Freshly lined with cedar, the sauna smells lovely. Please don’t wear your street shoes on the new untreated wood floor. Continued on Page 6

Using the sauna for the first time?

Do not use the sauna if you are ill or after drinking alco Whathol. to bring: a swim suit, robe, or similar clothing, a large bottle of water, a towel or two, clean sandals or shower shoes.

Plan to rinse off before entering. Locker rooms and the deck shower are right at hand. Enter and close the door quickly to avoid releasing the heat. Inside you will find a dimly-lit, wood-lined room with wooden benches placed at various levels. The tem perature will likely be between 160 and 180 degrees. Saunas are quiet spaces. Enter quietly and plan to keep conversation low and to a minimum. 2022 GVREC.ORG

SEPTEMBER

GVR’s sauna is an electric, dry sauna. No one should at tempt to create steam in the room.

Routine sauna users also report higher quality sleep, re duced joint stiffness and muscle soreness, and improved mood.

Proponents claim a range of health benefits including reduced allergy-related sinus congestion, improved skin conditions, boosted immunity, improved circulation, and more. A 2017 study cited in Science News indicates that routine use of a sauna (4-7 times per week) significantly reduces the risk of developing elevated blood pressure.

A NEW SAUNA AT DESERT HILLS

Since 1976, studies have shown that sauna sessions improve sleep quality. A Finnish study in 2015 document ed an 18% reduction in death rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke among men who used a sauna four or more times each week.

GVR's lone sauna is located next to the Desert Hills pool deck shower. Dark, dry, and hot, this mysterious space can be a little intimidating for the uninitiated. Last month, the sauna was replaced with a brand new one, so there is no better time to give it a try.

Why sauna?

Spread a towel on an open bench and have a seat. Sitting on a towel or robe protects the benches from becoming Whensweat-stained.selecting a seat, remember heat rises. If you want a little more heat, select the higher bench. If you’re too hot on the higher bench, try the lower option. If there are few others in the sauna, feel free to stretch out, but be ready to sit up and make room as needed.

Real-time pool, fitness, and pickleball usage is now posted on the website. Find the link in the jump-to section of the home page at gvrec.org, or scan this QR code: D OES G VR HAVE SALT WATER POOLS?

Some items that have been discussed (but not decided on) to improve the policy include:

CORRECTION of information in the August issue: Not yet! Or not anymore. Or, not anymore and not yet. GVR used to use chlorine generator systems that relied on saltwater to create the chlorine required for a sanitary pool. Those systems were swapped out over time and all pools are currently chlorinated with sodium hypochlo rite solution. East Center will host GVR’s only pool (and spa) chlo rinated via a saltwater-chlorine generating process.

GVR staff often find themselves on the phone with members who are reporting dead animals that haven’t been removed from the street in front of their house, or asking for permis sion to install a wall around their front yard. Unlike planned commu nities such as Saddlebrooke or Quail Creek, your recreation organization has nothing to do with your Home owner’s Association. In fact, GVR serves members from 126 Homeown ers Associations and a couple of unaf filiated neighborhoods. If your con cern is about a recreation center or amenity, contact us! If it’s about your home or neighborhood, ask a nearby neighbor who you should talk to.

• Consider limiting the number of guest passes a member may pur chase each year Several other ideas were introduced and rejected after discussion. Some of these remaining ideas may be eliminated or others added as the conversation continues at ongoing BAC meetings.

Page 3GVRNOW! SEPTEMBER 2022

• Consider eliminating the requirement that guests stay in a GVR household with a member or in a local hotel as a guest of a mem ber, since this provision is unenforceable

Children 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Children 6 and younger must have an adult in the pool with them at all times.

• consider eliminating annual guest passes, offering daily and weekly passes instead

GVR AIN'T YOUR HOA

• Determine guest pass fees that discourage abuse but allow for legitimate guests to enjoy the facilities when they visit

• Clarify how far a person needs to live from GVR to qualify as a guest

A LETTER FROM THE GVR BOARD PRESIDENTDID YOU KNOW?

GVR guest passes are being abused. Members provide them to rent ers, Airbnb customers, live-in companions, and neighbors. Others bring several guests several times each week. It is a surprisingly tough, multi-faceted problem that adds wear and tear to facilities and displaces members who pay annual dues to enjoy activities. To most, it doesn’t feel fair. To resolve it will require quite a bit of thoughtful planning and open, gracious conversation.

REMINDER!

Watch for notice of an information session on this topic. Great solu tions result when people come together with a generous spirit to find GVR-Kathisolutions.BachelorBoardPresident

• Consider adopting a few practices from other recreation organiza tions:•institute a one-pass-per-adult-guest policy, eliminating the unlimited guests for unlimited visits provision, but continu ing to allow children at no fee

(no guest pass required for kids!)

At a recent meeting, the Board Affairs Committee (BAC) began talking about the problems GVR faces with the current guest pass policy. I’d like to include you all in some thoughts that were shared.

Flooring to be installed from 9/6-9/26. You’re going to sweat—use your second towel for this.

Santa Rita Springs Santa Cruz Room Flooring to be installed mid-September.

Construction of the new computer club space will begin the week of August 28 and should be complete by mid-Octo ber.

Completed construction drawings have been submitted for permitting which takes about eight weeks. The Board of Directors awarded a contract to build to Barker Construction on August 24.

Page 6GVRNOW! SEPTEMBER 2022

The pool will reopen this fall. There has been a delay in installing the shade structure footings due to the nature of the soils beneath the pool deck. Geotechnical survey ors and multiple engineers had to be consulted to design an approach that will ensure the shade structures remain intact through our monsoon winds. These plans are being finalized and submitted for permits now. Once permits are issued, the footings will be poured, followed by the pool deck. We are told this work will be complete no later than Thanksgiving, though staff remain ready for and hopeful of an earlier reopening date. Meanwhile, the locker rooms will get a facelift in the final week of September.

Santa Rita Springs Kino Room

If you become sleepy, dizzy, or light-headed, leave the room immediately. Never let yourself fall asleep in a sauna.

The American Journal of Public Health recommends that healthy people limit sauna sessions to fifteen minutes at a time. Five to ten minutes is a fine starting place for begin ners. Veteran users will often step out after ten or fifteen minutes, rinse off in the shower, drink some water, and return to the room. Do not do any personal grooming, stretching, or exercising in the sauna.

Demolition and new flooring are completed on the top floor and painting is nearly done. Accessible restrooms, the lower level, and the parking lot renovation are all in design phases.

A room that is currently part of the Computer Club space will become an Art Room. When it is finished, the Art Room at Desert Hills will be vacated and the Ceramics Club will expand into it.
