-WHYCLIFFE ‘DAVE’ CAMERON President, West Indies Cricket Board The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) continues to play a significant role in the development and growth of West Indies Cricket and we salute all their efforts. Over the last year, the GCB has made several steps to continue on its path to grow cricket in its country at all levels and we see the results as the teams are in the top three in all categories for men and women.

The outlets for all players have grown in numbers. This year’s ‘A’ Team tour to Sri Lanka was a notable addition to the calendar. Guyana’s presence was more than evident.

Guyana continues to play host for regional and international matches and provide suitable presence on the management of cricket in the region. We welcome them to the table and we know this strong partnership will only prove to be positive for the overall growth of cricket.

We are proud of the achievements of all our territorial boards and Guyana’s template for its development is worthy of emulation. We also note the contributions of the wider Guyanese community – The Government, Corporate partners, media and more importantly those who continue to be fans of the game of cricket.

The WICB has moved towards a more coordinated approach that involves the roles of the key success factors of human, financial and technical resources. We are certain that with even greater effort, cricket in the Caribbean and across the world will be better off.

We know of the key inputs that West Indies Cricket has to make to the global growth of cricket and we are keen to make that happen. GCB and its affiliates have a tremendous role to play.

We look forward to 2017 and beyond as the WICB is set to refocus its attention on a model that ensures not just accountability at all levels, but one which continues to include a wide cross-section of stakeholders and one that re-engages fans from all walks of life in and out of the region.

MESSAGE: THE MINISTER OF BUSINESS As the Minister of Business with responsibility for Tourism in Guyana, it is my pleasure to welcome readers to the fourth feature of THE GUYANA CRICKETER. Cricket is one of the most popular sports in Guyana, it transcends Hon. Dominic Gaskin boundaries and brings people together from all walks of life to enjoy the gentleman’s game. Over the years, we have produced many great cricketers in the persons of Rohan Kanhai, Roy Fredericks, Clive Lloyd, Carl Hooper, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, just to name a few.

The game is not only a way of life for sports enthusiasts but also a reason for people to travel across the globe to support their teams. Sports tourism has gained popularity in recent years, more and more people are using their well-earned vacations to see their favorite players in action, while enjoying our culture. Fans and tourists spend money and the economic impact is felt in hotels, restaurants, retail stores and also by the local transportation sector.

I take this opportunity to applaud the Guyana Cricket Board for capturing and highlighting the achievements of our cricketers, and I also wish to commend our cricketers for their disciplined and dedicated approach to the game. Guyana cricket remains a source a great pride for us all.

Cricket is one of the sporting disciplines, especially the T20 games of late, that have taken this world by storm.

The evolution of cricket in Guyana from the 1800s to present, has seen this game gain enormous popularity; it has blossomed from seeming insignificance to dynamic proportions.

The game of cricket is an important part of Guyana’s history and culture and the preservation of this rich legacy should not be treated lightly. Cricket is more than a game to Guyanese; it unifies people of diverse ethnic, religious or cultural backgrounds. It transcends age, gender or political persuasions.

I commend the Guyana Cricket Board for making a 70 year old dream become a reality when it officially launched the inaugural edition of the “Guyana Cricketer” in 2014. This very colourful magazine, now in its fourth edition, continues to document and showcase the achievements of our cricketers. This rich legacy must be kept alive, and the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Education- Department of Culture, Youth and Sport stands committed to supporting and promoting cricket throughout the country, and at all levels, so that Guyana can once again be a nursery for outstanding West Indian cricketers as it did in the 1970s.

I also wish to challenge the Guyana Cricket Board to produce more quality cricketers; the likes of Butcher, Solomon, Kanhai, Lloyd, Kallicharran, Gibbs, Croft, Hooper, the Harper brothers, Chanderpaul, Sarwan, and others and to keep the tradition alive.

I take this opportunity also to commend particularly Scotia Bank Kiddies Cricket and the Digicel Grassroots Cricket Programme for the tremendous support given to make cricket what it is today and to appeal to other stakeholders to come on board. SECRETARY’S REPORT 1. INTRODUCTION

The year 2016, in my view, continued our dominance of regional cricket. We managed to get all our age group and female competitions sponsored; a satisfying achievement for us despite the many off field distractions. However, good sense prevailed and I am happy that we have gradually engaged critical partners to assist in developing and enhancing our cricket. The Guyana Cricket Board continues to engage all stakeholders in an effort to bring back sponsors and unity in the cricketing fraternity. Our Executives and staff have focused on positive news and results which can only be judged by the on field results during 2016, the year in review.

In the Regional Under-17 Tournament, Guyana was pipped by Trinidad and Tobago, as the latter was declared winners of the tournament by a mere 0.3 bonus points.

Both teams suffered two washed out matches. Guyana played unbeaten in the tournament; they ended with 20.03 points.

After finishing in the cellar in the Regional 3-Day Tournament, Guyana Under-19 rebounded to claim the Regional 50-Overs title, and became the only team to win it in three consecutive years. Guyana dominated the Tournament and made light work of Windward Islands in the final. They bowled out Windwards for 143 then reached the target in the 43rd over, losing only five wickets in the process.

The T/20 format was also played in Guyana at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. Guyana ended in fourth position in this tournament which was also won by Trinidad and Tobago.

The 2016 GCB/Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Display activities at the National Stadium were conducted on 3rd June 2016. The participating primary schools were Hopetown, Maes, North Georgetown, Supply, Patentia, Saraswat, Philadelphia and Watooka. Each school was represented by eight boys and six girls with two teachers as their guides. The pupils had an opportunity to showcase their learning and talents during the lunch break activity of the West Indies vs South Africa match. Participants also acted as ball boys. Shiloh Adams from North Georgetown interviewed Shimron Hetymer in the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Minute Production which was viewed on the big screen in the ground and on television. Generally, the activities were deemed a success.

First Aid:

Two First Aid Courses were held in the month of November, 2016.

The first course was held on 6th November, 2016 and the second on 10th November, 2016. Both courses were conducted by the St. John’s Association Guyana, and participants are now recipients of a Basic First Aid Certificate from the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, which is a worldwide recognized organization. The First Aid certificate recipients are: Rayon Griffith, Julian Moore, Kavita Yadram, Ravishwar Latif, Winston Smith, Esuan Crandon, Clive Grimmond, Latchman Yadram, Anthony D’Andrade, Bevan Butts, Michael Hyles-Franco, Carl Ramsammy, Wahid Omar, Anil Persaud, Nandkishore Andrews, Yutesh Dhanpaul, Kenalyn Baker-Ava, Andrew Allen, Jitlall Jawharilall, Romario Shepherd, Kwame Crosse, Kevon Boodie, Andy Ramnarine, Kandasammy Surujnarine, Dhanpaul, Saeed Zaheer Mohamed, Zaheed Zakier, David Black, Kwasi Maltay, Dexter Solomon and Garvin Nedd. Colin Stuart is also a recipient of a First Aid Certificate, having first done so through the Red Cross Society.

Umpires Seminar:

The Guyana Cricket Board/Guyana Cricket Umpires Council (GCB/ GCUC) conducted a two (2) day workshop for umpires from across the country on the 28th and 30th Oct 2016. Colin Stuart and Grantley Culbard delivered on the Match Referee duties’ aspect of the program, while a number of umpires delivered on different aspects of Umpiring and umpiring laws. These included, Edward Nichols, Nigel Duguid, Shannon Crawford, and Nandkumar Shivsankar.

Personal (Player) Development Seminar – by Xercise:

During the first half of the year, the group Xercise held its first interactive session with cricketers, under an arrangement with the GCB. Although, most of the play-

ers were from Georgetown, it gave the CDC of GCB an opportunity to conceptualize the importance of Xercise contribution towards the personal development aspect of players. Further, members from Xercise were able to conduct another session with players during the latter half of the year.

4. MARKETING AND SPONSORSHIP

The year 2016 can be described as a distinct improvement over previous years in terms of the results achieved on the sponsorship front regarding competitions administered by the Board. There is still a lot more that needs to be done and the economic climate needs to improve along with tax incentives for potential sponsors should be offered by the Government. Most of the competitions of the GCB

are now sponsored with the exception of the National Secondary Schools Cricket League (partly sponsored).

Highlights of the year 2016 are outlined hereunder: The Guyana Cricketer Magazine 2017 - We have now produced three editions of this magazine which has been a huge success accumulating close to $10m in the last 3 years. Several key executives and staff continue to contribute their time, energy and resources to make this project successful.

This magazine has continued to be a useful source of income for the Board whereby those who prefer contributing smaller amounts to the Board can do so using this medium.

Jaguars local Franchise Leagues

- The Jaguars 3-Day League commenced in the latter part of September 2016 and has since concluded. This League was totally sponsored by the GCB and can be considered to be a very innovative move by the GCB to have more competitive first class cricket played across the country.

In this regard, we had over 112 players participating within the 8 franchises with the contracted and Academy players distributed between the 8 teams. The marketing proposal that encompassed all 3 formats was prepared and sent out to quite a few corporate entities with a view to have them purchasing these 8 teams. This initiative did not generate the kind of re-

sponse that we had anticipated and we need to redouble our efforts or adopt a different approach to have these League teams purchased so that, with ownership of the teams, we can witness a more professional approach by the teams in all formats of the game. Sponsors of the franchises will serve on the management committees of the franchises and would participate in the selection process.

The Ministry of Education has also agreed to be a partner in the supply of balls for this League. Minister Nicolette Henry has delivered on this promise by handing over a cheque valued at 1.5 Million Dollars for the 2015/16 edition.

Private Sector League

An idea has been floated to design a competition/league for private sector companies which would get that sector energized in the work of the GCB and help to develop a closer working relationship with the Board and these entities. Such a league would also aid these entities in having healthier and better quality employees. It was indicated that such a league should be self-sufficient.

Our marketing team worked very closely with the officials of the WICB in ensuring that the matches of the Tri Series held in Guyana were most successful. Several Executives of the GCB participated in this exercise. The team also ensured the success of the tour magazine which was launched in Guyana by contributing articles and acquiring sponsors.

5. NATIONAL SPORTS AWARDS

The Guyana Cricket Board won two prestigious awards at the National Sports Commission Awards Ceremony 2015 which was held in May 2016. The Board copped the ‘Best Sports Association of the Year’ and Mr. Anand Sanasie (Hon. Secretary) won the ‘Sports Administrator of the Year’. These accolades prove that with determination, dedication, commitment, tireless work, and resilience, success can be achieved.

6. ANNUAL PRESENTA TION CEREMONY

Our Annual Awards Ceremony was held on the 29th December, 2016 at the Umana Yana where a number of cricketers and those who contributed significantly towards cricket were honoured. The feature address was given by Mr. Conde Riley, Director of the West

Indies Cricket Board and VicePresident of Barbados Cricket Association.

7. STAFF

I wish to record my thanks to all those who assisted the Board during the year and also to the dedicated staff at the Guyana Cricket Board’s Secretariat, my fellow Executives, Clubs, County and Boards/Association Officials.

8. CONCLUSION

Cricket is becoming more and more challenging, for both players and administrators. The level of commitment from all stakeholders in the region has risen in a positive way. Cricket is more of a business than sport in the modern era. Players are demanded globally rather than nationally and they divert to where they are paid the most. It is no secret that they are paid handsomely across the cricketing world

for Leagues. As administrators, we are in constant battle to keep our players by planning new and different strategies all the time.

At the GCB, we have been building strongly on our recent undertakings. We have been running an Academy for the younger players identified as future stars. This Academy serves as a feeder to the Jaguars franchise. Currently there are 13 players on contract who are paid a monthly salary. I am very pleased with the results of this initiative as it has lifted the level of training of our senior team. It also lends itself to the high standards of our senior competitions. One such competition is the Jaguars 3-Day League which was a huge success this year. The Franchise and Academy players were distributed among the eight franchise teams

to help the other players to drive intense competition. The 50-Over and T20 formats which would be played in 2017 are expected to be far more competitive and exhilarating.

Our Secondary Schools Cricket League, in its second year, is another huge initiative. It has been another success yet again, capturing emerging cricketers from the Kiddies and Grassroot programmes. The second leg of the NSSCL will continue in the first quarter of 2017 and will see a national school champion and a district champion emerge every year. The National School champion team would be rewarded with a fully sponsored trip to the Sir Gary Sobers Schools Championship held annually by the Barbados Tourism Authority. The pri-

mary objective of this League is to get those cricketers coming out of schools to gravitate to clubs in their areas or to further training in the 16 clusters set up countrywide.

Despite the same old criticisms we have managed to forge ahead through robust, well thought out, revolutionary decisions that continues to produce positive results I would also like to say a special thanks to all our sponsors.

We have some exciting times ahead and must remain strong and work as a team to achieve better results in 2017 and onwards.

The Master of Ceremonies was the proficient Honorary Secretary of the GCB and Director of the WICB, Mr. Anand Sanasie, who set the tone for the President of the GCB, Mr. Drubahadur, to give his presentation of a detailed report of the GCB activities for 2016. His report included the various competitions the GCB organized, the tournaments the GCB competed in, as well as those that were host-

ed by the GCB. Mr. Drubahadur also took the privilege of highlighting the GCB’s performance for 2016, a year that is considered another successful one both on and off the field.

She noted that the many outstanding cricketers (males and females) being produced for regional and international cricket is testimony to the commendable work of the GCB. She applauded all the awardees in the various roles they play in developing cricket, and further acknowledged the Cricket Clubs and Associations for the part they play

in our success story. She congratulated all the cricketers for their hard work and superb achievements in the various competitions, urging them to continue making Guyana and themselves proud.

She also acknowledged those who participated in the winning World Cup squads.

Minister Henry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide whatever assistance is required to develop cricket and challenged the GCB to continue seeking out talents and nurture them.

der-19 achieved an amazing milestone, becoming the three-times champions in as many consecutive tournaments in the 50-Overs format, while the Guyana Jaguars completed a double in the 4-Day. The National Under-17s held their own by playing undefeated throughout the tournament, but, unfortunately, had to settle for second, mainly due to rain which affected their opportunity to play in an earlier match; eventually falling 0.3 points below Trinidad and Tobago, who lifted the regional trophy. These teams have restored the pride of Guyana’s cricket and based on the players’ level of discipline and commitment, coupled with the GCB and CGI programs, they appear set to dominate regional cricket for some time in the future.

Clearly, the year 2016 was another successful one for Guyana, as all at the GCB will know that “it is a great thing to win and an even greater thing to keep winning and maintaining your dominance.” The GCB officials and staff are now proud people, who relish a challenge, who are positively driven by daunting challenges, and who feast and strive on success. The year under review has exposed a new crew of young talents not only in Guyana but the Caribbean, taking the competition to a higher, more interesting and professional level, where youths playing with maturity and authority, where youths of regional and international recognition are on display - youths who stimulate spectator interest and who create an exciting impact on everyone.

The GCB continues to focus heavily on the preparation of national teams which always include fitness, discipline and commitment of our cricketers. The success of the Board lies in the effective planning and execution of strategies and initiatives, which includes quality assurance criteria for players and team performances. With such a committed, disciplined and professional approach, I believe 2017 would be another successful and enthralling year.

NSC AWARDS 2015 oozing from the GCB executives after every hit, and thereby creating a shield against the baseless attacks from disgruntled cricket distractors. Positive cricket news was the answer and the on-field performances proved that the administrators were focused.

This lionhearted group withstood the test of false accusations over and over again. However, the result was undying energy and persistence

After a long time these awards seem to have taken on a new look of transparency and the awards were distributed on merit. All of our sporting disciplines were well represented and the ceremony was well attended.

Over the past eight years or so, cricket has emerged from obscurity to enlightenment; a feat worth celebrating. One way success can be accentuated is by receiving accolades, particularly when these accolades are the highest in the land. It must be acknowledged that the National Sports Commission (NSC) Annual Awards is the highest in Guyana and Cricket was a winner at its 2016 staging of the

said awards ceremony, with the GCB being nominated in almost every category and winning two major awards. This is quite a remarkable achievement, especially in light of the GCB overcoming the efforts of their distractors who kept the sport out of the picture in previous years.

Mr. Anand Sanasie, the hardworking and dedicated Secretary of the GCB, won the prestigious “Sports Administrator of the Year 2015”.

The Honorary Secretary richly deserved his due recognition. Being chosen as the best Sports Official is undoubtedly a fitting accolade as he serves tirelessly and fearlessly to ensure the continued development of Guyana’s Cricket. His administrative skills are second to none, as he led the GCB into a new dimension of cricket evolution, locally and regionally. It should be noted that Mr. Sanasie also functions as the Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Jaguars and does so on a pro-bono basis.

The GCB copped the ‘Sports Association/Federation of the Year 2015’, an esteemed accolade for any organization. The Guyana Cricket Board has been very successful for the past three years, almost identical in terms of winning tournaments in 2014 and 2015; back to back winners for the Under-15 and Under-19, winners for the 2014/15 and 2015/16 4-Day season and they were Runner-up for the 2015 Super50. In 2016, Guyana was a semifinalist in the Super50, made it a triple crown in the Under-19, came second in the Under-15 and Under-17 and is sitting at second after the first leg of the 2016/17 4-Day season; they are still the favorites to claim the third consecutive title after the completion of the Tournament.

Even though this award highlights our achievements for the year 2015, it is no secret to the Caribbean people that Guyana has dominated regional cricket over the recent years at both the youth and senior levels. The GCB continues to deliver on our mandate: producing winning teams, creating exciting innovations and remarkable opportunities amongst other initiatives. Undoubtedly, our positive approach has led to our successes which continue to fuel our zest towards developing quality cricket and cricketers whilst making us the envy of our detractors.

The staff and officials of the GCB are deeply humbled and satisfied at being finally recognized and appreciated for the unprecedented successes that our teams have achieved over the past few years.

Despite the oppression, the GCB remained resolute towards achieving success and these national prestigious awards are evidence that with a vision backed by commitment and resilience there is no limit. The GCB is here to work harder, planning new strategies and initiatives. Cricket is a part of Guyana’s history and we intend to preserve it and make it richer.

It was found, that a green surface will allow the ball to seam around a bit, since greenness was found to promote movement). Further, the pitch on the first day’s play should have consistent pace and bounce.” The second and third Day pitch “should have dried out, should have become bouncier and should have quickened up. As such, it is critical that on the second and third days that the pitch does not crack badly by becoming too dry too quickly. Further, it is expected that during this mentioned period, that the pitch would have lost its greenness and so should not seam around much.

The ball should come nicely onto the bat and the pitch should now be ideal for batting.” On the fourth Day, “the surface should start to powder and the cracks will start to open up, thereby slowing the pitch down, and making it less bouncy,

with some levels of inconsistency (in bounce) and with signs that the pitch is beginning to take spin. On the fifth Day, it is expected that fourth day conditions and patterns will be accentuated (heightened) as the pitch wears further.” For a oneday limited-overs game “the general requirement here is for a pitch which will favor the batsmen. The ideal would be to produce a pitch equivalent to that on the second or third day of a five-day game (described above) but of course without the wear. This suggests that water should be withheld for one to two days longer than for a fiveday game to allow it to dry out for a day or two longer.” For one and two-day club games “since such games are seldom limited overs games and do not have a contrived result, the pitch here would need to have more life than that for a one-day limited overs game. This could be achieved in a number of ways, such as by deliberately producing a green-top or a spinners’ wicket (hopefully not by having to resort to sprinkling bulli dust over the pitch to promote the desired effect).” Having considered some goal-oriented pitch influences, and the objectives and pathways towards achieving such aims, it must

be acknowledged that there are factors that determine pitch performance. Of these factors, four main elements is recommended for consideration and execution, namely the nature of the bulli, the way in which the pitch is prepared, the way the water content of the bulli is controlled and the type of turf used.

In examining the bulli, it is important to look at the bulli composition, since the nature of the bulli determines the maximum pace and bounce that can be achieved.

The South African and Australian pattern, is to use bulli with strong swell/shrink characteristics i.e. bulli which swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and which is able to provide a pacey bouncy pitch. This characteristic is brought about by a high content of what is known as 2:1 swelling clays. These clay soils have a high binding strength (which is closely correlated with bounce and pace – greater binding strength, greater pace and higher bounce). It must be noted that organic matter in the bulli will have a dampening effect of both pace and bounce. Alternatively, a high sand content in the bulli will help to provide grip to

the ball when it comes into contact with the pitch. This will slow the pace of the ball and allow for greater turn, with published reports suggesting that ideal bulli should comprise such fractions of: Clay of 50 - 60% (Note that English and New Zealand pitches, have much lower levels than this down to 30%, Coarse sand:< 10%, Calcium carbonate: < 5% (this is often found as whitish nodules in our heavy clay soils, so avoid such soils). No visible reaction should take place when hydrochloric acid (10% dilution) is added to dry soil Sodium: < 5% (sodium levels are, unfortunately, rather high in the coastal pitches but there is nothing much that can be done about it except to make sure the problem is not accentuated by using bulli with a high sodium content, or regularly watering during the heat of the day when evaporation rates are high).

Linear shrinkage: 0.08 to 0.15 (the higher the linear shrinkage ratio, the more the pitch will crack).

Organic matter: < 5% (organic matter in the soil reduces binding strength and so reduces pace and bounce). It must also be noted, that where the clay content of the bulli is too high, cracking becomes a major problem. Cracking

is not only dependent on the clay content but also to a large extent on the type of clay mineral dominant in the bulli. It seems also that cracks can become permanent in that, they may not close up even on watering if a thick stone drainage layer exists under the bulli. This complicates pitch preparation and it is probably impossible to consistently produce a good pitch with such bulli. Note also that clay percentages can be lower than mentioned herein, for club and school pitches which do not need to last for four to five days of continuous play; and that the bulli should contain no gypsum or any other salts, since this promotes crumbling.

Finely divided limestone in the bulli will also cause crumbling, as well as high salinity.

The longer the pitch has to last, the deeper the bulli must be and for Provincial pitches, it is suggested that the depth should not be less than about 150 mm. One way of reducing the amount of bulli used during construction is to increasingly dilute the bulli with sand with increasing depth down the profile, but the upper 100 mm or so should always comprise pure bulli.

In the pitch preparation, the target should be meeting the required condition of the turf, as commonly suggested a pitch well covered with grass and with some green grass on the surface when play starts, although not all would agree with the need for surface green Recommendations for the depth grass. sively at the surface but remain moist at depth (because there are no roots to pump out the water).

Of interest here, is the reason for the apparent gain in pace of the ball when it strikes a green-top and the very definite deviation which can be achieved, with the former resulting due to the ball losing very little pace when it comes into contact with the ‘lubricated’ surface produced by the green leaf material. Moreover, it tends to keep lower than on a pitch that isn’t greentop, with it reaching the batsman sooner than it would have, had it bounced higher. It must be noted here, however, that it is physically impossible for the ball to actually gain in pace on pitching. The ball seams more readily because of the difference in friction between the seam and the playing surface and the non-seam and the playing surface, which is higher on a greentop than on a pitch that isn’t greentop. As a result, it is assumed here

that the seam still bites into the pitch whereas the non-seam portion of the ball will slide through with little resistance from the succulent grassy surface. The ball will therefore seam in the direction of the seam.

As for the moisture content of bulli, while determining the ideal water content for maximum compaction, known as the optimum water content (Hillel, 1980), could be time consuming, once known for a specific bulli, it can be used to assist in achieving a range of compaction options. The pitch should preferably have an even moisture content down to at least 75 mm and deeper since the nature of the bulli throughout this depth will affect the pace of the pitch. This can be achieved only at the start of play and provided that there is a sufficiently well-developed root system that facilitates enough active grass leaves to dry out the subsurface layers. As such, during preparation it may be necessary to reduce moisture loss from the surface by covering the pitch with hessian or shade cloth (or by spreading grass cuttings over ar-

eas which are not well grassed).

Alternatively, the pitch can be syringed (wetted with a fine spray) at intervals during the day or in the evening before the covers go on to moisten the surface. Syringing in the evening is probably preferable as it allows time for the water to soak into the surface layers of the pitch. Please note that slow and deep drying is preferable to rapid and surface-only drying.

The moisture content at which the change takes place varies with the nature of the bulli. For four and five day games, the pitch at the start of play should normally be at a moisture content greater than that which will give maximum pace so that it initially speeds up with further drying. For a one-day limitedovers game, the pitch should be near that moisture content which will give maximum pace. The greater the compaction, the higher the bounce and the faster the pitch.

To maximise these two, compaction down to a depth of 100 mm should be at least 80% of the maximum potential of the bulli to compact (measured as the bulk density of the bulli i.e. the weight of bulli

per unit volume). Such compaction is best achieved by rolling with a roller of appropriate weight when the bulli is at an appropriate moisture content. The marrying of these two is difficult for any groundsman. It is possible to establish this relationship through research, though it will vary from bulli to bulli, but the problem may arise in applying this information in practice. It was clearly found that when a light roller is used, the optimum water content is higher than would be the case when using a heavier roller, although one would then not achieve the same density. However, clearly one has to start with uniform deep wetting of the pitch. Since the infiltration rate of bulli is extremely slow, it is preferable to apply water slowly and over a long period, and if possible at night since rapid evaporation during the day could lead to salt accumulation at the surface. Even where a pitch is badly cracked, the water which penetrates through the cracks still has to soak into the solid blocks of bulli between the cracks, and this takes time. Watering must be uniform or the resulting pitch will play inconsistently.

A frequent recommendation is to start with a light roller and to then increase the weight of the roller as rolling proceeds. The reason given for this is that it will create a surface seal. While research studies have not been conclusive, that this is advantageous, it is possible though, that this seal will slow the rate of drying at the surface and, provided there is sufficient grass to ensure that water continues to be extracted from sub-surface layers, it may cause a more even drying of the soil profile. Further, while investigations of coastal pitches have led to the conclusion that there may be no need for a light roller, the specific role it plays is yet to be determined. Quite clearly, a heavy roller is needed to compact at depth and it should therefore be used before the deeper layers dry out too much. It must be appreciated that it is the weight of each single roller in a multi-drum roller that is important, and not merely the combined weight of all the drums. Quite the opposite of Foo, Hemraj had a slow start to the League, managing just 74 runs from the first three games, before picking up the tempo in the latter half, piling up 492 runs in the remaining four matches.

That performance has given Hemraj a new lease of life, and he is now working assiduously to win back his spot on the national team, with the ultimate goal of representing the senior West Indies at some point. Contracted now under the CGI Academy, the middle-order

“We’ve been able to see a wider pool of players and in various areas- the batting department, fast bowling and spin bowling we’ve seen people coming through. Even in wicket-keeping the guys are putting up good competition there.

I think most of the keepers realise now that in order to make the Guyana team, they’ll need to do something with the bat. So it’s good to see the level of competition,” the former Guyana and West Indies fast bowler explained.

From viewing the games firsthand, Stuart also witnessed a concerted effort by batsmen to spend more time at the crease and graft for their runs.

This is no surprise, as the ploy to

ensure batsmen occupy the crease for long periods has been deliberate. According to the playing conditions, 100 overs have to be bowled on each day, an increase from the regular 90 that players are accustomed to. In essence, three days and a session of cricket have been crammed into three days.

“I think a number of the batsmen were accustomed to playing the 50 and 20 overs so they’re now realising how to go about building an innings over a longer period of time, and I think that’s a plus from this tournament. I think we’re going to see the benefits when the national team plays the next PCL [Professional Cricket League] regional tournament,” Stuart indicated.

PLAYERS’ REACTION

Like Stuart, the players have generally embraced the new franchisebased model, with the majority of them giving positive reviews about its inaugural staging.

Left-handed middle-order batsman, Gajanand Singh, who appeared for champions Lower Corentyne, believes the Jaguars Franchise League “is a great initiative.”

“It gives the board an ideal base to see a greater number of players get an opportunity to showcase their talent and skills. I now prepare and look forward to play in the Jaguars Franchise League for it is the springboard to get back into the Guyana team,” he posited.

West Indies opener Rajendra Chandrika, who played for East Coast Demerara, echoed similar sentiments.

“It’s a good League, bringing out more players [and] also giving them a chance to make the national team and develop their game. It also gives them a chance to get involved in the CGI franchise team that has contracted players and development players,” the righthander remarked.

THE WAY FORWARD

Like everything else, there is always room for improvement, and from all indications the GCB will be working to ensure the League can, one, sustain itself, and two, consistently produce top quality cricketers.

International cricket commentator and journalist, Sean Devers, dubbed the League “a great concept”, as it not only produced a new cadre of players, but also ensured they were paid to stay committed to the game.

West Indies Under-19 selectee, Akshaya Persaud, who captained the West Demerara franchise, lauded the GCB for bringing such an idea to fruition. The all-rounder believes the League provides an ideal platform for younger players to hone their skills.

In 2016, Yadram began his superstar journey after helping Georgetown-Mahaicony Combined to beat Berbice Combined in the GCB/Banks DIH Ltd/ Digicel National Secondary School Cricket League semi-final game with a solid 74.

He then followed up his fifty with a match-winning 106 which was the foundation of his team’s title win in the final against the Essequibo side. The runs continued to flow throughout 2016. One memorable knock was his 177 in the GCB youth 3-Day tournament which helped the Under-17 side secure a draw from an equally talented Berbice team.

Against Essequibo in the Jaguars Franchise League Senior 3-Day tournament played in October, Yadram, representing his East Coast district, kept his reputation soaring after hammering back-toback hundreds; a first innings 118 and 121 in the second. His twin tons were also special as he became the first and only player to hit consecutive hundreds in the same match, ending fifth on the list of leading run-scorers with 547 runs.

He also captained the Guyana U-17 team who brought second in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-17 competition, gaining support from Coach Garvin Nedd who believed that the young man’s dream of playing for the West Indies was nearing.

against Windwards further helped strengthen Yadram’s case as he wrapped up the tournament on 202 runs at an average of 40 and a top score of 57 not out.

His achievements would not go unnoticed as he swept the GCB cricket awards for 2016 by copping four major awards which included; the Roy Fredericks Trophy for Junior Cricketer-of-the-Year, Most Valuable Player in the Regional Under-19; Most Runs in the Regional Under-19; and Most Wickets in the Regional Under-17.

Following his remarkable strides, Yadram was then drafted into the Guyana Jaguars Academy before being one of two Guyanese selected for the West Indies U19 team, involved in the Regional Super 50 tournament. That stint is targeted at building the next West Indies U19 team who will defend their World Cup title slated for 2018 in New Zealand.

Most children at the age of 14 are still pretty undecided as to what career they want to pursue, let alone realize their dreams. For Sachin Singh, his young career hasn’t even begun to kickstart, but talent can’t be denied and Singh has been riding a magic carpet on his way to regional and international super stardom, as he has played for the Guyana Under-15 twice, the Under-17 and West Indies Under-16 team.

A former Charlestown Secondary School student, currently attending Chase Academy, Singh began his career at 12 years of age, as a member of the legendary Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), where

His taste of leadership came when he was appointed skipper of the Guyana U15 team in 2015 and went on to win the Regional title for the fourth time for Guyana. The left-hander pummeled scores in the competition of 48, 43, 45 along with a match winning 45 in the final against Windwards at Providence to help his country maintain their dominance at the U-15 level.

In closing, it is expected that Yadram, Persaud and Singh will indeed utilize these enormous strides during 2017 onwards as they make up the nucleus of talent which Guyana will need for the future success in keeping with its rich history.

His form continued, so too did his rise to the top when he gained further acknowledgement from the selectors who believed that the young man’s form and maturity had merited selection for the national U17 squad. Singh’s promotion to the U17 level was somewhat of a success as he showed good technical application which allowed him to churn out a few decent scores including 78 against Windwards as Guyana finished second overall in the tournament.

International selection would come knocking on his door soon after, during the summer of 2016, in the form of West Indies U16 team which had been invited to participate in a six match, 50 over series in the United Kingdom, giving him an opportunity which allowed the opener to enhance his skill-set with the bat.
