Can the police detain a motor vehicle willy-nilly? DEAR EDITOR, A few days ago, it was published in one of the dailies that a motor car was ordered into the Cove and John Police compound after the passenger with her suitcases was ordered out of the vehicle when it was stopped to purchase cane juice from a roadside stand and she was left stranded on the Public Road. Is this one of the Clause of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations whereby the Police can detain a Motor Vehicle willy-nilly for minor
infractions if any? I was of the impression that the Police can detain any vessel, aircraft or vehicle under the following circumstances:a. If it is suspected that anything is/was stolen or suspected to be stolen is conveyed therein. b. If it was used in the commission of any crime. c. If the driver is under the influence of drink or drug so as to be incapable of controlling that vehicle. It must be noted that Traffic Offences are not criminal offences, only in
Motor manslaughter or driving under the influence of drink or drug. It was also my impression that a Motor Vehicle can only be detained by a Certifying Officer and before doing so he must give you a Notice to present the vehicle to be examined at a time and date at a particular place. If my comments have any merit, I hope the Legal Fraternity take note and there is an urgent reply by the Police Public Relations Officer to clear any misconceptions. Walter D. Chand
Here are the facts that... From page 4 made him unrecognizable but he didn’t. However, Rodney’s vehicle was one block away from the metal prison wall when he died. The PNC later admitted this fact with its flyer later that morning of June 14, 1980 stating quite crudely, “Rodney blows himself on way to blow up the prison.” A WPA press release dated June 17, 1980 said a senior PNC security official was overheard around 8.45 pm at a party stating he was leaving to meet with Burnham and other PNC h e a v y w eights because Rodney was killed. Clearly, if we believe this statement, Burnham knew it was Rodney who was killed yet his government issued propaganda to the contrary at 6 am the following morning. The only plausible explanation is to cover up the
killing. Burnham was in Guyana when Rodney died. The 1980 US State Department review on Guyana states “available information indicates that the government was implicated in the June 13 death of WPA activist Walter Rodney and the subsequent removal of key witnesses from the country.” Forbes Burnham is now preserved on video (see above) suggesting a theory
of Rodney’s death by accident that has always been utterly rejected by forensic, logical and factual evidence and rejected by the US findings. Minette Bacchus and her pals can flounce, dance, prance, masquerade and revel all they want around these facts but they continue to point unflaggingly to Burnham’s role in Rodney’s assassination. M. The buck stops with leaders
DEAR EDITOR, I read the recent column about racism perhaps being the saddest thing in the world, which ends with the hope that “one day we judge each other for what we essentially are and not on what is inside our genes”. And so say many of us. I have often hoped to lay my hands on, or see a film about, what the Nazis (and others) think of the nations they had ructions with, in the past. A German colleague once told me that Germany was once a class-ridden society and when Hitler came to power he “stamped it all out”. My colleague also said that from what she gathered, Hitler’s biggest gripe with the Jewish people was their failure to circulate money nationwide - they kept it within their community. I read a few years ago that it was the Jewish philosophy that money made within their community must be allowed to circulate therein twelve times! To me, in effect this means it may never leave the community.
My colleague amused me by saying during hot summers, at work, she and her fellow typists were allowed to sit at their desks in swim suits, playsuits and micro skirts, without any objections from their bosses. I imagine they were working behind-the-scenes away from public gaze. A Dutch tour guide told me he worked as an interpreter with the Germans during WWII and they were very considerate employers. Recently, I read a piece on the Jewish position today. They argued that during WWII and the period of the Holocaust, the world seemed to have forsaken them and, at the
e n d o f t h e w a r, t h e i r leaders decided that they must never again suffer a similar fate, they must practise self-reliance, build up a strong defence force and take responsibility for their own lives. They have, and now use it as intended. No doubt other cultures are, at this very moment, thinking the same. I guess there are two sides to everything. My own view is that all leaders have to delegate responsibilities and cannot be everywhere to prevent the atrocities committed in their names, but, unfortunately, the buck stops with them. Letters... Where your views make the news
Kissoon is no Socrates DEAR EDITOR, There is no end to Freddie Kissoon’s academic rascality. His response to me “Did Forbes Burnham see me and Walter Rodney as Socrates’ children?” (KN June 30, 2013) confirms this ‘leopard’ is comfortable in the spots of counterfeit academics. Now Freddie seeks to equate himself to Walter Rodney and Socrates. In academia, Rodney was a student of par excellence, he was never accused or caught engaging in academic dishonesty in classroom work. And the reason Rodney was not given a job at the University of Guyana (UG) was not the same reason Kissoon was not given as he deceptively wants us to believe. And the equation to Socrates is another deceit. Kissoon is no Socrates! Socrates was a thinker/ philosopher of no mean order who operated in a time when the political establishment wanted the society to think in a particular way and outside of that was considered heresy. In Kissoon’s case it was not brilliance or deviation/ dissent in thinking it was his academic rascality which influenced his dishonourable discharge from completing his doctoral study that caused him not to be employed at UG during the Forbes Burnham administration. And yes, much to Kissoon’s chagrin, this will be repeated ad nausea a la nursery rhyme style, until he gets it and all understand a primary basis for his angst with Burnham. Kissoon is mixing up and deliberately abusing concept. What he considers in his instance Burnham’s “denial of [his] right to work” at UG is not so. Kissoon was not
denied the right to work, what he was denied was the opportunity to carry his academic rascality at UG to negatively influenced young and impressionable minds. Nothing prevented Kissoon from seeking employment elsewhere, nor has he said if he sought to and was denied. This is an issue he must be honest and forthright about and stop blaming Burnham for not enabling his dishonourable academic conduct. In this regards, Burnham did the society a great favour by saving a few generations from being exposed to questionable academics. Over the years, Kissoon has also accused Burnham of victimising Mrs. Freddie Kissoon. Let him provide the case, in all its honesty, to cause right-thinking persons to believe this is not one of his constant foray in delusions and counterfeit to gain public attention/ sympathy. The others whom Kissoon claims were denied opportunity to teach at UG let him provide the evidence for each why such was denied. Because no right-thinking person would accept that such was done in blanket form and without a reason. Let him give the society the opportunity to so determinate, on a case by case basis, the merit or demerit, justification or lack thereof for those identified. The Walter Rodney/ Forbes Burnham matter is about unearthing the truth how Rodney met his death, and whom ((including him) may be responsible. This is what I seek and I would want to think rightthinking persons also want. For 33 years Kissoon, et al, in gospel-like fashion have repeatedly said Burnham is
responsible. And even as ordinary folks, religious scholars and archaeologists continue to revisit and question the Holy Bible, on the Rodney matter it is heresy to even dare to think outside the 33-year gospel as handed down to us by the WPA on June 13, 1980. For the believers, daring to demand getting to the truth or having a different opinion makes one deserving to be stoned (I hope they stick to the verbal stoning because that I can deal with it). Now when called upon to support the accusation of Burnham’s guilt by providing the evidence, there is a mad dash to refashion the gospel (e.g. see Kissoon’s column of June 30, 2013) or deviate from the issue by attacking those who are calling for proof or the Independent International Commission of Enquiry (IICE). Note Kissoon and his comrades-in-arms apparently are not interested in this for they have not joined the voices of those calling for the IICE. There is an old saying that he who asserts must first be called to prove. Is this what terrifies Kissoon, et al? Is he afraid his counterfeit will be further exposed, he does not have the “evidence” he made claim to over the years? Why accuse and not want to prove when the opportunity may be nigh? Contrary to Kissoon’s academic deceit, nowhere in my writings on the Rodney issue have I said, “Burnham didn’t kill Rodney.” All I am asking is that the evidence be provided to prove so and the IICE offers the opportunity to do so. I also await the requested proof to his claim (letter of June 17, 2013) that: “Ms. Bacchus falls into a category of very crude political and racial primitiveness that has no place in the world, not only in Guyana. She is the mirror image of her East Indian counterparts. Their binary is what destroyed Guyana and continues to devastate this lovely country with lovely people.” In my June 25, 2013 letter, I requested this academic counterfeit provide proof of same. He responded on June 30, 213 but has not done so. And contrary to Kissoon that this is his “final” response to me, I assure him when it comes to exposing his academic counterfeit there is no finality with me. He has had free reign for too long, accusing without proving, and targeting the undeserving to malign and alienate. Enough is enough! Minette Bacchus

Rossignol Butcheries Guyana officially opens Rossignol Butcheries Guyana, which includes five partners, was officially declared open yesterday evening at their Lot 76-77 Church Street, Georgetown location. The list of guest speakers included the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Suriname Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. Raymond Sapoen and Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname, Ms. Mehroen Nisa KurbanBaboe. In their presentations, they all agreed that the opening of the butchery in Guyana is a representation of regional integration that provides much benefit for the people of Guyana and Suriname. Robert Van Dijk, Gerrard Van Dijk, Bryan Renten, Humphrey Blom and Rick Ravensway are the five partners that are spearheading the company which is known to produce the highest quality of meat, freshly baked bread and appetizing pastries. One of the Partners, Gerrard Van Dijk, indicated to this newspaper that the company has six other branches that are operating in Suriname and because of the potential of the Guyanese market; they have taken the bold step to invest and offer their services. Van Dijk explained that he is very happy with this partnership between Guyana and Suriname and added that

The majority of the meat sold at the butchery is bought locally but only a small quantity is imported from the U.S.A and Suriname. He added that their excellent assortment of bread is also imported from

Suriname. “We will work with farmers to help them improve farming techniques so that a higher quality of meat can be provided and the standard can be maintained,” explained
Renten. Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry, Mr. John Tracey, stressed that the occasion not only celebrates the opening of the business but rather the
increase of standards in the Industry. Mr. Tracey added that the opening of the company is a vote of confidence in Guyana. “We celebrate here today, the deepening of relations between our regional and international neighbours. I am pleased with the strengthening of not only our cultural links between Guyana and Suriname but also the economic relations as well,” expressed an enthused Tracey. “Whether it is with local or other entrepreneurs, we have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that Guyana is a good place to invest,” said Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Ramsammy. The Minister explained that while he is proud and honored that the Company has chosen to come to Guyana, he added that they will provide competition that is good for others which will ultimately catapult Guyana to a place of constantly striving to improve in its quality of meat which is provided for local consumption. “I know we are used to
seeing the glaring headlines of negatives in Guyana but there are a lot of good things happening in our country. Though our country is a victim of non tariff barriers, we are the only CARICOM country that has an O.I.E certificate. (The World Organization for Animal Health was formerly named Office International des Epizooties, hence OIE which is an international organization that monitors diseases in animals.) Not only were we awarded this certificate but we are on the verge of receiving our second. In the face of all the challenges we face as a poor nation, these are some of the things we should be proud of and celebrate,” the Minister added. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, patrons got the opportunity to interact with the partners of the company as they were given a tour of the Butchery. This provided a perfect platform for networking as the attendees enjoyed the delicacies prepared by the Butchery.

The Thomas Carroll Affair (Part II)
The unraveling of the US visa scheme By Dale Andrews But how did Carroll’s scheme get busted? According to Casavis, Carroll was extremely greedy. Having spent a year issuing visas, Carroll had moved up into the Economic/ Political Section of the US Embassy in Georgetown. He had made so much money that he had become complacent. “He said that moving into that section was the best thing. He was tired. He was stealing so much money that he was exhausted. You know, when you’re stealing that much money on a regular basis and you’re dealing with all sorts of scumbags, he was happy to get out of the visa section.” At the time, the United States of America had sent down a Regional Security Officer to investigate some allegations based on information provided by the late local diamond dealer Joe D’Agrella. Casavis described Joe D’Agrella as a brave man; a patriot who was a tremendous asset for Guyana. The local diamond merchant had complained to
Thomas Carroll the US Embassy; somebody was buying into the business big time. “Joe wasn’t doing any business, nobody was doing any business. Why? Because Carroll is interested in diamonds, he’s trying to ship out all the wealth in Guyana he could steal. So if you’re a diamond merchant you can’t buy anything, all the prices are inflated,” Casavis said. At the time no one had any idea that Carroll was destroying the local diamond industry with the huge amount of cash he had at his
disposal. Casavis told me that when Carroll found out that D’Agrella had complained about the diamond issue, he used his connections to threaten the diamond dealer’s money. D’Agrella did not back down. “Joe actually stands up for Guyana. He was the only guy that I have ever seen in this whole thing that actually stands up for his country. God bless him,” Casavis said. By this time another Visa Officer Benedict Wolfe took over from Carroll. Surprisingly Wolfe was a clean cut Catholic man of German origin who wanted to become a priest. It was when he was approached by a visa broker that Carroll’s scheme began to really unravel. “This was crazy; when the visa broker called up Benedict Wolfe, he was trying to bribe a priest,” Casavis said. The pieces of the puzzle came together when Wolfe approached the security officer to tell her about the offer to sell visas that was made to him. The visa selling racket had reached epic proportions with the Canadians moving their visa issuing officers out
of the country for similar reasons. It was soon learnt that Carroll had been selling visas during the time he was a visa officer. “It was not just one guy. It turns out that Carroll formed an entire gang and plunged into Guyanese life like a tornado, destroying everything.” However, the security officer was frustrated in her efforts to nail Carroll because he was no longer in the visa issuing section. She now had to work with the would-be visa broker who had approached Benedict Wolfe in order to get to Carroll. “Carroll was a renegade. He’s torn people’s lives,” Casavis disclosed in the interview that a plan was hatched that involved wiring Benedict Wolfe to acquire information from his meetings with the would-be visa broker. “They tell Benedict, ‘you must go and ask this guy how to steal’….and Carroll decides to help him and there is a price too….so he (Carroll) says ‘I’m gonna give you my deluxe package, I’m gonna set you up with everybody. This is what gets him in trouble. Carroll had Guyana in the

But despite all that they acquired on Carroll they could not arrest him on Embassy soil; they had to get him to America. They also felt that if Carroll was arrested by Guyanese personnel, Leon Fraser and his squad would have ensured that he got
away. Eventually they did get Carroll to the United States where they eventually arrested him. According to Casavis, Carroll was only aware that he was under investigation after he was held in the United States of America. Carroll was initially (continued on page 11)

The case of the murdered bridegroom ...
Mom prepared for a wedding, ended up with a funeral A month after her son was found with his head bashed in and throat cut, Savie Singh remains in a state of depression while hoping that the individual that she believes killed her son will be brought to justice. Last June was supposed to have been a joyful time for Ms. Singh and her family, since they were preparing for the wedding of her son, Kemraj. The bride-to-be was a 17year-old whose parents had wanted her to marry a wealthy young man from the West Coast of Demerara. But the teen was in love with Savie’s son, Kemraj, and had run away from home to stay with her lover. According to her, the teen’s parents were unhappy with this relationship, since they felt that Kemraj, a sawmill supervisor, was “too poor”. But Ms. Singh said that she was overjoyed that her eldest son was finally deciding to
settle down. “When he brought the girl (home) I was overjoyed. I was always asking him, ‘when you will get married,’ and he would day, ‘mommy, time ain’t reach yet.’” The wedding was planned for June 3. Ms. Singh said that shortly before the big day, her son decided, against her wishes, to travel from the family’s home at Hoff VanAurich, Essequibo, to the Land of Canaan , East Bank Demerara sawmill where he worked. He had assured her that he would return on June 2, the day before the wedding. But she was concerned for his safety because some individuals who were upset over his relationship with the teen had threatened to kill him. There are reports that Kemraj was also threatened by the young woman’s former boyfriend. “I told him not to go (to work) before something happen,’ and he say ‘mom, we have to get money.’”
The unraveling of the ... From page 10 sentenced to 21 years imprisonment, which was reduced to 11. Although several persons have questioned the factualness of Casavi s ’ book, many are convinced that it is as close to the truth that one could get. Although I admit that I have not read the entire
book as yet, I have seen enough excerpts to c o n c l u d e t h a t C a r r o l l ’s scheme could not have been successful without the strong input from local officialdom. What I do know for sure, everybody that I have spoken to about the book cannot wait to get their hands on a copy.
By May 28, Savie Singh had already sent out wedding invitations. It was on that day that she also planned to buy the couple’s wedding outfits and rings. And she was heading by boat to Georgetown when she received a phone call. Someone had murdered the bridegroom. “You could imagine how I felt. Luckily there was somebody with me, or I could have jumped overboard to get news like this.” The intended groom’s mutilated body was found in a shack at his employer’s Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara sawmill. His throat had a gaping wound and it appeared that he had been struck repeatedly to the head. A bloody hammer was found at the scene. A postmortem would later reveal that he had suffered a fractured skull after being struck at least three times with a heavy object. Detectives immediately suspected that he had been slain by an individual or individuals who were upset about his relationship with the 17-year-old bride-to-be. Their prime suspect was the teen’s previous boyfriend, but there were unable to immediately locate him.
However, Kaieteur News managed to contact the young man by cell phone on at least three occasions. While admitting to knowing Singh, the young man proclaimed his innocence, but said that he would not turn himself over to the police. He was eventually detained. But the suspect stuck to his story, even telling detectives that he was at Leguan, Essequibo, at the time of the murder. Police found no fingerprints on the bloodstained hammer and
were forced to release their main suspect. The case appears to be at a standstill, but this is a situation that a still grief-stricken Savie Singh refuses to accept. What makes it even harder to bear is that she sometimes still sees the individual whom she believes had a hand in her son’s murder. “Up to last Sunday he hire a car and driving slowly past my house and looking in.” She says that there is at least one person who can testify that a suspect followed her son from Essequibo to Land of Canaan. However, she says that the individual is fearful for their safety.
Kemraj Singh She is convinced that at least three individuals participated in her son’s murder. “I don’t know how the police can’t pick up anything yet. “Up to now I can’t catch myself…I can’t eat a proper meal. In this country there is no justice.”

HOME ON THE RANGE (ROVER) A man who is always sexually interested in people other than his partner is said to have a “roving” eye. In Trinidad and Tobago there is at least one man, a Government Minister at that, who seems to have a “Rover” eye. He owns one and is now being accused of using his position as the Minister responsible for Housing to get a quasi-Government company he controls, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), to lease a Range Rover, equipped with a police siren and strobe lights, for his use at TT$298,000 per year or about US$50,000. “The police accoutrements,” one critic said, “makes it a very flashy car. Strobe lights make you seem you’re coming when you’re actually standing still.” This is not the first time a Minister’s choice of transport has provoked criticism. One of them, Vasant Bharat, was accused of getting his Ministry to purchase a
Porsche for him. This prompted my use of an old riddle: “What is the difference between a hedgehog (porcupine) and a Porsche?” In a porcupine the pricks are on the outside. Since Carrera is the name of the island prison off the coast of Trinidad, the talk was that instead of driving a Porsche, Carrera the Minister should be driven and kept there. Fancy cars by Government officials have attracted as much criticism as admiration and there were concerns recently about Jamaican politicians. A friend from that country told me, “The reason so many of our Ministers are driving BMWs is because it is the only car name they can spell.” There was also the wellknown “Prado” Government of Guyana. I remember a cartoon of a politician driving a “bull-cart” into a cane field and coming out with a Prado SUV. So what is it with these men and their cars? Romance writer Anita Clenney is
convinced that all human males are as fascinated with cars as they are with breasts. Lord Rootes, the famous British car manufacturer, said, “No other man-made device since the shields and lances of ancient knights fulfills a man’s ego like an automobile.” According to one site, “It doesn’t matter what you look like, how long your penis is or how high or low you wear your jeans, your car is the one machine that defines you.” Is it true then that big cars are the way that small men compensate for their “shortcomings”? Clearly the cars we drive say a lot about us. Flashy cars get noticed. But is that all? According to Germaine Greer, the Australian feminist, “Pop psychology used to have a lot to say about men and cars. The received wisdom was that rapid acceleration feeds the fantasy of automatic erection, as if a man inside his car were to become his penis, boring into external reality at high
speed.” Her perspective creates considerable doubt that the car leased by HDC is for use by anyone but the Minister. She is adamant, “A man’s car can only be beloved if it is his alone. Man cannot love cars that have to be shared. No man is in love with the family car.” So what about SUVs? An article about what your choice of cars says about you claims about SUV drivers, “This is the ‘big daddy’ category. We like the power, size and amount of space it provides. And we aren’t worried about depleting fossil fuels, either. This may not be an environmentally-friendly choice, but we love the presence it gives us on the highway. Nobody is going to push us around. These are take-charge vehicles driven by the takecharge type of guy.” Interestingly, the Minister with the Rover eye, Roodal Moonilal, is also Minister of the Environment. While there is a growing body of knowledge about Objectophillia or people having intimate relationships with things like their cars, the relationship does not have to go that far. Gal Saad, a marketing expert, is
convinced that cars are among a variety of products used by men to make themselves more desirable in the mating market. He says, “One such product used by men is the proverbial sexy car…Ultimately such vehicles serve as honest signals of one’s high social standing akin to how the peacock’s tail is an honest signal of phenotypic quality.” The Minister claims that the vehicle is “very sturdy” and “equipped for the terrain” so it might be especially good for rough rides and riders. But what about the Range Rover? Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) says, “I know full well that most people hate it. Cyclists. Socialists. Ramblers. And even petrolheads. They tell jokes that involve hedgehogs and wonder out loud why anyone would want to drive about in a car that seems to revel in its size and its consumption. And it’s true. When you are in a Range Rover, you can arrange your face with a great deal of care and attention to detail, but, no matter what expression you choose, you will appear to be sneering at
people alongside you at the lights. You can’t help it. They’re the little people. And you’re up there, with the gods. There’s more, too. Many different sorts of people buy Range Rovers. Footballers. Footballers’ wives. Footballers’ mistresses. Drug dealers. Farmers. Businessmen. Americans.” Trinis too. And talking about being up there with the gods, when a humble reporter questioned him about the Rover, Moonilal responded, “But Rover is very good vehicle, you should buy one if possible.” As I read that I thought about what Lord Byron seems to have predicted for Moonilal and his government when the next election comes, “Though the night was made for loving,/ And the day returns too soon,/ Yet we’ll go no more a-roving/ By the light of the moon.”
Several law enforcement officers from the three police divisions in Berbice: SubDivisions One, Two and Three, participated in an education and empowerment seminar over the weekend from Operation DreamCatchers medical mission team from New York. The initiative was held at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC). The ranks were educated through slideshow presentations on police response to persons with diabetes, heart disease, mental health problems, stroke, alcohol abuse and also exposed to CPR training. The ranks were also afforded the opportunity to ask questions of the medical team. At the end of the session, the team presented each Sub- Division with First Responders/First Aid Manuals and books which will be made available at the various police stations in East and West Berbice.
One of the members of the team, Anesha Narain, stated that “we also are having a health fair where we have invited the public to come and will speak on the same topics….symptoms and causes, and we are trying to give out canes, walkers, wheel chairs, back braces and we come every year.” She noted that it is the team’s fourth mission, “and this is the first time we dealt with the members of the Guyana Police Force.” Operation DreamCatchers was started in September 2009 by three friends: Melissa Butchin and Stacey Longden in New York. The group has grown considerably over the years, with members both here and overseas. They raise funds to assist organizations and needy persons with medical supplies. The team that is currently in Guyana comprises medical students who are studying in New York at the moment.
“At the same time, we try to educate the public because we want to try to prevent people from getting these diseases,” Narain stated. DreamCatchers has been visiting Guyana over the past four years at the behest of the Association of Bible Churches in Guyana and holding medical outreaches all across the country. So far, they have visited all the hospitals in Guyana. They travelled to Edinburgh, Wakenaam, Mahaica, and St. Cuthbert’s Mission to visit with the communities and distribute medical items. The team comprises: Jessica Geer, Robert Rock, Omashwari Antooa, Melissa Buchan, Anesha Narain and their local on-the-ground coordinator, Pastor Shawn Geer. The team is looking forward to their 2014 mission to Guyana. Geer thanked the team and police force members for being a part of the session. “Of all people, you [the police] deal with some of the strangest cases of the day…so it has been a huge concern of ours.” Geer added that the next step will be to provide help in terms of counseling members of the public about alcohol, drug abuse and suicide. MESSAGE FROM HIS EXCELLENCY DONALD RAMOTAR, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA ON THE OCCASION OF THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) My fellow Guyanese, This year we commemorate 40 years since the birth of the Caribbean Community. It was indeed an ambitious but necessary undertaking by the four founding nations, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago, when on July 4th 1973 they signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas which represented a tangible expression of their collective belief in the ideals of regional integration. This juncture in the history of the CARICOM family is an occasion for celebration as well as critical reflection. Regionalism is a tangible expression by states that greater benefits can be accrued from promoting our commonalities. Therefore, the region has much to boast about its collaboration in the areas of foreign p o l i c y, advancement through joint partnership with third states and groupings like the European Union, the joint promotion of our culture through events like CARIFESTA and sports. A united CARICOM is indeed a very powerful voting bloc in multilateral bodies and the r e g i o n ’s commitment to democratic principles is recognised and applauded the world over. I am convinced that our individual countries can be more prosperous and indeed strengthened, if bold steps are taken to deepen our integration process. I n t h i s regard the Revision of the Treaty of Chaguaramas paved the way for the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and
President Donald Ramotar Economy. While the economies of the region remain vulnerable to external shocks, the CSME offers businesses the opportunity to expand their operation and be profitable by accessing the markets of the wider region. Integration implies, however, that our peoples must be vested with the right to move and do business across the region without imposed barriers. Heads of Government since the Conference of Heads in Grand Anse, Grenada in 1989, have recommitted to hassle-free movement of people to promote a greater sense of community. Yet insularity continues to plague our union and poses a threat to what we envisage for our peoples. The Region has indeed survived many challenges, the most recent being the economic crises which struck in 2008 and the many natural disasters as a result of climate
change. Given our vulnerabilities as a Region, it is time that we heighten our preparedness to such challenges even as we remain engaged in the process of advocating for countries to reduce their emissions. Similar progress must be made in other areas in order for us to meet the demands of the international environment. Critical to this is the work of the CARICOM Secretariat in performing at its intended optimum. In this regard, Guyana welcomed the Reform process currently taking place across the Region. This process will see the restructuring of the Secretariat, and other Regional Institutions to make these institutions more proactive to anticipate and respond to the current trends in a timely manner. While Guyana has had the distinction to serve as the Headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, many are unaware of the work being done on behalf of the wider Community. There is therefore the need for more sensitisation of the work of CARICOM, thereby allowing for a greater appreciation not only by Guyanese citizens, but also nationals across the Region. To this end, it is my hope that the reform Process would also allow for a mechanism of regular engagement of the Secretariat with stakeholders of the Community. Forty years has brought many notable successes. I refer to institutions and Associate Institutions such as the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC); The Caribbean Court of
PNCR MESSAGE ON THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF CARICOM On the 40th Anniversary of the Regional Integration movement, the People’s National Congress Reform extends warm congratulations to the people of the Caribbean Community, the staff of the CARICOM Secretariat and to the Guyanese people, for a happy and meaningful CARICOM Day 2013. Forty years ago the Treaty of Chaguaramas established the Caribbean Community and Common Market, later known as CARICOM. At the 8th Heads of Government conference of the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) held in April 1973, in Georgetown Guyana, the decision was made to establish the Caribbean Community. The process through which it was to be established is set out in the Georgetown Accord
issued by that conference. The Founding Fathers of CARICOM and the signatories to the Treaty of Chaguaramas were Prime Ministers Hon. Errol Barrow for Barbados; Hon. Forbes Burnham for Guyana; Hon. Michael Manley for Jamaica; and Hon. Eric Williams for Trinidad and Tobago. The PNCR takes great pride in the role of our Founder Leader in the regional integration movement. Our Party trusts that even as we celebrate this occasion, we will all continue to commit ourselves to the strengthening and advancement of our common Caribbean home. The PNCR has played a pivotal role in promoting and sustaining the movement for the development of a common Caribbean identity and a strong Regional
Economy, is familiar with the recent challenges which have tested the resolve and commitment of the Leaders of the Community. The integration process has been challenged before, in various ways, but it has survived them and as a result, is today one of the oldest integration movements in the World. The PNCR would never lose faith in the resilience of the Community, despite the trials. On this the 40th Anniversary, we affirm our commitment to the Integration Process and our Caribbean Leaders, in the confident expectation that all obstacles and challenges will be overcome, so that the Community will be enabled to play an even greater role in the lives of all of the citizens of this our Caribbean Region. HAPPY CARICOM DAY!
Justice (CCJ), of which a notable Guyanese national sits as a Judge; The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB); among others. However the region is challenged to reorient if it is to remain effectively engaged globally. A strategically repositioned Caribbean Community can continue to make a significant impact at the global level through among other things forging new partnerships with Third States and the further strengthening of its relations with other Regional Groupings such as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) of which both Guyana and Suriname are members. I trust that even as we celebrate such a momentous occasion, that we would pause to reflect of our journey thus far and seek new ways of ensuring that the strides we have made over the past 40 years are not lost to the insecurities that exist. Guyana’s commitment to regional integration has been steadfast over the years and will continue in the future. I acknowledge the inputs made by Guyanese to the success of regional integration and we would continue to seek new ways in which the aspirations of our Caribbean Community (CARICOM) can be realised. My Government’s full support to the continued efforts to deepening and widening of CARICOM is assured, as other regional Governments also work toward a more integrated Caribbean.

GPHC highlights importance of specialist nurses In a quest to improve its many services while addressing the need for nurses, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has over the years introduced a number of training programmes, several of which have focused on enhanced nursing care. For this reason, Director of Nursing Services, Sister Audrey Corry, said that the public hospital has been encouraging nurses to embark on specialist training whereby they are able to qualify themselves to the highest possible level in a particular area. This, she said, is needful if they are to deliver their services in a more proficient way. It was against this very background, she said, that the hospital had introduced programmes such as the Anaesthesia and Psychiatric Nursing programmes. The hospital has also been training some nurses in the area of neonatal care and according to Sister Corry, “all of those things require staff so we are working on training.” “What we are doing is looking to forge ahead with more specialist programmes so that we can help develop the role of nurses. We are looking to make our staff more competitive, make them stronger in terms of their skills and abilities and we are trying to help them to do a better job than they are doing,” explained Sister Corry. And while it has been imperative at some locations
Sister Audrey Corry that nurses have a general knowledge of all areas, she insisted that the need for specialist nurses cannot be disregarded. Moreover, she highlighted that “we still see the need for specialist nurses...and because of that fact we are moving ahead with many programmes that we are introducing in the hospitals nowadays. We do need the specialist people; we do need people who are in Critical Care, we do need people who are in Dialysis, we do need people who are in Paediatrics at a higher level.” Specialist training, according to Sister Corry, has been an area that the GPHC has been emphasising over the past decade and moves have been made to work with nurses to develop their skills (continued on page 22)

GPHC highlights importance of ... From page 21 and knowledge. In this regard, she said that the hospital has even been considering suggestions from some nurses to allow exchange programmes whereby local nurses can visit overseas hospitals to get a firsthand understanding of their work even as overseas nurses are accommodated here. But since such an initiative could prove to be costly, efforts have not been made to realise this proposal, Sister Corry disclosed. However, Sister Corry, who was at the time addressing the first batch of nurses to graduate from an inaugural Critical Care Nursing programme last week, urged that nurses do not become discouraged, but
rather, “keep on doing what you are doing and do it well.” The 15-month long programme, which was the brainchild of Assistant Director of the Nursing Services, Mr. Owen John, commenced on July 25, 2011 and not only sought to boost the ethical skills of the nurses but also entailed modules that dealt with care for patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological disorders, among others. Courses were delivered on a voluntary basis by experienced and qualified Critical Care Nurses from the United States and catered mainly to nurses tasked with attending to patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Seventeen nurses graduated
from the programme. The initiation of the programme, according to John, was premised on expressed concerns that despite the best efforts of nurses assigned to the Unit, quality of care delivered would not improve significantly unless appropriate training was given to the nurses assigned to the Unit. But John has expressed disappointment that the programme although thorough, in terms of its content, was not accredited by the Nursing Council. He disclosed too that no reason was offered as to why the programme was not accredited. The Assistant Director of Nursing explained that without accreditation from the Nursing Council, the graduated nurses will not be in a position to lobby for promotions or even higher salaries with their added knowledge. However, Sister Corry is optimistic that the programme will eventually be accredited.

Broomes lauds media for highlighting Trafficking in Persons Simona Broomes, President of the Guyana Women Miners’ Organization, (GWMO) has praised the local media for partnering with the organization in highlighting Trafficking In Persons (TIP) in Guyana. Broomes, who was recently honoured by US Secretary of State John Kerry as one of the 2013 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report Heroes, said that the since the organization began its work in 2012, the media has played an integral role in bringing to light this heinous crime. According to the woman miner, she was surprised and humbled at the same time by the willingness of media houses to allow staff to go into the fields with members of GWMO on their various operations and outreaches in far flung communities. “Those reporters did not have to go with us but they did regardless if it were bus, plane, and pick-up; whatever mode of transportation it was they were with us. They stood by us and even put themselves in grave danger,” she said. Recapping an incident where members of the organization were confronted by a group of men who believed that the rightful place for a woman was the kitchen, Broomes said that the photo-
Simona Broomes journalist kept filming the episode. She said it is instances like those that provide a sense of security for the women who risked their own safety to rescue other disadvantaged women and girls from the “sex trade,” which is referred to as modern day slavery. However, the life-threatening situations these media personnel put themselves into highlight injustices such as child labour and sexual slavery is not always regarded. “It is because of this very reason and the partnership gained in this fight I say thank you to the publishers, editors
and reporters. The media fraternity in Guyana has been brave in joining with the GWMO to highlight a problem that was not looked at seriously. The media has gotten my respect,” Broomes emphasized. She stressed that the work of the GWMO would have gone unnoticed had it not been for the brave work of the media. According to Broomes, while some in society say that the media exaggerates the reportage of incidents of TIP she believes otherwise. She stated that the media account of the situations are accurate and balanced but may be embarrassing for those who do not want to face the reality. Broomes said that before she was honoured by the US, the international media contacted her and that was made possible through the local media. Besides the media, the organization has received support from men, including Reginald Browne, Hector Broomes, Dr. Lazaro Ordonez, John Charles, Desmond Hamer, Ronald Fernandez, and Sean Campbell. According to Broomes, these men have been very helpful in the organization’s operation and also venture into the hinterland region for protection purposes sometimes.

EBD four-lane expansion ...
APNU calls on contractor, Govt. to hasten project Numerous large contracts undertaken by contractor, BK International, and poor planning of Government are being cited as possible reasons why road extension of the Diamond Public Road into four-lane is slothful. These assertions were made by Joe Harmon, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Parliamentarian, who expressed disgust at the length of time it is taking the contractor and the Public Works Ministry to complete the East Bank Demerara fourlane expansion project, particularly the section from “high bridge” to Diamond Housing Scheme entrance. The contract for the expansion works was signed on October 3, 2011 with project duration of 18 months. BK International commenced physical works in January 2012 and the project was stalled for several months and only recommenced in March 2013. A deadline for the project has not been disclosed but works are expected to conclude next year. According to Harmon, Government and the contractors for the Three Lots from Providence to Diamond need to inform the general public of a specific deadline for the completion of the entire project. While there is traffic congestion occasionally along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, it is most common in Diamond, where works are being undertaken by BK International. As such, for the recommencement of the smooth flow of traffic along that section, the Ministry and the contractor
should hasten works, Harmon emphasized. Harmon stressed that BK International is awarded numerous large contracts by Government and that may be putting a strain on the availability of resources. He believes when a company is issued so many large projects at the same time, equipment and personnel are spread thin to satisfy all projects. Harmon said that he had requested all the projects awarded to BK International over a period of time and they were revealed in the National Assembly. He said that this particular company has been awarded many projects and some were not properly done. However, it seems that Government is not focusing on the poor performances. According to Harmon, he also raised the issue of poor planning of Government in terms of the relocation of utilities when projects are ongoing. Works on this project experienced delays because of the need for the relocation of utilities. He stressed that in the design stage of the project it should have been realized that utilities would need to be relocated. As such, provisions should have been made from the inception. “Time has passed for this road to be completed. As an MP and citizen who uses that roadway and faces the same inconvenience as other commuters, I call on Government and the contractor to say when the project will conclude and at least complete a section for the smooth flow of traffic.” According to a
Traffic congestion at Diamond
Government Official, the contractor and Public Works Ministry’s Engineer were told to complete this section of roadway, but are being tardy. In addition, the contractor was asked to patch the roadway from Diamond to Herstelling. A disgruntled commuter
waiting to enter Diamond Housing Scheme told Kaieteur News that almost daily he has to travel to Diamond and is faced with a long line that is time and fuel consuming. The man said that he is aware that whenever construction works are ongoing there might be traffic buildup but
sometimes there is no machinery working on the road and there is still a long line. From observation, he concluded that the long line was created by the unfinished turning lane into Diamond. This should have been a priority. Instead of focusing
on the whole construction the contractor should have given priority to the turning lane for a smooth flow of traffic. And even now, the section of the road that is being prepared for the additional two-lane has been awaiting top surface for quite some time.
Cops ensuring no loopholes in probe - Police Commissioner of Minister’s son Police Commissioner Leroy Brumell yesterday said that investigators surrounding the Robeson Benn Jr. assault investigation are ensuring that they carry out a meticulous probe. Stressing that the police are still taking the allegations seriously, Brumell told Kaieteur News that he has instructed his ranks to do a thorough investigation and ensure that there are no “loopholes”.
Brumell assured that once the probe is completed a report will be dispatched to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice on how to proceed. The alleged assailant was released from police custody last week. Benn Jr has been accused of violently assaulting his 27 year old exgirlfriend at her apartment in the wee hours of June 23, 2013. The young man according to reports has
claimed that he was invited into the woman’s home and that the intercourse was consensual. Kaieteur News was told that the young man has also given a statement to the police in which he claims that he was invited into the home by the young woman. It is unclear what he has said in regard to the injuries the woman sustained. When Kaieteur News had visited the woman her face was swollen, her eyes were bloodshot and she was crying out for pain in her head. The police have received a detailed statement from the woman who alleged she was violently beaten and raped by the young man. The woman had given her statement to the police in the presence of attorney Nigel Hughes. She was also examined by a doctor who has since forwarded his report to the police. The alleged victim said that Benn, who was brandishing a gun, repeatedly punched her in the face and stomach after forcing his way into her home at around 04:00 hrs on June 23 last. The man, according to the woman, sexually assaulted her. But in his statement to the police, Robeson Benn Jr denied that any gun was involved.
The woman said that she was in bed when she heard a knock on the door. She said that she was expecting a relative who was spending time with her, so she opened the door, only to be confronted by her exboyfriend. The woman said she immediately tried to shut the door but the younger Benn forced his way in. She said that after she kept insisting that he leave, Benn became annoyed and began punching her to her face and about the body, leaving her entire face swollen and her upper body badly bruised. Things escalated and he allegedly sexually assaulted her. The woman estimated that her ordeal lasted about 20 minutes before her exboyfriend left. Afterwards the injured woman said that she contacted close friends who took her to the Alberttown Police Station. However, officers there told her that she should make a report at the Brickdam Police Station. She alleged that when she attempted to file her complaint with an officer, the rank, whom she identified, left to go into a room and never came outside. “We were waiting there for about an hour and a half and no one came to me so I left”.

Obama to announce new power initiative for Africa CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — President Barack Obama on Sunday will announce a new initiative to double access to electric power in sub-Saharan Africa, part of his effort to build on the legacy of equality and opportunity forged by his personal hero, Nelson Mandela. Obama, who flew from Johannesburg to Cape Town on Sunday, is paying tribute to the ailing 94-year-old Mandela throughout the day. The president and his family visited Robben Island, where the anti-apartheid leader spent 18 years confined to a tiny cell, including a stop at the lime quarry where Mandela toiled and developed the lung problems that sent him to the hospital for most of the month. The White House said Obama’s guide during the tour was 83-year-old South African politician Ahmed Kathrada, who also was held at the prison for nearly two decades and guided Obama on his 2006 visit to the prison as a U.S. senator. The president also saw the prison courtyard where Mandela planted grapevines that remain today, and where he and others in the dissident leadership would discuss politics, sneak notes to one another and hide writings. “On behalf of our family, we’re deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield. The world is grateful for the heroes of Robben Island,
who remind us that no shackles or cells can match the strength of the human spirit,” Obama wrote in the guest book in the courtyard, his U.S. Secret Service agents standing watch in the old guard tower above. During the tour, which took place under sunshine and clear, blue skies, Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha took in the expansive view of the quarry, a huge crater with views of the rusty guard tower from where Mandela was watched. Obama commented on the “hard labor” Mandela endured and asked Kathrada to remind his daughters how long Mandela was in prison. Michelle Obama asked how often Mandela would work and was told he worked daily. As the family turned to leave, Obama asked Kathrada to tell his daughters how the African National Congress, the South African political party, got started. After the tour, Obama visited retired archbishop Desmond Tutu at a youth center run by his HIV foundation before delivering what the White House has billed as the signature speech of the president’s weeklong trip, an address at the University of Cape Town that will be infused with memories of Mandela. Obama will use the address to unveil the “Power Africa” initiative, which includes an initial $7 billion investment from the United States over the next five
years. Private companies, including General Electric and Symbion Power, are making an additional $9 billion in commitments with the goal of providing power to millions of Africans crippled by a lack of electricity. Gayle Smith, Obama’s senior director for development and democracy, said more than two-thirds of people living in sub-Saharan Africa do not have electricity, including 85 percent of those living in rural areas. “If you want lights so kids can study at night or you can maintain vaccines in a cold chain, you don’t have that, so going the extra mile to reach people is more difficult,” Smith said. The U.S. and its private sector partners initially will focus its efforts on six countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania, where Obama will wrap up his trip later this week. Former President George W. Bush, who supports health programs throughout the continent, will also be in Tanzania next week, and the White House did not rule out the possibility that the two men might meet. Obama will also highlight U.S. efforts to bolster access to food and health programs on the continent. His advisers said the president sees reducing the poverty and illness that plague many parts of Africa as an extension of Mandela’s example of how change can happen within countries. The former South African
Ex-Chad leader Habre arrested ahead of trial in Senegal (Reuters) - Chad’s former leader Hissene Habre was arrested yesterday in Senegal, where he has been living in freely in exile for 22 years despite accusations of political killing and torture during his time in power, a court spokesman said. Habre, who led Chad between 1982 and 1990, will be tried in a special court set up this year by Senegalese authorities in agreement with the African Union. The case against Habre follows years of procrastinating by Senegal under former president Abdoulaye Wade. It will be first time the former leader of an African state has been tried by another. “He was arrested this morning and placed in police custody after a request by the prosecutor,” said Marcel Mendy, the court’s spokesman.
Hissene Habre Mendy did not give any further details on the arrest. Habre is not actually expected to appear at the court before early 2015 as investigations by the court’s prosecutors are ongoing. Local media published photos of Habre, in traditional white flowing robes, being led away by
security forces from his mansion in the capital, Dakar. Habre’s lawyers called the arrest a “kidnapping” and demanded his immediate release. “The arrest of the president has no legal basis. The defence was never informed of any summons. His arrest is therefore a violation of his rights,” their statement said. But rights groups welcomed the move. “The wheels of justice are turning”, said Reed Brody, counsel for Human Rights Watch who has worked with Habre’s victims since 1999. “After 22 years, Habre’s victims can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Visiting Senegal on Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama highlighted Senegal as an example in Africa for the independence of its judiciary.
President Barack Obama president has been hospitalized in critical condition for three weeks. Obama met Saturday with members of Mandela’s family, but did not visit the antiapartheid icon, a decision the White House said was in keeping with his family’s wishes. Obama’s weeklong trip, which opened last week in Senegal, marks his most significant trip to the continent since taking office. His scant personal engagement has come as a
disappointment to some in the region, who had high hopes for a man whose father was from Kenya. Obama visited Robben Island when he was a U.S. senator. But since being elected as the first black American president, Obama has drawn inevitable comparisons to Mandela, making Sunday’s visit particularly poignant. The president said he was eager to bring his family with him to the prison to teach them about Mandela’s role in overcoming white racist rule, first as an activist and later as a president who forged a unity government with his former captors. He told reporters Saturday he wanted to “help them to understand not only how those lessons apply to their own lives but also to their responsibilities in the future as citizens of the world, that’s a great privilege and a great honor.” Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security adviser, said Mandela’s vision was always going to
feature prominently in the speech. But his deteriorating health “certainly puts a finer point on just how much we can’t take for granted what Nelson Mandela did.” Harkening back to a prominent theme from Obama’s 2009 speech in Ghana — his only other trip to Africa as president — Obama will emphasize that Africans must take much of the responsibility for finishing the work started by Mandela and his contemporaries. “The progress that Africa has made opens new doors, but frankly, it’s up to the leaders in Africa and particularly young people to make sure that they’re walking through those doors of opportunity,” Rhodes said. Obama will speak at the University of Cape Town nearly 50 years after Robert F. Kennedy delivered his famous “Ripple of Hope” speech from the school. Kennedy spoke in Cape Town two years after Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.

Egyptians flood streets to demand Mursi ouster CAIRO (Reuters) Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians flooded into the streets on the first anniversary of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi’s inauguration yesterday to demand that he resign. Waving national flags and chanting “Get out!”, a crowd of more than 200,000 had massed by sunset on Cairo’s central Tahrir Square in the biggest demonstration since the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mursi’s predecessor, Hosni Mubarak. “The people want the fall of the regime!” they shouted, echoing the Arab Spring rallying cry that brought down Mubarak - this time yelling it not against an ageing dictator but against the first elected leader in Egypt’s 5,000 year recorded history. Many bellowed their anger at Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood, accused of hijacking the revolution and using electoral victories to monopolize power and push through Islamic law. Others have been alienated by a deepening economic crisis and
worsening personal security, aggravated by a political deadlock over which Mursi has presided. As the working day ended and 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) heat eased, more protesters converged through the eerily deserted streets of the shuttered city centre, while smaller crowds protested in several other areas of the capital. The veteran leaders of Egypt’s secular, liberal and left-wing opposition, including former chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog Mohamed ElBaradei and leftist presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, joined protest marches in Cairo. A Reuters journalist said hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters marched through the Mediterranean port of Alexandria, Egypt’s second city, and a military source reported protests in at least 20 towns around the country. Mursi, an engineering professor propelled to power by the Muslim Brotherhood, was monitoring events from the heavily guarded Qubba presidential palace, where an
official spokesman appealed for the demonstrations to remain peaceful. “Maintaining the security of Egypt is the common responsibility of everyone,” presidential spokesman Ehab Fahmy told a news conference. “Dialogue is the only way to reach mutual understanding and to reach national agreement around the different issues of our homeland.” Security sources said three Brotherhood offices were set on fire by demonstrators in towns in the Nile Delta - the latest in more than a week of sporadic violence in which hundreds have been hurt and several killed, including an American student. More than 20,000 supporters of Mursi congregated outside a Cairo mosque not far from another suburban presidential palace, where protest organizers planned a sit-in from Sunday evening. Interviewed by a British newspaper, Mursi voiced his determination to ride out what he sees as an

REUTERS/Mohamed Abd El Ghany undemocratic attack on his electoral legitimacy. But he also offered to revise the new, Islamist-inspired constitution, saying clauses on religious authority, which fuelled liberal resentment, were not his choice. He made a similar offer last week, after the head of the army issued a strong call for politicians to compromise. But the opposition dismissed it was too little too late. They hope Mursi will resign in the face of large numbers on the streets. “We call on Mohamed Mursi, who has completely lost the legitimacy of his power, to quickly respond to the clear will of the people which is plain today in all corners of revolutionary Egypt,” the June 30 movement, which organized a nationwide petition demanding his resignation,
said in a statement. Some Egyptians seem to believe the army might force the president’s hand, if not to quit then at least to make major concessions to the opposition. In Cairo, demonstrators stopped to shake hands and take photographs with soldiers guarding key buildings. At least six highranking police officers took to the Tahrir Square podium in support of demonstrators, a Reuters witness said. The armed forces used military helicopters to monitor the protests in Cairo and Alexandria and a military source said chief-of-staff and Defense Minister General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was following the situation from a special operations room. Mursi and the Brotherhood hope the protests will fizzle like
previous outbursts last December and in January. If they do not, some form of compromise, possibly arbitrated by the army, may be on the cards. Both sides insist they plan no violence but accuse the other - and agents provocateurs from the old regime - of planning it. The U.S.-equipped army shows little sign of wanting power but warned last week it may have to step in if deadlocked politicians let violence slip out of control. U.S. President Barack Obama called for dialogue and warned trouble in the most populous Arab nation could unsettle an already turbulent region. Washington has evacuated non-essential personnel and reinforced security at diplomatic missions. In an interview with London’s Guardian newspaper, Mursi repeated accusations that what he sees as entrenched interests from the Mubarak era are plotting to foil his attempt to govern. But he dismissed the demands that he give up and resign. If that became the norm, he said, “well, there will be people or opponents opposing the new president too, and a week or a month later, they will ask him to step down”. Liberal leaders say nearly half the voting population 22 million people - has signed a petition calling for new elections, although there is no obvious challenger to Mursi. The opposition, fractious and defeated in a series of ballots last year, hope that by putting millions on the streets they can force Mursi to relent and hand over to a technocrat administration that can organize new elections.

U.S. says oil market can cope with more Iran export cuts VIENNA (Reuters) - The top U.S. energy official said he believed the oil market could cope with any further reduction of Iran’s oil exports from the tightening of sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear program. U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz also said yesterday he expected a “fair amount of action” by his department in 2013 in evaluating applications by U.S. firms to export natural gas. Companies hoping to ship gas abroad have been frustrated by lengthy delays and rule changes as they await Department of Energy approval of their applications.
“I’m planning to go through them as rapidly as I can,” Moniz said in an interview in Vienna. As for Iran, U.S. lawmakers are embarking this summer on a campaign to deal a deeper blow to its diminishing oil exports, and analysts say the ultimate goal could be a near total cut-off. This could risk antagonizing China and India, the biggest remaining buyers of Iranian crude, and could push oil prices higher in a hit to the global economy. Moniz said Iranian exports were not now a “dominant player in the market”, and was offset by increased production in the

EU confronts U.S. over reports it spies on European allies BRUSSELS/BERLIN (Reuters) - The European Union has demanded that the United States explain a report in a German magazine that Washington is spying on the group, using strong language to confront its closest trading partner over its alleged surveillance activities. EU High Representative Catherine Ashton said yesterday the U.S. authorities was immediately contacted about a report in Der Spiegel magazine that the U.S. spy agency had tapped EU offices in Washington, Brussels and at the United Nations. “As soon as we saw these reports, the European External Action Service made contact with the U.S. authorities in both Washington D.C. and Brussels to seek urgent clarification of the veracity of and facts surrounding these allegations,” Ashton said in a statement. “The U.S. authorities have told us they are checking on the accuracy of the information released yesterday and will come back to us as soon as possible,” she said. France also asked for an explanation. “These acts, if confirmed, would be completely unacceptable,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said. The U.S. government said it would respond through diplomatic channels. “We will also discuss these issues bilaterally with EU member states,” a spokesperson for the Director of National Intelligence said. “While we are not going to comment publicly on specific alleged intelligence activities, as a matter of policy we have made clear that the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type gathered by all nations.” Panorama of Berlin is seen
Catherine Ashton is over the antenna cover … Panorama of Berlin is seen is over the antenna cover of Former National Security Agency (NSA) listen … Der Spiegel reported on Saturday that the National Security Agency bugged EU offices and gained access to EU internal computer networks, the latest revelation of alleged U.S. spying that has prompted outrage from EU politicians. The magazine followed up yesterday with a report that the U.S. agency taps half a billion phone calls, emails and text messages in Germany in a typical month, much more than any other European peer and similar to the data tapped in China or Iraq. It also uses data from Internet hubs in south and west Germany that organize data traffic to Syria and Mali. Revelations about the U.S. surveillance program, which was made public by fugitive former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, have raised a furor in the United States and abroad over the balance between privacy rights and national security. The extent to which Washington’s EU allies are being monitored has emerged
as an issue of particular concern. “If the media reports are correct, this brings to memory actions among enemies during the Cold War. It goes beyond any imagination that our friends in the United States view the Europeans as enemies,” said German Justice Minister Sabine L e u t h e u s s e r Schnarrenberger. “If it is true that EU representations in Brussels and Washington were indeed tapped by the American secret service, it can hardly be explained with the argument of fighting terrorism,” she said in a statement. Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office, which has authority in matters of national security, said it was looking into whether or not it should start an investigation. Criminal charges are expected to be filed, spokeswoman Frauke Koehler told Reuters. Germans are particularly sensitive about government monitoring, having lived through the Stasi secret police in the former communist East Germany and with lingering memories of the Gestapo of Hitler’s Nazi regime. Antennas of Former National Security Agency (NSA) listening … Antennas of Former National Security Agency (NSA) listening station are seen at the Teufelsberg hill … German Chancellor Angela Merkel has not commented on the latest report. Saudi Arabia. “So I would think that with further sanctions, the markets could be quite resilient to that,” said Moniz, who took office last month. From a technical point of view, “we can certainly manage a further reduction of Iranian exports”, he added. U.S. and European Union sanctions aimed at choking the flow of oil money into Iran and forcing Tehran to negotiate curbing its controversial nuclear program slashed its crude exports to 700,000 bpd in May, the lowest in decades, according to industry sources and tanker-tracking data. But crude prices are still lower than they were a year ago. Iran says its nuclear program is a peaceful bid to generate electricity. But Washington and its allies suspect Tehran is seeking the capability to make nuclear weapons. Both parties in the U.S. Congress are pressing for tougher sanctions, betting that a resurgence in U.S. oil output and signs of ample global supply will prevent prices from rising.
Moniz said there was “quite a bit of potential for increased production to offset any further reduction” of Iranian exports. Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama included a robust endorsement of natural gas use around the world as he sought to revive his stalled climate change agenda. But how much the United States will supply remained unclear as more than a dozen companies await approval to sell excess gas to countries such as India and Japan, where it will fetch higher prices than in the domestic market. The Energy Department has so far approved two projects to ship liquefied natural gas (LNG). “I’ve committed to start that process expeditiously, and I certainly expect to have substantial numbers of that (evaluation of export license applications) this year,” Moniz said. The surge in shale gas production has helped make the United States a leading natural gas producer and potentially a major exporter. But some manufacturers and
lawmakers have warned that a rapid push to export LNG could lead to a rise in U.S. gas prices and harm consumers and energy-intensive industries. Moniz said applications would be handled on a caseby-case basis and suggested he would not change the order in which his department rules on applications - a policy made in midstream that put some players at a disadvantage. “My intent is to move forward with the queue as it is spelled out,” he said, making clear he did not agree with a major LNG trade group, which said it was unlawful. “Our lawyers feel it is certainly completely rational.” If the Department of Energy waits about two months between each export decision, as Acting Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy Christopher Smith has signaled, projects near the end of queue might not get a DOE permit before late 2015. Asked if this was a realistic timetable, Moniz said: “I would not say it’s not unrealistic. But maybe we can do it faster.”

Kamla takes back electronic devices after disagreement with police Trinidad Express - Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar has not handed over or left any of her electronic communication devices with the police. This was confirmed Saturday by her attorney, Israel Khan SC, who said that no information was extracted from the Prime Minister’s computer or BlackBerry cellphone when she met with lead investigator in the emailgate probe, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mervyn Richardson, last Tuesday. Khan put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Richardson, who Khan said reneged on an earlier agreement that the devices would be analysed and extraction of information would be limited to the month of September 2012. In fact, in his letter to Khan dated June 20, Richardson said,” I acede to your request on the terms outlined,” that “investigators in this matter should only examine and inspect the electronic devices used by the Hon Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC for the month of Spetember 2012.” He also agreed in his letter that the inspection of the electronic devices should be conducted in the presence of the Prime Minister, her IT expert and Khan. September 2012 was the month in which 31 purported e-mails, related to the Section 34 fiasco, were alleged to have been exchanged
Kamla Persad-Bissessar between the Prime Minister, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, Minister of Local Government Suruj Rambachan and National Security adviser Gary Griffith, conspiring to commit illegal acts. “No, we did not leave anything with the police. I am sure you saw (the Prime Minister’s adviser) Barry Padarath leaving with the same box, which he came with,” (to the police station, Khan told the Sunday Express yesterday. The box was said to contain the Prime Minister’s computer and electronic devices. Khan said: “I had written to Richardson on behalf of my client stating clearly that the Prime Minister was willing to surrender all her devices for inspection, in front of her (Information Technology) expert, herself and her lawyer. “I also indicated that the inspection and extraction

would be confined to the period of when the alleged emails were sent in September 2012. “The Deputy Commissioner of Police acknowledged and said he would accede to her request, but said we must not interfere with the procedure, so we went there to surrender these things for inspection but they told us they wanted to keep the devices, put them in an evidence bag and lock them up and after they were examined, they would send them back to us.” Khan said he was shocked by this new turn of events. “I intervened and I told the DCP I am flabbergasted. I told him this would be a serious dereliction of duty on the part of the Prime Minister to hand over these devices to you. I told him that she would be acting irresponsibly to do that because sensitive information involving the State and other sovereign powers are on her computer. The Prime Minister also intervened and said that she had information on these devices with regard to regional and international matters and leaders such as (United States) President Barack Obama and the vice president of China. “We said ‘NO! No! NO!’ Even the Prime Minister seemed disappointed and told the police that she wants this enquiry to come to a close. She also said she would give the undertaking that she would write to the providers and would waive her rights of privacy for the month of September. Khan said Persad-
Bissessar told the police, ‘I cannot leave my devices here’”. “We never left the devices there. (PersadBissessar) took her BlackBerry and computer hard drive, everything. We said extract and copy it only for the month of September, but they said they are not doing that and they want everything,” Khan said. “I reminded them that we are not here as suspects, but as witnesses to help solve this case. I reminded the that they can only keep the devices if they believe that a person is a suspect and that the devices had been used to do commit a criminal offence,” he added. Khan says if in fact the Prime Minister is a suspect then the police don’t have to wait for any invitation but can raid Persad-Bissessar’s home and take the devices away from her. Once the providers say there is truth in the “e-mails”, Khan said the police can then search, seize and arrest. Khan asked: “How can they call big people, and watch us in our faces and change things just like that after they agreed not to seize their devices? The Sunday Express asked Khan what was the next step for the Prime Minister “Well, the police will have to agree that their IT expert will only extract information for the month of September,” he said. Khan said that tomorrow a formal letter will be sent to Richardson taking issue with statements made in the media, purporting to have come from Richardson about the pace of the investigation.

CAL acting chief executive quits
Robert Corbie Tr i n i d a d E x p re s s Acting chief executive of Caribbean Airlines (CAL) Robert Corbie has resigned with immediate effect from the cash-strapped national carrier. His resignation comes almost one month after the entire CAL board, chaired by Rabindra Moonan, was sacked by Finance Minister Larry Howai following what were described as breaches in governance. In a statement issued to CAL staff members at a b o u t 4 p . m . S a t u r d a y,
Corbie said he had tendered his resignation on Friday and the board had accepted it effective immediately. “After 29 years in the aviation industry during which I have seen, learned and experienced much, I close this chapter of my career, with a heavy heart but optimistic outlook. The decision to leave the airline that has been my virtual home for so many years has not come easily, but I do so with the knowledge that my legacy is the strong team at the helm of the operations of the company,” he said. Corbie, who has acted as chief executive since the departure of former chief executive Capt Ian Brunton in November 2010, observed that the c o m p a n y ’s fleet rationalisation, route stabilisation and competitive success are the tenets for a successful organisation. In a statement yesterday, CAL chairman Philip Marshall noted that the board agreed to Corbie’s request
Grenada to punish offensive online comments ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada (AP) — Legislators in Grenada have approved a bill that makes it a crime to offend people through websites such as Facebook and Twitter. The measure was approved as part of an electronic crimes bill passed late Friday in the tiny eastern
Caribbean island. The same bill also imposes penalties on other online activities including electronic stalking and identity theft. “We have problems when some use the technology to engage in mischief,” said Legal Affairs Minister Elvin Nimrod. “We have to put structures in place to ensure that persons and, in some cases, companies and characters are not tarnished.” According to the bill, which is the first of its kind in the Caribbean, complaints about offensive comments would be filed with police. A judge would then decide if the message was offensive. Those found guilty could be fined up to $37,000 or face three years in prison. “A person will be able to take that evidence of the posting and use it as evidence in the court,” Nimrod said. “People have to act responsibly to others.” The bill also makes it a crime to distribute child pornography, imposing fines of up to $111,000 and a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

Ecuador’s Correa says CARICOM heads to focus on Snowden’s fate in hands of Russia regional travel at 34th Heads of PORTOVIEJO, Ecuador (Reuters) - Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said yesterday the fate of former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden is in the hands of the authorities in Russia, where he is holed up in hope of obtaining asylum in the South American nation. Correa said his government cannot begin considering asylum for Snowden, wanted by Washington for leaking confidential information about a surveillance program, until he reaches Ecuador or an Ecuadorean embassy. The 30-year-old former National Security Agency contractor has not been able to leave the Moscow international airport. “It’s up to the Russian authorities if he can leave the Moscow airport for an Ecuadorean embassy,” Correa said in an interview with Reuters in the coastal city of Portoviejo. “He will be treated just like any other citizen even though he does not have a passport. We are clear that this is a special situation.” Correa’s comments provide further confirmation Ecuador is unlikely to help Snowden escape his current limbo. His passport has been revoked and countries around the world are under pressure not to let him continue his journey. Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected U.S. calls to expel Snowden to the United States and says Snowden should choose a destination and leave the Moscow airport as soon as possible. A presidential spokesman said the issue was not on Putin’s agenda and suggested it was being handled by Russia’s domestic intelligence agency. The asylum request has
Rafael Correa helped Correa boost his profile within the region and could help him take on the mantle of late Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chavez, who for more than a decade was Latin America’s loudest critic of Washington. “This may be the largest espionage case in this history of humanity,” Correa said. Correa, who has repeatedly confronted the United States since first being elected in 2006, said on Saturday he had a “cordial” phone conversation with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who asked that Ecuador not grant Snowden asylum. Correa said he would take into account the opinion of the U.S. government when making the decision. Correa on Sunday sent his regards to Snowden, whom he has thanked for revealing information about espionage efforts by the United States that go beyond its own borders. “Keep your spirits up and be brave,” Correa said. “You have to know how to assume your responsibilities, but if you acted in good conscience then you can be at peace with yourself.” The fallout over U.S. spying operations, the revelation of which has been a major embarrassment for
U.S. President Barack Obama, appeared to expand yesterday as the European Union confronted Washington on reports of spying by the National Security Agency.Ecuador said on Thursday it was pulling out of a U.S. trade benefits program in protest of pressure from the United States for having considered Snowden’s asylum request. “Ecuador will not be pressured or blackmailed by anyone,” Correa said. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, granted asylum last year in Ecuador’s London embassy, has not lost the country’s support despite apparently contributing to confusion over a travel document Ecuador ’s government issued to Snowden, Correa said. “In these crises when there is need to respond with urgency, it’s also possible to make mistakes. But Mr. Assange continues to enjoy our support, respect and appreciation,” he said. Ecuador ’s London consulate issued Snowden an unauthorized safepassage document, potentially as a result of communication with Assange, Correa said on Saturday. Assange had said that Snowden received refugee papers from the Ecuadorean government to secure safe passage as he fled Hong Kong for Russia, which Correa’s government had originally denied. Correa’s critics have in recent days accused him of letting Assange take charge of crucial foreign policy matters. Assange, who is wanted in Sweden for questioning on sexual assault allegations, has not been able to leave the London embassy because Britain will not give him safe passage.
Government Conference PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - CMC – The challenges of regional travel will be placed on the front burner at the upcoming meeting of heads of Government from across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The CARICOM meeting, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, will be held in Port of Spain July 4-6. In the aftermath of a Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in May, several recommendations were made and these will be discussed at the 34th CARICOM Heads of Government Conference. According to CARICOM, the Ministers will recommend the reintroduction of the Single Domestic Space (SDS) that was established for Cricket World Cup in 2007, as one of the measures to provide some relief to those traversing the Community. Among the features of the SDS that involved the participation of ten CARICOM Member States were freedom of movement for all domestic travelers and a

Maduro inherited leadership of the block after his predecessor, leftist firebrand Hugo Chavez, died in March, and Maduro won the election a month later to succeed him. Chavez founded PetroCaribe in 2005 as an alliance that allows its current 18 memberstates to buy oil from Venezuela at favorable rates and easy payment plans. “Hugo Chavez’s legacy will prevail,” added Maduro. In reaction to an application filed by the judicial manager’s legal representative in the Supreme Court Friday, BIPA said it was appalled that the court’s approval was being sought “to keep the final forensic audit sealed from the public of Barbados, giving only as its reason that ‘the report contains sensitive information about the operations of the respondent

BIPA said what was particularly noteworthy was “the hasty manner in which the submission to the court was made” as well as “the equally hasty expectation of the respondent, CLICO International Life Insurance Limited, that the order will be granted on Monday, having only been submitted one working day earlier on Friday, June 28”.

PetroCaribe leaders agree to focus efforts on boosting trade MANAGUA (Reuters) - Delegations from over a dozen countries that are members of the Venezuelan-led oil alliance PetroCaribe agreed on Saturday to adopt a framework for promoting trade within the block. At the close of the eighth-annual PetroCaribe summit hosted by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega in this Central American capital, leaders agreed to focus efforts on boosting trade in regional transportation, communication, agriculture, tourism and social service projects. “The journey has been very encouraging because in short order ... we have organized the essential components of a PetroCaribe economic zone,” said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro at the close of the summit.
Special Visa stamped at the first port of entry for travelers from outside the Region to allow hassle free movement among the participating SDS states. COTED also agreed to recommend to the Heads of Government that they support the proposed LIAT application to the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for the required financing to meet the costs of its re-fleeting exercise. “I think that we have to try and find a solution to the transportation problems that are plaguing us in the Community, not only in terms of inter-regional travel, but sometimes through the
Region. Our tourism depends on it, our trade and services…depend on transportation so we have to find solutions to our issues,” said CARICOM SecretaryGeneral, Irwin LaRocque. At this upcoming conference, the CARICOM Heads will welcome Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as well as Danilo Medina, President of the Dominican Republic and Teodoro Obiang Nguema, President of Equatorial Guinea. “President Maduro’s visit is important in the context of the region’s relations with Venezuela–an important player in hemispheric affairs,” said a statement from Trinidad’s acting Communications Minister Anil Roberts. Maduro is to visit on July 6, one day after Venezuela celebrates Independence Day. The Venezuelan Declaration of Independence was signed on July 5, 1811. Among the speakers at the opening of the conference on July 3rd is Michel Martelly, President of the Republic of Haiti. On July 4th, there will be a reenactment of the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas.

Djokovic, Murray and And not a (professional) Serena lead unfamiliar cast punch was thrown!!
Tents askew, dismantled chairs and a muddy field are what were left after the rains had subsided. On many occasions cricket fans have had to bear the disappointment of truncated matches or in some cases, the abortion of play after heavy rains had subsided. Sometimes, after the sun manages to peek out from behind the dark clouds and the subsequent mopping up period, officials resort to the Duckworth/Lewis system and fans eventually see some cricket. With no such system in boxing, fans that had travelled from Georgetown and other
parts of the country were forced to return home without seeing a punch in the professional segment of the 28th edition of Guyana Fight Night (GFN) at the Uitvlugt Community Centre, West Coast Demerara Saturday evening last. This was after a mini storm hit the West Coast just after the amateur segment had concluded and sent the erected tents crumbling to the ground with light debris sailing through the air and patrons scrambling to safety.
Jeffrey cops the senior... From page 39 (Roraima Bikers Club) and Gary Benjamin (Flying Ace Cycle Club) in that order. Newton and Kennard Lovell vehemently voiced their dissatisfaction at the manner in which the GCF dealt with the race especially the veterans, noting that they had to expend extra energy due to the lack of guidance at the turn back point. While Thompson apologised to the riders, she was adamant that all the competitors should have also been familiar with the turn back point pointing out that the information was published in the daily newspapers apart from being circulated to all the clubs. Ms. Thompson did state that efforts will be made in future to have adequate road marshals, neutral time keepers as the GCF aim to take the event to another level. Some cyclists were also disgruntled that the Championship Jersey’s were not available for distribution yesterday. Thompson informed that there was a mix up with the shipment of same and it will be handed over at a subsequent date. The first to third place finishers at the Time Trials and yesterday’s Road Race were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals.
However, fans were not totally disappointed as they were able to witness the amateur segment of the card as the inclement weather held over that period. It was during the half hour intermission that the heavens opened and torrents of rain, accompanied by an exceptionally strong breeze disrupted activities. The tent erected over the ring defiantly stood its ground but several other small structures set up to facilitate the spectators caved in from the onslaught. Fans then scuttled for safety under the southern section of the building even as the venue experienced a mild ‘Gilbert.’ In the end, the organizers were forced to abort the card while the disappointed patrons and equally disappointed Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) officials and boxers were forced to leave the venue without a (professional) punch being thrown. President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, was also disappointed by the turn of events. He said that he knew that the rains were a threat but made every effort to counteract the situation by setting up the tents. He said that his executives will make every effort attempt to book the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and once successful, will hold the card within a week. Meanwhile, the hyped up boxers left the venue very disappointed while their equally hyped up fans were forced to leave the venue without seeing a punch—a professional punch that is.
LONDON (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Serena Williams will head a cast of fresh-faced hopefuls today as Wimbledon heads into the second week which will be a Federer-free zone for the first time in 11 years. A second week which had promised backto-back blockbuster matches after Murray, seven-times champion Roger Federer and 2008 and 2010 winner Rafa Nadal had been thrown together in the same half of the draw, will instead have a distinctly unfamiliar look to it following an unforgettable week of shocks. Gone are Federer, Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka - all former world number ones, all grand slam champions and who between them own 35 major trophies. Instead, the second week line-up includes an array of characters who had turned up at the All England Club expecting to play a supporting role but have been thrust into the limelight of a last-16 appearance. French duo Kenny de Schepper and Adrian Mannarino, Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz, Italy’s Karin Knapp and Puerto Rican Monica Puig are ranked outside the world’s top 20, have never won a main-tour title and had never previously reached the fourth round of a major. Yet they all stand to pocket the biggest checks of their lives - at least $159,000 - after a trail of destruction decimated the field at the grass court major. “It’s good for change in a way because top players are always expected to reach the final stages of major events. When it doesn’t happen, it’s a big surprise,” Djokovic told reporters. “It’s a bit (of a) strange feeling not to have Federer or Nadal at the second week of a major. In the last 10 years, it was always one of them. But there’s some (other) players who have been playing great tennis. I think it’s interesting also to see new faces for the crowd, for (the) tennis world in general.” Nowhere is that more evident than in the bottom half of the draw where the highest seed world number two Murray can face before a hotly anticipated final against top-ranked Djokovic is his next opponent - Russian oddball and 20th seed Mikhail Youzhny. The Russian is not averse to seeking outside help when things are not going his way as 12 months ago while he was being thrashed by Federer he went over to Centre Court’s Royal Box and asked American great Andre Agassi how to beat the Swiss. If he was to repeat the cheeky request to any of the 15,000 fans who will be packed into Centre Court on Monday, it will fall on deaf years as he will be playing the man Britain expects to end the host nation’s 77-year search

Andy Murray (USA Today) for a men’s champion. HOME INTEREST In fact, Britmania will reach a 15-year peak as for the first time since 1998, home interest will still be alive in both singles draws on the second Monday. Laura Robson has finally started to live up to the promise she showed five summers ago when she won the junior Wimbledon title and will be backed to reach her first major quarter-final as she will be taking on Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, an opponent ranked eight places below the British number one. While Robson’s odds of winning the title are being slashed on a daily basis by excited British bookmakers, Djokovic remains the man to beat in the men’s draw. He has yet to drop a set and has surrendered a miserly 29 games, two fewer than Murray, in his three matches to date. In the pick of the fourth-round showdowns, he is facing renaissance man Tommy Haas. Woman’s holder Williams is another member of the over-30s club and at 31, there is no doubt she is playing the best tennis of her life. Winner of three of the last four slams, world number one Williams is hurtling towards grand slam title number 17, and sixth at Wimbledon, and so far no one has come close to derailing her. Up next for her is Sabine Lisicki. The German beat Sharapova en route to the last eight 12 months ago and made it all the way to the semis in 2011 but only the very brave would put money on her replicating the feat this year.

2013 Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship
Mahdia crowned champs of Region 8 Defending Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) champions, Paramakatoi, relinquished their title to Mahdia after losing 2-1 when the 2013 Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship continued on Saturday, at the Mahdia Community Centre ground. Played in soggy conditions both teams looked positive from the start as they created several attacking incursions in each half that warmed the crowd to what was in store for the rest of the encounter. Paramakatoi appeared more settled in the conditions and used the aerial route to perfection since ground passing due to the heavy outfield proved difficult. Mahdia, however, had an early stroke of luck when a clearance by the Paramakatoi backline got stuck in a pool of water, thereby allowing Mahdia’s Stephen Salvador to race onto the ball and hammer a fierce shot into the top right hand corner of the net in the ninth minute of play. Clearly needing to
recuperate from the early setback, Paramakatoi’s attacking third upped the ante and attacked with commitment as their next five attempts tested the Mahdia goalkeeper, who either parried it into touch for a corner or simply had to pull off a brilliant save. However, Paramakatoi’s consistent barrage, coupled with the precision striking opened up an opportunity when Mahdia’s keeper ventured to the right corner of the eighteen yard box to clear a ball only to be dispossessed by Maurice Gomes, who tucked the ball into the back of the net in the 29th minute to level the proceedings. The two teams then battled the rest of the half without scoring to leave the game deadlocked at 1-1 at the break. On the resumption, both teams showed admirable fighting qualities as they battled for supremacy with the first alarm coming from Paramakatoi that netted a goal 15 minutes into the second half play only for it to be deemed an offside goal.
Moments later it was Paramakatoi’s turn to be scared after a shot deflected by the keeper struck underneath the crossbar, but luckily rebounded back into play and was subsequently cleared by the defence. With both teams battling for the upperhand and Paramakatoi showing great passing skills, Mahdia sunk the hearts of supporters of the defending champs through a play that begun down the right flank, before ending up in the back of the net in the 89th minute courtesy of Keon Mackenzie to put Mahdia up 2-1 which was good enough to ensure that they were crowned new champions of Region Eight. Meanwhile, at the presentation ceremony which was held immediately after, Co-ordinator of the tournament Lavern FraserThomas congratulated both teams and disclosed that Mahdia will reach the winners of Region One in the play-off round for a chance to get to the quarterfinal. The game will be played in Region One.

Brazil dominate Spain to win Confederations Cup RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Fred scored two goals, Neymar added another and host Brazil defeated world champion Spain 3-0 to win the Confederations Cup on Sunday night as protesters clashed with riot police outside Maracana Stadium. Brazil, a five-time world champion, beat the reigning world and European champion and ended Spain’s 29-game, three-year winning streak in competitive matches. Fred put Brazil ahead in the second minute, Neymar doubled the lead in the 44th with his fourth goal of the tournament and Fred added his fifth in the 47th. Brazil, which won its third straight Confederations Cup, has not lost a competitive home match since 1975. Spain, which had not lost a competitive game since its 2010 World Cup opener against Switzerland, has a miserable night. Sergio Ramos sent a penalty kick wide in the 55th and defender Gerard Pique was ejected by Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers with a straight red card for fouling Neymar in the 68th. Eliminated in the quarterfinals of the last two World Cups, the Selecao was hoping for a boost as it prepares to host the World Cup next year for the first time since 1950. Having not played a competitive match since the 2011 Copa America, Brazil had slipped to 22nd in the FIFA ranking, between Ghana and Mali.
Spain, ranked first for the past 20 months, is the most accomplished national team of the 21st century, winning its first World Cup in 2010 between titles in the 2008 and 2012 European Championships. But in the stadium that will host the World Cup final on July 14 next year, Brazil dominated La Furia Roja. “The champion is back,” chanted the crowd of more than 73,000 people at the renovated Maracana. It also didn’t take long before the fans — in a sea of yellow jerseys — started teasing the Spaniards, chanting “Wanna play, wanna play!? Brazil will teach you.” Spain had been unbeaten in 26 matches overall, including friendlies, since a 10 loss to England in London in 2011 and had outscored opponents 69-11 in competitive matches since the loss to Switzerland in South Africa. But Spain had not played Brazil since a 1999 exhibition, and they hadn’t met in a competitive match since the Selecao’s 1-0 win in the first round of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Fred opened the scoring after a cross into the area by Hulk in the second minute. The ball bounced off Neymar near the far post and Fred, who had fallen while trying to reach for the cross, shot with his right foot while still on the ground. Brazil added to the lead after Neymar exchanged with
Oscar and then sent a powerful left-footed shot over goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Fred got the final goal from just inside the area, sending a low shot to the far corner. Hulk started the move with a pass to Neymar, but the striker let it go as Fred came running behind him. Spain was awarded the penalty kick after Marcelo fouled Jesus Navas inside the area. Ramos, who skied a penalty kick for Real Madrid against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League semifinals, sent this one wide. Spain’s best chance before the penalty came with Pedro Rodriguez in the 41st, when he entered the area clear from defenders on a breakaway. His low shot beat goalkeeper Julio Cesar, but David Luiz came rushing in and slid in front of the goal line just in time to deflect the ball over the crossbar. There were protests outside the stadium during the match, with police using rubber bullets and tear gas to keep demonstrators from getting too close. A wave of anti-government protests has swept across Brazil in recent weeks, and many affected the Confederations Cup host cities as demonstrators complained of the costs of hosting the World Cup. On the field, it was a heated match from the start, with players from both teams pushing and shoving each other a few times. Even the substitutes got into a shouting match.
BLAKE OUT!
To seek surgery for ‘sensitive’ injury - Official Jamaica Observer - TOP Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake will not defend his 100 metres title at the World Championship in Athletics in Moscow, Russia next August, the Sunday Observer understands. Blake, who goes by the alias ‘the Beast’, pulled up lame before Jamaica’s National Athletic Championships, which serve as a trial for athletes hoping to represent this north Caribbean island at various international meets. “He is definitely out of the World Championship ... he will not be part of Jamaica’s squad,” a senior athletics official told the Sunday Observer Saturday. “Yohan will have to do surgery soon, so there is no way that he can make the team. The injury is so sensitive that even if he is a
real ‘Beast’ he cannot recover from it in time for the World Champs,” the official said. However, president of the Jamaica Administrative Athletic Association (JAAA) Dr Warren Blake said that he could not comment on the matter as he had not heard from the sprinter’s camp. “I have no comment at this time on that issue,” Dr Blake said. Blake, 23, no relation to the JAAA boss, won the gold medal in the 100 metres at the 2011 World Championship in the South Korean city of Daegu, after pre-race favourite, fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt, false-started in a major event for the first time in his career. Bolt’s compulsory withdrawal paved the way for the St James-born Blake to win his first major
international medal when he left the field behind, as he took the event in 9.92 seconds over American Walter Dix (10.08) and veteran Kittitian, Kim Collins (10.09). There were early signs that Blake would not be ready for Moscow when his agent, Cubie Seegobin, issued a news release on June 18 saying: “Yohan’s coach (Glen Mills) is not satisfied with the progress of his injury, and hence his level of fitness will not allow him to compete at this time. We will continue to assess the situation and reevaluate as we approach the World Championships.” Blake did not have to run the 100 metres at the National Championship to qualify for the event at the World Championship, as he automatically got a bye as defending champion.

Kaieteur News
West Indies vs. India, Tri-series, Kingston
Profligate West Indies escape with thrilling victory ESPNcrinfo - The pursuit of the money shot nearly cost West Indies what should have been an easy win, and it took a 10-run stand for the last wicket in front of a nervous full house to end India’s nine-match winning streak in international cricket. With balls remaining in the chase of 230 out of equation, Kemar Roach and Tino Best, who had taken two wickets each previously, showed the more accomplished batsmen how to finish the chase off - they added 10 in 4.2 overs and still had 14 balls to spare - but it can also be argued that it was the free-flowing approach that put West Indies in comfortable positions in the first place in a chase that oscillated between the ridiculously easy and the plain ridiculous. If West Indies kept India down to 229 for 7 through sustained pressure with the ball on a damp pitch, their response with the bat knew no caution: six of the nine wickets they lost were followed by boundaries immediately after, and five of their wickets were a result of extravagant shots when all they needed was 15 more minutes of sensible batting. The result was a thrilling
finish where dot balls were cheered on vigorously, where three men around the bat became a regular sight, the annoying horns were almost all put away, and advice flowed freely from the engrossed crowd. The teams could do with advice: they were both missing their captains. West Indies lost Dwayne Bravo to a groin injury before the match, and Kieron Pollard left behind three former captains to make his leadership debut. MS Dhoni injured himself while batting, and didn’t take field. India’s loss turned out to be more crucial: stand-in keeper Dinesh Karthik’s gloves were visibly late to an R Ashwin offbreak with Johnson Charles stranded down the wicket. What should have been a stumping to make it 198 for 8 now went for what was adjudicated four runs. Replays didn’t show an edge, and even if there was one it was not significant enough for Karthik to be so far away from the line of the ball. It shouldn’t take away from Charles’ 97, though, who scored 60 in his last match against India. Charles is not the most orthodox batsman, but he tends to put oppositions off.
He has a low back lift, and decides late, almost too late, whether to move forward or back, and which shot to play. Somehow, though, he makes the best decisions on his day, which it was today. For company for most of his effort, Charles had Darren Bravo, who can be quiet the opposite: high back lift, a certain flair, a reliance on the early picking of the length, and a tendency to get better with the length of the innings. Charles broke away early. His response to Chris Gayle’s wicket, caught at short cover in the second over, was three straight fours hit straight down the ground off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the third over. His response to the next two wickets - Devon Smith and Marlon Samuels in the next two overs was to cart Bhuvneshwar and Umesh Yadav for three more fours. Sometime later, he took his first single. It took him to 25, and West Indies to 42 for 2 in ninth over. With the pitch easing out, India were now reliant on spin, but Charles and Bravo attacked India’s magic man, Ravindra Jadeja, immediately. Each of them hit a six in Jadeja’s first two overs, and it was down to Ashwin now, who was introduced in the 15th over. He troubled the
batsmen immediately, but they both broke free, and brought up their fifties. However, in what was to become the trend, Bravo fell to Ashwin when West Indies were headed towards an impregnable position. He went to hit a short ball, was done in by the stopping of it, and ended up dragging it to leg, leaving the last six 88 to get. Charles responded with his fourth six, this one brought up with an inside-out six hit off an Ashwin carrom ball that he picked early. West Indies were now 155 for 4 in the 30th over. Wickets kept falling at the other end, with West Indies possibly looking for a bonus point. Pollard followed one wide delivery, Denesh Ramdin swung wildly, and India had been let back in at 161 for 6. Darren Sammy now launched a counterattack - 29 off 26 laced with three sixes but he, too, left the job unfinished when he tried to hit Ishant Sharma for a third boundary in 37th over. Soon, Charles was reprieved. He even tried to farm the strike, but on 97 with mid-off up, he couldn’t hold himself back, and left the game open once again. West Indies still needed 19 runs, India sensed the win now, but Roach and Sunil Narine knocked nine of those runs. Time, then, for another rush of blood to the head. Narine, this time, drive uppishly, and straight to mid-on. All India had to do was keep the field and hold on to their catches. West Indies were throwing this game. Not with Roach and Best, though. They batted like their lives depended on this knock, and drop by drop they took West Indies home. Looking at the celebrations from the crowd, it seemed all that preceded was forgotten. It wasn’t. West Indies crowds can be deceptive that way. They had seen a near professional performance with the ball earlier in the day. On a pitch that provided some variable tennis-ball for the quicks and turn for the spinners, they bowled with hostility and aggression to keep India down. Roach and Sammy set the agenda with four toporder wickets for 82 runs in their 20 overs, but they were aided well by the spinners, and Best, who was replacing the injured Ravi Rampaul. Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina fought hard, but both fell short of damaging their reputations.

Sarwan hopes CPL will be developed into a long term event
Ramnaresh Sarwan West Indies middle order batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan said he hopes the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will develop into a long term event. Sarwan was speaking during a CPL press conference held on Saturday at Duke’s Lodge Hotel in Kingston.
Sarwan stated that the tournament will be an exciting one and it is a good opportunity for the younger players to showcase their talent. “It’s similar to the Indian Premier League and our players can gain knowledge from the overseas players. It is also a good chance for the youngsters to develop themselves,” added Sarwan. Sarwan thinks Guyana have a very good chance of winning the competition. We have some exciting players and I think we can go all the way,” he said. Sarwan indicated that his goal is to assist the other players. “I will try to help the younger players and support my team mates, of course I want to score runs and help my team win,” Sarwan concluded. The Caribbean Premier League is expected to start on July 30 in Barbados.
Athletics meet further postponed, new date to be set The current inclement weather now sweeping Guyana continues to have a devastating effect on most outdoor activities across Guyana and one such activity that continues to be affected is the Rose Hall Town Athletics Club one day athletics meet which was planned for yesterday. The meet which was previously scheduled for Monday 27th May as part of Guyana’s Independence activities and dubbed a “day of athletics” was previously postponed due to the inclement weather. The day’s activities were scheduled to include a 5K road race and day of sprints in commemoration of Guyana’s 47th Independence anniversary. The 5k event was scheduled to begin outside
the Sparkle Disco at Ulverston and end with a lap around the Area H Ground in Rose Hall Town, while the day of sprints track meet was schedule for the Area H Ground. However early morning rain and a wet outfield left the organisers with no alternative but to postpone the meet which would have included races for 100M, 200M, 400M and 4x100M relay events in the U14,16,18,20,25 and over25 categories for both male and females. Athletes from West Berbice, New Amsterdam Canje, Fyrish, Rose Hall Town No 53, Skeldon, and Corriverton including other areas of Central and Upper Corentyne were scheduled to participate. The new date will be set when the weather improves. (Samuel Whyte)

After no play on the opening day at GCC and DCC, play was also called off yesterday leaving the match a one-day affair at both venues. Demerara play Berbice at Bourda, while the President’s X1 take on defending one-day Champions Essequibo at the DCC and both matches are scheduled to commence at 09:30 on the final day. If there is no play today then Demerara will emerge champions in the four-team tournament.
