Mahdia youth found dead Mother of two charged for in trail with stab wounds stealing from employer
Police in the interior are hunting for a Mahdia resident who they believe could shed some light on the murder of his brother, whose body was discovered yesterday along a trail at Blackwater Backdam, Konawaruk. According to the police, the body of 20-year-old Nickel Leacock, of 111 Miles, Mahdia, was discovered at about 07:45 hours with suspected stab wounds. Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Leacock and his brother were drinking with another man at a shop late Monday night.
They eventually left the shop after it was closed for business. Investigators are working on the theory that Leacock and his brother had an argument which might have led to a violent confrontation that turned fatal. L e a c o c k ’s brother could not be located to be questioned by detectives. They have detained the other man who was last seen with the brothers, but up to late last night he had not provided investigators with any vital information.
A 25-year-old mother of two was granted $80,000 bail after she was charged for stealing from her employer. Melissa Premnauth, of Lot 27 Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara, is accused of stealing $175,000 between June 9 and July 12, last from her employer, Gafsons Industries Limited at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.
She pleaded not guilty when she appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The facts of the case were not presented. At the end of the short hearing, Premnauth, a first-time offender, was granted bail and the case is set to be called at the Providence Magistrates’ Court on October 6 for statements.
Labourer on burglary charge granted bail A man accused of breaking into a woman’s home in Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara and carting off with over $760,000 in cash, jewellery and other valuables was granted bail when he appeared in court yesterday. Rolwyn Boston, 26, of Second Field, Kaneville, East Bank Demerara was granted $150,000 bail on a Break and Enter and Larceny charge by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was charged with breaking into Grace Innis’
home on June 19, last, and making off with a gas bottle, computer, DVD player, PC Tablet, two bottles of cologne and $175,000 cash. The items listed in the charge amounted to $766,400. The facts of the case were not revealed in court but Police Prosecutor, Corporal Seon Blackman objected to bail citing the value of the articles and the punishment attached to the crime. He revealed that the police are investigating similar matters where Boston is the suspect. Boston was granted bail and the case is set to be called
Accused: Rolwyn Boston again on October 22, at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.

THE INTIMIDATION OF MEDIA WORKERS MUST BE CONDEMNED It is not a case of taking it how you want to take it. In any part of the world, if you tell someone that you are going to “deal with” them, that is a threat. If in Guyana, someone tells you that they are going to “deal with you”, that is considered to be a threat. If you report that threat to the police, they are going to arrest the person making that threat and charge them with threatening language. A report was filed to the police concerning alleged threats that were made to
reporters at a press conference hosted by the Guyana Forestry Commission. It is left to be seen whether the police will arrest the person allegedly making those threats and pass that person through the Courts. I would not be surprised if the persons to whom those specific threats were directed decide that they no longer wish to work for the media houses that presently employ them. In the case of Kaieteur News, this latest incident comes soon after another
unrelated incident in which men in a highly-tinted dark vehicle were seen photographing the building that houses this newspaper’s headquarters. The Guyana Press Association said nothing at the time. It is hoped that it will now condemn the threats made to “deal with” Kaieteur News, Stabroek News, and specific reporters. I hope also that the body will condemn the fact that the Guyana Forestry Commission allowed persons not associated with the media to
Dem boys seh...
Our leaders clutching at anything now Mouth can seh anything. That is why some people does mek empty statements. Philip Bynoe open he mouth and talk how he bringing 400 people fuh picket de Waterfalls paper. Well dem boys seh that he woulda mek front page. Whole day Tuesday de Waterfalls paper waiting. De Waterfalls paper go through a lot standing up fuh de Guyanese people suh nutten like threats, abuses and intimidation gun stop dem from wha de Creatah send dem to do. That is why dem gun continue to dig and dig to get to de bottom of de corruption. But is de people who leading we who got people talking. Imagine that de government instead of defending de Guyanese people decide to defend de foreigners. And to mek matters worse de government resorting to terror tactics. It got to be that dem running scared. In case people want to know wha gat dem frighten, is de dutty deals that dem do and dem frighten that dem deals come to light. That is why dem clutching at anything. Imagine dem lean pun a man like Bynoe. That surely show that dem clutching at straws. De thing is that dem is de ones who benefitting from de foreigners in de logging companies and dem don’t care if de country ain’t get nutten. That is not selfishness. That is corruption of de highest order. Dem is de people who does get jail in any other country. Dem boys seh that de time

De people who running fuh defend de foreign logging companies get kickbacks, kick up and kick front, while de Guyanese people get kick down. Dem boys hear that in nuff cases people collecting US$10,000 and some collecting US$20,000 fuh each shipment of logs. Is about de same price dem collecting fuh visas and foreign work permits. This got to stop. Talk half and know that this is de worst de Pee Pee Pee get in dem 22 years in power.
be part of its press conference and to intimidate media houses when they were asking questions. This is totally unacceptable. But it is not unprecedented. Following the 1997 elections which the PNC lost, the press conferences hosted at Congress Place were allowed to be overrun by all kinds of elements. These elements swarmed the location and this led to journalists being encircled and intimidated. In most cases, journalists from the State-owned media were afraid to open their mouths for fear of being mugged and otherwise abused by the elements that were being allowed to be part of those conferences. Indeed in one instance the video camera of one State-owned company was taken away from a member of the media by criminal elements that disappeared into the safe haven of Congress Place. The expensive equipment was never recovered. There was open intimidation of government-owned journalists during that period.
This led to State-owned media houses being afraid to cover PNC-organized marches and demonstrations. One would have presumed that the government would have tried to avoid repeating such an unsavoury history. Just why the Guyana Forestry Commission would have allowed certain elements from outside of the media to be at its press conference is beyond comprehension. Just why also it would have allowed those persons to openly intimidate the journalists of both the Stabroek News and the Kaieteur News is also incomprehensible. The Guyana Forestry Commission was keen to defend its stewardship of the forestry sector. It opted to do so in the context of what it saw as unwarranted attacks by certain media houses. In defending its record, it needed to ensure that it did so by availing the media of not only the facts as the Guyana Forestry Commission sees it, but also by allowing the media to freely pose questions and clarify issues. It should never have
allowed persons outside of the media into a press conference, much less elements that openly intimidated the members of certain media houses. This was a colossal mistake for which the Guyana Forestry Commission, if it is truly independent, should apologize. The Guyana Forestry Commission has shot itself in the foot. It needed to get its message over. A press conference was called so that this message could be transmitted to the public through the media. Why then invite elements whose behaviour turned counterproductive to the Guyana Forestry Commission’s objective. It just goes to show the level of political desperation of the government. It is clutching at straws. It is desperate to ride out the storm that has erupted over the operations of Bai Shan Lin. And in its desperation, it has desecrated a press conference.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
No money, no sex baby; that’s how we play It would be an enormous learning experience to get inside the head of people like Rickey Singh, Dr. Compton Bourne (recipient of Guyana’s Order of Excellence and former CEO of the Caribbean Development Bank), Muslim priest, Fazeel Feroze, the head of the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG), Dr. David Dabydeen, Professor Clement Sankat of UWI, just to name a few Surely, there must be a moral limit that all humans place on a government they support and the belief is that this limit should not be exceeded. Of the names mentioned here, the most infamous one must be Rickey Singh. Singh has spent a lifetime derogating former President Forbes Burnham and his PNC Government. What is wrong with that? Well, they say who feels it, knows it. Singh will probably argue that he was victimized by President Burnham and saw other Guyanese oppressed by Mr. Burnham, so he believes that the recording of history should go on. It is difficult to deny Singh his conceptual framework.
But his logics, desire to record history, and his ethics go out the window when in the same breath, he supports leaders and governments in Guyana that have done worse than Mr. Burnham. A simple analogy is relevant. You stole my car and therefore I will continue to tell people not to trust you as a mechanic, because I left my car in your workshop and you stole it. It so happens I have a brother who gives me money from the sale of cars he pilfers from his customers. I have no credibility to criticize you, because my brother and you are made from the same dirty, thieving cloth. This is my moral revulsion of people like Rickey Singh. The Burnham regime had far more urbaneness, moral standing, etiquette and basic human decency than the PPP regime from 1999 to the present time. How can Rickey Singh support a government whose leaders abuse their wives, go down to the level of the gutter, and have no manners whatsoever? And these people have the gall to vilify Forbes Burnham. This columnist
lived under Mr. Burnham’s rule and I say unapologetically, never would Mr. Burnham verbally abuse his wife so openly in public as Mr. Jagdeo did. When you look at the distastefulness of the PPP Government from 1999 onwards, surely, they have crossed that moral line. How can people like the names mentioned above have anything to do with the Jagdeo presidency and the members of his political entourage who have been carried over into the Ramotar presidency? There is the Jagdeo wife incident and also the horrible case of a Cabinet Minister telling the nation by way of his press conference, “When I hear de press talking about a Minister who does illegal things, I thought ya’ll referring to this minister, because I is a man who like to do illegal tings.” This is one of the numbest moments for me in politics and this reference to it here is perhaps the sixth time I have mentioned it in my columns. Take Charles Ramson (see my last Friday column). This man was a former Minister of Legal Affairs and a Court of
Appeal judge. He presently holds a highly important public office, the kind reserved for former high-level judges as in the case of the office of the Ombudsman. He is the Commissioner of Information created out of the Freedom of Information Act. In refusing the request for a certain public document from the local chapter of Transparency International, Mr. Justice Ramson in his response explained that the opposition cut the allocation to his office in the 2014 budget (which the government restored in May of this year) and therefore his
office cannot function. Then in the same letter he resorted to a sexual innuendo by quoting from a Mighty Sparrow calypso in which a man wanted sex, but the woman told him he had to pay first for it. She told him in the calypso, “No money, no love.” Where was the relevance of that calypso quote? Simply put, Justice Ramson had descended to a highly unbecoming level. It is shocking that Justice Ramson, given the nature of his public office and his background of a former Court of Appeal judge, would resort to that kind of analogy. And
Frederick Kissoon not in a private e-mail, but in an open letter to one of Guyana’s most eminent human rights bodies, Transparency Institute. This is the kind of behaviour that characterizes the PPP in government. How can any decent citizen support such miasmic outpouring in the function of government?
Trinidad authorities rescue 14 Guyanese trafficking victims (Trinidad Express) - The Counter Trafficking Unit (CTU) has advised that human trafficking is a serious crime and should be reported. This follows the discovery of 14 Guyanese nationals at a business place in Central Trinidad. The CTU led a team of officers from the Ministry of Labour’s labour inspectorate, Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and National Operations Centre (NOC) air division to several locations in Chase Village, Chaguanas, last Thursday. The officers found 14 Guyanese nationals, who were taken for screening to determine whether they were victims of labour trafficking. A Ministry of National
Security release stated several documents were seized from the business place. Further enquiries revealed that four of the Guyanese nationals were illegal immigrants. They were handed over to the Immigration Division for further processing. “CTU, in conjunction with the labour inspectorate, identified several labour violations, including the absence of work permits, lack of payment of overtime wages and an inadequate wage register,” the release stated. It was pointed out that the CTU continues to work closely with local and international partners to counter human trafficking in Trinidad and Tobago. “At a recent convening of
the National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons, several ministers of government agreed to support the provision of all the necessary resources and staffing required by the unit for the most appropriate victim care and assistance and for effective investigation of human trafficking,” the ministry stated. Police said 14 illegal immigrants were also detained at five businesses in Mon Desir, South Oropouche, during a police raid. A team of officers, attached to the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF), conducted an exercise throughout the district from Sunday to yesterday.

Labour Market Survey conducted in keeping with TVET mandate - aims to address “universal dilemma”
A section of the gathering at the seminar yesterday. In keeping with the National Policy on Technical, Vocational and Education Training (TVET), there is a need for information to be collected on competencies and emerging trends in the labour market. And achieving this mandate could in fact be done through various studies and other measures that are certainly not confined to traditional occupational classifications. Moreover, Labour Market Intelligence surveys are among the mechanisms that can be undertaken to meet the TVET mandate. The importance of this process was particularly amplified yesterday even as the findings of a report on a 2014 Labour Market Intelligence Survey were presented during a seminar at the National Centre for Education Resource Development, Kingston,
Georgetown. The seminar, which targeted strategic persons within industries, was held by the Ministry of Labour in collaboration with the TVET Council. Key among the features of the seminar was the presentation of the findings of a Labour Market Survey conducted by the Statistical Unit of the Labour Ministry. The survey, which was conducted in the 10 administrative regions of the country, benefited from financial and technical support from the InterAmerican Development Bank. Speaking at the forum yesterday was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Reverend Patrick Findlay, who informed that the objective of the survey was to determine if there are any gaps which may exist for skills in five particular sectors
of the economy. The targeted sectors were construction, engineering, forestry, manufacturing, hotel hospitality and commercial trade. Findlay in his deliberations pointed out that the issue of absence of imperial data on the Guyana Labour Market is one that has been voiced regularly, even as he stressed that “institutions, such as the Council for TVET, require up-to-date data which will inform plans from relevant skills training programmes.” This is light of the fact, he observed, that there have been youths leaving educational institutions in need of jobs that are not readily available, a situation that constitutes a “universal dilemma.” But although the survey is a step in the right direction, Findlay informed that the situation is even farther
reaching as “employers are complaining that persons graduating from Vocational skills training institutions are not suitably trained to perform on the job which indicates a mismatch between what persons are trained to do and what the labour market requires.” This development, Findlay said, has amplified the need for the country to have adequately skilled workers. “I am of the opinion that there are other areas where collaborations can take place as it pertains to skills training for improved production and productivity,” the Permanent Secretary said. He therefore noted that coupled with skills training, entrepreneurship should be encouraged so that after training, persons are prepared to establish their own businesses. “At this juncture of our history here in Guyana, we need to develop a highly skilled workforce...” “My own experience in the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, as former head of the Men’s Affairs Bureau, having had the opportunity to traverse this dear land of ours with youths, especially in secondary schools in fourth and fifth forms... I am convinced that we need to consider improving the attitude of young men and women towards work...training may not be enough,” said Findlay.
Labour Ministry Permanent Secretary, Reverend Patrick Findlay
And according to Assistant Chief Education Officer (Technical), Patrick Chinedu, who also attended the forum yesterday, the Education Ministry will be seeking to enhance workforce training at the level of the secondary schools. This will therefore see the Ministry proactively offering career guidance to secondary school students, he added, even as he noted that the findings of Labour Market Intelligence “will very much help us in guiding those students.” In presenting the findings yesterday, Mr Ivelaw Henry, Chief Statistical Officer of the Ministry of the Labour Ministry said that the Ministry has in fact been doing several surveys over
the years. Among the areas that have gained focus are: occupational wages, hours of work and skill level, Henry disclosed. But although strategic efforts have been made to better understand what obtains in the labour force, the Chief Statistical Officer noted that “we have been at the back in terms of our Labour Market Intelligence in Guyana; the reason being that we should be collecting regular labour force surveys but we have not been doing so...” In fact, Henry said that based on available information, Guyana is the only country within the Caribbean Region that has not been Continued on page 24

Footballer accused of drug trafficking on $150,000 bail Footballer, Sheikh Kamal, who was reportedly busted with marijuana during a football match in Kamarang last week, was granted $150,000 bail when he appeared in court yesterday to respond to a drug trafficking charge. Kamal of Lot 58 ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown denied the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was charged with having 37 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking last Friday at Kamarang, Upper Mazaruni. The footballer was represented by Attorney-atLaw Mark Conway who made an application for reasonable bail. Conway explained that
the police had conducted a search during a football match where there were about 50 persons present. The lawyer’s claim was refuted by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis who said that although the search was conducted during a football match, Kamal was the only one present where the drug was found. Innis told the court that Kamal was arrested and taken to the nearest police station. Further investigations led to him being charged for drug trafficking. Notwithstanding the Prosecution’s application for the footballer to remain in custody, the Magistrate granted him bail. The case is set to be called before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry on October 7.

The farmer pleaded guilty to Simple Larceny. The Prosecution was represented by Police Corporal Aduni Innis. Vlissengen Road killers caught on camera...
Suspected gunman arrested Police have detained the son of a well-known individual in connection with Monday’s brazen killing of dredge owner Ashook Ragghu, and say that images of the gunmen on surveillance cameras appear to link him and an accomplice to the crime. Kaieteur News understands that the two bandits, who rode a CG motorcycle, were not wearing helmets at the time, and a police source said surveillance cameras, located nearby, gave investigators “very good” images of the suspects. “We have very good stuff (images)…we are now putting the pieces together,” an official said. Police have detained at least five individuals from areas that include East Ruimveldt, Albouystown, Agricola and Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. A brief police release issued yesterday stated that “a suspect in the robbery/ murder of businessman Ashook Ragghu which occurred yesterday on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, has been arrested. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.” Ragghu, of Pike Street, Campbellville, was shot in the chest, while his wife,
Onlookers next to the vehicle in which the couple was shot. Shyrazadi Ragghu, was shot in the right thigh, at around 14:40 hrs on Monday, after two gunmen on a motorcycle cornered them at the Vlissengen Road and Regent Road traffic light. The robbers escaped with a bag containing an undisclosed sum of cash and the slain man’s licenced handgun. Mr. Ragghu has a gold mining operation at Arimu backdam, Cuyuni, and the family recently moved from Berbice to Georgetown.
According to reports, Ragghu had picked up his wife from a city bank and the gunmen, who were apparently trailing the couple, made their move when the victims, heading south along Vlissengen Road, were forced to stop at the traffic light near the Botanical Gardens. Kaieteur News understands that the gunmen rode up to the couple’s Toyota Carina, PGG 8291, and tried to relieve the businessman of his money. The dredge owner reportedly
decided to fight back and the gunmen shot him. Reports indicate that Mr. Ragghu was unable to get to his firearm since the weapon was in the same money-bag. Eyewitnesses recalled seeing Mrs. Ragghu screaming in the car with her husband slumped in the driver’s seat. Kaieteur News understands that a passing taxi driver took the couple to the GPHC where doctors pronounced Ragghu dead. His wife remains hospitalised.

Facebook “friend” lures accountant to South, brutalises him, hijacks car An accountant employed at Humphrey’s Bakery remains hospitalised as a result of being beaten unconscious before his car was hijacked by a bandit in Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt, last Wednesday. Christopher Ally, of James Street, Albouystown, has for a week now been nursing injuries to the head and about the body, but is said to be in a stable condition in the Male Surgical Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The 28-year-old yesterday related the series of events that led to his misfortune. According to Ally, he was engaged in an online relationship with a girl who identified herself as “Princess Lisa” on the social media website Facebook. Ally said that “Lisa”, who never told him her full name, became very close to him during the past four months,

as they frequently texted and called each other. Ally alleged that it was “Lisa” who coordinated the well-schemed hijacking of his vehicle, a Nissan Bluebird. According to the accountant, last Wednesday evening, he was invited by the girl “to her aunt’s home”, on Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt. Ally related that the girl “did not know how to give directions to the house”, and so decided to hand over her phone to her supposed neighbour to do so. The man said that he was directed to the “head of Caneview Avenue,” where he saw a man signaling him. Ally said that the individual entered his vehicle and identified himself as “Lisa’s neighbour” and provided the location of the
girl’s house within the street. Arriving at “Lisa’s” home around 20:30 hours, the neighbour instructed Ally to park in the yard, as many “thief-men like to steal vehicle parts in the area.” Complying, Ally parked his vehicle in the yard and locked it before he exited to wait on “Lisa”. Ally said that the “neighbour” then walked to the back door of the house, and began knocking, while calling for “Lisa”. However, there was no answer. The accountant, who said he then became suspicious, decided to call the “neighbour” to his vehicle, to inquire from him, about the girl’s whereabouts. Ally said that the man replied, “I’m coming, hold on.” After a few minutes had

She added that early yesterday, her son called and informed her that his son was still missing. “He said that Bisham (junior) missing and they looking for him and he told me that his face swell up. He could have hardly talked because he was crying,” the elderly woman recounted. Baboolall said that she has no idea where her son and his family were heading when the accident occurred but revealed that they used that route often. The search is ongoing for the boy.

After explaining that the motion sought to leave no room for legal intervention, he stated “We have learnt from our experiences...We know that the Judiciary seems to be entertaining any frivolous matter.” Since the Opposition parties have joined forces, a no-confidence vote against the PPP Government would be inevitable since they hold the majority of seats in the National Assembly. The Government will either opt for snap elections or the noconfidence motion will go to Parliament for it to be debated and then voted upon.
elapsed, Ally alleged that “Lisa’s neighbour” approached him silently from behind, and dealt him blows to his head and face, which left him unconscious. He said when he regained consciousness about one hour after the attack, he was still in the yard, but his vehicle (PRR 959) was gone. The accountant said that he was left in a state of “shock and embarrassment, and did not know what to do.” He said that he started to knock on the door and call for “Lisa” but there was no answer. He added that he did not want to talk to any neighbours concerning the matter, as he was emotionally distressed and embarrassed. Ally, who said he was in
serious pain, decided to sleep on the patio of the house until the next (Thursday) morning, when he decided to make his way to the Ruimveldt Police
Station with a taxi. After making his report, the accountant said that he was taken to the hospital by police ranks. Ally insisted that he can recall the location of the house, and is keen on carrying out a thorough investigation with the help of law enforcement officers. He said that police officers informed him that his vehicle was found yesterday afternoon in Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, with all four of its rims missing. Meanwhile, efforts to track the mysterious “Lisa” proved futile as the individual deleted the Facebook account and is no longer using the number that Ally was using to contact her.
A 27-year-old labourer reportedly caught stealing a contractor’s electrical saw, was granted $100,000 bail after being charged for Simple Larceny when he appeared in court yesterday. Lionel De Haley, 27, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to a Simple Larceny charge before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. De Haley is accused of stealing Mohan Surujpaul’s $60,000 electrical saw on August 16, last, at Diamond Housing Scheme. Police Prosecutor,
Corporal Seon Blackman, explained that Surujpaul is a contractor who is working on repairs at the Diamond Primary School. He said that last Saturday (August 16), the defendant visited the construction site and asked for water to drink. He said while there, De Haley took the electrical saw, but someone noticed him and raised an alarm. He was arrested and charged. His lawyer, Paul Fung-aFat, applied for reasonable bail. He revealed that his client had been charged with assault before, but it was dismissed. Fung-a-Fat claimed that
De Haley, a father of two, saw a “junkie” steal the electric saw and that his client was the one who led them to the place where the “junkie” placed it. He told the court that the article has since been recovered. However, the Prosecutor objected to bail saying that the accused was positively identified and he may pose a flight-risk. The Corporal also cited the nature and gravity of the offence. Despite the objections raised, De Haley was granted bail and he is set to make his next court appearance on October 21 at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.

Labour Market Survey conducted... From page 13 doing regular labour market surveys which could provide additional information in terms of indicators, the composition of the employment in the various sectors, age range, and other requisite data. This, he explained, is limited by Guyana’s extensive geography. But based on recommendations, the Ministry is prepared to embrace regular surveys, most of which are likely to be focused on the coastland, a process that will be conducted in conjunction with the National Bureau of Statistics. Another area that intelligence can be
accessed regularly, Henry informed, is at the level of the National Insurance Scheme, which can provide information on contributors and the list of registered employers in the Scheme. “We ourselves, in the Ministry of Labour, can provide some information on labour market intelligence in the sense that if we have our labour exchange really working in the kind of way that it should, you would know the amount of people who are registering for employment and the employers who are soliciting information from the labour exchange on vacancies they would have,” Henry said ahead of detailing the specifics of the findings.
GCAA highlights challenges posed... From page 20 Denbow noted firstly that to the best of his recollection, the last factory-fresh aircraft that would have reached Guyana’s shores for local operation would have been in the 1970s, when the government and people of Canada delivered a new twin Otter to the people of Guyana. On the other hand, domestic operations have had challenges with plane quality. “From time immemorial, the local aviation sector has seen importation of used or second hand, sometimes third and fourth hand aircraft to serve the domestic sector. Some of these aircraft have outlived their economic life and demand extensive and continuous maintenance.” Denbow continued that another one of his main concerns in the local section is the availability of qualified and experienced personnel. He opined that since the departure
of British Airways from Guyana in the mid1970s, there has been a decrease of qualified and experienced personnel in the aviation sector. He thus proposed to aviation operators; no compromise for qualified and experienced staff. He added that in relation to local authorities, there are those dedicated to the development of the sector, “but we also need to rid ourselves of those persons who feel they can walk off the job with impunity, who feel they can leave the tower unmanned.” The government has prided itself on the growth of the local aviation sector, depending on this avenue to sell Guyana as the new nature/eco tourist destination. Within the last few years, several companies, airlines have been welcomed into the Guyanese market with many of them eventually pulling out.

Gaza truce collapses, fighting erupts, Israel orders negotiators home GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip collapsed yesterday, with Palestinian militants firing dozens of rockets at Israel and Israel launching air strikes that health officials said killed three people including a woman and a young girl in Gaza. Accusing Gaza Islamists of breaking the truce, Israel promptly recalled its negotiators from talks in Cairo, leaving the fate of Egyptian-brokered efforts to secure a lasting peace hanging in the balance. Rockets were fired from Gaza nearly eight hours before a ceasefire - extended by a day on Monday - was due to expire. Later dozens of rockets took aim at a number of cities and one missile hit open land in the greater Tel Aviv area, causing some damage but no casualties. Gaza witnesses said Israeli aircraft launched 35 attacks, including one on a house in
Gaza City, where hospital officials said a woman and a two-year-old girl were killed. A third unidentified person also died in the strike, officials said. Israeli media said Israel had targeted a senior Hamas figure at the house that was bombed, possibly the head of a rocket launching operation. The army declined to comment on the bombing of that particular home in Gaza City, saying only that it had bombed 30 sites across Gaza today. Gaza’s dominant Islamist group Hamas said it fired at least 40 rockets at Israel after that deadly hit, targeting Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv area including Israel’s BenGurion International Airport. An Israeli security official said there was no disruption of activity at the airport. Hamas’s armed wing issued a statement after the rocket barrage accusing Israel of “violating the calm and
committing a massacre ... the enemy has opened the gateway to hell.” It vowed Israel would “pay a heavy price” for its air strikes. Earlier Hamas had denied any involvement in rocket fire when three rockets struck in the Beersheba region in southern Israel, which Israel denounced as a violation of a truce eight hours before it expired at 1700 ET or midnight local time. Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, called that initial attack “a grave and direct violation of the ceasefire” and a military spokesman said that in response to the salvoes, “terror targets across the Gaza Strip” were attacked. On Netanyahu’s order, Israeli delegates to the indirect talks in Cairo on ending the Gaza war and c h a r t i n g t h e t e r r i t o r y ’s future, immediately flew home. homes have been destroyed. Suggesting that Israel expected more violence, the military instructed Israeli civilians to open bomb shelters as far as 80 km (50 miles) from Gaza, or beyond the Tel Aviv area.
Israel’s Channel 10 TV said those instructions may have been issued in anticipation of the retaliation that might follow were Israel to target a senior Hamas official. The station did not identify the official.

US judge orders Google…
…Boost for Integrity body Section 34 probe P O R T- O F - S PA I N , Trinidad - CMC – A United States court has granted a subpoena to the Integrity Commission here allowing it to request information from the internet search engine, Google, as part of its investigation into the alleged “Emailgate” scandal here. Justice William H Orrick of the Northern District of California Court on August 14 granted the application for subpoena seeking information for the email accounts “anand@gmail.com,” “anand@tstt.net.tt,” and “kamlapb1@gmail.com,” “which the Commission said was relevant to a criminal investigation into possible governmental corruption. Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley on May 20, 2013 told Parliament he had received 31 emails purporting to show correspondence between Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, Local Government and Works Minister Suruj Rambachan
and then security adviser Gary Griffith, in a sinister move to undermine the judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the media. Rowley said the emails, dating back to September 2012, were from people concerned with the government’s defence of the early proclamation of Section 34 of the Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) Act that had the effect of allowing people, whose trial has not started after a 10-year period to walk free and a verdict of not guilty entered against their Critics say that the clause was aimed at supporting businessmen Ish Galbaransingh and Steve Ferguson, who have been described as financiers of the ruling United National Congress (UNC), the biggest partner in the four-member coalition People’s Partnership government. The two are facing fraud and laundering charges relating to the re-
Justice William H Orrick development of the Piarco International Airport in 2001. They are also wanted in the United States on a number of related charges. The government officials have all denied the accusations and Prime Minister Persad Bissessar and Ramlogan have filed preaction protocol letters alleging that Rowley on May 23, 2013, at a public meeting continued to use the e-mails as the basis for his assertion.

Health Minister to go after tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship Jamaica Gleaner - Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson is sending a warning that he will be going after the advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco. Ferguson made the declaration yesterday morning during a stakeholder consultation at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston. The meeting is part of this week’s Needs Assessment exercise being undertaken jointly with officials of the Convention Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. And tackling the advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco
among the major areas of focus for implementation as part of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The Health Minister says the banning of direct and indirect sponsorship, advertising and promotion is of great concern especially given the increase in the prevalence of young people initiating smoking at a very early age. Ferguson reported that Jamaica is also moving to put in place comprehensive Tobacco Control Legislation and a National Coordinating Mechanism to move the process of compliance forward in a systematic way.

PM: No Indian takeover Trinidad Express - The controversial run-off provision of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2014 will not allow Indians to take over the country, says Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar. Speaking at the United National Congress (UNC) Monday night forum at the Gasparillo Secondary Schoolt, Persad-Bissessar said the run-off mechanism would not divide the country into a system of tribal voting but instead will unite the people. Persad-Bissessar pointed out that this country’s population comprises of 35.4 per cent East Indian, 34.2 per cent Africans, 22.8 per cent Mixed, 6.2 per cent Undeclared and 1.4 per cent are the others (Chinese, White, Syrian, Lebanese etc). “Since more than 51 per cent of votes is required to elect a majority, an MP would require more than the ethnic vote to win the seat,” said Persad-Bissessar. She said: “If every single Indian voted for the UNC or the Partnership they could never get the majority required.”
Kamla Persad-Bissessar She said no one ethnic group on its own can win the required more than 50 per cent of the vote. “They would have to unite with other groups. That is what the run-off really signifies. Majority rule with a mandate of unification instead of division,” said PersadBissessar. She said Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley’s lack of support and fear of a runoff suggests that he believes he cannot unite people nor can he win the majority of the votes of the people. Persad-Bissessar said some of the fears expressed about the run-off system suggest that another election would be undemocratic and
would impose a restriction on the freedom of choice of the voter. She said the individual’s right of choice to vote for a party or candidate of their choice is not restricted in any form or fashion and will remain unfettered. Instead, she said, the right of choice of the individual is in fact broadened by permitting the voter a second opportunity to vote in any instance where the electorate is unable to decide on a majority winner in any constituency. Persad-Bissessar said voters would have the opportunity to vote expanded, and not restricted, as they will have the chance to vote for a second time and may wish to change their minds or keep their original choice. She said persons who did not vote on election day might decide to vote when the run-off election is held and who knows how that person would vote. The Bill, which was passed in the House of Representatives on August 12 is scheduled to be debated in the Senate on August 26.
JLP rejects JUTC fare increase KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition Spokesman on Transport Dr Horace Chang has hit out against any plans by Government to increase public transport fares at this time. Dr Chang was responding to media reports that the Minister of Transportation Omar Davies is set to announce Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) fare increases today, August 20. “Any increase at this time would be unconscionable and wicked,” said Dr Chang.
“We will not support any such increase and reject it as an attack on the working people of Jamaica, especially single mothers who have been struggling with daily increases in the cost of living for too long now,” the Jamaica Labour Party general secretary said. He added that the situation was even more dire as “school fees are increasing and the government is doing nothing to ensure growth
that can provide quality jobs for our people and allow them to look after their families.” “Schools open in two weeks. This increase is another painful assault on the already empty pockets of the average Jamaican. The government clearly has no conscience,” said Dr Chang. The Opposition Spokesman said that when government announced the last increase in 2013: “We requested a full audit of the JUTC, but this hasn’t been done.

Barbados introduces new initiatives to Liberia fights Ebola in capital, deal with upsurge in gun-related crimes West Africa toll tops 1,200 BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - CMC – Barbados, faced with an upsurge in gun related crimes, has stepped up surveillance and vigilance at ports of entry, Home Affairs Minister Adriel Brathwaite has said. He said the new initiative is based on intelligence and that he has already convened a meeting with Acting Commissioner of Police, Tyrone Griffith, and Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Seymour Cumberbatch, on the issue. “One of the things we are going to do is get (officials from the) Customs Department to come and sit down with us because guns are coming in through our
ports of entry. We have to be more vigilant, even at the Post Office,” he said. Brathwaite said the vigilance would also extend to those engaged in the fishing industry. “We have to do more random checks, even with our own fishermen when they go out on to the waters. It cannot be business as usual. “I am saying that with traffic (coming) into the country by boat, by air, by cargo, we are going to have to pay more attention to it,” he said. A government statement announcing the new crime initiative gave no details as to the number of gun-related crimes in Barbados.

Funeral planned for Missouri teen shot by police as clashes persist (Reuters) - Funeral services are planned on Monday for an unarmed black teenager whose fatal shooting by a white policeman in Missouri has ignited more than a week of racially charged clashes in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. The violence has captured international headlines, raising questions about the state of U.S. race relations nearly six years after Americans elected their first black president. As lawyers for the family of Michael Brown, 18, announced plans yesterday for his funeral, U.S. lawmakers called for calm and a change in police tactics that have so far failed to soothe angry demonstrators. Police said they came under gunfire again overnight and made dozens of arrests despite the deployment of Missouri National Guard troops and the lifting of a curfew to allow protesters more freedom to demonstrate. There were at least 57 arrests on Monday night and into yesterday, most on a charge of failure to disperse, according to the St. Louis County Justice Services Centre. It said 15 of those arrested were from outside Missouri. “The people who are rioting and looting are not the people who live in this area. They come down here and they wait for the action to start,” said Arlando Travis, 38, owner of a local landscaping business. “We overpoliced for a few days, and then we completely underpoliced,” U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, a Missouri
Democrat who was travelling to Ferguson yesterday, told cable channel MSNBC. She said she was working with local leaders on new methods, such as screening for weapons and moving protest areas away from the business district to open green spaces. President Barack Obama said on Monday he told Missouri Governor Jay Nixon that use of the National Guard should be limited, and he also called for conciliation. Attorney General Eric Holder plans to visit Ferguson today. Ferguson, a mostly black community of about 21,000 residents just outside St. Louis, has a history of racial tension. Blacks have long complained of police harassment and underrepresentation in city leadership. In a separate incident just miles (km) from the protests, a 23-year-old black man holding a knife was fatally shot by police yesterday, police told a news conference.
They said two officers opened fire after the man ignored repeated calls to drop his weapon. Public reaction to the police response in Ferguson was mixed nationally, showing divisions along colour and political lines, according to a Reuters/IPSOS poll released yesterday. “There’s certainly not universal support on this particular issue – there’s a lot of divisiveness,” said IPSOS pollster Julia Clark. The online poll of 976 U.S. adults conducted from Friday to Monday showed a clear majority agreed the racial makeup of a police force should reflect the local community, and 78 percent said citizens should be able to record police making arrests and carrying out other duties. Tension boiled over 10 days ago after Brown was shot and killed while walking with a friend down a residential street on the afternoon of Aug. 9.
(Reuters) - Liberia battled yesterday to halt the spread of the Ebola disease in its crowded, run-down oceanside capital Monrovia, recording the most new deaths as fatalities from the world’s worst outbreak of the deadly virus rose above 1,200. The epidemic of the hemorrhagic disease, which can kill up to 90 percent of those it infects, is ravaging the three small West African states of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and also has a toehold in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy. As the Geneva-based World Health Organization rushed to ramp up the global response to the outbreak, including emergency food deliveries to quarantined zones, it announced that deaths had risen to 1,229 as of Aug. 16, out of 2,240 cases. Between Aug. 14 and 16, Liberia recorded the most new deaths, 53, followed by Sierra Leone with 17 and Guinea with 14. On a more hopeful note, the WHO expressed “cautious optimism” that the
spread of the outbreak in Nigeria could be stopped. Four deaths were recorded in Africa’s most populous nation out of 12 confirmed cases between July and Aug. 16. It also described the situation in Guinea, where the virus made its first appearance in West Africa in December, as currently “less alarming” than in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The virus was transferred to Nigeria by a U.S. citizen, Patrick Sawyer, who arrived by plane from Liberia. Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu reported late yesterday a fifth Ebola death in that country. The victim was a female consultant doctor who had treated Sawyer. WHO said the situation in Lagos looked “reassuring”. However, Cameroon closed its borders with Nigeria yesterday as a precaution. The WHO said it was working with the U.N.’s World Food Programme to ensure food delivery to one million people living in Ebola quarantine zones cordoned
off by local security forces in a border zone of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. “Providing regular food supplies is a potent means of limiting unnecessary movement,” it said in a statement. Besides infection in border zones, Liberia is fighting to stop the spread of the virus in the poorest neighbourhoods of its capital, such as the West Point slum where at the weekend a rockthrowing crowd attacked and looted a temporary holding centre for suspected Ebola cases, 17 of whom fled. The government imposed a nationwide curfew between 9 p.m. (5 p.m. EDT) and 6 a.m. in an effort to curb the disease, which is spread by contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons, it said in a statement on state radio. “The communities of West Point in Monrovia and Dolo Town in Margibi are quarantined under full security watch. This means that there will be no movements in and out of those areas,” the statement said.

ESPNcricinfo - Ottis Gibson has officially ended his tenure as West Indies coach with immediate effect. The WICB released a statement on Tuesday night that confirmed the board and Gibson had “mutually agreed to terminate their association”, ending the speculation that began after Gibson was absent from team training in Grenada on Monday ahead of the first ODI against Bangladesh. Richie Richardson, the team manager, will take charge of the side on an interim basis for the series against Bangladesh. The rest of the coaching staff, including assistant coaches Stuart Williams and Andre Coley, and bowling consultant Curtly Ambrose, will remain in their positions. “On behalf of the board and West Indies cricket as a whole we express our gratitude to Ottis for his work, particularly in coaching the team to winning the ICC World Twenty20 in 2012, and offer our best wishes to him

Last month, he joined Barcelona for a reported fee of £75m but the Catalan club’s vice president Jordi Mestre said on Tuesday the actual amount was significantly less. “Negotiations started before the World Cup and we worked hard to come to a final figure of £65m. We were originally quoted over •90m (£72m). “He had much better offers than ours financially but he wanted to come to Barcelona. He made a great effort - financially and personally - to be here.” Suarez admitted he feared for his career after the incident with Chiellini in Uruguay’s 1-0 win in Natal on 24 June. “Of course I was concerned - not just about the transfer to Barcelona but more for me as a person. But, as I’ve said, that’s in the past now and I’m trying to concentrate on Barcelona,” he said. “Everything that happens in the past, that needs to be forgotten. If I start thinking about everything I’ve gone through, I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”

The board’s statement also noted Gibson’s “unwavering commitment and professionalism” during his tenure, which began in early 2010 when he left his job as England’s bowling coach to take charge of West Indies. During his time as head coach, West Indies won nine of 36 Tests and won four Test series - two against Bangladesh and one against Zimabwe. However, they lost backto-back series to New Zealand both away and at home over the past nine months. They currently sit eighth on the ICC Test rankings, ahead of only Zimbabwe and Bangladesh; eighth on the ODI rankings; and seventh on the T20 rankings. Their most notable achievement during Gibson’s tenure was winning the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh returns to favorite destination for ODI opener today West Indies hit by ‘Coach-dispute’ By Sean Devers Since 1973, the West Indies have played 713 ODIs, winning 365, losing 316 with eight Ties and 24 no-results and the home team, reportedly plagued by an internal rift between the players and Coach Ottis Gibson, will be keen to improve that record against a Bangladesh side which has lost their last five ODIs as the 3-match ODI series begins today from 09:30hrs in Grenada. The WICB has reportedly removed Gibson as Head Coach ahead of today’s ODI and usually reliable sources close to the Board confirmed Gibson was not in Grenada, adding that there seems to be a fall out with Gibson and
some of the players who are reportedly uncomfortable with him. The source added that assistant Coach David Williams, the former West Indies Test keeper is working with the team ahead of today’s game and revealed that a teleconference should take place soon with the WICB Directors to deal with the issue and could include an Attorney. There are stories on the internet which claim that 46 year-old South African Mickey Arthur, the former South Africa Coach, who became the first foreign-born coach of Australia, has been given Gibson’s job after coaching the Jamaica Tallawahs in the recent CPL
T20 tournament. The source said they were not aware of this. Meanwhile, when asked if there was any truth in the internet reports, WICB President David Cameron confirmed there was an ‘issue’ with Gibson but added “Don’t believe what you read on the Internet”. The WICB’s head declined to comment further on the matter. It is against this unstable background that the teams meet today at the National Stadium on the Spice Isle of Grenada. West Indies and Bangladesh met for the first time in the 1999 World Cup when West Indies won by seven wickets and since then Bangladesh have only beaten the Carribean side seven times in a bilateral ODI series since their first win in
Only nine players reportedly turned up for national football training on Saturday Reports are surfacing that on Saturday August 16, the first day of preparation for the 2014 Caribbean Cup qualifiers, only nine players were present for National Team training out of a list of 30 that was circulated by the Guyana Football Federation. The nine players, which included two goal-keepers, were then told that training was to be cancelled as a result, a severely embarrassing event that suggests a lack of organisation from the GFF, as no official notice for players to attend training was made. The National Team, which is now being coached by former player Denzil Thompson, only has one overseas-based player and the proposed training on Saturday did not even account for any players from leading club side Alpha United.
It would appear from recent comments made by GFF President Christopher Matthias on NCN television that his vision of development does not include the use of overseas-based players, despite the Golden Jaguars reaching their highest ever point in World Cup Qualifying by using a team which combined both domestic-based and overseas players. Many countries in the Caribbean, including Caribbean Cup opponents St Kitts & Nevis, are calling on their best players regardless of where they are based in the world. It seems likely at this point in time that the Golden Jaguars squad for the Caribbean Cup will consist exclusively of young, domestic-based players. Guyana has three, professional, experienced
‘Golden Jaguars’ in the form of JP Rodrigues, Christopher Nurse and Carl Cort, who all currently play in the USA. It is unclear if any of these players has been formally contacted by the GFF at all this year. Professional football clubs expect Federations to give them acceptable notice in advance of dates in which International players will leave and return. It is also unclear if young Guyanese star Trayon Bobb, now playing in Europe, has been contacted formally by the GFF at all this year either. It is a sad state of affairs that within the space of two years, Guyana has gone from a team playing Mexico in front of crowds numbering nearly 100,000, to that of a team unable to gather eleven players for training. With the Caribbean Cup two weeks away, the situation is dire.
Luis Suarez: Barcelona striker says he won’t bite in future BBC Sport - Barcelona striker Luis Suarez says he has talked to specialists about his behaviour and insists there will be no further biting incidents. Suarez is serving a fourmonth ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup - his third biting offence. “I say to fans, don’t worry, because I won’t do that anymore,” he promised. “I spoke to my psychologist and he said I had to face it and say sorry. I did - now I would rather focus on the present, which is
Barcelona.” The 27-year-old Uruguay striker, who said he was “really depressed” after the incident in Brazil, launched an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the ban. Following the verdict, the former Liverpool striker is still banned from playing in competitive fixtures until late October and must also serve the remaining eight games of his nine-match international ban. But Suarez is no longer excluded from “all footballrelated activities”, which
allowed him to make his Barcelona debut as a 75thminute substitute in the 6-0 friendly victory over Mexican side Club Leon on Monday. Addressing a media conference on Tuesday, he said of his behavioural issues: “I am speaking to professionals - the right professionals. But it is a private matter and I don’t want to comment further on that.” Suarez spent three years with Liverpool, during which he was banned for eight (Continued on page 29)
Dominica by 52 runs in 2009. This was the first International match staged at Windsor Park stadium and although Kemar Roach bagged five wickets, West Indies were never in contention. Mohammad Ashraful returned to the form that had eluded him in the Tests, Shakib Al Hasan retained his, and Mahmudullah hit the only two sixes in a challenging total. In response West Indies were again undone by Bangladesh’s four spinners. Handed the new ball, slow left-armer Abdur Razzak, who had joined the tourists for the one-day format, finished with 4-39. Only Devon Smith, recalled after his omission from the Tests, and David Bernard batted with any confidence as Bangladesh won their first ODIs on West Indian soil. But all of the wins have come in the last four years and today they return to their favorite cricketing destination with victory margin of seven wins and 15 defeats in 19 ODIs against the West Indies. Five years ago the home team were beaten in all three ODIs and the two Tests as Bangladesh made a clean sweep of the matches against a hastily assembled West Indies 3rd string team due to a players’ strike. Bangladesh had earlier won the two-Test series with a 95-run win in St
Vincent and a four-wicket win in Grenada. This was after their inaugural tour of the Carribean in 2014 ended in 3nil whitewash for the tourists in the ODI series. After being beaten 2-1 at home in 2011, Bangladesh won their first ODI game and series at home when they won the last 5-match ODI series between the sides, 3-2 in 2012. They return to the Carribean with their confidence high as the series promises keenly contested cricket with both teams having a lot to prove. The home side’s last assignment had them losing the threematch Test series against New Zealand and drawing the T20s. They haven’t won any series or tournament this year apart from a three-match T20 series against England and a one-off ODI against Ireland. Under Dwayne Bravo, West Indies have now won three out of seven ODIs this year, and 11 out of 25 ODIs since r e p l a c i n g D a r r e n Sammy as Captain. But apart from Bravo, who has been the team’s leading all-rounder this year and Lendl Simmons, none of the other batsmen have even crossed 200 runs this year, while left-arm spinner Nikita Miller is the only bowler with 10 wickets.
The West Indies players have had some preparation for limited overs cricket playing in the CPL which concluded last Saturday and Simmons was the tournament’s top-scorer, with Chris Gayle in third position. Ravi Rampul was the leading wicket-taker and Sunil Narine the only other bowler in the ODI squad among the top ten. Bangladesh have only drawn one Test against Sri Lanka and won two T20s, against Nepal and Afghanistan. They have a losing streak to break in oneday cricket, their favourite format, and several players including Tamim Iqbal are out of form. The absence of Shakib Al Hasan due to a six-month suspension is also a worry although in their last series they beat West Indies without Shakib due to injury. West Indies (probable): Dwayne Bravo (capt), Chris Gayle, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Denish Ramdin (wk), Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy, Sunil Narine, Jason Holder, Kemar Roach Bangladesh (probable): Mushfiqur Rahim (Capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Taskin Ahmed, AlAmin Hossain

The Warriors who were prepared and ready for battle declared war from the first tip off as they raced away to a 19-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. The New Amsterdam Warriors continued their jolly run in the second segment pouring in another 19 points to take the half time break at 38-14. The pattern was much the same in the third quarter which ended with a 55-24 lead for the rampaging Warriors. The Hardliners somehow made things hard for themselves as they never got going until the last quarter when they scored 24 points to double their score to end the game at 82-48. Warriors were led by a

Ravi Shastri ‘in charge’ for one-day series Boyce & Jefford, patrons make BBC Sport - Former India captain Ravi Shastri will oversee the team for the five-match one-day international series with England, which starts on Monday. The Indian Cricket Board said the 52-year-old would be in overall charge of cricket but that Duncan Fletcher would continue in his role as head coach. Bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding coach Trevor Penney have been “given a break” for the series. Former India players Sanjay Bangar and Bharat Arun join the support staff. The appointment of Shastri as team director for the series follows a disastrous run of three successive heavy defeats in the Test series, which England won 3-1. After a drawn opening match, India won the second Test at Lord’s by 95 runs but then lost at Southampton by 266 runs, at Old Trafford by an innings and 54 runs and at The Oval by an innings and 244 runs - the latter two matches in only three days. The 2011 World Cup winners have won only one

Shastri, an obdurate opening or middle order batsman and slow left-arm bowler, who played 80 Test matches and 150 one-day internationals for India from 1981-1992, briefly coached the team on a tour of Bangladesh in 2007 but has been better known as a commentator since his retirement. A BCCI statement explaining his appointment said: “In culmination of the discussions among all the office-bearers of the BCCI
over the last couple of weeks, the BCCI has decided to avail the services of former India captain, Mr Ravi Shastri, to oversee and guide the Indian cricket team for the forthcoming one-day international matches against England. “Mr Duncan Fletcher will continue as head coach while Ravi Shastri will be the overall in-charge of cricket affairs of the Indian Team.” The ODI series with England begins at Bristol and has matches at Cardiff, Trent Bridge, Edgbaston and Headingley, before India’s tour concludes with a Twenty20 international at Edgbaston on 7 September.
Armstrong living positive life but problems not over LONDON (Reuters) Lance Armstrong is living an unbothered and positive life 18 months after confessing to using performanceenhancing drugs, the disgraced cyclist told CNN. A cancer survivor and hero to millions, Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France victories and banned for life from racing in 2012 by the U.S. AntiDoping Agency after it accused him in a report of engineering one of the most sophisticated doping schemes in sports. The investigation and later admission to doping destroyed Armstrong’s reputation and career but the 42-year-old American says he has been able to go about his daily life without being taunted or heckled for what he did. “I never get crap, not once, and I’m surprised by that,” Armstrong told CNN (edition.cnn.com/SPORT/.c om) on Tuesday. “Sure, I sometimes get the vibe that someone wants to say something but it’s never happened.” While day-to-day life is good for Armstrong, the
Lance Armstrong
cyclist’s problems are far from over as he and his team of lawyers prepare to face several civil lawsuits that could drain the fortune he accumulated as one of the world’s most popular and successful athletes. In June a federal judge rejected Armstrong’s bid to dismiss a whistleblower lawsuit claiming that he and his former cycling team, which the U.S. Postal Service had sponsored, defrauded the government in a scheme to use banned, performance-enhancing drugs. A still defiant Armstrong, however, claims
the U.S. Postal Service benefited hugely from the exposure it got from its sponsorship and that the lawsuit had been brought too late. “I’m very confident that that’s a winner for us,” said Armstrong. “I don’t think anyone can truly argue the U.S. Postal Service was damaged. “They made a lot of money in the deal and got what they bargained for. “I worked my ass off for them and I’m proud of it. Furthermore there wasn’t a technical relationship between myself and the U.S. Postal Service.”
The Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Committee on Sunday made a financial donation to Cassey George following the conclusion of the Fifth Edition of their Track and Field Classic, which was held at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
The Organisers of the athletics meet started an impromptu fund for the athlete by making the first contribution and lobbied patrons at the event to continue to contribute. At the end of the event all proceeds raised where handed over to George.
George is a multiple CARIFTA Games champion and medallist and perhaps the most decorated Guyanese middle distance runner at the moment. It has become a tradition of the Boyce & Jefford Classic to give back to an area of choice following the meet.

41st Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway
Championships lost but honours gained as local chess players return home By Michael Benjamin They have had a poor start in their quest to procure honours at the 41st Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway after losing to Albania on the inaugural day of the championships. Efforts to improve their fortunes on day two failed to produce better results and the Guyanese players went down by a similar margin to Kyrgyzstan. Notwithstanding, the local chess team comprising Haifeng Su, Anthony Drayton, Ronuel Greenidge and Maria Gonsalves, regrouped and at the end of the tournament, which attracted 183 countries, had amassed 19 ½ points from a possible 44 to finish the tournament placed at 160. The team has since returned home and might not have won the overall championships but was able to salvage some pride after procuring several individual commendations. Former National Junior Champion, Drayton defeated International Master, Bunmi Olape of Nigeria and Candidate Master, Charles Eichab of Nambia, and was duly promoted to a similar rank after enjoying a rating increase from 1828 to 1914.4. Greenidge was also in the money and has also clinched a similar ranking as Drayton. He started out at a rating of 162.3 and at the end of the tournament had enjoyed an increased rating of 122.4; he played a total of 11 games, won 6 and lost 5. Those
ratings will be officially conferred on the players at a later date. Yolander Persaud travelled as a chess ambassador and during the tournament, participated in a FIDE 3 days training seminar conducted by FIDE Instructor and Grandmaster, Efstratias Grivas of Greece. She was successful and is now qualified to conduct introductory courses in the sport while Meusa, whose participation in the course was compromised due to a slight administrative blunder, has earned a National Instructor title which qualifies him to coach players at the FIDE level. Meanwhile, National Junior Champion, Haifeng Su and his predecessor, Anthony Drayton both admitted that the tournament was a tough one and tested them to the hilt. Notwithstanding, both players felt that they had benefitted immensely from the experience and are better prepared for similar championships in the future. Said Drayton, “We learnt quite a lot; things that we never believed mattered like sleeping management, eating habits and our mode of thinking but most importantly, we learned that the attainment of a high level of self-confidence was extremely important at championships of this nature.” Haifeng Su concurred while adding that he was exposed to different modes of preparation and is certain that the new approaches will be
The players enjoy a photo op shortly after their return to Guyana. beneficial to him as he progresses in the sport. “The tournament attracted over 200 grandmasters and former world champions and playing among such quality players left us in awe,” said Haifeng. The team suffered setbacks early after former Junior and Senior Champion, Taffin Khan, was
forced off the team when he was refused a visa to Norway after he was mistakenly fingered as a terrorist, this because of him having a similar name and birth date of someone on the list of terrorists in Norway. The team also had to endure five days of inconvenience after their luggage was misplaced.
Gonsalves said that being the only female on the team, she was most affected. Further, a technicality where she played on board four and was not allowed to change her position meant that the opposition players enjoyed the advantage of pitting their strongest players against her. Nevertheless, Gonsalves feels
that the experience of playing at that level was immeasurable. The team will resume training and competition soon and all have their eyes on the 42nd Chess Olympiad scheduled for Baku Azerbaijan in August 2016. They are all adamant that the experience in Norway will stand them in good stead.

Portland Timbers too good for Towering Quincy ‘Biggie’ Small is the Alpha United on CCL debut latest addition to local amateur boxing
Steve Zakuani (on ball) scorer of Portland ’s opening goal in the 18th controls play for his side. It was double history for US Major League Soccer side Portland Timber who defeated home team Alpha United 4-1 on the CONCACAF Champions League debut at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence last evening. Embarking on the longest trip in CONCACAF Champions League history for a single game (2500 miles from Portland to Boston and another 2500 miles from Boston to the north coast of South America), Portland did not show any signs of a tough journey as they journeyed to a comfortable and compact win over the Guyana champions. Two goals either side of play earned Portland Timbers, currently in sixth place in the Western Conference with a 710-7 record and 31 points, chasing one of five conference playoff berths, full points against Alpha which suffered their second loss in as many matches at home, having also lost to Olimpia of Honduras. Steve Zakuani of Zimbabwe and one of six players who have CCL experience, scored his first goal in Portland uniform when he slotted home the opener in the 18th minute of play, beating Ronson Williams in goal for Alpha. Such was the confidence of Portland on debut that they started the game playing a very high defence but that changed as the game progressed and Alpha eased into some form going forward. Ronson Williams in goal for Alpha was called into early duty (4th minute) having to tip the ball over the bar from a well taken corner by Michael Nanchoff. In the 13th minute good work by midfielders Gregory Richardson and Aldair Paredes and forward Kithson Bain almost saw Alpha taking the lead but Paredes’ shot sailed over the cross bar. They (Portland) almost doubled the lead three minutes after going ahead as they
continued to look a well oiled unit; Alpha did their best to keep up with the pace of a side that rested 10 of its main players. The starting X1 for the visitors brought to the pitch a combined match experience of 116 games in the MLS this season and that was the level Alpha were up against. Portland doubled the lead in the 34th minute, Argentine Maximiliano Urruti easing into the box and with only Williams to beat, drilled a powerful right foot shot to the keepers right. But just on the brink of half time, Alpha managed to ease their way back into contention with a well executed free kick from about 35 yards out; taken by defender Barbosa Murilo after Gregory Richardson drew the foul. Murilo’s shot dipped just under the cross bar to elude goalkeeper Andrew Weber. It was the perfect way to end the half for the home team which showed some zest at the start of the second half, even forcing an early corner. Fresh legs were introduced by both sides, the Guyanese side made their first substitution in the 51st minute
when Kester Jacobs was introduced for Manuel Vargas. Four minutes later, Portland made their first sub, goal scorer Urruti was replaced by Fanendo Adi of Nigeria. One minute later Alpha made their second sub, forward Kithson Bain made way for Manasseh Primo. With fresh legs introduced, it was Portland that maintained their dominance and looked threatening with every attack as Alpha were placed on the defensive. Portland underlined their dominance 66 minutes on when substitute Adi guided the ball past Williams for their third goal, the end result of another excellent build up and clinical finishing. From this juncture it was going to be an uphill task for Alpha as the visitors looked more and more menacing when going forward. The fourth and final goal, was scored in the 83rd minute, Rodney Wallace of Costa Rica squaring the ball into the box, Williams at full stretch missed the ball which went into the path of Alvas Powell of Jamaica who patted home calmly.
