C a n a d i a n G o l d Company,OmaiGoldMines on Tuesday revealed that they have made another ‘excellent’golddiscoveryin their Wenot pit, located in Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni).
Omai is one of the few large-scale foreign mining companies working in Guyana.Omaiholdsa100% interest in the Omai gold project in Guyana, which produced over 3.7 million ouncesofgoldbetween1993 and2005.Thepropertyhosts twogolddeposits:theshearhosted Wenot Deposit and theadjacentintrusive-hosted GiltCreekDeposit.
In a press statement on Tuesday, thecompanynoted that assays have been received for an additional hole drilled in the Wenot target.Itwasalsostatedthat to date, fourteen holes have been completed totalling 5,235 metres, as drilling continues.
Elaine Ellingham, President&ChiefExecutive Officer(CEO)ofOmai, said “Our recent drilling that has focused on expanding the Wenotdeposithasbeenvery successful. These results for hole 230DD-065 are excellent, intersecting a

Moreover, Ellingham added that, “The current drilling of the Wenot target area remains focused on: 1) testingsomeoftheundrilled gaps within the Wenot depositmodeltoincreasethe resource, 2) expanding the western “starter pit” area, and3)providingevidenceof the vast open potential at depthfortheWenotdeposit. Thesenewresultsandrecent results with wide and good grade zones are expected to positively impact the resources as we move
forward to an updated mineral resource estimate expected in late September, withanexpecteddecisionto proceed with a preliminary economic assessment (“PEA”) immediately thereafter.”
Furthermore,onJuly17, 2023, just three weeks after Canadian gold company, Omai Gold Mines announced drilling results showing significant gold deposits in their Wenot pit –the company announced “similar excellent drill results.”
OnJune22,thecompany in a press release disclosed that within the first six monthsof2023,ithasdrilled 11 holes which showed significant gold in their Wenotpit.
In their July statement,
Ellingham, said: “similar to our excellent drill results fromacoupleofweeksago, these new results again confirm the significant expansion potential for the Wenot deposit, to depth as wellasalongtheflanks.”
The company had disclosed that since their return to Guyana’s gold industry, they have been expanding their search in their pits as well as increasingthedepthatwhich they search for gold. Ellinghamhadnotedthatthe resultssofarhaveprovento befruitful.
A s t h e f o r e i g n companies continue to explore Guyana’s gold fields,thegovernmentisyet to deliver on its promise to make all mining contracts public.
W h i l e f o r e i g n companies have been rushing to cash in on the “gold fever” in Guyana, the country has been suffering massive declines in its annual declarations since 2017.
Kaieteur News hadmade several requests for the Government of Guyana to releasetheminingcontracts, particularly large-scale miningcontracts.
In 2019, when Guyana became a member of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI),thecountryagreedto adhere to several requirements. In this case, EITI requirement 2.4 (a) of the2019Standardstatesthat Guyana should publicly disclose all mineral agreements entered into
force prior to the reporting period, in this case, 2019. Although the requirements were known to the administration, it continued tomakeexcusestoavoidthe releaseofthesecontracts.
In this vain, this newspaper reported in December 2022 that Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo dodged the matter on four differentoccasions.Duringa press conference in April however, he publicly committed to releasing the fiscal terms for all mining agreements. This was the second time the Vice President promised to “personally intervene” for thereleaseofthefiscalterms of all large-scale mining contracts.

ExxonMobil has Guyana in an iron grip, and most citizens are only becoming aware of how much this is so in bits and pieces. Information about pivotal aspects of the nation’soilwealthhasbeenlimitedatbest, mostlysparseand difficult to comprehend, when there is a new development. The latest such development is that ExxonMobil has conducted the related feasibility studies for the five oil projectsthatGuyanahasapproved.
It is in the company’s interest to do such studies. This determines, amongotherthings, thetechnicaldifficulties, the possible pressure risks, the full cost of a project, and how much of a return to factor-in to its pricing, so that the company’s efforts are profitable. In answer to a question about what Guyana has done when ExxonMobil’s feasibility studies are shared, the PPP/C Government’s leading oil voice,VicePresidentJagdeo, saidthat“Whatwedid, wehire practitioners, and people specific to the industry.” In addition,Jagdeosaidthat“wedoaninternalreview, andthen we have other external specialists who review these documents.”
On the face of it, this is helpful and encouraging. Nevertheless, Jagdeo’s response raises other questions, which we think are fair and reasonable. Regarding this “internal review” that is done locally, who are the people doingthis? Since, itiswidelyknownthatGuyanaisseverely lacking in the required skills, technologies, and overall capacity to oversee many crucial areas of this oil sector, how is it that this country is now capable of doing what Jagdeo describes as “internal reviews?” In other words, where did thesepeoplecomefrom, anddotheyhavewhatisrequiredfor a credible review job involving feasibility studies? Do they even know where to begin? Or is this one of Jagdeo’s usual figures of speech that gives something to grasp at, but which meansnexttonothing, andunderthepretenseofan“internal review?”
Capacity is the one thing, perhaps the only one that the PPP/C Government has not pushed into some far, dark corner It has been truthful enough to admit that Guyana suffers from a most severe deficit. Yet there is this grand pronouncementthatGuyanaisconducting“internalreviews” ofwhatExxonMobilhasdone. Somethingdoesnotfeelright or sits right, with this. Further, there was the even more comforting assurance from the Vice President that after the internal reviews are completed, then there is the additional layerofscrutinyintheformof“otherexternalspecialistswho reviewthese[feasibility]documents.”
This is good, and under normal circumstances would be the end of concerns about feasibility studies, or similar componentsintheoilsector However, thisisaGovernment of Guyana and a Vice President in charge of oil and, sad to say, neitherhasgivenGuyanesemuchconfidenceinhowthis massiveoilwealthisbeingstewarded. Therealityisthatthe PPP/C Government’s management of the oil patrimony has been riddled with mysteries, surprises, and secrecies. Internalreviewsdefinitelybelongintherealmofsurpriseand mystery, givenwhowehave, givenwhatweknow Veryfew things about this oil, if any at all, has been open and straight sinceoilhasbeenfoundhere. Thisisnotthemonopolyofthe PPP/CGovernment,butwasalsoembeddedinquiteafewoil developments when theAPNU+AFC Coalition Government wasincharge.
Oneofthebafflingdevelopmentswiththisoilishowtime has been compressed to suit the crafty visions of both ExxonMobil and operators in the PPP/C Government. For one, Guyanese are reminded of the less and lesser times in which oil studies were completed, which raised many eyebrows, astowhatwasactuallydone, andhowanythingof quality and credibility could be forthcoming, in such a short space of time. The concern was whether Guyana was really gettingthegenuinearticleinthestudiesclaimedtobedone.
Considering his track record with candidness, one never knows how to take what is given by Jagdeo. It would be to Guyana’s advantage if both “internal reviews” and “external specialists” did justice by citizens relative to ExxonMobil’s feasibilitystudies. Wearenotsosure.

Guyana Inc (TIGI), Frederick Collins is questioning the extension granted to ExxonMobil and its partners allowing the companies to continue exploring the 26,800 square kilometersStabroekBlock. In keeping with the provisions of the 2016 Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) the Stabroek Block partners were expected to relinquish or give back the state a
portion of the block that is equivalent to 20 percent in October this year In June this year, Vice President BharratJagdeorevealedthat Exxon will keep the entire concession for an additional year, since the company’s operationswereimpactedby the Corona Virus (COVID19)Pandemic.
Members of the former Coalition government has however denied this claim by the oil giant and shared proof that the company was allowed to operate
uninterrupted during the pandemic This includes regulartravelforemployees, despite the closure of the country’s airports and a Gazetted Order by the Ministry of Public Health granting petroleum operations to continue as an ‘essentialservice’.
The Order datedApril 9, 2020 stated “all services shall remain closed except for the following essential serviceswhichmaycarryon operationsfor24hourseach day...electricity and energy
servicesincludingtheoiland gas sector and those who provide services to the oil and gas sector; businesses thatensureglobalcontinuity of supply of mining and petroleum materials and products; mining and petroleum development operations, production and processing; mineral and petroleum exploration and development; mining and petroleum supply and services that support supply chains in the mining and petroleumindustries.”
Weighing in on the subject, the TIGI President told Kaieteur News that the organizationisnotsurprised by the government’s decision as it aligns with theirtendencyofsidingwith Exxon.
Hesaid,“Itisinlinewith how they have been not taking care of the interest of thiscountryandmoreinline with their inclination to facilitateallthingsExxon. It isobviouslythecasewiththe appeal against the judgment that required Exxon to provide full liability coverageforoilspills.Itisin line with the way they behaved when my predecessor, Troy Thomas took action against them for the length of time they gave Exxon for a permit, which wasagainstthelaw.”
Collins pointed out that while it has been the tendency by government to side with the oil companies, its recent decision is no surprise but more so a disappointment He explained that the watchdog body previously penned a series of articles criticizing the provisions of the lopsidedoildeal, addingthat TIGI is now not only disappointed but curious as to the decisions being made in the management of the sector, specifically as it regardstheStabroekBlock.
According to him, “Our disappointmenthasturnedto curiosity given that the government has been claiming- and the opposition-aboutsanctityof contracts. It is the same sanctity of contract that requires 20 percent of the StabroekBlocktobehanded back to the people of this countryafteraspecifictime. It raises curiosity now because the politicians have evensuggestedthatitwould be unsafe from a legal standpoint to challenge the contract but here is a sectionofthecontractwhich places a requirement for Exxontohandbackaportion
of that award, and the government, it imposes a dutyuponthegovernmentto ensurethatthatareahasbeen securedandbeputtoauction toseewhatitisworthforthe peopleofthiscountry.”
He added, “Now that we have, according to the very contract, the opportunity to reclaim to ensure that the resourcesofthiscountryare fairly treated, you are going to extend for another year This is why I’m saying our disappointment should now raise to curiosity Why would any government do that?”
Meanwhile, in pointing to the massive acreage held by Exxon, Collins pointed out that the 20 percent portion to be relinquished is equivalent to 5,360 square kilometers- almost four timesthesizeofanoilblock inneighbouringBrazil.
Tothisend, hereasoned, “You have the opportunity now to take that back, and mindyou,Exxoncanchoose which part they can hand back. They must hand back the 20 percent but they can choose where and the government has decided to dowhat?Itdoesn’tmakeany sense. We should be curious to know what the hell is goingon.”

he could not “bear-up with the situation he was in any longer” before hanging up the phone and that was the last she heard from him on Thursday last.
She had last seen him alive around 08:30hrs on Thursday last when he left their home at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) to ply his trade as a taxi driver at Robb and Light Streets, Georgetown.
Oscar maintained a steady communication with Pedro and all went well until around noon when he received a strange phone call
and drove off.
He called her and told her to go down to his friend’s place and wait for him there.
Oscar said Pedro sounded nervous and when she asked him what was wrong, he told her that he was in trouble with an ex-girlfriend and “someone wanted to jail him”.
Pedro reportedly did not divulge any more details to Annie about his situation and when she offered to help, he insisted that he didn’t want to involve her in his troubles and that she should stay far.
The woman had even recalled him telling her that if
anything happens to him, she should collect his car keys and keep the car in her possession because they were still paying off for it.
The last thing he reportedly said to her before disappearing, was “I have to go and find this girl [the ex-girlfriend] to solve this problem hay now” before hanging up the phone.
Oscar said she called him back but got no answer. She claimed that she kept calling until his phone went dead.
Two days later Pedro was found dead by a fisherman catching iguanas.
