I would like my lovely Bush Lot to be given township status DEAR EDITOR, Bush Lot my beautiful, idyllic, captivating, and ancestral community and is situated in Region # 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) in Guyana. We are advocating with a sizable following that our native village Bush Lot should be given township status and be the focus for economic and industrial development. What government should do is to conduct a feasibility study of the community, to see if the community can achieve an urban status. It is our view that the Bush Lot community can be the engine for mega development in the economic, industrial and agriculture development sectors. This idyllic scenic community is located approximately 56 miles from Georgetown. The over 5,000 community residents are mainly involved in rice production, business and market gardening. RURAL DEVELOPMENT Bush Lot was a little village historically inhabited with a few indentured Indian laborers that bought lands at Bush Lot and built the village, after fulfilling their contract with the Blairmont Sugar Estates Ltd. It was a village filled with houses thatched with coconut branches on roof tops and fastenings made with wattles and painted with mud. Bush Lot started from humble beginnings. Several areas were overgrown with bush and vegetation, but, by the early 1980s, development in the business sector was rapidly becoming visible. More shops and other businesses sprung up as persons invested their hard earned dollars. The evolvement of Bush Lot never paused, hence

promoting the very developed and attractive ‘commercial haven’ we see today. As indicated by villagers, many farmers, through bank loans, savings, and overseas assistance from relatives, rebuilt their other small and disintegrating buildings with sophisticated concrete structure. With agriculture being the main form of employment, some persons invested in the sale of agricultural machinery such a s tractors, plows and spare parts, tires for vehicles etc. This community continues to spiral with economic and social mobility and human trafficking. The layout of this remarkable rural community is marked by a few operating rice mills, posh stores, houses, pharmacies, internet cafés and numerous variety stores which give you the impression of being an urban area. The community enjoys a replica of good infrastructure, proper drainage, excellent lighting and, of course, security for residents. One must visualize that such positive growth have been achieved with time, hard work and little government intervention. Various efforts have moved the progressive residents to focus more strategically towards economic and industrial Development in the future. Bush Lot is now a very bustling village with many thriving businesses and entertainment hot spots, distinctly the opposite of what it used to be many years ago. Plaudits are given to some extent to the PPP/c government that initiated progress for the villagers who increased paddy prices for the rice farmers. This new

wealth provided the impetus for farmers to increase their wealth and to become the ‘noveau riche’ in the community. This increased wealth fuelled the rich middle and upper class to propel a capitalist economy within the community. In the past Bush Lot was an underdeveloped settlement in the early 1980s that was neglected and run down. People lived within marginalization, crying out for governmental assistance to uplift this society that was living in social degradation. It was not until after the 1992 election which swept the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) into office that the village underwent massive economic changes and social progress to some extent. Before that era, the village was lacking established businesses, and access roads and small streets were unpaved. The village at that time had featured muddy dams, which created a problem for farmers in the rainy season, as they tried to access their rice and cash crop cultivations in the backlands. Back in those days there were many hire cars and taxi drivers from this village, but with the constant escalation of modern transportation many people who operated taxis went into other businesses. OCCUPATION OF RESIDENTS Bush Lot is now a very bustling village with many thriving businesses and entertainment hot spots, distinctly the opposite of what it used to be many years ago. Bush Lot moved from a very underdeveloped rural community in the early 1980s to a modern community in 2016. Today, every corner of Bush Lot and both sides of

the road boosts retail and whole sale businesses and food shops owned by the Chinese community. Some persons are employed as mechanic/welders at workshops and worked outside the village at GUYSUCO. Others are content with common trades, such as fishermen who ply their trade within the community and nearby villages. Some do contract work within Region 5 as welders, mechanics, painters and carpenters. Most of the men

performed functions as rice farming and cash crop farmers, fishermen or shop owners. Of course there are poultry farmers who sell to people within the community and neighbouring community as well. Some residents also own fishing boats with which they ply their trade in the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The village boasts of three doctors who work at clinics and as professionals within Reion#5. Employment was also given to residents who normally involved in the mixing of

cement, clay bricks, concrete statues and veranda designs, building concrete fences and bridges as paid laborers. Residents would hardly employ people from outside the community to do cement work and building houses. In some cases people have to be employed from neighboring communities to sow paddy in the rice fields for rice farmers. Presently, there seemed to be a dire need for unskilled workers because of the shortage of unskilled laborers. Chandradat Deonandan

Hopes and expectations of the new municipality of Bartica DEAR EDITOR, The Bartica United Youth Development Group (BUYDG) will like to congratulate Mr. Gifford Marshall, who was the only nominee that was elected Mayor and Ms. Kamal Persaud, who was also the only nominee, duly elected Deputy Mayor the BUYDG also congregate the councilors. The election took place at Bartica Community Centre. For the first time Bartica have a Mayor and Deputy Mayor Bartica recently gain township status. Yesterday the Town Council held its first meeting after the March 18th local government elections. The BUYDG encourages the Mayer, Deputy Mayer and all the councilors to work to the best of their ability in the interest of the residents of Bartica in a productive and non-corrupt manner so that Bartica can be move from where it is to a very high level. Since BUYDG believes that Bartica have a long way to go as it relates to general

development. Bartica/Region 7 should be have been the most developed community/region in Guyana since Bartica/ Region 7 is one of the highest and main tax contributors that contributes 50% of the revenue that goes to the treasury of Guyana. As such money should not just generate and produce from the resources of Region 7 and go out of Bartica/ Region 7 to develop the other Regions in Guyana but a lot of the money generated should be use to enhance grater development in Bartica/ Region 7. The Residents of Bartica had voted on March 18 th 2016 for general development, transparency and proper accountability etc. The APNU+AFC Government just as it did in the General and

Regional Elections, it again won the majority vote cast by the residents on March 18th local government elections as such the BUYDG will be holding all of the persons elected accountable for any further lack of development in the Bartica/Region7. Not forgetting that the same persons elected took oath to serve the resident of Bartica. The BUYDG hopes that the Mayor’s and Councilors will address concerns of the residents on the spot and will not operate by a remote control that may be used by central government since they won the majority seats of the local government election under the umbrella of APUN+AFC Government. Thank you in anticipation for publishing the BUYDG letter. Micah Williams General President

Charlestown executions…

Did anyone pay to have Lance Corporal Payne executed? There seems to be some confusion over who paid to have Army Lance Corporal, Kevon Payne executed last Tuesday. While investigators are convinced that they have the shooter in custody, they have a lot more work to do in order to figure out who really wanted Payne dead. They are hoping to solve this puzzle by today, once the result of tests conducted on the hands of at least two suspects for traces of gunpowder residue, become available. Ranks are convinced that once they are equipped with the results, persons will start talking. Payne’s death occurred two days before another Charlestown resident, Gladstone Taylor was also executed, a short distance from where the soldier was gunned down. Investigators believe that the two killings are related. There are four persons in custody for the two execution-style killings which occurred in a matter of three days in Charlestown. Lance Corporal Kevon Payne was gunned down in front of his mother ’s Charlestown home last Tuesday. The alleged shooter and an Albouystown drug dealer, who is said to have ordered the hit, are in custody. The second execution was that of Taylor, a father of five, who was shot dead last Friday. Payne’s brother, Vellone Thorne and one of his friends are in custody for Taylor’s killing. There are eyewitnesses who claimed to

Executed: Kevon Payne have seen Thorne shooting the father of five at a liming spot in Charlestown. POSSIBLE LINK Detectives are working on a number of theories and are hoping to solve these two execution-style killings soon. One theory is that Taylor had ordered the hit on the soldier. According to information received, Vellone Thorne, who was described by villagers as a “trouble maker” would usually get into problem with a number of persons in both Albouystown and Charlestown and would then complain to his soldier brother, Payne. Reports are that the soldier would then confront these persons and even threaten them. “This soldier boy is na no easy person. His brother does pick trouble with everybody and then he (soldier) does come and bad up to people because he is a soldier so he feel he big and bad,” a resident said. Investigators are hearing that Taylor, who is considered

the ‘Godfather’ for the area, got tired of the brothers’ drama and paid to have the soldier killed. It is believed that Vellone Thorne found out about the hit and decided to take matters into his own hands after his brother was killed. But there is also a theory that the same Albouystown drug dealer who is in custody ordered the hit and not Taylor. According to information received, a few days before his brother was killed, Vellone Thorne was involved in an argument with a drug dealer, who is known to the family. The argument turned physical and the drug dealer reportedly later threatened to “finish” Thorne. Kaieteur News was told that the drug dealer boasted that he has $10M and was willing to pay “the experts” to take out Thorne because he was too “disrespectful.” There are reports that when Kevon Payne heard about the incident involving his sibling, he asked for time

off from his work last Tuesday to go home and sort things out. “Payne come like big boy to confront the man (drug dealer) and he even jump over the man fence. He tell the man that if he touch his brother, he gone gat to live in the sky,” the resident said. Later that same day, the soldier was executed in front of his home. Investigators now have to figure out if anyone was paid to have the soldier killed and how Taylor’s killing is linked to Payne’s death. Meanwhile, Thorne’s father, Rudolph Thorne, in an interview said that his son could not have killed Taylor, since he was at a wake at their home for his dead brother. This is despite the fact that three eyewitnesses have told police that they saw Vellone Thorne shoot Taylor. “My son has no reason to kill Tuffy. The police already arrested the people who killed my stepson, so why Vellone would kill Tuffy?”

Executed: Gladstone Taylor However, the older Thorne did admit that they had initially blamed a family member of Taylor’s for his stepson’s death. According to Rudolph Thorne, when O’Riley Small was gunned down on March 19, last, a nephew of Taylor was telling villagers that it was Vellone Thorne who had killed the former robbery accused. Words got back to Vellone Thorne and he allegedly

confronted Taylor’s nephew. “My son confronted the nephew and later that day he (the nephew) came to me and tell me that Vellone said that he was telling people that Vellone killed O’Riley. I told him not to worry with that because people already get charged,” Thorne said. He added that later that day, his stepson, Payne, was executed. “The same day my son and this boy had a confrontation, my stepson was killed, so we thought that it was him but then we later learnt that it was the drug dealer who organized the hit,” the older Thorne said. Two of Taylor’s sons, Keron and Clive, were charged for the September 4, 2015 murder of East Ruimveldt resident, Senesie Lewis, 22, of Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt. Lewis was gunned down in front of the popular Ghetto Flex nightspot, located at James and Albouys Streets, Albouystown. They are presently awaiting trial.

37 Indigenous Communities to Benefit from Donation of Clothing The Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Guyana Foundation inked an agreement which will see thirty seven communities in Regions One, Two, Seven, Eight and Nine benefiting from more than twenty eight thousand pieces of clothing. The Foundation has recently received a donation of a 20 ft. container of clothing from the Maria Milagrosa Foundation in El Salvador which has been designated to enhance the social and economic well-being of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples. At the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the Ministry’s Thomas and Quamina Streets location

earlier on Friday, April 1, 2016, Founder of the Guyana Foundation Supriya SinghBodden said her organization is honored to provide support to the Ministry. Mrs. Singh-Bodden however, posited this is the beginning of a fruitful partnership and requested that the Ministry provide a wish-list on other areas for potential collaboration. She indicated that the Foundation has a keen interest in marketing both traditional and non-traditional products and services that are and can be produced by indigenous communities, therefore enabling them to become economically viable. Specific interest was placed on indigenous craft, music, films, herbal products among others. Vice President and Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Sydney Allicock before inking the document indicated that the

Founder of the Guyana Foundation Supriya Singh-Bodden and Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Sydney Allicock. interest shown by the Guyana Foundation is very encouraging given the fact that resources in indigenous communities continue to make an epochal contribution not only at home but also internationally. The communities to benefit are Baramita, Kariako, Chinese Landing, Waikarebi, Assakata, Tobago, Khan Hill, Imbotario, Powaikuri, Kawatta, Haimruni, 7 Miles Branch Road, Bamboo Landing and Warapoka in Region One, Mashabo, Wakapow, Capoey, Swan, Waiakabra and Wax creek in

Region Two. The communities to benefit in Region Seven are Philipai, Chinoweing, Dagg Point, Wayalagene, Amakokopai, Emokeing and Karatabo, while Kaibarupai, Waipa and Pennak will benefit in Region Eight. Parabara, Masekenari, Crash Water, Rewa, Tiger Pond, Towshida and Bina Hill Institute complete the quota for Region Nine. It was agreed that the Ministry will be responsible for all expenses associated with uplifting, sorting, and (Continued on page 24)

Brazil’s president to play last cards in impeachment fight Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - It’s make or break time for leftist Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s attempt to avoid impeachment — and for Brazil itself. A months-long political crisis wrapped in a gargantuan corruption scandal and the worst recession for a generation starts coming to a boil this week. Today, Rousseff ’s solicitor general, Jose Eduardo Cardozo, will make final arguments before a congressional impeachment commission, which then has five sessions to debate before voting. Underling the urgency of the process, that vote is scheduled for April 11 and the commission chairman wants all 65 members seated before dawn so that they can finish in the same day. Shortly after — April 17 is the latest plan — the commission’s non-binding recommendation goes to the lower house, which will either scrap impeachment or send Rousseff to trial in the upper house. Two thirds of the chamber, or 342 votes, are needed to move the case to the Senate, where legislators are considered likely to follow the

lower house’s lead. This means Rousseff, who lost her main coalition partner to the opposition last week, might have just days to lobby for support and save her presidency. Following intense behindthe-scenes dealing, she is soon expected to announce a series of ministerial posts and other government jobs given in reward for congressional support. She could also find out this week if the Supreme Court agrees to let heavy-hitting but controversial expresident, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, join her cabinet. Lula is crucial to rallying the leftist base and negotiating an antiimpeachment coalition, but has been barred because he is accused in a case connected to a huge embezzlement and bribery scandal at state oil company Petrobras. The court decision should come by Thursday, Lula says. “This week will be the week where both sides are playing all their cards pretty hard and making their moves,” Gabriel Petrus, a partner at the political consultancy Barral M Jorge Associates, told AFP. “The following week we’ll

Dilma Rousseff have the final result of this battle.” Rousseff is accused of illegally manipulating government accounts, a charge that many experts consider to be relatively light for impeachment. However, the one-time Marxist guerrilla during Brazil’s military dictatorship is also taking fire for the brutal recession and the Petrobras corruption scandal. With only 10 percent government approval ratings and inability to pass legislation in Congress, Rousseff already looks powerless. But those working to oust Rousseff themselves face

serious allegations. Rousseff ’s vicepresident-turned- opponent, Michel Temer, has been linked — though not charged — as a participant in the Petrobras scandal. If Rousseff goes, he’d become president. The speaker of the lower house, Eduardo Cunha, who has spearheaded the effort against Rousseff, was charged by prosecutors last year with taking millions of dollars in bribes in the scandal and hiding the money in Switzerland. Huge opposition rallies and smaller but still significant pro-Rousseff rallies are now a regular feature across Latin America’s biggest country, accentuating a divide that some fear could turn violent. At a demonstration Saturday in the leftist northeast of Brazil, Lula said he had “never seen such a climate of hate.” The authorities said late Friday that they are looking into online death threats against Rousseff ’s spokesman, Edinho Silva, who earlier expressed worries that the increasingly nasty row could produce its “first corpse.” With Rousseff claiming she is victim of a coup and

the opposition saying that the future of the country is at stake, compromise appears finished. Reflecting that spirit, Cunha is planning to break the tradition of house speakers not participating in votes of this kind, Folha newspaper reported Sunday. In addition, he plans to move the voting day to Sunday, April 17, making it easier for the opposition to rally outside Congress, the report said. He also will insist on an open vote to make it harder for deputies trying to hedge their bets in a secret ballot or — as Rousseff’s camp is

trying to persuade many to do — abstaining or not showing up. “To me, not being present is the same thing as voting (no),” O Tempo newspaper quoted Cunha saying Saturday. “A political war will be waged and the punishment for those who don’t show up will be political.” Yet another trick Cunha plans, Folha reported, is to swing momentum against Rousseff by starting the voting with deputies from the right-leaning south of Brazil, rather than alternate between north and south, as would be the norm.

Yemeni president sacks prime minister, South African parliament to debate Zuma impeachment motion appoints new senior team - state media Al Jazeera - National Assembly set to debate on Tuesday an oppositiontabled motion to impeach President Zuma over spending scandal. South Africa’s parliament will debate a motion to impeach President Jacob Zuma, the National Assembly Speaker said yesterday days after the country’s top court ruled the president had violated the constitution. “The debate on that motion has been scheduled for tomorrow afternoon,” Baleka Mbete said a day after anti-apartheid veteran Ahmed Kathrada joined opposition leaders in calling for Zuma’s resignation. The South African president had ignored orders from the public prosecutor to

return some of the $16m in state funds that he used to renovate his mansion in Nkandla situated in KwaZulu-Natal province. On Friday, 73-year-old Zuma in a televised address apologised and said he would pay back some of the money, as ordered. He said that he never knowingly or deliberately set out to violate the constitution. Mmusi Maimane, leader of the opposition party Democratic Alliance, tabled the motion to impeach Zuma, who is facing arguably the biggest scandal since he took office in 2009. He has fended off accusations of corruption, influence peddling and rape in the past. The impeachment proceedings are unlikely to be

Jacob Zuma successful because of the Africa National Congress party’s strong majority in parliament, but the judicial rebuke may strengthen antiZuma factions within the ruling party to press for change. The unanimous ruling by the 11-judge constitutional court also criticised parliament for passing a resolution that purported to nullify Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s findings on Zuma’s private residence. “The judgement makes sound, balanced and critical findings,” Speaker Mbete told journalists.

R e u t e r s - Ye m e n i President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi appointed a new vice-president and prime minister yesterday, pro-Hadi state media reported, sacking prime minister Khaled Bahah in a major shake-up ahead of peace talks later this month. Yemen has been in a civil war for more than a y e a r b e t w e e n H a d i ’s supporters and the Iranallied Houthi group that has sucked in a Saudi-led alliance and caused a major humanitarian crisis in one of the poorest countries in the Middle East. Yemen’s state television reported that Hadi had appointed Ali Mohsen AlA h m a r, a p o l i t i c a l l y powerful army general who split violently with former Ye m e n i p r e s i d e n t A l i Abdullah Saleh in 2011, as the new vice-president. The president also appointed Ahmed Obeid bin Daghr, a former official in Saleh’s General People’s Congress party before joining Hadi’s camp, to become new prime minister. Bahah, who held both posts before he was sacked, had been named as an advisor to Hadi.

A Yemeni government official said the shake-up could undermine U.N.sponsored peace talks, scheduled to start in Kuwait on April 18. “Bahah was in favour of a political settlement and the appointment of Ali Mohsen is a victory for the hardline wing,” the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Saudi Arabia has signalled it was in favour of a peaceful settlement in Yemen, concluding two prisoner swap deals with the Houthi group since last month. The two sides have confirmed a truce starting at midnight on April 10

Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi ahead of the peace talks, planned to follow a week later.

Islamic State executes 15 of its own near Raqqa, Syria – monitor Reuters - Islamic State has killed 15 of its members in the largest execution of the militant group’s security services so far in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said yesterday. The killings followed the arrest of 35 members on Saturday in Raqqa, according to Britain-based Observatory, which monitors the five-year-old Syrian conflict through a network of sources on the ground. The members were killed in connection with the assassination of senior Islamic State figure Abu Hija alTunisi, who died on Wednesday in an air strike, the Observatory said. Reuters could not independently verify this information.

THE PUBLIC HAS A RIGHT TO KNOW! Persons who assisted APNU-AFC during the 2015 elections campaign have been rewarded with ‘honorific’ appointments. A businessman was appointed as Ministerial Advisor of Business. Supporters of the AFC were handed titles as Advisors of Diaspora Affairs. APNU followed the AFC lead and made similar appointments. If you ask the average man what they thought was responsible the most of the change in government in May of 2015, they will tell you

that it was Kaieteur News which made the greatest contribution. Kaieteur News was responsible for exposing the corruption, nepotism and cronyism under the former regime and as a result Guyanese saw the truth about the PPPC government and voted for change. Kaieteur News did not set out to create regime change. It did what it has been doing since its formation, exposing the wrongdoing it the society. The people of this country know that it was Kaieteur News and especially Glenn

Lall which were responsible for exposing the dirtiness of the PPP. For exposing the wrongs in our society and for bringing the truth to the Guyanese people, Kaieteur News and its Publisher have paid a huge price. On August 8, 2006, six Kaieteur News employees were placed to lie on the floor of the newspaper’s printing department and they were shot in their heads. All six died. After that attack, the publisher of Kaieteur News increased the security of his

staff. He increased their protection as well as that of his own security. But he did not relent in his reporting on the wrongdoings in the country. The PPP did not like that. As a result, political instructions were given to the former Commissioner of the Guyana Police Force to take away the security weapons which were used as protection for the staff of this newspaper. No reason was given but Kaieteur News found out that the instruction came from high up, very high up in the government. Later, when Kaieteur News began to expose the rotten deals of the PPP and ran a series entitled the ‘Heist of Guyana’, the PPP moved to silence him. The foreign embassies in Guyana were advised about a plot to hurt Lall. He was later placed on trumped up charges as part of the political victimization against his company. A recording surfaced about what could happen to the newspaper. The new APNU+AFC government has given out ‘honorific’ awards to persons who supported the coalition in its quest for power. They have honoured those who they said helped them. One letter writer has however pointed out that it is not just the prominent persons who helped the coalition who should be honoured but also

the ordinary citizen. Kaieteur News and its publisher were not looking for any honorific appointments. It however wanted the wrong that was done against this newspaper to be put right. It desired to see the order for the seizure of the weapons used to protect the staff to be rescinded. Do you know what Lall told his staff this week at a meeting? He told them that despite speaking on two occasions to one Minister and despite speaking on one occasion to another, nothing has been done. The new coalition government cannot as yet, ten months since it came to power, find the time to return the weapons that were used for the security of the staff of Kaieteur News and which were seized by Henry Greene. But they found the time to make someone an Advisor on Business. The Guyanese public must judge for themselves the persons to whom the new

government is handing out honorific awards. It must ask itself why the protection of the staff of this newspaper has been treated as a secondary issue. This newspaper will not compromise what it stands for. It exposed wrongdoing under the PPP and it will do the same for the new government. There are no sacred cows. Only the people are sacred and they have a right to know the facts. The public is entitled to know what is going on in Guyana. It is entitled to know about the associations of the new rulers of Guyana. It deserves to know the persons who were given honorific appointments. It deserves to know about the travel of government officials and who they took on those trips.

Spurned man shoots ex-lover and male friend Police in the mining town of Linden are on a manhunt for a man who shot his exlover and her male friend early yesterday morning. Several residents of Half Mile, Wismar, Linden were rudely awakened from their slumber yesterday morning by the sound of gunshots shattering the early morning serenity. In its wake, 40 year old Sherwin Hughes, of 138 Blue Berry Hill, and 41-year old Simone Belle, of 102 Half Mile who were both shot by a marauding gunman, had to be rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex for urgent medical attention. They were later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, for further treatment. According to reports, the

suspect who previously shared a relationship with Belle, had been observed hiding out in the woman’s yard earlier in the night. “This is a domestic dispute gone too far. He (shooter) used to live with the woman, but she put he out, and like he ain’t want tek lef. People seh he beat she up, and she been by some friends and is carry they de carrying she home, when de shooting up tek place,” a source close to Belle told this newspaper. Police in a statement said that their investigations so far have revealed that Simone Belle had just arrived home in a vehicle driven by Sherwin Hughes, when shots were discharged at them by a man who is reported to have

shared a relationship with Belle and which was ended several months ago. According to reports, as Belle and Hughes pulled up to her house, persons who had seen the suspect lurking in the dark, shouted to the driver, “Drive, don’t stop!” “So dey drive past and de going up the road past the house but the gunman, run behind the vehicle shooting at dem. So the driver jump out and run, with the gunman in hot pursuit,” another source said. One resident noted, “I dive for cover, lying prostrate on the floor until all the commotion died down. I don’t think that anyone ventured to peek out at that point.” A relative of Sherwin

Body of pensioner with wound to head found on Coldingen roadway - Police suspect he was robbed and killed Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 64year-old pensioner, whose body with a wound to the head was discovered around 06:30 hrs yesterday. The body of Roger Manikam of Lot 237 Section B Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was found on the roadway along the Coldingen Railway Embankment. Investigators believed that the father of two was killed during a robbery. They are basing their theory on the fact that the man’s pockets were emptied and “turned inside-out.” There are reports that Manikam was carrying more than $100,000 on him when he met with his tragic death. At his home yesterday, his daughter, Naline Manikam said that she last saw her father around 20:00 hrs on Saturday before she and her sibling retired to bed. “I can’t really say what happened but when we got up the morning, we didn’t see him and that was unusual because he would normally be at home around that time. This was around 08:30 (hrs),” the young woman claimed. She said that she made a few calls to persons nearby as well as family members to find out whether anyone had heard from her father but she got no information. Suspecting that something was definitely wrong, the young woman said that she went to the Vigilance Police Station to report him missing—at this point she had no idea that a body had been found not far from their home. “I went to the station and

DEAD: Roger Manikam they ask me to describe him and then I come home. When I reach home, they called me and asked if I can go back. When I went, they ask me about his clothes and tell me to describe him and then they say that they found a body matching the description,” the younger Manikam said. She added that she was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour where she positively

identified her father. Manikam said that she has no idea how her father left home but suggested that he might have left in a car to go somewhere. She could not say where he went. “He did not know anyone around that area where his body was found and he doesn’t usually go around that area so we don’t know what really happened,” she claimed. According to the daughter, he had over $100,000 on him at the time of his death. “He doesn’t leave his money at home. He would usually walk with it and the police said that he didn’t have any money or anything else when they found him.” The daughter too believed that her father was robbed and killed. “He would usually leave home without telling anyone but he does always come home. He never sleeps out,” the woman said. Investigations are ongoing.

Hughes said that the wounded man later underwent emergency surgery at the Georgetown Hospital, where several bullets were reportedly removed from his body.

Hughes was reportedly shot in the back, as he fled the scene. He was also shot in the hand and leg, according to reports. This newspaper was unable to ascertain the

wounded woman’s condition, since she was still undergoing surgery when this newspaper visited the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation yesterday afternoon.

GEA Forensic audit reveals…

Two Brothers service stations operating without licence It appears that the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) adopted a “free-for-all’ approach in its management of the billion dollar sector as it allowed a chain of gas station services to operate without licences. This is according to the recently published forensic audit report on the GEA which was prepared by Nigel Hinds Financial Services. The forensic auditing team found that GEA issued invoices for licence fees to three of the seven service stations belonging to Two Brothers Corp. But based on its examination of GEA records, the auditors revealed that there was no evidence that any of the three service stations were issued retail licences for the period under review. The auditors were basically facing a situation where GEA gave the impression that Two Brothers paid for the licences but the

company never got them. The team concluded in no uncertain terms that none of the Two Brothers Corp. Service Stations were operating with retail licences for the review period. The auditors even elaborated a bit more on this front. They said that based on the documents obtained and examined from the Two Brothers Group of Companies and/or any of its Directors, no evidence could be found that Two Brothers Corp. had ever been issued with any licence, with the exception of two. One was a Bulk transportation licence issued to Javed R. Ali, a Director of Two Brothers Corp. for vehicles GHH 5738 and GHH 6682. The other was a retail licence issued to Two Brothers Variety Shop located in Kumaka Water Front, North West District. Additionally, the forensic auditors discovered that GEA’s Chief Executive Officer,

Two Brothers Gas Station

Dr. Mahender Sharma had issued a letter dated August 17, 2015, captioned “Petroleum License Fees” to Mr. Javed Ali, along with invoice # 1507/002 for retail

licensing fees. The total amount of that invoice was $1.4M. But what baffled the auditing team was the fact that not a single shred of

evidence could be found to prove that Two Brothers Corp. paid the invoiced amount as of October 26, 2015. The auditors stressed

that Two Brothers Services Stations should not be allowed to operate without GEA retail licences. They recommended that this be corrected.

REEVES, RAY AND THE JUKEBOX We would go into Maharaj Snackette or Bar in Siparia, the town in the deep south of Trinidad in which I grew up, and invariably on a Friday night when the oilfield workers got paid there would be at least one man drinking straight Puncheon or Overproof rum on a stool by himself, tears in his eyes, head bowed in anguish, playing the Jim Reeves song, “He’ll have to go”. I really cannot count how many times I heard, “Put your sweet lips, a little closer, to the phone/ Let’s pretend, that we’re together, all alone/ I’ll tell the man, to turn the juke box, way down low/ And you can tell, your friend there with you, he’ll have to go.” Two things about scenes like that stand out in my memory, maybe three. First, there were only three phones in Siparia and none was owned by any of the men whose money was in the jukebox. Second, that was one jukebox which could not be turned down low or lower. It was always in excessively loud mode and Jim Reeves was forever in good voice. If there was a third it was that I never saw any women in there or any other place behaving the same way or displaying similar signs of what is called “Jilted Lover Syndrome”. The jukebox had “Hit The Road Jack” but it was not popular except for its beat, not its lyrics. Fredrick Newman MD, writing in Psychology Today says that what jilted people feel is chagrin which, according to Webster’s dictionary, ‘is disquietude of mind caused by humiliation, disappointment or failure’.” In Trinidad, we call this feeling or state of mind “Tabanca”. In fact, tabanca or chagrin aptly describes the behavior of men who are “cuckolded” or, as we say, “horned”, “get butt” or, in Guyana, “get blow”. Most times, as in our case where we generally laughed at the sufferer, the “horner-man” was the hero or

“cock-of-the-walk” and the poor, suffering cuckold was an object of derision. The fact is that not everyone has the savoir faire or plain stupidity of the person in the calypso who walked in, saw his wife with another man, and (as the calypso goes) this was his reaction to questions about what he did, “You beat up your wife?/ I say ‘Wuss dan dat’/ You stab she with knife?/ I say, ‘Wuss dan dat’/ Well I call the mister by name/ Out de light in he face and I make him shame.” Unfortunately, this is not a normal reaction although one of my best friends, who is still alive so I can’t call names, found his girlfriend in the arms of another man and totally despondent and disillusioned, he climbed a guava tree and begged us to “stone” him- which we duly did until he lost his temper after a particularly large ripe guava splattered on his capacious forehead. Sometimes friends stir up the pot a bit and make the situation worse. There is a story about a soldier away in Iraq and his girlfriend, who was staying with her sister and brother-inlaw, kept sending him pictures of the three of them enjoying themselves in places like Las Vegas, on the beach and in nightclubs. He was so proud of her he showed the pictures to his buddies until one asked, “So who’s taking the photos?” Thinking about it, tabanca can also be the result of pining for a lost or distant love and is generally compounded by, or interpreted as, rejection. Men imagine and conceive all kinds of worst-case scenarios involving their distant or separated spouses and girlfriends. This explains the immense popularity in those days of the song “I wonder who’s kissing her now”, especially the Ray Charles version with its closing lines, “I wonder if she ever tells him of me/ I wonder, I wonder,

pretty baby how I wonder/ I wonder who’s kissing you now.” Although not as big as Jim Reeves in the tabanca world, Ray Charles also scored big with his “Drown In My Own Tears” which starts with, “It brings a tear/ Into my eyes/ When I begin/ To realize/ I’ve cried so much/ Since you’ve been gone /I guess I’ll drown in my own tears.” One of my friends called me a few days ago and said, “You see I always tell you tabanca could cause man to dead? Look ah feller hijack a plane because of tabanca!” Media reports verified my friend’s version and diagnosis. An EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to land in Cyprus by a man with what authorities said was a fake suicide belt, who was arrested after giving himself up. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said the man seemed to have a personal motive and the incident was “not related to terrorism”. Cyprus state TV said the hijacker wanted to contact his ex-wife, who is Greek-Cypriot. Witnesses said that the man threw a letter, written in Arabic, on the apron at Cyprus’s Larnaca airport and asked that it be delivered to his ex-wife who lives in that city. It is a pity that Maharaj, his snackette and especially his jukebox are now no more because there are so many candidates these days that he would have been forced to expand the premises and buy a few more jukeboxes. For example, a young doctor says he was ‘stabbed in the back’ by his long-time girlfriend, who has left him for the 79year-old Formula 1 tycoon Bernie Ecclestone. The 6ft 3in physician says he was stunned when he learned of the affair through newspaper reports. ‘That just does not happen. The guy is almost 80, he is about 5ft tall. How can that be? It’s a joke, it’s unbelievable,’ he said. There

are many cases of men and women posting nude or sexscenes in the social media featuring the partners who jilted them. There was one in Trinidad recently involving cricketer Lendl Simmons and a young woman. Britain’s “Mail Online” featured a story captioned “Ketchup on the walls, furniture destroyed and clothes ripped: Pregnant

woman’s flat wrecked by jilted boyfriend wh o c a u s e d £8,000 of damage after she said she didn’t love him anymore.” One that caught my attention was from Jamaica and was headlined, “Jilted lover bites woman for sex.” As I told my friend, “I’ve heard of love-bites

before but this is definitely ridiculous.” His reply was, “Dey don’t have jukebox in Jamaica?” *Tony Deyal was last seen saying that if you have serious tabanca and there is no jukebox around the best solution is to just chagrin and bear it.

The Entitlement Trap DEAR EDITOR, The economic tragedies that are currently unfolding in our two largest neighbours, Brazil and Venezuela are all too reminiscent of the 70’s and 80’s era in Guyana. Socialist governments in both of our neighbouring countries have catered shamelessly to their constituents at the expense of the productive sectors of their economies. Rather than working hard to encourage growth in their economies, they took the easy route by spending recklessly on entitlement programs paid for by the high price of oil.

With falling oil prices, they are now left with an enlarged entitlement burden and a shrinking economic pie. Venezuela is at the end stage of this entitlement trap with food lines, endemic shortages of drugs and a despondent and desperate population. Brazil is in an economic freefall. Its economy has shrunk 3.5% last year and is expected to shrink 4% this year. It is currently loosing 150,000 jobs per month! Nearly 75% of its budget is earmarked for welfare and

entitlement expenditures and with a further 25% for interest payments on debts (rated junk status), there is little left over for development. The dreaded IMF beckons. Guyana has been in that dark corner before. We should have learned our lessons. We should put a premium on and incentivized economic activities that generate foreign exchanges for in the end, these pay the bills. And we should never rob Peter to pay Paul for this is the surest and shortest route back to that dark corner. Mohabir Ramjeesingh

I don’t expect her grammar to be perfect but must be proper DEAR EDITOR, Grammar. Some of us love it, some of us hate it. The rules of the English Language are brimming with intricacies, inconsistencies, and obscurities, and therefore it is critical that politicians, who are public speakers, master the technicalities of our native language and not get confused with their homonyms and mixed up with their pronouns. Watching the television interview done by the new Mayor of Georgetown, after their first meeting concluded, I must admit disappointment with her lack of fluency and the fact that her grammar was really far from flawless. It is simply impossible to become a great leader without being a great communicator. From our earliest days in the classroom we are

trained to focus on enunciation, vocabulary, presence, delivery, grammar, syntax and the like. While I don’t mean to belittle Her Worship, these things are important to learn. The ability to use the Queen’s English separates the truly great communicators from those who muddle through their interactions with others. As Mayor she will be required to spend the overwhelming majority of her time each day in some type of an interpersonal situation. Effective communication is an essential component of political and professional success, whether it is at the interpersonal, inter-group, intra-group, organizational, or international level. The best communicators are great listeners and astute in their observations. Sean Moniz

A moving appreciation of Haslyn Parris DEAR EDITOR, This past week several of my fellow Buxtonions returned to the Ancestors. As the Annandale Brethren and Sisterin would say: Congo Creole/See them ah go Way/ One by One.” I remember all of them, but I want to say a word about the two public ones. Clyde Roopchand taught me in Common Entrance class at the then St Anthony’s Roman Catholic School, now Friendship Primary. We learned the force of discipline and the importance of education from him and most importantly he taught us to love and cherish community. Had he remained a teacher, he would have been an equally towering a force. His abiding interest in uplifting the people of Buxton never waned. Our paths didn’t cross much after I left primary school but whenever we met we remembered the common root—the teacher student relationship survived the passage of time. Our last meeting was last August when we bumped

into each other in Minister Winston Jordan’s office. I was glad to see my old teacher again and he excitedly declared to the Minister that I was his student; that he helped to shape who I have become. I was humbled. He asked me to accompany him to his office where we talked for the next half hour about how to reignite educational excellence and Skills Acquisition in Buxton. Some of our shared ideas may have since been initiated in the village. Sirroop, as we schoolchildren nicknamed him, was one of our cherished gifts to Guyana. When Vibert Cambridge texted me on Monday to ask if Haslyn Parris had died, I had not heard the news. I would later confirm the sad news after a few calls to Buxton. Even as a little child I had heard the name mentioned as a “bright boy.” I came to know Haslyn better when he returned to Buxton to live. Our conversations were short but

always ended with a hard question from him that set my head spinning. Our last face to face meeting was also last August when he attended one of our Emancipation Forums in Buxton. We were elated that he was there, largely because he did not participate much in Village Politics. He spoke at the forum and challenged us to think about the problematics of Ethnic and Civic identities and the implications for Guyana. I told him that we would use his skills and experience more in the village and he said that his support was guaranteed. I would encounter him for the last time a few weeks ago when I was invited to share my thoughts on Constitutional Reform with the Task Force of which he was a member. He had become of our foremost constitutionalists, despite the fact that he was not a formally trained lawyer. He was to the very end one of our most brilliant minds. David Hinds

I plea for justice for the dismissed NBS managers DEAR EDITOR, Concerning your April 1st report on the dismissed NBS Managers, I am shocked that this evil injustice continues despite the Ombudsman’s findings since 2014. In addition to the findings of the courts where the matter was dismissed after no evidence whatsoever was provided against them by the DPP who had said she had overwhelming and compelling evidence when they were charged, and they were cleared of all charges.

I recall during the APNU/ AFC campaign there were many posters with Mr. Nagamootoo’s photo stating that the Rule of Law must be respected so far no such thing have taken place. As an overseas Guyanese I was hoping like all Guyanese both at home & abroad that this change in government would bring some justice for the people of Guyana. Here is Toronto, an Asian woman has sued the Bank of Canada for lending money that does not

exist and. The DPP and others identified by the Ombudsman blatantly disrespected the Rule of Law, so why no action by this Government? It is time the perpetrators of this heinous crime be investigated further and appropriate action taken. It is time these managers be compensated, even though the money that will be paid to them can never undo the damages that were meted out to them and their families. Derek Drakes

I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS MAN, OSCAR CLARK DEAR EDITOR, It was with utter disillusionment I watched an interview being given by Oscar Clarke to the Press after the new or not so new Georgetown City Council was sworn in. My first disenchantment was due to the fact that he was back in the Council after all these years and not just back in the Council, but once more in the Finance Committee along with one of his cohorts who was in the same committee before, and now holding the very principal role as the Finance Chairman. My second dissatisfaction came with his very sardonic response to a question from the reporter about the essential need for the urgent conducting of a comprehensive forensic audit of the entire Georgetown Municipality. He intimated that there was hardly a need for such, and that the Council was already carrying out its own audit. Just in case Mr. Clarke and his new Finance Committee does not get it, the citizenry from their public outcry are not interested in a superficial, in-house sham of an inspection. Any such attempt to self-police would be like putting the proverbial cat to watch milk. What is needed is an all-inclusive, forensic financial and human resource audit to be effected by a competent and qualified external agency. Just as Mr. Clarke’s party has commissioned a series of rigorous audits on state agencies, national projects and funds which were deemed to be tainted by some form of corruption, there is need for a serious audit of the Georgetown City Council to be effected

by special teams comprised of highly qualified and competent officials, skilled in these sorts of exercises. These recent audits which have purportedly found reckless wastage at the Government Information Agency, breaches of protocols and the absence of proper procurement procedures at GuyOil, and the astonishing scales of corruption within the departments of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) would be dwarfed by what goes on at City Hall in terms of both structural and nonstructural corruption, including graft with well known acts of bribery, illicit kickbacks, embezzlement, and theft of public funds , nepotism with the Council being ‘a big family affair’, and the ostensible expenditure, which is actually wasteful and directed toward private benefits. My third discontent with Mr. Clarke during the interview, was his display of conceit and disregard for the protesting workers whom he claimed not know, and to be uninformed of their issues. It was Clarke’s duty to enquire from the workers of the nature of their problems and to summon the Council’s Chief Financial and Administrative Officers to be briefed and to have the matter resolved. This course of action would be in keeping with the declaration by the Minister of Communities when he noted at the very swearing of the Councillors, that their new posts presented an opportunity for them to serve the residents of their respective constituencies as well as the City of Georgetown. Amber Valentine

At the new City Council, the future doesn’t look good DEAR EDITOR, As I sat in the ornate chamber of City Hall last Friday to witness the changing of the guard, well at least for some persons around the horse shoe table, after twenty two years of the directorate of the Georgetown Municipality, I could not help but be tickled at the fact that the more things change at the Council, the more they stay the same. Here we had the chamber magnificently decorated for the occasion, and the staff in attendance dressed to the nines, rather than the casual dress down attire which is

usually worn on Fridays, and much pomp and ceremony characterizing the installation of the new councilors, but paradoxically just outside this chamber there was a massive protest being staged by contracted workers who were not paid for services provided. How déjà vu is this situation for the workers and mortifying it must have been for the new Councillors to be confronted with this ‘Tune the Old Cow Died of’at City Hall. Something like this was bound to happen with the reckless fiscal management or complete lack of, at City Hall. It was just that the new

Councillors were not expected to get a taste of the mismanagement so soon. I was also tickled pink at the haste in which the veteran Councillors or the ‘Old Guard’ hastened to stake their claims to the key positions of City Hall ensuring that the newcomers knew their places. Is this the change that everyone was expecting? Can we look ahead to to see monumental improvements within our capital? Here we have another clear example that Guyana’s politics has become distinctively winnertake-all. Debra Gibson

An investigation into the documents by more than 100 media groups, described as one of the largest such probes in history, revealed the hidden offshore dealings in the assets of around 140 political figures — including 12 current or former heads of state. The vast stash of records was obtained from an anonymous source by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and shared with media worldwide by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The documents, from around 214,000 offshore entities, came from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm with offices in more than 35 countries. Though most of the alleged dealings are said by the ICIJ to be legal, they are likely to have a serious political impact on many of

those named. ICIJ director Gerard Ryle said the documents covered the day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years. “I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents,” he said. Among the main claims of the ICIJ investigations: — Close associates of Putin, who is not himself named in the documents, “secretly shuffled as much as $2 billion through banks and shadow companies,” the ICIJ said. — The files identified offshore companies linked to the family of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has led a tough anti-corruption campaign in his country, the ICIJ said. — In Iceland, the files show Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson and his wife secretly owned millions of dollars of investment in his country’s banks during the financial crisis through an offshore company. — The law firm of a

Former national cricketer stabbed, husband hangs self In the midst of celebration of the West Indies sensational 2016 T20 win, tragedy struck last night in the local cricketing fraternity, after the husband of a former national player stabbed her, before taking his own life. Police said that Abina Parker, 44, was stabbed in the stomach and face at around 21.00 hrs at her Kaneville, East Bank Demerara home during an altercation with her husband. The husband, identified as Melroy Parker, reportedly hanged himself at the couple’s residence. Mrs. Parker was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital. She was still being treated there at press time. Abina Parker represented Guyana in the West Indies senior regional competition, and is a member of the Guyana Police Force cricket club. She also captained Demerara in the Inter-county Senior Women’s Tournament. She also plays softball cricket and is also a professional umpire.

member of FIFA’s ethics committee, Juan Pedro Damiani, had business ties with three men indicted in corruption scandal: former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo, as well as Hugo Jinkis and his son Mariano, who were accused of paying bribes to win soccer broadcast rights in LatinAmerica. — Argentine football great Messi and his father owned a Panama company, Mega Star Enterprises Inc., a shell company that had previously not come up in Spanish investigations into the father and son’s tax affairs. Also in the world of football, Francetv Info named UEFA president Michel Platini as the beneficiary of a Panama-based tax company, adding however that no illegal activity was alleged. Platini’s communications service said in a statement sent to AFP that “all of his accounts and assets are known to the tax authorities in Switzerland, where he has been a tax resident since 2007”. Iceland’s Gunnlaugsson is expected to face a noconfidence vote this week over allegations he used a secret offshore firm called Wintris Inc. to hide millions of dollars in the British Virgin Islands. Visibly irritated, the premier refused to answer reporters’ questions during an interview broadcast on Swedish television yesterday evening. “I have never hidden assets,” Gunnlaugsson told a journalist from the Swedish SVT channel before leaving the room. His spokesman insisted he and his wife have scrupulously followed the law. At least 33 people and companies listed in the documents were blacklisted by the US government for wrongdoing, such as North Korea and Iran, as well as Lebanon’s Islamist group Hezbollah, the ICIJ said.

Reuters - The United Nations’ internal investigations office has uncovered serious lapses and due-diligence failures in the world body’s interaction with organizations tied to an alleged bribery scheme involving a former U.N. General Assembly president. The 21-page confidential report by the U.N. Office of Internal Oversight Services’ (OIOS), reviewed by Reuters, outlines the results of an audit ordered by SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon in response to charges against John Ashe, General Assembly president in 2013-2014, and six other people. The report gave the U.N. an overall grade of “partially satisfactory” in the March 22 report, which is available to U.N. member states on request. It noted “important deficiencies” in the way United Nations and its staff interacted with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and oversees U.N. employees. It is the biggest financial corruption crisis to rock the United Nations since the Oilfor-Food scandal hit the world body during the tenure of Ban’s predecessor Kofi Annan. U.N. officials and diplomats say latest scandal highlights the need for greater transparency at the United Nations. OIOS recommended improvements in internal U.N. risk management and controls in light of the irregularities uncovered - a U.N. document improperly altered, travel expenses paid by NGOs against U.N. guidelines, U.N. employees keeping iPads given to them by an NGO

Ban Ki-moon headed by an indicted individual. OIOS urged Ban to ensure that any outside organizations the U.N. deals with are properly vetted. It also said that the U.N. should review any continuing relations with NGOs linked to the indictment. The audit came in response to an ongoing U.S. investigation that has since October resulted in charges against seven people including Ashe, a former U.N. ambassador from Antigua and Barbuda. U.S. prosecutors say Ashe received $1.3 million in bribes from Chinese businessmen including Ng Lap Seng, a billionaire real estate developer who heads Macau-based Sun Kian Ip Group and was seeking to build a U.N.-sponsored conference center in Macau. Francis Lorenzo, a suspended deputy U.N. ambassador from the Dominican Republic who prosecutors said helped facilitate Ng’s bribes and

received bribes himself, pleaded guilty in March and agreed to cooperate with U.S. authorities. Sheri Yan, chief executive of Global Sustainability Foundation, a New York-based NGO, and Heidi Hong Piao, its finance director, accused of facilitating bribes to Ashe, pleaded guilty in January. Julia Vivi Wang has not yet entered a plea, and Ng’s assistant Jeff Yin pleaded not guilty. Attorneys for those charged either did not respond or declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. A spokesman for the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office also declined to comment. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that while the Secretary-General was glad that the audit found many controls working properly, the flagged procedural lapses were a concern. “Instructions reinforcing the correct procedures with respect to document issuance have been issued to the Departments and Offices concerned,” Dujarric said. “With regard to the specific cases referred to in the audit, action is being taken to determine responsibility and any measures, including possible disciplinary action, that may be deemed appropriate,” he said, adding that the U.N. was committed to cooperating with the U.S. authorities.

Brazilians riot after boy, 5, shot in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) – Residents of a Rio suburb rioted and set fire to buses after a five-yearold boy was shot dead during a police operation, Globo news reported yesterday. The boy, Matheus Santos Moraes, was struck by a bullet on Saturday. Police say he was hit in crossfire during a confrontation with drug traffickers, Globo reported.

The public safety chief for the Mage area on the northeastern outskirts of Rio de Janeiro called the ensuing violence unprecedented “chaos.” “Mage went through a situation never seen before in the municipality,” the official, Nelson Vinagre, told Globo yesterday. “We had 12 buses set on fire and several businesses looted.”

Vinagre called on residents to stay at home until the boy’s funeral late yesterday was over. The boy’s mother, Patricia Moraes, denied that there had been an exchange of gunfire at the time her son was killed. “I saw the police shooting. When I went to get him, he had already fallen,” she said. Police said they were investigating the tragedy.

Jamaica’s Foreign Minister wants ArcelorMittal pension in jeopardy Trinidad to improve holding facilities The Gleaner - Jamaica’s foreign affairs minister has called on the Trinidadian government and its national carrier Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to improve facilities for holding people who are denied entry to the country. Kamina Johnson Smith expressed dissatisfaction with the holding facilities at Trinidad’s Piarco International Airport following the receipt of two formal complaints from Jamaicans about the treatment they received in the twin-island republic after a decision to deny them entry on March 21. The foreign minister says she is aware of work done in 2013 and 2014 to improve facilities, but says more needs to be done. She says there is particular concern about facilities for holding people who are denied entry in

Kamina Johnson Smith Trinidad. Johnson-Smith says the Trinidad government feels very strongly that CAL should provide facilities. She says the foreign ministry will encourage CAL to ensure that the necessary facilities are put in place as Jamaica seeks to protect the

rights of citizens travelling overseas. The foreign affairs minister points out that following consultations between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago more than two years ago on free movement under the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Single Market and Economy, both sides had agreed to address issues, including the treatment of travellers denied entry. But Jamaica is again probing allegations that two Jamaicans were ill-treated on their arrival at Trinidad’s Piarco airport on March 21. Johnson Smith is reminding nationals that there is a CARICOM Complaints Procedure which may be used by people who have been denied entry, detained or mistreated at the ports of entry of other CARICOM states.

Terminated ArcelorMittal workers display two of their four banners at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday. PHOTO COURTESY: Steel Workers’ Union Trinidad Guardian - Terminated ArcelorMittal workers are up in arms as their pension plan is in jeopardy. The workers stand to lose their pensions after it was discovered at a meeting last week that the company had been delinquent in its payments to the plan. According to the 2012 Actuary Report, which Sunday Guardian was privy to, the market value with accrual at March 31, 2013, for 2014 was $815,396,571.22 The executive summary states the company was supposed to have increased its pension plan contribution from six per cent to 12 per cent and by August 2016, increased to 23.7 per cent. However, the company failed to do this and continued paying six per cent. Sunday Guardian understands that a lump sum payment of $9 million was made in February towards the plan. It is unclear why this sum was paid or whether the sum had covered the total amount they had failed to pay over the years, but questions have been raised about the company’s motives since it closed down in March. Up to the end of March when workers received their final salaries,

workers’ deductions had been made. With moods starting to change, the union is warning that it can no longer keep calm and is anticipating that there will be unrest in this country. The meeting, held between members of the Steel Workers Union of T&T (SWUTT) and the trustees of the pension plan, Republic Bank Ltd, along with the actuaries, raised questions about workers’ pensions, especially those who were encouraged by the company after its closure on March 11, to apply for their pension contribution reimbursement even though they had worked for more than five years. However, the union said this was against the Trust Deed and Rules which govern the plan. When the company closed its doors in March, 644 workers were sent home—206 had applied for early retirement and within the next 12 months, in excess of 100 would qualify for early retirement. Currently, there are close to 600 pensioners whose pensions range from $7,000 to $9,000. Calls to ArcelorMittal’s managing director and CEO Robert Bellisle’s mobile went unanswered.

Regional bar associations should promote CCJ more Founders of Bitt.com Gabriel Aabed (left) and Oliver Gale (centre) signing the partnership agreement while Overstock.com’s CEO Dr. Patrick Byrne looks on. (Photo: Barbados Today) BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The financial technology firm that recently launched a digitized version of the Barbados currency has received a multi-million-dollar investment from US online retailer Overstock.com. Overstock.com Saturday announced that it is investing an initial US$4 million in Bitt.com, which is working to move Caribbean islands to adopt digital national currencies. Bitt.com says it intends to use the proceeds from the Overstock.com investment to further its goal of building a financial ecosystem in the Caribbean that remedies the issues which people in the region experience daily, including high frictional fees from banks and other money services operations that make sending money in and out of the region cumbersome and costly. “Regional small businesses find it financially prohibitive to offer online payment options to consumers and this places a drag on entrepreneurism in the Caribbean,” said Bitt’s chief executive officer (CEO) and cofounder, Gabriel Abed. “Our aim is to use crypto-technology to turn our regional citizens into global citizens,

giving them the ability to send or receive money directly via their phones, in seconds, from all corners of the globe.” In February, Bitt launched a digitized Barbadian Dollar on the bitcoin blockchain, backed by the Central Bank of Barbados. The company intends to digitize all of the fiat currencies found in the Caribbean and place them on the blockchain so they can be easily traded among the islands. “A major impediment to economic advancement around the world is the fact that the vast majority of humans are unbanked. Yet mobile penetration in some countries exceeds 100 per cent,” Overstock.com’s CEO, Dr. Patrick Byrne pointed out. “Bitt has a vision for the Caribbean of frictionless mobile cash, beginning with central banks transparently issuing digital fiat which is then exchanged on a blockchain. We respect and endorse that vision, and share a common desire to see online consensual exchange flourish globally.” Overstock was listed in Forbes’ list of the Top 100 Most Trustworthy Companies in 2014. - St Kitts-Nevis governor general BASSETERRE, St Kitts (WINN) — St Kitts and Nevis Governor General Sir Samuel Tapley Seaton believes that regional bar associations have dropped the ball on promoting the merits of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). Seaton made the remarks while participating in a discussion on the CCJ at the two-day, 15th conference of presidents and governorsgeneral that wrapped up in Antigua and Barbuda last week. “The position is quite clear that there has not been adequate distilling of the news by the respective bar associations. As a former president of the OECS Bar Association, I know the difficulties that we have had many years ago, from the inception of the court. We advocated that the CCJ should become the final

appellate court for all of our jurisdictions. We thought that we would do it en bloc, in terms of the OECS courts, but that has not been successful,” he said. The governor general described the CCJ as a very “forward looking” court, saying the movement to the CCJ is a process that needs greater effort at public education. ‘Some territories have now taken the steps again and I think it is commendable because we need to move ahead, but I blame the bar associations for that lack of public awareness. “There are so many instances where the CCJ has been forward-looking and advanced the jurisprudence development in the region,” he said, commenting that some territories are reluctant to accept the new interventions and

Sir Samuel Tapley Seaton interpretations of legal conventions. Seaton acknowledged, while not directly addressing the issues, that a recent Privy Council ruling on the previous administration’s efforts to change constituency boundaries resulted in the court being cast in a favourable light in some quarters. Bahrain GP: Nico Rosberg wins after Lewis Hamilton collision

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg celebrates winning the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix as he salutes the camera from the Sakhir podium. Nico Rosberg took a comfortable win in the Bahrain Grand Prix as Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton fought back to third after a first-lap collision. Hamilton dropped to seventh on lap one following a slow start and a clash with Valtteri Bottas’ Williams at Turn One. His Mercedes bodywork damaged, Hamilton recovered well but was unable to catch Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in second. Rosberg’s fifth win in a row, going back to Mexico last year, gives him a 17-point title lead over Hamilton. The world champion may be concerned about his second poor start in as many races this season and Raikkonen’s pace was further evidence Ferrari are strong enough to at least put pressure on Mercedes this year. But the race effectively fell into Rosberg’s lap by the second corner as problems afflicted all three of his main rivals. In addition to Hamilton’s collision, the lead Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel did not even get that far. Vettel’s engine failed in spectacular fashion on the formation lap before the race had even started, so it will

never be known how much of a stiffer challenge he might have mounted to the Mercedes. That was one Ferrari out of the running and Raikkonen’s chances took a major hit shortly afterwards as he dropped to fifth after a poor start of his own. Raikkonen fought past Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and the two Williams cars of Felipe Massa and Bottas to be second by lap seven - but by that stage he was already 12 seconds adrift of Rosberg, a gap that proved too big to bridge. By the time the leaders’ three pit stops were finished, Raikkonen was only 4.6secs behind Rosberg but the Mercedes driver was comfortably able to hold him off and finished 10 seconds clear. Hamilton drove impressively to move back through the field with bodywork damage that will have cost him aerodynamic downforce, but ended up 19 seconds adrift of Raikkonen. The champion’s two poor starts in the first two races have effectively handed title rival Rosberg two victories, but it’s coming back from adversity where Hamilton

excels, and how he won his second championship in 2014 so beguilingly. “[The reason for the bad starts were] two separate incidents,” said Hamilton. “Both equally painful perhaps this one more - but we managed to recover, again damage limitation. “The team was hoping that potentially there would be a safety car. I had so much damage to the car, I couldn’t fight with Kimi.” Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo took a solid fourth from fifth on the grid, and there was another impressive showing from the new USbased, Ferrari-affiliated Haas team - Romain Grosjean taking a fighting fifth after an aggressive strategy focused on running three sets of super-soft tyres and then a final set of softs. Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen, last year’s stellar rookie, was a strong sixth ahead of the second Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat, who recovered from a poor qualifying performance that left him 15th on the grid to pass Massa for seventh on the penultimate lap. It was a disappointing end to a difficult race for Williams, with Bottas hit with a what some may consider a harsh drive-through penalty for the Hamilton collision, taking ninth. Stoffel Vandoorne was a solid 10th on his grand prix debut for McLaren, substituting for Fernando Alonso who was ruled out of this race by official FIA doctors because of a cracked rib sustained in his huge accident at the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago. Vandoorne, who outqualified team-mate Jenson Button, dropped behind the Englishman on the first lap but Button retired on the seventh lap, prompting a shake of the head in the pits at another reliability problem for the team from Alonso, who stayed on in Bahrain to help Vandoorne through the weekend. IPL for women will be fantastic... From page 30 in key decision-making bodies. Raj, who spoke of the need for the sport to be marketed better in India, was delighted with the response the women’s team received at the World T20 despite India’s early exit. Last week, Mohali hosted a first-of-its-kind double-header in India involving the men’s and women’s team. Prior to that, India’s matches in Delhi and Dharamsala witnessed crowds in excess of 7000. Raj attributed the changing landscape to the popularity of the game, and hoped the enthusiasm could be sustained. “It was a good experience to play in such a crowded stadium. It wasn’t new for us personally since we had experienced it in

Australia, but to see the fans cheer for us was unique,” Raj said. “Somewhere it is the game that the girls have played that has attracted such good crowd. If you want to just market the game, then T20 is the best format. But to have quality players coming through, you have to have day games, so there has to be a fine balance. “But the recent turn of events has been positive. Matches have been televised, so a lot of girls have been encouraged. Team’s performance has been good in recent times; BCCI has taken a lot of interest like introducing central contracts. So young players can professionally approach the sport now.” (ESPNcricinfo)

Djokovic beats Nishikori in Miami for 63rd career title

Novak Djokovic celebrates with the Butch Buchholz championship trophy as tournament director Adam Barrett looks on. (Geoff Burke) Top seed Novak Djokovic continued his domination of men’s tennis with a 6-3 6-3 win over Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the Miami Open final in Florida yesterday, before quickly turning his thoughts to the upcoming clay court season. The French Open is the only grand slam missing from Djokovic’s otherwise glittering resume, but he has already been installed by the bookmakers as odds-on favorite for Roland Garros after a magnificent start to 2016. Djokovic dropped serve in the first game against Nishikori but it was pretty much one-way traffic after that as he outclassed the sixth seed in all facets of the game on the hardcourt at Key Biscayne. The 28-year-old Serb took 85 minutes to join American Andre Agassi as a six-time Miami Open winner. Djokovic

said his first Miami win in 2007 paved the way for a career that now includes 63 ATP titles. “It gave me a lot of confidence, a lot of self belief that I can finally win these big tournaments, finally beat the top players,” he said in a courtside interview. “Every year I come back to this tournament I get goose bumps from those days. I was still 19 years old and making my way to the top.” He collected $1,028,300 on Sunday, becoming the sport’s all-time leading money-winner with career earnings approaching $100 million. It was his fourth consecutive championship, and a record 28th overall, in the Masters 1000, a series of nine tournaments considered the most prestigious other than the four grand slams. “First set was a real battle, but towards the end of the first set I started serving

better... which means a lot in matches like this against top players,” he said of his latest victory. It was Djokovic’s fourth title of 2016, following victories at the Australian Open, Qatar and Indian Wells. His only blemish on an otherwise perfect record so far this year came in Dubai in February, when he retired during a quarter-final with an eye infection. Djokovic will fly home on Monday to Monte Carlo, where he will begin his clay court season next week. “I have plenty of energy and lots of motivation for the beginning of the clay court season that ends up, hopefully, with a crown in Paris (in June),” he said. “That’s obviously one of the top goals each year, but I’m not the only one that wants to win that big trophy. There are many big events prior to that so I’m hoping I can build my form.” (Reuters)

IPL for women will be fantastic for the game – Lanning Australia Women’s captain Meg Lanning wants an IPL for women because she believes it could have an impact similar to that of the Women’s Big Bash League, which was played for the first time in Australia in the 201516 season. Lanning, who captained the Melbourne Stars in the WBBL, said the success of the league was “great for the game”. It took place after a year of conceptualisation, following Australia’s triumph at the 2014 Women’s World T20 and was a roaring success with players from England, South Africa, West Indies and New Zealand taking part in the franchisebased tournament; no Indian player, however, participated in the league. The tournament attracted record crowds and strong viewership numbers on television. The ECB is set to launch its own franchisebased tournament, comprising six teams, called the Women’s Super League, which will start from July 30. “We’ve seen women’s Big Bash kick off to a good success in Australia. There’s Super League in England as well. If there was an IPL for women here to be started, it will take the game forward and players will love to be involved in,” Lanning said. “Super League is another

India have made serious improvements in the last few years. and people want to watch it. T20 has been the vehicle of women’s cricket for last few years. We love playing Tests when we get a chance and we love playing more. There’s no doubt T20 is the way forward for the women’s game.” Lanning’s views were echoed by Charlotte Edwards, the England Women’s captain, who played for the Perth Scorchers in the WBBL. “We would really like to see an IPL and even Indian players playing in the Super League and WBBL,” Edwards said. “It will be great for our game. You

have seen what IPL has done for the men’s game; it will be fantastic for women’s cricket if it happens.” Women’s cricket in India seems to have taken a turn for the better in recent times. Leicester beat Saints to move seven clear at the top Leicester moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League with six games remaining after Wes Morgan’s header saw off Southampton. The Foxes skipper connected with Christian Fuchs’ first-half cross to score his first goal of the season. Southampton came closest when Sadio Mane rounded Kasper Schmeichel, but his goalbound shot was superbly blocked by Danny Simpson. Leicester will win the title if they win four of their remaining games. Claudio Ranieri’s side have now won five of their last six matches by a 1-0 scoreline, and after main title rivals Tottenham slipped up with a draw at Liverpool on Saturday, the most unlikely title triumph in Premier League history must surely be considered a probability now. Southampton remain seventh after a first defeat in four matches. Only two of the Foxes’ first 26 league games were 1-0 wins, but at a crucial stage of the season, they have found the knack of

They have also been able to rely on finding vital goals from unlikely sources - with Danny Drinkwater, Andy King and Leonardo Ulloa all having chipped in in recent

weeks - and this time it was Morgan who found the net. The defender outmuscled Jordy Clasie from a cross by Fuchs - the Austrian’s fourth assist of the season. Thereafter the hosts had to weather persistent Southampton pressure, as their possession

dropped from 52.5% in the first half to 40% after the interval. But once again their back four proved impregnable, with Morgan and Robert Huth making 20 clearances between them. Southampton slipped to only a second defeat in six away games, but manager Ronald Koeman felt his side were on the receiving end of two bad decisions. The Dutchman alleged Simpson’s first-half block was a handball, and cited a similar infringement in the second half when Huth blocked a cross. “For the third match in a row we don’t get a 100% penalty - Stoke City away, Liverpool at home, and today two penalties,” Koeman said. “The big one is when Sadio Mane’s shot hits Danny Simpson and it is a red card and a penalty. If it is not a handball, it is a goal. I don’t know what they are doing. “The second one was when Robert Huth handled. I don’t say [Leicester] don’t deserve the victory, but if it is a penalty and a red card, they don’t win.” (BBCsport)

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), its Board of Directors, Management, Staff and the people of the Caribbean/West Indies are extremely proud of the achievement of the women’s team for its emphatic win over Australia to take the 2016 ICC World T20 crown. The region is celebrating the victory. The women displayed grit and determination throughout the entire tournament and ended in a thrilling overall win. Congratulations to the Player-of-the-Tournament and captain Stafanie Taylor, and Player-of-the-Match Hayley Matthews. We also offer all-round praise to the team management and all the persons who worked with this unit in preparation for this tournament. We look forward to the delegation returning home to celebrate.

WICB CONGRATULATES WINDIES Our men’s, women’s and Under-19 teams within the last three months have made the West Indies a region worthy of tremendous attention by being the best at the international level in World Cricket. We are indeed a proud set of people today and we want to thank ALL OF YOU for your tremendous support. The men’s team has been electric and exciting in their performances during the tournament and we are all PROUD. This is a defining moment for Cricket and we ought to thank each and every one of our Directors, Management, Staff and supporters for the support West Indies Cricket has received. This is a truly ecstatic moment and we are indeed proud of this momentous achievement. The T20 format is a springboard to the other formats and we will use this as an opportunity to continue the development work we have to do to make the overall cricket product better. The men executed their comprehensive plan and we are pleased with the results. We salute the entire delegation on the hard work and commitment showed. We congratulate the team and management.

Brathwaite sixes take WI to thrilling title win Write off West Indies cricket at your peril. Less than four months in, 2016 is already a year of great celebration and renewal for cricket in the Caribbean. West Indies won the Under-19 World Cup. West Indies won the Women’s World T20. And now West Indies have won the World T20. In doing so, Darren Sammy’s men have become the first team to win two World T20 tournaments, having also triumphed in Sri Lanka in 2012. Those are the facts. The how is all the more extraordinary. Set 156 to beat England and win the championship, West Indies found themselves needing 19 off the last over, to be bowled by Ben Stokes. Marlon Samuels, who had steered the chase, was on 85. But he was at the wrong end. This was all down to Carlos Brathwaite, the allrounder who emerged on the Test tour of Australia just a few months ago. Six. Six. Six. Six. Job done with two balls to spare. The first one was a poor ball from Stokes, down leg, clubbed over deep backward square. Then a length ball slammed down the ground over long-on. Then over long-off. One run needed. Push a single? Why bother when you have the power, like Brathwaite, to crunch another six over the leg side. The West Indies players streamed onto the field in jubilation. They had not only done it. They had done it in style. And all this from a team that, in the weeks before this tournament, was stuck in another pay dispute with their board. But that is for another day. This day was about what happened on the field, and West Indies dominated the first over of the match and the last over of the match. England, along the way, had their own ups and downs, but by taking wickets throughout the chase gave themselves a strong chance of claiming

their second World T20 title. But if Brathwaite destroyed them at the end, Samuels was the one who chipped away at them through most of the innings. Samuels walked to the crease in the second over of the chase, when England had surprised West Indies by using Joe Root with the new ball, and he duly claimed Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle in his first over. Samuels had a mountain of work to do, and he did it, just as he had in 2012. Samuels is an enigmatic cricketer, one who seems to spend long periods in hibernation. During those times he looks like a Don’t Care Bear. But when he awakes, he is capable of anything, as he showed during the World T20 final in 2012, when his 78 from 56 balls set up the West Indies victory over Sri Lanka. Here when he came out of his hibernation, he was a Kung Fu Panda, clubbing England’s bowlers and kicking them into the dust. And he did it with limited support. England’s bowling was good. David Willey picked up 3 for 20, Liam Plunkett was hard to get away, Adil Rashid cost less than six an over. Dwayne Bravo managed 25 off 27 balls but besides him, Samuels and Brathwaite were the only ones to reach double figures. Brathwaite’s final score was 34 from 10

balls, not out. Notably, Root did not bowl an over after taking 2 for 9 in his first. West Indies found themselves needing 45 off the last four overs, then 38 off the last three, and 27 off the last two. But Eoin Morgan had left himself with Stokes and Root as his only bowling options, and Stokes could not hit the mark. Chasing had again proved successful for West Indies, who did not lose a toss in this tournament and bowled first every time. You could sense the relief for Darren Sammy, then, when he won the toss for the 10th successive time in T20 internationals, and sent England in. Ball one, Samuel Badree skidded it past the bat of Jason Roy, who was struck on the pad. Not out, sliding down leg. Ball two, Badree skidded it past the bat of Roy and onto the stumps. Roy had starred with 78 in England’s semi-final win over New Zealand, but this was going to be a rather different sort of innings. When Alex Hales flicked Andre Russell to short fine leg in the next over, it felt like an anti-climax was brewing. So too when Morgan, perplexed by Badree’s wrong’un, edged to Gayle at slip to leave the total at 23 for 3 in the fifth over. But Badree bowled out, his figures of 2 for 16 impressive, and suddenly it

was more of a contest. Root was outstanding in the face of wickets falling around him. He struck seven boundaries and all were from classy, traditional cricket

strokes, mostly along the ground, through the gaps. When eventually he innovated, he immolated. On 54 from 36, he fell when he tried to paddle Brathwaite over short fine leg, but in that position Sulieman Benn dived forward to take a sharp catch low to the ground. West Indies’ fielding was universally outstanding. No catches were dropped, and some of those taken were far from straightforward. Badree, Brathwaite and Russell were all hard to get away. Bravo found three wickets, including those of Stokes and Moeen Ali in the space of three balls. But the fifth bowler - a combination of Benn and Sammy - leaked heavily. Benn’s three overs cost

40 runs and Jos Buttler clubbed him for a pair of consecutive sixes in his 36 off 22 balls, and Sammy bowled just one over for 14. Sammy finds himself in the strange position of having captained West Indies to one of their greatest triumphs in recent years, but in doing so having almost done himself out of a job. He made only eight runs in this tournament and bowled three overs for 31 runs. In three games he neither batted nor bowled. But frankly, who cares? Sammy is a dual World T20winning captain. His men have done what no others in cricket have done. And they have given the Caribbean region a hat-trick of triumphs in 2016. What a year for West Indies. (ESPNcricinfo)

West Indies Women gun down 149 for maiden WT20 title West Indies converted their maiden appearance in a World Twenty20 final into a historic victory in Kolkata, beating three-time defending champions Australia for the first time in a T20 international by pulling off the second highest chase in the tournament’s history. The heroes of the daunting pursuit were 18year old Hayley Matthews and the captain Stafanie Taylor, whose half-centuries and 120-partnership came at more than a run a ball. Their effort left West Indies with two runs to get off four balls, and when Britney Cooper pushed to Megan Schutt at midwicket and sprinted, what should have been a run-out at the bowler’s end resulted in the overthrow that sealed the title. Their team-mates blazed a trail on to the field and the women were soon joined by the West Indies men in joyful celebrations in the middle of Eden Gardens. Those scenes scarcely seemed likely when West Indies were run ragged in the first half of the game, as half-centuries from Elyse Villani and Meg Lanning helped Australia post an imposing 148 for 5. However, Matthews and Taylor clinically brought the chase into the realms of possibility. From the 10-over mark, there was an air of inevitability to the chase as Matthews, who combined her big-hitting prowess with delicate dabs, attacked the bowling. She laid into Jess Jonassen, who had conceded only 12 off her first three

(AFP) overs, to turn the tide going into the last seven overs of the chase. Just like that, Australia, who had a fourth title well in their grasp for the first 25 overs of the clash, saw the trophy slipping away as their bowlers, who clinically applied the choke in a similar situation against England, fell apart under pressure. The West Indies bowlers had also come under severe pressure under the wheel of Villani and Lanning, who made 52 apiece in a dominating batting display. Lanning had enjoyed the best seat in the house as Villani peppered the leg-side field

with regularity. Full tosses were swept fiercely, while short balls were pulled with disdain, with as many as six boundaries in the Powerplay overs coming between fine leg and deep square leg. Villani’s aggression helped Australia tide over the dismissal of Alyssa Healy in the second over. Lanning had slapped her second ball into the point boundary to trigger a blaze of strokes that left West Indies playing catch-up before they could soak in the occasion. Having blasted 54 in the first six overs, Australia were on their way to an imposing total.

U.S. women’s soccer star Wambach arrested for DUI, apologizes Retired U.S. woman’s soccer star Abby Wambach was arrested in Oregon on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, an incident for which the popular player apologized yesterday on social media. “I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me,” Wambach said in a statement posted on social media. Wambach, who helped the U.S. women’s team to the 2015 World Cup title and retired as the world’s leading international goalscorer, was arrested late Saturday night in Portland after police saw her run a red light in her 2014 Range R o v e r, a c c o r d i n g t o a statement by Portland police. She failed field sobriety tests and was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of driving under

the influence of intoxicants - alcohol. She was later released on her own recognizance. “Wambach was polite and cooperative throughout the investigation,” the police statement said. In her statement, Wambach said she had been having dinner at a friend’s home before she was pulled over. She promised not to repeat her “horrible mistake” and apologized to her friends, her family, her fans, “and those that look to follow a better example.” “Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself,” she wrote. “I have let myself and others down.” Wambach, 35, a former Olympic, professional and World Cup player, scored more g o a l s i n i n t e r n a t i o nal

competition than any other soccer player in history - male or female - before her October 2015 retirement. She scored 184 goals in 252 matches in international play. Wambach, a vocal supporter of women’s sports, led the U.S. team in scoring in every world championship she played until the Women’s World Cup in July 2015. In that game, Wambach netted the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the final game of group play. The Americans defeated Japan 52 in the championship match, winning their first World Cup title in 16 years. Having played in four women’s World Cup tournaments, Wambach played in two Olympics, winning goal medals in 2004 in Athens, and 2012 in London. She missed the 2008 Olympics with a broken leg. Once the head start was achieved, both batsmen negated Anisa Mohammed’s spin threat by milking the bowling. That Taylor

employed as many as six bowlers in the first eight overs showed the extent to which Australia had derailed West Indies’ plans. Dottin had been central to West Indies’ march to the final, not just with the bat but ball too. Her variations in pace and pin-point accuracy at the death had been tough to get away, but her predictability against some serious hitting by Lanning and Villani, who brought up her fifty off just 34 deliveries, failed to put the brakes on the scoring. West Indies had a wicket against the run of play, when Villani was caught at cover off a leading edge to break a 77run partnership off just 60 deliveries. But Ellyse Perry provided a surge, and Lanning’s wrists and extraordinary strokes, aided by supreme fitness, threatened to achieve a target beyond West Indies. Australia brought up 100 in the 14th over as Lanning laid into Dottin by hitting her for three successive fours, two of which pierced a packed off-side field. Once

Lanning fell for 52, it was Perry who gave the finishing touches, hitting two sixes in her 28. West Indies, though, fought back to concede just 36 off the last five overs. Something about the last over of Australia’s innings they scored only one - fired West Indies up. For the first three overs of the chase, however, Australia put a lid on the scoring, conceding just nine runs. The defending champions began to relax, but Matthews was just getting started, unfurling boundary after boundary to build pressure on Australia. Halfway through the chase, Lanning called her team into a huddle in a bid to regroup, but to no avail. The wicket of Matthews, who miscued a pull off Kristen Beams to midwicket with West Indies needing 29 off 26 balls, came as relief rather than joy. That allowed Dottin, who had an off day with the ball, a shot at redemption, which she gleefully accepted as West Indies celebrated a historic triumph in style. (ESPNcricinfo)
