Welcome We exist because of our members. You are who we serve and why we are here. Your ongoing support is something we never take for granted. Your membership contribution is the working capital that keeps us going and it expresses your confidence in the value we provide.

2015 was an incredible year of collaboration and progress for the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

It is thrilling that even during difficult economic times, our membership continues to grow and people continue to get involved to make a difference. Our Chamber is strong and our positive attitude reflects our self-reliance, our optimism and our perseverance.

As we look forward, we will continue to find more ways to ensure that the Chamber continues to show further growth and prosperity. The sky is the limit for our potential, and our Chamber is committed to ensuring your organisation sees us as a vehicle to take your company to the next level.

The success of our work is, without a doubt, attributed to the active participation of our members, the dedicated leadership of our Councilors and the tireless efforts of our staff. Our valued Chamber volunteers are also an integral and vital part of our organisation.

President’s Message It is my distinct privilege to present the 2016 Annual Report of the Executive and Council of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and also,to provide an overview of the organisation’s performance during the 2015-2016 year.

This year started slowly for us as the nation and our members in particular were distracted by the effects of the prorogation of Parliament and the May 2015 general elections. Our council and membership were understandably concerned about the effect this state of affairs was having on their businesses. We were, however, undaunted and pressed on. This Chamber has faced challenges before. History shows that our level of resilience has served us in good stead many times during our 125 years of existence.

Our first order of business was a critical review of our financial position. As our members would be aware, a revision of our accounts in 2015 showed that we had experienced deficits in finance for the previous three years. While this was by no means catastrophic and our financial underpinnings were quite sound, the new executive decided that this position had to be addressed and quickly.

We critically reviewed our expenditure,surgically and methodically trimming all areas that we felt to be unnecessary and excessive. We then began to look to diversifying our revenue so as to reduce our dependence on membership fees and the Business Guyana Magazine for financial support. In short, we behaved like a private sector organisation that has a responsibility to its shareholders.

We are extremely proud of the work we have done this year in terms of membership. The Membership Committee and the Secretariat continued the practice of visiting businesses in the city. They used these opportunities to explain the mandate of the Chamber, and how it can help to further the interests of business and represent their issues at the policy and decision making levels. Their focus and level of effort in this area has resulted in 32 new members joining the Chamber this year. Our review of past records indicate that this is the highest percentage of new membership in one year, ever. This new membership also includes two international companies, Fujitsu and Price WaterhouseCoopers, whose regional offices are located in Trinidad and Tobago. The Membership Committee performed magnificently this year and deserves the highest accolades for their work.

We continued to reflect and review our 125 years of existence because technically, while the organisation was formed in 1899,we were officially constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1890. We took the opportunity to continue to study our past, review where we are now and use this

I am therefore happy to report that as a result our efforts, the Chamber’s financial performance has improved significantly.As you will see in our financial report, we have achieved a $2 million surplus which is a one hundred percent turnaround from the $2 million annual deficits that we had experienced over the previous three years. It should also be noted that as a result of the policies that we implemented, the Chamber’s financial performance should improve even more in the coming years.

as a guide to determine to how we were going to function as a business support organisation for the next 125 years.

The society and the business environment has of course shifted and evolved significantly in many different ways since then. Through it all, however, the Chamber was and continues to be a leading voice as Guyana’s economy continues to evolve, overcome challenges and provide the wherewithal for the comfort and acceptable standard of living deserved by our citizens. What has been a fascinating and very instructive exercise is to understand how the Chamber maintained its core beliefs and values during times when the environment went through such drastic changes.

We completed the compilation of the History of the Chamber. This will be presented in full in our 50th Independence Anniversary Edition of the Business Guyana Magazine, which is to be published in May. The Magazine will highlight the growth and evolution of the Chamber within the context of its relationship with the various national stakeholders throughout those years.

The overall objective, of course, was to chronicle and protect the legacy of the Chamber for its future members and leaders.

Our efforts to create synergies and partnerships with regional and international agencies received a boost when the Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Caribbean Technology Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network appointed the Chamber as their national focal point for the execution of their initiatives in Guyana. Our partnership with the Canadian Volunteer Services Organisation (CUSO) has been renewed with a new initiative this year.

Our work with the USAID SKYE programme continues with the Chamber hosting the Job Exchange to help graduates of the programme gain employment.

The Chamber continued to develop and present workshops and training programmes to further improve the capacity of our members and the private sector in general. We had a very productive partnership with the CDB and their CTCS network during the year. We first hosted a workshop on Modern Techniques for mould design and manufacturing for Ceramic pottery producers.

This was part of an initiative to strengthen the capacity of local craftspeople to better position themselves to compete regionally and further afield. Part of this training programme also included gender sensitisation sessions which aimed to help the participants to better understand the linkages between gender equality and the economic and social factors that affect the growth of the Arts and 8|

Craft Industry.

We also organised a workshop in collaboration with the Food and Drug Department for training and certification for food service managers and handlers. This was part of an initiative to improve the safety of food consumed by the public as part of an overall effort to make Guyana most marketable as a tourist destination.

Our focus on the building of a 21st century Chamber continued with the hosting of a seminar on the next generation development in Information and Communication Technology. This was done in collaboration with our international member, Fujitsu Caribbean, who highlighted a range of services offered by their international partners -Microsoft, Cisco, Check Point, Oracle and Symantec.

The Chamber also hosted the first of forums in 2016 called “Conversation Circle – Inspiring young minds for a Great Future”. The objective of this programme was to enable young entrepreneurs to benefit from the experiences of prominent business owners. These business owners, who are members of the Chamber, served as mentors by bringing their diverse perspectives and expertise on a variety of topics relating to operating a business.

I am also happy to report that the Chamber’s position as an effective counterpart agency for the execution of projects and similar initiatives was further buttressed by the signing of a $40 million grant agreement with the CDB to execute a programme to improve business competitiveness in Guyana, and strengthen small and medium enterprises to increase non-traditional exports.

This year, we collaborated extensively with our members in presenting seminars and capability building programmes to offer a practical roadmap for developing leadership skills and increasing morale and employee productivity.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the signature event that we conducted with Scotia Bank, which we called “LivePitch”. This was an initiative where the four finalists from the ScotiaBank’s business plan competition participated in a televised contest to sell or pitch their ideas and products to a panel consisting of GCCI and Scotiabank executives. The programme was streamed on social media to allow online viewers to participate in the voting process. This generated a tremendous amount of excitement locally, and the Chamber and Scotiabank are now planning to make this an annual event.

Our advocacy this year was focused on the development of an enabling environment for businesses to grow and GCCI 2015 - 2016 Annual Report

prosper. We continued to engage with agencies like the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ministry of Business on the resolution of outstanding issues regarding VAT and the application of taxes on products used for packaging and shipping. We urged the policymakers to speed up the process of telecommunication liberalisation and the modernisation of intellectual property legislation.

During the budget presentations, we were heartened to hear of the government’s commitment to addressing these issues, and we look forward to the execution of the required adjustments to current policy.

We continue to be committed to the fostering and development of entrepreneurship, especially among the youth. As I stated earlier, the Chamber signed a multiyear cooperation agreement with the Canadian volunteer organisation CUSO to deliver a range of programmes promoting entrepreneurship, innovation, start-ups and the assembling of likeminded partners to help develop the Chamber’s goal of building an incubation centre.

Our efforts to our in-house capacity continued this year.

Staff and executives attended regional workshops to gain a greater understanding of regional initiatives and action plans to improve the Caribbean business environment.

It also allowed our members to make contacts and follow up on potential collaborative opportunities for the advancement of the Chamber and it members.

I presented this overview to not only provide an overview on the work done for the year, but to also emphasize

the point that the state of the Chamber is strong and fully prepared to meet the challenge of representing our members and the private sector in general in the coming years. I am happy to state that next year, I believe that the Chamber’s executive on average will be the youngest in the history on business support organisations in Guyana.

This augurs well for the short, medium and long term future of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

This is my final year as the President of the Chamber.

It has been a distinct honour and privilege to serve you over the last two years and also, to serve in the various positions I was elected to over my almost ten years as a member.

My sincerest thanks to our corporate partners and other associates who believed in what we were doing and came on board whenever we called on them. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Chamber Secretariat for the exemplary work they have done over the years supporting the executive and council. Last but certainly not least, I wish to thank the executives for the stellar and capable support I received during the past two years. I leave with the comfort of knowing that the Chamber is in very, very capable hands as we continue to evolve as an organisation ready, even most effectively, to represent the interests of our community. My very best to the executives and please rest assured on my continued commitment and support.

• To liaise with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation (MOFTIC) on matters relating to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), European Union (EU) / African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

• To ensure that all members of the Chamber abide with required rules and regulations.

• To liaise with the Ministry of Tourism Industry & Commerce and GOINVEST on matters related to Trade & Investment locally.

• To ensure that the interest of the Chamber Members and the local Private Sector are adequately represented at the various forums.

International Corporate and Institutional Partners

Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Caribbean Technological Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network Caribbean Technological Consultancy Services (CTCS) is a network operated by the Technical Cooperation Division of Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in cooperation with regional and National institutions, laboratories, industrial enterprises consultants. CTCS contributes to strengthening private sector capabilities by linking persons who have business and technical experience with businesses requiring consulting advice and assistance.

Interventions are carried out under three (3) principal modes: • Direct Technical Assistance (facilitated by consultants) • Workshops • Job Attachments The Chamber has been supporting one of the Bank’s strategic objectives to promote broad-based economic growth, by providing support to Private Sector Development aimed at enhancing the viability of Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

This is done through the Chamber’s ground support as an executing agency to coordinate workshops.

The Chamber is currently in collaboration with the Bank to execute a one year project on “Improving Competitiveness in Guyana and Strengthening of SMEs to Increase Non-traditional Exports.”

Caribbean Expor t Development Agency (CEDA) Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) is the only Regional Export Development and Trade Promotion Agency in the Caribbean, established in 1996 by an Inter-Governmental Agreement between 15 CARIFORUM States. Its mission is to increase the competitiveness of Caribbean countries by providing quality trade and 24 |

export development and investment support services through effective programme execution and strategic alliances.

With a focus on enhancing competitiveness and promoting trade and export development within the private sector, Caribbean Export has played and continues to play a major role in regional development and integration.

Canadian Executive Service Organisation (CESO) The Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) is a Canadian not-for-profit volunteer-based development organization founded in 1967. CESO contributes to development by building capacity in governance and economic development among local clients and partners through the transfer of knowledge and skills by highly skilled Volunteer Advisors (“VAs”).

CESO bases its approach to development on the value of building and strengthening the capacity of local partners and clients. This approach is based on an assumption that specific capacity gaps can be addressed through short-term targeted assistance.

CUSO International CUSO International is a development organisation registered charity in Canada that works to reduce poverty and inequality through the efforts of highly skilled volunteers, collaborative partnerships and compassionate donors, with the vision of: “A world of engaged and empowered citizens working together to overcome poverty, and to promote equality and justice…where all people are able to realise their human rights, develop their capabilities and participate in GCCI 2015 - 2016 Annual Report

society.”

Due to our close involvement with CUSO, the Chamber has developed the ability to reach out to groups which are normally outside of our sphere of interests, and offer them quality mentorship and other valuable resources necessary for navigating the world of business. In this regard, CUSO is currently partnering with the Chamber for its VOICE Project – “Volunteers for International Cooperation and Empowerment”. CUSO’s Youth Entrepreneurship Specialist will be carrying out a feasibility study on a local Business Incubator in Georgetown. We hope to develop more outreach programs that will target sections of society that are in dire need of entrepreneurship opportunities.

On April 22, 2015, Senior Vice President of the GCCI, Mr. Vishnu Doerga met with representatives from Guyana Logistics and Support Services Inc., Mr. Gregory Sukull, Projects Planning Officer and Mr. Glen Low- A- Chee, Operations Manager. The meeting aimed to provide their client from Suriname, Cool Expert N.V., with an introduction to the Guyanese market, after which a presentation was made to the GCCI’s Executive board at its Statutory Meeting on April 27, 2015.

On April 30, 2015, the Chamber hosted its 125th Anniversary Celebration and the launch of the 6th edition of its Business Guyana Magazine with a Blacktie Affair Dinner held at the Pegasus Hotel, Savannah Suite. The Guest Speaker of the esteemed event was His Excellency, James Gregory Quinn, British High Commissioner. With over a hundred guests, the evening proved to be an exquisite one. The evening events included a cocktail, speeches by esteemed speakers, dinner, music, and the unveiling of the 6th Edition of the Business Guyana Magazine.

MAY 2 0 1 5 On May 22, 2015, the President of the GCCI, Mr. Lance Hinds, held a meeting with representatives from the Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (ECLAC), who were preparing the annual economic survey of Latin America & the Caribbean.

This survey will examine the evolution of the region’s economy for 2015.

The Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Caribbean Technology Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network with coordination support from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) organized a project in Guyana- “Workshop on Modern Techniques for Mould Design and Manufacturing for Ceramic and Pottery Producers”as part of an effort to strengthen the capacity of local craftspeople to improve the efficiency of their work, thereby better positioning themselves to capitalize upon the growing demand for their products in the Caribbean Region. The workshop took place from May 25 to June 12, 2015 at the Girl Guides Pavilion and thirty (30) artisans (20 females and 10 males) from various parts of Guyana attended.

JU N E 2 0 1 5 On June 16, 2015, Senior Vice President of the GCCI, Mr. Vishnu Doerga represented the Chamber at the Third Regional Caribbean Growth Forum in St Lucia. The following themes were discussed: (i) ways to harness growth in the Caribbean today; (ii) opportunities in value chain approaches to building linkages among growth sectors and the development of competitive industries in the region; and (iii) prospects to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in growth clusters.

On June 22, 2015, Executive Director (ag), Ms. Krysten Sewett, represented the Chamber at a one day workshop for Entrepreneurs on Angel Investment in Barbados. The workshop was the first in a series to be hosted by the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA). The objective of the workshop was to introduce to the participants to the concept of angel investing, the profile of typical Angels and what they are looking for in potential investments.

On July 8, 2015, the Executive Management Committee of the GCCI met with President David Granger and Executives. The focus of the meeting was to bring the President up to date with the functions of the Chamber and its plans to work with the new administration. President of the GCCI, Mr. Lance Hinds noted that the meeting was a great opportunity for the Chamber to introduce its members, and to pledge their support to working with the new administration.

On July 20, 2015, Mr. Lance Hinds, President of the GCCI, held a meeting with the representatives of TIME magazine, who were doing a special selection on the economy and investment prospects in Guyana to be published later in the year.

On July 23, 2015, Mr. Lance Hinds, President of the GCCI, met with a five member team from the Newpark Drilling Fluids who are interested in establishing a branch of Newpark in Guyana.

The Caribbean Development Bank’s (CDB) Caribbean Technology Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network with coordination support from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) organized a half day workshop on Gender Sensitization which was held on July 30, 2015 at the Herdmanston Lodge. The workshop aimed to provide an understanding of the linkages between gender equality and the economic and social factors that affect the growth of the Arts and Craft Industry. A total of twenty one (21) persons (17 females and 4 males) attended and actively contributed to the workshop process and content. The topics covered by the facilitator, Ms. Renata Chuck-a-sung, included: the meaning of gender, its importance, human rights, non-discrimination, gender analysis, demographic profile, practice and participation, challenges and recommendations.

On July 24, 2015, Mr. Lance Hinds, President of the GCCI, met with Ms. Lisa Cordillo and Ms. Marina Garcia, Project Associates of World Investment News, who were coordinating a series of reports focusing on the Caribbean and starting with Guyana to be published worldwide within the prestigious publication, the Harvard Business Review.

On August 6, 2015, Mr. Lance Hinds, President GCCI, held a Meeting with representatives from a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), a Trinidad company, who are interested in extending their services to Guyana, through the provision of tax services, and also, to partner with the GCCI in future endeavors.

PROCOLOMBIA provides business opportunities, clear information on requirements, strategies for expanding services and goods at an international level, participation in business fairs and assistance by experts for investors, exporters, and professionals that wish to come closer to their dreams

On August 28, 2015, the GCCI in collaboration with GeoTech Vision Guyana hosted “Executive Style: Networking with a Twist”. It was an After Hours forum held under theme “Inspire Possibilities…Breaking Boundaries” for business executives. It was held at the Aura Bar & Lounge, Pegasus Hotel. This event gave all in attendance the opportunity to hear a short presentation and opened new frontiers for business.

The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Caribbean Technological Consultancy Services (CTCS) Network with coordination support from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and further assistance from the Food and Drug Department, organized a Workshop on ServSafe Training and Certification for Food Service Managers and Handlers in Guyana. The workshop was held as part of an effort to improve the safety of food consumed by locals and tourists, thus making Guyana more marketable as a tourism destination. This 3 day workshop began on September 15 and ended on September 17, 2015 at the Herdmanston Lodge (days 1 and 3) and Cara Lodge Hotel (day 2) of which thirty five (35) persons (26 females and 9 males) from various parts of Guyana attended.

On September 17, 2015, GCCI in collaboration with Fujitsu Caribbean conducted a seminar titled “Next-Generation Developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)”. During this event participants had an exclusive look at the next generation developments in ICT, alongside internationally-esteemed partners such as Microsoft, Cisco, Check Point, Oracle and Symantec.

It required existing and potential small business owners to use Scotiabank’s free online Plan Writer tool to prepare a Business Plan and submit it to the Bank by October 23, 2015.The exciting Business Plan competition saw the winner taking home a $500,000 for a startup business account with the Bank. In addition, the finalists received a 4 months coaching package from ActionCoach.

On October 23, 2015, the GCCI held a Leadership Seminar at the Pegasus Hotel on the theme “Leading by Example”. Its objective was to provide managers and supervisors with a practical roadmap for developing their leadership skills and increasing employee morale and productivity. Panelists included Mr. Vishnu Doerga: “Leadership and Employee Engagement”; Mr. Rawle Dundas: “Challenges to True Leadership, Caring, Connecting, Growing”; and Mr. Gary Thompson: “Transformational Leadership”.

The GCCI in collaboration with Palm Court hosted a BBQ fundraising event on November 28, 2015 at Palm Court. It was an afternoon filled with fun, food and music, and all proceeds went to Chamber’s initiatives for the year 2016.

From November 9-13, 2015, the Executive Director (ag), Ms. Krysten Sewett, represented the GCCI at a training hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) in Barbados on Managing for Development Results (MfDR).

MfDR is the management strategy used by development agencies around the world, which aims to improve transparency, accountability and effectiveness in development. MfDR entails strategic planning, performance measurement and management, with a strong focus on results.

Like previous years, the GCCI held its final bing event for the year 2015, its Annual Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the Pegasus Hotel. The Guest Speaker of the esteemed event was Professor Chad Perry of the Australian Institute of Business and the Feature Address was delivered by the Minster of Business, Honorable Dominic Gaskin.

The gala event was an exquisite one, whereby, extraordinary individuals and businesses were recognized for their invaluable contributions to the Guyanese business community and Guyana at large.

A Renewable Energy (RE) workshop was held on December 12, 2015 by the Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CaPRI) in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Secretariat (CARICOM) and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). Representatives from the public and private sectors participated and contributed their insights on issues surrounding renewable energy development in Guyana. The workshop also saw CaPRI presenting and seeking feedback on the findings and outputs of their work, which included the introduction of webbased tools designed to assist RE stakeholders.

JAN UARY 2 0 1 6 On January 27, 2016 the GCCI hosted the first “The Conversation Circle: Inspiring Young Minds for a Great Future.”

The objective of this program is to enable young entrepreneurs to benefit from the experiences of prominent business owners. These business owners, who are members of the Chamber, will serve as mentors who will bring their diverse perspectives and expertise on a variety of topics relating to business owners.

On February 25, 2016 the GCCI was invited to attend an information sharing forum entitled ‘Let’s Talk Business” hosted by EMPRETECH Guyana at the Georgetown Club. EMPRETEC has designed this program to provide the necessary business information to entrepreneurs, which they believe is critical to enabling businesses to operate successfully in the Guyana business environment.

MARC H 2 0 1 6 On March 3, 2016 the President of the GCCI, Mr. Lance Hinds, met with a consultancy team from Landell Mills Ltd who are developing a sustainable Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (M E & R) framework for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The purpose of the M E & R framework is to help determine the effectiveness of the CSME in delivering the benefits of regional economic integration to the people of the Community.

Annual Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony 2015 On Thursday, December 3, 2015, the Chamber held its Annual Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel.

Business, Honorable Dominic Gaskin. Minister Gaskin expounded on the Ministry’s plans to support the growth of businesses in the upcoming year, 2016.

The Ceremony was the Chamber's most high profile event, and it provided business executives with a priceless opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

Most importantly, it was a time for the Chamber to celebrate individuals and organizations who have made invaluable contributions to Guyana.

Gala festivities included a cocktail reception at 7 p.m., dinner, an entertainment segment, speeches by esteemed individuals, the presentation of awards, and the drawing of attractive door prizes. This year, eight (8) Awards were presented, including Business of the Year Award (Small to Medium), Business of the Year Award (Large), Young Business Executive Award, President's Award, Corporate Citizenship Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Award for Innovation and Media Award.

The guest speaker of this momentous occasion was Professor Chad Perry of the Australian Institute of Business (AIB). Professor Perry, who is a distinguished Professor in the field of marketing and management, delivered remarks on how Guyana can grow its economy by adopting a more comprehensive and careful approach to International Trade.

General information The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a not-for-prot organisation that was established by an Act of Parliament on February 5, 1890 and its registered ofce is located at Lot 156 'C' Waterloo Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown. During the year 1982, the organisation's name was changed from "The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry" to "Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry".

The objectives of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as stipulated by the "Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Act" are as follows:

(a) the promotion and protection in Guyana of trade and services, local, regional and foreign; (b) to promote and encourage the development of Guyana of primary industries and manufacturing and processing operations with the use as far as possible of local raw materials and expertise and the application of modern and efcient methods of maintenance, standards of safety and labour relations; (c) to encourage adherence by manufacturers to proper qualitative standards in their products; (d) to promote within and outside Guyana by means of advertisement, trade fairs and in any other manner, the consumption and the use of goods manufactured or produced in Guyana. (e) to assist in the procurement of overseas markets for goods produced in Guyana; (f)

to collect and disseminate statistical and other information relating to commerce, trade, manufacture and industry;

(g) to use its good ofces in the settlement of disputes involving members of the local commercial and industrial community; (h) to consider all matters connected with trade, manufacture, industry and commerce, and where appropriate, to make representations and express an opinion or take a position on any such matters; (i)

to imitate, promote or to comment on actual or proposed legislative, regulatory or administrative measures affecting trade, manufacture or industry and to communicate or cooperate with the appropriate governmental institutions in respect of such measures;

(j)

to encourage generally but more particularly among the membership, the adherence to ethical standards in trade, manufacture, industry and commerce and to aid and support in any manner other associations or bodies having objects similar to those of the Chamber;

(k) to amalgamate or afliate with any institution having objects similar to those of the Chamber, and in the event of an amalgamation to transfer the property of the Chamber to any such institution; and (l)

to do all such things as may be requisite and necessary for the attainment of the objects of the Chamber, including the receiving and donating gifts, investing the income and funds of the Chamber, and the borrowing of money.

Basis of preparation and accounting policies These nancial statements have been prepared in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standard for Small and Medium-sized Entities issued by the International Accounting Standards Board.

(a) Basis of accounting These nancial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

(b) Income & expenditure Income & expenditure are dealt with in these nancial statements on the accrual basis of accounting.

(c) Property, plant & equipment Items of property, plant and equipment are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses.

Depreciation is charged so as to allocate the cost of assets less their residual values over their estimated useful lives, using the reducing balance method. The following annual rates are used for the depreciation of property, plant and equipment: Land & building Ofce furniture & equipment

If there is an indication that there has been a signicant change in depreciation rate, useful life or residual value of an asset, the depreciation of that asset is revised prospectively to reect the new expectations.

Revenue recognition When the outcome of a transaction can be estimated reliably, revenue is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the transaction at the reporting date, provided that all of the following criteria are met:

Revenue from providing related services is recognized when all the following conditions are satised: (i) The amount of revenue can be measured reliably; (ii) It is probable that the economic benets associated with the transaction will ow to the entity; (iii) The cost incurred or to be incurred in respect of the transaction can be measured reliably; and (iv) The stage of completion at the reporting date can be measured reliably.

(e) Reporting currency These nancial statements are stated in Guyana Dollars and foreign currency transactions during the year were translated at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of those transactions. Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies at the date of the statement of nancial position are translated at the prevailing exchange rate at the end of the year and exchange gain/losses were recognised in the statement of comprehensive income.

Comparability requirement Relevant amounts in the nancial statements for the year 2014 were reclassied and the presentation was reconstructed to conform with the presentation of the nancial statements for the year ended December 31, 2015.

Contingency fund During the prior years a bank account was established by the Chamber with Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited for the sole purpose of offering relief from disasters.
