A former Guyana President should There needs to be a not descend to such low levels competitor with GPL
DEAR EDITOR, On a previous occasion, I responded to the PPP/C’s vilification of GECOM, in relation to its preparedness to conduct local government election, by indicating that ‘time would tell’. Time has since vindicated GECOM. It conducted 71 local elections with a passing mark of at least 8/10. I recalled that occurrence because my comment then (time will tell) is equally applicable to the hysteria that the PPP/C sought to generate in relation to the conduct of the national grade 6 examinations. Since, the impact of their pronouncements can be detrimental to national cohesion, I have found it necessary to respond and expose those pronouncements for what they really are and for the divisive impact they are intended to foster. In doing so, I restrained myself from adding to the hysteria and trauma by delaying my comment to allow for the passing of the
examination; and will refer to Ramotar’s letter of April 25, 2016 1. Ramotar is a complete stranger to the truth in his contention that no explanation was given for the need for names to be written on the grade 6 examination scripts, albeit on a perforated attachment that will not be available to the markers. Both the Minister of Education and the Chief Education Officer have made public statements on the question, not to mention the frequently aired public announcement on the matter. The motive for Ramotar’s accusation is therefore questionable, since his contention is crass misinformation. 2. The issue of objectivity on the basis of the candidate’s name being written-in does not arise. Paper one will be electronically marked, hence eliminating any scope for human manipulation of the candidate’s individual score, more so based on ethnicity as Ramotar would want the public to believe. Paper two
will have the perforated part, with the names written-in, detached. Those names will not be available to the markers. This is all public information, yet Ramotar proceeds to misinform and misguide the public with the intent of establishing that Indians, in particular, will be the victims of discrimination. It takes a mind like Ramotar’s to envisage such a grand scheme of targeting Indians although their names, the possible source of their identity, will be unavailable to the markers. And even if they were to be available, it would still require a schemer of Ramotar’s imagination to design a system in which diverse markers will identify Indians for discrimination as they mark the over 14,000 papers of each subject. While Ramotar seeks to point his finger at the regime, he is in fact besmirching the name of each and every marker in the system, or is it a particular ethnic group that will perpetrate this act? Is he saying that Olato Sam a PPP/ C appointee and Ms Kadir
another such appointee, both of whom have been retained by the current Government, and are ultimately responsible for the conduct of the grade 6 examinations, are not to be trusted. 3. Ramotar seeks to build his case on antecedents: rampant dismissal of Indians; former National Service as a tool to purge UG of Indians; National Service as a camp of rapers of Indian girls; and discrimination against Indians in every sphere of activity in Guyana. This has long been the subliminal and sometimes overt polity of the PPP in its anti-national and racial campaign to retain ethnic votes. For all of its ills National Service’s greatest benefit was providing Guyanese with a Guyanese geographic and demographic/multi-ethnic exposure that resulted in love for country and appreciation of fellow Guyanese. That is the National Service that the PPP opposed, even after Burnham, in unity talks with (Continued on page 31)
Worsening traffic situation on the W.B.D. DEAR EDITOR, I am writing this letter to inform others about the worsening traffic situation that exists at the Vreed-enHoop junction. Every day in the mornings and afternoons/early evenings, there is a huge build-up of traffic at this location. This is a spot where traffic from three locations converge, trying to reach the West Coast, West Bank, and head to the Vreed en Hoop stelling, respectively. Specifically in the mornings the situation is most dire, with the amount of persons trying to get to the stelling to cross into Georgetown, and choosing this route because they know that crossing over on the bridge is just as bad. Vehicles will spend about 30 minutes to 45 minutes just to get from the Plantain Walk area to the
stelling. And then to get back out from the stelling area takes just as long. It has gotten so bad at this point that hire cars, and even taxis, are refusing to go up to the junction to drop their passengers off. Persons who have already waited in traffic just to get to the junction must then walk the rest of the way to the stelling. And this is a situation that is guaranteed to get worse with every day that passes, because we know for a fact that every day multiple vehicles come off the wharves and into the country. With this continuous
increase of vehicles on the road, versus the singular traffic routes that we have, what else is there to expect? Why is there no news of new roads on the West Coast and West Bank? Why must all traffic between the West Coast and Georgetown use the same routes as those persons on the West Bank heading to the stelling? Currently there is a project in progress to widen the West Coast Demerara road from Parika to Vreed-EnHoop, but when has there ever been traffic build-up on the West Coast? And widening a pre-existing road
is a far cry from creating new roads and new routes. More must be done, and quickly. In closing I would like to invite anyone who doubts me of this issue to come themselves and experience this situation first hand, especially on a morning when there is traffic build-up at the Harbour Bridge, and everyone is trying to get to their jobs and businesses in Georgetown. The more time the country’s workers spend being stuck in traffic, the more our country loses in productivity, and on its economy. Kapil Singh
DEAR EDITOR, I have sit in silence and watch the ridiculous and backwards changes this new government has made hoping that someone would say something about them. The people in this country need to wake up. There are many issues I would like to write on but for now I will talk about high cost of obtaining a GPL meter. GPL told me that the cost will be $19000 and something (can’t remember the exact number) and for the new housing schemes like Parfaite
Harmony where I am located I will have to pay an additional $10000 Capital contribution for infrastructure development. My frustration is that this government is pressuring persons to start construction by sending out letters to them and added to the expense of construction the cost of everything is going up. In my view GPL supposed to give the meter for free. If a business man tells a customer that he has to pay extra for the business man do develop (Continued on page 31)
A Barbadian reflects... From page 4 academic achievers and illiterate alike. I keep getting the same answer from each group to this one particular question: Why do you dislike the Indian and why do you dislike the African? The African would advance many versions as to why you can’t or shouldn’t “trust” the Indian while the Indian would answer also with the same version. What is even more damning in this time is that the political entities of the day, although knowing the truth, do not have the political will to set the record straight and bring an end to this poison instead of allowing future generations to listen and absorb the misguided opinions spewed out by their elders who in some cases don’t even understand what transpired to bring about this
mayhem. Come to the realization that as you know the truth it will set you free...free from the bondage of hatred and racism. I applauded both the current government and the republic’s opposition in promoting verbally, their desire to see a nationalist spirit with all races moving forward in unity. This however, will never become a reality if each party continues to preach one thing publicly and behind the scenes use this divisive element called racial animosity to cement, galvanize and motivate their base. Maybe a united nation of Guyana need a “truth and reconciliation” commission to heal these wounds , promote forgiveness and move forward as one. Emmerson Inniss, St. Michael, Barbados

Buyer claims side deal done to waive remaining US$5M Sale of GTT shares…
The controversy surrounding the sale of government’s 20 percent shares in the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) continues to grow. National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited is now claiming that Guyana’s former Ambassador to China, David Dabydeen, facilitated a US$5M debt write off to the company that bought Government’s shares in GTT. However, the company said that it is still to confirm this information. NICIL made this known via a statement it released to the media yesterday. The company said that it issued the statement with an aim to bring clarity to the status of its attempts to secure the payment of the outstanding US$5M from Hong Kong Golden Telecom
Company (HKGT). The statement indicated that on August 24, 2012, NICIL and Hong Kong Golden Telecom Company Limited (HKGT) executed a Share Sale and Purchase Agreement (SSPA) for the sale of NICIL’s 20 per cent shareholding in GTT, as approved by the former Cabinet. The SSPA provided for the Purchase Price of US$30M. The agreement was for US$25M to be paid on the closing date and the balance of US$5M to be paid on the completion date, which was defined as the second anniversary of the closing date. NICIL sought to clarify conflicting reports regarding the identity of the contractual party to the SSPA. It said that HKGT was the contractual party to the SSPA. HKGT is a subsidiary of Datang Telecom
NICIL Chairman, Dr. Maurice Odle International Technology (Hong Kong) Company Limited, which is wholly owned by Datang Telecom International Technology Co., Ltd., PR China. Datang Telecom International Technology Co, Ltd. is listed as a second tier subsidiary in the Datang Group of Companies, said NICIL. The company said that on November 8, 2012, US$25M was wired to NICIL’s foreign currency account held at
Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited. The balance of US$5M became due and payable to NICIL on October 22, 2014 and, despite several written requests by NICIL, HKGT has still failed to pay the balance. Kaieteur News understands that the SSPA was so constructed that should any conflict arise, Guyana or HKGT would have to petition the United Kingdom court. NICIL said, yesterday, that in an attempt to avoid costly and lengthy adjudication of the matter in the English Courts, it requested the assistance of the Government of Guyana to encourage HKGT through diplomatic channels, to honour its contractual obligations. But that route apparently proved futile. NICIL’s information, apparently received from the embattled Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, contradicts the information Minister Trotman received from the very Harmon and fed to the media.
Trotman, at a post Cabinet press briefing, had said that Minister of State Joseph Harmon had retrieved documents from his trip to China that purported to show that the money had been paid before last year’s general elections. NICIL said, “Contrary to various media reports, NICIL has not received the outstanding US$5M and HKGT remains in default of the SSPA.” “To NICIL’s knowledge, neither HKGT nor its related companies has alleged that the balance of US$5M was paid.” NICIL said that what was alleged by HKGT was that following a series of communications with the former Guyana Ambassador to China, HKGT was assured that it was not required to pay the balance of US$5M. This was because the HKGT had not been granted the same minority protection rights enjoyed by NICIL—that is two, instead of one, representatives on the GT&T Board of Directors. HKGT alleged that it was initially promised two seats by the then government of Guyana. NICIL said that HKGT also alleged that the decision to waive the US$5M was contained in a side agreement. NICIL noted that it has not been able to verify the veracity of HKGT’s claim of waiver and has requested the assistance of the Government
Guyana’s former Ambassador to China, David Dabydeen of Guyana to verify the validity of HKGT’s assertion and the documents they produced to support same. The company said that a further press release will be issued at the end of the verification process. Recently, former President, Donald Ramotar issued a statement about the sale arrangement. In that statement, he sought to debunk the allegation that the money was paid and that members of the PPP/C would have pocketed the sum. In that statement, Ramotar said nothing a b o u t a possible debt write off. He did not even hint at such an agreement. Also, NICIL’s Chairman Dr, Maurice Odle, had about two months ago, told Kaieteur News that the Purchaser was requesting additional seats as a ransom for the outstanding sum. At that point, he said nothing about a waiver.
Int’l consultant meets Govt. on US$2M climate funding Remi Rijs, an international consultant attached to the Global Environment Facility (GEF), yesterday paid a courtesy call on Minister of State, Joseph Harmon at his Ministry of the Presidency office. Minister Harmon is the political focal point (PFP) to the GEF. That facility has responsibility for the GEF 6 (Guyana STAR) Project, which is aimed at assisting Guyana in meeting its Climate Change obligations under the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. The local United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office is the partner entity for the GEF 6 (Guyana STAR) project and the Government of Guyana is the implementing entity. The project is valued at US$2M and the Office of Climate Change will be the executing agency. Rijs’s visit to Guyana, according to the Ministry of the Presidency, is designed to review the inception report and work plan with key stakeholders and gather adequate information for preparation of the Project Concept Note in order to begin unlocking the funds from GEF. Rijs was accompanied to the meeting by Dr. Patrick Chesney, Assistant Resident Representative, Environment, Extractive Industry and Energy, UNDP Guyana.

Air strikes on Aleppo hospital kill doctors and children
People inspect the damage at the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)-backed al-Quds hospital after it was hit by airstrikes, in a rebel-held area of Syria’s Aleppo, yesterday. REUTERS/Abdalrhman Ismail Reuters - Air strikes destroyed a hospital and killed dozens of people in rebelheld areas of Aleppo, including children and doctors, in an attack that a U.S. official said appeared to be solely the work of the Syrian government. The city of Aleppo is at the centre of a military escalation that has undermined peace talks in Geneva aimed at ending the five-year-old war. U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura appealed to the presidents of the United States and Russia to intervene to salvage a ceasefire that was “barely alive”. The truce is intended to allow an opportunity for peace talks and delivery of humanitarian relief. Six days of air strikes and rebel shelling in Aleppo, which is split between government and rebel forces, have killed 200 people, twothirds of them on the opposition side, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says. The “catastrophic deterioration” in Aleppo over the last 24 to 48 hours has
jeopardised the aid lifeline that supplies millions of Syrians, said Jan Egeland, chairman of the U.N. humanitarian task force. “I could not in any way express how high the stakes are for the next hours and days.” The U.S. State Department said Syria’s air strike on the hospital in Aleppo was “reprehensible,” and it called on Russia to use its influence to pressure Syrian President Bashar alAssad’s government to stop the attacks. “Once again we call on the regime to cease these absolutely senseless attacks, which are of course violations of the cessation of hostilities,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said. A State Department official said there were indications that the bombing of the hospital was conducted solely by the Syrian government. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Russia had an urgent responsibility to press the government of its ally Assad to stop attacking
civilians and observe the ceasefire. The Geneva talks aim to end a war that has created the world’s worst refugee crisis, allowed for the rise of Islamic State and drawn in regional and major powers, but the negotiations have all but failed and a truce to allow them to take place has collapsed. Winding up the latest round of talks, de Mistura said he aimed to resume them in May, but gave no date. “Wherever you are, you hear explosions of mortars, shelling and planes flying over,” said Valter Gros, who heads the International Committee of the Red Cross Aleppo office. “There is no neighbourhood of the city that hasn’t been hit. People are living on the edge. Everyone here fears for their lives and nobody knows what is coming next,” he said. A Syrian military source said government planes had not been in areas where air raids were reported. Syria’s army denied reports that the Syrian air force targeted the hospital.

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT WITH THE ECONOMY When the PPP government decided that it was appointing a National Economic Council to be headed by former President Bharrat Jagdeo, critics of the government said it was just a ploy to give the former President a hand on the levers of the administration of the country. The need for such a Council was also called into question. The Council, in fact, never seemed to have gotten going, vindicating the sentiments of the critics of the government. It was therefore surprising that when the new government came into office, one of its first acts was to appoint an economic advisory council, similar to that which the PPP had planned to implement. But just like the fate of the National Economic Council, the APNU+AFC’s Economic Advisory Council seems to have been stillborn. The public has heard nothing from and about the council since its formation. The economy is, of course, on even keel. The economy is expected to continue its growth based on mining investments that the PPP would have made while it was in power and which are now bearing fruit. But even
with the economy likely to show growth for the rest of the year and into next year, there are a number of worrying signs which require attention. The first is the lack of major investments in the economy. APNU may be tying its hopes on the discovery of oil. But oil prices have dipped so low that even if oil is found in commercially feasible quantities, it makes little sense for the oil companies to invest in drilling at this stage. Nothing is therefore likely to emerge on the petroleum front for at least the next ten years. Gold alone cannot push the economy beyond the next three years. Output is likely, even with the new mines in the pipeline, to taper off within the next three years, but even if a King Solomontype mine is found this will not be addressing an underlying fault line in the economy: the lack of purchasing power on the part of consumers. Money is simply not circulating in the economy. An invasion of tourists is likely in the next couple of weeks. The money that they will spend, the hosting of the CPL final and the hosting of matches in the Tri-Nation
series is not likely to change the situation in the country. Purchasing power cannot be imported. There is stagnation in commerce. Everyone is feeling the pinch. Inflation has remained stable, indicating that the problem is a circulatory one. Money is not circulating in the economy and capital flight is not the answer, because the exchange rate has not been moving up and down. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Business have not offered any answers to what is happening in the commercial sector. Perhaps they do not know. Perhaps
they do not share the assessment that business is down. They should. Even the vendors are complaining. In fact, a worrying sign has developed. Itinerant vending is springing up all over the country. One explanation is that people are testing the waters to see whether the government will clampdown on them. The second is the more realistic explanation: people are feeling the squeeze and really have no other choice but to go and make a hustle. The Ministry of Finance needs help. It should not get too comfortable by the fact
that growth will be sustained right through to 2017. It should be worried about the lack of investment in the economy. The Ministry should be concerned about the fact that money is not circulating even though two massive national Budgets were passed in the short space of eight months. Something is drastically wrong with the economy. An emergency meeting of the Advisory Economic Council needs to be summoned. The experts need to look at the numbers and decide whether there is need for any adjustments, including any
austerity measures. The government should not be deceived by the growth numbers. They know all too well how misleading those numbers can be.

== THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN ==
Here’s the problem with the APNU-AFC leadership Ruel Johnson in writing about the need for the Chronicle to be independent of political directives wrote, “The primary reality is that the government (Coalition) from the inception had a general communication crisis on its hands, partly due to the general paucity of communication skills in Guyana, partly because of the
poor infrastructure left in place by its predecessor, and partly due to the challenges of cohesion that necessarily plague such a new coalition.” While those factors are valid, I think Ruel made a seminal omission - the nature of our politicians. They have not been brought up in a culture where power exists to serve. The nature of colonial
rule has permanently damaged the psyche of Guyanese politicians. This is why I think Hamza Alavi’s phenomenal theory of the “Over-Developed State” is necessary for the Guyanese people to read and internalize. Guyanese politicians have inculcated an understanding of power whereby it is to be used to
rule, to reign, not to serve. If as Ruel contends, they lack communication skills, it is because obsession with power kills the potential to acquire those skills. Our political masters do not accept that they need those skills, because people with power don’t need such skills. Such an endowment, they feel, is for their subordinates and their underlings. The fear I have of power in 2016 is that for 23 years, beginning with the assumption to power of the PPP in 1992, the current occupiers of political office are not prepared to learn from the mistakes of the PPP. PPP leaders are deeply ashamed to write about how they lost their way. They feel that if they open up about the arrogance of power during their reign, it may affect their credibility and discourage incoming support. One will never find straightforward acknowledgement in the frequent letters in the newspapers, press conferences and media interviews of PPP leaders of the horrible attitudes that prevailed among them. Looking back at their time in power, the PPP leaders must know that Rohee, Charles Ramson Senior, Nirmal Rekha, Bibi Shadick, Kwame Mc Coy and so many others were liabilities. These people were bad publicity for the PPP. But the arrogance of power
blinded the PPP. Once Ramson opened his mouth, the PPP lost support. Once Rohee opened his mouth, the PPP lost support. We have the silly situation in which the PPP boasts that the 2015 election was too close for the APNU-AFC to boast about victory. The ballot difference was just under 5000. But has it occurred to the PPP that those 5000 voters may have been people fed up with the pomposity of a Clement Rohee, a Charles Ramson, a Bibi Shadick? The PPP is an unhistorical party. It will not learn. It doesn’t want to learn. After losing power, it has elevated the very elements that were partly responsible for its election loss. Bibi Shadick has moved to the Elections Commission. She is not going to win any hearts with her style. It has employed Kwame McCoy at its radio station and the asininities continue. Has APNU-AFC learnt from the soulless voices and empty echoes of nonsense that characterize the years of Jagdeo/Ramotar hegemony? Ruel Johnson speaks of lack of communication skills. Is Ruel sure about that or is that he is conscious of his ministerial advisor job? Could Ruel explain why Joe Harmon took six weeks to express regret for remarks that he has no apologies to make for the huge salary increase? Why
Frederick Kissoon six weeks when just a day later, Coalition supporters were banging down the Government’s door demanding an explanation? Up to this day, Joe Harmon has not met with the press for a frank exchange with them on the multidimensional story of a long journey in a far off land with Baishanlin, Brian Tiwarie, and Clinton Williams. But the same Joe Harmon was in Berbice recently, chatting away with citizens and sharing out goodies. The same Joe Harmon refused to return Glenn Lall’s emails and phone calls. The same Joe Harmon refused to contact me after I left a message with his close friend, Mark Archer. I can tell you, Ruel; that is not lack of communication skills. This is how power-holders operate. This columnist received severe complaints from day one in the life of the Coalition Government from citizens about the arrogance of Minister Keith Scott. The TUC General-Secretary, Lincoln Lewis, couldn’t take it anymore; he penned a letter against Minister Scott in both the KN and SN. Talk to your Ministers, Ruel; they have gone astray.

Land Court judge robbery/home invasion…
Defendant says police “set him up”
Police find mutilated remains of missing boat crash victim
…claims senior cop wanted him to be informant
Anthony David Some damning accusations were made against police officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, Eve Leary, by robbery accused Anthony David when the trial of the five men charged with robbing Land Court Judge Nicola Pierre continued. A well attired Anthony David took to the witness box, yesterday, and claimed that he was framed by head of Major Crimes Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mitchell Caesar. He said that he was framed in relation to charges of robbery under-arms and discharging a loaded firearm. The charges against David stemmed from a robbery committed on Land Court judge, Nicola Pierre, at her home in the gated community of Felicity, East Coast Demerara on July 9, last. David told the court that Caesar “set him up” as a favour to another officer whose name he gave as Narine. Narine, he said, told him that he wanted to see him rot in jail. David told Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul that he was at home on July 8, 2015 but left home early the following morning to take his young daughter to the hospital. He recalled that on July 14, 2015 as he was
placing posters in front of his work place on Sheriff Street, where he had worked for over a decade, police officers arrived and requested to search his Toyota Allion motorcar. “I asked them why you would want to search a parked vehicle. They said they wanted to do a normal routine search. They searched the car and didn’t find anything. Then officer Narine said this vehicle has to be taken down to the station.” David added that he was transported to CID headquarters where he was placed in the lock-ups until July 18, 2015. On that day, the defendant stated that he was slapped and cuffed by Officer Melville and Narine while Caesar sat and did nothing to help him. Caesar, he stated, offered him a job to work as an “informant” for the police but he refused. David told the court that the ASP told him he looked like the type of person who has his head on. According to him, Caesar explained to him that his job would be to call him on his personal phone and notify him when a “crime goes down”. But David testified that he told the ASP that he was satisfied with his job as a bond clerk at a city pharmacy since he was collecting a salary every month. David said that Caesar ordered other officers to place him back in the lock-ups because he was not telling him what he wanted to hear. On July 18, David recalled that Caesar told him that he would be placed on identification (ID) parade and would be sent home if he was not pointed out. “I did 11 ID parades and was not pointed out on any. So I ask him (Caesar) if I was not going to get my car to leave.” However, David
stated that Caesar replied no and told him that he was given permission to keep him in custody for another 72 hours. David stated, “Monday morning (July 20, 2015) around 9:30 am they (police) came and took me back to CID. Narine came and told me that I would be going home.” Instead of being released, the defendant related that he was shackled and handcuffed and taken to a city court. He recounted that Narine told him that he wanted him to “see what jail look like” and refused to tell him what offences he was being charged for. Under cross examination by Special Prosecutor Nigel Hughes, David explained that he had no problems with the police and was unaware of why they wanted him to go to jail. When prosecutor Hughes asked him how long he had the vehicle, David disclosed that he was given the car two months before his arrest as a birthday present. He added that the car is still impounded at CID. Prosecutor Hughes also asked the witness if he had informed his lawyer about what the officers did to him. In response, David said that he did not do so and pointed out that he was having a difficult time retaining an attorney at first. The defendant recounted that he spent six days in police custody and was only able to see his reputed wife after he was charged and remanded to Camp Street prison for the offences. Thereafter, Attorney Adrian Thompson declined to re-examine the witness and informed the court that his client’s reputed wife, Shanella Lee will be called as a witness. This trial will continue on May 3, in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Mohamed Shameer’s (inset) remains were found in a black plastic bag. Police at the Charity Outpost yesterday afternoon made the shocking discovery of missing Pomeroon resident Mohamed S h a m e e r ’s dismembered body in a black plastic bag, in a clump of bushes in an area in Moruca. The discovery reportedly followed Rondell Kellawan’s tip-off. Kellawan was one of the occupants of Lennox Baharally’s boat that was initially said to have collided with a boat in which Shameer was travelling. He told police that Mohamed Shameer was in fact murdered. Baharally’ s father, Compton, and Baharally’ s 13year-old son, were also in Lennox Baharally’s boat. Police have since detained Lennox Baharally and his father, who are the prime suspects. Mohamed Shameer’s sister said that her brother’s body was chopped into pieces. All the while, family members of the deceased had concluded that he was killed by Baharally, another close relative. On Monday evening, Shameer, who was afflicted by polio, was venturing to his J a c k l o w, Upper Pomeroon River home in his wooden balahoo when his boat was reportedly struck by a 75-horsepower engine vessel driven by his nephew, Lennox Baharally.
Shameer had left earlier that day to visit a friend. The labourer lived with his mother
Bibi Narjhoon. A Post Mortem is expected to be performed shortly. (Yannason Duncan)

Another charged for murder Security guard hacked of Sophia businessman to death by intruders
Murder Accused: Jamal Forde
A South Ruimveldt resident was yesterday charged and remanded to prison for the murder of Sophia businessman Shawn Anys, which occurred on May 1, last year, when he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. Jamal Forde of Plum Park, South Ruimveldt was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that he killed the businessman during the course of a robbery. Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal David Goodridge told the court that the accused was pointed out during an identification (ID) parade. The prosecutor revealed that he is still seeking further advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the way forward. Another man, Odel Roberts, 24, of ‘C’ Field Sophia was committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Anys last week at the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry in the aforementioned court. According to reports, Anys, who owned a small grocery shop, was confronted by armed bandits at his home. It was reported that the gunmen shot Anys while demanding cash and valuables from him. They reportedly made off with $40,000 cash along with jewellery. The 37-year-old businessman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul instructed Forde to return to court on May 31.
The hardware store remained closed yesterday following Abdul Sattaur Kadir’s (inset) brutal murder. A 53-year old watchman was hacked to death on Wednesday night, when he confronted two men who had entered the compound he was guarding. Abdul Sattaur Kadir, of 380 Ninth Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, less than an hour after he was picked up from his workplace, Best Buy Hardware Store at Bladen Hall, ECD. Police said that about 22:45 hours on Wednesday, the security guard was alone on duty when he challenged two men who had entered the large compound from the back. During this time, he was attacked by the men who dealt him several chops about his body with cutlasses and escaped. According to reports, persons heard Kadir’s screams but by the time help arrived, his attackers had already fled. Divisional Commander Marlon Chapman told Kaieteur News that t h e police received a call about the incident and responded, only to find Kadir lying in a pool of blood next to his guard hut.
He had been chopped to the head, face, hands, and about his torso. The Commander said that his ranks picked up the wounded man and took him to the hospital where he succumbed. This newspaper was told that after chopping the watchman, the killers made no attempt to break into the hardware store, nor did they take anything from the compound. “There was no sign of any attempt to enter the building and the owner said that nothing was stolen from the yard, although there are many pieces of equipment of immense value,” a police official on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper. It is believed that the killers are familiar with the building and compound, since they took time to turn off the lights via a switch located at the back of the building. At the dead man’s home in Foulis, his wife Maureen cried continuously as she tried to drown her grief. In between the tears she told this newspaper that her husband left home on Wednesday afternoon for work at the usual time, 17:00
hours. The woman said that just before midnight, her son woke her up to answer the telephone. Still groggy, she answered the phone and the news she got knocked the sleep completely from her eyes. “They tell me meh husband get chop and gone to the hospital.” Maureen said. She immediately dressed and rushed to the hardware store her husband was supposed to be guarding. There she met a crowd including several police ranks. According to the victim’s wife, a policeman told her that her husband was already dead. “Still me nah believe dem and me head to de hospital, me and me two children and me neighbour.” When she got to the hospital, her husband’s body was already wrapped in plastic and porters were preparing to take it to the mortuary. “Me ain’t get to see he,” the dead man’s wife cried. She said that she was not told all the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death, but she is depending on the police to quickly apprehend his killers.

Multi-million-dollar fraud at GPL…
Global Fund finds...
Charges against Ash Guyana’s treated bed net Deonarine withdrawn distribution process flawed
Two conspiracy charges against former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of the Guyana Power Light (GPL) Aeshwar Deonarine were withdrawn yesterday, after an application by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers was granted by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. Deonarine and former Director of the power company were jointly charged back in January for conspiring with each other to commit a felony (simple larceny). However, Duncan, 73, of Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, has been the only one present for the court hearings. Deonarine fled Guyana last year causing a warrant to be issued for his arrest. At a previous hearing the court was informed that Deonarine had run away to Canada. Yesterday, the charges were re-read to Duncan and he pleaded not guilty. Particulars of the first charge alleged that Duncan and Deonarine conspired with each other to commit simple larceny. He is accused of stealing $984,900 property of GPL on March 31, 2015 at Georgetown. It was also alleged that Duncan and Deonarine between May 7 and May 8, 2015 conspired with each other to steal $27,757,500 property of GPL. He is currently out on $1M bail. Prosecutor Jeffers indicated that he was ready to proceed with trial and

served Duncan with statements in relation to the simple larceny charge he is solely facing. The two former senior officials are accused of being part of a multi-million-dollar fraud at GPL. The men are alleged to have illegally transferred close to $30M to their personal bank accounts from GPL accounts. The Government had asked the police to investigate the two senior officials last July. It was reported that the men paid themselves almost $29M without authorization. In light of investigations, Deonarine was sent on administrative leave. The discoveries of the suspicious transfers were
made by independent auditors who were probing the Petro Caribe Fund, which holds proceeds of oil shipments taken from neighbouring Venezuela. It was while tracking payments to GPL that auditors unearthed the strange transactions. Deonarine, who had been the DCEO responsible for administration, had reportedly wanted to receive the same level of pay as the then DCEO (Technical), Colin Welch, but his approaches to the Board of Directors were rebuffed. He had reportedly offered to repay the money but GPL was supposed to have waited until it was transferred from his US bank account. Duncan, who is the President of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) and General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union (GTU), was instructed to return to court on May 6.
The public health sector has long been advancing its fight against malaria. Primary among its tactics has been the distribution of long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets. Guyana’s fight against malaria has for a number of years been supported by grants from the Global Fund. Global Fund is an international financing organisation that aims to attract and disburse additional resources to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shamdeo Persaud had earlier this year told this publication about 8,000 cases of malaria that were recorded by the Ministry of Public Health’s Vector Control Services Unit for the past year. But, Dr. Persaud, who was tasked with reviewing the tabulated figures, confided that there might have been some under reporting of the recorded cases. Based on his consideration of the data input into the malaria programme information system, Dr. Persaud said that he observed that there was under reporting of about 30 per cent. “There is an element of under reporting in some instances,” said the CMO, who pointed out too, that there were also instances of multiple reporting. He however noted that there has been a decline in malaria cases. And this state of affairs has been substantiated by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) which usually collaborates with the Ministry to review the reported cases. Through its VCS Unit, the Ministry has been advancing
its malaria fight by distributing treated mosquito nets. Over the course of the past two years, Dr. Persaud said that more than 70,000 nets were distributed in many of the malaria endemic areas of Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine. But based on an Investigative Report recently released by Global Fund, Guyana has not been accurately reporting on its mosquito net distribution. According to Global Fund, based on investigations done by its Office of the Inspector General (OIG), it was detected that in 2015, employees attached to the Ministry of Health’s VCS Unit had inflated the number of nets reported as distributed. In fact it was found, according to Global Fund, that the employees had fabricated underlying bed net distribution documents to support the inflated figures. Added to this, Global Fund said that VSC employees fabricated documentation for another surveillance activity relating to the operation of malaria committees. It was pointed out too that due to inaccurate record-keeping by VCS and the Ministry of Health, the OIG was unable to establish how many bed nets financed by the Global Fund had been distributed by VCS. “As a result of this fraudulent misrepresentation of information and inadequate procurement and supply management, the OIG finds that the sum of US$41,789, corresponding to the value of the bed nets, is non-compliant expenditure and therefore should be recovered,” the Report highlights. The investigation also found that a substantial proportion of the fuel purchased by VCS in the periods under review was misappropriated. These irregularities, it was pointed out, affected fuel purchases totalling US$11,290 which the OIG finds to be noncompliant and therefore potentially recoverable expenditures.
Some claims for ‘per diem’ expenses by VCS drivers in certain periods were inconsistent with entries in vehicle log books and therefore the OIG found that ‘per diem’ claims totalling US$3,887 were non-compliant expenditures and were also potentially recoverable. The investigation has concluded that the overall management of the Global Fund malaria programme by the former director of VCS and the standard of oversight exercised by a former VCS senior Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) technician were inadequate. The OIG therefore considers that this poor oversight facilitated the fraudulent misrepresentation and other irregularities identified in the investigation. Among the agreed management actions, following the resignation of the former director, the Ministry appointed an interim director and two interim deputy directors, with one having responsibility for the malaria programme. And to mitigate the risk of the issues identified in the investigation reoccurring, the OIG and the Global Fund Secretariat have agreed on a series of corrective management actions. These include requesting the Principal Recipient (the Ministry) to implement: an improved process to record the distribution of bed nets; a new longer term technology-based solution to record the whereabouts of VCS vehicles, employees and the dates and locations of programmatic activity; and an improved procurement and supply management plan to address the identified issues of inventory management and the distribution of Global Fund-financed health products. The Global Fund Secretariat will also be seeking to ensure that the terms of reference of the Local Fund Agent include spot checks of underlying programmatic documentation aimed at identifying indicators of fraudulent reporting.

120 members of Disciplined Services honoured An air of pride was abundant yesterday at the D’Urban Park tarmac as hundreds of men and women of the joint services braved the rains to witness their comrades in arms being honoured with prestigious awards by the Commanderin-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brigadier (R’td) David Granger. One hundred and twenty men and women from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) received their accolades from the Head of State. The afternoon’s proceedings began with a Parade March and concluded with a Flag- Lowering. Present at the ceremony were Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan; Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo; Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, among others. Nearby residents were joined by other curious individuals to witness the event. Like the members of the joint services, they too exhibited an unwavering spirit as the rain drenched the surrounding structures while some shook to the beat emanating from the drums of the military band. Sixty members of the Guyana Police Force received the Border Defence Medal and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, while ranks from the Guyana Defence Force were honoured with the Military Efficiency Medal and the Border Defence Medal. The Military Efficiency Medal is awarded to serving members of the GDF who would have completed ten years of continuous service with good conduct and approved by the Chief of Staff following recommendations by the Medal Awards

Enmore residents protest “uncaring” NDC In what could only be described as an unprecedented move, some residents of Hope West, Enmore, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday staged protest action outside of the Enmore Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to retaliate against a decision made by Councillors of the very party they voted into office – the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). According to the residents, following the recent Local Government Elections, the PPP was able to secure the majority of votes which translates to the NDC having 16 People’s Progressive Party councillors and two councillors representing A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC). This is reportedly the first year that a party aside from the PPP has been able to gain seats at the NDC. And the residents have linked this development to the fact that those tasked with representing the people have not been fulfilling their
mandate. It was this state of affairs that was reportedly emphasized when the NDC convened its first meeting on Wednesday April 20, 2016. According to the residents, a number of them were invited to attend the meeting to share issues affecting them in their community. But according to the residents, while some of them were able to share their issues there were others whose concerns were not given attention. The failure to address the concern of one female resident was particularly bothersome to APNU+AFC councillor, Mr. Deochand Singh. Singh told this publication that since the Standing Order allowed for residents to share their concerns they should not only be heard, but measures be outlined to remedy the highlighted concerns. According to Singh, when he appealed to the Chairman, Mr. Roopnarine, to hear the concerns of the resident, the

meeting was instead abruptly adjourned. One resident said that the woman, in her attempt to share her concern, emphasized that her vote was counted and allowed for the Chairman and the majority of the councillors to be in the
positions they hold. However, the resident said that a councillor swiftly told the woman that her vote didn’t count. The residents have concluded that the failure to hear and act on residents’ concerns has caused them to view the NDC
as uncaring. It was due to this belief that the residents said that they took the decision to plan the protest action. Choosing Wednesday to protest was deliberate, as it was the second meeting of the NDC. As the meeting proceeded,
the residents displaying placards, quietly protested outside. According to them, it is their expectation that the NDC will see the importance of acting in the interest of the people who they are mandated to serve.

Protected Areas Commission updates President on work to develop parks President David Granger met with the Chairman and Commissioners of the Board of the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), who updated him on their work

A former Guyana President... From page 5 Jagan, proposed to make National Service optional for all female university students. The Pioneer Corp, which was the greater number of service men and women, over 90%, was always voluntary. I have heard many testimonies of IndoGuyanese who attested to the invaluable role that National Service played in imbuing love for country and respect for their fellow Guyanese. That is what the PPP opposed. 4. Could Ramotar in his blanket assertion of
discrimination against Indians, identify one Indian who has been fired from the Education Sector. Yet that is one basis for him being suspicious of the sector in its attitude to Indians. 5. Ramotar’s outburst is distasteful, disrespectful and unappreciative of the hundreds of Afro-Guyanese in the Education Sector, who have over the decades nurtured the Nation’s children, including the IndoGuyanese children. The only motive that can be attributed to Ramotar’s assertion is continued ethnic
There needs to be... From page 5 his own business is that right. No one will accept that. And this is practical what GPL is saying. And it seems like public outcry does not sway the Government. We had to pay for the land that should have had the basic infrastructure so people can live. Electricity is a basic necessity of life now and the Government is holding the tax
paying citizens of the country at ransom. This is why there should be more than one company selling electricity. GPL receives billions of tax payers’ dollars from the Government every year is the purpose of that. I really think that we are being oppressed in this country. Something should be done about this. Our children have to see these plants and animals and know what they mean… our botanical gardens and parks must be a place for education,” President Granger said. said that all 10 Administrative Regions of Guyana have their own unique elements of bio-diversity and historical and cultural heritage, which makes up the country’s national patrimony and which should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. The President also spoke of the need for legislation to safeguard Guyana’s rich biodiversity and protected areas to ensure that they are managed in a sustainable way. Additionally, he pointed to the need for training of a cadre of professionals in the areas of botany, biodiversity and conservation.

Jamaica Govt. dissatisfied Venezuelans start signature with T&T oil pricing system drive for recall referendum Karl Samuda
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries Karl Samuda has signalled Jamaica’s dissatisfaction with the current oil pricing systems being used by Trinidad and Tobago. The minister did so while in Georgetown, Guyana, attending the 42nd Regular Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) and the 61st Special COTED Meeting
of Trade and Energy Ministers, from April 21-22. According to a news release from his ministry, Samuda had a bilateral meeting with his Trinidadian counterpart, Senator Paula GopeeScoon, during the 42nd COTED meeting, and expressed dissatisfaction with the system under which Trinidad & Tobago charges a premium for oil sold to its Caribbean Community (Caricom) partners.
Samuda, therefore, placed Trinidad and Tobago on notice that Jamaica will be engaging in pricing negotiations, going forward. The two ministers reportedly discussed a range of issues, including the question of T&T’s continued use of subsidies. It was confirmed by the Trinidadian Trade and Industry Minister that fuelbased subsidies have already been removed entirely from super and premium gasoline, and there has also been a 15 per cent reduction in the subsidy on diesel oil, with the T&T Government moving towards further phased reductions on diesel. At the 61st COTED Meeting on Trade and Energy, Jamaica indicated the need for a longer notification period from T&T, whenever that country is faced with supply challenges that prevent the delivery of oil supplies to Caricom States. There Is No Coordinated Effort By PSOJ Members To Boycott T&T Products – Mahfood The Gleaner - The President of the Private Sector Association of Jamaica (PSOJ), William Mahfood, says none of his members have taken a decision to boycott goods from Trinidad and Tobago. Mahfood was reacting to reports out of Trinidad that some Jamaican businesses have pulled products from the twin island republic from their store shelves and have stopped buying goods from that country at this time. The claim was made by Trinidad’s Trade Minister, Paula Gopee-Scoon, who in an interview with CNC3, said that she has been receiving information from local manufacturers that their business is being affected by the recent tension between Jamaica and Trinidad.
William Mahfood She says this has been happening over the last two weeks. Contacted by our news centre yesterday morning the PSOJ president said there is no coordinated effort by the membership of the associa-
tion to pull their support to Trinidadian products. However, he acknowledges that some retailers have taken issue with the recent tension between Jamaica and Trinidad and decided to review how they conduct business with their counterparts in Trinidad as a result. Mahwood, however, says he is unaware of any such business owners who have stopped doing business with good suppliers and manufacturers in Trinidad. The PSOJ president reiterates that he does not support a boycott of Trinidadian products. He, however, emphasises that Jamaica must take a firmer stance in securing fairer treatment for Jamaicans goods and Jamaican travellers to Trinidad.
Thousands of people came out onto the streets to sign the petition for a recall referendum BBC News - Venezuelans opposed to President Nicolas Maduro have started gathering signatures for a recall referendum. Under Venezuela’s constitution, presidents can be removed from office by means of a referendum once they have served half their term. At this earliest stage of the process, 1% of those on the electoral roll must sign the petition to start the process. Speaking as the signature
drive began, Mr Maduro dismissed the move and said he would serve out his full term. Mr Maduro was sworn into office on 19 April 2013 and has therefore served half of his six-year term. Thousands of Venezuelans queued to sign the petition in the capital, Caracas. 1. One percent of voters on the electoral roll have to sign a petition within 30 days to kick-start the process 2, Twenty percent of voters (almost four million) have
to sign a second petition in order to trigger the referendum 3. For the referendum to be successful, an equal or greater number of voters than those who elected Mr Mad u r o w o u l d h a v e t o cast their vote in favour of the recall. Mr Maduro won the 2013 election with 7,587,579 votes Miriam Leal, 54, told Agence France Presse news agency that she was signing “to end this anarchy”.
Turks and Caicos corruption trial prolonged PROVIDENCIALES, TCI — The corruption trial in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) of former government ministers and others will not be finished in 2016, according to chief prosecutor Andrew Mitchell QC. The proceedings began in December last year and were expected to last six months; however, Mitchell acknowledged that the trial is going much slower than expected. “We expect to interview about 100 witnesses and we are currently on number eight,” Mitchell told local media outside the court building in Providenciales. Mitchell went on to say that new expectations have the trial concluding sometime in 2017. The defendants include former premier Michael Misick, former deputy premier Floyd Hall, his wife Lisa, and former ministers Jeffrey Hall,
McAlister ‘Piper’ Hanchell and Lillian Boyce. Other defendants include the former speaker of the house Clayton Greene, Misick’s brother Chalmers Misick and attorney Melbourne Wilson. Trial witnesses have included one member of the current administration – appointed member of the House of Assembly Ruth Blackman, the former clerk of courts during the previous Misick administration. She has been named as a potential candidate at the next election in the British territory. Other witnesses included current Progressive National Party (PNP) treasurer Gordon Burton. Burton was not, however, able to provide the accounts of the PNP for the period 1999-2006. While he admits he has the accounts, he testified the hard copies have been rendered unreadable by
termites in his home. He also testified that the computer flash drive containing digital copies of the accounts cannot be used because he was not provided with the password. Former Governor Richard Tauwhare was expected to testify shortly after Easter. He is now expected to give evidence via video link from London. A Commission of Inquiry conducted in the first quarter of 2009 resulted in a partial suspension of the constitution of 2006, the imposition of direct rule by Britain in place of local ministerial government and the creation of a special investigation and prosecution team to investigate allegations of systemic government corruption. Elections were held in November 2012 when the same Progressive National Party, widely perceived as responsible for the widespread corruption that eventually led to the current prosecutions of former ministers, was returned to power by a one seat margin of victory. Lamaha St. accident leaves Prisoners throw feces at woman dead, one critical ranks, set fire in lockups An accident on Lamaha Street late last evening has left one woman dead and another female critical. The dead woman has been identified as Narissa Spencer of Friendship, East Coast Demerara. According to reports, the driver of a motor vehicle bearing licence plates PTT 9623, was proceeding north along Lamaha Street, between Oronoque and Albert Streets, when the vehicle struck down the woman, Narissa Spencer. The driver reportedly tried to swerve away from the woman, but despite his efforts he still hit her. As a result of swerving the car eventually toppled and came to a stand-
still on its side. A passenger in the car, an unidentified female, reportedly flew out of the vehicle through the windshield. That passenger and the now dead woman were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Accident & Emergency (A&E) unit, where Spencer was pronounced dead and the other woman listed as critical. The driver escaped with minor injuries. Narissa Spencer was reportedly crossing the street, but because of poor lighting in the area and heavy rain, the driver didn’t see her until it was too late. The car was reportedly travelling at a fast rate. This is the third such

Heavily armed ranks and firefighters were summoned to the Golden Grove Police Station yesterday after three prisoners set fires and hurled feces at policemen shortly after being taken out of their cells. Superintendent of Police Anthony Vanderhyden identified two of the prisoners as Godfrey Lynch and Travis Alexander, who were recently detained in connection with a robbery at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara. Two doors were scorched and a CCTV camera was burnt. According to a police statement, at about 06.30hrs yesterday, prisoners at the Golden Grove Police Station, East Bank Demerara, were taken out of their cells by the police for ablution purposes. “At the conclusion, three of them demanded cigarettes and refused to return to their cells after their request was denied. “The three prisoners be-

The blaze which
scorched two wooden doors and damaged a CCTV camera was extinguished and the three prisoners were subsequently replaced in their cells in the lockups.” Superintendant Vanderhyden told reporters that 13 prisoners were being housed at the station at the time. They have been detained for offences ranging from break-and-enter, robbery and murder.
Indian PM invited to address US Congress in June Trump attacks Clinton on gender, risking backlash from women Reuters - Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump waded into politically risky territory this week when he accused Democrat Hillary Clinton of exploiting her gender to win votes and said she would have little support if she were not a woman. As Trump and Clinton, fresh off big wins in five Northeastern state primaries on Tuesday, circled each other for a potential matchup in the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election, his comments portended what could be an unusually nasty campaign. Like other controversial remarks during his White House campaign, Trump’s comments drew criticism from a wide spectrum but also reinforced his image - which has been attractive to some supporters - for plain talk that
defies political norms. “The only thing she’s got going is the fact that she’s a woman,” Trump, 69, said yesterday on NBC’s “Today” show, refusing to back down from targeting Clinton, 68, for what he called “playing the woman’s card.” Trump’s remarks, reaching into an area of gender attacks that is conventionally seen as off-limits, energized Democrats. “Keep talking, Donald Trump,” Democratic Committee National Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz told CNN on Wednesday. “Every single day when Donald Trump opens his mouth, he does more to alienate women.” Trump, unfazed by the criticism, told supporters in Evansville, Indiana, that he has gotten a bad rap.
“Nobody cherishes and nobody respects women more than Donald Trump,” he said after being introduced by famed former Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight. “I will be so much better to women than Hillary Clinton.” Trump, who can be as free with his personal attacks on men, has consistently polled poorly with women. Democrats and Republicans both accuse Trump of sexism over verbal insults lobbed at Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and former Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina.
Washington (AFP) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a joint meeting of the US Congress on June 8 during the leader’s visit to Washington, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced yesterday. The speech will be the fifth to a joint meeting of Congress by an Indian premier, and the first since 2005. “This address presents a special opportunity to hear from the elected leader of the world’s most populous democracy on how our two nations can work together to promote our shared values and to increase prosperity,”
Ryan said. “The friendship between our nations is a pillar of stability in a very, very important region.” Modi’s congressional speech will be the first by a foreign leader since Ryan took up the speaker’s post last October. A meeting between the Indian leader and President Barack Obama has not yet been finalized, the White House said. “We’re in conversations with them about scheduling a visit,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters. “The president has a strong working relationship
with Prime Minister Modi,” Earnest added, noting the Indian premier’s attendance in Washington last month at the Nuclear Security Summit and his “important role” in ensuring successful completion of the Paris climate talks last year. Some 175 nations including India and the United States signed the deal this month at the United Nations. Obama, now in the final year of his two-term presidency, made an official visit to India in January 2015 — his second since taking office — when Modi hosted him and First Lady Michelle Obama at a state dinner.

Iran asks U.N. chief to intervene with U.S. after court ruling
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon shakes hands with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at U.N. headquarters in New York. REUTERS/SHANNON STAPLETON Reuters - Iran asked U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon yesterday to convince the United States to stop violating state immunity after the top U.S. court ruled that $2 billion (1.36 billion pounds) in frozen Iranian assets must be paid to American victims of attacks blamed on Tehran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Javid Zarif wrote to Ban a week after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, calling on the Secretary-General to use his “good offices in order to induce the U.S. Government to adhere to its international obligations.” Zarif ’s appeal comes amid increasing Iranian frustration at what they say is the failure of the United States to keep its promises regarding sanctions relief agreed under an historic nuclear deal struck last year by Tehran and six world powers. In the letter, released by the Iranian U.N. mission, Zarif asked Ban to help se-
cure the release of frozen Iranian assets in U.S. banks and persuade Washington to stop interfering with Iran’s international commercial and financial transactions. “The U.S Executive branch illegally freezes Iranian national assets; the U.S Legislative branch legislates to pave the ground for their illicit seizures; and the U.S Judicial branch issues rulings to confiscate Iranian assets without any base in law or fact,” Zarif said. Ban’s spokesman and the U.S. mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the letter or the accusations made against the United States. Zarif told Ban he wanted to “alert you and through you the U.N. general membership about the catastrophic implications of the U.S. blatant disrespect for state immunity, which will cause systematic erosion of this fundamental
principle.” The U.S. Supreme Court found that the U.S. Congress did not usurp the authority of American courts by passing a 2012 law stating that Iran’s frozen funds should go towards satisfying a $2.65 billion judgement won by the U.S. families against Iran in U.S. federal court in 2007. “It is in fact the United States that must pay long overdue reparations to the Iranian people for its persistent hostile policies,” Zarif wrote, citing incidents including the shooting of an Iranian civil airliner in 1988. Last week Zarif met several times with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in New York to discuss Iranian problems accessing international financial markets. Tehran has called on the United States to do more to remove obstacles to the banking sector so that businesses feel comfortable investing in Iran without fear of penalties.
North Korea test-fires two missiles, both fail - U.S Reuters - North Korea test-fired what appeared to be two intermediate range ballistic missiles yesterday, but both failed, the U.S. military said, in a setback for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ahead of next week’s ruling party congress. The isolated nation has conducted a series of missile launches in violation of U.N. resolutions ahead of the Workers’ Party congress which begins on May 6. South Korea also says North is ready to conduct a new
nuclear test at any time. China said the U.N. Security Council was working on a response to North Korea’s latest missile tests, while U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Pyongyang to cease “further provocative actions.” yesterday’s tests looked to have been hurried, according to a defence expert in Seoul, and follow a failed launch of a similar missile earlier this month. The first launch, at about 6:40 a.m. local time (2140 GMT Wednesday) from near the east coast city of Wonsan,
appeared to have been of a Musudan missile with a range of more than 3,000 km (1,800 miles) which crashed within seconds, a South Korean defence ministry official said. Later, at around 7:26 p.m., the North shot a similar intermediate range missile from the same area, but the launch was also understood to have failed, the official added. The U.S. military’s Strategic Command said it tracked two attempted launches, neither of which posed a threat to North America.

No Curry, no worry as Warriors eliminate Rockets The Sports Xchange The Golden State Warriors did not skip a beat without key point guard Stephen Curry, routing the Houston Rockets 114-81 on Wednesday to seal a 4-1 series triumph in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The defending NBA
champs will move on to face either the Portland Trail Blazers or Los Angeles Clippers. If the Trail Blazers, up 3-2 in the series, can finish off the injury-ravaged Clippers at home today, the Western semi-final best-of-seven would start on Sunday in Oakland. The Warriors almost surely will be without Curry for
most, if not all, of the secondround series after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Game 4 against the Rockets on Sunday. Golden State improved to 4-2 without the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player by winning the series clincher against the Rockets, with vet-
Firm Rohit, fiery Pollard... (From page 37) Rohit and Ambati Rayudu struck 10 boundaries in 34 balls and as Kieron Pollard, playing his 100th IPL match, muscled his way to an unbeaten 17-ball fifty and sealed victory with his sixth six of the night. Gambhir, though, did not hide behind any excuses. He said the batsmen should have scored 15 more runs and added that as international cricketers they should know how to deal with dew. It was a case of adapting to a tough situation - as he himself did while batting. A sweet timer of the ball on the off side, bowlers often try to tuck him up to keep him quiet. So Gambhir opened up
his stance, which helped him clear the front foot quicker, allowing a smoother bat swing when he hit through midwicket. Twenty-two of his 59 runs came in that region, including a six and two fours. Mumbai could have dismissed him on 8 but Mitchell McClenaghan fluffed a simple caught-and-bowled chance in the second over. The other Knight Riders opener Robin Uthappa was given a life on 35 when Parthiv Patel missed a run-out. Chris Lynn, who was brought in to lengthen the batting in place of fast bowler Morne Morkel, was dropped on 2 by Tim Southee, and when Yusuf Pathan offered a
chance at redemption one ball later, Southee dropped the catch and conceded a boundary. No such mistakes plagued Mumbai’s batting, with Rohit’s timing and Pollard’s brute force finishing the game off with 12 balls to spare. The only thing that went right for the Knight Riders was their catching. A fine grab from Yusuf at slip got rid of Parthiv in the second over of the chase. Suryakumar Yadav took a sharp catch at the long-on boundary to bring Rayudu down. Lynn capped things off in the 13th over when he leapt up at long-off to take a catch on the edge of the boundary, popped the ball up before the momentum pushed him out of bounds and came back in to complete the dismissal. Jos Buttler had to walk back for 15 and Mumbai still needed 69 off 42 balls. In walked Pollard, who had seemed a bit slow in the field perhaps because of the knee injury that kept him out of the World T20. But with bat in hand, he looked very assured. He struck his third ball for four, pelted three sixes in the 16th over - curiously bowled by R Sathish - and bashed three more in the 18th to wrap things up. ”Pollard is peaking at the right time,” Rohit said at the presentation. The West Indian had come into the match with only 71 runs in his last six innings. While Pollard’s contribution is a good sign for Mumbai going forward, tonight’s chase was built on Rohit’s unbeaten 68. He began with a rip-roaring six over square leg and pushed on with a pristine cover drive. None of his shots taxed him for effort and yet the ball simply flew away. His composure was also noteworthy and seeing off tight spells from Shakib Al Hasan (1 for 30) and Sunil Narine (2 for 22) went a long way in handing Knight Riders their second loss of the season. Mumbai Indians 178 for 4 (Rohit 68*, Pollard 51*, Narine 2-22) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 174 for 5 (Gambhir 59, Uthappa 36, Southee 2-38) by six wickets. (ESPNcricinfo)
eran Shaun Livingston stepping into Curry’s starting role and contributing 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Ten of Livingston’s points came on 4-for-4 shooting and a pair of free throws in the first quarter, during which the Warriors scored the first eight points and suffocated every Rocket not named James Harden en route to a 37-20 lead. Harden had 18 points in the quarter, hitting six of eight shots. Meanwhile, his team mates never made a hoop in the 12 minutes, going 0-for15 from the field and 0-for-7 from 3-point range. Dwight Howard’s two free throws provided the only Houston scoring other than by Harden in the period. Harden finished with a game-high 35 points to go with six rebounds and a team-
high six assists, but it was not nearly enough to overcome a balanced Warriors attack. Klay Thompson led Golden State with 27 points, burying 10 of 14 shots and seven of 11 3-point attempts. The Warriors finished 13for-31 from beyond the arc, outscoring the Rockets 39-18 from long range despite taking two fewer attempts. Houston went 6-for-33 on 3-pointers, with Harden making three of seven tries. Draymond Green contributed 15 points and team highs in rebounds (nine) and assists (eight) to the win, which was Golden State’s 42nd in 44 home games this season. Andre Iguodala had six points and six assists, and Brandon Rush was good for 15 points off the Warriors’ bench. Howard dominated the
backboards with 21 rebounds. However, he missed 10 of 13 shots and finished with just eight points. Houston’s starters other than Harden shot a combined 8-for-33 and totaled 19 points. Michael Beasley had 11 points off the Houston bench, but he got little help from the Rockets’ reserve crew. The other Houston reserves combined to miss 21 of their 27 shots and totaled 16 points. The Rockets shot just 32.3 percent from the field, including just 28.3 percent (13for-46) in the first half while falling behind by as many as 22. Golden State made 54.9 percent of its field-goal attempts. The Warriors led by as many as 33 points in the third quarter and 34 late in the game.

Villarreal’s Adrian sinks Liverpool in FIFA President takes part in stoppage time in Europa League Thailand FA’s 100-year celebrations
Adrian had the simple task of slotting into the net to finally find the goal that put Villarreal in charge of the semi-final tie Liverpool’s ambitions of reaching their first European final in almost a decade suffered a blow as Villarreal netted an injury-time winner in the first leg. After a first half of few chances, Cedric Bakambu’s header clipped the Reds upright shortly after the break. Liverpool went closest when Roberto Firmino’s low shot hit the post. The Reds looked set for a creditable draw in Spain until they switched off to allow
substitute Adrian Lopez to tap in Denis Suarez’s low cross. Despite the dramatic winner, the Europa League semi-final still remains delicately poised before next Thursday’s return leg at Anfield. The winners will face either Spanish holders Sevilla or Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, who drew 2-2 in their first leg, in the Swiss city of Basel on 18 May. Liverpool have not
reached a European final since losing to AC Milan in the 2007 Champions League showpiece, but a stoic display at La Liga’s fourth-placed team looked set to leave them a home win away from ending that barren run. However, the Premier League side lost their defensive discipline in the final few seconds - and it could prove crucial. Left-back Alberto Moreno wandered up field, leaving the space for former Manchester City youngster Suarez to exploit before squaring to Lopez for the easiest of finishes. ”Where did the left-back disappear to?” asked BBC Radio 5 live and former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson. “Injury time at 0-0 in a Europa League semi-final - and he’s probably 70 metres up the pitch.”0-0 would have been a very good result. All of a sudden because of one aberration and you’re under pressure for the second leg.” Despite throwing away a goalless draw, Liverpool know they still have to score to go through in 90 minutes at Anfield. But, equally, Villarreal know an away goal would mean the Reds then need at least three goals. (BBCsport)
FIFA President Infantino at ceremony to celebrate Thailand’s 100th anniversary
FIFA President Infantino participated today in Bangkok in the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT). Despite having never reached the FIFA World Cup™ finals, the men’s team is in the midst of its qualifying phase for Russia 2018 and reached the final round of the Asian qualifiers for the second time in its history. This adds up to a great performance from the women’s team, which last year qualified for its maiden FIFA
Women’s World Cup. Aiming at strengthening the development of football in the country, FIFA and FAT are preparing a strategic plan encompassing technical, infrastructure, management and marketing components. ”Thailand’s steady development in different areas of the game is a remarkable example of how important it is that FIFA keeps on investing to develop football across its member associations worldwide. I wish the new leadership of the FAT under the Presidency of Somyot
Poompanmoung every success in their mission, with the help of FIFA as well, to push Thailand’s football forward,” stated the FIFA President. In addition to meeting the FAT’s leadership, the FIFA President also had a meeting with Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. Thailand hosted two FIFA tournaments in the past: the second edition of the then U-19 (now U20) FIFA Women’s World Cup, in 2004, as well as the last edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2012.ý (FIFA.com)

F1 drivers fear another wrong turn with 2017 rules Formula One drivers expressed concern yesterday that the sport was heading in the wrong direction with its plans for a 2017 rules revamp. Teams have until tomorrow to approve the regulations by majority vote, rather than unanimous agreement, and have already hammered out most of the details in meetings over the past few months. The plans are for cars and tyres to be wider and more aggressive looking, making them more exciting and harder to handle while also producing closer racing. Drivers fear, however, that aerodynamic changes will instead make it harder for cars to follow and overtake. ”You hope that the engineers who know what’s going to happen — just like they knew with the qualifying — I hope they are proven wrong,” triple world champion Lewis Hamilton told reporters at the Russian Grand Prix. ”If they aren’t, then we’re stuck in that period for
three years and for the fans, it doesn’t get any better. But those guys who made the decision have to live with it,” said the Mercedes driver. Formula One revised its qualifying format this season in a bid to shake up starting grids but the move was derided as a fiasco, by fans and teams alike, and scrapped after two races. Hamilton’s team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg said he had hoped the teams would have second thoughts about the 2017 changes. ”Our opinion was that it’s not the right direction to go,” he said. “Now that’s the way it is, so now all we can do is accept it and make the most of it and hope that there are going to be some surprises.” Mercedes have been dominant since the 1.6 liter V6 turbo hybrid power units were introduced in 2014, the team winning 35 of 41 races. Fury labels Klitschko boring, no-risk fighter British heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury has accused Wladimir Klitschko of being a boring, no-risk fighter as he stoked the flames ahead of their rematch in July. Fury stunned Ukrainian Klitschko in Dusseldorf in November to win the WBA, WBO and IBF belts, although he has since relinquished the IBF title, which was then claimed by fellow Briton Anthony Joshua. ”Wladimir is a no risk fighter,” Fury, who will
put his belts on the line when he faces Klitschko in Manchester on July 9, told a news conference yesterday. “He doesn’t want to take any risks so he might talk a good game that he is going to come and try fight but I’m yet to see him do it in all of his fights. The only entertaining one he ever had was when he lost by a knockout. So that’s what happens when he tries to fight.” Klitschko had been world champion since 2006 when he was beaten on points by Fury,
who is unbeaten in 25 professional fights — 18 of them won by knockout. The Ukrainian has previously referred to Fury as a clown, a slur the Briton dismissed. ”I just want to address what Wladimir said about the clown thing,” he said. “Call me a clown, call me circus act, call me fat, ugly, bald. Even call me Sue if you want but don’t call me Wladimir Klitschko because that’s an insult.” (Reuters)

Hornets push Heat to the brink with Game Five win The Sports Xchange Courtney Lee did it again. From virtually the same spot on the floor and for the second game in a row, Lee grabbed a crucial long rebound off the offensive boards. This time, Lee went back up and drained a 3pointer with 28.9 seconds left, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a 90-88 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday at AmericanAirlines Arena. Lee also had a key block on Heat guard Dwyane Wade with 2.6 seconds left. But Lee’s heroics started with his rebound. ”I guess his anticipation,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said when asked how the 6-5 Lee grabbed the biggest boards two games in a row. “He’s a terrific athlete, and he has good timing.” Thanks in large measure to Lee, the Hornets, who have won three straight games, have a 3-2 lead over Miami in their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Charlotte can end the best-of-
seven series with a win at home today. Miami, who have won 21 of their past 28 playoff series, still have a shot but the Heat will likely have to play better in the clutch to advance. The Heat led 88-87 in Wednesday’s final minute. Hornets guard Kemba Walker missed a jumper, and that is when Lee swooped in. He not only grabbed the rebound, he also made the shot even though he was only 1-of-8 from the floor at the time. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said he noticed Lee was in “the deep corner” of the court when the key sequence began. ”(Wade) went to block out (Hornets center Cody Zeller),” Spoelstra said. “It was a long rebound, and those end up being pursuits. ... It was a tough bounce, a long bounce. Then it becomes a scramble. And we didn’t scramble.” Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Lee made Charlotte’s big play. After all,
Charlotte Hornets guard Courtney Lee (1) is pressured by Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside (21) and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade (3) during the first half in game five of the first round of the NBA Playoffs. Steve Mitchell-USA Lee is the only Hornets player with NBA Finals experience, having played for the 2009 Orlando Magic. After Lee’s 3-pointer,

Pulsating ‘fights’ expected at Gymnasium from tonight By Sean Devers The much anticipated first ever Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Tournament in the English speaking Caribbean punches off at the National Gymnasium from 18:00hrs tonight. The tournament, which includes host Guyana, St Lucia and Jamaica, concludes tomorrow evening. The two-night card promises lots of fistic fury and the opportunity of ‘big ring’ experience for the younger pugilists. Fans are being encouraged to support the boxers as they compete in the developmental stage of their careers. Admission is $500 for anyone over 12 while those under that age will be admitted free. The championship is being hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA); Barbados and Antigua were also approached but both countries were unable to take up the offer. Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda National Boxing team Stephen Butters confirmed that he was asked but due to lack of funding his association was forced to decline the offer. According to GBA President Steve Ninvalle, the tournament, which is a part of Guyana’s 50th Independence year of events, was a followup to the 13-nation Interna-
tional Goodwill Championship which Guyana hosted last November. Ninvalle said despite the difficulties of funding for the tournament he is optimistic that the event could be annual. Guyana’s Head Coach Sebert Blake, a former National and Caribbean Boxing Champion, said that while winning is important he feels at this stage of their fledging careers, the experience and exposure gained from participation should prove more valuable to the boxing development of the youngsters. Blake, a former Pan American Bantamweight Bronze Medalist and three times Caribbean Gold Medalist, said he is satisfied with the talent displayed in the Camp which was held at the Gymnasium. The 32-year-old Blake, who retired from the ring after failing to make it to the 2000 Olympics explained that the Guyanese will participate in the Junior, Youth, Schoolboys and female categories. ”We had 15-20 junior Boxers (U-19) and Youth (U-17) in the camp while there were about 15-20 Schoolboys (U15). Three girls, all from Linden, will also be on show” said Blake, who was named National Coach of the year in 2010.
”Guyana will have two teams (an ‘A’ & ‘B’ team) in the international bouts and
some of the promising youngsters who will be on show are Christopher Moore, Akiel Mounter, Keevin Allicock and Isaiah Moore, the son of national Champion Leon Moore,” Blake informed. Blake disclosed that Sean Graham is the youngest at nine years while 13-year-old Shaqency Wright and 11year-old Devon have shown good promise. He informed that the three female boxers, Akea Lamzion, Rianna Rogers and Rondesa Baggot are Under-15s. The St Lucia three-man team which comprises of Light Welterweight Nathan Ferrari, Lightweight Kareem Boyce and Welterweight Taj Brown are being coached by Conrad Hunte, a former Guyanese boxer. They touched down here on Tuesday and are being housed at the Ocean View Hotel. Ferrari was named St Lucia’s Best Junior Boxer of 2015, and Brown recently competed at an international tournament in Guadeloupe. The Jamaican team of Joshua Forrest Davidson (69 kg), Daniel Hylton (60 kg), Jerone Enniss (69kg) - Light Welterweight and Jerrone Enniss, Coached by Robert Napier were expected to arrive last night. The official weighin and Medicals will be done today.
Wade, who had a gamehigh 25 points, had a chance to tie the score w h e n h e drove the left baseline, drawing Zeller in front and Lee trailing. Lee got the block, but the Heat thought Wa d e was hacked. ”I thought I did,” Wade said when asked if he got fouled. “But it wasn’t called.
It’s pointless now. There’s no reason for me to look at it.” Spoelstra said he does not need replay, either. “I don’t need to,” Spoelstra said about any video. “He got fouled.” There were seven lead changes in the game. Charlotte had a 14-0 run in the first quarter and a 15-3 surge in the second but still led just 49-47 at halftime. Miami surged to a
71-65 lead after three quarters. The Heat held Charlotte to 26.1-percent shooting in the quarter, outscoring the Hornets 24-16. Overall, the Heat won most of the hustle categories. They were plus-nine on rebounds, plus-seven on second-chance points, plus-nine on fast-break points and plus14 on paint points. But here’s where the Hornets prevailed: They made 12-of-24 on 3-pointers compared to 5-of-18 for Miami. The Hornets survived on a night in which Walker, who had been averaging 25 points in the series, was held to 14 on 4-of-18 shooting. Walker, though, was understandably upbeat as his team prevailed. “We want to go home and win,” he said. “That’s our mindset right now.” Wednesday’s game was the first time in the series that the home team lost. “It hurts losing at home,” Spoelstra said. “But welcome to the playoffs. The playoffs just started. When a team beats somebody on the road, OK, now it gets real. As raw as this feels, we have 48 hours to regroup and get ready for a heck of a battle.”
Shabazz wants to see more... (From page 39) current Finale leaders Slingerz FC midfielder Tischard Joseph who seemed to come from nowhere and started in the CFU Qualifiers against Anguilla and Puerto Rico. ”Tischard is easily one of the more dominant players in the Elite League and literally selected himself into a starting spot. The talent of a player on paper and in our minds is one thing but the effort and attitude of the player on the pitch is the reality I value more.” In looking at the midfielders for the game against Canada, Shabazz was happy to see Brandon Beresford land a contract in the USA and says he will be looking at a more youthful midfield for the match. ”I am pleased to see Brandon earn himself a contract in Rochester, he did well for us last June for the World Cup Qualifiers but for CFU he did not come in with that fire in his belly. This contract should boost his confidence because he is one of our key players. ”I want to see more from Konata, Nobrega and Wilson when it comes to closing the ball down and competing with opponents for midfield dominance. After all this is the na-
tional team not a trade fair.” Reflecting on the heart of the midfield of past Guyana players he has worked with Shabazz sang praises for the work ethic of Kayode McKinnon and deceased duo of Shawn Bishop and Neil Hernandez. ”Kayode was a worker and not short on talent similar to Hernandez and well, Shawn Bishop was easily my favorite player. When you consider that these guys had a player with Chris Nurse’ work rate on the bench.....you appreciate what they brought to the Jaguars back then.” Looking to the future players Shabazz says he will not rule out the possibility of calling a couple young
midfielders who are showing potential in the Elite League. ”I like what I am seeing of GFC’s Curtis Kellman and Lennox “Tiger” Cort while Kevin Layne of Monnerderlust, Jahall Greaves and Dwayne Lindie of Conquerors are certainly under our radar. ”You never know maybe one of them may feature against Canada. I like to take risks with young players because in coaching it is how the ugly duckling can develop into a beautiful swan,” added Shabazz. Guyana plays Canada on May 15 at the Providence Stadium as part of the 50th Anniversary Independence celebrations.

Government commits $20M to host CBC U-16 Championships By Edison Jefford Government yesterday committed $20 million as a prerequisite to Guyana’s Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) to assist in hosting the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under-16 Championships in July. The CBC Executive Evaluation Commission, which is currently in Guyana with CBC President, Glyne Clarke, needed the commitment from Government to ensure Guyana’s capacity to host the Championships, which was last held here in 1999. Minister of Education, which is the ministry that is responsible for sport, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine made it clear that Guyana is proud to be host of the 2016 Championships at a meeting with CBCs Clarke and Vice-President, Patrick Haynes. “We are happy to be hosts; we have an interest in not only hosting events but also developmental work. We are happy to host these events because it puts Guyana on show,” Roopnaraine said, as he informed that Cabinet commits to the requisite $20 million. The minister indicated that the benefits of hosting such a mega event must be pursued. “We want to advance sport in our schools in a serious way; we will be anx-
ious to see a programme of worth that recognises a lot of capacity building,” he said. Clarke was elated with Government’s position. He congratulated the GABF, while indicating his satisfaction of the physical structure required for the Championships, though some amount of the necessary upgrade is to be done before jump-ball in July. “What we saw made us very hopeful. Guyana has always been at the forefront of our basketball in the Caribbean; Guyana has always been gracious hosts. We were assured that all the works to be completed are mostly cosmetic,” he said. “We want to thank Government for coming up with this contribution,” he added. The gathering was informed that the last CBC U-16 Championships was held in 2008. Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry spoke of the social impact of the Championships. Henry said that the investment is being made in youth. She stated that it is important that they are exposed to different cultures. “We are happy to host the Championships, but what is important is the capacity building,” she said. “We hope to have some networking and mentorship programmes done. This is an
investment in our young people. We are looking at this in terms of human development. We are looking at this as more than sports,” the minister indicated. “There will be lots of opportunities and we want to ensure that we maximise those opportunities to ensure we get the required value,” she continued. GABF President, Nigel Hinds thanked both ministers for their commitment to its vision for the sport. “We at the GABF are very grateful for the efforts and commitment of the Government. We had a vision that is now becoming a reality. This will not be just an event that takes place and vanishes. It will have lots of spinoffs,” Hinds concurred yesterday. “This is a step in the right direction. We are in need of a sports culture. We believe that this is a great investment in Guyana’s youth. We are grateful to Government and the Ministry of Education. This is a wonderful moment for us,” Hinds concluded. The Caribbean Confederation through its per diem programme will add 25 percent of the budget to host the event while the other budgetary sums will come from corporate sponsorship. Hinds is hoping that corporate Guyana grab this opportunity.

Firm Rohit, fiery Pollard gun down 175 A dropped catch and a botched run-out attempt left Mumbai Indians coach Ricky Ponting a bit sheepish, during a mid-innings interview, as he admitted a few things hadn’t gone to plan after they chose to bowl in the final match at Wankhede stadium for IPL 2016. The batting, though, couldn’t have gone smoother. Rohit Sharma struck his fourth fifty in four chases this season and nothing the Kolkata Knight
Riders could do made a difference. There were six bowling options that Gautam Gambhir could use - all of them had played international cricket - to defend a total of 174 which he had helped build with his 29th half-century in the IPL. But his team relies on the spinners to effect a slowdown and drive the batsman into panicking. That was not possible with dew gathering on the outfield, making it quicker, and

Shabazz wants to see more intensity from midfielders Kaieteur Sport starts a new series of discussion with National Football Coach Jamaal Shabazz as we get into his mind for Guyana’s upcoming clash with Canada. Today Shabazz focuses on his midfield. ”A very combative game played with a high level of intensity!” This is how National Coach Jamaal Shabazz described the Slingerz FC vs Alpha United clash which ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening last at the GDF ground. With Guyana’s clash against Canada’s Olympic team carded for next month Shabazz welcomes the intense battles and is urging the midfielders in the country to emulate the efforts of Golden Jaguars Captain Christopher Nurse in the way he closes down opponents and combats in midfield. ”We have a lot of midfielders who can play but they also allow the opponents to play, there is not enough aggression and desire shown to close the ball down. “And this is what
Shawn Bishop
Kayode McKinnon
Chris Nurse does, he battles; and unless the other midfielders increase their ability to challenge the opponents it’s difficult for them to take his place in the team. ”Even Neil Danns is a warrior in midfield so having talent is not enough anymore at international level. Because you are playing against a country’s best and passion and aggression must match talent, he added. Pointing to the likes of Konata Mannings, Travis Grant, Clive Nobrega,
Daniel Wilson, Tichard Joseph and Brandon Beresford Shabazz said. ”They are all talented lads but who is going to die on the field before they let the opponent past them? Polite players are nice to know but they don’t win matches..... The modern midfielder must close down players and get better at sealing off space and blocking passing lanes.” Shabazz reviewed the improvements made by Elite League Genesis winners and
