CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

W

e face unprecedented global challenges the likes of which we have not seen in living memory. Whilst times are challenging, it gives me immense pride to see how in the face of adversity, our donors, sponsors and regular patrons are looking to the future. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, nearly all the lots in this catalogue can be rolled over to the following year should the current circumstances inhibit this year, so you can bid with confidence. You will have noticed that we have teamed up with the GWCT Grampian and Highland regional group auctions, providing our largest ever Auction - with an incredible 161 lots, from up and down the country.

This year is the 32nd year that the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust has held the Scottish Auction. It is however, the first year without the dinner. Whilst we will sorely miss the delightful surroundings of Prestonfield, and company of our friends – thanks to the ‘wizardry of modern technology’ the show must go on! There are many admirable organisations that seek to promote and protect the country pursuits and way of life about which we all feel so passionate. The work of GWCT is often overlooked, which may explain the continued very disappointing membership numbers. We are all facing in the same direction, namely to protect and promote the welfare of rural activities. The threats are all too real.

species. It is an expensive and painstaking process which is why your support tonight is so important. There is no guarantee of success. The husbandry of grouse moors remains a contentious issue which could fall foul of legislative manoeuvres, which in turn might seriously impact on the support of a huge range of species; species which benefit from the highly professional management of uplands. There are successes; the recovery of Black Grouse populations are a case in point, but other ground nesting birds such as the Grey Partridge remain under real threat and are the subject of intensive - if expensive - research by the GWCT. We live in an increasingly urbanised world occupied by a population who may well have never seen a farm animal, and at best might only have experienced ‘the countryside’ at a nature reserve or local park. GWCT Scotland’s Policy team are working hard to help the voice of the countryside be heard in an increasingly challenging social and political climate, influencing political decisions with hard evidence at every opportunity. I will sorely miss raising a glass (or three) with my friends at our Dinner, but I really look forward to seeing you all in person next year and making up for lost time. The GWCT needs your support now more than ever. So please enjoy the wonderful offerings in this catalogue. Pour yourself a large glass of something and get bidding!

Thank you for choosing to support the GWCT, whose excellent scientific and advisory work develops a scientific backbone of evidence supporting all of these organisations. Our wildlife is under real threat with alarming declines in the likes of curlew and water vole populations. The GWCT is working assiduously - along with the farming community - to create more positive environments for our beleaguered fellow

THE DIRECTOR’S CUT

W

e are living in very interesting times; coronavirus is on the rampage as I tap out this note, and our thoughts must be with those who are suffering, and those who are caring for them. The result for GWCT Scotland’s programme of events for 2020 has been challenging to say the least, and this joint Scottish Auction, Highland Region and Grampian Region on-line auction is the result. We must make it count. I have now been with GWCT for a year, and it has been a rollercoaster. I am fortunate to have a small but highly dedicated team, many of whom have been with GWCT Scotland for the majority of their working lives. They are knowledgeable and effective, and for a small organisation they wield practical and timely influence when and where it matters, whether as advisors, policy specialists, event organisers or scientists. Your support over the years has helped GWCT Scotland build and retain these experienced individuals. With that in mind, Dr Nick Hesford has recently joined as an Assistant Advisor, replacing Merlin Becker who has moved back to Ireland. Nick comes with a wealth of experience as a GWCT researcher, and we are fortunate to have captured him. But the real stars of the GWCT Scotland show are the Regional Chairmen and their committees. All volunteers, they and many more who support our work and raise much needed funds, do a fantastic job. Alongside them are the incredibly generous donors who donate auction lots, often year after year. Finally, our generous and loyal sponsors are indispensable and provide the funds to make it all happen. Thank you all. Two big issues over the last 12 months have been the publication of the Langholm Report and the Werritty Review. The latter in particular, could have far reaching implications for grouse moors, as it offers the Scottish Government ways to regulate grouse shooting. Its genesis has been the illegal persecution of raptors (birds of prey) on or near grouse moors. The review makes some sensible recommendations, but also some potentially challenging ones, and it may lead to the licensing of grouse moors. There is still a lot to play for, and GWCT have been at the heart of influencing

decision making. In particular, we are alongside Scottish Natural Heritage as it will be they who will be required to implement any practical recommendations from the Werritty Review. We are all far more aware of our environment, and Climate Change is undeniable. It is wonderful that the populations of these small islands are also much more interested in their local environments and the flora and fauna they share it with. There is of course another side, as some have latched onto the lazy and ill-informed rhetoric about country sports. Happy to ignore the net biodiversity gain and wonderful landscapes managed for shooting, whether upland or lowland, instead they seek the end of these and other country sports. And too many politicians are eerily silent on the issue. So, never has it been more important for GWCT Scotland to continue to find the answers through thorough peer-reviewed science, and to make the point in the corridors of power and influence the development of practical solutions to changing circumstances. If you, like me, want the next generation to enjoy country pursuits, and you recognise the very real contribution that this makes to our upland and lowland landscapes, and the net biodiversity gain that comes along with this, please continue to generously support GWCT Scotland, and we will continue to produce the honest science, influence and advice to make this happen. Please get on-line and start bidding. We need your support more this year, than we have ever needed it. Thank you.

n these unprecedented circumstances we are all facing, regrettably but understandably, the GWCT’s Highland Region annual Dinner and Sporting Auction like many other events up and down the country was cancelled this year. However I am delighted to offer some fantastic sporting lots to add to this year’s GWCT Scottish Auction (see pages 93-95). There is plenty of variety offered in the lots and I hope you will bid generously to help the Trust continue the vital scientific research to promote game and wildlife management in Scotland. All shooting, stalking and fishing lots should be taken in the 2020/21 season where possible, however, should we find ourselves unable to carry out these activities due to coronavirus, all may be rolled over to the 2021/22 season by agreement with the individual estates. I would like thank all the individuals and estates who have generously donated these amazing lots, and also Saffery Champness and R K Harrison who have sponsored this year’s Highland Region auction. elcome to the Grampian Silent Auction, but not in the format we were expecting even a few weeks ago.

There is no doubt these are challenging and worrying times, we can but hope and pray that the measures being taken will be effective and we get control of the situation more quickly than expected in order to minimise the human cost. Life will return to some kind of normality and previous priorities will also return so it is important that we make an effort, despite the situation, to maintain support, albeit at a reduced level. Therefore please support and make a bid in our silent auction, which you will find on pages 96-98. We have a great mix of lots, we have not included anything that would have taken place in the next few months however there is still plenty to offer. I would like to thank all of our lot donors for their generosity along with RK Harrison for the sponsorship of our auction. Without their support we would not be able to run our auction or raise the ever increasingly needed funds for GWCT Scotland. To make a bid, enter the amount and click on the ‘Place Bid’ button. • In order to place a bid for the first time, click on the register button. Complete the registration form and click on ‘Register’. • You can now place a bid on any lots you wish. Enter the amount you would like to bid in the box and click on ‘Place Bid’ or ‘Anonymous Bid’. • Once you have placed your bid, you can keep track of your winning bids via the ‘My Account’ tab on the left-hand side. You will receive text and email notifications should you be outbid on any items on which you have placed bids.

CASH DONATIONS We would like to thank all those who supported this year’s Auction by giving us a cash donations.

HOW TO PAY Lots can be paid for direct to GWCT by cheque, BACS or credit card, or online through Givergy (at a small cost to the buyer). We will email you an invoice. Cheques should be made out to “GWCT Scottish Auction”. Lots can be collected from the auction manager, Angela Walker, by arrangement once full payment has been made (tel: 07594 929783).

GIFT AID In cases where auction lots have been provided by individuals it may be beneficial from a tax perspective for these auction lots to be sold on behalf of the providers of the lots, and although they will be given 21 days in which to ask for the proceeds of sale to be sent to them it is believed that they will not do so and by not doing so that they will gift the proceeds to GWCT under GiftAid, thus adding 25% to the hammer proceeds. For this reason some of the lots are in fact being sold for the providers of the lots. In the remainder of cases, where the successful bid exceeds the known reasonable market value of the Lot, the purchaser, by signing a Gift Aid Declaration (you must be a UK taxpayer and have tax paid or payable equivalent to the relief being claimed), will be able to enhance the value of their donation. GiftAid allows the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, being a Charity, to claim an additional 25% on the difference between the market value and the winning bid. The Committee urge you to help them maximise funds generated by their auction for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust in this way. This is at no additional cost to yourself, and if you are a higher rate taxpayer you may be able to claim further tax relief via your self-assessment tax return of a further 25% of the difference. At the time of payment you will be advised which case applies and where appropriate asked to sign a Gift Aid Declaration form. 13

Usually on parade is the local sea-eagle, Victor, and you might easily see whales, seals, otters, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks as well. Try fishing from the ferry; or go on an adventure and bbq at sea with friendly and well behaved ferry company director, Chris Main. Take home a now famous ferry jumper, cap, mug and a pair of matching ferry wellies. There are several places to stay locally, from the Glenelg Inn, to several B&Bs and self catering options including The Green House (Lot 78) - why not bid for both? www.skyeferry.co.uk

Commissioned by William Crichton Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries, Dumfries House was designed John, Robert and James Adam and built between 1754 and 1759, the first major commission for Robert Adam. Recognised as one of the Adam brothers' masterpieces it later became the home of the Marquises of Bute. This charming and characterful dipper, carved from walnut, is by Ralph Williams. Having worked in the Department of Ornithology at the Natural History Museum, Ralph became self-employed in forestry and woodcarving, working exclusively in wood which he collects and seasons himself. This close understanding of his medium is evident in the unusual and surprising use of grain, colouration and other natural features unique to each piece of wood. His carvings have been commissioned by the RSPB, the BBC, the Hawk and Owl Trust and the organizers of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award. Williams is based in Cornwall, but his work has been exhibited all over the world, and presented to HRH Princess Anne and purchased by the late Queen Mother. The session will be at a venue to suit you (within an hour of Upper Largo, or further with expenses payable, by arrangement). The lot includes an hour’s sitting, one 10”x8” mounted print and an online gallery of 30-40 images from which to view and purchase further photographs, with advice on framing and wall display. www.carolinetrotter.co.uk

Screen print No.5 of an elephant from a limited edition of 5 by Chloe Gardner. This is a hand made print in a Farrow & Ball paint colour. The original elephant picture used as the basis for the screen print was created in Chloe’s trademark style using nothing but feathers stuck down in layers. In this case the original elephant was made mainly with guinea fowl feathers with some darker feathers below. Chloe’s inspiration for her feather pictures comes from her beautiful surroundings – living on a Scottish beach surrounded by light airy woods in all their beauty, sounds and smells and full of feathery friends! The original elephant was a commission but using the original Chloe has produced these lovely small edition screen prints as well as lots of beautiful home wares. www.chloegardner.com ART & JEWELLERY

Château de Francs is on the uppermost hills of the Gironde; the vineyard’s chalkyclay soil is very similar to that of SaintEmilion. Grown on vines with average age of 25 years this wine is 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon – the traditional St Emilion/ Pomerol blend. Aged for 12 months inbarrel, the result offers vibrant aromas of blackberry and damson, intermixed with intense brooding spice notes and hints of espresso, dark chocolate and cedar. A full-bodied and unctuously textured wine that displays excellent purity, finely grained tannins and notable length. Drink now to 2028.
