GVRNOW!

MEMBER SURVEY, 2022

In 2018, GVR engaged the National Research Center (NRC) to conduct a comprehensive survey of the membership. Through a joint commission by GVR and what is now the Green Valley Council, NRC had previously conducted a survey of Green Valley residents in 2010. The February 2018 survey was issued to all 21,593 GVR members. The May 2010 survey was issued to 3,000 randomly selected residents.

Results in each of those surveys were similar in several areas:

• 90% or more respondents in both surveys agreed that GVR provides good or excellent recreational and social opportunities

• 80% or more respondents rated the facilities as good or excellent

• 80% or more felt the variety of classes and programs were good or excellent

• Less than 60% felt the prices of classes and programs were good or excellent

• In 2010, 67% felt they were getting good value for their GVR dues. In 2018, 70% agreed.

• In 2010, 15% of respondents were working at least part time for pay. In 2018 that number dipped just a bit to 13%.

• Folks under age 70 decreased 3% between 2010 and 2018 while 70-74 year olds increased by 6% in that time.

• Year-round residents represented 66% of 2010 respondents and 65% of 2018 respondents.

Where the surveys revealed changes:

• In 2010, the top priority improvements were a special needs fitness room (not defined), a therapy pool (also not defined), an internet café and/or internet access in centers, ability to pay dues with credit cards, and ability to register for classes over the phone.

• In 2018, the improvements members wanted most were walkable trails and open space, more weekend and evening activities, a fitness studio with cardio equipment, and a shaded pavilion.

Most of those priorities have been resolved or are in-process and GVR is eager to hear what’s on the minds of members today.

On Monday, October 17, 2022, another comprehensive survey will be distributed. The National Research Center has merged with another national firm and is no longer an affordable option. For this survey, GVR has engaged Zelos, LLC, the firm that facilitated GVR’s current Strategic Plan and conducted the associated survey in 2021.

Las Campanas

In English, las campanas means “the bells.” If you look around the neighborhood where the Las Campanas center is, you will note the bells theme.

The n in las campanas is a plain old n, like those in bananas. When you use the ny sound (as in companion), it becomes las campañas which means “the campaigns.”

A Letter from the GVR Board President

As you may know, the GVR Foundation recently issued a friendly challenge to GVR Clubs to help raise money for MAP.

MAP is the Member Assistance Program. It helps GVR members in financial need pay their annual dues.

Members with income under 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines may be eligible for MAP if they meet other criteria. For example, MAP is not awarded if the applicant owns multiple GVR homes, if they have rented out their GVR home, or if they have bought their home in the last 12 months.

MAP awards have made such a difference in the lives of people who rely on GVR for social connection and health regimens. Since 1995, donations from people like you and me have helped pay 1,113 members’ dues.

If you belong to a GVR Club, please encourage the group to take up the challenge. If you don’t belong to a club, consider making a tax-deductible donation at GVRFoundation.org or by picking up a donation envelope at any GVR Customer Service Desk.

This year, the GVR Foundation Board of Directors has collected a matching fund and will double each dollar of the first $10,000 donated between November 1 and December 31, 2022. This is an impressive effort from the Foundation—one I wholeheartedly support. I hope we can all pitch in a bit to help them meet their goal of raising funds to pay dues for 100 members in need.

—Kathi Bachelor

President, GVR Board of Directors

If you are in need of assistance to pay annual GVR dues in 2023, MAP applications are available now at GVREC.org or any GVR Customer Service Desk. The application process is much simpler this year—just two pages!

Like the 2010 survey, this survey will be distributed via email or “snail” mail to 5,000 randomly selected members. It will also be available for all other members to take via an online link or by picking up a paper copy at any Customer Service Desk. Responses from the two groups (random selection vs. self-selection) will be segregated for comparison.

Timely respondents in the random-selection group will be entered to win one grand prize: a full dues waiver for 2023.

Five respondents in the general membership group will receive a $100 credit to their ActiveNet account, good for event and performance tickets and course registration fees.

The survey will only be open for a few weeks, so mark your calendars and watch for an invitation or announcement.

FACILITY PROJECT UPDATES

The Arts and Crafts relocation and Ceramics expansion projects are expected to be complete this month. Look for a new Arts and Crafts room at Santa Rita Springs (in the previous computer club space). Ceramics will expand into the vacated Arts and Crafts space at Desert Hills.

The Computer Club’s new home upstairs at Santa Rita Springs will be complete near the end of October. The vacated space downstairs will become a Glass Arts studio. Architectural drawings for the new studio are complete and under review by the Glass Arts club.

This month, the fitness center at Santa Rita Springs will expand into what has been a seasonal staff office.

Construction drawings for the Del Sol Clubhouse renovations have been submitted to Pima County for permits.

Change is Afoot

The cover story for the June, 2022 GVR Now! was titled simply, “Efficiencies.” In that article, CEO Scott Somers shared his priority to examine how GVR’s most valuable resources could be reallocated for maximum return on member investment. Since then, plans to repurpose various spaces have begun (see Facilities Project Updates). This month, the staff who work in centers will be similarly reorganized. Custodial teams will work evenings and focus fully on cleaning and light maintenance. All other center staff will focus on recreation services. In many cases, familiar faces won’t change, but many will start reporting in different colored shirts over the next several weeks.

Members can expect:

• Quicker response to unexpected needs: most staff will eventually be wearing yellow—the color of GVR’s problemsolving team

• Improved application of rules and friendly education about etiquette

• Improved accuracy of real-time facility-use data

It’s easy to share the GVR Now! with friends and neighbors who are still up north. The online version is posted on the homepage at GVREC.org. Past issues, such as the June 2022 Efficiencies issue, are also available at GVREC.org under the “News and Info” tab.

• The same services for classes, event ticket sales, and guest cards

In the following months, expect to hear more about efficiencies measures designed to ensure GVR continues to provide high value for your recreation dollar.

GVR CLUBS

Fun, Fitness & Community with GVR Square and Round Dance Club

GVR SQUARES is proud to announce our first, free, introductory square dance party scheduled for November 7, 6:30–9pm at Canoa Hills Center. Two left feet? Don’t have a partner? Never danced before? Not a problem! Modern square dancing is set to all kinds of music and is great exercise for the body and mind and an activity that leads to new friendships.

If you are attracted to square dancing after this introduction, our caller and instructor, Rick Gittelman, offers an introductory class to modern square dancing through the GVR Course Catalog. The classes are fun and freewheeling and the club has an active program of Square and Round dancing.

Square and Round Dancing in Green Valley was started in the mid 1960s by Irma Schaffnit. She also started the Aquabelles. In that time Square dance dress was very stylized with bolos for the men and fancy skirts for the women. Now, dress is casual and the older square dance costumes are rarely seen.

Welcome to our square dance party! Come as you are, no dress code! We promise a fun evening!

New GVR Clubs Catalog

In the last few weeks, the GVR Clubs Catalog arrived in Green Valley mailboxes as a special inset in the Home, Health, and Life newspaper. Copies are available in centers and online at GVREC.org. Thank you to all the club volunteers who submitted information. Thanks to Guy Atchley for taking so many marvelous photos, and thanks to the crew at KGVY for all their work to make this piece happen and get out there into the community. We will publish a new version each year, so clubs that didn’t get a photo in this year’s issue will have plenty of time to get just the right shot for the 2023 issue. These catalogs will be included in new member welcome packets, introducing new folks to all that GVR Clubs have to offer.

CLUBS!

This page is now available for brief (under 200 words) articles about your group or group events. We will print two per month with priority going to clubs that have not yet published, or clubs that last published a year or more ago. If demand exceeds availability, other criteria will be applied. All submissions will be edited for length and clarity. Each article can be accompanied by a single photo.
