Where your views make the news
Letters... Where your views make the news
A splintering strike DEAR EDITOR, It was interesting to observe the TV news clipping wherein a representative of the Women Miners Association commented on the impact of the strike by employees of GGMC for better pay on the mining industry. Curiously the male version of the miners’ representation manfully recanted any such measurable impact. He since reportedly said that it was too early to tell. But his counterpart was not so conservative, particularly in her support of the strikers and their objectives. She expressed appreciation of the male presence amongst the many female placard-holders. In her harangue she alluded to her sense of discrimination by the governing officials in the Ministry in their reluctance to settle the dispute with the GPSU, when in similar circumstances in the sugar industry, GAWU’s Membership was given a more positive response not so long ago. From an attentive viewer’s viewpoint, the comparison afforded an interesting connection of dots. The Industrial Relations Officer of the GPSU was earlier recorded as noting the indifference of the Ministry (as distinct from the Commission) in wanting to break the protest. If this perception is to be believed, it is in fact a curious construct whereby the Union sees the legally empowered employer – The Commission and Board – as not being the relevant decision-maker responsible for the current impasse. Forgivably, one is reminded of the relative emasculation of the various Board memberships of GuySuco over the years, whose position on management policies has scarcely, if ever, been articulated. In this connecting of dots it may not be inappropriate for stakeholders to refer to aspects of the legislation which established the semiautonomous agency described as The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. Therein a distinction is made between the powers of the Commission (er) and that of the Minister. It is within such context that the present imbroglio deserves to be examined. The point was clearly implied that a cash-strapped GuySuco was facilitated with one or more subventions to meet commitments like pay
increases and incentives to sugar workers; while a fully self-financed GGMC (who may have initially subsidised the Ministry startup) is not allowed to exercise its autonomy to pay, not only its long service employees, but also the scores of new recruits absorbed since the recent ministerial dispensation. The irony of all this lies in the conundrum that all employees, except the Commissioner, are bona fide members of the operative Union – GPSU. So that the chord struck is one of organizational schizophrenia, where levels of management staff are crossing swords with their seniors, who are reported to be without a mandate to make conclusive negotiable decisions. Their interests also are being emasculated, by other ethereal decision-making – all, according to the Women Miners Association, hinting of socio-cultural considerations. It is not as if, however, the pristine management have any other to blame but themselves. The proposals for salary increases and adjustments emerged out of recommendations made by a Consultancy Report since 2009. They must therefore accept responsibility for a delay which must be shared by the Union. In a sense, therefore, both parties are culpable and have visited this travesty on themselves. It is one also that the Ministry of Labour must display more than its normal mundanity to resolve. As a matter of interest the following extracts from Cap. 65:09 Guyana Geology and Mines Commission 4. (3) The Commission shall be responsible for – (a) The enforcement of the conditions of mining and dredging leases, concessions, or exclusive permissions, or any licence, permit, or mineral agreement granted, or entered into, or deemed to be granted or

entered into, under the Mining Act; (b) The collection and recovery of all rents, fees, royalties, penalties, levies, tolls and charges payable under the Mining Act and any other revenues of the Commission: (c) Hall marking Provided that the Commission may, in relation to the collection and recovery of royalties payable in respect of gold under the Mining Act, by writing and subject to such terms and conditions as may be agreed upon between the Guyana Gold Board and the Commission, appoint the Guyana Gold Board to be its agent for the collection and recovery of such royalties. And 5. (1) The Commission may employ at such remuneration and on such other terms and conditions it thinks fit (including the payment of pensions, gratuities or other like benefits by reference to the service of its officers and other employees) a Commissioner, a Secretary and such other officers and other employees as the Commission considers necessary for the purpose of carrying out its functions: (2) The Commissioner shall be the chief executive officer of the Commission and, subject to any general or special directions of the Commission, shall be responsible for the execution of the policy of the Commission and answerable therefor to the Commission. Is there need for another CCJ Judge? DEAR EDITOR, Although only three countries have abolished appeals to the Privy Council, the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission (RJLSC) has appointed a judge to replace Justice Desiree Bernard, who went into retirement on March 1 last year. One would have thought that since the workload is not as much as was expected, the regional court would have continued to function until more countries join the Appellate Division of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). However the CCJ in its original jurisdiction, interprets and applies the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (which established the Caribbean Community) and is an international court with compulsory and exclusive jurisdiction in respect of the interpretation of the treaty. I have been informed that despite the fact that most countries have not yet come fully on board, the judges are still busy dealing with matters in its original jurisdiction. It is very disappointing that only Guyana, Barbados, and Belize have severed ties with the London-based Privy Council, and Dominica’s Parliament approved a Bill in July 2014 to make the CCJ the
final court. I wonder what the delay is for that country to go join, when the British government gave the green light a year ago for that OECS country to sever ties with the Privy Council. The CCJ was established in 2001, and it is very unfortunate that the other Caricom countries have not yet severed the apron string from the Privy Council, despite the fact that Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica gained political independence from Britain in 1962, more than 52 years ago. In fact those two countries were in the forefront in establishing the regional court. They are now singing a different tune. Although Jamaica is contributing the most financially, it seems no longer interested, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister had intimated that she was considering abolishing criminal appeals to the Privy Council, but recently disclosed that she will seek a mandate from the electorate by way of referendum.
St. Lucia’s Prime Minister said his country will join, but no concrete step has been taken to do so in this regard. A referendum seeking a mandate from the electorate in St Vincent and the Grenadines to join failed five years ago, because in my view it was loaded with other changes to the Constitution, including the removal of the Queen as Head of State. Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts/Nevis indicated that they were interested, but they are still to put the machinery in motion. The new judge named is Justice Maureen Rajnauth Lee, an Appellate Court judge of her homeland, Trinidad and Tobago, who is a brilliant jurist and copped first class honours which she gained in her LLB degree - a prerequisite to law school. Incidentally she was a colleague of mine at the Hugh Wooding Law School. She takes up her appointment in April this year. She will join six other judges including President Sir Dennis Byron. FAA to investigate CAL/JetBlue near crash at JFK
Caribbean Airlines Aviation authorities said that it would have been catastrophic if the American aircraft JetBlue had collided with a Caribbean Airlines (CAL) aircraft. The CAL flight had ended up in the path of the Jet Blue flight as it was taking off. The Texas-bound carrier which was leaving the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York was able to brake just in time to avoid slamming into the Trinidad and Tobago-based CAL plane. The CAL flight had left Guyana for the United States just after 19:00hours last Saturday. According to information out of the US, the JetBlue plane was given the go ahead to take off from the NY port and was pulling full speed down the run way when it saw another plane in direct path of the outgoing flight. The CAL flight had just landed at
JFK and was taxiing to its parking position. Officials said that there seemed to be an issue with communication since the CAL pilot was told by the US Control Tower to hold its crossing of the runway, but there was no response. It was said that the CAL pilot was on the wrong radio frequency and never heard the Air Traffic Controller ’s instructions. The two planes were said to be no less than 2,800 feet away from each other when the JetBlue flight came to a halt. With a full fuel tank onboard the JetBlue flight, international experts reasoned that it would have been just a matter of two to three seconds that the plane would have been at a speed where it would have been unable to stop. It was stated that the
JetBlue Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. From their Piarco base in Trinidad, CAL officials have also said that they too are investigating the matter. In a public release posted on social media on Sunday, the airline said that it is concerned about the “alleged” incident which they are viewing at this time as “allegations.” The company said, “We are concerned to hear of an alleged incident highlighted on internet news sites regarding JetBlue 1295 and BW flight 526 on Saturday night (17th January) at JFK Airport, New York.” Caribbean Airlines said it “takes allegations of this type very seriously, and is committed to working with the industry authorities to investigate all the facts.”
They said that they are in the process of investigating and compiling the facts surrounding “this allegation” in cooperation with all Regulatory agencies. The company stated further that “in the interim – Caribbean Airlines is complying with all incident management procedures included within its Safety Management System and adjunct regulations.” They said they are committed to the safety of all passengers. Previous reports out of the United States have shown several near miss incidents like the one experienced by CAL and Jet Blue; so much so that authorities had been planning to implement runway lights to reduce their occurrence. PIX 11 online news had highlighted that in May of 2014, about three near misses had occurred within a week.
Another incident last September saw a Southwest Airlines flight filled with passengers colliding with a JetBlue plane while trying to depart Boston’s Logan International Airport. The Southwest Boeing 737 damaged its wingtip by dragging it into the JetBlue Airbus 320’s right horizontal stabilizer as it backed away from its gate. Last November, a Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet from London to New York also had a close call with a radiocontrolled drone as it made its final approach to John F. Kennedy Airport on its final approach. Officials in New York had told ABC’s Eyewitness News following Saturday’s incident, that JFK was scheduled to get new runway lighting system that would prevent, through flashing red lights, such occurrences. The
red in-pavement lights would illuminate when it is not safe to enter, cross or take off from the runway. But Airport sources told the foreign news agency that FAA has not begun to install the safety lights, one year after it was announced. A retired commercial airline pilot, Bob Ober had told the news agency, that “90 percent of these things (near misses) can be eliminated with technology.” Eyewitness News reported that nine airports across the US already have the safety lights installed, while some ports like JFK and Newark where one of the near misses occurred in May last year, are awaiting the installation of the lights. Officials say that near miss incidents such as Saturday’s usually boil down to a pilot or Air Traffic Control error.

UK plea to imams to fight extremism draws charge of ISLAMOPHOBIA
Britain’s Secretary of State for Communities Eric Pickles and Home Secretary Theresa May hold up signs reading “I am Jewish” during a Board of Deputies of British Jews event in London LONDON (Reuters) Muslim groups accused the British government of copying the language of the far right on Monday and of stoking Islamophobia after ministers wrote to imams asking them to explain to Muslims how Islam is compatible with being British. In a letter to over 1,000 imams last Friday, Eric Pickles, the minister for local government and communities, asked them to explain to Muslims how Islam can be “part of British identity”, arguing they had a duty to do more to fight extremism and root out anyone preaching hatred. Muslim groups said the letter unfairly singled them out. “The letter has all the hallmarks of very poor judgment which feeds into an Islamophobic narrative, which feeds into a narrative of us and them,” Tahla Ahmad of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) told Sky News. The row, which underscores tensions between the
government and Muslims, comes as security forces warn that an attack on Britain by Islamist militants is highly likely. Jews and Muslims say they are fearful, for different reasons, after the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris. Harun Khan, deputy secretary general of the MCB, said his organisation would be writing to the government to complain. “Is Mr Pickles seriously suggesting, as do members of the far right, that Muslims and Islam are inherently apart from British society?” said Khan. Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, said the letter was patronising, factually incorrect, and “typical of the government only looking at Muslims through the prism of terrorism and security.” Britain’s 2.8 million Muslims have been mostly praised by politicians for peacefully condemning the Paris shootings, though Sajid Javid, the most senior Muslim in government, has said
Muslims have “a special burden” to track down extremists. In the letter, Pickles said imams needed to help the government do something it couldn’t achieve on its own: explain how Islamic faith can be part of British identity. “We must show our young people, who may be targeted, that extremists have nothing to offer them ... show them these men of hate have no place in our mosques,” the letter said. Prime Minister David Cameron defended the letter as “the most reasonable, sensible” one Pickles could have written. “Anyone frankly reading this letter who has a problem with it, I think really has a problem,” he said. Fiyaz Mughal, director of Tell Mama, an organisation that monitors anti-Muslim attacks, said it had registered a slight increase in incidents since the Paris killings, with death threats and hate mail sent to London mosques.
Separatists renew attack on airport as Russia and Ukraine bicker (Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists renewed attacks on Ukrainian forces at an airport complex in the east on Monday after Kiev launched a mass operation to reclaim lost ground there that Russia called a “strategic mistake”. Ukrainian officials said three soldiers had been killed and 66 wounded over the past 24 hours, during which they said they had returned battle lines at the airport outside Donetsk to the status quo under a much violated international peace plan. Russia expressed concern at what it called escalation by Kiev and published its own peace plan on Monday in the form of a letter from President Vladimir Putin to Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, which it said
Poroshenko had rejected. “It’s the biggest, even strategic mistake of the Ukrainian authorities to bank on a military solution to the crisis,” Interfax quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin as saying. “This may lead to irreversible consequences for Ukrainian statehood.” In Kiev, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said Ukrainian intelligence had confirmed Russian cross-border arms deliveries to the separatists were continuing. “Tanks, howitzers, Grad systems, Smerch, Buk,” Yatseniuk told a joint news conference with Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, listing Russian-made missile systems which he said were being channelled to the separatists.

PARLIAMENT IS NO FOOTSTOOL If Parliament has become the footstool of the President and his party, then what does this assessment say about the opposition parties which collectively hold a one-seat majority over the National Assembly—one component of Parliament? What does it say about the vigilance of the majority opposition to safeguard this important representative institution? What grade is going to be given to an opposition that has allowed an institution that it dominates with its oneseat majority to become a footstool of the President and the ruling party? Parliament comprises both the President and the National Assembly and therefore to suggest that the President is doing what he pleases with the Parliament, ignores the
fact that without the President there can be no Parliament. While therefore it is being suggested that the President and his government are using the National Assembly as their stool, the opposition parties in turn were attempting to stomp on the government, of which the President is also the Head, by railroading through a motion of noconfidence. This motion of noconfidence was not intended to debate the merits of government policy or its performance on the job. In fact, for the first time ever in the history of civilized parliamentary conduct what was being presented was a motion of no-confidence without any reasons being adduced as to why the government should resign.
Guyana would have made history had such a motion been carried. Nothing could be more contemptuous of the people than to have a government which won the elections be removed by a National Assembly without even the decency of that Assembly providing reasons in their motion of noconfidence. The opposition parties by pledging their support for the noconfidence motion was turning the National Assembly into a dogfight in the Wild West. It is totally unheard of for any democratically elected government to be removed via a no- confidence motion if that motion does not allow for the government to a fair hearing. But how can there be a fair hearing when the government has not been
Bartica IMC/NDC recognizes efforts of Police ranks over Christmas holidays - appeals for community support to retain integrity of community Although he had tendered his resignation during the latter part of last year, Public Relations and Press Officer attached to the Bartica Interim Management Committee/ Neighbourhood Democratic Council (IMC/NDC), Sherwyn Downer, has resumed duties. This publication understands that Downer at a Council meeting had submitted his resignation to Chairman of the IMC, Ovid Benjamin, but it was however not accepted. Although there were some speculations about Downer’s
move to resign, persons close to the operations of the IMC/ NDC were however tightlipped about the development. Downer’s resignation intent was nevertheless deemed a surprise and some persons were claiming that his departure could be a severe blow to the IMC which is currently on a mission to work closely with both residents and organizations within the Region Seven District. Downer, in a brief comment, regarding his resumption of duty said that
the move by the Chairman and the Council to not accept his resignation is in fact “well appreciated. I am most humbled by the confidence placed in me by the Bartica IMC and I plan on redoubling my efforts in ensuring that Bartica and its residents continue to receive the highest level of representation possible,” added Downer. The IMC in a statement issued by Downer sought to commend the ranks of the Bartica Police Station for what Continued on page 24

charged with any specific offence. There was no whereas clause in the motion and so what was being out before the House was a debate on nothing because there the motion of itself lacked any flesh. It was a skeletal creature intended to constitutionally topple the government. Well, constitutions have always entrenched safeguard provisions against the tyranny of parliament. Burnham invoked one such safeguard when in the 1980 Constitution was included clause that allowed him to dissolve the National Assembly before they could remove him. That provision was removed via amendments tabled and passed during the Constitutional Reform Process. This process commenced after the 1997 elections. Under the reforms the power of the President to avoid impeachment by dissolving the National Assembly was removed. What was not removed-
and with good cause- was the power of the President to summon, prorogue or dissolve. This power was retained because it formed part of a legacy of reserve powers, historically vested in the Crown, whose objective is to safeguard against tyranny of the legislature. There are also provisions within the Constitution to safeguard against the abuse of the use of reserve powers of the President. Prorogation for example cannot be employed indefinitely. It is time- bound. The President cannot prorogue parliament
indefinitely. Those who therefore casually string clichés together and label the use of the reserve powers under the Constitution as an exercise of using parliament as a foot stool either do not understand fully the Constitution of Guyana or casually opt to ignore it.

=== The Freddie Kissoon column ===
Nova Scotia Bank, a land grabber and some Sheiks in 2014 I went into two places last year to ask for a comment on a column I was doing on Caucasian faces in local advertisements. It was the second time that I made contact with the Ed Ahmadconnected store on Sheriff Street named “Rouge.” I also spoke to the officials at the clothes store, “Glamour”, inside “Gizmos and Gadgets” on Wellington Street.” While the people at “Rouge” were unapologetic, I was given an interesting explanation for the white faces in the “Glamour” placements in the newspapers. They said those advertisements come down from their franchise owners abroad. These people would send down the stuff to be used in Guyana. The structural fault in that arrangement is that the advertisements by the franchise owners are designed to be used in a country different from Guyana. What “Glamour” needs to do is to inform their franchise owners that they should be allowed to do their own art
work here in Georgetown. That is of course assuming that I was given the correct explanation. But when you look at the 2015 calendar for the Bank of Nova Scotia in Guyana then the people at Glamour may be right. The calendar features a drawing for each month tracing the origin of the use of notes as money. In each of the drawing, it shows how commodities were used as money. In 1685, the French used playing cards as money. In Siberia in the nineteenth century, tea was the medium to do financial transactions. In another drawing, I was surprised to learn that in the seventies, Italy did not have sufficient coins to circulate so it used telephone tokens and candy as change. If that calendar was drafted in Guyana, then there could have been a portrait showing how eggs were used as money to attend the cinema in British Guiana. And this was as late as the forties. Had the bank printed its calendar in Guyana, it could have informed its customers of an interesting piece of
history of the evolution of money in Guyana. There was another fascinating encounter last year. I am not going to name the two persons involved but if requested by the Editor-inChief and the Publisher, I will. A very rich, close companion of the champion of dirt is so powerful that he can take any public land he wants to. He has a business place right next to a plot of land in Northwestern Georgetown. The plot housed a government ministry in the days of the PNC Government. The plot has been sitting there unused for decades, just like the Continental Company-owned piece that is right next to GPL at the corner of New Market and Main Streets. Do you know that unused plot of land has been idle for forty-four years now? Anyway, the champion’s friend thought it was Government’s property, so in 2014, he cleared and fenced it and began a modest construction. Mind you, he did this without legally trying to own the land. He figured
that if it is PPP Government property then he could just hijack it. Then the champion’s friend got a rude awakening. The owner, one of Guyana’s most successful AfricanGuyanese entrepreneurs, and one of the nicest businessmen you could meet in Guyana, heard about the plan-grabbing action, went down, confronted the workers and asked; “What are you doing on my land?” They ran and told the champion’s friend that the land has an owner. That was the end of the land-grabbing story. This is how the friends of the champion behave. Remember one of them imprisoned four NIS
inspectors on his work site when they went to investigate? Finally, in 2014, a private plane landed at the Cheddi Jagan airport. Two Sheiks dressed in Sheik’s clothing had a discussion in the VIP lounge with a certain Portuguese Guyanese. This gentleman is very close to the champion and is constantly featured in the Kaieteur News satirical column, “Dem Boys Seh.” After the conference was over, the Sheiks went into their plane. This columnist is a thousand percent accurate in what has just been described. The event took place and it is for the media to use its contacts and verify what I have written. My source is
Frederick Kissoon absolutely reliable. It is simply amazing how in a small country so many conspiracies and newsworthy events could go undetected. It is beyond belief that an overseas based Guyanese had a hangar at the airport and he flew in and out without security and customs checks and that never came out in the media. The Sheiks were here. Believe it or leave it!
Lakraj was fired for inefficiency - Rohee Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee yesterday said that former police officer Krishna Lakraj was not fired from the Ministry of Home Affairs for corrupt practices. The Ministry of Home Affairs gave Lakraj the boot about two weeks ago. The retired Assistant Police Commissioner was the Head of the Ministry’s Immigration Department. He said that Lakraj’s removal “was more a question of the efficient management of the (Immigration) Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs.” Rohee said that the real problem was applicants being made to wait too long to have their issues addressed. He added that there is no
staff shortage at the Ministry of Home Affairs hence, matters should not have been delayed as was happening under the management of Lakraj. Rohee said that Lakraj’s slothfulness created a lot of issues. Many persons kept complaining via the telephone and by email. Rohee told the media that he is concerned with a Ministry that has to be efficiently run. He said that no matter of corruption came to his attention and challenged media workers to share any information they have on corruption with him. “If you have something you should share it with me.” Rohee said that he did not get personally involved in the matter to avoid it being dubbed
“political.” He said, “If the Head of the Immigration Unit was of another ethnic group and the Minister of Home Affairs got involved, it probably would have been spun in another direction.” Lakraj retired from the police force over three years ago, but was re-appointed to head the Ministry’s Immigration Unit. The retiree served in that capacity for about two years, until he was handed his dismissal letter just as the year was about to end. Lakraj has been reportedly ordered to remove from the police accommodations at the Leonora Police Station where he resided, even after completing his service to the local security force years ago.

Client robs commercial sex worker after discovering wrong choice
The commercial sex worker who was robbed after being picked up at the Cathedral A commercial sex worker who was picked up by a client Sunday night outside St. George’s Cathedral was robbed of cash and his house keys after the client discovered that the sex worker was not exactly what he wanted. According to reports, a man who was intoxicated at the WindJammer International, Queen Street, Kitty decided to take a taxi and visit the St George’s Cathedral where he picked up
a commercial sex worker. Upon returning to WindJammer he booked a room and discovered that his choice was not exactly what he expected. It was further reported that the man who had given the sex worker $20,000 decided to take back his money and then searched the sex worker’s handbag from which he retrieved a small “chopper” and $63,000. He then used the weapon to threaten the sex worker who
called for backup. This caused a clash at WindJammer. The sex worker, who was later identified as Michael Wilson, of Alberttown, declared that all he had wanted back was his house keys since “I got to change my clothes to work tonight.” Police intervened after two of the sex workers’ friends who also ply the same trade turned up at WindJammer’s and created a ruckus. The man who solicited the sex worker’s service subsequently fled the scene jumping a fence after realizing that he was outnumbered. “I got a $100,000 in my bag and if anybody did snatch it then this place would have bruck up… no male police can’t arrest me yea, we got to get female police to take we in,” another sex worker said. According to an employee of the establishment, the man who was drunk didn’t even realize the choice he had made at St. George’s Cathedral. “Is when he come back and go up in the room he realize is not a woman.”
Essequibo miner hangs self
Leroy Cornelius A 21-year-old miner is the latest Essequibian to take his life. The Lima Sea Dam, Essequibo resident, Leroy Cornelius was discovered by his sister, Tracie Cornelius, hanging from a beam in their fowl pen Sunday afternoon. Cornelius, who worked in the interior as a miner, came home on December 18, last, his birthday, and was imbibing with his friends at a spot at Lima, moments before he took his life, his sister Nadia Cornelius said. According to a tearful Cornelius, her family had attended church. When her brother left his Lima Sea Dam home she questioned him if he was coming back home. Cornelius said her brother didn’t look back as he shook his head. She said later that day she visited the spot where her
brother was drinking with his friends. She said her brother never shared any of his grievances with his family; but indicated that her brother had problems with his friends. Cornelius said that later Sunday her brother came home and reported to his niece that he was drunk and retrieved his towel and headed into the bathroom. She said a moment later, it appeared as something struck her brother and he fell. Cornelius said her brother later ventured to the back of the yard where he ended his life. She said while in church her sister was sensing something amiss and after inquiring about her brother when she returned home, she ventured at the back of the yard where she discovered
him hanging from a beam in their fowl pen. Cornelius was the youngest of seven. A post mortem examination is scheduled to be performed before his burial. Recently, an 84-year-old Golden Fleece pensioner was discovered hanging from a beam in her bedroom. She was a re-migrant living with her sister. Meanwhile, another 33year-old Golden Fleece resident was discovered dead behind his yard after he had consumed a poisonous substance. And just before the New Year, a father of two had ended his life by consuming poison. The Devonshire-Castle man previously attempted to kill his two young children. He was described as a miserable and frustrated individual.

No arrests in East Canje failed hijacking Police in Berbice have so far been unsuccessful in arresting any suspects for the failed hijacking and stabbing of East Canje taxi drive, Balram Khanakumar, 23, of 75 New Street, Cumberland. Up to yesterday, the car that was involved in the incident, grey Toyota Allion, PRR 9966, still remained in police custody at the Central Police Station compound. Khanakumar was discharged on Sunday afternoon from the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was nursing eight stab wounds. He is currently on medication and is fearful. He spent much of the day yesterday at the Central Police Station assisting the police with their investigations and giving statements. Last Friday, shortly after 19:00 hrs, two men entered Khanakumar’s vehicle in the vicinity of Pitt Street, saying that they were heading into East Canje and they informed Khanakumar that two other persons were to be picked up at Trinity Street as well as a female in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) at Garrison Road.
Balram Khanakumar He picked up two other males at Trinity Street, but there was no female, he said, at NATI. It was a few minutes later under the Canje River Bridge where he was brutally stabbed and a fight ensued for the car. The key ring of the car apparently was torn apart from the keys during the struggle. The key remained in the ignition and Khanakumar regained control of the vehicle and sped off to his aunt at New Street,
Cumberland in a bloody state. He was bleeding from the back, head and hands. Khanakumar said that he is ready and willing to identify his hijackers in an Identification Parade since he can vividly remember their faces. Relatives are anxious for the police to apprehend the perpetrators. They stated that the entire car seats in the front portion of the vehicle would have to be replaced because of the blood.

PPP to recommence IAC to observe 7th anniversary electioneering meetings of Lusignan massacre and outreaches The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will soon recommence its “countrywide outreach programme” with a series of bottom house and community meetings. This was told to the media yesterday by the Party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee. The recommencement of the election campaign was the focus of Rohee’s opening statement at the PPP weekly press conference at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown. He said that his Party is encouraged by the show of support it has been receiving during the several party outreaches conducted before the holiday season. According to Rohee, while the outreaches were in sessions, citizens showed overwhelming support for President Donald Ramotar’s decision to prorogue Parliament to avoid facing the Alliance for Change (AFC) sponsored No-Confidence motion against the Government. The General Secretary told the media that Party members and supporters took the opportunity during the community meetings and outreaches to pledge their continued support to the Party and their commitment to work untiringly to realize a complete victory for the party in the upcoming elections. “Residents also took the opportunity to raise community issues with party functionaries and expressed satisfaction with the role played by the Party in bringing these to the attention
of policy makers and relevant authorities” said Rohee. He said, also, that the PPP, during its interaction with those on the ground, “saw encouraging signs that the PPP/C would win a comfortable majority of the votes whenever elections are held, thereby, being in a much better position to continue with its development agenda without hindrance by opposition parties.” Rohee said that Party leaders were told that several former PPP supporters who voted for the AFC in the last elections regretted their decision. He asserted that this may be because AFC led a campaign of “lies and false hopes” to the people in 2011. When asked how residents reacted to the fact that President Ramotar did not fulfill some of the promises he made during the 2011 election campaign, like the one to hold Local Government Elections, Rohee said that people “understood.” He said that many indeed raised concerns that could have been solved by the holding of Local Government Elections but were appeased when Party Leaders explained to them why the President made the decision to hold the elections. The General Secretary also told the media that PPP is well underway with its preparations for the imminent elections. “Already we have started to mobilize volunteers and activate our elections machinery. We have never been afraid of elections.”
The five children who were among those killed. The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) will be holding an inter-faith service, an “Evening of Remembrance”, on Monday, January 26, next, in observance of the seventh anniversary of the Lusignan massacre. Seven years ago, 11 Guyanese, comprising five children and six adults, were slaughtered during the massacre on the morning of January 26, 2008 by merciless gunmen armed with shotguns and AK-47s. A press release from IAC stated that next Monday’s event, which will commence at 17:00 hrs (5:00 p.m.) at Tract “A” Lusignan (the place of the horrific crime), will be done in collaboration with the relatives of the slain victims, residents of Lusignan and the religious community. Tributes will be paid by the IAC, relatives and representatives of the three major religions. Over the years the IAC has worked with the relatives, residents of Lusignan and the religious community, in commemorating this event in an effort to ensure that the memories of those whose lives were snuffed out would not fade into oblivion. Many were affected by
the massacre after gunmen invaded the homes of five Lusignan families and murdered Clarence Thomas, 48; Vanessa Thomas, 12; Ron Thomas, 11; Mohandan Goordat, 32; Seegopaul Harilall, 10; Seegobin Harilall, four; Dhanwajie Ramsingh, 52; Seecharran Rooplall, 56;
Raywattie Ramsingh, 11; Shazam Mohammed, 22; and Shaleem Baksh, 52. Several of the children were found dead in their beds. Two members of the Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins gang, Mark Royden Williams called ‘Smallie’ and James Anthony Hyles aka ‘sally’,
who were charged for the murders, were set free by a jury. This was despite the testimony of a former gang member who turned state witness. The Director of Public Prosecutions has appealed the High Court decision.

UG law students optimistic about automatic entry into HWLS - UGLS Hopeful’ is the word being used by secretary of University of Guyana Law Society (UGLS), Arianna Beharry, to describe the reaction of students attached to the University of Guyana, (UG)’s Faculty of Law, following a recent meeting regarding their automatic entry into the Trinidad-based Hugh Wooding Law school (HWLS). On Tuesday last, Executive members of the University of Guyana Law Society (UGLS) and a few other Law Students met with the Attorney General, (AG) Anil Nandlall to discuss the future of legal education in Guyana. In a statement issued by UGLS, Nandlall informed the body that the issue of Guyanese law students’ admittance to Hugh Wooding Law School is being
addressed at the CARICOM level. During the course of the meeting, the law students were also informed that based on several discussions and the exchange of written pieces, it is expected that the original agreement between (UG) and the U n i v e r s i t y o f t h e We s t Indies (UWI), would still stand which will enable the automatic entrance of the top 25 law students into Hugh Wooding and entrance of 10 Non-Guyanese Nationals. The other law students outside the scope of ‘25’ will be expected to continue writing the entrance examinations. The AG disclosed that a decision was taken by the Heads of Government to write to the Council of Legal Education to address the issue. It was further noted
that a review of the Council for Legal Education is scheduled. This review would assess legal education in the region and whether or not there should be a continued reliance on the Council of Legal Education solely to provide continued legal training. It was also noted, that it is important in the nature of quality control mechanisms that UWI’s LLB is to be associated with that of UG, since there continues to be space problems at Hugh Wooding. The AG informed the group that the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago is willing to offer physical space in the south of Trinidad for the establishment of another law school but this decision is in the hands of the Council.
of the vehicle was released on bail after being taken into custody. “I received a call at around 20:30hrs Monday night and I came out to the hospital and I see them trying to save he life…I was feeling bad and I went home and at 22:00hrs I got a call saying my father died. They say he died as a result of a fractured skull and spine injury.” She explained that the driver was reportedly placed on $100,000 bail and it appears that the vehicle was returned to the owner as it is no longer in the police station’s compound. Underscoring that the Police seem to be keeping information from her, Azab said “all they telling me is that the matter will go through the court and the file got to be looked at by the DPP. My father didn’t deserve to die. Not like that.” Azab noted that the persons responsible for her father’s death never contacted her or any other
family member to offer their condolences or any form of compensation. “My father didn’t have much. He was a farmer and he used to live by himself….It’s me and my sister from New Jersey had to pool money for the funeral. They couldn’t even offer to help. It’s not like we want it or anything, but they just don’t seem like they care what they did,” the daughter emphasised. She said that an eyewitness had related to her that a woman was driving the car but police inquiry revealed the driver was a male. “I was told that the woman who was driving does not own a valid driver’s licence; therefore, the man took responsibility for the woman’s accident…The last time I see he (my father) was on Christmas Day. Like I still feel he is here, like sometimes I does go to pick up the phone to call him but then I remember he’s dead.” She further lamented.

Dead: Abdul Azab Hamied Following the death of her father by a speeding car weeks ago, Shareema Azab, of Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara is calling on the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to investigate why the driver of the vehicle was never charged, although the police claimed they had sent the file to the DPP’s office for recommendation. The mother of two is demanding justice for her father, Abdul Azab Hamied, 54, of Lot 4, Friendship, East Bank Demerara who was killed on January 5, 2015 while crossing the Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara. Reports are, a motor vehicle bearing the licence plate number PCC 9494 struck him. The man was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. The driver

Richards requested reasonable bail. Their application was objected to by Corporal Mangru. The Prosecutor said although reasons were advanced by the lawyers, none were special as prescribed in the anti-narcotics Act. Resultantly, the Chief
Magistrate grilled the Prosecution about the reason for Bristol's lengthy detention. Mangru claimed that the man had been in custody on Thursday and that yesterday was the first opportunity they had to bring him to court. Magistrate SewnarineBeharry ordered the Prosecution to investigate the allegations into the alleged beating. Their bail applications were denied and the case will be called again on January 26 for report.
The law students were also informed of an offer made by the Attorney General of the Bahamas to allocate space for Guyanese law students at a reduced cost if there is a significant amount of Guyanese students who will be attending. This option however, is a last resort and is entirely up to the students. Nandlall stated that the government had sponsored the Vice Chancellor and the Head of the Department (HOD) of Law to accompany the AG to a meeting in order to discuss the issues faced by Law Students. However, an update is yet to be given by
the HOD on its progress with the Council of Legal Education. UGLS added that the AG also met with Principal of the Hugh Wooding Law School, Miriam Samaru, on Friday and several issues were discussed, in particular those affecting the Guyanese students at the HWLS. “It was a very fruitful meeting, and many of the issues which were raised were successfully addressed.” According to UGLS another meeting is scheduled for February 5, 2015 in Grenada for further deliberations on the issue.
Attorney General, Anil Nandlall

Letters... Where your views make the news
Peeping Tom and Tennassee forgot the context in which... From page 4 was actively building his party’s military capability while having strong relations with the MIR in Venezuela Burnham correctly analyzed the situation in the hemisphere and recognized that Guyana’s interest did not lie in supporting Castroite export of revolution. Here there is a confluence of the interests of Guyana and Venezuela, and Burnham showed he had the intellectual capacity to understand and unravel the intricacies of the situation and promote Guyana’s interest. The foregoing is very important if it is noted that the foremost concern of Guyana at that juncture was to deal with the Guyana/Venezuela territorial controversy. Burnham would have been foolhardy to support Cuba when its interest was in conflict with Guyana’s interest. The fact is, the situation in Latin America and the domestic political situation were not conducive to Guyana establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba. Burnham therefore, rather than “being actively engaged in the campaign to isolate Cuba” was manifestly protecting Guyana’s interest. In reference to Guyana establishing diplomatic relations with Cuba under Mr. Burnham, the then Prime Minister, Peeping Tom stated that “It is of greater significance that it took him more than six years to do so than it is of the fact that he helped break the diplomatic isolation of Cuba in the Caribbean”. The foregoing statement misses the context in which Guyana was operating when Burnham came to power. Guyana’s foremost priority at the international level was to address the issue of the Guyana/Venezuela territorial controversy and to generally develop the diplomatic infrastructure that was required to protect Guyana’s territorial integrity vis-à-vis, the Venezuela territorial controversy, and to a lesser extent Suriname maritime and territorial issues. It is apposite to note that by 1970, as a result of the diplomatic work done; the Protocol of Port of Spain was signed, placing the Guyana/ Venezuela territorial controversy in cold storage and giving Guyana the breeding space to focus on other diplomatic issues. It could not have been in Guyana’s interest for the issue of diplomatic relations with Cuba to be the focus of Guyana’s diplomatic efforts in the early stages of Guyana’s foreign policy. Lacking the military capability to deter Venezuela, Guyana’s task was to develop relations with the Caribbean, Brazil and the wider Latin America, and the Developed Western world against Venezuela, A task which
Burnham’s diplomacy achieved with distinction. Had Burnham pursued diplomatic relations with Cuba before putting the required diplomatic infrastructure in place to promote and protect Guyana’s interests would have been, to use Burnham’s words, “to court heroic death”. Burnham chose “to survive sensibly”. It is therefore clear that Peeping Tom’s contention that it is significant that Burnham took six years to do so is a clear indication that he or she believes that Burnham should have become involved in political adventurism rather than pursuing Guyana’s national interest. The extant conditions between 1964 and 1970 were not propitious to breaking Cuba’s diplomatic isolation. Peeping Tom and Tennassee’s suggestion that what Burnham did in relation to Cuba was mere opportunism is rubbish and cannot make it through the crucible of intellectual rigour. The truth is the context had changed. Would Tennassee and Peeping Tom concede that if Burnham is opportunist, then Dr. Jagan is, since he condemned and opposed the US throughout his early politics but when he saw the opportunity that the US would accept him as President in the post-Cold War era, he lobbied the US for support? Or is he, Dr. Jagan, a good tactician, while Burnham is an opportunist? Tennassee and Peeping Tom in their quest to denigrate Burnham will stop at nothing. By the end of the 1960’s the situation in Guyana and the region had changed significantly. At the national level, Burnham had managed to reduce the violence capabilities of the PPP, and they were forced to eschew the path of armed insurrection against his government. But the PPP continued its strategy of sabotaging the economy in various forms, especially the use of arson - the burning of cane and government property. In addition, the government was no longer a coalition government with the UF, which Dr. Jagan had described as a right-wing capitalist party. One therefore could not have expected Burnham to pursue diplomatic
relations with Cuba to end Cuba’s isolation in the pre1968 period. At the regional level the situation had also changed. The MIR’s insurrectional activities were defeated in Venezuela. That brought an end to the PPP/MIR insurrectional activities. Cuba changed its policy of export of revolution and began to focus on interstate relations. To this end, it is useful to note that the US State Department Special Report No. 90 of December14, 1981 entitled “Cuba’s Renewed Support of Violence in Latin America” stated that in 1968 after Cuba “failed to establish a continental revolution, Cuban foreign policy moved in closer conformity with that of the Soviet Union”...”Within the Hemisphere, Cuba generally conformed to the Soviet approach of fostering state-to-state relations with several Latin American countries.” At the international level, détente was the major policy focus; there was rapprochement between the US and the USSR; the US was talking to communist China and nonalignment was a relatively strong force in international relations. What the foregoing suggests is that the national, regional and international situation had changed considerably by the early 1970’s and was therefore conducive to the Burnham initiative to end the diplomatic isolation of Cuba. What is therefore significant is not the length of time Burnham took, but his ability to correctly analyse the situation and pursue what turned out to be a decision that would redound to Guyana and the region’s benefit. As it relates to Peeping Tom’s contention that “Burnham was too timid, too afraid of the Americans to have gone it alone”, it is clearly the position of a foreign policy novice who does not, or conveniently decides that he does not, understand the role of solidarity and support in foreign policy, and that it is generally better to have regional support for an initiative rather than going it alone. In any case, Burnham made it clear to Caricom states that his preference was to have a collective decision in relation
to Cuba, but if necessary, he was prepared to do so alone. I do believe that Dr Jagan was more known in the international communist movement than Burnham. However, the contention that Dr. Jagan was more respected in the socialist world is questionable. The evidence suggests that Castro respected Burnham, while Jagan was sure to do whatever was dictated to him by the communist world. That (dis)honour I would never want Burnham to get. As it relates to the contention that Burnham wanted to neutralise Dr. Jagan, I agree. It was necessary in the politics of the day for Burnham to neutralise Dr. Jagan. It was politics. Do not write as if it was Sunday school and Dr. Jagan was offering an olive branch to Burnham. He was against Burnham and showed he was willing to use violence to achieve his objectives. Aubrey C. Norton

Mosquito Hall benefitted from critical sea defence intervention Out of an allocation of $1.802B for Sea and River Defence, the Ministry of Public Works’ Sea and River Defence Division expended $1.502B; ($1.3B on capital programmes and $202.83M on maintenance). This is according to information provided by Coordinator, Work Services Group (WSG,) Geoffrey Vaughn, at the recent Ministry of Public Works’ press briefing on the sector’s 2014 performance. Vaughn explained that the unspent money, $300M was provided under donor funded projects. Last year, this sum was budgeted for project activities under the Caribbean Development Bank/ Government of Guyana (CDB/ GOG) Sea and River Defence Resilience project. It covered, estimates for payments on consultancy services and works. Though major advancements were made with the procurement process, no contracts were initiated in 2014 due to delays in the finalisation of administrative arrangements and official approvals from the CDB and the GOG. However, contracts for planned activities are expected to be finalised during the first quarter of 2015, Vaughn said. Of the $1.3B expended in the area of sea defence construction in 2014, the Sea and River Defence Division was able to exceed all its 2014 projects targeted. The division achieved 3.195kilometres (km) of new sea defence construction (3.06km was programmed,)
rehabilitated 10.29 km (2.805km was programmed,) and provided for the maintenance of another 45.4km (20.7km was programmed). The year saw reconstruction of critical sea defence in areas such as Onderneeming, Essequibo, Region Two, Cane Garden, Leguan, Rotterdam and Greenwich, East Bank Essequibo, Region Three; Mosquito Hall, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara and Glasgow/Heatburn, East Bank Berbice. The intervention at Onderneeming, Essequibo was an intervention of $107.88M. It catered for the provision of 584 metres (m) of slope protection worked carried out from January 15, 2014 to August 15, 2014 by contractor, Deodat Singh. For the contract sum of $43.8M, contractor Roopchand Maraj, completed 420m of rip rap river defence at Cane Garden. During the period January to June 2014, contractor, Eman Reasat, completed 90m of rip rap sea defence at Greenwich Park to the tune of $42.3M. The work at Rotterdam was provided for under a contract sum of $61.1M. B.K International Inc., completed 250m of emergency work in this area. Mosquito Hall, Mahaica saw the biggest intervention for the year. A contract sum of $275.5M was expended towards the construction of river defence. This project, which is currently in Phase One, commenced on June 2014, and is scheduled to be
completed in February of this year. Thus far, 540m of work has been completed by contractor, M&B construction. The contracted sum of $116.66M was also awarded to M&B Construction to construct rip rap sea defence at Glasgow/Heatburn. Work to this effect commenced on September 15, and thus far, 150m has been completed. Meanwhile, in Georgetown, the rehabilitation of Fort Groyne at Kingston continued in 2014, as part of the Sea and River Defence Division’s featured sea defence rehabilitation project.
Contractor M&B Construction commenced work on August 22, 2014, and to date 117m of work was
achieved. The contract sum on this job is $11.65M. The Sea and River Defence Force Action Unit
also carried out installation of geotextile tubes along the Georgetown Sea Defence. (GINA)
Burglar nabbed in house a week after release from jail Released from jail just a week ago on a burglary conviction, a 43-year-old Grove, East Bank Demerara Squatting Area man, was nabbed yesterday breaking into another house, in the same area, where he was previously caught. It was in October 2014,
that police had arrested James Hutton, called ‘Dufu,’ following a burglary in a house in Section A, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. Hutton pleaded guilty to break and enter and larceny and was jailed for six months. But he was released last week after serving just four months of his sentence. Hutton appears to have a liking for houses in Diamond Housing Scheme, and police alleged that around 15.30 hrs yesterday, he broke into a twostoried house in the community.
No one was at home at the time, but neighbours reportedly spotted the thief entering via a kitchen window. Kaieteur News understands that Hutton was packing his booty when residents surrounded the house. However, ranks from the Golden Grove Police Station arrived and saved the wouldbe burglar from the wrath of the irate neighbours. They reportedly found Hutton hiding in the bathroom. He was taken into custody and is to be charged shortly.
Bartica IMC/NDC recognizes... From page 9 he described as “hard work and dedication towards ensuring the safety of the residents of Bartica.” Speaking of evident heightened security, particularly during the Christmas season, Downer said that even the providers of entertainment were able to collaborate well with the police force in order to ensure that such events were incident free. “While other parts of the country experienced a number of criminal activities, Barticians actually enjoyed an environment that could be considered incident free,” said Downer. He in attributing this state of affairs to the very visible presence of Police ranks pointed out that the tactical
operations had certainly not escaped the eyes of the IMC/ NDC. “We wish to encourage the same practice and attitude throughout the year – the positive and peaceful behaviour of residents and we are calling on them to continue in the same spirit in order to keep Bartica as a community where persons would be desirous of visiting,” said Downer. “Our hospitality has no limit, kudos to the police and entertainment providers.” said Downer. He noted that “the IMC/NDC looks forward to continue working with all stakeholders and community minded individuals and groups to ensure a better and safer community.”

T&T government says oil price drop has resulted in $TT7.5 billion loss PORT-OF-SPAIN, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government has reiterated its position that the drop in oil prices on the global market is not a signal for a sudden change in its economic development policies. “We have the capacity, we have the will and we have passion to secure our future and we will emerge stronger, together,” Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar told business leaders at a meeting here on Thursday night. Oil prices have dropped significantly from a high of US$104 a barrel in June to less than US$50 a barrel this week. The government has said that the island has lost approximately $TT7.5 billion as a result of the oil price situation and last Thursday Prime Minister in an address to the nation outlined measures which she said her administration would take to lessen the impact on the local
economy. But it has already promised there would be no job cuts or cuts in social programmes. A government statement issued after the talks said the prime minister held an “important conversation with the business community” and that “representatives endorsed the approach taken in dealing with the current environment, and expressed their commitment to working with the Government on projects and initiatives to further expand the economy.” The statement quoted Prime Minister Persad Bissessar as assuring “business people that she would ensure that the present challenges are managed in a way that places people and country first, and also a strong focus on preserving the economic and social stability. “She noted that the Government’s first approach
includes review of our PSIP (Public Sector Investment Programme) and recurrent expenditure with the aim of identifying savings of approximately TT$4.5 billion (One TT dollar=US$0.16 cents).” She said that further savings would be “derived from a lower oil price generating a lower demand on Government for the petroleum subsidy, adjusted possibly to TT$1.7 billion. “With the best made plans, accelerating development, increased growth and stability, it is the people we depend on to make it happen. “Sectors cannot expand, the economy cannot grow, the future cannot be secured unless the policies we implement and the vision we pursue place the people as the drivers of progress,” the statement quoted Prime Minister persad Bissessar as saying.
Tourist attacked by shark in Bahamas faces further surgery for life-threatening injuries FLORIDA– When Texas resident Lacy Webb Martin flew to the Bahamas for a New Year snorkelling vacation with her husband and parents, little did she know that she’d be returning home by air ambulance with lifethreatening injuries. Martin, 34, was flown to South Florida after a shark, estimated to be about 10-feetlong and believed to be a tiger shark, attacked her in the water off Elbow Cay. According to the victim’s husband Britt Martin, who saw the full extent of her injuries when she was back on board the boat, the shark bit off part of the right side of his wife’s body. “I was looking, and just a huge piece of her was missing, and so I grabbed a towel, I just started wrapping it around her, trying to stop the bleeding,” Martin said at a news conference. The badly injured woman was rushed to the airport, flown to Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where doctors have since performed at least two surgeries, one of which included the removal of a shark tooth from her body.
Texas resident Lacy Webb Martin flew to the Bahamas for a New Year snorkelling vacation Martin still faces three to five additional operations over the next several weeks before she can return home to Dallas. While doctors said her prognosis was good, they indicated that she will have some lasting physical damage. “You have to see some of the pictures of her wounds to really appreciate the size of this shark,” said Dr Andrew Rosenthal of Memorial Regional Hospital. “I mean, the mouth bite. I have a feeling that the shark could have swallowed her whole.” “We haven’t seen an injury to this degree in many years,” Rosenthal added.
Meanwhile, Britt Martin marvelled at his wife’s resilience throughout the ordeal, despite what her doctor described as a “large pizza-size defect” to her torso. “She’s tough. It’s her personality,” Martin said. “We’re both Christians, and she told me the whole time that God was going to get her through this.” Martin also disclosed that his wife intends to keep the shark tooth as a memento from her brush with death. “She’s actually excited about it. She said she’s going to make a necklace with the shark tooth,” he said.

Iran sees no OPEC shift toward a cut, says oil industry could withstand $25 crude (Reuters) - Iran sees no sign of a shift within OPEC toward action to support oil prices, its oil minister said, adding its oil industry could ride out a further price slump to $25 a barrel. The comments are a further sign that despite lobbying by Iran and Venezuela, there is little chance of collective action by the 12-member OPEC to prop up prices - entrenching the reluctance of individual members to curb their own supplies. In remarks posted on the Iranian oil ministry’s website SHANA, Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh called for increased cooperation between members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. “Iran has no plan (to hold an emergency OPEC meeting) and is currently in consultations with other OPEC member states in a bid
to prevent the sharp fall in the oil price, but these consultations have yet to bear fruit,” he said. Oil has plunged by more than half since June 2014 to below $50 a barrel on Monday, pressured by a global glut and OPEC’s refusal at its last meeting in November to cut its output. OPEC decided against a production cut despite misgivings from non-Gulf members such as Iran and Venezuela, after top producer Saudi Arabia argued the group needed to defend market share against U.S. shale oil and other competing sources. Since the meeting, lobbying by Iran for a cut and a diplomatic tour by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has failed to soften the stance of the Gulf members, who can live with relatively low oil prices. Reinforcing the impasse,
the Gulf members are frustrated with the position of other countries, who call for supply cuts but do not offer any themselves. Zanganeh said Iran had no plans to cut its own oil production and that it had no further meetings with Saudi Arabia - Iran’s main political rival in the Gulf - since the OPEC meeting. Last week, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said countries behind the price fall would regret their decision and warned that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait would suffer alongside Iran from the price drop. Zanganeh said Iran’s budget should be based on oil at $72 per barrel, but Iran could withstand lower oil prices. “Even if the oil price goes down to $25 a barrel, the oil industry will not be threatened,” the Fars news agency quoted him as saying.
Syria begins destruction of chemical weapons facilities
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Syria has started the longdelayed destruction of a dozen underground bunkers
and hangars that were used for the production and storage of chemical weapons, diplomatic sources told
Reuters on Monday. Damascus last year handed over 1,300 metric tonnes of toxic agents after joining the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), but it is months behind schedule in destroying the facilities used to make and store its deadly stockpile. Work at a first tunnel began on Dec. 24, but was delayed by winter storms. The site will be sealed off with cement walls by the end of January, said one source in The Hague, where the global chemical weapons watchdog is based. “The work finally began, which is good news,” said another source. “There were some technical issues and the bad weather has slowed up the process.”

Emrit, Bravo hand T&T convincing win CCC teach Jaguars... PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Captain Rayad Emrit’s incisive maiden regional one-day five-wicket haul proved the difference, as Trinidad and Tobago Red Force beat Jamaica Franchise by 17 runs to win their second straight game in the NAGICO Super50 here Sunday. The 33-year-old seamer finished with five for 56 to help reduce Jamaica to 215 all out off 49.1 overs, crippling their pursuit of 233 for victory at Queen’s Park Oval. Opener Nkrumah Bonner stroked 51 at the top of the order, Dave Bernard Jr got 40 and Andre McCarthy, 37, while John Campbell hit 26. Seamer Kevon Cooper chipped in with three for 34 to support Emrit. Earlier, T&T were guided to 232 all out off 49.3 overs by Darren Bravo’s 55, with support coming from his West Indies teammate Kieron Pollard with 41. Dwayne Bravo, the discarded Windies one-day skipper, scored 34 and
wicketkeeper Steven Katwaroo stroked 31. Fast bowler Derval Green claimed three for 65 while leftarm spinner Nikita Miller (218), speedster Marquino Mindley (2-36) and seamer Dave Bernard (2-48), all finished with two wickets apiece. The victory followed on from Friday’s five-wicket victory over West Indies Under19s. Sent in, Red Force lost the attacking Evin Lewis cheaply for five in the fourth over with the score on eight and required Darren Bravo’s halfcentury to provide stability. He hit eight fours and a six off 82 deliveries, adding 34 for the second wicket with opener Nicholas Sookdeosingh (19) and 31 for the third wicket with Jason Mohammed (6). Miller struck, prising out Sookdeosingh and Mohammed while Darren Bravo fell to leg-spinner Damion Jacobs to leave Red Force on 105 for four in the 26th over, but the experienced Dwayne Bravo and Pollard
came together in a positive 58run, fifth wicket partnership to steady the innings. Bravo faced 59 balls and counted five fours while Pollard struck three fours and two sixes in an up tempo knock that required just 44 balls. However, once Dwayne Bravo was lbw to Bernard in the 39th over, the last six wickets crashed for 69 runs. Jamaica then seemed favourites for the win when Bonner and Campbell put on 45 for the first wicket but Emrit struck three telling blows – two in the first over of his spell – to reduce the visitors to 118 for five in the 31st over. He first had Campbell caught at the wicket prodding forward to the second ball and two deliveries later, had captain Tamar Lambert taken at slip by Dwayne Bravo without scoring. Bonner and Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood (14) added 43 for the third wicket to defy the Trinidadians until Emrit struck again in his sixth over, claiming Blackwood bowled off the inside edge in

the 21st over. Three wickets tumbled for 30 runs until McCarthy and Bernard posted 48 for the sixth wicket to prop up the innings and once again leave the game an open affair. Bernard’s knock included two fours and two sixes and required 50 deliveries while McCarthy hit three fours off 64 balls. However, McCarthy top edged a cut behind off Cooper to set off a slide where the last five wickets fell for 51 runs. Bernard was still there at the start of the final over with Jamaica needing 18 to win but was bowled off the first ball by Dwayne Bravo, as he looked to improvise. Summary Scores: T&T Red Force Innings: 232 All Out (49.3 Overs). Darren Bravo 55, Kieron Pollard 41, Dwayne Bravo 34, Steven Katwaroo+ 31; Derval Green 10-0-65-3, Nikita Miller 10-4-18-2, Marquino Mindley 10-0-36-2, Dave Bernard Jr 9.3-0-48-2. Result: T&T Red Force won by 17 runs.
(From page 27) morning rain had delayed the start of play by 15 minutes. Trevon Griffith (2) continued his run of low scores when he was stupendously caught behind by a diving Chadwick Walton as the lefthander edged a ball that left him from pacer Christopher Powell with the score on 181. Reifer, who played a match winning unbeaten 84 against Barbados and got off the mark with a pugnacious four, soon missed a big drive to the first ball bowled by leg-spinner Keron Cottoy and was bowled for seven. Chandrika (26) played a few glorious drives and was just beginning to look good before he was bowled first ball by Rovman Powell who induced Barnwell to edge a catch to the Keeper next ball to send him packing for a first ball duck as two wickets tumbled with the score on 45. The experienced 40-yearold Chanderpaul and Crandon, who got a ton on his one-day debut against the Windwards in 2007 in Grenada, joined forces to revive the position with a solid partnership to bat their team out of trouble when steady if at times slow scoring. Crandon took a few more chances than Chanderpaul who was content with working the ball in the gaps. A couple of confident sweeps
by Crandon off the spinners raced to the backward square leg boundary as the pair’s confidence increased the longer they spent at the crease. The 50 was posted in the 25th over and their 50 partnership came up in the 39th over as skies over Port-of-Spain became dark and ominous. Chanderpaul faced 58 dots balls and scored 23 singles in a laborious 84-ball 33 and put immense pressure on Crandon before he uncharacteristically charged Rovman Powell off the penultimate ball of the powerplay and impetuously skied the ball ‘miles’ into the air for the bowler to take the catch to leave Guyana on 99-5. Just when he was beginning to flow Crandon skied Kyle Mayers to extra cover for 39 from 65 balls to leave the Jaguars on 127-7 after former CCC Captain Steven Jacobs (2) had edged Cottoy to the Keeper at 113-6. Anthony Bramble (20) and Permaul, who clobbered three sixes and a four in a rearguard unbeaten 30 from just 16 balls, added 53 for the eighth wicket before Bramble was bowled by Mayers. Permaul launched into opening bowler Chris Powell and hit him for a couple of sixes after smashing him through extra cover for four while Bishoo (0) was run out at the non-striker’s end with three balls left in the innings off of a wide which went through to the Keeper. After Wintz got rid of Shacaya Thomas (1) and Kyle Hope (16), Kavem Hodge was run out for one at 44-4 and Cassius Burton (8) was LBW to Permaul the CCC maroon were being marooned on 60-5 and at that point the task seemed like it would be too much for the inexperienced students, but they fought back splendidly and taught the Jaguars a fine lesson in not taking the opposition for granted when you have them on the ropes.

Pink ball undergoes broadcast trial
SAY CHEESE: Pink balls underwent a broadcast trial © Getty Images ESPNcricinfo - The seemingly inexorable push towards playing a day-night Test this year continued at the MCG on Sunday, when Channel Nine and Cricket Australia conducted a broadcast trial with pink balls. Australia appear almost certain to host the inaugural day-night Test against New Zealand in November, with Adelaide Oval and Bellerive Oval in Hobart the most likely venues. A day-night round of Sheffield Shield matches was played in November with pink Kookaburra balls, following on from a similar round near the end of last summer. Cricket Australia is confident the pink ball will be able to stand up to the rigours of Test cricket, but Sunday’s trial in Melbourne was intended to assess how the ball shows up on television. Channel Nine used their full setup of cameras in place for the Australia-India oneday international and club cricketers took part in the pink-ball trial before play, during the innings break and after the end of the match. New balls, 40-over balls and 80-over balls were used in the different light conditions in an attempt to replicate the progression of a daynight Test. “We have conducted several broadcast tri-
als in recent years which identified the pink ball as the most suitable for use in a day-night Test,” James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia CEO said. “However as we move closer to scheduling a match, we felt this was a good opportunity to take advantage of Nine’s full-camera set up and help it adequately prepare for a potential day-night Test later this year.” The ICC approved daynight Test cricket in 2012, leaving the finer points up to the participating boards. Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket last year discussed the prospect of playing a daynight Test during New Zealand’s tour of Australia in the 2015-16 season, and Cricket Australia has also reportedly raised the possibility with West Indies, who are also touring next summer. The traditional Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests in Melbourne and Sydney will remain unaffected and Perth is also considered an unsuitable venue due to its threehour time difference from the east coast during summer. There were some issues with visibility of the pink ball at the Gabba during last season’s Sheffield Shield trial, leaving Adelaide and Hobart as the most suitable venues. Cricket Australia is keen to bring Test cricket into the
prime-time television schedule on the east coast, which already occurs during WACA Tests and brings a spike in ratings. However, Sutherland has often stressed that he did not consider day-night Test cricket as simply a moneymaking venture, but rather a way to revitalise the Test game around the world. “The option to time-shift Test cricket into the evening will only strengthen the position and possibilities for Test cricket in many parts of the world,” he said. “There are many Test matches played during non-holiday periods when adults are at work and kids are at school. That’s not an ideal way to promote the highest form of the game. In fact there isn’t a major team sport in the world that schedules the majority of its premium content during the working week. “We’re not talking about playing the Boxing Day or New Year’s Test at night. The summer holiday period in Australia really lends itself to Test cricket, but at other times of the year it can be difficult for fans to attend or watch Test matches, be it here or in other parts of the world. That’s really at the heart of the issue. The challenge is to try to make Test cricket more accessible for fans around the world.”
Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis ruled out... (From page 31) Lindener, Sharon Ward, will also grace the ring after a prolonged absence when she tackles Lorissa Rivas, an American of Trinidadian parentage, in a
6 r o u n d s s u p e r / middleweight bout. Fans will also be entertained when former local and current CABOFE bantamweight champion, Dexter Marques, matches gloves
with Quincy Gomes in a 6 rounds catchweight affair while in the card’s opener, local debutant, Travis Fraser will square off with Barbadian, Charwyn Eswick over 4 rounds.

Letter to the Sports Editor
What Next for West Indies Cricket
DEAR SPORTS EDITOR, I have tremendous respect for the chairman of selectors for his achievements on and off the cricket field, but his recent attempt to explain questionable selections and omissions of the West Indies World Cup squad has left me and most of the cricketing world aghast. The question asked is whether it was prudent to rebuild at a major tournament like the World Cup or after in preparation for World Cup 2019? I am sure the overwhelming majority of reasonable thinking cricket fans in the world find the rebuilding explanation unpalatable to swallow. I assume that the selectors were aware of the changes in the rules for this World Cup before they selected this squad. They are as follows: · First power play for ten (10) overs with only 2 players allowed outside the 30yds circle. · Batting power play for five (5) overs before the 40th over with 3 players allowed outside the 30 yds. circle. Five fielders within the 30 yards at all times during the course of the innings.
· Two new balls (one at each end) Rahul Dravid and Greame Smith opined that it will force teams to play specialist bowlers and not play part-timers for obvious reasons. It would therefore mean that teams will likely comprise of five (5) specialist batsmen, a batting all-rounder who is a recognised bowler, wicketkeeper and four specialist bowlers. With this in mind I sought to select the best team from the bunch selected and arrived at Gayle, Smith, Simmons, Bravo, Samuels, Ramdin, Russell, Holder, Taylor, Roach, Narine. The rest (Sammy, Cottrell, Benn, Carter) will have to be excluded. Be that as it may, anyone looking at the composition of the present West Indies 15 member squad and compare it with the inclusion of Bravo and Pollard in the place of Carter and Cottrell/Holder, will admit that it would have been a more balanced side and makes more sense. And I hasten to add that Mr. Holder as captain is scandalous since he could not make the team normally as a player. And Vicecaptain Marlon Samuels’
method of dismissal in the third test, the T20 and first one day international does not require me to comment. It is clear for all to see that apart from the team being better off with Bravo as the allrounder to Russell, Holder will be out of his debts to handle this situation. As a matter of fact, he may become a liability to the team unless he drastically improves on his control and length. I am sorry, but I am of the firm opinion that at 23 years of age with his height, it is a waste of attributes for him to be bowling at his pedestrian pace. I believe that that the selectors should have picked the best players for the World Cup and say to them in clear language what are the expectations. And, if the results were not forthcoming, then restructuring will become absolutely necessary going forward. Despite being an optimist, I will be very surprised if this West Indies team goes past the preliminary rounds. I will be the first to offer a public apology if the reach the finals. Yours truly, Eric Whaul.
GTTA to host talent showcase The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is expected to showcase its next generation of players, including Cadets, 15 years and under players and juniors 18 years and under from 9am on February 1 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The GTTA is extending an invitation to cadet and junior players around the country to take part. The association “will meet after this tournament to shortlist players to continue preparing for the Caribbean Cadet/Junior Table Tennis tournament scheduled for April in the Dominican Republic, also to set a date to meet with parents,” a press release highlighted. Those wishing to participate in the tournament will have to register before a January 30 deadline. The format of the tournament includes two stages.
Groups will be conformed as necessary, and they will compete according to a Round Robin system. In addition, the matches will be played using the current International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rules: 11 point game; best of five or best of seven games; two points alternate serve and the first two players of each group will qualify for the final stage. In the quarterfinals for the juniors, it will be seven games to win four, while the cadet will be five games to win three by a Simple Elimination System. The association also informed that on February 8, the GTTA will be going through a fitness test for national and future national table tennis players, as part of the GTTA selection criteria, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, begin-

WARNER FINED CCC teach Jaguars a OVER ROHIT SPAT lesson with 1-wkt win NAGICO Super50 cricket
Guyana still advance to Thursday’s semi-final By Sean Devers in Trinidad In Association with Carib Beer, GT&T Lifetime Reality & Cascadia Hotel
Rohit Sharma and the Australian fielders exchange a few words. (Getty Images) ESPNcricinfo - David Warner has defended his use of the words “speak English” during an on-field squabble with Rohit Sharma during Sunday’s ODI at the MCG, but has been fined 50% of his match fee over the incident. Warner admitted during a radio interview yesterday morning that he was in the wrong by engaging with Rohit. The incident occurred at the end of the 23rd over of India’s innings, when India took an overthrow and the Australians showed their displeasure, seemingly believing the ball had ricocheted off Rohit’s legs. Replays suggested that was not necessarily the case, but during the crossover at the end of the over the umpire had to step in to hose down a verbal stoush between Warner and Rohit. “On the cricket etiquette side of things when you throw a ball to the keeper and it hits a player you don’t run,” Warner said on Sky Sports Radio on Monday. “A few of the boys said something to him and when I went over to say something he sort of said something in their language and I said ‘speak English’, because if you’re going to say something for me to understand theoretically, I cannot speak Hindi. “So I did the polite thing and asked him to speak English, therefore he did, and I can’t repeat what he said. I thought I was okay by asking him to speak English and I’m going to say it a couple of times if he keeps saying it in
Hindi. I got slapped on the wrist yesterday by the ICC, I shouldn’t have engaged him and should have went to the other side to my fielding position, but I didn’t. “The guys behind the wicket said it hit him. I walked in because I presumed it hit him as well. I was in the wrong. What he was saying to me I asked him to speak English. I got in trouble for engaging the player, which technically you’re not allowed to do that now … You’re not supposed to walk at the player. It was between overs and I should have walked around to my fielding position.” Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann said his side would always “teeter pretty close to” the line of acceptability, but he admitted the WarnerRohit incident was not a good look for the game. Lehmann said Australia supported Warner’s aggressive style but would work with him to ensure his behaviour was within acceptable standards. “It’s not a great look,” Lehmann said. “The ICC have done something about it. At the end of the day we have to work better at those situations and get better as a group ... Davey said he’s been fined 50%, so we’ll deal with that and move on. It’s not an ideal scenario, but we’ve got to make sure we’re playing the cricket we want to play without crossing the line. “David’s an aggressive character and we support that. It’s just making sure he does the right things on the
ground, and he knows that more than most. We’ll work with him with that. We’ve just got to be mindful of the game of cricket, it’s an important entertainment spectacle for people around the world. We’ve got to make sure we play hard but fair, and don’t cross the line.” The incident led to a wide range of criticism, including an editorial in the Sydney Morning Herald that slammed Warner’s actions and cricket’s lack of leadership in dealing with sledging. “Warner has confirmed he used the words, but says he did so politely,” the newspaper said. “His intentions certainly did not look polite. Warner deserves to be roundly condemned. Remarks such as these have no place on the cricket field or anywhere else. “[F]ines are no deterrent to poor behaviour if that behaviour helps a side dominate its opponent. That is not good enough. Effective deterrence is needed here. Whatever measures are adopted in response to unacceptable sledging should be designed to stamp the practice out.” The stoush marred Australia’s four-wicket win at the MCG, where there were also serious concerns about Australia’s shoddy over-rate during India’s innings. Standin captain George Bailey was suspended for the next match against England in Hobart on Friday after Australia’s bowling effort went 26 minutes over time.
The Guyana Jaguars advanced to the first semi-final on Thursday although they somehow managed the snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, suffering a sensational one wicket loss to the Combined, Colleges and Campuses (CCC) Maroons in their final preliminary round match in the NAGICO Super50 cricket tournament at the Queens Park Oval under lights. Set 172 to win CCC seem out of the contest until Skipper Chris Barnwell made a costly blunder in handing the ball for the last over to leftarm Bajan pacer Raymond Reifer, whose only over in competition was bowled last night and cost 10 including two wides, instead of Paul Wintz whose figures read 70-26-2. Eleven runs were needed off Reifer’s over and three wides and two boundaries by Chris Powell, including the last one off the final ball with three required, sealed the issue with the last pair at the crease as Powell smashed Reifer back past his ankles like a shot from a gun to for a
pulsating last ball win much to the dismay of few Jaguars fans in the mostly empty stands. Chris Powell and his unrelated namesake Ravman Powell shared in 48-run ninth wicket stand while last man Ryan Austin (4*), who hit a crucial square driven boundary off the last ball of the 48th over from Veerasammy Permaul, ensured that the last five produced 49 runs to send the CCC players into wild celebrations as if they had won the entire tournament. Although last night’s victory put CCC level on six points with the Windwards who beat Barbados in Tobago in the other Zone ‘A’ match yesterday, the Islanders mammoth 374-6 in 50 overs ensured that they advanced to the semis along with Zone leaders Guyana on a better net run rate. Led by 39 from Royston Crandon, 33 from Shiv Chanderpaul and an unbeaten 30 from Permaul, the Jaguars, thanks to a late order rally, reached 171-9 off their allotted 50 overs with debutant pacer Rovman Powell picking up 3-20 from 10 overs, legspinner Kevon Cottoy (2-45) and Kyle Mayers (2-27) offering support. Wintz, in his first match of the competition, picked up two quick wickets while
Chadwick Walton (7) was run out as the Students slipped to 39-3 before left-hander Paul Palmer’s painstaking 32 from 94 balls steadied the rocking ship, but came to slowly and put pressure on other scorers at an asking rate that had reached 14 runs per over. When the 23-year-old Palmer, who looked organized, was removed by Devendra Bishoo the Students were 957 and seemingly out of the contest. However, the Powells joined forces and aided by some ordinary fielding and catching by the Jaguars in addition to some poor bowling from Permaul and Reifer in last few overs, tuned the game in CCC’s favour. Ravman Powell hit three sixes in 31 from 30 balls after a slow start and when he was LBW to Barnwell at 160-9 the Students required 12 more to win with their last pair at the crease and Chris Powell 27 from 29 balls with four boundaries got them over the line in a game which went down to the wire. Wintz and Bishoo (10-1-19-2), Steven Jacobs (10-2-21-0) and Royston Crandon (10-0-30-0) all produced frugal spells. Earlier the Jaguars won the toss and elected to bat on another good batting track in bright sunshine after early (Continued on page 25)
Brazilians head to China... (From page 30) five - and securing the right personnel remains a serious challenge, both on and off the field, Cuca said. “I’m taking back a kit man we hired,” he said. “Every player there washes their own kit. We are taking over a doctor, too. “They have good doctors there but they are inexperienced. They don’t have nutrition, it’s not balanced like here. Before the games they eat stuff you wouldn’t believe. So it is up to the coach to help that kind of professional evolution as well.” BIG BUCKS But money and peace of mind are the biggest lures. China may become a football force in the future, but the game there has taken time to develop. They have only reached the World Cup finals once, in 2002 when they lost all three matches without scoring, but they have made it through to the last eight of the
current Asian Cup in Australia. Despite their huge potential and potential to excel, they have never won their continental title, with their bestplaced finishes runners-up in 1984 and 2004 when they hosted the event. However the average attendance at domestic league matches is higher than in Brazil without making the same demands on players. Players say they work in peace and get huge salaries in return. “I am getting four times what I got at Sao Paulo,” Aloisio, Shandong’s Brazilian winger, told Reuters. “It was an offer I couldn’t turn down, it was my future and the future of my family.” The Chinese clubs pay the players’ tax bills and they are paid on time, unlike in Brazil, where the financial mismanagement of most clubs mean players frequently go unpaid for months. “In Brazil, almost a third goes on taxes and it is diffi-
cult to get paid,” Cuca said. “In China you are guaranteed to get your money on time. I’m not going to lie, I came here firstly to ensure my financial independence.” Cuca said the cultural aspects were also appealing. He has visited Korea, Thailand, and Japan for Asian Champions League games and he is able to brush shoulders with personalities such as Marcello Lippi, the man who guided Italy to the 2006 World Cup and is now director of football at Guangzhou. However, he warned his compatriots to weigh up the consequences before making the move east. “Brazilians who go, as I do, have to realise that you disappear,” he said. “The media doesn’t see what you do. If you score three goals in China and one here in Brazil the one is worth much more. The players have to have a long a think about it with their families.”

Alia’s coach impressed Charles’ 177 tops with Jamaican swimmers Pride in high-scorer
Coach Christopher Anderson (left) shares his expertise with national swimmer Angara Sinclair during the Alia Atkinson three day national swim camp at the National Aquatic Centre on Saturday. (PHOTO: GARFIELD ROBINSON) Jamaica Observer CHRISTOPHER Anderson Jr, coach of Short Course World Championship 100-metre breaststroke champion and world record holder Alia Atkinson, believes that Jamaica’s swimming programme is on the right course. Anderson hinted at the prospect of more Alia Atkinsons, after viewing the talent of national squad members at a swim camp hosted by himself and Atkinson in collaboration with the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ). The three-day camp, which ended Sunday, focused on assisting the swimmers with power and speed. They were extensively trained on the basic techniques of swimming to test their speed, strength and competitiveness. “We have been doing a lot of athletic movements in the water, as well as some different speed drills and picking up tempo on most of their strokes,” Anderson told the Jamaica Observer after Saturday evening’s session at the
National Aquatics Centre. Anderson, who has been working with Atkinson for over 12 years, expressed delight at the prowess of the swimmers from various agegroups. “We were trying to reinforce what they were already doing. There is a lot of talent as far as Jamaica’s swimming is concerned, especially in the national group and the developmental programme. “I am pleased with what I have seen this year. I have been here many times, and this is one of the stronger groups I have seen in terms of being in shape and prepared for a camp like this and they are doing very well,” he beamed. Meanwhile, national coach Gillian Millwood explained that the GraceKennedy Money Services (GKMS)-sponsored camp was a major thrust to the team’s preparations for a busy calendar year. “We have been having a lot of fun; our camp late last year combined with this one has really set the pace for us coming into the new year.
Spending some time with Alia and coach Chris helps us to be renewed and re-inspired for some awesome performances this year,” she told the Jamaica Observer. She added: “The swimmers are excited; they are getting a lot more insight and encouragement from a world champion swimmer and her coach. It’s just this huge boost...in a country where they weren’t getting that much support [and] they are getting that pump now. “I am really happy that this camp happened and I hope it keeps happening. I hope we can make this a staple on our schedule even when she (Alia) retires from swimming, to come back and continue this camp.” Their first major assignment for the year will be the 29th staging of the Carifta Swimming Championships in Barbados. Prior to that, they will participate in a number of local development meets. The Tornadoes Sprint Development meet scheduled to take place on Saturday will be the first on the calendar.
SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – West Indies batsman Johnson Charles stroked a career-best hundred to help Windward Islands Volcanoes beat Barbados Pride by 55 runs and eliminate the defending champions from the NAGICO Super50 here yesterday. Playing at Shaw Park, the Windwards rattled up an imposing 374 for six off 50 overs, with the right-handed opener Charles blasting 177 off 124 deliveries – the highest ever score in the tournament’s history. Sunil Ambris and Shane Shillingford both stroked 45 down the order while opener Devon Smith chimed in with 37 and Keddy Lesporis, 31. Seamer Javon Searles led for Barbados with three for 60
as the entire attack suffered at the hands of Charles’ onslaught. In reply, captain Kevin Stoute hammered a cameo top score of 82 at the top of the order and though Shamarh Brooks (61) and Shai Hope (58) chipped in with half-centuries, the order was simply too tall for the Barbadians. They finished on 319 all out off 49 overs as left-arm pacer Delorn Johnson with four for 63 and off-spinner Shane Shillingford, with two for 62, undermined the innings. The defeat left Barbados without a win for the competition after their first match against Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners was rained out without a ball bowled, and
they lost their second match to Guyana last Saturday. Summary Scores: Windward Islands Volcanoes Innings: 374/6 (50 Overs). Johnson Charles 177, Shane Shillingford 45, Sunil Ambris 45, Devon Smith 37; Javon Searles 9-0-60-3, Jomel Wa r r i c a n 10-1-65-1, Ashley Nurse 6-0-45-1, Kevin Stoute 7-0-62-1. Barbados Pride Innings: 319 All Out (49 Overs). Kevin Stoute* 82, Shai Hope 58, Shamarh Brooks 61, Kraigg Brathwaite 38; Delorn Johnson 9-0-63-4, Shane Shillingford 10-0-622, Liam Sebastien 10-0-55-1, Mervin Mathew 9-0-54-1. Result: Windward Islands Volcanoes won by 55 runs.
MELBOURNE (Reuters) Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova glittered under the Rod Laver Arena lights yesterday, restoring order at the Australian Open after eight women’s seeds crashed out in the afternoon sun on a manic opening day. The evergreen Federer strolled into the second round with a classy 6-4 6-2 7-5 win over Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun before fellow second seed Sharapova ruined Croatian qualifier Petra Martic’s 24th birthday with a 6-4 6-1 victory. Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray also enjoyed comfortable wins as three of the men’s ‘Big Four’ shook out the early-season rust. Although the retired Li Na is not defending her singles title, the glowing Chinese stole the spotlight from the players when she announced she was expecting her first child with husband and former coach Jiang Shan. “I think Dennis (Jiang) is doing a good job. He just made one ace,” said the 32year-old crowd favorite on the Rod Laver Arena, sparking cheers from the terraces. The hole left by the twice grand slam champion’s abse n c e i s b e g g i n g t o b e filled and a rejuvenated Sharapova, dressed to kill in a smart red outfit, looked the part in a controlled display against the outgunned Martic. Federer joined Sharapova in the winners’ circle at the
Brisbane International this month and, on his coach Stefan Edberg’s 49th birthday, the Swiss notched his 1,001st tour win. “Winning in the first round, it’s always a bit of a relief. I thought I played good,” the 33-year-old told reporters after dashing around the court like a frantic teenager against the 47thranked Lu. GLORIOUS DAY While seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard advanced with a straight-sets victory over 98th-ranked German Anna-Lena Friedsam, half of the 16 women’s seeds in action were swept away before the sun had set on a glorious day. Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic was the highest-profile casualty, the former world number one falling in three sets to doubles specialist Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic. Ninth-seeded German Angelique Kerber blamed a “bad day” at the office after being dumped out by Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu in three topsy-turvy sets. Lucie Safarova (16), Carla Suarez Navarro (17) and twice grand slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova (27) were also among the eight sent packing. It was steadier going on the men’s side where an undercooked Nadal felt the confidence flooding back after thrashing Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny. Coming back after a long layoff from injury and illness,
Nadal gloomily ruled himself out of title contention before the event but the Spaniard eased quickly into the grand slam groove with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 win. “This first match here was tough mentally for me,” the 2009 champion said on center court, resplendent in a pink shirt and a fluorescent yellow headband. “I hope this match will give me confidence as I play the next round.” VERYDIFFICULT Sixth seed Murray, bidding for a maiden Australian Open title after three trips to the final, opened up with a 63 6-4 7-6 (3) win over Indian qualifier Yuki Bhambri, occasionally berating himself but pleased overall with his display at the refurbished Margaret Court Arena. “The whole match he made it very difficult, he played very aggressively,” Murray said of Bhambri, the lowest-ranked player in the draw at 317. “He shouldn’t be ranked 300 in the world.” Romania’s Simona Halep, seeded third and fancied to break through for a maiden grand slam title this year, had few worries in a 6-3 6-2 rout of Italian Karin Knapp. Men’s seventh seed Tomas Berdych went through without fuss while number 10 Grigor Dimitrov, tipped to rock the tennis establishment after a breakout 2014 season, showed ominous form with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory over German Dustin Brown.

Patriots crush Colts, to play Seahawks in Super Bowl FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (Reuters) Tom Brady fired three touchdown passes and LeGarrette Blount rumbled for three more as the New England Patriots demolished the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 on Sunday to book their sixth trip to the Super Bowl in 14 years. The Patriots head to Arizona for the Feb. 1 National Football League showcase where they will face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, who clinched their return with a heartpounding 28-22 overtime comeback win over the Green Bay Packers. Seattle will be bidding to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Brady took the Patriots to consecutive titles in 2004 and 2005. The rout gives the Patriots an eighth Super Bowl appearance, tying them with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys for the most in league history. While the NFC championship was heavy with drama, there was no edge-of-your-seat excitement at rainy Gillette Stadium as the Patriots charged to a 14-0 firstquarter lead and never were threatened, giving coach Bill Belichick his 21st career playoff victory to break the record he shared with Tom

Cooper-USA TODAY Sports Landry. Brady, who had already thrown more post-season touchdowns than any quarterback, added a hattrick to his total, hitting James Develin, Nate Solder and favorite target Rob Gronkowski to bring his career tally to 50. “We put a lot of work in this year, worked our tails off to get to this point, it’s nice to close the deal,” said Brady. “We’ve got one more to go. I know we’ve had some ups and downs this year but right now we are up baby and we’re going to try to stay up for one more game.” As Brady was picking apart the Colts secondary, Blount was grinding it out on
the ground, rushing for 148 yards on 30 carries including touchdowns of one, 13 and two yards. Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who led the NFL in touchdown passes this season with 40, could not manage any against a swarming New England defense. Luck, now 0-4 against the Patriots since he entered the league as the number one overall pick in the 2012 draft, completed just 12 of 33 passes for 126 yards and was picked off twice. Z u r l o n Ti p t o n h a d Indianapolis’s lone score on a one-yard run in the second quarter. “It’s a disappointing loss,
nobody wants to end their season that way but we’ll learn from this,” said Colts coach Chuck Pagano. “We took another step forward in the right direction. “We were playing good football, coming off a big win and we ran into a buzz saw. They beat us in every phase of the game.” For all their success, Brady and his bunch are still hungry having gone 10 years since their 2005 Super Bowl triumph, when New England won a third title in a fouryear span. Since then, they have been unable to add to their Super Bowl resume losing close encounters to the New York Giants in 2008 and 2012.
Vonn makes history with 63rd World Cup win CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy, (Reuters) - Lindsey Vonn became the most successful female in Alpine skiing World Cup history when she won a Super-G on Monday, her 63rd victory in the competition. American Vonn was tied with Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell (1970-80) on 62 wins after her triumph in Sunday’s downhill at the same Italian course. The 2010 Olympic champion, winner of three downhills since her return in December from a 12-month injury absence, skied flawlessly on Monday to clock a time of one minute 27.03 seconds. “It’s really a perfect comeback, it’s like a dream,” Vonn told reporters after finishing 0.85 seconds ahead of World Cup champion

boyfriend Tiger Woods. “Yes, Tiger came. It was such a surprise. He kept sending me texts saying, ‘I’m with you’,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it. It was important for him to be here with my family on a day like this.” The four-times overall World Cup winner
has collected 32 victories in the downhill, 21 in the Super-G, an event that did not exist in Moser-Proell’s time, three in the giant slalom, two slaloms and five combineds. “I have given a lot to the sport and I have received so much in return. When I started Alpine skiing my goal was to win one race,” said Vonn. “Now I belong to the history of the sport. It’s difficult to put into words what it means to me,” said the American who has had two knee operations in the last two seasons. “It was in Annemarie’s hands for so long, 35 years is a long time. I hope it stays with me a little while,” added Vonn of her record. The men’s record of 86 wins is held by Swede Ingemar Stenmark.

Reifer pleased with top drawer knock
Raymon Reifer
T
rinidad Express - Port of Span, Trinidad Raymon Reifer described as “top drawer” his unbeaten innings of 84 which helped the Guyana Jaguars edge past the Barbados Pride in Saturday’s crucial Nagico Super50 Group A clash on Saturday. The performance and victory was extra special for Reifer, a native of Barbados, given the opposition was from his home island. “It motivated me a bit more,” Reifer told WICB Media after the game. But he added that, “at the end of the day, it’s franchise cricket, so whichever team I play for I’m going to come and play my hardest, be it Barbados, Guyana, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands, I gonna come and put my best foot forward.” Reifer also noted of his match-winning effort: “You have to be able to do these things if you want to play for West Indies because you can’t go out there at this level, not performing and expect to win games, so you have to practice it from here.” Speaking of the experience of playing in Guyana, Reifer, the lone non-national in the Jaguars’ squad said: “It was a bit hard at first going to Guyana because the wickets are a lot different compared to Barbados. There is a lot more spin and stuff, so it challenged me to get a lot better at spin and I’m glad for the experience. I’m gonna continue working hard be it Guyana, wherever I play and gain a lot of experience.” And Reifer has also fitted into the dressing room comfortably and said the Jaguars back themselves, whether they win or lose. “There are not many big names in our team but there are guys to get the job done,” he said.

Brazilians head to China for cash and calm
SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Better infrastructure and bigger salaries paid on time are prompting a new wave of Brazilians to emigrate to China, with players and coaches making the move for cash and relative football stability. Two of the top players in Brazil’s Serie A signed for Chinese clubs this month, joining more than a dozen who are already there. Diego Tardelli, 29, left Atletico Mineiro for Shandong Luneng at the weekend for more than $5.0 million (£3.3 million) and Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande paid almost three times that for Ricardo Goulart, the attacking midfielder who was third top scorer in Serie A last year. He is only 23. Both players featured in recent Brazil squads and their departure is seen as an indication of China’s growing allure. “China reminds me a lot of Japan in years gone by,” said Cuca, the former Atletico Mineiro coach who signed Tardelli for Shandong Luneng. “The Japanese market was strong and they looked to Brazil to learn (footballing) values. “That is what is happening with China today. They are trying to learn from the different schools and have players from lots of different countries.” Cuca, who moved to China after guiding Atletico Mineiro to their first ever Libertadores Cup in 2012, said working

NATIONAL GK COACH ON PATH TO WIDENING POOL Brazil’s Diego Tardelli REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon conditions in China are light years ahead of even the biggest Brazilian clubs. “No team in Brazil has an infrastructure like the team I am at in China,” he told Reuters on Saturday after Shandong lost 3-1 to Palmeiras in a pre-season friendly. “Land is easier there, we have seven pitches, each one better than the next, there’s all-weather pitches, full size, seven-a-side. “Each player has his own suite. We have all the latest you can imagine in terms of physical infrastructure.” The Chinese Super League has imported foreign players from countries as diverse as Bosnia, Jamaica and Zambia – each team can sign up to (Continued on page 27 )
Following the announcement of a 26man squad that will be encamped from Thursday ahead of the February 1st international friendly against host Barbados, National Goalkeeper Coach Andrew ‘Flours’ Hazel and Technical team are on the path of widening the goalkeeper pool. In the 26-man list that was released to the public last week, two goalkeepers would have been included in Oswald Cornette, O’Neil Carter and overseas based Akel Clarke but the Technical Staff has since sought to evaluate three more players in this specialist area. Speaking with Kaieteur
- three players benefit Sport, Andrew Hazel, the National Goalkeeper Coach who has been holding that position since 2009 said that the decision was taken by the Technical staff to take a look at some other contenders for the position with a view of widening the pool. ”As a result of that we invited Rondell Allen of Grove Hi Tech, Derville Stuart of Riddim Squad and Romario James who is based in the USA.” Hazel informed that the players were taken through the paces over a twoday period at the National Park and showed a high level
of commitment and teamwork throughout the sessions. The players were exposed to sessions on positional awareness, distribution, crossing, body positioning, agility and the technique of catching among others. ”The sessions were well received by these players and I do believe that we have achieved something from the short investment. We will now sit down as a Technical Staff and look back at what was done before taking a decision going forward.” (Franklin Wilson)

The bad news is that tragedy has hit the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis camp and the highly anticipated bout against Jamaican 2014 ‘Contender ’ Champion, Sakima Mullings, for the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) welterweight title has been temporarily aborted. The good news is that world rater and multiple champion, Clive Atwell, has agreed to fill in for Lewis and will now tackle the Jamaican in a fight that has caught the imagination of the pundits. Lewis was scheduled to square off with Mullings at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Saturday February 21 following successful negotiations with Mullings’ handlers and members of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC). Reports are that while engaged in sparring sessions Lewis incurred a serious injury and Board Doctor, Max Hanoman determined that the former world champion would not recover in time for the bout. confirmed that they are in discussions with Atwell to make the Mullings fight a reality and has received a commitment from him towards that end. Kaieteur Sport then contacted Atwell from his base in Dominica and he said that he has already started preparations for the bout. As a matter of fact, the multiple champion was just about to leave home to engage in some roadwork. He said that he will be in Guyana over the coming weekend. “I’m happy to be fighting in Guyana once again,” he said while confirming the authenticity of the bout. He said that he would have liked to have at least 8 weeks to prepare but is confident that he could whip himself into shape for the impending bout. He also said that he has weighed the pros and cons and decided that taking the fight is far more beneficial than rejecting it. “Every time I reject a fight I end up being out of the ring for 7 and 9 months then have to start over and that’s hard for me,” admitted Atwell as he justified his decision to
accept the bout. Quizzed on his chances at winning the bout Atwell said, “I will win; I’ve always told myself that if I lost 3 fights in a row I’m chucking it in and I’m not yet ready to quit so ……” This reporter then asked Atwell a straight question, “Are you in good mental shape after your losses and can you beat Mullings?” Without skipping a beat Atwell responded, “Yes I can! I am not convinced that I have lost my last two fights; they were prematurely terminated by the referee and I remain adamant that had the fight been allowed to continue the decisions would have been different.” This fight will headline a 5 bouts card that will also see the return of CABOFE middleweight champion, Lindener, Edmond DeClou after sustaining a broken jaw in a fight against Dereck Richmond in October 2013. This will be an 8 rounds middleweight contest and DeClou will be out to prove that he has recovered sufficiently from the mishap to avenge the loss. Another (Continued to page 26)
