Iran’s conservatives take aim at nuclear deal
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is also Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, center, shakes hands with an official upon arrival at the Mehrabad airport in Tehran, Iran, Wednesday. (AP Photo/Ebrahim Noroozi) DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran’s security hawks have begun sniping at their country’s historic nuclear deal, emboldened a day after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described some of the world powers that signed it as “untrustworthy”. Khamenei’s remark will be understood by Iranians to refer largely to the United States and Britain, the “Great and Little Satans” long reviled by Iran’s revolutionary theocracy for their support of the Shah, overthrown in 1979. The comment carries weight, because the conservative cleric is the ultimate arbiter of high state policy under Iran’s unwieldy dual system of clerical and republican rule. Khamenei did voice
guarded appreciation of the deal, saying it was significant, and urged calm, perhaps alluding to surging popular hopes for an end to Iran’s isolation, or to strains between the supporters of the deal and its critics. But his downbeat, measured tone was in contrast to lavish praise for the agreement from pragmatic President Hassan Rouhani and his Western-educated foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif. Figures close to Khamenei lost little time in taking aim at the accord, which lifts sanctions on Tehran in return for Iran accepting long-term curbs on a nuclear program that the West has suspected was aimed at creating a nuclear bomb.
One saw worrying discrepancies between the U.S. and Iranian interpretations of what had been agreed. “The Iranian fact-sheet of the conclusion of the deal issued by the foreign ministry had significant differences with what America’s president mentioned in his remarks,” Mohammad Kazem Anbarlui wrote in an editorial for the conservative newspaper Resalat.” The fact-sheet of the rival shows that Iranian red lines, particularly about the lifting of sanctions, have not been observed. The phrases and words used in the text contain parentheses and it is loaded with interpretable, ambiguous or multi-meaning expressions,” he added.
Reuters - Europe moved to re-open funding to Greece’s stricken economy yesterday after the parliament in Athens approved a new bailout programme in a fractious vote that left the government without a majority. The European Central Bank increased emergency funding for Greek lenders, although capital controls will have to remain in place to avoid a run on the banks when they reopen on Monday. European Union finance ministers also approved 7 billion euros (5 billion pounds) in bridge loans to keep Greece afloat, allowing it to make a bond payment to the ECB next Monday and clear its arrears with the International Monetary Fund. The loans will be finalised today provided Germany’s parliament approves a Berlin government request to open talks on a three-year bailout programme - Greece’s third in
the past five years - worth up to 86 billion euros. A majority of Germany’s conservative lawmakers voted in favour of starting talks on a third Greek bailout in a test ballot yesterday, the eve of a vote in the Bundestag lower house of parliament, sources in the conservative parliamentary faction said. In the test ballot, 48 lawmakers in the conservative bloc opposed talks on further Greek aid while three abstained, the sources said. The conservative bloc, composed of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian allies, the Christian Social Union (CSU), has more than 300 seats in parliament but it was not clear how many conservative lawmakers were at the test vote. The Bundestag is expected to give Merkel’s government a mandate to
open negotiations, with the Social Democrats - her junior coalition partner - and some opposition parties expected to vote ‘Yes’. The twin lifelines were a reward for Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after he won the backing of parliament in the early hours of Thursday for the tough reform measures demanded by creditors led by Germany. Tsipras was left weakened by a revolt in his left-wing Syriza party, who voted against the measures, forcing him to rely on opposition votes to pass the package. He is expected to reshuffle his cabinet to replace four ministers and deputy ministers who rebelled. The 40 year-old prime minister told aides the rebels had created an “open trauma” in the party but that he was committed to sticking to the deal, a government official said.

China says Japan, China preparing for ‘high-level’ talks
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, center, claps hands during a plenary session at the lower house in Tokyo, yesterday. (AP Photo/Shuji Kajiyama) BEIJING (Reuters) China is preparing for “highlevel political dialogue” with Japan, China’s top diplomat told the head of Japan’s National Security Council yesterday, fuelling speculation of a leaders’
summit as early as September. Sino-Japanese ties, long bedeviled by China’s memories of Japan’s wartime aggression and disputed islands in the East China Sea, have improved since Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe
met Chinese President Xi Jinping at an Asia-Pacific summit in Beijing in November. The two met for a second mini-summit in April at an Asia-Africa leaders’ gathering in Jakarta and Japan wants to
keep the thaw on track, while ensuring China realizes the risks of an increasingly assertive maritime military policy. “China attaches great importance to your trip and is preparing for high-level political dialogue between the two countries,” State Councillor Yang Jiechi, who outranks the foreign minister, told visiting Japanese National Security Council head Shotaro Yachi, according to a pool report. Yachi, who is a close ally of Abe’s, told Yang the bilateral relationship was improving and their meeting would be an important channel. Over the weekend, Chinese state media quoted China’s Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping as saying Xi had already invited Abe to attend events to mark the end of the World War Two. Japanese government sources have said another XiAbe meeting could well take place this year, although some said China probably first wants to see a planned statement by Abe marking the 70th anniversary of the end of
the war. Abe’s critics worry he wants to dilute past government apologies for Japan’s wartime behavior, though he has said he will uphold them. But Yang also criticized Abe for pushing through legislation in the lower house of parliament on Thursday, that could see troops sent to fight abroad for the first time since World War Two. Yang told Yachi that Japan’s security bills “would fuel doubts and questions among neighboring countries and the international community” over whether Japan was abandoning its
defensive defense policy, according to a statement on China’s foreign ministry website. China is keeping a wary eye on Abe’s push for a more muscular defense policy that would ease the pacifist constitution’s constraints on military activity abroad. Despite those worries, high-level dialogue has already resumed, including Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso’s recent meeting with his Chinese counterpart. A successful summit with Xi could bolster Abe’s support at home, which has sagged over doubts about his security policy.
Obama to meet with Saudi foreign minister at White House Friday: WSJ WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will meet with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir at the White House today in his first meeting with a key ally following the Iran nuclear deal, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday, citing an unnamed White House official. In the first public comments on the Iran agreement by a senior Saudi official, al-Jubeir did not explicitly endorse or reject the deal at a meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry today. He stressed the need for inspections to verify Iran is complying and the “snapback” of sanctions if it is found to be cheating.

WHO WALKS LATE AT NIGHTS? There used to be a time when generally there were only two types of persons who would be seen walking the road during the wee hours of the morning. The two types were those from the oldest profession in the world and those who were out to break- and- enter the homes of others. Much later, a third category of strollers emerged during the wee hours of the mornings. When questioned by the police as to why they were on the road that late - or rather that early - they would contend that they were by their girlfriends and were now going home. This was when the rot stepped in. A lot of them were indeed going home after visiting their girlfriends. But what sort of parents would allow a young man to be courting their daughter and leaving the girl’s home in the wee hours of the morning. This represented a total breakdown of societal norms governing these matters. Back in the day if you were courting a girl, you were expected to be out of the girl’s home by nine o clock latest, and that if you were lucky. If by that time you had not left, the female elder of the home would begin to close the windows, thereby signaling to the suitor that it was time to leave.
These days if this happens, it signals another thing. The suitor feels that the parents are now going to sleep and therefore he has to just wait a little longer before he begins his own private rituals with the girlfriend. These modern days if you find somebody on the road at 4.00 am, you are likely to find them in female company. If asked why he was out so late, he would be shocked by your question. He would say that he was out having a good time with his girlfriend. Parents complain how difficult it is to find decent boys these days. Young girls always ask me if I have any grandsons that are available, since good boys are hard to come by. Well how are good boys going to emerge when parents are allowing them to stay long hours talking to their daughters? I would love to see the young man who is going to take any of my granddaughters out and not have her back home by midnight. But even before he has the opportunity to date her, he has to come home and introduce himself to the family. These days, boys and girls are sneaking out on dates - or rather escapades without the knowledge of their parents. What therefore we have is a total breakdown
Guyana will receive financial and technical support for the development of its protected areas system from the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS). This was confirmed Tuesday when Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Christof Schenck, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the boardroom of the Minister’s Brickdam Office. As part of the agreement, FZS is providing the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) with the services of two experts; Dr. Anoushka Kinahan and Thadaigh Baggallay, who have been in Guyana for the past year. They are tasked with advising the PAC on setting up the Guyana conservation area system, lending support to establish administrative and monitoring systems for the Kanuku Mountains, the crafting of monitoring plans and biodiversity surveys, and liaising with representatives of other interest groups such as indigenous communities, Conservation International and regional planning authorities. Additional support in the form of financing will be made
available once development of the country’s management plans and strategies are completed. Minister Trotman said that the Government welcomes this support which is critical for the advancement of the country’s protected areas system. He said that, “we are now awakened to the fact that our biodiversity is precious and we need to preserve it. Thankfully, we have not lost much of what we have and your intervention and presence bodes well for us.” FZS is an independent, international conservation organisation based in Germany. It is committed to preserving wild lands and biological diversity in the last remaining wilderness areas on the planet. This organisation is active in biodiversity-rich areas in central and Eastern Europe, east Africa, central South America and south-east Asia.

of the traditions of courting. No wonder so many persons are out in the streets into the wee hours of the morning. The police, who have a limited number of ranks on duty in the evening, not only have to contend with fights, bad behaviour and accidents, they have to also be on the lookout for criminals. All these responsibilities entrusted to those manning the night shift means that the police are stretched thin. This is what many people do not understand and why they are opposed to the cut-off time for pubs and bars.
The 2.00 a.m. cut-off for the sale of alcohol and alcoholic beverages, and the turning off the music at bars and pubs are working effectively. Those involved are complying with the law. This is how it should be. People have a right to express their opinions. Often these opinions are based on selfinterest. Those who do brisk business selling after 2.00 a.m. will obviously feel that to close operations at that time will be adverse to their interests. Others will oppose the measure because they are
averse to change. People do not always accept change well. They prefer things as they are and therefore resist having to make changes as innocuous as they may seem. Then there are those who have an ideological objection to the issue. For them it is not the time that the bars and clubs have to close or to tone down their levels of the music. For them it is the fact that the State has the right to determine when people should stop partying. Those who toe this line claim that people, not governments, should decide.
Freedom, however, always comes with limitations. A person may be free, but not free to do as he or she wants. The majority of the Guyanese people recognize this fact. This accounts for the support that the recently introduced measure enjoys. And do not forget, if a suitor comes knocking at your door asking for your granddaughter, ask him what are his intentions. If he comes back, he may be a good boy!

== THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN ==
Time to honour Hoyte, Rodney, Grant At the University of Toronto, when I started out there, the white students were crazy about “Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant. At that time, Guyanese Eddy Grant was an international superstar. His hit, “Gimme Hope Jo’anna” was featured at the inauguration of President David Granger. Grant was an invited guest at the ceremony. Is this the beginning of the long awaited national recognition of Eddy Grant? It is pathetic and absurd that there isn’t a symbol anywhere in Guyana to remind Guyanese that in the seventies it produced a pop star with superstar standing in the world. I have no objection to a street being named after Shivnarine Chanderpaul, but why not Eddy Grant? If you ask any teenager in the UK who are the Beatles; any youth in the US who is Elvis Presley; any boy or girl in Jamaica who is Bob Marley, they know. They know not because their parents tell them, but because every year there is some ceremony about these people that is carried in the press and on social
media. In Jamaica, there is a Bob Marley museum that President Obama visited last April. Every Jamaican knows about Bob Marley because symbols of Bob Marley are in their face every day, everywhere in the island. Barbados has named a street after Rihanna. The good, wonderful, optimistic thing for me about the Granger presidency is that we have a trained historian who is in charge of Guyana. First it was Jagan, a dentist; then Burnham a lawyer; then Hoyte, another lawyer; there was Janet Jagan, a nurse; Sam Hinds, an engineer; Jagdeo, an economist, sort of; and Ramotar, an economist, sort of. All these names were presidents of Guyana. We now have a historian. He will know how important it is to install symbols of individual greatness in a country where greatness is needed, and how valuable it is to instill a sense of awareness of who contributed to Guyana’s modern existence. President Granger has signaled his intention to emphasise the importance of history when he named the
International Convention Centre after a man who was Guyana’s first president, Arthur Chung. It is obvious that he will continue in this direction. I propose for his immediate attention, three names. But it should not be an initiative that must come exclusively from President Granger. It must come from the Government of Guyana that has the resources needed to preserve the legacies of these three eminent Guyanese. Eddy Grant has already been mentioned. There is Desmond Hoyte. Hoyte is a paradox in post-colonial politics. Even in democratic India, Indira Gandhi fell to the temptation of authoritarian power. Hoyte did not. He was the embodiment of postcolonial democracy. Hoyte witnessed the desecration of democratic values under Jagan’s premiership and Burnham’s republicanism and it jagged his middle class sense of right and wrong. When he became President, his intention was to effect the democratic separation of power and to
give each citizen the justice that belonged to them. Some of his pathways were iconoclastically refreshing. He confronted his army chief and one of his Vice-Presidents over nasty violations. He was not afraid to install perestroika and glasnost in his country, long strangulated by strong man politics, even if those twin policies weakened the fulcrum on which his power rested. A perfect example was his permission to his rabid middle-class critics to start a newspaper, the Stabroek News. It would not be inaccurate to say that the Stabroek News became a sort of nemesis of President Hoyte. Guyana missed a glorious moment to make a fantastic leap into the modern, civilized,
free world when Desmond Hoyte lost the 1992 elections. The sun went out of the skies and the night was covered with permanent darkness for the next twenty-three years. This country needs to honour this fantastic man in a very big way. Finally, there is the indomitable Walter Rodney. He remains the iconic figure for so many Guyanese. I don’t think it needs any debate that he was the most brilliant and philosophically astute political activist in the entire English-speaking Caribbean. I would put Frantz Fanon in the same category. CLR James was not a political activist. Rodney and Hoyte died too soon. They went away from life too soon. And Guyana has paid tragically for
their untimely demise. Could we see them again in the foreseeable future? These were two great personalities par excellence. They were phenomenally brave and brilliantly transformative. This country needs its young population to understand that they paved the way for the little liberties we now enjoy. They were modern liberators of this nation.
A couple, who just cannot seem to get along, found themselves before a Magistrate after they had a confrontation. Akeem Thom, 23, a mini bus conductor, of Lot 248 Pike Street, Kitty, was placed before the court for assaulting Shanice Thomas, the mother of his child. It is alleged that on July 10, at Lot 73 Campbellville he assaulted Thomas, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. The defendant denied the allegation before Magistrate
Ann Mc Lennan. In relating the facts, Police Corporal, Deniro Jones told the court that on the day in question, the defendant approached T h o m a s a n d d e a l t her several cuffs to the left temple and one to the mouth. However, Attorney Paul Fung-a- Fat argued that his client is not too well in his head and had suffered head injuries years ago. Thom was released on $15,000 bail and was asked to keep the peace.

Govt reviewing “fiscally unsustainable” $10,000 cash grant The continuance of the $10,000 cash grant that was offered to each public school child by the previous administration last year will be dependent on the outcome of a review being undertaken by Government. This development was confirmed by Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, at the weekly postCabinet press briefing convened at the Ministry of the Presidency on Wednesday. Trotman disclosed that while the decision to introduce the grant was a laudable idea it was badly implemented. He also noted that the review was premised on the
fact that Cabinet was advised that it is a fiscally unsustainable endeavour. “When one studies developmental economics, when you give a grant or cash transfer it must be accompanied or guided by a means test,” Trotman explained. A means test is a determination of whether an individual or family is eligible for government assistance, based upon whether the individual or family possesses the means to do without that help. Moreover, Trotman underscored that the purpose of the review is to ensure that the most vulnerable in society are the sole or primary
beneficiaries of the grant. “So to have a grant of $10,000 to every school child without it being focused to those who need it more is not fiscally sustainable for any economy, and particularly ours,” the Governance Minister noted. As such he asserted “we want to review it to ensure that, for example, a child who would have previously received $10,000 but is living in abject poverty would now in fact receive $100,000 whereas a child...going to a private school would not receive a $10,000 (grant) because it would be depriving a child who really needs it.” Trotman therefore informed that the grant for
Police are on the hunt for a ‘nervous’ bandit who accidentally shot his own partner during a robbery at M. Ali and Sons Supermarket at Main Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Reports are that the bandit wounded his accomplice at around 19.00 hrs yesterday while trying to shoot a female employee who had entered the store while the heist was in progress. But the shooter and his wounded partner managed to escape in a car with some $500,000, a firearm and several phone cards. Police were said to be tracking the men at press time.
A son of the victims told Kaieteur News that his mother, Nazmoon Ali, and his 14-year-old daughter, were at the back of the store, when two men, who had a firearm, entered and held them at gunpoint. Several other female workers were in the store at the time. They relieved the women of money, phone cards and took a licenced firearm. However, while the robbery was still in progress, another female employee entered the store and saw the men. On seeing the employee, one of the robbers attempted to shoot the woman, but shot his accomplice instead.
Despite being hit, the wounded man managed to escape to a waiting car with his partner. Police have reportedly identified the vehicle and were said to be on the men’s trail. The owners of M. Ali and Sons also operate a filling station, and bandits have targeted the family several times. Last August, businessman Mohamed Ali was robbed at gunpoint of $2.5M that he was about to deposit in a New Amsterdam bank. The robber was caught after diving into a swamp to elude police and publicspirited citizens.
From page 3 gunmen who killed Ramlall. He said he was aided by another taxi driver, who he identified as Lennox Roberts, called 'Soldier Man.' Bacchus reportedly told police that on the night of the attack on Ramlall, he was at a city night club, but was in constant telephone contact with 'Soldier Man', who was at the barbeque at Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, which businessman Ramlall had also attended. He said that 'Soldier Man' kept him informed via telephone about Ramlall's movements. Bacchus said that he was instructed to pick up some men, one from “Buddys” and the two others at Agricola. He took the men to La Jalousie where he dropped them off near Ramlall's home. He then went to Cornelia Ida where he picked up 'Soldier Man', from a barbeque, while Ramlall was still there. They then headed back to La Jalousie where their accomplices were waiting. The bandits concealed themselves in a bushy empty lot next to Ramlall's home, while they waited for him to
arrive. The men had reportedly walked with lengths of rope to bind their victim. One resident claimed that he saw four men making their way towards Ramlall's house with the aid of a flashlight, but did not take it for anything serious. Ramlall eventually arrived, left his vehicle outside, entered the bottom flat, spoke to his wife, and then went back outside to use an outdoor washroom. When he came outside, the men attacked him, and riddled him with bullets when he raised an alarm and fought back. They then fled with some of his jewellery. The taxi driver said he heard the gunshots and the bandits breathlessly jumped into his car and ordered him to drive. He said he drove along the rough La Jalousie 'line top' and emerged at Crane Public Road. He then headed back over the Demerara Harbour Bridge, where he dropped off the killers, two in Agricola and another at Diamond, before returning with 'Soldier Man' to the West Coast Demerara barbeque venue. Bacchus said he dropped off 'Soldier Man' and he went home.
The two were arrested the day after police raided a house at Craig and killed the gang's ringleader; Rolston Morrison called 'Saddam', wounded a gang member, Warren McKenzie, and arrested seven others. Bacchus and Roberts confessed that the attack on Regent Multiplex owner, Ganesh Ramlall, called Boyo, was hatched two months ago. While they have not provided investigators with the names of the bandits they transported, they gave some details of the plan to attack Ramlall. “After they came up with the plan, they had to get people to execute it. So they contacted Saddam (Rolston Morrison) who was killed on Tuesday and his crew,” a police source told this newspaper. The plan was not to kill but to rob and if they did not get enough money from Ramlall, they were to kidnap him and demand a hefty ransom. “They were to tie him up in the house and relieve him of everything,” the source said. Police have since secured permission to keep all the suspects in custody after the mandatory 72 hours expired. Charges are definitely likely by early next week.

now has been stopped in light of the fact that economic standards would not allow for it to be continued in the manner that it was done under the previous administration. He however assured that Government is prepared to continue the $1,500 uniform voucher to public school children. The cash grant, which was introduced for the first time last year by the People’s
Progressive Party/Civic government, was afforded to children attending nursery, primary and secondary level schools across the country. It was said to be an initiative being undertaken because of Government’s interest in the education of children and was thus labelled the “Because We Care Cash Grant.” On Wednesday, too, Trotman announced that
Government has approved a contract for the supply of exercise books for schoolchildren countrywide. The contract sum, to the tune of $63,341,598 has been awarded to the Guyana National Printers Limited. And according to the Minister, “this is a demonstration of Government’s continuing interest in the proper and orderly education of our children.”

Magistrate recuses self from $120M fraud case A magistrate has recused himself from hearing a case against a Bartica man accused of misappropriating $120M from a prominent city business. Magistrate Dylon Bess made the announcement last Friday when the case came before him at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. Facing five charges of fraud is Eon Ferrier, a businessman of Bartica. Ferrier had appeared in the Georgetown Courts before City Magistrate Ann
McLennan on July 1, where he was denied bail for swindling Nazar Mohamed, proprietor of Mohamed’s Enterprise on Lombard Street, of $120M. According to details of the charge, Ferrier, between June 22 and June 23 at Bartica, was entrusted with the money to purchase gold for Mohamed’s Enterprise, a company involved in gold trading. Instead, Ferrier is alleged to have converted the money to his own use and benefit. The matter had been transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. Attorney-at-law Latchmie Rahamat, prosecuting the matter by means of fiat from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), had told the city court that the accused had been accused of doing something similar to another businessman. She had called for bail to be denied, arguing that Ferrier is a flight risk. However, Ferrier’s attorney, Patrice Henry had requested that his client be granted bail. He insisted that his client posed no flight risk and the prosecution has no evidence to prove that the money was given to his client. On July 10 when the
matter was called at Bartica, Magistrate Bess announced that he was sending the matter back to the Chief Magistrate and he would no longer be handling the matter. The matter was reassigned to Essequibo magistrate, Sunil Scarce, who will preside over the case at the Bartica court. Ferrier had been on remand in the Camp Street jail but had gone up for the case in Bartica, an area where he resides. He was admitted to the hospital in Bartica where doctors determined he was suffering from infections and mouth ulcers.

GO-Invest will be sole investment agency in Guyana - CEO - in talks with Govt. on development of new investment model As the new administration works out just how it will deal with the government agency GO-Invest, it appears that the body will be the only one to deal with the country’s investments. This is according to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GO-Invest, Keith Burrowes, who made the announcement during a meeting with members of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) on Monday. During a round of questioning with the media, Burrowes indicated that he had met with new Minister of Business and Investment, Dominic Gaskin. During the meeting, he said, Gaskin had shared the Government’s expectations of GO-Invest. He said too that there are changes that are already being planned. One of these changes, Burrowes said, was making GO-Invest the sole investment agency in Guyana. “One of those changes is that GO-Invest is expected to become the only organisation or agency dealing with investment,” Burrowes said. He added that Minister Gaskin will expand upon this new initiative. “The last discussion I’ve had with Minister [Gaskin], he had indicated that it should be before the third quarter,” he added. Burrowes further said that, if the decision is formalized, it would place a lot of pressure on GO-Invest. However, he said, he has no problem with any such arrangement. According to Burrowes, the agency is already undergoing “revamping”. This revamping had been ongoing even before the new Government had been instituted, he clarified. Meanwhile, Burrowes indicated that GO-Invest is looking at several models of investment to implement in the agency. He said that discussions will eventually take place with the PSC before any such model is adopted. He emphasised that the model will be different from others which currently exist and will be created with Guyana’s specific needs in mind. He further outlined specific areas which will be under review as GO-Invest moves forward with a new investment model. “The two main areas that we will be focusing a lot on is our monitoring of these concessions that are usually given to private sector entities. We are going to be monitoring them on an
CEO of GO-Invest, Keith Burrowes ongoing basis to ensure that the concessions are used for the reason that it was established for,” he explained. The other area, he continued, would be the establishment of a partnership between the public and private sectors. “We’re hoping that even in terms of the investors coming in, that’s something we’ll want to look at to see if we can have not only the concessions given to the investors, but have a more long-term public/private partnership,” Burrowes said. He emphasised that once all of the proposals are formally approved by the Government they will be made public. Meanwhile, Burrowes also indicated that the establishment of a database which would capture all of the investments coming into Guyana, regardless of which agency it was tied to, had also been put forward to Minister Gaskin. Further, he said, while this proposal had been previously approved it was never implemented. He said that once the decision approval comes from Gaskin, this database can begin almost immediately. “My engagement with the current Minister has been extremely fruitful; I believe that the sector is in very good hands now,” Burrowes said. On previous occasions, Burrowes had indicated that GO-Invest only handled a limited number of the investments coming into Guyana. During Monday’s session, he once more reiterated this, and said that the investments which GOInvest had previously handled had not been the crucial areas of investment. With the new decision of GO-Invest being the sole investment agency, the body will have responsibility for sectors, such as the extractive industries, which had previously been handled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Stabroek, Kitty Market, Le Repentir to be transformed - Town Clerk By Jarryl Bryan Newly installed Town Clerk Royston King yesterday laid out his plans for transforming the ‘Garden City’ on the table, making known a broad range of policy changes he intends to pursue, with the help of stakeholders comprising religious bodies, the private sector and civil society. This was conveyed during a meeting in City Hall. “We have to deliver on our obligations, especially the call to deliver to citizens a city that is clean, healthy, efficient, economically viable and environmentally friendly.” King declared yesterday. He revealed the use of a two-pronged approach to accomplish these ends, focusing on internal integration - in an effort to get all the departments to work in tandem to return credibility to the workings of the council.
“We will do this by the retraining, retooling and reorganizing of our departments and staff.” King said, also expressing that with the current officer corps on board, the skills are there to get the job done. “Second, we need to look at external adaptation, i.e. putting the council in a position to respond to the external demands of our environment. We will do this through building strong partnerships with all stakeholders, including religious stakeholders, private sector organizations and civil society. We will work at City Hall to establish an unbeatable team” King expressed assurances that he would have continuous meetings with the media in a bid to keep the public informed about the progress the Town Clerk was having. King also referred to “architectural indiscipline’ throughout the city, which
- Religious bodies, civil society and private sector to be engaged had to be corrected. He gave as his main example the Stabroek Market wharf, which he called ‘unsafe’, as well as illegitimate vendors who would have to be relocated. He revealed that a meeting between City Hall and the Public Infrastructure Ministry is imminent, to address the conditions. “That is a priority to us, because we are a responsible council and our priority is the health and safety of all of our citizens in Georgetown and Guyana.” King also promised to enact measures for the Kitty Market, which he said would have to be dealt with in an urgent manner, on the premise of the many reports the council had gotten about its safety hazards. “I shudder to think what will happen if someone’s roof
collapses on someone in that vicinity.” He said. King also spoke of Le Repentir cemetery, stating that “the way we treat and honour our dead is a reflection of the way we value the ones we are living with.” He promised to return Le Repentir to a garden-like state. He also expressed that Religious and other bodies that have special grounds within the cemetery, including the Islamic fraternity and Christian bodies, will be expected to continue to play their part. He also spoke of those who buried their loved ones but never looked back, saying it is necessary for them to get involved in cleaning up the cemetery. King revealed that the audit department had already been set up within the Council, to manage and assess risks and flag design systems that could improve the efficiency of the Council. King also revealed plans to add Environment to the Public Health Market
Committee, members of which had paid a recent visit to the Stabroek Market Wharf. According to King, the vendors in question, whom he referred to as illegal tenants, would be relocated and the wharf rebuilt. King, who was confirmed by city Mayor Hamilton Green on Monday as Town Clerk after recommendations were approved by Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan, is filling the position vacated by former acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba. Sooba was sacked with the advent of the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) Government after the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C)’s loss at the May i1th National and Regional Elections saw her support fall by the wayside. Sooba had generated much controversy during her tenure as Town Clerk (acting), with repeated clashes with Mayor Green. Green had made it clear that ‘square pegs in round holes’ would not be tolerated, shortly before Sooba received her termination letter from Bulkan.
Town Clerk Royston King King had been recommended for the post of Town Clerk since 2011, after applying for the post but was unsuccessful. He was appointed again on July 24th 2012, but was blocked then, and again from May 6th, 2014. Sooba had been consistently defended by the past administration, who had claimed that qualifications were not the only consideration for the post. King is the former Public Relations Officer of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council and has a Masters Degree in Corporate Communications.

NGOs push for reintroduction of National Service
Attorney General Basil Williams during the meeting with the NGO officials. A seven-woman delegation comprising members of the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA), Help and Shelter, Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), Red Thread, Child Link and the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) has met with Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General Basil Williams. Issues were raised on key concerns regarding access to justice and functioning of the courts in the interior, implementation of the
Domestic Violence Act, juveniles and the court system (including enactment of the Juvenile Justice Bill), amendment of the Jury Act, activation of night courts, alternative sentencing, specialized courts for sexual offences, training for judiciary, magistracy and court officers, coroner’s inquest and the prevention of Discrimination Act 1997 on the grounds of sexual orientation. The delegation included Omattie Madray of Child Link, Karen DeSouza and Nicola Marcus of Red Thread,
Schemel Patrick of SASOD, Emily Dodson of GAWL, Danuta Radzik of Help and Shelter and Patricia Sheeratan-Bisnauth of the GRPA. According to the Ministry, during a “lively” discussion at the Minister’s office on Monday, concerns were raised regarding the responses to juvenile crime by De Souza. She recommended that the administration reintroduce National Service. She was a “product” of the programme, and has seen firsthand the benefits. This recommendation was
strongly backed by the other delegates. “The AG agreed with the strong recommendation coming from the group and said they sold him on National Service as an option to be explored in relation to juvenile crime. On another note, the Attorney General explained that every magistrate has the power to conduct inquests. This was in response to a question posed about whose responsibility it is for conducting inquests in violent and unnatural deaths.” The minister also pointed out that finance is needed for most of the recommendations made towards addressing challenges in the delivery of judicial services and the dispensation of justice. Some of the issues and recommendations also explored were the raising the age of criminal responsibility, extensive training for magistrates prior to and on ascension to the bench. There were also calls made for continuous training thereafter to curb the vexing issue of the culture of remand sentences for bailable offences, granting frequent adjournments for flimsy reasons (sometimes through
intimidation), inconsistent sentencing and greater use of alternative sentencing for first-time offenders. “In addition, it was also felt that probation officers should be placed in every court and all judicial officers in the justice system should be exposed to gendersensitive training. The exploration of more
magistrates to speed up the delivery of justice, activation of night courts, a specialized court for sexual offences, the operation of the family court, and the removal of the Linden magistracy from under the Demerara Magisterial district, since persons have to travel from Linden all the way to Vreed-En- Hoop to conduct judicial business.”

Commemoration Commission to organise 50th Independence celebrations A National Commemoration Commission will be set up by the government to oversee the organisation of next year’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations. This was revealed by Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, at the administration’s post-cabinet briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency. According to Minister Trotman, the Commission will not only be responsible for the upcoming Independence celebrations, but will also coordinate other national events. He noted that Mashramani coordination and planning will fall under the Commission; however he added that the 2016 festival will not be as prominent as previous years. “We will have
Mashramani celebrations, but I believe that it has already been announced that Mashramani will not be as showcased and highlighted, because we want to have more of an effort put into the May activities,” said the Minister. The Governance Minister added that the Commission is in the process of appointing its members and is yet to announce the location of its secretariat and the “vision of the committee”. The administration had previously come under criticism for its organisation of the ceremonial inauguration of President David Granger, which was blamed for the miles-long traffic build-up along the East Bank Demerara Public Road. Minister Trotman assured that such an incident would not be repeated as the
administration has more time to prepare for the May 26 commemoration. “Bearing in mind that the inauguration was just a few days after the swearing-in, and of course there would have been some hiccups. We have almost a year in advance to plan and we are doing so.” Moreover, Education Minister Dr Rupert Roopnarine, who also proposed the organising committee, will be in charge of the Commission along with the Minister within the Ministry, Nicolette Henry. In addition to the Education Ministry, the Commission will also be cooperating with various bodies in the field of culture and sport as well as other Ministries and organisations to ensure that it is a “multifaceted commission”.

Kuru Kuru fatal accident…
$250,000 bail for motorcyclist on causing death charge Travis Simeon, was yesterday slapped with a causing death charge, four months after he was involved in an accident that claimed the life of 15 year-old Dora Secondary School student, Richard Paramdeo. Yesterday, Simeon was once again arraigned, on this occasion before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court. Simeon, 24, a miner, of 292 Kuru Kuru Soesdyke/Linden Highway is accused of riding motorcycle CD 1864 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Richard Paramdeo on March 3, at Laluni Access Road Kuru Kuru Soesdyke/ Linden Highway. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $250,000 bail. A few months ago, Simeon was ordered to pay a total fine of $55,000 for being an unlicensed rider, and breach of insurance, among other traffic offences after appearing before Magistrate Daly. Police Inspector Michael Grant presented the
Travis Simeon prosecution’s case. Court facts stated that on the day in question, around 17:00hrs, the defendant was riding the motorcycle south along the eastern side of the Laluni Access Road, and collided with Paramdeo, who was a pedal cyclist at the time proceeding north along the eastern side of the said road. The motorcyclist and the pedal cyclist received injuries to the head and about the body and were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). They were both treated and admitted at the medical
institution. On May 6, Paramdeo was transferred to the Mackenzie Hospital. He subsequently succumbed, on May 18, without regaining consciousness. The matter was reported, investigations were carried out and Simeon was arrested and charged for the offence. This matter was adjourned until August 5, for statements. According to reports, Paramdeo, of Lot 192 Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was riding his cycle on his way home from school when he collided with Simeon who was riding his motorcycle, in the vicinity of the Kuru Kuru Cemetery. Paramdeo was rushed to the Guyana Defence Force’s medical centre in Timehri, then to the East Bank Regional Hospital and later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the GPHC. Simeon suffered a broken jaw and internal bleeding. He had to undergo a series of surgeries to correct his deformed lower jaw before he was discharged.
G/town not designed for this... (From page 6) and drainage canals are in working order. He added that teams from his Ministry are at various locations to provide immediate emergency services if the need arises. The Minister explained that the possibility of getting additional pumps from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is being considered.
The Government has committed to keeping the nation informed of its plans and initiatives to bring relief to the residents of the flood-hit communities. Also affected by the weather was the Hero CPL T20 match scheduled on Wednesday last between the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Jamaica Tallawahs. The fixture had to be abandoned.
In the meantime, with the long range weather forecast suggesting that there will be further intense rainfall, flooding is likely to abate within a 48-hour period. NCN TV and 98.1 FM promise that they will provide regular updates on the flood situation and the public is asked to stay tuned and heed all official advisories and warnings.

Coastal and Hinterland exchange programmes vital for building national identity - says Minister By Nicholas Peters Exchange programmes between the coast and the hinterland are necessary to build Guyana’s national identity in education, business, culture and sport. According to the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, such programmes will bring cultural awareness to a region of Guyana the majority of citizens are uninformed of. In a recent interview, Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Minister, Sydney Allicock said that exchange programmes can be implemented at the educational, scientific research and commercial industry levels. Guyana’s hinterland region accounts for approximately 76 percent of the country’s landmass. Of the country’s ten Administrative Regions, the hinterland is made up of five of those districts -Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten. Despite its vastness the region has remained relatively disconnected from the more densely populated Coastal areas. “We have found that the majority of Guyanese don’t know what they have, they don’t know the value of their country.” said the Minister. He told this publication that through youth, educational and cultural exchange programmes the Ministry can bring Indigenous People’s culture to the broader Guyanese society. “We (Guyana) have our Indigenous identity and we need to work on our national identity. It is all about arranging, organising and planning for more interaction between the Hinterland and the Coast,” added Minister Allicock. The Ministry, he added, will also be working in collaboration with the Education Ministry to do more in the field of research and documentation in the remote regions. Minister of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine was recently quoted as saying that it is time the country start looking into scholarships geared towards providing outstanding coastal students the opportunity to study in the hinterland regions. Such programmes, he opined, would allow students to study the vast wealth of Guyana’s natural resources as the country moves forward
Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock in improving its education system. “It is time,” Dr. Roopnaraine said, “that the coastland recognises that it has a great deal to learn from the hinterland.” Weighing in on the matter, Ministerial Advisor on Indigenous Affairs, Mervyn Williams revealed that moving forward the Ministry has a plan to document the posterity of indigenous languages, traditions, customs, personalities and heritage events. “We are going to promote cultural indigenous talents and will showcase them nationally and internationally,” said Williams. In showcasing these distinct aspects of Guyanese cultural identity, he added, the rest of the country will have the opportunity to recognise other “dimensions of life” with the aim of bring “the two Guyanas together”. In explaining the areas included in the plan, Williams said that sport and scouting will play an integral role in connecting the hinterland and coastal region. While expounding on the role of Guyana’s scout groups, the Ministerial Advisor shared that an exchange programme between the two regions in this regard will reintroduce the country’s young people to the practices and livelihood of citizens in the hinterland. “Coastal scouts groups – girls and boys – will be able to interact with our indigenous brothers and sisters. They will be learning about the cultures, foods, way of life and bringing to them a new understanding of Guyana that they have never been exposed to,” related the official. Williams noted that a similar programme from the Hinterland to the Coast would be implemented to achieve the same objective.

A section of the participants in the workshop An $8.3M workshop aimed at developing music education in primary schools was launched on Monday and, with its conclusion, the lives of countless students in Guyana are expected to be greatly enriched. The four-week workshop was launched by the Ministry of Education and will see approximately 160 teachers from all across Guyana benefiting from intensive training. A simple opening ceremony was held at the Theatre Guild and saw highranking officials such as Minister of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and Chief Education Officer Olato Sam attending. During his brief remarks, CEO Sam stated that the programme was an expansion of one of the Ministry’s critical components. According to Sam, children perform better when the arts are applied to their studies. He said too that teachers are some of the most creative persons in society and are therefore the best tools to impart such an important element of a child’s development. Similarly, Minister Roopnaraine emphasised that
the role of music education could not be understated. He stressed that children should not be deprived of music education. He explained that the purpose of the workshop was not to simply teach educators how to teach music but to teach them how to enrich their students’ lives. “We need to concentrate on really enriching the experiences of our students,” Roopnaraine stressed. He continued, “For me, exposing them to music very early on is one of the most wellknown, well tried, well tested and successful ways of doing this.” He added that with the introduction of a solid music education programme, the Ministry’s capacities would be strengthened for maximum performance. Additionally, the Education Minister said that music education would allow for more well-rounded students in Guyana who will in turn add value to society. “When I see children doing 20 subjects at an examination, I wonder to myself what kind of school life they must have. I want to see less of that,” Roopnaraine said. He said too that the programme would move
schools from simply being academic institutions to ones that are wholly comprehensive. When it came to the educators, Roopnaraine said that they too would be able to benefit from the programme. Deeming educators as “primary movers of development”, he opined that teachers needed to be empowered, whether it was by financial support or simply having their concerns addressed. He emphasised that this empowerment was paramount. “Your task is central to the development of the country; without you and your efforts, your enthusiasm, your dedication, I fear for all of us,” he said. The workshop is being facilitated by Paul Cort, a musician and Assistant Chief Examiner for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in Music. According to a Ministry official, the participating teachers were drawn from all of Guyana’s administrative regions. For far-flung regions, representatives are being sent. These representatives will head back to their regions and train educators in music,
From page 5 1997, thereby resulting in the current government having to now clean up the PPP’s mess, the PPP has again entertained a convoluted process in picking a candidate to become PPP and Opposition Leader in 2015. How did Mr. Jagdeo go from ‘having no interest in public office again’ to displacing former President Ramotar as the next Opposition Leader? The lack of transparency or democracy inside the PPP has to become teachable lessons from those who are intimately familiar for Guyanese to learn who and what to avoid so Guyana never reverts to Jagdeoism. And to this end,
Mr. Ramkarran’s long years of experience in the PPP, but especially during the JagdeoRamotar era, could go a long way in helping Guyanese understand the thinking behind the PPP’s decisions and de-

the official said. During the four weeks, the primary school teachers are expected to undergo approximately 60 hours of training. According to the Ministry, the workshop will be the first in a series of training sessions designed to build capacity and to equip teachers with the necessary skills to effectively deliver a music programme in primary schools. The main objectives will be to train and maintain a cadre of primary school teachers in music education, resuscitate and support singing in primary schools, and enrich the education process through the introduction of experience in the field of music. CEO Sam also indicated that the majority of the teachers trained during the workshop will become dedicated music teachers in their respective schools. The workshop is expected to particularly benefit students from disadvantaged groups such as those who are poor or who are from far-flung areas.

Future of BBC up for grabs as UK government kicks off review LONDON (Reuters) Britain’s newly elected Conservative government signalled yesterday it would cut back the BBC, the opening salvo in a battle over the future of the world’s biggest public service broadcaster. Any attempt to change the 92-year-old broadcaster provokes a fierce reaction in Britain, where it claims a unique cultural status from its role in showing everything from royal weddings and sports events to local news and popular dramas. Setting out proposals for the biggest overhaul of the BBC in at least a decade, the government said changes in viewing habits meant the current scale, scope and funding of the corporation may no longer be appropriate. “With so much more choice in what to consume and how to consume it, we must at least question whether the BBC should try to be all things to all people,” Media Secretary John Whittingdale told parliament. Supporters of the BBC say it is a prized national institution that projects British culture around the world while providing essential domestic and international news. But opponents as diverse as Scottish nationalists, media tycoons and some in Prime Minister David Cameron’s government say the BBC is a bloated organisation that throttles commercial competition and fails to properly balance its news
coverage. “We believe that this Green Paper would appear to herald a much diminished, less popular BBC,” the corporation said of the government’s consultation document. “That would be bad for Britain and would not be the BBC that the public has known and loved for over 90 years.” Known affectionately as “Auntie”, the BBC runs nine national TV channels, 10 national radio stations and a comprehensive website. With an overall income of 4.8 billion pounds ($7.5 billion) a year, it employs nearly 19,000 people. It is currently funded by a 145.50 pound ($226.92) licence fee paid by every TV-owning household as well as by some commercial income.
After an unexpectedly decisive election victory, Cameron’s government is in a strong position to take on the BBC. Whittingdale said the government would examine whether the BBC should be reduced in size, whether a subscription service or home levy would become more appropriate in time, and whether it needs stronger oversight from a new external regulator. Its commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, which promotes and sells its programming around the world, could be privatised. “Given the vast choice that audiences now have, there is an argument that the BBC might become more focused on a narrower, core set of services,” the government said. “A smaller BBC could see the public pay less for their TV licence and would also be likely to have a reduced market impact.” Long criticised by successive British governments and sections of the right-wing domestic press, the BBC says polling shows that audiences think it produces a broad range of high quality programmes. “Would it not be profoundly unpatriotic to seek to diminish the BBC and thereby diminish Britain?” said Chris Bryant, a lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party. “The BBC is not a government play-thing,” he said.
NEW DELHI (Reuters) Opposition parties boycotted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest attempt to build consensus around a business-friendly land bill, boding badly for his ambitious agenda of economic reform in a parliament session that starts next week. Almost half of the 31 chief ministers spurned Modi’s invitation to meet him in New Delhi to discuss the proposal to make it easier to buy farmland for development. The meeting ended earlier than expected. Modi has made the reform a central plank of his economic agenda, and told the meeting that a lack of land for roads, housing and industry was crimping economic growth. But the opposition says the bill is antifarmer and has blocked it in the Rajya Sabha for months. In his first year in office,
Modi has made life easier for Indian businesses by cutting red tape, but opposition protests have slowed his efforts at structural economic reforms he says are needed to make India a leading global economy. Addressing the media after Wednesday’s meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the message from the states present was to quickly find a solution to the impasse. “Either the centre must build a coalition and pass the land bill quickly, or give the flexibility to the states to pass their own laws,” he said. Modi has spent significant political capital trying to push the land law through parliament, and Jaitley’s comments raised the possibility that if he is unsuccessful again in the coming Monsoon session he might devolve the issue to states.
“If they give up on this, it will be a huge setback for industrialisation, and for planned urbanisation,” said Mohan Guruswamy, president of Centre for Policy Alternatives, a think tank. In the session due to begin on July 21, the government also plans to pass the biggest tax overhaul since independence, and may introduce labour bills aimed at job creation. But the Congress party has other ideas, and wants the prime minister to address parliament about what it says is corruption and influence trafficking by senior members of his party and government, before any debates on legislation. “We are not going to allow this government to ignore the critical issue of corruption, it all depends on what the prime minister says (in parliament)” said Congress spokesman Sanjay Jha.

Clico policyholders: Pay up or else... Brazil opens corruption probe against ex-president Lula
‘Resolve matter’: Head of the Clico Policyholders Group Peter Permell fields questions from the media outside the Eric Williams Financial Complex following his meeting with Finance Minister Larry Howai. —Photo: ANISTO ALVES Trinidad Express - IF government doesn’t pay up by this September’s general election, members of the Clico Policyholders Group (CPG) will let their right index fingers do the talking, group chairman Peter Permell warned Wednesday. Following a meeting with Finance Minister Larry Howai at the Ministry of Finance in Port of Spain, Permell told the media the discussion had been “unproductive” and it seemed that policyholders would have to wait longer for their money. Another meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday
with Howai, said Permell, speaking in the Central Bank’s courtyard on Independence Square, Port of Spain. In March this year, Central Bank Governor Jwala Rambarran announced the repayment of $7 billion to government by CLICO, in addition to the pay-out of $950 million to CLICO policyholders. “Based on the fact that the Central Bank Governor and the Minister of Finance has confirmed that Clico is fully solvent and Clico statutory fund is fully funded it means that those
policyholders are now due a difference between what was paid to them in 2012 and what is contractually due to them as we speak,” Permell said. He said the group had made “robust representation” and at times during the meeting there were a couple of “grey areas” that had to be sorted out. But anxious policyholders want to see this issue closed and in assuring manner, before the next general election, Permell said. He said there have been remarks by some policyholders, particularly those who supported the People’s Partnership in the last general election, that had former finance minister Wi n s t o n Dookeran remained in that office, the matter would have been resolved by now.
Brasília (AFP) - Brazilian prosecutors announced yesterday a probe into alleged influence peddling by former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on behalf of scandalridden construction giant Odebrecht. “There is an investigation into possible influence peddling by ex-president Lula with the leaders of other countries on behalf of the construction company Odebrecht,” a spokesman for the federal prosecutor’s office in the capital Brasilia said. The investigation, which drags the once highly popular Lula into Brazil’s ever deepening political and corruption crisis, was launched July 8, but only revealed yesterday. Lula’s foundation immediately issued a statement saying he had nothing to fear. “We are calm. The Lula Institute is certain of the transparency and legality of ex-president Lula’s activities,” spokesman Jose Chrispiniano said. Prosecutors announced in
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva May that they were considering the probe. According to the prosecutor ’s office, the alleged influence peddling took place between 2011 and 2014, after Lula left office, having been replaced by his hand-picked successor from the Workers’ Party, Dilma Rousseff. As an ex-president, Lula retained his status as a major world figure and the face of commodity-rich Brazil’s rise to economic power. Prosecutors allege that he
used that clout to land billiondollar deals for Odebrecht in Latin America and Africa. He is also alleged to have helped persuade the state-owned development bank BNDES to finance the foreign projects. Brazil’s political and elite business circles have been thrown into commotion by a growing probe into a bribesand-kickbacks network that saw companies including Odebrecht bribing politically connected executives at state oil giant Petrobras to grant inflated contracts.
In a Tsunami Information Statement issued after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that rocked several islands, including Barbados, St. Lucia, and Martinique, at 11:16 a.m., the PTWC said “a destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data”. “However, there is the small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than 100 km from the earthquake epicenter,” it added. The epicenter of that quake – the second for the day – was located 125 km northeast of Barbados, Bridgetown; 234 km east of Castries, St. Lucia and 255 km
east southeast of Fort-deFrance, Martinique. The PTWC issues Tsunami Information Statements to inform about the occurrence of a large earthquake with little or no tsunami generating potential. A Tsunami Watch Statement is issued when there is potential for a destructive tsunami. Prior to the 6.4 quake, a 5.7 magnitude tremor shook the islands at 7:01 a.m. the same distance from Barbados, 240 km east of Castries and 262 km east southeast of Fortde-France, and a smaller one occurred at 7:52 a.m., according to the UWI Seismic Research Centre. Three others were recorded at 11:29 a.m., 11:36 a.m., and 12:23 p.m.
No threat of local tsunami after earthquakes shake Eastern Caribbean
RIDGETOWN, Barbados – One of the six earthquakes that rattled parts of the Eastern Caribbean triggered the “small possibility” of a local tsunami, but there is no major tsunami threat or tsunami warning in effect. That’s according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC).

Brazil House speaker weighs possibility of Rousseff impeachment BRASILIA (Reuters) The speaker of Brazil’s lower house of Congress said yesterday he is weighing legal arguments to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, which would be the first ouster of a sitting president in the country in nearly 23 years. Eduardo Cunha, a leader of the PMDB party that is in charge of deciding whether to move ahead with impeachment, said such proceedings would be a step backwards for democracy, but added he expects a legal analysis on the matter within 30 days. “I requested another legal analysis and I’m waiting to read that myself and come to a conclusion,” Cunha told journalists. Cunha had dismissed previous requests for impeachment out of hand, but calls are mounting from opposition lawmakers to unseat Rousseff for alleged
Dilma Rousseff campaign finance irregularities tied to a bribery scandal at state-run oil firm Petrobras. Cunha has himself been named in a Supreme Court investigation of corruption at Petrobras, formally known as Petroleo Brasileiro SA. Although his party is part of the governing coalition, Cunha has dealt Rousseff a series of embarrassing defeats in Congress and his
opposition has grown more strident as the chances of formal charges has risen. of Public Workers’ (NUPW) executive and administrative staff quarantined after a package containing a powdery substance and threatening messages was opened at the union’s headquarters Wednesday evening. The union, which last Monday led a march through the capital – supported by the Barbados Workers’ Union and members of the Opposition Barbados Labour Party whose leader Mia Mottley was up front and centre – and threatened a national strike this past week, says it believes it is an attempt at intimidation. The package was addressed to NUPW acting
general secretary Roslyn Smith and was opened by an employee at the union’s headquarters. It contained the powder wrapped in newspaper pages that featured stories about the protest action. The NUPW’s second vice-president Fabian Jones Wednesday took to social media with pictures and messages in which he provided information about what was happening and declared that he would not be intimidated. “The package had some threats about finishing us off one by one and some specific threats were made to our President Akanni McDowall and also the Leader of the Opposition,” he wrote.

Raul Castro calls for new Cuba-US relationship The Cuban President, Raul Castro, has said his country must establish a new kind of relationship with the United States. In a speech to the N a t i o n a l A s s e m b l y, M r Castro said that, for normal relations to resume, a US embargo on Cuba would have to be lifted. He also called for the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay to be returned to Cuba. On Monday both countries are set to reestablish diplomatic ties for the first time since 1959.
“We are talking about forging a new kind of relationship between both states, different from our entire common history,” President Castro told the Cuban National Assembly. He acknowledged President Obama’s efforts to try to get a debate going on the embargo despite the fact that it was up to the US Congress to vote on the matter. US officials have said several times that Guantanamo Bay is not on the agenda for discussion with
Cuba. The US and Cuba began secret negotiations on restoring ties two years ago. This led to a historic announcement on 17 December last year where President Castro and President Obama said they had swapped prisoners and would seek to normalise relations. On Monday both countries are set to reopen embassies in each other’s capitals as a first formal step towards re-establishing relations. (BBC News)

Guyana most likely to rank poorly on 2015 Corruption Index - TIGI Director By Kiana Wilburg Given the fact that Guyana is still to make significant strides in the fight against corruption, Director of Transparency Institute Guyana Inc. (TIGI), Gino Persaud revealed that it should come as no surprise if the country ranks poorly again on the 2015 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). He made this statement at
the Index in terms of how they view Guyana, especially for business opportunities, a gigantic effort is needed at all levels to improve Guyana’s standing on the CPI. Goolsarran in his recent writings recalled other pertinent points raised by the Chairman at the ceremony which was well attended by government officials including, Prime Minister
“Perceptions of corruption continue to remain high; those perceptions would not go away in the near future” the book launch of Former Auditor General, Anand Goolsarran at Pegasus Hotel some weeks ago. In 2012, Guyana ranked a very poor 28 out of 100 points in the CPI. The said report showed Guyana doing worse than every other country in Caricom except for Haiti, which has also traditionally been one of the worst performers. Persaud said, “Perceptions of corruption continue to remain high; those perceptions would not go away in the near future; and the 2015 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which is due in December of this year, is unlikely to see any significant improvement.” He said that given the fact that the international community as well as foreign investors place reliance on
Moses Nagamootoo and Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan. At the event, Persaud referred to the efforts TIGI made over the years in promoting good governance, transparency and accountability. He also reminded of the body’s persistent calls for all public revenues to be paid into the Consolidated Fund; the activation of the Procurement Commission; the effective functioning of the Integrity Commission; the overhaul of the existing legislation on access to information; and the introduction of legislation on whistleblower protection and campaign financing. In addition to this, Goolsarran recalled statements made by Persaud which were in sync with those in his second book about

Kaieteur News understand that Harallall, a pedestrian, was struck down by a motorcycle ridden by Tyrone Liverpool around 03:45 hrs. According to the police both the pedestrian and the motorcyclist sustained injuries. Haralall is said to
have broken both legs while Liverpool sustained injuries to the head and mouth. One of Liverpool’s aunts who was at the hospital but requested anonymity, said that she was at home when she received a call informing her about the incident. The woman said that she along with other family members rushed to the hospital only to be informed that they would not be allowed to visit the patient at that time. Efforts to contact Harallall’s family proved futile. Police are still investigating.

character assassinations and vilifications of persons who have displayed the courage to speak out on issues that negatively impact on good governance, transparency and accountability. The Chartered Accountant said, “These attacks were Statesponsored, and many of the perpetrators were anonymous letter writers and bloggers who have long been suspected, now confirmed, of being compensated financially using the resources of the State. These are in themselves not only acts of corruption, but also represent the misappropriation of public funds.” He added, “I am also on record as having stated the accounting officers and/or those responsible for signing the contracts should be held personally responsible. The termination of the services of these persons is simply not enough, while those who initiated these unconscionable and despicable acts, indeed the architects of this Statesponsored criminal behaviour, are allowed to get away scot-free.” He reminded of how Persaud was a victim of such attacks, and was blocked by someone higher up in the then Administration from taking up an important position with a foreign company operating in Guyana because of his association with TIGI. Goolsarran said, “These immoral, unethical and evil acts should never again be allowed to be rear their ugly heads, and hopefully they have been relegated to the indignity of the dustbin of Guyanese history.” The TIGI Director at the
Chartered Accountant, Anand Goolsarran book launch also referred to a letter written to Transparency International by a former PPP Minister requesting the parent body to take appropriate action to purge the Institute of members whom he claimed were bitter and were displaying anti-government sentiments. The letter was however ignored. Goolsarran then sought to invite the public to read “The truth about the restoration of public accountability in Guyana”, as contained in Unit 28 of the said book. Since its establishment, the Chairman of TIGI said that the TIGI passed through very rough times and was always swimming against the tide. He said that many a time, members of TIGI felt that the Institute would have gone under but “we held steadfastly to our sense of purpose and in the end we prevailed as the foremost civil society organization devoted to the promotion of good

governance, transparency and accountability, and to fighting corruption.” He added, “It is therefore a welcome relief that the Prime Minister and other Ministers of the Government graced the occasion with their presence.” Nagamootoo, in his remarks at the event said jokingly that if he did not attend the launch, “it would be an act of corruption.” Additionally, Goolsarran said that TIGI alone cannot fight corruption. He said that the Institute is on record as having offered to reach out and work with government and the private sector in a genuine partnership to rid this country of corruption. “For this to happen, however, there must be an acknowledgement of the extent to which corruption is perceived to exist in Guyana and a genuine commitment on the part of the Government to address the issue. Criticisms must not be viewed as attacks
on the Government, and the attitude of “circling the wagons” and asking “where is the evidence?” only serves to exacerbate the problem,” the former Auditor General said. He said however that so far, the signs are encouraging, and TIGI under its new President must not hesitate to renew its offer to the new Administration and the Private Sector. Referring to results of the CPI as it relates to Trinidad and Tobago, Goolsarran said that the Governor-General is reported to have told the Government “Stop the arrogance.” He said that most governments, regardless of how they feel about the index as it relates to their countries, accept it in good faith, and do whatever it takes to bring about an improvement in their countries’ standing. “It is time Guyana wakes up to this reality,’ he concluded.

Chris Froome retains Tour de France yellow jersey Chris Froome fended off numerous attacks in maintaining his commanding lead in yesterday’s final stage in the Pyrenees. The 30-year-old’s Team Sky squad, with Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas to the fore, successfully nullified attempted attacks by Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali and Nairo Quintana as Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) won stage 12 to Plateau de Beille. The stage began in 35C heat at the start in Lannemezan, but conditions on the 195-kilometres route became challenging, with torrential rain falling on the final climb and thunder clapping overhead. Contador, Nibali and Quintana made their moves within the space of a few minutes on the brutal 15.8km finishing ascent, but Porte and then Thomas reeled them in. Froome then stretched his legs and next followed an attack by Quintana’s Movistar team-mate Alejandro Valverde. Froome crossed six minutes 47 seconds behind Rodriguez, who soloed to his second win of the race, following his triumph on stage three to Mur de Huy, in 10th place alongside the main protagonists. Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing) remained 2:52 behind in second place and Quintana third, 3:09 adrift. Valverde remained fourth, 3:58 behind, Thomas fifth, 4:03 back, and Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) one second further behind in sixth. Defending champion Nibali (Astana) stayed 7:47 adrift despite appearing likely to lose contact. World champion Michal Kwiatkowski (EtixxQuickStep) had seemed to be performing under-par early in the race, but was prominent until the day’s final climb, when he was caught and overtaken by Rodriguez. Kwiatkowski has been linked with a move to Team Sky for the 2016 season, although UCI rules prohibit discussion of transfers until August 1. His team-mate Mark Cavendish has a slim chance of a 27th Tour stage win on Friday’s bumpy 198.5km stage from Muret to Rodez, but a breakaway could prevail once again as the race traverses east towards the Alps. Alex Dowsett (Movistar) abandoned after being cut adrift early in the stage, having found the going tough since damaging an elbow in a crash on stage four.
A 22-rider lead group formed and it fractured the third of the day’s four categorised climbs, the 12.9km category one ascent of Port de Lers. Kwiatkowski and Sep Vanmarcke (Lotto-Jumbo) broke clear over the top and led by 1:30 at the foot of the finishing ascent to Plateau de Beille. Team Sky, led by Peter Kennaugh, controlled the tempo of the peloton, which was more than 10 minutes adrift as up ahead Kwiatkowski forged on alone with 13.5km to go. Rodriguez reeled in Kwiatkowski with 7.7km to go and then Fuglsang passed the world champion, too. Behind them Team Sky continued to drive the main bunch, with Porte followed by Thomas and Froome. Contador made his move and Team Sky did not initially react, riding tempo in an effort to reel in
the Spaniard. His bid to break free was short lived and Nibali was next to try. The Italian was more successful than Contador in opening up a gap, but Team Sky continued to ride an even pace. Valverde next accelerated in a bid to bridge the gap to Nibali. Porte picked up the pace slightly and reeled in both men. Quintana next made his move and, with Porte spent, Thomas led the chase with Froome on his wheel and once more the attack floundered.Froome then accelerated, stretching his rivals. Valverde responded and Froome followed, with Quintana and Contador behind him. Valverde’s move was followed by another by his team-mate Quintana, but Froome stayed in his saddle as the group passed 4km to go. Quintana attacked once more with 3km to go, but again Froome followed and nullified the effort. Valverde stole a second in the closing metres, but it mattered little after another strong defensive showing from Froome and Team Sky. (Mailonline)

RED STEEL UPSET TRIDENTS IN TRINIDAD A sensational fifty from Darren Bravo (80*) set the platform for a crucial victory for bottom-of-the-table Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel against top-of-the-table Barbados Tridents. Bravo’s thrilling 80 off 44 balls helped the Red Steel to an imposing total of 184-4 having won the toss and elected to bat. Bravo began his innings relatively slowly, scoring 36 off his first 32 balls before exploding at the death to blitz 44 from his final 12 deliveries. He ended up hitting seven sixes including one huge 108 metre heave over the leg-side. Bravo was assisted throughout much of the innings by Jacques Kallis who made a composed and important 49 off 43 balls. Kallis laid a useful foundation with opening partner Cameron Delport who scored 29 off 28. The Red Steel’s run rate however only breached seven just once in the first 16 overs before Darren Bravo, in partnership with
Dwayne Bravo tucked into the Tridents death bowling, plundering 50 runs from the final 24 balls. The target of 185 was a stiff one and the Tridents had to attack from the get-go. Their chase got off to a steady start before the pressure did for Dwayne Smith in the third over when he was bowled through the gate by a googly from Samuel Badree. Ashley Nurse followed soon after and then just two balls later so did Dilshan Munaweera. With Misbah-ul-Haq and Kieron Pollard still to call on however the Tridents had hope. However when they were dismissed within seven balls of each other as the run-rate began to climb the match was quite suddenly over as a contest. Badree was sensational for the Red Steel taking 2-20 from his four overs while Dwayne Bravo took 3-16 as the home side eventually bowled the Tridents out for 112 to complete an impressive and hugely important 72 run victory.

Trinidad & Tobago draws with Mexico to win Group C Charlotte, North Carolina – In an encounter contested more like a final rather than one between sides having already earned quarterfinal berths, Trinidad & Tobago (2-1-0, 7 points) and Mexico (1-2-0, 5 points) battled to a 4-4 draw in the last game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup’s group stage on Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium. The result clinched the top spot in Group C for the Trinidadians, while Mexico was forced to settle for second place. They will next meet Panama and Costa Rica, respectively, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for places in the competition’s final four. It looked like the Mexicans were on the way to a straightforward victory, owning a 2-0 lead shortly after the break. Paul Aguilar struck for the first goal in the 32nd minute. A left-sided cross by Yasser Corona into the box found Carlos Vela, who back-headed the ball towards the far post. After breaking free from h i s m a r k e r, A g u i l a r somehow squeezed the ball between goalkeeper Marvin Phillip and the woodwork for his first career Gold Cup goal. Six minutes into the second half, Vela etched his name onto the scoresheet with a brilliant individual effort. The 26-year-old dribbled into the left side of the box, cut the ball inside on defender Yohance Marshall to create separation and then took a right-footed shot that glanced off the near post, before crossing the line. From that point, Kenwyne Jones grabbed hold of the game for Trinidad with a display strength, skill and cleverness that won’t soon be forgotten. In the 55th minute, he dribbled 40 yards into the Mexican penalty area and drew defenders Francisco Javier Rodriguez and Diego Reyes towards him. Sensing an imbalance, Jones poked the ball left towards a racing Keron Cummings, who swooped in to finish with his left foot from nine-yards out. Jones equalized three minutes later, making a brilliant off-the-ball run towards the left post, which allowed him to slot coolly Cordell Cato’s right-sided feed past goalkeeper
Guillermo Ochoa. The Caribbean runnerup kept up the pressure and took a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute with an incredibly well-worked play off a rightsided throw-in by Aubrey David, who connected with Jones in the box. As Jones was chesting the ball down, two Trinidadians made planned runs in different directions, seemingly causing confusion in the Mexican defense. As a result, Cummings was left unattended, allowing him to lash beyond Ochoa into the far-side netting with his left foot from 12 yards. With Mexico trying to regroup, Jones hit right post after using his strength to position himself for a potentially game-ending attempt. The six-time CONCACAF champion, though, buckled down and netted twice to regain the lead. Andres Guardado equalized in the 87th minute, half-volleying a short clearance that took a slight deflection off the head of Meckeil Williams and eluded Phillip’s desperate stretch. Mexico thought first place was theirs one minute
into stoppage time, when Miguel Layun – positioned on the left — collected a ball punched in his direction by Phillip. The former Club America star dribbled into the box and sent what appeared to be a half shothalf pass in front of the net, where it deflected off Jones and into the goal. Guyana set to defend Regional U-19 50-over title in Jamaica By Zaheer Mohamed The National Under-19 team is currently preparing to defend its regional 50over title later this month in Jamaica. The players are presently encamped under Coaches Michael Hyles Franco and Adrian Amsterdam at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence. However Guyana will not be able to defend its three-day crown since the West Indies Cricket Board has surprisingly chosen not to play this version. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Coach Amsterdam said he is confident the team will be successful. He added that preparations has been somewhat affected by the weather but is satisfied with the progress of the players, stating that a lot of emphasis has been placed on the mental and physical aspects. “Although we have a talented team we will not take our opponents for granted. A lot is expected from Shimron Hetymer, Keemo Paul, Balchand Baldeo and Ronlado
Mohamed; these players were instrumental in our double success last year.” The coach pointed out that running between the wickets, fielding and building partnerships in the middle are key areas while stating his satisfaction with the fitness levels of the players, noting that there is always room for improvement. Amsterdam explained that the players are upbeat and are willing to work hard for success. “One of the main features of the team is that our fast bowlers are middle order batsmen and once they play as a unit and to their potential, we will be difficult to beat”, he said. Captain Travis Persaud, like Amsterdam believes the players have the ability to succeed in Jamaica. He said they are gelling nicely adding that he expects support from the senior players, Hetymer and Paul. “One of the keys will be to acclimatize quickly b e c a u s e i t ’s a s h o r t tournament,” he noted, adding that ninety percent of the game is played above the shoulders. The team is expected to

FIFA hires crisis consultants as first official extradited to U.S. Swiss authorities extradited to the United States the first of seven current and former FIFA officials arrested in a corruption investigation while world soccer’s governing body hired a New York-based crisis communications firm to help handle multinational probes and try to restore its tarnished image. Swiss authorities did not name the extradited official, but the news came six days after a source told Reuters that Jeffrey Webb - one of seven current and former FIFA executives arrested in Switzerland in May -
had agreed not to fight his extradition. Webb and the others have been swept up in a U.S.-led probe into allegations of bribery, fraud and money laundering, including possible corruption in the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar, respectively. The allegations have roiled the world’s most popular sport, prompting FIFA President Sepp Blatter to say he plans to step down and raising uncomfortable questions for the body’s corporate sponsors. - Hooper
By Sean Devers Carl Hooper, the elegant former Guyana and West Indies batsman and now Head Coach of the Guyana Amazon Warriors told the Media yesterday ahead of tonight’s Hero CPL T20 clash with the St Lucia Zouks that the conditions at the Providence will influence team selection. The 48-year-old Hooper with 102 Tests and 227 ODIs to his name, explained that the pitches in Guyana are low and slow and offer turn for the spinners which will result in a different bowling attack being assembled for tonight’s must win game. “We played three fast bowlers in Jamaica because
the dec k there was quicker and had more bounce than the ones here so that and the opposition we will come up against tomorrow (Today) will dictate who we pick for the game,” Hooper, who has 13 Test and 7 ODI tons, disclosed. Bishoo did not play in Jamaica but fans could see all three specialist spinners in the squad playing tonight. Hooper informed that there are no injury worries in the Amazon’s camp. Skipper Denish Ramdin said team spirit was high among the players despite Wednesday’s washed out match in which the Warriors had to share the two points with the Jamaica Tallawahs. “We are disappointed that we did not have the chance to get two important points for that game but there is nothing we could do about things we can’t control, but we can plan
for future games,” said the 30-year-old Trinidadian Ramdin. Ramdin reminded that tonight’s game is a crucial one for the Warriors since they need to get the two from the Zouks, who play their last match and are on nine points while the Guyana Franchise sit on seven points but have three games, including tonight’s match, to play. “We are confident of doing well here since we have always done well at Providence. St Lucia Zouks beat us in St Lucia in the first round but this is a different pitch and we have selected different batsmen from that game” the West Indies Test Captain disclosed. Ramdin said he felt for the large crowd which turned up in rain to support their team and was very impressed with how fast the ground, which was under water at 17:00hrs, dried out within 15 minutes later but the persistent rain resulted in the game being abandoned.

Warriors battle rain and Zouks tonight at Providence
By Sean Devers The Guyana Amazon Warriors would have to win two of their last three matches to qualify for the semi-finals of the third edition of the Hero CPL T20 cricket tournament scheduled for Trinidad from July 23-27. Following their abandoned game on Wednesday with Jamaica Tallawahs giving both teams one point, it’s imperative that they go all out for a victory against the St Lucia Zouks tonight from 20:00hrs at Providence. The Warriors have seven points with three games to play while the Zouks, who play their final match tonight, are on nine points from nine games and are desperately seeking two points from this game to keep their semifinals hopes alive. The middle of July is usually the dry season in Guyana but
A relaxed Carl Hooper Chats with Courtly Ambrose at Providence yesterday
heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightening washed out their last match without a ball being bowled to the disappointment of a sold out crowd and tonight both teams will have one eye on each other and other one on the weather as the
Warriors battles the Zouks and the rain which is again forecast for today. The encouraging thing for the home team franchise is that the Providence Stadium is one of the fastest drying International cricket grounds in the world and the
slow low pitch here should favor Warriors’ off-spinner Sunil Narine, leg spinner Devendra Bishoo and leftarm spinner Veerasammy Permaul while seam bowler Paul Wintz should bowl well in Guyana’s conditions and could replace Merchant DeLange in the side. Once the rain, which left several areas in Demerara under water and is forecast for today, stays away, the game could see another capacity crowd. The Warriors, with two wins and two losses from four matches could start as favorites for tonight’s game. Led by 35-year-old former England superstar Kevin Pietersen in the absence of Darren Sammy who broke his arm while batting, the Zouks will also depend on the inform Andre Fletcher who is second in the batting aggregate with 354 runs and along with leading scorer and the only centurion this season, Marlon Samuels, are the only batsmen with 300 runs. Pietersen is fifth highest run scorer with 271 runs. Johnson Charles, Ross Ta y l o r a n d B r e n d o n McCullum will hope to contribute with the bat while the Zouks possess one of the
better fast bowling attacks in the competition in the genuinely quick Fidel Edwards, Shannon Gabriel, Kemar Roach and left-arm pacer Delorn Johnson. Off spinners Shane Shillingford and Liam Sebastien along with legspinner Eddie Leie makes them a formidable side and it is somewhat surprising that the Zouks only have four wins including a close tworun last ball victory over the Warriors in St Lucia when Shiv Chanderpaul faced 19 dot balls in a painstaking seven. The Amazon Warriors will need Assad Fudadin, who had two good knocks as opener, to be a bit more positive in the power-play overs to not put too much pressure on Lindl Simmons. Skipper Denish Ramdin has batted well at number three while 40-year-old Brad Hodge (234) has been a revelation with bat in the tournament and is the only batsman from the local Franchise with more than 150 runs while Chris Barnwell, who is batting too low in the order, needs to contribute more with the bat since his bowling seems to have gone off the boil in recent times. DeLange and Ronsford
Beaton (the Warriors leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps), both genuinely quick, could find bowling on the slow Providence track not much fun under lights. The Tridents are on top with 10 points from eight matches while, depending on tonight’s result, the Tallawahs, the Patriots, the Zouks and the Red Steel could find themselves battling for the last semifinal spot, that is if the rain does not spoil the warriors’ dance. Guyana Amazon Warriors: Lindl Simmons, Assad Fudadin, Denish Ramdin (Captain), Brad Hodge, Chris Barnwell, David Wiese, Sunil Narine, Paul Wintz, Devendra B i s h o o , Ve e r a s a m m y Permaul, Ronsford Beaton, Umar Akmal, Merchant DeLange, Trevon Griffith, Shemron Hetymer, Shiv Chanderpaul. St Lucia Zouks: Kevin Pietersen (Captain), Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Ross Tailor, Henry Davids, Keddy Lesporis, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mayers, Gidron Pope, Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Liam Sebastien, Shane Shillingford, Eddie Leie, Delorn Johnson.
