rose to a sevenweek high on Sunday, encouraged by a lack of violence at weekend “anticoup” protests in Cairo, hoping it indicated tensions are calming. However, violence continued in the lawless Sinai peninsula, where three members of Egypt’s security forces were killed on Sunday by armed men - the latest in a string of attacks blamed on Islamist militants opposed to the army. Mursi was Egypt’s first freely elected leader, but during his one year in office he drew criticism for failing to revive the ailing economy, restore security or build institutions. The Muslim Brotherhood say they were repeatedly thwarted by remnants of Mubarak’s old government and forces hostile to them.

Boehner refuses to take stand on key immigration provision (Reuters) - House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner refused yesterday to say whether a comprehensive immigration overhaul should include a

John Boehner path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, declaring that the House debate is “not about me.” Boehner, appearing on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” dodged repeated attempts to get him to spell out his personal views on a path to citizenship for up to 11 million illegal immigrants now in the United States, a major point of contention between the House and the Democraticled Senate. “It’s not about me, it’s not about what I want,” said Boehner, an Ohio Republican. “This about allowing the House to work its will.” The Senate has passed a sweeping, bipartisan immigration bill that includes a pathway to citizenship, which Republican opponents have called an “amnesty” that

would reward lawbreakers and attract more illegal immigrants. Boehner said taking a personal stand on the issue would make it harder for him to find consensus on immigration in the House. “If I come out and say, ‘I’m for this and I’m for that,’ all I’m doing is making my job harder,” Boehner said. “My job in this process is to facilitate a discussion and to facilitate a process.” Boehner said the sweeping Senate bill would not pass the House and reiterated that the House would tackle the issue in smaller “chunks” that would include stricter provisions on border protection. “We want to deal with this in chunks, chunks that the members can deal with and grapple with, and frankly chunks that the American people can get their arms around,” he said. With polls showing public approval of Congress at near record lows, Boehner was asked how he felt to have presided over the least productive and one of the least popular Congresses. “We should not be judged by how many new laws we create. We ought to be judged on how many laws we repeal,” Boehner said. Republicans have made repeal of President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul one of the party’s top priorities.

Sex scandals cloud Zimbabwe PM’s election campaign (Reuters) - Zimbabwe’s sole television station, stateowned and tightly controlled by President Robert Mugabe, is targeting the private life of his arch rival Morgan Tsvangirai with “attack ads” aimed at discrediting him before July 31 elections. In the adverts, three former lovers reveal how they were dumped by Tsvangirai, 61, before Mugabe’s ZANUPF party chimes in to tell voters that the prime minister is unfit for office. While there are many questions about the tone and taste of the adverts in the socially conservative southern African nation, the message is rubbing off on even die-hard Tsvangirai supporters, who say he has only himself to blame. “Five years ago, I would have risked my life for Tsvangirai. I would have assaulted anyone who insulted him,” said Gerald Mlambo in the eastern city of Mutare, a Tsvangirai stronghold. Now Mlambo is sufficiently racked by doubts to stay away from a nearby stadium where deafening music and a huge crowd chanting anti-Mugabe slogans are revving up for a campaign rally appearance by his one-time idol. Tsvangirai’s sex scandals, along with his failure to deliver on key promises while in government, have steadily

Morgan Tsvangirai eroded the almost messianic support he once enjoyed among many of Zimbabwe’s 13 million people for daring to challenge the threedecade rule of the ruthless and cunning Mugabe. Since the death of Tsvangirai’s wife Susan in a car crash in 2009 - the year after he and Mugabe sealed a power sharing deal - the prime minister has fathered a child with a 22-year-old woman and been locked in a court battle with another lover. The Harare media also feasted on the claims of a South African woman who said Tsvangirai ditched her by SMS after a two-year affair studded with expensive, exotic holidays. Tsvangirai’s supporters point out that Mugabe, 89, has also been no angel in his personal life, having fathered

two children out of wedlock with Grace Mugabe, a secretary 41 years his junior whom he married after the death of his first wife, Sally. But Tsvangirai’s troubled private life has been a gift to propagandists working to ensure Mugabe carries on as president, a post he has held since independence from Britain in 1980. For the prime minister’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the campaign ads merely serve as proof that Mugabe and ZANU-PF have nothing to offer the country. “They are desperate,” MDC spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said. “Thank God, no one is listening and people are going to dump them come July 31 because our country needs politicians and leaders who focus on policies.” But Tsvangirai faces criticism over his track record too, after five years as prime minister in the South Africabrokered unity government under Mugabe that followed the bloody and disputed 2008 election. His first promise was to end an economic crisis that had triggered inflation of 500 billion percent, unemployment of 80 percent and a stream of economic refugees into South Africa, Zimbabwe’s larger southern neighbour. On that front, he has

Cameron urges Google, Yahoo to act on child pornography (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron challenged the Internet search engine providers Google, Yahoo and Bing yesterday to block images of child abuse, calling for more action against online pornography. In a television interview, Cameron said search engines must block results for searches using blacklisted keywords to stop Internet users accessing illegal images. Evidence in two recent high-profile child murders in Britain has shown that the killers accessed online child pornography. Although search companies have pledged to help remove images from the Internet, Cameron says he wants them to go further. “I have a very clear message for Google, Bing, Yahoo and the rest. You have a duty to act on this - and it is a moral duty,” Cameron was due to say in a speech today,

David Cameron according to an advance text, demanding that the companies report back to him in October on their progress. Cameron also said the government was ready to introduce new laws if search engine providers did not offer enough cooperation. Last week, U.S. authorities said they had arrested 255 people suspected of sexually

exploiting children online in a cross-border operation involving eight other countries. In June, Google donated around 3 million pounds to combat the problem, including 1 million pounds to the Internet Watch Foundation, a group committed to ridding the Internet of child pornography. “We have a zero tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse imagery. Whenever we discover it, we respond quickly to remove and report it,” a Google spokesperson said. Bing, owned by Microsoft Corp, said it would support education and deterrence campaigns and that it was working with the British government to determine the best industrywide approach to tackle illegal content. Yahoo was not immediately available for comment.

largely delivered: scrapping the worthless Zimbabwe dollar in early 2009 stabilised prices and since then the economy has bounced back strongly. But as memories of the economic meltdown have faded and the grind of dayto-day government has set in, the former trade unionist has lost some of his shine. MDC-headed ministries have struggled to deliver promised dams and electricity plants and to overhaul dilapidated water and sewage systems, while the questions have mounted about Tsvangirai’s character and ability to govern. “They promised so much and delivered so little. I don’t buy the nonsense that ZANU-PF is to blame for our condition,” said John

Cheukai, a 40-year-old labourer at a Mutare timber firm. “Tsvangirai has a responsibility to manage his life in an exemplary manner. Based on some of the things we have seen from the MDC, people are not so hopeful anymore.” While there are no formal opinion polls, surveys conducted by Freedom House, a U.S. political think tank, and African research group Afro-Barometer give Mugabe a narrow lead. Critics say Tsvangirai is woolly on policy and weak on principles, pointing to how readily he dropped opposition to Mugabe’s homophobia and seizure of white-owned farms, and how he took up the fight for media

and security reform only weeks before the election. His lieutenants argue Tsvangirai has taken the strategic view of pushing through a new constitution that balances power between the president and parliament, while parking other issues on the sidelines until the MDC comes to power. The path to power remains far from assured. “The MDC ran most of the local councils very badly,” said 50-year-old financial analyst Boniface Chirandu in the town of Chimanimani on the Mozambican border. “That, coupled with issues over Tsvangirai’s private life, has persuaded me - and I’m sure others too - that the MDC cannot take our vote for granted.”

Japan urges Britain to keep ‘major role’ in EU

LONDON (Reuters) - Japan has added its voice to international calls for Britain to maintain a leading role in the European Union, saying that membership is a key advantage for companies looking to access Europe’s single market. British Prime Minister David Cameron’s promise to renegotiate Britain’s role in the EU and hold a referendum on EU membership by 2017 has already been greeted with concern by the United States among others. A senior official in Barack Obama’s administration said in January that the United States needed London to retain a “strong voice” within the EU, and last week British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that withdrawal from the EU would deter investors, undermine trade and damage Britain’s global status. Japan submitted its statement to a review ordered by Cameron into the balance of power between London and Brussels. The submission highlighted that more than 1,300

companies have invested in Britain, creating 130,000 jobs. “The advantage of the UK as a gateway to the European market has attracted Japanese investment. The Government of Japan expects the UK to maintain this favorable role,” a statement on Japan’s British embassy website said. “The (Japanese) government is committed to making its relationship with the EU stronger than ever before. In this context, it expects that the UK will maintain a strong voice and continue to play a major role in the EU.” In 2011 Japan ranked as the ninth-largest foreign investor in Britain and fourth-largest excluding EU states. Official data showed the stock of Japanese investment in Britain was worth 31 billion pounds ($47.30 billion). Japanese companies Toyota and Nissan manufacture cars in Britain and this month Hitachi won a 1.2 billion pound contract to build 270 train carriages in the north of England.

Truckers ordered to pay fee to enter Linden By Keeran Danny Efforts by Linden’s municipality to meet the minimum wage requirement for staffers are hurting the pockets of truckers passing through the township. The by-laws that cater for fees such as vending, trucking, and fuel tankers were not being rigidly enforced. As such, the Mayor and Town Council was forced to tighten enforcement to ensure funds are raised to pay staff and meet other expenses. But truckers are

- IMC enforcing by-law to pay staff minimum wage displeased with this scenario and are questioning why they have to pay to enter Linden, which is a part of Guyana. According to a truck driver, he was never informed about the fees to enter Linden until Saturday when he was stopped by employees of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Mayor and Town Council.

“I coming out and all of a sudden I see these two men pull two barriers across the road and I want know what going on…So one of the men asked if I pay to go in and I said ‘no skipper’, and he tell me I have to pay to come out. But, I didn’t pay; that is craziness,” he said. The man said this demand of the IMC is uneconomical and is only adding to the high

maintenance costs of machineries and services provided. “Imagine they want I pay $5,000 to enter Linden then I have to pay $1,000 to cross the Linden-Wismar Bridge and then all those crossings. What they think gon happen? Somebody has to bear the cost,” he added. The man said if persons have to pay to enter Linden, persons coming out of Linden should pay a toll at Soesdyke/ Linden Highway. According to Orrin Gordon, Chairman of the IMC, this by-law was enacted in 1995 and in 2003 the fees were created by the Council.

The fees remain the same and are now being rigidly enforced to allow the Council to pay staff the minimum wage of $35,000 monthly. While the Ministry of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance and construction of public roads in Linden, the IMC is responsible for the community roads. However, with heavy-duty vehicles traversing the various roads, the roads have to be repaired regularly. In addition, other services such as garbage have to be executed with the Council’s limited resources. Gordon does not believe that the fees being charged

are unreasonable or the situation is one of a milking cow. He said only vehicles entering are required to pay the fee. Those exiting do not have to pay. In addition, trucks traversing Linden carry cargo either in or out of Linden and a small sum would not affect operations. But, according to the driver, sometimes a driver may need to enter Linden several times in one day and would be forced to pay the same toll. According to Gordon, an arrangement has been worked out with contractors building roads in Linden to pay a smaller amount than required.

By Javone Vickerie A fire of unknown origin yesterday destroyed a home owned by a miner who departed for the interior just two days ago. According to an eyewitness, around 11:00 hrs yesterday, smoke was seen billowing from the small wooden structure. The source added that by the time residents tried to save the structure, it was already engulfed. “I was at home when I heard a neighbour shouting, fire! fire! And when I looked outside I saw the black smoke coming from the area, but the boy that does live in the house was not home at the time of the fire”, a resident said. He added that by the time the fire service was called in, the wooden house was already destroyed. Another resident said that he believed that the fire was as a result of arson. “Well I don’t know if he had any issues with the neighbours

Electrician dies after fall from utility pole A 24-year-old electrician died at around 15:00 hrs yesterday after falling from a Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) utility pole at Le Resouvenir, East Coast Demerara. Family members identified the dead man as Ronald Arthur of Lot 69 Pompey Street, Christiansburg. Kaieteur News was told that the father of a two-month-old baby girl was employed by Dynamics Engineering Company as an electrician. The engineering company is reportedly subcontracted by GPL. According to information, Arthur was on the utility pole when it reportedly collapsed with him, pinning him to the ground. He was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in an unconscious state where he died shortly after. Arthur’s relatives said that they were still to be informed about the circumstances that led to his death. However, a relative told Kaieteur News that the electrician’s employer was giving a statement to ranks at the Sparendaam Police Station.

Tour de France: Chris Froome wins 100th edition of race BBC Sport - Britain’s Chris Froome has won the 100th edition of the Tour de France. Taking the title by more than four minutes, he linked arms with his team-mates as he crossed the line in Paris. It is Britain’s second successive victory in the race - Froome’s Team Sky colleague Sir Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win it a year ago. Marcel Kittel claimed the final stage in the twilight, with Manxman Mark Cavendish third in a hotly contested sprint along the Champs Elysees. Cavendish was attempting a 26th Tour stage win - and a fifth on the trot in Paris - which would have put him third on the all-time list behind five-time Tour winners Eddy Merckx (34) and Bernard Hinault (28). But he was edged out by a wheel length by Germany’s Kittel and Andre Greipel in the French capital, with more than 350,000 spectators lining the streets. Froome had finished runner-up last year but with Wiggins electing not to defend his title after injury problems , the 28-year-old was favourite to win the race and he brought the yellow jersey home in emphatic

style, ahead of Colombian Nairo Quintana and Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain. He had first taken the lead when he won the eighth of the 21 stages in a summit finish at Ax 3 Domaines in the Pyrenees. The Briton, who was born and raised in Kenya, claimed a further two stages in his maiden Tour de France title. He told ITV4: “Crossing the line with [the] guys brought tears to my eyes. I expected it to be big but this is something else. “Dave [Team Sky manager Sir Dave Brailsford] has been talking about the future of cycling - the youngsters coming through and the way the sport is moving. I look at the last decade and the way sport is going - we’ve got something to be proud of.” But in the first Tour since disgraced rider Lance Armstrong admitted to doping in his seven Tour de France wins , which have since been expunged from the records, Froome found himself having to answer questions about drugs in the sport. He added: “I’m glad I’ve had to face those questions after all the revelations of the last year. I’m glad that’s been channelled towards me. “I’ve

Regional U-19 tourney

Barbados beat Guyana by 8 wkts Barbados completed an eight wicket victory over Guyana in the first round of the Regional U-19 three day tournament yesterday at Warner Park in St. Kitts. Trailing by 38 runs, Guyana resumed the final day on 334 with Kamesh Yadram and Steven Sankar on 2 each. Sankar (02) was the first wicket to fall before Yadram went for 23 to leave Guyana at 60-6. Shawn Pereira was then bowled for 5 at 61-7 before Ricardo Adams and Romario Shepherd stemmed the flow of wickets with an eight wicket stand of 24. Shepherd was then caught and bowled by Jerome Jones for 13 as Guyana slipped to 85-8. Adams was caught at long leg hooking at a short ball from Shamar Springer, while Denesh Mangal was removed by Jofra Archer for 4 as Guyana were bowled out for 111 in 35.4 overs. Archer 4-42 and Springer 2-12 were the pick of the bowlers for the Bajans. Barbados needed 41 to win, but Gudakesh Motie Kanhai removed Walcott (01) and Drakes (00) to reduced them to 10-2 before Aaron Jones and Boyce saw their team home with a third wicket stand of 33 as they finished on 43-2 in 15.3 overs.

been able to deal with it. Cycling has changed - the peloton is standing together.” In his victory speech while standing on the podium, Froome dedicated his triumph to his mother Jane, who died of cancer in 2008, for giving him “hopes and dreams”. “Without her encouragement to follow my dreams, I’d probably be at home watching this event on TV,” he said. “It’s a great shame she never got to come see the Tour, but I’m sure she’d be extremely proud if she were here tonight.” He also thanked his Team Sky colleagues for “burying themselves” for him during the gruelling race. “I’d like to thank my team-mates, who have buried themselves day in day out throughout this Tour to keep this yellow jersey on my shoulders, and the Team Sky management for believing in my ability and building this team around me. “This is one yellow jersey that will stand the test of time,” he added, in a reference to doubters over doping suspicions. The final stage started as a procession, as is the tradition, and the 170 riders headed off from Versailles with Rodriguez celebrating his third place overall by handing out cigars to fellow podium finishers Froome, donning a yellow bike, and Quintana. The Brit was also handed a glass of celebratory champagne as he rode alongside a Team Sky car with its branding coloured in yellow, while he was surrounded by team-mates in special yellow-tinged sunglasses. The sun was beginning to set as they arrived in the centre of Paris and Froome made sure his trusty wingman Richie Porte led the Sky train over the finish line of the Champs-Elysees on the first of 10 circuits. A few riders attempted breakaways, included Britain’s David Millar, but they were swallowed up by the peloton and it was left to the sprinters to contest the final straight. Overall classification final standings 1. Chris Froome (GB) Team Sky 83 hours, 56 minutes, and 40 seconds 2. Nairo Quintana (Col) Movistar +4:20 3. Joaquim Rodriguez (Spa) Katusha +5:04 4. GABBFF Seniors ‘Bodies of Steel’

Kerwin Clarke crowned Mr. Guyana, dethrones Devon Davis; Alisha Fortune is top female By Franklin Wilson Even two blackouts by GPL didn’t deter bodybuilding fans and lovers from enjoying an evening of fierce competition that ended early on Sunday morning with Kerwin Clarke of Buddy’s Gym being crowned the new Mr. Guyana by president of the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF), Keavon Bess. It brought to an end the GABBFF’s 2013 seniors competition which was held under the theme. ‘Bodies of Steel’. The turnout of athletes and the high level of competitiveness witnessed signals that the sport is on the competitive rise again. Clarke, who was exposed to several weeks of expert training in the USA by Internationally renowned Guyanese Hugh Ross, had earlier won the Light Heavyweight category. Looking well chiseled and balanced, Clarke had to pull out all the stops to fight off a gallant battle from Devon Davis of the Guyana Defence Force Gym and 2012 Mr. Guyana who topped the Bantamweight class, earlier. The battle for the Mr. Guyana title also featured the following category winners, Alston Lancaster of Windero Gym of Berbice – the Lightweight champ, fellow gym mates Abdul Shaheer (Junior Under-21) and Dwayne Mars (Heavyweight), Godfrey Stoby (Welterweight) of Tower Gym and Kevin Bobb-Semple (Flyweight) of Total Fitness Gym.

The supporters of the various athletes did not let up in terms of vociferous support despite spending way longer than they had bargained for. The Judges had their work cut out given the fine work put in by the athletes to bring their bodies up to a very competitive standard. Many were the comparisons on the night in four of the categories including the final pose down. Clarke wasn’t required for the comparison in the finals as requested by the judges and that in itself give some indication that he was in line for the title. Davis, Dwayne Mars and Alston Lancaster were the three athletes required for the comparison and the former Mr. Guyana and CAC gold medalist got the nod for the runner up position. Reigning Ms. Guyana, the multi talented Alisha Fortune of the Guyana Defence Force Gym, again proved her superiority on the distaff side by easily taking the Miss Body Fitness title from Winero’s Candace Lynch. The largest and most competitive category on the night was among the Heavyweight’s, the clash of the big boys. Nine (9) of Guyana’s best, lined up before the judges and audience as they sought to gain the nod as the best in this category. It wasn’t easily sailing as the judges had to seek three sets of comparisons before arriving at the top four.

Winner Dwayne Mars, 2nd placed Owen Jordan of Fitness Paradise and one of the favorites to win, Interline Fitness’ Andel Cameron who copped 3rd and veteran Lindie Sharpe of Universal Barbell Club of Linden who took the 4th place, were first up for comparisons. Rhon Loncke of Buddy’s Gym, Cameron, Sharpe and Windero’s Alex Hamilton were next while the final four were Loncke, Xtreme Fitness’ Quincy Stoby, Total Fitness’ Michael Dos Santos and Abdul Shaheer of Windero Gym. Shaheer had earlier won the Junior Under-21 class from three other juniors. Stoby easily won the Welterweight category from Buddy’s Ronair Caesar. The Lightweight division also saw the judges requesting a comparison among the winner, Alston Lancaster, Marlon Bennette (Xtreme Fitness) who took 2nd and the 3rd placed Rawle Cole of Buddy’s Gym. Kevin Bobb-Semple, who had placed second to Shaheer in the Junior Under-21s, returned to win the top spot in the Lightweight class, while 55-year-old Linde Sharpe was way too sharp for his rivals in the Masters Over40 showdown which featured the oldest competitor on the night, 64-year-old Noel Cummings of Buddy’s Gym. All the first place winners were presented with supplement hampers compliments of Fitness Express.

Belony prevails as GASP resumes itinerary

In this photo Belony is flanked by Gafoor and Cave (L & R respectively). National Scrabble Champion, Abigail McDonald could not compete when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players staged a National Open Championship, the first tournament since she regained her crown. Her rival, Moen Gafoor, participated but just could not seize the honours from Leon Belony whose top performance netted him 6 points and a positive spread of 376.

Gafoor notched up 5 points and a positive spread of 806 to seal off the second place, while Wayne Cave continued to show vast improvement when he sealed off the podium spots with 4 points and a positive spread of 107. Belony benefited from a bye but also defeated Grace Hercules (200), Robert Williams (21), Gafoor (15) and Cave (61).
