LOVE IS SACRIFICE DEAR EDITOR, On the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, Muslims remember and honour the trials and triumphs of Prophet Ibraham/Abraham (Peace Be Upon Him). Additionally, we recognise that all blessings come from God and that we should open our hearts and share the bounties he has bestowed upon us with others. As Muslims across the globe celebrate and honour the historic willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his beloved son for the sake of Almighty Allah, we, the Guyana Islamic Forum for Education, Peace and Religious Solidarity, the Electric Mosque’s Presentation of the Teachings of Islam, in association with the Universal Peace Federation – Guyana, seize this opportunity to extend Eid-ul-Adha greetings to the nation of Guyana, His Excellency, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, and family, distinguished members of the Government, the Opposition, and especially to our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters.
It must be known that the practice of sacrificing an animal on this occasion has nothing to do with atoning for sins or cleansing ourselves of sin with its blood. This symbolic act represents our readiness to forego some of our own blessings in order to envelop and maintain our relationship with God, with others, and, most importantly, to provide a helping hand to the poor and needy. As a result, the meat from the Eidul-Adha sacrifice is distributed in three ways: to oneself, to relatives, and to the needy. It is a gesture of humanity to share with those in need who do not have the same access to nourishment as we do. What we truly need to grasp is that, in order to offer sacrifices to the Almighty, we must symbolically go to the same lengths as the Prophet Abraham. That is to say, sacrificing an animal alone is insufficient as Almighty God says, “Never does their flesh or blood reach Allah, but your piety successfully reaches him.” (Quran – 22:37). In light of the forgoing, we
encourage everyone to use this opportunity to open their hearts and minds, and to learn to uphold the noble ideals of unwavering service to Almighty God and humanity in general. We pray that this Eid-ulAdha will deepen our relationship with others, foster harmony, as well as provide peace, prosperity, and well-being to the people of Guyana and throughout the world, especially as we are once again forced to celebrate this festivity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We pray that our selfless sacrifices will bring happiness into our lives and provide salvation for us in the hereafter. Our prayers are also with all those who may be unable to celebrate this occasion with proper revelry due to poverty or other afflictions at this time. Rural public road upgrade on the island of Wakenaam DEAR EDITOR, It was reported in the media on July 18, that the Minister in the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) visited the island of Wakenaam in the Essequibo River, to inspect and announce that the MPW has allocated $120 million to reconstruct two sections of the island’s public road, miles apart and will be using concrete as the principal construction material. A photo accompanying the report showed the minister and other officials inspecting a section of the public road with several potholes filled
with water and the shoulders overgrown with bananas and coconuts trees. It was evident that reconstruction of this section of the public road will require that the shoulders be cleared of the thick vegetation and graded to accommodate drains for the quick runoff of rainfall on the roadway, if its foundation is to be stabilised for the intended load. I was not privy to the specs and design for the upgrade for the two sections of public road on the island, but I expect good engineering practice to prevail in their reconstruction.

It is inconceivable that the MPW has specified that concrete, an expensive construction material will be used to upgrade a rural public road on the island of Wakenaam, when cheaper road building materials could be obtained locally and utilised to achieve the desired objectives. Concrete is rarely used worldwide for road construction because of its high construction and maintenance costs. Parliament should not be a ‘pappy-show’ DEAR EDITOR, Today, I felt a sense of sadness and sorrow on reading of the motion and counter-motions of ‘NoConfidence’ by our Government and Opposition. In normal circumstances, it ought to have been an occasion for mirth and a laughable distraction. However, because there is so much to gain and so much more to lose, the citizens of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana should put in Parliament, men and women led by purportedly intelligent persons who should not make our Parliament a ‘pappyshow,’ and a chapter fit for best forms of comedy. It appears that our leaders on both sides of the political divide are consumed with their own forms of narcissism and self-righteousness to the extent that they are either unwilling or tragically unable to analyse and see the broader picture that ought to be obvious to any sane and right thinking leaders. For example, apart from our known wealth, even the negative things are miniscule when compared to other countries. When we talk about floods, only a few families, livestock and farms in certain areas are affected. Over the years, Guyana experienced little loss of human life due to flooding. Last week in Germany, severe flooding has caused several deaths and a hotel had its first three floors inundated. Because of lack of cooperation and inability for Parliamentarians to engage in a civilised dialogue on and important health issues such as Covid-19, we are yet to reach our target of herd immunity and the death rate keeps rising. GPHC responds to absurd statements DEAR EDITOR, The Administration of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is extremely perturbed by the absurd statements made by Mr. Ronald R.G. Cox in a recent Facebook post. In his post, Mr. Cox insinuates that the meals provided for patients, particularly maternal patients, does not constitute a balanced diet. Further, Mr. Cox makes menacing comments that question the competency of the staff at the GPHC. Mr. Cox’s callous action misrepresented the situation, was most irresponsible and demonstrated a lack of respect for the dedicated, committed and conscientious healthcare professionals at the GPHC. We wish to assure Mr. Cox and the general populace that although the GPHC, like most institutions, is faced with challenges and limitations, this institution boasts a cadre of the most talented and well-trained health care professionals who demonstrate the ability to provide the highest quality of care for patients. Concurrently, we acknowledge the need for continuous improvement at the Corporation, which is the foundation for our unceasing investment in training and education for all categories of staff. While we can appreciate Mr. Cox’s concern for his wife’s treatment and care at the institution, the administration rejects prejudicial, unsubstantiated, and malevolent statements about the performance of our dedicated and committed staff and the services we

provide. We condemn in the strongest possible manner the insinuation that our interventions, including the preparation and provision of meals is not done with our patient’s best interest being considered. Indeed, it is quite disappointing that Mr. Cox, knowing his wife’s medical condition and knowing the conditions of similar patients, would not understand the treatment regimen and be so disapproving of the meal provided. All that was required was a simple query to the medical staff who would have provided the necessary clarification. Medical ethics prevent the Corporation from divulging the particulars of Mr. Cox’s wife’s medical management; however, we categorically state that all meals prepared by our dietary staff are guided by a team of trained and capable nutritionists who design appropriate meal plans based on the unique pathology of our patients. For instance, when managing patients with underlying conditions such as diabetes, provision is made for six (6) meals, which are dietetically calculated and prepared daily to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, while at the said time, keeping the patient satisfied. The GPHC commits to providing three (3) main meals and three (3) snacks that constitute a healthy balance of all food groups. Additionally, patients receive nutritional education so that they are able to understand the importance of maintaining
healthier food choices for disease management during and after their hospitalisation. The provision of quality care, including balanced diets, remains our top priority and this administration is proud to be able to provide our patients with the appropriate serving of fresh vegetables daily despite the limited availability of fresh produce occasioned by recent flooding. At the GPHC, we see our healthcare professionals providing care to hundreds of patients, daily, despite internal and external challenges that are often beyond our control. We commend their resilience and dedication to providing quality patient care, and their commitment to learning and improving in the interest of our patients. Mr. Cox notes in his post, the “nightmare revelations” of former patients at the Ocean View facility, a facility where almost 2,000 intensive care patients have been nursed back to health from the cusps of a deadly disease by an exceptional team of health care professionals, and have been able to return to their families. The few accounts of dissatisfaction that Mr. Cox exaggerates in his rant, have never gone unnoticed nor unattended by the Corporation. To date, numerous interventions have been made and continue to be made to enhance the quality of the food and services at the facility, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to make improvements in our patient’s best interest. THINGS THAT AMUSE DEAR EDITOR, I try to see the lighter side of life, but run into walls all over, regardless of who is encountered. It is mainly silly people, a sillier age (not season), and the silliest developments. I supply samples. The latest from the mighty USA is that the US Fish and Wildlife Service is renaming “Asian Carp” because it could be considered offensive. What is wrong with these people? Have they nothing better to do? If we continue along this path, then next in line would be “Demerara Rum” which to the sensitive may signify that all Guyanese are addled in the head, and run around as chronic drunken lunatics. Talk about rum for bums, and it fits. Now proceed! Sue me. So, what are we going to do with Chinese Kung-Fu and Indian snake charmers? Convert the former to Far Eastern self-defense and the latter to Himalayan safety officers? When does this confounded nonsense cease? And how about that one that tickles endlessly: the opposition? I would appreciate if some wise and sober
Guyanese enlighten me as to what, if anything, that it has opposed in its current life. Then there is this other shabby affair surrounding democracy. In my book, democracy means freedom of expression, freedom from oppressive government, freedom from the calculating suppressions of spineless, weak-kneed, and anatomy-deficient leaders. Think to the south of waistline, or the east and west of hip sockets. What a racket we run here with this farce about democracy. It only has relevance during elections, and let that be drummed into Guyanese heads, once and for all time. For afterwards, democracy is anything that leaders and their mentally challenged loyalists say that it is. Endlessly amusing, all this is. Then, there was that lovely development with Slovenian Pogocar winning back-to-back Tour de France titles. Slovenian conjures a close phonetic adverb that I push the envelope to mention. No offense intended. The guy is only 22 years old and visions of another Eddie Merckx or Miguel Indurain surface. What
caught my eye, brought chuckles was his lovelier nickname: ‘Baby Cannibal.’ I think SN (July 19) took a big risk with that label. The real headhunters are not going to be pleased; and if I were a budding rapper, I couldn’t think of a better handle. It has certain air about it – menace, too. How I long for the amusement of those gaudy nicknames: Baby Assassin, Ghadaffy, Guevara, and Brown Bomber. If I continue with these lighthearted amusements, the pc people (Integrity Commission, Broadcast Authority, and AG) may want to put me away. Like J. Robert Oppenheimer of atomic bomb fame, I destroy neat political worlds. What is definitely not amusing was that residents around that “horrific East Bank crash” refrained from saying anything to the press (SN July 19 again). It was a fatal accident, folks. These are laudable goals, but given the other constraints to development on the island of Wakenaam due to poor river transportation and berthing facilities, as well as inadequate drainage and irrigation for their farmlands, these pronouncements by the minister could pertinently be considered as just pipe dreams. Exxon pinches every penny where Guyana’s oil is concerned.
Here it is now coming to light that the pipeline for the gas-to-shore project is too narrow. Meaning, that for deep-water operations, it is unusually small, and the underwater pressures could lead to trouble. Exxon could be cutting a corner, and we Guyanese will be left with a disaster, should there be a rupture, for generations to come. Dreams about oil prosperity could go up in flames, and Guyanese will get burned badly. Is this what the Government is heaping upon the heads of our future and children?

A CHANGE OF FORTUNE He had come to the United States on a visitor’s visa. But he could never explain just how he managed to convince the consular officer that he was not planning to stay on. Onto this day, he feels that it was divine intervention. The gods had smiled on him and softened the heart of the interviewing officer. This was the only way he could explain the non-immigrant visa that he had been granted. When he entered the embassy on that fateful morning, he did not believe that he had any chance of obtaining a visitor’s visa. He was simply trying his luck. He was playing a game of chance. He felt that he at least needed to try so as to escape the misery that his life had become. He saw no future in Guyana. In those days, there were lines everywhere. If you wanted anything, you needed connections. He had none. He came from a family without prestige or reputation. He was not well off. He held no fancy title, and his education was limited. But he had some skills. His hands had always allowed him to provide for himself and buy enough rum to drunk himself on weekends. It was a life of nothingness. He wanted to escape. He took a chance one day and applied for a visa. He was called for an interview, but he did not expect a visa. He turned up early for the interview. Many others like
him had the same idea. And so he found himself at the back of a long line. He had dressed in his best clothes, but looking at the attire of the others in the line that morning, he felt as if he wore rags. But his friend had advised him, “Dress your best and you have a chance.” He had bought a new pair of shoes for the interview. He was sorry now. They were tight. His feet felt sore. Every step aggravated the situation. He tried to drag his feet as he stepped forward in the line. After what seemed like an eternity, his turn came. His palms were damp and beads of perspiration formed on his forehead. He forgot some of the answers he had rehearsed. The questions flew at him. After a while, he just said the first thing that came to his mind. He was in a daze and just wanted to get home. He was asked to return. He asked why. “For your visa!” answered the interviewing officer. He almost dropped dead. He was still in a daze when he left the embassy. The next thing he knew was that he was wandering a r o u n d t h e c i t y, s t i l l co n f u s ed th at h e h ad succeeded. Just then, the sun emerged from behind a cloud. He knew it! This was a sign! The gods had ordained a new future for him. His life was not in his hands. Destiny had taken its course. There was great rejoicing when he went home with his immigrant visa. It was a
great joy. The celebrations began. The neighbours thought he had won the l o t t e r y. H e h a d w o n something greater – a rare chance to start his life anew. The elation lasted throughout the journey to his new home. He was greeted by his relatives in the United States like a conquering hero with everyone reminding him how lucky he was to be in the land of opportunity. When he was asked where he would like to go he quickly said the Statue of L i b e r t y. H i s r e l a t i v e s quickly changed the conversation. Few of them had ever gone there and most of them considered it a waste of precious money to take him somewhere they themselves had never gone. It took him four months to land a job and then another four years before he could rent an apartment on his own. Four more years before he met a partner and another four years before he married. It was a quiet thing. Not like back home where he would have been unable to do such things without a fete. The life he dreamed of was slipping away. He now had responsibilities. Then he lost his job, then his home and later his family. He was starting over again. Many times he thought of returning home. But the shame was too much. To go back without anything to show would be a harsher truth to face than his present predicament. He preferred to pine away. He stayed away from social events. He became reclusive.

One day just by chance he was passing a park when a little boy ran out onto the road onto the path of an approaching vehicle. He managed to pluck the boy away from the approaching vehicle. He did not know how he did it. He again felt that the gods had come to his aid. The child’s parents were grateful. They did not stop thanking him. He felt like a real-life hero and was so warmed by their affections that he felt he had won new friends. He asked them about themselves.
As it turned out, they were rich, very rich. They owned a business and employed hundreds of persons. He mentioned that he was down on his luck and had been out of work for some time. The child’s father gave him a card and told him to see him the next day. As the father left the park, he added, “Come prepared to work!” He thought to himself that this was another turning point in his life. Lady Luck had smiled on him. The next day he turned up dressed in jacket and tie and his best
trousers, ready to climb the corporate ladder. He felt that having saved the boss’s son’s life, he would be given a senior position. He was given a spade and told that henceforth he would be responsible for shoveling snow. He took the job. Lone local company among those bidding to audit Guyana’s oil take

clisar Financial and Professional Ser vices, which provides accounting assistance and financial advice for Guyanese businesses, was the only local bidder among five companies that have expressed interest in providing consulting services for cost recovery audit and validation of the Government’s profit oil share from their contract with ExxonMobil, for the period 2018 to 2020. The company, which was established back in 2012, is presently being managed by its founder and Managing Director, Azzar Haniff, a chartered and forensic accountant. The Government previously had committed to outsourcing the country’s oil revenue, saying that all the costs being claimed by ExxonMobil and its Stabroek block partners would have to be audited. Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, during a press conference last year noted that the audit is essential, as it is one of the things that can affect Guyana’s share of the revenue. The cost audit will require
the provision of on-the-job training for the employees of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) and the Natural Resources Ministry and agencies as directed by the Government. Boelle appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan. She denied the charges, which al-

Man shot in leg during home invasion Ministry of Health announces 1 additional

ollowing a home in vasion and robbery that occurred on Monday afternoon, a 48year- old man is now nursing a bullet wound to his leg. According to a police report, the victim’s 44-year-old wife was on the verandah of their Recht-Door-Zee, West Bank Demerara (WBD) home along with her mother, when at 14:30hrs, she observed two suspects jumping the western gate to enter the yard. The two suspects, one of whom was armed with a knife
and the other with a gun, then ran up to her and held her at gunpoint, before relieving her of $200,000 cash and jewellery, along with a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone valued at $55,000. The jewellery comprised of one pair gold-studded earrings, one gold wedding band and one diamond and silver
ring; all with values unknown. The suspect, who was armed with the knife, kept an eye on the woman while the other went into the
house where he saw her husband in his bedroom and began to demand money. During that time the suspect was interacting with the victim, a round was discharged in the victim’s direction, hitting him on his left leg. The suspects then escaped with the articles via a waiting vehicle. The victim was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Smiling thief gets one year A man, who smiled while posing for his mug shot, was yesterday sentenced to one year behind bars after he pleaded guilty to larceny and breaking and entering. The defendant, Romano Hamblin, of Cedar Street, McKenzie, Linden, Region Ten, appeared at the Linden Magistrate Court before Magistrate, Wanda Fortune. It was alleged that on Friday July 17, 2021, he broke into the home of Angelina Yearwood, located at Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, and stole valuable items. Hamblin was reportedly arrested the same day by police, and had admitted to being the perpetrator of the crime. While being processed for court he smiled and reportedly made jokes as his mug shot was being taken.

COVID-19 death, 62 new cases
The Ministry of Health in its COVID Update on July 20 reported that an 82-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) has succumbed to the virus. This brings to a total 37 deaths recorded for the month of July and 514 persons in total have passed away from March 2020 to date. A total of 1,933 tests were conducted and 62 infections were recorded over a 24-hour period. In total, Guyana has recorded 21,668 cases since March last year.The newly infected cases were recorded from Region Two (1 case), Region Three (7 cases), Region Four (28 cases), Region Five (4 cases), Region Six (18 cases) and Region 10 (4 cases). There are presently 12 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 97 people are in institutional isolation; 1,052 in home isolation and two people are in institutional quarantine.A total of 19,993 persons who were infected with COVID-19, have recovered.
Armed bandits rob pensioner A 63-year-old pensioner was robbed on Tuesday by four armed men at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown. The victim was robbed of $4,500 cash, one white Samsung tablet valued $45,000, one Blu cellular phone valued $25,000, and a quantity of documents. According to police reports, the victim was heading home in the vicinity of Freeman Street, East La Penitence, at 06:10hrs, when he was attacked by the perpetrators, who rode
up on two blue motorcycles. Both pillion riders dismounted their respective motorcycles and held the victim at gunpoint, but he resisted. One of the perpetrators dealt him a lash with a gun to his face, causing the victim to received minor injuries, and discharged a shot in the air. The other pillion rider then relieved the victim of the articles and mounted their respective motorcycles and escaped. Investigations are ongoing.

God Almighty has reminded us in the final revelation to mankind, this glorious Quran; “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favours upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your way of life.” (Holy Quran - Chapter 5 Verse 3) All gratitude is due to Allah (SWT), Lord of all creation, peace and blessings on the Prophets and the final Prophet to mankind (SAW), his family and companions. I extend Eid Mubarak greetings on behalf of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana and pray that Allah, the Almighty, accept all our sacrifices and good deeds. Eid-ulAdha is the commemoration of one of the most celebrated Prophet and his family in history. Our father, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) or Abraham. He is known as the common patriarch or what is referred to as the Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The day of Eidul-Adha, is the commemoration of the sacrifices of our father Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and his family. This
struggle at its core revolves around his absolute and pure devotion to Allah (SWT), God Almighty. Him and his family’s willingness to sacrifice his prized possession and that, which he loved most, his son Ishmael, fulfilling the commandment of his Lord. Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is described as the forefather of all the Prophets who came after him, including Moses, Jesus, and our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is accorded the highest status in the Holy Quran and is described in Chapter 16: verse 120, as an “Ummah,” a nation. Imagine a single person referred to as an Ummah. This is partly because the amount of good, his exemplary submission to Allah (SWT), and his sincerity in his worship, all embodied to the degree of an entire Ummah, a nation. He was given the title of Khaleellullah, or friend of Allah. His submission to the Lord is confirmed in the Quran, “When his Lord said to him ‘Submit,’ he said ‘I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds.” (Holy Quran Chapter 2: Verse 131) Now that Eid-ul-Adha is upon us,
how should we commemorate this day? Eid-ul-Adha is a season of reflection, happiness, family bonding, and bridging the gap between the rich and poor, as well as nurturing mutual compassion for all of humanity. Eid is also an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity despite we are experiencing another year of not being able to observe the Hajj. The Muslim Ummah and the world continue to experience crises and face challenges. We are in a period of a great test, which should motivate us to reflect on the blessings of the Lord, which we take for granted. We must not become complacent during this pandemic, many have lost their loved ones due to Covid-19, and therefore we must give abundant thanks. Let us use this opportunity as an impetus, which drives us to be more compassionate to all of humanity. Abraham was rewarded for his obedience and willingness. His experience reminds us of the sacrifice of selfish desires for the common good, and of God’s mercy and benefits when we obey His command. This is, thinking of others, and placing our trust and faith in the Most High. The lesson of Abraham is
that Allah will never ask mankind for more than we can give and sacrifice and He will also never leave or forsake the obedient. It is the mercy of Allah that continues to keep Guyanese, every day in these trying times, as we are presently being called to sacrifice of ourselves for our brothers and sisters, as Abraham was prepared to do with Ibrahim to prove his love and obedience to God. And on this and every day may Allah continue to shine His blessings on every Guyanese.

That is how many burpees a Brazilian man living in Singapore completed in an hour, setting a new Guinness World Record in a fundraising effort for his niece who was born last year with severe heart disease. Last month’s record-setting endeavour by Cassiano Rodrigues Laureano, who turned 35 on the day of the attempt, was verified by Guinness Record adjudicators on Monday. “I’m tired”, said Laureano after completing the record at the city’s Tricolor Fight Team gym, where he teaches. “It didn’t go as smoothly as I thought it would go.” “But I’m very, very happy with the accomplishment.” Born in Sao Gabriel municipality in southern Brazil, Laureano, who is also a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, said he was driven by a promise made to his niece, Rebeca.
“I don’t know when I’ll get to see them,” said Laureano, of his family he hasn’t met since moving to Singapore in May 2019. “So it’s the only thing that I can do to help ... using my athleticism.” Laureano had originally aimed for 1,000 burpees, but fell short of his target due to a leg injury sustained two days before the attempt. Mexico will play its quarterfinal on July 24 in Glendale, Arizona, against the second-place team from Group D: Honduras, Panama or invited guest Qatar. El Salvador will play the Group D winner.
