Ruel Johnson also needs an investigation, in the Coen Jackson sexual episode DEAR SIR, “Indeed, it would be a sad day for the young females students, when male teachers, who are supposed to be a father figure and a role model, can within their thoughts start mentally undressing a female at 14 years of age. Then over the next two years, begins a conversation of course about schooling, but with the basic aim and ulterior motive of fulfilling his sexual and lustful desire, once the age of consent is attained16 years”. Such a person is sick mentally, to the extent of mental derangement and Satanic. Can our society and education system, which is short of qualified teachers, allow an individual to determine whether a student passes or fails, if the female doesn’t give into sexual requests? In the same breath, the entire educational background of that student would be affected, since she is being placed under tremendous mental strain. Meanwhile Cultural Policy Advisor, Ministry of Education, Ruel Johnson comes over as the “hero” for highlighting the issue on social media, the disclosure publicly in the print media and
to the Chief Education Officer. But how long was Johnson aware of Jackson’s ongoing? Was it a c a s e o f J o h n s o n ’s annoyance that Jackson, was still in contact with a female acquaintance of the former, resulting in the disclosure, due to his position of influence and contacts, as being touted by the latter? If, so then the Cultural Policy Advisor, comes over as a “villain” that holds him accountable, also. Why should or would someone know of a situation, which will have adverse effects on a student’s welfare, resort to withholding it as a “trump card” then releasing it at his own discretion, when he is personally affected? Is this how a professional behaves? Can it be construed that this is Guyana, where the “impossible becomes possible” with the “web of deceit, being spun conveniently”? Finally, apart from the Ministry of Education, via its Minister issuing a public statement, what of the Guyana Teachers’ Union and the Teaching Service Commission? By the way is the Headmistress of Bishops High School a parent and a mother? How would she have
reacted if one of the alleged victims was her daughter, or a relative of hers? Surely, Jackson would have had his “b….,” roasted! Editor, when our so-called figure heads in society with their foolish comments are upbraiding young females openly, it is senseless. Should their places in society still be upheld with Decency, High esteem, Honour and Religious principles? With Coen Jackson, who is now on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, innocent until proven guilty a reprimand for the Headmistress, is totally unacceptable. Would there be a sanction or a reprimand for Ruel Johnson, if accepting to Jackson’s contention offer one iota of truth? Why should Johnson resort to antagonism, in having carbon copies being dispatched to Ministers, Public Security and Social Cohesion respectively and not the Social Protection? Would allegations of same sex relationships (both male and female) inclusive of teachers and students be subject to an investigation, along with female teachers preying on under age “macho” male students? Partisan politics must not be countenanced DEAR EDITOR, There is a moral responsibility to speak out about the painting of state properties in any party colours. This practice would have been unacceptable under the PNC, PPP/C and it is under the APNU+AFC. The painting of state properties in the shades of the green and yellow of the coalition cannot be countenanced. Society is cognisant of the clamour for the separation of party and state/ government’s business and this is not without merit. The state/government has to function as a non-partisan unit and all-inclusive as prerequisites for welding the diverse forces together and ensuring the rights and opportunities for all. This is a fundamental responsibility of government and in the execution of governance. The party or group elected to government must govern in the interest of all and recognise that state properties are not theirs but belong to all the people. When in office they are custodians of the people’s properties and for the period
of occupancy they must ensure proper upkeep. You cannot desecrate state properties by painting them in partisan colours. These properties are acquired for the benefit of all the people and are maintained with the tax dollars of all the people, which cuts across party lines. The problem is not only seen on buildings and fences but also furniture as in the case of a school in Victoria, East Coast Demerara where the benches have been painted in green and yellow. Government and their supporters must engage in acts to earn the respect and confidence of the people and this painting programme is divisive and counter-productive. As the coalition paints Office of the President, State House, etc in its colours it needs to take note that the PPP/C has political control of some Regional Democratic Councils, Town Councils and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils. Should the PPP/C decide to paint the public properties in the areas with its party colours, the coalition and supporters will condemn the action. This would be the right thing

to do but its application must be across the board, not partisan. As the coalition moves to renegotiate the Cummingsburg Accord the partners must visit this issue and state their position in black and white. The presence or absence of law does not make something morally and ethically acceptable. Slavery was considered legal. It was and remains morally reprehensible and wrong. Whether the National Trust Act or any other Act is silent or vocal on the colours a building can be painted, what is more important and must be respected, is the moral and ethical law of neutrality and welding the nation’s people together. A green economy or Guyana going green is not about painting the people’s properties in green or only planting trees. A green economy is an economic policy that seeks to pursue development (cultural, political, social, civic and economic) consistent with protection of fundamental rights and freedoms and the environment via sustainable approaches. The society awaits Government, in partnership with stakeholders, developing a structured national programme to give effect to this policy. Lincoln Lewis
Kudos to the government and Brian O’Toole DEAR EDITOR, Among the many good that this incumbent coalition Government and Ministry of Education has done for the children of this country and also future generations of children is the removal of Value Added Tax on education. The parents have requested the removal, they have also protested peacefully with their placard but most of all Dr. Brian O’ O Toole, an expatriate of this land has done the most in his determined and relentless determined for the removal of
this additional burden on parents for their children for quality education. I met Dr. O’Toole some time in the late 60’s when he came for a visit to our country and he told me with a kind of determined meaning and feeling that he would be coming back to this country. Dr. Brian O’Toole has done what he said to me and also done more. He brought h[s family—his charming wife and two brilliant sons. There are many parents, I am sure, who would like thank him and his family for what they have done for them and
this country continued development. It was a sacrifice for generations to emulate. The School of the Nations is a first among equals when it comes to quality all round education ie primary secondary and tertiary . Well done Brian and Pam. I trust that both of you are on the list of national honors for this country which I now recommend, if it has not yet been drawn to the attentions of those who are responsible ie the powers that be! Yours sincerely, Rooplall Dudhnath
An historical and systemic look at the slave trade in Libya today DEAR EDITOR, For over 500 years SubSaharan Africans have been victims of brutal exploitation in some form or another on a continuous cycle to present day. It started with Arabs, Indians and Europeans and now this exploitation has transformed into a complex systemic approach where blacks are exploiting themselves along with almost every major countries and corporations worldwide. The Arabs traded slaves across the Sahara desert into modern day Middle East and castrated them, therefore turning blacks into disposable commodities. The Indians traded slaves from East Africa to the West Coast of India as fighters and slave labor and we all know the Europeans traded slaves to the Americas to work the plantations of which we are descendants of. According to Walter Rodney, in his canonizing book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”, the slave trade was rooted in economic dominance driven by European global control of which they enjoy to this day. And a disastrous spin off is the concept of racism, which was created by white people to place themselves as better people over others and of course we know that this is pure nonsense. The shocking images of my black brothers and sisters being auctioned and sold in Libya is a culmination of three main factors; the desire to have a better life in Europe, the destruction of Libya and Europe’s push to stop
migrants coming to their countries. Again like Rodney said, it all spins on the axis of economics and distribution of wealth. The majority of SubSaharan Africans have been living in perpetual poverty and despair ever since white people set foot on that continent 500 years ago with the sole intention to rape Africa of its wealth and oppress its people. After Africans gained their so-called independence, the White superpowers used Indians, Arabs and other Africans to maintain economic exploitation that resulted into numerous civil wars and genocides on scales that dwarf the Jewish Holocaust. Therefore, this backdrop sets the stage for African wanting a better life in Europe, just like the migration taking place on the Mexican – US border. Libya spans the largest borderline along SubSaharan Africa and the Mediterranean Sea that leads to Europe. And its current state of anarchy is perfect for trafficking. The sad state of Libya today is by design and careful planning by the USA and Europe. They both have a vested interest to kill Gaddafi and take control of Libya’s oil and other resources. Gaddafi was hard to
control and he wanted to move away from the US Dollar as a backed currency and go to the gold standard since Africa has the largest deposits. He further wanted a stronger African Union with a monetary union, like that of the Euro currency. Libya is now void of an effective Government and rule of law; the country is in total lawlessness littered with Warlords who were armed by the US during the fight against Gaddafi. In this environment, the Africans are being smuggled in route to Europe. The third factor is Europe’s desire to stop the flow of Africans to their shores. It can be argued that Europe is benefiting from the slave trade in Libya because it deters the migrants. News reports have shown Africans stating that the UN is paying the Warlords for holding the migrants in detention camps where they are being beaten, murdered and traded as slaves for an average cost of US$450. The sad part is that the final decision to kill Gaddafi and destroy Libya was made by a black man named Obama. Of course he was acting on the orders of the powers that be. These are the same powers that control the Guyanese Government. Malcolm Watkins

We ran from the bullets; I don’t want to return DEAR EDITOR, Though only seven years old when we immigrated to Canada, the thought of revisiting my homeland, Guyana, has never suggested itself since departure. When I allow myself to consider why, I realize that I have intentionally suppressed every opportunity for it to return, even with the knowledge that the visit would be temporary. The idea alone invites flashback upon flashback, all unpleasant. I still remember that night so vividly—it was 3:00 am, October 14th, 2002. Bullets from every angle, shattering the peace of the night as
window panes crashed inwards and bullets became our bedmates. I remember barely daring to open my eyes, dreading the damage. My father lay on the ground helplessly, his arm the picture of carnage. Next to him, a pistol, shell casings spilt across the floor. I watched as my mother, a strong, competent woman of the subcontinent, cry as she ran to help him. Thankfully the next morning brought the light of good news. My father would survive his injuries. As my father began to recover in the following days, one thing became overwhelmingly clear. Our
family could not remain in Guyana. Typical of the country, the shooting was never properly investigated and no charges ever made. Canada presented itself as an idyllic refuge for immigrants to seek a better life and raise children. This migration to North America is how my law journey began. I’m often asked “why law school?” Why this career, that requires long hours and essay upon essay and research until you’re bleary eyed, when there are so many other options. The answer has always been simple though. I have a responsibility, as a son and as a victim of a blatantly ignored act of violence, to honour the incredible sacrifices my parents have made and contribute to the prevention of mishandled and unprosecuted cases. My parents worked 14hours a day and seven days a week when we first moved to Canada. Their sacrifices have been endless, all to allow me to pursue my dreams. Beyond that, no matter how cliche, seeking justice for individuals that receive little to no assistance and are often marginalized has always been a worthy cause to me. A scathing criticism of Budget 2018 DEAR EDITOR, The goose is getting fatter but the most vulnerableour poor, our women, our youths and our unemployedin our society are not being adequately addressed in the 2018 Budget. They have never even begun the ‘good life’, how can they ‘continue the journey’? The 2018 Budget is now $267.1 billion, more than 20.5% increase over the 2016 Budget and 7.1% over the 2017 Budget. In his presentation our Finance Minister seems to be in a haste to get to the juicy aspects of the Budget—the huge allocations which would mask his inability to deal with stimulating the economy and job creation. While the 2018 Budget is 7.1% more than last year, the old age pensioners get a paltry 2.6% increase from $19,000 to $19,500, while the Public Assistance beneficiaries get an increase of 6.6%, moving from $7,500 to $8,000. It must be noted that these increases are the smallest ever despite the promise by this Government to give significant increases. The only areas where there has been ‘significant’ salaries’ increases are their own, which ballooned by over 50% in 2015 after just a few months in Government and despite complaining that there was no money in the Treasury. The PPP Government was giving up to two thousand
dollars or more increase in some instances to the old age pensioners with free water and electricity. This went a long way to ensure that old age pensioners could have afforded to upkeep their homes. It is becoming increasingly clear that these people will be unable to keep their property and must ‘will’ it prematurely to their children. This will make them even more vulnerable and at the mercy of their children in some cases. The ‘fat cats’ in Government continue to enjoy their ‘super salaries’ and other tax free benefits while the poor and needy is now being thrown two loaves of bread! What is even more ‘significant’ is the fact that more and more workers are driven into unemployment, especially in the sugar belt, while thousands of young people are joining the unemployment lines having graduated from high schools and the University of Guyana. This will get worse by next year since the 2918 Budget has little to offer in terms of job creation. The Budget speaks about youths attaining ‘the skill-set training that is required for the job market’ and the investment of $1.7billion towards this, however, how many job opportunities are there to accommodate these youths? How many of them will become entrepreneurs involved in ‘salt fish processing, block making, lemon grass planting and harvesting, cash crop farming, chicken and pig rearing, food preservation, catering and hospitality? The number of youths
benefitting from these will definitely represent only just a small fraction of those unemployed. The sum of $1.7 billion is just not ‘significant’ to take care of the thousands of unemployed youths. The Minister has miserably failed in addressing this endemic problem. What is even more appalling and pitiful is the fact that thousands of sugar workers will be unable to even send their children to school so while $41.9 billion will be spent on education some children will be unable to access it. The PPP/C Government was giving each child a cash grant of $10,000 and this was expected to increase to $20,000 in 2015. This should be reintroduced to assist these poor parents to send their children to school. While the 5Bs initiative is laudable, the $10,000 cash grant should be reintroduced. It should have never been taken away. In conclusion, a big Budget without investments to generate revenue, create jobs and take care of the poor and needy is wasteful spending especially when the corruption comes in to playthe sole sourcing, the awarding of tenders, the certification of works and the drawbacks and the kickbacks. When all of these are taken into consideration it will be seen that the ‘fat cats’ will get fatter and the value for money from the $267.1 billion Budget will dissipate into thin air. The ‘fat cats journey to a good life’ will definitely continue! Yours sincerely, Haseef Yusuf Regional Councillor

Oil and Gas Sector…
Locals will not be left out in the cold By: Kiana Wilburg Local businesses can be assured that they will not be left out in the cold when it comes to the looming oil and gas sector. In fact, the Ministry of Business is working feverishly to ensure that these businesses will have access to many opportunities. This was confirmed recently by Business Minister, Dominic Gaskin, while speaking of his Ministry’s role in the oil and gas sector. Gaskin told Kaieteur News that the Ministry of Business’ role is primarily facilitative; whether it is to facilitate investors and or investments and improvements in doing business, specifically as it relates to streamlining processes that impact businesses through reforms. “However, we have a strong interest in ensuring local businesses are not drowned out, that they develop capacity to meaningfully participate in the industry, whether directly or through spin-off activities (which are likely to be far greater than the direct activities related to the oil and gas industry); and that the more vulnerable category of business (micro and small enterprises) access these opportunities as well.” To this end, Gaskin said that the Ministry of Business is certainly a key stakeholder in the development of the nation’s local content policy, the scope of which is broader than oil and gas. He insisted that the document is engaging the Ministry’s attention. He said that the Ministry of Business has to ensure sustainable growth for local businesses. “And so we have to identify areas where that will take place and to implement the corresponding policy interventions needed to encourage optimization of economic activities that are connected to this sector.” LOCAL CONTENT POLICY It is very likely that come year end, Guyana will have in place, a robust Local Content Policy for the oil and gas sector. This is according to the nation’s “optimistic” Natural Resources Minister, Raphael Trotman. Trotman reminded that the Government has retained the services of world-renowned expert, Mr. Anthony Paul. The Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC) noted that Paul was keen on completing and having distributed for consultation, the first draft policy. Trotman expressed, “The idea for this is that we could not move to legislation with-

Business Minister, Dominic Gaskin out first having a policy. Legislation should follow policy rather than the reverse and so it was thought that we should craft the policy before 2020.” The Parliamentarian added, “Paul, who was away for a few weeks, has returned and in September last, he held consultations with various members of the Private Sector along with others across the region. He has resubmitted another draft taking into consideration the new views and ideas shared by stakeholders.” The Natural Resources Minister said that the “updated” draft is expected to be shared with the public soon. “And hopefully by the end of the year, we will have a national Local Content Policy that we can all sign on to.” CRITICISMS Be that as it may, Guyana’s draft local content policy has been criticized in recent months for lacking provisions which would safeguard against exploitation by companies. The draft speaks nothing of how to avoid procurement fraud, conflict of interest and favouritism among other crucial areas. Instead, the draft Local Content Policy framework seeks to address, the suite of opportunities that may arise and the approaches to be taken in selecting and developing opportunities related to enhancing the capabilities of Guyanese nationals and businesses. The Policy articulates that this will be don’t through; training, development and employment initiatives (Capacity Development), ensuring availability of ownership participation for qualified Guyanese equity interest (Ownership Value), supplier development provisions for goods and services by locals
A mini health check is the first step to donating blood
to support sector operations (Local Content); and well-tailored social contributions for greater impact and benefits (Societal Benefits). It also describes what will be done to ensure that the activities in the petroleum sector are conducted in a manner that transparently secures the maximum benefit for the people of Guyana, while recognizing the limitations of the country and holding all actors accountable to the present
and future generations of Guyanese who are the owners of the nation’s petroleum resources. Additionally, the draft policy recognizes that the petroleum resources of Guyana belong to all its citizens, and represent an asset of significant intrinsic value, which once removed diminishes the wealth of the nation, unless there is transformation in value from resources below the ground to improved qual-
ity of life above it for current and future generations of Guyanese. The draft says, “Guyana will approach the development of its petroleum resources, people and businesses in a pragmatic, transparent and accountable manner. This will be conditioned by existing circumstances and an analytical approach to understanding the resource, the activities it engenders and our input capabilities. We shall pursue strategic opportunities for local capacity development and participation that give us the
maximum possible benefit now and in the future.” The Policy also states that Guyanese will participate in a manner that gives preferred access and opportunities to improve and enhance the country’s capabilities so that it can become internationally competitive and in the end, the country will progressively provide a greater amount of future services. Capacity development, to enable more value retention, will be treated as an investment, rather than a cost, the policy outlines.

Govt. explores framework for transfer - as some politicians voice of skills in oil sector fears of foreign domination By Abena Rockcliffe-Campbell The government is not oblivious to the concerns of Guyanese who think that there is an attempt by Trinidadians to impose themselves on the shaping of this nation’s embryonic oil and gas sector. However, the government is also taking into consideration the fact that Guyana has much to learn and that the country is expected to honor and respect the spirit
of certain treaties and agreements. That is the position articulated by Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman during a recent interview with this newspaper. Trotman was told about the concerns of many Guyanese on the issue. Also, this newspaper quoted Trotman’s predecessor, Robert Persaud who noted that Guyanese were treated with scant respect by Trinidadians, who are now
expecting to be welcomed with open arms. Trotman said, “We have to be careful, but we are a member of Caricom. We are also part of the Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME). Guyanese are benefitting from Guyana being a member of CSME when they find themselves in places like Trinidad, Barbados and Antigua; that is a consideration that cannot and should not be ignored.” Trotman noted that Cabinet last Tuesday agreed to
the renewal of the Framework Agreement for the deepening of bilateral cooperation between the governments of Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. The Framework Agreement was signed between the two parties in August 1999 in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and was valid for ten years initially, then renewed for five successive periods, but was never enacted. It was during the meetings on the margins of the 28th Inter-Sectional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), held in February 2017 that President David Granger and Trinidad’s Prime Minister, Keith Rowley agreed to give effect to the agreement. The renewal will now be for a further ten years and provides for bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, agro-processing, petroleum extraction, fisheries and the environment. A high-level commission comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Trade of both countries or their identified alternatives will oversee the implementation of the agreement. Trotman said that this will strengthen the relationship between the two countries. Further, he said that within this agreement there will be a mechanism to provide for the transfer of skills for the benefit of Guyanese. “It has been suggested that there be a proper framework for training and the movement and transfer of expertise,” said Trotman. The Minister said that the issue will

also be considered with the construction of the local content policy. Via commentary on his Facebook page, Persaud had opined that the discourse on, and direction of Guyana’s oil and gas development framework must not be driven nor dictated by the Trinidad and Tobago experience, or any other singular case. He said, “It seems recently many of the non-governmental discourses or conversations have had a strong TT fragrance. I know the record will show that I signed an MoU on collaboration for oil and gas with TT (as was and is being done with other bilateral and multilateral partners) but this was not to be a gateway for TT domination rather it was about mutual cooperation.” Persaud added, “Guyana must do what’s best for Guyana and Guyanese as we develop a new sector learning from the best (and TT does not fall into this category) examples and experiences.” Persaud was also quoted
in sections of the media saying that recent history has shown that the Twin Island Republic has been less than welcoming in their approach to facilitate Guyanese business, but now project an air of ‘entitlement’ for Guyana to do likewise. “For instance, I recall, as Agriculture Minister, the battles we fought to get Trinidad and Tobago to import some of our agricultural produce even when the region’s extra-CARICOM food import bill was US$4 billion, annually,” Persaud, who served as Minister of Agriculture prior to taking up the natural resources portfolio, said. Interest from Trinidadian companies in business opportunities in Guyana has skyrocketed. A large business delegation from the twin island visited Guyana in June seeking partnerships in the oil and gas sector and other supporting industries. Trinidadian personalities have also been featuring prominently in ongoing public discussions on oil and gas in Guyana.
Teacher accused of sexual misconduct arrested - released on $100,000 bail, lodges passport Embattled teacher, Coen Jackson who is at the center of allegations of sexual misconduct was arrested on Saturday. He was released on $100,000 bail after he was questioned by ranks at the Brickdam Police Station. Kaieteur News understands that the teacher visited the Brickdam Police Station, accompanied by his attorney after a female came forward with accusations against him. This newspaper was informed that a formal report was made by a former student of a school at which Jackson previously taught.
The complainant, now 22years old, is said to have alleged that she had sexual contact with the teacher while she was still a student of the school. The incident is said to have occurred at Durban Street, Lodge between December 2010 and May 2011. The 39-year old teacher denied the allegations and was placed on bail. He has also lodged his passport at the station. Jackson, an Economics teacher attached to the Bishops’ High School, was sent on administrative leave after allegations of sexual miscon-

The government needs empathy Sometimes you have to ask yourself whether senior government officials live in ivory towers. You want to know whether they have lost touch with the common man. You want to plead with them to come out of their offices and feel the pain that is out there. People are hurting in this country. A new entrant to Guyana’s public service wrote a letter in the Kaieteur News of last Friday expressing her hurt at not being eligible for the announced increases in public service wage increases because she was not employed until February. If she had nailed the job two months earlier, she would have been entitled. The government should not be doing these things. Jagdeo would never have done that. He would have sat down and found the money to pay all the workers a retroactive increase. He did it for all the years he was President. There is no reason for the government to be getting technical when it comes to wage increases. It is not as if they are paying people a fortune. An eight percent increase on the minimum wage does not add up to much. So it is not as if the government is paying a jewel and crown. Why therefore not pay everyone who works in the public service the increase? Why stipulate that those who were employed in 2017 are not eligible? If this is true something is radically
wrong. Which government waits until December to announce that they will laying off workers in the sugar industry? How these workers are going to enjoy the Christmas season, knowing that at the end of the holidays, their pains will increase; bread will be taken out of their mouths. Government ministers need to walk the streets and talk to the common man. They need to come down to the level of the people and understand what is happening in this economy. There are persons who are being employed in the government. They are coming out of school with passes in their examinations. So why is it that they now have to be retrained for one year before they can get an entry level job in the government? All those subjects that those young people wrote do not count for art because they still have to go to a public service training institute to be trained, for one year, guess at whose expense? If someone has the relevant academic subjects, they should be put to work. This idea of having them trained for one year sounds a bit like a return to the days when office workers used to have to be trained at ideological colleges, forced to go and do manual labour and participate in political events. Why should any ambitious young person want to waste a whole year being trained to work in the
DEM BOYS SEH
public service, when for years young people have been coming off the streets and taking up public service appointments without any problems? The work there is not rocket science. There are many young persons who are finding jobs within the government. Yet there are others who claim to be more qualified who are saying that they are not finding the jobs. Part of the problem is that the government is lowering the bar. There was a time when you had to have five subjects, including Mathematics and English, at one sitting, before you could get a job in the government. Then the bar dropped and persons with four subjects were being allowed to advertise. So it was possible for someone with four subjects to come out with a job while the one with ten did not get it because the extra subjects which were done did not count for any extra score in the interviewing process. No person should be accepted in the public service unless they have five subjects at one sitting, including Mathematics and English. We need to raise standards in Guyana not lower them. The University of Guyana needs to upgrade itself. It should do like the U n i v e r s i t y o f t h e We s t Indies and only accept persons with A level passes. This will solve a lot of the u n i v e r s i t y ’s problems. You will have a smaller university with

Labourer stabs wife to death, hangs self in Corentyne home
DEAD: Indrawattie Totaram
A quiet Sunday afternoon ended on a gruesome note when a 36-year-old GuySuCo labourer stabbed his common-law wife to death before hanging himself in the couple’s one bedroom home at Lot 26 Third Street, Williamsburgh, Corentyne, Berbice. Dead is Krishna
Latchman, 36, commonly called ‘Jooks’ and his wife of ten years, Indrawattie Totaram, also called ‘Sabrina’, 40, a labourer at a gas station in Port Mourant. Police said that Totaram was found at around 18:00 hrs with multiple stab wounds on a blood soaked mattress in the home, while Latchman
was found hanging in his underwear from a rope tied to a beam. The suspected murder weapon was later found near Totaram’s body. According to the source, it appears as though there was a fight between the couple which resulted in Totaram receiving several stab wounds about her body. Latchman also had a stab wound to his right foot. Information gathered also revealed that Totaram had left Latchman and eloped with a young man, but returned home some two days ago. Roget fed up of PNM: T&T in for a rough ride

Scrap PSC, let voters decide top cop Trinidad Express - Scrap the Police Service Commission (PSC) and give consideration to the election of a Commissioner of Police (CoP) and the deputy commissioners of police by the country’s electorate. These are among the recommendations of the Cabinet appointed Police Manpower Audit Committee, which was mandated to conduct a police manpower audit. The report of the committee, which was chaired by Prof Ramesh Deosaran, was laid in the Senate last week. The report noted there were “strong views” on the inefficiencies and ineffective-ness of the current PSC system.
Trinidad Guardian - Two years later, a union that rooted for the PNM to win the 2015 election is now taking a back step. The Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM) says it has had enough with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and his Cabinet. Members of the trade union who held a candlelight vigil on Friday evening had a message for the Prime Minister. Scores of protesters gathered at Mandela Park, before making their way to the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair. JTUM President Ancel Roget said “As the one who requested the job to lead the country and to give us good governance and today we are seeing the most amount of ungratefulness unleashed on the people.” The Prime Minister was not the only one who was criticised; no one in the Government was spared. Roget said the people of this country had had enough. “He raised gas prices once, there was no riot, he raised it again, there was no riot, he raised it a third time and he’s expecting no riot. Well, if he was looking out for riot, let us not disappoint the Minister of Finance,” Roget said. He said the union was on a forward campaign seeking justice for all.

LONDON (Reuters) Half of Britons support a second vote on whether to leave the European Union and a third said they would be worse off financially outside the world’s largest trading bloc, according to a new opinion poll. The poll, published in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, found 50 percent of people supported another vote on the final terms of Britain’s exit deal, 34 percent rejected another referendum and 16 percent said they did not know. The newspaper said it was the first major opinion poll since last week’s media reports that Britain is preparing to pay about 50 billion euros (43.79 billion pounds) to help to pave the way for talks on a future trade pact with the EU. The poll found 35 percent of those surveyed said they would be worse off financially after Brexit, while 14 percent said they would be better off. The online poll, carried out by research firm Survation, interviewed 1,003 adults in Britain between 30 November and 1 December. Mike Smithson, an election analyst who runs the www.politicalbetting.com website and a former Liberal Democrat politician, said on Twitter it was “the first time any pollster has recorded backing” for a second Brexit referendum. Since the referendum in 2016, high profile opponents of Britain’s exit - from French
Tony Blair President Emmanuel Macron, to former British prime minister Tony Blair and billionaire investor George Soros - have suggested Britain could change its mind and avoid what they say will be disastrous for the British economy. Blair told the BBC yesterday that Britain could change its mind about leaving the EU. “It’s reversible. It’s not done until it’s done,” he said. Blair said what the government was seeking to negotiate was not possible. “They are trying to negotiate getting out of the single market while recreating all of its benefits,” Blair said. “That’s not going to happen.” Survation said it carries out polls for media organisations including the BBC, Sky News, the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian.

Doha (AFP) - Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad AlThani will attend a crucial summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council this coming week, Doha’s foreign minister said yesterday. Speaking at a forum, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said Qatar’s leader had accepted the invitation to attend, amid the region’s worst political crisis in years. “I will attend the ministerial council tomorrow and the emir will attend the summit,” said the minister. He added that Qatar had not yet seen the summit agenda, but the current crisis would be discussed at the meeting. “It is important that the GCC system remains alive,” said the minister. The emir received an invitation from Kuwait at the end of last month to attend the GCC summit.
It was the first such invitation during the ongoing and increasingly bitter Saudiled diplomatic boycott of Doha. The summit will start on December 5, the six-month anniversary of the start of the crisis. It was unclear who would represent the other members of the GCC at the gathering. On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt abruptly cut all ties with Qatar over accusations Doha supported extremism and was close to Shiite Iran. Qatar denies the allegations. Since the beginning of the crisis, all diplomatic communication between Qatar and the boycotting countries has been stopped. Founded in 1981, the GCC is a political and economic union that includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as Oman and Kuwait.

Security cameras, body scanners Trump tweets about Russia probe for Magistrate, High Courts in 2018 spark warnings from lawmakers WA S H I N G T O N (Reuters) - A series of tweets by U.S. President Donald Trump about the investigation into contacts between his 2016 campaign and Russia prompted concerns yesterday among both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham saying Trump could be wading into “peril” by commenting on the probe. “I would just say this with the president: There’s an ongoing criminal investigation,” Graham said on the CBS programme “Face the Nation.” “You tweet and comment regarding ongoing criminal investigations at your own peril,” he added. Yesterday morning, Trump wrote on Twitter that he never asked former FBI Director James Comey to stop investigating Michael Flynn, the president’s former national security adviser - a statement at odds with an account Comey himself has given. That tweet followed one on Saturday in which Trump said he had fired Flynn because the former national security adviser had lied to the FBI. Trump’s attorney, John Dowd, said in an interview with Reuters that he had drafted the tweet and said putting it together had been a “mistake.” “I’ll take responsibility,” Dowd said. The series of tweets came after a dramatic turn of events on Friday in which Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors delving into contacts between Trump’s inner circle and Russia before he took office. Legal experts and some Democratic lawmakers said if Trump knew Flynn lied to the FBI and then pressured Comey not to investigate him, that could bolster a
President Donald Trump
James Comey charge of obstruction of justice. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she believed the indictments in the investigation so far and Tr u m p ’s “continual tweets” point toward an obstruction of justice case. “I see it most importantly in what happened with the firing of Director Comey. And it is my belief that that is directly because he did not agree to lift the cloud of the Russia investigation. T h a t ’s o b s t r u c t i o n o f justice,” Feinstein said on
NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The president knew he (Flynn) had lied to the FBI, which means that when he talked to the FBI director and asked him effectively drop this case, he knew that Flynn had committed a federal crime,” Adam Schiff, ranking Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told the ABC programme “This Week.” The Russia matter has dogged Trump’s first year in office, and this weekend overshadowed his first big legislative win when the Senate approved a tax cuts bill. Flynn was the first m e m b e r o f Tr u m p ’s administration to plead guilty to a crime uncovered by special counsel Robert Mueller ’s wide-ranging investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 U.S. election and potential collusion by Trump aides. Russia has denied meddling in the election and Trump has said there was no collusion. Comey, who had been investigating the Russia allegations, was fired by Trump in May. He told the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee in June he believed his dismissal was related to the Russia probe, and said Trump asked him to end the investigation of Flynn. “I never asked Comey to stop investigating Flynn. Just more Fake News covering another Comey lie!” Trump said on Twitter yesterday. On CBS, Graham criticized Comey, saying he believes the former FBI director made some “very, very wrong” decisions during his tenure as FBI director. But Graham also said Trump should be careful about his tweets. “I’d be careful if I were you, Mr. President. I’d watch this,” Graham said.
Security measures for Court houses to be beefed up in 2018. Security measures at various Magisterial and High Courts around the country will be taken to the next level in the New Year. According to information detailed in the budget estimates for 2018, provisions will be made for the installation of security cameras for the Judges’ quarters and the Berbice Sub Registry. The cameras are expected to enhance security at these locations. Provisions are also being made for the expansion of CCTV system at the Georgetown High Court to accommodate the Family Court and Georgetown Land Court Building. According to the estimates, the Court is expected to acquire counterfeit currency detectors which will be distributed for Vigilance , Vreed- en- Hoop, Whim, Suddie , Fort Wellington and Lethem Magistrates’ Courts. In some cases, the currency counter will
replace unserviceable ones. There are also provisos for three body scan walk through detectors for the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Court of Appeal and the Berbice Sub Registry. This initiative, expected to cost some $15M, will increase security checks at the various Court locations. There have been moves by the State to enhance the state of Guyana’s Judiciary. In 2018, the rollout of the human resources and e-judiciary database is expected to improve efficiency and faster disposition of cases. The Supreme Court has been approved to spend some $256.8 million to undertake the initiative in 2018. This initiative comes at a time when there are continued concerns about the backlog of cases engaging the court system. According to the budgetary plans of the
Supreme Court, the EJudiciary systems will allow for court documents to be filed, served, tracked and extracted electronically. It is also expected to allow Judges, magistrates and other judicial officers to be better equipped to handle the scheduling of cases, undertake case management and allocate hearing dates for cases in a timely manner. This is expected to reduce delay in hearings and reduce backlog. Additionally, lawyers and litigants can file cases and submit documents for court online and have access to the status of their cases. “The overall administration of Justice will be improved and enhanced,” according to the Judiciary work plan. The system is expected to be based in Georgetown. Further, there are plans to equip more jurisdictions with PA systems, cameras, microphones, projectors and screens.

Suspect in Bouterse murder trial appears in commits suicide
Desi Bouterse
Ruben Rozendaal
PA R A M A R I B O , Suriname - CMC – Ruben Rozendaal, one of the codefendants in the mass murder trial involving Suriname President Desi Bouterse, has died, after allegedly committing suicide by bleeding to death following a cut on his left arm. A doctor who examined Rozendaal, whose body was recently found in his apartment in the capital said that the death of the 61-yearold man was due to blood loss. Rozendaal appeared in court on October 30 where the military prosecutor, Roy Elgin, had sought a 10 yearjail term for the former army officer. According to the prosecutor, Rozendaal had participated in the planning and extra judicial killing of 15 political opponents of the
then military government on December 8, 1982 that was headed by Bouterse. Elgin argued that there was a script for the December murders and that the former army officer had played a specific role. The prosecution argued that his role was to collect two men, one of whom, former sports minister André Kamperveen, was executed at the then military headquarters Fort Zeelandia. Rozendaal was also the army officer who had blown up and set ablaze the head office of Suriname’s most powerful trade union at the time, De Moederbond. The prosecution said it was seeking the 10-year jail term because of his cooperation. Following the court hearing in October, Rozendaal, who said he had
expected to be acquitted, became very emotional, insisting that as a soldier he was merely following orders. “I’m not going to be able to bear this, it hurts and maybe I have to sacrifice myself so that society will believe that Rozendaal didn’t participate in the planning and was not present during the killings,” he said in an interview with journalists on October 30. “And no one should blame me, it will be my will,” he added, alluding to his suicide. Exactly one month later, his lifeless body was found with his left arm slit with a razor blade. The prosecution is seeking a 20 year jail term for Bouterse and the five codefendants, but has indicated that it would seek an acquittal of the 10 others. The “December Murder Trial” with Bouterse as the main suspect began on November 30, 2017. A total of 25 former military officers and civilians were charged with the murder of the 15 men that included journalists, military officers, union leaders, lawyers, businessmen and university lecturers. There is growing speculation here that the sentencing could be made in mid-2018. Since Bouterse became the President of Suriname in elections held in 2010, he has tried several times to stop the trial.
Jamaica condemns slave trading in Libya
KINGSTON, Jamaica CMC – TheAndrew Holness led administration has condemned the acts of slave trading reportedly taking place in Libya. In a statement during the sitting of the Upper House on Friday, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Senator Kamina Johnson Smith said the government is committed to working with the international community to curtail the “despicable trade in human beings, wherever it occurs around the world.” She said the United Nations, along with its member states must continue to publicize and educate citizens of the existence and different forms of modern day slavery and its consequences, especially on the most vulnerable. “We encourage all countries to take the necessary measures within their borders to identify
Kamina Johnson Smith and eliminate this abhorrent practice, and in this regard, we note and welcome even with caution announcements emerging from the African Union/ European Union Summit in Cote D’Ivoire…where specific actions are to be taken to
address the situation of migrants of Libya,” she said. In the meantime, Senator Johnson Smith said even as the acts in Libya are condemned, Jamaicans should also focus their outrage and offence on issues occurring locally. “Modern day slavery is not limited to the inhumane treatment of African migrants on the continent. It includes the young girl in rural Jamaica answering an advertisement in the paper promising on the job training in customer service, who finds herself forced into prostitution or threat of death if she seeks to run away. “(It also) includes the young boy who lost his parents and is taken in by a member of a neighbouring community but who is made to work seven days per week, not attend school, not play, and he is given little food or drink, but an abundance of beatings,” she added.

U.S. quits talks on global migration pact over sovereignty clash UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States has quit negotiations on a voluntary pact to deal with migration because the global approach to the issue was “simply not compatible with U.S. sovereignty,” said U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. In a statement released late on Saturday, the U.S. mission to the U.N. noted that President Donald Trump made the decision. “No country has done more than the United States, and our generosity will continue,” said Haley, whose parents are immigrants from India. “But our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone.” “We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country,” she said. Trump campaigned last year on a promise to deport large numbers of immigrants and build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico to help tackle illegal immigration and crime in the United States.
Since he took office in January, he has also moved to ban U.S. entry by people from select Muslim countries. With a record 21.3 million refugees globally, the 193member U.N. General Assembly adopted a political declaration in September last year in which they also agreed to spend two years negotiating the pact on safe, orderly and regular migration. Former U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration backed the resolution, known as the New York Declaration, which also asked U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi to propose a global compact on refugees for adoption in 2018. “The global approach in the New York Declaration is simply not compatible with U.S. sovereignty,” Haley said. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regretted the U.S. decision, his spokesman said yesterday, but expressed hope the United States might reengage in the talks.

Woods struggles as bogeys slow his comeback (Reuters) A troublesome start dominated by bogeys proved costly for Tiger Woods as he struggled to a three-over par 75 in the third round of the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Saturday. After two strong rounds put the former world number one in contention for his first win since 2013, Woods recorded four of his five bogeys in the first seven holes to slip to 10th at fourunder 212, 10 strokes behind leader Charley Hoffman. Wo o d s , i n h i s f i r s t tournament in nearly 10 months following spinal fusion surgery, said he had some bad breaks on Saturday and that his game was better than his scorecard suggested. “Anything I did right ended up in a bad spot, then everything I did wrong, it was really bad,” Wo o d s told NBC television.
“I’ve got to keep fighting and that is one thing I have always done in my entire career. That’s keep fighting and try and post the best number I possibly could. “I really didn’t feel I was that far off. That’s the crazy part ... I just ended up in bad spots after good shots.” Only in the closing five holes, where Woods twice had birdies and narrowly missed a third at the last, did the 41-year-old show he could again be a factor at the elite 18-man event that features eight of the world’s top 10. “It feels good to be out here fighting again,” he said. “I’ve missed the fight and getting out there and competing, fighting against the golf course and the guys. “It’s so much fun.” Breezy conditions made sub-par rounds difficult at the Albany course with

overnight leader Hoffman one of the few to deliver, surging to a five-stroke lead after a birdie at 18 for a two-under 70 and a 202
total. Jordan Spieth (72) and England’s Justin Rose (71) were tied for second at
nine-under 207, one stroke ahead of Italy’s Francesco Molinari (71). The troubles for
Woods started early on Saturday as he took bogeys at the first and third holes before further miscues at six and seven saw him post a four-over 40 for the front nine. That contrasted sharply with Friday when he took nine shots less to finish the front nine. “The shot that really threw me for a loop was the shot at three,” Woods said. “I hit the most beautiful three wood that went 300 yards in the wind.” But he wound up with a bogey. Woods finally picked up a shot at the 14th, doffing his hat to the crowd in relief, before carding another birdie at the par-three 17th. “ I t ’s r i d i c u l o u s , ” h e said. “It took me 14 holes to make a birdie. At that time I had already played four par-fives and nothing happened.”
Weightlifting: Egypt and Colombia New Zealand inflict another collapse... take gold, hosts U.S. make podium ANAHEIM (Reuters) - Egypt and Colombia took the titles on day five of the weightlifting World Championships while Mattie Rogers was one of two medalists for the United States on Saturday. Harrison Maurus also climbed the podium for the hosts, the 17-year-old setting a youth world record of 193 kilograms in the clean and jerk on the way to third place in the men’s 77kg. Rogers became the first American woman to win a World Championships medal since Cheryl Haworth in 2005, and Maurus the first male medalist since Wes Barnett in 1997. “I’ve heard of Wes Barnett, I think I may have met him, but I was not aware it had been that long,” said Maurus, who like Rogers is a
former gymnast. “I adjusted my technique in the snatch in the build-up to these championships, which made a difference, and it was always in the back of my mind that I could win a medal here.” Rogers, 22, finished third in the women’s 69 kg class behind Leidy Solis of Colombia. Solis won with a 239kg total ahead of Albania’s Romela Begaj (235kg), who served a two-year ban after failing a doping test at the 2014 Worlds. Rogers also lifted 235kg. Mohamed Ihab, who became Egypt’s first Olympic weightlifting medalist since 1948 in Rio last year, won the men’s 77 kg class with a 361kg total ahead of Rejepbay Rejepov (352kg) of Turkmenistan and Maurus (348kg).
Alpine skiing - Weirather wins World Cup super-G as Vonn crashes out (Reuters) Liechtenstein’s Tina Weirather’s won the season’s first World Cup super-G race at Lake Louise yesterday as American Lindsey Vonn, the all-time biggest winner in the discipline, failed to finish after crashing for her second time in three races. The 28-year-old Weirather, who was last year’s super-G crystal globe winner, barrelled down the icy course in one minute 18.52 seconds on a chilly day in the Canadian Rockies to wrap up the North American swing of the World Cup tour. Second place went to last year’s Lake Louise super-G winner Lara Gut (1:18.63) of Switzerland while the event’s
reigning world champion Nicole Schmidhofer (1:18.79) finished third. Vonn failed to complete the race at Lake Louise, dubbed “Lake Lindsey” due to her long history of success on the course, after she failed to keep her skis under her when taking a wide turn, resulting in a slide out. The 18-times World Cup race winner at the venue crashed hard with four gates to go during Friday’s downhill and tied for 12th in the second downhill race of the season on Saturday. While Vonn had a nightmare weekend at Lake Louise, it was a different story for fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin.
The slalom specialist, who shocked the skiing world by following up her first ever podium finish in the downhill on Friday with a win in Saturday’s race, finished fifth (1:19.36) in yesterday’s superG. The 22-year-old Shiffrin ends the three-day swing through Lake Louise with the women’s overall World Cup standings lead with 510 points, 174 ahead of Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg. With two months to go until the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the women now head to St. Moritz, Switzerland, for an Alpine combined event and three super-G races on Dec. 8-10.
From page 31 motion. Having begun the day on 79, Brathwaite had progressed without incident into the 90s, as New Zealand rested their frontline quicks so they might be deployed only after the second new ball became available. Even before the 80th over rolled around, however, Brathwaite lost his wicket. Having nudged a legside Mitchell Santner delivery to the fine leg boundary, he misjudged the pace of the very next Santner delivery, and it brushed his back pad before it hit his bat. The ensuing lbw appeal was turned down on the field, but the batsman was given out upon review. Only 17 runs had been added to the overnight score at that stage. Then, from the 86th over, came the rapid collapse. Shai Hope, whose innings had been defined by its reticence, was dismissed playing a defensive shot - a Boult lifter finding his outside edge, then Kane Williamson’s hands in the gully. Roston Chase, who had hit Boult for consecutive boundaries to get his innings under way, did not last long following Hope’s exit, insideedging a wide Henry ball on to his stumps. West Indies went to lunch with five wickets remaining, but New Zealand needed less than an hour after resumption to close the game out. Debutant Sunil Ambris edged de Grandhomme to wide slip, first ball after the break. Then, next over, Shane Dowrich slashed Wagner to point - it was the first ball Dowrich had
Tom Blundell began rapidly on the third morning after New Zealand decided to bat on ©Getty Images faced in the session. The tail was in no mood to resist. Kemar Roach, Jason Holder and Miguel Cummins were all out in the space of 28 balls. What was particularly disappointing for the West Indies was that the pitch had long since begun to favour batsman, and though the second new ball offered the New Zealand seamers bounce and carry, there was no dramatic movement. The only positive for the visitors, apart from some decent toporder scores, is that they now have an extra day of preparation for the Hamilton Test, which begins on Saturday.

REGION 1 STEERING F1 walking a tightrope in COMMITTEE INSTALLED America, says Ferrari boss – Region moves closer to becoming GFF Regional Member Association Region 1 has moved one step closer to becoming a Regional Member Association (RMA) of the Guyana Football Federation with the establishment of a steering committee at Moruca sub-district, Region 1. The committee was presented with its Terms of Reference (ToR), which includes among others, the development of a Constitution and the registration of clubs in the
region. President of the GFF, Wa y n e F o r d e , w h o i s among a three-man visiting team said the GFF is pleased to offer the structure and organization necessary to enable the region to maximize its resources: “The expansion of football across Guyana is beyond the mandate of t h e G F F ’s E x e c u t i v e Committee. We also have a moral obligation to give every young boy and girl
Wayne Forde the opportunity to play football and within the Barima-Waini community there are a lot of passionate and talented young footballers. The only way that the GFF can give them the level of support that is needed to bring structure and organization to the game is by having the steering committee start the important work of leading Region 1 towards full-fledge membership of the Guyana football fraternity.” Forde said while this is considered an ad hoc committee under the GFF’s Constitution, with a six-month life-span, “our goal is to propose Region One’s membe r s h i p to the Congress in May 2018 but, of course, that will be based entirely on the work the steering committee does to demonstrate to the Executive Committee that they’re worthy of being inducted as members of the Guyana Football Federation.” “Government’s support to this endeavour is critical given the logistics of integrating Region 1 into national football,” said Forde. “We also take this opportunity to invite the NGOs and all stakeholders within the Region 1 community to come onboard and support the work of the steering committee and do whatever is necessary to help Region O n e ’s integration into national football.” Forde added that the establishment of the Steering Committee will see GFF’s immediate technical support to the region via capacity building sessions to identified coaches, referees and others as necessary. Other members of the visiting team are Dion Inniss, GFF’s Executive Committee Member and Ian Greenwood, GFF’s Technical Director.
MILAN (Reuters) Formula One is walking a tightrope as new owners Liberty Media plan to grow the sport in America, Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne has warned. Marchionne, who is also chief executive of Fiat Chrysler, recognized there was a big opportunity to win new audiences in the United States but said the sport’s heritage had to be respected. U.S.-based Liberty, who took over the sport in January, are planning to add at least one North American race to the calendar after 2018 and want to build up the show around grand prix weekends. “I think it’s fair to say that (F1 chairman) Chase (Carey) and I agree we need space in the United States,” Marchionne told reporters at a presentation on Saturday of Alfa Romeo’s new partnership with the Swiss Sauber team. Carey also attended the event. “I think there is an opportunity here, if we do the things right, to make this a relevant sport in the U.S. environment. “And if we do that I think it will benefit the sport tremendously,” added Marchionne. “But I put a big proviso on this.
“We need to be careful that this desire to make us attractive to the American public doesn’t end up sapping away the DNA of a sport that has some noble origins.” Marchionne highlighted the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin that saw big fight boxing announcer Michael Buffer present drivers to the crowd individually before the race and then make his signature call of “Let’s get ready to rumble”. Marchionne, who has dual Italian and Canadian citizenship, said the dignity of the sport must be respected. “I think we need to preserve it, we need to modernize it in a way which Americans find relevant,” said Marchionne. “And that’s the tricky part that I think Chase and I need to walk. “We’re walking a tightrope on this because if we go too far to try and appeal...” “The performance down in Austin and the way in which we arranged the show was not what I think a Formula One event ought to be. But it was part of a trial and error exercise, I don’t think it worked incredibly well. “I think a lot of the Europeans were somewhat
Sergio Marchionne taken aback by what happened. We need to find a halfway house that somehow appeases and actually enhances the interest of the public on both sides of the pond.” Marchionne said a threat made last month to take Ferrari out of the sport after 2020, if Formula One made changes that were not in the Italian team’s interests, was real but there was enough time to sort things out. Ferrari, the sport’s oldest and most successful team, have taken issue with a proposed simpler and cheaper engine for 2021 while cost caps and revenue distribution are other thorny subjects.
India v Sri Lanka Test match halted by smog in Delhi
BBC Sport - Sri Lanka players wore face masks to combat smog pollution that disrupted the third Test against India in Delhi. The Indian capital has been plagued by the problem for several weeks. Sri Lanka had just 10 men on the pitch at one point, despite several players wearing masks, with Lahiru Gamage and fellow bowler Suranga Lakmal leaving the field during the afternoon session. India declared their first innings on 536-7, with captain Virat Kohli scoring a careerbest 243. The 29-year-old became the first international captain to score six double centuries, all of them coming in the last 17 months, but the smog prompted him to declare with Sri Lanka players complaining about the conditions and play stopped on three occasions. On one occasion the umpires consulted doctors and physiotherapists before resuming.
Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal was one of several players to wear a face mask while fielding. (Sky Sports) India coach Ravi Shastri and Sri Lanka counterpart Nic Pothas also came on to the field to speak to umpires. In reply, Sri Lanka reached 131-3 at the end of the second day. India lead the series 1-0 and need only a draw for a record-equalling ninth
successive Test series triumph. England and Australia are the other sides to have achieved the feat. Scores: Sri Lanka 131 for 3 (Mathews 57*, Chandimal 25*) trail India 536 for 7 dec (Kohli 243, Vijay 155, Rohit 65, Sandakan 4-167) by 405 runs.

everyone left satisfied that football had won and nothing else. The night started with Albouystown-based Judgement Yard defeating Smyth Street 4-3 in a penalty shootout after their encounter ended 1-1. However, the win was not enough to take them through to the next stage, having finished third in Group E. It was a similar situation for Albouystown ‘B’ who beat Rising Stars 2-1, but ended third in Group ‘D’. Albouystown ‘A’ lost a titanic matchup to Leopold Street 1-0 on penalty kicks after their clash failed to register goals in regulation time, sending them crashing out of the competition in disappointing fashion. Other big losers on the night were Back Circle, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Trap Squad,
while Bent Street dispatched Sophia Bullies 3-1. The winning team will receive $500,000, a trophy and an automatic berth in the national playoffs, while second, third and fourth place finishers will take home $250,000, $200,000 and $100,000 along with trophies. Miguel Cotto v Sadam Ali: Surprise points defeat for WBO champion in final bout BBC Sports - Six-time world champion Miguel Cotto ended his 16-year boxing career with a unanimous points-decision defeat by Sadam Ali in New York. Cotto, 37, had announced before the defence of his WBO light-middleweight title that the fight would be his last. But the Puerto Rican, who won world titles in four weight categories, could not handle the quickness of 29year-old Ali. “I am good, and I want to be happy in my home with my family,” Cotto said. Cotto’s career ends with 41 wins and six defeats. He suffered an injury to his left biceps in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden (MSG) and struggled to make an impact in the fight. After 12 rounds the judges scored the fight 115-

fight. “I am proud to call MSG my second home. I had the opportunity to provide the best for my family because of the sport.” Ali added: “I want to
thank team Cotto. They could have taken an easier fight if they wanted too. I had him hurt here or there in the first couple of rounds. I knew I had to do something, or he would have dug in.”

Late Silva goal extends City’s Marsh century puts Australia in charge in Adelaide winning run to 13 games
David Silva netted just his second goal of the season - his first coming in the 7-2 victory over Stoke in October. (Getty Images) (Reuters) - MANCHESTER CITY 2 WEST HAM UNITED 1 David Silva scored a late goal as runaway leaders Manchester City won their 13th successive Premier League game and restored their eight-point lead with a 2-1 victory against West Ham United yesterday. Silva converted Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant pass from close range in the 83rd minute as City maintained their blistering form this season. Nicolas Otamendi had converted substitute Gabriel Jesus’s cross in the 57th minute to equalise after defender Angelo Ogbonna had headed West Ham into the most unlikely lead at the end of a first half in which the hosts dominated. In winning their 13th successive Premier League match, City equalled the record held by both Arsenal and Chelsea. “It was difficult, teams seem to come here and get every man behind the ball, not interested in anything but parking the bus,” City midfielder Fabian Delph told Sky Sports. “But we have players like David Silva in the team, so we knew if we kept going we’d get our chances. We knew we had to be patient, we came out flying in the second half, we tried to explain to the boys we still had time and then we started to relax a bit more and found those spaces. “We want to win the derby but we are taking it each game at a time.” After rivals United beat Arsenal 3-1 on Saturday to cut their lead to five points, City
needed to win against relegation-threatened West Ham to restore their comfortable lead ahead of next weekend’s trip to Old Trafford. As expected, City dominated possession but the mass ranks of West Ham defenders frustrated their array of attacking players and disrupted the rhythm of their intricate, threaded passes. Surprisingly, it was West Ham who came closest to opening the scoring when Michail Antonio stretched to fire a close-range volley over the top. Not until the 26th minute did goalkeeper Adrian make his first meaningful save, pushing Silva’s deflected shot over the crossbar. Manuel Lanzini drew a save from Ederson 10 minutes later before out-of-sorts City failed to deal with a corner — as they did in last weekend’s victory at Huddersfield Town — with Ogbonna’s downward header evading Ederson. Otamendi restored parity shortly after the break but, until Silva’s late intervention, it appeared that City’s search for a winner would prove fruitless. Jesus, Leroy Sane, de Bruyne, Silva and Raheem Sterling all went close as the Hammers defended superbly in their most impressive performance under manager David Moyes. City have not lost a game since April, and face second-place United next Sunday. West Ham, who have won only twice all season, sit 19th — three points behind West Bromwich Albion in 17th.

Shaun Marsh raised his fifth Test hundred before going on the attack as Australia declared on 8 for 442 ©Getty Images ADELAIDE (Reuters) Australia took firm control of the second Ashes test when an unbeaten century from Shaun Marsh pushed the hosts to 442 for eight declared in their first innings on the second day of the day-night contest yesterday. The tourists, who sent the Australians in to bat after winning the toss on Saturday, had made 29 for one in reply when rain brought a premature end to the day’s play at Adelaide Oval. It looked like something of a reprieve for England, who had already lost Mark Stoneman for 18 to leave Alastair Cook, unbeaten on 11, and James Vince, yet to score, facing a night assault from Australia’s pace battery. Marsh had earlier put the hosts on the front foot with his fifth test century, a 231ball vindication of the decision by the Australian selectors to hand the 34-yearold his eighth test recall. “We knew if we could bat for most of the day and put them in under lights we’d be a chance,” Marsh told reporters. “To be nice and patient, and get a hundred there at the end was pleasing. “It’s great to be playing for Australia and just to be out there in the middle.” Marsh had to grit it out at times as England produced a much improved bowling performance after a disappointing day one and
had the Decision Review System (DRS) to thank for a life after initially being given out lbw to James Anderson on 29. Tim Paine, who joined Marsh at the crease when Stuart Broad dismissed Peter Handscomb lbw with the third delivery of the day, was similarly reprieved when tracking showed an Anderson delivery would have gone over the stumps. Marsh put on 85 with Paine as the two most controversial selections in the Australia squad for the first two tests frustrated England before the wicketkeeper holed out for 57 — a third test half century coming seven years after his second. DROPPED CATCH The left-hander then put together a stand of 99 with Pat Cummins, reaching the hundred mark in the process
with a sumptuous pull off a Chris Woakes delivery which raced to the square leg boundary for his 12th four. The batsman whipped off his helmet to acknowledge the applause of another bumper crowd at the Adelaide Oval and almost immediately had another reprieve when Cook and James Vince collided in the gully with neither able to take a simple catch. If much of Marsh’s progress to the century had been a stop-start affair, there was nothing cautious about the way he punished the tourists for their profligacy after the break as Steve Smith pondered the declaration. With Cummins initially providing back-up with his highest test score, a sevenboundary 44, Marsh added three more fours and a punishing straight six off Broad to finish unbeaten on 126 when Smith finally called him in. “Some days it goes your ways and some it doesn‘t,” England coach Trevor Bayliss said. “There’s a good feeling in the dressing room. They’re certainly not disheartened at all. Shaun showed it’s not impossible to score runs out there. It will be up to one of our guys to go out and make a bit score, not just 40 or 50.” England, already 1-0 down in the five-match series after a 10-wicket loss in Brisbane last week, made a reasonable start before Mitchell Starc sent down a fizzing yorker that trapped Stoneman in front. To add insult to injury on a day when the DRS had worked so well for Australia, Stoneman referred the decision, only for the tracking to show the ball would have clattered into his leg stump. Scores: England 1 for 29 (Cook 11*, Vince 0*) trail Australia 8 for 442 dec (Marsh 126*, Paine 57, Khawaja 53, Overton 3-105) by 413 runs.
