This alliance has to work In defence of DEAR EDITOR, I was one of the fiercest supporters of an AFC-led Broad Based Alliance (BBA) as explained by AFC Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan. In this regards, the terms of the recent Cummingsburg Accord has caused me some anxiety. However, after much consideration, this Accord, in its current construct, still emerges as a superior option than another term with Ramotar and Rohee. I continue to have absolute faith in Ramjattan as a principled politician whose only motivation has been the return to a path of social justice with economic empowerment for all. We all can learn from Ramjattan. I have known him for years and he has always placed the welfare of the people before his personal ambitions. I believe he has played this innings as best as he possibly could on a very sticky wicket for the team and the people of Guyana. Going it alone is not an option at this point. It
could mean five more years of the PPP corruption, crookedness and cronyism. If an APNU-led BBA can achieve the positive changes we all seek, then the choice is clear. When all the cameras are gone, every single Guyanese, like me, will have to level with our conscious in our private space and battle our fears because come tomorrow, we have to walk out that door and embrace the future. This alliance has to work! When black South Africans made the honorable compromise and embraced white South Africans who oppressed them for years inside the Mandela cabinet they did it for the country. As an outcome of those interactions, understanding rather than racial fear won the day. Shouldn’t we in Guyana have the same dreams and ambitions? This is not to say there are no political risks. But what are the alternatives? More unauthorized spending by
the Ministry of Finance? More rampant PPP-driven corruption? More poverty for the working class? Any rational mind has to be fully aware that this entire construct can unravel to the detriment and destruction of the AFC. But it is better to die on your feet than live on your knees under the unscrupulous and vindictive Jagdeo/Ramotar/Rohee cabal. The important challenge ahead is to market this Cummingsburg Accord to a nation divided by ethnic fears and brainwashed by their opportunistic political ancestors over the past 50 years, some of whom are still around on both side. But all in the BBA must now tell these dinosaurs; we need a break from the racial politics of the past. The Guyanese people have been misled for too long but we cannot give up hope. This BBA is yet another opportunity to try something different to achieve a
different outcome. Everyone needs to appreciate the leap of faith taken by the AFC. The objective is the banishment of African and Indian hegemony as practiced over the last 50 years in Guyana. It is time for the “all hands-ondeck” approach to mobilize and mould the nation to emancipate itself from its racist past. Can we do it? YES WE CAN! History will always remember men like Ramjattan who made the ultimate sacrifice to bring betterment for the people. Even under false attack and being called names like “PPP-lite” to “Indian racist” by lesser men, today Ramjattan stands vindicated as those lesser men bow their head in shame for gravely misjudging this Guyanese patriot who has again placed country first. My name is Sase Singh and I endorse the decision of the AFC to join an APNU-led Broad Based Alliance. Sase Singh
Professional begging now seems to be a career DEAR EDITOR, Under the caption “Man seeks the public’s assistance for his ailing wife” in Kaieteur News February 10, 2015 edition, I was surprised that a professional beggar had the gall to actually place a picture of himself and wife within this publication seeking assistance, when in reality this man is well known on the West Coast of Demerara as a beggar who refuses to work for a living. The claim of being unemployed is a farce since
Say no to corruption it, it hurts us all.
this man has been offered work but refused, instead he chooses a career in begging. Playing with the people’s emotions and sympathy is his game. The said article also mentioned that he sought assistance from Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (C.I.O.G) and is awaiting assistance. However, upon inquiry, CIOG requested proper medical documents that were not produced. CIOG is an institution that
assists many genuine persons. But this man who claimed he needs help did not produce anything to substantiate his claim of Chronic Retrovirosis and Ceretal Toxoplemosis since the only neurosurgeon in Guyana works at GPHC and Mr. Shaheed produce a paper which emanated from West Demerara Regional Hospital. The only logic I can see here is the doctor trying to assist the duo with an application for public assistance.
This document should not be used to prey on people’s sympathy since this husband and wife pair was seen many times in Parika walking and begging at stores on multiple occasions. His wife has not done a C/T scan to the head to substantiate the claim. His wife walks strongly besides him to beg daily. A businessman even provided video footage of their scheming ways. S. Clive Lloyd
DEAR EDITOR, I am simply amazed by the recent written attacks by Sean Devers against the legendary Clive Lloyd. In one of his articles, Sean Devers accused Lloyd of being senile. In my simple opinion, that statement was utterly disgusting, despicable and disrespectful. Lloyd’s credentials speak for themselves. He’s one of the most successful Test captains ever. His two World Cup victories at the helm still anoint him. Those accolades can never be tarnished. It would be remiss of me to allow Sean Devers to continue his attacks on the character of Clive without me defending him. I went to school with Clive Lloyd at St. Ambrose Primary located at Third and Light Streets, G e o rg e t o w n . We w e r e classmates for a brief period. Clive was responsible for me being selected to play my first match for the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) against East Bank in the Second Division competition. I was languishing at DCC before Lloyd returned in 1965. In my first game, I got 9/45 with my mediumpacers. Lloyd was ecstatic and I was humbled for if he had not intervened, I would not have made the team for some time. M r. D e v e r s h a s n o t shown the general public why it was so important to select Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard. They are both failures, who have continuously flattered to deceive. Their records speak volumes of their continuous failures.
If these two gentlemen were contributing meaningfully, we would not have been in the doldrums at number eight in Tests and about the same level in ODIs. We are superb in 20 overs - for that is the level of our team’s concentration. This format of cricket suits our bravado and showmanship. Anything over 20 overs is a complete disaster. The West Indies Board needs to start paying these players by their contributions. If they produce, they get an added incentive. The board also needs to employ a psychiatrist and psychologist to work along with this team, for there are many players of unsound mind who represent the Region. Education has a lot to do with it. Brain matter is an element in this team. These guys’ convulsions need entangling. We need to have a crescent spanner at all times in the dressing room. Now look at Roger Harper-a great cricketing brain who went to Queen’s College; Brian Lara-Queen’s Royal College; Jeffery DujonWoolmer’s College (Jamaica); Sir Frank Worrell-Harrison’s College. Education has always played a major part in sport. Last but not least, children need proper food in growing up. Proper brain food is essential. We have talent in abundance but the madness is perpetual. Ricky Lowe

Elderly Corentyne driver died from heart attack When 65-year-old Mohid Wahab died last Saturday after his truck crashed into the back of another vehicle, many thought that the accident happened when he fell asleep at the wheel. But a post mortem has shown that Wahab died from a heart attack. It is believed that this made him lose control of his vehicle. Wahab met his death when the truck he was driving slammed into the back of a parked lorry on the No. 56 Public Road, Corentyne. Wahab, who sells vegetables, was returning
- cops call on persons with serious ailments to desist from driving home at around 08.10 hrs after selling his produce when he apparently suffered the heart attack , lost control and slammed into the back of another lorry GMM 3455, belonging to Jagdesh Dewant of No. 56 Village. He was pinned in the vehicle and residents took a while to free him. He and Hemchand who was with him, were subsequently rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where Wahab was pronounced
dead on arrival. This has prompted some traffic ranks to caution persons with serious ailments and who may be on certain medications about driving. The police stated that are under severe constraints when issuing driver’s licences, the only two categories of persons they cannot issue licence to are persons suffering from epilepsy and those who cannot see further than 25 yards.
GYSM urges young Guyanese to exercise right to vote With elections just three months away, leaders from the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM) took to the podium at Stabroek Market square last Friday as part of the ‘Respect My Vote’ campaign of improving voter education. Among the speakers were A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) parliamentarian and Attorney-at-law James Bond, Chairman of the GYSM Ryan Belgrave and APNU activist and parliamentarian Annette Ferguson. Chairperson of the meeting, Kibwe Copeland, Junior Vice-chairman of the GYSM and a regional
councillor, encouraged all young Guyanese to come out in their numbers on May 11th and exercise their right to vote. “We fed up of Ramotar! We fed up of Rohee! We fed up of the PPP! And on Election Day we are going to go out and do something about it. We are going to vote them out!” the Regional councilor said as A Partnership for National Unity supporters, young and old, gathered in their numbers. Belgrave, a teacher by profession, touched on the surge of private schools in Guyana, at the expense of the very public schools that most voters rely on. “(Citizens), do
not vote for yourselves. Vote for your children, for the persons who cannot vote.” MP James Bond told the gathering “since 1992 we have been hearing how the PPP brought democracy back to Guyana. That they brought back prosperity to Guyana. After 2015, you (voters) can tell your children and grandchildren that you brought democracy! You brought change!” The GYSM has been in existence for over 50 years and has had Ryan Belgrave as its current National Chairman since August of 2014. It is acknowledged as the youth arm of the PNC/R.

Manslaughter charge recommended for civilian in fisherman beating death By Michael Jordan Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority Cecil Kennard has recommended that manslaughter charges be instituted against a civilian who allegedly beat fisherman Asif Rahim Khartoon, while the two were handcuffed at the Leonora Police Station. But the alleged assailant was released from custody prior to Khartoon’s November27, 2014 death, and police have been unable to locate him. Justice Kennard also said that he recommended that no charges be instituted against the police ranks who arrested the fisherman, since Khartoon’s wife was unable to identify the rank that she claimed assaulted him. “There is clear evidence he (the civilian) was the assailant. I recommended that he (alone) be charged with manslaughter,” Kennard told Kaieteur News last week. “In my view, if the policeman (who allegedly struck Khartoon) was identified, both the policeman and the civilian should be charged, but the policeman was not identified.” Kennard made the recommendations before sending the file to Crime Chief Leslie James on December 23, 2014. That document was subsequently sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on January 7. Kennard stressed that it is up to the DPP to make the final decision. It is unclear whether the DPP has completed her examination of the file. Kaieteur News understands that the civilian was arrested on November 22, 2014, after he allegedly paid a West Coast Demerara restaurant owner with counterfeit money. He was taken to the Leonora Police Station and handcuffed to Khartoon, who was detained on the same day. But the restaurant owner reportedly then told the police that he was unwilling to
- no charges for cops pursue the matter, and the civilian was subsequently released on cash bail. It was reportedly only after Khartoon succumbed, and allegations of assault were leveled against the police, that the restaurant owner and one of his female employees claimed that they had seen the civilian beating Khartoon while the two were handcuffed together. However, police were unable to locate the civilian at the address that he had given them. There are suggestions that the man went into hiding after learning of Khartoon’s demise. But the fisherman’s wife, Soorsattie Chandrapaul, alleged that she saw a police rank strike her husband on the back with “a long gun” after arresting him at his home. However, the widow said that the arrest occurred at night and she was unable to identify the police rank. She said she refused to participate in an identification parade on the grounds that she could not pick out the policeman. In the report sent to Justice Kennard, Khartoon’s wife allegedly stated that she heard her husband saying “police ah beat me”, and described the rank as being a “short, stocky man”. Khartoon, 38, of MetenMeer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, died on November 27, 2014, from injuries he sustained while in custody at the Leonora Police Station. A post mortem examination revealed that he died from multiple injuries to his head, face, chest and other parts of the body. While police suggested that the prisoner sustained his injuries at the hand of a fellow inmate, the dead man’s relatives claimed that police ranks inflicted the injuries. Police had stated that Khartoon was arrested shortly after midnight on November 22, 2014, following investigations into a report that he had assaulted his
Asif Rahim Khartoon reputed wife, Sursattie Chandrapaul. “During efforts to arrest him, Asif Rahim Khartoon resisted, but was eventually subdued and taken to the Leonora Police Station.” “At the station he made no complaints against the arresting ranks. At the Leonora Station, Asif was kept on the bench handcuffed to another man in custody whom he later reported had allegedly assaulted him,” the release stated. “Asif was subsequently taken to the Parika Police Station that Saturday where he was kept in the lockups. He was charged with assault and brought to the Leonora Police Station on Monday November 24, 2014, to attend the Magistrate’s Court.” Police stated that while at Leonora, the prisoner’s reputed wife reported that he was beaten by the police and as a consequence, he was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital which then referred him to the West Demerara Hospital. He was later released and was scheduled to appear in Court on November 26, 2014.” Chandrapaul said that when she visited her husband at the station the following day, she found him in a battered state, with his face badly swollen. After inquiring from the police about her husband’s condition, they told her that he had been beaten by other prisoners. However, Chandrapaul said her husband insisted that police ranks had inflicted the injuries. After being admitted to two West Coast Demerara hospitals and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Khartoon took his own discharge, then succumbed. Kartoon’s relatives have mounted numerous protests in their quest for justice, while also expressing concern at the length of time that it was taking for the investigation to be completed. Two police ranks were initially placed under close arrest.

Letters... Where your views make the news Stabroek News Women’s political participation is malicious is key to building democracy and misleading
— says Glenn Lall
Kaieteur News Publisher, Glenn Lall
Stabroek News Editor-in-Chief Anand Persaud
The decision by the Guyana Revenue Authority to settle the issue of the imported Lexus vehicles has been seen by Stabroek News as a test of the credibility of Kaieteur News Publisher, Glenn Lall. In its Sunday edition, the newspaper described the settlement as a “secret settlement” between the Guyana Revenue Authority and Publisher, Glenn Lall. Yesterday, Publisher Glenn Lall, who has been overseas for the past month, said that he was in no way involved from the beginning. “I never imported any vehicle; I never sought remigrant status and I was in no way involved in this issue from the beginning,” he said. He said that indeed he was critical of operations at the Guyana Revenue Authority during his pursuit of accountability and fair play in the national economic system. He said that his anticorruption stance caused him to release e-mails between the GRA and Government officials. And this was only done when he learnt that the government had planned to go after him for his position on corruption at the national level. Lall said that the attack by the government dates far back as some years ago. He said that even the deaf, the dumb and the blind know that the charges were trumped up against him and others. The e-mail exchanges with the government officials and the recorded conversations speak volumes, he said. “I was not surprised while sitting in the United States to learn that the
charges were dropped. It came as no surprise.” He said that for Stabroek News to publish what it did could only be a case of seeking attention and being downright wicked. It was misleading and malicious when it said that one of the vehicles was seized form Bhena’s Footwear and the other from Kaieteur News Saffon Street office, he added. The vehicles were seized from the residence of the remigrants. “For the Stabroek News to suggest that I was implicated in anything is nothing but wicked and malicious. When the settlement was reached I was out of the country and when the decision was handed down I was out of the country.” Mr Lall is still out of Guyana. He said that the evidence would reveal that he had nothing to do with any agreement with Guyana Revenue Authority. The vehicles were released to the remigrants, Narootandeo and Gharbassi Brijnanan, and not to Glenn Lall and his wife, both of whom were charged with tax evasion as part of the government campaign to malign him, he said. When the vehicles were released Lall was out of the country on personal business. He said that he would have nothing to ever say to Stabroek News, a newspaper he once respected both as a competitor and as a newspaper. “Stabroek News would do well to get to the source of the people who decided to drop charges against me and m y w i f e a n d n o t speculate about my involvement.”
DEAR EDITOR, Women are agents of change: We must advance the role of women in the area of politics in Guyana. I chose to discuss the challenges lying ahead for women in the upcoming presidential elections in Guyana. I am sure some may agree that fair and successful elections may be impossible to reach without the active participation of women. Women are, however, oftentimes encouraged to stay at home while their spouses, brothers and sons become actively involved in the political process leading up to elections and post elections. In Guyana women are often used in a more nondecision making areas during the campaign season. In this article I will share my concerns with you about the upcoming elections and the role of the women of Guyana. Women are approximately half or more of the population yet they hold less position than the males in our national government. They are still significantly outnumbered in the chambers of parliament, and they are often missing from negotiating tables where issues are to be resolved. All too often, important decisions that affect women, their families, and their societies are made without women having a voice. As we enter the season of campaigning, women must play a role in addressing the issues that affect them. While transparent elections are an opportunity for new leadership to fight corruption, improve security and human rights, reduce poverty, and to address social injustice, the women of Guyana must get involved. Women’s political participation, role in civil society, and government decision-making are key ingredients to building democracy. Democracy without the full participation of women is a contradiction in terms. It is a simple fact that no country can progress or prosper if half of its citizens are left behind. Involvement and progress of women and progress for democracy go hand in hand. It is therefore imperative that we, through “Concerned women of Guyana”, empower and educate women to advocate and make our elected officials accountable to us. We know that women’s participation is essential to addressing virtually every challenge we face as nations. Due to prescribed female roles, social barriers and few communication strategies,
women have less access to information. This affects women’s consciousness about their electoral role and judgment of presidential candidates and their obligations to us, who elect them. Women must not only be more engaged in governance, they must also be at the table in peacemaking, peace negotiations, and pre and post-election work. We know that without the voices of women contributing to the delicate process of building our country, best practice is less likely to take root. We should force our candidates to have a clear agenda on how they will reach every woman through addressing their needs and issues ranging from women’s health, women’s pay rate, domestic abuse, safety & security and mental health, all of which must be at the center of this campaign. Having said this, I would like us to take notice that women organizations are able to effectively mobilize their substantial constituencies. Women’s organizations have
traditionally conducted service provision and awareness-raising activities. In recent years, the capacity of women’s organizations to conduct advocacy campaigns has improved, but remains nascent. I urge the
women of Guyana to advocate, meet with their candidates, addressing their long tern needs and making commitments to the improvement of their lives and the lives of their families. Dr. Dawn Stewart

Kwesi ‘Ace’ Edmondson failed to defend his crown, as Jumo Primo emerged as the new soca king at the coveted 2015 Carib Soca Monarch competition. This weekend’s competition proved a clash of prowess as each of the 15 artistes vying for the 2015 title brought their “A” game to the National Park to impress both the crowd and judges. From fireworks to elaborate costuming to big mechanical cranes, contestants definitely managed to wow the crowd with their showcases. By the end of the spectacular showdown Ace copped the $500,000 second place prize while former Junior Soca Monarch Ernesta ‘Nesta’ Nelson secured third with her song “AIn’t Stopping”. Rounding out the finalist of winners was Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts. Meanwhile, new to the soca realm, Jory Hector, walked away with the Best Newcomer prize of $100,000 with his crowd whistling performance of “Whistle”. The competition kicked off around 23:00hrs, with patrons trickling onto the National Park tarmac, filling the venue close to capacity. At the show’s height, crowds reached to roughly 600 patrons, giving performers a
Best Newcomer Jory Hector performing sizeable energy to feed off of. Arriving on a tractor to jumpstart the show was Kwesi Ace, whose “Forking” performance was accompanied by farmers and forks to complete his agricultural motif. His showcase created a lot of hype for the crowd, even referencing the current political climate as an added spark of relevance. He also mentioned the difficulty his song faced on the airwaves as it was not permitted to regularly play on the radio. As the night continued, female performers like Vanilla, Lady T, Kemmy and Nesta definitely proved as opponents to be reckoned with.
Vanilla impressed the audience with her vibrant and literally high stakes showcase that had her swinging on a makeshift contraption above the crowd. But of the ladies it was Nesta who won the favour of the judges as her performance of “Ain’t Stopping” managed to still energise the venue even though she was the last. Her costuming also captivated eyes as it was considered an elegantly flowing Mashramani themed attire. While most of the competition steered away from bashing the other competitors, some still participated in the dishonorable behavior. Crowds did not respond kindly to Levar Gittens’ stunt involving a “Law and Order” mock up that targeted the other competitors. Members of the crowd even booed the performance for its tasteless charade. Another remarkable performer was Jory, whose whistle song had huge sections of the crowd blowing their whistles in support. This was the first time the usual dancehall artist and popular Sophia native, has entered the soca arena. He excited the masses with his militant back-up dancers ,engaging whistle blowing antics. By the time Jumo arrived on stage the audience was ready for a performance that was electrifying and nuance. Jumo incorporated styles of contemporary hip-hop and traditional Mashramani
elements. The performer even gifted the crowd with his signature dance moves, as he is also known as Jumo ‘Rubber-Waist’ Primo. Moments after emerging as the champion, Jumo related that he lost two days of sleep in preparation for the event and was ecstatic that his hard work paid off. The new Soca King spent days campaigning across the country to garner support for his song “Unruly”. Jumo believes that he won the competition due to his dedication, ambition and policy to stay away from bashing other performers during the finals. “For the last three years artists been coming up and bashing other soca artists in the competition and I don’t understand why,” related Jumo, “it is not a dancehall or rap battle. This is being broadcast worldwide and you don’t want people to see Guyana in that kind of light.” The artist commended Carib for choosing a clean performance that was injected with energy. He even said that he found the semifinals to be a better experience since artists were focusing on producing top notch performances rather than bashing the competition. “In order to build the music industry artists should keep recording,” said Jumo, crediting his victory to his versatile approach towards music. To that end, Guyanese can expect the “biggest and baddest” band come Mashramani Day from the Soca King.
Activists protest outside Digicel HQ... From page 16 has ended, and has the customer unknowingly paying for a still active service. “I am certain that 100 percent of Digicel’s consumers do not know how to calculate exactly when their data plan is expired and how much is being deducted after the expiration,” stressed Craig. For the future, Craig hopes that his demonstration will influence a change in policy on the part of Digicel Guyana. The activist clarified that he has no problem with Digicel’s pricing, as he respects the company’s freedom to charge for their service. However, Craig emphasised that the company is not free to take money from customers without their consent. He proposed a simple solution to the problem would be to inform consumers via a message that their plan has ended, therefore allowing them to decide how they want to continue with the service. Meanwhile, Kissoon voiced his support for Craig’s protest action while he too
feels that corporate companies like Digicel are abusing their position in various ways. According to the newspaper columnist, yesterday’s protest action was meant to bring the public’s awareness as to how corporate companies work. He further said that even companies like Republic Bank Guyana take advantage of their users as he cites that they have an “ineffective” mailing system when corresponding with their client base. “Both of these companies (Digicel and Republic Bank) are allowed to do this because they don’t have a Trade Union body in a country that also has an inactive Consumer Rights Association,” related Kissoon, “these pickets are meant to bring out the rights of the consumer to the public.” Kissoon also continued to say that he does not see Digicel fulfilling their corporate responsibility to the disadvantaged Guyanese public. The social activist elaborated that the company
is more seen promoting sports and music events rather than helping the less fortunate. Responding to this claim, Digicel Guyana’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gregory Dean, affirmed that the company does indeed fulfill its corporate responsibility, and has publicised it regularly. “I don’t understand his demands, as Digicel has always publicised its role in being socially responsible to the public,” Dean said. “I do not think that these claims are true. In fact he can check our track record and see that we have fulfilled these duties.” Dean added that Kissoon cannot accuse Digicel of not conducting their corporate duty. “If he is not aware of our work, then what are we to do?” asked the CEO. In addressing Craig’s concerns of overcharging customers, Dean informed that Digicel is aware of the problems arising from their data plan policy and they are looking into rectifying these concerns.

Sri Lanka president arrives in India on first foreign trip Sri Lanka’s new president arrived in India yesterday on his first foreign trip in office, trying to rebuild ties hit by tensions over growing Chinese influence on the strategically located island. Maithripala Sirisena landed in New Delhi for the four-day trip aimed at allaying Indian fears over China’s influence on the island that strengthened under President Mahinda Rajapakse’s decade-long rule. Sirisena, who defeated Rajapakse in a presidential election last month, was due to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, and will later be guest of honour at a banquet. Sirisena, accompanied by his wife Jayanthi Pushpa Kumari, waved to waiting
media before being greeted at the airport by India’s junior minister for shipping P. Radhakrishnan. India has long considered Sri Lanka to be within its strategic sphere of influence. But China ploughed huge sums into Sri Lankan infrastructure projects, becoming the country’s biggest foreign financier and enjoying significant political and even military influence under Rajapakse. Critics say China is trying to develop facilities around the Indian Ocean in a “string of pearls” strategy to counter the rise of its Asian rival India and secure its own economic interests. “A first visit is always an opportunity to set directions. President Sirisena will be
Iran former vice president jailed for corruption TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s former first vice president has been taken to jail to serve his prison term for corruption, the official IRNA news agency reported yesterday. Mohammad Reza Rahimi, a top aide to former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was convicted by Iran’s supreme court last month and sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay a 10 billion rial ($300,000) fine. The court also ordered Rahimi to pay compensation equivalent to some $800,000. IRNA said police agents took Rahimi from his residence Sunday and brought him to Evin prison, north of the capital Tehran. The semiofficial Fars news agency said Rahimi was convicted of “acquiring wealth through illicit methods.” A local court had initially sentenced Rahimi to 15 years but the supreme court reduced the term to five years and three months Rahimi, who once served as the head of an anticorruption agency and received the medal of honor from Ahmadinejad, is the highest-ranking former
Mohammad Reza Rahimi Iranian government official to have been convicted and jailed in Iran’s history. Ahmadinejad had claimed he led “the cleanest government in Iran’s history” but his opponents had long accused his governmnet of massive corruption. Ahmadinejad’s successor, moderate President Hassan Rouhani, criticized widespread corruption in the country in unusually blunt terms in December, saying that bribes once paid secretly are now being paid openly and vowed to fight the phenomenon.
welcomed warmly in Delhi,” India’s foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told reporters ahead of his arrival. “We expect substantial talks, we expect outcomes in terms of agreements, in terms of frameworks, and in terms of announcements.” Sirisena is expected to try to secure greater Indian investment in Sri Lanka, which said last week it was seeking an international bailout of more than $4.0 billion. Sirisena will also travel to the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Bodh Gaya and a Hindu temple in Tirupati further south tomorrow before leaving on Wednesday. (AFP)

Ukraine rebels disavow ceasefire at encircled town (Reuters) - Ukraine’s rebels disavowed a new truce yesterday hours after it took effect, saying it did not apply to the town where most fighting has taken place in recent weeks. Guns fell abruptly silent at midnight across much of eastern Ukraine in line with the ceasefire agreement, reached after a week of
diplomacy led by France and Germany. But pro-Russian rebels announced they would not observe the truce at Debaltseve, where Ukrainian army forces were encircled and Kiev military said rebel attacks on the town steadily increased from mid-afternoon yesterday. “Of course we can open
Islamic State releases video purporting to show beheading of 21 Egyptians in Libya (Reuters) - Islamic State released a video yesterday purporting to show the militant group beheading 21 Egyptian Christians kidnapped in Libya. In the video, militants in black marched the captives, dressed in orange jump suits, to a beach. They were forced down onto their knees, then beheaded. The video appeared on the Twitter feed of a website that supports Islamic State. A caption on the five-minute video read: “The people of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian church.” Thousands of Egyptians have travelled to neighbouring Libya in search of jobs since an uprising at home in 2011, despite advice from their government not to go to one of the most dangerous countries in the region. Before the killings, one of the militants stood with a knife in his hand and said: “Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for.”
fire (on Debaltseve). It is our territory,” senior rebel commander Eduard Basurin told Reuters. “The territory is internal: ours. And internal is internal. But along the line of confrontation there is no shooting.” A statement by the Kiev military last night said the “enemy” was carrying out attacks with varied types of weapons, including Grad rocket systems, and had a plan to try to seize Debaltseve from the west. In a four-way telephone conversation with the leaders of Germany, France a n d R u s s i a ’s V l a d i m i r Putin, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the position of the four at peace talks last week in Belarus had been for a ceasefire on all the front lines including at Debaltseve. Poroshenko stressed that a withdrawal of military equipment and heavy weapons required a “full and unconditional” ceasefire under the Minsk agreement, his press service said. The Organization for
Members of the Ukrainian armed forces are seen not far from Debaltseve, eastern Ukraine yesterday. REUTERS/Gleb Garanich Security and Cooperation in Europe, responsible for monitoring the ceasefire, said rebels had denied its observers access to Debaltseve.
Both sides blamed what firing there was on the enemy. But Debaltseve has been the focus of fighting for weeks, and it will be hard to speak of a truce if Ukrainian
troops remain trapped there under fire, or the rebels press on with their advance. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday’s peace deal including the truce must be i m p l e m e n t e d “unconditionally”. But he made no mention of whether Moscow believed the truce applied to Debaltseve.

China opposes extending Iran White House says Congress shouldn’t sidestep Islamic State measure nuclear deadline: Minister
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javid Zarif (right) and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi hold a press conference in Tehran yesterday. (AFP Photo/Atta Kenare) China is against another extension of the deadline for Iran to reach a deal with world powers in talks on its nuclear programme, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Tehran yesterday. “They have been extended twice, we hope that they will not be for a third time,” Wang said at a joint news conference with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. Wang said the talks between Iran and the P5+1 powers (the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France plus Germany) were a “historic opportunity” to resolve the longstanding dispute over Tehran’s nuclear efforts. “The negotiations have seen positive progress,” he said, but “they have become more difficult and complicated” as they near conclusion. Two deadlines for a permanent agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme have been missed since an interim deal was reached in
November 2013. Negotiators are now working toward reaching the political outline of a deal by March 31, with the cut-off point for the technical details of a comprehensive accord by June 30. Western powers accuse Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapon — a charge Tehran denies. Disagreements in the
talks centre on the extent of nuclear activities Iran will be allowed to continue and the timetable for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear efforts. Zarif also said “the opportunity must be seized” for a deal and said Iran was ready “to show flexibility to reassure the P5+1 group”. (AFP)
(Reuters) - White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough yesterday said the Republican-led Congress should not sidestep the president’s request to formally authorize military action against Islamic State forces, saying lawmakers must not “take a pass”. Under President Barack Obama’s orders, the U.S. military has carried out air strikes against Islamic State forces in Iraq and Syria since last summer but has done so without explicit authorization from Congress. Obama sent a formal request to Congress on Wednesday but ran into immediate resistance both from Republicans who want stronger measures and from many of his fellow Democrats wary of another war in the Middle East. Despite differences that could make passage of a resolution difficult, McDonough said: “What they shouldn’t do this time is what they did in 2013, when they took a pass on this issue.” Congress can change the language in the proposed resolution, he said, but not avoid action altogether. “They need to take a position, to say what they are for and what they are against
Denis McDonough on this,” McDonough said on CBS’s “Face the Nation”. “It’s very important in questions of war and peace for Congress to be heard.” Obama has defended his authority to lead an international coalition against Islamic State since Aug. 8 when U.S. warplanes began attacks in Iraq. The formal request he sent last week, which would cover the next three years, eased criticism of Obama’s failure to seek the backing of Congress, where some accused him of exceeding his constitutional authority. In 2013, Obama sent draft
legislation to Congress for authorization to use military force in response to the use of chemical weapons in Syria’s civil war. Ten days later he asked Congress to postpone the vote while he pursued a Russian proposal for international monitors to take over and destroy Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons. The vote in Congress was never held. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, speaking on the “Fox News Sunday” program, said “it’s too early to predict” whether Congress will pass authorization legislation for the fight against Islamic State. Boehner said House Republicans plan “exhaustive hearings” on the matter. “The president is asking for less authority than he has today under previous authorizations. I don’t think that’s smart,” Boehner said. Republican Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, also speaking on CBS, said “robust” hearings were planned in the Senate. Obama’s plan does not authorize “long-term, largescale ground combat operations” such as those in Iraq and Afghanistan.

WICB Four-Day Franchise Cricket
Bishoo spins Jaguars to another win By Sean Devers in Antigua In Association with Western Union, John Fernandes Ltd & Meet Your Match Dating Service On a day blessed with glorious sunshine, a laborious batting display by the Leeward Islands Hurricanes only delayed their inevitable defeat against
tournament leaders the Guyana Jaguars on the penultimate day of their sixth round West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Four-Day Cricket Franchise match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium yesterday. The Hurricanes scored just 47 runs from 40 overs of which 22 were maidens and lost two wickets in a battle of attrition in the extended two
Four boxers for Barbados tourney A four-man team of boxers would be representing Guyana at this year’s Horace Phillips Memorial boxing tournament scheduled for March 14 in Barbados. Guyana Boxing Association president Steve Ninvalle said that team Guyana would be made up of four boxers and one manager/coach. In addition, the team would be accompanied by a local referee/judge. According to Ninvalle the GBA Coaches Commission has been tasked with submitting a shortlist of fighters for the competition to the executive during this week. The local team is expected to depart for Barbados on March 13 and return two days later. The Horace Phillips Memorial is an annual tournament held in March in Barbados in honour of a former Liaison Officer of the Barbados Boxing Association who died 20 years ago. The tournament attracts fighters from across the Caribbean. Over the years Guyanese boxers have dominated the competition and just last year returned home with a five medals. Clairmont Gibson, Ron Smith, Delon Charles, Diwani Lampkin and Michael April allowed Guyana’s flag to fly high at the last tournament held at the Springer Memorial School in St Michael. Lampkin, Charles and Smith secured gold medals, while Gibson and April collected silvers.
and a half hour first session as night watchman Quinton Boatswain (18) and Sherwin Peters (46) added 48 for the second wicket in 150 minutes. The last pair of Gavin Tonge (46) and Jeremiah Louis (17*) then featured in the second highest last wicket stand by the Leewards against Guyana of 65 to fall nine short of Kenny and Winston Benjamin’s record at Bourda in 1989 to rally the hosts from 135-9 to 200 all out. Devendra Bishoo captured 6-82 from 30.1 overs to claim his 13th five-wicket haul at this level and move to second on the wicket takers list in the tournament with 30 scalps, while leading wickettaker Veerasammy Permaul moved to 43 victims by grabbing 3-57 from 29 overs yesterday. Set 73 for their fifth win in six matches, the Jaguars reached 73-2 to win by eight wickets with over a day to spare after losing Rajendra Chandrika (7) and Skipper Leon Johnson, who made 36 from 50 minutes with six fours and a six off Rakeem Cornwall before he tried the finish the contest with consecutive sixes and swiped a catch high to short third man to give Cornwall his eighth wicket in the one-sided contest.
Opener Vishaul Singh batted with a level head to end undefeated on 22 from 77 minutes, while Narsingh Deonarine (4) was the other not out batsman for the Jaguars who extended their lead in the six-team tournament after six rounds. Scores: Hurricanes (139 & 200), Jaguars (267 & 73-2). Earlier, the Hurricanes, needing 128 to make the Jaguars bat again, resumed the day on 36-1, 92 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat and the overnight pair of Peters and Boatswain, who took 62 balls to score his first run, survived for two hours and 12 minutes yesterday before Boatswain’s vigil ended to break the 48-run stand. After quiet period, Peters, who out of nowhere, straight drove Raymond Reifer to move from 32 after spending 77 minutes on 28, but the two men and a dog in the stands were fast asleep and missed the shot as the Jaguars bowlers started to show signs of frustration as the Hurricanes continued to score at pedestrian pace and brought up their 50 from 38 overs in 143 minutes. A succession of maidens were bowled, Bishoo was introduced and after being hit
for a boundary by Boatswain, had Boatswain caught under the bat for a dogged 18 from 131 balls and 150 minutes as the Jaguars finally reaped success at 76-2. Bishoo quickly induced Montcin Hodge (1) to edge to Johnson at slip as the Hurricanes slipped to 80-3 just before Lunch. By the interval the 24-year-old Peters, who hails from the Island of St Maarten, was unbeaten two short of his second First –Class fifty with his team on 83-3 still 45 runs short of making Guyana bat again. After Lunch Devon Thomas, who has played 21 ODIs looked positive and sweetly drove Deonarine through cover for four before going after Bishoo and dumping him one-bounce to the mid wicket boundary but when on 20 he provided Bishoo with his 27th wicket of the tournament to leave the score on 104-4. It was soon 106-5 when Permaul seemed a bit fortunate to trap Peters LBW for 46 from 170 balls, 238 minutes with eight fours, while Jahmar Hamilton (3), Rakeem Cornwall (0) were both removed by Bishoo as the Leewards lost two wickets for four runs to slump to 119-7, while Permaul got rid of Akeem Saunders (21) and at 135-9, the contest was expected to
be over before Tea. But like in Jamaica when the last pair put together a Jamaican record last wicket stand of 84 and the best partnership in the first here was 33 by the last pair, the Jaguars again struggled ‘polish off’ the innings after doing all the hard work to remove the top order batsmen cheaply. Tonge went to work on the hapless Jaguars bowlers with a murderous onslaught and got excellent support from Jeremiah Louis as they belted the ball to all parts of the ground on a track which offered prodigious bounce to the spinners to put together 65 in 30 minutes. To n g e clobbered Bishoo for three sixes and cleared the boundary twice off Permaul before he was left stranded by Bishoo for Anthony Bramble to complete the stumping leaving Louis unbeaten on 17 from 57 minutes and 44 balls. The team will get an extra rest day today before leaving for Barbados tomorrow where they face the Barbados Tridents in the seventh round from Friday as they move closer to claiming their seventh Regional title and first since 1998 when they shared it with the Leewards.
