OCTOBER 2026
GVREC.ORG
There’s a place for you at GVR There are so many ways to be a member at GVR. Some come for the for the pools, others for the fitness centers, courts, clubs, classes, events, or simply the chance to stay active and connected. However members choose to participate, each person adds something to the character of this community. With nearly 24,000 members, GVR is much more than a collection of facilities and programs. It’s a community shaped every day by the people who walk through its doors, and the possibilities for becoming part of that extend well beyond signing up for a class or attending an activity. For many members, the deeper rewards of GVR begin when they move from participating in what’s offered to helping create the experiences that bring neighbors together. Volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways members contribute their time, talents, and enthusiasm. GVR is strengthened by people who are willing to lend a hand, whether through Board or committee service, club leadership, or event support. Volunteers are, in many ways, the quiet center of GVR. As one longtime member observed, “There’s always something happening here, but what people don’t always see is the volunteer effort behind it.” Involvement doesn’t always mean taking on a formal volunteer role. Sometimes, it means playing BINGO on a Monday evening and knowing that your night of fun is helping another member. The GVR Foundation’s fall BINGO games, held on the first and third Mondays of the month, raise funds for
the Member Assistance Program, which provides financial assistance to qualifying GVR members. With early seating beginning at 3pm and games starting at 5pm, the evenings offer plenty of time to settle in and enjoy a little friendly competition. You can bring your own snacks, purchase refreshments, enter the raffles, and perhaps even leave with a jackpot, but the real win is knowing that the proceeds help strengthen the community beyond the BINGO hall. Being part of a community also means making time to celebrate and enjoy the people around us. Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 17, will bring members together at West Center for an afternoon of live music from The Bouncing Czechs, German food, and beer and wine from the Rotary Club of Green Valley, with proceeds from the beer garden benefiting a Rotary charity. There’ll be a lederhosen contest, table trivia, a beer stein-holding contest, and, naturally, a hearty “Prost!” Whether you arrive with friends or strike up a conversation with the people at your table, these are the kinds of experiences that turn a facility into a gathering place and familiar faces into friends. Other occasions invite members to celebrate what they can create together. On November 13 and 14, the GVR Lapidary Club will sponsor its annual Artisans’ Festival at West Center, showcasing an impressive array of handcrafted work created by GVR members. Pottery, ceramics, paintings, glass art, woodwork, and more will fill the festival, offering visitors a chance not only to admire the creativity within GVR, but also

Dear members,
Where is the Ceramics Club?
Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.
Accessible from either parking lot, the Ceramics Club can be found on the second story of Desert Hills, overlooking the pool. Bright signs guide your way to the one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items for sale. They are open daily, 8am–4pm, at 2980 S Camino Del Sol. Stop by and say hi!
Children’s Pool Hours West Center Weekdays: Noon–9pm Weekends & holidays: ALL day All other pools Daily: 11am–1pm AND 4–6pm No guest pass required for kids! Children seventeen and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Children six and younger must have an adult in the pool with them at all times.
Happy October! The change of seasons is in the air! It’s the perfect time to try new things and embark on new endeavors. As this issue of GVR Now is dedicated to the value of volunteerism, I would like to discuss the significant impact members have on GVR by being either a committee or Board member. As Sherry Anderson, writer and speaker, has stated:
An excellent example of how the volunteer Board is making a difference to the GVR organization is the Board’s continued dedication to creating the new five-year Strategic Plan. Based upon the GVR member survey results, the Board reaffirmed GVR’s mission and vision statement, evaluated GVR’s strengths and challenges, and forged new organization goals. The strategic plan is the roadmap for GVR, guiding the Board and staff to make decisions that support the organization’s overall objectives. Obviously, this is important work, and the Board is instrumental in developing the future of GVR. If you are interested in becoming a GVR Board director, please consider running for election in 2027. Applications will become available soon with the deadline for returned applications in late December 2026. Apart from being a Board director, GVR members can serve on one of our four committees: Board Affairs, Fiscal Affairs, Investments, and Audit. As part of a governing committee, GVR members become part of the policy-making process. The committee chairs send their recommendations to the Board for final approval. This is an excellent opportunity for GVR members to gain experience in the processes that shape the future success of GVR. Applications for Committee members are available year-round and can be found on the GVR website. As Lee Iacocca said: “The thing that lies at the foundation of positive change, the way I see it, is service to a fellow human being.” Please consider becoming more involved in the GVR community. We always need more good people to accomplish more good things. Sincerely, Candy English GVR Board President

Never Stop Learning
OCTOBER 2026
With summer winding down, it’s easy to think of all the ways to relax while finally catching up with life. The hustle and bustle of normal has returned and with it, returns routine. Perhaps a morning yoga class will ground the day and wake up the body to breathe new life into getting things moving. At GVR, we believe fostering the mind is just as important as the body. You enter a room of strangers, a little intimidated, and are soon sat down with your new Mah Jongg friend. You fumble a bit together, learn the ropes, and maybe even shine a little competitive light on each other. Soon you’re laughing until you cry and trying to decide which cooking class you’ll enroll in together. Connections are what it’s all about. Testing the waters, enriching your mind, finding your place in the community. Your new normal becomes your new routine. The continued learning keeping you sharp, happy, and connected.

Cover story, continued… to meet some of the people behind it. For the artists, it’s an opportunity to share what they’ve made. For everyone else, it’s a chance to discover the remarkable talents that exist among our neighbors. That may be one of the most remarkable things about GVR: there’s no single definition of what it means to be involved. One member may devote hours each month to volunteering, while another contributes by joining a club, attending an event, supporting a fundraiser, welcoming a new participant, or simply bringing a little enthusiasm along for the ride. Some members lead, some organize, some lend a hand, some create, and some cheer from the sidelines. Every contribution adds something to the larger picture.
Lunch is served until 2pm! Have you been waiting for lunch options? The wait ends now because the Clubhouse Café has come up with a new sandwich menu that will make your mouth water. Daily from 11am–2pm, the café is serving your favorite sandwiches (with chips and a pickle spear). Whether you’re looking for a light, refreshing midday meal or a warm, comfortable grilled cheese, we’ve got you covered! The café staff would like to thank everyone who stops by and says, “What’s on the menu today?” We never stop listening, learning, and growing. Visit the café inside the Del Sol Clubhouse at 3355 S. Camino del Sol, open daily from 7am–2pm.
And belonging doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. A class can become a routine. A routine can become a friendship. A friendship can lead to a club, a volunteer opportunity, a fundraiser, or a shared project. Before long, what began as something to do can become something to which you feel connected. The spirit of GVR lives in these connections, in the conversations that begin before a class, the familiar faces across a clubroom, the volunteers who arrive early and stay late, the artists who share what they’ve made, and the members who gather to laugh, celebrate, compete, or lend their support to a good cause. GVR belongs to all of us, and its character is continually shaped by the ways we participate. Maybe your next step is trying something new, joining a club, lending a hand, or saying hello to someone you haven’t met yet. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to feel a little more at home.
