T&T prison boss breaks silence on jailbreak…

Rogue officers need to be weeded out

Sterling Stewart PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – With three prison officers now under suspension pending investigations into their suspected involvement in last month’s prison break, the Commissioner of Prisons says the service needs a cleanup to get rid of dirty officers. Sterling Stewart made his position clear Wednesday as he confirmed that “administrative action” had been taken against three officers who were assigned to the Port of Spain Prison, where the jailbreak occurred on July 24. “This is part of a thorough investigation, incorporating all available intelligence and resources to not only bring closure, but also to address all the concerns being presented to us. At this stage of the investigation, we are yet to

determine the means by which these destructive items entered into the prisons,” Stewart said in a statement Wednesday. “What is manifestly clear, however, is that they were not brought in by ghosts but by treacherous individuals working together on this sinister escape plan. It has been mandated that the investigation be done thoroughly, but swiftly, with a clear message being sent to all that the nefarious, underhand dealings of negative elements shall not be tolerated.” Stewart said the recent events had made it blatantly clear there were rogue elements in the prisons system wreaking havoc. “A cleanup exercise must be fashioned into our resolve as we seek to rid the prison service of these cancerous rudiments that have been flourishing while endangering

the lives of others. This type of treacherous behaviour will never be tolerated,” he asserted. The prison chief further contended that the lives of the prison officers under his command, law enforcement officials and members of the public were placed in “grave danger” when the trio escaped custody and “we can no longer have confidence in mere human resources”. “The time has come for us to have access to and use of all the technology available to us, and all that can be obtained,” he said. “The Minister of Justice has advised that measures are being in put in place for the procurement and implementation of CCTV systems, full body and hand held scanners in the shortest possible time. These we anxiously await, as they will undoubtedly improve our static security competencies and overall outputs.” While sending a stern warning to rogue officers, Stewart encourage committed prison offers to continue to work hard so the service could “reclaim our prisons and bring justice to those who seek only to destroy and cast a dark shadow over us” Stewart also sought to reassure the public that the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service was unwavering in its commitment to protect society.

Security beefed up for T&T Opposition leader PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) yesterday refused comment on whether or not security had been beefed up for Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley in the run-up to the September 7 general election here. Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams said he would not “confirm or deny” the report of the increased security that one newspaper said was based on “intelligence” that a “serious” threat” had been made on the life of Rowley, who is leading the main Opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) into the election. “I would not comment on any matter which should not be in the public domain,” Williams told reporters. The Trinidad Express

newspaper reported yesterday that the security forces were alerted to the threat following the jailbreak from the Port of Spain prison two weeks ago that resulted in the death of a policeman. Two of the three prisoners who escaped were killed in separate incidents, while the third surrendered to police and has since been charged with murder as well as escaping lawful custody. The newspaper reported that following a public meeting of the PNM in Diego Martin, west of here on Tuesday night, “the Opposition leader noticeably did not engage in the normal crowd-mixing activity which has become customary after such public meetings”. The paper said that while State security is involved in the beefed-up arrangements “in a major way”, Rowley has

brought in a layer of private security as well. Rowley himself has declined to comment on the increased security saying “it is in the hands of the specialists in the public and the private sector. I will not comment further on the details of any of these arrangements”. Asked whether he had been made aware of the threat to his life, Rowley said: “I will not comment any further on that”. Rowley, who has been provided with security by the State since February 2014, has received two death threats since becoming Opposition leader. In 2011, Rowley reported to police that he had received threatening letters and a year later, then-national security minister Jack Warner revealed police were investigating a “threat against Rowley’s life”.

Officials exit Haiti govt. over president’s remarks to woman PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A hostile comment made by Haitian President Michel Martelly at a campaign rally has set off an uproar in his coalition government, leading a politically allied party to announce the resignation of three officials from his administration Wednesday. The leader of the Fusion Social Democrats told reporters that two Cabinet ministers and a secretary of state will leave Martelly’s government due to the president’s comments to a woman in the port city of

Miragoane.“This is inappropriate. Enough is enough,” Edmonde Supplice Beauzile said at a news conference announcing his party’s vote to remove its three officials, which include the minister of women’s affairs. Martelly was at a rally July 29 when a woman accused his government of incompetence and complained that it failed to bring electricity to her community. Video broadcast by Haitian media show the president dismissing her with coarse, sexist language, telling her in Haitian Creole to “go get a man and go

in the bushes” to have sex. Many in the crowd at the nighttime rally erupted in cheers and laughs at his remarks. A presidential spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Loss of the three officials from a core part of the coalition is unlikely to affect the outgoing president’s ability to govern. Martelly, who took office in May 2011, is in the final year of a fiveyear term. He has been governing without a legislature since January because the terms of lawmakers expired before new elections could be held.

‘No money no vote’ Trinidad Express Minutes after Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan opened a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art Nephrology (kidney) Unit at the Port of Spain General Hospital Wednesday, he was greeted by vociferous employees who demanded outstanding monies be paid to them before September 7. Among those present at the function to open the unit were North-West Regional Health Authority personnel, including chief executive officer Judith Balliram, chairman Dr Andy Bhagwandass, and head of the Nephrology Unit Dr Emille Mohammed. Earlier on, Khan cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque to declare the centre open. Both Khan and Bhagwandass acknowledged citi-zens were in dire need of dialysis and each year about 450 new people seek the treatment. During his feature address, Khan joked: “You know you are doing something right when you have all the PSA (Public Services Association) members outside applauding you. Not only are they applauding you, they have chosen to prevent obesity in

this country by moving around and decreasing the obesity.” After Khan began touring the facility and had made his way to an area designated for HIV patients, he walked into the corridor. Upon spotting him, the chants of “We want we money” increased significantly. Khan surveyed the scene on the stairs. A few people said he ensured he had paid doctors since he belonged to the fraternity. He, however, did not respond to the small group of protesters who had the energy of a Jouvert band. Khan continued walking and the protesters, including wardsmen, attendants and semi-skilled personnel, followed him. They kept chanting: “We want we money. Come and say something.” He didn’t budge. Khan left the unit area and made his way to the Operating Theatre and Surgical Department. Again, he was caught in a phalanx of photo-graphers and a crush of reporters. At the Surgical Department, he listened to employees’ complaints about mould, non-functioning equipment and the need for colder temperatures.

Then as Khan attempted to board his vehicle, the protesters moved closer, shouting: “No money, No vote.” A ministry communications officer said, “It (salaries) are not in Dr Khan’s hands. It is under the directive of the CPO (Stephanie Lewis). The minister has met with them his hands are tied and he cannot do anything. The CPO has to sign off on it.” After leaving the hospital, Khan, in a telephone interview, said: “From what I understand, the CPO was given the approval and unofficially by the end of the week, I will get the correspondence.” When the media approached the protesters for a comment, one said, “We are letting our president (Duke) do the talking.” A wardsmaid and mother of seven said: “It is unfair the ministry’s perks are higher than ours. Khan does not care about us. I am taking care of my sick sister. She is occupying my bedroom. We are supposed to get between $700 to our pay. The backpay should be about $37,000. I want my money.”

THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS HELP Banks have measures they take to prevent a run on their deposits. Some of these measures are intended to prevent persons from withdrawing large amounts all at the same time, because if this happens it causes a collapse of the entire banking system. This past week, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) urged the Granger administration not to proceed with the withdrawal of what the PSC says is some $60B from the commercial banking sector. Even if the PSC has its numbers wrong, even a $10B withdrawal is going to present problems for the banks. The PSC is offering sound advice to the government. It is saying to them to stop this wildness that it is engaged in, and start to think seriously about Guyana’s economy and what is happening to it at the moment. The problem that the government faces is that it does not know and does not have the analytical skills to determine why since the May 11 elections, business has slowed down tremendously. The government should seek to understand what is taking place.

There is no shame in admitting that you do not have the capacity to determine what is happening with the economy. Not even the PSC itself seems to know the answer, so there is no shame or disgrace in the government seeking international help in trying to unravel the problems with the economy at the moment, and particularly the slowdown in business. But even if the government does not have the ability to offer a full explanation as to why there is a downturn, it can look at some proxy measures to verify that indeed there is a problem with the economy. The first thing that it can look at is the exchange rate. There should have been an appreciation of the Guyana

dollar as a result of the elections. The opposite happened. The value of the dollar depreciated. So much for people having confidence in the new government! The fact that the dollar has not improved under a new government that claims to be committed to transparency and accountability means that the market is not reacting to the political signals of the government. The second measure that the government should examine is the movement of commercial credit. The growth in commercial loan borrowing was one of the main factors that spurred financial sector growth over the past few years. If this has either peaked or has declined, then this is

likely to be one of the reasons for the depressed business environment. This is all the more reason why the advice that is being offered by the PSC should be heeded. If you take out, at one time, billions of dollars out of the commercial banking system, this will represent a run on deposits, whichever way you want to l o o k a t i t . The banking system cannot survive such a large run on its deposits, and it is going to collapse, plain and simple. If the banking system collapses, people are going to starve in Guyana, because the country is going to return to those days when the shelves were empty of basic commodities. The government has no

justifiable reason to be moving monies held by statutory bodies, such as Commissions, corporations and semi- autonomous agencies, and placing these under the Consolidated Fund. Central government has no claim to these funds, other than that which is agreed by these agencies to pay to Central Government as dividends or as transfers. These funds belong to the agencies themselves and cannot be simply appropriated by Central Government. Somebody should challenge the right of Central Government to move these funds into the Consolidated Fund. It is not for the parliament to vote on the use of these

Funds. It is for the agencies themselves who have to decide on the use of these funds, and who may be holding these funds as reserves as well as for future capital works. Somebody needs to challenge the government’s decision to move these funds to the Consolidated Fund. Somebody also needs to sit down with the Ministry of Finance and advise it that it will be on an ill-fated course if it withdraws billions out of the financial sector at one time.

== THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN ==

The bright lights tell what a foolish nation Guyana is On Wednesday evening at around 7 p.m., on my way home, I turned into the Giftland OfficeMax complex to buy a photo album. The street from the Railway Embankment into Giftland is a very long road. It has about twenty street lamps that are very bright. I would say that street that leads from the highway to the mall is the most brightly lit roadway in this entire country. On my way in, all the cars coming out had their high beams on. When I was leaving, I saw only one car with its normal lights. If you drive on that road in the night, there is absolutely no need to switch on your high beams. High beams blind oncoming

motorists. The ignorance and stupidity were so appalling that you were ashamed to be part of a country that is so un-modern. There is no need for motorists to use their high beams on that road to Giftland. It makes no sense to use them because the pathway is illuminatingly clear because of the twenty street lamps. So much of what are civilized, sensible values have been lost to the people of this land. I honestly believe that ninety-nine percent of vehicle-owners haven’t a clue as to when their high beams are to be used and the purpose of so doing. What is horribly shocking, almost tragic is

when you see who the fools are. They are people who are educated, have been educated in developed counties, and have lived in modern territories. Yet these people behave as humans who don’t have a sense of what is a modern way of behaving. Do you know in many European cities, the high beams are not permitted and traffic patrols would approach motorists and tell them to turn off their bright lights? Is this country really doomed? When you see how people behave you wonder if this nation will not be forever a lost land. I saw the stupid use of those excessive watts on the same day when the country was talking about the controversy where the City Constabulary fired three employees for being pregnant. Surely if the regulations said they couldn’t be pregnant within two years of their tenure then the person who signed the dismissal letter ought to be dismissed too for being a victim of Guyana’s backwardness. You want to see how unacceptable this country is in a modern world in the 21st

century, go to any court of law, whether in the magisterial or High Court level. A policeman, probably without the required five CXCs inclusive of Maths and English, is the sole judge of sartorial wear and aesthetic colours. I accompanied Gordon April, one of my security detail during the 2015 election campaign, to the magistrate court for a landlord/tenant case. The 18-year-old policeman at the door told April that he could not enter unless he put his shirt into his trousers. April told him the design was meant to be worn outside of the pants. Any schoolboy could have seen that the shirt was of that type. A policeman in the High Court was walking behind Leonard Craig of the AFC, all over the court, insisting that Craig put his shirt into his pants. Craig was wearing an

Asian-type shirt-jac that the policeman never saw in his life and couldn’t understand that it was meant to be worn outside of the trousers. Policemen and policewomen who cannot even spell some of the names in nature’s colour scheme arbitrarily decide what a loud colour is. I saw a woman in tears in the High Court after a policeman told her she cannot enter the courtroom. The woman had a case in front of the judge. You cannot seek redress from the judges. They say that is the jurisdiction of the Registrar. I went to see the Registrar to assist the woman. That man is never there. I counted eleven times I went to see him over the asininity of the colour scheme. He wasn’t in office. The administrators of the courts cannot stop the presence of sewage in the High Court

Frederick Kissoon compound that has been flowing non-stop since 1973, but are fixated on what people wear. Out of the hundreds of professions in this country, only people at the senior level who work in five of these professions are allowed to sign your UG pension form and your NIS pension form. The list excludes journalism, law, engineering, the military, nursing, business, computer experts, academics. Only five! Isn’t that a monumental act of asininity?

Dem boys seh...

Insel Air plane grounded after refusing to take back illegal Indians Immigration clash with airline staffers...

No Man’s Land! The Indian nationals sitting on the tarmac of the CJIA yesterday, after being refused as passengers on an Insel Air flight. An outgoing Insel Air flight, 81-791, to Aruba and other connecting destinations, was yesterday cancelled and the plane grounded after the pilot refused to transport eight

Indian nationals who were refused entry to Guyana since July 19. Kaieteur News was told that Immigration Officers ordered Insel Air officials to take the men out of the

jurisdiction yesterday morning but the pilot refused, claiming that the flight was filled. The men had arrived in Guyana on an Insel Air flight on one-way tickets and

Victim, associates surrounded robbery suspect’s house - Detained friends tell cops

Dead: Akeem Yorrick Three associates of shooting victim Akeem Yorrick have told police that he was with them when they surrounded the home of a Sparendaam Squatting Area resident they had accused of robbery. Police have detained the

men, who claimed that the robbery suspect, who is still to be apprehended, shot Yorrick before escaping. Kaieteur News understands that police have checked the men for traces of gunpowder residue, since the girlfriend of the suspect alleged that Yorrick and his associates were all armed. Relatives had alleged that Yorrick, 23, of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was heading to his girlfriend’s home, at around 22.00 hrs on Wednesday, when he was shot. They had suggested that he was merely “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” It is alleged that on Sunday, the alleged shooter had robbed one of Yorrick’s associates of money and jewellery. The matter was reported to the police, but the

suspect was not arrested. On Wednesday night, the robbery victim and some of his friends, including Yorrick, went to the suspect’s home. They reportedly surrounded the residence, since they expected the man to run to the back when he saw them. Yorrick was reportedly stationed at the back of the residence. The suspect was reportedly sitting in his yard with his girlfriend when the ‘vigilantes’ a p p r o a c h e d . Yorrick’s detained associates claimed that on seeing them, the man fled to the back on the yard and shot Yorrick before escaping. Yorrick was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital with a bullet wound to the stomach. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

without visas. Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, told this newspaper yesterday that a plane containing the Indian Nationals landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on July 19 and for some obvious reasons, they were detained by immigration officials at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. According to the Minister, the reasons include the absence of visas and the fact that they were travelling on one-way tickets. Also, the men could not show evidence of how they would have been able to sustain themselves during their stay in the country. “According to international travel policy, airlines accepting passengers to visit a foreign country are supposed to ensure they have a valid passport... visa if necessary, and a two-way ticket,” Minister Felix explained. He added that after they were refused entry, the men were kept in custody of the Guyana Police Force. Felix revealed that local

citizens had made representations for the Indian nationals to be released, but the administration refused to take that course. He maintained that it was the airline that was responsible for the men’s return to their originating destination. “They brought them here without the proper legal requirements; we should not be straddled with the responsibility of keeping them,” Felix told this newspaper. Local authorities then took the decision to have the men placed on an Insel Air departing flight since they had no legal standing in Guyana. Yesterday, as the men were about to board the aircraft, the crew refused to let them on the plane. This led to a standoff , with local immigration maintain their position that the airline take the men back to where they had brought them from. Eventually a decision was made for the flight to be cancelled as the airline also refused to budge. As a result, several other passengers who were

scheduled to depart on the aircraft were left stranded. The Cheddi Jagan International Airport in a statement late yesterday afternoon, confirmed that the Central Immigration Office at Timehri had grounded the carrier, which was scheduled to depart at 06:45 hrs. “According to reports, the aircraft was not permitted to depart CJIA until arrangements were made to transport the Indian nationals out of the jurisdiction. These nationals arrived in Guyana on July 19, 2015, but were refused entry into the country for various immigration reasons and have been in the custody of the Guyana Police Force since then.” CJIA said it is investigating the incident and regrets any inconvenience caused to passengers booked on the flight. Carpenter charged with Overhaul of GO-Invest commences in earnest assaulting children’s mother The country’s specialist agency tasked with overlooking investments should be free of political interference. Speaking on the future of the Guyana Office For Investment (GO-Invest), Minister of Business and Investment, Dominic Gaskin, says he was disappointed that the entity failed in its mandate. However, he is of the view that the new Board of Directors may be able to turn this situation around. He has been named the Chairman to head seven members. The members include Rajendra Singh, Michael Hutson, Neville Totaram, Patricia Bacchus, Professor Shamir Ally, Basil Blackman, and a still-to-be named representative of the Parliamentary Opposition. “I’m not satisfied that GOInvest has met its objectives. I think there is a lot that GOInvest should be doing. I think GO-Invest should be

playing a leading role in investment promotion and investment related advocating in Guyana, and I don’t think it has been doing that up to now,” Gaskin said in a recent interview with the State’s news agency. There have been heavy criticisms over the operations of GO-Invest in the past. Quite a number of investments were handled by the respective ministries, leaving the agency out-ofthe-loop. “I think GO-Invest has been sidelined by higher authorities in the past. You can’t have one investment agency and then have most of your major investments being handled outside of that agency.” “Go-Invest has to do what it was designed to do, and to that extent it must be given the authority to do so and it must be allowed to act without political interference,” he added. Minister Gaskin pointed

Business and Investment Minister, Dominic Gaskin out that going forward, the entity needs to be given new direction at the leadership level, as well as expanded capacity. Already, the Board of Directors have met since they were appointed. “I’m very encouraged by that first board meeting. I think it is a board that definitely can take GO-Invest forward,” he said. Approximately two months ago after assuming office, the Business Minister had pointed out that his Ministry will be moving towards a more transparent and level playing field in the Business Sector. He had stated that, “transparency, fairness, the whole idea of leveling the playing field is needed so that the competition is fair, so that you don’t have players in the same areas who are favoured.”

If Clinton Vigilance had only knew that kicking and cuffing the mother of his nine children would have landed him in a jail cell, maybe he would have walked away and left her arguing. However, from all indications it appears that his temper got the better of him. His alleged cruel action landed him before a city court where he was charged with unlawful assault. Clinton Vigilance of 175 Seal Street, Linden, is accused of unlawfully assaulting Juanita Boodhoo on Tuesday, August 4, at Mckenzie, Linden, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. Vigilance, 45, a carpenter, denied the allegation after it was read to him by Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday. The woman was not present when the matter was called during the court’s

afternoon session. Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones informed the court that the defendant and the victim have nine children together. He said that they are not living together. In relating the facts of the matter, the prosecutor informed the court that on the day in question, the defendant went to the woman’s house and assaulted her during a misunderstanding. The court heard that the defendant kicked and cuffed Boodhoo several times about her body causing her to receive injuries. Boodhoo subsequently reported the matter to the police, investigations were carried out, and the charge was instituted against the defendant. During the brief court hearing, the defendant had sought the Magistrate’s

permission to give his side of the story. When it was granted, he explained that he had approached his children’s mother over a concern he had with their 14year-old daughter. He said that the mother would usually allow the young girl to stray about the community. Vigilance pointed out that he is worried about his daughter’s safety. He added that the argument escalated into a fight. It was then the Magistrate sternly told him “that does not give you the right to beat the woman”. However, he still pleaded with her to release him on reasonable bail because he has to support his children. But his cries went unanswered as he was subsequently remanded to prison until August 18. His next court appearance will be at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.

There is an old adage that, “every long rope has an end”, and this was clearly the case for 24-year-old, Sherwin Herbert of Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, who managed to getaway on foot from police travelling in a vehicle. The police were looking for him after he was seen removing a gun from his waist. He was allegedly seen with the weapon on July 29, last, at Grove. Herbert is reportedly well known to law enforcement

authorities, and was captured four days ago after the police contacted him and told him about the allegation of, unlawful possession of arms and ammunitions. On Wednesday, the vendor appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where two criminal charges were read to him. It is alleged that Herbert had a semi-automatic pistol in his possession, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. He was also accused of unlawful possession of two live rounds of ammunition. Herbert pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently remanded to prison until October 19. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant is presenting the prosecution’s case. His facts revealed that on the day in question, around 01:20hrs, the police were on patrol at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara in

motor vehicle PTT 4855, when they observed the defendant on foot as he turned east into Tank Street, Grove. After seeing the police, the defendant removed the firearm from the right side of his pants waist and attempted to run. The police accelerated their vehicle which caused the defendant to stumble to the ground, during which time the gun which was in his possession fell on the roadway. Herbert then got up and made good his escape on foot, east of the said street. The police took possession of the firearm and examined it. They found a live round in the gun’s magazine and another round in the chamber. On August 3, the defendant was contacted by the police and told of the allegation, to which he denied, at the Providence Police Station. He was then arrested and charged.

Bosai workers strike ahead of likely retrenchment Bosai workers yesterday proceeded on strike in protest against the planned issuance of retrenchment letters to nearly four dozen of them today. The peaceful demonstration commenced in front of the company’s north gate, and later ended at the Regional Democratic Council, where the workers were briefly addressed by Regional Chairman Renis Morian. According to the workers, 47 of them are expected to be issued retrenchment letters. They are however adamant that they will not accept the “paltry package” being offered by Bosai, and vowed to continue industrial action until the company reviews the situation. One worker contended that since 2008 some workers who had been working eighthour shifts, had their hours of work increased by four hours, making it twelve-hour shifts. “Moving a worker from eight hours to twelve hours automatically is a seventyfive percent increase, because that is equivalent to four hours plus premium. But the company did not honour that, what they did was just add on a little more money on the salary, and say that is your twelve-hour (pay). “These employees had worked twelve-hour shifts before and were getting the overtime pay. But in 2008,

Some of the Bosai workers on the picket line yesterday management just come and say, ‘from today on, you’re working the twelve hour’. Now if your money was $100,000 dollars it reduced to $70,000. I want to know what happen to the rest of the money. The company right now underpaying a set of staff. This nonsense must stop.” ‘Now we talking about the retrenchment - all the persons will be affected because of the age factor (the elderly), because management say that they will be using the age factor, they’re not looking at who come first, last or what - now if you’re using the age factor, then all the elderly people should be given redundancy, because they are not coming back to work with the company and you cannot hold them at

ransom. As a matter of fact, the entire workforce want redundancy package, they don’t want no retrenchment package.” It was pointed out that the retrenchment package would be two weeks’ pay for every year a worker was employed by the company. “When they hold thirty percent and then the Government takes out another thirty percent tax, the people ain’t getting no kind’a money, those who work five years gon end up with $150,000. They’re loosing people on the road with just $150,000 - it cannot compensate. So if you loosing people, give them redundancy package and let them go on with their life. Another worker posited that Bosai’s management had

made agreements with both the Union and the regional Chairman, but had disregarded those agreements and are going forward with the issuing of retrenchment letters. The worker stressed that Bosai could have explored other options, but stuck to their decision to retrench fortyseven employees, despite the fact that a few staffers had resigned. Some workers raised the issue of monies owed to them by the company. According to them, they are owed bonus and sick leave money for over two years. They are demanding that the company do the right thing and pay them. As regards the situation with the workers, Chairman of Region 10, Renis Morian said

that he had attended a meeting with the Ministry of Labour where it had been pointed out that the Bosai employees had requested two conditions – one; that the “big men that wanted to go home” be given their

pension or redundancy and two; “let there be voluntary separation as the workers did not trust the fact that a Supervisor had to pick eight. They felt such a thing would be more subjective than objective, as some good men might be ‘thrown out” because they might not be on good terms with the supervisor. Morian added that when he called Bosai yesterday, an official of the company said that there had been no agreement at the Ministry of Labour. “While there might not have been an agreement, the last word from the Union was let there be voluntary separation, let the big men go, and Bosai did not make an objection, so the labour Ministry accepted that as the suggestion. Bosai is saying now they don’t have an (Continued on page 27)

$150,000 bail for duo... (From page 6) the attorney told the court that her client was hired by an employee of Baron and had provided the police with a statement on what transpired on the day in question. On the other hand, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones did not oppose the men being granted their pre-trial liberty. However, he asked that bail be granted in a substantial amount. He also pointed out that only 38 of the steel pipes were recovered. Peters had no legal representation and provided the court with his basic information when questioned. The magistrate instructed the men to report to the Amelia’s Ward Police Station, every Friday at 07:30hrs, until the completion of the matter.

Withdrawal of $$$ from commercial banks…

Transfer to Consolidated Fund will help reduce deficits - Finance Minister Concerns continue to mount, especially among members of the Banking Association and the Private Sector Commission (PSC), given government’s decision to no longer allow its monies to be held in commercial banks. This was indicated to the media on Wednesday via a statement by the Commission. The entity did not however, indicate what reasons government might have provided to them for taking this decision. However, Finance Minister, Winston Jordan sought to bring some clarity to the issue yesterday. Jordan said that during a meeting with the Banking Association, he explained that government would be moving to have the funds held by agencies such as the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) placed into the Consolidated Fund. These

agencies, among others, have been collecting monies on behalf of the state and have held them in accounts in some commercial banks. The Finance Minister emphasized that he made it clear to the association that these monies would not be moved until the forensic audits into these agencies have concluded. Jordan said that this sentiment was also communicated to the Chairman of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) Norman McLean. He said, however, that McLean expressed some reservations about the decision, and opined that should the administration go forward with such a decision, then it would lead to some problems for the commercial banks. “I told him that it is government’s money and it makes no sense having it in the commercial banks when it really belongs in the

Consolidated Fund. The Fund is in overdraft and putting the monies where they belong will help to reduce some of these deficits,” Jordan said. The Finance Minister said that at no time did he specify that $60B in total was being removed from commercial banks. He added, “I don’t know where they got this figure from. It is inaccurate. I never said that.” As for businesses complaining recently that their profits are being affected by the decline in economic activities, Jordan said, “They know that they are operating in an environment where they make a profit one day and can end up one day making a loss the next day.” The Finance Minister stressed that he explained to the business community that a combination of activities led to the current situation. He said that it was explained to the Private

Sector Commission that sugar and rice, two of the country’s biggest revenue earners are in dire straits while the gold sector is now crying about a decline in production and is calling for concessions. Jordan added, “How do we expect the economy to be as per normal with these situations before us? The issues affecting sugar and rice are not solved and may loom even larger next year. We have a plan in place, however, that will, as I said earlier, address the current situation.” The recent decline in economic activities prompted a meeting between the Commission and some businesses where they shared their concerns and discussed the impending and immediate effects of the situation. The Commission had said that already, some businesses have been forced to trim their staff size, while foreign and local business partners have

been left with no other choice but to put some of their investments on hold. The discussion between the two dealt with matters ranging from employee retrenchment to the sudden increase in crime, as well as spending on Government projects, and matters related to how the clearing of goods and the processing of investment agreements are affecting them. The Commission had said that business representatives mentioned that they have noticed a decline in consumer spending and expectations, and noted that projects are being delayed and/or suspended due to the cessation of payments. The entity had said that the business community is also concerned about the persistent “bottlenecks” when doing business with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). “It is the view of the business community that

Finance Minister Winston Jordan GRA needs to expand its taxpayers’ bracket and focus on those individuals who have been evading taxes for too long. To this end, Minister Jordan was written to, and meetings were held with the top brass of the GRA and the PSC,” the Commission had added via its missive to the media on Wednesday. The body also noted that (Continued on page 29)

Social (media) interactions ... what ? e m o c e b e w e hav

n the days of Tupac and Biggie, a rap beef – that is, a feud between two or more rappers – was a potentially dangerous thing; at its safest, the feud could result simply in a “diss” track so severe it could end a career. At its deadliest, someone could be killed, most likely gunned down in the streets. These days, things are much different. Rappers still employ the use of “diss” tracks but they have moved their fighting from the streets to social media. Over the last two weeks or so, the internet has been abuzz with news that an amicable relationship had broken down. Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, whose biggest achievement is being Nicki Minaj's boyfriend, casually tweeted his belief that Drake did not write his own lyrics. In the ensuing days, the issue quickly escalated with both Drake and Meek Mill producing songs specifically to fuel the beef. In response, the internet blew up with memes, jokes and even a burger company specialising in beef (the actual beef, that is) used the opportunity to advertise. However, such feuds via social media are not uncommon amongst celebrities. Just recently, “America's sweetheart” Taylor Swift and “Rap Queen” Nicki Minaj had their own little online tiff while “model” Amber Rose and some members of the Kardashian clan also had a very public quarrel. The best thing about these feuds is the fact that the world has a front row seat to the action. Because celebrities are abandoning traditional and more private methods of communication such as vis-àvis conversations, calling or emailing, their dirty secrets are put out there, all for our entertainment. Of course, celebrities are not the only ones who seem to prefer social media over traditional media when it comes to fighting. Right here in Guyana, regular people are engaging in their own online feuds. In a way, social media is like a room

packed with very different people and, as you try to navigate the room, you are bound to step on some toes. From there things will escalate, a fight will ensue, and everyone in the room will be watching eagerly to see how things progress. Just recently, I witnessed a very heated online fight; it involved a love triangle and, for hours on end, the triangle's members tweeted their fury, posted longwinded apologies on Instagram and made idle threats. On one hand the fight was entertaining but on the other it was highly uncomfortable. Now, more than ever, the world is connected in ways which would not have been possible a mere decade ago. People who you might not have heard from in years are right at your fingertips and, with just a few clicks, you can find out what they are eating, how they are feeling about particular issues, whether they are having a good or bad day and so on. Honestly, it's all rather uninteresting for the most part and many persons are too busy living their own lives to follow up with those of others. However, while there are persons who couldn't care less about social media, there are countless others who absolutely cannot live without it. It's clear to see that social media is a double-edged sword; with increased dependency on social media we are seeing decreased privacy. As previously said, people are sharing everything – relationships, new jobs, big life changes – and while it may be easy to remove things from your timeline or your profile, it's not as easy to make others forget. With social media, things are easy to save and even easier to share at a future time. So, if you want to share your “bikini body” with some friends or let out some steam or broadcast your latest partner, please, email, phone and postage services exist for a reason. Because remember, people are always watching and waiting for their next source of entertainment and you just might find yourself being their clown.

In addition, the Massey entity, through their brand Soldanza, will allow passengers to munch in style; on each journey persons will receive a pack of Soldanza Plantain Chips. Management noted that the main aim of the Pulse Taxi Service is to maintain stable pricing as well as allowing patrons to refresh themselves 'Southland International Style' even as they have their fill of the delicious Soldanza snacks.

THE POP CULT… THE REVIEWS ARE IN!!!

IMPOSSIBLE 5 has kept the franchise alive By Desilon Daniels

S

ome franchises lose their lustre after some time; some become repetitive and lose their spark while others become so ludicrous that they are unwatchable. Either way, something goes wrong and the subsequent films never top the initial one. But the Mission: Impossible franchise seems to have cracked the code for a successful series; even after the first movie was released in 1996, the Mission: Impossible franchise remains as relevant, as unpredictable and as riveting as ever before. And the latest installation, “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” is no different. Starring Tom Cruise (once again) as Impossible Missions Force (IMF) super spy Ethan Hunt, “Rogue Nation” picks up where the preceding movie (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) left off. In this movie, we see Hunt and his team members: Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) as they hunt down the elusive criminal group, the Syndicate. A mysterious femme fatale known as Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) is also thrown into the fray. From the first minute of the movie things get interesting; there is no time to waste and the action begins almost immediately. There is an undertone of urgency tingeing

the dialogue and the sequences push this urgency along. However, it is only an undertone – it is very subtle at first – but it is present throughout the movie. It is only when you feel your mouth drop open, or you gasp, or you find yourself on the edge of your seat do you realize just how anxious and invested you are in the characters onscreen. Of course, the action scenes are the main drivers of this urgency. Throughout the movie, Hunt and the other main characters are constantly faced with danger. However, even though there are numerous action scenes, they are not disjointed but are perfectly choreographed with good, logical pacing. The dialogue helps; it's not simplistic but is easy to follow and expert deliveries by the actors allow you to catch what is happening quickly. Visually, MI5 gets major points. The film is shot across a number of countries and from the tallest skyscraper to the littlest hut, there is beauty. The visual signature isn't anything spectacular. In other words, you aren't going to find many particular nuanced shots that you find interesting or memorable. However, the separate shots work well together and are practical for what is needed. It helps a lot that the use of computergenerated imagery is minimal; Cruise is well-known for performing much of his stunts and little CGI adds realism and danger to the film. Also, because there is few CGI, the film does not seem over the top and the death-defying and explosive scenes are allowed to proceed uninterrupted. When it comes to the storyline, there are enough twists and surprises to keep you completely interested but it is not convoluted to the point of confusion. Even better, the movie sticks to its guns (that is, the relentless action and heist theme) with little to no room for romance. There is sex appeal, of course, but it is not distracting and for that viewers can be thankful. Overall, MI5 was a resounding success. It's an adrenaline-filled ride which leaves you excited from the second the Mission: Impossible theme song kicks in. But there's also a lot of the heart in it that made the franchise so great and that will ultimately determine the anticipation for the next installation. Your mission, if you choose to accept it? Watch this film.

Princess Movie Theatre has not taken its

considerable support from Guyanese for granted

T

he entertainment industry is filled with various forms of excitement. Every so often, some entities which provide these activities for our enjoyment get complacent with the quality of service they offer and, worse yet, the product. Of course, a combination of the two leads to the introduction of new competitors in the field in hopes of winning over displeased customers. This week we turn our attention to the movie theatres and, in forthcoming articles, we will examine the players in this field and what they offer. The Entertainment Police visited the Princess Movie Theatres last Saturday to observe if the company may have been slipping in any regard. We are pleased to report that after enjoying two years of considerable support thus far from the Guyanese public, the company has not taken its fan base for granted. When the E. Police arrived, showing at the time was Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. It was noted that before patrons waited in a queue to enter the theatre, they bought refreshments and were served by courteous staff. It is refreshing that after some months in the business, this

characteristic of the company has not changed. They still continue to provide quality and management has expressed a commitment to continue doing so. As for the actually screening of the movie , one was reminded that the experience of being in the cinema as opposed to watching the movie in the comfort of your own home are just two entirely different experiences. Sharing in the laughter, the sitting at the edge of your seat experience and noticing how love scenes motivated some couples to make out are just priceless moments. Though the Princess Movie Theatres may have other competitors vying to eclipse its importance to the Guyanese, its cozy setting and friendly service remain their most memorable assets. The Entertainment Police can only continue to urge the entity to maintain this trend. Stay tuned to next week's edition to see the reviews on the Caribbean Cinemas at the Giftland Mall and which entity actually stands as the better theatre in Guyana. US help sought in protecting passports, birth certificates issuances Guyana has asked the US for help to safeguard the processing of passports and birth certificates. The issue was raised when Minister of Citizenship, Winston Felix, recently met with US Chargé d’ Affaires, Bryan Hunt, and a number of issues for possible collaboration were discussed. Minister Felix, according to the Ministry of Presidency, disclosed that among the matters raised were the secure production of documents and guarding against falsification of birth certificates. He noted that it is a well-known fact that there are weaknesses in the system and as such, these must be strengthened. “We need to have a system which ensures that passports and birth certificates are secure and are acceptable. However, birth certificates are most vulnerable to falsification and that is what we want to strengthen so that it is easy to detect,” Minister Felix said. The Minister said that the US Chargé d’ Affaires has assured that the Embassy will be providing some guidelines for sources from which the requisite paper and ink to strengthen the integrity of the birth certificates can be acquired. The US, through its Embassy in Guyana, will also be looking to strengthen the cooperation in border security under the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, with

possible areas of training included. Moves by the new administration to decentralize some of the immigrations services to outlying areas were also raised. Recently, an immigration centre at Springlands in Region 6 was opened, which allows residents to uplift their passports, once they have completed the application process. In the past, persons had to travel to the city to apply and then return to uplift their passports. Minister Felix said that his Ministry is currently discussing the eventuality of the establishment of an office where passports will be distributed in Region 1. There are existing distribution centres in Regions 2, 5, 6 Springlands and New

Amsterdam -7, 8 and 10. He noted that works are currently in progress to strengthen the Springlands office, to not only distribute passports but to also process applications. The Minister, however, explained that this is a sensitive issue which cannot be rushed. “Our objective is just to achieve just that. We want to remove the crowds from Georgetown and issue in the other areas, but of course decentralisation is a sensitive issue. It is not easy to divest from the central point. The equipment, the materials; birth certificates and especially passports are vulnerable and in demand, and all sorts of people with ill intent will want to get their hands on it. We need to have the buildings up and secured before we move into that,” Felix emphasised.

Bosai workers strike ahead of... (From page 13) agreement. So the workers now hearing that they will get letters after all that was discussed, hence they decided to strike.” Morian further reported that he was shown some figures by Bosai, purporting to be sales figures, but he rejected them because they were not audited figures, and so he could not determine their authenticity. “So here I am, the workers are in front of my office and so I’ve called for a mediator Minister Simona Broomes, who is expected to be here at three o’clock, to meet with Bosai, the Workers and

people from her Ministry. Morian reiterated the call for the contract between Bosai and the Government to be reviewed, as the contract seemed not to be in favour of the workers. He said that as Regional Chairman, he had no knowledge what the contract means or says as it relates to the workers of the Region. Again Morian emphasized

the need for a “win- win” situation. In a meeting with Morian on Tuesday, Bosai executives had contended that retrenchment is presently their only option, given the decrease in Bauxite sales, the high cost of freight to markets, and the fact that the company had only been operating one Kiln since last year July.

conclusion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI). The charge facing Massiah states that on November 28, 2014 at Lot 9 Camp and D’Urban Streets, Georgetown he murdered Raghubir. Police Corporal Deniro Jones presented the prosecution’s case and called several witnesses to testify during the trial. According to reports, Raghubir also known as ‘Dogula Boy’ was stabbed to

death around 2 am at G City Electronics and Record Bar, at Camp and D’Urban Streets, where he had worked. His body was found lying at the back of the business place after an employee became suspicious after seeing Massiah washing blood off the concrete in front of the store. An alarm was raised and when several civilians proceeded to the back of the yard Raghubir’s lifeless body was discovered.

Fraudulent conversion charge against welder dismissed A West Ruimveldt welder was given a second chance after a charge of fraudulent conversion against him was dismissed yesterday by City Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. Devon Cosbert, 30, of Lot 24 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown was accused of converting the sum of $200,000 given to him by Pellon Sam to purchase steel rods and other materials, to his own use and benefit. He was entrusted with the

A country is always better off using fresh ideas and young blood - Former Regional Chairman Former Region 10 Chairman, Sharma Solomon believes that it is time for a deeper involvement of the youth in not only national discussion but governance of the country. In the same breath, he stressed that a country is in any case, always better off when it utilizes fresh ideas and young blood. Speaking with this newspaper on Tuesday, Solomon said that he is aware of the lack of faith in youth and placed the blame squarely at the feet of those young persons of the previous administration who engaged in acts of poor governance. He pointed specifically in this regard, to former President Bharrat Jagdeo. He said that it is understandable that Jagdeo’s “bad governance, voracious appetite and un-gentlemanlike attitude” left a bad taste in people’s mouth and gave youth a bad rap. He said however that Jagdeo who came to the presidency at age 35 is an exception and not the norm. He said that looking within and out of Guyana; there are numerous persons

who have made invaluable contributions to the process of governance in their youth. He mentioned some of these persons to be the late Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, Martin Luther King Jr., US President Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and Malcolm X. Solomon stressed that these individuals were in their 20s and 30s when they became involved in national issues and held the reins of government. On this note, he emphasized that there is a need for a renewed confidence in the youth of today to hold similar positions and be given the opportunities to contribute to the body politic of the day. Further, Solomon said that given the high rate of unemployment in Guyana, there is an urgent need to examine the possible creation of a national service. He made this comment while referring to a recently released Caribbean Development Bank study which pegs youth unemployment in Guyana at

Former Region 10 Chairman, Sharma Solomon approximately 40 percent. Solomon said that with approximately 60 to 65 percent of the population 40 years and younger, this situation raises eyebrows. “It says too that the Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar governments did not have a Youth Policy to address this crisis. This level of unemployment can give rise to social diseases such as crime, increase poverty, poor health, attraction to the drug trade and reduction in life expectancy. Another factor is that unemployment

contributes to brain drain, further depleting the nation of its most vital resource for development and sustainability,” the Lindener explained. He said during his telephone interview that while he is not disputing the plans of the new administration in addressing the issue of unemployment, the process needs to be given some impetus. He added that while the one can also expect some level of “staticness” since the government only came out of elections in May, young people are waiting to make their contribution to the governance process. “The conditions are ripe right now for a national discussion with the youth on the issues that are out there on the front burner…We had a situation over the last two decades where governments didn’t think it wise of implementing a policy to guide the integration of young people into the system, and it means that the new administration has its work cut out for them.” Through a missive to the media, he added, “Young people desire to make their own history. They want to build Guyana and cooperate with their elders in doing so. The young have ideas on how things can be done and since ideas in driving the nation’s agenda and

programme take place at the policy-making phase, having a seat at the table will make a difference. Yes, youth can.” He had said that a National Service along the line where Guyanese are engaged in personal growth and nation-building through skills acquisition and application, populating the hinterland and reinforcing border security, may be just what Guyana needs at this time. Solomon had said that he has been advised that the military component in the Guyana National Service (GNS) was guided by a policy to have Guyanese equipped to deal with border threats and that the Service was also a mechanism for satisfying employment needs. He had said, too, that the ongoing territorial controversy between Guyana and Venezuela also makes it pressing to review the necessity of such an institution which can simultaneously provide employment opportunities and reinforcement of Guyana’s capacity to handle its border issues effectively. Solomon held the view that though the young may have been told about or listened to the ‘bad’ stories of 30-plus years ago, they are not necessarily wedded to or interested in these stories in an unholy manner, because

they have not experienced them personally. Solomon insisted that history, through the lens of youth, is revisited with the desire to understand what made earlier leaders do what he did and usually devoid of deep-seated rancour. “Though some see youthful zeal as impatience, it is not. Or if this is so construed, it may be impatience with having to be tied to and burdened by a political past you were not responsible for, had no control over, played no part in… or having to feel that your entire life will be wasted, tied down to marking time and settling old scores.” Solomon argued that youth do not want to be shackled by the past. He said that they want to learn from the past; correct the mistakes of the past and adopt the positives of the past. He stated that youth can see benefits in and learn from the mistakes from all leaders of the past, and do not want to have to feel forced to choose one over the other, or see good only in one and bad only in the other. “The dead cannot be raised and there is no interest in jumbie politics,” he added. The former Region Ten Chairman emphasised that young people are also not looking for handouts and sympathy.

Increased taxes needed to carry out statutory functions - Region 10 IMC Chairman

By Jacquey Bourne The current rates and taxes receivable in the Mining town of Linden cannot suffice for the work of the Town Council, which has a burgeoning housing programme currently ongoing. In this regard, Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman Orrin Gordon has highlighted the need for rates and taxes to be increased. In an interview, Gordon disclosed, “We have said before that the rates and taxes that had been charged in the community are definitely too low; and because it is that low, it means it is having an impact on the (IMC’s) ability to carry out those functions for the municipality, those statutory functions. In addition to that, the community has grown in size; and because it has grown in size, it means that the amount of work that is required has increased.”

Region 10 IMC Chairman, Orrin Gordon Making a pitch on the functions of the council in light of this proposed increase in the town, Gordon indicated “Therefore patching of roads and all of that. We have added, along with Central Amelia’s Ward, Block 22 and Blueberry Hill and all those places — which is nearly 100 km of road has been added in Linden, there is need for constant attention. This is because the

quality of work that had been done from the inception, that quality of work had not been to the best. So, because it had not been to the best, what has happened is that you have a situation whereby you might repair today or do some patchwork this year, next year you have got to come back again and do some more patchwork, because of the quality of work that has been done.” The IMC Chairman feels that if this situation is not addressed the town will decline. “We have that situation confronting us, and we have had to deal with it, and will continue to do so. So we said valuation and continued valuation — that is one thing we have to do. That stage with the valuation process is where we have gone in the direction whereby we have gone to find a valuator. We decided we are going to pay the valuator, because we

It said, too, that there is an increased level of defaulting loans being recorded in some sectors of the economy. The PSC is of the opinion that once there is a decline in consumer expectations and spending, it can create drops in sales and profits. This development it said, would force businesses to put a hold on hiring and inevitably the retrenchment of employees. The PSC had said that while it commends the actions taken by the Government and the Guyana Police Force in the solving of recent crimes, it believes that more should be done to prevent and detect crimes

and restore the confidence in law enforcement. It had said that there has been a call for stronger police presence in and around the city as businesses are concerned about their employees and customers being robbed in the streets and at their homes. The Commission had indicated that it has also recognized that the economy has taken a downturn since 2014, but the present administration has an opportunity to restore this confidence, by releasing a budget that would stimulate spending. Additionally, it opined that the Government needs to ensure the efficiency of GRA and to restart

spending through issuance of contracts, etc. The Commission had said that it urged the Finance Minister during a meeting on the 2015 budget, to consider a stimulus to boost the economy, since there has been a slowdown in business. The Minister had given his commitment to consider this proposal. He also committed to ensuring stability of the currency through appropriate monetary policies. The discussions between the two also focused on a number of areas, such as the urgent need for liberalization of the telecommunications sector.

know when we get back those taxes it will compensate our efforts.” Gordon remarked that the previous Minister rejected that step taken, and they went in a direction that took over seven to eight months to happen. According to Gordon there is a serious problem, and he believes the Valuation Division should go under the Ministry of Communities rather than stay under the Ministry of Finance, because it relates more to the Ministry of Communities. He said it is so because all the buildings

and infrastructure that they will have to do valuation for basically would have been under the Ministry of Communities - which also takes care of rates and taxes and not the Valuation Department. He claimed there is another scenario whereby there is an arrangement which has been taken over by the Minister of Local Government. The Municipal Act says that the Minister of Local Government supports the activities of the municipality, but not dictates and controls. “What happened is that the Ministry, from 2007, had

been deciding who is going to sign our accounts; and we can’t do that, because that is what they want — a way to decide who will sign on the account. It even got so ridiculous whereby the Minister decides only the Town Clerk and the acting Treasurer can deposit monies for the council.” The IMC Chairman maintained: “I know anybody can deposit, but it is only by cheque you can withdraw money, and there are systems that are in place for that. So why would you do that? It is because we had threatened to go and open the Toll Booth.”

Some of the stranded passengers at the airport From page 12 were on the plane for two hours when they were asked to disembark the aircraft. The illegal Indian nationals were then seen sitting on the tarmac of the airport as Immigration and airline officials tried to settle the issue. Passengers said they were left in the dark, except that they were told that it was an immigration issue which needed to be resolved. “They didn’t tell us much...just that there was an

immigration issue. Eventually they told us it was resolved, but then later they told us that we needed to exit the plane,” one passenger told Kaieteur News. Several other passengers voiced frustration over the incident since they were affected. The flight to Aruba was scheduled to leave Guyana at 06:45hrs, with connecting flights to Curacao, Miami and other destinations. Many of the passengers had been at the airport for hours. They

claimed that they waited for an official explanation about how the situation would be handled, but it was not until around 10:36hrs that an Insel Air official announced that all passengers should go home and return today. The passengers claimed that no compensation was offered by the airline. “Some passengers have paid a substantial amount of money to get to the airport and some of us were hungry, tired, on medication and without cash. Our family

members are awaiting our arrival, but we have no answers for them,” another passenger told this publication. Daphne King said that her family “has special business to conduct in Curaçao by tomorrow (this) afternoon, and this delay will greatly affect our plans and also our finances. Again, I express displeasure about the way this matter is being handled and I am prepared to take legal action against the airline”.

By returning to Parliament, Bharrat Jagdeo has... From page 4 Panel on Climate Change, Rajendra K. Pachauri, as “one of perhaps half a dozen Heads of Government who truly understands the issue.” Bharrat Jagdeo was the one who initiated the funding of US$250 million to Guyana in a partnership with Norway for avoided greenhouse gas emissions from Guyana’s forest. As a highly respectable international personality with a proven track record as a brilliant economist and former Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo is in demand. He would be a prize catch for a host of international organizations and banking institutions wishing to employ his

services and expertise. The salary and benefits he could attract would be much more lucrative than that of President Granger, even with the sizable increase he would soon be giving himself. Most in Jagdeo’s position would grab the opportunity and run with it. So why does he stay in a country where he is constantly being ridiculed by a hostile media and the likes of Freddie Kissoon? Although Bharrat Jagdeo had signaled earlier that he had no interest in accepting another political a p p o i n t m e n t , he understands that the need to serve his country is much greater than any personal plans he may have.

By his return to Parliament, Jagdeo has demonstrated his commitment to serve the people of Guyana, and the need to put country above self. He is fully aware that he has a major task ahead if he is to prevent the Guyana

economy from slipping back into bankruptcy under the PNC-led APNU-AFC Administration. After all, he is best experienced and prepared to protect the legacy the PPP/C has left behind. Harry Gill

Burnham hailed as nat’l hero, ‘father of the nation’ at commemoration of 30th death anniversary

Guyanese Icon, Musician Eddy Grant during his reflections By Sunita Samaroo Outstanding 20th century leader, visionary, innovator, builder, educator and women rights advocate were just a few of the words voiced to describe the nation’s First Executive President and Founder Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC), Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham during the commemoration of his 30th death anniversary yesterday. At a late-afternoon ceremony held by the National Congress of Women (NCW), the unique political and philosophical beliefs of the nation’s former leader were brought into focus. Burnham, some renowned figures said, was not fully appreciated for the contributions he made in his time and the vision he had for the nation was grossly misunderstood. Among those who gathered to pay tribute to the late leader were members of the party that he founded, Ministers of Government, longstanding city Mayor, Hamilton Green, members of his family and representatives

GYSM Executive, Dave Danny, during a riveting poetry recital

of the NCW. In brief remarks, Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally, hailed Burnham as the father of the nation. She said even as an academic and Attorney-at-Law, politics was in Burnham’s blood. Ally reflected that the nation’s former leader propelled the nation’s growth as he was an indefatigable foe of apartheid, a visionary, an advocate for women’s rights. He was also concerned for youth development. “He served the nation well and eventually earned the Order of Excellence,” remarked Ally. Burnham, she reflected, was a great international leader who served his country, the Caribbean and the world at large with distinction. Vice Chairperson of the National Congress of Women (NCW) and Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence told the gathering that the former President, who died in 1985, was born in Kitty, earned a British Guiana Scholarship and read for his Law Degree at the University of London. The gathering was told

that Burnham, who later became a Senior Counsel, was involved in the local government and once held the post of Mayor. Lawrence added that Burnham, a trade unionist, was once the President of the Guyana Labour Union. The NCW Chairperson divulged that the former President played a vital role in shaping the economical, social and political spheres of the country. His contributions and achievements as President, she related, were many to Guyana, the Caribbean and the world. To party members, she said Burnham was more than a founding leader and nation builder. He was a father figure and role model. “I can go on and on about his clairvoyance, how he lived ahead of his time, his dedication and his enduring legacy, spirit of independence and self-determination. Today, had he been alive he would have been 92 years and as we commemorate the anniversary of his death, let us remember him for what he is: one of the most

A section of the gathering yesterday outstanding leaders of the 20th century,” Lawrence said to a resounding round of applause. The NCW Chairperson urged those who gathered to remember the Burnham legacy and honour his memory. “This man was a complex and intriguing personality. We owe him for his commitment to nation building and the foundation that he laid for the cultural and economic liberation of this country. Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham was a man who devoted his life to serve and his vision is still current today,” Lawrence posited. Guyanese icon, Eddy Grant filled the audience’s ears with memories of Burnham. He emphasised that the former leader was “all about inclusiveness.” Defending his friend, Grant said “When all is said and done, he (Burnham) is the single greatest visionary this region has produced.” He said that the former President foresaw what others couldn’t at the time and problems arose because the population was not

prepared. The former President, the gathering heard, gave much thought to the beauty of his country and the resources it has, but was under-appreciated. “He told us about our wood, gold, our women,” said Grant who added that the former leader went as far as to educate the Caribbean and the rest of the world. Grant expressed that the population was blinded to how special the former leader was. “He was a special character with all the gifts of a leader…Guyana has suffered as a result of the loss of Forbes Burnham,” the Guyanese icon reflected. Burnham, in his eyes too, was an inclusive leader, “a man who thought great things of small people.” Grant said he has planted thirty palms in his memory. Meanwhile, General Secretary of the PNC, Oscar Clarke spoke of their 1964 Manifesto, The New Road, where Burnham said Guyana was struggling to survive as a nation, torn by decision and impoverished as a result of partisanship and

incompetence. “It needs a new breath of life, it needs unity and purpose. It cries out for leadership that is national, not sectional; leadership inspired with the ideal of building a free, prosperous and democratic nation where fear is banished and a man is a man,” Clarke recited. Burnham, he said, believed that it was only through unity of purpose and action that a nation, free, democratic and prosperous would have been built. The founding leader’s goals, Clarke said, is also being reflected by the David Granger-led administration. The ceremony was done at the NCW Headquarters which also houses a monument of the former leader. Wreaths were laid at the moment by various figures. Among those who partook in the wreath-laying included, the former President’s son-in-law, Dr. Richard Van West Charles, Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, PNC Member, Sharma Solomon and Eddy Grant.

Looting and violence on the rise in Venezuela supermarkets

People queue outside a state-run Bicentenario supermarket as they wait to buy staple items, in Caracas August 4, 2015. REUTERS/Carlos Garcia Rawlins CARACAS (Reuters) Venezuelan supermarkets are increasingly being targeted by looters as swollen lines and prolonged food shortages spark frustration in the OPEC nation struggling with an economic crisis. Shoppers routinely spend hours in lines to buy consumer staples ranging from corn flour to laundry soap, turning lines into venues for shoving matches and now more frequent attempts to plunder shops. The economic crisis has hit President Nicolas Maduro’s approval ratings and raised tension levels in the country. Fifty-six incidents of looting and 76 looting attempts took place in the first half of 2015, according local NGO Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, which based the

figures on media reports and testimony of observers around the country. On Sunday, a small crowd in the western city of San Cristobal pushed its way into the government-run Bicentenario supermarket to grab products after it had closed, leaving staff scratched and bruised, according to store manager Edward Perez. “As we were closing, a group of 20 people unexpectedly started shouting insults at the government and the workers,” said Perez in a telephone interview. Several looters were arrested after the fracas, which Perez blamed on “ultraright-wing sectors of the opposition” seeking to sow violence. Last Friday, one man was killed and 60 were arrested in

Ciudad Guayana in southern Venezuela after shops were looted. The government did not respond to a request for comment on the lootings but Maduro calls the shortages and the unrest a product of an opposition-led “economic war”. More frequent than these serious events are minor melees that ensue when delivery trucks arrive at stores carrying prized products such as chicken or milk. But the combination of limited official information and exaggerated rumors propagated via Twitter often makes it difficult to distinguish between the two. According to polls, his party is expected to do poorly in legislative elections later this year, its support hit by high inflation, the currency’s collapse and food shortages.

BRASILIA (Reuters) President Dilma Rousseff’s approval rating remains at rock bottom while a growing number of Brazilians want to see her impeached and fewer think she will see the end of her term, according to a poll published yesterday. With a huge corruption scandal rocking her government and Brazil sliding into its worst economic downturn in 25 years, pollster Datafolha said Rousseff’s approval rating has fallen to 8 percent, close to the 7.7 percent reported in another recent survey. The number of Brazilians that consider her administration “bad” or “very bad” touched 71 percent, up from 65 percent in the previous Datafolha poll in

June. Two in every three respondents, or 66 percent, said Rousseff should face an impeachment process, up from 63 percent in an April poll. While a majority of Brazilians still expect to see the leftist leader serve out her term, Datafolha said 38 percent now see her being impeached, up from 29 percent in April. Rousseff’s popularity is the lowest for any Brazilian president since Datafolha started polling, even lower that of Fernando Collor de Mello in 1992 as he faced impeachment for corruption. Just six months into her second term, she is facing mounting calls for her

impeachment. Her adversaries are waiting for a nationwide protest against her government on Aug. 16 to gauge popular sentiment and a court ruling on her administration’s accounts before deciding whether to seek her impeachment. Political uncertainty has weakened the Brazilian currency to 12-year lows. The real was trading 3.51 to the dollar yesterday morning. In a sign that Rousseff is losing support in her governing coalition, the lower house of Congress overwhelmingly passed a bill on Wednesday to raise the wages of some public employees, a blow to her efforts close a gaping fiscal gap.

More than 200 feared dead in sinking of migrant boat

PALERMO, Sicily - Hopes faded of finding more survivors yesterday from a shipwreck in which 200 migrants are feared drowned, as rescue ships were called to the aid of more migrant boats in the same area of the Mediterranean. (Reuters) PALERMO, Sicily (Reuters) - Hopes faded of finding more survivors yesterday from a shipwreck in which 200 migrants are feared drowned, as rescue ships were called to the aid of more migrant boats in the same area of the Mediterranean. “We are witnessing a genocide caused by European selfishness,” said Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando as the Irish navy ship LE Niamh docked in the port carrying some 370 survivors of Wednesday’s disaster and 25 corpses, including three children. Orlando, speaking on Italian television as hearses arrived to take the bodies away, called on European leaders to do more to prevent such disasters and to allow more refugees to re-settle in their countries. After the survivors disembarked, some were escorted back on board to see if they could identify the dead children. Police said they had detained five men suspected of having piloted the boat that

overturned on Wednesday and of having had a role in trafficking the migrants. Vessels from the Italian and Irish navies and humanitarian agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) saved about 400 people from the fishing boat, thought to have been carrying up to 600 people, mostly Syrians fleeing their country’s civil war. They found no more survivors after scouring the waters overnight. Italian vessels continued to search the area yesterday, a coastguard spokesman said. Seas were very calm yesterday, perfect conditions to attempt the sea crossing, said a Reuters photographer aboard the privately funded Phoenix, a vessel run by MSF and the Migrant Offshore Aid Station. The Phoenix was responding to a distress call for a boat carrying about 500 people, he said. The coastguard picked up 381 yesterday morning, while an Italy navy ship took 101 from a large rubber boat, and the MSF vessel Argos rescued 87, according to their Twitter

accounts. Wednesday’s tragedy occurred when the boat flipped over as the LE Niamh approached, probably because desperate passengers surged to one side as they spotted the ship. “What happened here was because the boat was so overloaded, and the conditions were such that the boat started taking on water and it listed to one side, capsized and sank, all in the space of two minutes,” Irish Defence Minister Simon Coveney said on Irish state radio RTE yesterday. The Irish ship is part of the European Union Triton mission, which was expanded after up to 800 migrants drowned in a shipwreck in April. The Mediterranean Sea is the world’s most deadly border area for migrants. More than 2,000 migrants and refugees have died so far this year trying to reach Europe by boat, compared with 3,279 during the whole of last year, the International Organization for Migration said on Tuesday.

CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - South African President Jacob Zuma defended the decision to let Sudanese President Omar Hassan alBashir evade an arrest warrant and leave the country in June, saying yesterday, the wanted leader had had immunity as a guest of the African Union. Bashir - accused of masterminding genocide during Sudan’s Darfur conflict - was allowed to leave an AU summit and fly home in defiance of a local court ruling ordering his

detention under a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC). “Bashir’s coming to South Africa, it was on the invitation of the AU (African Union),” Zuma said in his first comments on the incident since Bashir’s departure. “He is the guest of the AU,” Zuma told opposition politicians who demanded an explanation in parliament. Bashir’s exit triggered an international outcry and highlighted deep rifts between the global court and

African powers who have accused the ICC of bias against the continent. The Hague-based tribunal - set up to try the worst crimes when local courts fail - has so far only charged Africans. Mmusi Maimane, head of the opposition Democratic Alliance, caller Bashir “a man wanted ... for genocide against Africans,” and asked Zuma why he had not kept previous promises to enforce the warrant - as all ICC members are bound to do.

Obama’s choice on Iran deal ‘absurd’: Senate leader McConnell WA S H I N G T O N (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell yesterday rejected President Barack Obama’s pitch for the Iran nuclear deal, saying it was “absurd” to argue that lawmakers must essentially choose between the agreement or going to war. Obama made a “huge mistake” with that argument, McConnell, a Republican, told reporters in response to a speech by Obama on Wednesday. “It’s not this deal versus war. That’s the argument they’ve been making during the whole negotiation. It’s either this deal or a better deal, or more sanctions.” Obama defended the July 14 U.S.-led international deal against a furious lobbying effort by political opponents and Israel, and said abandoning the agreement would open up the prospect of war. The president said if the Republican-controlled

Congress blocked the deal, it would accelerate Tehran’s path to a nuclear bomb. “Let’s not mince words. The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war. Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not three months from now, but soon,” Obama, a Democrat, said. But McConnell was not buying it. “That’s an absurd argument,” he said. Obama’s speech was part of a push to promote the accord negotiated over 18 months between Iran and six world powers. The six agreed to lift economic sanctions on Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program, which Tehran said was for peaceful energy purposes only. Opponents of the agreement have said the deal does not go far enough to ensure Iran will never be able to develop a nuclear weapon. They have cited the length of time between notifications and inspections by the

International Atomic Energy Agency and their objections to doing anything that might help Iran because of its backing for Islamist militant groups. Obama urgently needs his fellow Democrats’ support in Congress, but only a few dozen have come out so far as strongly in favor. The White House has pressured Congress to support the deal as lawmakers head home for an August recess. Congress has until Sept. 17 to vote on it. A resolution rejecting it would cripple the agreement by eliminating Obama’s ability to waive many sanctions - if the resolution survives a presidential veto. Senate leaders have agreed to start the Iran debate as soon as they return to Washington on Sept. 8. McConnell said the Senate would deal with the issue “with dignity and respect,” but he was very critical of what he called the president’s “incendiary rhetoric” on Iran.

Malaysia says matches prove wing part is from missing flight MH370

Bao Lanfang (C), whose son, daughter-in-law and 3-year-old granddaughter were aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, kneels down in front of media before she and other family members express their demands to Malaysia Airlines outside its Beijing office yesterday. Reuters/Jason Lee Reuters - Malaysia said yesterday paint colour and maintenance-record matches proved that a piece of wing found on the shore of an Indian Ocean island was part of the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, which vanished last year. Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said investigators on the French-governed island of Reunion had collected more aircraft debris, including a plane window and aluminium foil, but there was no confirmation they also belonged to the missing plane. With the first trace of the plane confirmed, Malaysia has asked the governments of neighbouring Mauritius and Madagascar to help

widen the search area, he told reporters. Earlier, Prime Minister Najib Razak confirmed that the piece of debris was from the Boeing 777 airliner that was bound for Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 passengers and crew on board when it went missing. “Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370,” Najib said in a televised address. The airline described the find as “a major breakthrough”. The first piece of direct

evidence that the plane crashed in the sea closed a chapter in one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. But exactly what happened remains unknown and Najib’s announcement did not appear to represent any kind of resolution for the families of those on board, most of whom were Chinese. The fragment of wing known as a flaperon was flown to mainland France after being found last week covered in barnacles on a Reunion beach. French authorities said they would step up efforts today to find more debris off Reunion. That will include deploying a military aircraft as well as more police at sea and on the shore.

Stosur likes odds as Serena... From page 42 to joining American Maureen Connolly, Aussie Margaret Court and Germany’s Steffi Graf as the only women to complete the calendar-year singles Grand Slam, Williams can match Graf’s Open Era record of 22 career Grand Slam singles titles by winning the US Open. That would put her two shy of Court’s all-time record 24 Slam singles crowns. “It’s incredible what Serena is trying to achieve and what she has achieved. She is the best player of this generation by far,” Stosur said. “She deserves all the accolades she gets. To come back and win and play all those big moments really well, it’s really amazing.” That said, Stosur also says that Williams and her bid at more tennis history is not the focus of other players, noting, “None of us are really sitting around the locker room saying how great Serena is.”

GFF appeals FIFA’s decision The Guyana Football Federation (GFF), through General Secretary Richard Groden, yesterday dispatched an official letter of appeal to FIFA’s Appeals Committee, following the world governing body’s decision to reward St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) the protest filed by Guyana. The letter was addressed to Mr. Larry Mussenden, Chairman of FIFA’s Appeals Committee. The GFF on June 16 had requested FIFA’s investigation and adjudication on a possible violation of the FIFA rules by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF) for fielding a player not in possession of a St. Vincent & the Grenadines Passport during the World Cup Qualification match on June 14, 2015 at the Guyana National Stadium. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruled that, “after careful examination of all the requested information and documentation, it was considered that no further

intervention was necessary in such context”. However, the GFF is of the view that the Disciplinary Committee gave no explanation for its ruling and no reference was made to the ineligibility of the player for presenting a Passport other than that of the country of the participating member association (SVG) he was representing. The GFF challenge was premised on the fact that the player in question, Garvin James, did not have a SVG Passport as required by FIFA Regulations for the FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia. Referring to Article 7 of the ‘General Provisions’ which states that “The Regulations and all directives, decisions, guidelines and circulars issued by FIFA shall be binding for all parties participating and involved in the preparation, organisation, and hosting of the 2018 FIFA World Cup”. Under Article 19, paragraph 3 of the Regulations, it states “The ONLY document considered to be valid proof of a player’s identity and

nationality shall be a passport that explicitly states the player’s day, month and year of birth. Identity cards or other supporting official documents shall not be accepted as a valid means of identification. The participating member associations shall present each player’s valid national passport for the country of the participating member association to the FIFA Match Commissioner on the day before the match. A player without a valid passport shall not be entitled to play” The GFF also reminded FIFA, for the WCQ, Guyana did not play four players who did not have a Passport in their possession but who had met all requirements for citizenship. “If a stamp in their passports of the countries of birth or some other form of documentation from the Guyana government, other than a passport, would have sufficed, the GFF would have fielded those players and the outcome of the matches might have been different” Groden said in the letter.

and Campbelle (0-19 from 6) all bowled well to keep the shackles on the opposition ladies. When Guyana, who finished runner-up to Jamaica in the tournament last year in Dominica, began their runchase Lashuna Toussaint (2) edged Skipper Yasmine St. Ange to the Keeper with just seven runs on the board before Katana Mentore (6) was removed by Qiana Joseph at 23-2. Campbelle and Henry added 66 for the third wicket to take the score to 89-3 before Krisani Irish had Henry caught and bowled, while Kavita Yadram (1) fell to Krisani Iris and Mangru (1) was run out to leave Guyana on 107-5. But Campbelle, who stroked the ball elegantly and Smartt, who hammered two fours from eight balls, ensured that Guyana won in emphatic fashion. Earlier, Annica Andrew hit a painstaking 24 from 121 balls before she was fourth out to Mangru, who on the standby list for the last couple of years, got her first wicket at this level when she bowled the opener at 73-4 but only Qiana Joseph, whose 50-ball 33 was decorated with three boundaries and Roylin Cooper with an undefeated 19 from 32 balls, reached double figures for the Islanders. Guyana are set to face Barbados tomorrow in their next match.

Ruthless England turn the screw as Australia wilt

NOTTINGHAM, England (Reuters) England skittled out shell-shocked Australia for 60 and piled up 274 for four in reply to take control of the fourth Ashes test on a dramatic first day at Trent Bridge on Thursday. A rampant Stuart Broad took eight wickets as the tourists were dismissed before lunch, while Joe Root (124 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (74) batted England into a commanding position. The hosts, 2-1 up in the series and without their leading bowler James Anderson, needed only 18.3 overs to run through the touring side who collapsed to their joint sixth-lowest Ashes total in just over 90 minutes. Broad struck five times in his first four overs, claiming his 300th test victim with the third ball of the morning when he had opener Chris Rogers caught at first slip by Alastair Cook for a duck. Steven Smith, on six, edged the last ball of the first over to Root in the slips and David Warner (zero) nicked his second delivery from Mark Wood to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, leaving the Australians in tatters at 10-3. Captain Michael Clarke, who dropped one place down the order to number five, walked out to face only the ninth delivery of the match. BRILLIANT CATCH England, who won the toss, struck again when Shaun Marsh edged Broad to Ian Bell at second slip and Adam Voges was brilliantly caught one-handed by Ben Stokes at gully as Australia slumped to 21 for five. Clarke survived 25 minutes for his 10 runs before he drove loosely at a wide ball from Broad and was well caught above his head by Cook to give Broad his 14th five-wicket haul in tests. Steven Finn bowled Peter Nevill for two before the 29-year-old Broad struck again, producing another perfect delivery which Mitchell Starc diverted into the safe hands of Root for one and Mitchell Johnson fell in identical fashion for 13. Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood added

13 runs for the last wicket before the former edged Broad to Stokes to give the fast bowler test-best figures of 8-15. Adam Lyth’s poor run continued when, on 14, the England batsman edged Starc to wicketkeeper Nevill and left-armer Starc produced a venomous full delivery to trap Bell lbw for one. Root unfurled a couple of sumptuous cover drives as England eased past Australia’s total and he and Cook looked in complete control in a partnership of 62 until the captain, on 43, misjudged another swinging ball from Starc and was adjudged lbw. England took tea on 99 for three and Root and Bairstow turned the screw on Australia in the final session as the crowd basked in sunshine. Bairstow glanced Starc to the boundary to reach his fifty and Root cut part-time medium-pacer Warner for his 17th four to get to his eighth test century, punching the air and raising his bat to all corners of the ground. Bairstow was closing in on his maiden test hundred when he clipped Hazlewood tamely to Rogers at square leg, ending a superb fourth-wicket stand of 173 from 206 balls. Root and nightwatchman Wood (two not out) took England safely through to the close and the hosts will look to extend their lead on Friday after a near-perfect opening day. Scores: England 274 for 4 (Root 124*, Wood 2*) lead Australia 60 (Broad 8-15) by 214 runs.

Washington (AFP) Samantha Stosur, the last woman to beat Serena Williams at the US Open, likes her chances of disrupting the American star ’s calendar Grand Slam bid if she gets the chance. “I’ve always actually quite enjoyed playing Serena. I’ve got a game that disrupts her,” Stosur said Wednesday. “You have to have the game. My game matches up well against Serena. I’ve got the kind of weapons that can bother her.” And the 31-year-old

Australian advises rivals to play their own games and keep the pressure on the world number one if they hope to derail her bid for a fifth Slam title in a row when the Flushing Meadows fortnight begins August 31. “No doubt she is going to be feeling the pressure, as much as you can when you’ve won four Slams in a row and going for a fifth,” Stosur said. “You know she wants to get that calendar Slam. She’s not immune to the nerves and pressure. “You have to go after it.

Digicel host luncheon for successful Special Olympics team Digicel Guyana Inc. yesterday continued to separate itself locally in the areas of corporate and social responsibility when it hosted Guyana’s successful Special Olympics team as it returned with several medals from the World Games in Los Angeles, California. Calvin Thomas was the most successful of the athlete, winning gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m. Annisa Bowman won silver in the female 400m and Kevon Price won silver in the male 200m, while Diandra David won bronze in the both the female 200 and 400 metres to bring Guyana’s total medal haul to six at the event. Minister within the Ministry of Education with the responsibility for sport, Nicolette Henry was present to congratulate the champions on behalf of the Government of Guyana.

“We are incredibly honoured at your desire and courage to make a difference in the world with your talents and on behalf of the Government of Guyana we extend congratulations to you the athletes for your accomplishments,” Henry stated. Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Kelly noted the toughness of winning a medal at any Olympics and congratulated the athletes for their efforts.“This achievement is absolutely marvellous. All four athletes did marvellous, it’s really difficult to win track medals at the Olympics and we at Digicel will like to say thank you for putting Guyana on the map,” Kelly indicated. The athletes and the managing team also received smart phones from the telecommunication giants.

Whatever it is you do, you have got to bring that at the big moments and make it happen.” Coming off a clay-court title at Bad Gastein, second seed Stosur advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA and ATP Washington Open with a 6-1, 7-5 victory Wednesday over American Irina Falconi. Stosur, ranked 21st, won her only Grand Slam title at the 2011 US Open by defeating Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Since then, Williams has been the queen of Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning three US Open titles in a row in a run of taking eight of the past 13 Slam singles trophies. And despite Williams leading their career rivalry 83 (not counting two Stosur wins by walkover) and having won their past four meetings without dropping a set, Stosur takes confidence from a 2-1 record in their Grand Slam meetings, having lost in the fourth round of the 2010 Australian Open but won 62, 6-7 (2/7), 8-6 at the 2010 French Open semi-finals as well as in the US Open final. “Playing her on one of those big stages, you see what the benchmark is and how you have to get about playing it,” Stosur said. “I’ve gone out there and gotten blasted but I also know that on any given day I can go out there and win and that’s quite exciting.” Serena success ‘incredible’ With her Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon triumphs this year, Williams has completed the “Serena Slam” of holding all four trophies at once for the second time in her career, the first time in a run from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open. Joseph Reds Perriera pays tribute to Ron Legall The Guyana cricket fraternity has lost an outstanding scorer and statistician, and made an immense contribution to the broadcasting of cricket in Guyana for close to 40 years. It was a young Ron Legall that developed his early scoring skills while working for the British Guiana Cricket Board at the time, and I can almost see, as I write, Ron sitting along with h i s t h e n m e n t o r, M r Barnwell in the Kenny Wishart stand. His career blossomed with the advent of the Guyana Broadcasting Service (GBS) in October of 1 9 6 8 . A n d i t ’s w e l l documented by Guyanese and Caribbean listeners that it brought cricket coverage to a new level. Anyone who knew Ron Legall well, would know that he was a mild-mannered individual, a gentleman indeed ,who hardly lost his

temper or raised his voice, even in the most arduous of situations. In the early days of GBS, Ron was an important member of the commentary panel, and without him, the level would not have been the same. He worked with a team which included myself, Cecil Thomas, Rocky Mann, Ron Willock, Frank Bettancourt and Stanley Moore. The GBS team later included the world rated Tony Cozier, and the overseas voices of Don Mosley, Chris MartinJenkins, Henry Blofeld, during tours by England, while the voices from Australia were Allen Mcgillvrey, Jim Maxwell and Nevil Oliver. Ron in his early days, used the traditional scoring book before switching to the more modern method used by the BBC scorers. Due to the kind of preparation prior

n a slow track at the National Cricket Centre in Couva, Trinidad, Guyana opened their campaign in the 2015 Regional Women’s Super50 cricket competition yesterday with a five-wicket win against the Northern Windwards. An unbeaten 59 from 93 balls with seven fours from West Indies batter Shemaine Campbelle and a patient 25 from 73 balls from Wicket-Keeper Melanie Henry rallied the Guyanese ladies to 125-5 in 36.overs in reply to the 122-9 from their allotted 50 overs made by Northern Windwards. Medium pacer Akaze Thompson had 3-28 from eight overs and got excellent support from former West Indies leftarm pacer Erva Giddings (2-14 from 5 overs) and debutant off-spinner Mandy Mangru (2-22 from 9 overs). to a match, he was always quick with his stats and had a way of virtually knowing what the commentators would need at the end of an innings or after a brilliant bowling spell. Before the commentary was concluded for the various sessions, the on air commentator will have the figures for the entire session and the number of runs scored between start and lunch, at tea and at close of play. Ron was respected by all the commentators he worked with including both local and international voices. He carried out his duties at a time when there was no Cricinfo or Google, and he

relied a great deal on information from the Cozier cricket annual, his Wisden and his personal stats. Legall was never a selfish individual and reached out and assisted many who were interested in the art of scoring. He also volunteered his time to the Guyana Cricket Board and sat on many committees during the Chetram Singh administration. My one regret is that Ron was never commissioned to write the history of cricket in Guyana to included scores in the Case Cup competitions, the Jones Cup tournament and the performances by Guyanese who played at the

lost a great friend and may he have the recognition he deserves.

DIGICEL HARVARD ACADEMY U-17 TOUR...

Spinners spur Albion to 6-wkt win over Trinis By Sean Devers in Berbice In sultry conditions at the history Albion Community Centre ground in Corentyne Berbice, Albion, led by seven wickets from their spinners Kelvin Umroa and Joshua Haricharran, beat the touring Digicel Harvard Cricket Academy from Trinidad by four wickets on Wednesday in an under-17 encounter. Harvard slipped from 40 without loss to 90 all out in 29.3 overs as only Akeem Sookhoo (19) and Skipper Keon Mason (18) reached double figures on the heavy ground. National under-15 left-arm spinner Kelvin

Umroa snatched 4-10 from eight miserly overs, while off-spinner Joshua Haricharran, who extracted prodigious turn from the slow track, had 3-7 from 3.3 overs for Albion who reached 91-6 from 26.3 overs in reply. Former National U-17 opener Retesh Umroa made a patient 38 as the Harvard spinners made free scoring a difficult task for the lads from Guyana’s second largest County, with Mason, the son of former T&T wicket-Keeper Keno Mason, picking up 2-19 from eight frugal overs while 13-yearold left-arm spinner Sanjay Browne, the son of exJamaican U-19 off-spinner

Harvard’s skipper Keon Mason plays a compact defensive shot during his 40-run stand with Akeem Sookhoo at Albion. Paul Browne, had another impressive spell. After losing to Everest at Camp Road in their opening game in Guyana on Tuesday, the ‘Trinis’ were given a firm foundation, 40 –run opening stand, by Mason and the bespectacled left-hander

Sookhoo against the new ball attack after the visitors won the toss and opted to bat on a straw colored track which assisted the spinners. The burly Mason used his feet to the clever Umroa and was stumped while Sookhoo again looked most accomplished of the batsmen, especially off his legs, but seems to be a very poor judge of running between the wickets. It was not too surprising when Sookhoo turned one straight to short square leg and took off for a suicidal single resulting in Lillo Brandon (2) being run out before Sookhoo failed to beat a throw from mid-off and was run out 12 runs later as the tourists slipped to 583. When Umroa, bowling with immaculate control into the breeze, removed the potentially dangerous big hitting Andel Nicholas (6) at 59-4, another run out and the completion of the demolition job by Umroa and Haricharran ensured the teenagers from Carnival Country never recovered. When the hosts began their reply Adrian Sukwah (2) was needlessly run out

Off-spinner Joshua Haricharran and National U-15 left arm spinner Kelvin Umroa shared 7 wickets between them for Albion. when he lingered out of his crease after assuming the ball had hit the boundary board to leave Albion, the defending BCB U-17 champions, on 6-1. Matthew Hardyal (4) fell at 16-2 but Haricharran and Retesh Umroa carried the score to 47 before Mason, who got bounce and turn from the surface, got rid of Haricharran. Browne then sent back Kevendra Persaud (4) and Mason accounted for Karan Arajpaul (2) and all of a sudden Albion had slumped

to 61-5. However, Joshua Dhanai (17*) and Umroa took their team to within two runs of victory before Umroa slashed pacer Kylon Jacobs to point to throw his wicket away. After the game West Indies Leg Spinner Devendra Bishoo and Guyana player Jonathon Foo spoke to the youngsters. The cricket Academy from the 1,980 Sq Mile twin Island Republic, which produced Brian Lara, will face DCC in their third match today in Queenstown.

the Palma match which will be contested next week.

“The Palma team is a team of 16 so eight shooters

would have completed all the required zeroing and getting themselves in the right shape. What we have to do now on Saturday (tomorrow) is to get the other eight shooters up to a standard that would allow them to compete in the individual championships and then on to the Palma match.” The tour so far Nelson said has been going well and as a team, the shooters have exceeded all his expectations so far. “The togetherness and the desire to help each other and working towards a common goal which is to perform to the very best of our ability. I’m very happy in fact, with all members of this team and how much effort they are putting to make it a solid performance all around.” So far in the NRA US Fullbore National Individual Championships, three West Indians have competed with Guyanese Mahendra Persaud finishing 83rd of 362 shooters from around the world.
