Obama exhorts Britain to stay in EU, warns on trade if it leaves

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama made a bold intervention into the politics of Washington’s closest ally yesterday, exhorting Britons to stay in the EU and warning that if they left they would be at “the back of the queue” for a U.S. trade deal. Obama’s plea to British voters ahead of a June referendum on membership of the European Union was welcomed by Prime Minister David Cameron and other supporters of the EU, but denounced by those campaigning to leave as meddling in British affairs. Britain’s influence on the world stage was “magnified” by its membership of the 28-member bloc, Obama said at a press conference alongside Cameron, who has bet his political future by calling the referendum to put to rest an issue that has divided his own Conservative Party for generations. Rebutting criticism that he was interfering, Obama invoked the cherished “special relationship” between Washington and London. “If one of our best friends is in an organization that enhances their influence and enhances their power and enhances their economy, then I want them to stay in it,” Obama said. “Or at least I want to be able to tell them: ‘I think this makes you guys bigger players.’” On trade, he took aim at one of the main “Out” arguments — that Britain could easily negotiate deals and get better terms on its own. The United States would regard a deal with the EU as a higher priority than a separate agreement with a much smaller market such as a stand-alone Britain, Obama said. “It’s fair to say that maybe some point down the line there might be a UK-US trade agreement but that’s not going to happen anytime soon because our focus is negotiating with a big bloc, the European Union, to get a trade agreement done,” Obama said. “And the UK is going to be in the back of the queue, not because we don’t have a special relationship but because given the heavy lift on any trade agreement, us having access to a big market with a lot of countries rather than trying to do piecemeal trade agreements is hugely efficient.” Cameron said Britain should listen to its friends, and he could not think of any close ally who wanted a Brexit. Obama set out his case in a newspaper article that invoked the interlinked history of the United States and Brit-

U.S. President Barack Obama meets Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron in 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, yesterday. (Reuters/ Facuno Arrizabalaga/Pool) ain and the tens of thousands of Americans lying in European war graves. “As your friend, I tell you that the EU makes Britain even greater,” the headline read. “Together, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have turned centuries of war in Europe into decades of peace, and worked as one to make this world a safer, better place,” Obama wrote. “DOWNRIGHT HYPOCRITICAL” But those campaigning for an “Out” vote in the June 23 referendum were dismissive. London’s New York-born Mayor Boris Johnson, a leader of the “Out” campaign from within the Conservative Party widely seen as angling for Cameron’s job, said Obama’s advice was “incoherent, inconsistent and downright hypocritical”. Obama was urging Britain to pool its sovereignty with other nations in a way that the United States would never countenance for itself, Johnson wrote in a newspaper column. He also referred to “the part-Kenyan President’s ancestral dislike of the British empire”, a comment widely criticized as demeaning the EU debate, and even denounced as “dog-whistle racism” by an opposition Labour politician. Other “Out” campaigners said Obama’s views did not matter because this is his last year in office. “Obama doesn’t have the authority to deny us a (trade) deal, as he will be long gone before any such proposals are on the table,” said Richard Tice, co-founder of Leave.EU, one of several “Out” campaigns. Experts struggled to find a precedent for Obama’s direct appeal to British voters. “It is the biggest interven-

tion I can think of by an American president who has turned up in this way and intervened directly in the politics of a Western democracy since the end of the Cold War,” said Anand Menon, professor of European politics and foreign affairs at Kings College London. “It is above and beyond what people do in Western democracies. And if you think as I do that it is a fear thing, then it works.” Opinion polls suggest that “In” is ahead, but the race is tight and the number of undecided voters is very high. Many U.S. banks and companies fear a Brexit would cause market turmoil, diminish the clout of Washington’s strongest European ally, hurt London’s global financial hub status, cripple the EU and weaken Western security. The “Out” campaign says such fears are exaggerated and Britain would profit from greater control over its regulation, the ability to make bilateral trade deals and the right to restrict immigration from EU neighbors. Many in the “Out” camp say they are passionate supporters of the special relationship with the United States and think Britain would open itself up to America and to the world if it cut loose from what they regard as the dysfunctional EU. Before talks at Cameron’s Downing Street office, Obama and his wife Michelle congratulated Queen Elizabeth, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday. Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s 94-year-old husband, took the wheel of a Range Rover to drive the Obamas to lunch on the territory of Windsor Castle, a royal residence that traces its history back over almost 1,000 years to William the Conqueror.

Zika affects foetus’s development Notes on criminal behavior in... throughout pregnancy

From page 5 programs conducted in the prisons were riddled with favoritism and corruption. This led to the prison becoming a revolving door. Over the last few years I observed as the crime situation in Guyana grew precipitously worse because the environment existed for it to thrive. Guyana has one of the highest rates of recidivism in the Caribbean; with 7 or 8 out of every 10 released prisoners returning to prison. We also have a very young prison population; with 75% of our inmates between the ages of 18-35. That is why Guyana needs a stop-gap program to intercept the guys when they come out of prison. The justification for a rehab center is to counter what is now pervasive in our society. As it stands, the older criminals are recruiting and training the younger ones, then loaning

them their guns to commit these heinous crimes. An exoffender’s rehabilitation will have the reverse effect. The program will serve to have those rehabilitated former inmates mentor the troubled youths. Also, the government will have a team of former criminals at their disposal to serve as point men and a think-thank for their crime fighting. Crime has continued to flourish even with this government because, like with the past administration, they are embroiled in many distractions. They too are unable to focus sufficiently on the crime situation. The double whammy of the criminal upsurge and the prison riots seem to have knocked the Public Security Ministry off their stride. Both situations were festering for a long time under the past government but now they have landed at the doorsteps of this admin-

istration. What this government has going for it is their newness, coupled with the credibility of President Granger. Because of this, folks are willing to give them time and to be lenient with them. However, this will not last forever. They should use this honeymoon period to regroup, flush themselves of the current distracting issues and double down on moving the country forward. Editor, to every one person I know coming for the Jubilee celebrations, I know two who are afraid to return because of the crime situation. Guyana has great developmental potential among our Caribbean counterparts, by way of our minerals and people. However, if the government – any government does not get a handle of the crime epidemic, our greatness will remain only a potential. Wendell Jeffrey

I would just like to say to you as one human being to another, as one woman to another; I know that life can be hard, difficult, tough, unfair and frustrating... I know that people can be unkind, abusive, uncaring and difficult. I know that the system, people and things can come at you from all angles and you sometimes feel like giving up and as if life is not worth living anymore but in all of my going through, two things kept me going; a few people who I know have my back, and I have learnt to fight back. One of the best things someone has said to me in my difficult times was, ‘I got you, I have your back’. I would therefore like to extend this invitation to you

- PAHO Country Representative Based on new research, the Zika virus can affect the development of the brain of the unborn throughout pregnancy, not just in the first trimester as was previously reported, Pan American Health Country Representative William Adu-Krow has said. He stated that new research has emerged revealing that a baby’s development can be affected throughout the pregnancy making it critical for pregnant women to protect themselves by sleeping under nets, and taking other measures to avoid being bitten by the mosquito, that is the vector for the virus. He noted that since it is sexually transmitted to people, especially pregnant women, should use a condom during sex. He also advised that persons who are planning to have babies should reconsider until the situation is controlled. To date, there are six recorded cases of the virus in Guyana, but Adu-Krow stated that this figure might be higher since there are a lot of unreported cases in Guyana. “Some people might have it and chose not to go to a health centre or the hospitals,” he said, suggesting that there should be active surveillance of the vector and the virus. He said the unreported cases make it difficult to monitor the situation.

In February, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a global pandemic and a public health emergency of international concern. The organization then called for a coordinated bilateral response from all countries to prevent its spread. The WHO forecast that as many as four million people in the Americas may become infected by it. Prior to the outbreak in the Americas in 2015, other outbreaks had occurred primarily in sections of Africa, South-East Asia, and the Pacific Islands. The virus is spread to people primarily through the bite of the infected Aedes species of mosquitoes. The most common symptoms are similar to other viruses— Chikungunya and Dengue but the side effects are more severe. According to the WHO, the Zika virus causes microcephaly and other serious brain anomalies, a condition where babies are born with unusually small heads and underdeveloped brains. Zika also causes progressive muscle weakness that can lead to temporary paralysis. The common symptoms of the virus are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. The symptoms usually manifest for seven to 14 days. Guyana recorded its first case of the virus earlier this year.

Guyana to receive £53.2M in UK grant financing -potable water, airstrips rehab, waterfront development targeted Guyana is set to benefit from £53.2M in grant resources from the United Kingdom under its newly established United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (UKCIF). Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, along with Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson and Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, last week met with British High Commissioner Greg Quinn and representatives of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Department for International Fund (DFID) to discuss Guyana’s proposed infrastructural projects that are to be funded by UKCIF. UKCIF is an ambitious investment undertaken by the United Kingdom which will provide grant funding to improve or create new infrastructures such as roads, bridges and ports to help drive economic growth and development in nine countries across the Caribbean region. UK Prime Minister David Cameron announced the launch of the £300M Fund

Ministers Winston Jordan and David Patterson, UK High Commissioner Greg Quinn and other representatives of the UK delegation during the meeting. during his trip to Jamaica in 2015. According to the Ministry of Finance, yesterday, the Government of Guyana as a result, has identified and submitted project proposals for six major infrastructure development programmes.

The identified interventions will see improved road networks, bridges, stellings and waterfronts, rehabilitation of airstrips, reliable access to potable water and reduced energy costs as well as tackle the environmental and health risks associated

Man appears in court over church Break-in A vagrant who appeared in court charged with breaking into a church in which he was found hiding behind a piano “til’ day clean” was yesterday sentenced to four months in jail. Raul Ramsewak, of Rosignol Village Berbice West Coast Demerara, was charged with breaking into the Bethel Full Gospel Church at Norton Street, Werk-enRust, Georgetown, on Thursday. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Magistrate Fabayo Azore. Ramsewak was found in the compound at 1:30 am hiding behind a piano. According to the prosecution’s evidence,

Raul Ramsewak Ramsewak lives on the streets. No weapons were found on him, and he did not appear to have taken anything. Ramsewak was told of the allegation and he was subsequently arrested and

charged by police officers after investigations. “He was in court just a month ago” said the prosecutor, “for stealing mangoes.” When asked to explain why he was in the building, Ramsewak told the court that he was escorted into the building by someone who had a key. Ramsewak yawned, then explained that he was taken there to help somebody do something. Before his sentence the magistrate took into consideration that he had a previous matter in court and that he did not steal anything from the Church. She also noted that he was of stable mind and responded to all of her questions.

Relatives stated that doctors at the GPHC worked tirelessly on Omesh Seelall, called Rovin, 21, a labourer of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice. The man was also hooked up to a machine. However, despite their best efforts the man succumbed to his injuries around 13:30 hrs, yesterday. According to the man’s father, Seelall, called “Jackpaul”, the doctors had told him that there was little chance that his son would have made it since his brain has stopped functioning. The distraught man stated that after he visited his eldest son he realised that the machine was keeping him alive. He said, “His head was bash in and his eyes bulged out. There was massive internal damage and bleeding. A lot of clots were removed.” The man said that after his son was hit the devastating blow to his head and fell unconscious he was pounced upon by the others who stomped him even as he lay gravely ill on the ground bleeding from his mouth, nose, ear, eye and other parts of his body. His attackers, including two brothers, who all hail from the same village, then fled the

Omesh Seelall scene and went into hiding. The police acting on information held three men; one was released after being questioned. The other two were subsequently released on bail on Friday, but were rearrested after it was learnt that Seelall had died. The cops have since intensified the hunt for the main suspect who, is one of the brothers and allegedly delivered the blow. Reports are that a wedding was being held nearby and hundreds of persons were in the vicinity. Seelall was initially in a nearby shop

with some friends, who were imbibing, subsequently left the shop and went outside. Resident said that there were a number of fights in the vicinity during the night. Seelall was standing on the road in the vicinity of a dray cart when he was attacked around midnight. The main attacker suddenly ran across the road and grabbed a piece of wood (2x4 scantling) from the dray cart and struck Seelall to his head flooring him instantly and rendering him unconscious. The others then pounced upon him and stomped him repeatedly before escaping. Seelall received emergency treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital before he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Reports are that he suffered a fractured skull and his face was swollen. The victim was due to leave the county in a month’s time to join his mother and other relatives. The police have retrieved the wood used in the attack and are asking anyone with information on the wears about of the main culprit to contact the nearest police station.

Caribbean leaders sign Paris climate change agreement

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque (right) and Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland were among those at the Special Signing Ceremony for the Paris Climate Change Agreement at UN Headquarters yesterday. (Caribbean360) NEW YORK, United States – Caribbean leaders are among more than 170 world leaders who signed the Paris Agreement on climate change – the landmark accord that sets outs a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous global warming – yesterday morning at the United Nations headquarters. And Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on countries to move quickly to join the accord at the national level so that it can enter into force as early as possible. The Paris Agreement was adopted by all 196 Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris on 12 December 2015. All countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Paris Agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 countries, accounting for at least 55 per cent of

global greenhouse gas emissions, deposit their instruments of ratification or acceptance with the Secretary-General. “Let us never forget – climate action is not a burden; indeed, it offers many benefits,” the UN chief said as he opened the High Level Signature Ceremony for the Paris Agreement. “It can help us eradicate poverty, create green jobs, defeat hunger, prevent instability and improve the lives of girls and women.” Ban underscored that while it is good news that states are breaking records at the UN, records are also being broken outside. “Record global temperatures. Record ice loss. Record carbon levels in the atmosphere. We are in a race against time,” he pointed out, stressing that the window for keeping global temperate rise well below two degrees Celsius – let alone 1.5 degrees – is “rapidly closing.” “The era of consumption without consequences is over. We must intensify ef-

forts to decarbonize our economies. And we must support developing countries in making this transition. The poor and most vulnerable must not suffer further from a problem they did not create,” the Secretary-General added. In that vein, the UN chief highlighted that climate action is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. “Today is a day that I have worked toward since day one as Secretary-General of the United Nations and declared climate change to be my top priority. Today you are signing a new covenant with the future,” he said. But he also stressed that the covenant must amount to “more than promises”, and find expression in actions taken today on behalf of the current generation and all future generations. Yesterday’s special signing ceremony takes place on the first day that the Paris Agreement will open for signatures. It will remain open for one year.

As impeachment looms, Brazil’s Rousseff warns of ‘grave’ crisis UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff took her battle against impeachment to the United Nations yesterday, warning the international community her c ou n t r y i s s u f f e r i n g a “grave moment,” while her critics said she wants to use the trip to rally support against what she calls a “coup.” Rousseff could be removed from office within weeks by the Senate in an impeachment process that has paralyzed her government and thrown Brazil into its

deepest political crisis since its return to civilian rule in 1985. Rousseff suffered a crushing defeat last Sunday when the lower house of Congress voted to impeach her, almost guaranteeing the leftist leader will be forced from office in a Senate trial just months before the nation hosts the Olympics. The impeachment has p o l a r i z e d t h e c o u n t r y, with her supporters regarding the attempt to oust her for breaking budget laws as a “coup without weapons,” while

opp onents say the process followed the law and the constitution. The battle for the political narrative turned international yesterday, as Rousseff traveled to New York and her vice president gave interviews to two U.S. newspapers. Speaking at the United Nations during the signing of the Paris Agreement on climate change, Rousseff said Brazil had overcome military dictatorship three decades ago and built a “vibrant democracy” that will prevail.

FIFA sets up worker welfare body for Qatar World Cup (Reuters) The head of soccer’s world governing body FIFA urged Qatar to hasten improvements in safety and labour conditions for builders working on sites for the 2022 World Cup and declared: “we will not just sit and wait”. Gianni Infantino, on a twoday visit to Qatar, announced plans for a special working group to monitor the situation and acknowledged there were still “many challenges”. Amnesty International reported on abuses in Qatar’s preparations for the World Cup in a wide-ranging report three weeks ago based on the accounts of 132 workers at the

sites. It found construction workers from Nepal and India had been charged recruitment fees and housed in squalid conditions. Infantino said Qatar, the tournament’s first Arab host, supported the monitoring initiative. “I acknowledge very much the efforts which are being done. I want to see these efforts now being put in practice,” Infantino, elected as president of the scandalplagued federation in February, told reporters. “Of course we will not just sit and wait. “FIFA will step up its efforts in overseeing....in order to ensure the protection of the

workers’ rights in the construction of the FIFA World Cup sites is fulfilled” AMNESTY ACCUSATIONS The head of Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Hassan alThawadi, has said Doha is working to reduce abuses he described as occurring on construction sites all over the world. Infantino faces pressure from human rights groups to press for reform of labour laws in Qatar including its “kafala” sponsorship system, whereby employers effectively control a worker’s freedom to leave the country. Infantino said he had told

Opener Mark Williams and Akenie Adams added 53 for the fourth wicket before Adams played across to Persaud and was bowled for 13. The left-handed Williams cut Ronaldo Mohamed to the point boundary before hitting Persaud through long-on and mid-wicket, but after looking set for a half century he was trapped lbw to Seyhodan for 46 (7x4). Chinkoo and Jonathan Fernandes then boost their team further with aggressive batting in hazy conditions. Chinkoo took boundaries off Malcolm Hubbard and Travis Persaud, while Fernandes punched Darshan Persaud to the point boundary as Essequibo went to tea at 1555. The duo continued to bat aggressively after the interval - Fernandes struck Hubbard for two sixes and a four in one over before smashing Darshan Peraud for a towering six over mid-wicket. Chinkoo inched closer to his half century with boundaries off Darshan Persaud and Travis Persaud, but after reaching the milestone he was bowled by the lively Rutherford for 52. Seyhodan then sent back Fernandes for 37, but Travay Wolfe hit two fours in scoring 19 not out as Essequibo were bowled out for 197 in 61.1 overs. Rutherford had 4-27 and Seyhodan

Calm Harden fires Rockets past Warriors in Game Three Reuters (The Sports Xchange) - The frantic, final moments nearly undermined all the Houston Rockets built in scratching out a doubledigit lead, but James Harden took advantage of the disarray by doing what he does best. Harden nailed a stepback jumper with 2.7 seconds left, and the Houston Rockets claimed a 97-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game Three of a Western Conference first-round playoff series at Toyota Center on Thursday. The defending champion Warriors, playing a second consecutive game without All-Star guard Stephen Curry (right ankle sprain), still lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game Four set for Sunday at Toyota Center. The Rockets blew a 17point lead and trailed with 10.6 seconds left after Trevor

Ariza threw away an inbounds pass that facilitated a fastbreak layup by Warriors reserve guard Ian Clark. With Houston out of timeouts, Harden followed with a quick dribble, darted into the lane and spun free before nailing a 10-foot jumper. Warriors forward Draymond Green dribbled the ensuing inbounds pass off his foot and out of bounds for a turnover with one second left. “A lot of people just get nervous and don’t want to be in that situation,” said Harden, who scored a gamehigh 35 points. “For me, I strive in moments like that, so you just have to have confidence.” Harden added eight rebounds and nine assists. Donatas Motiejunas produced 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Dwight

(Troy Taormina-USA Today Sports). Howard also recorded a double-double (13 points and 13 rebounds) plus two

blocks. Reserve forward Marreese Speights led Golden State with 22 points in 18 minutes. Klay Thompson contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, and Shaun Livingston, who again filled in for Curry, added 16 points. KERR UNHAPPY What Speights started in the second quarter and carried through the third, Livingston picked up in the

fourth. Following a pair of Harrison Barnes free throws that sliced the Warriors’ deficit to six points, Livingston added three jumpers, the last with 8:59 left to cut it to 8180. Despite following that spurt with a three-minute drought, the Warriors hung tough. Trailing 88-80, they rallied with seven consecutive points and later took their first lead since 2-0 when Clark

nailed a floater with 1:25 left. “Well, I’m not really encouraged. This is how we were supposed to play,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “We should have actually played better. We made too many mistakes.” Golden State surrendered 20 points off 14 turnovers and missed 19-of-25 threepoint attempts. The Rockets sought early energy, and already leading 21-15, closed the first period with a 10-3 run. Harden was the linchpin, tallying seven consecutive points before Ariza turned a turnover into a transition dunk. Harden closed the quarter with a free throw, a pullup jumper plus a basket following his offensive rebound for a 13-point advantage entering the second. Houston extended to a 53-36 lead when Jason Terry and Harden sank three-pointers, but that was when Speights went on his scorching streak. The Warriors closed the half with a 9-0 run following a technical foul on Howard. Speights drilled his third trey of the half with 2.4 seconds left to cap his 14-point period and cut the deficit to 55-48 at the break.

De Villiers and Kohli set up Royal Challengers win ESPNcricinfo - Prior to this match, 14 of 15 games in IPL 2016 had been won by the team chasing. Royal Challengers Bangalore bucked the trend again by defending 185 against Rising Pune Supergiants and securing a 13-run victory. They had earlier defended 227 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Virat Kohli played an unVirat Kohli innings of 80 and struggled for timing, particularly in the middle overs. AB de Villiers, though, was his usual self, swatting and even reverse-swatting his way to 83 off 46. The pair produced their third 100-plus stand in four matches, adding 155 runs to take the side to 185, a total that Supergiants captain MS Dhoni described as “parplus”. Thisara Perera blitzed 34 off 13 to give Royal Challengers a late scare, after claiming three wickets with the ball, but Shane Watson dismissed the Sri Lanka allrounder and R Ashwin in the space of three balls to snuff out the chase. Supergiants lost Faf du

Plessis in the second over when he stepped out and chipped a catch to mid-off. A ball later, they suffered a bigger jolt. Kevin Pietersen set off for a quick single and seemed to have hurt his calf while turning back. Moments later, he limped off the field. In the next over, Steven Smith slipped near the middle of the pitch and was run out for 4. Ajinkya Rahane went on to make 60 off 46 balls, but his knock was offset by Dhoni’s patchy 41 off 38 balls. This meant that Supergiants limped through a large part of their chase before Perera gave it a leg-up. When Perera came out to bat at 109 for 3, the asking rate was close to 15 an over. He survived a close lbw shout off his first ball and then mowed South African chinaman bowler Tabraiz Shamsi over midwicket for a six. He hit full tilt when he bashed four successive boundaries off Harshal Patel in the 18th over. Perera’s blows reduced the equation from 50 off 18 balls to 25 off 12, but Watson and Kane

MIXED FORTUNES FOR UNBEATEN TEAMS IN GOLYN 10/10 Speedboat continues unbeaten run since October 2015 The Golyn 10/10 organized by the Guyana Softball League and sponsored by Golyn and sons, Trophy Stall and Miss Love Trading (West Coast) saw mixed fortunes for teams who were previously unbeaten. The results are as follows: West coast zone: at Leonora: SPEEDBOAT SC MAULED RYDEM STAR BY 10 WICKETS: Rydem Star won the toss and batted and were always in trouble as their batting seem clueless against the bowling of Speedboat. Wickets tumbled frequently as the batters tried to hit their way out of trouble and in the process gifted their wickets away. They lost their first wicket to the first ball of the day and never recovered as they tumbled to 30 all out in 8.3 overs. Anand Bharat 3-2 off one over and Sudesh Ram with 3-14 from two overs were the destroyers for Speedboat SC. Speed boat in reply took 1.4 overs to knock off the runs without losing a wicket to keep an undefeated streak stretching from October last

year. UNSTOPPABLE XI CAME FROM BEHIND TO SHOCK RUIMZEIGHT XI BY 12 RUNS: Unstoppable having lost all the sessions were on the verge of giving up fielding last when the Ruimzeight XI batters handed them a lifeline in the match which was the turning point after they were cruising at 55-1 in 3 overs chasing 119 to win. Unstoppable batted first and were in early trouble, but Eustace Joseph propped them up with a flamboyant 47 (6x6; 1x4) off 14 balls before he departed to a fine piece of bowling by Doodnauth Rambarose who ended with 1-16 off two overs. Unstoppable ended on 118-6 in 10 overs. Indar Dukhie opening the bowling took 218 off two overs to support the bowling. In their turn, everyone had Ruimzeight to win as they had the opposition baffled as the runs were coming easily until the introduction of Renaldo McAllister who started the slide by picking up 2 wickets in his first over and thus lifted

VIPERS CRUISED TO VICTORY OVER PREM XI BY 7 WICKETS: Prem XI won the toss and batted losing three wickets in the first over and never

recovered and at one stage were 11 runs for six wickets down and were in danger of being bowled out for the lowest total in the tournament, but Narine Bailey batting at number 7 had other ideas and started his account with a six over long on which gave him the confidence that he needed and he clobbered the bowling to all parts of the field. One such shot was a flick nonchalantly over square leg for six which brought the crowd to its feet as he continued to pummel the bowling ending on 55 not out (6x6;1x4) off 24 balls and pushing his team’s total to 858 in 10 overs to give his team a fighting chance. Arif Hussain with 3-5 off 2 overs and Amit Hussain with 2-1 off two overs were the bowlers who caused the problems. In their turn Vipers started brightly but lost a couple of wickets in the middle, but Arif Hussain with 33 (2x6; 2x4) off 13 balls and with support from skipper Aftab Hussain 24 (3x6) off 8 balls guided them 91-3 in 6.2 overs. ANSA McAl Lucozade Handicap Guyana’s ‘Green Machine’ aiming to Squash Tournament continues Rugby Americas North Championship

continue dominance over B/dos today Guyana’s national rugby team will open its quest to regain the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Championship when they face Barbados today, at the National Park Playfield, starting from 16:00 hrs. The national ruggers commonly referred to as the ‘Green Machine’ will be aiming to regain the title they lost to Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) last year, while the tournament is also being used as a qualifier for the 2019 World Cup so a lot is at stake for the Guyanese who has been the most dominant unit in regional rugby for a number of years. Captain Richard Staglon, one of the most experienced players in the squad speaking with the media on Wednesday said the team which has a mixture of experience and youth is extremely confident of beating the vis-

iting Barbadians and was rearing to get into action in front of what is anticipated to be a partisan home crowd. Staglon, who plays in T&T is the inspiration of the team and uses his vast experience gained from playing at the international level to motivate the younger players. The Guyanese defeated the Bajans 48-22 in a dominating performance last year right here in Guyana and while the Captain has expressed confidence of repeating that performance he also recognized that every tournament these days are becoming harder to win with teams possessing players who’re playing their trade in countries that play at a higher level. Guyana will be without the services of two very key players in Claudius Butts and Theodore Henry with the

former nursing an injury, while Henry is overseas on a Sports Course. However, apart from Staglon, players such as Avery Corbin, who produced an inspiring performance last year along with Peabo Hamilton, Ronald Mayers, former Captain Ryan Gonsalves, Dwayne Schroeder and the speedy Patrick King are in the line-up and they have the ability to pose a serious threat to any team in the Americas. Staglon when questioned about the opposition said that not much is known about them, but cautioned that the visitors usually gets players who’re playing overseas to return to increase their strength. With the ability of the Bajans unknown, Staglon and President of the Union Peter Green have urged all Guyana to come out and rally around the ‘Green Machine’ as it attempts to recapture the glory that it enjoyed not so long ago. Meanwhile, the Bajans arrived in the country yesterday and was scheduled to hold a practice session, at the National Park.

National Basketball Championships -Barbadian referees, Henry to be replayed tonight will officiate in Final After a damp squib a month ago, The National Basketball Final returns to Cliff Anderson Sports Hall tonight where a new champion will emerge from the contest that brings together two teams that are competing for their first national title in their second Finals appearance. L i n d e n ’s R e t r i e v e Raiders will play Georgetown’s Colts United in the National Basketball Final: The Road to Mecca III in a replay of the controversial March 19 final, which was left abandoned after Raiders walked off of the court with 9:18 left on the game clock in the fourth

quarter, down 51-54 against Colts. Pacesetters had managed to squeeze pass Ravens 7876 for the third placed prize. The top award will hopefully be decided between the top and second placed club in Guyana. Barbadian FIBA accredited referees along w i t h G u y a n a ’s F I B A , Sherwin Henry will officiate in the game. Raiders had walked off the court to protest what they called “poor and biased officiating” after a player was hit with two technical fouls. To eliminate the accusation, Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) went for foreign

backcourt and Raiders formidable frontcourt. Raiders’ strength is its height advantage with centre, Jason Alonzo, and forwards Marvin Hartman, Omally Sampson, Dwayne Roberts and Neil Marks, combining for an average height of about 6’4" in the paint. Colts’ backcourt will be challenged to get pass Raiders towers. Point guard, Dave Causway leads an efficient backcourt that includes Shelroy Thomas, Kurt English, and

sensational new addition from Kwakwani, swingman, 16-year-old, Stanton Rose. Colts will leave Onicko Fraser and national centre, Shane Webster to battle Raiders’ ‘bigs’ while the Raiders will hope point guard, Keon Cameron withstand the pressure of Colts’ guards. It was a balanced contest on March 19 and tonight should be no different. Before the Final, The National Anthem will be performed as halftime shows

are also scheduled. The cheerleaders will dominate a final hoorah to bring the curtains down on the Championships. The Mackeson Girls and Stereo Sonics Sound will add to the entertainment. Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine is the host. The winning team will pocket $500,000 while second place will go home with $250 000. Pacesetters won $150,000 and Ravens $100 000. An MVP will also be named following the Finals tonight.

GCB Hand-in-Hand U-19 Cricket

Berbice routed for 73 by U-17s at Wales By Sean Devers Defending three-day under-19 Inter-County cricket champions Berbice had won every game in the last two seasons before their opening game in this year’s Hand-in-Hand at Enterprise signaled what was to come for arguable the weakest U19 Berbice team at this level in the history of this tournament. Essequibo registered a historic first innings victory over the once mighty Berbice who were then beaten on first innings in the rain affected second round at Everest by Demerara. Berbice saved their worst batting performance for the last round of the tournament, falling for the tournament’s lowest total this year. After the entire first day was washed out at Wales on Thursday, the first session

was also washed out yesterday although the sun was out in all of its glory and the Western boundary was ‘pulled in’ due to a waterlogged area. The National U-17 Select won the toss and asked Berbice side to bat on a track with plenty of moisture and a sluggish outfield. Berbice were in immediate trouble with the demise of Ritish Umroa (4) to the impressive Joshua Jones with just eight runs on the board and never recovered, crumbling for 73 all out. Their embarrassing total was 20 runs less than what they were bundled out for against Essequibo, whose cricket has showed tremendous improvement this season, while Berbice’s had rapidly deteriorated. Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd continued to

demonstrate guile and confidence in his 18-over spell which cost just 11 runs and produced four wickets and was well supported by burly pacer Jones’ 3-33 in two spells of six overs each; bowling with good pace and

impeccable control. Adrian Sukwah (25) and his Captain Brandon Persaud (17) added 27 for the fifth wicket and were the only Berbicians to reach double

figures. By the close the U-17s were 21-0 from 4.1 overs when bad light stopped play at 16:58hrs. Baskar Yadram hammered three boundaries in one over from pacer Raymond Vanikhel to end the day on 15. With him was Sachin Singh on four to stamp their authority on the truncated day’s play. When medium pacer Alphius Bookie bowled Joel Seetaram for a duck, Berbice, who has produced 17 Test players, were 14-2 before Matthew Hardial was forced to retire hurt on two without addition to the score. Sasenarine Sukhu, who struggled to get the ball off the square, was removed by Nedd to end his misery after he had batted for 73 minutes for his nine to leave the score on 16-3.

When Nedd bowled Joshua Harrichand (4) Berbice had crawled to 23-4 from 23 overs and by Tea they had progressed to 38-4 from 29 overs and watching them bat was as exciting as watching paint dry. After Tea, Persaud, who played for Guyana at the U17 level in 2014, swept Nedd for four while Sukwah dumped Kevin Sinclair for six before clobbering Jones back over his head for his second six. The pair inspired hope of a recovery but once Sukwah was stupendously caught at mid off by Kelvin Anderson, diving full length forward off Jones and Persaud ran himself out, the U-17s in firm control. Today is the final day and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.

Barnwell to play for Chinkoo (52), Rutherford (4-27) Boyce/Jefford Select XI highlight second day’s play Looknauth Chinkoo gathers runs on the on-side.

A fine half century by Looknauth Chinkoo and a four-wicket haul by Sherfene Rutherford highlighted the second day’s play when action in the third and final round of the Guyana Cricket Board/Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 three-day tournament continued yesterday at Bourda. Chinkoo half-century knock lifted Essequibo, following the lost of three early wickets, after most of the morning session was lost

due to a section of the square being in a soggy state. Essequibo decided to bat and pacer Sherfene Rutherford had Nathan Persaud caught for four before Siddique Mohamed was lbw to Keshram Seyhodan for 11 leaving the score at 35-2. Skipper Keemo Paul lofted Darshan Persaud for a straight six to get off the mark, but the off-spinner disturbed his stumps in the said over for seven as (Continued on page 25)
