Israel withdraws troops, 72-hour Gaza truce begins
Palestinians sit on the remains of their destroyed homes after returning to Beit Hanoun town, which witnesses said was heavily hit by Israeli shelling and air strikes during the Israeli offensive. Credit: REUTERS/Finbarr O’Reilly (Reuters) - Israel withdrew ground forces from the Gaza Strip yesterday and started a 72-hour ceasefire with Hamas mediated by Egypt as a first step towards negotiations on a more enduring end to the monthold war. Minutes before the truce began at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) (0600 am BST), Hamas launched a salvo of rockets, calling them revenge for Israel’s “massacres”. Israel’s anti-missile system shot down one rocket over Jerusalem, police said. Another hit a house in a town near Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank. There were no casualties. Israeli armour and infantry left Gaza ahead of the truce, with a military spokesman saying their main goal of destroying cross-border infiltration tunnels dug by
Islamist militants had been completed. “Mission accomplished,” the military tweeted. Troops and tanks will be “redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and we will maintain those defensive positions”, spokesman LieutenantColonel Peter Lerner said, reflecting Israeli readiness to resume fighting if attacked. Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman for the Islamist Hamas faction that rules Gaza, said Israel’s offensive in the densely populated, coastal enclave was a “100 percent failure”. Israel sent officials to join talks in Cairo to cement a longer-term deal during the course of the truce. Hamas and Islamic Jihad also dispatched representatives from Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu convened his decisionmaking security cabinet to discuss the aftermath of the fighting, officials said. In Gaza, where some half-million people have been displaced by a month of bloodshed, some residents, carrying mattresses and with children in tow, left U.N. shelters to trek back to neighbourhoods where whole blocks have been destroyed by Israeli shelling and the smell of decomposing bodies fills the air. Visiting International Red Cross President Peter M a u r e r, r e s p o n d i n g t o local criticism that his organisation was late in helping some victims, said “we were insufficiently able to bridge the gap between our willingness to protect them and our ability to do so”.
Russia’s Putin orders response to Western sanctions Moscow (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday ordered his government to draft a response to “unacceptable” Western sanctions over Moscow’s perceived backing of pro-Kremlin rebels in Ukraine’s volatile east. But, he said, authorities will have to move carefully to make sure the steps do not hurt Russians. “Political instruments of pressure on the economy are unacceptable. They contradict all norms and rules,” news agencies quoted Putin as saying. “The Russian government has already proposed a number of response measures to socalled sanctions imposed by certain countries.
“I think that in current conditions, in order to ensure the interests our producers, we could very well think about this now.” Putin added that he expected the cabinet to prepare measures that spared consumers from suffering any shortages of important Western goods. “Of course, we have to act extremely carefully so that we support domestic producers but do not harm consumers,” he said. The latest and most punishing round of sanctions that the United States and the European imposed last week target Russia’s key oil and arms industries. Top state-held firms have seen their access to Western borrowing markets severely
restricted and face a possible freeze on trade of their shares on both European and New York exchanges. Russia’s low-cost airline Dobrolet has also been forced to ground all its flights because of EU sanctions hitting its leases for Boeing aircraft. Moscow’s Vedomosti business daily said the Russian government was now considering whether to strike back at the European Union by placing a total or partial ban on its airlines’ flights over Siberia to Asia. Bank of America Merrill Lynch estimates those fees bring in around $250-$300 million per year for Dobrolet’s pairline airline Aeroflot — a third of the company’s operating profit.

WHERE ARE THE TRAFFIC WARDENS? A few weeks ago, I was heading along a busy city street and had to stop at a junction where there are traffic lights. At the same time, a traffic cop was passing and he noticed that a hire car was comfortably parked on a noparking section near that junction. The traffic cop approached the driver. I expected the driver to be hauled down to the police station, because this was a blatant and bare-faced violation of our traffic laws and one that takes place every
day at that particular junction. There are some presumptuous car drivers who refuse to acknowledge the no-parking signs on our roads and who nonchalantly park their vehicles on those signs without fear of being arrested or charge. They must have reason to be confident that the police would not charge them. On this particular day, the traffic cop on a motor cycle spoke to the driver. Whatever he was told must have satisfied him. He simply rode on. The driver did not remove
his vehicle from the noparking sign. As the cop rode off, he noticed a car parked further ahead in the middle of the roadway. This car had stalled the flow of traffic. The reason for the vehicle being parked in the middle of the roadway was because it had been in a collision with another vehicle. The traffic cop rode up and spoke to the driver of the car who pointed to the other car which was involved in the collision. That other driver came over and spoke to the
Dem boys seh...
WHO GUN THROW WATA PUN DE FIRE? Everybody got a destiny and it will throw up different pothole for different people. The trick is that you got to expect dem. Dem boys know that from experience, indeed, you must prepare yourself to face them. A wise man seh that a sensible man does watch for problems ahead and prepare to meet them without looking back with regret. De road to success got nuff potholes, just like de roads in Diamond and dem other housing schemes that Irfaat and Jagdeo dem build. You bound to fall in some. It full wid mud, coo-coo, and everything else that Guyanese people know bout. The trick is that you have to climb back out, get clean up and keep going. Guyana got nuff, nuff thieves, schemers and scamps … you name dem, we gat dem. But dem boys hopeful for de future. Dem praying and fasting for a change. Dem boys know that we still got a lot of good people who want to see Guyana do well. In other words, dem got Guyana interest in dem heart.
Is just like dem boys. Dem too gat Guyana not only in dem heart but in dem blood stream. Never mind Uncle Adam blood lil thin. Dem want to see everybody mekking money like de Bees. Dem want to see all Guyanese get duty free concessions too. All this is wha dem boys praying for. Wha dem boys have a problem wid is how de hard wukkin taxpayer money spending and in who hand it going. Is one set of people the money ending up wid. Dem so greedy that is even the bread crumbs dem does try to tek away from de small man. Ask de Bees and
dem friends. The poor people does always end up suckin salt. Well, dem boys want to warn dem that nothing lasts forever. Ask de Kamla woman from Trinidad. She is a good woman with a conscience. She done fire 13 ministers for thiefing, thinkin of thiefin and even one who get ketch tekkin a spliff. Dem boys want all de Bees, as well as Rob-de-Earth, Irfaat and the hanna-rebel to know dem boys dont exactly hate dem, but if anyone ah dem on fire and dem boys have water…dem would rather drink it!!! Talk half and see how much dem boys thirsty.
driver of the car which was parked in the middle of the road. Together they surveyed the damage. One driver exchanged a card with the other and both went their separate ways without the traffic cop venting any objection. Now according to the laws of Guyana, all traffic accidents are required to be reported to the police station. This one was not. The drivers were allowed to circumvent this requirement by a very accommodating traffic cop. A few days ago, I was passing by that same junction. Again I saw hire cars parked on the no-parking section of the roadway. There is total disregard for the law. The police are clearly in need of assistance to bring an end to these and other violations of our country’s traffic laws. One of the means of assisting the police was through the appointment of traffic wardens. Many years ago, legislation was passed that would have allowed for the appointment of traffic wardens. Then nothing was heard about this programme. Lo and behold, one month ago, there was the launch of
the traffic warden programme. Only seven traffic wardens were appointed, all of whom were female. The public were assured that these wardens would be stationed around the country. Instead of seven traffic wardens, Guyana needs around seven hundred wardens to control traffic. Not only are there problems in many parts of the country with the flow of traffic, but there is an equally unceasing number of violations which takes place every day because of ineffective policing. Take for example the situation outside of our Courts. Years ago, there was an Order issued by a High Court judge prohibiting parking on both the eastern and western carriageways of Avenue of the Republic, just opposite the High Court of Guyana. Well, for years now vehicles are being where they should not be parked. Obviously, something is amiss here. Has the Court Order been revoked? Or is it a case of the police not doing their work? Then there is the constant abuse of filter lanes in our country. These are lanes designated for traffic that is
turning left. If you are going straight ahead, you are not supposed to use the filter lane. But every day, you can see motor vehicles flagrantly refusing to use the correct lanes and instead resorting to using the filter lanes to proceed straight ahead. This practice presents a great deal of problems for effective traffic management. And what have the police done about it? Well, you know the answer better than I do. It is hoped that whenever the next batch of traffic wardens are appointed that they would be assigned to police these filter lanes and the no-parking areas in the city. Some of them should also be designated to deal with a new and dangerous practice on our roads. It is called running the red light. It now seems that some motorists believe that when they see a red light it means they can drive right through it.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
Outrageous magistrates, a frightened Bar Association and the piper In this world, try to be honest with others, but most of all be honest with yourself. Then live your life as you see fit. Don’t be bothered with the unpleasant things others say once they are not paying you to sing. There are good people left in this country that will come to your rescue when in need. An eminent person that does not get involved in politics and who runs a popular restaurant in Georgetown told
me that he was about to bring food for me and Mark Benschop when we were locked-up for three days on frivolous traffic offences. There are many more like him. I couldn’t be bothered with the attitude of Mr. Mike Mc Cormack of the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) towards me. After several criticisms in these columns over the years of a defunct GHRA, including the thirty-odd years Mr. Mc
Cormack has been its head, the GHRA was perhaps the only organization that was silent when my UG contract was terminated. Obviously, it had to do with those criticisms. But why worry. There were many who gave me support. And will continue to do so. The GHRA has resources and a huge office, but you never ever hear from these people in a country that is overflowing with repugnant and
abominable forms of violations coming from not only the state, but corporate power and unconscionable employers. Most times I read about Mc Cormack in the media it is about his status as a rugby administrator, not as a human rights advocate. If we had a functioning human rights body, Leonard Craig would not have had to defend himself when he took Digicel before the Public Utilities Commission and won. If we had a functioning human rights watch group, the horrible, horrendous and hell-raising things our mediocre magistrates get away with would be confronted and exposed. You read about the things these magistrates do and you wonder if we are at the movies rather than living in a real country. As soon as a magistrate opens his/her mouth, the bail begins from a hundred thousand and up, and for hardly dangerous acts. If the police charge you with six counts of theft, the bill is a hundred thousand for each count. The magistrates are filling up the Camp Street remand with unreasonable bail impositions. What is appalling is that these
magistrates know that there is no watchdog out there to check them, so they say and do the most unreasonable and unconscionable things. Read the newspapers on the pronouncements of Guyana’s magistrates. One magistrate recently told an accused he cannot have bail because he has no legal representation. I cannot recall her name or else I would have named her. Which law school this woman came out of? Since when does the granting of bail depend on the presence of a lawyer? I read where a lover’s quarrel ended up with one party charged for stealing the other’s stuff worth half a million dollars. The things were recovered, yet bail was put at $100, 000. Why not put the man on minimal bail. He didn’t maul anyone. On the contrary, we have a citizen that allegedly shot at GRA officers, not with an arrow and bow, but with actual guns. The man was assigned $350,000 bail. Maybe this gentleman has political connection or is rich. Only poor citizens are victims of the brutal side of Guyana’s magistrates. So where does this leave the Bar Association? If anything is a caricature in Guyana, it is the Bar
Frederick Kissoon Association’s relation with the judicial system. How can lawyers criticize incompetent magistrates and judges when they earn their income appearing in front of these people? The High Court is now hearing libel writs filed around 2004. That is ten years ago. Norris Witter of the TUC and I appeared before Justice Harnanan last week to answer separate libel writs filed eleven years ago. Yet a libel writ filed in September 2010 went to trial in July the next year. That was then President Jagdeo’s affidavit against me and this newspaper. I wrote three times and I am writing it again - if Justice Ian Chang makes the CCJ, I will travel to Trinidad to protest. I am not sure I support the CCJ in front of the Privy Council anymore. I interviewed a lawyer about what Magistrate Judy Latchman did to his client. He was quick to say; “Freddie, don’t quote me.” A West Coast magistrate has his own church. The man is a preacher. A man of the cloth. A man of God. Heaven help this nation!

DEAR EDITOR, The one hundredth anniversary of the start of the WW I was observed on Monday in Europe. It was on Aug. 4, 1914 that Britain declared war on Germany for its transgressions. The “war to end all wars” spread carnage across Europe, especially northern France and Belgium, killing 17 million soldiers and civilians between 1914-18. The war’s origins may lie in the Balkans and somehow people may feel Europe was the theater of the war. Besides in Europe, the war fought in Asia, Africa, Middle East and the Mediterranean. Although there was no military action in the Caribbean, West Indian soldiers contributed to the war effort with soldiers from then British Guiana and other neighboring territories fighting in the war. Also, Indian and African troops fought in the war. In fact, the bulk of the colonial troops were from India with some 1.4 million Indians fighting in the war with some 75,000 dying and another 65K injured. The Caribbean, India, Africa and Asia were
profoundly affected by the war having to divert manpower, materials, production and funds to the war effort hurting the progress and development of the colonies to protect Europeans. Although colonial troops played a critical role in the war, the troops were never properly compensated or recognized by the European colonial empires and their role is not well known. A recent survey conducted in England reveal that over half of Britons didn’t know whether India had contributed over 1,000 troops in the war. Even the French and Belgians, who the Indians defended with their blood, are not knowledgeable of the important role the Indians play in saving their countries from German takeover and the French and Belgians did not provide meaningful compensation. I did research on the Indian contribution to both WWI and WW II under the supervision of Prof. James Watts of CCNY and plan to write about it. Ronald Todd... From page 5 As editor of the now defunct Dayclean Global I had interviewed Todd in 2008 where he warned that grassroots people in political organisations and the wider society should be treated with respect because “later you will need them.” The last time I spoke with him he lamented the current state of the sugar industry. In this society the salt of the earth are hardly acknowledged or treated with respect for the lives they lived
and struggles they fought. Todd was one among the “nameless” activists who struggle daily to make a living but could hold his head high because of the social positions that he took in defence of his own livelihood, labour rights and freedom in general. Singh on the lesser known fact of the 1.4 million Indian soldiers and civilian workers who came to defend France and Belgium. The hardships, casualties and diseases suffered by the colonial soldiers are not public knowledge. According to Singh, the Indian soldiers wrote about their experiences in around 600 letters when they were in hospitals, records of which are maintained in the Haryana Academy of Art and Culture. “Soldiers used to send one rupee from their monthly salary to the academy, which went towards education of students”, said the filmmaker. Singh said “Not many pictures have been available of the Indian soldiers except the ones from the hospitals where King George V had gone to visit them”. In tribute to the fallen heroes, in England, lights were switched off for an hour on Monday night. Also, British landmarks, including
both Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and St Paul’s Cathedral, went dark from 10 p.m. Reports say candles went out one by one until only a burning oil lamp remained at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. Prime Minister David Cameron asked Britons to switch off all but a single light in their homes for an hour as a mark of tribute to the fallen soldiers and the injured. Cameron and Prince William, second in line to the throne, attended 100th anniversary ceremonies in Scotland and Belgium on Monday paying tribute to those who died. The Prince said: “We salute those who died to give us our freedom. We will remember them,” he told Belgium’s King Philippe and other heads of state attending the Liège ceremony at the Allies’ Memorial, near to where German troops invaded Belgium in the early hours of Aug. 4, 1914 - the event which brought Britain into the war”.
Politicians and royalty from 83 countries, including Presidents Francois Hollande of France and Joachim Gauck of Germany, were among those in memorial service in Belgium. In Glasgow, Scotland, Cameron was joined by heir-tothe-throne Prince Charles at a centenary service. Cameron said: “When you think that almost every family, almost every community was affected, almost a million British people were lost in this war, it is right that even 100 years on, we commemorate it, we think about it and we mark it properly”. But proper recognition has not been given to those colonial troops who gave their lives in defense of Britain and other colonial empires. It would not be too late for the former empires to make adequate compensation to the surviving families who gave their lives in defense of Europe. Vishnu Bisram
Guyana’s Population Issues... From page 4 growth, “bombshell” if you wish, occurred during the 1980-to-1991 period. Dr. Thomas’ analysis about the 2002-to-2012 period, would be no less cogent, and applicable to the 1980-to-1991 period. Indeed, if one projects the 1960-1970 growth rate beyond 1970, the 1980 population would have been hit already by mid-1974. I make the case that the really exceptional out-ward migration happened during the mid-1970s-to-1991 period. And so, I proffer this interpretation of our series of census data, after the end of immigration and the repatriation of immigrants from India. “Our population was growing significantly from 1931, with a projection in 1960 of about 2.5 million in 2012. However, growth stalled in the mid-1970s, and reversed unto 1991. Growth resumed over the 1991-to2002 period, but stalled again and turned to a much smaller negative over 2002 to 2012.” A correlation with what was happening politically in our
country was obvious. The question now is what will happen over 2012 to 2022, and on-wards, whether the same degree of out-ward emigration that is indicated for the mid-1970s to 1991, will return – time will tell. Allow me, as I close, to say that I put forward herein my interpretation of our census data, not primarily to differ with Dr. Thomas (as I do, looking at the long-term trend, rather than limited to the 2002-to-2012 period, as Dr. Thomas preferred), but to generate discussion, and to help incline our minds to questions of our country’s growth and development, a job that we are still to get down to, sufficiently. I join Dr. Thomas in noting “the release by the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC)” which, using the series from 1960 of per capita GDP figures for Guyana and Singapore, sounded the alarm that we have lost decades in the per capita GDP measure of growth and development. For me, what was indicated is the need for a wide and detailed study and
comparison of Guyana and Singapore, from about the end of World War 11 to the present. Interestingly, BBC World recently presented a number of items on Singapore. With respect to the subject at hand - population growth and size - it was stated that Singapore, a small city- state, has now a population of about five million, with forty percent (40%) of its citizens being immigrants born in some other country. Perhaps, we should reconcile ourselves to many of our citizens emigrating to seemingly greener pastures, reaching for the stars, sharing their hard-won earnings with and sending us remittances; and we, in turn, can throw open our doors to whomsoever sees opportunity here with us in Guyana, developing Guyana to our mutual benefit, for, indeed, we all do affirm these days that the world is one, and all humanity is one! U.S. heightens embassy security, anticipating report on CIA interrogations (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department is increasing security at some American embassies in anticipation of the public release of a longawaited Senate report detailing the CIA’s use of harsh interrogation techniques, U.S. officials said yesterday. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the additional security measures reflected concerns that the report could prompt protests in countries where the CIA operated secret prisons that were used to conduct interrogations. Human rights activists and some U.S. politicians have labeled as “torture” some of the physically stressful interrogation techniques, such as simulated drowning, that were authorized under formerPresident George W. Bush. For security reasons, State Department officials declined to specify how or
where U.S. embassies were being fortified in anticipation of the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee report. One official said the Obama administration was concerned that the report’s publication could ignite a “tinder box” in Middle Eastern countries and also frighten some foreign security agencies into scaling back cooperation with their U.S. counterparts. According to unclassified documents and extensive news reports, sites where the spy agency secretly imprisoned detainees as part of its now-defunct “Rendition/Detention/ Interrogation” program included Poland, Romania, Thailand and Afghanistan, as well as the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While countries involved in the program were identified in news reports several years ago, publication of the committee’s report could rekindle anger, particularly in
the Muslim world, over U.S. practices that were pursued during Bush’s “war on terror.” Most, if not all, references in the report to the former locations of secret CIA prisons were redacted by the Obama administration in the process of preparing a declassified version of the report for public release, officials said. McClatchy Newspapers reported on Monday that the original, uncensored version of the report used pseudonyms when referring to countries where the agency operated secret prisons and that the White House and Central Intelligence Agency redacted the pseudonyms, rather than actual country names. An official familiar with both versions of the report said that publishing even the pseudonyms would provide readers with too many clues as to where CIA interrogations took place.
London (AFP) - A Foreign Office minister who was the first Muslim to sit in the British cabinet dramatically resigned yesterday over what she called the government’s “morally indefensible” policy on Gaza. The surprise decision by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, who also had responsibility for faith and communities, heaped pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to take a tougher line against Israel over its actions in Gaza. The coalition government has faced sustained criticism in recent days, led by the main opposition Labour party, that it has not spoken out strongly enough over the conflict.
“Our approach... in Gaza is morally indefensible, is not in Britain’s national interest and will have a long-term detrimental impact on our reputation internationally and domestically,” Warsi wrote to Cameron in her resignation letter. She said there was “great unease” in the Foreign Office, where Philip Hammond took over as foreign secretary from William Hague last month, about how recent policy decisions had been made. “Nearly 400 innocent children killed, we still cannot find the words to say we condemn this,” she later told Channel 4 news, adding that there was “unease” in the ranks
of the Conservative Party and that another minister had talked of resigning. In his letter responding to the resignation, Cameron expressed regret that Warsi had not informed him of her decision before announcing it on Twitter.“I understand your strength of feeling on the current crisis in the Middle East — the situation in Gaza is intolerable,” the prime minister wrote. He added: “Of course, we believe that Israel has the right to defend itself. Other ministers were less diplomatic and questioned the timing of the resignation, as a 72-hour truce took hold in Gaza following four weeks of fighting.

Teen gets 60 months for brazen robbery
Guilty: Wesley Griffith Less than one week after being jailed for a violently attacking his accuser in a courtroom, a Linden youth cried as he was jailed for sixty months on a Robbery with Aggravation charge yesterday. The courtroom of Magistrate Judy Latchman was reminded of the day 19year-old Wesley Griffith and a few friends visited Derek Haley’s business place in North Sophia, Greater Georgetown. Under the guise of being customers interested in making purchase, the crew proceeded to severely thrash Haley before making off with his motorcycle, two cellular phones and a quantity of
cash. The gang escaped that day, but Griffith was later caught and charged. The charge against Griffith stated that on June 26, 2013 at Lot 14 North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, he robbed Haley of the aforementioned articles which amounted to $277,000. In court he had denied knowledge of the incident. A trial subsequently got underway at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The case was prosecuted by Inspector Joel Ricknauth and Griffith was unrepresented by legal counsel. The trial concluded yesterday. When called upon to lead his defence, Griffith opted to remain silent and did not call any witness. As she ruled, Magistrate Latchman said that she believed that Griffith’s intention was to deprive Haley of his items and that violence was clearly used to attain that end. She said that the court had considered the evidence presented by the Prosecution and had found Griffith guilty as charged. As focus shifted to his antecedents, Inspector Ricknauth revealed that the teen is currently before the courts on six robbery under arms charges. He said that
Griffith was charged too for the illegal possession of a firearm as well as matching ammunition, and that he had also been sentenced to five months imprisonment last Wednesday by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for beating Haley in the said courtroom. Addressing the court during mitigation, the teenager said “Your honour, in this case here with Mr. Haley, me ain’t see no proper evidence brought against me to be found guilty.” He revealed that prior to being ordered into police custody, he had been employed as a welder/ fabricator. Griffith was admonished for his actions. Magistrate Latchman told him what he had done was a terrible thing. She stated that she had considered all the mitigating factors in his favour, his antecedents as well as the prevalence of the offence. The court, she said, had mulled over the organised manner in which the crime was committed since he had approached the businessman, feigning interest in purchasing a motorcycle. “I have considered too that there is a need to prevent others from contemplating committing this offence as well as you yourself.” Griffith was then sentenced to 60 months imprisonment. Magistrate Latchman instructed that his jail term will commence after he would have completed his first jail term.

Gold miner succumbs after being set alight in camp A 27-year-old gold miner succumbed in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Intensive Care Unit around 15:00 hrs yesterday. This was after he was allegedly set on fire by a coworker in the mining camp at Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni River on Monday. Dead is Kester Anderson of Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Coast Demerara. Anderson, who worked as a miner for the past two years, had sustained first degree burns to his face, head, hands and abdomen. He was first taken to the Bartica Hospital and was later airdashed to the GPHC where

According to information received, Anderson and a coworker were involved in a heated argument on Monday during which the man poured gasoline on him and set him on fire. This newspaper was told that the man accused of burning Anderson is on the run. At the GPHC yesterday, Anderson’s mother, Quenella Griffith said that she was at home when a relative informed her of what had transpired in the camp. “The person said that he and some man had an
argument and the man throw gasoline on him and then light him on fire… that is all I know… I don’t even know who burnt him,” the mother said. According to Griffith, the last time she spoke to her son was two weeks ago, but he did not tell her whether he had any problems with anyone. “I want justice for my son’s death. The police not telling me anything, I don’t even know who killed my son,” Griffith stressed. Anderson leaves to mourn his parents and siblings.
Cops seize vehicle with fake diplomatic plates Police are trying to determine whether the owner of a Ford F150 pickup had any sinister motives for driving around the city and elsewhere with false diplomatic plates on his vehicle. Police impounded the heavily-tinted pickup with the number plates ‘DC 74’ a few days ago and have reportedly detained the owner. They also searched an East Coast Demerara house during their investigation. Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle has been impounded at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary. Police have conducted a thorough search of the pickup, even employing their bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs in the search. “The vehicle is not
registered with any diplomatic missions here. When a heavily-tinted vehicle is driving around with false diplomatic plates you suspect either drugs or guns are involved,” a police official said. Kaieteur News
understands the vehicle owner has told police that he placed the false diplomatic plates on the pickup “for kicks.” But even this is said to be considered a serious offence for which the vehicle owner could be charged.
Motorcyclist killed in Lethem crash The country’s road fatality figure continues to climb following another accident at Lethem yesterday afternoon. The latest victim is 21-year old Roger King Jr., of Tabatinga, Central Rupununi. The man’s motorcycle crashed into another vehicle at the junction of Kanuku Drive and Beverly Hill Drive around 16:00 hours. He died while receiving treatment at the Lethem Hospital. According to reports, King Jr. who was proceeding along Kanuku Drive failed to stop at the intersection with Beverly Hill Drive and slammed into a passing vehicle. Eyewitnesses said that he was riding so fast that he was hurled about 18 metres (60 feet) from the point of impact. The other vehicle, which was also proceeding at a fast rate, was only brought to a stop several metres away. Yesterday’s accident was the first fatal one in Lethem in more than a year.

Kamla wants sweeping constitutional changes... Trinidad Guardian Government next week will debate legislation in Parliament to provide for a runoff poll in elections so that MPs can only take their seats in the Lower House if they obtain more than 50 per cent of the votes cast in their constituency. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced this planned legislation, which only requires a simple majority vote for passage, during Monday’s opening of the first and last session of the current tenth Parliament. The session is the final one leading up to a general election, nine months off. On the proposal to ensure all MPs are elected on a majority, the PM said: “This measure reaffirms democracy and ensures the balance of power is always tipped in favour of the people, not the government. “Over the years, we have seen so many candidates get elected to this House on the basis of winning less than 50 per cent of the votes cast. “It would be unfair to future candidates who will be elected and who will now come under the revised constitutional provisions for being recalled by their constituents, that they should start their term of office as MPs on the basis of being minority winners. “That will only serve to strengthen any persons
Caribbean Chikungunya cases top 500,000 – PAHO BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - CMC – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says the number of new cases of the Chikungunya in the Caribbean increased by nearly 38,000 last week with the Dominican Republic having the most cases. PAHO said that the total figure for the mosquitoborne disease had reached 513,393 cases compared with 473,523 cases a week earlier. The new figures include suspected and confirmed illnesses that are locally acquired and imported cases. The Dominican Republic accounted for 26,012 of the new cases and more than half of all cases, with an overall total of 307,933, according to PAHO. By contrast, the neighbouring French Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country of Haiti recorded only 50 new cases – all classified as suspected – for an overall total of 64,709.

She said the moves were to ensure the People’s Partnership administration kept more of its 2010 manifesto promises Citing background work on the issue by the Constitution Commission, she said the bill to be laid was based on the recommendations and amendments to the Constitution set forth in the commission’s report and post-script report. She said: “A Constitution Amendment Bill 2014 is to be introduced today, which will propose a term limit for the
office of the Prime Minister, a recall provision and a runoff poll in elections for the House of Representatives. These measures require only a simple majority. “Further, I will
me and my constituency?’” “In such a system,” the PM argued, “the voices of the minority would be respected even as effect is given to the will of the majority and every single vote would matter and count, as the possibility of voting a second time will breathe new life and meaning into the democratic process.” In recent elections some MPs have won by slim margins. Persad-Bissessar added that the runoff is often viewed as a corollary of the right of recall, as an MP who was elected with less than 50 per cent of the votes cast was obviously immediately vulnerable to a recall. Such polls, she said, were “widely used in countries with substantial democratic traditions, including France, Switzerland, Argentina, Venezuela, the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea.

Xavi was voted player of the tournament at the 2008 European Championship as Spain ended a 44-year wait for a major international trophy and began a period of domination on the world stage. They started the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as one of the favourites, but were dumped out of the tournament in the group stages after a 5-1 defeat by Netherlands and a 2-0 loss to Chile. Xavi said: “I was going to retire after Euro 2012 but head

Drakes guides Barbados to narrow... From page 32 Matthew Jones ended their resistance by uprooting the stumps of Lewis. Simon was joined by Cato and the pair added a further 38, but just as they seemed to bat their team out of trouble, Simon was removed by Chad Williams. Neil Persaud accounted for Cato and Latchman in quick succession to leave Windwards tottering at 83-6. It was all downhill from this point; Matthew Jones and Williams picked up two wickets for 18 runs each, while Persaud claimed 2-35. Lewis gave his team hope with the wickets of Lee-Germon Gaskin (00) and Akil Greenidge (00) in the first over before Ryan John sent back Nicholas Kirton (00), reducing the Bajans to 31. Drakes probably stood between victory and Windward Islands, he played a captain’s knock carefully rotating the strike. He hit John for two consecutive fours either side of the pitch before punching Deron Hypolite for another with five runs required. The right hander then gathered a single off the said bowler to see his team to safety. Shorey was not out on five. John, Pope and Hypolite had one wicket each. Past footballer Trevor Maxwell passes away
Trevor Maxwell He had represented Guyana with distinction as a football player in the right wing position and was a member of what pundits feel was the best team to have represented Guyana during the mid eighties. He hung up his boots ages ago yet his exploits are still the central topic of
discussion among football pundits. His feats are relegated to the history books and so too will Trevor Maxwell who drew his last breath Monday morning at his North American home. He was 52 years old. Former National Coach, Lennox Arthur, broke the sad news to Kaieteur Sport and said that Maxwell was a player of exceptional quality. He represented Western Tigers FC and also served as the Captain of the team. He was later called to national duties on the team selected for the Olympics qualifiers in Mexico. “He played in the right wing position and was exceptionally fast,” reminisced Arthur. He also said that the late ball weaver possessed excellent dribbling skills. Sabina lights up PM among hundreds at commissioning of light upgrade
A view of the first of four light towers installed a few weeks ago at Sabina Park in Kingston. (PHOTO: ASTON SPAULDING) Jamaica Observer.com JAMAICA’S Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was among hundreds in attendance at Sabina Park late Sunday evening to witness the first public powering-on of the newly installed floodlights at the venue. Several minutes before the clock hit 8:00 pm, during the ceremony to commission the lights at the world-famous ground, the prime minister gave the nod by declaring “Let us now have light,” and within mere seconds, all four towers lit up brightly. The long-awaited installation of lights will allow for, among other things, night cricket at Sabina Park. Considerable controversy
has surrounded the absence of lights at the ground, particularly since the country spent over US$100 million for its part in the region’s hosting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. The lighting project, powered by a US$2.1-million grant from the government of India and a further US$600,000 contribution from the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), began in early April and was wrapped up by the end of July. The state-run Urban Development Corporation (UDC) managed the operation, while the FosRich Group of Companies was the contractor. FosRich is linked with Philips Lighting, an international firm with
substantial ties in Europe, Asia and South America. JCA president Wilford ‘Bi l l y ’ H e a v e n , w h o thanked sponsors Digicel, Foska Oats and Busta soft drinks for throwing in a h e l p i n g h a n d “ a t late notice”, said the major focus for stakeholders is to ensure that the upgraded Sabina Park can attract significantly greater revenue. “The only way we can justify this... is if the park is used, not only for cricket, but for other events...for shows, for conventions and other activities,” he told those present at the venue. Fifties from Homraj, Paul give Guyana... From page 31 the 16-year-old Paul was stumped off Nikhil Dutta for a well calculated 51 to end a 44run stand with Homraj who assumed the lead role with an array of delightful shots and intelligent running between the wickets after Balchand Baldeo was bowled for a first ball duck at 149-6. Homraj displayed his wide repertoire of shots and majestically pierced the off-side field with a stunning cover drive for four. But it was the aggressive intent from the Rose Hall Youth and Sports Club batsman which was the feature of his innings. Homraj caressed Bascombe behind point for his sixth four to bring up his fifty and the spectators in the full members pavilion were on their feet. Kemol Savory played an excellent supporting hand with his intelligent 19 and shared in a 69-run partnership with Homraj before he
hit Bascombe to long-on at 218-7. The pint sized Homraj was removed by Bascombe at 2218 before Sankar (8) was bowled behind his back, sweeping at Buch. When the ICC Americas began their reply Guyana opened the bowling with an all spin attack which accounted for both openers in the first two overs to leave the visitors on 6-2. Aniket Joshi (1) played back to Baldeo and was struck plumb in front, while Armaan Kapoor (4) was bowled by Ramcharran. Former Berbice under-15 batsman Travis Ross, who now lives in the USA, and Nikhil Dutta joined forces but with the score on 22, Ross (5) hit Ramcharran to short extra cover as the Guyanese introduced two more off-spinners in Daimon Waldron from the north and Akil Wallace, who operated into a strong wind
which assisted him in getting drift. Dutta and Malik repaired the early damage with a 50run partnership with Malik sweeping Waldron for four and Dutta working the ball around nicely before Dutta (29) was run out by a direct hit from Hetymer at 72-4. It was soon 88-5 when Alex Dore (13) was caught behind off Sankar before Arjvn Parikh was hit on the inside of his right ankle by Paul and was forced to retire hurt on eight at 105-5. Malik played some delightful shots before he pushed forward to Sankar and was bowled for 26 to leave the tourists in 108-6. It was soon 1317 when Sankar dismissed Buch (8) as the ICC Americas found themselves in further trouble. Bascombe launched a brutal assault on Waldron sending him into orbit twice off successive balls before hitting
Ramcharran for another huge six in the next over. Ramcharran removed Delray Rawlings (1) at 154-8 before the powerful Bascombe dumped Waldron on top of the Cricket Board office, forcing Sattaur to introduce Chanderpaul who bowls with both hands. He started with left-arm spin and after Rawlings was run out at 170-9, Bascombe hit Chanderpaul on top of the Lance Gibbs Stands and brought up his fifty off the next ball, with another six before Chanderpaul had the last laugh when Bascombe skied a catch to mid-off to end the contest leaving Parikh unbeaten on eight. Today is a rest day and the competition continues tomorrow with Guyana facing Trinidad and Tobago at Bourda, while the ICC Americas come up against defending champions Jamaica at Everest.
