And just like the slaves of America, the Indians of North, Central, and Latin America, the Africans of Africa, and the Indians of India, Guyanese will come to realise that ExxonMobil and Massa Routledge are exactly like the American slave masters and British viceroys and Spanish conquistadores that pillage and plundered other poor, divided places before. Today they come with gifts to grab this country’s gold. Guyana’s gold is its sweet, light liquid Black Gold lying in vast reservoirs and lakes beneath its seabed. The mouths of men water, their eyes mist over, and their hearts turn stone cold. It is business, the business of enslaving contracts, of conspiring ‘house slaves’, and of the whip of words from the likes of Massa Routledge that bite deeply and stir great rage at the injustice of it all. These people are not friends, they are the most ferocious of fiends. Massa Routledge is the leader of the pack.

DEAR EDITOR, Vice President Jadgeo has once again taken to the media to vilify me. On a previous occasion when he reached out to me, I was pellucid that I had no intention of being hospitable to someone who had crassly vilified me, in the Media. His response was “Vincent, is just politics.” I indicated to him that I don’t engage in such politics. Indeed I don’t. In his Press Conference of August 19, 2022, he sought to vilify me for being advertised as a participant in ‘Cuffy 250’s Conference’ because of its theme: ‘The Emerging Apartheid State in Guyana.’ An example of his manner of vilification was to infer that of IDPADA-G’s annual wage bill of “$42M… these are using AfroGuyanese for their own personal benefits.” He challenged me, among others, to hold a Press Conference to account for the DEAR EDITOR, Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, MP, Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, declared that “MY attention was drawn to an invitation to the public, by an organisation describing itself as ‘The Cuffy 250 Committee,” to a forum, that was supposed to be held on Sunday, August 21. This meeting, as we have now learned, has been prematurely postponed or cancelled. The AG added that “The invitation informs that it is the “9th annual forum on the state of African Guyanese.” (And that) Invitees are requested to discuss “Resisting the Emerging Apartheid State.”

3. With regard to IDPADA-G, Jagdeo is patently malicious and libelous in his attempt to project that I am the beneficiary of a limited liability company to which the Government provides a subvention. IDPADA-G is a private not-for-profit company of which, as the elected Chairperson of IDPADA-G, I am a director. There is absolutely no financial returns that I derive. I am an absolute volunteer, who has never received one cent, in any way or fashion, from IDPADA-G. Having sent special auditors in on us, on two occasions, the Government is quite aware of that fact. That apart, we subject the company to audits as are required by the Company’s Act. It is an affront to the 60 odd African Guyanese organisations that comprise IDPADA-G to suggest that there is a small group of beneficiaries who have hoodwinked them.

Considering meeting Jagdeo in Court over character assassination

ExxonMobil, Guyana’s master: Routledge, the new Massa What is shared today must be done in the rawest terms, so that it is imprinted on the consciousness of all Guyanese exactly what is happening to them. It is what has taken root here, grows daily, with greater and greater impacts on our present, our future, and our children’s future. This great national oil wealth that is supposed to bring so much new prosperity to each of us individually, is a great mirage, the smoke, which we see, but never really grasp. This is thanks to the incomparable greed, the endless covetousness, of our oil master, ExxonMobil, and the current New Massa powerfully installed in his lavish Big House, from where he takes stock of Plantation Guyana, while speaking down to his Guyanese slaves and serfs. The commodities before were in the land, and what came from its rich soil: sugar, tobacco, and cotton in the American South. Even the Americans themselves, those who were appalled and repelled enough, were compelled to call it for what it was, which was the ‘odious institution’ of slavery. People robbed of their freedom, their humanity, their dignity, their spirituality, and their beauty for centuries.

In Mexico and Peru, the commodities were gold and silver, which they took away by the overloaded galleon to build their palaces and monuments, while enriching their own communities. The Indian, Inca, Aztec Carib, and Arawak were doomed for extinction due to the superior technology of their invaders, and betrayals at the hands of their own cunning, collaborating brothers with the arriving predators. Africans and Indians were civilised, while they were brutalised and pauperised by the old masters from the pages of history.Oldhistory is making history in today’s new Guyana. It is the Guyana of oil, which means ExxonMobil and all its new, sophisticated technology, modern boats to carry away the oil treasure, and craven local brothers only too delighted to work inside the Big House standing tall and majestic and just as rapacious in Plantation Guyana. Yesterday, it was sugar, in this 21st century, it is this precious commodity that the whole world desires so addictively known as oil. On top of all this wealth in Guyana, a man named Routledge reigns in regal splendor. He is the New Massa. Like the old slave masters, Massa Routledge tells Guyanese how good they have it, how well they are doing, how happy they must be. He has his calculators, his percentages, and his own brand of mysterious mathematics. Also, he ensures that he always walks around with his hymnbook to sing sweet songs to poor, hungry, weak Guyanese to instill false hopes in them. It is of how much they are getting, and how rich they are going to get, and all because ExxonMobil is such a partner giving Guyana its best ever contract. He and ExxonMobil are not partners, they are enslavers filled with fancy talk that enriches their own people, their own workers, their own investors, and their own Guyanesefutures.harbour high hopes, dream bright dreams, that their day will come. Just like the slaves of old, they yearn to break from this bondage of cunning men, like Massa Routledge, who turn their own Guyanese brothers and sisters against them for a few toys, pats on the head.

4. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, not for the first time, requested our registration documents and audited statements, on the morning of Jagdeo’s Press Conference. Due to IDPADAG’s open, accountable and transparent operations, we provided the documents post haste, well aware that mischief was5.afoot.Selective figures were presented from the audited accounts to paint the picture which Jagdeo wished to paint. I am assured that IDPADA-G’s Press Conference will expose Jadgeo’s wicked and malicious assertions.

use of IDPADA-G’s funds. That will be done. But here is an immediate response to his malicious and libelous accusations.1.‘Cuffy 250’ invited me to be a Presenter at its conference. I accepted and will open myself to public scrutiny base on what I will present. Jagdeo’s attack will not deter me from exercising my constitutional right to associate freely and express my 2.views.‘Cuffy 250’ is quite capable of representing itself. I am not, and need not be, a spokesman for ‘Cuffy 250’.

Anil’s justified and legal wrath is centred on the actual theme (that was to be), “Resisting the Emerging Apartheid State,” as a description of conditions in Guyana. Anil embraced Mr. Floyd Haynes’ decision to refuse the invitation to participate, as he too is completely rejecting the odiously untenable and fallacious phrase, ‘Resisting the Emerging Apartheid State’ to describe conditions in Guyana. Haynes seemed livid, stating that “In my view, this statement is a disservice to all Guyanese, as such, I wish to categorically dissociate myself from it. More importantly, I am a firm supporter of His Excellency, the President of Guyana and I am absolutely convinced that

6. For some time now, Jadgeo has been trying to drive wedges among the Guyanese of African descent, and between IDPADA-G and the African Guyanese community. He has tried infiltration, as well as when he addresses African Guyanese audiences, he poses the question: ‘Have you benefitted from the G$100,000,000.00 that were given to Alexander?’ On this occasion, I am actively considering meeting Jagdeo in the Court for his ongoing attempts at character assassination. Yours Vincenttruly,Alexander AG’s debunking of now postponed/ cancelled “Cuffy 250” malicious forum it is not part of the President’s agenda to create any disparity based on race.” Now, comes my take on the issue, and I hope to provoke some serious considerations and responses.First,it is that the AG, almost belatedly came to the ‘party.’ He should have been apprised (like ASAP) of this development. It was well advertised and promoted. So, my umbrage is that the Government media failed to pick up on it, neither did the ‘candid’ and ‘independent’ reporters ‘jump’ on this distasteful and incitingly planned forum with its horrible topic. I mean how come, supposed seasoned and carefully chosen operatives in the PPP/C and the Government by extension, did not see it fit to debunk this blasphemy. I firmly believe that Neaz Subhan’s NCN, Tajeram Mohabir’s Chronicle and the DPI (whoever is in charge) are simply perfunctory, noncombative and ill-equipped. They seem to be lacking in ‘media savvy’ and they are all failing to realise and internalise the ‘real issues’ of the day. As far as outreach goes, the Government media has the tiniest of audiences. A mere walk in the streets of Georgetown will reveal that the NCN’s Voice of Guyana is hardly listened to. It is usually NTN, RGI and Gordon Moseley that people are tuned to. Ask the paper vendors and they will tell you that Kaieteur and Stabroek News carry the selling power. It is not the Chronicle. If you doubt me, send your surveyors to do the field work. Currently, ‘Guyana Times ‘carry the punch’ for the PPP/C.Getting back to the AG, I really do welcome his erudite response on the issue. He was succinct, terse and most importantly, as is his wont, he took a legal stand on the issue. Noting that “Apart from the patent falsehood inherent in the theme, I am of the considered view that the entire discussion, likely to ensue (for now it will not) would be proscribed not only by the ordinary laws of Guyana, but by the supreme law, the Constitution.” He quite accurately informed all that “Apartheid’’ is defined by the New Oxford Dictionary of English as “A policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race.’’ And indeed, as he added, we all know that “Historically, this phrase is used to describe a one-time government policy in South Africa.”What was poignant is that the AG pointed out that “Where Guyana is concerned, Article 149 of the Constitution guarantees protection to every citizen against discrimination on the grounds of race, ethnicity, religion, etc.” Also, we must internalise that “The State of Guyana has signed and ratified every major international treaty in this hemisphere which outlaws racial and ethnic discrimination.”Ithinkthat there should be a “Call In” show, Government sponsored too, where the AG can take calls and educate the public that indeed “Many of these treaties (he alludes to) form part of the Fourth Schedule of the Guyana Constitution ... (and that) Article 154 of that Constitution binds the Executive, the Legislature, the Judiciary and all organs and agencies of Government to respect and uphold those rights … (as) ”All persons, institutions and political parties are prohibited from taking any action or advancing, disseminating or communicating any idea which may result in racial or ethnic division among the people.”Editor, an August 20 letter (in the Kaieteur News, Stabroek News and Guyana Times), “Debunking the evil of Cuffy 250” preceded the AG’s dissertation. The writer was on target and in synchrony with the AG. He invoked the Government’s clear-cut policy of nodiscrimination. He pointed to what is happening within (Continued on page 5)

Rights of Amerindians should be highlighted during Heritage Month to govern our communities in regards to lands, mining and logging, etc. For example, the local Amerindian Act 2006, and international Declarations sanctioned by the United Nation in regards to Indigenous Peoples culture and languages; and Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) that deals with decision-making processes without pressure and intimidation brought to bear uponThecommunities.teachingmethods of the above topics to students can be executed in the form of quiz, spelling competitions, and even debates among students in Secondary schools.Iam sure the Amerindian Act is a good moot to debate on, that can generate intellectual discussions and reflections regarding Indigenous laws and governance in communities. Students’ engagement in such learning activities can be inspired to become lawyers and Anthropologist and other professionals as Indigenous people. Furthermore, the pedagogical process will require teachers to do the research along with children to find answers which can be a significant learning experience from an academic aspect, to observe heritage celebration in Guyana.

DEAR EDITOR, Reluctantly and unfortunately, I have no other option than to attempt through this medium to get help, having exhausted all others.Iapplied for a refund on the deposit I paid for a meter at the house I owned. This was before October last year. In fact I had two meters, but being unable to locate the receipt for the earlier one (since around late 90’s) I have given up on that, even though I am of the view that GPL should have records to refund that deposit. Since around October, I From page 4 the country in the areas of land-distribution/titling and education. What was very timely was his reminder of the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant, where Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand vowed that each child in the public school system would benefit from this yearly and everincreasing rollout. Priya, the writer noted, emphatically emphasised that “Whether you’re African, Chinese, IndoGuyanese, Amerindian, Portuguese, Mixed, you will leave here with your cash grant because we’re not asking about your ethnicity. This morning, whether you are Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Rastafarian, nothing or Bahá?í, once your children are in school, you will leave here with the cash grant.” Again, to the AG, who went full-throttle in delineating that the current Administration is most averse to anything discriminatory. So let me finish off by going back

DEAR EDITOR, Kindly allow my thoughts on the education cash grant for which I wish to express kudos to the Ministry of Education. The Minister of Education implemented (yet again) a delivery mechanism that sits way above the corruption that embeds similar programmes by other Ministries. The use of school records ensured that the monies were directed to the correct recipients, and using the schools as distribution centres also provided the relevant checks and balances. Not only was the exercise very effective, it was also transparent and provided an audit trail. Notably, for the successive years of the programme, there were audits done - for which we await the release to make final pronouncements. What Minister Manickchand and her Ministry have risen above is what the rest of the Government is bogged down with - that is, corruption, lack

AG’s debunking of now postponed... to the Rodney Commission of Inquiry.Ithink our memory is fresh. It was in May 2016, and only after lots of dalliance from the then APNU+AFC Government and some three months after the Commission of Inquiry Report was received that the said APNU+AFC government, that it was finally handed over to the then House Speaker, Dr. Barton Scotland, to be properly laid in the National Assembly. I add that pressure from then the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) led to this, and even so, erstwhile Attorney General, Basil Williams insisted that the Report was flawed and will be challenged. This begs the logical question, “Which Government is pro-African?”

Yours Deodattruly,Singh

In signing off, I challenged readers to cogitate on the reality that a total of over three decades of rulership was in the hands of the PNC and APNU combined. In all of these years, Afro-Guyanese were left indigent and their villages, at times, were like ghost towns. Contrast all of this with what are now the happenings in Golden Grove, Buxton, Agricola and Linden, etc. I rest my case with reminders that I wish for a call-in programme with the AG leading the way, and for the Government media to be more pro-active, profound and immediate.

HRegards,NNawbatt

Tuesday August 23, 2022 Kaieteur News PAGE 5

The details of that saga show that even before this Report was laid out, that the PNC/R, the main component of the Opposition Coalition at that time, avowed repeatedly that it was not going to participate in the Commission of Inquiry into the death of Walter Rodney. So, yet again, my question looms up, “Who is really on the side of AfroGuyanese?” And therefore, “From whence cometh the idea of an ‘Emerging Apartheid’ State?” May I remind people, as did the AG, that this country is the vanguard antidiscriminatory land, as “Guyana’s constitution establishes a broad-based Ethnic Relations Commission to which the citizenry can complain against racial, ethnic, and other forms of discrimination” Also, that “The (said) Commission has a wide plenitude of powers to investigate those complaints and to take remedial actions.”

DEAR EDITOR, Next month September will be Amerindian Heritage month in Guyana. A time to celebrate our cultures and traditions and recognise our contribution as Indigenous people in this country. The month’s celebration will be packed with activities showcasing our arts, music, culinary and beauty pageants, etc -which are all fantastic things that represents our unique and valuable contributions to the Guyanese public and the world. Most in Guyana will look forward to the month of September and the activities to make some money and to rekindle the sentiment of being proud Indigenous Guyanese.Thecultural extravaganza will be the highlight of the month’s celebrations throughout the country where the social event will be entertainment and time to have fun as we say in Guyana. However, during the four weeks celebration, schools will be Andreopened.assuch perhaps it would be good to inculcate the following education to our children since most of us adults don’t know the local laws and rights that are there to protect and help us. Thus, as part of next month’s heritage celebrations it would be good for children in interior schools to learn of the laws and rights that exist

The Education Ministry is teaching the Government of Guyana of transparency, nepotism and cronyism. The rest of the Ali administration needs to get extra lessons from the folks at the Ministry of Education!Onanother note, I wish to voice my personal support for the return of schoolbooks to the schools. It is irresponsible to hoard these books that would not be used again by the child. Indeed, we should not be TOLD to return the books – instead, we should return and pass on text and other schoolbooks to schools and other children. We cannot, on the one hand, beat the Government up for their poor handling of environmental concerns and on the other hand refuse to hand over reusable books. Let us save some trees! At the same time, the overall economic impact of reprinting these books every year is on us all as taxpayers. Enabling the return and reuse of books will save us all. In conclusion, Minister Manickchand has made some admirable strides in keeping above the corruption that the rest of the Administration are happy to wallow in. Thank you for the well-implemented system. To my fellow Guyanese brothers, sisters and children: Save and return books, please. Dr.Regards,YogMahadeo

Ogunseye’s repeated and careless resort to a divisive mantra in a society characterised by ethnic insecurity and political polarisation not only fits perfectly with a narrative that reflects intellectual stagnation, it is combustible andInhazardous.casehehasn’t noticed it, in his letter, Ogunseye portrays himself as both victim and struggler with the same old, same old narrative. It in this context, that he fails to recognise that since August 2020, and their experience with the vagaries of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guyanese from all walks of life have decidedly moved on with their lives economically. That apart, Guyanese today are more roundly educated than they were in the past when the soil was fertile for such obstructionist thinking to germinate.

While the overarching sense of identity of African Guyanese has assumed a more enlightened approach as manifested in the observance of Emancipation Day and its various cultural manifestations, the thickened and non-expansive approach to African advancement by Ogunseye has depreciated significantly so much so that Guyanese of other ethnic back grounds participate fully and with a sense of togetherness in the annual Emancipation Day’s observances. It is this kind of togetherness shown by the Guyanese people that demonstrates joy not anger, empathy and purpose as well as a predisposition for problem-solving as their preference rather than be shackled to an axe to grind and to be trapped in an echochamber of Ogunseye’s making.Instead of fanning the flames of race in our delicately balanced multi-ethnic society, Ogunseye should join in the common search to find ways to balance different values and interests in our pluralistic society. The enigmatic Buxtonian chose to rail against my appointment as a newly appointed Commissioner of GECOM and sought to extract juice from my comments and to mix it with paranoia and hatred for the politics of the AccordingPPP/C.toOgunseye, my ‘message is crystal clear’. He claims that; ‘The PPP wants the composition of GECOM’s staff to changethere are too many Africans.’

DEAR EDITOR, U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney is down. Barring some miracle, the Wyoming Republican’s political career may also be over; done and gone. I think Liz Cheney knew that, despite her hard rock Republican pedigree, she is out for the count, given the pathological fanaticisms of tens of millions of Americans for the bizarre one, who occupied the White House. Yet, she was willing to lay allpolitical future, personal aspirations, possible positive contributions-on the line in what was clearly losing effort, a suicidal mission. She lost. I laud this woman, I admire a rare great American, when great Americans are endangered. I salute this Spartan warrior returning home on her shield. As I absorb her courage under fire, her political integrity for speaking raw truths, I think of Guyana, and regret the loss of character and the selfrespecting like a Liz Cheney in our national politics. I recognise partisan politics in her supporting the former President in 2016. It was a low moment, a casualty of tactical cohesion and her times. She could have stayed with the crowd, and walk dishonourably. She didn’t. It was too much, for some, certain lines are not crossed, matters never taken that far. She would have ensured that she endured, it was guaranteed. With this in mind, I think of national stalwarts here who are as erratic as they come, Nero and Caligula to the core, with a blood brother equivalent to the former White House occupant. I ask where are the male and female Liz Cheney(s) in Guyana? The man or woman of courage, of honour, of ethics, who stands up and stands for something, other than the sordid, the selfperpetuating, the cultish, regardless how roguish. There are those pretending at legal eagles, but are very much at home with the buzzards where backbone is concerned. Out of sympathy, I do not twist the stiletto, and point to the missing fearlessness that should be present amidst corruptions, failures. Stand for something, other than bellowing blusters and barrels echoing hollowlynothingChallengeinside.domestic gods for weakness, illness, dreadfulness, smallness. Be men, not chowmein. I note scholars. When I look at how kowtowing in obsequious deference, I prefer to be unlettered, unscholarly in my illiteracy. What office, what prestige, what mountain of money could compel such abandonment of intellect, character, one’s soul? There is none of any of those that are sufficient to intrigue, to diminish. I sense not men of high learning, but of unequalled yearning. How is it that neither lawmen nor book-wise men can see no wrong in all the with,hardscrabblethatthedreadfulaliendepartmentunaddressedhimselfman’sman,shouldcravingthatlifetimeyearning,Achillesenough.notPhDsofconsciences?consciousness,thatimperiouslyarefinancialskullduggeries,debaucheries,leadershiptheallegedimproprieties?Whytheyecstatictoremainimpervioustoallsaturatesatmosphere,Whithereitherthelattertwo?Idon’tneedtodiscernfollies.Still,Iseesomerarelight;brightray,butpiercingEverymanhashisheel,hisprice,hiswhichpromptsaofcrawlingweakness,imbecilicsubservience,dependency.Ilookattheofficialbigthenumberoneinablindnoman’sland,butheisbestleftinthehonoursforthatissuchancommodity.Anotherlossinthepriceofpyrrhicpoliticalvictoriesthiscountryekesout,thissocietylivesmustendure.Iwoulddothiseffort injustice, if I were to ignore the women in this pantheon of the rankest partisans -all for one, and one for all, come what may. No matter how dastardly, how ugly, how costly to this woeful nation. Regrettably, the United States Ambassador has completed her last Florence Nightingale round in the salvaging ward that is Guyana. Specifically, I think of the lady, the medicine woman with the compassionate portfolio. And I ask what about thee too, how about thee, in this nasty, sickly, brew that poisons party, people, and the possible prosperities of our times; I add the properties still residual in our besmirched souls. Somebody has to raise their hands. Some man, some woman, and say: enough is enough. It is time to separate, to go against the tide, in what is sure to be hard fall in a lost cause. But when all is done, when all is remembered and written after the scattered shards have been collected somehow and put together somehow, then there will be awe and admiration that Guyana had someone as graceful and filled with grandeur like Liz Cheney. Yes, the devil himself sometimes must be fought in hell. Even when there is no hope of winning at all. Where are our guardians, warriors, tribunes?

As far as I am aware, the PPP has never said what Ogunseye claims nor did I in my remarks. It is as if he has convinced himself that what he saw was a duck, then a duck is all he would see. I make no pretense that electoral reforms in general and institutional reforms at GECOM in particular, in whatever shape or form are badly needed in light of our March to August 2020 experience.During that period, Ogunseye was deliberately and uncannily silent about the need to remove as it were, the dead, damaged and infected flesh from the decaying electoral practices of the APNU+AFC and to expose the democratic process to healthy tissue as currently obtains. My appointment as a Commissioner at GECOM has so infuriated Ogunseye that it’s announcement literally threw a wrench upsetting his ominous ‘demonstration of solidarity’ forcing him to express publicly his disagreement with the PPP’s and government’s decision. Because the age of maturity and enlightenment has not penetrated the deep recesses of Ogunseye’s psyche, his language is not surprising. His failure to move away from bitterness and anger towards a more constructive engagement with the democratic opening that emerged in August of 2020 defeats his organisation’s call for a ‘political solution’ published in June 15, 2022 in sections of the media.Inhisletter of August 19, Ogunseye failed convincingly to come to terms with the big picture in which Guyana now features prominently on the world stage.Ogunseye is obviously unhappy with what he described as my ‘return to public political life’ as if it were he who had consigned me elsewhere. He falls back on his usual diatribe about the PPP/C’s ‘racially discriminatory policies,’ its ‘false reality denial cry,’ and describing Guyana elsewhere as a ‘criminalised state,’ and a ‘full blown dictatorship.’ I am sure he would have listened attentively to Vice President Jagdeo’s recent Press Conference where he clearly enumerated the new laws that are coming with respect to the holding of future elections in Guyana. Further, Ogunseye must have heard about the PPP/C government’s concrete efforts to empower our African Guyanese brothers and sisters and their children by granting scholarships, small business grants, more lands and affordable housing and generous cash grants to members of the joint services.

DEAR EDITOR, In Yesterday’s Kaieteur News, GHK Lall wrote that he will go “where gods hesitate.” Many readers, such as myself, accept that Mr. Lall is a reliable voice for the PNC and the coalition, and is a critic of the PPP government. Sunday, his column transcends the usual dribble, from the ridiculous to the dangerous. Mr. Lall wrote that, “I think the word ‘apartheid’ has meaning, substance, traction in today’s Guyana.” Briefly explained, Apartheid was a system that denied black and non-white South African basic civil rights, such as the right to Does Apartheid exists in Guyana? vote and high level jobs in government and elsewhere, etc. Inter-racial marriages were not permitted and there was widespread segregation. It was a system where the minority population dominated the majority of coloured people politically, socially, and economically. Does this system exist in Guyana? Anyone who responds yes, insults the memory of the 20,000 black South Africans who were grotesquely murdered under the savagery of apartheid. GHK Lall should be ashamed of himself! ChitrakhaRegards, Persaud

DEAR EDITOR, As I was busying myself getting down to my responsibility as a newly appointed Commissioner of the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM), my attention was drawn to Tacuma Ogunseye’s letter to the editor in the August 19, 2022 edition of S/N; ‘Rohee’s message is crystal clear.’ I usually do not reply to letters referring to me as racist and especially when the letters are laced with racial innuendoes. In that regard, the content and objective of Ogunseye’s letter are crystal clear. The imputation of ill-will couldn’t be more transparent.

With Guyana recording its first case of MonkeyPox, citizens have begun to worry about its possible spread. Here are a few facts about the disease.

Symptoms typically last between 2 to 4 weeks and go away on their own without treatment. If you think you have symptoms that could be monkeypox, seek advice from your health care provider. Let them know if you have had close contact with someone who has suspected or confirmed monkeypox.

The manifestation of monkeypox typically includes fever, intense headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, swollen lymph nodes, and a skin rash or lesions. The rash usually begins within one to three days of the start of a fever. Lesions can be flat or slightly raised, filled with clear or yellowish fluid, and can then crust, dry up and fall off. The number of lesions on one person can range from a few to several thousand. The rash tends to be concentrated on the face, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. They can also be found on the mouth, genitals, and eyes.

Come back to do what? in relation to the cancellation of some webinars which were supposed to be held. Were these webinars held? If not, whyThenot? Government announced that a new information sharing platform, as a channel of information between Government and the diaspora, was going to be created. Has this been done and if not why not? A conference was also to be held to target second and third generation Guyanese in the diaspora. Has this been done? If not, why not? One of the objectives of the Diaspora Affairs Unit was to establish a database which will profile Guyanese in the different parts of the diaspora. Has this database been established as yet? If not, why Anothernot?objective was to establish a one-stop-shop for overseas based Guyanese who may wish to engage in investment, trade, philanthropy or make contributions to Guyanese communities. Has this onestop-shop been established? If not, why not. Does the Guyana Government have a list of projects for which they are seeking investment from the diaspora? If not, why not? At the Virtual Diaspora Conference, investors in the diaspora were told that there were plenty of opportunities available. They were also advised to explore joint ventures with local counterparts. But was a portfolio of specific projects identified for investment by the Surely, diaspora.the disadvantage which is faced by potential investors in the diaspora is that they are not in Guyana and therefore may not be au fait with the specific opportunities available. By now Government should have learnt that when you are inviting persons to invest, you have to have a list of bankable projects in which these investors can sink their investments.TheGuyana Office for Investment (GOINVEST) had identified a list of 55 ways to invest in Guyana. But this list is not specific to diaspora investment and dealt mainly with opportunities in the various sectors rather than specific and feasible projects. Guyanese based in Trinidad and Tobago are now being wooed to come back. But to what? Just after the Virtual Diaspora Conference, overseas based Guyanese were told pointblank that there are no high paying jobs in the Government to be had. But some Guyanese are not looking for high paying jobs? Some want to give back to the country and others want to contribute at senior level within the government. The Government has been giving overseas based Guyanese senior positions in the administration. An official was brought back from overseas and appointed as a Minister. Another person working in Rome was given the top job at the Guyana Mission in New York and job. And a Commissar from the diaspora has been given a healthy contract at one of the country’s overseas consulates. The Government’s point man in the oil and gas sector returned from the United States. So there are high level, but not necessarily high paying jobs available. But for whom are these jobs reserved?

The President of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, is reported to have called on Guyanese resident in Trinidad and Tobago, to come back home to support the country’s development. Guyanese living and working in Trinidad are not going to come back when there are no suitable jobs for them? So why are they being invited? Where are the jobs for them? The Government which promised to create 50,000 new jobs has implicitly acknowledged that there is a problem with unemployment. It has therefore been forced to create part time and temporary jobs paying US$200 per month for Guyanese. Which Guyanese based in Trinidad and Tobago is going to come to Guyana to work for US$200 per month? But when I look at the prize money, I think we still got some discrimination there, because if we are saying that this is the first women’s tournament, it can’t be $50,000 for first prize. So, personally, I will contribute to raising this first prize from $50,000 to at least $100,000.So,I think what we are doing here is sending a strong message to our females; so, even though we are starting with four teams, we expect the category to grow, and hopefully by next year, we have increased prize money and maybe eight teams,” the PM stated. He explained that female cricket is growing not only internationally, but in Guyana as well, and as part of this development, the PMT 20 Cup wants to play its part in growing the sport.
