Community support necessary to help tackle maternal mortality – CMO The local health sector is looking to considerably lessen the prevalence of teenage pregnancy to help reduce its maternal mortality rate. According to Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shamdeo Persaud, moves, including a fervent education drive, have already been engaged in this regard. While there have been some evident gains, Dr Persaud is hopeful that Guyana will see even greater results in the near future. He alluded to a recent report out of the United States of America which suggests that the teenage pregnancy rate there has been reduced by four-fold over the last 10 years. And according to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Guyana can realise similar results, even as he revealed that to bolster local efforts the Health Ministry has, for instance, been d i r e c t i n g efforts towards expanding its contraceptive programme. Dr Persaud, who was at the time responding to a query from this publication regarding the moves being made by the Health Ministry to arrest the maternal mortality rate, acknowledged that “teenage or children pregnancy is something we are hoping to reduce because they are at a very high risk of developing complications and dying also.” And according to Dr Persaud, Guyana has recorded girls as young as 12 giving birth. However, he disclosed that based on the health sector’s data there has been a decrease in the number of girls under 16 becoming pregnant and giving birth. C u r r e n t l y, t h e r e p o r t e d percentage for under-16
mothers stands at .5 per cent. But according to Dr Persaud, there are still some young mothers between the age group of 16 and 19, which is still very worrying. This latter category of teenage mothers, he noted, translates to about two per cent of all pregnancies seen at a national level by the health sector. “We hope to see this brought down...Of course this will go well for women’s health in general, because it would not only allow girls and women to be able to access education, but also help them to have their own careers develop and so on without the interference of a pregnancy,” Dr Persaud added. In helping to reduce potential ma t e r n a l complications and by extension maternal deaths, the CMO revealed that the Health Ministry has been relying heavi l y o n t h e support of communities i n i t s q u e st to address maternal concerns. He disclosed that currently the Ministry has groups operating in some vulnerable communities. And groups, he noted, could be made up of religious members who could render their support s i m p l y b y c h e c k i n g on pregnant mothers to ensure that they keep their clinic dates in order to get their vaccines, get relevant tests, and take all necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and unborn child. According to Dr Persaud too, “one of the biggest issues in the rural areas is to have w o m e n d eliver within a
health institution and by a health professional.” “We have reduced the occurrence of unattended deliveries to less than four per cent, but there are still a few women out there who deliver at home for one reason or another, but we would really like to see a lot more women delivered by professionals in facilities that are equipped.” Moreover, Dr Persaud disclosed the Ministry has been partnering with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to put in place infrastructure such as maternal waiting homes, especially for those pregnant women from interior locations, who might require expert care during their pregnancies. “We have pre-empted this with women who, for example, are at their fifth pregnancies, and are going into that period of multiple deliveries,” said Dr Persaud as he underscored the potential risk a woman could encounter at this point of her life. “It is for this reason we bring them out to a point where they can access the Georgetown Public Hospital or one of the hospitals that might have caesarean section facilities or blood that can be transfused if the need arises,” Dr Persaud noted. Other high-risk groups that the health sector has been paying keen attention to, he explained, are those pregnant women over the age of 35 who could be equally at risk as those under 16. Guyana during the past year recorded a total of 18 maternal deaths, and according to the CMO the aim of the Health Ministry is to reduce this to no more than 11 per annum.
Accomplished E’bo musician turns 100 One of the latest centenarians from Essequibo is an accomplished musician. Clement Carrington Abrahams, known as “Uncle Clemmie” or “AB”, was born on August 7, 1914 and `hails from Adventure Village, Essequibo Coast. Family members gathered on the special day in which “Uncle Clemmie” had been looking f o r w a r d t o , t e l l i n g his children that he just, “wanted to know what it will feel like to be 100 years old.” He celebrated his birthday with a thanksgiving service surrounded by his family, priests, fellow parishioners and friends. “Uncle Clemmie”, whose wife Ivy has passed away, spent most of his working life at the Essequibo Boys School (EBS), The Youth Corps

Vlissengen Rd. robbery/murder…
Second suspect charged Another man has been charged for the murder of dredge owner Ashook Ragghu, who was gunned down two Mondays ago while at a traffic light on Vlissengen Road. Jermaine Otto, 25, of 735 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was remanded when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Otto, along with Travis McDougall, is accused of slaying the 43-year-old Pike Street, Georgetown businessman during the course of a robbery. The dead man’s wife, Shyrazadi Ragghu, was also robbed of $4M, but survived after being shot in her upper thigh. Otto was not required to plead to the murder charge. The case was prosecuted by Police Corporal, Seon Blackman who did not reveal the details of the murder. However, Otto’s alleged accomplice, 24-year-old Travis McDougall of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown was charged with the robbery/ murder and was remanded to jail last Friday. During McDougall’s hearing, the Prosecution related that at about 13:00 hours on August 18, last, Ragghu and his wife were travelling in motorcar PGG 8291 along Vlissengen Road. They stopped at the traffic light at the Vlissengen Road and Regent Street junction. The court was told that the Ragghus were cornered by McDougall and his accomplice (now identified as Otto), who rode up with a CG motorcycle to the driver’s side of their vehicle. After shooting Ragghu in the chest, the duo allegedly grabbed the victim’s haversack,

which contained $4M, but Mrs. Ragghu held onto it. The woman released the bag after the robbers shot her in the thigh. The men then escaped on their motorcycle with the moneybag. Mr. Ragghu was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, while his wife was hospitalized at the same institution. McDougall was arrested and later identified during an identification parade. McDougall’s attorney, Kendaise Rodney, claimed
that detectives used an electrical taser on her client. Her claims were refuted by the Prosecutor, who promptly stated that a medical examination had already been prepared for the accused. During yesterday’s hearing, Otto claimed that he had no knowledge of the crime and that he “just heard that he was a suspect in a robbery matter.” He was remanded to prison and is scheduled to return to court on October 6 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Forklift driver on causing US-based Guyanese to face new PI Justice Ian Chang death charge granted $1M bail hasChief …as CJ quashes murder committal quashed a murder A forklift driver has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a crash on Dennis Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, which claimed the life of a senior bookbinder attached to the University of Guyana. One week after the accident, Balgobin Persaud, 69, identified as the man behind the wheel of the forklift, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. He was granted $1M bail. The court heard that on August 18, last, on Dennis Street, Persaud drove in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting a forklift, thereby causing the death of 51-year-old Latchman Sukdeo. Persaud pleaded not guilty and applied for bail. The case was prosecuted by Police Corporal, Seon Blackman who said that the accident occurred around
Victim: Latchman Sukdeo 08:30 hours two Mondays ago. He explained that the driver had left an establishment in Campbellville, and when he turned onto Dennis Street, two metal spikes from the forklift collided with the motorcycle that Sukdeo was
riding. The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed while receiving treatment. Blackman said that the matter was reported and subsequent investigations led to Persaud being arrested and charged. Persaud’s lawyer, Lawrence Hamilton, asked that he be released on reasonable bail. The lawyer told the Court that he is married with three children and is not a flight risk. His application was met with no objections from the Prosecution who informed the Court that Persaud had been placed on station bail and had been cooperating fully with the Police during the investigation. Bail was granted and the case is set to be called again before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 25.
committal against a US-based Guyanese, paving the way for a new preliminary inquiry (PI) to be conducted. This follows a successful petition to the High Court by Attorney at Law Mursaline Bacchus on behalf of his client Ramdhani Persaud for an order Nisi to compel Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo and the prosecution to show cause why a murder committal should not be quashed. The order has been made absolute by Chief Justice Ian Chang, which means that Persaud who had been committed to stand trial in the High Court on the charge of murder committed on his wife, will have to undergo a new Preliminary Inquiry. Forty-eight year-old Persaud called ‘Prakash’ or ‘Prak’, of 1071 New Area Canefield, East Canje, is accused of murdering his wife Bibi Shameena Deen on March 20, 2012 at their home. Persaud is alleged to have
Ramdhani Persaud shot dead the woman during a dispute. The man in an affidavit in support of his move to the High Court, stated that he had appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court where 15 persons testified during a preliminary inquiry. Persaud also stated that the committal was “unlawful and contrary to law, in breach of natural justice, unreasonable. It was made
without any evidence or sufficient or admissible evidence and irrational”, and there was also no evidence upon which the applicant could have been committed to stand trial. After first perusing the matter, the Chief Justice had granted the Order Nisi of Certiorari directed to Magistrate Nagamootoo, the Director of Public Prosecution and the Commissioner of Police or his subordinates to show cause why a Writ /Order of Certiorari; should not have been issued against them to have the matter quashed on the grounds that it was bad in law. After perusing arguments in response by Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali Hack, the order was made absolute and Persaud is to face a new Preliminary Inquiry before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs Marcus at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.
Jamaica Health ministry moves to deal with deadly Ebola disease The Ministry of Health has started the refurbishing of a section of a public hospital in the Corporate Area to be used as an isolation unit to house persons showing symptoms of Ebola, should the deadly virus reach Jamaica’s shores. Director of Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services Dr Marion
Bullock DuCasse said preparation for such a unit started even before the Ebola’s outbreak, as part of Jamaica’s readiness to deal with incidents of cholera. “We went through training sessions in our preparedness for cholera and it is the same precautions that will be utilised; each hospital will be able to operate on the basis that we say if you have one suspected case where would you put them or if you have five or 10 or so on,” she explained. Dr Bullock DuCasse and a team from the ministry,
headed by Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson, were addressing Jamaica Observer journalists at the newspaper’s weekly Monday Exchange at the newspaper’s head offices in Kingston. “We are having a workshop today (yesterday) to meet with senior health teams from all hospitals and health departments from a wide cross section of categories and we are giving them the required information to see what gaps exist,” she said. She noted that while all hospitals have isolation

Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health Dr Kevin Harvey, in explaining how the four-bed facility will work, said it will be a self-contained unit consisting of a special room for health workers to get dressed and gowned, while the patients’ room will have its own storage facilities, a self-contained garbage mechanism to control
infectious material going out as well as its own air conditioning system with a one way pressure flow. “This facility will also be able to host any kind of infectious patient from Ebola to Tubercolosis to Cholera,” he said. Meanwhile, Dr Bullock DuCasse said that as part of the World Health Organisation Ebola recommendations, Jamaica has been asked to heighten surveillance to ensure that the country is able to detect, diagnose and ensure rapid containment. In doing so, Jamaica, she said, has to ensure the health facilities have the relevant isolation rooms and that the staff is trained to use standard precautions given that nine per cent of those now affected in West Africa are health care workers.

A return to the way we are What happens if general and regional elections are called within three months after the passage of a noconfidence motion? There are a number of theoretical possibilities, one of which is a return to the status quo. A return to the status quo means that the PPPC holds the reins of Executive power and the combined opposition holds legislative power. Is this progress or a step backward? For the political opposition, this would represent a step backward, since it would mean that they would have gained nothing from the recalling of the government and the holding of elections. For the people of Guyana, it would mean
having to endure yet another period in which there is haggling and obstruction within the National Assembly. Already the country’s development has been adversely affected. No investor, other than those interested in our natural resources, is going to sink significant sums into our country, given the political instability that a minority government creates. This is why it was important for the parties in the National Assembly to make an extra special effort to ensure that the minority government/ majority parliamentary opposition model worked. Reducing the government to a minority was not quite the
objective that the opposition parties were seeking when elections were called in 2011. But achieving a majority in parliament was perhaps their greatest accomplishment. Unfortunately they have squandered the opportunities that this majority opened. Instead of working hard to ensure deeper political cooperation between the government and the opposition, something that would have enhanced the credibility of the shared governance concept, the opposition has been belligerent. Instead of using their oneseat majority to coerce the PPPC into greater shared governance, this was used to go after the PPPC and

Now dem boys seh that de Waterfalls boss man don’t have no timber concession suh he can’t get duty free concession. But that is wha dem claiming. encroach on its right to govern. This approach was expectedly rejected by the PPPC. Today relations between the PPPC and the opposition parties are at their lowest ebb ever. The opposite should have been true. Power sharing has been undermined. It has lost credibility in the eyes of the public. A return to the status quo following new elections will intensify mass disillusionment with shared governance. Not only then would the opposition have lost ground if there is a return to the status quo following elections, but one of their main platforms, shared governance, is likely to be permanently discredited. A return to the status quo will also end the political careers of a number of leaders. For the AFC, the situation will be dire. If their no-confidence motion leads to a return to the status quo, then the political careers of a number of their
present leaders will be over. These leaders would have failed to make any advances and the party is going to look towards a more youthful and dynamic leadership. For APNU, the failure to win the Executive Presidency, which looks almost impossible now, will mean the end of the political career of David Granger. For someone who was not known to be part of the political leadership of the PNC and the PNCR prior to being named as the party’s presidential candidate, this will be a sad outcome. Mr. Granger has not been given sufficient time to become a popular political leader. If he fails to win the Executive Presidency the next time around, it will mean that he will be pressured to resign and someone else will have to assume the leadership of the PNCR. For Donald Ramotar, there is everything at stake. If there was anyone who could have promoted greater
cooperation with the opposition parties it was him. He is a decent, honest and honourable man. But from day one he was confronted by a belligerent opposition. He was pushed back on the defensive and remains so. It is not likely that he will look forward to a return to the Presidency under a minority government. There are therefore grave implications for Guyana and the country’s political parties should elections produce the same results. Guyana would have gone no place. Instead of the political parties in the opposition accepting responsibility for this state of affairs, they will deflect their own failures onto the government, which is what we have today. In other words, the status quo will continue.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
The Indian middle class voted against the PPP in 2011 Mr. Ralph Ramkarran wrote that the AFC drove its way into the PPP’s working class space in Berbice and received electoral support from such a class in 2011, thus reducing the PPP’s majority. Mr. Ramkarran felt the PPP retained Indian middle class embrace and he wonders if the Indian middle stratum will punish the PPP in the forthcoming general elections next year. The statistics do not corroborate these findings of Mr. Ramkarran. The AFC got three seats from Berbice and three from Region 4. It meant that all those votes could not have come from the proletarian constituencies only. The PPP lost a substantial amount of Indian middle class voters in 2011
and that is likely to increase in 2015. It should be mentioned that contrary to what Mr. Ramkarran posited, in 2006 all the AFC votes were not from the African electorate. In 2006, too, the Indian middle class gravitated to the AFC, though in less numbers than in 2011. Everybody talks about the changing ethnic demography that has adversely affected the PPP’s percentage in 2011 and that will doom them forever, because the Indian majority is a thing of the past. Be that as it may, the Indian middle class began to be alienated from the PPP from 2006 onwards, but certain factors stood in the way of an exodus. First, the 2006 poll came too close after the
bloody drama of Buxton. The 2002-2005 crime syndrome deterred the Indian petty bourgeoisie from going to the AFC, because memories of the violence were too fresh. Secondly, the AFC was born just literally months before the 2006 election. It didn’t have time to showcase its personnel and values. If the AFC had more time, it would have received more Indian middle class ballots, because Raphael Trotman was seen by that class as a decent Black man that they could work with. By 2011, the Indian middle stratum had bolted. First, Jagdeo was a gigantic reason. The Indian middle class saw Jagdeo as a crude, illmannered corrupt man that was in billions of ways
different from Cheddi Jagan. This class may go back if the PPP can produce what the Indian middle class wants, a politician that behaves like Cheddi Jagan. Unfortunately for the PPP, it hasn’t got such a person, but the AFC has one in Moses Nagamootoo. Nagamootoo should meticulously monitor his security arrangements as the next general elections draw near. Secondly, in 2016, a large contingent of Indian activists moved into the AFC, thereby giving the Indian middle class an alternative to the PPP. There is no reason to believe that this will not continue from here on. Thirdly, with Nigel Hughes replacing Trotman as an African that is trustworthy,
the Indian petty bourgeois will be less uncertain about backing the AFC. There are other factors apart from the ones outlined above; another is the man himself, Donald Ramotar. There is no way a politician like Ramotar can win back the Indian middle class. Simply put, Mr. Ramotar just doesn’t have it to captivate even the upper working class level of Indian voters. It will take Herculean efforts to work on Mr. Ramotar and time is not on his side – the 2015 election is months away. What analysts need to know is that apart from decreasing Indian numbers in the population, Indian culture itself is changing, and rapidly so. Cheddi Jagan was a god to semi-literate and illiterate rural Indians. He could have fooled, cajoled, manipulated them and they wouldn’t have known what hit them. This is the nature of such people not only in Guyana but all over the world. The East Indian of the Cheddi Jagan era is dead and gone. The East Indian of Guyana in today’s world is a youth with a Samsung Galaxy
Frederick Kissoon S5 that he/she uses the entire day listening into and seeing what the world is doing. He/ she is not cannon fodder as what they were in Jagan’s days. There is no way a Clement Rohee, Donald Ramotar, Roger Luncheon, Gail Teixeira, Komal Chand, Indra Chandarpal, and company can even talk to them, much less persuade them. But it is these same has-beens who will be leading the campaign trail in 2015, with Bharrat Jagdeo in the middle making things even worse. There is a growing number out there who believe the PPP will lose a majority again in 2015. I beg to differ. My analysis is based on the faults of the AFC’s 2011 campaign. If they could learn from the previous mistakes, like the neglect of Region 3 during the campaign, the PPP will lose outright in 2015.

Town Clerk saga continues… A personal bodyguard employed by Town Clerk (ag) Carol Sooba was forced to remove reinforcements from her office doors, hours after a decision by the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) was made to send her on administrative leave. During the removal of the barricade, Sooba allegedly assaulted a media operative who was taking photos at the time. It is understood that a police report was made and charges are likely against the acting Town Clerk. Kaieteur News understands that the bodyguard ripped through the wooden bars, and hasp and staples which were placed on the doors as a consequence of the decision taken by the Council at a Statutory meeting on Monday. The majority of City Councillors voted in favour of recovering tax money “illegally” waived on behalf of a businessman, and to send Sooba and City Treasurer Ron Mc Calman on administrative leave with immediate effect. The issue is a direct result of a move taken by Local Government Minister, Norman Whittaker and Sooba to waive some $27M in rates

South G/town telephone services Court Supt. obtains... down after GWI excavation
GT&T workers up to last evening were attempting to restore services to customers in the South G/town area. Wireline telephone and data services in Meadowbrook, Durban Backlands, Lodge Housing Scheme, Tucville, Stevedore and Postal Housing Scheme, and Guyhoc have been severely disrupted as a result of damage to infrastructure in the area. According to the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), its buried
facilities suffered damage while the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) was undertaking excavation works on Monday. “GT&T’s technical team is currently in the process of assessing the extent of the damage and the steps necessary to restore service to the affected customers in the shortest possible time. The company is also
addressing the vandalism of a 300-pair cable in the vicinity of Princes and High Streets, in the Werk-en-Rust area.” The telephone company said that both careless excavation and acts of vandalism continue to affect its overall roll-out of service, as the unanticipated service disruptions necessitate repeated diversion of
technical personnel and resources away from the scheduled work programme. “What is more…these restoration works are costly. For the year to date, GT&T has expended over US$3M to effect repairs caused by vandalism and careless excavation.” The company said it “sincerely regrets the avoidable inconvenience these thoughtless and malicious acts have occasioned and urge all Guyanese to be vigilant and to report any suspected acts of vandalism”.

Another officer now attorney at law, Dexter Todd, had resigned from the force to pursue legal studies on his own. Kaieteur News understands that several other police officers have completed law degrees at the University of Guyana but were not granted approval to continue on to the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. Additionally, a few more are presently enrolled at UG, but given the limitations that are being touted by the Council for Legal Education at the University of the West Indies, there is no certainty that they will be accepted at Hugh Wooding. It’s been more than 15 years since a police officer was granted leave with pay to pursue studies at Hugh Wooding, the last being the late Commissioner Henry Greene.

Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee in an invited comment told this newspaper that he is certain that approval for ranks to pursue tertiary education overseas was something that is long overdue. He said that the ranks have been making constant representation for their applications to proceed on study leave to be approved. “Once the required qualification is there and other considerations are taken into account like the rank of the officer and the need for the required skills, I don’t see a problem arising,” Minister Rohee told this newspaper. Deputy Superintendent Cooper was touted as one of the country’s top police prosecutors, having prosecuted several high profile matters while he was stationed on the East Coast of Demerara during the crime wave of 2002 to 2008. His past posting was the Court Superintendent at the Police ‘A’ Division, supervising the main cadre of police prosecutors who operate at the Georgetown and Providence Magistrates’ Courts. Cooper leaves Guyana for Trinidad on Sunday.

Kaneville fatal shooting…
Suspect no older than 17 - Police Police are hunting for a teenager whom they claimed shot and killed 24-year-old Mark Drexel London, during an alleged attempted robbery more than two weeks ago at Kaneville, on the East Bank of Demerara. According to the police, the suspect, who is no older than 17 years, was identified by a friend of the deceased who was near London when he was fatally shot, and other persons who claimed to be eyewitnesses to the incident. “Since the shooting, we have had persons coming forward, saying that they saw him (suspect) firing the shots. London’s friend also identified him… we have had more than 10 persons saying that he (suspect) shoot the victim,” a police source said. It is unclear whether the shooting death of the carpenter was robberyrelated, since eyewitnesses claimed that the suspect
boldly walked up to his target and demanded him to “gimme de ting, gimme de ting.” Kaieteur News understands that the teenage suspect made no attempt to injure or rob London’s friend who was with him at the time. “This man (suspect) walked up to Mark… I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but when he pulled the gun, Mark and his friend started to run and this boy (suspect) only firing shots at Mark,” a Kaneville resident who claimed to be an eyewitness to the shooting had told this newspaper. Kaieteur News understands that the police had obtained information that the suspect was hiding at his mother’s home at Vryheid’s Lust on the East Coast of Demerara, but when a police patrol turned up at the house, the suspect was nowhere to be found. “This guy is young, he is still in school… this is the time
DEAD: Mark Drexel London you think about your books and what you want to become… not about weapons and killing people,” a police source said. According to information, London, who was shot to his right shoulder, had gone into the Kaneville community, which is reportedly called “the house for criminals,” to meet with a friend who recently came out from the interior. Kaneville is a small community located at the back of Grove, between Craig and Diamond New Scheme.

From page 19 next move, since she believes her security has been compromised. “I cannot understand how the Constabulary Office is right there and people would compromise this office to do that. I brought it to the attention of the national police. In case the City Constabulary fails to do what they are supposed to do, the national police will have to do it,” Sooba said. She hinted at boosting her security personnel to dissuade further attempts to forcibly remove her from office. Meanwhile police ranks attached to the Criminal Investigations Department, (CID) of the Brickdam Police Station are conducting
investigations with regard to a separate incident involving Sooba and the media worker. Sooba is alleged to have assaulted a female Capitol News reporter. Sooba reportedly shoved the reporter as she was standing near the stairway which leads to the office. The reporter was at the time taking ‘cover shots’ of the occurrence with her smart phone, when Sooba walked up to her and
accused her of being a part of the plot to force her out of office. The reporter subsequently filed a report. The Town Clerk (ag) also received a visit from CID ranks at her office. She was invited to go down to the police station but blatantly refused. As she got on her cell phone, she told the officers that she did not need to comply with that request.

Putin and Poroshenko extend ‘difficult’ Ukraine talks one-on-one
Gaza ceasefire takes hold as focus turns to longer term
(Reuters) - The leaders of Russia and Ukraine agreed yesterday on the need to “deescalate” the conflict in eastern Ukraine but fundamental differences remain, the Belarussian president who hosted the talks said. After about six hours of negotiations with their Belarussian and Kazakhstan counterparts and top European Union officials, presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine began a one-onone meeting, officials on both sides said. The talks were aimed at defusing a separatist war that has heightened tensions between Russia and NATO and prompted the United States and EU to slap sanctions on Russia, drawing retaliation from Moscow. A U.N. report obtained by Reuters said at least 2,200 people have died in the conflict. “We all wanted a breakthrough,” President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus told reporters after the multi-lateral part of the talks had finished. “But the very fact of holding the meeting today (yesterday) is already a success, undoubtedly,” he said. “The talks were difficult. The sides’ positions differ, sometimes fundamentally... Everybody agreed on the need to de-escalate and free hostages.”
In a televised statement at the start of the talks, Putin urged Poroshenko not to step up his offensive against the pro-Moscow rebels, and threatened to slap economic penalties on Kiev for signing a trade accord with the European Union. Poroshenko replied by demanding a halt to arms shipments from Russia to the separatist fighters. The pair shook hands at the start of meeting in the Belarussian capital Minsk, only hours after Kiev said it had captured Russian soldiers on a “special mission” on Ukrainian territory. Responding to a video of the detained servicemen, a Russian defense ministry source told Russian news agencies that they had crossed the border by mistake. But Ukraine’s military spokesman dismissed that, mocking the idea that “the paratroopers got lost like Little Red Riding Hood in the forest”. The question of Russian involvement is central to the crisis, with Moscow consistently denying charges by Kiev that it has been sending weapons and fighters to help the separatists in the former Soviet republic. The United States and EU have backed Ukraine by imposing sanctions on Russia’s finance, energy and
defense sectors. Moscow has hit back by banning most Western food imports, in a trade war that threatens to tip Russia into recession and choke off economic recovery in Europe. Russia and NATO have both stepped up military exercises. “We are convinced that today, (the Ukraine crisis) cannot be solved by further escalation of the military scenario without taking into account vital interests of the southeastern regions of the country and without a peaceful dialogue with its representatives,” Putin said. He said the Russian economy could lose about 100 billion rubles ($2.8 billion) if European goods reached its markets via Ukraine after Kiev signed the trade deal with the EU in June. Moscow would retaliate with trade measures if that were to happen, Putin added. Poroshenko responded by defending a peace plan he issued in June, when the rebels in the southeast Donbass region scorned his invitation to lay down their arms and leave by a safe corridor. “The prime condition for a stabilization of the situation in Donbass is the establishment of effective control over the RussianUkrainian border. It is vital to do everything to stop deliveries of equipment and arms to the fighters,” he said.
Afghan president will not attend NATO summit next week: spokesman (Reuters) - President Hamid Karzai will not attend a key NATO summit next week because of his disagreements with Washington over Afghan security needs after most foreign troops leave his country at the end of 2014, his spokesman said on Tuesday. The Sept. 4-5 summit in Wa l e s i s m e a n t t o determine how much aid Afghan security forces will get after NATO’s combat mission ends. The alliance wants a smaller force to stay beyond 2014 to train and advise the security forces but it needs the Kabul g o v e r n m e n t ’s consent — something Karzai has refused to give. “It is because of his views and his position on the continuation of U.S. and N ATO military presence beyond 2014 (that he is not going to Wa l e s ) , ” K a r z a i ’s spokesman Aimal Faizi told Reuters.
“There is no change in that and the conditions are the same,” Faizi said, adding that Karzai had responded to the NATO invitation by saying either his successor as Afghan president or a member of the current government would attend instead. Karzai’s relationship w i t h Wa s h i n g t o n h a s soured during his final term in office and he has refused to sign a bilateral security deal with the United States allowing its troops to stay beyond this year, demanding certain conditions be met first. Those conditions include ending military operations on Afghan homes, taking steps towards making peace with the Taliban and returning Afghan inmates held at Guantanamo prison camp. Karzai’s refusal to ink the deal has fueled anxiety among Afghans about the future, as a similar pact with
N ATO c o u n t r i e s a l s o remains unsigned as a result, raising the prospect of a full pull-out of international troops by the end of this year. Afghanistan’s 350,000strong security force currently costs about $6 billion to run and is mostly funded by foreign donors. If international forces leave altogether, much of the money pledged by the donors could also follow. The candidates to succeed Karzai after J u n e ’s presidential election have both said they would sign the agreements, but they are locked in a dispute over t h e p o l l r e s ults and it could take weeks before a new president is installed. Officials in Kabul have suggested the most likely person to attend the NATO summit is the defense m i n i s t e r, but the government has not confirmed this.
(Reuters) - A ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians aimed at ending their seven-week conflict in Gaza appeared to be holding early on Wednesday as the focus shifted to securing an arrangement for the long term. No clear victor emerged from what had become a war of attrition between the Middle East’s most powerful armed forces and the dominant Hamas militant
movement in the Gaza Strip. Exacting a heavy toll in Palestinian lives and property, Israel said it dealt a strong blow to Ham a s , k i l l i n g several of its military leaders and destroying the group’s cross-border infiltration tunnels. But Israel also faced persistent rocket fire for nearly two months that caused an exodus from a number of border communities and
became part of daily life in its commercial heartland. Palestinian and Egyptian officials said the deal, which was mediated in Cairo and took effect on Tuesday evening, called for an indefinite halt to hostilities, the immediate opening of Gaza’s blockaded crossings with Israel and Egypt and a widening of the territory’s fishing zone in the Mediterranean.

Iran supplied weapons to Iraqi Kurds; Baghdad bomb kills 12 Reuters) - Iran has supplied weapons and ammunition to Iraqi Kurdish forces, Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani said yesterday at a joint press conference with Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Arbil, capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region. The direct arming of Kurdish forces is a contentious issue, because some Iraqi politicians suspect Kurdish leaders have aspirations to break away from the central government completely. The move could also be seen by some as a prelude to Iran’s taking a more direct role in broader Iraqi conflict. “We asked for weapons and Iran was the first country to provide us with weapons and ammunition,” Barzani said. Militants from the Islamic State have clashed with Kurdish peshmerga fighters in recent weeks and taken control of some areas on the periphery of Iraqi Kurdistan. Earlier in the day, a car bomb was detonated in a mainly Shi’ite district of eastern Baghdad, killing 12 people and wounding 28, police and medical sources said. The bombing in the New
Baghdad neighborhood followed a series of blasts in the Iraqi capital on Monday which killed more than 20 people. The Islamic State, which controls large swathes of northern and western Iraq, claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in the New Baghdad neighborhood on Monday. It said in a statement the attack was carried out as revenge for an attack against a Sunni mosque in Diyala on Friday which killed 68 and wounded dozens. The U.N. Human Rights Council will hold an emergency session in Geneva on Monday concerning abuses being committed by Islamic State and other militant groups in Iraq, the United Nations said on Tuesday. The 47 member states of the forum have moral authority to condemn abuses or set up international investigations into war crimes or crimes against humanity, but they cannot impose binding resolutions The Iranian foreign minister held talks with Barzani on Tuesday, one day after visiting senior Shi’ite clerics in southern Iraq. Zarif acknowledged giving military assistance to Iraqi security
forces but said the cooperation did not include deploying ground troops in the country. “We have no military presence in Iraq,” Zarif said. “We do have military cooperation with both the central government and the Kurds in different arenas.” Neither Zarif nor Barzani gave any details on whether weapons supplied to Kurdish peshmerga forces had been routed through the central government or given directly to Kurdish forces. Prime Minister-designate Haider alAbadi said Monday that arms given to the peshmerga had been routed through the central government. Britain, France, Germany and Italy have also promised to send military assistance to Kurdish security forces to fight the Islamic State. The United States has carried out a series of air strikes against the Islamic State fighters in northern Iraq in the past two weeks, partly to protect the Kurdish region from being overrun. Zarif denied that Iran and the United States were discussing Iraq as part of talks between Iran and Western powers about Iran’s nuclear program
Experimental U.S. hypersonic weapon destroyed seconds after launch (Reuters) - A hypersonic weapon being developed by the U.S. military was destroyed four seconds after its launch from a test range in Alaska early on Monday after controllers detected a problem with the system, the Pentagon said. The weapon is part of a program to create a missile that will destroy targets anywhere on Earth within an hour of getting data and permission to launch. The mission was aborted to ensure public
safety, and no one was injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m. EDT at the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska, said Maureen Schumann, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Defense Department. “We had to terminate,” Schumann said. “The weapon exploded during takeoff and fell back down in the range complex,” she added. The incident caused an undetermined amount of damage to the launch facility,
Schumann said. It was a setback for the U.S. program, which some analysts see as countering the growing development of ballistic missiles by Iran and North Korea but others say is part of an arms race with China, which tested a hypersonic system in January. Riki Ellison, founder of the nonprofit Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, said he did not t h i n k M o n d a y ’s f a i l u r e would lead to the program’s termination.

St Lucia claims success in arbitration with US oil company CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC) — The St Lucia Government says it has won the latest round of ongoing arbitration with the US-based oil and gas exploration and production company, RSM Production Corporation. A statement yesterday from the office of Prime Minister Kenny Anthony stated that on August 13 t h e A r b i t r a l Tr i b u n a l ordered RSM to post a guarantee of US$750,000 to ensure that it will pay St Lucia’s legal costs if it is ordered to do so at the end of the case. “ T h i s i s St L u c i a ’s second major success following the tribunal’s order on December 12, 2013, for RSM to pay all of the advances towards the administrative costs of the arbitration, which in all previous known cases have been paid 50 per cent by each party. “Both of these orders are the first of their kinds in the history of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), which is administering the arbitration. The three arbitrators are independent of ICSID but are deciding the case under the ICSID Arbitration Rules, which are designed for disputes between host states and foreign investors. The Government is pleased to have achieved these unique successes,” the statement from the Office of the Prime Minister added. The Colorado-based RSM Production Corporation, owned by USbased oil magnate, Jack Grynberg, had initiated the arbitration for breach of a multimillion dollar contract. The company took the action against the St Lucia Government in respect of the exploration licence
Dr Kenny Anthony, Prime Minsiter of St Lucia which it was granted several years ago to undertake exploration for oil over a specified area of water offshore of the coast of St Lucia. The main opposition U n i t e d Wo r k e r s P a r t y (UWP) claimed that the Government had announced in May 2012 that Grynberg had filed a US$500 million claim against St Lucia. The statement from the Office of the Prime Minister noted that RSM must now post security because of the concern that, if the tribunal later
orders RSM to reimburse St Lucia, RSM will fail to do so. “The tribunal’s order summarises the parties’ claims and defences, saying that the case arises from an offshore petroleum exploration contract. The tribunal noted that, “ a c c o r d i n g t o ( R S M ’s ) position, boundary disputes developed, affecting the exploration area, in particular in relation to Martinique, Barbados and St Vincent, which allegedly prevented (RSM) from initiating exploration”. RSM also claimed that former prime minister Stephenson King signed a three-year extension to the contract but then retrieved the document before it could be delivered to RSM. RSM claimed that the extension is valid, even though RSM never received it. RSM has asked the tribunal to declare that the exploration contract is still in full force and effect. I n r e p l y, St L u c i a maintained that the agreement “has expired or is at least not enforceable and therefore Saint Lucia has no obligation (to RSM)”.

Hurricane Cristobal causes four deaths, churns towards Bermuda
MIAMI, Florida (AFP) — Strengthening Hurricane Cristobal killed at least four people in the Caribbean and then trained its deadly sights Tuesday on the holiday paradise of Bermuda, officials and meteorologists said. The storm dumped torrential rain on the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands and Dominican Republic, triggering flooding and killing four people, authorities there said.Cristobal was packing maximum sustained winds of
75 miles (120 kilometres) per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said in its latest forecast, at 2100 GMT. It was moving north towards Bermuda at 10 miles per hour, the NHC said, warning its impact was also being felt in the United States. “The centre of Cristobal is expected to pass northwest of Bermuda on Wednesday and Wednesday night,” the NHC said. It added: “Swells
generated by Cristobal are affecting portions of the United States coast from central Florida northward to North Carolina and will spread northwards later this week.” A tropical storm watch was already in effect for Bermuda, forecasters said, meaning inclement conditions were possible in the next 24 hours. Cristobal, a category one hurricane, is the third hurricane of the Atlantic storm season.
Ex-Muslim detainees plea: Release our passports A group of citizens who is seeking to visit Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, wants the Trinidadian government to intervene to recover passports and other official documents from Venezuelan authorities. Speaking to the T&T Guardian yesterday, Imam Hamzah Mohammed, one of the three imans who
was released from Venezuelan custody in June, said the group had been promised by the Government to assist it in getting back the passports. Mohammed was detained last March in Venezuela with 15 other nationals, including women and children. Five men remain in custody. A hearing before a Venezuelan tribunal is scheduled for
September 2. The group of 15 had gone to Caracas to get visas to visit Saudi Arabia. ”When we were released in June, we were promised by the government, who said the original documents —our passports, marriage certificates and birth certificates—were properties of the Government of T&T and that they would help us to get them back.”

Bouchard cruises at U.S. Open, Aussies stay perfect NEW YORK (Reuters) Powerful Canadian upstart Eugenie Bouchard launched her U.S. Open campaign with a bang, blasting by Olga Govortsova of Belarus in under an hour on Tuesday to sprint into the second round. The 20-year-old, pigtailed Bouchard, the only woman to reach the semi-finals of the year’s first three majors, eradicated questions about her hard court form with an overwhelming 6-2 6-1 win on a sunny day at Flushing Meadows. Seventh-seeded Bouchard, who won only one match in three events since losing to Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final last month, ripped 19 winners and forced 24 errors from an outclassed
Did you know? With the CONCACAF Gold Cup football Regional tournament imminent, Statistician and regular contributor to Kaieteur Sport, Charwayne Walker, attempts to joggle the minds of sports enthusiasts in relation to Guyana’s history in the regional game over the years. This short series entitled ‘Did you know?’ starts today with interesting facts on one of our leading footballers, Deon Barnwell. Did you know that Deon Barnwell, former Guyana International, scored nine Senior International goals before his nineteenth birthday? This feat is probably unmatched in Regional Football. Barnwell, born on March 28, 1969, scored his first International goal against French Guiana at Camp Ayanganna at 16 years plus. Guyana won that international friendly two goals to one. In the series finale, Barnwell was on target again as the Land of Many Waters earned a hard fought draw. His third and fourth goals came in January 1987 when Guyana defeated the Bahamas 3-1 in Nassau in an Olympic Qualifier. Goals five and six silenced a capacity Mindoo Phillip Park in Castries where Guyana humbled St. Lucia 3-1 in an international friendly, January 1987. Goals seven and eight earned the Land Of Many Waters a two all drawn against Barbados at the National Stadium in Bridgetown, February 1987. Goal number nine helped Guyana humble Grenada 3Nil at the Mackenzie Sports Club, August 1987. Deon was 18 years 4 months then.
Govortsova. Bouchard, whose combination of skill and beauty landed her on the cover of Sunday’s New York Times magazine, was joined in the second round by eighth-seeded former world number one Ana Ivanovic and 2011 champion Sam Stosur. On the men’s side, 10th seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, 13th-seeded American John Isner and 25th seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia were among first-round winners. Nishikori dismissed American wild card Wayne Odesnik 6-2 6-4 6-2, Isner ousted compatriot Marcos Giron 7-6 (5) 2-6 7-6 (2) and Karlovic eliminated Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in four sets. Sam Querrey gave local fans another cause to cheer with a 6-2 4-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina. The day session served as an appetizer to a hotly anticipated night program featuring 17-times grand slam winner Roger Federer and two-time defending champion Serena Williams. AUSTRALIAN SURGE Former champion Sam
Stosur carried her recent momentum into New York with a first-round victory that extended a perfect record for Australians so far. Stosur pushed past 49th-ranked American Lauren Davis 6-1 64 to put behind her a shock, first-round ouster at Flushing Meadows last year to American qualifier Victoria Duval. The victory by 21stranked Stosur, only the third player to beat Serena Williams in a grand slam final, made it five-for-five for players from Australia in the opening round. Stosur joined 32ndranked Casey Dellacqua and Anastasia Rodionova (221), and men’s players Nick Kyrgios (60) and Matthew Ebden (94) into the second round. Ivanovic showed off her self-assured hard court form with a 6-3 6-0 rout of American Alison Riske, who had lost to the Serb 7-5 7-6 this year in New Zealand. “It was very tough first-round match. We had a tough one in Auckland,” said Ivanovic, who has wins over Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in battling back into the world top 10.

Wolf’s Warriors overcame Regal by 41 runs while Regal Masters got the better of Parika Defenders by 72 runs in front of a sizeable crowd. Courageous batting by Safraz Karim, Azaad Azeez and skipper Amrit Rai guided Wolf ’s Warriors to a challenging 146 all out off their allocated 15 overs, batting first. Karim and Azeez came together after their team lost their first wicket without a run on the board and added 94 for the second wicket. Karim slammed two fours and five sixes, while Azeez cracked one four and five sixes. Following their departure Regal bowlers maintained a tidy line and picked up wickets at regular intervals. However Amrit Rai beefed up the total with 25 (1x4,2x6). Troy Kippins grabbed 3-29 off three overs.
Regal were reduced to 9-2 in reply, but Patrick Rooplall and Chien Gittens tried to repair the damage with a third wicket stand of 21 before Gittens went for 10. Rooplall who top scored with 46 (5x6), put together 25 and 27 for their fourth and fifth wicket with Ricky Sargeant (12) and Safraz Esau (06) respectively. However, Regal batsmen allowed too many dot balls and their failure to rotate the strike added to the pressure as they were restricted for 105-8 in 15 overs. Diaram Persaud snared 2-15 and Khaimraj Ramsundar 2-17. In the over-40 division, Regal Masters gave their supporters much to cheer about with a comfortable victory. Tony Ameerally struck three fours in scoring an attractive 38 while Mahendra Arjune chipped in with 16. Mohamed Safie picked up 3-25, Shafeek Ali 221 and Diaram Rajkumar 2-35. Regal bowlers never allowed Parika Defenders to

Lewis Hamilton says there will be no retaliation BBC Sport - Lewis Hamilton has promised not to retaliate against team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Italian Grand Prix. The German driver will not face disciplinary action from Formula 1 governing body the FIA over his crash with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton claimed Rosberg admitted in a team meeting to causing the incident on the second lap at the Belgian Grand Prix “on purpose”. Rosberg has disputed that but the FIA will not get involved in the situation. Now Hamilton, 29, has said: “I will always put the team first and I won’t take anything into my own hands. “The weekend was
damaging. I don’t know how I’m going to get back those 29 points, but what I do know is I’ve a great group of people behind me. “The poor guys on my side of the garage have had quite a lot of bad races.” Hamilton said he would “have to make sure we’re not racing wheel-to-wheel” to try and avoid any potential further conflict with championship leader Rosberg. An FIA spokesman told BBC Sport: “The FIA will not intervene in this issue. “Only a ‘new element’ that would have appeared after the results became final could justify us opening an investigation. “A comment alleged to have been made in an internal
briefing and later denied by the team itself does not constitute such a ‘new element’.” Hamilton suffered a puncture on lap two at Spa after a collision with Rosberg and failed to finish Sunday’s race. The German went on to finish second, extending his lead in the championship to 29 points with seven races remaining. Hamilton said he was “gobsmacked” that Rosberg suggested he had crashed into him on purpose. Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has said the team will let the situation cool down before deciding whether to take any action. The pair will race again at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on 7 September.
GABF suspends referees, coaches for IGG participation

The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has suspended several basketball officials, including coaches and referees for their participation in the ‘unsanctioned’ Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) that Guyana hosted earlier this month. The National Sports Commission (NSC) opted to use Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) ahead of the GABF, which is the governing body for basketball in Guyana, to select the national teams for IGG in usurpation of the role of the national federation. As a result, the GABF called the team selected by Director of Sport, Neil Kumar’s team and not
the national team, since it was not a GABF-sanctioned unit. The GABF had also warned that penalties will be imposed for officials and players who defectively participate as part of the ‘unsanctioned’ basketball team. The suspensions come on the heels of widespread benching of senior national players for mass indiscipline at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in the British Virgin Islands last month. Below is the content of the GABF release: “Dear All, Please note that the following persons have been
suspended with immediate effect from GABF sanctioned activates, including the activities of its affiliates until further notice due to their participation in 2014 IGG Games: Aubrey Young; Rawle Toney; Mark Trim; Willon Cameron; Leona Kyte; Warren Wilson and Ann Gordon. Please note that we are in the process of scheduling a GABF General Council Meeting for either September 20th or 21st where pronouncements on the above suspensions will be finalised. We appreciate your cooperation. Nigel Hinds President GABF”

Foo slams 67, Johnson grabs 4-39 A fine 67 from Guyana T20 player Jonathan Foo, a four wicket haul (4-39) from National pacer Raun Johnson and good all round performance by out of form Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine were the highlights of the first BCB Senior Trials yesterday at Albion. The three trials games are being used to select the Berbice One-Day team for the upcoming Inter County Cricket tournament which is scheduled to commence next week Thursday. Deonarine’s X1 won the toss and elected to take first strike. They started poorly losing Rafael Estriado and former National youth batsman Seon Hetmyer, the elder brother of West Indies U-19 batsmen Shemron Hetmyer who will play for the victorious Guyana youth side in the Inter-County tournament . The 31 year-old Deonarine, who last played a
Test match against New Zealand last year December and Foo, who was part of the team that represented Guyana at the 2010 Champions League t20 tournament in South Africa, combined to take their team out of trouble with the highest partnership of the match to help their team post a formidable total of 212 all out in 47 overs. Foo was assisted by Deonarine with 40. Assad Fudadin X1 batted poorly in their reply finishing on 157 all out. Only Gudakesh Moti (30) and Jason Sinclair (27) offered some resistance. Deonarine returned to take 221 and Krishendat Ramoo 219. The second and third trial matches will be played today and tomorrow respectively at the same venue from 09.00hrs. Good showing by Police Martial Artists
Superintendent Williams (extreme R) joins his subordinates to display their winnings in the just concluded martial arts tournament.
The motto of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is to serve and protect and the first picture one might gather is the officer with a gun strapped to his waist in pursuit of his/her mandate. That may be so but several officers of the GPF have shown that they are quite capable of addressing their mandates devoid of firepower force when they turned in credible performances at the Pan American Martial Arts Games (PAMAG) at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Saturday afternoon last. The ranks that represented the GPF
were outstanding in several categories and Sensei Troy Bobb excelled in the Over 35 Kata, while Paul Ignatius placed first in 18-34 years category in self defence and kata. Constable 22377 Keston Peters placed 1st in self defence while his c o l l e a g u e W. 2 2 5 1 0 McDonald excelled in sparring. Other outstanding officers were Sensei Ignatius (weapons), Constables 22380 Simon (self defence), 22499 W. Thomas (sparring) and 22524 Hercules (sparring), all finishing in 2nd places while 3rd position was earned by Constable 22498 Thomas. A release from the GPF informed that they are extremely proud of the performances of the ranks. The release further stated that those ranks will be given full support in their quest of advancing to the professional level. Meanwhile, GPF Training Officer, Senior
Superintendent Paul Williams, Sensei Troy Bobb, Paul Ignatius and Annand Mahadeo said that they are very proud of the magnificent performance of the recruits, all from the Felix Austin Police College, on their martial arts debut. Officer Williams is credited with the reintroduction of self defence which was dormant in the Force for almost three decades. Officer Williams noted that he had not effected changes all by himself. He also said that his efforts were supported by those of the administration. In related developments, Superintendent Williams was also lauded for his input in the formation of the Guyana Police Force Rugby Club and was duly elected President. The club, which consists of both men and women teams, is registered with, and affiliated to, the Guyana National Rugby Union. Members are currently training in preparation for competition.

GCB developmental programme reaches Linden ...donates money and cricket equipment The Mining town of Linden has benefitted from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) developmental outreached programme last Sunday when several members of the Board made two donations to the district at the Bayrock Community Centre ground after a meeting with representatives of East Bank Demerara Cricket Association and Upper Demerara Cricket Committee. The GCB handed over $250,000 to the Bayrock club and a similar amount to the Regional Authority as well as six bats and five boxes of balls for the development of the game in the area. Speaking at the meeting which included Territorial Developmental Officer Colin Stuart, Regional Chairman Sharma Solomon, President of the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association Rohan Sarjoo and President of the Upper

Djokovic, Sharapova sparkle after others toil NEW YORK (Reuters) Former champions Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova sparkled under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights to end a steamy first day that proved more than a little stressful for several of the U.S. Open favorites on Monday. Djokovic, who had won only two matches in the hard court run-up to the season’s final grand slam after getting married just days after his Wimbledon triumph, was back to his best once the center court spotlight shone on him at Flushing Meadows. The 2011 champion treated his first-round match against unseeded 22-year-old Argentine Diego Schwartzman like a breezy workout, dominating in all phases with 24 winners including seven aces in a 6-1 6-2 6-4 rout. His fast work followed a scintillating finish by French Open champion and 2006 winner Sharapova, as the fifth seed won 10 straight games to prevail 6-4 6-0 after falling 24 behind against her Russian compatriot and old friend Maria Kirilenko. Despite the night program starting one hour later than scheduled due to ceremonies featuring bands, speeches and fireworks, Djokovic enabled
the New York night crowd to head to the exits shortly before the stroke of midnight. “I’m very pleased,” the Serbian world number one said in a courtside interview after his 97-minute win. “It’s never easy to start a U.S. Open smoothly.” Several of the favorites at Flushing Meadows could attest to his opinion. Busy bees made life difficult for two grizzled veterans and a pair of favorites were forced to work overtime on a hot, steamy day at the U.S. National Tennis Center that drew a combined 57,000 fans to the day and night sessions. Eighth-seeded 2012 champion Andy Murray fought off cramps to beat Dutchman Robin Haase in four painful sets, while w o m e n ’s s e c o n d s e e d Simona Halep lost an early tiebreak to U.S. debutant Danielle Collins before claiming victory. And in an intriguing match-up of 19th seed Venus Williams and Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan, the oldest players in the women’s draw, some pesky bees joined in and refused to leave them alone. MAJOR CRAMPING Murray appeared on course for an easy victory before he fell victim to cramps that left him stretching and straining
to get comfortable before clinching a 6-3 7-6 (6) 1-6 75 victory over Haase. “I felt extremely good before the match, and I did train very, very hard to get ready for the tournament,” said Murray, one of the fittest players on the ATP Tour. “My quads were cramping, then it started to get to my lats, then my forearms,” he added. “I just tried to hang around and at the end I was trying to play without moving my legs much and managed to get through.” Murray said he might consult with a nutritionist before meeting his second-round opponent, G e r m a n y ’s M a t t h i a s Bachinger. A less serious intrusion hit the irresistible women’s clash between seven-times grand slam singles winner Wi l l i a m s a n d J a p a n ’s remarkable Date-Krumm, who were beset by bees. First the 43-year-old Japanese player and later 34-year-old Williams dipped, ducked and danced away before ballgirls helped usher the stubborn swarm away from the baseline. When finally left to play tennis on a sun-bathed Arthur Ashe Stadium court, Williams stung her opponent 2-6 6-3 6-3 to advance. Asked about who presented the
Maria Sharapova (Reuters)
peskier test in the two-hour match, two-time U.S. Open winner Williams said: “The bee was a challenge but easily the answer is Kimiko.” EARLY UPSET In an upset on the men’s side, twice U.S. Open semifinalist Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, the 21st seed, fell to big-serving Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios 7-5 76 (4) 2-6 7-6 (1). The 19year-old Kyrgios, who made a Wimbledon splash by ousting Rafa Nadal in the fourth round to reach the quarter-finals, blasted 26 aces. The 60th-ranked Kyrgios moved on to a second-round match against Italy’s Andreas Seppi.
Advancing with relative ease in straight sets were Australian Open champion S t a n Wa w r i n k a o f Switzerland and fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, a Wimbledon semi-finalist. The Swiss third seed beat Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic to set up a secondround test against Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, while bigserving Raonic defeated Japan’s Taro Daniel to get to the next round against Peter Gojowczyk of Germany. Halep survived a scare in the tournament’s first match on stadium court before overtaking Collins 6-7 (2) 6-1 6-2. The 22-year-old Romanian, a French Open
finalist, admitted to a bout of nerves in being thrust onto the big stage as the opening act of the season’s last grand slam. “She played a tough match, I want to congratulate her,” Halep said of her 20year-old opponent, She moves on to face Slovakian Jana Cepelova, a 2-6 7-5 6-1 winner over Spain’s MariaTeresa Torro-Flor, in the second round of the season’s last grand slam. Also advancing on the women’s side were fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, sixth seed Angelique Kerber of Germany, and former world number one Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, the ninth seed.
