Eyewitness tells a tale of murder … Relatives accuse police of refusing to take action What was first through of as a motorcycle accident that led to the death of Vickram Sohan called ‘Robby’, 20; a cane cutter of Betsy Ground, East Canje Berbice is now turning out to be more than that. According to his mother, Jaiwantie Singh, called ‘Lay, Lay’ of Betsy Ground, Sohan was found in an unconscious state in a clump of bushes at New Forest, East Canje Berbice on September 14, last with motorcycle CD 5091 on top of him. He was picked up by relatives and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital the following day. He was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital on October 15. He returned to the New Amsterdam Hospital after the doctors had given up on him. His relatives took him to the Woodlands Hospital on October 16. He died there on October 21, 2014. The post mortem examination revealed that he died from massive head injuries, a fractured spine and bronchopneumonia. His chest and armpits were red and swollen. The entire scenario was a mystery to relatives since some of his injuries were not consistent with a motor cycle accident. They wondered how he got all of those injuries and the motor cycle had little damage. The motor cycle was on top of him, the helmet was smashed in and his foot was almost burnt to the bone from the exhaust of the bike. The mystery was unfolded five days after Sohan was buried, when an eye witness came forward and told the family that Sohan’s death was not due to an accident, that he was
Vickram Sohan murdered. The culprits were some of Sohan good friends with whom he used to hang out. The relatives concluded that he was murdered because his killer’s wife was previously friendly with an overseas-based Guyanese who got annoyed because the woman was now in love with Sohan. The eyewitness, Lakeram Pooran, called ‘Rice’, 17, said that he was collected by the overseas-based Guyanese ‘Vickram’, ‘Labba’ ‘Buddo’ and ‘Kittle Boy’. Pooran stated that he, Sohan, and the four men were close friends. He said that he was not told where they were going, but on their way to New Forest he noticed Sohan riding in the opposite direction. He said that as the car was about to pass Sohan, ‘Labba’
took a wood and struck Sohan behind his head. Sohan wobbled and rode for a distance. The men turned the car around, came out and went to Sohan. They took their shirts and blocked the car windows, so he could only see through the back windscreen. They parked the car by a sluice and started to beat Sohan who fought back. The now dead Sohan reportedly cuff ‘Buddo’ in his eye, flooring him. The men then held on to Sohan and Labba struck him across his chest. ‘Buddo’ then struck him a couple of times across his head. He said that ‘Kittle Boy’ and ‘Buddo’ then pulled him to where the motor cycle was and ‘Kittle Boy’, ‘Buddo’ and ‘Labba’ then lifted the bike and placed it on top of Sohan. All the time ‘Vickram’ was folding his arm and laughing and the men were saying “you wife gon suck a good wood.” The men then returned to the car placed a knife at his throat telling him to put his tongue under his teeth. The car then drove away. He said he was actually held hostage for the rest of the time. He was collected in the morning and held by the Continued on page 11

US Court rules sentencing to go ahead for Guyana-born politician Albert Baldeo, a Guyanaborn, Democratic district leader and candidate for city and state office, who has been fighting jail time after being found guilty in August by a US Court for obstructing justice, is to be sentenced on January 21. According to court documents of the United States District Court, New York, Baldeo’s motions to have his judgment of acquittal and for a new trial were denied in their entirety. On August 11, Baldeo was found guilty of obstructing justice, after a two-week trial, though he was acquitted of mail and wire fraud charges. More than two years ago, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara indicted Baldeo for orchestrating a straw donor scheme to funnel illegal contributions to his 2010 campaign for City Council. Baldeo, Bharara alleged at the time, also asked his straw donors to lie to federal investigators once he learned the feds were probing the scheme. Baldeo, a Richmond Hill attorney who also nearly unseated a Republican state senator in 2006, faced 10 charges and was acquitted on all, three of which were related
to mail and wire fraud, according to court documents. He was found guilty on the seven other charges related to conspiracy and obstructing justice. The fact that Albert Baldeo lost his election does not excuse his corrupt conduct. The court found that he lied and instructed others to lie to law enforcement agents investigating the source of his campaign contributions, and threatened and intimidated others in order to conceal the truth, the US Attorney said. Each of the seven charges carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. A group known as “People for Baldeo” had defended Mr. Baldeo for being acquitted on the mail and wire fraud charges. “It is clear that our precious tax dollars are being spent in targeting Mr. Baldeo selectively and vindictively and this lynching must be stopped. We challenge all right thinking people to condemn these grave civil, human rights, constitutional and voting rights violations,” the group said. “We demand an immediate end to this political witch hunt of Albert Baldeo,
Albert Baldeo and call upon these agencies which are funded by our tax dollars to stop this harassment and vendetta against him now!” The court in turning down Baldeo’s application for acquittal and a new trial said, that the defendant admitted that he provided the straw donors with false money orders along with false documents, but not with the intent to obtain city funds, as alleged in this indictment, but rather to avoid a penalty for not repaying his loan to the campaign prior to election day. In other words, his crime was not the one charged in the indictment.
New Approach on Buying HIV Drugs Will Save US$100 Million - PANCAP - Pooled Procurement Mechanism to lower price The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is putting into place a new agreement for purchasing HIV medication that will save close to US$100 million over two years, money that can be reinvested in lifesaving drugs and programs all over the world, according to Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP). The Agency noted that by using a Pooled Procurement Mechanism, the agreement means lower prices, swifter delivery and more predictable and sustainable long-term supply – delivering on the goals of the Global Fund’s Market Shaping Strategy. “It also yields greater transparency, reducing risks and expenses for countries
that implement programs treating people with HIV. The new approach will also deliver better HIV medication options for children. The improvements were achieved by bundling the purchase of high volume drugs with lower volume ones which are sometimes more difficult to obtain. Negotiators also focused on improved shelf life and active pharmaceutical ingredient security.” PANCAP underscored. The Global Fund is entering agreements with eight suppliers, with three of them as long-term strategic partnerships. “As well as expanding the supply of life-saving medicines, our new approach will provide deep and sustained savings, to the benefit of people living with HIV across the world,” said Christopher Game, Chief Procurement Officer at the Global Fund. Making public health resources go further is a core priority of the Global Fund, Mr. Game said. Savings from the new agreement on HIV medication are equivalent to providing anti-retroviral drugs to an additional 400,000 people for two years.
“Just as important,” Mr. Game added, “we are shaping the market for these lifesaving drugs, to make them more effective, reliable and affordable for people who really need them.” Using the Pooled Procurement Mechanism involved a detailed analysis to determine which suppliers could sustainably provide medications at significant scale and quality to meet the needs of both adults and children living with HIV. This involved visits to manufacturers of both finished and raw materials and built on work with key partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Government of South Africa, Médecins Sans Frontières, Pan American Health Organization, The United States President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), UNICEF, UNITAID, USAID and the World Health Organization. As of late 2014, the Global Fund has provided financial support programs that put 7.3 million people on antiretroviral medication, a 20 per cent increase over the past year.

Indonesia naval captain says may have located missing plane’s tail section (Reuters) - An Indonesian naval patrol vessel has found what could be the tail of a crashed AirAsia passenger jet, the section where the crucial black box voice and flight data recorders are located, officials said on Monday. News of the possible breakthrough came as the transport ministry in Jakarta said some officials on duty at the time of the accident will be moved to other roles. It also announced it was tightening rules on pre-flight procedures. Ships and aircraft scouring the northern Java Sea for debris and bodies from the Airbus A320-200 have widened their search to allow for currents eight days after Flight QZ8501 plunged into the water en route from Indonesia’s second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board. “We found what has a high probability of being the tail of the plane,” Yayan Sofyaný, captain of the patrol vessel, told reporters. He was speaking after his ship returned to the port in Surabaya on Monday, and it was not immediately clear if he was referring to one of the five large objects pinpointed by search vessels over the weekend. Indonesia’s meteorological agency has said seasonal tropical storms probably contributed to the Dec. 28 crash and the weather has persistently hampered efforts to recover bodies and find the cockpit voice and flight data recorders that should explain why the plane crashed into the sea. The recorders are housed in the tail section of the Airbus, making retrieval of that part of the aircraft crucial. “I am not saying it’s the tail yet,” the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, told a news conference in Jakarta. “That is suspected. Now we are trying to confirm it.” TRANSPORT MINISTRY CRACKDOWN The transport ministry said some officials at the country’s airport operator and air traffic control agency who were involved with the AirAsia flight will be moved to other duties while the accident investigation is completed. The ministry gave no reason. It also said that, three days after the crash, it had issued a directive making it mandatory for pilots to be briefed in person by an airline official on weather conditions and other operational issues
before every flight. “A circular has been signed by the transport ministry on December 31, stating that pilots must have a face-to-face briefing with a flight operation officer so the briefing officer will know the pilot is in a healthy condition and so on,” said Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director general of air transportation. Aviation experts said this was a common practice in the industry, but it was not immediately clear if it has been normal procedure in Indonesia. The main focus of the search is about 90 nautical miles off the coast of Borneo island, where five large objects believed to be parts of the plane - the largest about 18 meters (59 feet) long - have been located in shallow waters by ships using sonar. While experts say the shallow sea should make the recovery fairly straightforward in good weather, strong winds and big waves have frustrated the multinational force of ships and divers that has converged at the site. “The seas haven’t been very friendly, but the black boxes have a 30-day life and they will be able to find them,” said Peter Marosszeky, a senior aviation research fellow at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. “It’s the weather that is causing the delay.” Thirty-seven bodies of the mostly Indonesian passengers and crew have been recovered, including some still strapped in their seats. Many more may be
trapped in the body of the aircraft. LICENSE CONFUSION Indonesia AirAsia has come under pressure from authorities, who have suspended its SurabayaSingapore license, saying the carrier only had permission to fly the route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flight QZ8501 took off on a Sunday. It was not immediately clear what difference, if any, the day of the week had on the Dec. 28 flight, and Murjatmodjo made clear that the investigations of the route and the crash were separate. “Please differentiate between the probe into flight licenses and the air crash investigation,” he said. Singapore’s civil aviation authority and its Changi Airport Group said AirAsia had the necessary approvals to operate a daily flight between Surabaya and Singapore. Indonesia AirAsia is 49 percent owned by Malaysiabased budget carrier AirAsia, whose shares fell nearly 5 percent on Monday. While the license investigation could have serious consequences for the airline’s operations, insurance industry experts said insurers were expected to pay claims whether or not the airline was properly licensed to fly on the day. The crash was the first fatal accident suffered by the AirAsia budget group, whose Indonesian affiliate flies from at least 15 destinations across the archipelago.
Police union pushes for cop killings to be included in federal hate crimes law In the wake of the murder of two New York City police officers and a national debate about policing, the National Fraternal Order of Police is asking for the Congressional hate crimes statute to be expanded to include crimes against police officers. The union has more than 300,000 members.Violence against police officers that is motivated by anti-police bias should be prosecuted as a hate crime, the nation’s largest police union is arguing in a letter to President Barack Obama and Congressional leaders this week.”Right now, it’s a hate crime if you attack someone solely because of the color of their skin, but it ought to be a hate crime if you attack someone solely because of the color of their
uniform as well,” said Jim Pasco, the executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police.”Enough is enough! It’s time for Congress to do something to protect the men and women who protect us,” Chuck Canterbury, the president of the union, said in a statement Monday. The group has long lobbied for harsher punishment for those who harm law enforcement officers. The organization argues that “ambush attacks” - like the one in which NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were killed last month - are frequently motivated by hatred of the police. According to FBI statistics, about 21.7 percent of non-accidental law enforcement deaths since 2004 were ambush attacks.

Public education system not fully ready for... Dynamic Airways is best thing for Guyana... From page 15 to deliberate extensively on inclusive education. His utterances there would allow him to be subsequently included on a televised programme to again speak on the issue. Caesar however, recounted that at least two callers to the very programme were adamant that they did not want their children to be schooled with children with disabilities. “How selfish can we get?” questioned Caesar as he intimated that many ‘normal’ children are in fact, not in a dissimilar situation to that of children with disabilities upon entry to the school system. In 2012, the Education Ministry had fast-tracked its efforts towards attaining inclusive education with the observance of Education Month being, ‘Transforming the nation through inclusive education’. This strategic move, according to Manickchand, even then was aimed at ensur-
ing that children within the special needs population are included in the education system. Speaking of the issue too was former Head of the Special Education Unit, Karen Hall, who said that in order for inclusive education to really work in Guyana, “we have to find ways to make it work.” She referred to rigid laws and practices in the national framework that are currently in place. These must become a bit flexible and responsive for true inclusive education to be realised, she informed. She added that at the moment regulations do not allow for as few as two teachers to facilitate classrooms that include students with special needs. In encouraging inclusive education, about three teachers may be required in a single classroom at a time – a teacher-aid to deal directly with those with special needs, the subject teacher and the special education teacher, ac-
cording to Hall. “We definitely have to be a bit more flexible even in the way we view, for example, the number of teachers we assign to a school. We will have to build that component into our system where if there is a special needs child; a school won’t be considered overstaffed with three extra teachers. These are the things that we need to work on and work on pretty quickly,” Hall insisted. Currently, the Education Ministry has before the Parliament a New Education Bill, which has a component that deals specifically with the delivery of education to students with special needs. The Bill outlines that “the special education programme may take the form of an individual education plan tailored to suit the specific or individual needs of the student concerned.” And according to Minister Manickchand, the passage of the Bill is one that she anxiously awaits.

that he is a former GAC pilot and had not returned to Guyana for some 35 years. He said how impressed he was with the newly trained Guyanese flight attendants. He said up to meeting them, he always thought Japan Airlines had the best service in the world, followed by Jet Airways out of India, “... The ser-
vice you get from especially the cabin staff is by far the best I have seen in the world,” he stated. The media was also welcomed on board Dynamic's wide body Boeing 767-300 jet which carries up to 260 passengers. Sunday's flight left with some 220 passengers, Gouveia had stated.

Justin Prabhu, SJ and Samanthani. Fr. Ramesh Vanan, SJ -the Acting Director of the Centre and Fr. Paul Martin, SJ- the Superior of the Jesuits in Guyana. The chief guest at the graduation ceremony was Ms. Roxan Jagnarain, a cosmetologist from Berbice. According to Fr. Ramesh Vanan, the Jesuits in Guyana run this Centre. “It was established to be able to reach out
to the entire neighborhood with the aim of building up human communities where peace, joy and love exists, to promote inter-religious dialogue and to help educate Guyanese of all ages and race to develop skills which would enable them to make a life for themselves,” he said. Fr. Vanan urged the graduates not to be best in the world because, “It would be based on speed, competition or trends.” But he encouraged them to be best for the world. If they strived to be best for the world then their growth will be challenging, meaningful, fulfilling and most importantly, lifelong.
Mrs. Jagnarine said that life is full of challenges and one has to keep trying hard without giving up. She asked the graduates to set a goal and to pursue it. She also encouraged them not to let the fear of failure prevent them from doing what they dream to be. Angelita Amar, a member of the teaching staff expressed gratitude to everyone for attending. She related that new classes at the centre begin on January 12, next. Certificates and tokens of appreciation were then presented to the graduates and a special presentation was made to the guests of honour.
Awaiting yet another completion deadline... Adaptation of this technology will allow... From page 4 water from the EDWC into the Mahaica River via the Lama and Maduni Sluices. During heavy rainfall the Mahaica River and EDWC catchments, which are in the same region, are usually in flood mode simultaneously, and their water levels while in flood modes allow very little cross flows if any between them. Therefore significant discharges of flood water from EDWC through the Maduni and Lama sluices into the Mahaica River when it is in flood mode, to make a bad situation worse, has not been evident. Further, the estuary of the Mahaica River is heavily silted restricting discharges into the ocean. Because of this partial blockage of the river by shifting mud banks, flood water from the Mahaica catchment backs up as it flows downstream, overtopping its banks, in the process causing extensive damage. To address this problem requires another project. Minister Ramsammy was rather hypocritical when he stated that he was thankful to those experienced professionals who have objectively scrutinized and criticized HCP since its inception. He is fully aware that his Ministry and the PPP Governmet in general do not work collaboratively with those who do not share their political philosophy, and therefore they have not reached out beyond their insular circle of long term aides and recalibrated their thinking for fresh ideas in light of rapidly changing circumstances, but have remained secretive with respect to the planning of projects, award of con-
tracts, their costs and execution. Therefore those professionals who have been critical of the Government’s political manoeuvres with respect to these topics have had to use unorthodox methods to obtain the relevant information necessary for them to unearth and report on the Government’s clandestine practices as they relate to economic development, selection of projects, award of contracts and equipment purchases. Despite bona fide requests for site visits, Guyanese have been refused entry and locked out of construction sites to see how their taxes are being deployed. Public documents remain unavailable and there is no accountability on the expenditure of public funding for many of the projects being executed, as the legal imperatives are disregarded with impunity. HCP has been badly planned, designed, managed and executed by local personnel who lack the knowledge, experience and skills necessary to undertake complex projects but were nevertheless given assignments, not because of their competency, but because their services were relatively cheap and they were well-connected politically. Hence, the extensive failure of projects as a result of poor planning, design and execution, resulting in large time and cost overruns. Government personnel reviewing and overseeing these projects have not performed any better and instead of employing people with the knowledge and skills to assist them fill the gaps of their ex-
perience and competency as is done elsewhere to enable them do their job professionally, they blindly succumb to political micro-management in the execution of their duties which have led them into situations where they have become scapegoats for the many botched projects executed under their responsibility. They just carried out orders, so no one was disciplined for the ‘foul-ups’. The NDIA did not accede to requests for permission to visit HCP sites. However, I have in my possession aerial coverage of the project which was taken on December 14. These photos clearly indicate the tremendous amount of work yet to be done to make HCP operational, and there was no way these could have been completed before the December 31 deadline which the public was so confidently assured by Minister Ramsammy during his partial site visit on December 19. Hence another reset. The Hope Canal Project was the brainchild of former President Jagdeo and Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud. The Project was illconceived and hurriedly put together without any feasibility study. Design flaws and other factors slowed construction progress resulting in its completion suffering endless postponements. Once again Minister Ramsammy will have to set another completion deadline when the HCP will be finally operational to safely release flood water from EDWC into the Atlantic Ocean in volumes consistent with its design parameters. Charles Sohan
From page 5 replace the firewood currently used at Guysuco to power their boilers. The demonstration was conducted at Enmore Estate, and all the data from this demonstration are available to any member of the public on request. In summary, compared to an equivalent weight of firewood, the briquettes developed a higher pressure of steam in a shorter amount of time, and sustained this higher pressure of steam for a period twice as long as the equivalent weight of firewood. Then again in 2014, on the 12th September, the IAST in collaboration with Guysuco’s personnel led by Mr Dwarka Sharma, (then) Factory Operations Manager and Mr. Curbette Victorine, Executive Manager of Uitvlugt Estate, conducted another conclusive demonstration of the feasibility of this approach. In this test, the bagasse used was from Albion Estate, and had been disposed by the estate operations as waste – it was lying in the open for a number of years and had become a threat due to self-ignition and other attendant environmental issues. We were able to demonstrate, using a very carefully designed comparison of firewood and bagasse briquettes, that the briquettes outperformed an equivalent weight of firewood, using two identical boilers and all other identical conditions. A report was compiled, which recommended to Guysuco’s management that it acquire larger-scale equipment for its own use in utilizing its waste bagasse. The
entire report is available to members of the public on request. The corporation generates a significant amount of bagasse; in 2011 it generated 1,190,667 tonnes, in 2012, 1,025,439 tonnes and in 2013, 898,406 tonnes. I do not have the final numbers for 2014 as yet. Other than for Skeldon estate, where bagasse is used in the co-generation plant, bagasse at the other estates is used without any compaction to augment the firewood used as the main fuel source. This is a very inefficient way of burning the bagasse as the surface area to volume ratio of the “loose” bagasse is very high, resulting in inefficient capture of the calorific value of the material as it is introduced into the furnace. In addition, many estates such as Albion will generate excess bagasse which goes to waste, whilst other estates like Uitvlugt typically run out of bagasse. The adaptation of this technology will allow the bagasse to be utilized more efficiently, and will allow excess bagasse from some estates to be transferred inexpensively to those without bagasse. Using this approach, Guysuco can completely eradicate its dependence on costly fire-
wood and, in so doing, curtail its contribution to deforestation. Furthermore, this approach, based on a business plan developed by Guysuco using the data from the IAST tests, suggests that the corporation can significantly cut yearly operational costs by multiple tens of millions. The implementation and ongoing management of the project is now under the control of Guysuco’s engineers, with the IAST playing a supporting role in helping to scrutinize the technical merits of equipment being procured and the process of modifying the equipment so as to make mobile units. I retain no ability to comment on the subsequent implementation and ongoing management of the project, as this is now entirely under the control of Guysuco. Should Mr. Vieira or any other member of the public like to see a video of the briquettes being made at Albion Estate or the head to head comparison tests done at Uitvlugt, or a copy of any of the reports mentioned, please contact the Confidential Secretary, IAST, at +592 222 4214. Former National Security Minister drowns at Tobago beach Tobago Monday January 5- CMC- Former National Security Minister Martin Joseph drowned Monday while swimming at a Tobago beach, police have confirmed. However the police said they were not releasing any details as yet regarding the death of Joseph, who served as cabinet minister in the Patrick Manning government from 2001. “I just got information that the body has been recovered and in fact it is the case he has indeed drowned earlier this morning and of course everybody is in shock and traumatized,” said the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Orville London. London, a deputy leader of the main opposition People’s National
Former National Security Minister, Martin Joseph Movement (PNM) speaking on radio, said that Joseph, who served as parliamentary representative for the St.
Ann’s East Constituency from 1995-2002 and was appointed Minister of National Security in November 2003, was holidaying with a friend and was not in Tobago on party business. Joseph, who held a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, in the United States, also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Regional Science: Minor in Economics from the George Washington University, Washington D.C. and held an Associate Degree in Marine Sciences, University of the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. US monitoring former Iranian national with St Kitts-Nevis passport WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Monday January 5, 2014, CMC – The United States Department of Treasury says it is following closely the activities of a former Iranian national, who now holds St KittsNevis passport and was “responsible for converting foreign currency into US bank notes”. The Treasury Department said that Hossein Zeidi, 49, is among nine individuals and entities under various Iran-related authorities under surveillance for their “support of Iranian government sanctions evasion efforts and human rights-related abusers, including those engaged in censorship”. It said that Heidi holds a St. Kitts and Nevis passport, number RE0003553 and he carries the alias Hosein Zeidi and Hossein Mansour Zeidi. He has a United Arab Emirate (UAE)
national identification number 444169. The US Treasury Department gave no details as to how Zeidi had in his possession a St. Kitts-Nevis passport, but the twin island Federation provides citizenship to foreigners who provide significant investments to the island. The Treasury Department said Zeidi was “responsible for converting foreign currency into US bank notes. “The Iranian government contracted with Zeidi and Seyed Kamal Yasini to convert Iranian funds denominated in non-Iranian local currency into US dollars,” the Treasury Department said. “To date, these individuals and their network have effected the delivery of hundreds of millions of dollars in US dollar bank notes to the Iranian government in violation of E.O. 13622,” it added.
Haiti health officials deny reports of first Ebola case Port –Au –Prince, Haiti January 4, 2015, CMC – Health officials have dismissed reports that the first case of Ebola has been detected in the country. On Saturday, Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, Minister of Public Health, told the Haitian Caribbean News Network that the reports of Ebola being detected in the vicinity of Petite Riviere de l’Artibonite, in the northern region of the country are “totally false”. “There are ill-intentioned people spreading such rumors,” stated Guillaume who is also acting Prime Minister. According to Guillaume, the depoliticization of the health sector is “an
Florence D. Guillaume, Minister of Public Health essential principle for the restoration of trust and confidence in the response to provide to individuals who require care and services for prevention, maintaining or the restoration of their health
in case of illness.” The Ministry of Health has called on the population “to remain calm and to respect all disclosed prevention regulations while making the duty, if any were needed, to reassure everyone of the effectiveness of the vigilance system in place to reduce significantly the risk of contamination of our country.” Ebola is an infectious and generally fatal disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding, spread through contact with infected body fluids. There is no known cure for the Ebola virus which has killed more than 7,000 people mainly in West Africa.

Britain says has strengthened Ebola screening after first case
A convoy carrying a female Ebola patient arrives at the Royal Free Hospital (Reuters) - Britain has tightened steps for dealing with possible Ebola patients, its health minister said on Monday, after screening at London’s Heathrow airport failed to detect the disease in a nurse who is now critically ill. Over the past year, the world’s worst ever outbreak of Ebola, a highly infectious haemorrhagic fever, has killed over 7,900 people, with more than 20,000 cases recorded mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The virus is still spreading in West Africa, especially in Sierra Leone. A week ago, 39-year-old Pauline Cafferkey, who had been working in West Africa with the charity Save the Children, became the first person to be diagnosed with the disease in Britain. She had flown from Sierra Leone to Scotland via Morocco and London and was screened for a high temperature with other returning health workers at Heathrow but showed no signs of fever. When she requested further screening, six subsequent
checks were within normal levels and she continued her journey. Britain began screening passengers from West Africa for symptoms of Ebola in October. “We have ... strengthened our guidance to ensure that anyone from a high-risk group who feels unwell will be reassessed, advice will be immediately sought from an infectious diseases specialist and the passenger will be referred for testing if appropriate,” Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt told parliament, saying the new procedures had been in place since Dec. 29. “Even if someone isn’t displaying symptoms but says they are feeling a bit under the weather, then we would isolate them if they are in the high-risk category,” Hunt said. On Saturday the hospital treating Cafferkey said she had deteriorated and was now in a critical condition. Hunt said that while she remained critical, her condition had stabilized
Equities slump, led by energy as oil hits five-and-a-half-year lows (Reuters) - Equity markets worldwide tumbled on Monday, led by commoditylinked shares as oil prices fell to 5-1/2-year lows and investors fled to the safety of government bonds. Brent and U.S. crude oil prices dropped to their lowest levels since spring 2009, hit by a global supply glut and lackluster demand. Strength in the U.S. dollar, which touched a near nine-year high against the euro on the EBS platform,
weighed on dollardenominated commodities. Russia’s oil output hit a post-Soviet high last year, while Iraq’s oil exports in December were the highest since 1980. Brent crude for February fell to as low as $52.66 per barrel before settling down $3.31 at $53.11 a barrel. U.S. crude dipped to a low of $49.68 per barrel and settled down $2.65 at $50.04 a barrel. In the U.S. stock market, the S&P 500 energy
sector closed down 4 percent, extending a decline of almost 20 percent recorded over the last two quarters of 2014. In Europe, oil and gas and basic resources indexes closed down 4.9 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively. Both the Dow and S&P 500 suffered their biggest one-day declines in about three months, and all 10 S&P 500 sectors fell. “We were at this elevated high at the end of December, adding to the impetus for the decline on top of worldwide growth concerns and what’s going on in energy,” said Stephen Massocca, chief investment officer of Wedbush Equity Management LLC in San Francisco. Political uncertainty in Greece, which has renewed fears of a Greek exit from the euro zone, also rattled European stocks ahead of the country’s elections later this month. The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, hit a nine-year high of 91.775 and was last up 0.35 percent at 91.396.

Top players still unsure about best route to Australian Open BRISBANE (Reuters) Plotting a path to the Australian Open has never been trickier or more uncertain. Even the best players are baffled about the best way to prepare for their annual trek Down Under. In a sport where players analyze every tiny detail in the hope of finding an edge and rigidly stick to tried and tested routes to the other three grand slams, the world’s best cannot agree on the right road to winning the Australian Open. Even past champions are not sure which way to go, spreading themselves as far apart as the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent, China, Australia and New Zealand. Some have opted to play only singles, some have added doubles. Some are playing mixed team events, some are playing exhibitions. Some are playing multiple warm-up events, others none at all. Novak Djokovic has won four of the last seven Australian Opens but even the Serbian cannot decide on the best place to play.
For three of his wins, he warmed up at the Hopman Cup in Perth and for the other he did not play at all. This year he is playing the Qatar Open, along with Rafa Nadal. For Nadal, the Qatar Open could be a good omen as he used that as his warm-up event before he won his only Australian Open title in 2009. Roger Federer also played at the Qatar Open before he won the Australian Open in 2006 and 2010. But in 2007 he won the Australian Open without playing any warm-up and when he won the Qatar Open in 2005 and 2011, he did not win the Australian Open later that month. This year Federer is playing the Brisbane International in subtropical Queensland, along with Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka. The Brisbane International is a relatively new event, having started in 2009, and attracts strong fields, but none of the winners so far has gone on and won the Australian Open the same year. Stanislas Wawrinka, last year’s surprise men’s champion, warned up by winning the Chennai Open, and the
Swiss is back defending his title in India this week, hoping that if it worked once it might work again. Li Na won last year’s women’s singles title after warming up in Shenzhen, adding more uncertainty to the best route to take. Li has since retired but Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep are all heading to China hoping for similar luck as they chase their first Australian Open titles. The Sydney International has been the most reliable formguide for the women’s title at Melbourne, with four of the last 10 Australian Open winners playing it. Serena Williams used Sydney as her final preparation for two of the five Australian Opens she won. But she also won it twice without playing any warmups, and another time when she went to Hobart and lost early. This year, she’s playing the Hopman Cup, along with Andy Murray, who is hoping the mixed team event could be the tonic for him to win his first Australian Open.

Cowboys rally behind Romo to eliminate Lions (Reuters) - Tony Romo engineered a stirring secondhalf comeback to lead the Dallas Cowboys to a nail-biting 24-20 NFC wildcard win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday and a trip back to the divisional round to meet the Green Bay Packers. With a postseason record of 1-3 and haunted by a reputation as a big-game flop, Romo withstood a ferocious Lions defence, tossing a pair of touchdown passes to Terrance Williams, including an eight-yard strike with 2:32 to remaining to give Dallas their first playoff win since the 2009 season. “You just have to stay in the moment and understand the game, it doesn’t end after the first quarter or second quarter, it’s a long way to go,” said Romo. “It wasn’t going well...you just have to stay calm, I’ve played enough games to understand that. I think I didn’t do that as well when I was younger.” After an 11-5 regular season it was more postseason disappointment for the Lions, who have not won a playoff game since January 1992, losing seven wildcard contests. Romo, sacked six times by Detroit’s top ranked defence, would not be kept down, completing 19 of 31 passes for 293 yards while DeMarco Murray, the NFL’s leading rusher, ran for 75 yards and a touchdown. The Lions shocked the home crowd at a packed AT&T Stadium, scoring on their first possession when Matthew Stafford hit Golden Tate with a 51-yard touchdown pass, then followed up with a 14-play, 99yard drive capped by Reggie Bush scampering into the end zone for a 14-0 lead. Kept in check by a swarming Detroit defence, the Cowboys finally got the big-play lift they needed when Romo hooked up with Williams with a 76-yard touchdown strike with less than two minutes remaining in the half but the Lions would answer back with 39-yard Matt Prater field goal to take a 17-7 advantage into the intermission. Stafford was intercepted by Kyle Wilber on the Detroit 19 in the third quarter but Dallas could not convert the turnover when Dan Bailey missed on a 41-yard field goal attempt. Having dodged a bullet, the Lions answered immediately with a 37-yard Prater field goal but the Cowboys would not throw in the towel. Trailing 20-7, Dallas turned to their top guns and another big play, Romo finding Dez Bryant for a 43-yard

Murray sizzles in Williamson, Watling stretch lead past 100 scorching Perth New Zealand v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Wellington, 3rd day
ESPNcricinfo - In the previous Test played at Basin Reserve, a 352-run stand between Brendon McCullum and BJ Watling had turned the tables on India. Kumar Sangakkara and Dinesh Chandimal added 130 in this Test, a momentum-changing partnership that lifted Sri Lanka from a precarious position in their first innings. The two stands had been different in size, but similar in impact. Call it a new love affair between the sixth-wicket pairs and this ground, or dependability of No. 7s, but another stand could play a decisive role in the match. New Zealand were tottering on 159 for 5, with a slender lead of 24, when BJ Watling joined Kane Williamson. In the first innings, the New Zealand lower order had succumbed tamely and with the Sri Lanka bowlers working well as a group, a repeat appeared likely. Watling did not do much to change that outlook as he picked three boundaries through gully early in his innings. But by the end of the day, he had added an obdurate 94 in 40.3 overs with Williamson, slowly building the lead past 100 to leave scope for drama later in the game. Sri Lanka were wicketless in the last session, but on a pitch with a reputation of getting more batsmen friendly with time, they would still have their sights on a seriesequalising win. Their seamers had bowled with discipline throughout the day, while Rangana Herath maintained the stranglehold. Nuwan Pradeep struck twice in two overs to remove both New Zealand openers after a solid stand had whittled the deficit to 60 runs, and added another to his tally - James Neesham - late in the
second session. There were no easy deliveries as Sri Lanka barged into the engine room of New Zealand’s batting Williamson and Brendon McCullum - just before lunch. The two batsmen were watchful during a 43-run stand but managed to take toll of the odd loose delivery. However, a Dhammika Prasad delivery in the 47th over caught McCullum plumb in front, leaving Williamson with the job of marshalling the rest of the innings. Williamson was solid in defence but used his feet well from time to time to provide a release from Herath’s grip. After McCullum’s departure, he added 37 with Neesham to help New Zealand take the lead in the 51st over. He did provide a couple of chances: Herath could not hold on to a difficult return chance when the batsman was on 29, while Pradeep dropped a sitter when he was on 60, a couple of overs before the new ball was taken. For a batsman who has grown in stature over the last couple of seasons, those could prove to be two chances too many.
At the age 24, the completeness in Williamson’s batting can be scary for bowlers. Still, today was not the day to dazzle, and so he buckled up and accumulated runs with deft touches. His half-century came off 117 deliveries and had only four hits to the boundary. By the end of the day, he had played 200 deliveries for an unbeaten 80 and had averted the threat of the new ball. The plan was to play a tight game, but he did play a delectable on-drive against the new ball as Pradeep went too straight. Sri Lanka had to be patient, just like they had been in the morning. Hamish Rutherford and Tom Latham added 75 for the first wicket - their first 50-plus stand - but New Zealand lost three wickets for four runs after Rutherford walked into a trap. In the 27th over, Mathews removed a fielder from the slip cordon and placed him at a fine third-man position, in addition to a regular third man, and waited for a mistake. Pradeep, a bit quicker than the other two seamers, cramped the batsman by go-
ing round the stumps and surprised him with a couple of quick bouncers. The third delivery was short too, but just wide enough to lure the batsman into a cut. Rutherford obliged and the thick edge carried straight to Dinesh Chandimal at the fine third man, sparking loud celebrations from the Sri Lanka fielders who knew the plan had worked to perfection. In Pradeep’s next over Latham, who had been more solid of the two openers, attempted his first expansive shot - a drive at an angling delivery - and immediately paid the price, edging it to the keeper. As two new batsmen arrived at the crease, Pradeep and Herath ensured there were no easy runs. The sudden stop in scoring brought another wicket, this time to an excellent delivery from Herath. Taylor was beaten in flight as he pushed forward with his hands, only to see the ball turn just enough past the outside edge and graze the outside of off stump. From 75 for 0, New Zealand were 79 for 3. Rutherford had been lucky in the second over of the morning. In trying to leave a back of length delivery from Prasad, he was unable to get the glove out of the way and edged it to the keeper. However, the umpire Steve Davis had called a frontfoot no-ball immediately even though replays suggested Prasad had some part of his heel behind the line. Rutherford cut and drove through off to pick up four more boundaries and it appeared his long wait - 15 innings - for his second half-century was coming to an end. But, he fell after getting yet another start. Scores: New Zealand 221 and 253 for 5 (Williamson 80*) lead Sri Lanka 356 by 118 runs.
From page 21 single session of 53 overs or three-and-a-half hours - with, of course, the potential for an extra half hour if they did not bowl their overs fast enough. Statisticians mulled over whether this must be the longest session in Test history and share prices for Ceylon Tea fell on the Colombo exchange. There was not the merest hint that South Africa’s bowlers felt the need to pace themselves. The longest session depended entirely on West Indies’ ability to survive it. At 88 for 2 at start of play, they were only four runs be-
hind and had played gamely in this Test, but few imagined they might carry it through to something substantial. That suspicion deepened with the departure of Leon Johnson in the third over of the day. Two aerial drives against Steyn, the first whizzing over Hashim Amla at first slip, took West Indies into the lead, but Morkel unpinned him with a rising delivery around off stump. Samuels and Chanderpaul are the oddest couple at the crease. One dances; one sits back and observes. One is forever vulnerable to conceit; one measures risk by a single grain.
Samuels was eager to dismiss Harmer from his presence; Chanderpaul watched every ball intently, as if slow turn was really fast turn, leaping from the cracks, his caution encouraged when Harmer found a thin edge and AB de Villiers dropped an inviting chance. Still at three down, it was possible to imagine that Chanderpaul’s reprieve might be costly. But the rush of wickets following Samuels’ dismissal soon revealed a familiar truth. Harmer’s agony was shelved as Holder clipped him carelessly to short midwicket and, two balls later, Taylor’s ungodly wind-
up plopped into the hands of deep midwicket. When Steyn picked off Benn, all that was left was for West Indies to complete their innings in a manner that summed up the disarray of the previous hour. This they duly achieved as Chanderpaul and Shannon Gabriel were lost in confusion in midwicket, leaving Bavuma’s direct hit from backward point to end proceedings. Scores: South Africa 421 and 9 for 1 need a further 115 to beat West Indies 329 and 215 (Samuels 74, Chanderpaul 50, Harmer 482, Steyn 3-75).

Andy Murray of Britain reacts after losing a point during his men’s singles tennis match against Benoit Paire of France at the 2015 Hopman Cup in Perth January 5, 2015. REUTERS/Stringer (Reuters) - Andy Murray continued his strong buildup in his quest for a maiden Australian Open title with a comfortable victory over Frenchman Benoit Paire in the Hopman Cup mixed-team event in Perth on Monday. Fresh from his first title of 2015 in Abu Dhabi, the Scot, representing Britain at the event alongside Heather Watson, defeated Paire 6-2 75 in the evening match. The 27-year-old arrived in sweltering Perth on Sunday after a walkover against an ailing Novak Djokovic in the Abu Dhabi final but showed no signs of rust despite the stark difference in conditions. “It was a bit of an eyeopener when we arrived at the practice court this morning and it was 44 degrees (Celsius) outside,” Murray, who also beat Rafa Nadal and Feliciano Lopez in Abu Dhabi, said with a grin in a courtside interview. “I’m from a small town in Scotland and the weather is
not quite like that there. The conditions here are fantastic to get ready for Melbourne.” After breezing through the first set, the world number six was put under pressure by his French opponent in the second and had to fight hard to hold his serve in a marathon eighth game during which his left shoulder started hurting. Murray had to wait till the 11th game for the decisive break and completed the win on his second match point with a booming ace. “I had the (shoulder) problem in Abu Dhabi couple of days ago and haven’t had much time to serve after that. We flew straight from there and arrived yesterday,” Murray said. “It doesn’t really make sense for a right-handed player to have a problem with their left arm. So I am not sure exactly what it was and I had a scan in Abu Dhabi and that was all clear. “But it’s still a little bit sore today.”

Azarenka loses Harmer, Steyn blow West Indies away comeback match at Brisbane International BRISBANE (Reuters) The decibel readings were not needed for Victoria Azarenka on Monday as the groans from the crowd at the Brisbane International almost drowned out her trademark shrieks. Still struggling to get back to her best, the former world number one was beaten 4-6 7-6(7) 6-4 in the first round by Czech Karolina Pliskova. The crowd at the Pat Rafter Arena, aware of the injuries and personal problems the Belarussian has endured over the past year, urged her on but their vocal backing was not enough. Azarenka was the architect of her own defeat. She failed to convert two match points in the second set and made nine double faults and 44 unforced errors in a match that lasted 3-1/4 hours. At 25, time is still on Azarenka’s side and there were enough positive signs to show she can get back toward the top but the road to a full recovery looks likely to be a slow one. A year ago, Azarenka arrived Down Under hoping to successfully defend the Australian Open title she won in 2012 and 2013 but bowed out in the quarter-
finals. She suffered a foot injury that saw her miss most of the first six months of the year and then had a knee problem. Azarenka finally abandoned the season in September after playing just 24 matches all year and not winning a title. She plummeted down the rankings and split up with her boyfriend Stefan Gordy, better known as Redfoo, one half of LMFAO, the U.S. pop duo behind the hit single “I’m Sexy and I Know It”. Azarenka started the Brisbane International ranked 42nd in the world but not without hope. She is healthy again, physically a n d e m o t i o n a l l y, a n d determined to get back to where she was. Monday’s match was her first since September and Pliskova was a difficult and dangerous first-round opponent, ranked 23rd in the world after winning two WTA title last year. For a while it looked like old times for Azarenka. She jumped out to a 5-1 led in the opening set before the first signs of trouble came. Pliskova reeled off the next three and although Azarenka took the set, she squandered her chances in the second before running out of puff in the decider.

ESPNcricinfo - South Africa were left needing 124 to win the third Test at Newlands and take the series 2-0 after a monumental West Indies collapse on the fourth day. West Indies’ last seven wickets tumbled for only 33 runs in 15 overs as not for the first time in the series they were blown aside. The ball before Marlon Samuels self-destructed to cries of condemnation from all quarters West Indies seemed to be making a fist of it. Samuels and Shiv Chanderpaul put up prolonged resistance in a fourth-wicket stand of 87 in 28 overs, which was enough to take them into a lead of 90, but once Samuels perished attempting to strike Simon Harmer straight for six, it all became very messy. West Indies did at least take an unexpected wicket in
the three overs remaining. If they were disorientated with the bat, that seemed nothing compared to their bizarre tactics in the field as 2.3 overs were shared by Jerome Taylor, Samuels of all people, and a second spinner, Sulieman Benn. Benn’s third delivery, though, a quicker arm ball, left Alviro Petersen transfixed. Comprehensively bowled for 0, his Test career remained as troubled at the end of the series as it had been at the start. It would be easy to condemn Samuels for the manner of his departure as he holed out to straight long-on, with Dean Elgar, one of several boundary outriders, making good ground to take the catch. “Arrogant”, “brainless” and “inexcusable” were just three words on commentators’ lips. In his
defence, it was exactly the sort of shot that had first indicated West Indian defiance. If he had broken Harmer, the sole spinner, he might have exposed South Africa in a single session that had the potential to extend for up to four hours. Harmer, though, is not easily broken. He has had an excellent debut Test, taking seven wickets in the match and going at three runs per over. He has shown enough attacking potential, too, to suggest that he might prove himself a more adaptable spin bowler than some who have answered the Proteas’ needs. Dale Steyn was deadly once the ball started to reverse, his pace unnerving, his accuracy immaculate and his eyes so dead they might have won the part of the oldest character in the
Twilight fantasy series. He bowled Jermaine Blackwood with a wicked outswinger to follow a couple of inswingers and was on a hat-trick after picking up Denesh Ramdin first ball, Ramdin finding Harmer in front of square leg as he played too early. Morne Morkel’s hostility deserved a greater reward than two top-order wickets. Vernon Philander had a wicketless Newlands Test. Initially so destructive here, with 30 wickets in his first four Tests, he has managed only one in his last two appearances. The rain was teeming down in Cape Town at the scheduled start of play. When things got underway at 3pm, there was quite a shock in store, especially for the South African bowlers: a (Continued on page 20)
World Cup 2015: Ireland name unchanged squad BBC Sport - Ireland coach Phil Simmons has kept faith with the squad touring the United Arab Emirates for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The 15 players in the UAE will stay in the squad for the World Cup, which starts in February. There is no place for experienced pace bowler Max Sorensen while other absentees include all-rounder Andrew White and batsman Andrew Poynter. Ireland start their pool matches against West Indies on 16 February. The Irish will prepare for the World Cup with a training camp and tri-series in Dubai against Afghanistan and Scotland. Captain William Porterfield is one of five players who will be participating in their third World Cup, along with brothers Kevin and Niall O’Brien, Ed Joyce and John Mooney. At the other end of the spectrum, it will be the first time at a World Cup for six of the squad with Andrew Balbirnie, Peter Chase, Andrew McBrine, Tim Murtagh, Stuart Thompson, and Craig Young making their tournament debuts. “It’s fantastic to be leading Ireland in another global tournament,” said Porterfield. “We’ve produced some wonderful performances over the years in World Cups, and there’s no reason why we

can’t claim further successes in Australia and New Zealand. “There’s a great mix as always in the squad, and the younger guys coming through are all hungry which keeps the more experienced players on their toes. Competition for places has been fierce and that’s got to be good for Irish cricket.” Ireland have opted not to name any replacements yet, but Simmons did reveal they had taken five bowlers with the squad to Dubai to help with their preparations. “Max Sorensen, Graeme McCarter, Eddie Richardson, Tyrone Kane and Barry McCarthy will all bowl in the nets and will provide a great resource in our build-up,” he said. “It’s our intention to have some additional players based in Australia to provide cover for the World Cup squad, and we’ll finalise
those arrangements in the coming weeks.” Ireland play four ODIs in the UAE, and following a short return home, depart for Australia at the end of January for a training camp and fixture against Sydneybased club Randwick Petersham. The Irish stay in Sydney for official warm-up matches against Scotland and Bangladesh before flying to New Zealand for their World Cup opener in Hamilton. GABBFF LOOKING TOWARDS ANOTHER 2014 WAS GOOD PUMPED UP YEAR: Godfrey Stoby
Shawnell Warner

W
hile it is regarded as one of the small sports in Guyana, it is a sport that every other sportsman and woman enjoy a little of since training of the muscles is vital to when it comes to keeping in shape and on top of your game. The Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) signed off 2014 as another successful year having fulfilled its mandate locally, competition wise and were also able to have representatives at a number of competitions overseas. GABBFF President Keavon Bess summed up 2014 as successful for the federation. The federation executive started 2014 by reaching out to its many gyms to bring them up to speed with its plans and programmes for the year and to also hear from gym members their views on the way forward for the sport Novices, which sees rookie competitors, was hosted on March 1st and Sylvester Andrews who has since been a fierce competitor among the senior athletes, outmuscled his rivals to emerge as the Overall Novices champion. This was followed by the biannual Hugh Ross Classic competition on March 29, sanctioned by the GABBFF. Kerwyn Clarke staved off
stiff competition to be crowned Mr. Hugh Ross Classic. The federation and athletes next turned its attention to the body’s marquee event, the senior championships where the big boys and girls meet in an event sponsored by Fitness Express. To a sold out audience at the Theatre Guild, Kingston, Kerwyn Clarke once again got the nod of the judges and was crowned Mr. Guyana to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is the number one bodybuilder in Guyana. Based on performances at this event, the GABBFF set out to select its team for the Central American and Caribbean championships in Saint Martin in October. While the federation selected a number of athletes, the high cost of travel and visa restrictions resulted in the team being cut to just three locally based athletes. CAC is the marquee event for Caribbean athletes and Guyana has been holding its own at this level especially in the lighter categories. Bess noted that CAC was of high quality and the athletes were of a super pedigree but Guyana was able, through the heroics of Devon Davis to capture the gold medal in the Flyweight category for the third consecutive year. ”Davis’ achievement at
CAC no doubt has been our high point for the year 2014. He has etched his name in the history books as one of the best in Guyana achieving a similar feat to Sylvan Gardner, another of our greats.” Next up for the GABBFF was the selection of its team for the annual D a r c y B e c k l e s championships in the Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados. Whilst the Guyanese athletes were competitive they were unable to capture any medals. ”This could be regarded as a low point for us but a stepping stone for many athletes who tasted the international stage for the first time,” Bess noted. The year came to a glowing end with the staging of another private competition sanctioned by the GABBFF, Flex Night International. This event saw overseas athletes from Suriname (male & female) gracing the Cultural Stage in what was the largest amount of competitors seen onstage in G u y a n a . D e s p i t e M r. Guyana Kerwyn Clarke not being on stage, the competition was fierce. Emerging as the Overall winner and taking the biggest title of his fledgling career was Godfrey Stoby crowned Mr. Flex Night 2014. 2015 AND BEYOND President Bess shared that
the GABBFF has commenced preparations of legal documents for the purposes of Incorporating the GABBFF. The National Sports Commission (NSC) according to Bess has indicated that before any athlete’s application can be accepted for consideration for Sports Awards the umbrella association or federation must be registered and its fiscal year audited. ”For this reason the GABBFF was unable to host its year-end awards ceremony as was initially planned because of more important expenditures. Most importantly, with three consecutive gold medals at an international competition, the GABBFF sees it better suited to put our house in place so as to afford Mr. Devon Davis an opportunity to win Sportsman of the Year Award.” Bess also noted that the involvement of more women in the sport has always been a top priority for the federation and they are hopeful that with the Gym craze that is currently occurring that more females see fitness and fitness competitions as a benefit to their daily lives a n d p e r s o n a l accomplishments. ”Miss Shawnell Warner has proven to be a fine female athlete and with the correct management she can do well on the regional and
international stages in bikini a n d w o m e n ’s f i t n e s s competitions. The GABBFF will continue to seek out other female athletes for its local and overseas competitions.” Bess offered gratitude to the many sponsors who have continued to show faith in them as well as the many athletes they have supported t h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r.
”We would like to recognize them all, even the many individuals who have contributed in their own small way. The many gyms that have seen it fit to ensure their athletes compete, to all we say thank you. With all necessary in house works completed we can all expect an even better year for bodybuilding and fitness sports in Guyana in 2015.”
Guyanese dominate Bigi Broki Waka 5k, 10k races in Suriname Guyanese distance athletes dominated the twelfth edition of the Bigi Broki Waka 10km and 5km races over the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge Sunday morning, digging deep to turn in some credible performances in the tough terrain owed to the rain. Cleveland Forde won the 10km race in 34:15 ahead of countryman, Cleveland Thomas, who was second and Surinamese athlete Steven Vismale, who finished third. Forde’s relatively slow time, which was two minutes off his usual pace, was reflective of the difficult course. Guyana was on podium again when Lionel D’Andrade stormed to victory in the 5km race with a time of 17:07 ahead of Surinamese athletes, Aloeboetoe Gilberto (17:24), and Vorswijk Rochini (17:39) respectively. D’Andrade told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the course was challenging to navigate despite his emphatic 17-second victory. In the female race, Guyanese Alika Morgan dominated the 10km event in 41:45 with Guyanese compatriot, Andrea Foster finishing second. Suriname’s Caroline Marlet finished third. Kaieteur Sport understands that despite the rain, the athletes completed their respective races without significant incidents. VIDEO, the Foundation that organised the event, aims to raise awareness for the whole year with healthy exercise. This year’s Bigi Broki Waka started at 7:15am with 5,500 people in total participating in the walk/jog, 5km and 10km activities in the increasingly popular event despite constant rain. In recent years the rain started following the event.

However, any other team wishing to participate can still do so by contacting Mr Carl Moore on telephone number 614-8364.
BCB recently elected president Anil Beharry and his executive, urged representatives of the teams to get the young males and females involved in meaningful activities. The board has recognized the importance of playing the game in the villages and call on other village elders and leaders to take control of their villages. Beharry promised that his executive will play their part but they can’t do it alone. He also said that as he promised, he wants cricket to be played at all levels and families must be part of it as well. He reiterated that this lovely game of cricket must only bring people together and not to divide. First Vice President, Dhirendranauth Somwaru echoed his president sentiments and added that there is a new trend in the villages these days where lots of criminals are breeding. He challenged responsible villagers to stop these kids at a young age. He added that if we create monsters, then we may not be able to stop them. Third Vice President Vemen Walters thanked the sponsor and said that this is a good tournament for the village teams. He said that first division clubs and the board selectors can use it for talent spotting and feed from it. Other members of the board and representatives of the teams were high in praise for Mr Mohamed Raffik for his renewal of the sponsorship.

Barnwell to lead Jaguars By Sean Devers The Guyana Jaguars 14man squad for the 2015 NAGICO Super50 in Trinidad and Tobago was named yesterday and as widely expected DCC seam bowling all-rounder Chris Barnwell has retained his position of One-Day Captain. Former 50-over Skipper Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul from Albion is Barnwell’s deputy in a side that is missing several of their senior players from last year due to various reasons. Two competitions runs from January 15-25 and the Jaguars, playing in Zone ‘B’, come up against Windward Islands Volcanoes (Jan 15), Barbados Pride (Jan 17) and CCC (Jan 19) in their three preliminary round games in three Day/Night matches which commence at 13:30hrs at the Queens Park Oval. Guyana will field a depleted side since Narsingh Deonarine and Leon Johnson are unavailable because of their West Indies 50-over commitments in South Africa, Assad Fudadin is out with a broken finger sustained during a fielding drill in South Africa, Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, who played in last year’s tournament was not selected by the Jaguars, while the West Indies under-19 pair of Shemron Hetmyer and Taignarine Chanderpaul were not considered since are a part of the West Indies under-19 side which will compete in Zone ‘B’ of the NAGICO tournament. Four players in the side have ODI experience while
Four players with ODI experience included the Jaguars’ Four-Day Captain Vishaul Singh is also included in the One-Day unit. Forty-year-old Everest left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul, with 12 tons in his 398 List ‘A’ matches is the most experienced player in the entire tournament and one of three Test players in the Jaguars team. The other players with Test experience are Albion spin twins Devendra Bishoo and Permaul, while Rose Hall Town’s 31-year old batsman Royston Crandon played his only ODI game in South Africa. The 27-year-old Barnwell, who played six t20 Internationals for the West Indies is the only other player in the side with Windies senior team experience although Essequibo pacer Ronsford Beaton who represents city club GCC, has played in the West Indies ‘A’ team. The solid but often times slow scoring Chanderpaul, who is no longer considered for ODI cricket, could be used as Opener and the others bat around him, especially since four senior batsmen are missing from the line-up. At 23, Trevon Griffith, the attacking DCC left-hander, gets another chance to get a big score at the Regional level, while Rajendra Chandrika has looked enterprising in the Four-Day format and could play a key role at the top of the order for the Jaguars. Anthony Bramble, who could also open the batting if required, is the Wi c k e t k e e p e r, w h i l e Jonathon Foo seems to have
Christopher Barnwell matured tremendously since struggling against the short ball for Guyana in South Africa and has also been selected. Barbadian left-arm seam bowling all-rounder Raymond Reifer, Barnwell and swing bowler Paul Wintz are support staff for the genuinely quick Beaton, while Steven Jacobs, who led the CCC last year, is a batting all-rounder and could provide spin support to Bishoo and Permaul. The Jaguars will play two practice matches tomorrow and Friday before they wing out for Trinidad on January 13. Guyana Jaguars squad: Christopher Barnwell (captain), Veerasammy Permaul (v-captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Trevon Griffith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Vishaul Singh, Raymon Reifer, Anthony Bramble, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz, Steven Jacobs, Royston Crandon, Jonathan Foo. Coach: Esuan Crandon, Assistant Coach: Rayon Griffith.
GCA ENJOYED A FRUITFUL 2014
D
espite a number of challenges the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) enjoyed a fruitful 2014. The association staged tournaments for players at all levels where a number of talents were unearthed. The Hadi’s World City Mall Inc first division two-day, the New Building Society second division 40-over and the Banks Malta Supreme U-13 competitions are in their latter stages and will be completed in 2015, however the Brain Street U-15 and the Noble House Sea Foods second division two-day tournaments were completed. The U-15 competition saw new talent; a number of players went on to represent the victorious Guyana team in the regional tournament in Jamaica. It is evident that these players posses the ability to reach greater heights- a fact that is
recognized by the clubs which wasted little time in giving these players a chance at higher levels. Guyana National Industrial Sports Club (GNIC) won the league category of this competition, but Transport SC (TSC) took the Cup segment- they defeated GNIC in an exciting final. Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) overcame Everest in the final on first innings of the Noble House Sea Foods second division twoday competition which was played in two zones. Javed Rasheed of Everest and Tevin Imlach (DCC) were the MVPs, Khemraj Ramdeen (Everest) and Imlach took the prizes for being the highest run scorers, while Rasheed was the leading wicket taker. Gandhi Youth Organisation are leading the points table in the U-13 competition, followed FLASHBACK!
