} President’s Remarks

It has been a tremendous honor to lead the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) for the past two terms and I would like to express how grateful I am to have been given this tremendous honour and privilege of serving as the president of this Chamber.

In 2013/2014, the Chamber continued where it left off the previous year and has achieved much of its stated organisational goals and objectives. We continued to offer services to our membership that allows them the opportunity to expand and develop their businesses. We have done this while preserving and increasing our financial capacity to ensure the organization’s long-term success and sustainability. We have also remained a very visible organization through our many advocacy channels and media coverage. Additionally, we have connected to an international audience through advertisements in promotional publications geared for international travelers and investors and through our regularly updated website and social media platforms.

The Advocacy Committee was reconstituted for a second consecutive year and has been very vocal in articulating the Chamber’s positions on pertinent issues to the business community. The Committee also arranged and engaged a wide cross section of stakeholders in order to identify synergies and areas of mutual interests that would lead to a reduction in the top 20 barriers to Guyana’s competitiveness that were identified in the Chamber’s “Competitiveness Manifesto.”

This year the GCCI observes and celebrates a significant distinction and milestone: 125 years as an organization. We will commemorate this occasion with a menu of events and activities under the theme “Extension”, which signals our growth and expansion as an organisation as we move forward. Some of the activities include a scaled up Annual Gala Dinner; a Distinguished Lecture Series in collaboration with the University of Guyana; launching of a new secretariat building; a historical commemorative booklet; a day of service and the identification and recognition of 125 businesspersons who have contributed to the development of Guyana, among other initiatives.

As we reflect on our past with much affection and nostalgia, the GCCI cannot help but be excited and optimistic about its future. Although the Georgetown Chamber is the oldest and only statutory private sector representative organisation in the country, it is still one of the most dynamic, respected and influential today.

In closing, I want to thank all members of the Secretariat for their invaluable guidance and backing. I would also like to thank the members and Councillors for their staunch and enduring support over the past two years. My best wishes and full backing and support to the new President and his or her Council.

Mission, Vision, Core Values & Strategic Priorities Chamber Profile

The GCCI is the oldest private sector representative organization in Guyana (established in 1890) and is a member-driven and professionally staffed non-profit association of business people committed to improving the economic climate and quality of life in Guyana. We are legislatively mandated under the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry Act Chapter 89:03 of the laws of Guyana.

The Chamber’s strength lies in the size and diversity of its membership—both large and small businesses from virtually every sector are represented.

The GCCI represents the voice of the business community in Guyana and strives to advocate policies, stimulate trade and investment, connect businesses, sustain economic growth and expand member opportunities with the aim of contributing to a stable and sustainable economic and social environment in Guyana where businesses can prosper.

During the year 2012, the Chamber had reached out to its members and secured corporate sponsorship support from three members, namely, Digicel Guyana with sponsorship of $1,000,000; Courts Guyana with sponsorship of $250,000; and German’s Restaurant with sponsorship of $250,000 for the film project called “The Chamber’s Film Series”. One of the films titled “To the Night” was shown at the Annual Dinner & Awards Ceremony 2012.

On January 30, 2013, the University of Guyana (CineGuyana) and the Chamber teamed-up to premier the films at the “Avinash Theatre Entertainment Complex” as a Social and Red Carpet Event.

January 2013 The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) hosted a Leadership Seminar on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel Guyana. The seminar aimed to sensitize the business community on real world and practical experiences of leadership to demonstrate how effective leadership can transform their organizations and to help them realise their full potential.

Presenters included: Ms. Cathy Hughes, prominent Business Executive, Former President of the Tourism & Hospitality Association and a current Member of Parliament; Mr. Stanley Ming, prominent Business Executive and Chief Executive Officer of Mings Products & Services Limited and; and Professor Miguel Carrillo, Executive Director and Professor of Strategy of Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.

A one-day Fire Prevention Seminar was held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the GNS Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue. This Seminar was jointly hosted by the Guyana Fire Service in collaboration with the Fire Advisory Board and the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The seminar formed a major part of the public relations and education sub-committee programme of the Fire Advisory Board and aimed to sensitize the business community and raised awareness of the importance of fire prevention and general safety issues.

The Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee officially opened the seminar. Other speakers of the event were: Mr. Marlon Gentle, Chief Fire Officer and Mr. Raj Singh, Chairman of the Fire Advisory Board.

February 2013 The Executive Director, Ms. Bonita Marissa Lowden attended a workshop on Cluster Competitiveness which was held in collaboration with the Compete Caribbean Program and the Caribbean Centre for Competitiveness (CCfC) at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus from February 18th-22nd, 2013.

The GCCI held its 123rd Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Duke Lodge, Duke Street, Kingston, Georgetown to elect its new Council for the year 2013/2014. The Auditor’s Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2012 were also presented and an auditor for the following Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, year was appointed.

Participants at the Cluster Competitiveness Workshop

The workshop intended to support cluster development in the Caribbean and was targeted to public sector policy makers, as well as business support organizations, and others that work or intend to work with clusters.

The main focus of the seminar was to understand the importance of using clusters as a tool to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in competitiveness policy. Participants gained a new perspective of clusters and their development and a strategic point of view that will help them take one step forward in the understanding of competitiveness at the cluster level (regionally, nationally or internationally).

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and Small Business Bureau hosted a ‘Small Business Empowerment Seminar’ on April 10, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel.

The Seminar was free and targeted the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It provided the tools and information needed for potential and/or existing business owners to set up or maintain successful small enterprises in order to strengthen their capacity to support the growth and development of the small business community for employment generation and contribution to economic growth.

} 13 Business Association, Patrick Zephyr provided a brief over of his institution and stressed the need to organise the private sector arm of the small business community. Remarks were also received from the Honourable Irfaan Ali, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.

The event was chaired by Peter Ramsaroop and the main presenters of the seminar included: 1) Ameena Yearwood from the Bank of Nova Scotia Guyana who provided participants with some tips on Success Secrets; 2) Derrick Cummings from the Small Business Bureau provide an overview on the Bureau’s role in supporting the growth and sustainability of Micro and Small Enterprises in Guyana; 3) Balraj Kistow from the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, University of West Indies spoke about SME Empowerment and Food Security – Feeding Ourselves in the 21st Century; 4) Michael De Jonge from the Ministry of Finance spoke about the Ministry’s role in public procurement in Guyana; 5) Floyd Haynes from Haynes Inc. provided an overview on entrepreneurship and leadership; 6) Michelle Johnson from Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited presented on the increasing relevance of Small and Micro Enterprises (SME) Empowerment; and 7) Leisa Gibson from the Women Entrepreneurship Network (WENET) gave an introduction of WENET and its main objects and urged women entrepreneurs to join the group.

Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) in collaboration with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Guyana Office for Investment, hosted a Direct Assistance Grant Scheme (DAGS) workshop on April 23, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel. The workshop aimed to explain and illustrate to firms and Business Support Organizations how to prepare an application for a grant.

The Seminar included a platform of exhibitors, who displayed opportunities, resources and services offered by small business support organisations and certainly served as an opportunity to network in a focused environment.

May 2013 Guyana’s private sector umbrella organisations are vulnerable to the shortage of potential leadership volunteers from the private sector to head those organisations. In light of this, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) held a Leadership Training Workshop on May 16, 2013 at the Office of the Chamber with Private Sector Leaders.

The facilitator of the workshop was Mr. Clare Paulson, Corporate Coach and a Canadian Executive Services Organisation Volunteer. Participants of the seminar benefitted from numerous avenues for enhancing their qualities of good leadership. Some of these benefits included: improved management and leadership skills; improved communication skills; improved collaboration skills; improved critical thinking skills; improved financial management skills; and improved project management skills.

The GCCI staff benefited from a half day training session in Dynamic Communication on May 18, 2013. The training session was designed to help people win and achieve a greater degree of success in life and work. Specifically, the session helped to: 1) Understand the benefits of applying a behavioural communication model; 2) Understand your own behavioural model; 3) Recognize, understand and appreciate the behavioural designs of others; 4) Adapt your behaviours for enhanced communication, understanding and relationships and ; 5) Identify behavioural styles by observing tone of voice, words, body language and pace.

The GCCI launched its 4th Edition of the Business Guyana Magazine on May, 28, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel Guyana. The “Business Guyana” magazine is a first-class, high quality, annual publication that is designed to promote Guyana as an attractive destination for international business and investment.

June 2013 The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce hosted a ‘Business Technology Seminar’ on June 12, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel Guyana.

The importance of information technology and computing systems has increased exponentially in the last few years.

Consequently, the outcome of every strategic business decision will at some point hinge on the application of new technology advancements.

The seminar was an interactive session, as technology experts shared new developments, best practises and how technology can improve, streamline and save both time and money to businesses. Speakers of the seminar included: 1) Mr. Lenandlar Singh, University of Guyana, Technology Department; 2) Mr. Alexie Ramotar, E-Governance Unit; 3) Mr. Tudor John, Inova Solutions; 4) Mr. Rosh Khan, SocialRank and; 5) Mr. Lance Hinds, BrainStreet Group.

Presentations were received from the Government of Guyana, Non-Governmental Organisations, the International Financial and Investor Communities, the Local Business Community and Related Associations and the Diplomatic Corps. The President of the GCCI, Mr. Clinton Urling was part of a panel discussion on the identification of domestic and international challenges and opportunities facing current and potential investors.

The GCCI participated in a Guyana Investment Conference

under the theme ‘Maximising Opportunities for Investment in Guyana’ on June 27-28, 2013 at the International Conference Centre. The conference was sponsored by the United States of America, United Kingdom and European Union Missions.

The objectives of the seminar were:• To encourage greater foreign direct investment

and enhance the ease of doing business in

Guyana including through export credits.

• To promote good governance by identifying

areas where greater transparency, regulatory

reform and enhanced enforcement is required.

The GCCI launched its Competitiveness Manifesto on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Office of the Chamber.

The Chamber recognizes that building a more productive, more internationally competitive economy represents an unprecedented collective project that involves virtually every network and stakeholder group in the country. It becomes the responsibility of business, parliamentarians, the educational sector, all levels of government, and even every Guyanese citizen. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce has the strength, voice and willingness to bring all parties together to help Guyana develop its competitive edge as an emerging economic powerhouse.

In order to break through the barriers to higher growth levels and to meet the most urgent development challenges, the power of the private sector in Guyana needs to be unleashed so that the best practices of a well-coordinated knowledge-based, 21st century economy can be shared and implemented throughout every sector and aspect of the nation’s economy.

The challenges of achieving and sustaining significantly higher economic growth, of reducing poverty, of creating good jobs for our labor force, of building strong businesses and a healthy private sector must be met initially by working through and resolving the issues associated with numerous current barriers to Guyana’s capacity and capabilities for global economic competitiveness.

The presentation points by the team were: Integrated Crime Information System & I Paid A Bribe, Crime Trends, Crime Mapping, Safe Neighbourhoods Crime and Social Observatory and Houses of Justice.

Other key stakeholders shared best practices and trends in modern security systems, namely: Mr. Randy Storm, President of the Guyana Association of Private Security Organisations (GAPSO) who spoke about security in the business environment; Mr. Michael Ram, Head of Operational Risk Department, Republic Bank Guyana Limited highlighted issues relating to online banking security while Mr. Maurice Amres, Chief Executive Officer, GEB Security Services Inc., touched on electronic security and preventative measures for fire as it relates to the business environment. Mr. Doonauth Danny, Electrical Engineer of NT Computeac also spoke about some of the services offered by NT Computeac for business and home security.

August 2013 The GCCI hosted a Security Seminar on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel. The purpose of the seminar was to sensitise the business community on issues relating to security in Guyana and to inform participants on some of the initiatives undertaken and services offered by various institutions to help ensure a safe business environment in Guyana.

September 2013 The GCCI collaborated with Empretec Guyana Inc. to host a series of Customer Service Workshops targeting Customer Service representatives, Supervisors and Managers on September 24, 25, 26, 2013 at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre - Red House. The workshop was organized as a result of the insight gathered from recent interviews with key stakeholders on the deficiency of customer service experienced throughout companies in Guyana.

The workshop was conducted by experienced Facilitators who were qualified both in knowledge and experience in working with companies in developing customer focused strategy. These persons were: 1) Ms. Jennifer Flatts & Associate, 2) Mr. Rawle Dundas and, 3) Ms. Janice London.

October 2013 The President of the GCCI, Mr. Clinton Urling attended and represented the private sector at the VII Americas Competitiveness Forum (ACF) in Panama, hosted by the Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC) during October 2 – 4, 2013. The VII ACF, is the most important public-private hemispheric forum on competitiveness which provides a unique opportunity for leaders to contribute their knowledge and experience in building the Americas Infrastructure Agenda and maintaining the momentum toward the sustainable growth of their economies.

The GCCI hosted a Customer Service Seminar on October 15, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel Guyana. The seminar aimed to sensitize the business community on issues relating to customer service in Guyana and help participants increase their customer service skills, develop a greater appreciation of customer value and raise the quality of the service they provide to customers. Speakers of the seminar included: 1) Ms. Joycelyn Williams, International Development Consultant of JTW & Associates Management Institute Inc; 2) Mr. Rawle Dundas, Director of Professional Development Enterprise and; 3) Mr. Komal Singh, Director of Gaico Construction Inc. (Special Training in Interpersonal Relationship and Customer Service Skills).

The President of the GCCI, Mr. Clinton Urling represented the Private Sector by attending the 54th Strategy for Peace Conference on October 16 and 18, 2013 in Warrenton, Virginia, United States. The Conference was organized in three concurrent roundtables and the most relevant roundtable for Guyana was “Preventing mass atrocities: Resilient societies, state capacity and structural reform”.

November 2013 On November 7 USAID’s Skills and Knowledge for Youth Employment (SKYE) in collaboration with Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) launched a Youth Job Bank at the Roraima Duke Lodge.

The SKYE Job Bank was created after discussion with Mr. Clinton Urling, President of the GCCI and Member of the SKYE Employment Sector Advisory Group (ESAG). The objective was to have the job bank serve as a resource for GCCI members and other employers to check the site when in need of semi-skilled labour.

GCCI now hosts the Job Bank on its website and will also maintain and update the job bank. SKYE will continue to send information on youths to GCCI and also inform GCCI when youths are employed and need to be taken off of the website.

The GCCI partnered with the Society Against Sexual Orientation and Discrimination (SASOD) to host a “Business and Human Rights: Tackling Workplace Discrimination Seminar” on November 13, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel.

The seminar sensitized business owners and senior managers on human rights issues and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in the workplace, with the view of enhancing their understanding of the issues by discussing how they can contribute to promoting equality in the workplace, and nationwide in Guyana. The seminar also discussed the business case for respecting human rights, demonstrating how work environments which include and respect sexual and gender diversity enhance business efficiency; by giving those businesses a competitive edge, whilst boosting their bottom line.

The GCCI in collaboration with the High Commission of India hosted a two hour cocktail and information sharing session, in the form of a presentation by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), on November 14, 2013 at the Georgetown Club. The presentation provided an introduction of FICCI and an overview of the Indian Economy.

The Fire Advisory Board in collaboration with the Guyana Fire Service, and the GCCI hosted a one-day Fire Prevention Seminar on November 21, 2013 at the Everest Cricket Club Members Pavilion. The event was fully sponsored by the Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire & Life Group of Companies.

The seminar formed a major part of the public relations and education sub-committee programme of the Fire Advisory Board and intended to inform participants of the importance of fire prevention and general safety issues.

Advocacy Work

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) acts on behalf of the business community advocating at all levels of society to create the conditions businesses need to grow and succeed.

The Chamber’s Advocacy Committee has been busy over the year and has made public, many of its positions.

•

June 25, 2013, Security Bills

The Chamber objected to the parliamentary opposition’s non-support for security related bills, if the Minister of Home Affairs brought those bills to the National Assembly. The Chamber argued that no one benefits if critical security upgrade legislation are shunned on such grounds and reiterated that security is a major issue of concern to the private sector and society as a whole and it urged the combined opposition to rethink this strategy.

• June 25, 2013, National Minimum Wage Order The GCCI met with the Minister of Labour, Hon. Nanda Gopaul, to discuss the National Minimum Wage Order on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. The Chamber’s delegation was headed by Mr. Clinton Urling, President of the GCCI, and included members of the Chamber’s executive and other private sector representatives. Also present at the meeting were Mr. Samuel Goolsarran of the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industries Ltd. (CAGI) and Mr. Norris Witter of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC).

The Chamber sought clarifications on a number of issues relating to the order, which came into effect on July 01st, 2013.

• June 26, 2013, Competitiveness Manifesto

Launch

of

GCCI President, Clinton Urling remarked that the barriers identified in the Chamber’s Competitiveness Manifesto are hindering Guyana’s current economic growth

trajectory. His comments were made at the launching of the manifesto. The Competitiveness Manifesto, in random order, listed 20 barriers to competitiveness in Guyana. The document includes calls for the urgent commencement of the Public Procurement Commission (PPC) and the inclusion of Private Sector concessions to the mandate of the PPC; ensuring political and economic stability; improving the tax system; implementing comprehensive security sector reform; establishing a development bank; resolving Guyana’s skills challenge; making Guyana a magnet for Foreign Direct Investment; building a globally competitive manufacturing sector; and accelerating the implementation of the National Competitiveness Strategy.

• July 5, 2013, GCCI Meets with Members of the Alliance For Change The GCCI, led by President Clinton Urling, met with leaders of the Alliance for Change (AFC) political party on Thursday, July 04. Among the issues discussed were the Chamber’s advocacy positions as contained in the “Top 20 Barriers to Competitiveness” document, the AFC’ s views on Intellectual Property legislation, the Guyana Power & Light, Security legislation, Public Procurement Commission, and Anti-Money Laundering Legislation.

• July 8, 2013, GCCI Discusses UG Transformation with Vice Chancellor The GCCI, led by President Clinton Urling, met with the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Guyana Dr. Jacob Opadeyi on July 08. At the meeting, the Chamber shared it Competitiveness Manifesto with the VC and expressed its desire to work with the university in contributing to lowering the barriers to competitiveness that are identified in the document.

} 29 The Chamber President also reiterated the Chamber’s position that it would like to see the transformation of the University of Guyana into a well-managed, well-financed, dynamic and professional organization that is recognized as a hub for national research and development and as a center for producing a competent and qualified skilled labour force that meets the needs of our rapidly evolving private sector.

• July 16, 2013, Police Should Release Anti-Crime Strategy In the wake of a spate of robberies on business places and business persons, the GCCI called on the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to reveal its plan to address the growing scourge. The GCCI also urged business persons to take precautionary measures to ensure that they have adequate security infrastructure and procedures in place to reduce the likelihood of their businesses being targeted. Another GCCI suggestion is for businesses to use private security services when transporting huge sums of cash and provide advice on implementing security systems and strategies.

• July 17, 2013, GCCI Support of Amaila Falls Project The GCCI endorsed called on all parliamentary stakeholders to support the passage of the Guarantee of Loans (Public Corporations and Companies) Act and the Hydro-Electric Power (Amendment) Bill 2013. In a press statement, the GCCI stated, “this is consistent with our position as stated in our Competitiveness Manifesto that we fully endorse efforts that support innovation and investment in the infrastructure required to develop and deploy renewable energy sources, which ultimately could mitigate the costs of electricity and other conventional energy sources. Thus, Guyana should enlarge its efforts to develop hydropower.

• July 29, 2013, Berbice expo opens with advocacy for standards The GCCI was present at the ninth annual Berbice Exposition held under the theme “Raising our Standards, Enhancing

our Competitiveness” with the main aim to promote the importance of Guyana stepping up in standards.

GCCI President, Clinton Urling highlighted the importance of passing the prerequisite legislation that will pave the way for approval and construction of the Amaila Falls Hydro Power project. He also proposed the establishment of an independent panel to investigate the economic feasibility of the project.

• August 9, 2013, Passage of Local Government Election Bills The Chamber applauded the passage of the Local Government Commission Bill, the Local Government (Amendment) Bill, the Municipal and District Councils (Amendment) Bill, the Fiscal Transfers Bill, and the HydroElectric Power (Amendment) Bill. The chamber noted that the development stood as a demonstration of political maturity and leadership and what our parliamentary policy makers can achieve if dialogue, disclosure, and compromise form the foundation of their engagements.

Furthermore, the GCCI stated that it looks forward to the President of Guyana, H.E. Donald Ramotar’s assent to the aforementioned Bills.

• September 17, 2013, GCCI Urges Settlement of Stone Shortage Issue The GCCI urged Ministry of Public Works and BK International Inc. to reach a settlement that would ensure a win-win situation for the infrastructure, construction and building sectors in Guyana. The Public Works Ministry and BK International had been at loggerheads following the announcement of a shortage in domestically produced stones by President Donald Ramotar just over a week ago.

• October 3, 2013, Intellectual Property Law Needs to be Updated Vice President (VP) of the GCCI, Lance Hinds urged policy makers to update the nation’s Intellectual Property Law (IPL), since Guyana’s current laws are not adequately updated to protect 21st century businesses that depend on these products. He noted that, “what is attracting a lot of attention on the market is information technology, knowledge based industries and creative industries specifically with arts.”

The VP added, “If you are going to foster innovation, you will need to provide that sort of comfort and build an environment where people could feel at ease and not worry and they know that should anything happen there is proper legal ways that could be used to achieve some sort of justice.”

• October 14, 2013, GCCI Supports Fire Service Call for Demolishing of Derelict Buildings in Georgetown The GCCI expressed its support of calls by the Guyana Fire Advisory Board for the removal of derelict buildings in and around the capital city. The Chamber stated that since 2009 the buildings were inspected, photographed and the City Engineers’ Department was informed of the eminent danger that these buildings create throughout the City.

Further he noted, the private sector views the union as a natural partner as both parties depend on an important constituency for its survival and that is the Workers and employees all across the length and breath of Guyana.

• November 18, 2013, Stakeholders Consultation to Restrict the Use of Styrofoam The Chamber supports the ban on polystyrene (styrfoam) which is scheduled to come into effect in June of 2014.

GCCI President Clinton Urling noted that the impact on businesses is expected to be minimal and is unlikely to amount to any economic hardship to any sector.

GCCI President, Clinton Urling cited that Guyana needs a holistically integrated management plan addressing the solid waste problem across the country by focusing on a three-step process that starts from waste generation and storage, moves to safe collection, and culminates in environmentally responsible final disposal.

} 31 • January 10, 2014, Stabroek News Interviews President of Chamber President GCCI President, Clinton Urling noted that in 2013 the economy revealed glaring vulnerabilities with the precipitous price drop in the international gold market and the uncertainty surrounding major infrastructural works due to political discord. However, from all indications, the economy continues to display resilience and will undoubtedly record another year of favorable growth.

He further added that even though some firms have complained that their businesses have slowdown, the resilience of the private sector, and, in particular, the gold and mining industries have impacted positively on Guyana’s economy. Despite challenges such as rising costs, stalled infrastructure projects, political wrangling, lower commodity prices, high electricity costs, and lack of skilled labour, the private sector remained undeterred and continued to invest and increase productivity which has resulted in sustained economic growth.

Despite all the challenges, Urling cited that he remained optimistic about the Guyana economy in 2014 and expects more foreign investments as factor endowments will always attract investments. However, the government has to be more proactive in this regard and that will have to start with reformed GO-Invest and with new leadership at the helm of that important agency. The country’s economic needs are outpacing public funds that are available to fund Guyana’s growth and expansion. Therefore, the crafting of innovative approaches to attract investments to Guyana is critical, in order to for the country to reach its full potential.

• January 15, 2014, Chamber Supports USAID Leadership Programme The GCCI expressed its full support and endorsement to the objectives of the LEAD project. The Chamber believes that its implementation will strengthen political institutions and enhance citizen understanding of how individuals can

engage in the larger civic and political discourse in their communities and throughout the country. The Chamber urged officials of both the Government of Guyana and US Embassy to resume discussions on the implementation of the USAID Leadership and Democracy Program (LEAD) with the objective of identifying a mutually feasible, pragmatic, common ground so that the project can be implemented effectively.

• January 20, 2014, GCCI Urges the Government to Mount a Formal Investigation into the Linden Agreement The GCCI urged the government to mount a formal investigation into the allegations made by the Regional Democratic Council Chairman of Region 10 that the committees established under the agreement that brought an end to the Linden protests in 2012 are nonfunctional and have achieved little to date. This is necessary to ascertain whether there is any merit to the accusations and take the necessary actions to ensure that the agreement is implemented according to the agreed terms and avoid a recurrence of 2012. The Georgetown Chamber will continue to monitor the developments and occurrences in Region 10 and sustain its role as an impartial broker in a potentially volatile process.

February 5, 2014, AML/CFT Bill

The GCCI called on all parliamentary representatives to leave political grandstanding out of the negotiations of the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Bill. The Chamber expressed disappointment in the position adopted by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to withdraw and not allow outside observers to the Parliamentary Select Committee debates concerning the amendments to the AML/CFT.

• GCCI’s Television Programme: The Chamber Business Review The GCCI commenced the airing of its first weekly television programme called “The Chamber’s Business Review” on the National Communications Network (NCN), Channel 11 and on Television Guyana (TVG), Channel 28. NCN and TVG were selected because of their wide broadcast reach across the country.

The weekly 1 hour programme is an informative television magazine intended to showcase the activities of the GCCI, featured interviews of eminent national, regional, and international business and academic leaders and the broadcast of our popular training seminars for the entire country’s benefit.

The GCCI has aired several videos of various training seminars, panel discussions and one-on-one interviews on topics in keeping with its Competitiveness Manifesto and national development.

Panel discussions and one-on-one interviews aired were: • Enacting Modern Intellectual Property Laws.

Mr. Clinton Urling is the youngest President in the history of the Chamber, serving for the 2012-2013 period. Mr. Urling also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Private Sector Commission.

He is the General Manager and Co-owner of German’s Restaurant.

Since 2005, Mr. Urling has been actively involved in the activities of the GCCI. He held the position of Honorary Secretary of the Chamber in 2007, Senior Vice President in 2008, Junior Vice-President in 2009, and Honorary Secretary in 2010. He is currently the Chairman of the GCCI’s Advocacy Committee and former Chairman of the Trade and Investment Committee. He was instrumental in the conceptualization and production of the Business Guyana Magazine from 2010-2014. He also served as Chairman of the Guyana Fire Advisory Board in 2008.

Mr. Urling holds an Undergraduate degree in International Relations from the University of Guyana (2004) and a Masters degree in Global Studies (Distinction) from the University of the West Indies (2011). His thesis research “CARICOM And UNASUR: Pertinence To Guyana’s Economic Success,” was adjudged and awarded the best research paper. Additionally, he has written extensively in the local print media and served as a business columnist for the Stabroek News Business Page.

Recognising his contributions toward the ‘Tiger Bay’ community, Clinton was awarded the Chamber’s Presidential Award in 2006 and has since been working towards extending his restaurant domestically and internationally.

Komal Ramnauth Immediate Past President

Mr. Komal Ramnauth is the Chief Executive Officer of Kojac Marketing Agency. Kojac Marketing Agency has been a member of the Chamber since 1993. Mr. Ramnauth has, apart from assisting the Chamber over the years in its renovation drive, also actively promoted the GCCI through personal marketing strategies as well as through recruitment of a number of its new members.

Additionally, he played a pivotal role in spearheading and providing financial support for the Chamber’s fiveyear strategic plan which was created in 2008. Mr. Ramnauth was awarded the Chamber’s Award in 2009 in recognition of his contributions to the Chamber.

Prior to being elected President in 2010, Mr. Ramnauth served as the Senior Vice President. Not only did he chair

the Chamber’s Security and Governance Sub-Committee, he also sat on the Trade and Investment, and Membership Committees. He currently chairs the Renovation Committee.

His representation of the GCCI also extended to the Private Sector Commission where he sat on the Council and the body’s Governance and Security Committee. He was also Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Social Sectors SubCommittee.

He serves on the Board of Directors of the Guyana Power and Light and has previously served on the Audit Committee.

He currently sits on the Commercial Committee as well as the Finance Committee and is also Chairman of the Tender Board Committee.

Mr. Lance Hinds has been on the GCCI Executive for 4 years. He served for two years as the Treasurer and the Secretary before being elected to be Senior Vice President in 2012.

Mr. Vishnu Doerga, DME, MBA is a Director of Doerga Business Enterprise, a management and investment company (est. 2000) and the Country Coordinator of Kaizen Environmental Services. Currently in his 11th year of Private Sector Development service, he was bestowed the 2011 Young Business Executive Award by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Padma Prashad Secretary

Ms. Padma Prashad was appointed Secretary of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the period 2013/2014. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Human Resources Management Committee of the Chamber.

Ms. Prashad holds a Bachelors Degree of Science in Business Management as well as a Diploma in Marketing from the University Of Guyana. She is currently the Group Brands Manager at Ansa McAl Trading limited.

Prior to joining the Ansa McAl conglomerate, Ms. Prashad started her career at the National Bank of Industry and Commerce, now known as Republic Bank. In 2004, she then joined the Neal and Massy Group of Company as a Product Specialist at Geddes Grant Guyana Limited. In 2008, she was appointed Brand Manager for Unilever at Desinco Trading limited. She then moved on to her current place of employment at Ansa McAl, where she has traversed Consumer goods and Construction as a Manage; today, she is responsible for the entire Ansa Group Products’ Portfolio.

Eon Grant Treasurer

Mr. Eon Grant, the Senior Credit Officer in the Corporate & Commercial Credit Department of Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited has over twenty five (25) years of banking and credit experience and is primarily responsible for commercial and Small and Medium Size Enterprises lending.

Mr. Grant holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (BCom) from the Nipissing University and is also an Associate of the Canadian Institute of Banking (AICB). Additionally, he holds various leadership positions within The Wesleyan

Church, through which he serves his community at both the national and local church levels.

Mr. Grant has been the appointed representative of Republic Bank to the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the past four (4) years and was appointed as Treasurer of the Chamber and Chairman of the Finance Committee for the period 2013/2014. He continues to be actively involved in the activities and work of the Chamber.

Bonita Marissa Lowden Executive Director

Ms. Bonita Marissa Lowden joined the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry in May 2012 in the capacity of the ‘Advocacy and Research Officer’ but today she now serves as the ‘Acting Executive Director’ of the Chamber.

Ms. Lowden has a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Relations from the University of Guyana (2008), as well as, a Master of Science Degree in Global Studies from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (2011).

Prior to joining the Chamber, Ms. Lowden has a range of work experience, in 2005 she served as a Clerk with a Mining and Exploration Company; in 2008 she served as a Project/Communication Officer with the Office of the President; and in November 2009 she served as a Research Assistant with the Office of the Pro-Chancellor, University of Guyana. In December 2009, she became a National United Nations Volunteer and served as such until

November 2011. Subsequently, Ms. Lowden went on to work with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development as a Youth Community Facilitator/Consultant.

Ms. Lowden also possesses training in the areas of Conflict Management, Project Management, Gender Sensitization, Family Planning, Advocacy and Community Mobilization, and Project Proposal Writing.

One of her major achievement is the publication of her Master of Science Thesis titled “Climate Change and its Implications on Guyana’s Foreign Policy” by the University of West Indies, St. Augustine in a book titled “Selected Essays on Contemporary Caribbean issues: An International Relations Perspective”.

Ms. Lowden now presents her knowledge and skills to the Chamber to effectively execute its mission, vision and core values while abiding by the quote “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Today, the GCCI is one of the most influential and strongest representatives of the largest number of private industrial and commercial organisations in Guyana.

The Membership Committee has implemented the “Member to Member Discount Programme” which is an initiative designed to provide benefits to members when doing business with each other. The Chamber’s ability to support its membership depends on understanding what they do, think, want and need. For this reason, the GCCI has developed and conducted its annual Members’ Attitudinal Survey to gain an insight into the economic challenges of running their businesses in the year 2012 and to capture their outlook for the New Year.

Building Business Connections through High-Level Networking Every year, the Chamber hosts numerous networking-related events to help businesses connect with new partners and clients, and get word out to the world on what they do.

} 43 The Chamber continues to strengthen its relations with the various stakeholders through meetings, learning workshops, hosting of business dinners and luncheons and other areas of collaboration for business development in Guyana.

The Chamber advocates on behalf of businesses to make sure all levels of Government are committed to removing red tape and implementing policies that will create an environment in which business can prosper.

The GCCI and the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine signed a Memorandum Of Understanding on Thursday, March 7, 2013 to help promote and encourage private sector participation in the school’s Master of Small & Medium Enterprise Management Programme.

Collaboration with Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business will allow GCCI to provide a regional and international forum for networking for its members and other members of the private sector; to establish links for members to collaborate with other businesses to improve the sustainability of their organisation and; to provide technical support and capacity building for its members.

The GCCI also has a Partnership Agreement with the University of Guyana (UG) to collaborate on a number of initiatives to foster a lasting input of the business community into the offerings and programming of UG and to ensure that UG graduates are prepared for work-life that contributes to national competitiveness strategies.

Stepping Up our Digital & Television Presence During the month of August, the Chamber revamped its website and launched a new, improved and mobile optimized website. The new website offers quick and easy access to relevant and timely information on the Chamber and it represents the Chamber’s objective and ongoing

efforts to increase its visibility. It also provides a great source of content for those looking to invest in Guyana.

This new website has a new domain (www.gcci.gy) and is sleek and stylish, boasting many new features in a bid to encourage user interaction. The website is also integrated to social network sites, such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and allows for information to be shared with a broader audience.

Other features of the site include a video and photo gallery, event calendar, membership directory and a vacancy/ employment section with listings from our membership.

The Chamber has also commenced the airing of its first weekly television programme called “The Chamber’s Business Review” on the National Communications Network (NCN), Channel 11 and Television Guyana (TVG), Channel 28. These two channels were selected because of their wide broadcast reach across the country.

The weekly 30 minutes programme is an informative television magazine intended to showcase the activities of the GCCI, featured interviews of eminent national, regional, and international business and academic leaders and the broadcast of our popular training seminars for the entire country’s benefit.

Publications The Chamber continues to produce publications to provide information to investors and the business community.

These include: 1) Business Guyana Magazine 2013; 2) Business Directory 2013/2014 and; 3) Competitiveness Manifesto: Top 20 Barriers to Guyana’s Competitiveness.

The Sponsorship participants of the GCCI have demonstrated their continued support of the Chamber’s mission of representing the voice of the business community in Guyana by making an additional investment in the Chamber each year. This ongoing investment provides the necessary resources the Chamber needs to be an active participant in providing programming that benefits the community. The additional support towards the GCCI allows us to continue programming that assists in keeping the Guyanese business community strong and for that we are thankful.

Financial Performance Despite the tripling of activities during the year 2013, the financial performance for the year ended 31 December 2013 remained favourable. Surplus for the year 2013 amounted to $6,483,787 while surplus for the year 2012 was $4,042,492 which marked an increase of $2,441,295.

The Chamber’s income for the year 2013 amounted to $41,331,576 while income for the year 2012 was $22,639,206 which resulted in a positive variance of $18,692,370.

Total expenditure for the year 2013 amounted to $34,847,789 while expenditure for the year 2012 was $18,596,714 which marked an increase of $16,251,075.

In closing, it has been an honour to serve in the capacity of Executive Director. With support and dedication from the Chamber’s Staff, Council, Members and other Stakeholders, 2013 was a year filled with important accomplishments.

Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry Ltd. GBTI provides an extensive range of services to its corporate and individual clients through its twelve (12) countrywide locations, since it is part of our mission to be the premier and preferred financial institution in our country.

Construction of 30,000 BBL Tank Base 240 Pile & Reinforce Concrete was completed in 23 Days

Gaico Construction Inc. continues to diversify from its main line of business (Construction of Roads & Structures) and invest in the market. Since its investment of US$3M in dredging and Marine Equipment in 2012, wharfs owners were able to maintain their basin to the required depth. The company also acquired a Brand New Asphalt Plant which will complement its efficiency in the Road Construction Industry.

We are committed to a Low Carbon Economy and contributing positively to the community and environment in which we operate. To this objective, we have embraced a role of environmental leadership

in all facets of our business, starting with the use of biodegradable disposable take-away containers.

Over the years, there has been mounting calls from our customers to replace our Styrofoam containers with a more environmentally friendly and healthier option (since Styrofoam contains cancer causing carcinogens).

We have responded to these appeals and threats to our environment with the introduction of environmentally friendly disposable soup containers and food containers.

Our soup containers are made from 100% biodegradable paper and are made of heavy-duty double poly

coated paperboard for durability. They are designed to withstand a range of temperatures, from freezing up to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

Our take-away food boxes are sourced from Caribbean Container Inc. utilizing their ECO PAK lines of environmentally friendly products.

The new containers are already being used in our New Market Street store.

} Mobile Money has the potential to change how business is done in the Guyanese market, since such transactions can now be done anywhere, anytime, using any type of mobile handset.

Mobile subscribers have embraced this technology as demonstrated by the steady increase in the thousands of persons using MMG monthly to buy Credit (C-Point), Pay Bills and Send Money across Guyana.

GT&T continues to be at the forefront of bringing to Guyana emerging and innovative technologies and services.

The technology is safely used around the world, and protected by a PIN (4-digit number) similar to a bank card.

The company in March 2012 unveiled its Mobile Money Service under the name ‘Mobile Money Guyana’ (MMG).

It serves by providing basic financial services to those not fully served by the current financial system. But, while MMG offers financial inclusion to the underserved, its offerings also serve banked segments who value the convenience and simplicity the service brings.

MMG’s network comprises 90 Agents in the ten administrative regions, and the second phase will see the launch of the Merchant Services, giving Guyanese the ability to use their mobile ‘wallet’ to shop at stores… over- the-counter, from work, home, or on-the-go.

In 2013, John Lewis Styles celebrated their 10th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the company made generous donations to several Non-Governmental Organisations, including: The Guyana Relief Council; Guyana Kids First Fund; NCN Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund; The Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre; The Roman Catholic Diocese of Georgetown; The Salvation Army and; Help and Shelter.

first digital fabric printing in Guyana Impressions has done it again! It has been the first to introduce digital fabric printing in Guyana. After the closure of Sanata Textiles Inc more than a decade ago, fabric printing was abandoned locally. Its new technology is ideal for printing and producing: flags, designer fabric, custom made curtains, branded sports uniform/outfits, chair and cushion covers, Clothing, vehicle upholstery, Soft Signage, Wall Wrap, and Specialty Uniform among others.

Since Impressions launched this new technology, about six months ago, it has done a considerable amount of work for large companies such as GT&T, Banks Beer, Coca Cola, Carib Beer, Ansa Macal, GBTI, Windsor Estates, Clear Water, Stag beer, the Government of Guyana using tear drop and/ or feather flags.

This technology adds to Impressions’ marketing flare since fabric printing compliments branding, an aspect of marketing that Impressions can boast of. To date, Impressions is the only company in the Caribbean that uses this heat fixation printing technology that produces conspicuous and colour vibrancy that with-stands even harsh weather conditions.

Every year the company seeks to invest in new technology in a bid to offer its customers satisfaction and a one-stop marketing experience.

Macorp continues to be a dynamic leader in Guyana’s development, by providing value added sustainable integrated solutions to the most important productive sectors of the nation.

In 2013 Macorp celebrated 20 years of being Guyana’s only authorised Caterpillar dealer by committing US$25,000 to social development with the signing a five year Memorandum of Understand (MOU) with the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) in collaboration with the Governments of Guyana and Canada through the CARICOM Education for

Employment Program – covering tuition materials & equipment for training from caterpillar to help to address the lack of trained professionals.

Their US$450,000 upgraded Providence Warehouse which now houses over 10,000 line items worth over US$4 million is now Guyana's largest Parts Inventory.

Putting customers first, Macorp opened a branch in Port Kaituma which is a prime, growing mining area; this allows them to provide easy access to services necessary for the country’s further development.

Accomplishments!

NowMail has aided the coordination of Emergency Disaster and Humanitarian Relief Effort for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in December, 2013.

On December 23rd, 2013, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Dominica and several other small islands experienced heavy rainfall which resulted in the eroding of many parts of the island. Many homes and livelihood were disrupted and the water systems, farming industry and, all other areas were brought to a halt.

We were invited by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints to use our management and shipping expertise to quickly provide aid to these people in the islands. Our team was very enthusiastic while they provided professional services to the humanitarian arm of the Church.

The shipments were successful and the governments of both islands were pleased that the Church and NowMail's efforts were very proactive.

We recently won a bid to deliver the Guyana Water Company Inc. water bills throughout Guyana. We are excited to embrace this venture as a team and we are ready to serve Georgetown, Essequibo, Berbice, Lethem, Bartica and Region 1. from January 2014.

On September 23, 2013 Scotiabank celebrated 45 years of helping its customers in Guyana become financially better off. A branch of The Bank of Nova Scotia headquartered in Toronto, Canada, the operations in Guyana were established in 1968. The first branch was located at Robb & Hinck Streets, Georgetown. Mr. Lloyd Austin moved the motion to close nominations and it was seconded by Ms. Patricia Bacchus.

Since there are only twenty one (21) seats on the Council of the Chamber (Rules: Section 19:1) voting papers and a voting register along with a locked ballot box were prepared by the Office of the Chamber (Rules: Section 19:3) to allow members to vote on the thirty (30) nominees for the election of the twenty one (21) members of the Council for the year 2013/2014.

On December 4, 2013, the Chamber’s Annual Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony celebrated extraordinary individuals and business organisations that make our economy and community thrive by honouring Guyana’s very best. The Guest Speaker of the esteemed event was Dr. Justin Ram, Director, Economics Department, Caribbean Development Bank.

Last year, two new awards were introduced, that is, the “Lifetime Achievement Award” which commemorates the outstanding achievements of members of the business community and the “Media Award” for the outstanding media coverage of the work of the Chamber and Business Community throughout the year.

President's Speech at the Annual Dinner & Awards Ceremony 2013 December 6th, 2013 at the Pegasus Hotel

Good evening and a hearty welcome to the Chamber’s signature event of the year our annual awards and gala dinner. It is a momentous and considerable honour to address you this evening as we gather to honour the best in Commerce and Industry in 2013. We also pay homage to an individual who over her lifetime has made a significant impact on the business sector in Guyana. We also give acknowledgement to the public sector agency and media house that have mostly facilitated and offered coverage, respectively, of the work of the Chamber in 2013.

The companies, agencies and individuals honoured here this evening all performed with exemplary distinction and are deserving of the accolades and adulation’s bestowed up them this evening.

This year we do something different and we pay tribute and appreciation to the important contributions made to the development of the Chamber over the past four decades by honouring all the past presidents who are still here with us today.

Ladies and gentlemen, As the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry heads into its 125th year of existence, I have the distinct honour to say that we stand on the shoulders of giants and we drink from wells of

opportunity that we did not dig. It is these gentlemen who are being honoured today who paved the way for the current level of success and prominence that the Chamber is enjoying. Tonight’s conferral gives thanks and appreciation to their sincere efforts of service to the Chamber directly and by extension the country as a whole.

Tonight, I want to assure all gathered here that the state of the Chamber has never been stronger and more robust.

Today the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a highly recognizable, respected and vocal nonpartisan champion of the interest of Guyana’s private sector and our nation as a whole. The Chamber seems to be everywhere these days; hardly a day goes by when we are not featured in the press one way or the other. Speaking of the media, who could forget the press coverage of the black eye and licking I got from a man 40 years my senior for the leadership of the PSC. The Guy throws a mean punch. Is Ronald Webster here tonight?

} 65 Even globally our presence is felt through our many publications such as the Business Guyana Investment magazine, The Business Directory, The Competitiveness Manifesto, and a very modern and up to date web-site, Facebook and YouTube presence.

This success has allowed the Chamber to be a staunch non-partisan advocate in favour of initiatives that enhance our country’s profile, competitiveness, and economic and social environment. This I promise you we will continue to do.

On television, we have a weekly programme called the Chamber’s Business Review where we broadcast our training seminars and feature interviews of prominent individuals and professionals on various issues affecting and relating to private sector growth and development.

Guests here this evening, many are cynical about the future of our nation based on the current state of affairs. As overcast as it gets, we must not lose sight of our national motto of “One people, One Nation, One Destiny.” In order to achieve our individual interests, it requires collective action.

“We are all caught in an inescapable web of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny” to choose the words of US civil rights activist Martin Luther King Junior. Tonight, I call on everyone here to recommit to the conviction of our national motto and work collectively to move our country forward to continued prosperity.

Our seminars and events continue to attract large number of audiences and we receive almost daily many requests from public, private and international organizations to collaborate on various events and initiatives.

Financially, the Chamber is one of the most, if not the most, self-sustainable civil society organization in the country. Due to the support of our members and initiatives of our various committees, the Chamber has been able to achieve record levels of income over the past few years and 2013 is shaping up to be the largest of them all. To that, please join me in extending a round of applause to our members and supporters.

Ladies and gentlemen, I will not be verbose and prolix since we have a packed programme. Export Earnings continue to Expand

Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh in his presentation of the Mid-Year Financial Report for 2013 announced that Budget 2013 projected an eighth consecutive year of real growth in gross domestic product (GDP), the domestic economy continued this trend of uninterrupted positive growth, with real GDP expanding by 3.9 percent, within which non-sugar GDP grew by 6 percent. Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying financial statements of The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry which comprise the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2013 and the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory notes as set out on pages 2 to 13.

Directors’/Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements The Directors/ Management are responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards. This responsibility includes: designing, implementing and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances.

Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. Incorporation and activities

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce was established in 1889. In 1982, by an Act of Parliament, the name was changed to Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

If the Chamber is wound up, every person who is a member at the time of winding-up, or has ceased to be a member within the twelve months proceeding the winding-up, shall be liable to contribute to the assets of the Chamber, for payment of the debts and liabilities of the chamber contracted before the time at which he ceased to be a member.

The objectives of the Chamber are:(a) the promotion and protection in Guyana of trade and services, local, regional and foreign; (b) to promote and encourage the development in Guyana of primary industries and manufacturing and processing

operations with the use as far as possible of local raw materials and expertise and the application of modern and

efficient methods of maintenance standards of safety and labour relations;

(c) to encourage adherence by manufacturers to proper qualitative standards in their products; (d) to promote within and outside Guyana by means of advertisement, trade fairs and in any other manner, the

consumption and the use of goods manufactured or produced in Guyana;

(e) to assist in the procurement of overseas markets for goods produced in Guyana; (f)

to collect and disseminate statistical and other information relating to commerce, trade, manufacture and

industry; (g) to use its good offices in the settlement of disputes involving members of the local commercial and industrial community;

(h) to consider all matters connected with trade, manufacture, industry and commerce and where appropriate, to make

representations and express an opinion or take a position on any such matters;

to initiate, promote or to comment on actual or proposed legislative, regulatory or administrative measures affecting

trade, manufacture or industry and to communicate or co-operate with the appropriate governmental institutions in

respect of such measures;

(j)

to encourage generally but more particularly among the membership, the adherence to ethical standards in trade,

manufacture, industry and commerce and to aid and support in any manner other associations or bodies having

objects similar to those of the Chamber;

(k) to amalgamate or affiliate with any institution having objects similar to those of the Chamber, and in the event of

an amalgamation to transfer the property of the Chamber to any such institution; and

(l)

to do all such things as may be requisite and necessary for the attainment of the objects of the Chamber, including

the receiving and donation of gifts, investing the income and funds of the Chamber and the borrowing of money.

2.

Accounting policies

(a)

Accounting convention

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention as modified by the

revaluation of fixed assets.

(b)

During the year new and revised standards, amendments and interpretations came into effect. There was

no major standards and amendments adopted by the entity.

None of the new standards, interpretations and amendments to standards is expected to have a significant

impact on the entity’s accounting policies.

(c) Fixed assets and depreciation

No depreciation is provided on freehold property.

The estimated value and useful life of the building is such that any depreciation would be immaterial.

Depreciation is charged on the straight line method at the rate of 10 – 50% on office furniture, fittings and

equipment.

Income and expenses are recognized in the statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income on

an accrual basis.

Contingent liability An application was made to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Local Government for the exemption from taxation and rates and taxes respectively.
