CJIA MODERNISATION

TheCheddiJaganInternationalAirportexpansion hasturnedouttobeabonanzaforPoliticiansand

Contractors. What was previously going under thenameofexpansionhasnowgottenafacelift, throughthe newdescriptionofoverjoyedleaders.

It is called ‘modernization’ in gearing up for different kinds of aircraft, many types of international visitors, and greatnumbersofthem.

Given the billions of Guyana dollars spent on different phases of the CJIA renovation, expansion, and continuing modernization, itisbecomingapparentthatthismorethana cashcowforpoliticiansandtheirwell-connectedpeople. It isabigblackholefortheGuyanesepeople.

The PPP/C Government partnered with China Harbour andEngineeringCorporation(CHEC)tocommenceworkat the CJIAin 2011, almost 12 years ago. The price tag was US$150MorapproximatelyGY$30B,andisnowonits3rd GuyaneseGovernment. Bytoday’sstandards, acasecould bemadethatGuyana’sCJIAexpansionprojecttookalmost aslongasthebuildingoftheGreatWallofChina. Previous PPP/C Governments, the Coalition Government, and now thisPPP/CGovernmenthaveallhadtheirsayandtheirinput intothisairport, aboutwhodidn’tgetthingsright, andwho endedupdoingwrong.

The Coalition found itself starting over almost from scratch with CHEC, to get some work done; and when the PPP/C returned to power in 2020, the carnival continued withmoreextensionsoftime.

As usual, strong sounding speeches were made by Government Leaders and Ministers about holding the Contractor accountable, and not a cent more being spent to gettheairportworkscompleted. Thentheyallgotwise, and cameupwithaslickcardtrick.

There are these additions under different caps, with the latestbeingtheneedforongoingmodernizationtothetuneof GY$890M. WhenGuyanesethoughttheyweregettingthe wholeworksfromtheinception, theyarenowbeingledona newsonganddance.

Itisaboutwhatelsewemusthave, andthesamedecades long story of the cash cow, milking cow, ad almost sacred cowthattheCJIAhasbecome. Itisatrulywonderfulthingto beaPoliticianandContractor, andtobeanywherenearthe works (and money spent) on the self-extending CJIA complex.

For the longest time, Guyanese were thinking that what they were getting was a 21st century structure that could comparetoanyintheworld, whattheyendedupwithinstead is some improvements here and there, and not much else. Certainly,noGuyaneseofanysensewouldlookat, oruse,or pass through, what is now present and say with some conviction that we, the Guyanese people, got our money’s worth in the GY$30B spent, and we are proud of what we nowhaveforamodernairport.

WhenwethinkofthisGY$890Mforanewterminalso thatspacecanbemadeforavarietyofcommercialactivities, we can’t help but wondering what else is going on in the heads of our government and its leaders with this airport, whatisnextinlineforsomemoremillions.

Anever-endingprojectliketheCJIA,onewherethebig dollars flow like water running downhill, is a godsend for Politicians and those eager for a piece of the rewarding action. On each occasion that construction gets nearer to closingout, thePoliticianscomeupwithsomenewscheme tokeepthegravytrainrunning.

Othercountrieshavesucceeded, orareclosetofinishing offairportfacilitiesthatarewaybetter, muchmoremodern, than what we now have at CJIA. They have done so in a shortertime, andformanylessmillions. Consideringallof this, ourpositionisthattherecouldbeoneofthreethingsin motionattheCJIA.

First, Guyanese Politicians are just plain incompetent, andcouldn’tgetacattodrinkmilk. Second, theydon’thave aclearandcompletevisionofwhatamodernairportshould looklike.

The Guardian - Edward Snowden has received a Russian passport after swearing an oath of allegiance to the country that has sheltered him from US authorities since 2013, his lawyer has said.

Snowden, 39, a former intelligence contractor who leaked secret files that were reported on by the Guardian, was grantedRussiancitizenship in an order signed by Vladimir Putin in September

On Friday, Snowden’s lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, said Snowden had received his passport.

South Korea advance at World Cup after stoppage-time winner

AL RAYYAN, Qatar (AP) South Korea advancedtotheroundof16attheWorldCup onthetiebreakerofgoalsscoredafterbeating Portugal 2-1 yesterday following a stoppagetimestrikefromHwangHee-chan.

South Korea was heading out of the tournament until Son Heung-min led a length-of-the-field breakaway in the first minute of added time and slipped a pass through to Hwang, who converted a low finish. Son and his teammates then formed a huddleinthemiddleofthefieldafterthefinal whistle and watched coverage of the end of

Switzerland beat Serbia to advance out of Group G with Brazil

N B C S p o r t s Switzerland snagged the secondspotinGroupGwith a 3-2 win over Serbia at the QatarWorldCupyesterday

All five of the game’s goals came in the first 50 minutesofthegame. Thanks to a win over Cameroon in the group stage opener, Switzerland needed either a win or a tie to advance to the knockout rounds unless Cameroon beat Brazil and edged ahead on goal difference. It didn’t, though Cameroon did win 1-0 as Brazil put out a secondstring starting lineup knowing that a tie was enoughtowinthegroup.

Switzerland scored first before Serbia scored twice in less than 10 minutes to briefly take a 2-1 lead. That wasavitalleadfortheSerbs; they had to win to have any

chance of advancing. So did Cameroon After an incredible comeback to tie Serbia in its second game, Cameroon had a chance to advance to the knockout rounds on four points with somehelpfromSerbia.Alas, thathelpneverhappened.

The winning goal for Cameroon came from VincentAboubakarinadded time. He took his shirt off in jubilation after scoring the goal and apparently briefly forgot that he had already received a yellow card. The mandatory card for the shirt removal meant a red and Aboubakargotsentoff.

According to Opta, Aboubakar is the first player toscoreagoalandbesentoff in a World Cup game since 2006 when Zinedine Zidane was sent off for his infamous headbutt in the World Cup

final Switzerland tied Serbia just before halftime on a fantastic goal by Breel Embolo. The Swiss then took the lead less than three minutes into the second half on Remo Freuler’s strike. Serbia seemed to tire over the final 30 minutes of the game as they were far more dangerous in the first half than they were in the second when they needed to chase the game. The four goals scored in the first half were the most first-half goals in a WorldCupgamesince1998.

Switzerland will play Portugal on Tuesday in the Round of 16 while Brazil plays South Korea on Monday Brazil hopes to have Neymar and Danilo back for those games after they suffered ankle injuries in Brazil’s opening win over Serbia.

‘It’s absolute madness’: Argentina coach hits out at Fifa after sealing World Cup progress

Independent - Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said it was “madness” for his team toplaytheirWorldCup2022 last 16 game against Australia with just two rest days after their last group match.

The South Americans beat Poland 2 0 on Wednesday night to top their group and set up Saturday’s knockoutclash.

“I think it’s absolute madness to play in nearly two days and a bit when we are top of the group. I can’t understand it,” Scaloni said, talking to the media after the game at Doha’s 974 Stadium endedjustbeforemidnight.

“What time is it? Nearly oneo’clockinthemorning Thursday, the next day is for preparationandthenweplay Thosearen’tgoodconditions but it’s the same for everyone. We’re first in the group. We could have had more rest.” Australia will only benefit from a few hours’ more time to recuperate and prepare than Argentina, given their last group match was completed earlier on Wednesday But Scaloni’s comments touch on the wider controversy over holding the World Cup in Qatar due to the hot conditions and more compressedtimetable.

Argentina have found their rhythm again in beating both Mexico and Poland comfortablyinGroupCafter their shocking opening loss to SaudiArabia. But Scaloni said they must be wary of Australia who fought their way to the last 16 with gritty wins over Denmark and Tunisia. “Our fans should enjoy this. We are happy todaybutwedon’twanttobe euphoric,”hesaid.

“All the games are hard. Anyone who thinks the match against Australia will be easy is wrong. We’re not favourites. If you think that just because we won today, we are going to become

World Cup winners, you’re wrong.” Scaloni said he took strikerAngel Di Maria off in the second half to protect him. “Di Maria had some discomfort in his quadriceps and we decided to substitute him. If there’s a chance that he gets injured then it’s not worthit,”hesaid.Hepraised his team for neutralising Poland’s counter-attacks and keeping attacker Robert Lewandowski quiet “We didn’t really allow them to counter-attack. It was to our credit. I think that we read the match very well. My players did a great job. They played very well and I am veryhappy
