White-collar crime holding back T&T, says AmCham CEO Trinidad Express Inadequate governance and the “impunity” of white collar-crime are severely hampering the country’s ability to be competitive. This was the view of recently appointed chief executive at the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham T&T) Nirad Tewarie as he spoke during AmCham T&T’s 18th Annual Health, Safety, Security and Environment Conference and Exhibition at the Hilton Trinidad Wednesday. Tewarie referred to an arrest early Saturday where police intercepted the driver of a sports utility vehicle in San Juan with US$500,000 after an alleged drug deal earlier.
“We do not believe that there is anything to celebrate when the only person who is arrested for allegedly transporting more than (TT) $3 million in drug money is a driver. The authorities must find out to whom the money really belonged,” Tewarie said. He said AmCham T&T was looking forward to the prosecution of people responsible for the misappropriation of Government funds. “Those who are responsible must be held accountable and consequences meted out. A lack of accountability in the society is contributing to inadequate governance. As it pertains to HSSE, if no one is
held accountable, the entire process is compromised. So to should it be across sectors and fields,” Tewarie said. For economic growth and development to take place in a sustained manner and, more importantly, for such growth to lead to greater social development, “our national institutions must be properly developed”, he noted. “As a responsible organisation, AmCham T&T has already made proposals to the Ministry of Finance to improve the efficiency of the tax system. We also had a seminar earlier in the year on white collar crime. As part of our strategic plan, we will increase our vociferousness on issues such as these,” Tewarie said.
Minister of Sport Anil Roberts has resigned
Trinidad Guardian Speaking at the post Cabinet media conference at 4.45 p.m. yesterday, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that she has accepted Roberts’ resignation, in the wake of several allegations of corruption arising from the Life Sport programme. Roberts remains Member of Parliament for D’Abadie/ O’Meara. No by-election can be held as the government is in its fifth year. Acting President Timothy Hamel-Smith to appoint Rupert Griffith as new minister of sport. Insisting that he has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the Life Sport audit, Roberts last week said he will not tender his resignation from the People’s Partnership Government. In May, a video went viral showing showing a person resembling a government minister rolling a substance
Anil Roberts believed to be marijuana into a cigarette in a hotel room with two women. Last month, Roberts told the PM he has never used drugs, including marijuana, during his tenure as minister and “never taken, used or experimented with illicit or illegal drugs or ever been involved in any form or fashion with prostitutes.”
Persad-Bissessar subsequently said she had no reason to remove Roberts from her Cabinet, since he had given her that explanation in a letter in relation to the controversial ganja video. Tuesday’s Guardian editorial called for Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar to fire Roberts: “Since Sport Minister Anil Roberts refuses to resign over the Life Sport controversy, it is now up to Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar to fire him from her Cabinet.” Roberts was first elected to the House of Representatives on Monday May 24, 2010. He was appointed Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs on May 29, 2010. Before he entered party politics, he was already well known as the swimming coach of Olympic Bronze Medal winner George Bovell III, and as the host of popular television sports show.
Jamaica health officials monitoring West Africa ebola virus outbreak KINGSTON, Jamaica CMC – Jamaica’s response to the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa was discussed at a meeting yesterday at the Ministry of Health. Health Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says the situation is being closely monitored based on Jamaica’s open borders and as a result steps will be taken to prevent a possible spread. Global medical charity, Doctors Without Borders, has warned that the Ebola
crisis is unprecedented and out of control. According to Ferguson, based on the warning, Jamaica’s preparedness must be addressed. More than 670 people have died of Ebola in the outbreak, the largest on
record since the disease was detected in the 1970s. The International Civil Aviation Organisation has met global health officials to discuss measures to stop the disease from crossing borders.

Senate approves controversial legislation with new amendments - Tax bill passed
Senator Mark Golding Jamaica Observer - The Senate Wednesday passed two controversial tax bills — the Tax Collections (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the Tax Penalties (Harmonisation) Act — after the Government fulfilled its promise to amend the controversial provisions. The bills were passed in the House of Representatives last week Wednesday, despite strong challenges from Opposition spokesman on finance and planning, Audley Shaw. His objections eventually
led to the Government announcing plans to bring significant changes to the provisions during the Senate debate. Senator Mark Golding, the minister of justice, who piloted the bills, introduced the amendments which also delayed the operational date of the bills to October, from August 1. The amendments reversed the initial decision to give the commissioner general of Ta x Administration Jamaica (TAJ) powers to require persons to pay over sums owed to a tax debtor in lieu of outstanding taxes. One of the amendments allows the commissioner general to recover these sums as a civil debt owed to the TAJ, through the courts. It also removed the provisions which would have empowered the commissioner general to place a lien on the property of tax debtors without a specific court order, through the issue of a certificate showing the amount owed. The new amendment states that the commissioner
general may make an application to the Supreme Court for an order to have registered, in the court, a certificate that has been issued by the TAJ. An application under this sub-section would have to be made in accordance with rules of court and will be heard by a single judge in chamber. In addition, the amendments reverse the earlier decision to allow the commissioner general to apply payments made by tax debtors firstly to interest, penalties and surcharge before applying any to the principal owed. The amendment passed yesterday states that payments should be applied, firstly, to any principal that is payable and next to any interest, penalty and surcharge in that order. The debate on the bills lasted more than three hours before being approved. Senator Nigel Clarke, the main speaker for the Opposition, said that he sympathised with those Jamaicans who felt threatened by the additional powers contemplated for the commissioner general under the provisions of the bills.
Bajans told to pay tax Barbados Nation - Pay the solid waste tax! The Government greatly needs the revenue. That is the advice from historian Dr Henderson Carter amidst the cry of thousands of Barbadians that the tax is unfair. “I believe that we should pay the solid waste tax and I believe that because the
Government wants revenue . . . I would rather pay that tax than to have our currency devalued and my money which is in the bank worth nothing . . . so I rather pay the $200 or the $300,” Carter told those in attendance during the National Library Service’s public lecture on Monday night. But at the same time,
Carter, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, frowned on the recent move by Massy Holdings. He said while the solid waste tax had caused much discussion, the rebranding of long-standing Barbadian business names by Massy Holdings was much more deserving of attention.

Kumar’s U-19 basketball team is not a National Team DEAR EDITOR, If the basketball component of the InterGuiana Games goes ahead as scheduled and is played from August 1-3, 2014 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, basketball fans in Guyana and our guests from Suriname and French Guiana, will have the opportunity to witness a basketball team of Kumar’s choosing, playing against National Under-19 teams from Suriname and French Guiana. Kumar has appointed himself the ‘Czar’ of youth basketball in Guyana wherein the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has no standing in
his obtuse wisdom. If Suriname or French Guiana win or lose to Kumar’s U-19 Basketball team, it will not represent the outcome of one country’s national team winning or losing in an international tournament. Instead, it will be the team of an unbridled Director of Youth and Sports, unchecked by any authority and abusing his power so that his U-19 basketball team can contest against national teams selected by National Associations that are under the management of the respective FIBA representatives of their countries. The blundering
intervention by Kumar to undermine the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) reeks of tyranny and speaks of someone being poorly informed, and thus cannot avoid poor thinking as noted by Louis Quatorze - and may I add poor decision making. Thus, we have Mr. Kumar the Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Commission (NSC), a Commission comprised of: Conrad Plummer, Vidushi Persaud, Peter Green, Alicia Fortune, Sean Richmond, Frank De Abreu, Steve Ninvalle, Hector Edwards, Pradeep Balram and Cheryl Thompson. These ladies and

gentlemen on the Commission, all perceived to be erudite professional sports administrators, are quite content to maintain their positions on the privileged NSC Board and seem to go along with whatever abnormality is done in their name. None of the members of the NSC have spoken out in protest against Mr. Kumar’s unrestrained behavior. Why? Is it for Insider Status and Benefits? We also have an appointed “General Manager” of the IGG: Dr. Karen Pilgrim, who seems quite content to sway flexibly with any dictate that is rendered by Kumar, be it accommodating the U-19 players at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, a venue wholly unsuitable and unfit for the hosting of our young athletes, or the NSC dishonouring an agreement affirmed by the General Manager of the IGG. Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), VicePresident, Dr. Pilgrim and the members of the NSC Board need to heed the words of Howard Zinn: “If we remember those times and places – and there are many – where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction”. I have over the past two months mentioned several times to the media the nonsupport of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports

(MCYS) to assist the Guyana Men’s and Women’s team that attended the July 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It is my belief that the non-support was the vengeful work of Kumar and that Minister Dr. Frank Anthony is being undermined by Kumar’s talk and action, which show no respect to the Minister of MCYS and the sports community. The genesis of Kumar’s non-support was evident to the Guyanese public when the National Basketball Squads were locked out of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, all because the (GABF) rightfully stated in the media that GABF is the sole governing body for basketball in Guyana and has the capacity to organise and manage the basketball
component of IGG. It was further stated that only the GABF has the mandate to select players and coaches to represent Guyana in Basketball. Dr. Anthony needs to rein in Mr. Kumar and put an end to Kumar’s irresponsible, petty and lawless behaviour. It was only recently that the President of Guyana, His Excellency President Donald Ramotar stated ‘If you’re going to represent our country, you shouldn’t have to pay to train’; as published in Guyana Chronicle and dated June 11, 2014. It was only after President Ramotar made the statement that the GABF was allowed free use of the Sports Hall for the training of the National Squads. We need another Presidential intervention to stem the rut emanating from Mr. Kumar. Nigel Hinds GABF President

when the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) continued yesterday at Sabina Park. Chasing 87 (D/L method), Gayle blasted two fours and four sixes off 36 balls to carry his team to 91-3 in 14 overs. Gayle and Chadwick Walton set their team on course with an opening stand of 44 before Walton was LBW to Ben Laughlin for 14. The Tallawahs then lost Jermaine Blackwood (11) and Andre Russell (01) before victory was achieved; Adam Voges was not out on three. Laughlin claimed 2-28 and Rakeem Cornwall 1-17. Earlier, Jerome Taylor and Nikita Miller shared seven wickets between them to restrict the Hawksbills for 89-9 after the game was eventually reduced to 17 overs due to rain. Taylor snared 4-18 from three overs while Miller captured 3-17 off four. Ben Dunk scored 23 at the top of the order, but the middle order failed miserably, reducing the Hawksbills to 48-6 in 12 overs. Carlos Brathwaite slammed two fours and one six to top score with 24 off 16 balls while Schaya Thomas (Continued on page 45)

resh off his dominating performance during the staging of the first leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) which was held at Bushy Park in Barbados last month, Canada-based Guyanese race driver Kristian Jeffrey produced another scintillating display at the wheels when he finished on the podium on debut at the Canadian Touring Car Championships. Jeffrey, driving for the Blanchet Motorsport team at Shannonville double header on July 26-27, piloting a Honda Civic Si, the young speedster ended third after qualifying fourth on the grid
on Sunday. On Saturday, Jeffrey showed his class again when he qualified eight on the grid and progressed up the field to end one spot shy of another podium finish. The emerging young driver has been enjoying an incredible season so far since making his impressive debut at the CMRC and showed how much he had learned in a short time after being locked in an intense battle with championship leader Michael Sallenbach in addition to other great drivers. The multi-talented sportsman is a former karting champion and national Squash champion and his success to date means that he has managed to transform his outstanding exploits from
the other disciplines on to the track both in the Caribbean and Canada. The CMRC second leg is set for Trinidad and Tobago and no doubt the young speedster has his sights already set on procuring more valuable points for his native Guyana as it positions itself to win the overall Country title. Jeffrey, who
leads the current points standing in the Individual category, will also be aiming to stretch his lead and gain valuable advantage over his rivals that include his father Kevin. Kaieteur Sport extends best wishes to Kristian in his future endeavours and we also hope that he continues to make his family and Guyana proud.

DDL MAINTAINS TRADITIONAL SUPPORT
KMTC Emancipation Horse Race Meet...
F
or more than two decades Demerara Distillers Ltd has supported the Kennard Memorial Turf Club (KMTC) in its bid to promote the sport of horse racing. Such support has enabled organizers of the latter entity to stage action packed race meets that in turn has impacted positively on the fraternity. Once again, the Kennard M e m o r i a l Tu r f C l u b (KMTC) will showcase the nation’s top horses when that entity stages the Emancipation Horse Race Meeting at their Bushlot Farm, Corentyne Berbice facility this Sunday, August 3. Yesterday afternoon, DDL continued to demonstrate faith in the organizers and
one of their representatives, Trish Doodnauth, trooped to the Brickdam office of President of the KMTC where she handed over a cheque and trophy to offset the cost of the G1 & Lower race over a distance of 6 furlongs. The cash donation will be distributed among the top finishers in this race and the winning jockey will receive the lion’s share of $320,000. The second place finisher will pocket half that amount while the 3rd and 4th place finishers will receive $80,000 and $40, 000 respectively. The race will be sponsored under the Five O brand, a mild vodka with a lemon/lime flavour, and Ms. Doodnauth said that the
product is very refreshing and would be sold at the venue on race day. She praised the organizers for presenting great programmes in the past and said that she anticipates another well organized meet. “It is also important to note the level of professionalism displayed by the riders during these events which makes it a highly anticipated competition,” said Ms. Doodnauth moments after the gift had exchanged hands. Mr. Kennard thanked his benefactor while reiterating the importance of corporate support for sports events. “DDL has supported us for quite a number of years and naturally I wish, on behalf of the KMTC to extend
profound gratitude to those administrators while assuring them that their input is largely responsible for the sustenance of the sport,” Mr Kennard said. Earlier in the week, Ansa McAl had agreed to sponsor the ‘A & Lower’ race over a distance of one mile where the winning jockey receives one million dollars and the second place finisher pocketing half that amount. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $250,000 and $125, 000 respectively. A total of seven exciting races are scheduled for the day and the other events races on the card are the J3 Maiden over 5 furlongs, J1 & Lower over a similar distance, D3 & Lower, G1 & Lower and the I & Lower, all
Justice Kennard (R) gratefully accepts the cheque from Ms. Doonauth at his office yesterday over a distance of 6 furlongs. Horse owners are also reminded that all rules applicable to races under the auspices of the Guyana
Horse Racing Authority (GHRA), are in force. Entries closed Monday 31 last and no late entry will be accommodated.

REGIONAL U-19 3-DAY TOURNEY...
Chanderpaul’s ton puts Guyana in control By Sean Devers A magnificent unbeaten 1 3 2 f r o m Ta i g n a r i n e ‘Brandon’ Chanderpaul piloted Guyana to 310-9 declared on the second day of their third and final round Regional Under-19 3-day cricket encounter against Trinidad and Tobago at the world famous GCC ground Bourda, yesterday. The 18-year-old Chanderpaul became the only batsman to ‘carry his bat’ at this level; batting from start to finish as he produced the glue which held the Guyana innings together. The West Indies U-19 left-hander was at the crease for 482 minutes; faced 374 balls for his second ton at this level which was decorated with 12 delightful fours and a six. The Everest batsman began his innings at the start of play on Wednesday and he was still there when Guyana declared at Tea, yesterday. By the close T&T were
- T&T NEED 193 TO AVOID INNINGS DEFEAT TODAY bowled out for 117, 94 runs short of avoiding being asked to follow-on in a match that Guyana must win today to lift their 13th title at this level. Off-spinner Sharaz Ramcharran picked up 2-39 from 18 overs, Steven Sankar (2-25) and Daimon Waldron (2-9). Guyana enforced the follow-on, leaving T&T to make 193 to avoid an innings defeat today. On a day blessed with brilliant sunshine Guyana resumed on 228-5, Chanderpaul on 79 and Kemo Paul on 13; the pair took the score to 229 before Paul was well taken by a diving Justin Joseph at point off Anderson Phillip after adding just a single to his overnight score. Guyana quickly lost Kemol Savory for a duck when he played a big shot only to find mid-off, Samuel
Roopnarine striking at 232-7 to leave Chanderpaul in danger of running out of partners when just short of his ton. Chanderpaul, who maintained his composure and picked the gaps intelligently, however found a useful partner in Waldron who offered him excellent support as the partnership built nicely in sweltering heat. On an outfield which was slightly quicker than on the opening day and a pitch that got slower, Chanderpaul, watched by his father Shiv Chanderpaul and sister, played an imperious off drive off Roopnarine and followed it up with a punishing pull for four off a Jesse Bootan full toss to move into the nineties. With nine First-Class matches under his belt, Chanderpaul reached his first Regional hundred on
home soil with a stupendous drive back past Bootan, his 11th boundary, to follow up his 104 against the Leewards l a s t y e a r. H i s w e l l constructed century took 433 minutes and came from 339 balls. He celebrated with a thumping pull off Seetal Akeel which reached the mid-wicket boundary like a bullet, stepping on the gas after reaching his century. Waldron (13) edged Seetal to the Keeper at 280-8 before Sankar was removed by Joseph for a duck three runs later. Chanderpaul, then lofted Joseph to deep mid-wicket where Brandon Jaggernauth floored the catch in the penultimate over before Lunch with his score on 126. By lunch Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 132 and Guyana on 310-9 at which time the declaration was made. Roopnarine (3-60), Joseph (2-73) and Seetal (244) were the wicket takers for T&T. When the visitors
began their reply they quickly lost Amir Jangoo (8) who edged a catch to the Keeper at 18-1 before Brian Christmas, who was peppered with a barrage of short balls on a dead track, was trapped LBW by Basdeo for six at 25-2. Opener Jeremy Solozano majestically cut Paul behind point before caressing the next ball gloriously for four as he and Camilio Carimbocas carried the score to 49 before they both departed in the space of a run to leave on 50-4. The stylish 18-year-old Solozano was taken headhigh by Skipper Brian Sattaur for 23 after batting for 81 minutes and facing 76 balls. The T&T Captain hit four boundaries in his innings and again flattered to deceive. A brilliant piece of fielding at square cover by Sattaur accounted for Carimbocas (12) vie the run out route and by Tea T&T were 51-4. In overcast
conditions after Tea, another spattering of spectators saw the Guyanese bowlers work hard for almost an hour without success as Brandon Jaggernauth and Jameel Maniram carried T&T to 82 before off-spinner Waldron removed Maniram for a 60ball 23 (3x4) to bring Justin Joseph to the wicket. Ramcharran looked the best Guyanese spinner and soon got rid of Joseph (1) to leave the teenagers from Carnival Country precariously placed at 86-7 with a strong breeze blowing across the ground and a rainbow in the sky. Just before the close, a Sankar googly which kept low trapped Phillip LBW for an aggressive 23 (4x4 1x6) and one run later it was 113-9 when Waldron got one to bounce for wicket-keeper Savory to hold the catch on the second attempt, sending Bootan on his way. Today’s final day is set to commence at 09:55hrs and admission is free.
Openers Leroy Lugg and Odaine Mc Catty turned in commendable performances to give Jamaica the advantage on the second day of their third and final round game of the Regional Under19 3-Day tournament against t h e Wi n d w a r d I s l a n d s yesterday. In reply to Windwards first innings score of 252, the Jamaicans closed the day on 272-6 after 98 overs to lead by 20 with four wickets intact at the Guyana National Stadium. Lugg stroked 109
and Mc Catty scored 70 in an enterprising stand of 133. Gidron Pope provided his team with the breakthrough when he had Mc Catty caught by Roland Cato. Lugg then added 64 for the second wicket with Nicholas Walters before he was caught and bowled by Deron Hypoltie. Walters and Shahid Crooks continued to frustrate their opponents with a third wicket partnership of 40 before Crooks went for 14. Windward Islands fought
themselves back into the contest with the wickets of Walters (34), Romaine Morris (06) and Mark Parchment (02), but Ramaal Lewis (16*) and Ryon Burnette (04*) saw their team to the close without further hiccups adding 18 for seventh wicket. Hypolite has so far taken 2-55, Pope 2-64, Lewis 1-23 and Edward 1-37. Jamaica have gathered 5.1 points and Windwards 2.1 from the contest so far. Today is the final day.
Leewards and Barbados heading for a draw at Enmore Lugg (109), Mc Catty (70) hand Springer’s ton highlights day two action Jamaica advantage on day two
B
arbados and the Leeward Islands have both posted 250 plus totals on a very good Enmore track and unless something sensational transpires today, their final round Regional Under-19 three-day cricket contest seems set to end in a draw. The Leewards started this game just behind leaders Guyana with .2 of a point less than the home team and one eye was being kept on the Guyana / Trinidad &Tobago match at Everest and the one at Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara. By the close of play on day two, Barbados were 254-6 from 64 overs in reply to the Islander’s 292 all out from 112 overs, the first innings still not decided. S h a m a r S p r i n g e r ’s century, the seventh of the tournament and the second in this match, following Casey Carty’s ton in the Leewards innings, spearheaded Barbados within 38 runs of the Leewards’ total with four wickets in hand. Springer is unbeaten on
118 and would want to try and join Dave Joseph of the Leewards who achieved the feat against Guyana at Eve Leary in 1989, as the only batsmen to score a double century at this level on South American soil. With h im is ViceCaptain Chad Williams on 19, they would be keen to extend their 60-run seventh wicket stand to something huge on the fast Enmore outfield having joined forces at 196-6 when West Indies Under-19 pacer Alzarri Joseph removed Matthew Jones for eight. Barbados lost Nicholas Kirton (4) with just four runs on the board and when offspinner Shaquille Martina, whose mother is Guyanese, removed Skipper Joshua Drakes (12) at 43-2 and Jafari Toppin (8) and Leniko Boucher (4) both departed with the score on 52, the Leewards must have been harboring thoughts of winning their first title since 2001 in Guyana. But Springer and Akil Greenidge who eventually fell for 59 added 123 for the
fifth wicket as the Leewards bowlers struggled to separate the pair and although Martina bowled Greenidge at 176-5 it was going to be very difficult for the Leeward to win outright. Springer and Williams then ensured that the Leewards will have to wait until next year to try again unless something extremely dramatic happens today even though Martina and Asharn Hodge, with two wickets each, have bowled well. Earlier, the Leewards resumed on 240-6 and Jaeel Clarke with an attractive 52 helped them to rally to eight short of 300. Williams finished with 4-52 and Drakes supported with 3-93. Play on the final day today is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs and unless the T&T batsmen save their best for last or it rains heavily in the city, Guyana are well on track to taking their first Under-19 title in the seven years after their Under-15 team claimed their third Regional title and first in 14 years on Wednesday.
GCB congratulates U-15 team
W
ith a proud heart, the executives, members and staff of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) extend congratulations to the national team for capturing the 2014 edition of the Regional U-15 50-over title. Needing to win their final round game against host Jamaica, Guyana who began the match leading the table by a slim .1 of a point, defeated their opponents by 11 runs on Wednesday at Melbourne. A release from the GCB stated that they were confident that this team would have
done well. Out of five games, the Guyanese registered four wins and suffered one defeat to finish on 25 points while runner-up Barbados ended on 19.5. Apart from marking its name on the title, Guyana were awarded the most disciplined team while Kevin Sinclair received the best bowler prize for claiming 11 wickets. Coach Julian Moore and Manager Andy Ramnarine were given special accolades. “We are now looking forward to our U-19 team beating Trinidad and Tobago and take the three-day title”, the release further stated.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES Blessing Okagbare wins 200m to seal sprint double security members sacked after - Jamaica’s males sweep 200m
N
i g e r i a ’s B l e s s i n g Okagbare completed a Glasgow 2014 sprint double by winning the women’s 200m ahead of English duo Jodie Williams and Bianca Williams. The 25-year-old, who won Monday’s 100m, claimed victory in 22.25 seconds. The two English sprinters ran personal best times, as did their compatriot Anyika Onuora, who took fourth. England’s Jazmin Sawyers won silver in the women’s long jump but Shara Proctor had to pull out after picking up an injury attempting her first jump. Sawyers, a Winter Youth Olympic games silver medallist in the bobsleigh, recorded a distance of 6.54 metres to finish second behind Nigeria’s Ese Brume. There were tears for Proctor, though, who pulled up halfway down the runway holding her left thigh, and was unable to continue. Jodie Williams and Bianca Williams shed tears of a different kind by
claiming respective silver and bronze in the 200m. The former, a 20-yearold who won silver in the 2 0 1 0 Wo r l d J u n i o r Championships, ran 22.50secs to finish just 0.08 ahead of her 21-year-old team-mate. In the men’s 200m, Jamaica swept the medals, with Rasheed Dwyer taking gold in 20.14, ahead of Warren Weir and Jason Livermore. Two more Jamaicans, Kaliese Spencer and Janieve Russell, won gold and bronze respectively in the women’s 400m hurdles, but the Hampden Park cheers were reserved for home favourite Eilidh Child, who took silver. South Africa’s Cornel Fredericks won the equivalent men’s event in a time of 48.50, seeing off the challenge of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jehue Gordon, who took silver, and Jeffery Gibson of the Bahamas, who claimed bronze. England’s Niall Flannery was fourth. Botswana’s Nijel Amos produced a stunning run
down the final straight to beat Kenyan David Rudisha to 800m Commonwealth gold. Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir put in a majestic display to win his first Commonwealth gold medal in the men’s T54 1500m, while fellow English athlete Jade Jones won her first senior medal with bronze in the women’s T54 1500m. England’s Jessica Judd claimed a superb victory in the second semi-final of the women’s 800m. She was joined in Friday’s final by compatriot Jenny Meadows and Scotland’s Lynsey Sharp, who were a disappointing fourth and fifth respectively in the first semi, but qualified courtesy of being the fastest losers. S c o t l a n d ’s E m i l y Dudgeon narrowly missed out on qualification despite finishing fourth in her semi. India’s Vikas Shive Gowda won the men’s discus with a throw of 63.64, with Cypriot Apostolos Parellis taking silver and Jason Morgan of Jamaica claiming bronze.
taking ‘selfies’ with Usain Bolt
T
hree members of security at the Commonwealth Games have been sacked after taking a photograph with Usain Bolt. The incident occurred when the Jamaican sprinter was training beside Hampden Park ahead of his country’s 4x100m relay heats tonight. Volunteers at the 2014 Glasgow Games have now been warned by supervisors to remain professional at all times, in light of the controversy. In addition they have also been told not to approach Bolt or any other athletes for ‘selfies’ with the competition near to a close. One volunteer at Hampden told the Evening Standard that this wasn’t the first-time that Bolt had been approached by staff asking for a picture with him. ‘The [supervisor] was saying we shouldn’t be doing that without mobile phones,’ the volunteer said. ‘Everyone was taking photographs of him but these two guys got punted [sacked].’ Bolt, the double 100m,

A Glasgow 2014 spokeswoman said: ‘Sword Security can confirm three members of contract security staff have been removed from roles at Glasgow 2014’s training facilities at Lesser
Hampden after breaching conditions of their employment. ‘All three are still employed by the company but are no longer working at Glasgow 2014. Sword Security’s polices are designed to ensure the privacy of athletes is fully respected in the lead-up to and during competition.’ (Mailonline)

We will correct out weaknesses and win By Rawle Welch Correcting the weaknesses which evidently and unfortunately manifested themselves during their semi-final encounter against defending champions Christianburg / Wismar Secondary School was the fixation of Bush Lot Secondary School Head Coach John Gordon as he took the team through their paces yesterday, at the Seafield Community Centre ground in West Coast Berbice. Gordon was speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly before he commenced a practice session with the players ahead of their third place showdown against BV Secondary School on Sunday as the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition climaxes, at the National Stadium. According to the Head Coach the guys squandered a good opportunity to beat the defending champs after taking a slim 1-0 lead deep into regulation time before a moment of lapse allowed CWSS to gain the equaliser and then go on to win the game in a penalty shootout. “We had an excellent chance to win the game, but our penalty shooting was terrible, while the midfielders were conceding possession too easily and those mistakes caused us the game and a place in the final,” Gordon said. He said that is why they’ve focused mainly on correcting those faults, adding that while they’ve
- Gordon never seen BV play, they are confident of winning providing the players correct the identified weaknesses. Gordon was adamant that Bush Lot possesses very good players and assured their fans that come Sunday they will definitely see a more prepared and focused team. Responding to the question of whether the t e a m ’s o u t s t a n d i n g performance this year has heightened awareness of the sport at the school he said it really has and was confident that come next year they will be better prepared and could go all the way. “Even with the loss of a few players for the next tournament we still have a lot of other layers who will come up from Third Form to replace those going off and they are just as good so we are in good shape moving forward,” Gordon assured. He revealed that the plan right now is to construct a field at the school so that the players could practice constantly just like CWSS and a few others have the luxury of doing. Gordon reckoned players such as Captain Marlon Nicholson, who is having a wonderful tournament, Royan Schultz, Adrian Price, Jevon McKenzie, Eric Callender and goalkeeper Shane James will be the ones that their chance of winning will
