Norton pours cold water on Ali’s call for probe into Su-gate scandal — says police force too compromised to do such O p p o s i t i o n L e a d e r, Aubrey Norton does not believe that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) should probe the allegations of corruption and bribery that were leveled against the country’s Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, in the release of a damning documentary by Vice News.

According to Norton, an independent investigation should be conducted, as the Police Force is politicised and controlled by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government. He was at the time responding to a statement made by President Irfaan Ali who said on Monday that the allegations should be probed. The Head of State told reporters, “Any allegations against a system has to be taken seriously…what is clear is that there are some people there who are saying that they are involved in such activity if you look at the video…that definitely requires an investigation. It’s a no-nonsense! It’s a nononsense and I am hoping that the relevant security and the relevant agencies are looking at this because it is clear that someone said that they are involved so definitely they will be looking at that.”

The Leader of the Opposition further stated that Mr. Jagdeo must be sent home to allow an unhindered process. He argued, “what little faith the people were willing to invest in the PPP has now been wrecked by allegations of corruption in the Su-gate affair. The President’s call for law enforcement to investigate Jagdeo rings hallow. In a democratic society, Jagdeo must be fired to pave the way for an independent investigation. The President could only be taken seriously

if he fires the second Vice President and he invites independent and credible investigators to deal with the allegations of bribery and corruption and allow the law to take its course.”

Norton said it was important to note that recent polls have confirmed that the public has simply lost trust in the country’s institutions such as the GPF and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

Insisting that President Ali’s comments are “utter garbage” the Opposition Leader reasoned that the GPF has become an arm of the government, no longer carrying out its functions in an independent manner. “ P r e s i d e n t A l i ’s comments that they don’t intervene in the police and that law enforcement should take its course when it comes to the allegations against the second Vice President, utter garbage! The PPP intervenes in the Police Force daily. The PPP does not allow the Guyana Police Force to operate as an independent institution seeking to enforce law etcetera. Any democratic society in the world, if the kind of allegations are made against a senior government official the first step that the government should take is to fire that person. Remove them from office. How do you leave somebody like the Vice President in office as powerful as he is and then ask the police who live in fear, who you control and dominate, to investigate?

Oil and Gas must not drive Govt. borrowing spree - Economists warn of increasing debt

Local economist, Elson Lowe has warned that Guyana should not allow its debt to climb due to the projections of the oil and gas sector. According to Lowe, this type of borrowing is risky since it is based on projections from oil and gas prices which are subject to extreme volatility.

“At present, Guyana is borrowing based on its projected oil and gas revenues but the government must take into consideration that oil prices are subject to rapid rise and fall based on the situations of the global economy…This opens Guyana up to some real risks if it is left in a place where the country cannot service its debt,” Lowe said.

Recently, a new Vice News documentary surfaced in which allegations of money laundering were included. In the 24 minute documentary from its undercover mission in Guyana and in which a Chinese national was seen on a hidden camera explaining how he is able transfer large sums cash into the country, undetected from the relevant authorities and tax free.

man whose name was given as “Chan” had entered Guyana and posed as individuals looking to invest i n t h e c o u n t r y. C h a n reportedly posed as a Chinese businessman and Yeung acted as his secretary.

According to the documentary aired, they were introduced by an elite circle of Chinese businessmen in the country, to Su Zhirong, a suspected “middleman” who allegedly negotiates deals between potential investors and the government of Guyana. Su told them that he was in a position to help with arranging a deal, because of his close ties with Jagdeo.

Su was identified as a tenant of the Vice President but also related to the undercover journalist that he works as an agent for Jagdeo, in negotiating deals and collecting bribes for such transactions. Jagdeo has denied the allegations and threatened to sue Su.

Stabroek Block profits pull Hess from brink of debt ...positioned to be company’s engine of growth in future Three months ago, the parent company for Hess Guyana Exploration Limited, Hess Corporation based in the US had a debt to capitalization ratio of 55 percent but according to analysts, “with so much revenue coming in, that is much less of a concern.”

This, according to Investors Alley analyst, Tony Daltorio—currently the editor of Market Mavens—who in a recent analysis noted that, “the real excitement for investors in Hess is centered on the growing Stabroek Block, offshore Guyana.”

It’s “the firm’s core growth engine going forward and is a game-changer for the company, due to its large scale and exceptional economics,” it was noted.

This area is one of the highest margin, lowest carbon intensity oil developments globally, according to a report by the energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

“Barrels from this field, the largest discovered in the last decade, are mainly light, which helps meet the rising demand for relatively lowcarbon-intensity liquids.”

It was noted that at present, Hess is not one of Wall Street’s favourites because of its high debt level and at the end of the first quarter, its debt to capitalization ratio was above 55 percent.

Additional good news for Hess is that oil demand is set to top pre-pandemic levels next year, with 80 percent of the growth in demand coming from nonOECD nations such as Guyana.

According to Daltorio, “just as the West seeks to use less oil, its demand is being replaced quickly by the emerging

Hess CEO, John Hess markets.”

He added, “All of this is very good news for any oil company that can increase its oil output at low cost to take advantage of high prices. One such company is Hess Corporation (HES), which is highly leveraged to the price of oil.”

It was noted that the Stabroek Block, where Hess has a 30 percent interest and

According to Daltorio, current management guidance indicates six development phases will come online by 2027, resulting in gross volumes of about 1.2 million barrels a day of oil output. In April last, the company announced it is going ahead with its fourth development in the field, Yellowtail, which should produce 250,000 barrels per day starting in 2025.

The third development on the Stabroek Block at the Payara Field, with capacity of approximately 220,000 barrels of oil per day, is ahead of schedule and expected to start producing in late 2023.

These in addition to the two producing fields in the Stabroek Block—Liza I and II. It was noted that after Goldman Sachs analysts sifted through hundreds of oil and gas projects globally, it identified Hess as one the few winners “who own material new projects that are highly profitable and will materially lift their future cash flows and production”.

Additionally, it was noted that the company’s four oil developments in Guyana have a breakeven oil price of between US$25 per barrel and US$35 per barrel.

By 2026, the overall company breakeven oil price is forecast to decrease to an oil price of roughly US$45 per barrel.

This, he reiterated “will translate to cash flow growth being strong over the coming years.

Cash flow is forecast to grow at 25 percent annually through 2026, more than double the top-line growth. That makes Hess stock a buy on its recent weakness.”

ExxonMobil as the operator, is large and continues to grow with the company recently increasing the gross discovered recoverable estimate to approximately 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent, up from the previous estimate of about 10 billion.

The power of protests Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa just had to go. He was forced to leave office under an unceasing storm of protests by fed-up citizens of that island country. Once again, it should register with Guyanese that protest done the right way for the right reasons leads to the right results.

Corrupt and incompetent leaders, failed and foolish heads of state, and stubborn and stone-headed presidents or prime ministers are pressured to give up power under a cloud of shame. Protest is the power that the people have in their hands to alter the direction of their lives, protest is the strength to improve the substance of their existence, and protest is the energy of the people channeled via appropriate methods to make changes happen.

If Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, had his way, he would still be there, and carrying on with his policies and programmes that inflicted so much harm on the people, but whose will he consistently ignored because power came to mean so much to him. It was how he abused it to take care of his family and wide circle of cronies using the dwindling wealth of the State. It could not have been imagined in an advanced political system like that of the United States, but Donald Trump went to extreme lengths to hold on to the reins of power. The former American Chief Executive went so far as to inflict the unbelievable on the American: first, he caused some of them to die, and then he put them in a state of war against one another. This all came about because he refused to obey the will of the people, and was committed to perpetuating his delusions and excesses on his own countrymen and women.

We have a near identical situation developing by leaps and bounds in Guyana with leaders in the current PPPC Government, where they commit one atrocity after another on the Guyanese people. They deceive and mislead Guyanese with carefully constructed lies, engage in endless webs of secrecy under the camouflage of confidentiality, and are party to costly corruptions that further pressure already struggling citizens. And just like Rajapaksa and Trump (and other national leaders cut from that same mold), Government of Guyana leaders surround themselves with men and women who would justify any wrongdoing, rationalize any damage inflicted upon the hopes and aspirations of Guyanese.

Issues raised about leaderships corruptions fall on deaf ears with shameless followers running forward with any kind of ridiculous and embarrassing defenses of their leaders, not so much out of passionate convictions, but to prove their worth. Guyanese live with an ugly and deformed oil contract, which leaders promised to renegotiate. When they now go back on that promise, their faithful followers are so deeply committed to any failure of their own that they drum up any excuse, come up with any manner of positions that lack logic and standing to defend the betrayals of their leaders. More and more Guyanese are tired of all this, and not falling for any of it, or exhibiting much patience with any of the usual leadership trickiness, as presented by their indebted backers. Citizens are so disgusted and angry that they are coming out into the streets to make their voices heard, and expand the attentions drawn to what is going on in Guyana. When they engage in well-organized, properly managed, protest exercises, there is intensifying of the pressure placed on obstinate leaders in the PPPC Government.

They must be moving for what is better for all citizens of poor Guyana, or they, the leaders, must give up their hold on power, and get out of office. We know that there is little prospect of the likes of the current crop of Guyanese leaders relinquishing the keys to power. Former President David Granger had great difficulty in his time with doing so, but eventually was forced to let go. It is the same story with today’s Government leaders, they refuse to listen to the people, and then compound the problem by insisting that they be allowed to continue as before. Well, they must change for the better, or their fate promises to be like that of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

HOW COULD ‘ONE GUYANA’ LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND? DEAR EDITOR, A large majority of Guyanese will support a ‘One Guyana’ that provides equal economic and social opportunities for every single citizen to improve themselves, their families and their communities in a peaceful and safe nation.

This means that no one can be left behind in our diverse nation - women, men, youth, children, all ethnic communities, workers, farmers, differently-abled people, and persons who are unemployed, marginalised, dispossessed and hungry.

For any nation, this is a significant challenge. Yes, we can overcome it but to do so will not be easy. Failure could threaten social and economic stability, as is happening presently in many countries.

In contrast to other countries, the government has to be commended for promptly implementing a diversity of programmes to meet the immediate needs of citizens such as the part-time workers programme; training programmes, scholarships and support for small businesses, especially for youth and women; the removal of taxes; cash grants; financial support for farmers; grants to hinterland and riverine communities; flood relief, assistance to differently-abled persons and improved services in the health, education, housing and social service sectors.

However, although these programmes are broadly

supported and includes Guyanese of all ethnicities, genders, ages and political persuasions, there is a growing concern that many government ministries and agencies are becoming overwhelmed because they presently lack the required thinking, knowledge, capabilities and experiences to ensure that, ‘on the ground’, no individual and no family are left behind.

Consequently, even with good intentions, hard work and determination, many government ministries and agencies will not be able, on their own, to assure every Guyanese equal treatment and equal access.

To meet that goal, there has to be partnerships between ministries and agencies, at the national, regional and local levels, and non-governmental organisations such as trade unions, business organisations, community groups, religious bodies and charities.

But a major problem is that cooperation between government institutions and non-governmental organisations is non-existent or at a low level. To change this problem into an opportunity for transformation, both government institutions and non-governmental organisations have to employ new thinking.

Albert Einstein, the great scientist and humanitarian, advised that, “you cannot

solve a problem with the same type of thinking that is creating it” and “the measure of intelligence is the ability to change”.

The great Mahatma Gandhi advised: “be the change you want to see because the world will change when you change the way you think about doing things.” The great Michael Jackson similarly advised that “if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change”.

In this regard, it is very encouraging and inspirational to see that President Irfaan Ali is leading the way. In a recent speech to launch the new Master’s Degree in Strategic Development Studies at the University of Guyana, the President emphasised that there has to be new thinking about the current global, regional, national, and local situations so that the many challenges, threats and problems could be changed into opportunities for successfully transforming the nation’s economy and society.

In other words, both government institutions and non-governmental organisations have to become equally responsible for finding the best approaches and methods to ensure that no person or family is left behind. Only a government/nongovernmental partnership can develop open-minded, flexible, balanced and

harmonised perspectives that will accurately visualise how to change the big picture and the details in each region and community.

New thinking by a government/nongovernmental partnership should involve questions such as: “How will we include different points of view and proposals to achieve social justice for every single Guyanese, regardless of their political allegiance, ethnic background, gender, age or economic class? How will we think of and approach things from different angles to see all the connections, patterns and risks?

How should we learn about the weaknesses of previous programmes so that we will get it right this time and achieve equal treatment and access?

What mechanisms should we use to monitor, evaluate and adjust activities to reach that goal?

What things must be done first and how will they be efficiently and effectively implemented?”

In the end, the foundation of ‘One Guyana’ has to be respected for and the enforcement of universal human rights (equal justice, equal opportunity and equal dignity) that are enshrined in Guyana’s Constitution and laws - in every region, neighbourhood, community, school, hospital, factory, farm, office, sports facility and organisation.

“Baddest” global GDP meaning for lowly Guyanese DEAR EDITOR, The one thing I know for sure is that we have oil, Middle Eastern quantities of it. Relatively speaking, of course. After that, things start to fall apart, the mysteries deepen, and the way forward takes on a Milky Way endeavour and appearance.

I hear with jaw dropping (yawning) regularity that we are the best GDP, or the next best, per capita in the world.

It always helps to impress the poor dumb slobs toiling in the trenches of Guyana to throw in a Latin word or two. It has to have substance, possess some Rosetta Stone significance, after all, it is originating from men in Armani suits. Though hidden currently, it is sure to come to light and translate to something meaningful before people drop dead from

starvation in this country. I am delighted to hear, read, have it pounded into my hard head that there is this fabulous GDP calculation, projection, conclusion for Guyana. I am sorry to discover that it is an equation with one side only, a formula with the bitter medicine, fear factor, considerately left out.

It is not political correctness, but a tribute to the slyness, better subtitled as lies, damn lies, from the lying liars around here who tell them.

Because I am still to determine what difference this spectacular GDP means to hourly wages, or the minimum wage (notwithstanding the new $60,000 threshold) workers, renters, pensioners, and shoppers.

For those gifted by the PPP political gods of Guyana with a morsel of charity, more officially marketed as relief or aid packages, including

minimum wage beneficiaries, the relentless spiral of prices did more than obliterate those temporary handouts, it dug a deeper hole for the local working stiffs. I call it negative advancement. In other words, despite presidential and vice-presidential imitations of Alan Greenspan with their rescue runs, there was no soft landing for bottom feeding Guyanese. In fact, they found themselves in the position of furiously bailing themselves out from the inside of a deepening crater; they were always losing ground in the struggle catch up and breakeven (another verbal gimmick enjoying fad status). The bad guys were not one or two, but a virtual rogues gallery of the strangest quintet of villains in Guyana’s history. There was COVID-19, then global supply chain management crisis, then the great Guyanese flood, next that all-

purpose bogeyman cost of living, and, of course, that perennial favourite whipping horse, the PNC. Both the President and the Vice President (who partially made good on his official title) fancied themselves as Santa Claus but in a Goldilocks setting, where everything they touched were either hot or cold. The reviews of the boo birds-more energetically described as naysayers, detractors and traitors-were unsurprisingly muted, misted.

The hot aspect was this PPP Government emphasis on taking public wealth and giving it to the upper brackets in what was slick political leadership rackets.

Privately, it was whispered to be payback for campaign donations. Publicly, and academically, it was the biggest reverse redistribution of wealth to date in (Continued on page 5)

Stop playing politics, let’s work together and govern this country in the best interest of all Guyanese DEAR EDITOR, We here in Guyana have been baptized in a form of politics that is antithetical to our best collective interest.

This form of politics has had variations over the past 56 years. In fact even before independence with the formation of the People’s Progressive Party and later the People’s National Congress local politics was birthed in a particular context which lay the foundation for where we find ourselves today. Politics is the tool that has been created, used, misused, and abused to give persons the pathway to government.

The attitude, beliefs, and values which underpin the operation of our brand of politics have disintegrated over time. As the stakes become higher and the brain drain continues, the behaviour of politicians, voters, and those who lobby the politicians has disintegrated.

A lot of us view politics as a dirty game that no sane person would and should get

involved in as it muddies all those involved. We were taught and we have bought into this perception that politics is more important than governance. We have spent way too much time on politics and very little on the way our country has actually been governed.

Please hear me out. I am not saying that Politics is not important. Though it may be viewed that politics occurs where people disagree about the distribution of goods, benefits, or statuses and have at least some procedures for the resolution of such disagreements, politics has evolved to now mean what we term politricks which is characterised by dishonesty or self-interest, the use of underhand methods to achieve political ends and the use of political power for nefarious means. Politicians are regarded as self-serving people that say anything you want to hear just to get elected and then do the opposite of what voters asked for and expect, therefore tricking them.

In this governmental racket, the poor people’s money was given to the rich, under the umbrella of corporate (private sector) welfare. This was while the real welfare needy, pensioners, peasants, and that undying beast called the proletariat, engage in daily battles to lift themselves by their bootstraps. The problem was that their boots were already pawned. But we do have the biggest and “baddest” GDP in all creation, I remind anyone listening.

Didn’t somebody tell me there is a God? He must have gone shopping; or sleeping on the job.

The cold aspect was that

the Santa Claus President and Vice President gave Guyanese monetary toys that didn’t, couldn’t, last them beyond the Christmas Day giveaways, they faded or fell apart. I chalk that up to hobnobbing too frequently, and too closely, with their incorruptible Communist Chinese comrades, whose products and gifts also succumb quickly to the demands of time and touch.

It is why I love to love (like Tina Charles) this country and its caring, compassionate leaders, and their local GDP Wheel of Fortune. Jeopardy, it is not; more like family feud if you asked me. Nobody did.

You see we spend so much time on politicking and discussing who does politics best and who is better at maneuvering politically that we find very little time to focus on what is really required to move this country forward.

The building of a nation, unity, good governance, social and economic development, and equity.

These things get buried because we are too busy looking at and paying attention to the tricks and maneuvers and the machiavellian moves or lack thereof of so-called politicians.

Where does that leave the rest of society? Where does that leave our future generations?

PPP supporters would very easily say and most believe that the APNU+AFC were unable to fulfill their promises and most APNU+AFC supporters would shout from the rooftops that the PPP is not governing the country in the best interest of all.

Now we have a One Guyana Policy, a policy that only one section of our population is likely to buy into.

Again where does that leave us, where does that leave our future generations?

Where do we go from here?

The first words out of the opposition’s mouth would be to get rid of the PPP they are no good for Guyana. The other side would just as

heartily say we don’t trust nor want to see anyone from the opposition in Government.

There is a famous quote that says: If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. In the same way, if a nation, if a country is divided against itself that nation, that country cannot and will not be able to stand.

So where do we go from here? To some of us, we see our group, our political party advancing, doing well moving forward taking full advantage of all the opportunities that are available and we are feeling good.

To some of us we are seeing our group, our political party not advancing, not doing well, not moving forward, and unable for a myriad of reasons to take full advantage of the opportunities that are available and we do not feel good.

Then there are those of us who really do not care about political parties but cannot understand why we have to struggle so much just to put bread on the table.

Then there are those coming in by the droves from Venezuela, Brazil, Cuba, Russia, the USA, the UK, Canada, China, Barbados, from Syria taking full advantage of our division, utilising all the loopholes that exist because we are too busy fighting each other and playing politics with each other.

Maybe it is time we say enough of the disunity, enough of the fighting, enough of the racism. If there is space for the Barbadian farmers and the Syrians and the Chinese and the Americans and the British and the Venezuelans and now the Saudis, there must be enough space for us as Guyanese to all benefit from the resources available in this country.

I know my message will not be able to resonate with all but to those of you who this message resonates with I challenge you to reach out.

Whether you are Indigenous

or Indian, African or Chinese, European or Portuguese or a mix of all as long as your birth certificate is Guyanese, let us say enough is enough let us help our leaders to understand that we require and demand something different, something bigger than the petty politics that we have seen and have had to live with for the past 5 decades.

Stop playing politics, let’s work together and govern this country in the best interest of all Guyanese.

Going through storage, I thought I take the opportunity to share with the general public this memorabilia item as a remembrance from our history...

Unfortunately, it’s not in pristine condition and silver fishes managed to get to quite a lot of pages

but still readable...

It is my wish that someday any government of the day can allocate a piece of land and erect a museum in Guyana to house British Guiana artefacts...

Then again, I don’t see the possibility of it ever becoming a reality...

However, I hope a glimpse of this literature artefact is well received by all ...

PPP Government must be commended for the Buxton outreach, quick responses DEAR EDITOR, The Prime Minister and eight Government Ministers descended on Buxton in an outreach that attracted more people than the roadside peaceful picketing. It’s a tale of two objectives. Never mind it was a random, reactive act, the Government wants to listen to the people and respond to their needs. The protest where Dr. Hinds was prominent and MP Duncan was cheerleading was apparently meant to stir up animosity and hatred for the Government.

If the Complaints Authority had announced that three Policemen would be charged, why were they still protesting? There have been many people over the years who died in Police custody or

died by accident involving police drivers, and justice was not done. But they did not all resort to roadside terrorism of beating innocent people, lighting fires, looting, and creating fear and mayhem. To have national unity and One Guyana, we have to acknowledge the good of the other side. It cannot always be tactics of “Expose, Oppose and Depose” all the time.

That’s toxic for our poor nation struggling for better days.

When we fight among ourselves, the imperialist corporations are fetching away our oil, gold and other natural resources, while we remain beggars.

I commend those Buxton residents who chose “problem-solving” over

unhelpful and destructive actions meant for political demonisation. And such engagement yielded some good results. The news headline said, “Request fulfilled on the spot! We want our birth certificates, drivers’ licences, passports, tax clearances, TIN numbers, ID cards, NIS benefits, house lots, roads built, connections for water and electricity, requests for information on public projects, and all Government services, etc. in a quick, efficient manner. Let’s follow the Buxton example in all things.All the issues raised at the Buxton forum are not unique to Buxton. They

are universal and reflect every village in Guyana – bad roads, unresponsive Government b u r e a u c r a c i e s , unemployment, bread and justice, better pay, no discrimination, better policing, etc. Most villages that solidly voted for the PPP feel neglected for the longest while, but the Government showed great magnanimity at Buxton.

What is missing is that people need to connect the renegotiation of the oil contracts to give us more money to meet the multitudinous needs of every village.

That’s what we should be peacefully protesting about all over the country. Without renegotiation that will give us more money, when would the other villages’ turn come to get their needs met on the

spot or delivered in half an hour as in Buxton?

People should not begrudge the Buxton folks although they have not voted for the PPP or will never vote PPP. In 2020, the PPP got 83 votes there, while the PNC got 2,342 votes.

All Guyanese must share in the national pie, but all Guyanese must unite together and protest the bad oil contract. I believe if we are united about renegotiation, the Government will appreciate that support and approach the oil companies with that “superpower” given to it by a united Guyana.

The PPP can use that “Buxton approach” to secure mass support for renegotiation. Mr. Norton simply needs to apologise to the nation on behalf of the PNC for the bad contract, and the PPP must say it will honour its solemn election pledge to the people to renegotiate.

It’s our wealth and our country, and we must care.

We are the richest country in Caricom but we live like paupers, and our currency is even lower than Haiti’s. That must change soon. “A people united, cannot be defeated.”

The Alliance For Change (AFC) has signaled that it is preparing to break ranks with the People's National Congress Reform when the Cummingsburg Accord expires at the end of the year and would be looking for a new partner.

The diehards in the PNCR have scoffed at the announcement- likening the AFC to a Judas and blaming the fledgling party for the Coalition's fall from grace.

Whatever might be the reason for the AFC cutting and running, it is the belief of many that the party of Khemraj Ramjattan and Raphael Trotman has no real political future, so whether they go or stay, it will have little impact on the PNCR.

The AFC certainly does not think so and its leader, Ramjattan hinted that they will seek alliances with some of the other small parties.

Coalition politics, though desirable here, has proven to be a very difficult venture. One always got the impression that the end was near for the APNU+AFC Coalition once it was voted out of office.

With no real constituency, it is left to be seen how this party fares going forward. All we know is that it was the AFC's faction of the coalition that helped to sell out this country and is responsible for one of the worst oil contracts in the world.

Good luck to the party that would be so bold to court, engage and marry them.

Woman scammed $500K looking for love on Facebook — alleged third party in “romance scheme” charged An East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident, Jaffon Hinds found himself before the court on Tuesday facing charges for being part of a “romance Scheme” after allegedly robbing a woman of $502,340.

She was looking for love and met a Facebook friend who won her heart but he turned out to be scammer who eventually robbed her, allegedly with the help of Hinds. The Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) investigated the matter and according to a press, the victim’s Facebook boyfriend “promised her a huge package

filled with expensive items” but before she could receive them, the woman had to help out financially with the shipping expenses. She was allegedly instructed to send cash to Jaffon Hinds via Western Union and did so on three occasions. Unfortunately, she never received the “package filled with expensive items” and her Facebook love ghosted her.

SOCU’s investigation led to the arrest of Hinds a resident of 106 Downer Street Grove, (EBD). It is alleged that he acted as a “third party” to rob the woman of the cash

and as a result, he was charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday before Magistrate Zamina Ally and pleaded not guilty to all three charges. Hinds was granted a total bail of $90,000 and is expected to return to court on August 15, 2022.

SOCU in its release stated that head of the unit, Fazil Karimbaksh had warned the public back in April to beware of such schemes. He had pointed out that there was a sharp rise in cases where suspected

What it takes I had known her for many years. She was upright and respectable, having trod the straight and narrow path all her life.

She was God-fearing and old fashioned. You would never find her raising her voice or using expletives. She was soft-spoken and mannerly, dressed decorously at all times and her attire was always suited to the occasion.

Every occasion had its own dress code, in so far as she was concerned and she did not break these selfimposed rules. She ensured that her children had a sound education, were respectful to others and did not break the law or be rude and illmannered.

She mothered four daughters, ensured they all got a secondary school education. None of them opted for university but if they had, she would have supported them. Her daughters were all of independent means but none of them were married.

The old lady’s greatest wish was to have them all married before she passed on.

And while there were many eligible suitors known to her, she did not believe in arranged marriages or even in making introductions for her daughters.

She left the choice of partners to them but she was far from reserved in

expressing her opinions about their choices. As she told me, she expected any future son-in law to have “what it takes.”

Simple things mattered.

For example, she pointed me to a couple who was walking on the left hand side of the road with the woman walking on the outside nearer to the traffic. A gentleman, she explained would always put the woman in the least dangerous side.

I asked her whether class mattered to her in the choice of a suitor for her daughters.

She said class was not a criteria but the family should be decent and respectable.

She did not wish her daughter to end up with a virago for a mother-in-law.

I asked her about the occupation of a suitable suitor. She said so long as the boy worked, it did not matter what he did.

My next question was, “What if he did not work?”

She was firm in making it clear that none of her daughters can be courted by a non-working man. It was simply unthinkable.

I asked her whether she would agree to any of her daughters marrying a minibus driver or conductor.

She nodded in agreement saying that it was honest and hard work.

I asked her what about if a suitor was a thief. ”Not a chance!” she said.

“But what if he is loaded?

What if he can make your daughter comfortable for the rest of her life?”

“Not a chance. Once he is involved in any criminal enterprise, I will not agree.”

“What if the crime had taken place years ago and he was now on the straight and narrow path?”

She answered, “Once a crook, always a crook.” ”What if he is a liar?”

“My daughters would have nothing to do with liars.”

I asked, “What if he is dishonest.”

She said, “No place for a dishonest rascal in my family.”

“What if the suitor is a fraudster?” I asked.

“He belongs in jail, not in our family,” she said.

“But what if he merely rigged an election?” I queried.

The old lady did not answer. She walked away leaving me pondering her failure to answer that last question.

The government and Guyanese people must reject these monkey antics I

n 2018, I went to the parcel section of the post office to post three books to my daughter who was studying in London. Before me, a man had a box being examined when I heard the attendant asked him for proof of address.

The next day, I went to see an attorney Nirvan Singh, the son of my friend, the former chancellor Carl Singh. The lawyer told me for him to file a case against the post office, I must have locus standi, meaning I must be the person affected or get the person who is affected.

The post office in any country will be on the lookout for illegal things being sent abroad. So they examine outgoing and incoming mail. Everything in this life is context.

Because of context, I have done several columns berating the commercial banks for a policy that is

purely asinine and lacks commonsense and which no government should

tolerate.

A bank book with 5 million Guyanese dollars sitting with that sum for over 10 years should not be on the radar of any commercial bank simply because money laundering is the use of financial institutions to make illegally acquired money legal.

Movement of money into the institution without a logical pattern of earning is money laundering. A man sold his property in 2010, put the money in the bank for hard times.

After 10 years why require him to conform to the anti-moneylaundering law when he isn't moving any money

in your bank? The traffic policeman cannot ask the

cycle rider to produce his roads vehicular licence from the GRA. He doesn't use a vehicle. The commercial banks behave as silly as that and an entire nation with an active media landscape and a central government accepts these monkey antics.

Now for monkey antics at the post office. The attendant looked at the three books, searched the pages and accepted them. It only makes sense asking for proof of address if the parcel cannot be searched. What happens then is the police will contact the sender at the address because something prohibited was found in the package.

I quote from my article of Friday, May 25, 2018 titled; “Post office, AFC, magistrates; what a shithole country!” “How did we become like this? How

did this nation become so asinine, moronic and primitive? The Post Office Corporation issued the requirements for posting a parcel overseas – a post office stamp on an envelope not older than three months.

Now we have a letter in this newspaper of Friday, July 9, 2022 in which Mrs. Saudia Ferouz informed the people of a country named Guyana that she wants to send her daughter a birthday card but the post office wants to have the telephone number of the recipient of the card.

That is a sickening invasion of privacy. Why should the post office get the

Jagdeo loses another bid at Full Court to overturn $20M libel judgment

Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo The Full Court; an appeal jurisdiction within the High Court, has once more

refused an application by Vice President (VP)Bharrat Jagdeo to hear his request to set aside or recall the default judgment award of $20 million granted to former Minister of Housing, Annette Ferguson for libel.

Jagdeo had previously lost the libel case to Ferguson, because of his failure to file his defence in keeping with the time limit and rules of the Court. Ferguson had sued Jagdeo over some alleged

slanderous statements he made about her owning house lots and secured $20 million on a default judgment.

VP Jagdeo later appealed the decision before the Full Court, but his request was turned down the first time.

Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George-Wiltshire and Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry failed to agree on allowing his application to be heard. This meant that the original ruling of the previous presiding

judge, Sandra Kurtzious to grant Ferguson a $20 million judgment still stands.

However, the VP did not give up in his quest to have F e r g u s o n ’s j u d g m e n t discarded. Through his attorney, Devindra Kissoon Jagdeo appealed to the Full Court, where two judges usually preside a second time.

Th is time ar o u n d , h e requested that a third judge joins the panel to review his application. He also filed a similar appeal in the Appeal Court.

When the matter came up again before the Chief Justice and Justice SewnarineBeharry on Tuesday, the application was again turned down.

This time, the both justices rejected the

application on the basis that Section 77 of the High Court Act only gives that power to the Chief Justice to grant a request to review an appeal before the Full Court.

Additionally, it was noted that a simultaneous application was filed to Court of Appeal which meant that the Appeal Court (the Higher Court) was seized with jurisdiction to hear the matter and Jagdeo could not have two similar applications before two different Courts. Further, it was pointed out that Jagdeo’s lawyer could provide no authority or legislation to show that the Full Court had the jurisdiction to grant the applications. Kaieteur News understands that given the Full Court’s decision,

Former Minister of Housing, Annette Ferguson Jagdeo’s case will now be pursued before the Court of Appeal. Ferguson had sued Jagdeo over alleged slanderous statements he made about her owning house lots. The statements were published in the Guyana Times newspaper which Ferguson also sued.

Cancer Foundation unmasks ‘fake doctor’

McLennon’s post

Following the Facebook post by the Guyana Cancer Foundation, on Tuesday notifying the public that 27-year-old Mikhail Tadius McLennon is not a doctor and is no longer affiliated with the foundation, the man admitted guilt and quickly apologised to those who were affected by his actions.

Bibi Saeedah Akhtar Hassan, the President/Founder of the foundation on Tuesday morning in a statement explained that McLennon had asked to be a volunteer with the foundation and he was hired.

However, she noted that after McLennon was hired, “persons from the media and others called

to confirm that he is not a doctor.”

Notably, checks made by the foundation revealed that there were no records showing McLennon is registered at Medical Council of Guyana. According to Hassan, she then questioned McLennan about his medical degree and he refused to send a copy of it to her.

CDC to get $117M multi-purpose building A contract was on Tuesday signed at the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) Headquarters to initiate the construction of a Multi-Purpose Building at the Thomas Lands location.

The building will consist of administrative office space, a bond and warehouse, and other response facilities, the Department of Public Information said in a press release.

Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, in remarks at the signing ceremony stated that the facility will be a great asset to disaster risk management countrywide.

The senior government official indicated that this project, which is estimated to be completed in 24 months,

will be done by the book with a long-term focus on response management and mitigation.

His sentiments were echoed by CDC’s Director General (ag), Major Loring Benons. “Over the years, storage and packing of relief items for CDC were done in different locations. We have a warehouse in Region 9 and packing and storage were done in various areas in Georgetown.

The signing of this contact today would not only allow for the centralization of storage, but upon completion it is expected to facilitate easy loading and offloading of supplies, provide adequate space for packing hampers and convenient access to staff and the general public during

emergency response activities for the delivery, packing and uplifting of relief provisions.” the Director General (ag) asserted with pride.

The construction contract is awarded to Avinash Contracting and Scrap Metal Incorporated to the sum of just above G$117 million. Innovative Engineering Consultancy Services has been tasked with supervising the project to ensure all financial deadlines are met.

Representatives from both entities were present to affix their signatures to the contract.

The facility will utilize 6400 square feet of the Commission’s grounds and will culminate the complex upon completion.

GNBS boosts capacity to verify electricity meters

The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has increased its capacity to verify electricity meters submitted by the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) Inc. in a more efficient manner. This is made possible with the acquisition of a modern Electricity test bench

capable of verifying five meters simultaneously.

In a press release, the GNBS said the new piece of equipment was acquired recently from ZERA India –a subsidiary of German Zähler-Eich-und-ReparaturAnstalt (Meter Calibration and Repair Institute). The company on Tuesday (July

12, 2022) facilitated a practical training with Inspectors of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) along with representatives from GPL Inc. on the use of the equipment.

The practical training was preceded by a four-day theoretical session hosted

during the period July 5- 8, 2022 by CENAMEP AIP the National Metrology Center of Panama. The

session titled ‘Introduction to the metrological verification of electricity meters’ was virtually

facilitated by the agency’s representative Mr. Julio Gonzalez.

Govt., Opposition at odds over preliminary matters in move towards constitutional reform

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall SC The Government of Guyana said it will not allow the current impasse at the level of the parliamentary committee established to initiate the process to bring about constitutional reform to stop the work from being

accomplished.

This was expressed by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall SC even as he sought to address some of the concerns raised over the current state of the

consultation happening at the level of the committee.

Major changes to the constitution require a twothird majority in Parliament for passage. The PPP/C enjoys a one-seat majority, which would not get it anyway to make the type of changes to the constitution it promised without the support from the opposition.

Besides, when it was in government, the Coalition faced similar recalcitrance from the PPP/C opposition on matters of constitutional reform. In fact, the PPP/C had boycotted efforts to move the process forward.

Friday last called out opposition members for their continuous absence from meetings to discuss matters related to constitutional reform, accusing them of deliberately hampering the process. Datadin also

revealed that the opposition MPs had failed to submit proposals in relation to constitutional reform. In a video broadcast shared on Facebook, the Attorney General who is also chairperson of the parliamentary committee

explained that despite what appears to be attempts by the opposition to stymie the process, the government is determined to keep its campaign promise to bring about constitutional reform.

Nandlall explained that the draft bill to establishing a constitutional commission has already been prepared and is set to be tabled in the National Assembly before it enters a period of recess in August. He noted that the opposition has been given since April 22 to present a proposal “in support of or counter to” the government’s draft bill.

From page 3 Lowe who is an Economic and Youth Policy Advisor at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, was at the time responding to March 2022 report issued by

the Bank of Guyana (BoG) which documented the country’s performance in the first three months of the year.

The report found that the State now owes an additional US$124.4 million in debt,

bringing the total to US$3.248 billion.

According to the economic advisor, the government must be wary about its quest to borrow huge sums of money since it may not be able to

sustain in the long run.

Lowe noted that while Guyana has always been borrowing, new avenues have opened up for the country to take out more loans because of its projected [Gross

Domestic Product] growth.

He explained however that the GDP projections often paint a picture that is totally different from the reality of the country. Added to this, Lowe noted the Government has not made any provisions to repay its debt. “The NRF was supposed to have reserve saving in the event of an emergency but the government has made it a point to drain those funds, so we don’t really have a back up savings to help us offset the debts in any case.

Therefore we run the risk of not being able to service the loans and drive up the interests on these loans if things turn for the worse on the world markets… Then Guyana can eventually find itself in a situation like Venezuela,” he stressed Further, the economist said Guyana’s mounting debt has the potential to expose the country to a number of other risks. With the cost of living already slated to increase, he noted that the last thing citizens need is to be saddled with more debts.

He explained “The government keeps borrowing massive sums for infrastructure and other types of projects … but while infrastructure development is good, the government seems to have forgotten about its people...This is evident in fact that in this year’s budget, the government put aside a mere $5 billion for cost of living mitigation out of a budget $552 billion. Guyanese are already grappling heavy cost of living but as the debt rises, it is the taxpaying public that will ultimately carry the burden…”

“These risks have the potential of driving up the cost of living and increase inflation which means the price for goods and service can also go up by great amounts…” Lowe said.

Meanwhile Russiantrained economist and civil activist, Ramon Gaskin shared similar views on the country’s mounting debt. He noted the increased debt only s p e a k s t o t h e mismanagement of the funds by the Government.

“We have a government that has no proper plan in place to service the debt we already have, yet they keep borrowing and piling heaps of debts upon the heads of the Guyanese people. What I believe should have been done is the government should have taken some of the oil earning and put it to service the debt we already have instead of creating more debt for the people to pay,” Gaskin explained. He

lamented that the Government’s spending is spiraling out of control and should be better managed.

“We are borrowing to buy things from flash drives to fix roads and a host of other matters that in my view makes absolutely no sense…If we continue to go down this road, the country could be faced with insurmountable challenges in years to come,” Gaskin added.

The Bank of Guyana (BoG) in its quarterly report noted “the total stock of public debt, which comprises both external and domestic debt, increased by 4.0 percent or US$124.4 million to US$3,248.6 million compared to the endDecember 2021 position.”

It was explained that the domestic debt stock increased to G$389.469 billion or US$1.868 million during the review period, on account of increased issuance of treasury bills for Central Government’s budgetary financing. At the end of December 2021, the total domestic debt stood at G$361.513 mill i o n o r US$1.734 million. The Bank noted that domestic debt service payments decreased by 17.4 percent, as a result of lower principal repayments on treasury bills, particularly, the 182-day bill.

“Total domestic principal and interest payments were G$24,004 million and G$325.2 million, respectively. Domestic debt service payments accounted for 44.8 percent of government revenue.”

Notably, during the first three months of the year, the stock of external debt decreased to US$1,383 million on account of declines in both multilateral and bilateral debt stock during the review period.

This was attributed to higher debt service payments to both categories of creditors, BoG said.

Meanwhile, external debt service payments, which accounted for some two percent of export earnings, increased by 3.3 percent, mainly due to increased principal payments to both multilateral and bilateral creditors, and higher interest payments to multilateral creditors.

“Reserve money fell by 3.7 percent while broad money grew by 1.3 percent during the first quarter of 2022. The former reflected a decline in net foreign assets of the Bank of Guyana while the latter was on account of expansions in net domestic credit and other items (net),” the report explains.

According to Bhulai, “Amaila, based on the calculations I have done so far is the most expensive energy option that we have and will turn out to be more expensive than what they plan to pay now. It’s a bad deal so Mr. Jagdeo is very illadvised and I don’t know for what reason he is pursuing this thing but it doesn’t make any sense on a costing model.”

Four Star Providence Hyatt targets middle & upper-class corporate clientele — Summary Guyana’s internationally branded hotel chain is expanding with the latest coming closer to fruition being the Hyatt International Hotel to be constructed at New Providence on the East Bank Demerara.

A completed project summary has since been presented to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dated May last.

The new hotel is being developed

by SIR Investments Ltd to develop a Hyatt Place Hotel to be located at 2441 Block 3 Providence, EBD in the vicinity of the Guyana National Stadium and the Amazonia Mall, bounded b y t h e Te x i l a A m e r i c a n University compound and the Qualfon Guyana Campus.

As outlined in the document, the hotel occupies 2.733 acres of a main five-acre parcel which is accessed off “Red” road. The rectangular site with a northsouth orientation is presently provided with boundary walls and is essentially flat with minimal vegetative cover and has an established main drainage course along the roadside boundary.

“The hotel which has six floors is developed utilising the prototypical concepts provided by the HYATT Corporation.”

According to the document, the essential provisions are to serve 136 guest rooms on five upper floors with the Ground floor providing lobby, and lounges. Additionally, there will be dining

facilities, business centre, and a bar in addition to meeting rooms and a gymnasium.

Under the arrangement, the Hyatt Hotel chain reached a franchise agreement with SIR Investments Guyana to bring “the first upscale brand four-star Hyatt Place to Guyana to boost the tourism and hospitality sector but is specifically geared toward expanding the brand’s footprint.”

It was noted that as international travel demand continues to ramp up and the hotel sector is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, and as such, Hyatt Place Georgetown Demerara will be positioned to serve the needs of Guyana’s middle to upperclass corporate clientele, business corporate and leisure travellers.

Located at Providence on the East Bank of Demerara, the facility will be situated 22 miles away from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, while Georgetown, the commercial centre will be only 15 minutes away.

building was designed and engineered using green engineering technology in keeping with the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) with the developmental budget for the project being approximately US$35M and is financed through a private bank loan.

The implementation of the hotel facility will follow the standard four-phased approach used in the construction sector namely design, pre-construction, construction phase and operations.

It was noted that as with many construction projects, the conceptual design for the Hyatt Place Hotel was an iterative process with the goal of balancing cost, quality and timely delivery of the project.

GuySuCo cries foul as Uitvlugt workers go on strike

In a release, the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) expressed “grave concern in relation to the strike action taken by the workers...” According to GuySuCo, with the factory having only ground for 14 hours in the First Crop due to a mechanical failure, grinding operations for the Second Crop was set to commence Tuesday; however, disappointingly, the factory workers decided

to proceed on strike.

The Sugar Corporation said management had earlier addressed the issue of holiday with pay at a meeting held on May 31, 2022 with the GAWU’s Union Representative attached to the Estate. At that meeting, the Estate Manager informed the Union Representatives that for HWP to be facilitated, a factory will have to be established which requires at one week of grinding. “The estate is fully ready to commence grinding operations for the Second Crop, in pursuit of a sugar production target of 10,800 metric tonnes (MT).

Guyana will look to intensify diplomatic relations with France - PM Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips said that as Guyana pursues its low carbon economy with the new Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, it will look to intensify its 50-year-old diplomatic relations with France.

The Prime Minister, who delivered remarks at a reception in honour of France’s National Day on Monday evening at the Georgetown Club, said that high on the agenda would be climate change, an area where the two countries share common concerns. He lauded France for its commitment to combatting climate change and the initiatives taken to address the adverse effects of global warming. He added that Guyana is also committed to a low carbon economy through its Low Carbon Development Strategy.

“Guyana and France recognise the magnitude of flattening the curve of climate change through the development of strategies that have sustainable development at their core. Like France, Guyana is committed to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals in which our people are central to the policies we develop,” Phillips said according to a Department of Public Information release.

In praising the similarities between the two countries, the Prime Minister related the

Obtaining all essential construction permits from the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Central Housing and Planning Authority was also a crucial step in this procedure (CH&PA). The duration of this phase is expected to take five months.

Detailing the various aspects of the project, expected to last for some 100 years, it

was noted that initially, the works will involve site development activities such as removing all vegetation, plants and small trees from the site where the hotel will be constructed as well as sub-grade excavation.

“All internal and external reinforced concrete drains will be built during this stage and allowing the plot to be backfilled to the necessary building levels.”

Approximately 40,000 cubic yards of white sand will be required to bring the site up to design grade during these works and as a result, sand trucks and small wheel loaders (bobcats) will be common on the job site

during this phase.

Construction Phase “This phase is planned to last for two months. The hotel will be 152,550 square feet (225 feet (L) x 113 feet (W) x 6 storeys) and will utilize materials consistent with international standards and specifications including but not limited to mass and reinforced concrete, concrete blocks, bricks, pavers, glass, timber, structural steel, plastic and composite materials.”

The sub-structure and superstructure works will commence in this phase simultaneously with the external works.

It is anticipated that during Construction 250 to 300 persons would be employed, 95 percent of which are expected to be Guyanese nationals.

It is expected to have the building completed in February 2024, with the duration of this phase expected to be twenty months. With regards the hotel's operation, this will entail the services provided by the 136 guest room options, disability outfitted rooms, restaurant and bar, meeting rooms, social lounge, fitness centre, pools, internet and communication links, room service and guest laundry and spacious parking spaces.

Bartica man found dead next to motorbike Region Seven police suspect that Clive Drakes, 53, a resident of Half Mile Potaro Road, Bartica, Region Seven who on Monday was found dead along the 14 Mile Trail might have lost control of his motorcycle and crashed.

The body of Drakes was found during the early morning hours on the trail next to his motorcycle. Kaieteur News understands that Drakes might have been returning home from a trip to one of the mines in the area. It was initially alleged that police had given the permission for them to uplift his body from the scene.

However, Commander of the District Dion Moore, related to Kaieteur News that this is not true and ranks were sent to the scene to conduct the necessary investigations.

Drakes' remains bore injuries to his face and body leading investigators to believe that he might have died in an accident. They suspect that he might have lost control of his

Sri Lanka President flees country on military jet (BBC NEWS) Sri Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled the country on a military jet, amid mass protests over its economic crisis.

The 73-year-old arrived in the capital of the Maldives, Male, at around 03:00 local time (22:00 GMT), the BBC understands. Mr. Rajapaksa's departure ends a family dynasty that has ruled Sri Lanka for decades.

He had been in hiding after crowds stormed his residence on Saturday. The president had earlier pledged to resign on Wednesday 13 July. His brother, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, has also left the country, sources have told the BBC. He is said to be heading to the US. As news of the president's departure filtered through, noisy celebrations broke out among demonstrators at Galle Face Green, the main protest site in the capital city, Colombo.

On Tuesday evening, there were already thousands of people massing at the park, awaiting the president's resignation. Sri Lankans blame President Rajapaksa's administration for their worst economic crisis in decades. Woman succumbs to COVID-19; 184 new cases detected An unvaccinated 79year-old woman from Region Seven, who contracted the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, died on Sunday.

This is according to the Ministry of Health, which reported yesterday that as a result of this, the country's COVID-19 death toll has moved to 1,263.

Via its daily COVID19 dashboard, the Ministry recorded 184 new cases, taking the total number of confirmed cases in Guyana to 68,409.

The dashboard data shows that five patients are admitted into the COVID19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 34 persons are in institutional isolation, 779 in home isolation and five in institutional isolation.

To date, a total of 66,328 persons have recovered from the virus.

The Committee was appointed for the purpose of the continually reviewing the effectiveness of the working of the Constitution and making periodic reports there on to the National Assembly, with proposal for reform as necessary. To assist in its work, the Committee also has the power to co-opt experts or enlist the aid of other persons of appropriate expertise, whether or not such experts or other persons are members of the National Assembly.

On Monday, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo related that negotiations with China Railway First Group have been terminated, with the Government of Guyana shifting its focus on the Gas to Energy project.

Jagdeo, at the sidelines of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference related, “We have to go back to the drawing board and then possibly retender at some point in time at the future.”

Notably, the VP said that the administration is fixed on securing another BOOT arrangement.

The Amaila Falls project was planned to generate some 165 Megawatts of electricity to the national grid. China Railway had already been awarded the contract through the National Procurement and tender Administration Board (NPTAB), however the contractor had as late as April 22, last, written to the government “saying that they are having a hard time doing the BOOT contract and they want to shift to an EPC plus finance” option instead.

The Chinese bid, he said, had committed to 7.7 Kwh. The project was estimated to cost some US$750 million, which would have been repaid to the contractor over the 20 years period that the country would have been buying power.

Listed under qualification, it was stated that McLennon has a degree in medicine, diploma in theatre arts and a certificate in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher.

Following the statement by the foundation, many persons on social media platforms reposted it questioning why the foundation did not confirm

whether McLennon was indeed a medical personnel.

McLennon later took to his Facebook page and made a statement in which he admitted that he was wrong and acknowledged, “I made a huge mistake and I would at least try to explain my side.”

He explained that he started the University of Guyana (UG) in 2016 to become a medical doctor. It was stated that due to financial constraints, he had to drop out. “I did try everything else to make my dream a reality, some of which I’m not so proud of, but when it did not work out, I was too embarrassed to tell some of my closest friends and family of my situation,” he added.

However, he noted becoming a doctor was still his passion, and in his heart, “I am a doctor because that’s my passion so I did insert myself in circumstances which allowed me more knowledge in this field even if it was not in the class rooms.” McLennon then added that he know he went too far by claiming or introducing himself as a doctor and as such, he apologised. In closing he said, “I do not know where I will go from here but my aim is to the top. I’m only human and I’m still a work in progress.”

Derrick John elected new NTC Chairman Moraikobai Toshao, Derick John was on Monday elected to serve as Chairman of the National Toshaos Council (NTC).

The elections were held on the first of a five-day NTC conference being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), Liliendaal, the Department of Public Information reported. Two persons tied for the position of deputy chair, and this will be sorted later by the executive.

Addressing To s h a o s a n d s e n i o r councillors following the election, the new NTC Chair assured the village representatives that they will be well represented.

“I can assure you that we will do the best of our ability, because that will be our main agenda, your concern, your rights, is our priority,” John said. He emphasised that much work needs to be done, especially since the lifespan of the executive is less than two years.

“Therefore, there is a need for all of us to be

prepared to take the agenda forward. We have a lot of work to do, and as we will be sitting for the next four days, we will hear concerns, problems, challenges, issues and therefore, we will have to be the driving force, working along with the government, trying to resolve most of these issues,” John said.

Noting that confidence was entrusted in the elected members, John asserted, “I believe that if we can work as a team, we can achieve, and we will be able to bring to realisation a change in the lives of our Indigenous

brothers and sisters right across this beautiful country of Guyana.”

The council is a semiautonomous body comprising all Toshaos in Guyana. The 20-member executive committee includes a chairman, vice c h a i r, s e c r e t a r y a n d treasurer. The executive body is installed every three years during the annual NTC Conference, after the regions elect their members to serve on the council. The annual NTC conference was not held for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An explanation is needed for this financial conundrum DEAR EDITOR, In a recent article, captioned, ‘Without renegotiation, Exxon contract ties Guyana to meagre share until oil is exhausted…’ (KN July 6, 2022), Mr. Phillip Rietema, EEPGL’s Vice President and Business Services Manager, stated, “With the plans we have in place out to 2025 will take investments north of $6 trillion”.

Undoubtedly, this is indeed a significant amount of investment, which is more than one thousand times the size of Guyana’s GDP (G$5.47B in 2020). This, therefore, signals a high degree of business confidence in the expected profitability that EEPGL has in the Guyanese oil sector.

More importantly, at a price of $65.00 per barrel of oil, and given the successful rate of oil discoveries, this implies that Guyana has somewhere around 92.3 billion barrels of oil.

Thanks, Mr. Rietema for letting Guyanese know the value of the oil assets we own. Furthermore, given that

all direct and indirect costs are covered and can be recouped over several years, please, therefore, assist us in getting a better deal, as 14.5 percent of total revenue is an obvious inequity.

Meanwhile, Editor, Mr. Rietema’s statement that, ‘We (EEPGL COMPANY) will continue to invest greater than the returns we receive and we will continue to do so for many years.’ This needs clarification.

In fact, this statement by Mr. Rietema is inconsistent with the operations of a financially viable company, for the total revenue in any successful business must be greater than the total cost of the investment; otherwise, the shareholders will be dissatisfied with the management, who will most likely be given marching orders.

In the circumstances, Editor, please ask Mr. Rietema to explain this financial conundrum.

DEAR EDITOR, I read the GuySuCo advertisement appearing in the July 10, 2022 newspapers where the company spoke about its need to purchase articulated tractor. I was educated or would say miseducated it seems.

I was around when GuySuCco used Cameco tractors. I remember we used

to describe time as lazy and thirsty.

They hardly worked and used a lot of fuel. But as a concerned observer, I shall be grateful if GuySuCo could answer the following questions: 1. Is it true that Game tractor company has not made a profit in the last three years?

2. Is it also true that the Game tractors are used for haulage and not tillage?

3. Also, isn’t it true that since the late 1990s, GuySuCo Board and Management banned the use of articulated tractors for tillage?

Editor, I was around the sugar industry in those times.

I remember we had many renowned engineers and personnel who studied this matter.

I have to wonder why we are going back to a failed past? Is there more than what meets the eye?

‘Don’t fall ill’: Sri Lanka doctors warn of drug shortage COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (AP) - Don’t fall ill or get into accidents: That’s the advice doctors in Sri Lanka are giving patients as the country’s economic crisis leaves its health care system short of drugs and other vital supplies.

The South Asian island nation lacks the money to pay for basic imports like fuel and food, and medicine is also running out. Such troubles threaten to undo its huge gains in public health in recent decades.

Some doctors have turned to social media to try to get donations of supplies or the funds to buy them. They’re also urging Sri Lankans living overseas to help out. So far there’s no sign of an end to the crisis that has thrust the country into an economic and political meltdown.

That means 15-year-old Hasini Wasana might not get the medicine she needs to protect her transplanted kidney. Diagnosed with a

kidney ailment as a toddler, she got a transplant nine months ago and needs to take an immune suppressant every day for the rest of her life to prevent her body from rejecting the organ.

Hasini’s family is depending on donors to help now that her hospital can no longer provide the Tacrolimus tablets that she received for free until a few weeks ago. She takes eight and a half tablets a day and the cost adds up to more than $200 a month, just for that one medicine.

“We are being told (by the hospital) that they don’t know when they will have this tablet again,” said Ishara Thilini, Hasini’s older sister.

The family sold their home and Hasini’s father got a job in the Middle East to help pay for her medical treatment, but his income is barely enough.

Cancer hospitals, too, are struggling to maintain stocks of essential drugs to ensure

uninterrupted treatment.

“Don’t get ill, don’t get injured, don’t do anything that will make you go to a hospital for treatment unnecessarily,” said Samath Dharmaratne, president of the Sri Lanka Medical Association.

“That is how I can explain it; this is a serious situation.”

Dr. Charles Nugawela, who heads a kidney hospital in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, said his hospital has kept running thanks to the largesse of donors but has resorted to providing medicine only to patients whose illness has advanced to the stage where they need dialysis.

Nugawela worries the hospital might have to put off all but the most urgent surgeries because of a shortage of suture materials.

The Sri Lanka College of Oncologists gave a list of drugs to the Health Ministry that “are very essential, that all hospitals have to have all

the time so that we could provide cancer treatment without any interruption,” said Dr. Nadarajah Jeyakumaran, who heads the college. But the government is having a hard time providing them, he said.

And it’s not just medicine.

Patients having chemotherapy are susceptible to infections and can’t eat normally but hospitals don’t have enough food supplements, Jeyakumaran said.

The situation threatens to bring on a health emergency at a time when the country is still recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. Hospitals lack drugs for rabies, epilepsy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Labs don’t have enough of the reagents needed to run full blood count tests. Items like suture material, cotton socks for surgery, supplies for blood transfusions, even cotton wool and gauze are running short.

According to GAWU the workers became more upset after the Corporation’s CEO entered the estate compound without even seeking to ascertain the reason/s for the workers picketing.

They said they felt disrespected that the seniormost executive who had previously professed his commitment to the workers could not have even asked of their difficulty.

Only last week this newspaper reported that after being out of operations for over three months due to mechanical issues to one of its critical parts, the Uitvlugt Sugar Factory was expected to be back in full operation

this week. However, industry insiders h a d t o l d t h i s newspaper at the time that the estate could struggle to find field and factory workers. While the factory was down, a number of the workers were urged to seek alternative jobs. Some were also offered part-time jobs outside of the industry.

“It might be difficult to get some of those folks to come back to the industry,” a source close to GuySuCo told this newspaper. Asked about this Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said quite the opposite, assuring: “there is enough work force to get the operation going again.

There are indeed enough workers who will resume work when the facility is opened.”

He added that with the factory in the process of opening, it would certainly boost sugar production in the country.

When this factory was closed only two estates, Blairmont and Albion were in operation. Not answering directly how much the absence of the Uitvlugt factory not being in operation would have contributed to the shortfall of sugar production in the country, the minister related that now with it slated to be opened, “we will have more production and sugar be produced.”

The Corporation last year produced 30,865MT less of sugar when compared with 2020. Based on a report, GuySuCo’s pre-audited production stood at 58,025MT of sugar in 2021 compared to 88,890MT in 2020.

Despite the significant shortfall, the Corporation had said it met all the needs of the local market for 2021.

It was explained that the shortfall was a result of the loss of some 35 percent of the standing cane during the 2nd Crop of 2021 due to the flood.

“At Albion, where 50 percent of the production was programmed to be made, the mortality rate for the standing canes planned to be harvested for the 1st Crop of 2022 is estimated at 80 percent due to the floods.

On the Berbice Estates where more than 77 percent of the production is made, the rainfalls in 2021 were 72 percent more than the previous year,” GuySuCo detailed, while noting that it drained some 4.5 million tonnes of water off the land daily during the 65-day flood.

The ailing sugar corporation has seen, over the years, a continuous decline in performance in terms of production but has seen billions of dollars from

the nation’s coffers being plugged annually into the industry. In its Mid-Year R e p o r t l a s t y e a r, t h e Government had acknowledged that the sugar industry continues to decline. In the financial report, the Ministry of Finance said that at the end of the first half of 2021, GuySuCo produced 29,650 tonnes of sugar.

“This performance reflects the record high levels of rainfall, which resulted in waterlogged soils, particularly at the Albion Estate, and strike action that resulted in over 5,600 man-days being lost,” the Mid-Year Report indicated.

As such, it was emphasised that the sugar industry declined by 22.4 percent when compared to the same period in 2020.

Some of the reasons indicated were a 30 percent mortality of mature cane at Albion Estate, 10 percent at Uitvlugt and five percent at Blairmont due to the floods.

Another 15,000 tonnes of sugar in the second crop were also expected to be lost, based on the Report.

It should be noted that for last year alone, GuySuCo received over $6 billion from the National Treasury for its operations and this year, it received a further $6B in the budget.

Arjoon fought hard to defeat Trinidadian Josie Thong in the Girls Under-13 final, which went the full five sets.

She lost the first set 8-11, but rebounded to win the next two 11-9, 11-9. Thong

then won 11-6 to square the match and it was down to the final match to decide the outcome.

Despite a shaky start, Arjoon battled to eventually win 11-9 and take the title.

Guyana claimed Gold in the Boys Under-17 division when countrymen Verwey and Michael Alphonso c l a s h e d w i t h Ve r w e y claimed the win.

After losing the first set 10-12, Verwey rebounded with excellent play to eventually beat Alphonso 11-3, 11-7, 11-6.

The talented Wiltshire proved his class with a tactical masterclass against the number two seed, Barbadian Darien Benn. He beat his opponent 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 to take the gold.

In the Girls Under-19 final, Kirsten Gomes fought hard, but had to settle for silver, going down to Barbadian Sumairaa Suleman in a five-set thriller, 7-11, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9.

Tour de France: Magnus Cort wins disrupted 10th stage after delay BBC Sport - Magnus Cort pipped Nicholas Schultz in a photo finish to win a disrupted 10th stage of the Tour de France after climate activists forced a 10-minute delay in Megeve.

The race was paused 36km from the finish as the protesters sat on the road, with one of them wearing a Tshirt saying, "We have 989 days left".

The activists were eventually removed by police.

In a thrilling finale, Denmark's Cort surged past Schultz to narrowly win.

After three years of being kept apart by a combination of Covid-19 protocols, squad rotation and availability, England were able to put five of their top six from the 2019 World Cup triumph back together – with recently retired skipper Eoin Morgan the only absentee.

Cricket Gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana

Demerara Cricket Club's compact opener Jadon Campbell is the latest youth to benefit from Project Cricket Gear for Young and Promising Cricketers in Guyana.

The talented batter was recently selected to represent Guyana in the upcoming Regional U-17 Tournament to be held in Trinidad.

Campbell, who is also a wicketkeeper, thanked the initiative, a joint venture by Kishan Das of the USA and Anil Beharry of Guyana.

“I want to maintain the rich history of my club and follow in the footsteps of Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks, Roger Harper, Travis Dowlin and many others,” Campbell added.

A a r o n B e h a r r y, a representative of the project, stated that the partnership is please to help young and talented cricketers in Guyana.

“This initiative is to help identify and nurture young talent and at the same time encourage them to educate themselves,” Beharry added.

Total cricket related items collected so far: $170,000 cash, two trophies, eleven cricket boots, seventeen pairs of batting

pads, nineteen bats, thirteen pairs of batting gloves, nineteen thigh pads, one wicket keeping pad, one arm guard, six cricket bags and two helmets. In addition to the above, $600,000 worth in gear was donated by Sheik Mohamed, former National wicket keeper/batsman.

To date, thirty-seven young players from all three counties of Guyana have already benefited from three junior gear bag, two trophies, one arm guard, thirteen bats, one box, two helmets, ten pairs of cricket shoes, nine pairs of batting pads, one bat rubber and eleven pairs of batting gloves.

In addition, two clubs in the Pomeroon area benefited from two used bats.

Pomeroon, Leguan and Wa k e n a m C r i c k e t Committees and Cotton Tree Die Hard also received one box of red cricket balls each while RHCCCC received two, fifteen white cricket shirts, one pair of junior batting pads, one pair of wicket keeping gloves and a set of stumps and bails.

Cricket related items, used or new, will be distributed free of cost to young and promising cricketers in Guyana. Skills,

discipline and education are important characteristics of the recipients. Talent spotting is being done across the country and club leaders will also assist to identify talent. Progressive and well managed clubs will also benefit.

Clear Waters powering Everest CC campers

The annual Everest Cricket Club (ECC) live-in cricket camp is back after a 2year's absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The fiveday camp which begins today, Wednesday July 12, is catering for 40 eager associate members who have signed up for a cricketing experience that will change the way they see the beautiful game.

The unique cricket academy-style camp which is being held under the theme, “Prepare today for a better tomorrow,” will see the young cricketers between the ages of 9 and 19 being exposed to indoor and outdoor events associated with being a professional cricketer.

On the outside, the campers will go through cricket drills including warm up, cool down, batting, bowling and fielding under the guidance of camp leader, Saheed Mohamed and camp coach, Travis Mohamed. The indoor sessions will seek to widen their knowledge of the game with modules such as captaincy, field placing, careers in and around cricket and discipline.

When the camp whistle is blown on the opening day, there will be welcome remarks

by President of ECC and the Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, representatives of the

Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), the coaches and camp mother, Christine Oudkerk.

Over the course of the camp, there will be presentations from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Narine Singh on the importance of core exercise, health and fitness and Police Commander Orin Porter on the significance of discipline.

There will also be motivational speeches by cricket administrator, Shaun Massiah, senior national player Akshaya Persaud and international super stars, Keemo Paul and Gudakesh Motie who were all successful youth players.

The live-in camp is a calendar event for the prestigious cricket club for which the executives and members take pride in organizing and executing.

The success of the camp could not have been possible without the support of corporate Guyana. On Tuesday, Managing Director of Clear Waters, Ricky Lucknauth handed over 20 cases of bottled water to President Nadir at the Camp street club.

Keen competition in battle for latter stages Men's Singles-This year's GBTI competition had fierce battles in the Men's open category.

The new generation of juniors are beginning to make shockwaves in the draw by pushing the veterans through long gruelling matches. In the round of 16s Benjettan Osborne fought off the big groundstrokes of Ricky Romanscindo by relying on his ability to create sharp angles and move the younger player off the court. Osborne won the match 6-3 / 3-6 / 6-0.

Gerald Scotland took out veteran player Harry Panday 6-1 / 6/3, while Saevion David-Longe took out the junior lefty Isaiah Cambridge 7-6(4) / 6-3.

The quarter-finals had suspenseful action. Donnie Anderson defeated Harvey Stoll 6-3 / 6-0, while defending champion Miguel Garcia dismissed the former champion, Jonathan Fagundes 6-0 / 6-0. The anticipated clash of the former junior prodigy, Gavin Lewis, and the rising junior star, Gerald Scotland, lived up to its expectation.

The two traded heavy topspin groundstrokes, spectacular volleys and intense rallies. However, Lewis edged Scotland out in the first set. There appeared to be the turning of the tide in the second set when Scotland raced to a 4-1 lead and an ailing Lewis had to take a medical timeout due to an injury during the set point. Lewis slowly crept back into the game and fought off two set points on Scotland's serve which took the second set into a tiebreak.

Namilco on board with RHTYSC Cricket Academy and annual magazine - Support pours in for cricket development programme Long time sponsor of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club MS, Namilco, on Friday last came on board to support the club to host its annual cricket academy and also to publish its first full coloured magazine. The company Managing Director Bert Sukhai handed over a sponsorship cheque to RHTYSC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at a simple presentation ceremony at the company's Agricola based head office.

The club during the month of August would be publishing a forty page full coloured magazine to highlight its major achievements over the last five years and also to promote its list of promising players which includes Kevlon Anderson, Kevin Sinclair, Jonathan Rampersaud, Jermey Sandia, Sheneta Grimmond, Shakabi Gajnabi, Junior Sinclair, Matthew Pottaya, Romesh Bharrat and Christopher Deroop.

The magazine, which would be edited by Foster and the club public relations committee headed by Rampersaud, would be distributed free of cost across Guyana, the Caribbean and North America as part of a massive outreach programme. The magazine would also feature the club's main achievements over the years since its formation in 1990 by three times Commonwealth Youth Service Awardee, the St Francis Youth Club, while several major developmental programmes would also be unveiled.

The RHTYSC over the years has won a total of one hundred and one cricket tournaments at all levels while it has produced one hundred and eleven players for either,

Berbice, Guyana and the West Indies. The club currently has four players in the national under19 team playing in Trinidad and has the only fully activated female team in the country.

Namilco, which sponsors the club's strong under 21 and first division teams, also announced that it would be assisting the club's annual cricket academy with one hundred and ten school bags as part of the teams Say Yes to Education programme. The bags along with educational materials would be handed out to every youth attending the two weeks cricket academy

The academy would be conducted by a battery of cricket coaches, while several senior players of the club would make special appearances.

Foster along with senior executives of the club, are also slated to conduct a series of classroom lectures for the students.

confidence in the club and hailed Namilco as one of the RHTYSC success stories. Managing Director of the company Bert Sukhai stated that Namilco was pleased to be associated with the RHTYSC and announced that sponsorship for the two teams would be renewed shortly for the next year, while new uniforms for the first division teams would be handed over as well.

Meanwhile, the club continues to attract support from the general public as it streams ahead with plans for the cricket academy and Grade Six Summer Camp. Friends

of the club including Minister Colin C r o a l , D o n n a To d d , S h i e k Mohamed, Canadian Surplus, Food for the Poor, Flavio Rose, Arlington Hazel, Joel Pike, Dirk Figueira, Indira Jafferally, Kevin Sinclair, Kevin Darlington, Roy Hanoman, Keith Hicks and Andy Lampkins are among dozens who have assisted the organising committee.

Outstanding members of both programmes would carry home several prizes including bicycles, tablets, food hampers, educational grants, household items and kitchen utensils.

Windies Masters continue their winning streak Dhaniram brothers lead WI to victory

indies Masters are peaking at the right time having lost all 4 of their practice ODI games played earlier against Wales (2), England (1) & India (1).

India won the toss and elected to take first strike hoping to possibly to grind the WI Masters into the ground since everyone was playing their second back to back matches and West Indies had already played 5 matches in the last 7 days.

India started off very conservatively and ended up

losing 3 wickets for 48 runs at the first 15 overs water break.

India then dug in for the next session where they added around 70 runs whilst losing the solitary wicket of former Indian test cricketer, Sanjeev Sharma for a polished 31.

The Windies Masters then regrouped and took regular wickets during the final session to have them all out for 212 in the final over.

Both Fakir Dungaria and Tushar Jhaveri contributed 49 each to take India to a respectable score. Fareed Hosein who took 3 wickets

for 23 runs in 5 overs had excellent support from Sunil Dhaniram who had 2 for 33 off his allotted 9 overs.

Windies lost an early wicket when Sadeo was adjudged LBW for 8 with the score on 13. Sudesh Dhaniram then joined the centurion from the previous day, Ishwar Maraj and batted very sensibly putting together a 76 run partnership before Maraj was dismissed just 5 runs short of his half century.

The Dhaniram brothers then came together for a

wonderful partnership of 86.

Just when it looked like they would have taken it home for the Windies, Sunil danced down the wicket to be stumped out for a well played 29. Sudesh was still on 81 and coasting to his century which he got before WIndies surpassed the Indian total in the 41st over. Sudesh finished on an unbeaten 108 from 104 deliveries laced with 20 boundaries.

West Indies were to meet England in a virtual final yesterday. Wales were to meet India in the other match.

FIDE Chess Olympiad… Indian High Commissioner

urges GCF players to make nation proud High Commissioner of India to Guyana H.E. Dr. K. J. Srinivasa on Monday, July 11 , e n g a g e d G u y a n a ' s delegation for this year's FIDE Chess Olympiad. He took time out of his busy schedule to commend the players for their dedication to the sport and share advice and encouragement for their trip to Chennai, India where this year's event will be hosted.

High Commissioner Srinivasa said to the players “make your nation proud” as they go on to represent their country against the best players from around the world.

Embassy to secure their Indian visas.

The High Commissioner added as well that India is the birthplace of chess, with the game originally being known as chaturanga and used to craft war and political strategies. He noted that oldest references to it exist in Hindu statesman and philosopher Kautilya's Arthashastra (“The Science of Material Gain”) – a Sanskrit providing insight into the ancient Indian anthology of political wisdom, theory, and the art of statecraft.

tournament. While noting that the major goal of the Olympiad is to provide much needed experience and exposure to the relatively young team, team Guyana is also aiming to improve the country's overall ranking in the sport.

Guyana is currently ranked at 146 in the world but is hoping to break through to the top 100. This tournament also gives untitled players a chance to win titles and titled players the chance to gain higher titles from winning matches.

Twelve year old Anaya Lall, who is the first deaf chess player to represent Guyana at this event, has to be accompanied by her mother who will act as a translator. Mrs. Lall's travel

is being supported by the Deaf Association of Guyana and is also seeking assistance through a GoFundMe C a m p a i g n (https://www.gofundme.com /f/guyana-chess-federation).

High Commissioner Srinivasa was greatly impressed with the team, and especially with Anaya for her exceptional performance as she goes on to make history for Guyana. He noted as well that India has made significant improvements in the care and support for persons with disabilities over recent years, so he is excited for Anaya to visit his country.

President of the Guyana Chess Federation Frankie Farley said, “His Excellency Dr. K. J. Srinivasa's guidance and pep talk was indeed

inspiring to me and to the entire team. The High Commissioner of India extended his hospitality and gave his confidence and assurance that our team will excel at the Olympiad. It is necessary that our team leave the shores of Guyana with a combination of high spirits and optimism that I'm certain will transfer into success.”

The Guyana Chess Federation wishes to express its sincere gratitude to His Excellency for his hospitality and generosity in issuing the visas for the Olympiad team's trip to India.

The ten chess players have been training for the tournament with Slovenian Grand Master Georg Mohr ahead of their departure later this month.

GFF refs excel at first Caribbean Games Futsal Tournament Two Guyanese referees impressed FIFA and UEFA futsal instructors during the inaugural Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe, culminating in their selection as part of the match official team for the final of the competition.

Colin Abel and Lenval Peart were singled out for praise by FIFA futsal instructor Wilson Da Costa, who said the feedback received for the two officials had been “amazing”.

“In a nutshell, both referees were exceptional, on and off the field of play,” Da Costa said. “They officiated the finals – and that speaks volumes. I want to congratulate the football association for keeping these officials interested in the game.”

Abel was praised for his “superb personality”, “good foul recognition”, and “very good movement”.

“I would like to see him as a FIFA referee for futsal by the end of the year,” Da Costa explained.

“That is the impact he made on myself and on the UEFA instructor from France.”

Peart was singled out for his “expertise” and “know-how”.

“Peart is someone who leads futsal in your country,” Da Costa said.

GFF Head of Refereeing and Executive Committee member Dion Inniss said he was extremely proud of the two officials.

“We are particularly happy with the performances of Colin Abel and Lenval Peart,” Inniss said.
